0:00:33 > 0:00:37And for the people of Cairngorm, that brings new challenges.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43We've just discovered a gas leak.

0:00:43 > 0:00:45Woo!

0:00:57 > 0:00:58Because I didn't have it on my list.

0:00:58 > 0:01:02Adam sets a linguistic challenge on the hill...

0:01:02 > 0:01:05Richt ticht and in a good clart o' grease.

0:01:05 > 0:01:07..and summer ends with a splash.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13Farewell to summer on the mountain.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16Whoa! Windy up here.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29It's 6am on Cairngorm.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36Adam McInnes and Rory Simpson are starting their day.

0:01:37 > 0:01:42MUSIC: Summertime by Ella Fitzgerald

0:01:42 > 0:01:50# Summertime and the livin' is easy... #

0:01:53 > 0:01:56What way you wanting them, Rory? Down below you?

0:01:56 > 0:01:59# Fish are jumpin'... #

0:01:59 > 0:02:02They're making final repairs on the mountain railway,

0:02:02 > 0:02:05vital work before the first skiers arrive.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08So this is the kind of stuff that you're...

0:02:08 > 0:02:11You do the track inspection pre-winter,

0:02:11 > 0:02:13cos you don't want to be out here doing this

0:02:13 > 0:02:14in the snow, you know?

0:02:16 > 0:02:19There are 400 guide wheels on the track.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22Adam and Rory are replacing the worn-out ones.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25There was only the two needed done on this top section.

0:02:25 > 0:02:29So just nip doon with the buggy and get it out the way.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53On a bank of the River Spey, a group of local

0:02:53 > 0:02:56volunteers are preparing the final event of the summer.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58Right, Tom...

0:02:59 > 0:03:01..goes square to the bottom.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04Who's tall enough for this?

0:03:04 > 0:03:06Organising the build are Nick Etheridge...

0:03:06 > 0:03:08It's all going fine.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11..and his business partner, Mike Gale.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13That is amazing.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16I'm getting a little bit excited now.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19This is the Big Splasher under construction.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22The Big Splash has become Aviemore's way of ending summer on a high.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26Big Splash poster there.

0:03:26 > 0:03:30The original idea was we just wanted a good community event that

0:03:30 > 0:03:32brings all the...

0:03:32 > 0:03:34if you like, the different elements together of the skiers,

0:03:34 > 0:03:38the bikers... Cos we've got some great sportsmen and women up here.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40We just wanted to kind of showcase the talent that we have.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42So that was the original idea, so we went,

0:03:42 > 0:03:46"Right. Let's build a ramp and see what happens."

0:03:46 > 0:03:49But then it kind of just descended into lots of daft things

0:03:49 > 0:03:53going off the ramp and it just became good craic for the locals.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55Is that too long?

0:03:55 > 0:03:56That'll do.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59Just try and get this up. This is the registration tent.

0:03:59 > 0:04:01We're just fudging it.

0:04:01 > 0:04:04And for once, they don't need to worry about the weather.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06They're going to get wet anyway,

0:04:06 > 0:04:09so it doesn't matter if it rains or not.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24At the sailing school on Loch Insh, it's the start of another busy day.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30You'll get a form somewhere. Put your bags down.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33I think it'll be fun. Yeah?

0:04:36 > 0:04:39It's Jonny Freshwater's first year as the boss.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41Get up here in about two minutes and I want a straight line.

0:04:41 > 0:04:45It's just checking in and making sure kids know where they're going

0:04:45 > 0:04:47and "I want to be in this group," "I want to be in that group,"

0:04:47 > 0:04:50so just a wee bit of organisation.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53As the school groups get ready to go on the water,

0:04:53 > 0:04:56Jonny's having to deal with the arrival of a safety inspector.

0:04:59 > 0:05:01So are you using this for land drills and stuff, mostly,

0:05:01 > 0:05:03or are you actually using this?

0:05:03 > 0:05:05No, no, we'll use a pico wherever we can.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07- Are you all having fun?- Yup!

0:05:07 > 0:05:11Newly qualified instructor Aysha takes the first class of the day.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16The aim of today is just to learn a little bit on how to steer

0:05:16 > 0:05:21the boat as well as go home feeling happy they sailed.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25So refresh your first-aid kit on the fire boat,

0:05:25 > 0:05:28centre board retaining straps on the oppies and omega.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31Will we say complete by end of the week?

0:05:32 > 0:05:34Since taking on the business,

0:05:34 > 0:05:37Jonny has been trying to manage things his way.

0:05:37 > 0:05:39Good morning, Loch Insh Watersports.

0:05:41 > 0:05:45Jonny is really chilled out and such a nice person to work with.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48He's probably, like, one of the nicest bosses I've ever had.

0:05:48 > 0:05:52How was your weekend? Nice. All right, bro. See you in a bit.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56It's a change in style from the man he inherited the business from,

0:05:56 > 0:05:58his dad Clive.

0:05:59 > 0:06:03We put this up for Dad's funeral, actually, and, erm,

0:06:03 > 0:06:05trawled through a ton of photos.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08Always has been very much a family outfit, and even the folk

0:06:08 > 0:06:15coming on holiday through the year have enjoyed seeing this and

0:06:15 > 0:06:19remembering the legend that was my dad.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22Jonny and his two brothers grew up here,

0:06:22 > 0:06:25and helped their dad build Loch Insh into what it is today.

0:06:25 > 0:06:29He was always just intensely work-driven, you know?

0:06:29 > 0:06:32Every year we had a little bit of profit,

0:06:32 > 0:06:34he'd pump it into another small extension

0:06:34 > 0:06:37and it's kind of been added to bit by bit over the years

0:06:37 > 0:06:40and that's what we're dealing with right now.

0:06:40 > 0:06:42We're renovating the rooms. At the moment,

0:06:42 > 0:06:46we're just dealing with the ones that get the complaints.

0:06:46 > 0:06:48That's all our accommodation pretty much.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51Hall down to about there, and then all the chalets.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56There are 170 bedrooms.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58In a typical summer,

0:06:58 > 0:07:01up to 1,400 schoolchildren stay here for up to a week.

0:07:01 > 0:07:02How we doing, guys?

0:07:05 > 0:07:08- My two numpties never opened up two chalets yesterday.- I know.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10Because I didn't have it on my list.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12Now Jonny's calling the shots,

0:07:12 > 0:07:15he has to deal with the same headaches his dad did.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18- They weren't in there that day?- No.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20Now, they look at that every day.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23Who's arriving, who's going, who's staying. They didn't do it.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26They just ignored it. It's pretty hopeless.

0:07:26 > 0:07:29Housekeepers yesterday didn't open up the

0:07:29 > 0:07:31chalets for two of the guests, so the guests turn up,

0:07:31 > 0:07:37chalet's locked, and then they have to contact people and it's just

0:07:37 > 0:07:39not ideal.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41How you doing, guys? Just have a seat over on the tables there.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44Dealing with staff issues, overseeing renovations,

0:07:44 > 0:07:46managing the sailing school,

0:07:46 > 0:07:50Jonny has come to realise that he can't do it all himself.

0:07:51 > 0:07:55So he's recruited someone who knows Loch Insh well.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58This is the last time Wendy was here.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01Wendy Sylvester last worked with Jonny in 2006.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04We'll head up, show you where you're working.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07He's persuaded her to return as the new manager.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09It's like a trip down memory lane.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11I know.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14Wendy wastes no time in getting to work.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16Health and safety, COSH, fire regs.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18That's the health and safety policy.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22I worked with Jonny before when I was here years ago and we work well.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25We're different, but we work well.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28We didn't have anyone that was really steering the business

0:08:28 > 0:08:29forward, so it's just nice to

0:08:29 > 0:08:32actually finally put somebody in that role.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35I'm like the new Clive.

0:08:35 > 0:08:37She'll need to work fast.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39Some of the schools who are their regular

0:08:39 > 0:08:41clients are talking of moving to their competitors

0:08:41 > 0:08:43because they feel Loch Insh is too action-based

0:08:43 > 0:08:46and lacks an academic element.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49Jonny and Wendy need to find out what the problem is.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53We want to make sure that we're giving them exactly what they want.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56So they've decided to invite a group of teachers to spend

0:08:56 > 0:08:58the weekend at Loch Insh.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04It'd be good for me to hear their views, you know,

0:09:04 > 0:09:05what we can improve.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07Jonny intends to show them

0:09:07 > 0:09:10what makes this sailing school different from any other.

0:09:10 > 0:09:11A bit of brainstorming,

0:09:11 > 0:09:16a chance to talk about the Loch Insh experience from their point of view.

0:09:16 > 0:09:18Read it properly. Don't skim read.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20I'm just a really fast reader, OK?

0:09:24 > 0:09:28MUSIC: Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes

0:09:30 > 0:09:32On the mountain,

0:09:32 > 0:09:37time is running out to get everything ready for the coming ski season.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39Early this year, Adam McInnes

0:09:39 > 0:09:43and the team started the biggest project of the summer...

0:09:43 > 0:09:47# A seven-nation army couldn't hold me back... #

0:09:47 > 0:09:50..the replacement of the 52-year-old shieling ski tow.

0:09:50 > 0:09:52A bit of history done there.

0:09:52 > 0:09:56A fixture on the hill since the '60s, its removal was the first priority.

0:10:00 > 0:10:03Now there's a huge landscaping job under way.

0:10:05 > 0:10:06But there's a problem.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12Cables. Lots of them.

0:10:12 > 0:10:14The last 50 years there's been developments done up here.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17The record-keeping wasn't as good as it should be,

0:10:17 > 0:10:21and people just throw things in now and again we're not aware of.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23Only one cable needs to be kept.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25The main electrical supply for the tow.

0:10:26 > 0:10:29Ruairi Law is drafted in to help trace it.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34The cable that we're uncovering is shallow in some points

0:10:34 > 0:10:35and then really deep in others.

0:10:35 > 0:10:37He'll scrape the top layer off,

0:10:37 > 0:10:40making sure he doesn't nick the cable, because we need to reuse it.

0:10:40 > 0:10:42Then I'll dig the rest out.

0:10:44 > 0:10:48700 tonnes of earth and rock are excavated before

0:10:48 > 0:10:51they carefully rebuild the 300m ski run.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55Land manager Jim Cornfoot is pleased with the results.

0:10:55 > 0:11:00It's much smoother. It's got a little dish in it,

0:11:00 > 0:11:03which will naturally fill in as well with snow.

0:11:03 > 0:11:07By opening this up we can now get our big machines in.

0:11:07 > 0:11:11Bring down a couple extra long slings for the bottom!

0:11:11 > 0:11:13The replacement tow is now on-site.

0:11:15 > 0:11:17For Adam, Christmas has come early.

0:11:19 > 0:11:21It's more hassle getting this wrapping off

0:11:21 > 0:11:23than putting the lift in!

0:11:23 > 0:11:26As part of a huge investment for the mountain,

0:11:26 > 0:11:29this new tow has cost over £50,000.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31A lot of money is spent this year and next year,

0:11:31 > 0:11:34the ski lift upgrade is a two-year project.

0:11:34 > 0:11:39Operations manager Colin Matthew is looking forward to big changes.

0:11:39 > 0:11:40It's all pretty exciting.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44The next few years, there's going to be a lot happening here.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50I'm good here. I'm good.

0:11:50 > 0:11:51On you go, Col!

0:11:51 > 0:11:5618 feet long, the top tower is the first to be moved into place.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59Just try and centralise it as best you can.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02Precise positioning is required.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05And a very big spanner.

0:12:05 > 0:12:0746mm metric shifter.

0:12:09 > 0:12:10Make her richt ticht!

0:12:10 > 0:12:13Richt ticht, so she doesn't blow over.

0:12:13 > 0:12:17Once it's been put together, the tool can be raised and lowered to

0:12:17 > 0:12:20allow ski-pisting machinery greater access to the slopes.

0:12:21 > 0:12:24It's a huge improvement on the old shieling tow.

0:12:28 > 0:12:29That's it.

0:12:29 > 0:12:31Beautiful.

0:12:31 > 0:12:33Yeah, chuffed.

0:12:33 > 0:12:39# I know I'd go from rags to riches

0:12:39 > 0:12:42# If you would only say you cared... #

0:12:42 > 0:12:46The entire team pulled together to get the job completed on time.

0:12:46 > 0:12:52# Though my pocket may be empty

0:12:52 > 0:12:54# I'd be a millionaire... #

0:12:54 > 0:12:57Even Rannoch, P-Man's dog, is pitching in.

0:12:59 > 0:13:00We all take our pride in it.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04We're all passionate about the mountain, you know?

0:13:04 > 0:13:07Cos pay's not great. So they don't get, you know...

0:13:07 > 0:13:11It's not like they're up here for the money. You know?

0:13:11 > 0:13:14- He's got my gloves, P-Man, look. - Unlucky.

0:13:21 > 0:13:22More money would help, by the way.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35By the River Spey, Mike's big ramp is taking shape.

0:13:52 > 0:13:56Just a big community help-out - everybody's helped.

0:13:56 > 0:13:58The snow matting from the hill. That's good.

0:13:58 > 0:14:03The wood is from a local sawmill.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06Scaffolding, local scaffolding company.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09Everything here is from the community.

0:14:09 > 0:14:11They all provide free.

0:14:13 > 0:14:18It's run as a charity event, with profits going to a good cause.

0:14:18 > 0:14:20This year, they've chosen quite an appropriate one.

0:14:20 > 0:14:24It's going to the Aviemore Medical Practice,

0:14:24 > 0:14:27cos we've probably sent a lot of people there in the past.

0:14:34 > 0:14:39Deep in a mountain lair, far from prying eyes, plans are being hatched.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43No back, no top.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46Kind of like that.

0:14:46 > 0:14:48Eight wheels.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51Cairngorm's very own engineering wizard, P-Man,

0:14:51 > 0:14:54is working up a Big Splash plan.

0:14:54 > 0:14:58Three-point linkage, kind of, basic steering.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00- We need a bit of strength for four people.- Aye.

0:15:00 > 0:15:02Wheel at the front, wheel at the back.

0:15:03 > 0:15:07Hopefully, it'll be not too much of a death trap.

0:15:07 > 0:15:10Some people just turn around and build daft things.

0:15:10 > 0:15:12And that's where I come in.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30He's even press-ganged guest services boss Sarah Munro.

0:15:30 > 0:15:32Scared.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34She's coming on board as a passenger.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39You get all sorts of stupidity.

0:15:39 > 0:15:42Pirate ships, bedsteads, toilets with skis on.

0:15:42 > 0:15:46Wheelchair with fire extinguishers.

0:15:46 > 0:15:48Guy that covered himself in tar and feathers,

0:15:48 > 0:15:51and we shot him with paintball guns as he went off the ramp.

0:15:51 > 0:15:52So it's quite safe then?

0:15:52 > 0:15:54Most injuries happen on the ramp.

0:15:54 > 0:15:56They just don't even make it off the ramp.

0:15:56 > 0:15:58They just come down and hit about there.

0:16:11 > 0:16:13P-Man has built his very own funicular.

0:16:15 > 0:16:18Grab a paintbrush and just start painting something.

0:16:18 > 0:16:19Not long to go,

0:16:19 > 0:16:22so he calls on the painting skills of his colleague Brian.

0:16:24 > 0:16:27Is that a window? Is that a window? What bit's the window?

0:16:27 > 0:16:30The white bits are the window. Don't paint that!

0:16:30 > 0:16:32- I thought this was in between?- No!

0:16:32 > 0:16:35- The nugget's just painted the- BEEP- window.

0:16:35 > 0:16:37One big square, another big square, another big square.

0:16:42 > 0:16:43Argh!

0:16:43 > 0:16:45BRIAN BEEPS LIKE A REVERSING LORRY

0:16:45 > 0:16:47# Going to build a daydream... #

0:16:47 > 0:16:49Look at the steering, look! Ha-hey!

0:16:51 > 0:16:54# Going to push that daydream

0:16:54 > 0:16:58# Up the mountain slope

0:16:58 > 0:17:01# Going to build a daydream

0:17:01 > 0:17:05# Gonna see it through

0:17:05 > 0:17:08# Gonna build a mountain and a daydream

0:17:08 > 0:17:11# Gonna make 'em both come true... #

0:17:11 > 0:17:12Perfect.

0:17:12 > 0:17:14Don't worry about it. It'll be fine.

0:17:14 > 0:17:18# Gonna build a mountain

0:17:18 > 0:17:20# From a little hill

0:17:22 > 0:17:25# Gonna build a mountain

0:17:25 > 0:17:28# Least I hope I will

0:17:29 > 0:17:30# Gonna build a mountain... #

0:17:32 > 0:17:34It's a big day for Jonny Freshwater.

0:17:34 > 0:17:36There are good raspberries around, yeah.

0:17:36 > 0:17:40The schoolteachers are arriving to tell him how it is.

0:17:40 > 0:17:42We're going to have a little brainstorming session

0:17:42 > 0:17:46on how we improve the facilities for their schools

0:17:46 > 0:17:49and what they're looking for.

0:17:49 > 0:17:53He and new manager Wendy know it's the teachers who decide

0:17:53 > 0:17:55whether they send their kids here or not.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58Some schools have asked for less time on the water

0:17:58 > 0:18:00and more classroom-based teaching.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03He wants to convince them otherwise.

0:18:03 > 0:18:05Different schools want different things,

0:18:05 > 0:18:08but another school are considering going elsewhere this year

0:18:08 > 0:18:11cos they want the more educational thing, you know?

0:18:11 > 0:18:15So I suppose that's what helped spur it along.

0:18:15 > 0:18:17This issue matters to Jonny.

0:18:17 > 0:18:21Since his dad set up the sailing school more than 40 years ago,

0:18:21 > 0:18:23its guiding principle has been to give schoolchildren

0:18:23 > 0:18:26from a wide range of backgrounds the chance

0:18:26 > 0:18:28to get on the water and enjoy themselves.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33Jonny and Wendy have a plan to get their message across.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38So this is a random little video that I filmed

0:18:38 > 0:18:41of my old man doing a staff meeting,

0:18:41 > 0:18:43and it kind of sums up my upbringing

0:18:43 > 0:18:46and where Dad was coming from as far as teaching goes,

0:18:46 > 0:18:49and why we're slightly difference to other places, you know?

0:18:49 > 0:18:52So I'm talking to you because I'm disappointed

0:18:52 > 0:18:54after what we said yesterday.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56We've got all this equipment here.

0:18:56 > 0:19:00These kids will never, ever see

0:19:00 > 0:19:03a canoe or a sailing boat again.

0:19:03 > 0:19:06All they want to do is get at it.

0:19:06 > 0:19:08Now, you may be bored stiff with it.

0:19:08 > 0:19:10Let's try and make it a bit more exciting for them.

0:19:10 > 0:19:14They've got a piece of equipment each. They want to have a go.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17They don't want to listen to too much chat.

0:19:17 > 0:19:20The main thing is that they've got their own bit of gear.

0:19:21 > 0:19:24Now I hope I made the point to you.

0:19:24 > 0:19:26There's talk and chalk.

0:19:28 > 0:19:29OK?

0:19:34 > 0:19:36He's said it before.

0:19:38 > 0:19:40Kind of gets the point across

0:19:40 > 0:19:44of what we try and do with the kids of just getting them on the water.

0:19:44 > 0:19:46There's tons of equipment here,

0:19:46 > 0:19:48and getting them out there for the maximum amount of time,

0:19:48 > 0:19:50we want to get them on the water.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53This isn't an academic thing, and for so many of our kids,

0:19:53 > 0:19:56this experience has to not be an academic thing.

0:19:56 > 0:20:00We've seen so many children who... Friendships have grown here

0:20:00 > 0:20:03that when they get back to the school permeate everything,

0:20:03 > 0:20:07and it really changes the structure of the classes. So it's just...

0:20:07 > 0:20:08It's really good.

0:20:08 > 0:20:12Jonny's style may differ, but Clive's legacy remains.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15He's always here, you know, this is his baby.

0:20:15 > 0:20:20He is here in spirit, and he always will be, I think. It's Loch Insh.

0:20:20 > 0:20:23But always nice to hear him going on again, for sure.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28Think he'd be really proud of Jonny.

0:20:28 > 0:20:32I think we've all grown up over the last 10, 15 years,

0:20:32 > 0:20:37and it's fitting that the Freshwaters still have Loch Insh.

0:20:37 > 0:20:41It's what they've worked for all their lives.

0:20:44 > 0:20:48With Wendy at the helm and the teachers committed to Loch Insh,

0:20:48 > 0:20:51it allows Jonny to get back to what he loves most.

0:20:53 > 0:20:55Being on the water.

0:21:08 > 0:21:13This madness is the end-of-summer community party.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16We're just getting the bar and the barbecue set up.

0:21:16 > 0:21:18The ramp is ready.

0:21:19 > 0:21:23Mike and Nick make some crucial last-minute preparations.

0:21:23 > 0:21:27We'll go get into our kayaking gear and we'll get the boat in.

0:21:27 > 0:21:31Be good for the diver to go in and check there's nothing they're going to hit at the bottom.

0:21:31 > 0:21:35Good morning, and welcome.

0:21:35 > 0:21:38Here comes a whole team of boys. Can't wait to register.

0:21:48 > 0:21:52P-Man has made it down the mountain with his funicular intact.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01- Perfect.- The press-ganged crew has also turned up.

0:22:03 > 0:22:07P-Man is definitely going at the front, because it steers.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10Mikey's going at the back to push it off,

0:22:10 > 0:22:13and I'll just be the wimp in the middle, going, "Argh!"

0:22:13 > 0:22:15It's going to be awesome.

0:22:19 > 0:22:21Bar's open, food's open,

0:22:21 > 0:22:24we're going to have a ball this afternoon.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27Adam's turned up to see P-Man's moment of glory.

0:22:31 > 0:22:35Jonny Freshwater arrives in true Loch Insh style.
