0:01:01 > 0:01:02Brett, if you put the little

0:01:02 > 0:01:04fellow on your shoulder there, and burped him, would it help?

0:01:04 > 0:01:08Put him on your shoulder and burp him. Sometimes that's a bit easier.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11Don't forget to tell her that you love her so much.

0:01:11 > 0:01:13I love you. I love you too.

0:01:13 > 0:01:15Keep it up!

0:01:15 > 0:01:18Can the worldly wisdom of new-found friends...

0:01:18 > 0:01:21You can't change what happened to you, but remember this,

0:01:23 > 0:01:26..each with their own unique perspective on life,

0:01:26 > 0:01:29offer us help at a time when we need it most?

0:01:29 > 0:01:32Go, go, go, go. Come on girl!

0:01:33 > 0:01:35To have people to even, like,

0:01:35 > 0:01:38care and push me that much was, like, amazing.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41Come on, Lauren. Let me hear you say, "Thank you, Dad."

0:01:43 > 0:01:46I'm glad you're watching. I'm glad you're here.

0:01:52 > 0:01:54The sages offering guidance from the

0:01:54 > 0:01:56far corners of the Earth this week...

0:01:58 > 0:02:01..are, in Ireland, Sister Una.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04I bet you none of you know that the Holy Father wore red shoes.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07I couldn't believe that the Pope had red shoes.

0:02:08 > 0:02:12In New York, streetwise retired cops Mark and Joe.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15I'm not dancing to Dancing Queen. Just so you know.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20In Norway, Lilian, a health and lifestyle guru

0:02:20 > 0:02:22and former Playboy model.

0:02:23 > 0:02:27I would never eat a hamburger if they paid me 1 million.

0:02:27 > 0:02:31And in South Africa, traditional healer Elisa and best friend Gwen.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34We want you to have faith. We want you to be positive, right?

0:02:35 > 0:02:37They'll be offering up their

0:02:37 > 0:02:40collective pearls of wisdom to help two people in need.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46Brett, who's worried he won't be able to cope with newborn twins

0:02:45 > 0:02:48and a wife recovering from major surgery.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51It's kind of worrying that with all the things that's gone on,

0:02:51 > 0:02:53it's now completely on us.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56Is there anything you want to ask me?

0:02:56 > 0:02:58Do you want to move in? Wouldn't I love it!

0:02:58 > 0:03:00LAUGHS

0:03:01 > 0:03:04But first, our sages begin by

0:03:04 > 0:03:08learning about the struggles of 35-year-old Dan.

0:03:08 > 0:03:12St James's, which is where we'll be on Saturday.

0:03:12 > 0:03:16In just a few days, he's set to marry the love of his life, Suzy,

0:03:16 > 0:03:19in a small village on the Norfolk coast.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23This place.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26It's so quiet and clean.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28That's like God's country right there.

0:03:28 > 0:03:32So I'm here, dripping with sweat, terrified.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Suzy will come up here.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37I'll probably start crying, if I'm honest.

0:03:38 > 0:03:41Bit emosh. And then, yeah...

0:03:41 > 0:03:43Then it all goes off.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46We're going to need to pick up the rings

0:03:46 > 0:03:49and you need to pick the suits up as well.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51But this will be no ordinary wedding.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54You definitely need to write me a list, because let's be honest,

0:03:54 > 0:03:56I will forget.

0:03:56 > 0:03:58Dan will need all the help he can get

0:03:58 > 0:04:00to simply make it through his big day.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06Nine months ago, he suffered a sudden double stroke,

0:04:06 > 0:04:09changing their lives forever.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12I sneezed on my way to work, lost my eyesight.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18Got told I'd dissected an artery in my neck and I'd had a stroke.

0:04:18 > 0:04:20What a shock.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23I can't describe how I felt when it happened, to be honest.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25It felt like a dream. It felt like,

0:04:25 > 0:04:28"How the hell can this be happening to us?"

0:04:28 > 0:04:31I was put on the ward for the rest of the week, and then

0:04:31 > 0:04:35Saturday morning unfortunately I had a second massive stroke.

0:04:35 > 0:04:37Lost my entire left side,

0:04:37 > 0:04:40lost the right side of my face, which slipped.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43My speech was affected. I went blind again.

0:04:45 > 0:04:50Yeah, we've had a bad few months ever since, really.

0:04:50 > 0:04:51Since leaving hospital,

0:04:51 > 0:04:56Dan's had Suzy by his side, caring for him night and day.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59He's regained his sight and speech, but other symptoms,

0:04:59 > 0:05:02such as chronic tiredness, still dominate his life.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05It's probably pretty difficult to feel whole,

0:05:05 > 0:05:07especially when you're relying on...

0:05:07 > 0:05:09If you're the alpha male in your home and now here...

0:05:10 > 0:05:13..your fiance is doing everything.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16When the fatigue hits you, it's almost like you become drunk.

0:05:16 > 0:05:21You can't make simple decisions and it becomes physically very painful.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23My eyesight will become quite tunnelled,

0:05:23 > 0:05:26and all of a sudden you can hear everyone's conversation

0:05:25 > 0:05:28and it's very loud and it's very overwhelming.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31And you just can't think.

0:05:31 > 0:05:33You've lost that ability to cope.

0:05:33 > 0:05:35We need to give him support.

0:05:35 > 0:05:39We need to help him to manage the stress level.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41Despite his fragile health,

0:05:41 > 0:05:44Dan is desperate to support Suzy in the build-up to the wedding.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46But more than anything,

0:05:46 > 0:05:49he's set his heart on delivering the perfect groom's speech

0:05:49 > 0:05:51in front of all their family and friends.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56Worst case scenario is that my best man's having to prompt me,

0:05:56 > 0:05:57Suzy's having to hold me up

0:05:57 > 0:06:01and that it's just completely apparent that I've been unwell.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03I would be really disappointed with that.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05I'd be pretty damn mortified.

0:06:05 > 0:06:06It's so important that we help him

0:06:06 > 0:06:09with the speech cos that's the only moment that's really going to be...

0:06:10 > 0:06:14..from the heart. Correct. The spotlight will be right on him.

0:06:13 > 0:06:17If I don't manage my stroke and the fatigue and the physical and mental

0:06:17 > 0:06:23symptoms and push myself too hard, my wedding day will be a disaster.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27Get in there, you wee beggar.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31Over the next week, the sages will be doing everything they can

0:06:31 > 0:06:35to make sure Dan gets the big day he deserves.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39Fiance Suzy knows they are taking part in a documentary,

0:06:39 > 0:06:42but doesn't know that Dan will be receiving wisdom

0:06:42 > 0:06:45from around the world via an earpiece.

0:06:45 > 0:06:47I am knackered today.

0:06:47 > 0:06:48I am really feeling it.

0:06:48 > 0:06:50I am really struggling already.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57It's fair to say today's effort was a disappointment.

0:06:57 > 0:06:58LAUGHS

0:06:58 > 0:07:00Don't laugh. I put my heart and soul into them.

0:07:04 > 0:07:08Over in Norway, health and lifestyle guru Lilian

0:07:08 > 0:07:11has a thing or two to say about Dan's choice of cuisine.

0:07:13 > 0:07:14This is a disgusting diet.

0:07:14 > 0:07:16This type of food is going to clog

0:07:16 > 0:07:19up his arteries further so he might have another stroke, even.

0:07:19 > 0:07:23And it's going to take down his energy level and his vitality.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26That's good.

0:07:26 > 0:07:29I would never eat a hamburger if they paid me 1 million.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35As Dan tucks into a second cheeseburger,

0:07:35 > 0:07:38Lilian is enjoying an organic smoothie,

0:07:38 > 0:07:43and has a few thoughts on how to boost the groom's low energy levels.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44Hi, Dan.

0:07:46 > 0:07:48Hello? Dan, can you hear me?

0:07:49 > 0:07:52So I just thought I'd write them all out and we'll faff about with it

0:07:52 > 0:07:54later. Otherwise I'm not going to get this done.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57This is Lilian from Norway. I'm your Norwegian sage.

0:07:56 > 0:08:00I was wondering if you could go to a room by yourself

0:08:00 > 0:08:02so we could chat a little bit?

0:08:03 > 0:08:07Where has my work phone gone? I've just got to call the office.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10Yeah.

0:08:12 > 0:08:14Hi, Dan. Hello.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17I just kind of overheard you said that you're not feeling so well?

0:08:17 > 0:08:21No. A big part of stroke recovery is fatigue.

0:08:21 > 0:08:24Just really been battling to sort of get through the day.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27I want to help you with that aspect of your life.

0:08:27 > 0:08:31I am what you call a nutritionist and I am a diet consultant.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34OK. I do have a question, actually.

0:08:33 > 0:08:38Yeah? I tend to lean towards sugars to give me a little boost

0:08:38 > 0:08:40and I know that's probably not a good thing to do.

0:08:40 > 0:08:42Yeah. It's not just the white sugar, by the way, Dan,

0:08:42 > 0:08:44it's the white flour products.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47OK. Yeah, like white flour, actually,

0:08:46 > 0:08:49when it goes into your system turns into sugar in your body.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52Did you know that? No, I didn't know that, no.

0:08:52 > 0:08:54So if you could go to a health food store and get yourself

0:08:54 > 0:08:58some organic dates and maybe some dried figs?

0:08:58 > 0:09:00Right. That has natural sugars but

0:09:00 > 0:09:04doesn't spike your blood sugar the way regular white sugar does.

0:09:04 > 0:09:08But it gives you energy. OK. I'm going to give that a go.

0:09:08 > 0:09:09And alcohol by the way?

0:09:09 > 0:09:12Did you have a plan to drink a lot of alcohol at your wedding?

0:09:12 > 0:09:15I have a huge plan to drink a lot of alcohol at my wedding, yeah.

0:09:15 > 0:09:19Yeah, you definitely have an excuse Dan, but don't overdo it.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24I hate dried fruit. I hate raisins.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27I hate all that guff. But I'll see what happens.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30Do you want a drink of anything, darling? Maybe just a squash.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34With Lilian's warning ringing in his ears,

0:09:34 > 0:09:37Dan decides to opt for straight water

0:09:37 > 0:09:39over his go-to sugary squash drink...

0:09:41 > 0:09:45Just going to drink the water! Way to go, Dan!

0:09:44 > 0:09:47..before heading upstairs to start

0:09:47 > 0:09:50work on that all-important wedding speech.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53I'm knackered. This is going to take me a while.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57Another side-effect of Dan's stroke is feeling panicked in crowds,

0:09:57 > 0:10:00so speaking to 120 wedding guests at

0:10:00 > 0:10:03the end of the week will be a tall order.

0:10:04 > 0:10:09Luckily for Dan, over in New York, with three marriages between them,

0:10:09 > 0:10:11retired cops Mark and Joe have more

0:10:11 > 0:10:14than a little experience in this department.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17What happened at your wedding? With your speech?

0:10:17 > 0:10:21I was nervous as anything. It was like a blur. I was babbling.

0:10:21 > 0:10:24Did you ever cry at your wedding? No. You've been crying ever since?

0:10:24 > 0:10:26THEY LAUGH

0:10:30 > 0:10:31Hey, Dan. It's Joe. How you doing?

0:10:31 > 0:10:34How you doing, John? I'm good, thank you.

0:10:34 > 0:10:35It looks like we come from a little

0:10:35 > 0:10:37bit of a busier place then you come from.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39Yes, I like the countryside. I like it quiet.

0:10:39 > 0:10:43So you're working on a speech? I'm trying my best.

0:10:43 > 0:10:44What are you going to write about?

0:10:44 > 0:10:46Do you know what, it's a funny thing.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49I don't want the stroke to have to feature

0:10:49 > 0:10:51and I don't really want to talk about it,

0:10:51 > 0:10:54but it has defined who we are.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57We're a better and more loving couple because of what happened.

0:10:57 > 0:11:00You know, it sounds like you took your darkest time

0:11:00 > 0:11:02and made it into your finest hour.

0:11:02 > 0:11:06Yeah. You have to tip your hat to this and acknowledge the event that

0:11:06 > 0:11:09happened, because obviously you guys have gotten closer.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11I guess I just want to prove to

0:11:10 > 0:11:13everyone that I've beaten it and I'm still me.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16Even though it tried to kill me, essentially, I've beaten it.

0:11:16 > 0:11:18I keep saying to Suzy, the best is yet to come.

0:11:18 > 0:11:19That sounds like a speech right there.

0:11:19 > 0:11:22You've got your speech right there. Right there. It's sincere.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25That's a good footnote that one, wasn't it? I better write that down.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27Yeah, let's write this down. Write from the heart.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29That's what she wants to hear though, I would imagine.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32"I'm going to be here for you, as you were for me,"

0:11:32 > 0:11:35and it sounds like you recognise her needs.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39Sorry. It's all right.

0:11:38 > 0:11:41Hold back. Yeah.

0:11:41 > 0:11:43Is she getting this? Mm.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48Jolly good. Do you want me to go somewhere else?

0:11:48 > 0:11:50No, I'm done now. I'm done. All right.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55She's pretty, isn't she? Yeah, she's adorable.

0:11:55 > 0:11:57I can't wait to hear this speech.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59I mean, you're a very dynamic person

0:11:59 > 0:12:01and we're more than happy to put our two cents in.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04Thank you. I appreciate that.

0:12:04 > 0:12:08I'll give it my best for you two guys. Excellent.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11It's an important step.

0:12:11 > 0:12:15He's got to impress on Suzy how important she is in his life.

0:12:19 > 0:12:21Later that afternoon,

0:12:21 > 0:12:24Dan insists on helping Suzy set things up for the wedding reception,

0:12:24 > 0:12:26to be held in the village hall.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29Three tables on the top table and

0:12:29 > 0:12:31then two tables together, but four lots.

0:12:31 > 0:12:33How're we doing?

0:12:33 > 0:12:37We have got to arrange all the tables, put the tablecloths on,

0:12:37 > 0:12:39and then dress the tables.

0:12:39 > 0:12:40How are the stress levels?

0:12:44 > 0:12:46I've never been to a white wedding.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48I've just heard a lot about because I'm a curious kind of person,

0:12:48 > 0:12:51always want to know about this and that.

0:12:51 > 0:12:53They don't normally get married in their houses.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56They also go to a certain venue. Maybe the hall? Yes.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59Then they have to book certain seats for certain people.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02You know, black culture, it's the more the merrier. It is.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05And the wedding will take the whole day and the whole night.

0:13:05 > 0:13:07Whole night.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10And when we cook, there will be two cows that will be slaughtered.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14Shut that door. If we can't open

0:13:14 > 0:13:17this door, we have a serious problem, don't we?

0:13:17 > 0:13:19Anyone know a locksmith?

0:13:19 > 0:13:23We've left the table plan at home. That's good. Yeah, helpfully.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25Do you want me to go and get it? Do you want the paper one?

0:13:25 > 0:13:30Yeah. Or the other one? The paper one that's on the fridge. Right.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35Dan desperately wants to be involved,

0:13:35 > 0:13:38but he's not really up to it.

0:13:38 > 0:13:40How are you feeling? Physically, not great.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43He's getting stressed and I think the stress is

0:13:43 > 0:13:45because he's feeling tired.

0:13:45 > 0:13:46The stroke, he'd be coping fine and

0:13:46 > 0:13:49he's not coping as well as he would normally cope.

0:13:49 > 0:13:51Yeah, he is. I think he's struggling.

0:13:51 > 0:13:54I'm really tired. I've just had to go and get some decorations from the

0:13:54 > 0:13:59top of the stairs and, honestly, I was so shattered by the end of that.

0:14:03 > 0:14:06Hello, Dan. Hiya, Lilian. How are you doing?

0:14:06 > 0:14:08Wholemeal bread. I took your advice.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11You did? Wow.

0:14:11 > 0:14:13Well done. Very handsome, Dan.

0:14:13 > 0:14:15Thank you. I don't feel handsome.

0:14:15 > 0:14:17I feel extremely stressed.

0:14:17 > 0:14:19Are you in a quiet place all by yourself now,

0:14:19 > 0:14:23so I can share with you a little bit of breathing exercise technique?

0:14:23 > 0:14:25Yeah, OK. That'll take down the

0:14:25 > 0:14:27stress and will make you relax better.

0:14:27 > 0:14:29Hold on. Let me lose my toast.

0:14:31 > 0:14:33OK.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36Right, I'm ready. You can close your eyes.

0:14:36 > 0:14:39Right. Try and breathe a little slower.

0:14:39 > 0:14:42Try to focus on your stomach, you know, below your chest,

0:14:42 > 0:14:44your stomach area.

0:14:44 > 0:14:46You crack on, Lilian. I'm enjoying this.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51If Suzy comes home and catches me laying on this,

0:14:51 > 0:14:52I'm for the high jump.

0:14:54 > 0:14:58Dan's absence hasn't gone unnoticed.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00He's been quite a while.

0:15:00 > 0:15:04But I think because of the stroke he just takes much longer now.

0:15:04 > 0:15:07Take a deep breath and you relax.

0:15:07 > 0:15:09As you breathe out,

0:15:09 > 0:15:11focus on your pelvic area.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14And as you let go and breathe out,

0:15:14 > 0:15:18you let go of all the tension in your pelvic area.

0:15:18 > 0:15:20So if you keep on doing this, Dan,

0:15:20 > 0:15:21like you take a little time for yourself,

0:15:21 > 0:15:23ten minutes a day or whatever,

0:15:23 > 0:15:25you will learn to relax your mind with your body.

0:15:25 > 0:15:27I'm so glad, now you have some physical stuff,

0:15:27 > 0:15:32some mental stuff to work with and you have dieting down.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34Yeah. So you are going to become

0:15:34 > 0:15:37this phenomenal individual when you're getting married, Dan.

0:15:37 > 0:15:39I hope so. Fingers crossed.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43Feeling calmer after a spot of meditation,

0:15:43 > 0:15:48a rejuvenated Dan finally turns up with the all-important table plan.

0:15:48 > 0:15:51Hello. Nice to see you.

0:15:51 > 0:15:54Maybe could you just leave stuff out in the hallway, please?

0:15:55 > 0:15:57Thank you very much.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00Nice to see me? I've only been, like, 15 minutes. Sorry.

0:16:03 > 0:16:07Extremely bizarre, the little voice talking in my ear.

0:16:07 > 0:16:09I've not had the best of days today, physically.

0:16:09 > 0:16:13I woke up this morning and within 45 minutes

0:16:13 > 0:16:15I was getting pretty overwhelmed and tired.

0:16:15 > 0:16:17It's strange, like, a little bit of advice from a stranger

0:16:17 > 0:16:21is enough to completely change your mood. It's bonkers.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24Bonkers idea. But so far today it's been really rewarding.

0:16:24 > 0:16:28It kind of gives me a lot of hope for tomorrow, really.

0:16:34 > 0:16:35If you want to put the trousers and

0:16:35 > 0:16:38the shirts on and bring, like, the waistcoats and the jackets down...

0:16:38 > 0:16:40The following day, Dan's ushers

0:16:40 > 0:16:42arrive at the house for a suit fitting.

0:16:45 > 0:16:47Oh!

0:16:47 > 0:16:50I don't know who's going to count for me to open my eyes.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54Uh! The old man is changing.

0:16:57 > 0:16:58But almost immediately,

0:16:58 > 0:17:02Dan's chronic tiredness takes hold and he's struggling.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05I might have to rethink the old kneeling down bit.

0:17:06 > 0:17:09I think Dan might feel a bit stressed.

0:17:12 > 0:17:14Right, I need to get out of this suit.

0:17:14 > 0:17:16When his fatigue hits like this,

0:17:16 > 0:17:20Dan's only hope for recovery is complete rest until it passes.

0:17:21 > 0:17:25Oh, God, he is sleeping. Yes, this man is so exhausted.

0:17:26 > 0:17:29Do you think he's going to cope? I'm a bit worried about that.

0:17:33 > 0:17:37But with the full church rehearsal taking place that afternoon,

0:17:36 > 0:17:39Dan pushes himself to be there.

0:17:39 > 0:17:43And I'm going to go to the front of the church and then I will ask

0:17:43 > 0:17:46everybody to stand for the entrance of the bride.

0:17:48 > 0:17:52Over in Ireland, Sister Una tunes in to see how Dan's coping.

0:17:53 > 0:17:56I wonder how he's feeling?

0:17:56 > 0:17:59You know, there's a lot happening for him there.

0:17:59 > 0:18:02Who gives this woman to be married to this man?

0:18:02 > 0:18:05So I think if everybody wants to go back to their respective places.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10Hello, Dan. I'm Sister Una and I've been watching.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12I'd love to have a word with you.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14With the others out the door,

0:18:14 > 0:18:17Dan grabs a discrete moment with his new guardian angel.

0:18:20 > 0:18:23Hello, Dan. I'm just wondering how you are at this point?

0:18:23 > 0:18:27Are you exhausted? Well, Sister, I am very, very tired.

0:18:27 > 0:18:31But at the same time, I'm really, really excited.

0:18:32 > 0:18:34I can't wait for Saturday now.

0:18:34 > 0:18:36It's obvious to me that you love each other.

0:18:36 > 0:18:39This wedding is saying goodbye to some bad times and...

0:18:41 > 0:18:43..putting some clear water in front of us.

0:18:43 > 0:18:45Right on. Go for it.

0:18:45 > 0:18:49Yeah. You're going to be a stunning couple, you know, that day.

0:18:49 > 0:18:50Yeah, I hope I don't let her down on the day.

0:18:50 > 0:18:54I hope I give her a good day because she really deserves it.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56Would you like me to give you a blessing?

0:18:56 > 0:18:59That would be very nice. Thank you very much.

0:18:59 > 0:19:04May the God of creation recreate you and your beautiful bride-to-be

0:19:04 > 0:19:07in a new way. May God love you,

0:19:07 > 0:19:11bless you and continue on your journey of deep faith and joy,

0:19:11 > 0:19:14and above all, joy in one another. Thank you.

0:19:14 > 0:19:16Take care, for now. Thank you, Sister.

0:19:16 > 0:19:19Hopefully we'll touch base again. I hope so.

0:19:19 > 0:19:21I'll have a pint of Guinness for you later on.

0:19:21 > 0:19:23There's nothing like a pint of Guinness.

0:19:23 > 0:19:27You're damn right there. God bless for now. Goodnight. Goodnight.

0:19:35 > 0:19:38Where do you find these people? They're incredible.

0:19:38 > 0:19:40In two days, their advice and their

0:19:40 > 0:19:42support has become so important to me.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45Especially on a run-up to a wedding.

0:19:45 > 0:19:49It's so stressful and you're trying to be the best you can be.

0:19:49 > 0:19:52But I'm lucky cos I have someone who has a little pep talk with me,

0:19:51 > 0:19:55every now and again and gives me a boost, and gets me going again.

0:19:54 > 0:19:56I feel like I've got a little army

0:19:56 > 0:19:59of guardian angels who are doing their best for me.

0:19:59 > 0:20:02They have really become very, very important to me when I talk to them.

0:20:02 > 0:20:04FOOTSTEPS APPROACH

0:20:12 > 0:20:14With a day to go before the wedding,

0:20:14 > 0:20:18Dan seems to be following his Norwegian sage's healthy advice.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21Look how sporty he looks.

0:20:22 > 0:20:24Dan!

0:20:25 > 0:20:27Now he's walking around in that kitchen with a lot of energy.

0:20:27 > 0:20:31Dan! He's eating an apple, yes!

0:20:32 > 0:20:34Dan, it's Lilian.

0:20:34 > 0:20:37Can you hear me? Hiya, Lilian. How're you doing?

0:20:37 > 0:20:40Did you go to the health food store? I did. You did?

0:20:40 > 0:20:41I've got loads of fruit.

0:20:41 > 0:20:44Dan! Kiwis... Kiwis!

0:20:44 > 0:20:47Apples, whatever these are. They're really nice.

0:20:46 > 0:20:49These are the dates, actually. Oh, they are dates?

0:20:49 > 0:20:53Oh, I love those. And I'm drinking lots of water.

0:20:53 > 0:20:57OK, good! And I hope that you will consider cutting down on meat,

0:20:57 > 0:20:59so you can be light and energetic

0:20:59 > 0:21:02and as happy as possible on your wedding day.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05If you tell me it's worth trying, I'll give it a go.

0:21:05 > 0:21:08Good! I'm glad I have your trust, Dan.

0:21:13 > 0:21:15Lilian's sorting out Dan's diet,

0:21:15 > 0:21:18but with a big speech still hanging over him,

0:21:18 > 0:21:20it's over to ex-cops Mark and Joe.

0:21:21 > 0:21:25Man, he's banging away on those keys. He's typing away.

0:21:25 > 0:21:29Hey, Dan? It's good to hear from you two. I call you guys my wise guys.

0:21:29 > 0:21:31There you go! There you go.

0:21:31 > 0:21:33How's your speech coming?

0:21:33 > 0:21:36I know on the day, I'm going to be very emotional.

0:21:36 > 0:21:39What's your advice on just managing that?

0:21:39 > 0:21:42I want to hold my nerve until I've done it.

0:21:42 > 0:21:44Generally, I suggest drinking heavily.

0:21:44 > 0:21:46LAUGHS

0:21:46 > 0:21:49I prefer you do that after you get through the speech.

0:21:49 > 0:21:51But you have to be emotional about it.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53My advice would be continue doing what you're doing.

0:21:53 > 0:21:56You've made that decision to move forward,

0:21:56 > 0:21:58to put one step in front of the next, and keep coming forward.

0:21:58 > 0:22:00This is the same type of challenge.

0:22:00 > 0:22:03Rely on your past ability to get to this point,

0:22:03 > 0:22:06and have a little confidence in that in itself.

0:22:06 > 0:22:09And I think you're going to be great

0:22:09 > 0:22:11cos you're an inspiration.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14People are going to hear and see and feel what you're saying up there,

0:22:14 > 0:22:17and they're going to say, "Wow. Look at this."

0:22:16 > 0:22:20Yeah. "Look at this." Thank you. Fantastic.

0:22:21 > 0:22:24The reality is nothing really works out exactly the way it's planned.

0:22:24 > 0:22:26Right. He's going to be emotional,

0:22:26 > 0:22:28and he needs to address that mentally,

0:22:28 > 0:22:30emotionally, before he goes into battle.

0:22:38 > 0:22:42The wedding decorations are urgently needed at the village hall,

0:22:42 > 0:22:44so Dan fights his fatigue and

0:22:44 > 0:22:48ignores the pleas of the sages to slow down.

0:22:48 > 0:22:50Look at what he's doing. No! Dan, no!

0:22:50 > 0:22:53You can't do that! You're not well.

0:22:53 > 0:22:55Look at this!

0:22:55 > 0:22:59Go lie down. Yeah. Get some rest. And stop picking up those boxes.

0:23:03 > 0:23:06The exertions of wedding prep are taking their toll.

0:23:10 > 0:23:12I feel so sorry for him, you know.

0:23:12 > 0:23:15All he wants to do is help Suzy for this wedding,

0:23:15 > 0:23:17and he's just like over-exerting himself.

0:23:17 > 0:23:19I'm, like, really worried that he

0:23:18 > 0:23:21could have another stroke or something.

0:23:30 > 0:23:35Cheers, everybody! Not wanting to let his ushers down, that evening,

0:23:35 > 0:23:37Dan drags himself to the pub.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39I feel really, really tired.

0:23:39 > 0:23:41Mentally, I'm done.

0:23:43 > 0:23:44When I get really tired, the nerve

0:23:44 > 0:23:46endings decide they don't want to play ball

0:23:46 > 0:23:49and they just start shooting pain everywhere.

0:23:49 > 0:23:51I want to be pin sharp tomorrow.

0:23:51 > 0:23:55And I'm really worried about messing it up and looking silly.

0:23:55 > 0:23:57The speeches for me are the target point

0:23:57 > 0:24:00where I'll relax and I'll just, "I've done it. We've done it."

0:24:00 > 0:24:04That will be the point where we have triumphed, I guess,

0:24:03 > 0:24:06over something that's been horrible for both of us.

0:24:06 > 0:24:09Until that point, I'm going to be stressed, definitely.

0:24:13 > 0:24:15COCKEREL CROWS

0:24:15 > 0:24:18SPEAKS OWN LANGUAGE

0:24:18 > 0:24:21The wedding day has finally arrived.

0:24:21 > 0:24:26And across the globe, Dan's secret VIP guests will have ringside seats.

0:24:26 > 0:24:29He's got his lucky red pants. Look at that! Beautiful!

0:24:29 > 0:24:33He just took out a new trouser and a suit!

0:24:33 > 0:24:36Hands up who's a little bit excited.

0:24:36 > 0:24:38In South-Africa,

0:24:38 > 0:24:42the whole family have turned out in their finest for the big occasion.

0:24:44 > 0:24:47Babies, this is a church, you know?

0:24:47 > 0:24:48Church.

0:24:50 > 0:24:53He looks healthy. He looks like he has energy.

0:24:54 > 0:24:58Hello. Good morning, Dan. You're looking awesome today!

0:24:58 > 0:25:02Thank you. I'm buzzing, I've got to say.

0:25:02 > 0:25:05You're buzzing. Sorry, I'm talking to myself. I'm a nut-case.

0:25:05 > 0:25:09Did you know, I just want to wish you lots of luck today.

0:25:09 > 0:25:11And try to pace yourself a little bit.

0:25:11 > 0:25:12Thank you, Lilian.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16ORGAN PLAYS

0:25:16 > 0:25:20Everybody's dressed to the nines.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22I feel like I'm underdressed.

0:25:22 > 0:25:25Crowds of people are arriving, which can be a stress trigger for Dan,

0:25:25 > 0:25:28so the sages are making every effort to keep him relaxed.

0:25:28 > 0:25:31Hi, Dan. We're here with you.

0:25:31 > 0:25:34Your special day has finally arrived.

0:25:34 > 0:25:37Thank you. I'm glad you're watching. I'm glad you're here.

0:25:37 > 0:25:40Good luck! Hold on. Thank you for your support.

0:25:40 > 0:25:44That's been amazing. It's been magical having you guys in my ear.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47Hi, Emily. How are you doing? Good. How are you?

0:25:51 > 0:25:53Here we go.

0:25:53 > 0:25:55MUSIC: The Wedding March

0:26:01 > 0:26:04Oh, this dress is beyond gorgeous.

0:26:04 > 0:26:05God...

0:26:07 > 0:26:09Wow...

0:26:15 > 0:26:19She looks so happy. And Dan looks so happy.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21Excuse me.

0:26:21 > 0:26:25First, I'm required to ask anyone present

0:26:25 > 0:26:29who knows a reason why these persons may not lawfully marry

0:26:29 > 0:26:31to declare it now.

0:26:32 > 0:26:34CHUCKLES

0:26:34 > 0:26:38I, Daniel, take you, Suzanne, to be my wife.

0:26:38 > 0:26:40For better, for worse.

0:26:40 > 0:26:42For better, for worse.

0:26:42 > 0:26:45In sickness and in health.

0:26:45 > 0:26:47In sickness and in health.

0:26:47 > 0:26:50I'm getting a little teary eyed. I got a little emotional there.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53Imagine that. Want to hold hands? No.

0:26:53 > 0:26:57I therefore proclaim that they are husband and wife.

0:26:57 > 0:27:00Now, Dan, you may kiss your bride.

0:27:00 > 0:27:04Come on, give her a good smooch, for God's sakes. Yeah.

0:27:04 > 0:27:06CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:27:06 > 0:27:09ELISA ULULATES

0:27:12 > 0:27:13We did it.

0:27:15 > 0:27:17I'm so happy for them.

0:27:21 > 0:27:23Cheers, husband.

0:27:23 > 0:27:28Dan's following Lilian's advice and keeping alcohol to a minimum,

0:27:28 > 0:27:31as he still has to face his biggest challenge of the night -

0:27:31 > 0:27:32the speech.

0:27:34 > 0:27:36Beautiful reception. Look at all those people. Wow!

0:27:36 > 0:27:39I think Danny's starting to look a little tired, man.

0:27:39 > 0:27:43Yeah. It might just be anxiousness, because he knows the moment's here,

0:27:43 > 0:27:46but this is his only one chance to do what he's got to do.

0:27:46 > 0:27:48He'll do it. He'll be fine.

0:27:48 > 0:27:51Right, I'm going to nip for the loo.

0:27:51 > 0:27:53Hey, Dan, it's Mark and Joe.

0:27:53 > 0:27:56Hi, guys. Hey. Congratulations.

0:27:56 > 0:27:58Congratulations. How does it feel? It feels amazing, actually.

0:27:58 > 0:28:00It feels really good. Hey, I just

0:28:00 > 0:28:03want to give you a little advice before you go and do your speech.

0:28:03 > 0:28:05I just want to tell you, you get one shot at this.

0:28:05 > 0:28:08Not to make you nervous. You trained for it.

0:28:08 > 0:28:11You studied it, you wrote it, you know it, you felt it,

0:28:11 > 0:28:13you're ready for it. Do not psych yourself out.

0:28:13 > 0:28:16You're going to do great. You just speak from the heart.

0:28:16 > 0:28:19We're there with you in spirit.

0:28:21 > 0:28:22APPLAUSE

0:28:22 > 0:28:25Try and make myself look a bit more intelligent.

0:28:25 > 0:28:28Knock 'em dead, Danny. Knock 'em dead.

0:28:28 > 0:28:31Phew. So now it's all about me. Well, actually, that's a lie.

0:28:31 > 0:28:33It's all about this beautiful lady here,

0:28:33 > 0:28:37who I now have the honour of calling my wife. Mrs Needham.

0:28:37 > 0:28:40It's no secret that myself and Suzy met on a dating website.

0:28:40 > 0:28:43I'm not too proud to tell you also, she messaged me first.

0:28:43 > 0:28:45LAUGHTER

0:28:48 > 0:28:51When I got a message from her, it blew my mismatched socks off.

0:28:52 > 0:28:55I thought the girl was probably messing with me,

0:28:54 > 0:28:58or extremely desperate for a free steak and chips.

0:28:58 > 0:29:01But I decided to respond for the hell of it. I'm bloody glad I did.

0:29:01 > 0:29:04He's handled this well so far. Mm-hmm.

0:29:04 > 0:29:06I was met with one hell of a sight,

0:29:06 > 0:29:08a brunette in a summer dress and killer heels.

0:29:08 > 0:29:11"Hot diggety dog," I thought. THEY LAUGH

0:29:11 > 0:29:14He's knocking this out of the park. He really is.

0:29:14 > 0:29:17I resigned myself to the fact I stood no chance whatsoever,

0:29:17 > 0:29:19but would have a date under my belt to tell the lads.

0:29:19 > 0:29:23Worst case, I'd tell them I'd seen her boobs. They'd never know.

0:29:23 > 0:29:26THEY LAUGH He didn't.

0:29:27 > 0:29:31Yeah, he did. THEY WHOOP

0:29:31 > 0:29:34I found her company enchanting. I couldn't get enough of her.

0:29:34 > 0:29:37Funny, intelligent, and so, so beautiful.

0:29:37 > 0:29:40We were happy. I mean, really happy. Then things got funky.

0:29:43 > 0:29:45I had a brainstem stroke,

0:29:45 > 0:29:47as you all know.

0:29:50 > 0:29:51Excuse me.

0:29:52 > 0:29:54Wow, he's getting choked up. Yeah.

0:29:58 > 0:30:00Sorry, boys.

0:30:00 > 0:30:02He's doing good.

0:30:04 > 0:30:07Without this girl, I would be dead.

0:30:08 > 0:30:11I wouldn't have got up. I wouldn't have had the courage.

0:30:16 > 0:30:19But that bastard stroke has made us what we are,

0:30:19 > 0:30:21unbreakable as a couple, undaunted by pain,

0:30:21 > 0:30:24with a strength you can only really find in someone

0:30:24 > 0:30:26who loves you without hesitation or question.

0:30:27 > 0:30:29When I came round, I asked her one question -

0:30:29 > 0:30:32"If you're going to run, now's the time to do it."

0:30:32 > 0:30:34Without hesitation, she said, "I'm not going anywhere."

0:30:34 > 0:30:36I never lost a night's sleep after that.

0:30:36 > 0:30:39I knew we could beat it, then and there.

0:30:39 > 0:30:43Thank you all for being here today to support Suzy and myself.

0:30:42 > 0:30:44Not just for today, but for the

0:30:44 > 0:30:47support you've given us both over the last ten months.

0:30:47 > 0:30:49I've been very lucky.

0:30:49 > 0:30:52I have had huge support from all over the world.

0:30:52 > 0:30:55Strangers have given me their time and compassion.

0:30:55 > 0:30:58New York wise guy cops, South African healers,

0:30:57 > 0:31:02so many have let me lean on them a little without asking for return.

0:31:02 > 0:31:04Did he say what I thought he said? Yes.

0:31:05 > 0:31:09But Suzy has done this on her own and never once wavered.

0:31:09 > 0:31:12That is my girl. She's stronger than steel inside, but the most beautiful

0:31:12 > 0:31:16living soul I've ever seen on the outside.

0:31:16 > 0:31:20Please, ladies and gentlemen, would you raise your glasses to my wife,

0:31:19 > 0:31:22Suzanne Needham?

0:31:22 > 0:31:24MANY: Suzanne. To Suzanne.

0:31:24 > 0:31:27To Suzy. To Suzy. Thank you, everybody.

0:31:27 > 0:31:29THEY CLAP

0:31:32 > 0:31:34ELISA ULULATES

0:31:36 > 0:31:39Tremendous speech. Well done, well done, Dan.

0:31:39 > 0:31:41Dan, real proud of you.

0:31:41 > 0:31:45I was nervous and just having a quick pep talk with the wise

0:31:45 > 0:31:50guys was really nice, so I kind of went in there full of beans.

0:31:50 > 0:31:52I think I have succeeded and there's

0:31:52 > 0:31:55been a few times when I thought I was going to...

0:31:55 > 0:31:59..going to lose it a bit and not be of use, but every now and again,

0:31:59 > 0:32:02having someone whisper in your ear, "Don't worry, you're doing

0:32:02 > 0:32:04"the right thing. You're an inspiration,"

0:32:04 > 0:32:07just gave me a huge boost. It's been brilliant.

0:32:07 > 0:32:10Another job well done. Here you go, buddy. He did good, man.

0:32:22 > 0:32:24Next around the world,

0:32:24 > 0:32:27the sages are getting ready to help another Brit

0:32:27 > 0:32:30in need of their wisdom and guidance.

0:32:30 > 0:32:35And adding to the advice in Italy are chefs Chiara and mama Agata.

0:32:44 > 0:32:4837-year-old Brett is a nervous first-time dad,

0:32:48 > 0:32:50leaving hospital with twin boys

0:32:50 > 0:32:53and a wife recovering from major surgery.

0:32:53 > 0:32:56This is Gus and this is Jude.

0:32:56 > 0:32:59Aww. Aren't they adorable?

0:32:59 > 0:33:01Look how small!

0:33:02 > 0:33:05It's been a gruelling pregnancy.

0:33:05 > 0:33:07Jess was in and out of hospital for months

0:33:07 > 0:33:10and the twins were born five weeks prematurely.

0:33:13 > 0:33:15Unbelievable.

0:33:15 > 0:33:18They really didn't get to enjoy a lot of the pregnancy,

0:33:18 > 0:33:21like some couples get to, leading up to it, painting the room

0:33:21 > 0:33:23and picking names.

0:33:23 > 0:33:25Hey, gorgeous boy.

0:33:26 > 0:33:29They're all leaving hospital today and Brett's worried

0:33:29 > 0:33:32he's going to be out of his depth.

0:33:32 > 0:33:35You know, Jess is recovering from what is essentially major surgery,

0:33:35 > 0:33:37so a lot of the responsibility, I think,

0:33:37 > 0:33:40in the early days, is going to fall onto my shoulders.

0:33:40 > 0:33:41I haven't had a chance, really,

0:33:41 > 0:33:43to go to any parent groups or anything

0:33:43 > 0:33:47because we've been in and out of hospital, so I'm a little bit

0:33:47 > 0:33:50worried about that feeling of being useless.

0:33:50 > 0:33:52The sages will be on hand

0:33:52 > 0:33:55to assist Brett for this first tricky week as he looks

0:33:55 > 0:33:59after both the newborns and his worn-out wife.

0:33:59 > 0:34:02I think it's going to be great to have the sages' advice.

0:34:02 > 0:34:05Any kind of help is going to be massively beneficial

0:34:05 > 0:34:06to me and the boys, I think.

0:34:10 > 0:34:14As Brett's earpiece goes live, the new parents arrive home,

0:34:14 > 0:34:17exhausted from lack of sleep.

0:34:22 > 0:34:24Are you sure this is Jude?

0:34:24 > 0:34:28This is Jude. Yeah. Who are we supposed to feed?

0:34:28 > 0:34:30Jude. It's fine.

0:34:31 > 0:34:35I've had about seven cups of coffee this morning. It's all good.

0:34:35 > 0:34:38Jess knows they're taking part in a documentary,

0:34:38 > 0:34:42but doesn't know about the voices in her husband's ear.

0:34:48 > 0:34:52Over in Ireland, Sister Una and her neighbour, Danny,

0:34:52 > 0:34:55who has two kids of his own, want to offer support.

0:34:56 > 0:34:59Danny, I'm a general nurse and a midwife.

0:34:59 > 0:35:03Right. I loved delivering babies, and I delivered many.

0:35:05 > 0:35:07Good morning, Brett.

0:35:08 > 0:35:11This is Sister Una Boland from Ireland.

0:35:11 > 0:35:15If you could take yourself off to have a little chat...

0:35:17 > 0:35:18And you'll be a great help here

0:35:18 > 0:35:22because I could imagine how nervous Brett would be.

0:35:23 > 0:35:25I was the same.

0:35:26 > 0:35:29Lovely to meet you. In the past,

0:35:29 > 0:35:32I was a midwife and a nurse, and I would have delivered twins.

0:35:32 > 0:35:37How was the sleeping pattern? Do you take it all on, or what's going on?

0:35:37 > 0:35:40During the day, it's fine. There's a period, I guess,

0:35:40 > 0:35:43from sort of 10pm to 5am,

0:35:43 > 0:35:46where they're just not playing by the rules.

0:35:46 > 0:35:47What happened last night?

0:35:47 > 0:35:49I can't even remember. It was an absolute daze,

0:35:49 > 0:35:52but I think it was Gus just really struggled.

0:35:52 > 0:35:55I thought, "I'll go and get him now so he doesn't kick off and wake Jess

0:35:55 > 0:35:57"up," cos I just wanted her to try and sleep as much as she could

0:35:57 > 0:36:00last night. You're very kind and understanding, and you're right.

0:36:00 > 0:36:02What do you find the most stressful,

0:36:02 > 0:36:03if we could use that word?

0:36:03 > 0:36:06The most... You can definitely use that word.

0:36:06 > 0:36:09Do you know what, it's not knowing what's wrong. It's the thing of,

0:36:09 > 0:36:13like, you check the nappy and you think, "Surely it's not food..."

0:36:13 > 0:36:15Yes. As soon as that scream happens,

0:36:15 > 0:36:18it's like a switch and I'm up and I'm awake.

0:36:18 > 0:36:20I always feel for men

0:36:20 > 0:36:23because I think we can neglect them

0:36:23 > 0:36:26and they're going through a lot. Yeah, yeah.

0:36:26 > 0:36:29Is there anything you want to ask me? Do you want to move in?

0:36:29 > 0:36:31Wouldn't I love it!

0:36:31 > 0:36:34Why don't you go down, Brett, and see the boys?

0:36:34 > 0:36:35I'd love to give them a blessing.

0:36:35 > 0:36:40OK. In the spirit of trying new things, Brett gives it a go.

0:36:40 > 0:36:43Oh, that's lovely. May the God of creation...

0:36:45 > 0:36:46May the God of creation...

0:36:46 > 0:36:49Bless these beautiful twins.

0:36:49 > 0:36:50Bless these beautiful twins.

0:36:50 > 0:36:53I make this prayer through Christ Our Lord.

0:36:56 > 0:37:00Amen. Enjoy every minute of life, Brett.

0:37:00 > 0:37:02It passes fast. Don't waste it.

0:37:04 > 0:37:07All right? Mm. Good. You all right?

0:37:07 > 0:37:09Yeah, I'm right. Become religious all of a sudden?

0:37:09 > 0:37:12Something you want to say? That's what I'm going to suggest.

0:37:14 > 0:37:16I'm a staunch atheist.

0:37:19 > 0:37:21I've been rumbled straightaway.

0:37:21 > 0:37:25Brett may have narrowly escaped being found out by his wife.

0:37:30 > 0:37:35But now, over in Italy, culinary queens Chiara and mama Agata

0:37:35 > 0:37:38are ready to serve up some of their wisdom.

0:37:39 > 0:37:42During the day,

0:37:42 > 0:37:44they need to cut a moment to think about what they have to eat.

0:37:44 > 0:37:49Healthy. Because what she eats is what their kids eat.

0:37:49 > 0:37:54The mamas believe good food will make all the difference

0:37:54 > 0:37:57to Jess's recovery and the health of the twins.

0:37:57 > 0:38:01If she's breast-feeding, extra virgin olive oil, tomatoes,

0:38:01 > 0:38:04good quality ingredients will help her.

0:38:03 > 0:38:06Also good would be fennel tea, cos the fennel tea...

0:38:10 > 0:38:11A beer!

0:38:13 > 0:38:16Hello! Brett, can you hear me?

0:38:17 > 0:38:20I'm here with my mother, Mama Agata.

0:38:20 > 0:38:24We do believe that an important part of the family is the cooking.

0:38:24 > 0:38:27What do you normally eat at lunch or dinner?

0:38:27 > 0:38:30It's not been very good, to be honest.

0:38:30 > 0:38:33No. Then let's have a nice, quick spaghetti.

0:38:33 > 0:38:39Put on the skillet and some extra virgin olive oil and garlic in it.

0:38:54 > 0:38:57See? Easy. Smells amazing, yeah.

0:38:56 > 0:38:58Ahh, that is good.

0:39:00 > 0:39:03I'm going to leave this door open because it does add a lot of heat in

0:39:03 > 0:39:06that room. Oh, right, OK. Was there a reason why you shut it?

0:39:06 > 0:39:09No, no, no, I was just... I was just, erm...

0:39:11 > 0:39:15She's nosy. She doesn't understand what he's doing.

0:39:16 > 0:39:18Get out of my kitchen, you.

0:39:21 > 0:39:24I'll make you a nice lunch. Smells good.

0:39:26 > 0:39:28Right, water is boiling.

0:39:30 > 0:39:32Ugh.

0:39:32 > 0:39:33I'll stick the kettle on.

0:39:36 > 0:39:40I always tell the boys to cook because when the babies arrive,

0:39:40 > 0:39:43they can do what you are doing. They can help.

0:39:44 > 0:39:46Hmm?

0:39:46 > 0:39:49Yeah, don't taste too much of it. Jess will not get much!

0:39:54 > 0:39:56Dinner's ready.

0:40:00 > 0:40:02Is that all right? Lovely. Thank you, darling.

0:40:03 > 0:40:04Really nice.

0:40:07 > 0:40:09I loved talking with the Italian chefs

0:40:09 > 0:40:12because that was the best pasta I've ever made, bar none.

0:40:12 > 0:40:16It was just good general advice on nutrition and it's never really

0:40:16 > 0:40:18occurred to me how we can use food

0:40:18 > 0:40:21almost like a vehicle for showing each other love and, you know,

0:40:21 > 0:40:24understanding and support, and all these things,

0:40:24 > 0:40:26so, yeah, really enjoyed that.

0:40:27 > 0:40:29He did really a good job.

0:40:33 > 0:40:35BABY WAILS

0:40:35 > 0:40:38Later that evening, sleep deprivation seems to be

0:40:38 > 0:40:41taking its toll, so Brett decides to step up.

0:40:46 > 0:40:48It's like looking after two mini versions of me, isn't it?!

0:40:48 > 0:40:51It's all I want to be, I just want to be fed

0:40:51 > 0:40:52and sleep

0:40:52 > 0:40:54and the occasional rub.

0:40:56 > 0:40:59I don't care if they kick off, let me deal with it, all right?

0:40:59 > 0:41:03You get some sleep. You must get some sleep.

0:41:05 > 0:41:09It's going to be a long night ahead for novice Brett.

0:41:12 > 0:41:13BABY WAILS

0:41:13 > 0:41:15Come on, buddy.

0:41:16 > 0:41:19If you can sleep for eight hours, that would be great.

0:41:22 > 0:41:24BABY CRIES

0:41:24 > 0:41:29Night-time is one of the worst times and it's something that's thrown me

0:41:29 > 0:41:30way out of my comfort zone.

0:41:33 > 0:41:36One wakes up before the other, or both wake up at the same time.

0:41:36 > 0:41:39That's almost just as bad, because then one's screaming

0:41:39 > 0:41:42and you're trying to run around and do two things at once.

0:41:44 > 0:41:47And then you think, are you going to be up to the job?

0:41:47 > 0:41:50Am I going to be a good parent, a good dad?

0:41:50 > 0:41:51Am I going to be a good husband?

0:41:53 > 0:41:56All these things kind of go through your head.

0:41:56 > 0:41:57How have we managed that?

0:41:59 > 0:42:01You've sicked up all over your face there, mate.

0:42:03 > 0:42:05Oh, crap.

0:42:09 > 0:42:13Next morning, Sister Una is up bright and early.

0:42:13 > 0:42:15I mean, there should be other people doing this,

0:42:15 > 0:42:20but, like, I'm a very humble sister and I always do the right thing.

0:42:20 > 0:42:24A tired Brett and Jess have a friend over.

0:42:23 > 0:42:29The news is that the twins aren't sleeping well and Sister Una has

0:42:29 > 0:42:31a sneaky suspicion why.

0:42:31 > 0:42:34Hi, Brett. Look at the camera if you can hear me.

0:42:38 > 0:42:40Good. I was wondering, Brett,

0:42:40 > 0:42:43if you put the little fellow on your shoulder there and burped,

0:42:43 > 0:42:45would it help him to feed a little bit better?

0:42:45 > 0:42:48It's just the nurse and midwife in me is saying that.

0:42:49 > 0:42:52You might want to put him on your shoulder and burp him sometimes.

0:42:52 > 0:42:53That's a bit easier.

0:42:59 > 0:43:00Oh, that's lovely.

0:43:00 > 0:43:04You just feel free to be sick all down me, that's fine.

0:43:05 > 0:43:08Oh, there we go. I don't know which end that came from!

0:43:08 > 0:43:12Hear that? Like a man, isn't it?! Burping is very important,

0:43:12 > 0:43:15because it releases the wind

0:43:15 > 0:43:18and you put them down, they're more comfortable.

0:43:18 > 0:43:21I don't know which end. I'm at the business end, this end.

0:43:21 > 0:43:23I'll soon smell it. It's not...

0:43:23 > 0:43:24There's no way you can go again

0:43:24 > 0:43:27after what he did at five o'clock this morning.

0:43:26 > 0:43:30There's no way. Oh, my! He must have lost half his body weight.

0:43:31 > 0:43:3550 years ago, no way would a man be changing nappies

0:43:35 > 0:43:37and burping a child or feeding a child, no way.

0:43:38 > 0:43:41So that has changed - and for the better.

0:43:42 > 0:43:45Over in the city that also never sleeps,

0:43:45 > 0:43:49ex-New York cops Mark and Joe, with five kids between them,

0:43:49 > 0:43:52are keen to chip in with some advice for Brett.

0:43:52 > 0:43:56At their security firm's HQ, there are loads of other fathers

0:43:56 > 0:44:00who recall only too well how Brett must be feeling.

0:44:00 > 0:44:02Remember those days when your baby was that small?

0:44:05 > 0:44:10They tune in to find that Brett has surprised Jess, her mum and sister,

0:44:10 > 0:44:13by rustling up an Italian-style lunch.

0:44:15 > 0:44:17BABY CRIES

0:44:17 > 0:44:19I haven't heard that noise in a while.

0:44:20 > 0:44:22Oh, this poor couple.

0:44:22 > 0:44:25I'm starting to lactate just hearing them cry!

0:44:25 > 0:44:26I'm starting to cry.

0:44:26 > 0:44:29I mean, we're both parents, it shouldn't be a big deal.

0:44:28 > 0:44:31We should be able to give them some pointers.

0:44:31 > 0:44:32Yeah, in another 25 to 30 years,

0:44:32 > 0:44:34those kids will stop being difficult!

0:44:35 > 0:44:37Hey, Brett, I know you can hear us.

0:44:37 > 0:44:39Just saying hello.

0:44:39 > 0:44:43When you get a moment, and I know you don't have many free moments,

0:44:43 > 0:44:45maybe we can chat for a minute.

0:44:45 > 0:44:48Where's my phone? I'm expecting a call.

0:44:48 > 0:44:51He's going upstairs. My wife is against the binky.

0:44:51 > 0:44:53I kept one in my pocket.

0:44:52 > 0:44:56As soon as she walked out of the room...right in the mouth.

0:44:56 > 0:45:00That was... My son was like that. It was the only way. The only way?

0:45:00 > 0:45:03We're having a laugh over here because we just know

0:45:03 > 0:45:05what's going on over there.

0:45:06 > 0:45:08It's a lot going on. Yeah.

0:45:08 > 0:45:09How's the missus feeling?

0:45:09 > 0:45:12She puts on a brave face. She's tired. Can I suggest something?

0:45:12 > 0:45:16Yeah, go for it, yeah. Try to get her out of the house when you can.

0:45:16 > 0:45:19She needs to get out of there whether she realises it or not,

0:45:19 > 0:45:21I think. Yeah, she should get out, maybe get her hair done,

0:45:21 > 0:45:23maybe meet some friends.

0:45:23 > 0:45:26Whatever you have to do to get her to relax and rest,

0:45:26 > 0:45:30because if she doesn't rest, nothing good comes out of that.

0:45:30 > 0:45:32It's very important. I'll see if I can do something.

0:45:32 > 0:45:35Why don't you raise that subject with her now?

0:45:35 > 0:45:38Maybe go downstairs and just start the ball rolling,

0:45:38 > 0:45:41"Hey, why don't you take a break tomorrow and I'll take the kids?"

0:45:41 > 0:45:43Why don't you see what she says?

0:45:43 > 0:45:45What's everyone doing tomorrow?

0:45:45 > 0:45:48You two should go out to Costa or something tomorrow.

0:45:48 > 0:45:50I'll stay here with the kids. I don't mind.

0:45:50 > 0:45:52Got right to the point. Get some fresh air.

0:45:52 > 0:45:54I thought you meant taking the children with us.

0:45:54 > 0:45:56No, I'm just thinking you'll get some fresh air,

0:45:56 > 0:45:59even if it's just a flipping walk or something.

0:45:59 > 0:46:00Good job, good job, Brett.

0:46:00 > 0:46:02Yeah, you guys go out tomorrow, it'll be good.

0:46:02 > 0:46:04Make sure you take care of this tomorrow,

0:46:04 > 0:46:06set a time, get her outside, you take the kids.

0:46:09 > 0:46:12We got a purse snatching in the town square.

0:46:12 > 0:46:13BLEEP.

0:46:13 > 0:46:15Three minutes ago.

0:46:17 > 0:46:20BLEEP, BLEEP, BLEEP. Are you sure? Yeah.

0:46:20 > 0:46:23You know what, I saw a guy with a backpack, I'm telling you.

0:46:23 > 0:46:26I knew the guy was lurking on the way in, cos I did the whole tour.

0:46:26 > 0:46:27I had a feeling, too.

0:46:27 > 0:46:29Hey, Brett, eat.

0:46:29 > 0:46:30Eat!

0:46:30 > 0:46:32Eat. Jess, would you like some more bread? Please.

0:46:42 > 0:46:45In South Africa, it's dinner time.

0:46:45 > 0:46:46Here we go.

0:46:51 > 0:46:52Are you finishing up, girl?

0:46:52 > 0:46:55Yes. Are you ready to speak to Brett?

0:46:55 > 0:46:59Always. Brett has settled the twins during the day

0:46:59 > 0:47:01by following Sister Una's advice,

0:47:01 > 0:47:05but it's now over to sages Elisa and Gwen,

0:47:05 > 0:47:06with seven kids between them,

0:47:06 > 0:47:10for some soothing suggestions for the night shift.

0:47:10 > 0:47:12Thank God I don't have twins.

0:47:13 > 0:47:16Yeah, but the more they grow, you love the experience.

0:47:18 > 0:47:22Hello, Brett. My name is Gwen. I'm in South Africa.

0:47:22 > 0:47:25Hello. I also have twins. They are now ten years.

0:47:25 > 0:47:30In South Africa, when we have babies, sometimes if they are facing

0:47:29 > 0:47:32difficulty in sleeping,

0:47:32 > 0:47:35when you're singing your lullaby, you can take three of your fingers,

0:47:35 > 0:47:37put them on their forehead,

0:47:37 > 0:47:39then they will feel that warmth

0:47:39 > 0:47:42and they will relax, then they will sleep.

0:47:42 > 0:47:46Right, OK. So just three fingers, three fingers on the forehead.

0:47:46 > 0:47:48Yes, exactly that way,

0:47:48 > 0:47:51you just move the fingers slowly and calmly

0:47:51 > 0:47:53as you're singing for them.

0:47:53 > 0:47:56OK. Why don't we sing together this song?

0:47:56 > 0:47:59BRETT CHUCKLES

0:47:59 > 0:48:01OK. OK, say...

0:48:01 > 0:48:05¦ Thula thul, thula bana

0:48:05 > 0:48:09¦ Thula thul, thula bana

0:48:09 > 0:48:11¦ Thula thula

0:48:11 > 0:48:13¦ Thula thula

0:48:13 > 0:48:19¦ Thula thula dana, thula thula... ¦

0:48:19 > 0:48:21You repeat it again and again.

0:48:21 > 0:48:24¦ Thula thula... Thula thula... ¦

0:48:24 > 0:48:26Yes, and then it follows...

0:48:26 > 0:48:28¦ Thula thula. ¦

0:48:28 > 0:48:31Great! Yeah! 100%!

0:48:31 > 0:48:34Thank you. Please keep on trying the song with the twins.

0:48:34 > 0:48:35We'll check with you later

0:48:35 > 0:48:38and see if you're getting up on it, all right.

0:48:38 > 0:48:42I will practise. OK, bye for now.

0:48:42 > 0:48:44I know, I know, I know, I'm here.

0:48:44 > 0:48:47Did you hear Brett singing? Yeah!

0:48:47 > 0:48:49Did you hear that voice?

0:48:49 > 0:48:54I'm telling you, as a woman, I would like to come close to him

0:48:54 > 0:48:57so he can put you under his arm.

0:48:57 > 0:49:00No, no, no. And sing for you every day.

0:49:00 > 0:49:05Brett is for Jess. As he is singing, you go closer, you touch him...

0:49:05 > 0:49:09Women shouldn't come closer. Brett is for Jess and that's all!

0:49:09 > 0:49:11God forgive me. No interruptions.

0:49:13 > 0:49:16I've got this trick.

0:49:16 > 0:49:19Jessie? Mm? ..where you put three fingers on the forehead.

0:49:21 > 0:49:25What? Yeah. What do you mean, three fingers on the forehead?

0:49:25 > 0:49:26Just like that.

0:49:27 > 0:49:29On...? Yes.

0:49:29 > 0:49:31It works, see.

0:49:31 > 0:49:33I'm not convinced.

0:49:35 > 0:49:38Brett will need every trick in the book, as things aren't getting any

0:49:38 > 0:49:42easier. Let's just sit with Daddy for a minute and calm down.

0:49:45 > 0:49:48Over 8,000 miles away in South Africa,

0:49:48 > 0:49:52healer Elisa has volunteered to stay up through the wee small hours.

0:49:52 > 0:49:54How are you doing?

0:49:54 > 0:49:58What is "I'm not fine" in Zulu? You say "Angipilanga."

0:49:59 > 0:50:01Angipilanga.

0:50:03 > 0:50:04It's OK.

0:50:04 > 0:50:08You remember, these people are growing everyday.

0:50:08 > 0:50:09Yeah, you're right.

0:50:09 > 0:50:13Today, he will be quiet. Tomorrow, he won't be quiet,

0:50:13 > 0:50:15so you must get used to that.

0:50:15 > 0:50:19Yeah, you're right. It sounds like it's raining pretty hard there.

0:50:19 > 0:50:21Yes, yes.

0:50:21 > 0:50:23Raining hard.

0:50:25 > 0:50:27Do you want us to sing the lullaby?

0:50:27 > 0:50:30Yeah, come on, let's see if we can't get him to sleep.

0:50:30 > 0:50:34¦ Thula, thula

0:50:36 > 0:50:39¦ Thula, thula

0:50:40 > 0:50:44¦ Thula, thula Thula, thula

0:50:45 > 0:50:47¦ Thula, thula

0:50:47 > 0:50:49¦ Thula, thula

0:50:49 > 0:50:56¦ Thula, bana Thula, thula

0:50:56 > 0:51:00¦ Thula, thula, bana

0:51:00 > 0:51:02¦ Thula, thula... ¦

0:51:02 > 0:51:05THUNDER CRACKS, SHE SINGS

0:51:19 > 0:51:21As the sun comes up across Hertfordshire,

0:51:21 > 0:51:25Brett's managed to feed the babies solo during the night

0:51:25 > 0:51:28and enjoy four uninterrupted hours of sleep

0:51:28 > 0:51:31for the first time since they were born.

0:51:31 > 0:51:32Get you a straw.

0:51:32 > 0:51:35THEY CHUCKLE

0:51:35 > 0:51:38Brett's also followed the advice of his American sages

0:51:38 > 0:51:42and persuaded Jess to go for a walk into town.

0:51:42 > 0:51:44I was talking to the guys from New York yesterday

0:51:44 > 0:51:46and they mentioned that,

0:51:46 > 0:51:49you know, it was good for Jess to get out and do something

0:51:49 > 0:51:53for herself, with me at home looking after the boys.

0:51:53 > 0:51:55I'll see you later.

0:51:55 > 0:51:57OK. See you. Don't worry. Take your time, all right?

0:51:59 > 0:52:00See you in a bit, all right?

0:52:06 > 0:52:09Sh, sh, sh.

0:52:10 > 0:52:15But it's not long before an anxious Jess is checking up on him.

0:52:14 > 0:52:18PHONE RINGS

0:52:18 > 0:52:22Hello, sweetheart. Everything all right? Yeah. Everything OK, though?

0:52:21 > 0:52:24Everything's fine. I mean, you know,

0:52:24 > 0:52:28the...boil-on-aise is cooking nicely and the boys...

0:52:29 > 0:52:32How am I supposed to pronounce it, then? Bolognese!

0:52:32 > 0:52:35CRYING

0:52:37 > 0:52:41As the morning wears on, Brett's relying on all the sages' tips

0:52:41 > 0:52:42he's learned so far.

0:52:43 > 0:52:47I followed the advice from Gwen and Elisa about three fingers on the

0:52:47 > 0:52:49forehead. I am convinced it works.

0:52:50 > 0:52:54Brett's also bowled over by Sister Una's burping trick.

0:52:54 > 0:52:57Una's tip has worked really well.

0:52:57 > 0:53:00That's actually become my, like, go-to tactic now.

0:53:00 > 0:53:03So everything seems to be going pretty well.

0:53:05 > 0:53:09So, you see the father is trying to calm down the twin.

0:53:11 > 0:53:14The other twin is so calm, like your brother and your sister.

0:53:14 > 0:53:18¦ Thula, thula bana

0:53:18 > 0:53:21¦ Thula, thula

0:53:21 > 0:53:25¦ Thula, thula bana

0:53:25 > 0:53:28¦ Thula, thula. ¦

0:53:28 > 0:53:29Hi, Brett!

0:53:31 > 0:53:34You look tired. How are you doing? I'm all right.

0:53:34 > 0:53:36I'm not too bad. I'm so proud of you.

0:53:36 > 0:53:41You sang it even better than I can. Wow. Well done, eh?

0:53:41 > 0:53:42Oh, I don't know about that.

0:53:43 > 0:53:45Yay, the mother is back.

0:53:45 > 0:53:48JESS: Are you OK? Loving life.

0:53:51 > 0:53:53I got you some grandad slippers.

0:53:53 > 0:53:55Are they big enough?

0:53:55 > 0:53:56Course they are.

0:53:56 > 0:53:59If you put them on the right foot! Whoops!

0:54:01 > 0:54:05Brett is extraordinary in the sense that he took on the challenge.

0:54:05 > 0:54:09He's more than a true modern dad. He's a super modern dad.

0:54:09 > 0:54:10He really is.

0:54:13 > 0:54:15Due to the tense pregnancy,

0:54:15 > 0:54:18Brett and Jess never dared to have a baby shower.

0:54:18 > 0:54:21Now that everything seems to be on track,

0:54:21 > 0:54:24it's time to throw the party they always wanted.

0:54:25 > 0:54:27We've got a lot of family and friends coming.

0:54:27 > 0:54:29We do want it to be a special occasion

0:54:29 > 0:54:33and we want it to be a good welcome to the world for the boys.

0:54:33 > 0:54:36I'm going to just put myself out there and show the family that,

0:54:36 > 0:54:40you know, I can handle these two on my own if need be,

0:54:40 > 0:54:42and that we're confident and ready to go forward

0:54:42 > 0:54:44for the rest of their lives, I guess.

0:54:45 > 0:54:49Around the world, the sages are eager to offer up

0:54:49 > 0:54:50their own traditions.

0:54:50 > 0:54:55In Italy, it's beautiful when in a house there's a new baby born.

0:54:55 > 0:55:00In front of the door we put a blue ribbon for boys and pink for girls.

0:55:00 > 0:55:03She might cotton on that that's a little bit out of character for me.

0:55:03 > 0:55:07What are you in England doing on the celebration?

0:55:07 > 0:55:09Do you slaughter anything?

0:55:09 > 0:55:11Probably just bring some presents.

0:55:11 > 0:55:15A mother and father should slaughter the chicken.

0:55:15 > 0:55:18We ask the ancestors to bless the child.

0:55:18 > 0:55:21I'll cook a slaughtered chicken.

0:55:21 > 0:55:22I could do that. How about that?

0:55:22 > 0:55:25Oh, you'll cook the chicken. I'll cook it. Yes.

0:55:29 > 0:55:31It's the morning of the baby shower,

0:55:31 > 0:55:35and whilst Brett has embraced SOME cultural suggestions...

0:55:35 > 0:55:39They are doing like we do in Italy - organise beautiful party.

0:55:39 > 0:55:42..he's left one in particular to Gwen and Elisa.

0:55:45 > 0:55:46No.

0:55:48 > 0:55:50I know you are worried it's not enough.

0:55:54 > 0:55:55Hello. All right?

0:55:59 > 0:56:01Can you grab some balloons? Where's yours?

0:56:01 > 0:56:02Hey!

0:56:03 > 0:56:06Brett's been really good at kind of making sure we both look after

0:56:06 > 0:56:09each other as well as the babies. He's got stuck in.

0:56:11 > 0:56:12He's just got on with it, really.

0:56:12 > 0:56:14He's made it all look quite easy, to be honest.

0:56:14 > 0:56:16I'm a bit peed off.

0:56:17 > 0:56:20They seem to be more relaxed in themselves now,

0:56:19 > 0:56:21the way they're chatting away.

0:56:21 > 0:56:25Because the twins have settled and they're going to live

0:56:24 > 0:56:28happy ever after, be blessed with healthy twins. Yeah.

0:56:35 > 0:56:39ELISA: You did great with the chicken! Yeah, great stuff.

0:56:39 > 0:56:40Yeah, yeah, man.

0:56:42 > 0:56:45I've learnt a huge amount from the sages.

0:56:45 > 0:56:47All the practical stuff, it goes without saying,

0:56:47 > 0:56:50but the fact you've got these people kind of helping you from such

0:56:50 > 0:56:52far-flung places,

0:56:52 > 0:56:55you know, giving so much of their love and attention.

0:56:55 > 0:56:58It really has just made me a better father.

0:56:58 > 0:57:03So I'll be forever indebted to the sages, there's no doubt about it.

0:57:03 > 0:57:06Good job, great job. You know what, this makes you

0:57:06 > 0:57:09a real family guy now. Yeah. Not just a husband.

0:57:09 > 0:57:12You know they really deserve it,

0:57:12 > 0:57:14after such a difficult pregnancy.

0:57:14 > 0:57:16Look, finally, they can enjoy it.

0:57:16 > 0:57:20It's been really, really tough on myself and Jess,

0:57:20 > 0:57:23but we're glad to welcome these two boys into a wonderful family and

0:57:23 > 0:57:25everything you've done for us

0:57:25 > 0:57:27doesn't go unnoticed or unappreciated.

0:57:27 > 0:57:29To everyone that's helped us along the way.

0:57:29 > 0:57:31Absolutely. Whether we know it or not, I suppose.

0:57:31 > 0:57:33Cheers. Cheers.

0:57:33 > 0:57:35To Brett. Ciao, Brett. And Jess.

0:57:37 > 0:57:41I'm ready now to take on the mantle of being Super-Dad,

0:57:41 > 0:57:43the baby whisperer, if you like.

0:57:59 > 0:58:01Coming up next time...

0:58:01 > 0:58:05I'm just really scared of having every single pair of eyes

0:58:05 > 0:58:07s-s-staring at you.

0:58:07 > 0:58:08Wow, that's pretty tough.

0:58:08 > 0:58:12We used to be really happy. I feel quite depressed over it.

0:58:12 > 0:58:15It's like divorced in the house.
