0:00:04 > 0:00:05Jimi said, "We got this gig here"
0:00:05 > 0:00:09and he just said it casually like he did with everything else, you know.
0:00:11 > 0:00:13I had no idea what Woodstock was.
0:00:15 > 0:00:19It was the place to come to, it was not just a rock'n'roll show.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22It was not just about the music.
0:00:22 > 0:00:25It was really about that decade and that culture.
0:00:30 > 0:00:36There was 200,000-300,000 people that had converged on this... pasture.
0:00:36 > 0:00:38I drove through it in a station wagon
0:00:38 > 0:00:42and there was just endless people.
0:00:42 > 0:00:45This was the greatest rock'n'roll concert ever put on.
0:00:45 > 0:00:46MUSIC: "Hey Izabella"
0:00:46 > 0:00:49# Girl, I'm holding you close in my dreams
0:00:49 > 0:00:52# Every night, every night
0:00:52 > 0:00:54# Always sweet darlin'... #
0:00:54 > 0:00:57The Woodstock Festival was being planned and, I guess,
0:00:57 > 0:00:59the guys in charge of the festival figured,
0:00:59 > 0:01:03"Oh, let's get Jimi Hendrix to headline this festival."
0:01:09 > 0:01:14Jimi was important as a cultural icon...
0:01:14 > 0:01:19and, musically, as one of the premier musicians of his day.
0:01:19 > 0:01:22MUSIC: "Purple Haze"
0:01:30 > 0:01:35I though that Jimi would likely be the most exciting act on the show.
0:01:35 > 0:01:40Erm, and...I thought it would be an amazing way to end it.
0:01:40 > 0:01:43Actually, to be perfectly honest with you,
0:01:43 > 0:01:46he was not my first choice for a closing act.
0:01:46 > 0:01:49My first choice was Roy Rogers.
0:01:49 > 0:01:51I tried to book him. I wanted him to end the festival
0:01:51 > 0:01:55with Happy Trails, because we had all grown up with Roy Rogers
0:01:55 > 0:01:57singing Happy Trails when we were little kids, at that time.
0:01:57 > 0:02:00And I thought it would be the perfect way to end it.
0:02:00 > 0:02:03And I was going to have him follow Jimi, but,
0:02:03 > 0:02:06that aside, I thought that that would be the high point, you know,
0:02:06 > 0:02:09certainly of the day and a great way to finish the festival.
0:02:09 > 0:02:12Jimi Hendrix was The Beatle...
0:02:12 > 0:02:14in that year.
0:02:21 > 0:02:26He was on the same level as The Rolling Stones. He was rock royalty.
0:02:28 > 0:02:30You'd have to say they were a large act,
0:02:30 > 0:02:32apart from the festivals
0:02:32 > 0:02:34where they obviously played a major part in festivals.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37They could tour arenas, which...
0:02:37 > 0:02:40there weren't that many acts touring arenas at the time.
0:02:40 > 0:02:42MUSIC: "Crosstown Traffic"
0:02:42 > 0:02:44# You don't mind a little pain
0:02:44 > 0:02:47# You say you just want me to take you for a drive... #
0:02:47 > 0:02:50Our biggest gig was in a place in a place called Devonshire Downs,
0:02:50 > 0:02:53in Los Angeles, in 1969,
0:02:53 > 0:02:56and we played to 100,000 people.
0:02:58 > 0:03:00It's a bit weird.
0:03:00 > 0:03:03MUSIC: "Fire"
0:03:03 > 0:03:05# Stop acting so damn crazy
0:03:05 > 0:03:06# You say your mama ain't home
0:03:06 > 0:03:08# It ain't my concern
0:03:08 > 0:03:09# Just don't play with me
0:03:09 > 0:03:11# And you won't get burned
0:03:11 > 0:03:14# I have only one itching desire
0:03:14 > 0:03:17# Let me stand next to your fire... #
0:03:17 > 0:03:20The one thing you have to know about an act
0:03:20 > 0:03:23is that they have a direction that they're going, musically.
0:03:24 > 0:03:27And when they reach the summit of their life,
0:03:27 > 0:03:32when they are creatively on the top of the mountain,
0:03:32 > 0:03:34they don't know where to go next,
0:03:34 > 0:03:36and start looking around.
0:03:36 > 0:03:39And that's what I think happened to Jimi, at that point.
0:03:49 > 0:03:52The last gig I played at, we were playing in Denver.
0:03:52 > 0:03:55And we were on with Creedence, or something,
0:03:55 > 0:03:58and there were 35,000 people there
0:03:58 > 0:03:59and we were doing our gig...
0:04:00 > 0:04:03and, prior to the gig, someone in the hotel had said...
0:04:03 > 0:04:08had you heard that Jimi had said to the press about extending the band?
0:04:08 > 0:04:10And I said, "Well, he didn't tell me."
0:04:10 > 0:04:14So that went to me head. And then, we played this gig, 35,000 people
0:04:14 > 0:04:17and they all tried to get on stage, which...
0:04:17 > 0:04:19They wouldn't fit, would they?
0:04:19 > 0:04:21And, er...
0:04:21 > 0:04:24then the police started firing tear gas,
0:04:24 > 0:04:26except the wind was coming our way.
0:04:26 > 0:04:29So, basically, we had to get off the stage.
0:04:29 > 0:04:33And then these 35,000 people are trying to chase these three blokes,
0:04:33 > 0:04:37so they put us into this Avis Rent-a-Truck...
0:04:37 > 0:04:39lock the back door...
0:04:39 > 0:04:40there's no lights in it.
0:04:40 > 0:04:43And all these people start crawling all over the truck
0:04:43 > 0:04:46and the roof's buckling and the guy gets in and drives us
0:04:46 > 0:04:49back to the hotel and there's still people on top of the truck.
0:04:49 > 0:04:52And we had to go in the back of the hotel,
0:04:52 > 0:04:54cos we couldn't get in the front, through the kitchens
0:04:54 > 0:04:57or something, and next day I got on a plane. I just said...
0:04:58 > 0:05:00Couldn't handle it any longer.
0:05:08 > 0:05:11Jimi went through many struggles to put a new band together.
0:05:11 > 0:05:14He was looking for a new sound. He was tired of playing
0:05:14 > 0:05:18the same, uh, type of music, uh, that he had played.
0:05:18 > 0:05:22He didn't want to play all the... He had a whole plethora of
0:05:22 > 0:05:24new music that he wanted to present.
0:05:24 > 0:05:26He could see the point of having...
0:05:26 > 0:05:28of expanding...
0:05:28 > 0:05:31..a situation outside of a three-piece band.
0:05:31 > 0:05:37I mean, for heck's sake, there were so many opportunities...
0:05:37 > 0:05:41and I think it was just like... In his mind, he grabbed hold of...
0:05:43 > 0:05:45..what he thought would be comfortable.
0:05:45 > 0:05:50He knew it would take, er, getting away, concentrating
0:05:50 > 0:05:55and getting the right people, er, together, in order to form
0:05:55 > 0:05:59this group that he had a desire of forming.
0:05:59 > 0:06:02When Jimi Hendrix first came back from England, he fell in love
0:06:02 > 0:06:07with Woodstock and he was looking for a place to live and to practise,
0:06:07 > 0:06:08to play music.
0:06:08 > 0:06:13Woodstock had always been known from the early '20s as a hotbed for...
0:06:15 > 0:06:20..artistic endeavours. There were painters and sculptors, writers,
0:06:20 > 0:06:24and then, later on in the '50s and '60s, entertainers who loved
0:06:24 > 0:06:28that peace and tranquillity of Woodstock, as a place to go to,
0:06:28 > 0:06:31to recharge their batteries.
0:06:31 > 0:06:35And, I know, Michael Jeffery had bought a house up there in Woodstock
0:06:35 > 0:06:40and Jimi had a house he'd rented up there, to go and rehearse
0:06:40 > 0:06:44some material, so Woodstock became a place to hang out.
0:06:44 > 0:06:46When I ran into Jimi in Woodstock,
0:06:46 > 0:06:50he said... he invited me to come over and jam.
0:06:50 > 0:06:54He was a prolific jammer, he loved to play with so many different people.
0:06:54 > 0:06:57He said, "Billy, your job is to find Larry Lee. Find him."
0:06:57 > 0:06:58And I found him.
0:06:58 > 0:07:03Billy called me. I guess Jimi
0:07:03 > 0:07:06had my mother's number and Billy called me.
0:07:06 > 0:07:11I remember... I just... I think I had just come back from Vietnam,
0:07:11 > 0:07:12I think I'd been home about...
0:07:14 > 0:07:15..maybe two weeks.
0:07:15 > 0:07:19I don't know if I had just come from the unemployment office.
0:07:19 > 0:07:22And I... phone rang and...
0:07:23 > 0:07:26..it was Billy. I said, "Wow! I ain't heard from that old cat."
0:07:26 > 0:07:28I said, "Billy, what's going on?"
0:07:28 > 0:07:30He said, "Everything fine..."
0:07:30 > 0:07:33I said, "Where are you?" He said, "I'm in New York."
0:07:33 > 0:07:35I said, "What you doing up there?"
0:07:35 > 0:07:37He said, "I'm with Jimi."
0:07:37 > 0:07:38I said, "Wow!"
0:07:40 > 0:07:43Er, I said, "Where is Jimi?" I figured he was going to
0:07:43 > 0:07:46say in England somewhere cos he was hot there at the time...
0:07:46 > 0:07:50He said, "He's sitting right here." And it kind of scared me!
0:07:50 > 0:07:51HE CHUCKLES
0:07:51 > 0:07:52I said, "Yeah...
0:07:53 > 0:07:57"..can I speak with him?" And I spoke to Jimi and he were the same
0:07:57 > 0:07:59Jimi, I didn't know if he would even remember me,
0:07:59 > 0:08:01as much money as I heard he was making, you know.
0:08:01 > 0:08:05And he was the same Jimi, just the same Jimi, no change.
0:08:05 > 0:08:07He said, "Yeah, what you doing?
0:08:07 > 0:08:09"We are going to try a few things up here,
0:08:09 > 0:08:11"we'd like for you to come up here and join us."
0:08:11 > 0:08:16When I first went to Woodstock, to play, before this festival.
0:08:16 > 0:08:21They'd been playing for... together for about... I don't know,
0:08:21 > 0:08:25ten days, maybe, something like that.
0:08:25 > 0:08:29And you've either got that gel and you can work off that conflict.
0:08:29 > 0:08:34It's either there or it's not, you know. And this was just not...
0:08:34 > 0:08:36I know the band that he was putting together,
0:08:36 > 0:08:38cos he was living in Woodstock at that time
0:08:38 > 0:08:40and I knew a lot of the guys in the band
0:08:40 > 0:08:42and I spent some time with Jimi
0:08:42 > 0:08:45and I know that he was trying to figure out which direction to
0:08:45 > 0:08:48take his music and was experimenting with different players.
0:08:48 > 0:08:50And so, we knew this wasn't going to be The Experience,
0:08:50 > 0:08:52but it was going to be Jimi.
0:09:06 > 0:09:09I remember arriving at Woodstock...
0:09:09 > 0:09:11about 5.30, 6 o'clock in the morning,
0:09:11 > 0:09:14sun coming up over this hill and I saw the structure...
0:09:15 > 0:09:19..that was hanging over what was, supposedly, a stage.
0:09:19 > 0:09:21And I'm saying to myself, "Wait a minute,
0:09:21 > 0:09:24"we're going to be recording here in about four or five hours.
0:09:24 > 0:09:26"The stage is still being built."
0:09:26 > 0:09:28There's a crane hanging up over the stage
0:09:28 > 0:09:31and they had these pieces of wood just hanging out there.
0:09:31 > 0:09:34Looked like fingers above the stage.
0:09:34 > 0:09:36This was going to support a canvas top, which was going to
0:09:36 > 0:09:38supposedly protect the people...
0:09:38 > 0:09:39HE CHUCKLES
0:09:39 > 0:09:40..the artists!
0:09:41 > 0:09:45And I'm thinking to myself, "What kind of craziness am I into?"
0:09:54 > 0:09:57We realised early on Friday that the shows were going to go late,
0:09:57 > 0:10:01cos we were having big gaps in our performance schedule.
0:10:01 > 0:10:04We had to wait for the rains to stop,
0:10:04 > 0:10:06we had to wait for the bands to get in.
0:10:06 > 0:10:10Everybody...everything was running late. The roads were obviously...
0:10:10 > 0:10:14there were no roads! The roads were solid masses of people and humanity.
0:10:14 > 0:10:17Er, we started flying people in, but everything was sort of...
0:10:17 > 0:10:19backing up.
0:10:19 > 0:10:21And it continued that way through the weekend,
0:10:21 > 0:10:26so we knew we were into major, major...overlaps in time.
0:10:26 > 0:10:29The band was supposed to go on at 12 o'clock, midnight.
0:10:29 > 0:10:36We arrived there, after a long delay, and that was, er, that was pretty...
0:10:36 > 0:10:40disheartening, cos we just had to camp up in some little shack
0:10:40 > 0:10:42and just wait and wait our time.
0:10:42 > 0:10:44This was like military...
0:10:45 > 0:10:47..warfare.
0:10:47 > 0:10:49I mean, you know, helicopters coming in, dropping people in,
0:10:49 > 0:10:51dropping out.
0:10:51 > 0:10:53We didn't get a chance to get a helicopter,
0:10:53 > 0:10:56it just took for ever to get there.
0:10:57 > 0:11:02I remember we all loaded up in some old station wagons.
0:11:03 > 0:11:07Our whole band and whoever was going was heading for the helipad.
0:11:09 > 0:11:13And we finally got there and the helicopter wasn't running so...
0:11:13 > 0:11:17we had to go on in the station wagon.
0:11:17 > 0:11:22It had rained and, as we pulled up, I saw people laying up
0:11:22 > 0:11:24and I thought they were dead, man, covered with mud and...
0:11:25 > 0:11:29Got naked people, you know, I had never seen that...
0:11:31 > 0:11:34And I figured I'd been gone too long in Vietnam.
0:11:37 > 0:11:42He had just got back from Vietnam, he made a statement about that.
0:11:42 > 0:11:44Jimi thought that was really funny...
0:11:44 > 0:11:46"That girl over there ain't got no clothes on!"
0:11:51 > 0:11:54I think Jimi was originally scheduled to finish Sunday...
0:11:54 > 0:11:59the show on Sunday night but because of the back-up of artists over the
0:11:59 > 0:12:03two or three-day period, there was just no way he was going to
0:12:03 > 0:12:06go on Sunday night and it forced him to go on Monday morning,
0:12:06 > 0:12:10which was really a shame, cos after all the rain and the mud and...
0:12:10 > 0:12:13you know, there's Jimi going on at nine o'clock in the morning.
0:12:13 > 0:12:16Jimi arrived with Michael and, er...
0:12:16 > 0:12:18Jerry Morrison, I think there was
0:12:18 > 0:12:20a bunch of people that had met backstage.
0:12:20 > 0:12:23I had a house for him to stay in and I tried to talk them
0:12:23 > 0:12:25into going on at midnight.
0:12:26 > 0:12:30And I said to Michael, "Listen, I know you're contracted
0:12:30 > 0:12:32"to close the show and you can, if you want to,
0:12:32 > 0:12:34"but I think it's a mistake - the show's running late,
0:12:34 > 0:12:37"the best moment of the night will be at midnight."
0:12:37 > 0:12:42And, for whatever reason, they chose to stay with their principal
0:12:42 > 0:12:45and, er, close the show.
0:12:45 > 0:12:47And in some ways, it was unfortunate,
0:12:47 > 0:12:50in that a lot of the audience didn't get to see his performance.
0:12:50 > 0:12:52MC: Good morning.
0:12:52 > 0:12:54CROWD: Good morning.
0:12:54 > 0:12:56MC: Very shortly, we'll continue.
0:12:58 > 0:13:02Thank you for making all this possible.
0:13:02 > 0:13:06CHEERING AND WHISTLING
0:13:11 > 0:13:14It's been a long one, but it's been delightful.
0:13:14 > 0:13:19As the, the sun rose and we were getting ready to go on,
0:13:19 > 0:13:22all of the people who had been there, even for three days,
0:13:22 > 0:13:26they were revitalised and they also knew that Jimmy was going to
0:13:26 > 0:13:31come and play and the energy level, just everything, the karma...
0:13:31 > 0:13:34er, was all there in spades. It was great.
0:13:34 > 0:13:36We were the last act to go on.
0:13:37 > 0:13:40And we followed Sha Na Na.
0:13:40 > 0:13:45That was my first time seeing or hearing about them, maybe we were...
0:13:45 > 0:13:49But we went on right after they did.
0:13:51 > 0:13:53We were down around the back
0:13:53 > 0:13:56and you couldn't see a lot that was going on out the front,
0:13:56 > 0:13:58so the lift carried you up to the main stage.
0:13:58 > 0:14:00Jimi says, "Look at all those people" and Mitch says,
0:14:00 > 0:14:02"Hell, I'm not going out there."
0:14:02 > 0:14:06So, Mitch had a bottle of Blue Nun wine and when he got through,
0:14:06 > 0:14:11between me, Jimi and Mitch, the wine were down to there so we went out...!
0:14:11 > 0:14:12HE LAUGHS
0:14:16 > 0:14:17AMP FEEDBACK
0:14:20 > 0:14:26I had bought a little scarf that had fringes on it and I folded it,
0:14:26 > 0:14:30so when I tied it round like a headband, it, kind of...
0:14:30 > 0:14:33I thought it was nice, you know. Everybody was doing their own thing.
0:14:33 > 0:14:36I hadn't seen nobody doing that...
0:14:36 > 0:14:41It came down, I thought it looked nice. Nobody cared, anyway...!
0:14:42 > 0:14:46So, I just thought, you know, "Doing my own thing..."
0:14:46 > 0:14:50CHEERING
0:14:50 > 0:14:53So many people. As far as the eye could see, it was nothing but
0:14:53 > 0:14:57a big field of people, so most of us, except for Jimi,
0:14:57 > 0:14:59had not had that particular experience.
0:14:59 > 0:15:03When you see how much power he puts into his show,
0:15:03 > 0:15:06it's so amazing that he was fresh.
0:15:06 > 0:15:10Up, you know, intense, right from the get-go.
0:15:10 > 0:15:12MC: Ladies and gentlemen...
0:15:12 > 0:15:14the Jimi Hendrix Experience...
0:15:14 > 0:15:16CHEERING
0:15:24 > 0:15:27Yeah, there's a lot of girlfriends we like to try to sing about sometimes.
0:15:27 > 0:15:30We're going to sing about this one over there in the section over there,
0:15:30 > 0:15:33the one with the yellow underpants on. Yeah, yeah, you.
0:15:33 > 0:15:36I remember you last night. Hey, baby!
0:15:37 > 0:15:42MUSIC: "Foxy Lady"
0:15:57 > 0:16:00# You know you're a sweet little heartbreaker

0:54:17 > 0:54:20CHEERING
0:54:34 > 0:54:38MC: Ladies and gentlemen, thank you so very much.
0:55:25 > 0:55:30I had been listening to Jimi, of course, since he was recording.
0:55:30 > 0:55:34And, um, Hey Joe, and that era, especially,
0:55:34 > 0:55:37so that was the group that I expected to see on stage
0:55:37 > 0:55:41but I thought that... the expansion of the group,
0:55:41 > 0:55:44the increased ability to have different modes
0:55:44 > 0:55:49of music was just perfect, especially for Woodstock.
0:55:49 > 0:55:54Most artists, from Van Gogh, to Beethoven, to Hendrix,
0:55:54 > 0:55:56they...they have to grow,
0:55:56 > 0:56:00and Jimi was in the growing period of his time and he wanted to grow.
0:56:00 > 0:56:02He felt the need, in order to survive,
0:56:02 > 0:56:04he had to grow musically.
0:56:04 > 0:56:07Now, to the chagrin of the management at that time,
0:56:07 > 0:56:09they didn't want him to change a thing,
0:56:09 > 0:56:12because they had ... they had their formula.
0:56:12 > 0:56:15It's just, like, once you have a formula,
0:56:15 > 0:56:17you don't want to change it, because this is what people -
0:56:17 > 0:56:19it's even true today, in the music world -
0:56:19 > 0:56:21that's what they want you to stick to,
0:56:21 > 0:56:23to what is a sellable item.
0:56:23 > 0:56:27I don't know how much pressure the management put on Jimi,
0:56:27 > 0:56:28to be honest, you know?
0:56:28 > 0:56:30I just know there was a conflict
0:56:30 > 0:56:33and that was the reason I told Jimi I would leave.
0:56:33 > 0:56:37I was seeing that he was fighting a battle that,
0:56:37 > 0:56:39maybe, if I was gone,
0:56:39 > 0:56:41he would be more like... what they wanted.
0:56:41 > 0:56:44They wanted three pieces, as far as I could gather.
0:56:44 > 0:56:48There was a money-maker, there was the hit,
0:56:48 > 0:56:50I had to experience it.
0:56:50 > 0:56:52So I just told him, "I'm just going to leave."
0:56:52 > 0:56:54He said, "Well, we'll get a drummer and we'll get together."
0:56:54 > 0:56:57I just came on back to Memphis.
0:56:57 > 0:57:01I was hoping that would take some of the heat off Jimi, you know.
0:57:05 > 0:57:09He had so established an identity with the public...
0:57:11 > 0:57:14..that they wanted to see him they way they saw him
0:57:14 > 0:57:17and when he didn't want them to see him that way any more,
0:57:17 > 0:57:19they weren't ready for the transition.
0:57:19 > 0:57:21Let's put it this way.
0:57:21 > 0:57:26It was much easier after that - a relief, shall we say -
0:57:26 > 0:57:28just to play with Jimi and Billy Cox.
0:57:34 > 0:57:36I think, all in all, it went well.
0:57:36 > 0:57:39Everyone did exceptionally well.
0:57:39 > 0:57:41I was proud of that group and I was proud to be a part
0:57:41 > 0:57:44of that Hendrix band, at that particular time.
0:57:44 > 0:57:45I really wanted him under the lights
0:57:45 > 0:57:48and I wanted it to be that really special moment
0:57:48 > 0:57:53and the high point of the show for me and for the audience
0:57:53 > 0:57:57and...then he did Star-Spangled Banner
0:57:57 > 0:57:59and all that changed.
0:57:59 > 0:58:01That was all of it - combined.
