0:00:57 > 0:01:00If you listen to the records, they had a lot of raw power in them.

0:01:02 > 0:01:06Every song had its hook, that piece that we could all hang on to

0:01:06 > 0:01:08and sing collectively.

0:01:15 > 0:01:21It was such a boom that if you had a big hit like Glad All Over

0:01:21 > 0:01:25or I Want To Hold Your Hand, you sold millions of records.

0:01:25 > 0:01:26# I'm in pieces

0:01:26 > 0:01:28# Bits and pieces

0:01:28 > 0:01:31# Since you left me and you said goodbye... #

0:01:31 > 0:01:34They were hot. They were hot. They really were.

0:01:34 > 0:01:38Well, they were gorgeous and they were great songs.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41And, you know, we were teenage girls.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44# Give me, give me

0:01:44 > 0:01:49# A chance to be near you

0:01:49 > 0:01:52# Because, because

0:01:52 > 0:01:55# I love you. #

0:02:10 > 0:02:13# Catch us if you can

0:02:13 > 0:02:15# Catch us if you can. #

0:02:15 > 0:02:18My sister used to run his fan club from our home.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20I said, "Run the Dave Clark Fan Club? Pfft!"

0:02:20 > 0:02:22- Let me ask the first question. - Yes, go on.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25What was the first drum kit that you ever had? Now, come on.

0:02:25 > 0:02:30The first good one I got was a German kit called a Trixon.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33- A Trixon? Yes, I know a Trixon. - Wonderful. It was all red glitter.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35There you are. Did you know that?

0:02:35 > 0:02:37I wanted to be a member of Dave Clark Five.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39It made drumming look sexy, you know.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44# Having a wild weekend

0:02:44 > 0:02:46# We're having a wild weekend

0:02:46 > 0:02:48# Reelin' and a-rockin'

0:02:48 > 0:02:51# Rockin' and a-rollin'. #

0:02:51 > 0:02:53There are certain songs you hear

0:02:53 > 0:02:57and then it stamps a time and place in our lives forever.

0:02:57 > 0:03:01# I said over and over and over again

0:03:01 > 0:03:04# This dance is gonna be a drag

0:03:04 > 0:03:08# I said over and over and over again

0:03:08 > 0:03:10# This dance is gonna be a drag. #

0:03:10 > 0:03:13The thing that people have kind of missed

0:03:13 > 0:03:15in reference to the Dave Clark Five is those were

0:03:15 > 0:03:18big, powerful, nasty-sounding records, man.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21Bigger, much bigger sound than, say, the Stones or the Beatles.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23- Or the Beatles. - Much bigger sound.

0:03:23 > 0:03:24# Any way you want it

0:03:24 > 0:03:27# You can always hear me say

0:03:27 > 0:03:29# Hey, hey, hey

0:03:29 > 0:03:30- # It's all right - It's all right

0:03:30 > 0:03:32- # It's all right - It's all right

0:03:32 > 0:03:34- # It's all right - It's all right

0:03:34 > 0:03:36- # It's all right - It's all right

0:03:36 > 0:03:37# Any way you want it... #

0:03:37 > 0:03:39It was huge, you know.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42I mean, we were kids from Liverpool, they were kids from London.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45So that amount of success was fantastic.

0:03:45 > 0:03:49It's what we were aiming for and we were lucky enough to get it.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52The three giants that came out of Britain in the '60s

0:03:52 > 0:03:55were the Beatles, the Dave Clark Five and the Rolling Stones.

0:03:55 > 0:03:56# Come on

0:03:56 > 0:03:58# Come on, let me show you where it's at

0:03:58 > 0:03:59# Come on

0:03:59 > 0:04:02# Come on, let me show you where it's at

0:04:02 > 0:04:03# Oh, I want to show you

0:04:03 > 0:04:05# Come on, let me show you where it's at

0:04:05 > 0:04:08# The name of the place is I Like It Like That... #

0:04:08 > 0:04:12Went across to America and nailed it. So huge.

0:04:12 > 0:04:13It connected with me.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16It was sort of modern electric church

0:04:16 > 0:04:19and I just wanted to yell, "Hallelujah."

0:04:19 > 0:04:21# Hallelujah

0:04:21 > 0:04:23# Hallelujah

0:04:23 > 0:04:25# Hallelujah, hallelujah

0:04:25 > 0:04:27# Hallelujah. #

0:04:28 > 0:04:31Our music depicted how I felt in the '60s.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33It was fun, optimistic, great.

0:04:33 > 0:04:37CROWD CHANTS: We love Dave! We love Dave!

0:04:48 > 0:04:51The Mecca of music lovers tonight is the Royal, Tottenham,

0:04:51 > 0:04:53home of Mecca dancing.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55And the big-news attraction, the Dave Clark Five,

0:04:55 > 0:04:58back, you might say, at their own home. And what a return.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01You had a residency at the Tottenham Royal

0:05:01 > 0:05:04and, you know, you play it four or five times a week.

0:05:04 > 0:05:05When they were ready,

0:05:05 > 0:05:08when they broke, they did many more shows than the Beatles ever did.

0:05:08 > 0:05:10They were much more of a live band than the Beatles were.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12They had already played their dues

0:05:12 > 0:05:16before the Royal, Tottenham, going around the Army bases

0:05:16 > 0:05:20and, you know, all piling into a van and driving around the country.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22# Stuck in

0:05:22 > 0:05:26# Ah, just a little bit longer

0:05:26 > 0:05:28# A little bit longer. #

0:05:28 > 0:05:32The DC5 first started playing at American bases

0:05:32 > 0:05:35and military bases in the UK and used to...

0:05:35 > 0:05:38I mean, that's where we got our grounding because we used to

0:05:38 > 0:05:42have to play three or four hours a night, and during the intermission

0:05:42 > 0:05:46they'd put the jukebox on and they'd play these fantastic records.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48That was the first time I heard Do You Love Me

0:05:48 > 0:05:51by the Contours, and I said, "Oh, I love that."

0:05:51 > 0:05:54I used to say to the Base Commander, "Could I have copies of them?"

0:05:54 > 0:05:57Do You Love Me, You Got What It Takes,

0:05:57 > 0:05:58I Like It Like That, Over And Over...

0:05:58 > 0:06:02I picked all these songs up from the US bases in the UK

0:06:02 > 0:06:06and used to play them as a part of our repertoire in our act,

0:06:06 > 0:06:08long before we ever made records.

0:06:08 > 0:06:12We never used to play what everybody else used to play.

0:06:12 > 0:06:14We used to do different stuff.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16By the time they got to the Royal, Tottenham,

0:06:16 > 0:06:19they were confident and knew how to put on a great show.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22The music was something you only saw

0:06:22 > 0:06:26on films from America, and we had it in north London.

0:06:26 > 0:06:27It was exciting, for a start.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30I mean, there was a buzz before you got in the place.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33Everybody waiting for them to come on to do their bit

0:06:33 > 0:06:37and then the whole place jumped. It was just very exciting.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39You wondered if you was going to go through the floor

0:06:39 > 0:06:42and it was fantastic, and everybody was in time.

0:06:42 > 0:06:456,000 people stamping, it was like soldiers going over a bridge.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49And it rocked, and the management tried to stop us doing it.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52We nearly destroyed the Royal, Tottenham.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55# And that's the way it'll always be

0:06:59 > 0:07:00# I'm in pieces

0:07:00 > 0:07:01# Bits and pieces

0:07:01 > 0:07:05# You said you loved me and you'd always be mine

0:07:05 > 0:07:06# I'm in pieces

0:07:06 > 0:07:08# Bits and pieces

0:07:08 > 0:07:11# We'll be together till the end of time... #

0:07:11 > 0:07:15There was about 500 people there on a Saturday night

0:07:15 > 0:07:19and it was licensed for about 1,500,

0:07:19 > 0:07:23and after about two months, they were cramming 6,000 in there.

0:07:23 > 0:07:27I mean, they were putting up crash bars, everything, it was unheard of.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29# I'm in pieces

0:07:29 > 0:07:30# Bits and pieces

0:07:30 > 0:07:34# You said you loved me and you'd always be mine... #

0:07:34 > 0:07:35You used to get crushed at the front

0:07:35 > 0:07:38and they had to send us offstage.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41But it was fun, it was great fun,

0:07:41 > 0:07:43but that was the beginning of the mania.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46# Now you're saying it was just a game... #

0:07:46 > 0:07:48And they were so vibrant, you know.

0:07:48 > 0:07:54I'd never seen a live group that were so obviously destined for fame.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59It was just a great night, a great night.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02Couldn't wait, it was like going on holiday every week.

0:08:02 > 0:08:06Dave Clark Five band live was out of this world.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09# You said you loved me, never make me blue

0:08:12 > 0:08:14# I'm in pieces

0:08:14 > 0:08:16# Bits and pieces... #

0:08:16 > 0:08:19Everybody was there for the music, everybody mixed together.

0:08:19 > 0:08:23It doesn't matter whether they were the Kray gangsters or the Tottenham

0:08:23 > 0:08:27Hotspur football team, everybody was on the floor having a good time.

0:08:29 > 0:08:33It became our place. You hear a lot about the Beatles had the Cavern.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35Well, the Dave Clark Five had the Tottenham Royal,

0:08:35 > 0:08:37that was theirs, and that was ours.

0:08:39 > 0:08:41It was north London's finest.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50For three years, I'd been doing film extra work.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53I appeared in over 40 films, but if you sneezed you'd miss me.

0:08:55 > 0:08:56I was appearing with Elizabeth Taylor

0:08:56 > 0:08:58and Richard Burton in The VIPs

0:08:58 > 0:09:03and with Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther film A Shot In The Dark.

0:09:03 > 0:09:04I was in Becket,

0:09:04 > 0:09:09I was fifth soldier from the right, but it was great for me.

0:09:09 > 0:09:10I was interested in film and it gave me

0:09:10 > 0:09:13a chance to see great directors at work.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18OK, boys, let's have another go, we'll get it this time.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20# You know I can do the blues

0:09:20 > 0:09:22# Do the blues

0:09:22 > 0:09:23# And I can do the twist... #

0:09:23 > 0:09:27I studied karate and martial arts from eight years of age

0:09:27 > 0:09:31and I got a great job. It was crashing a car and it wasn't,

0:09:31 > 0:09:33again, heroic, it was, you know...

0:09:33 > 0:09:35You were strapped in and with roll bars

0:09:35 > 0:09:38and things and it was very choreographed.

0:09:38 > 0:09:40But the great thing is it was a night call, so it ran

0:09:40 > 0:09:44for three nights and I got £300, which was a lot of money in those

0:09:44 > 0:09:48days, and that enabled me to go and spend it and make the first record.

0:09:55 > 0:10:00So when I made the first record and I took it in to EMI

0:10:00 > 0:10:03and I found out what independent producers got

0:10:03 > 0:10:06and I thought, "I'll ask four times what they ask,

0:10:06 > 0:10:10"and then with a bit of luck I might get whatever everybody else gets."

0:10:10 > 0:10:14And to my amazement they agreed and they paid me four times the amount,

0:10:14 > 0:10:16and I was very, very, very lucky.

0:10:16 > 0:10:20And the records came back to me after three years,

0:10:20 > 0:10:23so I owned the masters and the rest was history.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26Making records was a bonus. I mean, I couldn't believe it.

0:10:26 > 0:10:29"Wow," you know, "all my heroes make records."

0:10:29 > 0:10:33The ironic thing was I was paid £5 a day as a film extra

0:10:33 > 0:10:38to sit in the audience at the London Palladium on a film called I Could

0:10:38 > 0:10:42Go On Singing with the amazing Judy Garland and Dirk Bogarde.

0:10:43 > 0:10:48A year later, in February '64, I was actually topping the bill

0:10:48 > 0:10:52on Sunday Night At The London Palladium, and this

0:10:52 > 0:10:57was in the days when there were 20, 25 million people who watched it.

0:10:57 > 0:10:59There was always one big show a week.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01Over here it was Sunday Night At The London Palladium,

0:11:01 > 0:11:04that if you got on that, everyone watched you.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07# I'm feeling glad all over

0:11:07 > 0:11:11# Yes, I'm glad all over

0:11:11 > 0:11:14# Baby, I'm glad all over

0:11:14 > 0:11:17# So glad you're mine... #

0:11:17 > 0:11:19Glad All Over came on the scene

0:11:19 > 0:11:21and it was a really good record, it was an obvious hit.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24The band looked great, so you had to hand it to them,

0:11:24 > 0:11:25you know, reluctantly.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27Congratulations, Dave, on toppling the Beatles from

0:11:27 > 0:11:30the number one spot on the hit parade. How do you feel today?

0:11:30 > 0:11:32Well, as the record says, glad all over.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35# I'm feeling glad all over

0:11:35 > 0:11:39# Yes, I'm glad all over... #

0:11:39 > 0:11:41What is this Tottenham Sound that has swept you to the top?

0:11:41 > 0:11:45It's something we created through doing a lot of one-night stands.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47I think what happened was the newspapers

0:11:47 > 0:11:51started to say, "Oh, the Tottenham Sound," because we were,

0:11:51 > 0:11:55you know, called the Mersey Sound, the Mersey Beat,

0:11:55 > 0:11:57so I think it was a good story for the newspapers.

0:11:57 > 0:12:01And there was an enormous debate of is it

0:12:01 > 0:12:04the Beatles or the Dave Clark Five, you know?

0:12:04 > 0:12:06And there were magazines that came out,

0:12:06 > 0:12:08"Beatles versus Dave Clark Five".

0:12:08 > 0:12:10# Can't you see that she's mine?

0:12:10 > 0:12:13# We've been together for a long, long time

0:12:13 > 0:12:16# And it will stay that way... #

0:12:16 > 0:12:18It was always a big competition in schools

0:12:18 > 0:12:22about the fight about the Beatles and the Dave Clark Five and who the

0:12:22 > 0:12:27girls liked, and you'd have names carved in your desks and things.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29And I actually liked them both.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32I mean... But, you know, there'd be like a war on at school

0:12:32 > 0:12:34and, you know, "You have to like the Beatles,"

0:12:34 > 0:12:37"You have to like the Dave Clark Five." It was like...

0:12:37 > 0:12:41I didn't understand why there had to be a fight.

0:12:41 > 0:12:42I didn't get it.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45Why did you have to like one more than the other?

0:12:45 > 0:12:46Why couldn't you like everybody?

0:12:46 > 0:12:48So then you became particularly aware then

0:12:48 > 0:12:53because this was... They were being made out to be our rivals.

0:12:53 > 0:12:54I don't think you'd say we'd be rivals

0:12:54 > 0:12:58because we've got a completely different line-up to the Beatles.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01We've got an organ and a sax, you've got a completely different sound.

0:13:01 > 0:13:02So from that point of view,

0:13:02 > 0:13:06we weren't really worried because they were different.

0:13:14 > 0:13:18# Don't you know I love her so

0:13:18 > 0:13:20# And I'll never, never let her go

0:13:20 > 0:13:23# No matter what the people may say

0:13:23 > 0:13:24# Or try to do

0:13:25 > 0:13:28# Can't you see that she's mine?

0:13:28 > 0:13:32# We've been together for a long, long time

0:13:32 > 0:13:33# And it'll stay that way

0:13:33 > 0:13:35# Because I know she loves me too. #

0:13:35 > 0:13:37Dave's stuff had balls.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40I mean, it was balls to the wall.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43Dave Clark Five had the girls screaming, going insane.

0:13:51 > 0:13:53# Well, do you love me?

0:13:53 > 0:13:54# I can really move

0:13:54 > 0:13:56# Well, do you love me?

0:13:56 > 0:13:58# I'm in the groove

0:13:58 > 0:13:59# Well, do you love me?

0:13:59 > 0:14:02# Do you love me?

0:14:02 > 0:14:08# Now that I can dance?

0:14:10 > 0:14:12# Watch me now, oh

0:14:12 > 0:14:13# Work it all

0:14:13 > 0:14:15# I said work it all, baby

0:14:15 > 0:14:16# Work it all

0:14:16 > 0:14:18# Oh, you're driving me crazy

0:14:18 > 0:14:20# Work it all

0:14:20 > 0:14:22# With a little bit of soul now... #

0:14:25 > 0:14:28Went across to America and nailed it, so huge,

0:14:28 > 0:14:33so huge, and had one hit single after another.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36There was this tsunami of pop culture and it started,

0:14:36 > 0:14:39I suppose, with the Beatles.

0:14:39 > 0:14:42And very quickly by something called the Tottenham Sound,

0:14:42 > 0:14:48these guys that banged away at the drums like, you know, like...

0:14:48 > 0:14:51I don't know - wild men from Borneo.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54..who provide the sound you need so you can stomp your feet,

0:14:54 > 0:14:56the song you need so you can rock your head

0:14:56 > 0:15:00and the music you need so you can roll your soul in abandon.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03And why? Why do you need this music so?

0:15:04 > 0:15:08Because on a specific day, a definitive moment

0:15:08 > 0:15:13in the history of the world, in November of 1963,

0:15:13 > 0:15:16a terrible storm pounded your classroom

0:15:16 > 0:15:18and your town and your country.

0:15:18 > 0:15:20Down this avenue of sadness

0:15:20 > 0:15:23they bring President John F Kennedy, marked hero,

0:15:23 > 0:15:26to lie in state under the Great Dome of the Capitol.

0:15:26 > 0:15:28I mean, I remember, we were backstage

0:15:28 > 0:15:32somewhere and the news came through and we were all, like, horrified,

0:15:32 > 0:15:36like as if he was our president, because he was a ray of hope.

0:15:36 > 0:15:42He was a new, young, charismatic president who we all looked up to.

0:15:42 > 0:15:45And for weeks and for months, for the longest time,

0:15:45 > 0:15:48your heart and your world have been wrapped in black and the head

0:15:48 > 0:15:53of every single person you look up to is still bowed in mourning.

0:15:53 > 0:15:57It was the bleakest winter of your discontent.

0:15:57 > 0:16:01But then mourning became morning

0:16:01 > 0:16:04as the sun rose in the east,

0:16:04 > 0:16:07coming out of England.

0:16:07 > 0:16:09# I'm feeling... #

0:16:09 > 0:16:12You want to hear a song that will make you feel

0:16:12 > 0:16:15Glad All Over, by the Dave Clark Five.

0:16:15 > 0:16:17# Glad all over

0:16:17 > 0:16:21# Yes, I'm glad all over

0:16:21 > 0:16:24# Baby, I'm glad all over

0:16:24 > 0:16:28# So glad you're mine... #

0:16:28 > 0:16:31I wanted to be a member of Dave Clark Five.

0:16:31 > 0:16:34I remember being at the school dance, right?

0:16:34 > 0:16:37Glad All Over came on and every time they went, "And I'm feeling..."

0:16:37 > 0:16:42Boom boom! It sent chills up my spine.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45# I'm feeling glad all over

0:16:45 > 0:16:48# Yes, I'm glad all over... #

0:16:48 > 0:16:53Once it's in your mind, you remember it forever.

0:16:53 > 0:16:55It makes you "glad all over".

0:16:55 > 0:16:58Glad All Over came on, which was their first hit in the States.

0:16:58 > 0:17:02It sounded like it was ripping out of the radio.

0:17:02 > 0:17:07It's fantastic. Dave Clark mania hits America,

0:17:07 > 0:17:09and what a great piece of history.

0:17:13 > 0:17:19As a kid, it was a gift from another country

0:17:19 > 0:17:22that was actually meant for me.

0:17:23 > 0:17:26# And I'm feeling glad all over

0:17:26 > 0:17:30# Yes, I'm glad all over

0:17:30 > 0:17:34# Baby, I'm glad all over... #

0:17:34 > 0:17:37And I gave my job up on a Friday. Dave said, "Give your job up

0:17:37 > 0:17:39"on Friday because we're going to America."

0:17:39 > 0:17:42You've got to remember, I'd never been out the country before,

0:17:42 > 0:17:44and then on Saturday we get on a plane -

0:17:44 > 0:17:47I'd never been on an aeroplane before - flew to America,

0:17:47 > 0:17:50and then on Sunday I played in front of 70 million people.

0:17:50 > 0:17:52And I'd never stayed in a hotel before,

0:17:52 > 0:17:54I'd never seen a limousine before.

0:17:54 > 0:17:58And the size of the buildings were so immense.

0:17:58 > 0:18:00How do you feel about being in the United States?

0:18:00 > 0:18:01We're thrilled to bits.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04We've always wanted to come to the States, it's a big opportunity.

0:18:04 > 0:18:06Ed Sullivan invited us onto his show.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08There was no bigger stage for presentation

0:18:08 > 0:18:10in the States at that time.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13If you were on The Ed Sullivan Show, you were huge.

0:18:13 > 0:18:15Ed Sullivan was it.

0:18:15 > 0:18:19Four guys for three weeks in a row in February.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21Then in March,

0:18:21 > 0:18:25the Dave Clark Five for two weeks in a row,

0:18:25 > 0:18:29and then some other UK band, and then the Dave Clark Five again.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31Then another UK band and then the Dave Clark Five again,

0:18:31 > 0:18:34another UK band, the Dave Clark Five again...

0:18:34 > 0:18:37They did The Ed Sullivan Show more times than any other British act.

0:18:37 > 0:18:40- I think they did it 18 times. - We were being invaded.

0:18:50 > 0:18:51# I'm in pieces

0:18:51 > 0:18:53# Bits and pieces... #

0:18:53 > 0:18:56This three-minute record is taking our joylessness

0:18:56 > 0:18:59and smashing it to pieces -

0:18:59 > 0:19:02to Bits And Pieces, so turn up the radio, Dad.

0:19:03 > 0:19:05# I'm in pieces

0:19:05 > 0:19:06# Bits and pieces

0:19:06 > 0:19:10# You went away and left me misery

0:19:10 > 0:19:11# I'm in pieces

0:19:11 > 0:19:13# Bits and pieces

0:19:13 > 0:19:16# And that's the way it'll always be... #

0:19:18 > 0:19:22And our shores were spontaneously welcoming these Brits,

0:19:22 > 0:19:26like centuries before when the English brought enlightenment to

0:19:26 > 0:19:29the Dark Ages with not just Shakespeare, but with Ben Jonson

0:19:29 > 0:19:31and Thomas Kyd and Christopher Marlowe,

0:19:31 > 0:19:34the pantheon of literary sensation.

0:19:34 > 0:19:38This was a pop reprise of our mother country's gift to humanity.

0:19:38 > 0:19:42They forgave us our revolution by starting up another,

0:19:42 > 0:19:45the red coats replaced by lads in matching suits

0:19:45 > 0:19:48and armed with guitars and drums and an organ and a sax.

0:19:48 > 0:19:52The result was more than just audiences filled with

0:19:52 > 0:19:56screaming teenagers and school yard arguments over who was better,

0:19:56 > 0:19:59this quintet or that quartet from the northern part

0:19:59 > 0:20:01of the Queen's Isle. No, the true product...

0:20:03 > 0:20:08The true product was joy, unparalleled,

0:20:08 > 0:20:12unstoppable, undeniable joy, the joy to be alive, the joy to be young!

0:20:12 > 0:20:14MUSIC: We'll Meet Again by Vera Lynn

0:20:14 > 0:20:16'This is Dave Clark.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18'This is Mike Smith.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21'This is Denis Payton.

0:20:22 > 0:20:25'This is Rick Huxley.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28'This is Lenny, Lenny Davidson.'

0:20:28 > 0:20:31# But I know we'll meet again

0:20:31 > 0:20:35# Some sunny day... #

0:20:37 > 0:20:40DAVE CLARK: The wartime was very sad for our family,

0:20:40 > 0:20:44like many other families, because my mum lost three of her brothers.

0:20:46 > 0:20:50But what amazed me, my dad said it was the happiest time for him,

0:20:50 > 0:20:54because in England, you had a class system,

0:20:54 > 0:20:57you had the upper class, the middle class and the working class,

0:20:57 > 0:21:01and in those days the working class weren't treated very well,

0:21:01 > 0:21:03it was very Dickensian in a way,

0:21:03 > 0:21:09but during the war, everybody got together as one.

0:21:09 > 0:21:11Everybody was helping one another.

0:21:12 > 0:21:17- MIKE SMITH:- There was a lot of bombed-out areas in London.

0:21:17 > 0:21:21It was still very poor here, compared to America.

0:21:21 > 0:21:25DAVE CLARK: It takes something like that tragedy to bring

0:21:25 > 0:21:28everybody together, which is very sad, but there's something about it.

0:21:28 > 0:21:30That's what gave England

0:21:30 > 0:21:36and the British people that sort of will to want to improve your life.

0:21:40 > 0:21:45MUSIC: Glad All Over

0:21:57 > 0:22:02# You say that you love me all of the time

0:22:03 > 0:22:05# You say that you need me... #

0:22:05 > 0:22:09DAVE CLARK: We played on bomb sites, I remember that.

0:22:09 > 0:22:11And my childhood was wonderful.

0:22:11 > 0:22:13We didn't have any money,

0:22:13 > 0:22:18and looking back, I mean, we were always...the family were

0:22:18 > 0:22:20broke by the middle of the week, but we never went without,

0:22:20 > 0:22:25whether it was second-hand clothes or whatever, we never went without.

0:22:25 > 0:22:29We had a lot of love in the family, which... I feel very blessed.

0:22:30 > 0:22:33# Glad all over, baby

0:22:33 > 0:22:37# Glad all over, so glad you're mine... #

0:22:37 > 0:22:41MUSIC: Good Old Rock'n'Roll

0:22:48 > 0:22:51# When I was just a little boy

0:22:51 > 0:22:54# You know my one and only joy

0:22:54 > 0:22:59# Was listening to that good old rock'n'roll

0:23:00 > 0:23:02# Now I'm just turned 23

0:23:02 > 0:23:05# And if you want to get a message to me

0:23:05 > 0:23:10# All you gotta do is play that good old rock'n'roll... #

0:23:10 > 0:23:13- MIKE SMITH:- I had the radio on, I heard this guy from America,

0:23:13 > 0:23:16and he went... # Well, since my baby left me... #

0:23:16 > 0:23:20I thought, what is that? Wow, I love that!

0:23:20 > 0:23:22DAVE CLARK: Elvis changed everything.

0:23:22 > 0:23:24When that came on the radio, it was, "Wow!"

0:23:24 > 0:23:28And Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard.

0:23:28 > 0:23:31It was American music and very, very rock'n'roll.

0:23:33 > 0:23:36- INTERVIEWER:- Dave, you've been together as a band for four years.

0:23:36 > 0:23:37Where did you meet the other boys?

0:23:37 > 0:23:40In the gymnasium in Tottenham.

0:23:40 > 0:23:43We all trained there every Monday night, that's where we met.

0:23:43 > 0:23:46Well, I myself personally, I do unarmed combat and karate,

0:23:46 > 0:23:49but it's just general physical training the boys do,

0:23:49 > 0:23:52football, boxing, the lot, we do everything there just to keep fit.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55# Her wall is filled with pictures

0:23:55 > 0:23:58# She'd get 'em one by one

0:23:58 > 0:24:01# Yeah, she'd get so excited

0:24:01 > 0:24:03# Oh, won't you look at her run?

0:24:05 > 0:24:08# I'm gonna tell Aunt Mary about Uncle John

0:24:08 > 0:24:12# He says he's got the blues, but I know he's having fun... #

0:24:12 > 0:24:15DAVE CLARK: It's not because it's the Dave Clark Five,

0:24:15 > 0:24:19it's because it's Mike, Denis, Rick and Lenny,

0:24:19 > 0:24:23and people go for either one of the boys or for the five.

0:24:23 > 0:24:28And I think the success is because they work so well as a team.

0:24:28 > 0:24:32And, you know, the boys have been great, and I think I owe

0:24:32 > 0:24:36my success and we owe all of our success to one another.

0:24:38 > 0:24:41# To the end of time... #

0:24:41 > 0:24:45I'll always look on Tottenham as my home.

0:24:45 > 0:24:46I was born there,

0:24:46 > 0:24:50and only until about eight months ago, I moved from Tottenham.

0:24:50 > 0:24:53You know, we lived in a flat on top of a grocer's shop.

0:24:54 > 0:24:57But I loved it, you know, because it was my home.

0:24:58 > 0:25:02# Cos I'll always be true

0:25:02 > 0:25:06# And I'm feeling glad all over... #

0:25:06 > 0:25:09You know, I'm a Cockney and I'm proud of it,

0:25:09 > 0:25:13and the people around me are just ordinary, working-class people.

0:25:13 > 0:25:15Never be ashamed of where you live.

0:25:15 > 0:25:18I was born in Tottenham. This is my home, I'm proud of it.

0:25:18 > 0:25:20# Glad all over... #

0:25:20 > 0:25:23- PRESENTER:- Dave Clark's allegiance to his working-class background

0:25:23 > 0:25:27becomes more tenuous with every high-heeled boot step that he takes.

0:25:27 > 0:25:31At 23, he's already rich enough to stop working altogether,

0:25:31 > 0:25:34but he's still aiming himself at the centre, the centre

0:25:34 > 0:25:37of profitable attention in an arena that grows constantly bigger.

0:25:37 > 0:25:40The first loud applause that he ever heard

0:25:40 > 0:25:43came from the Tottenham Hotspur's football ground, close to his home.

0:25:57 > 0:25:59# I'm feeling glad all over

0:25:59 > 0:26:02# Yes, I'm glad all over... #

0:26:02 > 0:26:06- PRESENTER:- It was Dave's enthusiasm for football that first took him into the pop business.

0:26:06 > 0:26:09He was in a youth club team that had the chance of playing

0:26:09 > 0:26:13a match in Holland if they could raise enough money for their fares.

0:26:14 > 0:26:16So, he formed a skiffle group

0:26:16 > 0:26:19and raised £200 by playing at local dances.

0:26:19 > 0:26:22His team went to Holland, won their match, and the skiffle group,

0:26:22 > 0:26:24with some jet streamlining and professional polish,

0:26:24 > 0:26:26has been raising money ever since.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29- CROWD SINGING: - # Glad all over

0:26:29 > 0:26:33# Feeling glad all over... #

0:26:33 > 0:26:36DAVE CLARK: Everyone dreams of winning the football pools

0:26:36 > 0:26:40and you know, deep down inside, you'll never win the pools.

0:26:40 > 0:26:43But this is LIKE winning the football pools.

0:26:43 > 0:26:45- CROWD SINGING: - # Glad all over

0:26:45 > 0:26:48# So glad you're mine. #

0:26:51 > 0:26:54- ED SULLIVAN:- Lenny Davidson, Denis Payton, Rick Huxley,

0:26:54 > 0:26:57Mike Smith and Dave Clark -

0:26:57 > 0:26:59the Dave Clark Five.

0:26:59 > 0:27:01Dave Clark Five.

0:27:01 > 0:27:03The Dave Clark Five.

0:27:03 > 0:27:05The Dave Clark Five.

0:27:05 > 0:27:07The Dave Clark Five.

0:27:08 > 0:27:10The Dave Clark Five.

0:27:10 > 0:27:13# Cos can't you see that she's mine?

0:27:13 > 0:27:16# We've been together for a long, long time

0:27:16 > 0:27:20# And it'll stay that way because I know she loves me too... #

0:27:21 > 0:27:25You had the eyes and ears of America, from the kids

0:27:25 > 0:27:28to their families, because everybody watched it at the same time.

0:27:28 > 0:27:32Nothing was as big as that for at least a decade.

0:27:32 > 0:27:35The DC5 were on there 18 times.

0:27:35 > 0:27:38I mean, this was as if God had anointed you -

0:27:38 > 0:27:41it's OK, America will now accept you.

0:27:41 > 0:27:44# ..to pull us apart

0:27:44 > 0:27:47# But we don't care what they say

0:27:47 > 0:27:50# We're gonna keep on lovin' this way

0:27:50 > 0:27:55# But if they break us up, you know it'll only break my heart. #

0:28:01 > 0:28:06They found a way to encompass the R&B sound,

0:28:06 > 0:28:08which was saxophone, actually.

0:28:08 > 0:28:10And this is where we start to get

0:28:10 > 0:28:13the interesting parallels, I think, with our band.

0:28:13 > 0:28:18They were unique in that, very simply, because of the saxophone.

0:28:18 > 0:28:21That's right! I wondered if you were going to say that.

0:28:21 > 0:28:24I mean, like, the Dave Clark Five, they had the saxophone,

0:28:24 > 0:28:26they had the saxophone.

0:28:26 > 0:28:28# Any way you want it

0:28:28 > 0:28:32# You can always hear me say, hey, hey, hey

0:28:32 > 0:28:33# It's all right, it's all right

0:28:33 > 0:28:35# It's all right, it's all right

0:28:35 > 0:28:37# It's all right, it's all right

0:28:37 > 0:28:39# It's all right, it's all right

0:28:39 > 0:28:41# Any way you want it

0:28:41 > 0:28:45# That's the way it will be

0:28:45 > 0:28:49# Any way, any way you want it

0:28:49 > 0:28:52# That's all right by me

0:28:52 > 0:28:55# Any way, any way you want it

0:28:55 > 0:28:59# That's the way it will be

0:29:01 > 0:29:02# Any way you want it

0:29:02 > 0:29:05# You can call me any day... #

0:29:05 > 0:29:07That was probably the toughest thing,

0:29:07 > 0:29:09was in the '60s when the groups all started coming.

0:29:09 > 0:29:11The Beatles came in, you know, Dave Clark Five.

0:29:11 > 0:29:14They were all coming in on the scene,

0:29:14 > 0:29:17and Elvis was having a really tough time, he felt out of the loop.

0:29:17 > 0:29:19He was still involved with all his movies,

0:29:19 > 0:29:22and he wasn't really recording and putting anything out there.

0:29:22 > 0:29:25We arrived at JFK,

0:29:25 > 0:29:27all these limousines and things,

0:29:27 > 0:29:31and never seen a car that big, they were monstrous!

0:29:31 > 0:29:34And there's 20,000 kids, you think, "What the hell is going on here?"

0:29:34 > 0:29:37And then you realise they've all got banners, with your name on.

0:31:14 > 0:31:17had gone through the same phase with Frank Sinatra.

0:31:17 > 0:31:20We'll be right back after these words.

0:32:17 > 0:32:18I couldn't believe it.

0:38:46 > 0:38:50# Hey, yeah, oh! #

0:38:50 > 0:38:52CHEERING

0:38:52 > 0:38:58Mike was an amazing voice, he was the most underrated rock'n'roll singer,

0:38:58 > 0:39:00and he underrated himself.

0:39:00 > 0:39:02He didn't realise how good he was.

0:39:02 > 0:39:04Maybe that's what was the magic.

0:39:09 > 0:39:11# Well, do you love me?

0:39:11 > 0:39:13# I can really move

0:39:13 > 0:39:14# Well, do you love me?

0:39:14 > 0:39:16# I'm in the groove

0:39:16 > 0:39:18# Well, do you love me?

0:39:18 > 0:39:19# Do you love me?

0:39:19 > 0:39:28# Now that I can dance?

0:39:28 > 0:39:30# Watch me now, oh!

0:39:30 > 0:39:31# Work it all

0:39:31 > 0:39:32# I said work it all, baby

0:39:32 > 0:39:34# Work it all

0:39:34 > 0:39:36# Oh, you're driving me crazy

0:39:36 > 0:39:37# Work it all

0:39:37 > 0:39:39# With a little bit of soul now... #

0:39:40 > 0:39:45The DC5 connected to me because there was a sound I wanted.

0:39:45 > 0:39:49If I was going to be in a rock band I wanted to sound like that,

0:39:49 > 0:39:50I wanted to look like that.

0:39:50 > 0:39:54There was a real connection between American music and the DC5.

0:39:54 > 0:39:57They were one of the all-time great singers.

0:39:57 > 0:40:01And Mike's Smith's voice, oh, one of the greatest rock'n'roll singers.

0:40:01 > 0:40:04You listen to him on I Like It Like That.

0:40:04 > 0:40:05# Come on! #

0:40:05 > 0:40:06# Come on

0:40:06 > 0:40:08# Come on, let me show you where it's at

0:40:08 > 0:40:09# Come on

0:40:09 > 0:40:11# Come on, let me show you where it's at

0:40:11 > 0:40:13# Come on

0:40:13 > 0:40:15# Come on, let me show you where it's at... #

0:40:15 > 0:40:16And the name of the place...

0:40:16 > 0:40:18# ..is I Like It Like That

0:40:18 > 0:40:19# Come on

0:40:19 > 0:40:21# Come on, let me show you where it's at

0:40:21 > 0:40:22# Oh, come on

0:40:22 > 0:40:24# Come on, let me show you where it's at

0:40:24 > 0:40:26# Oh, I wanna show you

0:40:26 > 0:40:28# Let me show you where it's at

0:40:28 > 0:40:30# The name of the place... #

0:40:30 > 0:40:31..is I Like It Like That.

0:40:31 > 0:40:32# Come on

0:40:32 > 0:40:34# Come on, let me show you where it's at

0:40:34 > 0:40:35# Oh, come on

0:40:35 > 0:40:37# Come on, let me show you where it's at... #

0:40:37 > 0:40:42He had that thing that set them, just tweaked them.

0:40:42 > 0:40:46They were different and that's why they stood out.

0:40:46 > 0:40:49# You don't drive a big fast car

0:40:49 > 0:40:53# No, you don't look like a movie star

0:40:53 > 0:40:57# And on your money we won't get far

0:40:57 > 0:41:00# But, baby

0:41:00 > 0:41:02# You got what it takes

0:41:02 > 0:41:05# Ow, to satisfy... #

0:41:05 > 0:41:08You're a blue-eyed soul. You're just a soul, dude,

0:41:08 > 0:41:11but then you're a British guy, and OK, that's cool.

0:41:11 > 0:41:14There was one voice in the DC5 and Mike Smith had it.

0:41:14 > 0:41:21Mike Smith is really an unsung voice, unsung hero vocally,

0:41:21 > 0:41:24and not a lot of people point to him,

0:41:24 > 0:41:26but that's one of the great voices of rock'n'roll.

0:41:26 > 0:41:28He has the sweet quality, but he also had

0:41:28 > 0:41:30that raucous rock'n'roll quality.

0:41:30 > 0:41:33He was a great keyboard player as well, and he was gorgeous.

0:41:33 > 0:41:35# Ow, to satisfy

0:41:35 > 0:41:39# You got what it takes to set my soul on fire

0:41:39 > 0:41:43# But oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah

0:41:43 > 0:41:46# You got what it takes for me... #

0:41:46 > 0:41:49You Got What It Takes really is something that makes me think about

0:41:49 > 0:41:54wow, you know, I can almost see him performing it live.

0:41:54 > 0:41:59And so that kind of thing was, to me, really, really cool. As a...

0:41:59 > 0:42:04rhythm track, it kind of almost had...in-between, I'd say,

0:42:04 > 0:42:09the Otis Redding, um... Can't Help Myself kind of feel.

0:42:09 > 0:42:11# ..in the best of taste

0:42:11 > 0:42:14# And nature didn't give you such a beautiful face

0:42:14 > 0:42:18# But, baby

0:42:18 > 0:42:20# You got what it takes

0:42:20 > 0:42:22# Ow, to satisfy

0:42:22 > 0:42:26# You got what it takes to set my soul on fire

0:42:26 > 0:42:30# But oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah

0:42:30 > 0:42:33# You got what it takes for me... #

0:42:33 > 0:42:35It's one thing being a drummer in a band,

0:42:35 > 0:42:38it's another thing shaking the rafters

0:42:38 > 0:42:40and grabbing the public by the scruff of their neck

0:42:40 > 0:42:43and say, "Look at me, don't look at Mike Smith". That's balls.

0:42:43 > 0:42:47It just immediately became a much more aggressive...

0:42:47 > 0:42:50It felt like much more of a live band in the studio.

0:42:50 > 0:42:54# And nature didn't give you such a beautiful face

0:42:54 > 0:42:57# But, baby

0:42:57 > 0:42:59# You got what it takes

0:42:59 > 0:43:01# Yeah, yeah, yeah... #

0:43:01 > 0:43:03It's well known I was influenced by the Beatles,

0:43:03 > 0:43:06but I was also influenced with Dave Clark

0:43:06 > 0:43:08with the heaviness of the drums.

0:43:12 > 0:43:14He made drumming look sexy, you know.

0:43:14 > 0:43:18Dave Clark on drums, blasting with so much power,

0:43:18 > 0:43:22any longer and you'd stomp your hands and clap your feet.

0:43:22 > 0:43:24You could always tell Dave Clark's drumming

0:43:24 > 0:43:27by his signature snare drum sound.

0:43:27 > 0:43:29The build on the tom and the snare drum

0:43:29 > 0:43:31was something Dave would do, you know...

0:43:31 > 0:43:33da-da-da-da-da, pom-pom-pom-pom.

0:43:33 > 0:43:36And that's how I learned how to play the drums.

0:43:39 > 0:43:41# Well, do you love me?

0:43:41 > 0:43:42# I can really move

0:43:42 > 0:43:44# Well, do you love me?

0:43:44 > 0:43:45# I'm in the groove... #

0:43:45 > 0:43:50The Dave Clark Five are one of the few British bands of the day

0:43:50 > 0:43:53that never replaced their drummer.

0:43:53 > 0:43:54The band was led by a drummer.

0:43:54 > 0:43:57There's not that many of those out there, you know.

0:43:57 > 0:44:00And arrangements that were built around the drums.

0:44:00 > 0:44:04You match that with a guy that knew what to do with that.

0:44:04 > 0:44:06I don't know what Dave did, but the production,

0:44:06 > 0:44:11as Steve can tell you, was unmatched still in many ways, you know.

0:44:11 > 0:44:13One of the most powerful records ever made.

0:44:13 > 0:44:15On a nightly basis, if I played 20, 25 songs

0:44:15 > 0:44:20with Bruce and the E Street Band, I would say in at least 20 or 25 songs

0:44:20 > 0:44:24you will hear a lot of Dave Clark rolls, as we refer to them.

0:44:24 > 0:44:26And little things, builds on the tom-toms, you know.

0:44:26 > 0:44:29# Tell me

0:44:29 > 0:44:31# Tell me

0:44:31 > 0:44:33# Well, do you love me?

0:44:33 > 0:44:34# I can really move

0:44:34 > 0:44:36# Well, do you love me?

0:44:36 > 0:44:38# I'm in the groove

0:44:38 > 0:44:39# Well, do you love me?

0:44:39 > 0:44:41# Do you love me...? #

0:44:41 > 0:44:44STEVIE WONDER: I always think about, when I think of Dave Clark Five,

0:44:44 > 0:44:46you know, is the fun of it all.

0:44:46 > 0:44:50It's like, you know, a love song, you know,

0:44:50 > 0:44:51it's a serious thing, a love song,

0:44:51 > 0:44:54but, you know, how about the joy of love,

0:44:54 > 0:44:57and that's kind of what I, you know, I got as well as...

0:44:57 > 0:44:59Even with that song Do You Love Me?,

0:44:59 > 0:45:02the dance, the fun of it all. To me it's cool.

0:45:02 > 0:45:03..one of the greatest,

0:45:03 > 0:45:07and you're going to hear them right now, England's Dave Clark Five.

0:45:07 > 0:45:09SCREAMING

0:45:09 > 0:45:14# Everybody knows you've been treating me bad

0:45:16 > 0:45:21# Everybody knows you've been makin' me sad

0:45:21 > 0:45:25# Well, you don't have to lie cos I'm no fool

0:45:25 > 0:45:29# I can see you don't want my love at all

0:45:29 > 0:45:33# I know, I still love you

0:45:33 > 0:45:38# Everybody knows he's been hanging around

0:45:41 > 0:45:47# Everybody knows you've been painting the town

0:45:47 > 0:45:51# He could never love you the way that I do

0:45:51 > 0:45:54# And maybe I'll find somebody else

0:45:54 > 0:45:59# But oh, I still love you... #

0:45:59 > 0:46:02There was a lot of dreaming about the Dave Clark Five and,

0:46:02 > 0:46:05as I say, Dave and Mike, and yeah,

0:46:05 > 0:46:08I suppose it's the first time you actually thought about

0:46:08 > 0:46:12things like that, things that you weren't supposed to think about.

0:46:12 > 0:46:14# I'll be yours, my love

0:46:14 > 0:46:16# I'll be yours

0:46:16 > 0:46:21# We'll stay together forever

0:46:21 > 0:46:24# I'll be yours, my love... #

0:46:24 > 0:46:26And we all had crushes on them, of course,

0:46:26 > 0:46:27especially the drummer.

0:46:27 > 0:46:30I used to love that drummer with his white teeth

0:46:30 > 0:46:32and big eyes and floppy fringe.

0:46:32 > 0:46:34God, we all had a crush on him.

0:46:34 > 0:46:38But you never mentioned the word "sex" or "sexy",

0:46:38 > 0:46:40I mean, I'm a Catholic girl, for God's sake.

0:46:41 > 0:46:44I had a band picture of obviously the whole group,

0:46:44 > 0:46:47but I did have pictures of Dave on his own

0:46:47 > 0:46:49right opposite my bed,

0:46:49 > 0:46:53and right next to my Margot Fonteyn and my ballet pictures.

0:46:53 > 0:46:55# The little things you do

0:46:55 > 0:46:58# Things you do

0:46:58 > 0:47:00# That mean so very much to me... #

0:47:00 > 0:47:02I had this great poster,

0:47:02 > 0:47:04and for some reason I thought he could see me

0:47:04 > 0:47:08through the poster, that he would know that I was a huge fan.

0:47:08 > 0:47:12# ..would mean nothing without me

0:47:12 > 0:47:17- # Now I know that you mean, oh, oh - That you mean

0:47:17 > 0:47:21- # Every word you say - Word you say

0:47:21 > 0:47:25# I will love you

0:47:25 > 0:47:27# Oh, oh, forever... #

0:47:27 > 0:47:32One of my first jobs ever was to do this piece of filming

0:47:32 > 0:47:36as kind of... I think I was one of the dolly birds of London,

0:47:36 > 0:47:38and...

0:47:38 > 0:47:42for a special with Lucille Ball and Dave Clark Five.

0:47:42 > 0:47:46And I was so nervous because, again, it's that weird thing,

0:47:46 > 0:47:51you know, a year before I'd been one of the little teenybopper girls,

0:47:51 > 0:47:54you know, loving this band

0:47:54 > 0:47:58and then suddenly you've got to meet them

0:47:58 > 0:48:00and behave like a normal human being.

0:48:00 > 0:48:04Dave Clark, would you consider yourself a trendsetter in mod clothing?

0:48:04 > 0:48:06Well, it's very hard to say really.

0:48:06 > 0:48:08I think anybody that's in the public eye

0:48:08 > 0:48:11I suppose people take notice of, but whether you set trends or not,

0:48:11 > 0:48:14well, that's up to the people to answer themselves, you know.

0:48:14 > 0:48:16With the Dave Clark Five and their look was, you know,

0:48:16 > 0:48:18they were really cool-looking.

0:48:18 > 0:48:19# I know they're wrong

0:48:19 > 0:48:26# Cos there are no regrets for us... #

0:48:28 > 0:48:30I loved the way they dressed.

0:48:30 > 0:48:36The French sort of shirts and boots.

0:48:36 > 0:48:41It was sharp, really sharp.

0:48:41 > 0:48:43I thought that was important, you know,

0:48:43 > 0:48:46presentation, visual presentation.

0:48:46 > 0:48:50Everybody in those days wore suits and shirts and ties,

0:48:50 > 0:48:54the Beatles, the Stones the first few years, you know.

0:48:54 > 0:48:57And I thought, you know, "We look the same as everybody else,"

0:48:57 > 0:49:00so I thought, "We've got to change the whole look".

0:49:00 > 0:49:05So I was on holiday in Spain, I saw this white shirt,

0:49:05 > 0:49:08it was a one-off in a boutique, and I bought it,

0:49:08 > 0:49:12and it was white, like a doctor's collar,

0:49:12 > 0:49:14and it had buttons down the side,

0:49:14 > 0:49:16and I got them copied for the group.

0:49:16 > 0:49:19Something about the collars that I remember in the band

0:49:19 > 0:49:22somehow in my head. I see an album cover.

0:49:22 > 0:49:26And I'm menopausal, so I could be dreaming,

0:49:26 > 0:49:30but the collars were much higher, like really,

0:49:30 > 0:49:31and the cuffs,

0:49:31 > 0:49:33I mean, they just looked good.

0:49:33 > 0:49:34Yeah.

0:49:34 > 0:49:36I mean, sex was a big part of it,

0:49:36 > 0:49:39and the look of the Dave Clark Five,

0:49:39 > 0:49:42yeah, they all shaved, didn't they?

0:49:42 > 0:49:45They clearly shampooed, or somebody shampooed for them.

0:49:45 > 0:49:47No, they were very clean-cut,

0:49:47 > 0:49:50they were very clean-cut, kind of like the Beatles.

0:49:50 > 0:49:52If you look at the photos of the period

0:49:52 > 0:49:55suddenly everyone looked... we've all got a look,

0:49:55 > 0:49:58and we're all young 20s,

0:49:58 > 0:50:01and we've all got shirts and gear

0:50:01 > 0:50:02and buttoned-down collars and the suits,

0:50:02 > 0:50:05we're all checking out each other's fashions, "All right, mate?"

0:50:05 > 0:50:09We're all smoking, you know, Peter Stuyvesants or Rothmans.

0:50:09 > 0:50:11We thought we were so cool,

0:50:11 > 0:50:13and we were.

0:50:13 > 0:50:16SCREAMING

0:50:22 > 0:50:28# It's right that I should care about you

0:50:28 > 0:50:36# And try to make you happy when you're blue

0:50:38 > 0:50:45# It's right, it's right to feel the way I do

0:50:45 > 0:50:51# Because, because I love you... #

0:50:54 > 0:50:57You can take any DC Five song, including Because,

0:50:57 > 0:51:01one of my favourites was the rising chord pattern,

0:51:01 > 0:51:03and take a look at that lyric -

0:51:03 > 0:51:07"Because, because I love you", but the name of the song is not I Love You, it's Because.

0:51:07 > 0:51:09It's the coolness of it. It's the understatement.

0:51:09 > 0:51:15# Give me one kiss and I'll be happy

0:51:17 > 0:51:24# Just, just to be with you

0:51:24 > 0:51:28# Give me, give me

0:51:28 > 0:51:32# A chance to be near you

0:51:32 > 0:51:39# Because, because I love you... #

0:51:46 > 0:51:50STEVIE WONDER'S PLAYING CONTINUES

0:51:56 > 0:51:58I began to play some of the stuff but, you know,

0:51:58 > 0:52:02the things I really enjoyed or the kinds of songs I enjoyed doing

0:52:02 > 0:52:07and writing were songs that really you begin to hear later on.

0:52:07 > 0:52:10You could hear those influences of, say,

0:52:10 > 0:52:14whether it be something that I may have heard from Dave Clark Five

0:52:14 > 0:52:18or, you know, the Beatles or Otis Redding.

0:52:18 > 0:52:20They came up with those songs, you know.

0:52:20 > 0:52:23- They just had great, great... - And Mike and Dave deserve to be

0:52:23 > 0:52:28that sort of famous songwriting duo just like, you know...

0:52:28 > 0:52:29Just great stuff, man.

0:52:29 > 0:52:31I think like Lennon/McCartney or Jagger/Richards.

0:52:31 > 0:52:34- Yeah.- I mean, obviously, they were that good.

0:52:34 > 0:52:37# As I write my letter today

0:52:39 > 0:52:43# Tears start falling from my eyes

0:52:43 > 0:52:47# I remember things we used to say

0:52:47 > 0:52:52# And the ties that bind our love

0:52:54 > 0:52:57# Only one thing I want to do

0:52:57 > 0:53:01- # Come home - Whoa, yeah

0:53:01 > 0:53:03# Come home

0:53:03 > 0:53:06# Long as I know

0:53:06 > 0:53:08# I'm coming home to you... #

0:53:08 > 0:53:11The melodies were great, the songs seemed to be

0:53:11 > 0:53:14almost autobiographical, seemed to be about...

0:53:14 > 0:53:16The songs seemed to be about a lifestyle,

0:53:16 > 0:53:19singing about what you believed in, how you felt,

0:53:19 > 0:53:23what you wanted to do, your aspirations, your dreams.

0:53:23 > 0:53:25# Of the things

0:53:25 > 0:53:27# Of the fun

0:53:27 > 0:53:30# While we were one... #

0:53:30 > 0:53:33Well, my drumming hero was Buddy Rich,

0:53:33 > 0:53:37but he's a jazz drummer, and one of my biggest thrills

0:53:37 > 0:53:40was Buddy came to see one of our shows,

0:53:40 > 0:53:42which blew me away,

0:53:42 > 0:53:44and also embarrassed me in a way.

0:53:44 > 0:53:47I said... I told him he was my hero, and I said,

0:53:47 > 0:53:54"Buddy, I couldn't drum one tenth or one hundredth as good as you."

0:53:54 > 0:53:56He said, "Don't knock it, Dave,"

0:53:56 > 0:53:58he said, "What you are doing is great for us drummers."

0:53:58 > 0:54:01He said, "I couldn't sell millions of records

0:54:01 > 0:54:04"and I couldn't pack out 30 or 40,000 people,"

0:54:04 > 0:54:06so he said, "Don't knock it."

0:54:06 > 0:54:09And that was the best compliment I could have.

0:54:10 > 0:54:12# Oh, we're havin' a wild weekend

0:54:12 > 0:54:14# We're havin' a wild weekend

0:54:14 > 0:54:16# Reelin' and a-rockin'

0:54:16 > 0:54:20# Rockin' and a-rollin'... #

0:54:24 > 0:54:28Well, the concert that I saw the Dave Clark Five

0:54:28 > 0:54:32perform live it was just

0:54:32 > 0:54:37a life-changing experience for me. I couldn't get over

0:54:37 > 0:54:41the fullness of the sound. It sounded great.

0:54:41 > 0:54:43Of course they played, you know, several hits.

0:54:43 > 0:54:48They played so well, he sounded so great on the drums,

0:54:48 > 0:54:51I just never heard a sound like that, and I was sitting

0:54:51 > 0:54:54close enough to be able to actually, you know, hear every note.

0:54:54 > 0:54:57HE PLAYS A DRUM SOLO

0:55:25 > 0:55:29Are you all right, Dave? You'll have to move in to the mic more.

0:55:29 > 0:55:33All right, roll them, take three. Dave Clark Five Wild Weekend.

0:55:33 > 0:55:36A-one, two, three, four!

0:55:39 > 0:55:42# Saturday night, everybody havin' fun

0:55:44 > 0:55:47# You don't know it but I'm havin' me some

0:55:49 > 0:55:52# You left me at home, thought I would die

0:55:53 > 0:55:56# Down and lonely, thought I would cry

0:55:57 > 0:55:59# Oh, havin' a wild weekend

0:55:59 > 0:56:02# We're havin' a wild weekend

0:56:02 > 0:56:04# Reelin' and a-rockin'

0:56:04 > 0:56:06# Rockin' and a-rollin'... #

0:56:06 > 0:56:10The actual sound of the band was the band,

0:56:10 > 0:56:13and when you go and see them live they sounded like that.

0:56:13 > 0:56:14I mean, you know, it was like,

0:56:14 > 0:56:18wow, there are a lot of parallels to our band, you know,

0:56:18 > 0:56:23in that sense of having the performance band cooking, you know,

0:56:23 > 0:56:26before...maybe even before they were recording.

0:56:26 > 0:56:28# Havin' a wild weekend

0:56:28 > 0:56:30# We're havin' a wild weekend

0:56:30 > 0:56:32# Reelin' and a-rockin'

0:56:32 > 0:56:35# Rockin' and a-rollin'...

0:56:48 > 0:56:51# Reelin' and a-rockin'

0:56:51 > 0:56:53# Rockin' and a-rollin'

0:56:53 > 0:56:55# Whoo! Reelin' and a-rockin'

0:56:55 > 0:56:58# Rockin' and a-rollin' Rockin' and a-rollin'

0:56:58 > 0:57:00# Reelin' and a-rockin'

0:57:00 > 0:57:03# Rockin' and a-rollin' Oh! #

0:57:03 > 0:57:05These guys must have killed people in clubs!

0:57:05 > 0:57:09Pounding out in 4/4 time the message that to be joyful

0:57:09 > 0:57:14is to be alive, and joy was in the music of the Dave Clark Five.

0:57:19 > 0:57:23# Tell me, do you want my love?

0:57:25 > 0:57:28# Tell me what you're thinking of

0:57:30 > 0:57:33# I've been waiting round so long

0:57:35 > 0:57:37# You don't try too hard

0:57:37 > 0:57:40# You don't try too hard

0:57:46 > 0:57:50# I hope you're not trying to make a fool of me

0:57:52 > 0:57:56# Cos if you are I know there's going to be

0:57:56 > 0:58:00# Some tears falling and they won't be mine

0:58:01 > 0:58:03# You don't try too hard

0:58:03 > 0:58:06# You don't try too hard... #

0:58:06 > 0:58:09All the initial hits, they had enormous impact

0:58:09 > 0:58:12when they first hit in the States.

0:58:12 > 0:58:15Yeah, the Dave Clark Five were everywhere in that period

0:58:15 > 0:58:18from around '64 to '66.

0:58:18 > 0:58:19You know, I looked it up,

0:58:19 > 0:58:23they scored 15 consecutive Top 20 hits on the US charts.

0:58:23 > 0:58:26That's more than any other band in the world, except the Beatles.

0:58:28 > 0:58:30Being in America at that time,

0:58:30 > 0:58:33I mean, you couldn't turn on the TV without Dave Clark Five.

0:58:33 > 0:58:37Now, ladies and gentlemen, the talented and beautiful Miss Dionne Warwick.

0:58:37 > 0:58:40Hosting Hullabaloo was a major accomplishment.

0:58:40 > 0:58:42It was a fun show to do.

0:58:42 > 0:58:46It was all about recording artists and records,

0:58:46 > 0:58:50and to have someone from England host it

0:58:50 > 0:58:53had to be a double accomplishment.

0:58:53 > 0:58:56The song was written by Burt Bacharach...

0:58:56 > 0:58:58And Hal David. I thank you!

0:58:58 > 0:59:01We'll be back later in the show to sing more of their hits,

0:59:01 > 0:59:03so, in the meantime, a word from our sponsor.

0:59:05 > 0:59:09# Give me one kiss and I'll be happy... #

0:59:09 > 0:59:12It was unbelievable to meet and work with some of my

0:59:12 > 0:59:17American heroes, like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Lucille Ball.

0:59:19 > 0:59:22Lucy was a huge favourite in our house,

0:59:22 > 0:59:25and my mum and dad couldn't believe it when I said that we were

0:59:25 > 0:59:29filming a show with her - Lucy In London with the Dave Clark Five.

0:59:29 > 0:59:32# Because, because I love you. #

0:59:32 > 0:59:36A couple of years ago in England a bill collector met a draughtsman.

0:59:36 > 0:59:39Now, the two of them met a couple of factory workers

0:59:39 > 0:59:41and they all met a bartender!

0:59:41 > 0:59:43LAUGHTER

0:59:43 > 0:59:46Between the group they could hardly afford a haircut,

0:59:46 > 0:59:49so they became the Dave Clark Five.

0:59:49 > 0:59:51Now they're such a success with their rock'n'roll record,

0:59:51 > 0:59:53they don't NEED a haircut.

0:59:53 > 0:59:56Here they are, the Dave Clark Five!

0:59:56 > 1:00:00APPLAUSE

1:00:00 > 1:00:03# Here they come again, mmm

1:00:03 > 1:00:06# Catch us if you can, mmm

1:00:06 > 1:00:09# Time to get a move on, mmm

1:00:09 > 1:00:12# We will yell with all of our might

1:00:12 > 1:00:15# Catch us if you can

1:00:15 > 1:00:18# Catch us if you can

1:00:18 > 1:00:20# Catch us if you can. #

1:00:20 > 1:00:23Who can tell what the future holds?

1:00:23 > 1:00:24Speaking of your future

1:00:24 > 1:00:28and your excursion into films, now you're no stranger to films.

1:00:28 > 1:00:29Well, I've been an extra,

1:00:29 > 1:00:32which is equivalent to a tea boy in a television studio.

1:00:32 > 1:00:35- And you've learnt a great deal about it.- I learnt a lot, yes.

1:00:35 > 1:00:38Now what about the acting and how do you see yourself as an actor?

1:00:38 > 1:00:39It was always my ambition to be an actor,

1:00:39 > 1:00:42but after seeing that first film it's quite frightening,

1:00:42 > 1:00:45because then you realise you've got a lot to learn.

1:00:45 > 1:00:47I'd like to go into films, and so would the boys.

1:00:47 > 1:00:50I don't think there's any doubt of how big they were.

1:00:50 > 1:00:53Doing a Hollywood movie must have been extraordinary.

1:00:53 > 1:00:54I mean, let's face it, you know,

1:00:54 > 1:00:56it's pretty cool to be asked to do a movie.

1:00:56 > 1:00:59# Now we gotta run, mmm

1:00:59 > 1:01:03# No more time for fun, mmm

1:01:03 > 1:01:05# When we're getting angry, mmm

1:01:05 > 1:01:08# We will yell with all of our might

1:01:08 > 1:01:11# Catch us if you can

1:01:11 > 1:01:15# Catch us if you can

1:01:15 > 1:01:18# Catch us if you can

1:01:18 > 1:01:20# Catch us if you can. #

1:01:20 > 1:01:24- You do look a bit like her. Doesn't he, Steve?- What?

1:01:24 > 1:01:29- He looks a bit like Dinah.- Yeah, he does, but he's far lovelier.

1:01:29 > 1:01:32- Don't you think so, Steve? - I think what?

1:01:32 > 1:01:33Thinks he looks a bit like your girl.

1:01:33 > 1:01:36Look. How many times have I told you? She's not my girl.

1:01:36 > 1:01:39Don't touch me. I've got a contagious rash.

1:01:39 > 1:01:42And you may think the band made two feature films,

1:01:42 > 1:01:45but it was only one, titled Catch Us If You Can in the UK,

1:01:45 > 1:01:48but called Having A Wild Weekend in the United States,

1:01:48 > 1:01:52a brilliant marketing decision, you must admit.

1:01:56 > 1:01:59By the time Catch Us If You Can became

1:01:59 > 1:02:04Having A Wild Weekend, the DC5 were entrenched in the American psyche.

1:02:04 > 1:02:06It's been excitingly photographed

1:02:06 > 1:02:09and the story itself is a mirror of youth kicking over the traces,

1:02:09 > 1:02:12refusing to be bound by the traditions of the past.

1:02:12 > 1:02:15The film looked at alternative lifestyles

1:02:15 > 1:02:17and tried to put across a message.

1:02:17 > 1:02:20In the film, Dave and the boys head for the West Country

1:02:20 > 1:02:22and fall in with some hippies.

1:02:22 > 1:02:25Director John Boorman used genuine hippies, believing their

1:02:25 > 1:02:28attitudes and outlook to be unusual and interesting.

1:02:33 > 1:02:37- Got any spliffs, man? - "Spliffs"?- Pot.- No.

1:02:38 > 1:02:42- Got any H? Horse.- No.

1:02:42 > 1:02:44King normal.

1:02:44 > 1:02:45Richard Lester.

1:02:45 > 1:02:49The nice thing of that film is that there was a genuine filmmaker...

1:02:49 > 1:02:55working to learn his craft and to develop his craft.

1:02:55 > 1:02:58John Boorman, your first feature film in 1965 was

1:02:58 > 1:03:01Catch Us If You Can with the Dave Clark Five.

1:03:01 > 1:03:04It was very successful, wasn't it?

1:03:04 > 1:03:06Pauline Kael took to it

1:03:06 > 1:03:09and wrote a rave review about it in the New Yorker

1:03:09 > 1:03:14and that sort of gave me some kind of, you know, reputation in America,

1:03:14 > 1:03:18which really, I suppose, led on to my next film, Point Blank.

1:03:18 > 1:03:20Because that starred Lee Marvin,

1:03:20 > 1:03:23and, what, he read about the Dave Clark Five and sent for you?

1:03:39 > 1:03:42# Here they come again, mmm

1:03:42 > 1:03:45# Catch us if you can, mmm

1:03:45 > 1:03:49# Time to get a move on, mmm

1:03:49 > 1:03:51# We will yell with all of our might

1:03:51 > 1:03:55# Catch us if you can

1:03:55 > 1:03:58# Catch us if you can

1:03:58 > 1:04:01# Catch us if you can

1:04:01 > 1:04:03# Catch us if you can. #

1:04:03 > 1:04:07Dave Clark, the pop star with the Midas touch.

1:04:07 > 1:04:09Every song had its hook,

1:04:09 > 1:04:13that piece that we could all hang on to and sing collectively,

1:04:13 > 1:04:16no matter where you were.

1:04:16 > 1:04:20You could be in Japan, you could be in Botswana, it didn't matter.

1:04:22 > 1:04:24You could hear that song

1:04:24 > 1:04:29and you'll hear every person in their broken English

1:04:29 > 1:04:32singing the same song together.

1:04:33 > 1:04:35# Think of your fellow man

1:04:35 > 1:04:38# Lend him a helping hand

1:04:38 > 1:04:40# Put a little love in your heart

1:04:42 > 1:04:44# You see it's getting late

1:04:44 > 1:04:46# Oh, please, don't hesitate

1:04:46 > 1:04:49# Put a little love in your heart

1:04:49 > 1:04:50# And the world

1:04:50 > 1:04:52# The world

1:04:52 > 1:04:53# Will be a better place

1:04:53 > 1:04:55# And the world

1:04:55 > 1:04:56# The world

1:04:56 > 1:04:58# Will be a better place

1:04:58 > 1:04:59# For you

1:04:59 > 1:05:00# For you

1:05:00 > 1:05:01# And me

1:05:01 > 1:05:02# And me

1:05:02 > 1:05:04# You just wait

1:05:04 > 1:05:07# You just wait and see

1:05:07 > 1:05:09# Another day goes by

1:05:09 > 1:05:12# Still the children cry

1:05:12 > 1:05:16# Put a little love in your heart. #

1:05:16 > 1:05:20We were touring Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand,

1:05:20 > 1:05:24the Philippines, the Far East, Europe and Scandinavia.

1:05:24 > 1:05:26It became enormous.

1:05:26 > 1:05:27It was not having a manager.

1:05:27 > 1:05:30I said to the boys, "We're going to enjoy this,"

1:05:30 > 1:05:33and that's the reason we got the DC5 plane,

1:05:33 > 1:05:36so we can take off whenever we wanted to.

1:05:36 > 1:05:39We were not going to work more than five days a week,

1:05:39 > 1:05:43so whenever we toured we would stop off somewhere for a couple of days

1:05:43 > 1:05:46and just chill out.

1:05:46 > 1:05:51On the longer trips we'd stop off for a week or so in Fiji or Hawaii,

1:05:51 > 1:05:55all these different places to recharge the batteries,

1:05:55 > 1:05:57and it was so exciting.

1:05:57 > 1:06:01And looking back I realise how lucky we were.

1:06:01 > 1:06:03# And the world

1:06:03 > 1:06:04# The world

1:06:04 > 1:06:06# Will be a better place

1:06:06 > 1:06:07# And the world

1:06:07 > 1:06:08# The world

1:06:08 > 1:06:10# Will be a better place

1:06:10 > 1:06:11# For you

1:06:11 > 1:06:13# For you

1:06:13 > 1:06:14# And me

1:06:14 > 1:06:15# And me

1:06:15 > 1:06:20# You just wait and see

1:06:20 > 1:06:23# Put a little love in your heart

1:06:24 > 1:06:28# Put a little love in your heart

1:06:28 > 1:06:30# Put a little love in your heart

1:06:30 > 1:06:33# And just a little bit of love

1:06:33 > 1:06:36# Put a little love in your heart... #

1:06:36 > 1:06:37We had fun.

1:06:37 > 1:06:40You've got to have time to have fun and take it in.

1:06:40 > 1:06:44And I think if the fun goes out of it that's the time you stop.

1:06:44 > 1:06:49# Put a little love in your heart. #

1:06:49 > 1:06:52They obviously got on together really well.

1:06:52 > 1:06:53They liked each other.

1:06:53 > 1:06:55They were having great fun.

1:06:55 > 1:06:57They were living the dream.

1:06:57 > 1:06:59Once that's gone, they had that four years of doing that,

1:06:59 > 1:07:01then you don't get it back.

1:07:01 > 1:07:03But those four years are just magical.

1:07:03 > 1:07:07We toured the world for about four years

1:07:07 > 1:07:13and were having hits everywhere, which was great fun, enjoyment.

1:07:13 > 1:07:19But the excitement had gone and it had really become a slog, hard work.

1:07:19 > 1:07:24They did that amount of work in that incredible amount of time.

1:07:24 > 1:07:2613 albums in four years, with all that amount of touring

1:07:26 > 1:07:29and stuff, is quite phenomenal.

1:07:29 > 1:07:33I mean, no other British band did that amount of work, no question.

1:08:01 > 1:08:06In '67, I felt we'd gone as far as I wanted to go.

1:08:06 > 1:08:11I always wanted to stop while you're still on top.

1:08:11 > 1:08:15Touring, I found was you were losing your own identity

1:08:15 > 1:08:18because you're locked away.

1:08:18 > 1:08:20You have press conference after press conference,

1:08:20 > 1:08:26in each city you went in, and I felt I was beginning to lose my identity

1:08:26 > 1:08:31and I wanted to get back to Dave Clark being Dave Clark the person.

1:08:31 > 1:08:34The boys were getting also tired of touring,

1:08:34 > 1:08:39so I said, "Well, we'll stop while we're still selling out."

1:08:39 > 1:08:43So we gave up touring, came back to England

1:08:43 > 1:08:47and all we did was record and do television from the UK.

1:08:49 > 1:08:52British groups have taken their music all over the world

1:08:52 > 1:08:55and our next group are as famous in America

1:08:55 > 1:08:56as they are here.

1:08:56 > 1:09:00With enough gold records to put Fort Knox out of business, it's

1:09:00 > 1:09:02the Dave Clark Five.

1:09:03 > 1:09:07# Everybody knows you said goodbye

1:09:07 > 1:09:11# Everybody knows we're through

1:09:11 > 1:09:16# Now they all can see the tears I cry

1:09:16 > 1:09:20# Running down my face for you. #

1:09:20 > 1:09:23Eddie, don't go into the kitchen

1:09:23 > 1:09:26because you know what's coming on next.

1:09:26 > 1:09:28- ALL:- A message from the sponsor.

1:09:33 > 1:09:35I wanted to make a television special,

1:09:35 > 1:09:40and I'd already shot some filmed sequences with the boys on location

1:09:40 > 1:09:45water-skiing, which was premiered on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1966.

1:09:45 > 1:09:50You'll see the guys here doing some startling water-skiing in England.

1:09:53 > 1:09:54# Nineteen days

1:09:54 > 1:10:00# Before I get to see my loving girl again. #

1:10:00 > 1:10:03DAVE CLARK: It was the first time Ed had shown a music film,

1:10:03 > 1:10:05because it was a live show,

1:10:05 > 1:10:09but Ed took a chance and it got such an amazing reaction

1:10:09 > 1:10:12that he asked me to film another one.

1:10:12 > 1:10:16Well, that gave me the confidence to go on and write and direct

1:10:16 > 1:10:21a television special that became Hold On, It's The Dave Clark Five.

1:10:31 > 1:10:33# H

1:10:33 > 1:10:34# O

1:10:34 > 1:10:36# L

1:10:36 > 1:10:38# D

1:10:38 > 1:10:40# O

1:10:40 > 1:10:41# N

1:10:41 > 1:10:43# Hold on, yes, hold on

1:10:43 > 1:10:45# Oh, hold on

1:10:51 > 1:10:54# From England to the USA

1:10:54 > 1:10:58# All around the world we'll go

1:10:58 > 1:11:01# And every country that we visit

1:11:01 > 1:11:04# We hope you're gonna like our show

1:11:04 > 1:11:07# So hold on, yes, hold on

1:11:07 > 1:11:11# Oh, hold on... #

1:11:11 > 1:11:15DAVE CLARK: Well, after doing the Sullivan Show I storyboarded it

1:11:15 > 1:11:19and we shot it on location and at Pinewood Studios.

1:11:19 > 1:11:21# ..and everybody's gonna know... #

1:11:21 > 1:11:24Got American star Richard Chamberlain

1:11:24 > 1:11:26and the gorgeous Lulu as guests.

1:11:26 > 1:11:28It was very off-the-wall.

1:11:28 > 1:11:31# So hold on, yes, hold on

1:11:31 > 1:11:34# Oh, hold on... #

1:11:37 > 1:11:42It was showing the boys in another light, see us perform,

1:11:42 > 1:11:47see us in the studio, see us on location, some comedy sketches.

1:11:47 > 1:11:50It was like a really glossy one-hour television commercial.

1:11:50 > 1:11:52And as we'd stopped touring,

1:11:52 > 1:11:57it was a great way of still being seen by the fans around the world.

1:11:57 > 1:12:00# And on your money we won't get far

1:12:00 > 1:12:03# But, baby

1:12:03 > 1:12:05# You got what it takes

1:12:05 > 1:12:07# Oh, to satisfy

1:12:07 > 1:12:11# You got what it takes to set my soul on fire

1:12:11 > 1:12:15# But oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah

1:12:15 > 1:12:18# You got what it takes for me

1:12:18 > 1:12:23# You don't live in a beautiful place

1:12:23 > 1:12:26# And you don't dress in the best of taste

1:12:26 > 1:12:30# Oh, nature didn't give you such a beautiful face

1:12:30 > 1:12:33# But, baby

1:12:33 > 1:12:35# You got what it takes. #

1:12:35 > 1:12:40MUSIC: I Need Love

1:12:51 > 1:12:54# You know I need love

1:12:55 > 1:12:57# Yes, I need love

1:13:00 > 1:13:04# You see me with another girl and that starts complications

1:13:04 > 1:13:08# Don't be angry, baby, please be patient

1:13:08 > 1:13:09# Cos I need love

1:13:09 > 1:13:11# Love

1:13:11 > 1:13:14# You know what I need, I need love

1:13:14 > 1:13:15# Love... #

1:13:16 > 1:13:21CHEERING

1:13:21 > 1:13:28I don't know. All this fuss just for the groceries! Well, it's a living.

1:13:28 > 1:13:30# ..you know I need love

1:13:30 > 1:13:34# Oh-whoa, I need love

1:13:34 > 1:13:38# You know what I need, I need love

1:13:38 > 1:13:41# Love, love, I need love, love, love

1:13:44 > 1:13:47# Nineteen days

1:13:47 > 1:13:52# Each town I go to brings me nearer home

1:13:53 > 1:13:54# Nineteen days

1:13:54 > 1:13:56# Been working too hard

1:13:56 > 1:14:00# Every finger to the bone

1:14:00 > 1:14:02# I'm gonna be moving on home

1:14:02 > 1:14:06# Baby, gonna be moving on home

1:14:08 > 1:14:10# Moving on home

1:14:10 > 1:14:14# I hope I find you waiting there

1:14:14 > 1:14:19# In nineteen days... #

1:14:19 > 1:14:20GUNSHOT

1:14:30 > 1:14:32DAVE CLARK: Everything went so well.

1:14:32 > 1:14:35Between '67 and '70,

1:14:35 > 1:14:39we hadn't been out the charts, we'd had ten consecutive hit singles

1:14:39 > 1:14:42throughout England, Europe and the Far East.

1:15:09 > 1:15:13Dave was more managerial, he knew more than we knew.

1:15:13 > 1:15:16And it became clear that

1:15:16 > 1:15:19that was his role in the Dave Clark Five,

1:15:19 > 1:15:22you know, was to actually manage them

1:15:22 > 1:15:25on a business level as well as a music level.

1:15:25 > 1:15:29So it would be right that he would produce the stuff, you know,

1:15:29 > 1:15:30for the band.

1:15:30 > 1:15:32INSTRUMENTS TUNE

1:15:32 > 1:15:35Hold on, fellas. Come on, let's have some quiet!

1:15:35 > 1:15:41Come on, let's try one this time. Right, on the red light.

1:15:41 > 1:15:45One, two... One, two, three!

1:15:45 > 1:15:48# There's only one thing for them to try

1:15:48 > 1:15:50# To lay their bodies down and die

1:15:50 > 1:15:53# This they do when the families see

1:15:53 > 1:15:56# They've been fighting so foolishly

1:15:59 > 1:16:01# You're listening to a true account

1:16:01 > 1:16:03# Of what this story's all about

1:16:03 > 1:16:06# It's inside and out

1:16:06 > 1:16:08# Tell you what it's all about

1:16:08 > 1:16:10# It's inside and out

1:16:10 > 1:16:12# Tell you what it's all about... #

1:16:12 > 1:16:15SHARON OSBOURNE: It's great that now people

1:16:15 > 1:16:18that aren't in the industry, who love Dave's music,

1:16:18 > 1:16:22can actually realise what he has achieved

1:16:22 > 1:16:24and what he's done for the music industry,

1:16:24 > 1:16:27being a pioneer, being a great entrepreneur,

1:16:27 > 1:16:32being a businessman, and also having the sensibility to be an artist.

1:16:32 > 1:16:36He was the mastermind behind it all.

1:16:36 > 1:16:40I think of him as one of the giants of the music business.

1:16:40 > 1:16:42Dave Clark was light years ahead of everyone else.

1:16:42 > 1:16:45He is an absolutely stone-cold genius.

1:16:47 > 1:16:50# Now you know what it's all about

1:16:50 > 1:16:52# Take a look inside and out

1:16:52 > 1:16:54# A very sad song with a tale of woe

1:16:54 > 1:16:56# I take my leave, I have to go

1:17:00 > 1:17:02# Look very deep and look very long

1:17:02 > 1:17:04# To find the moral of this song

1:17:04 > 1:17:06# It's inside and out... #

1:17:06 > 1:17:09That sounds better, just take one back, John.

1:17:09 > 1:17:12That's fine. What do you think, Mike?

1:17:12 > 1:17:13Yeah, it's OK.

1:17:13 > 1:17:16David was very, very clever.

1:17:16 > 1:17:19He leased them the masters, and that was unheard of.

1:17:19 > 1:17:21You know, like saying, "Well, you can own them for five years

1:17:21 > 1:17:23"and then they're mine afterwards".

1:17:23 > 1:17:26No-one had ever done that. He led the way with that.

1:17:26 > 1:17:28Now everybody, you know, loads of people do it,

1:17:28 > 1:17:31but David was the first to ever, ever do that.

1:17:31 > 1:17:32It was a one-off.

1:17:32 > 1:17:34- PAUL MCCARTNEY: - We were just musicians,

1:17:34 > 1:17:37didn't understand any of that, so if someone stuck a contract

1:17:37 > 1:17:39under our nose and said, "Sign it," we went, "Is this all right?"

1:17:39 > 1:17:41They'd go "Yeah," and we signed it.

1:17:41 > 1:17:45That's why I don't have my publishing to this day, you know.

1:17:49 > 1:17:51Well, you can't win them all.

1:17:52 > 1:17:55ELTON JOHN: Dave Clark is the most extraordinary man

1:17:55 > 1:17:56in the music business.

1:17:56 > 1:17:58He owned all their early masters.

1:17:58 > 1:18:01He had complete control of his destiny.

1:18:01 > 1:18:06To have that musical savvy or to have that knowledge is unbelievable.

1:18:06 > 1:18:09Mike, piano sounds woolly, can you get a harder sound?

1:18:09 > 1:18:11STRUMS GUITAR

1:18:11 > 1:18:15- That sounds fine. - Right, we'll try a take now.

1:18:15 > 1:18:17We all went through our ups and downs on our lawsuits

1:18:17 > 1:18:20with people and the Rolling Stones with Alan Klein,

1:18:20 > 1:18:23the Beatles with Alan Klein, me with Dick James.

1:18:23 > 1:18:27Never happened to Dave Clark, because he didn't have to.

1:18:27 > 1:18:28Bastard.

1:18:28 > 1:18:30# Come on, you people now

1:18:30 > 1:18:32# Smile on your brother

1:18:32 > 1:18:34# Everybody get together

1:18:34 > 1:18:40# Try to love one another right now

1:18:40 > 1:18:43# Come on, you people now

1:18:43 > 1:18:45# Smile on your brother

1:18:45 > 1:18:47# Everybody get together

1:18:47 > 1:18:51# Try to love one another right now... #

1:18:54 > 1:18:59David said, quite wisely I think, that I think

1:18:59 > 1:19:03we should call it a day, you know, let's go out at the top.

1:19:03 > 1:19:05I said as soon as the enjoyment went we would stop,

1:19:05 > 1:19:08and we went out on a million seller and stopped.

1:19:08 > 1:19:10And we had a long discussion with the boys

1:19:10 > 1:19:15and they all agreed in '69 that we would stop in the spring of 1970.

1:19:18 > 1:19:21We'd achieved more than we ever dreamed of.

1:19:21 > 1:19:24# ..fading in the grass

1:19:24 > 1:19:26# Come on, you people now

1:19:26 > 1:19:28# Smile on your brother

1:19:28 > 1:19:30# Everybody get together

1:19:30 > 1:19:34# Try to love one another right now... #

1:19:34 > 1:19:36100 million records sold,

1:19:36 > 1:19:39that's incredible within itself.

1:19:39 > 1:19:4123 albums.

1:19:41 > 1:19:47And then 30 top hit singles. I mean, what can you say?

1:19:49 > 1:19:51# Come on, you people now

1:19:51 > 1:19:53# Smile on your brother

1:19:53 > 1:19:55# Everybody get together

1:19:55 > 1:19:59# Try to love one another right now... #

1:19:59 > 1:20:03DAVE CLARK: And I felt when you're going to stop you should stop,

1:20:03 > 1:20:06so I stopped doing press interviews and television interviews.

1:20:06 > 1:20:09And it wasn't that I was ashamed about the '60s, I'm not,

1:20:09 > 1:20:11I look back with great relish.

1:20:16 > 1:20:19Well, to me the greatest television show ever in England

1:20:19 > 1:20:22was a programme called Ready Steady Go!

1:20:22 > 1:20:26It broke us, the DC5, it broke the Beatles, the Stones,

1:20:26 > 1:20:29it broke the whole British revolution.

1:20:29 > 1:20:31- PAUL MCCARTNEY:- Ready Steady Go! was a huge programme.

1:20:31 > 1:20:34You know, "the weekend starts here" I think was like the phrase,

1:20:34 > 1:20:37and it did, you know, for everyone.

1:20:37 > 1:20:41I heard that the television company that owned Ready Steady Go!

1:20:41 > 1:20:47- Rediffusion - had closed and that all the shows were being taken away,

1:20:47 > 1:20:51and it broke my heart to think that the tapes were being wiped

1:20:51 > 1:20:55and destroyed, the same as many other television shows in England.

1:20:55 > 1:20:59And I thought, "Well, this is a great piece of history

1:20:59 > 1:21:03"that actually depicts the excitement of the '60s."

1:21:03 > 1:21:07MUSIC: Here Comes Summer

1:21:18 > 1:21:24Ready Steady Go! was our kind of "mustn't miss TV".

1:21:24 > 1:21:28I can remember that feeling of Friday night being at school

1:21:28 > 1:21:32and thinking, you know, getting home because it was Ready Steady Go!

1:21:34 > 1:21:36Nobody missed that show of our age group.

1:21:36 > 1:21:38Nobody, it was brilliant.

1:21:38 > 1:21:41And Cathy McGowan, do you remember with that hair?

1:21:41 > 1:21:43I wanted her hair so badly.

1:21:57 > 1:21:59- ELTON JOHN:- It's another case of Dave Clark being a genius.

1:21:59 > 1:22:02Ready Steady Go! had everybody who was a star.

1:22:02 > 1:22:03Dave had the foresight to buy it,

1:22:03 > 1:22:06and for the love of the music, you know.

1:22:06 > 1:22:10It's the greatest era of music, and that TV series I think is

1:22:10 > 1:22:12probably the greatest music series of all time.

1:22:12 > 1:22:15DAVE CLARK: It was like buying a rare painting,

1:22:15 > 1:22:18it was there to keep

1:22:18 > 1:22:21and to show future generations.

1:22:21 > 1:22:24# She said you hurt her so

1:22:24 > 1:22:27# She almost lost her mind

1:22:27 > 1:22:30# But now she says she knows

1:22:30 > 1:22:33# You're not the hurting kind

1:22:33 > 1:22:40# She says she loves you and you know that can't be bad

1:22:40 > 1:22:45# She loves you and you know you should be glad... #

1:22:45 > 1:22:48I had bought the series back in the '70s

1:22:48 > 1:22:50and decided to sit on it.

1:22:50 > 1:22:53I didn't buy it for monetary reasons, believe it or not.

1:22:53 > 1:22:56I felt that if somebody else had bought it they would have

1:22:56 > 1:23:00sold it off piecemeal and you'd have got little clips on every show.

1:23:00 > 1:23:05I thought if I sat on it and waited until the sort of full cycle,

1:23:05 > 1:23:11which is like 20 years on, people would hopefully appreciate it more.

1:23:11 > 1:23:17# I see a red door and I want it painted black

1:23:17 > 1:23:23# No colours any more, I want them to turn black

1:23:23 > 1:23:29# I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes

1:23:29 > 1:23:33# I have to turn my head until my darkness goes... #

1:23:33 > 1:23:35Ready Steady Go! was live.

1:23:35 > 1:23:39It went out on, as I said, on a Friday night.

1:23:39 > 1:23:44You just arrived in the afternoon, you rehearsed and it went out live.

1:23:44 > 1:23:45It wasn't edited.

1:23:45 > 1:23:49And the thing about Ready Steady Go! is everybody would tune in to it

1:23:49 > 1:23:53because it depicted what was happening in the world in the sense

1:23:53 > 1:24:00of the excitement of something new was happening, fashion, film, music.

1:24:00 > 1:24:01Kiss me, baby!

1:24:01 > 1:24:03CHEERING

1:24:03 > 1:24:07# Stop in the name of love

1:24:07 > 1:24:11# Before you break my heart... #

1:24:11 > 1:24:16Motown Tamla records - Mary Wells, Miracles, Marvin Gaye.

1:24:16 > 1:24:17# Can I get a witness?

1:24:17 > 1:24:19# Can I have a witness?

1:24:19 > 1:24:22# I want a witness... #

1:24:22 > 1:24:27# Summer's here and the time is right for dancing in the street... #

1:24:27 > 1:24:31Without American music, there would be no British explosion.

1:24:31 > 1:24:36I mean the Beatles have admitted this, and so... And I certainly did.

1:24:36 > 1:24:40I mean I... My music that I was weaned on and I played

1:24:40 > 1:24:43when I first started the group was Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry,

1:24:43 > 1:24:45Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis.

1:24:45 > 1:24:46# Come over, baby

1:24:46 > 1:24:49# I've got the chicken in the barn

1:24:50 > 1:24:52# Come over, baby

1:24:52 > 1:24:55# While I've got the bull by the horn

1:24:55 > 1:24:58# We ain't fakin'

1:24:58 > 1:24:59# Whole lot of shakin' goin' on... #

1:24:59 > 1:25:03# Anyway, anyhow, anywhere... #

1:25:09 > 1:25:12- How did the Beatles get their name? - I just thought of it.

1:25:12 > 1:25:14You just thought of it? Another brilliant Beatle!

1:25:14 > 1:25:16CHEERING

1:25:16 > 1:25:18# I'm all cried out

1:25:18 > 1:25:24# All my little tears are all dried out... #

1:25:24 > 1:25:26And the thing about Ready Steady Go!,

1:25:26 > 1:25:28I mean, they would do special shows.

1:25:28 > 1:25:32I mean, Otis Redding wasn't known, and yet they were excited about

1:25:32 > 1:25:35Otis Redding, so they put on a whole show on Otis Redding with his band

1:25:35 > 1:25:40singing Satisfaction and all these hits and it's live and wonderful.

1:25:40 > 1:25:45# I can't get no satisfaction

1:25:45 > 1:25:47# I've tried, I've tried

1:25:47 > 1:25:49# I've tried, I've tried

1:25:49 > 1:25:52# I can't get me no, no, no

1:25:52 > 1:25:55# And I can't get no, no, no

1:25:55 > 1:25:58# When I'm riding in my car

1:25:58 > 1:26:00# And the man talks on the radio

1:26:00 > 1:26:03# Keep tellin' me more and more

1:26:03 > 1:26:06# About that useless information

1:26:06 > 1:26:08# He's tryin' to mess up my imagination... #

1:26:08 > 1:26:11Paul, do you mind girls screaming all through your act?

1:26:11 > 1:26:15No, we like them screaming generally, all of us,

1:26:15 > 1:26:18but it's a bit much all the way through.

1:26:18 > 1:26:23Do you think you're a mod? Do you know what a mod is, Ringo?

1:26:23 > 1:26:25No, I'm not a mod or a rocker.

1:26:25 > 1:26:28- You're nothing?- No. - No.- I'm a mocker.

1:26:28 > 1:26:31George, can we hear your latest record now, please?

1:26:31 > 1:26:33No.

1:26:33 > 1:26:37Yes, certainly you can hear it, and it's called Can't Buy Me Love.

1:26:37 > 1:26:40And on Parlophone and it's 6/9.

1:26:40 > 1:26:42# I don't care too much for money

1:26:42 > 1:26:45# Money can't buy me love

1:26:45 > 1:26:50# I'll give you all I've got to give if you'll say you'll love me too

1:26:50 > 1:26:56# I may not have a lot to give but what I got I'll give to you

1:26:56 > 1:26:58# I don't care too much for money

1:26:58 > 1:27:01# Money can't buy me love... #

1:27:01 > 1:27:05Thank you very much and God bless you, you've got a lucky face.

1:27:05 > 1:27:08People are too pessimistic, you see.

1:27:08 > 1:27:12I found the one thing about the '60s is it was very optimistic.

1:27:12 > 1:27:15Anything was possible, whether you were in the entertainment industry

1:27:15 > 1:27:19or you were selling motorcars or whatever.

1:27:19 > 1:27:20There was hope.

1:27:23 > 1:27:27I was in LA and I was invited to a seminar by Lee Strasberg,

1:27:27 > 1:27:32who devised method acting and taught Marlon Brando, Paul Newman

1:27:32 > 1:27:34and all the greats.

1:27:34 > 1:27:37I worked with him at the Actors' Studio in Hollywood

1:27:37 > 1:27:39and it was very inspiring.

1:27:39 > 1:27:41I decided I wanted to go to drama school

1:27:41 > 1:27:44and I auditioned for London's prestigious

1:27:44 > 1:27:47Central School of Speech and Drama

1:27:47 > 1:27:49and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

1:27:49 > 1:27:51They didn't know who I was.

1:27:51 > 1:27:54I grew a beard, used my mother's maiden name

1:27:54 > 1:27:56and, to my amazement, I got into both.

1:27:56 > 1:28:01But I chose Central, as they had the more modern approach.

1:28:01 > 1:28:04There I was leaving music and going into theatre.

1:28:04 > 1:28:06I left school at the age of 15.

1:28:06 > 1:28:11I had never read Shakespeare, Chekhov, Ibsen and Brecht.

1:28:11 > 1:28:15So for me, to act in plays by these classic writers

1:28:15 > 1:28:18was an enlightening experience.

1:28:18 > 1:28:20Going to drama school gave me

1:28:20 > 1:28:24a great grounding in how directors worked in theatre.

1:28:24 > 1:28:28Just observing them, it gave me a great understanding of actors

1:28:28 > 1:28:31and how to get a good performance from them.

1:28:31 > 1:28:35So I decided then that I would enjoy being on the other side,

1:28:35 > 1:28:39directing, producing, creating, the other side of the curtain.

1:28:43 > 1:28:45# Move on... #

1:28:47 > 1:28:49LAURENCE OLIVIER NARRATES:

1:28:54 > 1:28:57CLIFF RICHARD: # If music be the food of love, then play on

1:28:57 > 1:29:00# Lend me your ears as I lay down this song

1:29:00 > 1:29:07# You're touched by the feeling, it's hard to control

1:29:07 > 1:29:11# Let me tell you, people, I was born

1:29:11 > 1:29:13# To rock'n'roll... #

1:29:13 > 1:29:17Time was very special and very dear to my heart.

1:29:17 > 1:29:21I felt that the music, especially as the main character was a rock star,

1:29:21 > 1:29:25had to be really good, commercial songs.

1:29:25 > 1:29:29So I set about writing the songs and I got other friends involved.

1:29:29 > 1:29:31Made a demo of the album.

1:29:31 > 1:29:32So I happened to be in LA

1:29:32 > 1:29:36and I thought, "The person I'll go to is Stevie Wonder".

1:29:36 > 1:29:39So I played Stevie the album and he loved it so much

1:29:39 > 1:29:41he said, "I'll do a couple of songs."

1:29:41 > 1:29:44# She's so beautiful

1:29:45 > 1:29:48# She's so kind and free, yeah

1:29:48 > 1:29:51# She's so beautiful

1:29:51 > 1:29:54# She's all there is to me... #

1:29:54 > 1:29:59It was through the friendship, the relationship, that developed

1:29:59 > 1:30:00between myself and Dave.

1:30:02 > 1:30:04And it was just my honour to be a part of it.

1:30:04 > 1:30:06The world is going very fast,

1:30:06 > 1:30:09but sometimes it's going a little too fast because you forget

1:30:09 > 1:30:13the human element of it, which is very, very important.

1:30:13 > 1:30:15You want to be a part of something that's going to help

1:30:15 > 1:30:17and spread that message.

1:30:17 > 1:30:20The basic story is a rock star, the biggest rock star in the world,

1:30:20 > 1:30:26whether it would have been Elvis Presley or John Lennon, whoever,

1:30:26 > 1:30:30is beamed up into space and has to stand trial in the

1:30:30 > 1:30:34High Court of the Universe for all the wrongs that the Earth has done.

1:30:34 > 1:30:39# It's in every

1:30:39 > 1:30:41# One of us

1:30:42 > 1:30:47# To be wise... #

1:30:47 > 1:30:49You know, I'm not a religious person.

1:30:49 > 1:30:50I believe all gods are one and that's what

1:30:50 > 1:30:55I tried to depict in Akash, the part that Laurence Olivier played,

1:30:55 > 1:30:57was all gods are one, it doesn't matter whether you're Buddhist

1:30:57 > 1:31:01or you're Muslim or you're Jewish or you're Christian or whatever.

1:31:01 > 1:31:02It's in every one of us,

1:31:02 > 1:31:06the sentiment to me - that encapsulates what Time is about,

1:31:06 > 1:31:10that we're trying to present to people this thing,

1:31:10 > 1:31:13this indefinable thing

1:31:13 > 1:31:17that is potentially within every man, woman and child

1:31:17 > 1:31:20that could lead to a lifestyle that is far greater, far kinder,

1:31:20 > 1:31:22far more compassionate, far more successful,

1:31:22 > 1:31:24and it's within us to see that.

1:31:24 > 1:31:26It was songs that I feel were written for me

1:31:26 > 1:31:30and that only I could have done.

1:31:31 > 1:31:37So I feel very honoured to have been able to be a part of the project.

1:31:37 > 1:31:39# What on Earth?

1:31:39 > 1:31:43# What do you suggest?

1:31:43 > 1:31:46# I can't do any more

1:31:46 > 1:31:51# Than do my best... #

1:31:51 > 1:31:57It was just all starting, really, I mean writing songs,

1:31:57 > 1:32:01getting them finished for a record deal, you know, was before

1:32:01 > 1:32:05anything had happened really, so it was a great thing to do for me.

1:32:05 > 1:32:09Thanks to Julian for at least having the balls to say,

1:32:09 > 1:32:11"Right, I'll go and have a go,"

1:32:11 > 1:32:13because, I mean, it takes a lot of courage to do that.

1:32:13 > 1:32:16I tend to like all three that we've done.

1:32:17 > 1:32:20They're all... I think they're all special.

1:32:20 > 1:32:22I think they're all beautiful songs.

1:32:23 > 1:32:25# Tragedy

1:32:26 > 1:32:29# Feels like a melody

1:32:30 > 1:32:33# We've got to listen to

1:32:34 > 1:32:36# From time to time

1:32:39 > 1:32:41# History

1:32:42 > 1:32:46# Feels like a part of me

1:32:46 > 1:32:48# Is every century

1:32:48 > 1:32:53# A spiral we all climb?

1:32:53 > 1:32:57# I guess time will teach us all

1:32:58 > 1:33:01# Time will teach us all... #

1:33:01 > 1:33:04I played Stevie the track Time Will Teach Us All,

1:33:04 > 1:33:07and he was so impressed with Julian's performance

1:33:07 > 1:33:09he said, "Can I get on there and sing with him?"

1:33:09 > 1:33:11And he did.

1:33:11 > 1:33:15So he's on the record singing with you, and also playing the keyboards.

1:33:15 > 1:33:18# I guess, I guess, I guess, I guess that

1:33:18 > 1:33:20# Time will teach us all

1:33:20 > 1:33:22# Time will teach us all

1:33:22 > 1:33:24# Time will teach us all

1:33:24 > 1:33:26# Time will teach us all

1:33:26 > 1:33:28# Time will teach us all

1:33:28 > 1:33:29# Yeah, yeah

1:33:29 > 1:33:32# Time will teach us all

1:33:32 > 1:33:34# Time will teach us

1:33:34 > 1:33:36# Time will teach us all

1:33:36 > 1:33:37# Time will teach us all

1:33:37 > 1:33:39# Time will teach us all

1:33:39 > 1:33:41# Time will teach us

1:33:41 > 1:33:44# Time will teach us all

1:33:44 > 1:33:45# When will we learn?

1:33:45 > 1:33:47# Time will teach us all

1:33:47 > 1:33:48# When will we learn that... #

1:33:48 > 1:33:51INTERVIEWER: How do you feel about being on the album of Time

1:33:51 > 1:33:55with people like Cliff Richard, Stevie Wonder, Freddie Mercury,

1:33:55 > 1:33:58Dionne Warwick, Julian Lennon and Dave Clark as well?

1:33:58 > 1:34:00Very strange company for you.

1:34:00 > 1:34:02Absolutely thrilled.

1:34:02 > 1:34:03Absolutely thrilled.

1:34:03 > 1:34:05When I first met David, he just said, "Look, already

1:34:05 > 1:34:09"all these songs have been sung by these various people, and Olivier's

1:34:09 > 1:34:12"done this, Dionne Warwick's done that, Cliff Richard's done that and

1:34:12 > 1:34:15"Julian Lennon's done that," and I said, "You've come a bit late."

1:34:15 > 1:34:20# I'm just a singer with a song

1:34:20 > 1:34:23# How can I try

1:34:24 > 1:34:26# To right the wrong?

1:34:27 > 1:34:33# For just a singer with a melody

1:34:33 > 1:34:35# I'm caught in-between

1:34:36 > 1:34:39# With a fading dream... #

1:34:39 > 1:34:43When we first met, I said to you, he said, "How can I do this song?"

1:34:43 > 1:34:45This was In My Defence - and I said to him,

1:34:45 > 1:34:48- "Well, I want a cross between..." - Edith Piaf.

1:34:48 > 1:34:52..Edith Piaf, Jennifer Holliday, I said, and Shirley Bassey.

1:34:52 > 1:34:53- He said... - I just said,

1:34:53 > 1:34:57"David, I have all their dresses, I can do it perfectly."

1:34:59 > 1:35:01# It's our way

1:35:01 > 1:35:04# We never listen enough

1:35:04 > 1:35:07# Never face the truth

1:35:07 > 1:35:10# Then like a passing song

1:35:11 > 1:35:14# Love is here and then it's gone

1:35:14 > 1:35:19# I'm just a singer with a song... #

1:35:19 > 1:35:21I undertook this project knowing fully well

1:35:21 > 1:35:22that he was the overseer,

1:35:22 > 1:35:25but, of course, I wanted to put my sort of stamp on it.

1:35:25 > 1:35:28He's got this wonderful thing with using block harmonies

1:35:28 > 1:35:30and very off-the-wall sounds,

1:35:30 > 1:35:34and it would have been wrong to take that away.

1:35:34 > 1:35:38I mean, that was what Freddie gave to the two songs

1:35:38 > 1:35:41that made them magical.

1:35:41 > 1:35:44When he first approached me, the track Time,

1:35:44 > 1:35:49the title track, was not really considered, but after I did

1:35:49 > 1:35:52In My Defence, I think he kind of liked it and then suddenly I sort

1:35:52 > 1:35:54of said... I said,

1:35:54 > 1:35:58"Ooh, I think I can do something with the title track."

1:35:58 > 1:36:03# Time waits for nobody

1:36:06 > 1:36:08# Time

1:36:08 > 1:36:11# Waits for nobody

1:36:11 > 1:36:14# We all must plan our hopes together

1:36:14 > 1:36:18# Or we'll have no more future at all

1:36:18 > 1:36:22# Time

1:36:23 > 1:36:26# Waits for nobody. #

1:36:28 > 1:36:31The idea was to finish the album

1:36:31 > 1:36:33and bring the stage musical out.

1:36:35 > 1:36:39- VOICEOVER:- Time The Musical has the most spectacular special effects

1:36:39 > 1:36:41ever seen on stage.

1:36:41 > 1:36:45"Time is magical."

1:36:45 > 1:36:47"A sensation."

1:36:47 > 1:36:49"A celebration."

1:36:49 > 1:36:51"An experience not to be missed."

1:36:51 > 1:36:55I was very impressed by Time

1:36:55 > 1:36:57as an outsider before I'd seen it.

1:36:57 > 1:37:00Dave Clark was not running a five-piece band,

1:37:00 > 1:37:03but had put together a musical.

1:37:03 > 1:37:05Getting a show off the ground

1:37:05 > 1:37:08and opening it anywhere is monumental.

1:37:09 > 1:37:12He was the guy who thought it up, sorted it out,

1:37:12 > 1:37:14wrote it and got it on.

1:37:14 > 1:37:17And no-one should underestimate how difficult that is.

1:37:28 > 1:37:31Whether Dave Clark realises it or not,

1:37:31 > 1:37:36he was a child of the writings of Bertolt Brecht,

1:37:36 > 1:37:41and his plays always claimed to be about changing the world.

1:37:41 > 1:37:46There would be a message, he hoped you would accept it,

1:37:46 > 1:37:49but if you didn't, he wanted you to think about it.

1:37:49 > 1:37:53You seem content to allow the obscenity of the maimed and crippled

1:37:53 > 1:37:59who have to cope with broken lives after each confrontation of force.

1:38:01 > 1:38:03Your East and West

1:38:03 > 1:38:06have never even made the effort

1:38:06 > 1:38:09to conquer the basics necessary

1:38:09 > 1:38:14for people of different cultures to exist in harmony.

1:38:14 > 1:38:17And I think Time was a lot more entertaining

1:38:17 > 1:38:19than many of Bertolt Brecht's plays,

1:38:19 > 1:38:26but I think deep down they were written by people with a conscience.

1:38:26 > 1:38:30# Peace then wars then peace again

1:38:30 > 1:38:33# Trial and error true... #

1:38:34 > 1:38:36Being ahead of your time is not looking

1:38:36 > 1:38:39over your shoulder to find out what else is going on.

1:38:39 > 1:38:42Time was way ahead of its time.

1:38:42 > 1:38:45# She's so beautiful

1:38:45 > 1:38:48# She's so kind and free, yeah

1:38:48 > 1:38:51# She's so beautiful

1:38:51 > 1:38:53# She's all there is to me... #

1:38:55 > 1:39:01Talking about peace and ending war, it's an ongoing commitment

1:39:03 > 1:39:10to bring life, and to perpetuate love, life and love.

1:39:10 > 1:39:13There is a power greater than logic

1:39:13 > 1:39:16and stronger than fear...

1:39:17 > 1:39:22..that nourishes hope and lights the way home.

1:39:24 > 1:39:27It is the power of love.

1:39:29 > 1:39:30I think it is

1:39:30 > 1:39:34an absolutely extraordinary thing to have thought up.

1:39:34 > 1:39:37That's what's great about life, isn't it,

1:39:37 > 1:39:38that you just never know?

1:39:38 > 1:39:41One minute you're in Tottenham, the next thing you know you're

1:39:41 > 1:39:45talking to Larry O! Sir Larry O, sorry.

1:39:45 > 1:39:48INTERVIEWER: What's he like as a director, Sir Laurence?

1:39:48 > 1:39:49Very, very good.

1:39:49 > 1:39:52Very understanding and very patient.

1:39:52 > 1:39:54For someone of my generation,

1:39:54 > 1:39:57Olivier was the absolute tops.

1:39:57 > 1:40:00He was the king, the emperor, the god really.

1:40:00 > 1:40:01He'd done it all.

1:40:01 > 1:40:05Every second that you spend in the light

1:40:05 > 1:40:09of someone like Laurence Olivier, it's like a blessing.

1:40:09 > 1:40:11Olivier is just magic.

1:40:11 > 1:40:13I mean, you know, when you hear his voice,

1:40:13 > 1:40:14you just want to put a song next to it.

1:40:14 > 1:40:17# We've got to build this world together

1:40:17 > 1:40:21# Or we'll have no more future at all

1:40:21 > 1:40:27# Because time

1:40:27 > 1:40:30# It waits for nobody... #

1:40:34 > 1:40:37Great live performances are uplifting experiences.

1:40:37 > 1:40:39They're almost spiritual.

1:40:39 > 1:40:41You don't have to be religious to come out of there feeling

1:40:41 > 1:40:44that breath of fresh air that I just had.

1:40:44 > 1:40:50You see, my friends, it's in every one of us to be wise.

1:40:50 > 1:40:53Find your heart.

1:40:53 > 1:40:56Open up both your eyes.

1:40:56 > 1:41:02We can all know everything without ever knowing why.

1:41:04 > 1:41:09It's in every one of us, by and by.

1:41:11 > 1:41:13Perfect casting for Akash. Perfect.

1:41:13 > 1:41:17And the best bit of luck you can have is

1:41:17 > 1:41:21to be offered the right part at the right time.

1:41:22 > 1:41:25It could have been a disaster, it really could.

1:41:25 > 1:41:29But the thing that enthused me was my peers,

1:41:29 > 1:41:34people that I really respected, like Laurence Olivier, Freddie Mercury,

1:41:34 > 1:41:38Stevie Wonder, all these people coming forward,

1:41:38 > 1:41:41it made me feel, "Well, I am going in the right direction".

1:41:41 > 1:41:45We played to over a million people, and even the Time album and single

1:41:45 > 1:41:47sold over 12 million copies.

1:41:47 > 1:41:51I'm very proud of it, very, very proud.

1:41:51 > 1:41:53He's completely timeless.

1:41:53 > 1:41:59# While the world we love tears itself apart

1:41:59 > 1:42:04# I'm just a singer with a song

1:42:04 > 1:42:07# How can I try

1:42:08 > 1:42:11# To right the wrong?

1:42:11 > 1:42:17# For just a singer with a melody

1:42:17 > 1:42:19# I'm caught in-between

1:42:21 > 1:42:24# With a fading dream... #

1:42:24 > 1:42:26INTERVIEWER: Can you put your hand on your heart

1:42:26 > 1:42:29and say that you knew of Dave Clark before you started to work with him?

1:42:29 > 1:42:32Oh, of course I did, yes. Of course I did.

1:42:32 > 1:42:37God, he was the great Dave Clark Five, for Christ's sake.

1:42:37 > 1:42:41They're as huge, well known as the English Dictionary.

1:42:41 > 1:42:45# Any way you want it, you will always hear me say

1:42:45 > 1:42:47# Hey, hey

1:42:47 > 1:42:48# It's all right, it's all right

1:42:48 > 1:42:50# It's all right, it's all right

1:42:50 > 1:42:51# It's all right, it's all right

1:43:18 > 1:43:20made a joyful sound.

1:43:20 > 1:43:26"Over and over and over again", the Dave Clark Five made a joyful sound.

1:43:26 > 1:43:30# I said over and over and over again

1:44:21 > 1:44:25Well, all the boys were close, but because Lenny and Rick were married,

1:44:25 > 1:44:30they'd go off with their wives and kids. We were like the

1:44:30 > 1:44:35three that were always socialising, our families, everything.

1:44:35 > 1:44:39And it was like a big part of your life has been taken away.

1:49:13 > 1:49:16ENGLISH ACCENT: Being that I'm from England too, from a long time ago,

1:49:16 > 1:49:17it was great.

1:49:45 > 1:49:49what with giving my head up to Dave Clark every night.

1:49:49 > 1:49:52Of course it would be Dave that would get somebody

1:49:52 > 1:49:56on a bloody hologram, wouldn't it, when we couldn't even spell it.

1:49:56 > 1:49:58Take one. That'll cost you a fiver.
