0:00:05 > 0:00:08A host of new country music stars

0:00:08 > 0:00:11have tempted a generation to turn their back on the nightclub,

0:00:11 > 0:00:14don their Stetsons, and jive the night away,

0:00:14 > 0:00:17from Ballymena to Ballydehob.

0:00:17 > 0:00:20This week, we are down at the farm with the men and women

0:00:20 > 0:00:24who have two passions in life, country music...

0:00:24 > 0:00:27She is easy on the eye, too, so she is.

0:00:27 > 0:00:28..and tractors.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31This is my... The rear end, as I call it.

0:00:33 > 0:00:37With all roads leading to a Donegal festival that combines them both...

0:00:37 > 0:00:38When the farmer lands here,

0:00:38 > 0:00:40he has no call to go home until Monday morning.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43These young farmers won't want to stall the digger.

0:00:43 > 0:00:45I am like a wean in a toy shop.

0:00:45 > 0:00:46With world records at stake...

0:00:46 > 0:00:50A thousand plus tractors in this field, fingers crossed.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52Will these tractor-lovers be sucking diesel...

0:00:52 > 0:00:55Words cannot explain. I am clean buzzing.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58..or left feeling banjaxed?

0:00:58 > 0:00:59Going to say a couple of prayers.

0:00:59 > 0:01:03Welcome to the agricultural world of Irish country music.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24If you are a young farmer working 16-hour days,

0:01:24 > 0:01:26you live for your nights out.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29Long days. We go up there at six o'clock in the morning

0:01:29 > 0:01:31and you might not get finished until eight o'clock at night.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34It is good to get out and let yourself go for a while.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37Being brought up in the countryside defines your musical taste.

0:01:37 > 0:01:41I'm not a big fan of Justin Bieber myself, no,

0:01:41 > 0:01:46more traditional Irish, or American country keeps me going, so it does.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48Well, he's no Justin Bieber, thankfully,

0:01:48 > 0:01:53but out in the sticks one artist in particular can pull a huge crowd.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55Ritchie Remo!

0:01:55 > 0:01:59Let's put our hands together...

0:01:59 > 0:02:03Ritchie Remo, from Claudy, is a country music pin-up.

0:02:04 > 0:02:11His song Hit The Diff has become something of a young farmers' anthem.

0:02:15 > 0:02:19When you listen to the radio and Hit The Diff comes on, you feel like you're in your prime.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22If you are in the tractor, it is so catchy,

0:02:22 > 0:02:26- you are driving along and you can dance your way and you can jive to it.- Yeah.

0:02:26 > 0:02:27But even on nights out,

0:02:27 > 0:02:30these young men and women still love to talk farming

0:02:30 > 0:02:33and they are precious when it comes to their tractors.

0:02:33 > 0:02:37My favourite tractor without a doubt is John Deere. Aye.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39- Definitely has to be New Holland.- No. Definitely SAME.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41The best tractor is a Massey Ferguson.

0:02:41 > 0:02:43As the saying goes, three steps into heaven, you cannot beat that.

0:02:43 > 0:02:49- No other yoke for the job.- The SAME will pull the ass out of any New Holland.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51If's she's not blue, she won't do!

0:02:51 > 0:02:54If she's not red, keep her in the shed.

0:02:54 > 0:02:55# Oh, hit the diff and pray

0:02:55 > 0:02:58# That she goes all the way

0:02:58 > 0:03:00# When I'm flat to the mat with my party hat... #

0:03:05 > 0:03:08Given the popularity of country music with young farmers

0:03:08 > 0:03:11the Whitecross Vintage Tractor Association in Donegal

0:03:11 > 0:03:13are ploughing ahead with preparations

0:03:13 > 0:03:14for their big festival weekend.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17Fields, Alan. Have you been down at the fields recently?

0:03:17 > 0:03:22- Hopefully in the next ten days or so...- Right.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25They hope their country music and vintage tractor festival

0:03:25 > 0:03:29will entice enthusiasts from all over Ireland and beyond.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32Where are we with the tractor numbers?

0:03:32 > 0:03:35This guy from Scotland has registered.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39He has three tractors, and this other one from Scotland has enquired as well.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42- I've a tractor coming from Iceland, too.- Oh, very good.

0:03:42 > 0:03:46But only farmers who drive a particular type of tractor are welcome.

0:03:46 > 0:03:51Your Ford, your John Deere, your New Holland,

0:03:51 > 0:03:53leave them all home, they are not wanted,

0:03:53 > 0:03:55the modern Massey, leave her at home.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57If she ain't red, keep her in the shed.

0:03:57 > 0:03:58Keep them all in the shed,

0:03:58 > 0:04:01pre '86 Fergusons only.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09Hopefully, the field we're standing in now,

0:04:09 > 0:04:12there will be at least 1,000 tractors, plus.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15And within 15 to 20 minutes that 30-acre field will turn

0:04:15 > 0:04:17from a nice gold colour to pure brown,

0:04:17 > 0:04:21with the soil being overturned with the tractors working it.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23The weekend will also offer farmers the chance

0:04:23 > 0:04:26to swap their wellies for their best jiving shoes.

0:04:26 > 0:04:28A big weekend of country music.

0:04:28 > 0:04:33Ritchie Remo is performing, Jim Devine.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35When the farmer lands here,

0:04:35 > 0:04:37he has no call to go home until Monday morning.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39But the music isn't the festival's main draw.

0:04:39 > 0:04:43The organisers are hoping to break two world records

0:04:43 > 0:04:45involving vintage Ferguson tractors.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49The first record of the day is going to be the Massey Ferguson logo,

0:04:49 > 0:04:55and we need 500-plus Fergusons to make the Ferguson logo

0:04:55 > 0:04:59and when that takes place, then the main world record is going to take place on the Saturday,

0:04:59 > 0:05:04and we will have 1,000-plus tractors in this field, fingers crossed,

0:05:04 > 0:05:06tilling the ground,

0:05:06 > 0:05:08they have to all work for a minimum of 15 minutes.

0:05:08 > 0:05:10If they are to break it,

0:05:10 > 0:05:13they would be bettering their own record, set two years ago,

0:05:13 > 0:05:17which was an emotional experience for organiser Alan.

0:05:17 > 0:05:22We got out on that field and had 726 tractors behind us...

0:05:24 > 0:05:27..when I got off my tractor and walked up to my girlfriend,

0:05:27 > 0:05:31and I just cried like a wean, it was that emotional.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34I never had a feeling like it in me life.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46The Whitecross festival will be a chance

0:05:46 > 0:05:49for 17-year-old Dungiven girl Chloe

0:05:49 > 0:05:52to take a well-earned break from her hectic schedule.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55There is no stop. It's go, go, go from day to day.

0:05:55 > 0:05:56Even if it is hail, rain, snow,

0:05:56 > 0:05:58you are up from half three in the morning

0:05:58 > 0:06:01and that is maybe you through until seven o'clock at night.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03We just enjoy what we do.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06Like, I love it. Like, I could never change.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09I'm a country girl at heart and that's just that.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16The festival will be a chance for her

0:06:16 > 0:06:18to indulge in her greatest passion.

0:06:18 > 0:06:20I have always been a tractor girl, like.

0:06:20 > 0:06:24Like, at silage time, I am like a wean in a toy shop.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31There is nowhere Chloe would rather be

0:06:31 > 0:06:34than in the cab of her vintage Massey.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38There is no better feeling than sitting on the tractor, cruising about the roads,

0:06:38 > 0:06:41and looking around you and seeing people you meet on other tractors.

0:06:41 > 0:06:43"My tractor is better than yours."

0:06:43 > 0:06:45It is just great craic, like.

0:06:45 > 0:06:47There's no better feeling than being in a tractor.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50Like, I would pick a tractor any day over a car.

0:06:51 > 0:06:55Such is Chloe's love for her Massey Ferguson, she's taken it indoors.

0:06:56 > 0:06:59I have this, now, on my wall about a year ago and I was just...

0:06:59 > 0:07:03It looked too bare whenever I was lying in bed at night and I said,

0:07:03 > 0:07:04"Do you know what? I need something on it."

0:07:04 > 0:07:07And it just clicked in my head, I says, "I want a Massey poster."

0:07:07 > 0:07:11The first day I got it I had it plastered on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13You would not think a 17-year-old would have this in her room,

0:07:13 > 0:07:16but I'm not just any ordinary 17-year-old girl.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20I am a tractor-mad, in the brain,

0:07:20 > 0:07:2117-year-old girl.

0:07:28 > 0:07:33Chloe's 1969 Massey 135 is always kept spick and span.

0:07:34 > 0:07:38This is my... The Wee Red Lady, as I call her, and

0:07:38 > 0:07:40my pride and joy.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42This is the polish I get for her, Mr Sheen.

0:07:42 > 0:07:46It is basically furniture polish but it brings her up in some shine.

0:07:46 > 0:07:51Chloe is hoping her little Red Lady will shine brightly at the world-record attempt.

0:07:51 > 0:07:56I really want to take the Wee Red Lady down to be part of this world record.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59There's everything I want, there's tractors, there's jiving at it,

0:07:59 > 0:08:01and it is just going to be unreal.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03Roll on three weeks' time.

0:08:06 > 0:08:07# It takes a special breed

0:08:07 > 0:08:10# To be a truck-driving man

0:08:10 > 0:08:14# And a steady hand to pull that load behind... #

0:08:14 > 0:08:18In Roscommon, Stephen Regan is also preparing his tractor

0:08:18 > 0:08:21for the world-record attempt but his 1956 Ferguson T20

0:08:21 > 0:08:24needs a little more than some spit and polish.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27Now, this is the Ferguson Hunter we want to do up.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29As Grandad used to call it, the Grey Horse.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31She was nicknamed the Grey Horse

0:08:31 > 0:08:33because she was the first replacement after a horse.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35There was nothing else around at the time.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38And if it was a horse it would've been put down long ago.

0:08:38 > 0:08:42As you can see, this tractor has parked up the last ten years, so it is.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45It needs a fair bit of work.

0:08:45 > 0:08:46There is a fair bit of water in the oil.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49As you can see, it is not a great combination.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52The tank is leaking. I can see the radiator is also leaking.

0:08:52 > 0:08:53The fan belt has ravelled.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56The exhaust doesn't look too healthy.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58There is no seat in the tractor.

0:08:58 > 0:09:00The steering wheel is a bit ate away.

0:09:00 > 0:09:02Accelerator disconnected. It needs four new tyres.

0:09:02 > 0:09:06She needs a full re-spray and an engine rebuild and a radiator.

0:09:06 > 0:09:07It is a monumental job

0:09:07 > 0:09:11but it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Stephen.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13Country music and tractors together

0:09:13 > 0:09:17and everything to do with farming all under the one heading, in one field.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20So I said, "Damn it, I'll do it, like."

0:09:20 > 0:09:23Surely to God there'll be good-looking women in it, too, like.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25You don't know. Might get a future wife.

0:09:33 > 0:09:35There's only one thing Stephen loves more than his tractors

0:09:35 > 0:09:38and that's country music nights out.

0:09:38 > 0:09:39I love the country music.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42I love going to see the likes of Patrick Feeney and Michael English especially.

0:09:42 > 0:09:43They've great lively music.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46And Lisa McHugh. She's easy on the eye, too, so she is.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48He is not much of a dancer.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51I love dancing, but my steering is a bit off,

0:09:51 > 0:09:53so I just keep it nice and steady, keep in first gear.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58And he won't have time to learn because he has got a tractor to fix.

0:10:00 > 0:10:04Sure it needs doing and you'll battle through it.

0:10:07 > 0:10:10Given the difficulty of loading it onto the trailer...

0:10:10 > 0:10:11How's it looking at the back there?

0:10:11 > 0:10:15..having a fully functional tractor in just four weeks

0:10:15 > 0:10:16might be a little ambitious.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18You were going too fast. You were going too fast.

0:10:18 > 0:10:22It will be all right. Pull it up there, it'll be all right.

0:10:22 > 0:10:23Always my fault, never his.

0:10:26 > 0:10:30But Stephen's Uncle Tom seems to think that it'll all be grand.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32Mechanically it is OK but it's just...

0:10:32 > 0:10:35Everything you see that is wrong, I'd say, is nearly all that is wrong,

0:10:35 > 0:10:39except maybe do the brakes and a few things and tyres.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41And, of course, we'll have to re-spray it.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51# Mowing, lifting Sowing, bailing

0:10:51 > 0:10:53# Drawing, hauling... #

0:10:53 > 0:10:55Farmers' favourite Ritchie Remo

0:10:55 > 0:10:58has a distinctly agricultural take on country music.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03And as befits a man who sings about all things tractor,

0:11:03 > 0:11:07he's performing at this year's Whitecross world-record attempt.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10# Oh, hit the deck and pray that she goes all the way... #

0:11:12 > 0:11:14But even though he's the entertainment,

0:11:14 > 0:11:18Ritchie can't turn up without a Ferguson of his own.

0:11:18 > 0:11:19The plan was, originally,

0:11:19 > 0:11:22I was going to take the Massey out of the Hit The Diff video

0:11:22 > 0:11:25but that doesn't actually qualify for the world-record attempt

0:11:25 > 0:11:27because it is not pre '86.

0:11:27 > 0:11:28But if you live in Claudy,

0:11:28 > 0:11:31you're never more than half a mile away from a vintage tractor.

0:11:31 > 0:11:33Hello, Alan. it's Ritchie Remo.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36Yes, Richard. Are you all right?

0:11:36 > 0:11:38Not too bad, Alan. I'll tell you what it is,

0:11:38 > 0:11:42I'm needing a tractor, basically, that's pre '86 for this world-record attempt.

0:11:42 > 0:11:46- Yes.- Would you have anything about you there?

0:11:46 > 0:11:50I have a 1949 TVO Ferguson.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53You could eat your dinner off her.

0:11:53 > 0:11:55That is great. That is what I need, anyway.

0:11:55 > 0:11:58I'm needing something that can take me that length.

0:11:58 > 0:11:59Is she going well enough too?

0:11:59 > 0:12:03She is going like a new spanner.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05That's brilliant.

0:12:13 > 0:12:16- How is she going? - Well, Richard. Hi, how are you?

0:12:16 > 0:12:17Not so bad. Is this it here?

0:12:17 > 0:12:19This is the one I told you you could eat your dinner off.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22- She's a good one. - She's shining like a new pin.

0:12:22 > 0:12:23She will be a great job for it.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25She is my pride and joy.

0:12:25 > 0:12:29- If I give you this, you will look after her?- I will look after her.

0:12:29 > 0:12:31I might even get a fish supper and eat it off the bonnet here.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34I am glad to get her out, as long as he takes care of her, now.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37I would not want to see you doing her any harm.

0:12:37 > 0:12:40He was used to these ones that hit the diff now,

0:12:40 > 0:12:41but this is a lot older

0:12:41 > 0:12:46and there's not the same poke in these as there was in the one in Hit The Diff.

0:12:46 > 0:12:47It may not have the same poke

0:12:47 > 0:12:50but Ritchie can still give it some welly.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54# Driving all night Too many miles to go

0:12:54 > 0:12:59# Pedal to the metal Listen to the radio

0:13:01 > 0:13:06# I've got three day to get from Cheyenne to San Antone

0:13:06 > 0:13:11# That's the life of the cowboy ridin' the rodeo

0:13:11 > 0:13:14# Yeah, that's the life of the cowboy, ridin' the rodeo. #

0:13:14 > 0:13:15With his vintage tractor sorted,

0:13:15 > 0:13:17Ritchie will lead a convoy from Claudy and Dungiven

0:13:17 > 0:13:20to the world-record attempt in Donegal.

0:13:24 > 0:13:25How did you enjoy that?

0:13:25 > 0:13:28Oh, she's going like a clock. She's a great yoke altogether.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31I am looking forward to leading this convoy in her now.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37In Roscommon, Stephen is hoping his 1956 Ferguson

0:13:37 > 0:13:39will be ready in time to take part

0:13:39 > 0:13:41but the festival is only around the corner

0:13:41 > 0:13:43and his tractor has seen better days.

0:13:43 > 0:13:47Today is Monday, and tractor run is on Friday, so it is.

0:13:48 > 0:13:50So it is not really looking good for us now.

0:13:52 > 0:13:54Miracles could happen, you never know.

0:13:54 > 0:13:56Going to Knock, now, and say a couple of prayers.

0:13:56 > 0:14:00Divine intervention may be Stephen's only hope at this stage.

0:14:01 > 0:14:06# So take a look at these hardworking hands

0:14:06 > 0:14:09# Ain't they the measure of any man?

0:14:09 > 0:14:13# They do the best that they can

0:14:13 > 0:14:15# With what they have... #

0:14:15 > 0:14:18There is a lot of problems as you go along.

0:14:18 > 0:14:20There is just always something going wrong.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23When it comes to tractor repairs, it looks like Stephen's on his own.

0:14:25 > 0:14:27You can't help me with this brake.

0:14:27 > 0:14:30I know. This is getting out of hand.

0:14:30 > 0:14:34If there was already pressure, now the flood gates have opened.

0:14:34 > 0:14:36That's all I have, is one sandbag to keep the water out.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42There's a flood in Donegal, too.

0:14:42 > 0:14:45The typical Irish summer is playing havoc with plans

0:14:45 > 0:14:47for the world-record attempt.

0:14:47 > 0:14:49Every one of these posts is in a lot of water.

0:14:49 > 0:14:52Well, there's just a lot of tracks there and stuff, so...

0:14:52 > 0:14:55These tramlines hold the water the weather badly, but...

0:14:55 > 0:14:57With thousands of people expected to turn up,

0:16:06 > 0:16:09it's time to pack the most important accessory for the weekend.

0:16:17 > 0:16:20# You can take me out of the country

0:16:21 > 0:16:24# But you can't take the country out of me... #

0:16:27 > 0:16:31With Chloe's little Red Lady safely on the back of a low-loader...

0:16:31 > 0:16:33# Keep it in the middle of the road

0:16:33 > 0:16:36# Let's keep it in the middle of the road... #

0:16:56 > 0:16:58# On the straight and narrow

0:16:58 > 0:17:00# Stay together Just like a bow and arrow

0:17:09 > 0:17:11I'm a long way off, like.

0:17:42 > 0:17:46the bonnet, and he just has the wheels primed at the moment.

0:17:48 > 0:17:50But all this effort will be worth it

0:17:50 > 0:17:53for a tractor that's been in the family for 60 years.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58I still remember hauling turf for Grandad from the bog

0:17:58 > 0:18:01and seeing him shaking out here.

0:18:26 > 0:18:29The likes of the exhaust, the fuel tank on, and get her straight.

0:18:29 > 0:18:32As Stephen waits on his refurbished engine,

0:19:30 > 0:19:34As Jimmy Buckley finishes his set, the girls finally get their tent up

0:19:34 > 0:19:37but it's just as well you don't need a dance floor at this festival

0:19:37 > 0:19:39to have a good time.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42# If I could I'd build a wall around old Donegal
