:00:10. > :00:27.Families. Friends. A city. A nation united in grief. God's mercy and

:00:28. > :00:42.good this... On Friday night, a terrible tragedy

:00:43. > :00:48.struck the Clutha Bar in Glasgow's city centre. Since then, while

:00:49. > :00:53.emergency services have battled to first rescue and then recover the

:00:54. > :01:00.victims, Scotland has been in shock, in mourning. Tonight, we look at the

:01:01. > :01:10.last 72 hours which have both devastated and united nation.

:01:11. > :01:19.A Friday at the end of the month. For many, it is payday. Christmas is

:01:20. > :01:26.less than a month away. The festivities, together with the start

:01:27. > :01:34.of the St Andrews Day weekend, means Friday is a busier night than usual

:01:35. > :01:39.in the city. The Clutha Bar on Stockwell Street has been a Glasgow

:01:40. > :01:43.landmark for almost 200 years, a traditional pub, it has played host

:01:44. > :01:48.over the years to bands and musicians such as Gerry Rafferty and

:01:49. > :01:54.Billy Connelly. On Friday night, Esperanza were playing. Bar owner

:01:55. > :02:00.Saverio Petri was expecting a busy night. Esperanza have a large

:02:01. > :02:05.following in labs go and I was looking forward to seeing what would

:02:06. > :02:12.happen. Brothers Michael and Billy were looking forward to going out. I

:02:13. > :02:18.saw Esperanza were playing. I am friends with the manager and a

:02:19. > :02:25.couple of people who also like them. It was great, I thought that would

:02:26. > :02:29.be a good thing. I contacted Billy to see if you wanted to go out in

:02:30. > :02:36.the afternoon and then go and see Esperanza in the Clutha Bar. 945 TM,

:02:37. > :02:43.the band came on. Everyone was cheering. A really good atmosphere

:02:44. > :02:51.in the pub. On the other side of Glasgow, a police helicopter,

:02:52. > :02:55.callsign Sierra Papa 99 is on shift. It is based on the north side of the

:02:56. > :03:02.River Clyde which has served Scotland for 11 years. A familiar

:03:03. > :03:06.sight above the city streets, this easy 135 model is a favourite of

:03:07. > :03:14.emergency services worldwide. The helicopter's exact flight path on

:03:15. > :03:18.Friday night is unknown but at ten o'clock Sierra Papa 99 is flying

:03:19. > :03:25.over the Merchant City area of blogs go. According to one witness, all

:03:26. > :03:29.does not seem well. It was totally unusual for me to be in the car park

:03:30. > :03:37.and when I got to the sixth floor, I heard a really loud mechanical

:03:38. > :03:42.noise, like a car misfiring but 100 times louder. I looked above me and

:03:43. > :03:47.found myself cowering down because it looked directly above me. I

:03:48. > :03:52.looked above me, behind me and then straight in front and at 11 o'clock

:03:53. > :03:59.that kind of direction, I could a helicopter. The revellers in the

:04:00. > :04:05.Clutha Bar below remain oblivious to what is going on. The band,

:04:06. > :04:11.Esperanza, are in full swing. The band were coming up to having a

:04:12. > :04:17.break. The pub was as busy as the pub gets. At the time I remember

:04:18. > :04:20.saying, Jesus Christ, there is a helicopter coming straight for me.

:04:21. > :04:25.It was only the following day when my colleague recounted what I said,

:04:26. > :04:30.that I said there was a helicopter about to crash into the car park,

:04:31. > :04:35.and I hung up and I saw this terrible form of the helicopter

:04:36. > :04:39.tumbling nose over tail. It fell beyond the residential flats in

:04:40. > :04:44.front of me. That was the last I saw of it. Those in the bar below

:04:45. > :04:50.seconds away from becoming part of a disaster which shocks the world. I

:04:51. > :04:56.was in the pub with four mates of mine. One of them went outside for a

:04:57. > :05:05.fag break so I joined him. Fire David Traill there was a ska band

:05:06. > :05:13.on. -- there was a ska band on. There was a whoosh noise. I heard an

:05:14. > :05:17.engine above me, I looked above me, it was getting louder and louder. I

:05:18. > :05:26.spotted a helicopter falling from the sky. Within seconds, News begins

:05:27. > :05:33.spreading on social media. I heard a very loud bang. There was smoke. We

:05:34. > :05:39.were laughing that the band had made the roof come down. They carried on

:05:40. > :05:45.playing. At first, I thought the speakers had possibly blown. But

:05:46. > :05:50.then I looked around and the cloud of dust suddenly took over the whole

:05:51. > :05:56.pub. Someone started screaming and the whole pub filled with dust. You

:05:57. > :06:01.could not see anything. The ceiling had fallen onto the bar, in the

:06:02. > :06:06.central bit of the pub will stop that is when I realised things was

:06:07. > :06:15.serious. You could not breathe. Every time you took a breath, it was

:06:16. > :06:24.caught in your mouth. I saw what appeared to be a flash. There was a

:06:25. > :06:28.loud noise. I heard a crash, bang, and indescribable noise. My first

:06:29. > :06:35.instinct was that was a door slamming but obviously, it was

:06:36. > :06:42.louder than that. The pub was plunged into darkness. Rubble

:06:43. > :06:49.started to fall. A sort of bitter silence. I turned to my left hand

:06:50. > :06:53.side and saw that the ceiling had collapsed onto the bar. A second

:06:54. > :06:57.later I turned back around and it seemed like the band were still

:06:58. > :07:03.playing but this was a matter of microseconds. The band obviously

:07:04. > :07:06.realised something had happened. One of the singers said, I told you I

:07:07. > :07:12.would bring the roof down, obviously, completely unaware of

:07:13. > :07:19.what had happened. The whole ceiling had collapsed in on itself and a

:07:20. > :07:27.gantry on the bar had also collapsed in on itself. There was an initial

:07:28. > :07:39.bout of screaming. I was hit by some flying debris which knocked me down

:07:40. > :07:47.behind the bar. At this point... There was debris falling all around

:07:48. > :07:55.me. There was a huge ball of dust. It seemed as if that helped. We

:07:56. > :07:59.could see what was going on. When I looked over to the left-hand side of

:08:00. > :08:03.the pub, it was almost as if it was not there. There was no left-hand

:08:04. > :08:10.side of the pub. I could not see anything past the middle of the bar.

:08:11. > :08:14.There was debris and carnage. I went and I'm sure there were other people

:08:15. > :08:21.as well, I'm certain of that, and opened the doors. As I approached

:08:22. > :08:27.the door, I was about ten feet from the door and I could see my brother

:08:28. > :08:30.was standing at the door. Whilst I was holding the door I saw my

:08:31. > :08:37.brother will stop we were getting people out. Just saying, everything

:08:38. > :08:45.will be OK, it will be fine, because it was at that time. It was getting

:08:46. > :08:51.more and more dusty. I stepped inside to see if there was anyone

:08:52. > :08:58.still around. I cannot recall if I was shouting, is everyone OK, I

:08:59. > :09:05.cannot recall the time remember -- but I remember it was quiet. I could

:09:06. > :09:12.see the bar had collapsed. I looked over to the right-hand where we were

:09:13. > :09:16.standing and I could not see anyone. I am almost satisfied that everyone

:09:17. > :09:24.in the area where we were standing had vacated the building and was

:09:25. > :09:28.safe. And then I turned around. You knew it was something really

:09:29. > :09:33.serious, some think horrific and serious had happened. We macro I

:09:34. > :09:38.could see people coming out of the pub is covered in blood and covered

:09:39. > :09:45.in dust. I saw the two chaps lying on the floor, on the ground. The

:09:46. > :09:49.structure of the bar was kind of placed over them from the waist

:09:50. > :09:54.down. Both chaps were lying there. The chap nearest to me was lying

:09:55. > :10:04.with his eyes wide open, his arms stretched out. And... I thought they

:10:05. > :10:09.had passed away, they looked like mannequins, I feared the worst for

:10:10. > :10:13.them. I turned around and my brother was there. I shouted for some help.

:10:14. > :10:21.There was another chap who I don't know. It was great that he helped.

:10:22. > :10:25.We went over to the gantry part of the bar, or some kind of structure

:10:26. > :10:31.that seemed to be on top of the chaps. We lifted it up without any

:10:32. > :10:37.thoughts or hesitations, this is just what we need to do. I could not

:10:38. > :10:41.tell you how heavy it was. I have no recollection. We just lifted the

:10:42. > :10:49.struck up and shouted for somebody to help and dragged the chap out. I

:10:50. > :10:57.think that person was conscious. He was moaning. I heard him make a moan

:10:58. > :11:03.and that was fantastic. I was relieved and I thought, the chap is

:11:04. > :11:09.still alive, that is great. People formed a human chain, side-by-side

:11:10. > :11:19.to help pull injured people out and just the person from one another to

:11:20. > :11:27.each other. There was a second person under him. That person did

:11:28. > :11:35.not look to me, did not look conscious. He was face down. I

:11:36. > :11:40.lifted the structure up and someone came and dragged the chap away. I

:11:41. > :11:46.have no idea who it was. I do not even learned what the person looked

:11:47. > :11:52.like -- I do not even remember what the person looked like. That person

:11:53. > :11:58.may have been one of the fatalities, you do not know? I do not know but I

:11:59. > :12:08.would not like to think that it was. Because... I would not like to think

:12:09. > :12:14.that it was because that would be... That would be difficult. That would

:12:15. > :12:20.be very difficult. I was in the immediate vicinity of the pub. About

:12:21. > :12:24.ten people, half of them struggling to be conscious or unconscious and

:12:25. > :12:30.the other four or five with varying degrees of wounds or injuries. It is

:12:31. > :12:36.so soon after that it is hard to recollect exact Lee and because of

:12:37. > :12:40.the dust and the determination for people to do the human thing before

:12:41. > :12:49.the emergency services got here. There is blood on your shirt. Yeah,

:12:50. > :12:55.it is not mine. Trapped in the pub, sisters Nancy

:12:56. > :13:01.and Ann feared for their lives. I thought I was going to die. I

:13:02. > :13:07.thought, where is my sister? I was old and I was screaming for my

:13:08. > :13:15.sister. -- I was pulled out. I thought she was dead. I thought my

:13:16. > :13:20.sister was dead. She is not going to make it. At one point, I started to

:13:21. > :13:26.cuddle the guy in front of me will stop I said, what is your name? He

:13:27. > :13:36.said George. I am screaming for my sister. I became aware of her voice.

:13:37. > :13:40.She was screaming, my sister. When I heard that, I thought, thank God,

:13:41. > :13:46.she is alive, I am alive, unbelievable. People were just doing

:13:47. > :13:51.what they could, they were helping to bring people out, helping to

:13:52. > :14:00.comfort people who were still trapped but it was the calmness

:14:01. > :14:04.which was quite surprisingly. It is not something I have ever seen

:14:05. > :14:10.before, it is not something I want to see again. Within minutes, the

:14:11. > :14:16.emergency services are on the scene. We have got 125 firefighters, not

:14:17. > :14:25.only working outside, but inside the building. We are carrying out

:14:26. > :14:28.rescues. The art in the process of making the building stable, it is

:14:29. > :14:31.very unsafe. But we are carrying out extensive work, and we will be here

:14:32. > :14:49.for as long as it takes. I was made aware of the situation

:14:50. > :14:56.quickly. I saw some people who were very seriously injured. I saw some

:14:57. > :15:04.people who were showing no signs of life. They said it was a helicopter,

:15:05. > :15:12.I was incredulous, I thought, it is not, it is this feeling that has

:15:13. > :15:20.collapsed. Why would that happen? As I was walking past, I saw what I

:15:21. > :15:26.thought was a piece of wood sticking out, with a yellow reflective part,

:15:27. > :15:31.and I still thought, that is a rafter, something to do with the

:15:32. > :15:34.structure of the building. I was not prepared to believe it was a

:15:35. > :15:36.helicopter and that would happen on a Friday night. They do not crash

:15:37. > :15:50.into pubs. Breaking news. We are hearing from

:15:51. > :15:58.our colleagues in Scotland that there are reports that a helicopter

:15:59. > :16:05.has crashed into the roof of a pub. As news spreads, it is not just the

:16:06. > :16:09.emergency services who respond. I had been to a dinner dance with my

:16:10. > :16:15.wife, I came home and switched on the midnight news. There it was. As

:16:16. > :16:21.was to be the story again throughout the night, your first belief is,

:16:22. > :16:31.this cannot be true, this cannot be true. But you listen and you think.

:16:32. > :16:40.It is. It is a helicopter, and it is a police one. When I saw that, I

:16:41. > :16:45.thought, right, this is it, this is what you do your job for. I got a

:16:46. > :16:52.phone call from my son, he said, get on your telly. I put on one of the

:16:53. > :16:55.news channels, and it said a helicopter had come down. Another

:16:56. > :17:03.phone call said it was a police helicopter. It was a difference of

:17:04. > :17:12.20 miles an hour then, I grabbed my stuff and I ran into the car. I went

:17:13. > :17:22.down, quaking, to the barrier. There were the constables. I said, what do

:17:23. > :17:34.you want me to do? The back-end of a helicopter sticking up through the

:17:35. > :17:41.roof. I was watching it in the eyes of some of the cops, and this was a

:17:42. > :17:46.crusade, not a job. No matter what it took, they were getting in there,

:17:47. > :17:50.to get their folk back. Reverend Whitley goes to the hospitals, where

:17:51. > :17:57.more than 30 people have now been taken. It expected there to be high

:17:58. > :18:09.emotion, and instead, it was calm. It was not shocked, it was just a

:18:10. > :18:17.calm, how is it that, out of the clear sky, when you are in somewhere

:18:18. > :18:24.safe, inside a building, your whole world changes? From Reverend

:18:25. > :18:29.Gilbraith, spiritual concerns turn to practical matters. I said to the

:18:30. > :18:34.hotels, have you got any tea and coffee? Within 15 minutes, the

:18:35. > :18:41.holiday inn had tea and coffee and flasks. There were muffins and all

:18:42. > :18:48.the rest of it. People were appearing from Asda and Tesco, it

:18:49. > :18:54.was like feeding the 5000. Within a matter of hours, the generosity was

:18:55. > :19:00.amazing. At the hospitals, stories of shock and confusion. Full of

:19:01. > :19:05.contradictions, one man said, I was standing in the door, and the next

:19:06. > :19:15.thing I knew, I was lying on the ground outside. Very strange. As

:19:16. > :19:24.dawn breaks over Glasgow, the city faces the full extent of the

:19:25. > :19:29.tragedy. All of us have seen over the last few hours the speed and

:19:30. > :19:35.effectiveness of the mobilisation of the emergency services in dealing

:19:36. > :19:41.with this. We have also heard of the instinctive courage of ordinary

:19:42. > :19:48.Glaswegians, who have helped their fellow citizens. This is a black day

:19:49. > :19:55.for Glasgow and for Scotland. But it is also St Andrews Day. It is a day

:19:56. > :20:01.we can take pride and courage in how we respond to adversity and tragedy.

:20:02. > :20:06.That response from our emergency services and from ordinary citizens

:20:07. > :20:11.has been exceptional. Then, the first official news of casualties.

:20:12. > :20:24.32 injured people were taken by ambulance from the scene. Sadly, I

:20:25. > :20:31.can also confirm one fatality. At first, we heard there was one. That

:20:32. > :20:34.raised hope, because we knew a helicopter would have a crew of

:20:35. > :20:42.three, and if only one fatality had occurred, that set your pulse

:20:43. > :20:49.racing, gosh, the other two might have survived. That went on for

:20:50. > :20:53.quite a long time. Hope rises. But not for long. Soon comes the news

:20:54. > :21:05.that everybody has been fearing. We can now confirm that the number

:21:06. > :21:13.of fatalities involved in this incident has risen to eight.

:21:14. > :21:23.The city, the nation, begins to mourn.

:21:24. > :21:30.As the tributes grow, many of the injured return to the scene. The

:21:31. > :21:41.cold light of day bringing with it a stark reality. I have come out of

:21:42. > :21:54.hospital, there was a man on the news, he was next to me. He was one

:21:55. > :22:01.of the dead. For me, it became personal at 6:30pm last night. I was

:22:02. > :22:07.hoping I would get home, because I had been out of the house since 7am.

:22:08. > :22:12.I had missed 19 calls, a lot of them came from my sons. They had been

:22:13. > :22:21.getting contacted by the family. The name was given, and I realised this

:22:22. > :22:28.is no longer be doing what I should do as a chaplain, it had moved to a

:22:29. > :22:36.different level. It was Kirsty Nelis who had been aboard the helicopter.

:22:37. > :22:39.She had not survived. News of other confirmed victims begins to reach

:22:40. > :22:45.loved ones, yet more bodies remain trapped. One man, his father a

:22:46. > :22:50.regular, fears of a helicopter crash on his bus journey home. I was

:22:51. > :23:01.sitting and this man behind me said, on his bus journey home. I was

:23:02. > :23:09.were only four of us, he said, have you seen this? I said, what's that?

:23:10. > :23:15.He said, look at this. They helicopter has crashed into the

:23:16. > :23:26.Clutha Bar. Right away, I went, oh, my God. I went, my dad. I said, my

:23:27. > :23:38.dad is in there. He said, you are joking. I said, he is dead. I said,

:23:39. > :23:43.listen, I just know. After two days, he finally here's what he has been

:23:44. > 2:55:59dreading the most. He received a phone call if you hours ago? Yes,

2:56:00 > 2:55:59about an hour ago. The police. They confirmed they are bringing to

2:56:00 > 2:55:59people have # eight are bringing to people out. I have to go there to

2:56:00 > 2:55:59identify my dad. So far, nine people have been confirmed as having died

2:56:00 > 2:55:59in Friday's crash. Already, the investigation into what caused the

2:56:00 > 2:55:59tragedy has begun. Cancers, though, will not come any time scene. --

2:56:00 > 2:55:59answers. For the families, the weighting will be painful. Now, it

2:56:00 > 2:55:59is a time of grieving and reflecting and supporting.

2:56:00 > 2:55:59Candles lit to remember the dead. Thoughts and prayers for the

2:56:00 > 2:55:59injured. We do not end this day in despair and loss. Our and set is

2:56:00 > 2:55:59that we stand defiant, and that our great and vibrant and irrepressible

2:56:00 > 2:55:59city shall stand together with our suffering ones and, hand-in-hand, go

2:56:00 > 2:55:59forward, into the light. Into the light. That defiance, that

2:56:00 > 2:55:59togetherness, shown so clearly by so many. I have just left the air Anne

2:56:00 > 2:55:59Boleyn space to come here and talk to the flat paramedics, who knew

2:56:00 > 2:55:59those involved. They are deeply upset with what has happened, but we

2:56:00 > 2:55:59are working with them to provide what support we can. I have come

2:56:00 > 2:55:59from the Cathedral and I have lit a candle to say a prayer for the

2:56:00 > 2:55:59people that lost their life. On Friday night, Lasko experienced a

2:56:00 > 2:55:59tragedy which reverberated around the world -- Glasgow. It will

2:56:00 > 2:55:59continue to mourn and not soon forget. Yet a tragedy which many

2:56:00 > 2:55:59feel has allowed a side of the city to shine through as never before. It

2:56:00 > 2:55:59beggars belief, the heroism. These are heroes, these are true heroes,

2:56:00 > 2:55:59the people that put themselves at risk to try to get people that they

2:56:00 > 2:55:59do not know out of a pub to see bodies being dragged out. I cannot

2:56:00 > 2:55:59thank the people of Glasgow in us. When that happened on Friday, nobody

2:56:00 > 2:55:59had any regard for their own safety. It was a collective effort, a lot of

2:56:00 > 2:55:59people helping, everybody that needed to be helped. I people that

2:56:00 > 2:55:59could help them. The thing that will live with me will be the images of

2:56:00 > 2:55:59the helicopter falling but also the people running towards the sea. That

2:56:00 > 2:55:59will be with me until my dying day. It summed up Glasgow in seconds.

2:56:00 > 2:55:59Glaswegians respond to everything with their heart first, with their

2:56:00 > 2:55:59heart before any other part. Yes, there are times when that can be

2:56:00 > 2:55:59unfortunate, but in a situation like this, it is so typical that they

2:56:00 > 2:55:59respond without any hesitation. If somebody needs help, you help them,

2:56:00 > 2:56:00that is the rules.
