:00:00. > :00:14.the Tower of David, to find a community of squatters who have made

:00:15. > :00:18.it their home. This is the Tower of David in the

:00:19. > :00:22.heart of Caracas. It was designed in the 1980s and was supposed to become

:00:23. > :00:25.the centre of Venezuelan's banking industry. Halfway through building

:00:26. > :00:40.it, the project was scrapped when money ran out. Now, it is a monument

:00:41. > :00:49.to Venezuelan's crumbling economy. ``Venezuela. Today, it is home to

:00:50. > :00:52.over 2000 squatters, a kind of vertical slalom. They have

:00:53. > :00:55.transformed the tower into a thriving and ordered society. ``

:00:56. > :01:17.slum. It is now a community where people

:01:18. > :01:31.live, work, and raise their families in safety.

:01:32. > :01:38.I spent two weeks in the tower. How could these people have built a

:01:39. > :01:45.century in the ruins of a skyscraper? In one of the most

:02:04. > :02:10.When President Hugo Chavez died a year ago, he left behind a turbulent

:02:11. > :02:15.nation. His successor, Nicolas Maduro, has been struggling to keep

:02:16. > :02:21.it grip on Venezuelan ever since. `` keep a grip. As well as food

:02:22. > :02:26.shortages and massive inflation, it is one of the kidnapping and murder

:02:27. > :02:31.capitals of the world. Seven years ago, a group of squatters saw this

:02:32. > :02:34.derelict half built skyscraper as they do it yourself solution to

:02:35. > :03:06.Venezuelan 's chronic housing shortage.

:03:07. > :18:24.With housing in Caracas in such sort supply, there is not much

:18:25. > :18:25.opportunity. The residents are on a waiting list and every square foot

:18:26. > :19:05.is in demand. But millions of people across

:19:06. > :19:10.Venezuela see things differently. They regard the government's

:19:11. > :19:15.socialist policies as the cause of the country's troubles. And many are

:19:16. > :19:21.calling on the President to resign. Clashes between the protesters and

:19:22. > :23:13.the police have left many dead on both sides.
