:00:12. > :00:19.block the latest headlines from BBC News. The German Chancellor, Angela

:00:20. > :00:27.Merkel, has arrived in Turkey where he visited a migrant camp to see the

:00:28. > :00:31.conditions people are living in the. As President Obama prepares to visit

:00:32. > :00:36.Germany there have been protests there against a trade deal as one of

:00:37. > :00:43.his landmark policies on his last the inland and he cold on young

:00:44. > :00:46.people to turn away from cynicism. A university professor in Bangladesh

:00:47. > :00:52.has been killed. He was attacked with machetes. There has been a

:00:53. > :00:59.spate of killings of secular atheist loggers and writers in recent

:01:00. > :01:05.months. The first voyage of a solar Wayne on a trip around the world is

:01:06. > :01:14.about to complete the ninth leg of its journey. At ten o'clock we will

:01:15. > :01:22.have a full round-up of the day is news but first there has been a new

:01:23. > :01:24.round of violence to the West Bank. In some cases the attackers have

:01:25. > :01:33.been young teenagers armed with kitchen knives. But Gush Etzion

:01:34. > :01:40.junction has been one site of many attacks and it is used by many

:01:41. > :01:45.sectors. It used to be a ways Palestinians would also shop work

:01:46. > :01:48.but now people are frightened. Being the could cost them dear lives. This

:01:49. > :02:31.film contains disturbing images from the start. -- their lives.

:02:32. > :02:54.It just became a trend to get a knife, go out, stab someone.

:02:55. > :02:58.Alistair named protesters have been throwing stones, Israeli soldiers

:02:59. > :03:17.have been fighting back. Armed with whatever weapons they can

:03:18. > :03:26.find, young Palestinians are attacking Israelis. Life suddenly

:03:27. > :03:34.feels much more dangerous. It just became a trend to get a knife, go

:03:35. > :03:36.out, stab someone. The Israeli response is often wheedle and fuels

:03:37. > :03:53.Palestinian anger. -- lethal. There is now an unrelenting cycle of

:03:54. > :03:57.violence. Palestinian protesters have been throwing stones, Israeli

:03:58. > :04:04.soldiers have been fighting back. I've come to the Gush Etzion

:04:05. > :04:10.Junction, a flash point for this upsurge in attacks to see what it

:04:11. > :04:20.can reveal about the future of the Israel/ Palestinian conflict. The

:04:21. > :04:24.Gush Etzion junction is a place with special significance in a

:04:25. > :04:31.decades-old struggle. The roundabout is on the main road between

:04:32. > :04:35.Jerusalem and Hebron. It is in the West Bank which the Palestinians

:04:36. > :04:42.want for an independent state. But this part remains under school is

:04:43. > :04:52.really control. It is a magnet for violence. In the early 20th-century,

:04:53. > :04:59.it Jews bought land here. Infighting with Arab armies in 1948, they were

:05:00. > :05:09.forced out or killed. Jews returned in 1967 after Israel captured the

:05:10. > :05:14.alia and work down to rebuild Kfar Etzion. It was the first settlement

:05:15. > :05:21.in the occupied West Hank after the war. Settlements are Jewish

:05:22. > :05:25.immunities built on occupied land, they are considered illegal under

:05:26. > :05:41.international law but Israel disagrees. Gush Etzion, Hebrew for

:05:42. > :05:44.the Etzion bloc is now larger than the original sites. More than 20,000

:05:45. > :05:50.people live in the original settlements and much of it is ill on

:05:51. > :05:54.confiscated Palestinian land. Today, this junction is one of the few

:05:55. > :06:00.places in the West Bank where Israelis and Alistair means

:06:01. > :06:07.constantly cross parts. My work as a reporter often rings me here and it

:06:08. > :06:15.is often tense. Three years ago three teenaged hitchhikers were

:06:16. > :06:19.kidnapped and murdered nearby. These candles were laid out earlier in a

:06:20. > :06:25.show of grief for the dead Israelis. They spell out their name. Since

:06:26. > :06:32.then there have been striking changes at the roundabout. It looks

:06:33. > :06:37.like a battle ground. As well as soldiers, local settlements have

:06:38. > :06:41.their own security. Daniel, a British Israeli, has recently seen

:06:42. > :06:48.about one doesn't deadly incidents here. At this junction every stone,

:06:49. > :06:52.every flag, every bus stop has seen a terror attack. For some it has

:06:53. > :06:58.ended better meaning we have been able to neutralise the threat before

:06:59. > :07:02.it approached any civilians standing here but unfortunately where we are

:07:03. > :07:07.standing now we lost in two separate attacks to macro civilians. I have

:07:08. > :07:12.seen stuff I would not like to have seen and I would like to forget most

:07:13. > :07:21.of it but it is part and parcel of the job. What kind of people live in

:07:22. > :07:24.the Gush Etzion area? There are people live here with children and

:07:25. > :07:29.there are a small few who are trying to install terror and prevent the

:07:30. > :07:39.Israelis from leading a quiet and peaceful life within the immunities.

:07:40. > :07:44.In the last few months Daniel has been in a constant state of high

:07:45. > :07:49.alert but today seems calm on his patrol until we return to the

:07:50. > :07:58.roundabout. What is on here? We have to get out of the car. Daniel rushes

:07:59. > :08:08.to help a lone soldier checking passengers trying to get them out of

:08:09. > :08:12.date minibus. The Army is imposing tough new restrictions on

:08:13. > :08:20.Palestinians, it says, to prevent attacks. They are not allowed to get

:08:21. > :08:24.out of the junction, in the vicinity of the junction, an encounter like

:08:25. > :08:27.this now can have a lasting effect at on the other hand the soldiers

:08:28. > :08:37.are in a situation where the cannot not do it. We have to do it. At the

:08:38. > :08:43.Gush Etzion junction there is also a large shopping area. The supermarket

:08:44. > :08:47.bustles with Israeli families. It is at the centre of local community

:08:48. > :08:54.life. Alistair means used to be free to visit but now they need the right

:08:55. > :09:02.ID to enter. -- Palestinians used to be free to enter. There was a

:09:03. > :09:10.stabbing outside the door last year. We see on state television video and

:09:11. > :09:15.cartoons calling to become a marker, stab a Jew, stab an Israeli. You do

:09:16. > :09:20.not think it is anything to do with the Israeli occupation with the

:09:21. > :09:24.presence of settlements year? I do not believe that, it has been

:09:25. > :09:29.carried out by Palestinian Muslims and when they look into the

:09:30. > :09:33.assailants background they see a similar pattern, brainwashed through

:09:34. > :09:40.Facebook, has seen videos, has heard what has been said in mosques on

:09:41. > :09:47.Friday and ticked up a knife and on and tried to or succeeded in cooling

:09:48. > :09:57.or maiming Jews. -- cooling or maiming. This is the third holiest

:09:58. > :10:02.compound, Jews call it Temple Mount and it is also the holiest site. It

:10:03. > :10:08.lies at the heart of the conflict. Last year with hopes of a political

:10:09. > :10:16.solution further away than ever the latest round of violence began right

:10:17. > :10:22.here. Clashes broke out between Israeli police and Palestinians. As

:10:23. > :10:27.Jews visited during religious holidays, fears grew that Israel had

:10:28. > :10:34.plans to change a rule that forbids non-Muslims from playing at the

:10:35. > :10:42.site. Then, in October, a Palestinian teenager stabbed to

:10:43. > :10:49.death to Jewish men in an old city street before he was shot to death.

:10:50. > :10:56.Militant groups like how mass seized the initiative. An Israeli TV show

:10:57. > :10:59.was had with this chilling cartoon calling the attacker a marker and

:11:00. > :11:10.urging others to follow in his footsteps. In six months some 30

:11:11. > :11:17.Israelis have been killed and around 200 Palestinians, most while

:11:18. > :11:19.allegedly carrying out attacks. On the outskirts of Hebron this is the

:11:20. > :11:53.home of one Palestinian attacker. Last October, the 19-year-old

:11:54. > :11:59.returned home from his night shift at eight poultry farm. His father

:12:00. > :12:23.thought he had gone to bed but he had sneaked back out of the house.

:12:24. > :12:35.He had joined large crowds at a protest in Hebron against Israeli

:12:36. > :12:38.actions. I was there that day. Palestinian protest 's have been

:12:39. > :12:42.throwing stones, is really soldiers have been fighting back with tear

:12:43. > :12:49.gas, rubber bullets and live bullets. Filled with anger, he and a

:12:50. > :13:05.friend headed to Gush Etzion junction.

:13:06. > :13:14.At the junction, the two Palestinians approached an Israeli

:13:15. > :13:15.soldier and stabbed him in the face. Immediately, other troops shot both

:13:16. > :13:31.of them dead. The Israeli army raided his house

:13:32. > :13:35.soon after the attack. Many of the boy's possessions were taken away.

:13:36. > :13:47.The family has only these photographs left.

:13:48. > :13:55.His father himself is a former militant who spent ten years in an

:13:56. > :13:59.Israeli jail but he said his son was not politically motivated in the way

:14:00. > :14:31.he was. He was impulsive, inspired by social media.

:14:32. > :14:40.But many deadly incident at the Gush Etzion junction are not so clear

:14:41. > :14:45.cut. Instead, there are conflicting Israeli and Palestinian narratives

:14:46. > :14:53.that reflect the deepening mutual mistrust. Israel's army said the

:14:54. > :14:58.woman carrying -- driving this car piled into soldiers and was shot

:14:59. > :15:05.dead. A knife was found on her dashboard. There were reports this

:15:06. > :15:10.women had committed suicide after arguing with her husband but in her

:15:11. > :15:18.village the mourners tell a different story. Her husband says

:15:19. > :15:31.his wife was frightened and took a wrong turn at the junction.

:15:32. > :16:01.The family claim Israel used excessive force to stop part and I'm

:16:02. > :16:16.shown her clothes, riddled with bullet holes.

:16:17. > :16:25.The circumstances surrounding her death remain uncertain but the

:16:26. > :16:32.impact on her family is clear. Like many Palestinians, Mohammed had a

:16:33. > :16:36.job in an Israeli settlement and now his work permit has been revoked.

:16:37. > :16:51.His 16-year-old daughter tries to be strong.

:16:52. > :17:00.This is the daily routine for some 4500 Palestinians, lining up to work

:17:01. > :17:05.in Gush Etzion. The error and more working for sectors than the good in

:17:06. > :17:13.their own towns and villages. -- Allan Moore. At the junction a new

:17:14. > :17:18.model is being built. While most Palestinians object to the expansion

:17:19. > :17:22.of settlements, very often it is here on people doing the

:17:23. > :17:27.construction. It is an uneasy economic relationship and yet, in

:17:28. > :17:35.Gush Etzion, many Israelis see it as a model for coexistence. The

:17:36. > :17:42.settlement here is just a few hundred metres from the Gush Etzion

:17:43. > :17:48.roundabout. It is breakfast time for this family. Since November they

:17:49. > :17:56.have been without their father. A Palestinian gunman shot him dead, he

:17:57. > :18:08.was a teacher. His oldest son is our putting on a brave face. You guys

:18:09. > :18:15.have your dad's smile. Everyone talks about his smile. The

:18:16. > :18:20.community, the talk about his smile. The brothers organise their lives

:18:21. > :18:25.around the religious studies and the synagogue. The miss the father but

:18:26. > :18:31.their faith is giving them strength to carry on. We are going to

:18:32. > :18:35.continue to be a happy and strong family and continue smiling the

:18:36. > :18:46.cause of what we are and what she made us. The father moved to Gush

:18:47. > :18:56.Etzion to attend a Jewish ceremony -- seminary and stayed to have his

:18:57. > :19:01.family. We are a deep and thinking people, a peaceful people, it is

:19:02. > :19:06.important to be here. This is historically a very important place

:19:07. > :19:10.to Jewish people. Every time these mothers leave the settlement they

:19:11. > :19:16.must pass the spot where their father was killed in a drive-by

:19:17. > :19:21.shooting. The gunman fired indiscriminately at a line of

:19:22. > :19:28.traffic in the junction. An American and a Palestinian driver were also

:19:29. > :19:35.shot dead. Abel are just so full of hate, they just want to kill, do not

:19:36. > :19:41.want any peace at all. -- people are just so full of hate. The brothers

:19:42. > :19:46.are doing the shop in the supermarket. They used to see it as

:19:47. > :19:53.a place of hope where Israelis and Palestinians good mix. Now they say

:19:54. > :19:58.it has become a target. A symbol for a peaceful place is weird terrorists

:19:59. > :20:03.come to attack. We want to attack the fact of us living us together

:20:04. > :20:08.here in a peaceful way so they do what they do and attack and try to

:20:09. > :20:15.murder, try to show as we are not belonging here what we do belong

:20:16. > :20:21.here. Israel was Mike by Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, rushed to the

:20:22. > :20:27.Gush Etzion junction to show his support after the first Israelis

:20:28. > :20:33.were killed here last year. He promised the army free rein to fight

:20:34. > :20:39.back. Settlers are demanding more be done to keep them safe. They have

:20:40. > :20:46.powerful voices within Israel's government. At this rally, soldiers

:20:47. > :20:52.guard is really is passing Palestinian homes to reach the

:20:53. > :20:59.roundabout. There have been several protests here at the junction at

:21:00. > :21:03.this is a particularly bold and provocative one. These are settlers

:21:04. > :21:06.who are outraged at the ongoing Palestinian attacks and the say when

:21:07. > :21:14.the attacks take place this whole area should be closed to Palestinian

:21:15. > :21:18.traffic for the security. What we want is to block the roads at least

:21:19. > :21:24.for the next few weeks for Arabs recall as we can't live like this

:21:25. > :21:31.and we should not live like this in our country. We are playing Russian

:21:32. > :21:36.roulette every single day as we get in our cars and dry down the road.

:21:37. > :21:44.It really is that serious of a situation. But in this Palestinian

:21:45. > :21:55.village here is a different perspective. It is surrounded by the

:21:56. > :21:59.Gush Etzion settlements and this man says life has become risky with new

:22:00. > :22:29.security measures at the roundabout. Already, Alastair means year feel

:22:30. > :22:33.great resentment. They are forgiven -- Palestinians feel great

:22:34. > :22:46.resentment. They are forbidden from building.

:22:47. > :22:54.The villagers have lost part of the land to the settlements. Most can no

:22:55. > :23:06.longer in a living from their own farms.

:23:07. > :23:23.While his family sleeps, Mohammed sets off to his job in the

:23:24. > :23:54.settlement. At the Gush Etzion junction,

:23:55. > :24:02.Palestinian and Israeli lives intersect. For sectors like Daniel

:24:03. > :24:10.this roundabout represents the dangers they face every day. Once

:24:11. > :24:16.this all stops and they stop coming to tell us it will go back to how it

:24:17. > :24:22.was. The status quo will be resumed. Until then, both the army and the

:24:23. > :24:29.council are real and of allowing Palestinians to roam freely around

:24:30. > :24:35.here. For Palestinians like this man whose son was killed stabbing a

:24:36. > :24:51.soldier, Hush Etzion is a symbol of Israel's occupation. -- Gush Etzion.

:24:52. > :24:59.Those living around the junction, including these sons who lost their

:25:00. > :25:05.father, they are determined to stay here and I expect the news to bring

:25:06. > :25:11.me back. For two years there have been no peace talks between Israel

:25:12. > :25:17.and the Palestinians. From the first few arrivals in 1967, there are now

:25:18. > :25:23.over half a million settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Hush

:25:24. > :25:28.Etzion offers a worrying glimpse of a future where both sides in this

:25:29. > :25:29.conflict continued to live with simmering tension and outbreaks of

:25:30. > :25:38.violence.
