0:11:17 > 0:11:19where she felt safe. I think she seems OK.

0:11:19 > 0:11:22But because we don't know anything about puppies,

0:11:22 > 0:11:24we don't know if this is normal behaviour.

0:11:24 > 0:11:26- It probably is because, I guess, you know...- Yeah.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29..if she's used to having her brothers and sisters around,

0:11:29 > 0:11:33- and suddenly it's changed. - Yes, good girl. Good girl!

0:11:33 > 0:11:36Lola is in one of the fear-imprint stages...

0:11:37 > 0:11:41..when puppies can become scared of harmless sounds and objects.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44DOOR BANGS

0:11:44 > 0:11:45Sorry, Lola!

0:11:45 > 0:11:49For now, all Lola wants to do is retreat back to the safety

0:12:26 > 0:12:29I can't think of anything, other than having a new baby, that's

0:12:29 > 0:12:32quite as exciting for a family as getting a new pet.

0:12:32 > 0:12:36The hamster was lovely, but she wasn't quite as exciting.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39- Say goodbye.- Bye, Lola.

0:14:04 > 0:14:06for nervous new pets like Lola,

0:14:06 > 0:14:07it's more likely that anxiety

0:14:07 > 0:14:09has triggered the return of her breakfast.

0:14:10 > 0:14:12Oh, now she's eating it up again.

0:14:12 > 0:14:15Right, we're home now. You poor thing.

0:14:57 > 0:15:00using gentle encouragement and letting them come to you,

0:15:00 > 0:15:02is the best way to gain a puppy's trust.

0:15:04 > 0:15:05Lola.

0:15:07 > 0:15:09Look how much fun it is here.

0:15:09 > 0:15:11Awww!

0:15:11 > 0:15:13Good girl. Yes!

0:15:13 > 0:15:17Good girl! Well done!

0:15:17 > 0:15:19Aren't you the cleverest little puppy in the house?

0:15:21 > 0:15:22Bet she has a wee on the carpet now.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25Quite often in life, the more you put into something,

0:15:25 > 0:15:28or the harder something is, the greater the rewards are.

0:15:28 > 0:15:31I'm sure the rewards will be immense, and they'll be things that

0:15:31 > 0:15:34we can't even imagine, now, that will be absolutely wonderful.

0:15:37 > 0:15:41Like Lola, most of our puppies will be joining their new families around

0:15:41 > 0:15:43the age of eight weeks old.

0:15:46 > 0:15:50It's an ideal time to begin training and socialisation,

0:15:50 > 0:15:53as this stage is a puppy's most rapid period of learning.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00But some of our owners won't have the chance

0:16:00 > 0:16:02to shape their perfect pet.

0:16:02 > 0:16:06- Aw!- Oh, look.- Is that Pedro? - Oh, my God!

0:16:06 > 0:16:08- OVER SPEAKER - This is Pedro!- Adorable.

0:16:08 > 0:16:12The Clinks, in Guildford, are taking the plunge with a seven-month-old

0:16:12 > 0:16:15rescue dog. They found him through an online Spanish charity,

0:16:15 > 0:16:17who've carefully vetted them.

0:16:17 > 0:16:19What breed do you think he might be?

0:16:19 > 0:16:23We think he's a Podenco, but he's obviously crossed with a very,

0:16:23 > 0:16:26- very tiny dog.- OK.

0:16:26 > 0:16:30The Podenco is a hunting breed, often abandoned when past its prime,

0:16:30 > 0:16:32so an ideal dog to rescue.

0:16:32 > 0:16:35Keep still. That's your mummy and daddy there - look.

0:16:38 > 0:16:42I think there are enough dogs out there who have had horrible,

0:16:42 > 0:16:46disadvantaged, miserable starts in life.

0:16:46 > 0:16:50But to be able to give a dog a loving home who, against all odds,

0:16:50 > 0:16:54probably wouldn't have had one, I think is the right thing to do.

0:16:56 > 0:16:59Before I forget, for dinner tonight, we need to take a bottle of wine.

0:16:59 > 0:17:00OK.

0:17:00 > 0:17:04Rick and Sarah have decided it's the perfect time in life to adopt

0:17:04 > 0:17:08an adolescent, now that their own are flying the nest.

0:17:08 > 0:17:11A dog, I think, would be lovely in that sense, because it would be

0:17:11 > 0:17:13something that we could both focus on.

0:17:13 > 0:17:15I'm not saying it's going to be a child replacement,

0:17:15 > 0:17:18- but it will replace a bit of something, I think.- Yes.

0:17:19 > 0:17:23Sarah says I'm retired. I say I'm semi-retired.

0:17:23 > 0:17:26I'm really looking forward to going to get the newspaper in the morning

0:17:26 > 0:17:28or having a cup of tea at the local caff.

0:17:28 > 0:17:31- And having a dog.- And that's nice, that's something you do

0:17:31 > 0:17:34when you're retired, you see? You go for coffee!

0:17:34 > 0:17:37- Sorry, I am not retired.- Get to meet people in the community.

0:17:37 > 0:17:38I am not retired.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48DOOR BELL RINGS

0:17:48 > 0:17:52Oh, my God. He's here.

0:17:52 > 0:17:56After an epic 1,400-mile journey,

0:17:56 > 0:18:00Rick's new semi-retirement buddy has landed in Guildford.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03Pedro! I recognise you. Hello!

0:18:03 > 0:18:05Do you know where home is? Come on.

0:18:05 > 0:18:08Over this way. That's it.

0:18:08 > 0:18:09This is your new home.

0:18:09 > 0:18:12This is your house now.

0:18:12 > 0:18:15Do you want to wander round a little bit? Yup.

0:18:15 > 0:18:17This is Pedro.

0:18:17 > 0:18:22A Podenco cross who's spent most of his life in a Spanish rescue centre,

0:18:22 > 0:18:26after being found abandoned in a bag of cement at just a few weeks old.

0:18:27 > 0:18:28Hey, hey, hey, hey! Down you go. Down.

0:18:30 > 0:18:32This is worrying me.

0:18:32 > 0:18:33Come on, down!

0:18:34 > 0:18:38Oh, my God. He's going to be a handful, I can tell.

0:18:41 > 0:18:44As Pedro's already well into his terrible teens,

0:18:44 > 0:18:47any undesirable behaviour will be harder to tackle.

0:18:50 > 0:18:52Oh, crikey, no, we're not doing that!

0:18:52 > 0:18:54Down, down. Down.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56Down.

0:18:56 > 0:18:58No.

0:18:58 > 0:18:59Well, finally. Oh, OK.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02For now, you're allowed up on the sofa.

0:19:02 > 0:19:04For now.

0:19:04 > 0:19:08This is sort of a little bit like internet dating, really, I felt.

0:19:08 > 0:19:11You know, you'd see the pictures, you like the sound of them...

0:19:11 > 0:19:13He's just adorable.

0:19:17 > 0:19:19After a tranquil start,

0:19:19 > 0:19:22the Tran family in East London have got their hands full with

0:19:22 > 0:19:24a tempestuous toddler.

0:19:24 > 0:19:26SQUEAKING AND BARKING

0:19:45 > 0:19:48Chihuahuas usually prefer the company of their own breed,

0:19:48 > 0:19:51but these two haven't formed the bond Hannah hoped for.

0:19:52 > 0:19:54She won't leave him alone.

0:19:54 > 0:19:56She literally torments him.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01CHLOE YIPS

0:20:01 > 0:20:04Chloe's crouching posture, known as the play bow,

0:20:04 > 0:20:07is a sure sign she wants Rocky to join in the fun.

0:20:07 > 0:20:10But at ten, Rocky doesn't have the same energy levels.

0:20:11 > 0:20:15His method of dealing with it is just barking, basically.

0:20:15 > 0:20:16What he does best.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18BARKING

0:20:19 > 0:20:22And that just makes her even more hyper.

0:20:23 > 0:20:25Chloe really likes him.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28She's always constantly licking his face.

0:20:29 > 0:20:32It's really cute to watch, but he does not like it.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35Maybe because she still eats her own poop.

0:20:35 > 0:20:37It's a really disgusting habit.

0:20:37 > 0:20:39Don't lick that!

0:20:39 > 0:20:42His fur smells afterwards, after she licks him.

0:20:42 > 0:20:45So, yeah, he's not happy about that.

0:20:46 > 0:20:48It's not really what I expected.

0:20:48 > 0:20:50I always thought

0:20:50 > 0:20:53maybe they'd get on and...

0:20:53 > 0:20:57I don't really know what to do.

0:21:00 > 0:21:02Here you go.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05The Clinks have now had Pedro for 48 hours.

0:21:05 > 0:21:07Yes. Water.

0:21:09 > 0:21:10- Good boy.- Good boy!

0:21:12 > 0:21:14There you go. Sleep well.

0:21:14 > 0:21:17Having slept alongside 27 other rescue dogs

0:21:17 > 0:21:19for his first seven months,

0:21:19 > 0:21:21he's now spending his nights alone.

0:21:26 > 0:21:28DOG WHINES

0:21:32 > 0:21:34Now, what's the matter, hmm?

0:21:34 > 0:21:36What's the matter?

0:21:37 > 0:21:40OK? You need to go to sleep.

0:21:40 > 0:21:42- OK? - PEDRO SNUFFLES

0:21:42 > 0:21:43Calm down.

0:21:44 > 0:21:46HE WHINES

0:21:50 > 0:21:5320% of dogs experience separation anxiety

0:21:53 > 0:21:57and quickly pick up on any cues that mean their owner is leaving.

0:22:00 > 0:22:02HE WHINES

0:22:02 > 0:22:06OK, we're all going to bed. OK?

0:22:06 > 0:22:08We're all going to sleep.

0:22:08 > 0:22:11OK? That's a good boy. That's a good boy.

0:22:11 > 0:22:13- HE WHINES - Sshhh.

0:22:16 > 0:22:18PEDRO WHINES

0:22:18 > 0:22:19Oh, Pedro!

0:22:24 > 0:22:26SNORING

0:22:27 > 0:22:30A bit frustrated!

0:22:30 > 0:22:34That, you know, we can't have a good night's sleep.

0:22:34 > 0:22:36I have to say, it's worse than having had a baby.

0:22:36 > 0:22:37And I've had three babies.

0:22:38 > 0:22:41My problem is, I don't know what the problem is with him.

0:22:41 > 0:22:44I think it's because he doesn't want to be on his own.

0:22:44 > 0:22:48Rescue dogs like Pedro, who've had an inconsistent start in life,

0:22:48 > 0:22:51are even more likely to want to stay close to their owners.

0:22:53 > 0:22:56Is this comfortable for you? It's not for me.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58Agh! Right down my ear.

0:22:59 > 0:23:02I just don't know what else we can do.

0:23:02 > 0:23:04I don't want to give in just yet.

0:23:04 > 0:23:05Pedro, come on.

0:23:05 > 0:23:08I'll shut the door behind him.

0:23:08 > 0:23:12On their sixth night, Rick and Sarah decide to leave Pedro to cry.

0:23:12 > 0:23:14HE WHINES

0:23:34 > 0:23:37It's a mystery, isn't it? You have to admit.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39SHE LAUGHS

0:23:39 > 0:23:40I don't know, he just came out.

0:23:40 > 0:23:43But I don't know where he is, even. He's not in the cage!

0:23:43 > 0:23:45The cage is...

0:23:45 > 0:23:47Oh, it's up here, you see?

0:23:47 > 0:23:49But he can't... How can he get out of there?

0:23:49 > 0:23:51Oh, there you are.

0:23:51 > 0:23:53Pedro, come here.

0:23:53 > 0:23:55Definitely, I would say, night by night,

0:23:55 > 0:23:57his behaviour is getting worse.

0:23:57 > 0:24:01I'm very aware of the fact that it's something that we are doing wrong.

0:24:01 > 0:24:03Why are you doing this, hmm?

0:24:03 > 0:24:04Is it because you're lonely?

0:24:04 > 0:24:06You can't tell us, can you?

0:24:08 > 0:24:10No. No.

0:24:12 > 0:24:14So, now you'll be fine, and absolutely quiet

0:24:14 > 0:24:16until we try again tonight, won't you?

0:24:19 > 0:24:23Each of our ten puppies will snooze for 15-20 hours a day.

0:24:25 > 0:24:28And should be sleeping through the night by four months old.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33But some will experience nocturnal disruption

0:24:33 > 0:24:35as they adjust to their new home.

0:24:35 > 0:24:38LIGHT WHINING

0:24:38 > 0:24:42To encourage them to sleep alone, puppies need consistency and calm,

0:24:42 > 0:24:44quiet reassurances.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49As much as they say you must persist, you just,

0:24:49 > 0:24:50- you know, ignore it.- Ignore it.

0:24:50 > 0:24:54But he does sound like he's in distress, so...

0:24:54 > 0:24:55it's a bit worrying.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00Rick and Sarah decide to deal with the problem...

0:25:00 > 0:25:02Pillow in...

0:25:02 > 0:25:04..by avoiding it.

0:25:04 > 0:25:06Pedro is moving into the bedroom.

0:25:06 > 0:25:09And this is where Pedro's now sleeping.

0:25:11 > 0:25:12For the night.

0:25:15 > 0:25:17This isn't actually the perfect solution.

0:25:17 > 0:25:20I don't really want to spend the next 15 years with a dog in a

0:25:20 > 0:25:22crate in my room.

0:25:22 > 0:25:26- But for now it's at least - a- solution, isn't it?- Mm.

0:25:32 > 0:25:36In London, Chihuahua Chloe is 20 weeks old.

0:25:36 > 0:25:39And still convinced that Rocky is her perfect playmate.

0:25:40 > 0:25:42Rocky hates her, basically.

0:25:42 > 0:25:46He doesn't like her. He doesn't want to be anywhere near her.

0:25:48 > 0:25:51Chloe's playful biting isn't as harmless as she thinks.

0:25:55 > 0:25:58Dogs can have a bite force of over 700 psi.

0:25:58 > 0:26:02Although the pint-sized Chihuahua is no match for a pit bull or a

0:26:02 > 0:26:05Rottweiler, it's ranked as one of the top two breeds

0:26:05 > 0:26:07most likely to bite.

0:26:08 > 0:26:10Bad luck for Rocky.

0:26:11 > 0:26:14The only time they're not like this is when they're sleeping.

0:26:14 > 0:26:16DOG YIPS

0:26:27 > 0:26:29I don't really know what to do.

0:26:32 > 0:26:35On hand to help our puppies' owners is Louise Glazebrook,

0:26:35 > 0:26:38a dog behaviourist with over ten years' experience

0:26:38 > 0:26:41in reining in unruly pet pooches.

0:26:42 > 0:26:45- Hi!- Hi!- Hello!- I'm Louise.

0:26:45 > 0:26:47Hi, Louise, nice to meet you.

0:26:47 > 0:26:49All right, so what do you need my help with?

0:26:49 > 0:26:52I'm having a little bit of trouble trying to get Rocky

0:26:52 > 0:26:54- to get on with my new puppy.- OK.

0:26:54 > 0:26:56He really doesn't like her.

0:26:56 > 0:26:59What was the reason behind, then, getting Chloe?

0:26:59 > 0:27:01After Lucky passed away, I couldn't cope.

0:27:01 > 0:27:02Yeah.

0:27:04 > 0:27:07Yeah, I wanted to get a puppy just as a distraction.

0:27:07 > 0:27:09Oh, don't... Honestly, don't...

0:27:09 > 0:27:13- I still miss her. - I totally understand.

0:27:13 > 0:27:16I bought her more so for me.

0:27:16 > 0:27:19I didn't really think about Rocky, either.

0:27:19 > 0:27:22I just assumed they'd probably get on anyway, but I was wrong.

0:27:23 > 0:27:26- If a dog is really part of your gang and part of your life...- Mm.

0:27:26 > 0:27:30..when they go, there's always going to be something missing that

0:27:30 > 0:27:31- no other dog will replace.- Yeah.

0:27:31 > 0:27:34But I do feel like they can help you move forward.

0:27:34 > 0:27:37I think we just need to probably address the balance a little bit...

0:27:37 > 0:27:40- Mm-hm.- ..of how things are kind of working out.

0:27:40 > 0:27:42This is where Rocky spends most of his time.

0:27:42 > 0:27:45So I can just see what Chloe's up to, shall we maybe just...

0:27:45 > 0:27:47- Move the gate. - Yeah, just move the gate,

0:27:47 > 0:27:49so we can just see naturally what she would get up to

0:27:49 > 0:27:51without encouraging her.

0:27:51 > 0:27:53Here she comes, here she comes.

0:27:56 > 0:27:57There she goes.

0:27:59 > 0:28:00THEY BARK

0:28:02 > 0:28:04OK.

0:28:04 > 0:28:06How long do you think she can keep that up?

0:28:06 > 0:28:08That kind of annoying him?

0:28:08 > 0:28:11- Well, she can go on forever. - Can she really?- Yeah.

0:28:11 > 0:28:14When I see he's getting a bit distressed, I have to separate them.

0:28:14 > 0:28:18- OK. Essentially he's a little bit like a retired gentleman...- Yeah.

0:28:18 > 0:28:23..who wants his peace, read a newspaper, chill out.

0:28:23 > 0:28:27And then you've kind of introduced a young toddler

0:28:27 > 0:28:28with loads of energy,

0:28:28 > 0:28:31and they're kind of poles apart.

0:28:33 > 0:28:34To give Rocky some time out,

0:28:34 > 0:28:37they need to find a way to channel Chloe's energy elsewhere.

0:28:39 > 0:28:41In terms of exercise,

0:28:41 > 0:28:44where is it that you're going with Chloe and doing with her and...?

0:28:44 > 0:28:46Just around the block.

0:28:46 > 0:28:49OK. Do you feel like she enjoys going out?

0:28:49 > 0:28:51She'd rather be indoors.

0:28:51 > 0:28:54- I have to carry her halfway down the road!- Really?- Yeah.

0:28:57 > 0:28:59So, is this where you normally take her?

0:28:59 > 0:29:01Yeah, I usually always walk her down this street.

0:29:01 > 0:29:04- OK.- It's quite a busy road as well,

0:29:04 > 0:29:08- so the noise kind of puts her off. - OK.

0:29:08 > 0:29:13Although this is Chloe's walk, her feet haven't yet touched the ground.

0:29:13 > 0:29:16- I usually pop her down...- OK, let's see.- ..around this point.

0:29:20 > 0:29:22Is this what she's normally like?

0:29:22 > 0:29:25Yeah, she normally is like this.

0:29:25 > 0:29:29What about if we try going up there, where it's a little bit quieter?

0:29:31 > 0:29:33- It's fine as a pee break... - Yeah.- ..it's fine as a quick

0:29:33 > 0:29:35"get a bit of air, go back in",

0:29:35 > 0:29:38but it's not fine as exercise, stimulation.

0:29:38 > 0:29:41Do you have a park that's nearby that would be easy for you to go to,

0:29:41 > 0:29:45- that's, like, a decent size? - Yeah, there is a park near here.

0:29:45 > 0:29:47- I've never been to it, though.- OK.

0:29:52 > 0:29:53So, why don't we pop her down?

0:29:53 > 0:29:56Let's just go for a little walk along and see how she is,

0:29:56 > 0:29:58see if she's interested, if she'll walk.

0:30:00 > 0:30:02For me, she feels much happier.

0:30:02 > 0:30:06She's pulling, she's trying to get things, it smells amazing.

0:30:06 > 0:30:09So she's doing all the things that a dog should be able to do,

0:30:09 > 0:30:12but when you're walking her on the street, she's not getting that

0:30:12 > 0:30:15- stimulation, it feels like she just wants to go home.- Yeah.

0:30:19 > 0:30:22Toy dogs like Chloe are not handbag accessories.

0:30:24 > 0:30:27All of our ten puppies, whatever their size,

0:30:27 > 0:30:31should be getting regular exercise, and increasing it every month.

0:30:33 > 0:30:37As they approach adulthood, their needs will begin to differ.

0:30:37 > 0:30:40While an hour of exertion is enough for a full-grown pug,

0:30:40 > 0:30:44a cocker spaniel can keep going for more than three hours.

0:30:47 > 0:30:51Do you think you would ever get to the point where you might be happy

0:30:51 > 0:30:53to let her off for a bit more free rein?

0:30:53 > 0:30:56I think eventually - I am naturally a very anxious person.

0:30:56 > 0:31:00OK. That's fine. Would it totally freak you out if I dropped the lead?

0:31:00 > 0:31:02- Yes!- OK.

0:31:02 > 0:31:04Or maybe we can try.

0:31:04 > 0:31:06It's your decision, she's your dog.

0:31:06 > 0:31:07- I think we should try.- Yeah?

0:31:09 > 0:31:11- Chloe! - SHE CLAPS

0:31:11 > 0:31:13Chloe!

0:31:13 > 0:31:15Good girl!

0:31:15 > 0:31:17So talk to her, when she comes back to you.

0:31:17 > 0:31:19Chloe.

0:31:21 > 0:31:22Call, call, call. That's it.

0:31:22 > 0:31:25- Praise, praise, give her lots of praise.- Yeah! Good girl!

0:31:25 > 0:31:27- Good girl!- Good girl!

0:31:27 > 0:31:29Oh, you're so clever!

0:31:29 > 0:31:32- How are you feeling?- I feel much better.

0:31:32 > 0:31:35- You feel much better?- Yeah. I doesn't feel as apprehensive now.

0:31:35 > 0:31:38- OK.- Yeah, I need to be less uptight.

0:31:41 > 0:31:45Like Hannah, all of our owners will need to conquer the anxieties that

0:31:45 > 0:31:47come with taking on a new pet.

0:31:47 > 0:31:51But the stakes are even higher for the owner of our fourth puppy...

0:31:53 > 0:31:55..who's destined for working life

0:31:55 > 0:31:58in one of the UK's most hostile environments.

0:31:58 > 0:32:00Good morning, Will. Go ahead.

0:32:00 > 0:32:03Morning, Graham. Just a general overview of Zone B...

0:32:03 > 0:32:06The Alpha run is much better.

0:32:09 > 0:32:12Will Davis has been a ski patroller in the Nevis Range

0:32:12 > 0:32:14in the Scottish Highlands for three years.

0:32:17 > 0:32:19I'm definitely a self-proclaimed geek about ski patrol.

0:32:19 > 0:32:23I absolutely love it. It's something I've wanted to do for a long time.

0:32:23 > 0:32:26I wake up every morning, and I cannot wait to go to work.

0:32:26 > 0:32:28In the UK, mountain rescue teams

0:32:28 > 0:32:32respond to over a thousand emergencies every year -

0:32:32 > 0:32:34from lost hikers to avalanche victims.

0:32:38 > 0:32:42If you're buried in an avalanche, unless you are exceptionally lucky,

0:32:42 > 0:32:46your only chance of survival would be an avalanche dog

0:32:46 > 0:32:47sniffing you out.

0:32:47 > 0:32:49Will is taking on the huge responsibility

0:32:49 > 0:32:52of training the Nevis Mountain Rangers' first-ever

0:32:52 > 0:32:54search-and-rescue dog.

0:32:54 > 0:32:57If we get this training right with the ski patrol dog here,

0:32:57 > 0:33:00there's a very high chance it could save someone's life.

0:33:00 > 0:33:01I'm very excited,

0:33:01 > 0:33:05but I'm also absolutely terrified about the undertaking of it.

0:33:11 > 0:33:14Today's picking-up-Jura day.

0:33:14 > 0:33:17So yeah, today is a massive day.

0:33:17 > 0:33:18So, yeah, just...

0:33:18 > 0:33:22see what happens. See if she likes me.

0:33:22 > 0:33:25Will is making a 500-mile round trip to Northumberland,

0:33:25 > 0:33:26to pick up his puppy.

0:33:28 > 0:33:31I'm not married, I don't have a mortgage. So, yeah.

0:33:31 > 0:33:35Yeah, this is the biggest commitment of my life so far.

0:33:38 > 0:33:41- Hello, Catherine.- Hello, Will! - Oh, hello, puppy!

0:33:41 > 0:33:44- Here he is!- Hello!- Hello!

0:33:44 > 0:33:46SHE LAUGHS

0:33:46 > 0:33:50This is Jura, a 12-week-old Border collie.

0:33:50 > 0:33:53Bred from two working sheepdog parents,

0:33:53 > 0:33:56she has the magic combination of brains, stamina and loyalty -

0:33:56 > 0:33:58ideal for the role of search and rescue.

0:34:00 > 0:34:02Hello! Hello!

0:34:02 > 0:34:04Who's a good girl? Are you my little girl?

0:34:04 > 0:34:07Are you going to bite my chin? Hello!

0:34:07 > 0:34:08She's absolutely amazing.

0:34:08 > 0:34:12She's stunning! Gorgeous little thing, aren't you?

0:34:12 > 0:34:14You're going to go and help Will.

0:34:14 > 0:34:15For the last three months,

0:34:15 > 0:34:18Jura's been looked after by breeder Catherine.

0:34:18 > 0:34:20Don't do that!

0:34:20 > 0:34:22SHE LAUGHS

0:34:22 > 0:34:27Are you drying the tears off my eyes?! Mm?

0:34:27 > 0:34:29I'M not going to start crying.

0:34:29 > 0:34:31Here we go, poochie. Sorry, Catherine, to do this to you.

0:34:31 > 0:34:33It's all right.

0:34:35 > 0:34:36Mm?

0:34:36 > 0:34:38Prison for the next seven hours.

0:34:38 > 0:34:41Sorry, doggy. In you go...

0:34:41 > 0:34:43- There we go.- That's got a little blanket, to...

0:34:43 > 0:34:45- See you later.- Thank you. Bye!

0:34:47 > 0:34:51I hope Jura makes a brilliant

0:34:51 > 0:34:52rescue dog.

0:34:54 > 0:34:58Once she gets trained and does what she's going to do and find people on

0:34:58 > 0:35:02Ben Nevis, she's just going to have an amazing adventure.

0:35:04 > 0:35:06JURA WHINES

0:35:06 > 0:35:09It's all right, puppy. Only another seven hours to go.

0:35:09 > 0:35:12SHE WHINES

0:35:12 > 0:35:13Yeah, yeah.

0:35:21 > 0:35:23Ever since we've suddenly got into the snowline,

0:35:23 > 0:35:26she seems to have calmed down quite a lot.

0:35:26 > 0:35:28She seems very, very interested in it.

0:35:28 > 0:35:30I can tell already she's a great dog.

0:35:30 > 0:35:32- She's an absolute great pup. - HE SNIFFS

0:35:32 > 0:35:34- And she's definitely just- BLEEP- herself!

0:35:37 > 0:35:38Welcome to having a puppy.

0:35:40 > 0:35:43Luckily, there's some snow to wash her on.

0:35:43 > 0:35:45All over the car, good girl. Yeah. Well done.

0:35:45 > 0:35:48When a puppy is scared or anxious,

0:35:48 > 0:35:51they can release a thick, smelly liquid from their anal glands.

0:35:51 > 0:35:55If it coincides with a poo, it can be extra stinky.

0:35:55 > 0:35:57Jeez. What have you been eating?!

0:35:57 > 0:36:00Literally everywhere.

0:36:00 > 0:36:01My toiletries!

0:36:01 > 0:36:02In you go. Thank you.

0:36:04 > 0:36:07It is going to stink for the rest of this journey,

0:36:07 > 0:36:10but nothing I can do about it.

0:36:11 > 0:36:15All I need is a bin bag in my life right now!

0:36:15 > 0:36:18No more stinky poo, Jura. Please.

0:36:23 > 0:36:25Will needs to teach Jura a lot more than just

0:36:25 > 0:36:27where to do her number twos.

0:36:29 > 0:36:32He has just six months to get Jura ready for an assessment

0:36:32 > 0:36:34that will determine whether or not she has a future

0:36:34 > 0:36:38as a search-and-rescue dog in the Highlands of Scotland.

0:36:42 > 0:36:45OK, sit, Lola, sit, sit... Don't jump, don't jump.

0:36:45 > 0:36:49Now we're doing "not jumping". Sit down! Down, Lola, down.

0:36:49 > 0:36:51In Hampshire, the Paye family are now a month

0:36:51 > 0:36:53into THEIR canine adventure.

0:36:53 > 0:36:56And Lola is starting to assert her independence.

0:36:56 > 0:36:58But I've got two feet.

0:36:58 > 0:36:59Lola.

0:37:00 > 0:37:02Stop it!

0:37:02 > 0:37:04Oh, stop it! Lola, come.

0:37:04 > 0:37:07I'm not entirely sure she knows her name,

0:37:07 > 0:37:09because she never responds when we're outside.

0:37:09 > 0:37:11Before Lola arrived,

0:37:11 > 0:37:15kids Amelia and Charlie signed a binding contract, promising not only

0:37:15 > 0:37:20to play with her, but to train, feed, walk and clear up after her.

0:37:20 > 0:37:23Right, does one of you want to try holding the thing up?

0:37:23 > 0:37:24I mean, this is typical,

0:37:24 > 0:37:27that you try and get the children to do something and I end up doing it.

0:37:27 > 0:37:30Amelia! This is supposed to be your job.

0:37:30 > 0:37:34Amelia and Charlie don't like inconvenience on their lives.

0:37:34 > 0:37:37It's not going to get any better when they're teenagers,

0:37:37 > 0:37:40they are not going to be more willing to be inconvenienced

0:37:40 > 0:37:43for the sake of, you know, doggy dos.

0:37:44 > 0:37:46Lola, come!

0:37:46 > 0:37:49Claire has been left to do all the hard work.

0:37:49 > 0:37:50Here you go, Lola, good girl.

0:37:50 > 0:37:54I know another one, I've been trying to teach her to stay.

0:37:54 > 0:37:56When I ask her to stay...she comes.

0:37:56 > 0:37:57Stay, Lola.

0:37:57 > 0:38:00SHE LAUGHS

0:38:00 > 0:38:03No, don't chew it!

0:38:03 > 0:38:06So annoying.

0:38:06 > 0:38:09Puppies are capable of learning five basic commands

0:38:09 > 0:38:11by the age of eight weeks.

0:38:11 > 0:38:13No! Lola. No.

0:38:13 > 0:38:16But Lola's having too much fun to listen.

0:38:16 > 0:38:20Puppies need this time to play and explore in a safe environment.

0:38:20 > 0:38:22Stop it, Lola. Lola, ball.

0:38:22 > 0:38:24Ball.

0:38:24 > 0:38:26Stop it! Stop it. No. No. No!

0:38:26 > 0:38:30Lola, this way, this way. This is not ideal.

0:38:30 > 0:38:34Asking Lola to stop is like asking a young child to sit still.

0:38:34 > 0:38:37The best time to train a pup is when it's in a calmer mood.

0:38:37 > 0:38:39Now, is this a nice family pet?

0:38:39 > 0:38:42This is supposed to be a golden retriever puppy.

0:38:43 > 0:38:46Argh! She's gone wild. Stop it!

0:38:47 > 0:38:49She does not respect me.

0:38:49 > 0:38:52No respect. If I was a rapper, I'd be writing lots of songs about this.

0:38:52 > 0:38:54And the fact she's dissing me.

0:38:54 > 0:38:58There are limits, and I'm just really fed up with it.

0:38:58 > 0:39:00Oh, don't eat the roses.

0:39:00 > 0:39:02So annoying!

0:39:02 > 0:39:03No, don't go outside.

0:39:03 > 0:39:07Don't go outside, Lola.

0:39:07 > 0:39:09I said don't, Lola! Oh, grr!

0:39:09 > 0:39:12Lola!

0:39:12 > 0:39:13SHE SIGHS

0:39:21 > 0:39:23All new owners need to train their puppies.

0:39:25 > 0:39:27But for Will Davis, there's added pressure.

0:39:27 > 0:39:31He needs to teach his Border collie, Jura, how to save lives.

0:39:34 > 0:39:38And after one night in her new home, it's time for her first test.

0:39:38 > 0:39:44We're just going to go over to the sort of Glencoe mountain area

0:39:44 > 0:39:47and go and play in the snow.

0:39:47 > 0:39:50This is another sort of crucial part, to see if she likes the snow.

0:39:52 > 0:39:56If Will succeeds in training Jura as a search-and-rescue dog,

0:39:56 > 0:40:00she'll be spending every winter working in freezing conditions.

0:40:04 > 0:40:05Want to come and play in the snow?

0:40:05 > 0:40:09You're going to have to get used to all this. Yeah, ooh,

0:40:09 > 0:40:12someone's excited. See what you think of this!

0:40:12 > 0:40:16Not even... Off the lead as well, eh? There you go, girl.

0:40:16 > 0:40:17Wahey!

0:40:18 > 0:40:19Oh, and she's off.

0:40:23 > 0:40:26Just like Jura, most puppies love snow.

0:40:29 > 0:40:32While us humans would never brave the snow in bare feet,

0:40:32 > 0:40:35dogs have exceptionally good blood flow to their paws,

0:40:35 > 0:40:37protecting them from frostbite.

0:40:39 > 0:40:40Jura...stay.

0:40:40 > 0:40:42That was everything I thought it would be -

0:40:42 > 0:40:45just running through the snow with my dog

0:40:45 > 0:40:47is a pretty momentous occasion

0:40:47 > 0:40:49for me. Erm... Yeah.

0:40:49 > 0:40:51So much fun!

0:40:53 > 0:40:55Come on, Jura. Come on. Jura.

0:40:55 > 0:40:58- Jura. Hup... Hup.- By 14 weeks old,

0:40:58 > 0:41:01Jura is making the daily trip to work with Will.

0:41:04 > 0:41:06This is the start of the morning routine,

0:41:06 > 0:41:08so it's a mad rush to get to work.

0:41:08 > 0:41:10There's the early-morning gondolas going up in the dark

0:41:10 > 0:41:13to get to the top station at 650 metres,

0:41:13 > 0:41:16and then straight into work on the mountain.

0:41:18 > 0:41:22Jura's starting to learn new skills unique to her future role in this

0:41:22 > 0:41:24challenging environment.

0:41:24 > 0:41:26Jura, shoulders...

0:41:27 > 0:41:30This is eventually leading on to the whole skiing with her on my

0:41:30 > 0:41:31shoulders, which is the plan

0:41:31 > 0:41:34to not tire her out. If there was an avalanche,

0:41:34 > 0:41:36I'll ski her to the incident.

0:41:36 > 0:41:39She's got all her energy so she'll search really well.

0:41:39 > 0:41:41Hey? Go on, go on, then...

0:41:41 > 0:41:45As an adult, Jura will be able to keep going all day.

0:41:45 > 0:41:48- Come on, then. This way... - HE WHISTLES

0:41:48 > 0:41:50But until then, Will has to be careful

0:41:50 > 0:41:51not to overwork her growing joints.

0:41:51 > 0:41:54- Good girl...- So he only exercises her during his breaks.

0:41:54 > 0:41:56What a good girl!

0:41:58 > 0:42:01But that leaves her with energy to burn at night.

0:42:06 > 0:42:08Ho-ho, mad spell!

0:42:08 > 0:42:12Will you let me chill out, Jura? Eh? Are we going to chill out?

0:42:12 > 0:42:14Good girl... Good girl.

0:42:20 > 0:42:22Jura... Hey!

0:42:22 > 0:42:25Her energy level just goes through the roof when she comes back here.

0:42:25 > 0:42:27If I just keep doing this all night, this is all we'll do,

0:42:27 > 0:42:30but the second I try and do anything else,

0:42:30 > 0:42:34she'll start trying to eat coal, eat wood, eat the basket...

0:42:34 > 0:42:38For bachelor Will, nights out at the pub are a distant memory.

0:42:38 > 0:42:39If I just left her,

0:42:39 > 0:42:43I have no idea what state this room would be in if I came back down.

0:42:43 > 0:42:45Come on.

0:42:45 > 0:42:49It's more than baby-sitting, it's an absolute full-time job.

0:42:49 > 0:42:52I'm completely mentally exhausted at the minute,

0:42:52 > 0:42:55the most I've ever been in my life.

0:42:55 > 0:43:00And I've sacrificed a lot of my life for this dog.

0:43:00 > 0:43:03Jura, down.

0:43:03 > 0:43:05While Will used to invite his mates over for a beer,

0:43:05 > 0:43:08they're now being roped into dog-sitting.

0:43:08 > 0:43:11Now that you're here, I'm going for a shower!

0:43:11 > 0:43:13See you later!

0:43:13 > 0:43:15How do I know when she needs a wee?

0:43:15 > 0:43:19Any opportunity to get a bit of a break and I'm taking it.

0:43:21 > 0:43:23Sweet.

0:43:28 > 0:43:30Come on!

0:43:30 > 0:43:32I'm going to get you!

0:43:36 > 0:43:38I'm out of breath.

0:43:38 > 0:43:40He's worn me out.

0:43:40 > 0:43:43I'm supposed to be walking YOU, not you walking ME.

0:43:43 > 0:43:45In Guildford, Rick is settling in to

0:43:45 > 0:43:48semi-retirement with his new sidekick.

0:43:50 > 0:43:54Because I've built such a bond with him already, he means so much to me.

0:43:54 > 0:43:56He's like my child now.

0:43:56 > 0:43:58I'm responsible for him.

0:43:58 > 0:44:00It's like, if he was to become ill,

0:44:00 > 0:44:05it would affect me like it would if it was my own child becoming ill.

0:44:08 > 0:44:10But Pedro's no longer a child.

0:44:10 > 0:44:13Now around 8½ months old,

0:44:13 > 0:44:15he's a fully-fledged adolescent.

0:44:15 > 0:44:17Pedro.

0:44:17 > 0:44:18Pedro!

0:44:18 > 0:44:21Oh, God.

0:44:21 > 0:44:24Like their male human counterparts,

0:44:24 > 0:44:27teenage dogs experience a surge in testosterone

0:44:27 > 0:44:29and like to push the boundaries.

0:44:29 > 0:44:31Oh, Pedro. What are we going to do with you?

0:44:31 > 0:44:33He has started going out and

0:44:33 > 0:44:36wandering all around the neighbour's garden and not coming back.

0:44:36 > 0:44:41Over the last two weeks Pedro has disappeared ten times.

0:44:43 > 0:44:45He is a bit of a Houdini.

0:44:45 > 0:44:47If you remember, he was escaping

0:44:47 > 0:44:50from his cage and we never did figure out how he did that.

0:44:52 > 0:44:54Has he gotten over?

0:44:55 > 0:44:58He's over on the other side, isn't he? Pedro!

0:44:58 > 0:45:00HE SIGHS

0:45:00 > 0:45:02Come here.

0:45:02 > 0:45:07The secret to Pedro's escapology also lies in his breeding.

0:45:07 > 0:45:09He is part Podenco, an inquisitive

0:45:09 > 0:45:12breed of sight hound from the Canary Islands.

0:45:12 > 0:45:15Ideal for catching rabbits with their sharp vision and speed.

0:45:15 > 0:45:17You didn't escape, did you?

0:45:17 > 0:45:19Yeah. Again.

0:45:19 > 0:45:21It's just an ongoing saga.

0:45:21 > 0:45:24What are we going to do with you, eh?

0:45:24 > 0:45:27Once again, Rick has decided prevention is better than cure.

0:45:29 > 0:45:33The next move is to secure the garden once and for all.

0:45:33 > 0:45:35That is my goal

0:45:35 > 0:45:36and I guarantee it.

0:45:36 > 0:45:38HE CHUCKLES

0:45:41 > 0:45:43Into the jungle. Staple gun.

0:45:46 > 0:45:49Little Pedro, make a secure environment for him.

0:45:52 > 0:45:54This is all for your benefit, Pedro.

0:45:54 > 0:45:56I hope you appreciate it.

0:46:00 > 0:46:03This is quite satisfying now,

0:46:03 > 0:46:06watching him try to get out, and he can't.

0:46:14 > 0:46:16Pedro!

0:46:18 > 0:46:20Pedro!

0:46:20 > 0:46:23Pedro? I think he's gone over.

0:46:23 > 0:46:27Pedro! He's definitely gone, hasn't he?

0:46:27 > 0:46:28Pedro!

0:46:30 > 0:46:32He's gone. He's done it.

0:46:32 > 0:46:33Yet again.

0:46:33 > 0:46:36I can't stand this.

0:46:36 > 0:46:39While Rick's struggling to keep Pedro in line,

0:46:39 > 0:46:43in Hampshire, mum Claire is battling to control her human charges.

0:46:43 > 0:46:48So we were just going to go through the contract again, just to revise.

0:46:48 > 0:46:50- "I will clean up after the dog." - CHILDREN TALK OVER ONE ANOTHER

0:46:50 > 0:46:52I picked up a poo this morning.

0:46:52 > 0:46:54Did you? You do. Charlie is very good.

0:46:54 > 0:46:57You have been a bit resistant, Amelia.

0:46:57 > 0:46:58No, but I picked up a poo this morning.

0:46:58 > 0:47:01Well, I know, but she's going to do more than one.

0:47:01 > 0:47:03My point is, if you find one you should pick it up.

0:47:03 > 0:47:07"We will spend less time on the TV."

0:47:07 > 0:47:08Yes. Yes.

0:47:08 > 0:47:11The contract is not worth the paper it's written on.

0:47:11 > 0:47:14It has served Amelia and Charlie's purpose

0:47:14 > 0:47:16in that we have now got a dog

0:47:16 > 0:47:21but I would say to any families out there - do not expect your children

0:47:21 > 0:47:23to do anything with the dog.

0:47:25 > 0:47:27Lola, don't chew the microphone.

0:47:27 > 0:47:30Don't chew the microphone.

0:47:31 > 0:47:33Lola, stop... No, don't try and bite me.

0:47:33 > 0:47:34Now 12 weeks old,

0:47:34 > 0:47:38Lola is fully vaccinated and ready for her first proper walk...

0:47:38 > 0:47:41Right, we're going to go out. We are going to go out.

0:47:41 > 0:47:43..which is also down to Claire.

0:47:43 > 0:47:45Come on. It's called going for a walk.

0:47:45 > 0:47:48You want to do this, believe me, you want to do this.

0:47:49 > 0:47:52Let's just carry you out here.

0:47:52 > 0:47:55On the pavement, Lola, pavement.

0:47:55 > 0:47:57If you just come towards me,

0:47:57 > 0:48:00then away from the stream...

0:48:00 > 0:48:03Lola, no! Just stop eating everything!

0:48:03 > 0:48:07I have very mixed feelings about Lola at the moment because

0:48:07 > 0:48:09she's such a pain so much of the time.

0:48:09 > 0:48:13I worry that we're not bonding as well as we could.

0:48:13 > 0:48:15I'm worried that the continuing

0:48:15 > 0:48:19feeling of we feel we've made a massive mistake and think -

0:48:19 > 0:48:21what have we done?

0:48:21 > 0:48:24What have we done getting a dog?

0:48:30 > 0:48:32In Scotland, ski patroller Will

0:48:32 > 0:48:36and 19-week-old Jura are facing a challenge of their own.

0:48:36 > 0:48:39You love coming to work, don't you, Jura?

0:48:39 > 0:48:41You love it.

0:48:41 > 0:48:43In four months' time,

0:48:43 > 0:48:48Jura will be evaluated by The Search And Rescue Dog Association.

0:48:48 > 0:48:51She'll only be invited to join their training programme

0:48:51 > 0:48:54- if she passes the initiation. - Come on, Jura, what's this?

0:48:54 > 0:48:55Come on, dig.

0:48:55 > 0:48:59It's kind of coming back to my fears that I first had when I first got

0:48:59 > 0:49:01the dog and the responsibility is on me.

0:49:01 > 0:49:04I would be kicking myself if I made a clanger and mucked up what's

0:49:04 > 0:49:06clearly a very, very good dog.

0:49:06 > 0:49:08So I need to have a recap with

0:49:08 > 0:49:12some of the more experienced handlers and find out where I'm at.

0:49:17 > 0:49:19Will has called in Tom Gilchrist and Brian Powell,

0:49:19 > 0:49:24search-and-rescue dog handlers with 25 years' experience between them.

0:49:27 > 0:49:30Hello. Hello.

0:49:30 > 0:49:31Who's this?

0:49:31 > 0:49:35Tom will be supervising Jura's test in the spring and knows exactly what

0:49:35 > 0:49:38she needs to learn to pass this first stage.

0:49:38 > 0:49:40We'll do a search with Meggie.

0:49:40 > 0:49:43I'll talk you through all the stages and hopefully it'll make sense.

0:49:43 > 0:49:46- Yeah.- And then you can apply it to Jura.

0:49:46 > 0:49:48Tom's fully qualified dog Meggie

0:49:48 > 0:49:51needs to find his colleague Brian who is

0:49:51 > 0:49:53hiding somewhere in the mist.

0:49:53 > 0:49:55Go find.

0:49:55 > 0:49:57Let's go.

0:49:57 > 0:49:59There she goes. Straight on.

0:49:59 > 0:50:01Straight away.

0:50:03 > 0:50:07Meggie is capable of searching for missing people across an incredible

0:50:07 > 0:50:09three-square-kilometre area.

0:50:10 > 0:50:13That's purely on scent that she's found him.

0:50:13 > 0:50:15- Yeah.- Look, there she is.

0:50:17 > 0:50:20Meggie's bark is a crucial indication to her handler

0:50:20 > 0:50:22- Tom that she's found someone. - Hear her?

0:50:22 > 0:50:25- Yeah.- If we walk in a different direction...

0:50:25 > 0:50:27We'll do that, we'll just walk this way...

0:50:27 > 0:50:29Watch what happens.

0:50:29 > 0:50:33An advanced dog like Meggie will also shuttle back and forth from

0:50:33 > 0:50:36the casualty to the handler to guide the rescue team in.

0:50:36 > 0:50:38- MEGGIE BARKS - Have you found him? Have you?

0:50:38 > 0:50:40Good dog, and show us.

0:50:40 > 0:50:42Now we've got to follow.

0:50:42 > 0:50:46She really does that, yeah.

0:50:46 > 0:50:48Oh, you clever dog!

0:50:48 > 0:50:50Oh, you're clever!

0:50:50 > 0:50:52Oh, you're clever!

0:50:53 > 0:50:58She didn't start barking automatically.

0:50:58 > 0:51:03- She started barking because I taught her to bark on command.- Yeah.

0:51:03 > 0:51:07When Brian was bravoing for me,

0:51:07 > 0:51:10when she came in he said,

0:51:10 > 0:51:12"Speak, speak, speak."

0:51:12 > 0:51:14And that's...

0:51:14 > 0:51:15MEGGIE BARKS

0:51:15 > 0:51:17Look.

0:51:17 > 0:51:20That's absolutely what you want.

0:51:20 > 0:51:22Meggie's reward is playtime.

0:51:25 > 0:51:27Now it's Jura's turn.

0:51:27 > 0:51:32She's too young to attempt to search using scent but must learn the rules

0:51:32 > 0:51:33- of the game.- What we're going to do

0:51:33 > 0:51:36is we're going to try a squeaky toy with her.

0:51:36 > 0:51:40You can see there's a... "Oh, what is this?"

0:51:40 > 0:51:45Training starts by enticing Jura with a toy that she can't have.

0:51:45 > 0:51:47We're going to give this to Brian.

0:51:51 > 0:51:54Find it. Find! That's it!

0:51:54 > 0:51:56What have you got, Jura?

0:51:56 > 0:51:59There you go!

0:51:59 > 0:52:01Once you've done enough of these little things,

0:52:01 > 0:52:04the dog actually realises, this is a great game.

0:52:04 > 0:52:07And eventually, you can actually do without the commands

0:52:07 > 0:52:09and the triggers, they just know. The only thing

0:52:09 > 0:52:13missing from your search sequence, Will, is an indication.

0:52:13 > 0:52:15So you've got to work on that.

0:52:15 > 0:52:19You've got to get Jura to bark, if you can.

0:52:19 > 0:52:23She's got to have some indication and a bark's the best.

0:52:23 > 0:52:28Will won't see Tom again until the day of the big test.

0:52:28 > 0:52:33So, spring time, we'll meet up and Brian will be somewhere out there

0:52:33 > 0:52:38and Jura's going to go and find him and indicate.

0:52:38 > 0:52:40Yeah. Challenge accepted!

0:52:40 > 0:52:42THEY LAUGH

0:52:42 > 0:52:44- Sweet.- You'll be good.- All right.

0:52:47 > 0:52:51There's a moral weight that comes with being a dog handler that

0:52:51 > 0:52:54you can't really shake off, you can't get rid of.

0:52:54 > 0:52:57All of a sudden he'll realise this is the real deal.

0:52:57 > 0:52:59My dog has got to do a job here

0:52:59 > 0:53:02and there could be somebody's life at risk

0:53:02 > 0:53:06and this dog could save it and it's up to me to do that.

0:53:06 > 0:53:10That was an amazing session, without a doubt.

0:53:12 > 0:53:15Yeah, just learnt so much.

0:53:15 > 0:53:18Tom has put the pressure on a bit now.

0:53:18 > 0:53:20I've got a deadline to meet and it's

0:53:20 > 0:53:22quite a big job up from what she's doing.

0:53:22 > 0:53:25I have a lot of faith that Jura can succeed

0:53:25 > 0:53:28in sort of passing Tom's assessment.

0:53:28 > 0:53:31She's the right dog for the job.

0:53:32 > 0:53:34Pressure's on me.

0:53:40 > 0:53:45Spanish rescue dog Pedro has been with the Clinks for four months.

0:53:47 > 0:53:51To start with, I had to put wire netting along here. Mesh.

0:53:51 > 0:53:54So far, Rick's retirement has been spent

0:53:54 > 0:53:57trying to Pedro-proof the garden.

0:53:57 > 0:53:59This is two layers here, right here,

0:53:59 > 0:54:01this bit, because he was getting underneath.

0:54:01 > 0:54:03This is a favourite spot.

0:54:03 > 0:54:05So now he can't get in there.

0:54:05 > 0:54:07His DIY skills are,

0:54:07 > 0:54:10if I'm to be brutality honest, quite non-existent.

0:54:10 > 0:54:13Because that was one of his favourite spots to get out,

0:54:13 > 0:54:15- I had to put a huge...- Yep, yep.

0:54:15 > 0:54:17Old fence post, actually.

0:54:17 > 0:54:20Well, it worked. I've seen Rick go outside numerous times with various

0:54:20 > 0:54:24different types of netting, wiring, fencing...

0:54:24 > 0:54:27Behind there is some old fencing. Green wire fencing.

0:54:27 > 0:54:30- I can see that.- But that in itself wasn't good enough,

0:54:30 > 0:54:33so then I had to put this other fencing up,

0:54:33 > 0:54:36which is why there's so many different materials.

0:54:36 > 0:54:38He then emerges from the trees,

0:54:38 > 0:54:40because he often lurks behind the trees,

0:54:40 > 0:54:43sort of victorious and I'm like, really?

0:54:43 > 0:54:45This is a lot of work. I hope you realise.

0:54:45 > 0:54:46SHE LAUGHS

0:54:46 > 0:54:49And then this is your piece de resistance.

0:54:49 > 0:54:52Yes. It's very secure and we can't use the gate any more.

0:54:53 > 0:54:57I think I can safely say the garden is now secure.

0:54:57 > 0:54:59I have said that many times before.

0:54:59 > 0:55:01- I fully understand. - What do you think, Pedro?

0:55:01 > 0:55:03- You tell us.- A lot of people won't believe me.

0:55:03 > 0:55:06I think it is, cos he's not escaped for a very long time.

0:55:08 > 0:55:12Now 11 months old, this rescue dog found in a bag of cement in Spain

0:55:12 > 0:55:15has finally found a loving home for life.

0:55:15 > 0:55:20Retiring used to worry me a lot because I thought I would never be

0:55:20 > 0:55:23able to fill my time during the day. What would I do?

0:55:27 > 0:55:28I hate that!

0:55:28 > 0:55:33Since Pedro entered our lives, he's changed what I do.

0:55:33 > 0:55:35I get out more often.

0:55:36 > 0:55:39If I could get him to do the chores, that would be even better,

0:55:39 > 0:55:41but I'm working on that.

0:55:41 > 0:55:45I do feel pleased that we've taken a dog that would probably have had a

0:55:45 > 0:55:50pretty miserable life on the streets and given that dog a happy home.

0:55:52 > 0:55:56And it's hard now to imagine that we've never had him.

0:55:56 > 0:55:58Yeah, he's very special. Very special.

0:56:05 > 0:56:09Our first four puppies have each come with unique challenges as they

0:56:09 > 0:56:12struggle to adapt to life with their new owners.

0:56:12 > 0:56:15I almost can't believe she's my dog.

0:56:15 > 0:56:16She's too perfect.

0:56:16 > 0:56:20In East London, calm has at last settled on the Tran family home.

0:56:22 > 0:56:26For me, this is like the dream, that they're on the bed together,

0:56:26 > 0:56:27they don't care about each other.

0:56:27 > 0:56:29He's also happy, which we want.

0:56:29 > 0:56:31We want Rocky to be happy.

0:56:31 > 0:56:32She's happy.

0:56:32 > 0:56:35And that's the end goal, isn't it?

0:56:35 > 0:56:39But Hannah has a last-minute bombshell to drop on Louise.

0:56:40 > 0:56:43- Don't be angry...- Oh, no, what are you going to tell me?

0:56:43 > 0:56:46I'm getting another puppy, in a week's time.

0:56:51 > 0:56:53What do you think?

0:56:53 > 0:56:55You look speechless.

0:56:55 > 0:56:58I want to get a playmate for Chloe.

0:57:03 > 0:57:06It wouldn't be the thing that I would recommend for you to do.

0:57:06 > 0:57:10I mean, have you actually thought about on a daily basis how you're

0:57:10 > 0:57:12going to manage it with her

0:57:12 > 0:57:15and another energetic puppy?

0:57:15 > 0:57:17No, I haven't, actually.

0:57:17 > 0:57:20It's something I just decided on the spur of the moment.

0:57:27 > 0:57:28Um...

0:57:29 > 0:57:31I was not expecting...

0:57:33 > 0:57:36..that a third dog

0:57:36 > 0:57:38was going to be on the cards.

0:57:39 > 0:57:42Why are you bringing another puppy into the mix?

0:57:42 > 0:57:45I've got to be honest, it is mainly for me.

0:57:45 > 0:57:47I just want another dog.

0:57:50 > 0:57:53The logic is that they're struggling with two, so bringing a third in...

0:57:55 > 0:57:59..just doesn't... It doesn't make sense to me.

0:57:59 > 0:58:01I hope I'm proved wrong.

0:58:05 > 0:58:07Next time...

0:58:07 > 0:58:08- HIGH PITCHED:- No!

0:58:08 > 0:58:11One novice owner tries before she buys...

0:58:11 > 0:58:12I love big dogs.

0:58:12 > 0:58:15This is so awesome!

0:58:15 > 0:58:16SHE LAUGHS

0:58:16 > 0:58:19..while another new arrival makes her mark...

0:58:19 > 0:58:21TODDLER CRIES

0:58:21 > 0:58:23Puppy bite me.

0:58:23 > 0:58:24Walk, Lola, heel.

0:58:24 > 0:58:27..and Claire and Lola reach breaking point.

0:58:27 > 0:58:29Lola, walk!

0:58:29 > 0:58:32I don't know what else to try!
