0:00:02 > 0:00:03My name's Steve Backshall.

0:00:05 > 0:00:07Whoa!

0:00:07 > 0:00:09And I'm on a mission, searching for...

0:00:09 > 0:00:11Deadly places.

0:00:11 > 0:00:12Deadly adventures.

0:00:12 > 0:00:14And deadly animals.

0:00:14 > 0:00:15Oi, you...!

0:00:17 > 0:00:21And you're coming with me, every step of the way!

0:00:25 > 0:00:27Aghhh!

0:00:30 > 0:00:34'12 months, 14 countries and three continents.

0:00:36 > 0:00:40'Deadly Pole To Pole was to be our biggest mission ever.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45'Travelling over 10,000 miles through the Arctic,

0:00:45 > 0:00:47'through North America

0:00:47 > 0:00:49'the Caribbean and South America...'

0:00:49 > 0:00:51Hola!

0:00:51 > 0:00:53'..before reaching our final destination,

0:00:53 > 0:00:56'Antarctica.'

0:00:56 > 0:00:59HE CHEERS

0:00:59 > 0:01:01'A year where everything has gone smoothly.'

0:01:01 > 0:01:04Agh, no! That's my script!

0:01:04 > 0:01:06Where did my sunglasses go?

0:01:06 > 0:01:09'Everyone's had fun...'

0:01:10 > 0:01:12LAUGHTER

0:01:12 > 0:01:13- THUD! - Ow!

0:01:13 > 0:01:15'..and no-one's got hurt.'

0:01:15 > 0:01:17Ow, that hurts!

0:01:17 > 0:01:18Whoa!

0:01:18 > 0:01:21'So, join me, for the best moments of Deadly Pole To Pole.'

0:01:21 > 0:01:23Ow!

0:01:23 > 0:01:25Oh, strewth!

0:01:25 > 0:01:28'After months of planning, we'd picked our route, north to south,

0:01:28 > 0:01:30'through the American continents

0:01:30 > 0:01:33'until we reached the end of our journey at the Antarctic Peninsula.'

0:01:38 > 0:01:41'We began with one of the most chilling encounters

0:01:41 > 0:01:46'we'd ever filmed, amongst the ice floes high up in the Arctic Circle.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49'We'd come to Svalbard...

0:01:50 > 0:01:53'..and boarded an ice-breaker to explore the pack ice

0:01:53 > 0:01:58'and go in search of the great white bear that rules this world.

0:02:00 > 0:02:04'These powerful predators feed on seals that haul out onto the ice,

0:02:04 > 0:02:07'punching down to get at them.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15'They're equally at home in land or in water and can swim for days

0:02:15 > 0:02:18'in water so cold that it would kill a human in minutes.

0:02:20 > 0:02:24'I was travelling amongst the bergs in a kayak

0:02:24 > 0:02:26'when a polar bear spotted me.

0:02:27 > 0:02:32'From miles away, he swam steadily and slowly in my direction

0:02:32 > 0:02:34'before abruptly changing his behaviour.'

0:02:36 > 0:02:37Looking right at me.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46Ooh. He's diving under it.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50'Bears sometimes dive underwater as they're about to begin hunting.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53'We need to watch him very carefully.'

0:02:53 > 0:02:55There he is.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59Watching me very, very closely.

0:03:02 > 0:03:06Looks like he might just swim... right in front of me.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18Hey there, big fella.

0:03:21 > 0:03:26He's OK. He's just keeping a very careful eye on me.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30He's just watching me.

0:03:30 > 0:03:34Wow. I certainly didn't expect to get that close.

0:03:49 > 0:03:50HE PUFFS OUT

0:04:04 > 0:04:07Just for a second there, he had me in his sights,

0:04:07 > 0:04:10and a lot of the bears in this part of the world

0:04:10 > 0:04:12will never have seen a human being before.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15Polar bears are one of the only wild animals

0:04:15 > 0:04:18that will deliberately target and hunt a human being.

0:04:18 > 0:04:20It's desperately rare, but it's something

0:04:20 > 0:04:23that you really need to have in the back of your mind at all times.

0:04:23 > 0:04:28'While wild icons such as this would be the focus of our expedition,

0:04:28 > 0:04:32'as we moved on we decided to try something new...

0:04:35 > 0:04:38'..focusing on even bigger, lethal forces of nature.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41'In Alaska, we set out to film something

0:04:41 > 0:04:44'with the power to move mountains.

0:04:46 > 0:04:50'Glaciers. Rivers of ice that have shaped the world we live in.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54'To get a taste of their deadly side,

0:04:54 > 0:04:57'we decided to explore the most dynamic part of the glacier.

0:04:57 > 0:04:58'The inside.'

0:05:02 > 0:05:04I'm going to get absolutely hammered here.

0:05:08 > 0:05:10Whoa.

0:05:19 > 0:05:23This would have to be one of the most hostile places

0:05:23 > 0:05:24you can ever be in.

0:05:26 > 0:05:30This is a place that human beings are simply not supposed to be.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35If I didn't have my drysuit,

0:05:35 > 0:05:37I wouldn't last seconds here.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41The water is only just above freezing

0:05:41 > 0:05:44and thundering down around my ears.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52Steve, are you OK down there?

0:05:52 > 0:05:53Uh.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56Oh, my fingers!

0:05:56 > 0:05:57I can't feel my fingers.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59Is he coming back, Johnny?

0:06:03 > 0:06:05Oh!

0:06:05 > 0:06:06Whoa!

0:06:09 > 0:06:11It's such an incredibly beautiful place...

0:06:12 > 0:06:16..but it's almost too frightening and too overwhelming to appreciate.

0:06:21 > 0:06:23I don't think I should go on any further.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25I think it'd just be too dangerous.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28I think, if I tried to head down there...

0:06:30 > 0:06:31..I wouldn't make it.

0:06:40 > 0:06:41Come on!

0:06:42 > 0:06:47'That was probably the most hardcore thing I've ever done on Deadly.

0:06:47 > 0:06:53'Having experienced the power of ice, it was now the turn of wind.

0:06:53 > 0:06:57'So, when in Texas, we wondered what it would be like to face a tornado.

0:06:57 > 0:07:01'But it's far too dangerous to experience these storms first-hand.'

0:07:01 > 0:07:06Instead of doing that, we decided to create our own...using this.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12The bit we're interested in is this - the exhaust.

0:07:12 > 0:07:14When this jet fires up,

0:07:14 > 0:07:17wind is going to come out of the back of here at well over 100mph,

0:07:17 > 0:07:20possibly considerably more, and I'm going to try

0:07:20 > 0:07:25and walk up the back and experience how it feels to be in a tornado.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32OK, coming up.

0:07:32 > 0:07:37Whoa-ho-ho! Argh! Oh, my goodness!

0:07:37 > 0:07:39'And any tornado will bring with it rain,

0:07:39 > 0:07:42'simulated here with buckets of water.'

0:07:48 > 0:07:51Argh! My ear defenders have gone!

0:07:51 > 0:07:53It's all right.

0:07:53 > 0:07:57'And, of course, high-velocity dust...

0:08:04 > 0:08:09'..and other flying objects, simulated here by 100mph tomatoes.'

0:08:11 > 0:08:12Ow!

0:08:16 > 0:08:20'Floored by a soft fruit and we still hadn't reached full force.'

0:08:23 > 0:08:26Do you want more power? I've still got more.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28Chuck them at me! I can take it!

0:08:30 > 0:08:32THRUSTERS ROAR

0:08:37 > 0:08:42'As he cranked it up to a Category 3 tornado, I'd had enough.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52'That was it for our Texas twister.

0:08:52 > 0:08:57'But as we carried on to Hawaii, we experienced the planet-forming

0:08:57 > 0:09:00'and landscape-smashing power of fire.

0:09:02 > 0:09:06'Here, the crew wanted me to measure the temperature of molten lava

0:09:06 > 0:09:09'with just some oven gloves for protection.'

0:09:16 > 0:09:18Erm, I am totally out of my comfort zone here!

0:09:18 > 0:09:21I have to admit, I'm a bit scared!

0:09:21 > 0:09:25I've come over all completely wussy.

0:09:25 > 0:09:28Erm, but I guess I should give it a go.

0:09:28 > 0:09:29OK.

0:09:31 > 0:09:33- Oh...- Oh!

0:09:33 > 0:09:37- Yeah.- Right, that's really, really hot.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39Erm, right, come on, Backshall.

0:09:44 > 0:09:45Agh!

0:09:48 > 0:09:50Agh!

0:09:53 > 0:09:55Have you got a reading?

0:09:55 > 0:09:58Er, 29... Whoa! 106...

0:09:58 > 0:10:01Arghhhh!

0:10:01 > 0:10:02Did you see how hot that went?

0:10:02 > 0:10:06Yeah, just, I mean... It was, like, 29 and it jumped up to over 1,000.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09- Just went "boom". - 'Way too hot to hang around.'

0:10:14 > 0:10:18'On Deadly, we've always tried to use the latest technology

0:10:18 > 0:10:21'to show you wildlife at its best.

0:10:21 > 0:10:25'We've used high-speed cameras to reveal the force of a tornado,

0:10:25 > 0:10:28'designed our own underwater CCTV to capture shots

0:10:28 > 0:10:31'of the rarely seen six-gill shark,

0:10:31 > 0:10:35'used night-vision cameras to uncover the secret world of snakes

0:10:35 > 0:10:37'and developed a time-slice rig

0:10:37 > 0:10:40'to reveal animal behaviour in a way never seen before.

0:10:43 > 0:10:44'The time-slice worked so well

0:10:44 > 0:10:47'that we set ourselves an even bigger challenge,

0:10:47 > 0:10:50'taking it to the Bahamas and underwater

0:10:50 > 0:10:52'to try and film the anatomy of a shark bite.'

0:10:52 > 0:10:56We've got our time-slice rig lined up here

0:10:56 > 0:10:59with Johnny and Duncan holding on to it.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02I'm going to try and bring a shark in

0:11:02 > 0:11:05and get it to bite right dead in the centre

0:11:05 > 0:11:09so the cameras can fire off all around it.

0:11:09 > 0:11:13And then, hopefully, we should be able to break down the bite

0:11:13 > 0:11:16into its constituent parts.

0:11:16 > 0:11:20It might sound easy, but trust me, it's not going to be.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37'Finally, we start to get the hang of it.

0:11:37 > 0:11:39'Our plan is coming together.'

0:11:39 > 0:11:41Yes!

0:11:43 > 0:11:44Perfect!

0:11:44 > 0:11:48'Once in the sweet spot. We filmed several bites

0:11:48 > 0:11:52'and then went topside to review what the footage had revealed.'

0:11:52 > 0:11:54OK, so...

0:11:54 > 0:11:58you can see the lemon shark coming in here.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00Oh, wow!

0:12:02 > 0:12:05That is incredible!

0:12:08 > 0:12:10'The jaws of the shark are very different

0:12:10 > 0:12:13'from the jaws you'd see in those of a mammal.'

0:12:13 > 0:12:16We have our upper jaw fused to our skull

0:12:16 > 0:12:19and only our lower jaw can move free.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22In a shark, it's completely different.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25And you can see that at this moment of the strike.

0:12:27 > 0:12:28There.

0:12:28 > 0:12:32'Both the shark's upper and lower jaws thrust forward.

0:12:32 > 0:12:36'Rows of fish-hook thin, pointed teeth can snag larger prey.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39'Smaller prey is just hoovered up.

0:12:42 > 0:12:46'And very lucky, I had a chain-mail suit on under my wetsuit.'

0:12:46 > 0:12:48Argh!

0:12:50 > 0:12:54'Sharks have always featured heavily on Deadly.

0:12:54 > 0:12:57'This series alone, I had a close shave with a tiger shark

0:12:57 > 0:13:00'and even had my camera stolen by one.'

0:13:00 > 0:13:02No, no, no, no, no! He's got my pole!

0:13:04 > 0:13:08'And to prove great whites aren't mindless man-eaters,

0:13:08 > 0:13:10'I swam with one outside of the cage.'

0:13:11 > 0:13:13He's coming back. Straight at us.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18'But not everything we've encountered has been predatory.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23'In Cuba, we stumbled on a beach where the wildlife

0:13:23 > 0:13:26'was among some of the friendliest I've ever seen.'

0:13:29 > 0:13:30- Look!- There's lots of them.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32Look at that!

0:13:32 > 0:13:35This is absolutely remarkable.

0:13:35 > 0:13:39There are wild animals scurrying towards me from all over the place.

0:13:39 > 0:13:43This is a Cuban hutia.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47It's a kind of rodent...oh! Oops!

0:13:49 > 0:13:52Essentially, a massive hamster.

0:13:52 > 0:13:54And they only occur in Cuba.

0:13:58 > 0:14:00Look at that!

0:14:00 > 0:14:04You are the most curious-looking creature.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07It's like someone's taken the head of a beaver

0:14:07 > 0:14:10and stuck it onto a wallaby.

0:14:10 > 0:14:16'But lazing around on paradise sands is sadly not what we're all about.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19'Instead, we took a journey into the underworld.'

0:14:26 > 0:14:30It really, really gives you the fear.

0:14:34 > 0:14:37'As we descended further into the bowels of the earth,

0:14:37 > 0:14:41'the temperature began to climb, and I could hear a faint noise.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49'It was hundreds of thousands of bats.'

0:14:49 > 0:14:51Unbelievable!

0:14:51 > 0:14:55Now that is what I call a Batcave.

0:14:56 > 0:14:59'But it was not the bats or the bugs that I was looking for.

0:14:59 > 0:15:02'Instead, we were there to find an animal

0:15:02 > 0:15:06'that's crawled deep into this cave to feed on the roosting bats.'

0:15:06 > 0:15:07I've got one, I've got one!

0:15:07 > 0:15:10I've got several, in fact. Oh, my God, there's loads of them!

0:15:10 > 0:15:12No way!

0:15:18 > 0:15:19So...

0:15:20 > 0:15:23..this is why we've come to this cave.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26Cuban boas.

0:15:26 > 0:15:29And they are pretty much everywhere.

0:15:29 > 0:15:33Just trying to keep my eyes on this snake, but I can't really see it.

0:15:33 > 0:15:36This is a really substantial snake!

0:15:36 > 0:15:39I wasn't really expecting to find anything this big,

0:15:39 > 0:15:42but I guess when there's this much food around...

0:15:42 > 0:15:45you can grow to be a really good size.

0:15:45 > 0:15:49And this snake is really fat. I can feel inside him

0:15:49 > 0:15:52several bats that he's feasted on, probably this evening.

0:15:54 > 0:15:56The Cuban boa.

0:15:56 > 0:15:59It may make its home in a nightmare of a place,

0:15:59 > 0:16:02but for me, this is a dream of a snake,

0:16:02 > 0:16:03and undoubtedly deadly.

0:16:07 > 0:16:10So, halfway through, the crew are happy

0:16:10 > 0:16:13and everything's still going to plan.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16MUSIC: Best Day Of My Life by American Authors

0:16:20 > 0:16:23'A few slips and trips, and some minor bumps.'

0:16:23 > 0:16:24Oof!

0:16:28 > 0:16:29Oh, no!

0:16:29 > 0:16:31I didn't want to do that!

0:16:31 > 0:16:35'But most importantly, everyone is still having fun.'

0:16:35 > 0:16:38This is like...hell on earth.

0:16:38 > 0:16:41I want to go home.

0:16:45 > 0:16:50We continued south, crossing the equator and on into Brazil.

0:16:55 > 0:16:58This vast continent is home to the one animal that's always managed

0:16:58 > 0:17:01to elude me every time I've gone in search of it.

0:17:04 > 0:17:09This is one last attempt to find a spotted cat that's rarely spotted.

0:17:12 > 0:17:15It's not just that I am incredibly unlucky.

0:17:15 > 0:17:18Jaguars genuinely are very, very difficult to see,

0:17:18 > 0:17:20and there are many reasons for that.

0:17:20 > 0:17:22One of those is that this is a creature of the shadows.

0:17:22 > 0:17:26They're fabulously camouflaged and expert at not being seen.

0:17:26 > 0:17:29But also they are rare, and one of the reasons for that

0:17:29 > 0:17:31is persecution by human beings.

0:17:31 > 0:17:34Thankfully, now they're starting to make a comeback,

0:17:34 > 0:17:38and here in the Pantanal, you have a really good chance of seeing them.

0:17:38 > 0:17:40Or so I've been told.

0:17:41 > 0:17:44'We've given ourselves just four days,

0:17:44 > 0:17:46'but early signs were good.'

0:17:47 > 0:17:50Oh! Oh, guys, come and have a look at this!

0:17:50 > 0:17:52Come and have a look at this!

0:17:54 > 0:17:56HE LAUGHS

0:17:56 > 0:17:58I don't quite know...

0:17:58 > 0:18:03how to get across the excitement that I feel right now.

0:18:03 > 0:18:07Because I've been waiting for this for a very, very long time.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10That is a jaguar print.

0:18:10 > 0:18:11Er...

0:18:11 > 0:18:16I'm so excited, I can't even really control myself!

0:18:18 > 0:18:21'But things were about to get even better.'

0:18:21 > 0:18:24Our driver has gone into absolute overdrive,

0:18:24 > 0:18:29because we've had a call that a jaguar's been spotted upstream.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31This could be our big chance!

0:18:39 > 0:18:42My heart is just going bam-bam-bam-bam-bam-bam-bam

0:18:42 > 0:18:45and I know that those capybara are too.

0:18:45 > 0:18:48'They're probably in the river because the jaguar was hunting them.

0:18:48 > 0:18:50'It might still be close by.'

0:18:50 > 0:18:53There's a jaguar over there.

0:18:53 > 0:18:55Over there, under that tree!

0:18:58 > 0:18:59This is amazing!

0:18:59 > 0:19:03The biggest carnivore of this part of the world

0:19:03 > 0:19:05is wandering along the bank ahead of us.

0:19:07 > 0:19:08There!

0:19:10 > 0:19:13I can't believe it! My first-ever jaguar!

0:19:15 > 0:19:18This is the king of cats.

0:19:23 > 0:19:26The jaguar has stopped hunting and has sat right on the river bank

0:19:26 > 0:19:28under a tree, and she's grooming.

0:19:28 > 0:19:32She's using that rasping tongue to clean her fur.

0:19:37 > 0:19:39It's a staggeringly beautiful animal.

0:19:39 > 0:19:43'At last, I'd managed to film my jungle nemesis.

0:19:45 > 0:19:47'With luck seemingly on our side,

0:19:47 > 0:19:50'we decided to push things to the limit

0:19:50 > 0:19:53'with what was probably going to be our biggest challenge to date.

0:19:53 > 0:19:57'We headed south to Patagonia, our last stop in South America,

0:19:57 > 0:20:00'to film one of the ocean's top predators.'

0:20:01 > 0:20:04It is the orca, or killer whale.

0:20:09 > 0:20:14So this place is absolutely perfect for us as well as for the orca.

0:20:14 > 0:20:17Because they're going to be channelled into this one area,

0:20:17 > 0:20:20there's no way they can hunt to either side of us.

0:20:20 > 0:20:23We can sit here, we can watch and we can wait.

0:20:24 > 0:20:28Everyone's on tenterhooks, just the idea that any second,

0:20:28 > 0:20:31that black shape could break the surface.

0:20:31 > 0:20:36There are several young sea lion pups right up at the water's edge.

0:20:37 > 0:20:39Everything is in place.

0:20:41 > 0:20:44Yes! I've got one! I can see one!

0:20:44 > 0:20:46I can see an orca coming this direction!

0:20:46 > 0:20:48Wow.

0:20:51 > 0:20:53The stage is set.

0:20:53 > 0:20:56This could not be more perfect for them.

0:21:05 > 0:21:08Oh, so close! So close!

0:21:11 > 0:21:14The orca beached itself right up on the sands,

0:21:14 > 0:21:18but it was going for an adult sea lion and it just managed to escape.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24That was it! That was the moment we'd been waiting for.

0:21:25 > 0:21:30The incredible surge of force and power

0:21:30 > 0:21:34driving an animal that's many, many times right up onto the beach.

0:21:36 > 0:21:38But also, I guess it's all the more thrilling

0:21:38 > 0:21:42for the fact that that sea lion managed to hold its own.

0:21:42 > 0:21:44It managed to escape with its life.

0:21:49 > 0:21:51I have to say that that was worth

0:21:51 > 0:21:53travelling halfway round the world for.

0:21:53 > 0:21:55And despite the fact that this time

0:21:55 > 0:21:58the orca came up empty-handed and didn't manage to find a meal,

0:21:58 > 0:22:02there is surely nobody on the planet who can doubt

0:22:02 > 0:22:05that the killer whale is deadly.

0:22:08 > 0:22:12'The intelligence, size, speed and power of the killer whale

0:22:12 > 0:22:15'makes it THE apex ocean predator.

0:22:15 > 0:22:19'But it's not only big guns like orca and jaguars

0:22:19 > 0:22:21'that deserve to be on Deadly.

0:22:21 > 0:22:25'There's plenty of room for the weird and wonderful.'

0:22:25 > 0:22:27It's a hairy armadillo!

0:22:28 > 0:22:31'A scuttling, snuffling tank.'

0:22:35 > 0:22:37It's a biggie!

0:22:37 > 0:22:40'In North America, it was the hellbender, or snot otter,

0:22:40 > 0:22:42'that won us over.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46'And the smallest animal we filmed on our expedition,

0:22:46 > 0:22:48'in the forests of Hawaii...'

0:22:51 > 0:22:54I don't know if you're going to be able to see this with the camera,

0:22:54 > 0:22:58but lying along the edge of this leaf here,

0:22:58 > 0:23:02lying perfectly flush with it and exactly the same colour,

0:23:02 > 0:23:04is a caterpillar.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07And believe it or not, this is what I'm considering

0:23:07 > 0:23:09as our next Deadly contender.

0:23:12 > 0:23:14'To see this mini-beast in action,

0:23:14 > 0:23:18'we need to use some specialist kit.

0:23:18 > 0:23:21'A high-speed macro camera.

0:23:21 > 0:23:24'A macro window on its miniature world.'

0:23:30 > 0:23:31HE LAUGHS DISBELIEVINGLY

0:23:34 > 0:23:36'These carnivorous caterpillars' strikes

0:23:36 > 0:23:39'are triggered when their unsuspecting prey

0:23:39 > 0:23:41'wander too close to their tail end.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44'Their pincer-sharp legs raise into the air,

0:23:44 > 0:23:46'forming a stabbing basket

0:23:46 > 0:23:49'which envelops the bug in a deadly embrace.

0:23:52 > 0:23:56'It's blisteringly quick - all over in a tenth of a second.

0:23:58 > 0:24:00'Weird, wonderful,

0:24:00 > 0:24:03'and the very definition of deadly.

0:24:06 > 0:24:10'At last, after a year of adventure that had seen us travel

0:24:10 > 0:24:12'from the frozen Arctic through the heat of the Tropics

0:24:12 > 0:24:16'and down to the frozen south, we reached our final destination.

0:24:16 > 0:24:18'The Antarctic peninsula.

0:24:27 > 0:24:31'And we'd saved the best till last. I was going to try and dive

0:24:31 > 0:24:35'with one of the top predators of these freezing waters.'

0:24:35 > 0:24:38I think I heard breathing. Oh, oh, oh!

0:24:38 > 0:24:42What was that? Did someone see that? I saw a breath at the surface.

0:24:43 > 0:24:46Leopard seal, off the end of that iceberg. Do you see it?

0:24:46 > 0:24:48It's huge!

0:24:50 > 0:24:52No way!

0:24:54 > 0:24:56See, see, see? He's right here.

0:25:08 > 0:25:10That is a monster.

0:25:10 > 0:25:13I'm not sure I want to get in the water with that!

0:25:19 > 0:25:22'This is a predator that can literally

0:25:22 > 0:25:24'thrash a penguin out of its own skin.

0:25:26 > 0:25:30'But I'd come halfway round the world. I couldn't back out now.'

0:25:33 > 0:25:35Looks like it might finally happen.

0:25:35 > 0:25:39The adrenaline is absolutely singing round my body.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41Right there, right there.

0:25:41 > 0:25:42Right behind you.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52'If you haven't got visual, he's coming towards you now.'

0:25:52 > 0:25:54Oh, I see him!

0:25:55 > 0:25:58I see him! He's massive!

0:26:01 > 0:26:04That is the most extraordinary sight.

0:26:04 > 0:26:08A leopard seal, just showing off her expertise.

0:26:08 > 0:26:11Look at that, barrel-rolling around,

0:26:11 > 0:26:13pirouetting in front of us.

0:26:13 > 0:26:16Unbelievable!

0:26:22 > 0:26:24Where's she gone? Has anyone got eyes on?

0:26:27 > 0:26:28Come up a little bit, come up.

0:26:32 > 0:26:34There she is, she is.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36Wow!

0:26:38 > 0:26:41She's kind of getting bolder each time she approaches.

0:26:41 > 0:26:45Each time it's just a little bit closer.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53Big show of teeth there, look at that.

0:26:54 > 0:26:57When an animal shows off its teeth like that and blows bubbles,

0:26:57 > 0:27:00it's not yawning!

0:27:00 > 0:27:02It's showing off what it can do.

0:27:03 > 0:27:07'She's just letting us know that this is her world, not ours.'

0:27:09 > 0:27:12There's no doubt this animal could do me an awful lot of damage.

0:27:16 > 0:27:17Wow!

0:27:18 > 0:27:21I think it's time for us to head for the surface.

0:27:21 > 0:27:23Oh, my goodness.

0:27:34 > 0:27:37That's one of the most exhilarating and frightening experiences

0:27:37 > 0:27:40of my entire life.

0:27:42 > 0:27:45'We've spanned the planet with all things Deadly,

0:27:45 > 0:27:48'and you've been with us every step of the way.

0:27:48 > 0:27:53'But so has one ocean-wandering giant - the humpbacked whale.

0:27:58 > 0:28:01'We saw them first at the start of our expedition, in the high Arctic.

0:28:05 > 0:28:08'Then in Alaska, spouting like cannonfire.

0:28:08 > 0:28:11'Utterly awe-inspiring.'

0:28:11 > 0:28:13Oh, my goodness!

0:28:16 > 0:28:20'In Hawaii, I swam alongside them, sharing the Big Blue.

0:28:23 > 0:28:26'And in Antarctica, they joined us one last time.'

0:28:27 > 0:28:28WHOOSH

0:28:28 > 0:28:30Oh!

0:28:34 > 0:28:38The sound they make as they come to the surface,

0:28:38 > 0:28:40it hits you right in your heart.

0:28:42 > 0:28:47An incredible finale to an incredible expedition.
