0:00:23 > 0:00:26Filmed over a year, all over Scotland,

0:00:26 > 0:00:29these two films are a snapshot of our lives.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33We don't claim to represent this generation...

0:00:33 > 0:00:37..but we do know what it's like being 16.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53Your parents expect you to act like an adult,

0:00:53 > 0:00:58but they will still treat you, and see you, as a child.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00There's an overwhelming sense that the future is coming.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03It feels always unstable.

0:01:03 > 0:01:07You are making life decisions here.

0:01:13 > 0:01:14It's a big year for us.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16For all of us.

0:01:26 > 0:01:30Older people probably look down on our generation

0:01:30 > 0:01:34and think that we just know absolutely nothing.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37People can have a stereotypical image of us

0:01:37 > 0:01:39which kind of makes them think they can't trust us

0:01:39 > 0:01:41with bigger responsibilities.

0:01:41 > 0:01:45I guess at this age you think of so many great things

0:01:45 > 0:01:47and so many fantastic ideas

0:01:47 > 0:01:51but you kind of think that now's not my time.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54But now SHOULD be our time.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59My name's Ida McVarish.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03I live in the depth of the Highlands,

0:02:03 > 0:02:06a place most have not heard of that goes by the name of Morar,

0:02:06 > 0:02:10which sounds a bit too much like Mordor, if you ask me.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15It's a terrible place filled with a never-ending torrent of rain,

0:02:15 > 0:02:19too much trees, mud and not enough people.

0:02:19 > 0:02:23It's in an almost constant state of cold.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26If we ever had real sunlight, I'm pretty sure we would shrivel up

0:02:26 > 0:02:29and burn like some sort of Highland vampires.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33I'm not the popular kid or the pretty kid at my school,

0:02:33 > 0:02:35I'm not even one of the smart kids.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37I'm just me - the slightly odd,

0:02:37 > 0:02:42easily ignored kid with too much ambition and determination,

0:02:42 > 0:02:47and a weird love for screamo, metal, rock music and the colour black.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50I don't fit in much, but I couldn't care less.

0:02:50 > 0:02:54I will get out of this place after completing my education,

0:02:54 > 0:02:57and I'm pretty sure I'll end up vowing to never return.

0:02:57 > 0:03:02Other than that, I'm just like any other teenager, I guess -

0:03:02 > 0:03:06I spend too much time online, I eat when I'm bored,

0:03:06 > 0:03:08and school sucks.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25This is my brother.

0:03:25 > 0:03:26His name's Kian.

0:03:26 > 0:03:27SHE LAUGHS

0:03:29 > 0:03:31We don't talk.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35We just sort of stand here.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40Like, we don't have a proper bus stop or anything, so if it rains

0:03:40 > 0:03:44we have to stand here in the rain for ten or 15 minutes

0:03:44 > 0:03:45or whatever.

0:04:18 > 0:04:20BELL RINGS

0:04:21 > 0:04:23CHATTER

0:04:26 > 0:04:30If the prelims went great, and your scores were pretty much close

0:04:30 > 0:04:34to your target, then you don't have anything to worry about,

0:04:34 > 0:04:39and your bright future that you have planned is unfolding before you.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42There are some of you, though, where there's quite a considerable gap

0:04:42 > 0:04:45between what you thought you could do,

0:04:45 > 0:04:49or what you want to do, and what you actually achieved in the prelim.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52My grades weren't the best they could've been.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55Like...I'm hoping to get better in the actual exams.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58I think I need to both, like,

0:04:58 > 0:05:03readjust my expectations and work harder.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05You will leave school eventually,

0:05:05 > 0:05:08and for some of you that's coming up really quite fast.

0:05:08 > 0:05:09What we want to do

0:05:09 > 0:05:14is get everybody to the end of their school education

0:05:14 > 0:05:18with the ability to choose,

0:05:18 > 0:05:20for the rest of their life,

0:05:20 > 0:05:23to do things that they are happy with.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28I know if I do get into university,

0:05:28 > 0:05:32I'm going to have to have, like, five jobs just to be able to pay,

0:05:32 > 0:05:35to stay in university.

0:05:35 > 0:05:37I'll probably end up homeless in a sewer.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45The biggest sources of stress in a teenager's life,

0:05:45 > 0:05:48realistically, is school.

0:05:48 > 0:05:52You're constantly being forced to work and being forced to stress.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55You need to work and work and if you don't work, you won't get a job,

0:05:55 > 0:05:57you won't do well, you won't make money...

0:05:57 > 0:06:02At this age, you're expected to choose what subjects

0:06:02 > 0:06:08you're going to do, which will then determine which jobs you can do,

0:06:08 > 0:06:12and you're meant to know what job you WANT to do when you leave school.

0:06:14 > 0:06:21I know that I will work hard to achieve what I want to achieve,

0:06:21 > 0:06:26and sometimes it scares me to think that I might not, you know.

0:06:26 > 0:06:28How will I feel?

0:06:28 > 0:06:34I think what scares me the most would be me sitting my exams,

0:06:34 > 0:06:38like, trying so hard to pass them.

0:06:38 > 0:06:42If I can get into college, I can get a really big change in my life.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45I think my mum and my family would be really proud of me.

0:06:47 > 0:06:51You are making life decisions here...

0:06:52 > 0:06:55..even though you haven't even lived most of your life.

0:06:55 > 0:06:59Wow, that's scary. But, yeah.

0:07:12 > 0:07:14My name's Brandon.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19I live in a small flat in Cumbernauld...

0:07:21 > 0:07:23..with my mum,

0:07:23 > 0:07:25my mum's dog and my mum's pet snake.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28That's me when I was three years old.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31A rascal then and I have been ever since.

0:07:33 > 0:07:37I don't hate school, but I'm just bored with it now.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40Teachers moan at me all the time.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46I've been going through really angry phases the now,

0:07:46 > 0:07:47and I don't know why.

0:07:49 > 0:07:51Sometimes I feel like no-one listens to me.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59You look a bit nervous, there's no need to be nervous -

0:07:59 > 0:08:02- you've been in this office a few times before, haven't you?- Aye.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06Well, it's come to that time, Brandon, where you've to make

0:08:06 > 0:08:07- a decision about your future, eh? - Yes.

0:08:07 > 0:08:11So I understand that you've made an application to college,

0:08:11 > 0:08:13- is that right?- I have.

0:08:13 > 0:08:15I'd like to go into motor vehicle maintenance.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17I've always had an interest in cars.

0:08:17 > 0:08:20You've been to the college for an interview, haven't you?

0:08:20 > 0:08:22That's a really positive step.

0:08:22 > 0:08:26So four years at secondary school, Abronhill High School.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28Good times, some tough times as well.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31I think that's true for most young people,

0:08:31 > 0:08:35but life outside of school has been tough for you as well, hasn't it,

0:08:35 > 0:08:37with your mum and her situation.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40And that has had an impact,

0:08:40 > 0:08:44- sometimes particularly, for example, on your timekeeping, hasn't it?- Yes.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46Sometimes she can get up and be in so much pain

0:08:46 > 0:08:47she can't move out of her bed

0:08:47 > 0:08:50until 12 or one o'clock in the afternoon, and sometimes even

0:08:50 > 0:08:54when I get in after school she can still be lying in her bed in pain.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57So I need to do stuff like, I need to shower her,

0:08:57 > 0:08:59or take the dog out for her

0:08:59 > 0:09:02or help her in and out the shower,

0:09:02 > 0:09:04make dinner for her, dress her,

0:09:04 > 0:09:08make sure she's got plenty of food and water,

0:09:08 > 0:09:12do the dishes and that - just chores and that in the house.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15You've been through most things that some people never

0:09:15 > 0:09:18go through in their lives, and you're only 15,

0:09:18 > 0:09:24so you've been a credit to your mum and to yourself.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30My mum's got a condition called hypermobility syndrome,

0:09:30 > 0:09:34which means her joints can dislocate very, very easily.

0:09:34 > 0:09:36She's in constant pain throughout the day

0:09:36 > 0:09:38and I have to do a lot for her.

0:09:40 > 0:09:46What we want to do today is to push on with the argument for evolution,

0:09:46 > 0:09:50that suggests that belief in God is a non-starter.

0:09:50 > 0:09:54If scientists are right, all of us started in Africa,

0:09:54 > 0:09:56and you're all black.

0:09:56 > 0:09:57LAUGHTER

0:09:57 > 0:09:59Think about this -

0:09:59 > 0:10:02Europeans have noses like that.

0:10:02 > 0:10:04LAUGHTER

0:10:04 > 0:10:05They do!

0:10:05 > 0:10:08If you were living in a place which was humid,

0:10:08 > 0:10:10some jungles in Africa or somewhere,

0:10:10 > 0:10:13and you're trying to breathe through that, you'll have difficulties.

0:10:13 > 0:10:16But if you have a nostril like that...

0:10:18 > 0:10:19..no problem.

0:10:21 > 0:10:25You adapt to your environment.

0:10:25 > 0:10:31When things get tough, the weak, young or sick, injured, they die.

0:10:31 > 0:10:35It's just a fact. The strongest animals will survive.

0:10:35 > 0:10:37Robbie, get the lights, my son, will you?

0:10:38 > 0:10:42- That's the fastest land animal that we know, and it's the...- Cheetah. - Cheetah, yes.

0:10:42 > 0:10:4370 miles an hour.

0:10:43 > 0:10:47TV NARRATOR: 'Individuals having any advantage, however slight,

0:10:47 > 0:10:50'over others will have the best chance of surviving

0:10:50 > 0:10:51'and procreating their kind.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57'Natural selection or survival of the fittest...'

0:11:03 > 0:11:07You kind of do need to stick up for yourself in this place, like,

0:11:07 > 0:11:11people that are weak, they won't survive, they'll get singled out.

0:11:11 > 0:11:13But if you just keep yourself to yourself,

0:11:13 > 0:11:17and talk to people and don't be cheeky, you'll probably survive.

0:11:17 > 0:11:19See if you bullied someone and call them names

0:11:19 > 0:11:22and they just say something, they're just going to keep doing it, but

0:11:22 > 0:11:26if you stick up for yourself, they might not bully you as much.

0:11:27 > 0:11:32It's just some people don't fit in as well as other people do.

0:11:39 > 0:11:44Basically, where I live, loads of people don't like me.

0:11:45 > 0:11:49And basically I stand out, and they don't like that.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52I guess that means I'm not a normal teenager.

0:11:53 > 0:11:57I do tend to not go with trends and I just do what I want,

0:11:57 > 0:11:59but I still worry about the fact

0:11:59 > 0:12:01that people think something funny of me

0:12:01 > 0:12:03because I'm not wearing certain clothes or

0:12:03 > 0:12:06I don't have certain ideas or I'm into certain issues.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09I've kind of accepted that not everyone's going to like me,

0:12:09 > 0:12:13and there will be people in life who just, I don't get on with,

0:12:13 > 0:12:18and I just need to deal with that and kind of ignore those people.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21You have the most popular with everyone following them about,

0:12:21 > 0:12:24and you have the people that don't have that many friends that

0:12:24 > 0:12:25find it hard in school.

0:12:27 > 0:12:34Growing up, we all want to be the best, and do as well as we can.

0:12:35 > 0:12:39'I guess that it's like a race, almost.'

0:12:50 > 0:12:51'Hi, I'm Natalie.

0:12:52 > 0:12:56'I'm 16 and have three brothers, which makes life quite eventful.

0:12:58 > 0:13:00'I enjoy spending time with my family.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03'I also really enjoy spending time with my brilliant

0:13:03 > 0:13:05'friends from school.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09'I am an extremely determined person.

0:13:09 > 0:13:13'Many teachers have advised me to sit four Highers, but I am sitting five.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17'I don't like to be held back or underestimated.

0:13:18 > 0:13:22'Naturally, I would like one of those dream jobs earning lots of money

0:13:22 > 0:13:23'and travelling the world.

0:13:25 > 0:13:28'Singing is one of my favourite pastimes, along with books,

0:13:28 > 0:13:31'watching quiz shows with my family, and making jewellery.

0:13:33 > 0:13:35'I would also really like to help other people, which is

0:13:35 > 0:13:40'partly why I want to adopt children, as well as have children of my own.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43'I also enjoy raising money for charities.'

0:13:43 > 0:13:44APPLAUSE

0:13:50 > 0:13:53As you now know, I'm Natalie.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57And as you may already know, I can't see particularly well.

0:13:58 > 0:14:02I've been asked to speak to you today about my experiences

0:14:02 > 0:14:04of losing sight, and living with that loss.

0:14:05 > 0:14:09I lost my sight officially at the age of nine,

0:14:09 > 0:14:12though I started the sight loss process about a year before.

0:14:13 > 0:14:17I had a brain tumour called a craniopharyngioma which had started to grow

0:14:17 > 0:14:19and push up on my optic nerves.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23Naturally, this caused a great deal of pain,

0:14:23 > 0:14:26but it also caused me to be sick almost every time I ate.

0:14:28 > 0:14:31The doctors, however, believed I was lying about my sight

0:14:31 > 0:14:34loss in order to receive more attention.

0:14:34 > 0:14:37They told my parents that I was psychologically blind,

0:14:37 > 0:14:39not actually blind.

0:14:39 > 0:14:42By the time an ophthalmologist discovered the truth,

0:14:42 > 0:14:45the tumour had almost destroyed my optic nerves.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49The subsequent operation lasted 12 hours,

0:14:49 > 0:14:53and put my parents through more worry than I think I will ever know.

0:14:54 > 0:14:58The tumour was successfully removed, but I was left with hardly

0:14:58 > 0:15:01any vision, and an inactive pituitary gland.

0:15:02 > 0:15:07I am actually extremely lucky. I have my family and friends

0:15:07 > 0:15:09around me, to help me.

0:15:10 > 0:15:14Many people don't have that, so please

0:15:14 > 0:15:18donate, because every penny in the pot helps to make a difference.

0:15:26 > 0:15:30I feel close to tears, frankly, cos that was really difficult,

0:15:30 > 0:15:33more difficult than I was expecting emotionally.

0:15:36 > 0:15:40'I don't want to be seen as any different to anybody else'

0:15:40 > 0:15:46and quite often I am mistaken for sighted.

0:15:46 > 0:15:50'It reassures me that I look no different.

0:15:50 > 0:15:56'Being a girl, I'm quite stereotypically fashion conscious,'

0:15:56 > 0:16:00and I don't think, "Oh because I can't see exactly what I'm wearing,

0:16:00 > 0:16:03"nobody else can," I'm not that narrow-minded.

0:16:06 > 0:16:08But I am shallow enough to care about it.

0:16:14 > 0:16:15My hair used to be ginger,

0:16:15 > 0:16:20then I dyed it kind of blueish/ greenish, so the colour of the sea.

0:16:22 > 0:16:26And then I dyed my fringe pink, and a bit of the underneath pink.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30I quite liked that.

0:16:30 > 0:16:32You want to be seen as different, you don't

0:16:32 > 0:16:38want to become somebody who's just copied the latest fashion

0:16:38 > 0:16:40image because that's what everyone else is doing.

0:16:40 > 0:16:44'There are some girls at my school who are perfect, in my eyes.

0:16:44 > 0:16:46'But the majority of us aren't.'

0:16:47 > 0:16:50I think the only person you should try and fit in with,

0:16:50 > 0:16:55and the mould you should try and fit is the one you set yourself.

0:16:55 > 0:17:02When the summer is over, I want to get pink underneath the blackish,

0:17:02 > 0:17:06have a purple fringe with blue through it, that goes into the pink.

0:17:06 > 0:17:08That'd be cool.

0:17:08 > 0:17:09SHE LAUGHS

0:17:18 > 0:17:19'Hi, my name's David.

0:17:21 > 0:17:23'That's me walking my dog with my brother and sister.'

0:17:27 > 0:17:29We live in a small village in Dumfries.

0:17:30 > 0:17:33It's an idyllic setting to grow up and live in.

0:17:35 > 0:17:38In the eyes of a kid, there's adventure everywhere, places

0:17:38 > 0:17:41for den building in the summer and hills for sledging in the winter.

0:17:44 > 0:17:46'We all get along reasonably well,

0:17:46 > 0:17:49'but I won't deny that brothers and sisters can't help but fight.'

0:17:49 > 0:17:51Stu, no phones at the table.

0:17:51 > 0:17:54'My family are really supportive of everything I do,

0:17:54 > 0:17:59'and they are willing to help me in any way possibly to achieve what I want.

0:17:59 > 0:18:02'Which generally means my mum's turned into a free taxi service.'

0:18:04 > 0:18:06I really enjoy coming to school.

0:18:06 > 0:18:09If you're going to spend the best part of 12 years getting

0:18:09 > 0:18:12'an education, you might as well try and make the most of it.'

0:18:13 > 0:18:15'I'd like to go into politics when I'm older,

0:18:15 > 0:18:18'and possibly run my own business, but that would have to wait

0:18:18 > 0:18:20'until after I've been to university.'

0:18:20 > 0:18:22I think politics is really important

0:18:22 > 0:18:25and it's a shame that more young people don't really take an interest.

0:18:26 > 0:18:28I'm running as a candidate to become

0:18:28 > 0:18:32a member of the Scottish Youth Parliament. Fingers crossed.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35I've spoken to your class already

0:18:35 > 0:18:38but I'll just outline a few of my points already just so you remember.

0:18:38 > 0:18:39If I can find the sheet!

0:18:39 > 0:18:42I should know it off by heart by now, I've done it about 20 times.

0:18:45 > 0:18:49Right, um, some of the points I'd like to bring up, to create

0:18:49 > 0:18:53maximum homework limits to prevent unnecessary stress, to introduce

0:18:53 > 0:18:57practical lessons like carpentry, metal work and agriculture, and

0:18:57 > 0:19:03to reduce the age limit on alcohol, to let pupil councils inside

0:19:03 > 0:19:06school communicate with the Scottish Youth Parliament representative.

0:19:06 > 0:19:10Has anybody got any questions? Nobody?

0:19:10 > 0:19:12This is the normal response.

0:19:12 > 0:19:15OK, if you can all log on and go on the Young Scot website.

0:19:17 > 0:19:19The Scottish Youth Parliament does have quite

0:19:19 > 0:19:21a lot of influence on what is done in the UK.

0:19:21 > 0:19:23It's argued quite a bit that it was them

0:19:23 > 0:19:27that mean we can ultimately vote in the referendum for independence.

0:19:30 > 0:19:32I voted for David White because he's from the school

0:19:32 > 0:19:34and I liked what he was trying to promote.

0:19:34 > 0:19:37- Today I voted for David White. - David White.

0:19:37 > 0:19:41David... Oh, I forgot his last name.

0:19:41 > 0:19:44Well, he's quite responsible, and he does a lot for the school already.

0:19:44 > 0:19:46He's always going on about it.

0:19:46 > 0:19:48I know him quite well and I think he's a lovely person.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50I read everyone's portfolios.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53I looked through them in detail, I read them a few times,

0:19:53 > 0:19:55and after some discussion with friends,

0:19:55 > 0:19:57we all decided David would be the best candidate.

0:19:57 > 0:19:58I've not voted.

0:20:00 > 0:20:01Neither have I.

0:20:02 > 0:20:05David is a hard-working man. He knows what he's doing

0:20:05 > 0:20:08and he's kind of the voice for the pupils here.

0:20:08 > 0:20:11He's my mate's big brother,

0:20:11 > 0:20:14so that's one reason why I voted for him.

0:20:19 > 0:20:21It's something I've wanted to do since the last one,

0:20:21 > 0:20:24'it was a couple of years ago since the election was here,

0:20:24 > 0:20:27'but I was too young then. I was in first or second year.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30'So it's been quite a long term ambition

0:20:30 > 0:20:32'to be in the Scottish Youth Parliament.'

0:20:32 > 0:20:37And tonight I find out whether I've won the election or lost the election,

0:20:37 > 0:20:40and I've got to prepare my speech for them.

0:20:40 > 0:20:42They've asked that I prepare a five-minute speech

0:20:42 > 0:20:47in case I win the election, so I've still got that to write today.

0:20:49 > 0:20:52What is politics? Wow.

0:20:52 > 0:20:56Sometimes I feel that politics is just old men arguing in a room.

0:20:57 > 0:21:01I think the role of government should be to ensure

0:21:01 > 0:21:05the prosperity of the country, to ensure that its people

0:21:05 > 0:21:09have the resources they need to build themselves a good life.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12I would like to have unbiased politicians that are doing things

0:21:12 > 0:21:15not for the money, not for staying in Cabinet,

0:21:15 > 0:21:17but rather for the benefit of the people.

0:21:17 > 0:21:22Politicians, they could be doing a bit better

0:21:22 > 0:21:28to really look at the way real people live their lives.

0:21:34 > 0:21:36'My name's Halima.'

0:21:39 > 0:21:41I live in the City of Discovery, Dundee.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46'But, to be honest, the place isn't quite as cool as the name suggests.

0:21:47 > 0:21:51'I know this because I've lived here for around eight years.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55'I always think of Dundee as being constantly cold,

0:21:55 > 0:22:01'even when it's not, but this could be because I was born in Nigeria,

0:22:01 > 0:22:05'and I always dream of going to live somewhere hot, like Bora Bora.

0:22:05 > 0:22:09'This city is too quiet, with very little things for teenagers to do.

0:22:11 > 0:22:15'But moving on from the negatives...

0:22:16 > 0:22:18'..I do genuinely enjoy living here

0:22:18 > 0:22:21'and I am thankful for the opportunities it has given me.'

0:22:21 > 0:22:24I just don't know if I'd call it home yet.

0:22:26 > 0:22:29'Being 16 is the best thing ever.

0:22:29 > 0:22:31'This is the time to try everything.

0:22:33 > 0:22:35'Well, most things anyway,

0:22:35 > 0:22:38'and to mainly not take things too seriously.

0:22:40 > 0:22:43'You've got to be able to express that inner child within you

0:22:43 > 0:22:46'once in a while, or in my case, every day.'

0:22:50 > 0:22:53The most important thing in my life is my family,

0:22:53 > 0:22:56and I'm very lucky to have a very big one,

0:22:56 > 0:22:59with four brothers and a whole load of cousins.

0:22:59 > 0:23:02'We meet up all the time to have a meal and talk

0:23:02 > 0:23:04'through everything that's going on.'

0:23:06 > 0:23:09I never want to leave. This place is like heaven on Earth.

0:23:09 > 0:23:14- Dundee?- I do like to be in Scotland, it's a nice environment to be in.

0:23:14 > 0:23:19I want to live where it's hot, where I can have a big house.

0:23:19 > 0:23:21THEY LAUGH

0:23:21 > 0:23:24You can have big houses here. I'll design it for you.

0:23:24 > 0:23:28But it would cost you a lot. I wouldn't mind living in Nigeria.

0:23:29 > 0:23:33Nigeria is the kind of place where you're either really rich

0:23:33 > 0:23:36or really poor, there's no middle ground.

0:23:36 > 0:23:40Divide in class. I just want equality.

0:23:40 > 0:23:43But that's never going to happen.

0:23:43 > 0:23:45- That's never going to happen. - That's not true.

0:23:45 > 0:23:48Do you know there's immense inequality living in Scotland?

0:23:48 > 0:23:50I know there's inequality everywhere,

0:23:50 > 0:23:54but what I'm trying to say is here you get the middle class.

0:23:54 > 0:23:56You can just have a normal life.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01You work really, really hard and you get back that hard work.

0:24:01 > 0:24:05But in Nigeria you have to fight against corruption and bureaucracy.

0:24:05 > 0:24:09All these problems. I want to work hard and get back what I worked for.

0:24:09 > 0:24:13For me, to be honest, if I was to move away from Scotland,

0:24:13 > 0:24:18I would probably still think Nigeria and Scotland are both home for me.

0:24:18 > 0:24:22- Yeah, Scotland is home for me. - So is Nigeria. Especially Dundee.

0:24:22 > 0:24:27'I was seven when I first moved over here, and it was a big'

0:24:27 > 0:24:30change for me, cos I didn't know what this country was like.

0:24:30 > 0:24:32Now I've grown up here,

0:24:32 > 0:24:35I know more about this place than I do about Nigeria.

0:24:35 > 0:24:38I think when I go back, when people finally see me

0:24:38 > 0:24:43after eight years they'd be like, "She's changed so much."

0:24:43 > 0:24:47It will be weird seeing everyone again, but I'm excited.

0:24:53 > 0:24:56'I think your environment shapes who you are a lot.

0:25:02 > 0:25:05'It was a good place to grow up as a child.

0:25:08 > 0:25:11'I think if I lived in a city as a child, I'd be less creative.

0:25:17 > 0:25:20'You could imagine more fantasy happening in a place like this.'

0:25:22 > 0:25:26In Glasgow, you couldn't really see people riding unicorns and stuff,

0:25:26 > 0:25:28but over here, you could.

0:25:31 > 0:25:33I remember a lot of being young,

0:25:33 > 0:25:36and it's all very colourful in my head as well.

0:25:36 > 0:25:38I used to enjoy dressing up,

0:25:38 > 0:25:42although the thought of dressing up now makes me cringe.

0:25:42 > 0:25:47I'd dress up in all these outfits. I had loads of princess outfits.

0:25:48 > 0:25:51I was one of those who was just happy.

0:25:51 > 0:25:54I wasn't thinking ahead or anything,

0:25:54 > 0:25:57I was just there in the moment, enjoying myself.

0:25:57 > 0:26:01No-one actually cared about anything back then,

0:26:01 > 0:26:03literally nothing.

0:26:03 > 0:26:06Nowadays, things are so different.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17'Because it's my birthday,'

0:26:17 > 0:26:20my mum thought we could go out for a wee while

0:26:20 > 0:26:22and go for lunch and play pool.

0:26:24 > 0:26:26Mate, my granny's better at pool than you.

0:26:26 > 0:26:28I'm not even kidding you on, man.

0:26:32 > 0:26:36'I'm going to leave school in August cos I'm going to try

0:26:36 > 0:26:40'and get into college, try and get myself a job.

0:26:40 > 0:26:42'I'm just fed up with school.'

0:26:47 > 0:26:49I'd like to go and do mechanics in college.

0:26:53 > 0:26:56Done an interview during the week.

0:26:56 > 0:27:00He said he'd let me know in the next couple of weeks.

0:27:00 > 0:27:04It felt right being there, cos I've grown up and that,

0:27:04 > 0:27:07it felt right to go and have an interview

0:27:07 > 0:27:10to see if I can go out into the world of work.

0:27:10 > 0:27:12I'm looking forward to it.

0:27:12 > 0:27:16I can start paying for my own things once I get a job...

0:27:18 > 0:27:21A house, furniture, somewhere to sleep.

0:27:25 > 0:27:29# Happy birthday to you

0:27:29 > 0:27:32# Happy birthday to you

0:27:32 > 0:27:34# Happy birthday, dear Brandon

0:27:34 > 0:27:36# Happy birthday to you! #

0:27:36 > 0:27:38You killed my caterpillar.

0:27:40 > 0:27:42- Happy birthday, mate.- Cheers.

0:27:50 > 0:27:51'When you're younger,

0:27:51 > 0:27:54'you kind of think you look forward to being this age.'

0:27:55 > 0:27:59Looking back, you wonder why you were looking forward to it.

0:27:59 > 0:28:02You have a bit erratic hormones and you're a bit grumpy

0:28:02 > 0:28:05and moody half of the time, whereas in your childhood

0:28:05 > 0:28:08you can have more fun and a bit more freedom,

0:28:08 > 0:28:10and you're less knowledgeable, which...

0:28:10 > 0:28:12They say ignorance is bliss.

0:28:14 > 0:28:16Your teenage years, they're kind of...

0:28:16 > 0:28:19They're that part where you're not a child any more

0:28:19 > 0:28:24but you're not quite out there as a working adult,

0:28:24 > 0:28:27and it feels rubbish.

0:28:38 > 0:28:40'You just feel sort of trapped.

0:28:42 > 0:28:45'These are the only places I can really go.

0:28:45 > 0:28:48'There's no other option there for me, currently.

0:28:48 > 0:28:52'There's no shops, I can't meet new people cos I know everyone already.'

0:28:55 > 0:28:57I know there's more to life than here,

0:28:57 > 0:28:59and I think that's what gets me down,

0:28:59 > 0:29:03cos I know that I'm not out there doing stuff and,

0:29:03 > 0:29:07like, everyone else expects me to be happy with here and this.

0:29:07 > 0:29:09And, I don't know.

0:29:09 > 0:29:12I want to be somewhere else, doing something different.

0:29:19 > 0:29:21'My dad gave me my computer

0:29:21 > 0:29:25'and I think that's when I became more interested in stuff.

0:29:28 > 0:29:32'Without the internet, I'd be bored out of my mind.'

0:29:36 > 0:29:41My generation is the one where we are getting all the new stuff,

0:29:41 > 0:29:44we can access so much at just the touch of a button.

0:29:44 > 0:29:52I think the internet and technology plays a huge part in our lives.

0:29:52 > 0:29:56The internet can play a bad role by taking over people's lives,

0:29:56 > 0:30:00spending too much time on the internet and not in the real world.

0:30:00 > 0:30:02I think that without the internet...

0:30:05 > 0:30:08..we wouldn't be, my generation wouldn't be who we are.

0:30:15 > 0:30:18You find people who have gone through hard times

0:30:18 > 0:30:20or have gone through amazing times,

0:30:20 > 0:30:23who have done some really inspirational things,

0:30:23 > 0:30:27and it helps you almost reconsider your own life,

0:30:27 > 0:30:31it helps you realise there are other people out there

0:30:31 > 0:30:36who have dreams or fears or hopes or even are failing at something.

0:30:36 > 0:30:39Some YouTubers also grow up in isolated areas

0:30:39 > 0:30:44and you're like, well, they escaped, and they did something beautiful.

0:30:45 > 0:30:48Straight edge, that's pretty cool.

0:30:48 > 0:30:49'I've always been straight edge.

0:30:49 > 0:30:52'I've never drank alcohol, I've never smoked cigarettes,

0:30:52 > 0:30:54'I've never done drugs.'

0:30:54 > 0:30:57On YouTube, I follow Patty Walters, and I really like his style,

0:30:57 > 0:31:01I like the way he performs and he's just a really cool person in general.

0:31:01 > 0:31:04'They stopped seeming like my friends when they got drunk.

0:31:04 > 0:31:06'They weren't fun or nice people to be around.'

0:31:06 > 0:31:11I was talking to my friend about Patty Walters, my friend Kelly,

0:31:11 > 0:31:14and she was like, "Oh, well, he's in a band."

0:31:19 > 0:31:23This band, As It Is, are playing in Glasgow,

0:31:23 > 0:31:25so we've got tickets, got a place to stay,

0:31:25 > 0:31:28just need to wait for them to come.

0:31:28 > 0:31:32I can't even... Ah, it'll be amazing!

0:31:39 > 0:31:41It's my physics prelim today.

0:31:43 > 0:31:46It's my last exam, I'm hoping it's going to be OK

0:31:46 > 0:31:49but I am really nervous.

0:31:51 > 0:31:54Especially because of the length of it more than anything.

0:31:54 > 0:31:58It's three hours and 45 minutes long

0:31:58 > 0:32:01so I'll probably be slightly dead by the end of it.

0:32:03 > 0:32:06'Braille does take longer to read.

0:32:06 > 0:32:08'There's much more of it.

0:32:08 > 0:32:11'To give it a bit of perspective on this,

0:32:11 > 0:32:16'a pocket-sized French dictionary was 32 volumes long.'

0:32:18 > 0:32:21'Prelims are really important to me because I need to be able

0:32:21 > 0:32:24'to prove to everybody that I made the right decision

0:32:24 > 0:32:26'when I picked five Highers,

0:32:26 > 0:32:31'and that it wasn't a humungous mistake on my part.'

0:32:33 > 0:32:35'I want all As.

0:32:35 > 0:32:38'I'll be disappointed with anything less.'

0:32:50 > 0:32:53This is us arriving in Nigeria now.

0:32:57 > 0:32:59We are having some family time now.

0:33:11 > 0:33:15Weddings in Nigeria are really, really big.

0:33:17 > 0:33:24Everything they wore and the way it was all set up was just amazing.

0:33:29 > 0:33:32'People were quite shocked at how we had all turned out,

0:33:32 > 0:33:36'cos they would have thought I'd be all proper Scottish

0:33:36 > 0:33:39'and they loved the fact that I was still...

0:33:40 > 0:33:43'..I still had my Nigerian self in me.'

0:33:44 > 0:33:46That's basically the wedding done now,

0:33:46 > 0:33:50all that's remaining is the wife to go back home with her husband.

0:33:50 > 0:33:54So that's my filming over and done with. Bye.

0:34:06 > 0:34:11My mum always tells me if I was to go back to Nigeria I'd be surprised

0:34:11 > 0:34:14with the amount of kids that can cook, and I never believed her,

0:34:14 > 0:34:17I just thought it was a way to get me to start cooking.

0:34:17 > 0:34:20But when I went back, everyone could cook,

0:34:20 > 0:34:23and I got a bit embarrassed when they were like,

0:34:23 > 0:34:26"Can you cook?" and I was like, "Not really. I can make noodles."

0:34:26 > 0:34:29And I tried making noodles and I burnt it,

0:34:29 > 0:34:31so that was quite embarrassing.

0:34:31 > 0:34:35So that's what has, like, made me want to cook more.

0:34:36 > 0:34:39She likes eating, so she must learn how to make it.

0:34:41 > 0:34:44Have you told them the name of the chicken you're going to make?

0:34:44 > 0:34:48- Peppered chicken. - In our language, we call it suya.

0:34:49 > 0:34:51Yeah, in Nigeria, suya.

0:34:55 > 0:34:57It's cold.

0:35:01 > 0:35:03I will leave you to it.

0:35:05 > 0:35:08I don't really know what I'm doing, but...

0:35:13 > 0:35:16I always classified myself as British.

0:35:16 > 0:35:20"I'm not Nigerian any more, I'm only Scottish,

0:35:20 > 0:35:23"I'm British, I'm only from here."

0:35:23 > 0:35:25But going back, I'm not.

0:35:25 > 0:35:30I'm still Nigerian. I miss the place.

0:35:30 > 0:35:35But I've picked up how to be a woman

0:35:35 > 0:35:38and just be mature, I'm more mature now.

0:35:40 > 0:35:43Yeah, I'm more mature, I've grown up.

0:36:00 > 0:36:02SHAVER BUZZES

0:36:02 > 0:36:05I think that's about me. Ready. I'm off to take over the world now.

0:36:05 > 0:36:09- Give me a ring when you find out. - Yes, I will do.

0:36:11 > 0:36:14Tonight's the announcement of who has won the election,

0:36:14 > 0:36:17who's going to be the MSYP for West Dumfries and Galloway.

0:36:17 > 0:36:21I think I've done as much as I can do to able to win.

0:36:22 > 0:36:24I'll write a list of thanks first

0:36:24 > 0:36:28and then I'll go about the rest of it. So, who should I thank?

0:36:28 > 0:36:30I hope you're going to thank your mum in this speech.

0:36:30 > 0:36:33What am I thanking you for again?

0:36:33 > 0:36:36- Driving.- OK.- Being your mum. Supporting you.

0:36:36 > 0:36:40Brother and sister? Nah.

0:36:40 > 0:36:46My siblings, Mum, Castle Douglas High School. Thank the whole school.

0:36:48 > 0:36:52I think at the moment I'm feeling slightly less confident

0:36:52 > 0:36:55cos I'm getting closer to the final event.

0:36:55 > 0:36:59It's 40 minutes until it starts and then it'll be all over,

0:36:59 > 0:37:04a couple of months of work will be either ruined or it'll pay off.

0:37:24 > 0:37:27I don't care. As long as I win. If I don't, I'll be gutted.

0:37:37 > 0:37:39Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.

0:37:39 > 0:37:44In the first round, David Blain, 223.

0:37:44 > 0:37:47Sam Glendinning, 239.

0:37:49 > 0:37:51And David White, 244.

0:37:51 > 0:37:58In round two the number of votes cast were David White, 373...

0:38:00 > 0:38:04..and Samuel Glendinning, 435.

0:38:05 > 0:38:08On that basis, I hereby declare

0:38:08 > 0:38:11that Samuel Glendinning has been duly elected.

0:38:11 > 0:38:13APPLAUSE

0:38:21 > 0:38:24- Hello. I'm a bit shocked. - LAUGHTER

0:38:24 > 0:38:29First of all, I'd like to say thank you to my parents,

0:38:29 > 0:38:32my friends, and the staff and pupils...

0:38:33 > 0:38:37Gutted. I'm feeling absolutely gutted.

0:38:37 > 0:38:40It doesn't really matter, coming second, I just still don't get it.

0:38:40 > 0:38:42APPLAUSE

0:38:46 > 0:38:48- Oh, well.- Never mind.

0:38:50 > 0:38:53David, you should apply for a job at Screwfix.

0:38:53 > 0:38:57No, I don't think Screwfix is going to be right.

0:38:57 > 0:39:00I don't think it's the end of me going into politics

0:39:00 > 0:39:02cos there's still a lot of things I can do.

0:39:02 > 0:39:04It's just a little bump in the road.

0:39:04 > 0:39:06'You don't get everything you go for,'

0:39:06 > 0:39:08which is why I go for lots of things.

0:39:11 > 0:39:16'I'll put up on Facebook to say I'm sorry I haven't been able to win.'

0:39:16 > 0:39:18They'll probably be a bit disappointed too but,

0:39:18 > 0:39:21you know, there's nothing I can do about it.

0:39:27 > 0:39:31If you're pausing to get a tear, I'm not going to cry!

0:39:35 > 0:39:38LAUGHTER

0:39:54 > 0:39:58I think they were song lyrics about someone being heartbroken

0:39:58 > 0:40:00and someone else leaving them,

0:40:00 > 0:40:05and how that every day was just a torment of memories.

0:40:05 > 0:40:08And I think one of the things they said was time passes

0:40:08 > 0:40:11but not fast enough, and that was one of the things in the song,

0:40:11 > 0:40:14and I was like, that's so sad, so I wrote it down.

0:40:17 > 0:40:20They don't really reflect me as a person,

0:40:20 > 0:40:23although there is the whole depression thing.

0:40:23 > 0:40:27Especially living over here, its quite easy to sit here

0:40:27 > 0:40:31and, like, it's so sad and lonely.

0:40:33 > 0:40:35It's just the place and it affects you,

0:40:35 > 0:40:37just the fact that you're not close to anyone.

0:40:37 > 0:40:39I went to a psychiatrist and they were like,

0:40:39 > 0:40:42"You're depressed." And I was like, "OK."

0:40:43 > 0:40:47'People think depression is you just crying in your room occasionally,

0:40:47 > 0:40:51'and loads of people don't actually understand what it really is,

0:40:51 > 0:40:54'despite the fact it's such a big thing.

0:40:54 > 0:40:56'It's just cos of a chemical imbalance in your brain

0:40:56 > 0:40:58'and everything, you just do think of yourself'

0:40:58 > 0:41:03as sometimes occasionally worthless. You're like, "Why am I here?"

0:41:03 > 0:41:07At some points it's really bad, other points it's OK,

0:41:07 > 0:41:10it's manageable, sort of under the surface.

0:41:10 > 0:41:13At this age, you can't really be like...

0:41:13 > 0:41:17There has been good times, cos I've had depression for, like...

0:41:17 > 0:41:20I've been properly majorly depressed for about a year,

0:41:20 > 0:41:24but it's sort of been there for two or three years,

0:41:24 > 0:41:26so you can't really look back and be like,

0:41:26 > 0:41:28"I remember when I did this, though."

0:41:28 > 0:41:31Because a couple of years back, I was seven.

0:41:31 > 0:41:34Maybe if you did have something good to remember,

0:41:34 > 0:41:39something to cling on to, that might help.

0:41:39 > 0:41:42But again I'm not sure cos it's not happened to me yet.

0:41:50 > 0:41:55I think young people are more prone to mental disorders

0:41:55 > 0:41:58or depression cos they're more vulnerable than adults,

0:41:58 > 0:42:00they have less experience with things,

0:42:00 > 0:42:02and they haven't built up coping mechanisms

0:42:02 > 0:42:04to deal with these kind of things.

0:42:06 > 0:42:07It's kind of...

0:42:09 > 0:42:14..a reflection on the pressure society puts on people

0:42:14 > 0:42:18my age and the expectations that they feel they have to live up to.

0:42:18 > 0:42:21'I get to a point where I can't take any more

0:42:21 > 0:42:24'and I just start lashing out.

0:42:24 > 0:42:27At that point, I don't care what I do,

0:42:27 > 0:42:32it's one of them moments where you turn off and cause carnage,

0:42:32 > 0:42:36and you don't care what happens until afterwards,

0:42:36 > 0:42:38when you have a look at what you've done.

0:42:38 > 0:42:43I am one of those people who eats more with stress

0:42:43 > 0:42:47and that has shown in my weight, and that doesn't make me feel very good.

0:42:47 > 0:42:51I don't know if it's just the teenage sort of phase,

0:42:51 > 0:42:55but I hate the way I get sort of either totally emotionless about

0:42:55 > 0:43:00something or really emotional and upset about stupid little things.

0:43:00 > 0:43:03Yeah, my experience is definitely hormones all over the place

0:43:03 > 0:43:07and emotions all over the place, and I really hate it, I can't stand it.

0:43:08 > 0:43:14# Are you moving much too fast?

0:43:14 > 0:43:19# And the good times that just don't last

0:43:19 > 0:43:22# If you're always on the go

0:43:25 > 0:43:28# Make an angel in the snow

0:43:29 > 0:43:32# And freeze

0:43:35 > 0:43:41# Do you feel like you're stuck in time?

0:43:41 > 0:43:46# For ever waiting on that line

0:43:46 > 0:43:49# If nothing ever moves

0:43:51 > 0:43:55# Put that needle to the groove

0:43:56 > 0:43:59# And sing... #

0:43:59 > 0:44:02I get bored really easily, so if I'm not motivated to do something,

0:44:02 > 0:44:04I'll be bored doing it.

0:44:04 > 0:44:06If you try a lot of things then you're bound to get some of them.

0:44:06 > 0:44:09And you'll eventually find the thing you like most.

0:44:09 > 0:44:13If you end up doing something you don't like, you won't have any fun.

0:44:13 > 0:44:16If you're not having fun, what's the point?

0:44:19 > 0:44:22# Is it a dream keeping you awake?

0:44:24 > 0:44:29# Is it the stillness that makes you shake?

0:44:29 > 0:44:31# If you need to know for sure

0:44:34 > 0:44:38# What's on the ocean's floor

0:44:38 > 0:44:40# Just sink

0:44:42 > 0:44:47# Are there dark parts to your mind?

0:44:47 > 0:44:51# Hidden secrets left behind?

0:44:53 > 0:44:56# Where no-one ever goes

0:44:57 > 0:45:01# When everybody knows

0:45:02 > 0:45:04# It's all right... #

0:45:13 > 0:45:15I forgot my lucky pen.

0:45:18 > 0:45:20'What's happening over there in Nigeria

0:45:20 > 0:45:26'has changed my opinions about how things are here.'

0:45:26 > 0:45:30With the kidnapping and bombings that have been going on in Nigeria,

0:45:30 > 0:45:35any one of those girls would do anything to get a proper education,

0:45:35 > 0:45:39'so I'm not going to take my education for granted

0:45:39 > 0:45:43'while others are wanting what I've got.

0:45:43 > 0:45:46'I have promised myself, by the start of fifth year,

0:45:46 > 0:45:49'all the way until the end, I will stick into school'

0:45:49 > 0:45:55and I will make my attendance above 90% no matter what.

0:45:57 > 0:46:01It will be hard for me but I have to do it.

0:46:01 > 0:46:04It's a promise and I don't break my promises.

0:46:15 > 0:46:18'In my prelims, I've done as well as I hoped,

0:46:18 > 0:46:20'that's four As and a B.

0:46:20 > 0:46:22'I would've preferred five As,

0:46:22 > 0:46:25'but I was only 2% off getting the fifth A in physics.'

0:46:26 > 0:46:30It's given my argument that I'm able to do five Highers more weight,

0:46:30 > 0:46:33and I'm really chuffed about that.

0:46:36 > 0:46:40That doesn't mean I'm going to completely slacken off

0:46:40 > 0:46:43and think that's it, I know there's a lot more work to go.

0:46:43 > 0:46:47But I feel in a better place, I feel a lot more relaxed.

0:46:54 > 0:46:57Thank you.

0:46:57 > 0:47:01'We've come to Glasgow because a band, As It is, that we love,

0:47:01 > 0:47:04'are going to be playing live.'

0:47:06 > 0:47:09Cities are fun-er than where I live. More happens.

0:47:16 > 0:47:18My mum was like, "OK, you can go shopping,

0:47:18 > 0:47:21"but meet up at this place, at this time.

0:47:21 > 0:47:24"Meet up every once in a while." She'll call every once in a while

0:47:24 > 0:47:27and be like, "Are you dying or are you OK?"

0:47:27 > 0:47:31It's like, "Yes, we're fine, please let us continue shopping."

0:47:31 > 0:47:36- Oh, my!- Whoa!- Oh, my God!

0:47:37 > 0:47:42'She'll take us to the gig and stuff, take us back from it.'

0:47:42 > 0:47:44And we've got freedom but not so much freedom

0:47:44 > 0:47:46that we can go absolutely crazy

0:47:46 > 0:47:49and wake up in someone else's house or something.

0:48:02 > 0:48:05This is a sponsored toilet cycle.

0:48:06 > 0:48:11'We are cycling pretty much a Portaloo on wheels 66 miles

0:48:11 > 0:48:13'to raise money for toilets in Kenya.

0:48:21 > 0:48:24'Uphills are a bit hard cos you've got so much weighing you down.

0:48:32 > 0:48:35'On a scale of one to ten of crazy things I've ever done,

0:48:35 > 0:48:37'I think this is probably about a seven.'

0:48:39 > 0:48:42- Cattle grid!- Oh, no!

0:48:43 > 0:48:46HIS TEETH CHATTER

0:48:46 > 0:48:48- Are we OK?- Yeah.

0:48:48 > 0:48:50THEY CLAP

0:48:54 > 0:48:56That's a pretty good fire.

0:48:56 > 0:49:00- I'm going to do it with a rock. - That you smash like a monkey.

0:49:04 > 0:49:07We estimate we've raised about £600 so far,

0:49:07 > 0:49:10which is enough to pay for one pit latrine,

0:49:10 > 0:49:13which is quite good, and we hope to raise a bit more.

0:49:16 > 0:49:20'Doing these things tries you and tries what you're made of,

0:49:20 > 0:49:22'and helps you see what you're capable of.

0:49:23 > 0:49:26'You get a great sense of achievement.'

0:49:31 > 0:49:35Two groups have a turn now, we're the second group,

0:49:35 > 0:49:40and it started raining on our turn, and it's not stopped since.

0:49:42 > 0:49:45We have been drenched but your skin's waterproof,

0:49:45 > 0:49:48so you can't get any wetter when you're wet.

0:49:51 > 0:49:53He just overtook us! Not very nice.

0:49:57 > 0:50:01'I think I am someone who has aspirations to become

0:50:01 > 0:50:04'something bigger than what they are now.

0:50:04 > 0:50:07'Quite a lot of excitement about the future,

0:50:07 > 0:50:09'I'm excited to see how everything will turn out

0:50:09 > 0:50:11'with my ambitions and dreams.

0:50:11 > 0:50:14'I think about what I'm going to do when I'm older,

0:50:14 > 0:50:16'who I'd like to be, what mountains I'd like to climb.'

0:50:19 > 0:50:21THEY LAUGH

0:50:21 > 0:50:25We've cycled 66 miles. Give me your money.

0:50:25 > 0:50:27THEY LAUGH

0:50:27 > 0:50:29Nicer than that, Sam!

0:50:31 > 0:50:33Thank you.

0:50:38 > 0:50:41You're looking for your tactile paving.

0:50:41 > 0:50:44- Can you feel it?- Yeah.

0:50:44 > 0:50:46And your pedestrian crossing is at your left.

0:50:48 > 0:50:50- We've got this traffic going.- Yeah.

0:50:50 > 0:50:54It's all one way, coming from my left.

0:50:56 > 0:50:58- That's it spinning.- Brilliant.

0:50:59 > 0:51:03Today is all about building up a mental map of town

0:51:03 > 0:51:06and learning a few of the shops,

0:51:06 > 0:51:10which I'll build on over a number of sessions.

0:51:11 > 0:51:14Big slabs and then feel this, yeah?

0:51:14 > 0:51:18- It goes cobbled.- I was eight when I started to lose my sight,

0:51:18 > 0:51:21and no eight-year-old, seven, six, anything younger,

0:51:21 > 0:51:24pays attention to where their mum drags them around shopping.

0:51:24 > 0:51:27And they don't care.

0:51:27 > 0:51:29But now I'm at the age where I do want to be doing things

0:51:29 > 0:51:32by myself, and I want to have that freedom, so I do care.

0:51:33 > 0:51:36It will be really nice to come into town

0:51:36 > 0:51:38when my friends aren't available,

0:51:38 > 0:51:41or when I don't want them to know what I'm getting them

0:51:41 > 0:51:43for birthday presents.

0:51:43 > 0:51:46Or I might just come in for a wander and enjoy the freedom.

0:51:46 > 0:51:49OK. I'm going to kick back, right.

0:51:49 > 0:51:51Ready when you are, Natalie.

0:51:53 > 0:51:59'I think I was the right kind of person to lose my sight,

0:51:59 > 0:52:02'in terms of I'm quite determined

0:52:02 > 0:52:07'and I was once described as emotionally resilient.

0:52:07 > 0:52:09'I think that's probably true.

0:52:10 > 0:52:13'I'm probably quite a happy person on the whole.'

0:52:25 > 0:52:27So you're looking forward to going to college?

0:52:27 > 0:52:29Aye, I cannae wait.

0:52:30 > 0:52:33- This is just a year's course you've got, isn't it?- Aye.

0:52:33 > 0:52:38- That's good, it'll be handy to have a mechanic in the family.- Aye.

0:52:40 > 0:52:44I want to try one year to see how it works around you as well.

0:52:44 > 0:52:47To see how I can still do my caring role.

0:52:47 > 0:52:51So, do you think you'll stay at home while you're at college?

0:52:51 > 0:52:55- Probably. If that's all right? - Of course.

0:52:57 > 0:53:00I want to move out but if I was to go and I got a phone call

0:53:00 > 0:53:05saying Mum's in hospital and she's done something worse than usual,

0:53:05 > 0:53:09I think I'd feel more so it's my fault because I've not been there.

0:53:09 > 0:53:11I've been like, "I want to go and live my own life, see you later."

0:53:11 > 0:53:13And that's me away.

0:53:13 > 0:53:18I don't want that to stop you from doing what you need to do.

0:53:18 > 0:53:22Sometimes I do feel guilty that you haven't had the childhood

0:53:22 > 0:53:27that you could've had, if I didn't have anything wrong with me.

0:53:27 > 0:53:29But that cannae be helped.

0:53:31 > 0:53:34- It's been hard sometimes, though. - We get through it.

0:53:34 > 0:53:38- But we make a good team, don't we? - Aye.

0:53:38 > 0:53:43We work together and it just makes life easier for both of us.

0:53:44 > 0:53:47I'm always going to be here, I'm never going to go anywhere.

0:53:47 > 0:53:53I maybe willnae be next door but I won't be too far away.

0:53:54 > 0:53:56That's good to know.

0:54:07 > 0:54:11# I'm not a vampire but I feel like one

0:54:11 > 0:54:15# I sleep all day because I hate the sun... #

0:54:15 > 0:54:17You need to remember to remind me about the tickets.

0:54:17 > 0:54:19If you forget the tickets...

0:54:19 > 0:54:21- They're right there. - SHE LAUGHS

0:54:21 > 0:54:25I've managed to get eyeliner everywhere but where it's needed.

0:54:25 > 0:54:28I don't really mind that my mum's taking me down or anything.

0:54:28 > 0:54:30She said it's a dodgy neighbourhood.

0:54:31 > 0:54:35- Is it?- She said it looks like a dodgy neighbourhood.- Oh, well.

0:54:35 > 0:54:39There's a higher chance that something bad will happen.

0:54:39 > 0:54:43- Like dying.- Like death or like drugs.

0:54:43 > 0:54:46There will be a higher chance of drugs in dodgy neighbourhoods,

0:54:46 > 0:54:49stuff like that. I've never taken any.

0:54:49 > 0:54:55I've got friends who do drugs but I don't really want to do drugs.

0:54:55 > 0:54:59I don't want to end up having my whole future taken away from me

0:54:59 > 0:55:03- because I get high. Or something like that.- It's really stupid.

0:55:05 > 0:55:08If you see a drug dealer, punch them.

0:55:08 > 0:55:11"If you do drugs, you will get pregnant and die!"

0:55:11 > 0:55:13THEY LAUGH

0:55:13 > 0:55:17"You're not allowed a boyfriend till you're 18...and out of my house!"

0:55:17 > 0:55:23I never got that one. I got, "Ida, are you interested in anyone?"

0:55:23 > 0:55:27"Er, no! Let's not have this conversation."

0:55:30 > 0:55:34I shall inform my mother of the fact that we're now leaving.

0:55:47 > 0:55:50- Are you all excited?- Yes!

0:55:57 > 0:56:01- Glasgow! - CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:56:02 > 0:56:06I regret to inform you that every single person in this band

0:56:06 > 0:56:09has made a very big mistake in their lives. We grew up.

0:56:09 > 0:56:13Growing up sucks. I don't know if you know that, but just don't do it.
