0:00:18 > 0:00:20DEBATE PLAYS I cannae stand it.

0:00:20 > 0:00:22Oh, dear.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27Maybe I'll move to Ibiza!

0:00:27 > 0:00:31For the last four months our cameras have been in homes across Scotland.

0:00:31 > 0:00:35Big and small, in town and in the country.

0:00:35 > 0:00:38And if things have been a bit heated round your dinner table,

0:00:38 > 0:00:42you can take comfort - you're not the only ones.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45I'm British. I was born British and...

0:00:45 > 0:00:47- You were born in Scotland. - I was born British.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50You were born in Scotland, so you're Scottish.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52So join us for the story of the summer

0:00:52 > 0:00:54as real Scots ponder...

0:00:54 > 0:00:59Independence? Mibbes Aye, Mibbes Naw.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02And I'll be like, "That's it. Let's get voting."

0:01:21 > 0:01:26Our cameras have spent the last four months in the homes of voters.

0:01:26 > 0:01:31From castles to council flats, we've followed Scots from wealthy

0:01:31 > 0:01:32and poorer backgrounds.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37MUSIC: West Coast by Lana Del Rey

0:01:42 > 0:01:44A few have always known how they'll vote,

0:01:44 > 0:01:48but most started the campaign with an open mind.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54Here's what you missed last time.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57Shipmates Frank and Stewart are still charting different courses

0:01:57 > 0:01:58on the referendum.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02Farmers Alison and Danny

0:02:02 > 0:02:04have been struggling to find the time to decide.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10Shaun thought he'd gone Yes, then wasn't so sure.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13At the castle, Simon was showcasing Scotland,

0:02:13 > 0:02:16but still a strong No,

0:02:16 > 0:02:20and Jessica swung to Yes but hasn't told her fiance.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23He said he'll divorce me if I vote Yes.

0:02:23 > 0:02:27And that's what you missed on Mibbes Aye, Mibbes Naw.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38It's now only weeks away from the big vote.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41Throughout the campaign we've given our voters some homework -

0:02:41 > 0:02:45campaign highlights to while away the nights.

0:02:45 > 0:02:50In mid-August it was round one between the two high heid yins.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53This is the best bit, actually, when they cross-examine each other.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55- I like that bit. - Oh, I've not seen this.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00And welcome back to the first referendum debate

0:03:00 > 0:03:04between First Minister Alex Salmond and Better Together leader

0:03:04 > 0:03:05Alistair Darling.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07Now you said you want a currency union.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09What's a currency union?

0:03:09 > 0:03:11Seems to me a like getting a divorce

0:03:11 > 0:03:13and keeping the same joint bank account.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15Why does he keep going on about the currency?

0:03:15 > 0:03:17It's like the only argument he's got.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20It's no, but it's the biggest argument.

0:03:21 > 0:03:25- SALMOND:- It's logical and desirable to have a currency union.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27If you go independent you've got fully independent.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30That's good, then, it means we'd that way we write off the debt

0:03:30 > 0:03:32that we've got, then.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35Well, my wife told me that the best thing to do is to do away

0:03:35 > 0:03:39with the pound because then I couldn't go to the pub.

0:03:40 > 0:03:44In that case you said something you knew was not true.

0:03:44 > 0:03:45I don't like that.

0:03:45 > 0:03:49So as a Scottish MP who disavows such things, who doesn't think

0:03:49 > 0:03:52that we're going drive on the right-hand side of the road

0:03:52 > 0:03:54or be susceptible to attacks from outer space...

0:03:54 > 0:03:56They're jokes, ya pillock!

0:03:57 > 0:03:59HE SNORES

0:03:59 > 0:04:00Huh?

0:04:00 > 0:04:03You got 12 minutes to ask questions of the other side

0:04:03 > 0:04:06and you waste your time asking did these people

0:04:06 > 0:04:08make sarky comments.

0:04:08 > 0:04:09Let's listen to the answer.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11Answer it, answer it!

0:04:11 > 0:04:15- That's my opinion. - There's no answers for it.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17Half the questions that people are asking won't be answered

0:04:17 > 0:04:20till we get the chance to get the chance to become independent.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22Until we're independent, that is when we'll find out.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25- It's no worth risking...- I don't care, it's a risk worth taking.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28- It is in my opinion.- You'll take a risk like that for him...- Yeah.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31- It is, yeah.- Cara any other kids we have.- Yep, uh-huh. Yep, totally.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34- Mm-hmm, yep. Mm-hmm. - You're havin' a laugh.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53It's a big day in the south-side of Glasgow,

0:04:53 > 0:04:56and at the heart of it is Ria Din.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02It's a Pollokshields-wide greenspace festival.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05It's pretty much free for all activities.

0:05:07 > 0:05:09There you are, that's the full programme.

0:05:09 > 0:05:13'I was born in Glasgow about mile and a half from here.'

0:05:13 > 0:05:19My heritage is that my dad came over from Pakistan in the mid '50s

0:05:19 > 0:05:22and my mum was born in the Gorbals but with Irish parents.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25So quite an interesting mixture.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30I think being mixed race, and, you know, there's no doubt about it,

0:05:30 > 0:05:33we suffered from racism as children

0:05:33 > 0:05:36and I just didn't feel that I belonged.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39You know, never really felt Scottish until recently.

0:05:41 > 0:05:46For Ria, the referendum represents a time for Scotland to take control.

0:05:46 > 0:05:48I think the time's right.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50I think we're mature enough as a nation.

0:05:50 > 0:05:54I believe people should vote Yes and I'm going to vote Yes.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57It's because I feel that this is the right thing to do.

0:06:08 > 0:06:10Just a few miles down the road,

0:06:10 > 0:06:14Laird Simon has been hosting the Crawford clan from North America.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25We were at Bannockburn Live and the pipe festival,

0:06:25 > 0:06:27and you ask me is that going to change my mind.

0:06:27 > 0:06:28No way would it change my mind.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31I still think Scotland's the best country in the world,

0:06:31 > 0:06:34but it doesn't need to be independent to be the best country in the world.

0:06:35 > 0:06:36The haggis!

0:06:51 > 0:06:55He may live in a castle, but there's no lazing about.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59Having waved off his guests,

0:06:59 > 0:07:03our modern laird is now test-running his up and coming annual mud run.

0:07:04 > 0:07:08A lot of people relatively local come enjoy the estate,

0:07:08 > 0:07:12have a laugh. A lot of people raise money for charities, lots of teams,

0:07:12 > 0:07:16so, lots of families... Nice time for everybody.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20No doubt in anyone's mind the way I'm going to vote.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23MUSIC: Nobody To Love by Sigma

0:07:56 > 0:07:59It's now only weeks away from the vote.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03Simon's race is run, but the campaign is picking up pace.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10All in all, it's been interesting.

0:08:10 > 0:08:14I think the campaign has been a little bit more...

0:08:15 > 0:08:17..er...

0:08:17 > 0:08:19spirited would be a polite way of putting it on the Yes side

0:08:19 > 0:08:21than the No side.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28Today Ria is out in Dunoon

0:08:28 > 0:08:31and comes across something rather interesting.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34Perhaps Alex Salmond's holiday caravan, I'm no very sure.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38We'll see. Could be.

0:08:38 > 0:08:39Alex, are you in there?!

0:08:42 > 0:08:43Nope, nope.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47MUSIC: No Place I'd Rather Be By Clean Bandit

0:08:48 > 0:08:52Today, Ria is visiting someone very special whom

0:08:52 > 0:08:56she hasn't seen in a very long time.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58KNOCKING

0:09:01 > 0:09:04Sheila!

0:09:04 > 0:09:06- How you doing, mate? - I'm all right.

0:09:06 > 0:09:07Great to see you.

0:09:07 > 0:09:11Sheila was an old mucker of Ria's back in Pollokshields.

0:09:14 > 0:09:16I'm just looking at my luscious locks

0:09:16 > 0:09:18and your bum out the window.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20Remember, that was at New Year's Eve.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23But I don't remember when. When d'you think that is?

0:09:23 > 0:09:24When and what for, I have no idea.

0:09:24 > 0:09:28I know. I was trying to think... I think I look about 35.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30We both look really young.

0:09:30 > 0:09:35The hairstyles may have changed, but the friendship certainly hasn't.

0:09:35 > 0:09:39And it's the big vote that's brought them back together.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41Been in France for 18 years.

0:09:41 > 0:09:45And, em...I think you could literally say

0:09:45 > 0:09:46it was like an epiphany.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48I think I woke up one day in March and just went,

0:09:48 > 0:09:52"Hold on a minute, this is...I can't stay here."

0:09:52 > 0:09:56I can't stay here while there's a referendum going on in my country.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58Exactly.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00"It doesn't matter, I'll stay at home here on Montpellier

0:10:00 > 0:10:04"and sip my red wine on the terrace and look at Sky TV with the news."

0:10:04 > 0:10:06And then, literally, one day I woke up

0:10:06 > 0:10:08and thought, "I can't do that."

0:10:13 > 0:10:17For Ria, there's also a sense of being at home for the first time.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21My mum also being a big sort, you know, had an Irish background

0:10:21 > 0:10:24and it was always Ireland you were was supposed to look to

0:10:24 > 0:10:27or my dad, you know, his nation was Pakistan.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30And I didn't feel part of Scotland.

0:10:30 > 0:10:34But, you know, particularly in the latter part of my adult life

0:10:34 > 0:10:37I've had the opportunity to feel part of Scotland.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39I've explored it in more recent years,

0:10:39 > 0:10:41which I didn't have the chance to do before.

0:10:41 > 0:10:45We do have a shared idea of social justice

0:10:45 > 0:10:46and that's critical for me.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48Em...

0:10:48 > 0:10:52I've been allowed to fulfil my ambition in Scotland,

0:10:52 > 0:10:55and I cannot think of anywhere else I would rather be.

0:10:55 > 0:10:56# When I am with you

0:10:56 > 0:11:01# There's no place I'd rather be. #

0:11:07 > 0:11:09Like Ria, Simon is passionate about Scotland,

0:11:09 > 0:11:12but lately, has been experiencing

0:11:12 > 0:11:14a rather uglier side of the referendum.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21As you can see, someone disagrees with our opinion.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24The sign got put up on Sunday morning,

0:11:24 > 0:11:28the black spray paint was done on Monday morning,

0:11:28 > 0:11:30less than 24 hours later,

0:11:30 > 0:11:35and then a few hours later, the blue paint was done.

0:11:35 > 0:11:37I think what's quite frightening about this is,

0:11:37 > 0:11:40speaking to a couple of folk in the village

0:11:40 > 0:11:44and they are of similar opinion to us, No Thanks,

0:11:44 > 0:11:47but they say they're scared to actually express their opinions,

0:11:47 > 0:11:49which I think is a really, really sad indictment

0:11:49 > 0:11:51to a civilised society -

0:11:51 > 0:11:56that you can't have an open debate and agree to differ from each other

0:11:56 > 0:11:58but still respect each other's views.

0:11:58 > 0:11:59It goes back to that thing,

0:11:59 > 0:12:03that you can't be passionately nationalistic

0:12:03 > 0:12:06in terms of Scotland as a nation and Scotland as a country

0:12:06 > 0:12:08and vote No Thanks.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22Shaun and his friend are voting for the first time,

0:12:22 > 0:12:25but Shaun's mind has been changing like the weather.

0:12:25 > 0:12:27Now I'm more for it, I think.

0:12:33 > 0:12:37Over at the salon where Shaun works, owner Leo has popped in

0:12:37 > 0:12:39to give his take to the virgin voters.

0:12:41 > 0:12:44I'm voting No - being involved in the business sector,

0:12:44 > 0:12:47there's too many questions needing to answered

0:12:47 > 0:12:49and in the debates

0:12:49 > 0:12:51they seem to answering questions with questions

0:12:51 > 0:12:53rather than giving the answers we want to find out.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56So you're voting Yes because your friends say their voting Yes?

0:12:56 > 0:13:01But that's not you voting Yes - that's you following the leader.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04But if I can't listen to the parliament or the government

0:13:04 > 0:13:05cos I don't understand what they say,

0:13:05 > 0:13:09I have to listen to friends and family and clients and you and everyone.

0:13:09 > 0:13:10But you listen to everyone,

0:13:10 > 0:13:12then after, you form your own opinion.

0:13:12 > 0:13:17But you've got to go with what you want for the economy, you know?

0:13:17 > 0:13:19I don't know what other people want.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22It is my opinion - I'm voting Yes

0:13:22 > 0:13:25because I think what I've heard and what I've listened to

0:13:25 > 0:13:28and what I've seen in the news, the whole combination of it all...

0:13:30 > 0:13:34For Leo, voting is clearly a hot topic.

0:13:34 > 0:13:36I think some of the younger generation

0:13:36 > 0:13:39is not taking it seriously as they should be

0:13:39 > 0:13:42because this is not just about voting because of a vote -

0:13:42 > 0:13:44this is about voting because of the future of the economy

0:13:44 > 0:13:47and the future of my kids and other people's kids.

0:13:47 > 0:13:50- INTERVIEWER:- Thinking of anyone in particular?

0:13:50 > 0:13:52HE LAUGHS

0:13:52 > 0:13:55I'm not thinking of anyone in particular

0:13:55 > 0:13:56but Shaun comes to mind.

0:13:56 > 0:13:58HE LAUGHS

0:14:00 > 0:14:02He's confusing me!

0:14:02 > 0:14:04It's not a matter of confusing you.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07I think, in order to make a proper decision,

0:14:07 > 0:14:10you've got to look at it as a whole.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13Look at what is Mr Salmond is saying,

0:14:13 > 0:14:16what the people at No are saying

0:14:16 > 0:14:17and then form your own opinion.

0:14:21 > 0:14:25Despite Leo's little pep talk, Devon is still uncertain.

0:14:25 > 0:14:29But perhaps a change of scene might help her decide.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32I'll be on holiday just before it.

0:14:32 > 0:14:34I'm just back in time for the voting,

0:14:34 > 0:14:37so when I go there, I won't really be round people

0:14:37 > 0:14:38who are talking about it,

0:14:38 > 0:14:41so I could probably just make my own mind up when I'm away

0:14:41 > 0:14:44and then come back with a clear head.

0:14:44 > 0:14:46That's it - so many have been saying to me, the past few weeks...

0:14:46 > 0:14:48- Over this side?- Over that way.

0:14:48 > 0:14:50More people have been saying to me, "No".

0:14:50 > 0:14:53At first, all my friends have been saying, "Yes",

0:14:53 > 0:14:54then the past couple of weeks,

0:14:54 > 0:14:56so many more people are saying, "No", now.

0:14:56 > 0:14:57That has been confusing me.

0:14:57 > 0:14:59But I think I'm going to stick to my guns.

0:14:59 > 0:15:04A client was saying today as well, you'll probably have a gut feeling.

0:15:04 > 0:15:07And you'll end up just going with that, so...

0:15:07 > 0:15:09Still waiting on that feeling!

0:15:09 > 0:15:10SHE LAUGHS

0:15:28 > 0:15:31Last time we saw farmer Danny and his wife Alison,

0:15:31 > 0:15:34they were run off their feet keeping the farm going.

0:15:35 > 0:15:37The truth is we haven't left the farm

0:15:37 > 0:15:38in the last wee while,

0:15:38 > 0:15:40so we probably haven't really had

0:15:40 > 0:15:41the opportunity to...

0:15:42 > 0:15:44- Talk much about it.- Yeah.

0:15:53 > 0:15:57Today, the couple are showing off the farm to fellow farmers.

0:15:58 > 0:16:01So what's the view in the big barn?

0:16:01 > 0:16:03I think the majority of people that I have spoken to

0:16:03 > 0:16:05from the farming community

0:16:05 > 0:16:08are in favour of the Better Together campaign.

0:16:09 > 0:16:13I've spoken to a few who are Yes voters

0:16:13 > 0:16:16and I think...there is definitely an element of peer pressure.

0:16:16 > 0:16:20If most farmers have made up their minds,

0:16:20 > 0:16:22the Milnes certainly haven't.

0:16:22 > 0:16:25She's playing her cards pretty close to her chest

0:16:25 > 0:16:27and I must admit I am too.

0:16:27 > 0:16:29You know, trying to double bluff her, maybe.

0:16:29 > 0:16:32I think our views are fairly similar.

0:16:32 > 0:16:36It doesn't matters to either of us if we vote differently.

0:16:36 > 0:16:38But I think, given we have the same moral values

0:16:38 > 0:16:43and the same beliefs about what the opportunities

0:16:43 > 0:16:45might look like for our children in the future,

0:18:57 > 0:18:58I don't know what they're saying

0:18:58 > 0:19:01cos you keep rabbling on about the same points over and over.

0:19:01 > 0:19:03I'm trying to get my points across to you.

0:20:12 > 0:20:16But I still think you're daft though.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18Why'd you think I'm daft, though?

0:20:18 > 0:20:19- You know why.- Why?

0:20:32 > 0:20:35- and I think it's the best decision for Scotland.- Alex Salmond knows...

0:20:35 > 0:20:38The referendum may have brought old friends together

0:21:27 > 0:21:29I think, for me,

0:21:29 > 0:21:32I'm not willing to take a risk,

0:21:32 > 0:21:36but I'm going to view it as rising to a challenge.

0:21:36 > 0:21:41And I've decided that it's not about following a pipe dream,

0:21:41 > 0:21:43it's about being ambitious

0:21:43 > 0:21:49and for that reason, I have decided that I am going to vote Yes.

0:21:49 > 0:21:50DANNY INHALES SHARPLY

0:21:50 > 0:21:53I believe in something better for Scotland.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16I think Scotland itself will cope quite comfortably,

0:22:16 > 0:22:22it's just whether or not, as a nation together,

0:22:22 > 0:22:25we should just stick together.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28When these eggs got thrown at Jim Murphy,

0:22:28 > 0:22:32that kind of put my back up a wee bit.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35I was a bit disappointed that people would be doing such a thing.

0:22:35 > 0:22:39I want everyone to get on together as a nation which we do just now.

0:22:39 > 0:22:43I suppose whichever way you decide to go,

0:22:43 > 0:22:47I can say with some level of confidence that I'm likely to

0:22:47 > 0:22:52be more passionate about the direction in which we go.

0:22:52 > 0:22:53I'm certainly passionate about it,

0:22:53 > 0:22:56I'm maybe just not such a high-risk taker as you potentially are

0:22:56 > 0:23:00because there is an element of risk, there's no question about it.

0:23:02 > 0:23:05Even though Alison has made her decision, Danny will wait

0:23:05 > 0:23:09and see what his gut ultimately tells him on the day.

0:23:18 > 0:23:21This is my old pal, Frank.

0:23:21 > 0:23:23Frank and Stewart have been chums for ever.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25They also run a business together.

0:23:25 > 0:23:29But their views on the referendum have been oceans apart.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32I never have tried to persuade Stewart and I never will.

0:23:34 > 0:23:38If he wants to listen to what I'm saying, it's fine.

0:23:38 > 0:23:42I still have, in the back of my mind, that we're stronger together.

0:23:42 > 0:23:45I'll just never listen to what he says.

0:23:51 > 0:23:52It's mid-summer in Shetland,

0:23:52 > 0:23:55which means it never gets dark.

0:24:25 > 0:24:27still think that it's...

0:24:27 > 0:24:29we're still a part of Scandinavia.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40Can Frank convince Stewart, a determined No,

0:24:40 > 0:24:44that Shetland is safe in an independent Scotland?

0:24:44 > 0:24:48I've always been in favour of independence for Scotland.

0:24:50 > 0:24:55So I knew exactly then what I know now,

0:24:55 > 0:24:58how I was going to vote so...

0:24:58 > 0:24:59But you're different.

0:25:01 > 0:25:06Well, yeah, because I'm not Scottish, Frank, I'm Shetland.

0:25:06 > 0:25:08It's part of Scotland, Shetland.

0:25:08 > 0:25:11It is, I ken that.

0:25:11 > 0:25:15Now, the way it's going for me now,

0:25:15 > 0:25:20I've been doing an awful lot of hard thinking about this,

0:25:20 > 0:25:24and...I ken nobody else from my house

0:25:24 > 0:25:27will agree with what I'm going to say,

0:25:27 > 0:25:29but I'm going to vote for it.

0:25:33 > 0:25:36I've spoken with you, this wee boy that's always given me good advice,

0:25:43 > 0:25:45And I'm voting for it.

0:25:53 > 0:25:57Over a summer, a baby can grow into a wee boy.

0:25:58 > 0:26:04People who don't even read the paper can end up excited about politics.

0:26:04 > 0:26:07We've followed a small sample of voters

0:26:07 > 0:26:10and their decisions don't tell us what Scotland will do.

0:26:10 > 0:26:15But maybe their experiences tell us something about this special summer.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17We've never voted before,

0:26:17 > 0:26:19I'd never watched anything to do with politics,

0:26:19 > 0:26:22hardly ever read the newspaper or nothing and I think it has.

0:26:22 > 0:26:24It's been dead interesting

0:26:24 > 0:26:26hearing different people's points of view and stuff.

0:26:26 > 0:26:27I'm the same as you.

0:26:27 > 0:26:29I've never ever thought about it before

0:26:29 > 0:26:31and this is the first time I've been on the roll

0:26:31 > 0:26:33and it is interesting

0:26:33 > 0:26:36and maybe it'll make us, in the future,

0:26:36 > 0:26:39vote more and take more of an interest.

0:26:39 > 0:26:42- Before, it was like we're not really interested at all.- I was not.

0:26:42 > 0:26:45You've got some folk saying I've heard enough, I want it over with.

0:26:48 > 0:26:50No, you cannae. What you going to do after this?

0:26:50 > 0:26:52What you going to tweet about?

0:26:52 > 0:26:54Well, the next exciting bit is the fallout from it,

0:26:54 > 0:26:59the negotiations, what the settlement's actually going to be.

0:26:59 > 0:27:02Whether it's Yes people villainising No

0:27:02 > 0:27:05or whether it's No people villanising Yes,

0:27:11 > 0:27:12without the fear of retribution.

0:27:12 > 0:27:17- It's interesting, the level of passion it has, actually.- Yeah.

0:27:17 > 0:27:20And the fact that it's going to be as close as it's going to be,

0:27:20 > 0:27:23it'll be interesting to see what happens after the vote

0:27:23 > 0:27:26cos there's going to be an awful lot of disappointed people, whichever way it goes.

0:27:31 > 0:27:35We're old hippies with the boat and we love that but...

0:27:35 > 0:27:40I have never been a hippie! Where you get this hippie from?!
