0:08:16 > 0:08:19it is actually stopping doing that stuff,

0:08:52 > 0:08:53like that.
0:08:53 > 0:08:56It covers everything up, so nothing shows.
0:08:56 > 0:08:59From then on, they can become full members of the church.
0:09:01 > 0:09:05'Because I've known them since they were very, very tiny babies,

0:09:08 > 0:09:11in their Christian walk, is just amazing for me.
0:09:11 > 0:09:14And so, I've kind of, like, personally invested in them.
0:09:14 > 0:09:15They're like my babies.
0:09:15 > 0:09:18Every single one of them. They're all my babies.
0:09:18 > 0:09:22And I just love 'em, so it is really exciting.

0:09:35 > 0:09:40I'm definitely quite nervous and anxious about it.
0:09:41 > 0:09:43But I'm also quite excited.
0:09:45 > 0:09:46That comes off.
0:09:46 > 0:09:49And this, there... There you go.
0:09:49 > 0:09:52From what other people have been telling me,
0:09:52 > 0:09:55at the end...
0:09:55 > 0:09:57it's quite overwhelming.
0:09:57 > 0:09:59You know, the experience, and...
0:09:59 > 0:10:02coming up through the water, what they felt.
0:10:02 > 0:10:06I feel like that's what I want.
0:10:06 > 0:10:10That's what I want. That's what I would like to feel myself.

0:10:11 > 0:10:13that's what I'm kind of looking forward to.

0:10:33 > 0:10:35is how it offers much more than religion.
0:10:35 > 0:10:38It's also about supporting a community.
0:10:38 > 0:10:42If people need help in the week, the bishop's wife, Sister Brown,

0:10:44 > 0:10:47I've had people come in that just needed something to eat...
0:10:49 > 0:10:52..and didn't have any money for shopping.
0:10:52 > 0:10:56If they're having some difficulties in their life,
0:10:56 > 0:11:00and they're in need of some support...
0:11:01 > 0:11:03..they will come in and ask.
0:11:03 > 0:11:05Some of them will say,
0:11:05 > 0:11:07"Look, is there anybody I could speak with now?"
0:11:07 > 0:11:10Others will say, "Can I make an appointment to see somebody?"
0:11:11 > 0:11:15Oh, there's a lot going on in churches that people...
0:11:15 > 0:11:17the average person would not be aware of.
0:11:17 > 0:11:21Father, we ask this mercy through your name...
0:11:21 > 0:11:24Annette has turned to the church for support in raising her son.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34She's been coming to church with Kai since he was born.
0:11:37 > 0:11:39I went there, but just to christen him, innit?
0:11:39 > 0:11:41And then I...kind of stayed.
0:11:41 > 0:11:43And I'm still there now.
0:11:44 > 0:11:46You christen them, and then you go and have a party,
0:11:46 > 0:11:48like if you get married.
0:11:49 > 0:11:50You know, you have a party after.
0:11:50 > 0:11:54But this is just dedicating them to God.
0:11:54 > 0:11:55To say, "Protect them."
0:11:56 > 0:11:58Oh, publicly, yeah.
0:11:58 > 0:12:00- INTERVIEWER:- Do you feel like he IS protected?

0:12:06 > 0:12:07Like...
0:12:07 > 0:12:09it says it.
0:12:09 > 0:12:12What made you stay? What made you keep going to church after that?
0:12:14 > 0:12:15Like...
0:12:17 > 0:12:20Cos after a while, you realise that you need to be there.
0:12:23 > 0:12:24And I don't know if...
0:12:25 > 0:12:31..for other people, all things just stay calm, or...
0:12:32 > 0:12:34..manageable...
0:12:34 > 0:12:38but, like, some stuff wasn't being manageable for me.
0:12:38 > 0:12:43And so it seemed like that was the only place to go to get some...
0:12:45 > 0:12:46..peace, I suppose.
0:12:50 > 0:12:54Like, there's people around me, friends or family.
0:12:54 > 0:12:58But...they can't really sustain you, they can't sustain you.
0:12:58 > 0:13:02- Hello. - Hi! Hello, Annette, how are you?
0:13:02 > 0:13:04- I'm fine.- Grab a chair.
0:13:04 > 0:13:06- Thank you.- How's Kai?
0:13:06 > 0:13:07- He's fine.- Yeah?
0:13:07 > 0:13:13But I just wanted to ask you what I should do in regard to...
0:13:15 > 0:13:17To...?
0:13:17 > 0:13:18Changing his school.
0:13:18 > 0:13:20Because he's been in behaviour issues,
0:13:20 > 0:13:24and he's been excluded and removed from one school, two schools,
0:13:24 > 0:13:25put in another school,
0:13:25 > 0:13:27so now they've put him at a pupil referral unit.

0:13:31 > 0:13:33And that's the problem.
0:13:33 > 0:13:36He will kick things, like the door, or the chair.
0:13:36 > 0:13:39He will pick up the chair, and throw it.
0:13:39 > 0:13:43- Now, I understand you've... You've got some of his past work?- Yes.
0:13:43 > 0:13:46- Here.- Reports and things like that you have for him?

0:13:49 > 0:13:52Yeah. For reception.
0:13:52 > 0:13:54This is Kai's work at seven?
0:13:54 > 0:13:56- Yeah.- That's his handwriting at seven?
0:13:56 > 0:13:59- Yes.- He wrote this by himself at seven?- When he was seven.
0:13:59 > 0:14:00Yeah.
0:14:00 > 0:14:04So it appears that he was working pretty good.
0:14:04 > 0:14:07Yeah, but in the middle, I don't know, he just...
0:14:07 > 0:14:08Something went amiss?
0:14:08 > 0:14:09- Yeah.- Mmm.
0:14:09 > 0:14:11I think I look after him very well.
0:14:11 > 0:14:13"Why are you angry? What are you angry about?"
0:14:13 > 0:14:15Then, that's what... I'm saying, "What are you angry about?
0:14:15 > 0:14:18"What, I don't feed you? I don't put clothes on your back?"
0:14:18 > 0:14:20- "I don't beat you." - No, that's not...- Yeah!
0:14:20 > 0:14:23There's a lot of issues that he may have.
0:14:23 > 0:14:26- I know that his dad is not here. - Yeah, no.- He's abroad.
0:14:26 > 0:14:31So he may well need to have that male person who is a father figure.
0:14:31 > 0:14:34Why does he react in that way when he gets angry?
0:14:34 > 0:14:36- OK.- What is it that triggers off?
0:14:36 > 0:14:39- So, can you do that?- I'd be more than happy to talk with him.
0:14:39 > 0:14:40The battle isn't lost.
0:14:40 > 0:14:43- OK.- I will tell you that - the battle isn't lost.
0:14:43 > 0:14:44Thank you.
0:14:45 > 0:14:47- INTERVIEWER:- So, what is that?
0:14:47 > 0:14:50This is from Lego Chima.

0:14:55 > 0:14:59It's been eight months since Kai was excluded from secondary school,
0:14:59 > 0:15:02and moved to a pupil referral unit.
0:15:02 > 0:15:04His future's hanging in the balance
0:15:04 > 0:15:08while he waits to hear when they'll find him another school.
0:15:08 > 0:15:10They said that I was uncontrollable
0:15:10 > 0:15:13cos I kept on messing around in classes and disturbing people.
0:15:15 > 0:15:19And because, with my anger, and I keep getting angry...
0:15:19 > 0:15:21and doing the wrong things when I do get angry.
0:15:22 > 0:15:24What did you think about that?
0:15:25 > 0:15:28It was fair, because I was getting angry over silly things,
0:15:28 > 0:15:30and doing the wrong things.
0:15:30 > 0:15:31But I also didn't want to leave.
0:15:33 > 0:15:36- Do you feel like you want another chance?- Yeah.
0:15:39 > 0:15:40What about church?
0:15:40 > 0:15:43- Do you like going to church?- Yeah.
0:15:43 > 0:15:46Lots of people pray for me, and also, there's, like,
0:15:46 > 0:15:50older children that look after me and make sure I'm all right.
0:15:50 > 0:15:54And...I'm kind of getting used to how long the services are.
0:15:56 > 0:15:58And do you believe in God?
0:15:58 > 0:15:59Yeah.
0:15:59 > 0:16:02Like, today, erm... we were coming...
0:16:02 > 0:16:04I had £3 in my pocket,
0:16:04 > 0:16:07and there was a man that was homeless in front of Tesco...
0:16:07 > 0:16:10and I gave him my £3.
0:16:10 > 0:16:12And when I got into Tesco,
0:16:12 > 0:16:15my mum picked up Oreos, and got me Oreos, so...
0:16:17 > 0:16:21God knows that you did a good deed, and he pays you back.
0:16:26 > 0:16:30The church building is maintained largely by its congregation,
0:16:30 > 0:16:32and leased from the Church of England,
0:16:32 > 0:16:34but it's showing signs of age.
0:16:35 > 0:16:39# And I will stand with Him on
0:16:39 > 0:16:42# That day... #
0:16:43 > 0:16:45Pastor decided...
0:16:45 > 0:16:48that we had to come up with some kind of fundraising
0:16:48 > 0:16:50in aid of the lift.
0:16:50 > 0:16:54Some of the elderlies cannot walk up the stairs,
0:16:54 > 0:16:57because of pain and other sickness,
0:16:57 > 0:16:59so the lift would be easier for them.
0:17:01 > 0:17:04- INTERVIEWER:- It smells amazing. - Thank you, my darling.
0:17:05 > 0:17:08That's my chicken, leave it to drain over here.
0:17:08 > 0:17:11So when it's finished, we can pour it out in this one.
0:17:11 > 0:17:14We have the good scotch bonnet here.
0:17:14 > 0:17:18Good scotch bonnet, so we're going to make them blend in,
0:17:18 > 0:17:21with some nice onions.
0:17:22 > 0:17:25Yes, how much is this?
0:17:25 > 0:17:27You can't be serious!
0:17:27 > 0:17:28£1.50?
0:17:30 > 0:17:34I don't want the discount - I want to pay for my things.
0:17:34 > 0:17:36Jamaican soul food.
0:17:36 > 0:17:38- Yes!- Ah... - LAUGHTER
0:17:38 > 0:17:41The Word, and food.
0:17:46 > 0:17:47Are you ready to give?
0:17:48 > 0:17:52This church relies overwhelmingly on donations from the congregation
0:17:52 > 0:17:54for its survival.
0:17:55 > 0:17:59Pentecostal churches usually ask members to pay a tithe,
0:17:59 > 0:18:02meaning 10% of their income.
0:18:02 > 0:18:05In reality, here, they give what they can.
0:18:05 > 0:18:09- This is my seed... - CONGREGATION:- This is my seed...
0:18:09 > 0:18:12- ..as I give it to you... - ..as I give it to you...
0:18:12 > 0:18:16- ..I expect harvest. - ..I expect harvest.
0:18:16 > 0:18:19- It may not come back... - It may not come back...
0:18:19 > 0:18:22- ..in monetary form... - ..in monetary form...
0:18:22 > 0:18:26- ..but however you bless me... - ..but however you bless me...
0:18:26 > 0:18:28..I will be satisfied.
0:18:29 > 0:18:32# Behold He comes
0:18:32 > 0:18:34# Riding on the clouds
0:18:34 > 0:18:36# Shining like the sun
0:18:36 > 0:18:39# At the trumpet call
0:18:39 > 0:18:41# Lift your voice... #
0:18:41 > 0:18:46The community gathering its own funds is the story of how this,
0:18:46 > 0:18:49and many other Pentecostal churches, were established.
0:18:50 > 0:18:53So, when they came out from the Caribbean to Britain,
0:18:53 > 0:18:58they believed that they could just walk into any church, sit down,
0:18:58 > 0:19:00and be accepted as a member.
0:19:01 > 0:19:02Well, they weren't.
0:19:05 > 0:19:09Christianity in general was not initially welcoming to us.
0:19:12 > 0:19:17But the churches weren't started as a protest against rejection.
0:19:18 > 0:19:23In their hearts, there was a Pentecostal fire.
0:19:23 > 0:19:26# Oh, Lord, you know
0:19:26 > 0:19:29# I have no friend like you... #
0:19:29 > 0:19:31They had to...
0:19:31 > 0:19:35find and plant these churches that would help them give expression...
0:19:36 > 0:19:38..to the God that they know...
0:19:39 > 0:19:41..and the faith that they had back home.
0:19:41 > 0:19:43Praise the Lord!
0:19:43 > 0:19:45They moved around to several halls,
0:19:45 > 0:19:48schools and church halls, and what have you.
0:19:49 > 0:19:54In the mid-70s, we found this place, that was derelict.
0:19:55 > 0:19:58Obviously, when we came in, it's not like what it is now.
0:19:59 > 0:20:01It was pigeon-infested -
0:20:01 > 0:20:07we cleared out one tonne of pigeon poo from the bell towers.
0:20:08 > 0:20:12And so, this is where we have been since 1977.
0:20:18 > 0:20:21One of the founding members of this church, Deacon Bair,
0:20:21 > 0:20:22has passed away.
0:20:25 > 0:20:29The generation of people that came here out of the Windrush
0:20:29 > 0:20:32came and made their living, made their contribution,
0:20:32 > 0:20:34but they're now passing on.
0:20:34 > 0:20:37Since I've been here, in the last 18 months,
0:20:37 > 0:20:39I must have done over 30 funerals.
0:20:43 > 0:20:46'My dad was very ambitious.'
0:20:46 > 0:20:49He found himself working at the Post Office,
0:20:49 > 0:20:50and he was working seven days a week,
0:20:50 > 0:20:52you know, to make ends meet.
0:20:52 > 0:20:55When you're new in the country, you take whatever job you can,
0:20:55 > 0:20:58whether you're a cleaner, whether you're a domestic hand,
0:20:58 > 0:21:00whether you work in hospitals.
0:21:00 > 0:21:03They brought their money together, a joint collection,
0:21:03 > 0:21:07to purchase a property, the house of God, a place to worship,
0:21:07 > 0:21:09and that's what they did.
0:21:10 > 0:21:12Mum, like my dad...
0:21:12 > 0:21:14Very smart people, weren't they?
0:21:14 > 0:21:16- Yeah.- Very stylish.
0:21:16 > 0:21:19My mum, of course, had the hat on.
0:21:19 > 0:21:21Beautiful dress.
0:21:21 > 0:21:22She would wear lovely shoes,
0:21:22 > 0:21:26and in the early days, my mum would even wear gloves.
0:21:26 > 0:21:29Back in those days, we didn't have, erm...
0:21:29 > 0:21:30our own transportation.
0:21:30 > 0:21:33- No.- So you can just imagine, there are seven of us in our family,
0:21:33 > 0:21:37so, seven children getting onto a bus,
0:21:37 > 0:21:39all dressed up smartly to go to church.
0:21:41 > 0:21:44There's a lot of love in the church, in helping each other out...
0:21:45 > 0:21:48..supporting each other with housing, child care,
0:21:48 > 0:21:51if you wanted to get on, get a job.
0:21:51 > 0:21:55Anything to help their life through.
0:21:55 > 0:21:57It was a community.

0:22:29 > 0:22:32Hello, my cheeky one!
0:22:33 > 0:22:35Hello, darling!
0:22:36 > 0:22:38Shaniqua grew up in Brixton.
0:22:38 > 0:22:41Good morning, Baba!
0:22:41 > 0:22:45She's now 25, and works locally as a hairdresser.
0:22:45 > 0:22:46Come here, darling.
0:22:46 > 0:22:49She's preparing to have her baby, Isaiah, christened,
0:22:49 > 0:22:53or as the Pentecostalists say, dedicated, at the church.
0:22:53 > 0:22:57He is getting something made, which is really, like, personal to him.
0:22:57 > 0:22:59And, er...
0:22:59 > 0:23:02just the fact that he's going to get blessed...
0:23:02 > 0:23:04- ISAIAH GURGLES - Yeah!
0:23:04 > 0:23:08And he's just, like, he doesn't have no clue, but it's just so sweet,
0:23:08 > 0:23:09and I love it.
0:23:09 > 0:23:11- SHE GASPS - Teddy, Teddy!
0:23:11 > 0:23:13SHE CHUCKLES
0:23:13 > 0:23:16- INTERVIEWER:- So they call it a dedication, is that right?- Mm-hmm.
0:23:16 > 0:23:20- Do you know why?- Basically, you're dedicating your baby to the Lord.
0:23:20 > 0:23:22Erm...you're handing him over.
0:23:22 > 0:23:25- So, stand him up.- Yeah.
0:23:25 > 0:23:28'It's just giving him a chance of life, I think.
0:23:29 > 0:23:32'Being protected under God.'
0:23:32 > 0:23:33Up you get!
0:23:33 > 0:23:35- SHE CHUCKLES - Look at me!
0:23:35 > 0:23:37You look so cute!
0:23:37 > 0:23:40'To find out I was pregnant, it was a big shock.
0:23:40 > 0:23:42'It's very difficult, er...
0:23:42 > 0:23:45'you know, when the dad is supposed to be there.
0:23:45 > 0:23:48'The situation of that is very - and always will be -
0:23:48 > 0:23:49'heart-breaking for me.'
0:23:49 > 0:23:52Now we're going to make some alterations! Yes!
0:23:52 > 0:23:56But the thought of getting rid of another human just, like,
0:23:56 > 0:24:00broke my soul, and I feel like I would have been worse off.
0:24:00 > 0:24:01He's come out so happy,
0:24:01 > 0:24:04so I couldn't have dreamt of a better decision.
0:24:04 > 0:24:07And he's really changed me in so many better ways.
0:24:08 > 0:24:11Is the church accepting, you know...
0:24:11 > 0:24:13you being a single mum, and everything?
0:24:13 > 0:24:15Do you feel like they accept?
0:24:15 > 0:24:20Well, I addressed that straightaway to the, you know, Pastor's wife,
0:24:20 > 0:24:24erm...and she was, you know, very encouraging about it,
0:24:24 > 0:24:26and they didn't make me feel like I don't fit in,
0:24:26 > 0:24:29or I should not be there.
0:24:29 > 0:24:32And you talked about how it protects him.
0:24:32 > 0:24:34Can you explain that a bit?
0:24:34 > 0:24:38Anything that may happen, you know, he'll be protected.
0:24:38 > 0:24:40When there's maybe a situation that's happened,
0:24:40 > 0:24:44or he's gone through something major in his life,
0:24:44 > 0:24:46and he needs to turn to someone, but, you know,
0:24:46 > 0:24:48there's no human there, he can turn to God.
0:24:48 > 0:24:51Cos God already protected him when he was a baby.
0:24:51 > 0:24:56So, I feel like, you know, it's saving him from a lot of disaster.
0:24:56 > 0:24:58ISAIAH GURGLES
0:24:58 > 0:25:01Isaiah's dedication is the first stage
0:25:01 > 0:25:04in the process of joining the church.
0:25:05 > 0:25:07In a suburb outside Brixton,
0:25:07 > 0:25:10Hannah is getting ready for the next stage -
0:25:10 > 0:25:12her baptism -
0:25:12 > 0:25:13a more profound ritual,
0:25:13 > 0:25:16that can only be undertaken by someone old enough
0:25:16 > 0:25:18to decide for themselves.
0:25:18 > 0:25:20So, just the normal black leggings.
0:25:20 > 0:25:23- You can't wear black! - No! Yes, I can!
0:25:23 > 0:25:27They said, really and truly, come in anything you don't mind getting wet.
0:25:27 > 0:25:29Well, try it on, and we'll tell you what it looks like, innit?
0:25:29 > 0:25:33Yeah, Hannah's the last one to be baptised out all of us.
0:25:33 > 0:25:35As much as it was all of our decision,
0:25:35 > 0:25:37she took the time to really think about what she wanted to do,
0:25:37 > 0:25:39and why she wanted to do it.
0:25:39 > 0:25:40It wasn't just on a whim,
0:25:40 > 0:25:42it wasn't just because the rest of us have done it.
0:25:42 > 0:25:44It was because she's made that decision
0:25:44 > 0:25:46that she really wants to do it, and she's ready now.
0:25:46 > 0:25:48Kind of recently, I remember, like, erm...
0:25:49 > 0:25:51..being actually able to say it.
0:25:51 > 0:25:53Like, saying, "I want to get baptised."
0:25:53 > 0:25:55I remember when I said it, and I was like,
0:25:55 > 0:25:57"Oh, my days, I just said it out of my mouth!"
0:25:57 > 0:26:00So, what was, like, your turning point, is my question?
0:26:00 > 0:26:02I don't actually really know. It just kind of happened for me.
0:26:02 > 0:26:07Like, one minute I was really almost scared, and the next, I was, like...
0:26:07 > 0:26:10I was fine, and I just decided, "OK, yeah."
0:26:10 > 0:26:11- Just at peace.- Yeah.
0:26:11 > 0:26:13Yeah, that's a better word.
0:26:13 > 0:26:16- INTERVIEWER: Do you remember your baptism?- Oh, yes!
0:26:16 > 0:26:18Oh, gosh!
0:26:18 > 0:26:21What do you mean, "Oh, gosh?" It was 30 years ago.
0:26:21 > 0:26:22Oh, for the love of chips!
0:26:22 > 0:26:23HANNAH CHUCKLES
0:26:23 > 0:26:24Yeah, it was really lovely.
0:26:24 > 0:26:27There was about 25 of us...
0:26:27 > 0:26:29and it was candlelight.
0:26:29 > 0:26:30- Soft.- Yeah, and the church...
0:26:30 > 0:26:33It was just all candles, and we all had to hold a candle,
0:26:33 > 0:26:38and march right down to the centre of the church, all the way around,
0:26:38 > 0:26:39and come back again,
0:26:39 > 0:26:42and then we just said our testimony individually.
0:26:42 > 0:26:44Lots of singing and praising, and...
0:26:44 > 0:26:46it was awesome.
0:26:46 > 0:26:48Do you feel like you're going to be restricted
0:26:48 > 0:26:50as a Christian, though, Han? Do you think that...
0:26:50 > 0:26:53Oh, no! No.
0:26:53 > 0:26:57I've chosen to follow, erm...
0:26:57 > 0:27:01Jesus' commands, although it's going to be trying. I'm just saying.
0:27:01 > 0:27:02Cos, I mean, I'm human,
0:27:02 > 0:27:07so I know that, like, sometimes, things may happen, and stuff.
0:27:07 > 0:27:08- But...- You make mistakes.- Yeah.
0:27:08 > 0:27:10So I may make mistakes,
0:27:10 > 0:27:13but I'm human, and this world is very tempting.
0:27:13 > 0:27:17Especially at my age, with all the things going on like parties, and...
0:27:17 > 0:27:19I think a lot of times when people decide they want to get baptised,
0:27:19 > 0:27:20then it's like,
0:27:20 > 0:27:23"Oh, but if I get baptised, I have to be this perfect Christian."
0:27:23 > 0:27:26We all sin, and even after being baptised, we're still going to sin.
0:27:26 > 0:27:29- Mmm.- We're still going to make mistakes.
0:27:29 > 0:27:32# The Lord is my light and salvation
0:27:32 > 0:27:34# Whom shall I fear?
0:27:34 > 0:27:38# Of whom shall I be afraid
0:27:38 > 0:27:41# The Lord is my light and salvation... #
0:27:41 > 0:27:44We've spoken to Hannah about drugs, we've spoken to her about sex,
0:27:44 > 0:27:46all of them, you know, all of them.
0:27:48 > 0:27:50You know, Hannah's going to meet guys out there,
0:27:50 > 0:27:52but it's about making the right choices,
0:27:52 > 0:27:55and the church should be a safe haven.
0:27:55 > 0:28:01# I will wait on you... #
0:28:01 > 0:28:03My experience with God and Ken's experience with God
0:28:03 > 0:28:06is going to be different from Hannah's experience with God.
0:28:06 > 0:28:09So she'll be out there, or at work, and stuff like that,
0:28:09 > 0:28:11and somebody will annoy her, and she'll say,
0:28:11 > 0:28:14"You know, Mum, that so-and-so, he was saying this, and saying that,"
0:28:14 > 0:28:16but I just said, "Oh, Lord, what shall I do?"
0:28:16 > 0:28:19"Get him out of my face!" You know, she finds that God for herself.
0:28:19 > 0:28:21And that's all we ask.
0:28:28 > 0:28:32Like Hannah, Jordan's also next in his family to get baptised...
0:28:33 > 0:28:36..following in the footsteps of his brother, Reiss.
0:28:38 > 0:28:42Their teens was a dreaded moment for me.
0:28:42 > 0:28:45How was I going to keep them in church?
0:28:45 > 0:28:47As a single parent, it was difficult.
0:28:47 > 0:28:48Erm...
0:28:48 > 0:28:55I didn't think that my children, my two boys, would have been baptised.
0:28:55 > 0:28:58It's one of the best feelings a parent could have.
0:29:00 > 0:29:06'I was originally not very strong in my faith.'
0:29:06 > 0:29:10And as the years went on, I found these...
0:29:10 > 0:29:15You know, my brothers at church, and...
0:29:15 > 0:29:16they were...
0:29:16 > 0:29:19They really influenced me.
0:29:19 > 0:29:24They really changed my life from where I was to where I am now.
0:29:24 > 0:29:27- INTERVIEWER:- Would your teenage years have been different
0:29:27 > 0:29:30- if you hadn't gone to church? - Oh, yeah.
0:29:30 > 0:29:32Most definitely.
0:29:32 > 0:29:35I know I would be a sinner right now, and I know that...
0:29:36 > 0:29:39..the life that I would be living,
0:29:39 > 0:29:43if my mum didn't bring me up in church, would be quite shameful.
0:29:46 > 0:29:49What changes when you get baptised?
0:29:49 > 0:29:51Erm... There was times I even...

0:46:33 > 0:46:38you can go back and discover the word that overrides,
0:46:38 > 0:46:42and that is at the core of it, is the word rejection.
0:46:42 > 0:46:46Some of them were rejected in the school system.
0:46:46 > 0:46:50Marked down and expelled. Rejection.
0:46:50 > 0:46:56And I have to confess and admit that sometimes, even in the church,
0:46:56 > 0:46:59people are living with rejection.
0:46:59 > 0:47:04The church is not absent. We have a way of just rejecting people,
0:47:04 > 0:47:07because they don't look like us,
0:47:07 > 0:47:10because they don't talk like us, because they don't behave like us.
0:47:10 > 0:47:17They don't conduct themselves like us. We have a way of rejecting them.
0:47:17 > 0:47:18Give me your handbag.
0:47:23 > 0:47:25Because you know sometimes...
0:47:27 > 0:47:29..we are in church...
0:47:31 > 0:47:35..and we're sitting down...
0:47:37 > 0:47:43..so our handbag is beside us. But there comes a prostitute.
0:47:45 > 0:47:47And as soon as they come...
0:47:50 > 0:47:52..to sit beside you...
0:47:52 > 0:47:55LAUGHTER
0:47:59 > 0:48:02You know, you just grab a hold of your bag.
0:48:04 > 0:48:08You're sending out a message...
0:48:08 > 0:48:11that they don't belong here.
0:48:11 > 0:48:15And at least, you don't belong and qualify to sit on the seat
0:48:15 > 0:48:17where I sit.
0:48:17 > 0:48:20And in that very action,
0:48:20 > 0:48:22we are demonstrating...
0:48:23 > 0:48:25..rejection.
0:48:25 > 0:48:29Let me say to you, when you feel rejected, and you feel
0:48:29 > 0:48:33that you can't do it, God will send for you.
0:48:34 > 0:48:36Hallelujah!
0:48:37 > 0:48:41Your rejection
0:48:41 > 0:48:45and your disadvantage
0:48:45 > 0:48:49have a way of bringing out the best in you.
0:48:57 > 0:49:00Never allow your memories...
0:49:03 > 0:49:08..to destroy your dreams.
0:49:08 > 0:49:11The pain. The hurt.
0:49:11 > 0:49:13The abuse. The rejection.
0:49:14 > 0:49:19Don't let them destroy your dreams.
0:49:30 > 0:49:33'When did you write these?'
0:49:33 > 0:49:37Just about two and a half weeks ago, three weeks.
0:49:39 > 0:49:43And my personal goals is to do with myself,
0:49:43 > 0:49:48which means I set discipline for myself, respect myself.
0:49:48 > 0:49:51Love myself, put myself first.
0:49:51 > 0:49:53Stop putting myself down.
0:49:55 > 0:49:57And, also,
0:49:57 > 0:49:59between now and the future, you know,
0:49:59 > 0:50:02I really would like to meet someone who, you know,
0:50:02 > 0:50:05loves me for me and would love Isaiah.
0:50:05 > 0:50:07And love God as well.
0:50:07 > 0:50:09And will treat me how I deserve to be treated.
0:50:15 > 0:50:17You've got to have dreams, at the end of the day,
0:50:17 > 0:50:20no-one should tell you that you shouldn't.
0:50:22 > 0:50:25It's the day of Shaniqua's dedication ceremony
0:50:25 > 0:50:27for her baby boy, Isaiah.
0:50:28 > 0:50:32Hey. Hey, handsome.
0:50:33 > 0:50:34Hey.
0:50:57 > 0:51:03One of the most precious gifts we have a normal life is our family.
0:51:04 > 0:51:09And your family might not be all that you want it to be.
0:51:10 > 0:51:14Maybe it is made up of different bits and pieces.
0:51:15 > 0:51:18But nevertheless, it is your family.
0:51:19 > 0:51:20Invest in them love.
0:51:22 > 0:51:27And instil in them that they can be whatever they want to be in life.
0:51:29 > 0:51:33Will you pray for your children's future, so they will develop in an
0:51:33 > 0:51:36environment of prayer and support.
0:51:36 > 0:51:39- If you do, say we will.- We will.
0:51:40 > 0:51:44'If I can be that support for him being young,
0:51:44 > 0:51:48'and be there consistently without it being, you know, here one minute,
0:51:48 > 0:51:52'gone the next minute, here one minute, gone the next minute...
0:51:53 > 0:51:56'..I would rather be there consistently through his life,
0:51:56 > 0:51:58'so he knows that I'm there.
0:51:58 > 0:52:02'And he knows that he trusts me, that I'm his mum.
0:52:02 > 0:52:04'That's how a family home should be.'
0:52:04 > 0:52:08This is Isaiah Jonah Campbell,
0:52:08 > 0:52:11and we lift him up in the presence of the Lord.
0:52:13 > 0:52:17And pronounce him duly dedicated in the name of the Father,
0:52:17 > 0:52:20and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
0:52:44 > 0:52:48Tonight is one of the biggest events of the year for the church.
0:52:50 > 0:52:51It's the evening of baptism
0:52:51 > 0:52:55that Hannah and Jordan have been preparing for for weeks.
0:52:55 > 0:52:59Anyone can read the Bible, come to church every Sunday,
0:52:59 > 0:53:02read the Bible every day, pray every day,
0:53:02 > 0:53:06but if there is no repentance, there is no salvation.
0:53:08 > 0:53:12You must repent of your sins.
0:53:13 > 0:53:16I always say this - if you haven't repented,
0:53:16 > 0:53:19that water does nothing whatsoever.
0:53:21 > 0:53:23Cos that water
0:53:23 > 0:53:28is the same water that is going into every household on this road.
0:53:28 > 0:53:31There is no salvation in that water,
0:53:31 > 0:53:33it is just Thames water.
0:53:34 > 0:53:37So you can go in that pool...
0:53:37 > 0:53:39without repenting,
0:53:39 > 0:53:44and what happens is you go in as a dry sinner,
0:53:44 > 0:53:46and you come out as a wet one.
0:53:48 > 0:53:52After you emerge, when you get up, they'll wipe your face.
0:53:52 > 0:53:54I got loads of cream on.
0:53:54 > 0:53:55That's what we're going to do.
0:53:57 > 0:54:01We're going to wrap it like this as we take you out.
0:54:01 > 0:54:03- So you're not exposed the back, yeah?- Yeah.
0:54:03 > 0:54:06'It's like I'm going through a door I'm never going to go back out of.'
0:54:06 > 0:54:09I know that this is a really big step,
0:54:09 > 0:54:13and I'm just really happy to be taking it now that I'm ready
0:54:13 > 0:54:18and I'm not anxious or, like, "Am I doing the right thing?"
0:54:18 > 0:54:19Everything just feels right.
0:54:19 > 0:54:21Like, everything just feels in place, how it should be.
0:54:23 > 0:54:27"I want to further my relationship with Christ.
0:54:27 > 0:54:32- "Also, I want to be a disciple of Christ..."- Ah!
0:54:32 > 0:54:34THEY LAUGH
0:54:34 > 0:54:35Good.
0:54:36 > 0:54:37"And this next step..."
0:54:41 > 0:54:42Ooh, I need to...
0:54:42 > 0:54:45- Just say it.- Does anyone have a pen?
0:54:45 > 0:54:49Everyone getting baptised today has to make a public declaration or
0:54:49 > 0:54:52testimony to explain why they've made this choice.
0:54:52 > 0:54:58It's for that. "Finally, I want to get baptised for my 16th birthday,
0:54:58 > 0:55:02"as I turned 16 last month, I'm getting baptised today."
0:55:02 > 0:55:04That's it.
0:55:04 > 0:55:08It's one thing to get saved in secret, but some point,
0:55:08 > 0:55:11you've got to go public with your faith.
0:55:11 > 0:55:14And Hannah, our dear Hannah, has been here for a long,
0:55:14 > 0:55:17long time and wants to be baptised.
0:55:17 > 0:55:20But tonight she made the decision, "I'm going to be baptised."
0:55:20 > 0:55:23You have to go public with your faith.
0:55:23 > 0:55:26It gives you, kind of, butterflies.
0:55:26 > 0:55:32Make you feel a bit, oh, elated, that kind of thing,
0:55:32 > 0:55:36to see the last child get baptised.
0:55:39 > 0:55:41In Hannah's baptism,
0:55:41 > 0:55:46she actually asked for me to be in the pool with her.
0:55:57 > 0:56:00That's quite touching.
0:56:00 > 0:56:04That's quite touching, and something like that I'll remember.
0:56:05 > 0:56:08I'll remember for the rest of my life, I think.
0:56:10 > 0:56:14And tonight, it gives me great pleasure to be able take part
0:56:14 > 0:56:18- in her baptism in this... - APPLAUSE
0:56:18 > 0:56:21It's a great pleasure tonight for us to join in baptising you.
0:56:21 > 0:56:25In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
0:56:25 > 0:56:26Amen.
0:56:38 > 0:56:40I did it!
0:56:47 > 0:56:50"I've chosen to get baptised today
0:56:50 > 0:56:53"because I want to further my relationship with Christ.
0:56:53 > 0:56:58"I also want to be a disciple of Christ
0:56:58 > 0:57:02"and I know that this next step is for life.
0:57:02 > 0:57:06"As I turned 16 last month, I'm going to get baptised today
0:57:06 > 0:57:09"as I have come to more of an understanding
0:57:09 > 0:57:11"of the meaning of baptism."
0:57:11 > 0:57:15CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:57:31 > 0:57:35This is our brother, Jordan.
0:57:35 > 0:57:38You all know him.
0:57:38 > 0:57:41Ever since I came here, my heart has been linked with his.
0:57:41 > 0:57:46And I'm so pleased that he's made this decision follow the Lord
0:57:46 > 0:57:49in obedience and to be baptised today.
0:57:49 > 0:57:52And we know that God has a bright future for him.
0:57:52 > 0:57:55This is a part of his destiny.
0:57:55 > 0:57:58And it's a pleasure tonight to baptise him.
0:57:58 > 0:58:02We now baptise you in the name of the Father,
0:58:02 > 0:58:05and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
0:58:39 > 0:58:44EXCITED CHATTER
0:58:44 > 0:58:46I'm so happy.
