0:00:13 > 0:00:15Chaplains are modern-day disciples.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19- Ta-da!- Yay!

0:00:20 > 0:00:25- Would you like a bacon sandwich? - Are you Jewish?- No. - Have you got any Jewish pals?

0:00:25 > 0:00:31They take the word of God out of the church and into the places we work and play.

0:00:31 > 0:00:36This is what Christ did. He came and walked and talked and lived amongst people.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39This is really what a chaplain does.

0:00:39 > 0:00:46They're employed in our hospitals and universities, at the football ground, on the street.

0:00:46 > 0:00:51- We're here to help everyone who's vulnerable, right? - We are very vulnerable(!)

0:00:51 > 0:00:55SIREN WAILS All chaplaincy is front-line ministry.

0:00:55 > 0:00:59It means you're actually out where it's happening.

0:00:59 > 0:01:03It's a kind of "sleeves rolled up and get your hands messy" spirituality.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06Bringing people together and trying to do good.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09They come to us with a listening ear,

0:01:09 > 0:01:13spiritual guidance and a helping hand when life gets tough.

0:01:18 > 0:01:24This is where we should be. These people will not be in church on a Sunday morning. They'll be in bed.

0:01:27 > 0:01:31When the wheels fall off, that's when people pray.

0:01:31 > 0:01:35People don't expect children to die. They expect them to get better.

0:01:36 > 0:01:41It's about real life and sometimes real death situations.

0:01:41 > 0:01:46The streets of Liverpool will feel the Lord's presence. Don't worry about that.

0:01:46 > 0:01:51We're following chaplains in the city of Liverpool, the work they do

0:01:51 > 0:01:55and the people's lives they touch.

0:02:07 > 0:02:12Every weekend, over a quarter of a million people go into Liverpool

0:02:12 > 0:02:16for a night out in the city's clubs and bars.

0:02:20 > 0:02:25Keeping the streets safe is a major challenge for the police,

0:02:25 > 0:02:29but soon a new religious force will be there to back them up.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33Make no mistake.

0:02:33 > 0:02:40Street Pastors is all about lifting up Jesus, lifting up the name of Jesus on the streets.

0:02:40 > 0:02:47A group of Christians from churches all over the city have volunteered to become Street Pastors.

0:02:47 > 0:02:52In a week, they'll venture out into clubland, offering help to anyone that needs it.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55With Jesus, faith and deeds...

0:02:55 > 0:02:58Chaplain Keith Hitchman is part of the team in charge.

0:02:58 > 0:03:03For girls perhaps who have had too much to drink and are in high heels,

0:03:03 > 0:03:06we'll be giving them flip-flops to wear,

0:03:06 > 0:03:11handing out bottles of water, chatting to people, talking to people.

0:03:17 > 0:03:24Tonight, police inspector Greg Lambert is taking a group of trainee pastors around the area

0:03:24 > 0:03:26they'll be patrolling.

0:03:26 > 0:03:31Ladies and gents, thank you for coming out. Much appreciated of you giving up your time.

0:03:31 > 0:03:37I'm guessing that the majority of you don't go into Concert Square at half past 12, one in the morning.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39The police are backing the project

0:03:39 > 0:03:44because schemes like this in other cities have helped stop street crime.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47Follow me, ladies and gents.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49# Ready, steady, go... #

0:03:54 > 0:03:59I'm probably the most improbable person imaginable to be involved.

0:03:59 > 0:04:05I'm 72. It's a completely different life scene from anything that I've ever experienced,

0:04:05 > 0:04:07so I'm excited.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11I'm a little bit apprehensive about it,

0:04:11 > 0:04:18a little bit scared, but I'm also quite excited because it's the start of Street Pastor training in a way.

0:04:18 > 0:04:20Welcome to Mathew Street.

0:04:20 > 0:04:26As you can see, although it's not particularly busy, it is incredibly noisy.

0:04:26 > 0:04:31If you come in here on a busy night, you are literally like sardines.

0:04:31 > 0:04:35I have heard it described as like Faliraki without the sun.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39It goes on right the way up the street.

0:04:39 > 0:04:43That's where the world-famous Cavern Club is.

0:04:43 > 0:04:47# Ready, steady, go... #

0:04:49 > 0:04:55I always find it very difficult to speak "drunk". It's a separate language.

0:04:55 > 0:05:01But most of them respond perfectly well to a bit of patience and a bit of humour.

0:05:03 > 0:05:07If your son or daughter or family member needed help,

0:05:07 > 0:05:13I think you wouldn't be that bothered where that help came from as long as that person got help.

0:05:13 > 0:05:18It doesn't necessarily, as I say, have to come from the police.

0:05:18 > 0:05:24The Street Pastors with their listening skills, their life skills and their ability to talk to people,

0:05:24 > 0:05:27they can provide an extremely valuable service.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30We'll walk into the square. Be careful crossing the road.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37# Ready, steady, go... #

0:05:42 > 0:05:45Somebody else is on a mission too.

0:05:45 > 0:05:53Rabbi Shmuli Brown is doing his bit to reach another section of the city's population - students,

0:05:53 > 0:05:58in particular, Jewish students starting at Liverpool University in a few weeks' time

0:05:58 > 0:06:01at the beginning of the academic year.

0:06:01 > 0:06:07I contact every single student prior to his or her arrival on campus

0:06:07 > 0:06:10and I also try and contact the parents.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13I contact them and I tell them what we have to offer

0:06:13 > 0:06:17and we are seriously an open home for them 24/7,

0:06:17 > 0:06:22whenever they need anything, if it's a shoulder to lean on, if it's an ear to listen to,

0:06:22 > 0:06:25if it's just a family to be united with.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28The rabbi is part of Chabad,

0:06:28 > 0:06:32an organisation providing a home from home for Jewish students,

0:06:32 > 0:06:35but there's a lot more to it than this.

0:06:35 > 0:06:40"Dear Shmuli and Tzivia, thank you so much for your Facebook message..."

0:06:40 > 0:06:43Parents are getting in touch as well.

0:06:44 > 0:06:52I must admit that I was worried about this particular student, her daughter...coming to university.

0:06:52 > 0:06:56"She's been brought up in a very traditional, kosher environment,

0:06:56 > 0:07:01"having had a Jewish education at nursery, primary and secondary school since the age of two.

0:07:01 > 0:07:07"She rebelled against us somewhat and chose Liverpool, as opposed to Nottingham, Birmingham, Leeds..."

0:07:07 > 0:07:11The main concern of any parent

0:07:11 > 0:07:16is that their child should marry a non-Jewish person

0:07:16 > 0:07:21because that means you're killing off the religion for generation after generation.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24Once you marry a non-Jewish person...

0:07:25 > 0:07:30If a male marries a non-Jewish female, all the kids will be non-Jews.

0:07:31 > 0:07:36How do the students feel about you contacting the parents?

0:07:36 > 0:07:42To be quite honest, certain students do not actually like it, but that's the price we have to pay.

0:07:49 > 0:07:55This weekend in Liverpool city centre, the Street Pastors will begin their clubland mission.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00At St Stephen's Church in Gateacre,

0:08:00 > 0:08:06wardens Carol Burke and Hazel Dickens are looking forward to their first night out.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09Are you nervous about the Street Pastors?

0:08:09 > 0:08:12I couldn't believe it was so soon.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15Do you think God will be out there with you on the streets?

0:08:15 > 0:08:19- Yeah.- Every second we're out there.- Yeah.

0:08:19 > 0:08:26Every step we take, every person we speak to, it will be God's words we're speaking in Scouse.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30- Yeah.- In the Scouse language, won't it?- Yeah, definitely.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32Definitely, um...

0:08:32 > 0:08:35On our own, we couldn't do it.

0:08:35 > 0:08:39I reckon on our own... You've got to remember, I'm 56. How old are you?

0:08:39 > 0:08:42- Oh, I'm 63. - So we're not young women.

0:08:42 > 0:08:47- We're going to go out with people who are very drunk...- Yeah.

0:08:47 > 0:08:53..possibly got badness on their minds anyway with the drink, and yet we have no fear.

0:08:53 > 0:08:57- No.- Without the Lord, we would be terrified, wouldn't we?

0:08:57 > 0:08:59- Anyone would be our age.- Yeah.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02Why on earth are you doing it?

0:09:02 > 0:09:05Because I want to give something back.

0:09:05 > 0:09:11- Many years ago, I had a bit of a problem with alcohol and drugs. You know the true story.- Yeah.

0:09:11 > 0:09:15- I wasn't a very good person, was I, Hazel?- I didn't know you then.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18- You've heard what I've told you. - I'm not judging.

0:09:18 > 0:09:25Right, I wasn't. I was one of the naughty people and I have been in the gutter in Liverpool many a time.

0:09:25 > 0:09:27And if I can help one person,

0:09:27 > 0:09:33then I feel all the training, going out of a night and everything, will be worth it.

0:09:33 > 0:09:38That's why I'm doing it. I just want to give something back that Jesus has given me.

0:09:38 > 0:09:43Do you remember I used to call all Christians "anoraks"? I did, didn't I?

0:09:43 > 0:09:45Then I went out and bought an anorak!

0:09:45 > 0:09:49- LAUGHTER - You joined the club. - I joined the Anorak Club!

0:09:55 > 0:10:00Rabbi Shmuli Brown is at Liverpool University Freshers' Fair,

0:10:00 > 0:10:02searching for new Jewish students.

0:10:02 > 0:10:08- Excuse me. Are you Jewish?- No. - Do you have any Jewish pals here? - No.- No-one? Enjoy Freshers'!

0:10:08 > 0:10:13There are 200 Jewish students expected on campus this year

0:10:13 > 0:10:17and when Rabbi Brown is around, there's nowhere to hide.

0:10:17 > 0:10:24- Excuse me. Are you Jewish?- No. - Do you have any Jewish pals here at uni?- No.- Enjoy Freshers'.

0:10:24 > 0:10:29We have to be very proactive in making sure that we find these Jewish students

0:10:29 > 0:10:33and bring them to us and show them exactly what we're all about.

0:10:33 > 0:10:35- Do you have any Jewish pals here? - No.

0:10:35 > 0:10:39'I don't think anyone is offended if I ask them if they're Jewish.'

0:10:39 > 0:10:41Anyone Jewish here? No?

0:10:41 > 0:10:47'People come over to me and ask me if I'm Greek. So am I offended? No.'

0:10:47 > 0:10:51At last, the rabbi gets the answer he's been looking for.

0:10:51 > 0:10:56- You're Jewish?- Yeah.- You're Jewish. What's your name?- Zach. - What are you studying?

0:10:56 > 0:11:00I'm not studying. My girlfriend is studying here.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04But Zach's non-Jewish girlfriend is cause for concern.

0:11:04 > 0:11:08I think you should come tonight for a free meal.

0:11:08 > 0:11:12We're going to have a barbecue with all the Jewish students...

0:11:12 > 0:11:17Yes, he has a non-Jewish girlfriend and I don't know any personal information about him,

0:11:17 > 0:11:19but he seems a very nice guy.

0:11:19 > 0:11:22But is that what you think is happening on campus?

0:11:22 > 0:11:25It definitely is happening on campus.

0:11:25 > 0:11:31The university years are when you befriend tons of people and that is why we are here also -

0:11:31 > 0:11:36to try and stop that, to make sure that all Jewish people stay within the faith.

0:11:36 > 0:11:42But we do not reject anyone who goes away from the beaten path. We accept every one of them.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44- Julia.- Julia? There's one for you.

0:11:44 > 0:11:51We're very much into match-making and, hopefully, many successful marriages come through our home.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56Tonight, for the first time,

0:11:56 > 0:12:01a new type of chaplaincy will be tested out on the streets of Liverpool.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12to mark the start of their mission in the city.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15Carol, you are a medium...

0:12:16 > 0:12:22Before prayers begin, Carol and Hazel get to try out their new uniform.

0:12:25 > 0:12:29- What do you reckon?- I reckon it's a good fit. It's a perfect fit.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34This is my protective armour.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37This is God's armour I'm wearing now.

0:12:38 > 0:12:40And I'm protected now.

0:12:40 > 0:12:42SHE CHUCKLES

0:12:42 > 0:12:44I'm too excited!

0:12:44 > 0:12:47Just looking forward to getting out on the street.

0:12:47 > 0:12:49I feel sorry for the public.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51I pray for the public.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23we ask for your blessing upon us.

0:13:25 > 0:13:27We ask for your protection.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31CHEERING

0:13:36 > 0:13:40# Be thou my best thought

0:13:40 > 0:13:45# In the day and the night

0:13:45 > 0:13:52# Waking and sleeping, thy presence... #

0:13:52 > 0:13:56Les Isaac, the founder of Britain's Street Pastor Movement,

0:13:56 > 0:14:01will deliver a sermon to the new recruits before the night's work begins.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04There is more than one way of preaching the Gospel.

0:14:04 > 0:14:08Yes, there's the proclamation, but there's also the good works

0:14:08 > 0:14:12of loving and caring for our neighbour, the complete stranger.

0:14:12 > 0:14:18It is not about us preaching. We are there to listen to people.

0:14:18 > 0:14:21Listen and they will talk to you and they'll want to talk.

0:14:21 > 0:14:26If I speak to one person all night, that's my task accomplished.

0:14:37 > 0:14:39At the University Freshers' Fair,

0:14:39 > 0:14:44Rabbi Brown's meticulous research on social networking sites is paying off.

0:14:57 > 0:15:00# Girl, I don't know, I don't know why... #

0:15:02 > 0:15:05Of course we know your name. We met each other on Facebook.

0:15:05 > 0:15:09He's spoken to my mum more than he's spoken to me.

0:15:12 > 0:15:16Any question that they have, I message their mum and dad

0:15:16 > 0:15:20and say, "If you've got any problems at all, give me a buzz."

0:18:43 > 0:18:46Happy birthday!

0:18:46 > 0:18:48I used to be one of them, didn't I?

0:18:48 > 0:18:54Only five years ago, I would have been one of them getting drunk, so I know where they're at.

0:18:54 > 0:18:57They are just having fun, not meaning any of us any harm.

0:18:57 > 0:19:00THEY SING "Happy Birthday"

0:19:00 > 0:19:04# Happy birthday to you! #

0:19:10 > 0:19:14Rabbi Brown is back home preparing for his Freshers' Week barbecue.

0:19:14 > 0:19:20Well, of course, many of our events are connected with food and it is a pull.

0:19:20 > 0:19:25Of course it's a pull, especially as everything is home-cooked.

0:19:25 > 0:19:27We serve them only kosher stuff.

0:19:27 > 0:19:33That's one of our missions over here - to teach them the traditions of eating only kosher.

0:19:33 > 0:19:37- Hello...- Students are arriving for an evening of fun and kosher food.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40Are these all the freshers? Hello, everyone!

0:19:40 > 0:19:44- Freshers, how are you? I'm Rabbi Shmuli. What's your name?- I'm Al.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47But this is more than just a social event.

0:19:47 > 0:19:52It's part of an ongoing mission to keep Jewish students true to their faith.

0:19:52 > 0:19:58I've been speaking to many parents prior to their children leaving their homes, coming to university.

0:19:58 > 0:20:03They are extremely worried, that's why I'm in touch with them,

0:20:03 > 0:20:07about their children basically drifting off the Judaic path,

0:20:07 > 0:20:11befriending a non-Jewish girlfriend or a non-Jewish boyfriend,

0:20:11 > 0:20:14ending up marrying her or him,

0:20:14 > 0:20:19then building up a whole life, forgetting the past, forgetting the tradition.

0:20:19 > 0:20:24They're very worried about that. We are here to make sure we can enhance the Jewish identity

0:20:24 > 0:20:29and complement the Jewish identity whilst on campus.

0:20:29 > 0:20:32It's not an easy task, but we're here for that.

0:20:32 > 0:20:34SINGING IN HEBREW

0:20:44 > 0:20:46OK, everyone can enjoy the cake.

0:20:47 > 0:20:50He spoke to me on Facebook a couple of times.

0:20:50 > 0:20:55He's a really nice guy. It's nice to know someone is looking out for you.

0:20:55 > 0:20:59Many, many students ask me about the fundamentals, about the basics,

0:20:59 > 0:21:06about the Aleph to Tav of Judaism, the ABC of Judaism, the base, the core.

0:21:06 > 0:21:11I hadn't even met him before today. I'd met him on Facebook. He contacted me.

0:21:11 > 0:21:16Even from that, you got a good vibe that he was friendly and welcoming.

0:21:18 > 0:21:21Gorgeous people, gorgeous people.

0:21:21 > 0:21:25We hope to see them every week over here. If not here, then on campus.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28- Straight ahead, straight ahead.- Yay!

0:21:32 > 0:21:36The Street Pastors are getting into the swing of things.

0:21:42 > 0:21:45We'll give you water, we'll help you get home, get you a taxi.

0:21:45 > 0:21:50- A free taxi? - No, we're not that generous, but we'll make sure you're safe.

0:21:50 > 0:21:53# I believe in miracles, baby

0:21:53 > 0:21:56# I believe... #

0:21:56 > 0:22:00Only minutes after arriving, a young woman needs the Pastors' help.

0:22:00 > 0:22:04This girl's really distressed. She's had far too much to drink.

0:22:04 > 0:22:07We've called her sister and she'll pick her up.

0:22:07 > 0:22:12This is exactly why we have this vehicle here. It's a great sanctuary.

0:22:12 > 0:22:17Within five minutes of us starting this project, we're already using it for that purpose.

0:22:17 > 0:22:22We're Street Pastors, right? We've just come to help people, show you the way.

0:22:22 > 0:22:29- If you get lost, if you get drunk and need help...- Do you volunteer for this?- We volunteer, yeah.

0:22:29 > 0:22:35I don't know what I'll be like in church tomorrow. I've got a harvest service in the morning!

0:22:35 > 0:22:39- Come on, sweetheart.- These shoes are not meant for walking.

0:22:39 > 0:22:45I feel like we're here for a reason and God sent us. I don't think it any more. I know it.

0:22:45 > 0:22:51- There were two girls lying on their back.- So they need us? - They were lying there like..."Agh!"

0:22:51 > 0:22:57- Would you feel good knowing we're here?- Yeah. If I was going to be sick, you're here to help.

0:22:57 > 0:22:59- You'd like that, yeah?- Yeah.

0:22:59 > 0:23:04The Pastors aren't here just to chat to people. They're here to pray for them as well.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07While one of us is speaking to somebody, engaging,

0:23:07 > 0:23:14another one of us will watch round them to make sure they're safe, but also send arrow prayers up to God.

0:23:14 > 0:23:20Arrow prayers are just quick prayers. "Lord, keep them safe, make them safe," that kind of thing.

0:23:20 > 0:23:25God, I thank you for this guy that we've met. He's really distressed, as you know.

0:23:25 > 0:23:29We just pray for his peace and we pray that you'll keep him safe.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32- Amen.- Amen.

0:23:32 > 0:23:37- We're here to help everyone who's vulnerable, right? - We are very vulnerable(!)

0:23:37 > 0:23:41This is Michelle and it's her 30th...her 21st birthday.

0:23:41 > 0:23:45- Your 21st? Happy birthday! - No, it's really her 30th.

0:23:45 > 0:23:47LAUGHTER

0:23:47 > 0:23:53This is where we should be. These people will not be in church on a Sunday morning. They'll be in bed.

0:23:53 > 0:23:55SHOUTING

0:23:56 > 0:23:57Yeah!

0:23:57 > 0:24:01Isn't this the best place to be, where we should be,

0:24:01 > 0:24:07with the people of our city, relating to them, showing them that Christians are not boring, dull and irrelevant?

0:24:07 > 0:24:11We do care about these people and I do love them.

0:24:11 > 0:24:17I'm loving it. I really am. I'm feeling God's presence on these streets and that's what's needed.

0:24:17 > 0:24:23A taxi has arrived for the young woman the Pastors found on the street. Soon she'll be home safe.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25It's their first success story.

0:24:25 > 0:24:31Her friend's sister has picked her up with her husband

0:24:31 > 0:24:35and they're all safe and home, hopefully, soon, tucked up in bed.

0:24:35 > 0:24:39- Job well done.- Yeah. That was OK, wasn't it?

0:24:40 > 0:24:44At the moment, everyone is jolly and happy and wants to talk to them.

0:24:44 > 0:24:50It may be later on when people have had a lot more to drink, they're not so willing to engage with them.

0:24:54 > 0:24:56- All right, Mum?- Hello!

0:24:56 > 0:25:03TUNELESSLY: # Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead... #

0:25:12 > 0:25:18- When we go into here, keep slightly apart, but keep an eye on...- On each other?- Yeah.

0:25:24 > 0:25:28I'll meet Jesus...in Kingdom.

0:25:29 > 0:25:31Is Jesus coming to Kingdom?

0:25:32 > 0:25:36- He'll be over there, won't he? - Kingdom, is that a pub?

0:26:00 > 0:26:05We've just found a young girl. It looks like she's twisted her ankle really badly.

0:26:05 > 0:26:09I've advised her to go to hospital, but she's getting this taxi home.

0:26:13 > 0:26:17- Let's go and get the next one. - Let's go and get the next one!

0:26:17 > 0:26:21- Bring it on!- We've got to really now look in the doorways.

0:26:21 > 0:26:25What about the man over there? Can't we help him?

0:26:25 > 0:26:31- He's homeless. We're not geared up for...- Unless I take him home with me, he's staying there, OK.

0:26:31 > 0:26:35I remember him saying if we help one person, then it's been worth it

0:26:35 > 0:26:39and I feel like tonight's been worth it for that one person.

0:26:39 > 0:26:42And that guy in the doorway was really grateful.

0:26:42 > 0:26:47One night and we've already got loads of stories and things.

0:26:48 > 0:26:52A successful first night, but only a taste of what is to come.
