0:02:51 > 0:02:54'It's what I value about this job more than anything,'

0:02:54 > 0:02:56I think, that we meet people who aren't churched,

0:02:56 > 0:02:59but have suddenly found themselves in a situation,

0:02:59 > 0:03:01which is a crisis, if their child is in here

0:03:01 > 0:03:03and suddenly feel that, maybe,

0:03:03 > 0:03:06there's more to the world than just what we see here, you know,

0:03:06 > 0:03:09so it's good to be in that situation with them.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14Are you going to sleep? Eh?

0:03:15 > 0:03:17Is that you're tired?

0:03:39 > 0:03:45And this is one of Carson's first nappies,

0:03:45 > 0:03:48which was too big and we had to fold over.

0:03:48 > 0:03:55He actually fit in my hand, that is how small he was. Scary times.

0:03:55 > 0:04:01He's had a bleed in the brain, which was quite a big bleed,

0:04:01 > 0:04:06he's also got brittle-bone disease, um, he's got a heart defect.

0:04:06 > 0:04:12He's got chronic lung disease, um...

0:04:12 > 0:04:16- he has eyesight problems, hearing problems... - MACHINE BEEPS

0:04:18 > 0:04:21He has spina bifida occulta

0:04:21 > 0:04:25and he has a tracheostomy fitted, because, during the night,

0:04:25 > 0:04:27he doesn't breathe at all for himself.

0:04:27 > 0:04:31He'll never be able to feed normally through his mouth, um...

0:04:31 > 0:04:35I think that's it. I think I've covered everything.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43Kirsty's been told many times that Carson won't make it

0:04:43 > 0:04:47and he's always proved the doctors wrong,

0:04:47 > 0:04:52but his future is still uncertain and he's going to need more surgery.

0:04:52 > 0:04:54Get off them wires.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00I think the kids have got special spirits

0:05:00 > 0:05:03and I think the way that the parents just alter their lives

0:05:03 > 0:05:05to cope with huge bits of news,

0:05:05 > 0:05:09that they've got long-term treatment, I think they're amazing.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12I never cease to be amazed the way parents cope.

0:05:19 > 0:05:24Every weekend, thousands of partygoers head for Liverpool's clubs and bars.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19We are part of the church out on the street.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22There's no good us sitting in church expecting people to come to us,

0:06:22 > 0:06:24- because they're not going to come.- No.

0:06:24 > 0:06:28So we go to them and that's what we're here for.

0:06:28 > 0:06:30CHEERING

0:06:30 > 0:06:33Come on, hard-core.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38We are off to Stanley Street

0:06:41 > 0:06:46- On the way back.- On the way back. I love Matthew Street and all.

0:06:46 > 0:06:48- You just go for a wander, sort of thing?- BOTH: Yes.

0:06:48 > 0:06:55See if we can find anybody who needs us. Homeless...vulnerable people.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58People who just want a chat.

0:06:58 > 0:07:04One of the best clubs in Liverpool there, man. Oh, what.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07I fell down them stairs that many times.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10- The oldest and friendliest club? - Love that club.

0:07:10 > 0:07:11Best club in Liverpool!

0:07:14 > 0:07:19Picking up empty bottles is a simple way of making the streets safer.

0:07:20 > 0:07:25- What did you pick the bottle up for? - Um, because it's a potential weapon.

0:07:26 > 0:07:31Or...they can smash it and cut their feet on it.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34I'll find a bin and put them in it when I find one.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40BOTTLES CLINK

0:07:40 > 0:07:42So we just walk around and, obviously,

0:07:42 > 0:07:45you see some of the same people each time you come out

0:07:45 > 0:07:50and they just get to know us and they're more trusting then, you know.

0:07:50 > 0:07:54They know that we're not "Bible bashers". We're here for them.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09At Alder Hey Hospital, when Kirsty Harris gets

0:08:09 > 0:08:12a rare moment away from her son Carson's bedside,

0:08:12 > 0:08:15she heads to the room that's become a home from home.

0:08:18 > 0:08:20Ronald McDonald House is

0:08:20 > 0:08:24a place where parents can stay while their children are having treatment

0:08:26 > 0:08:29- Thank you.- There you are, dear. - Thank you very much.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31'When you first come, it's very strange.'

0:08:31 > 0:08:35We've been here quite a long time now, so we...

0:08:35 > 0:08:39It is like a second home now. We know all the staff pretty well,

0:08:39 > 0:08:42we have a good relationship with the staff.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50We call it the house that never sleeps,

0:08:50 > 0:08:51because there's always somebody,

0:08:51 > 0:08:56no matter what time of day or night, coming and going and lots of noise.

0:08:58 > 0:09:02Kirsty's family have been separated by Carson's illness.

0:09:02 > 0:09:05While she lives at the hospital, her other children

0:09:05 > 0:09:09are back home with her partner and mother.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11This is my room.

0:09:13 > 0:09:21Yeah, so on the wall here we've got Layton, and Ethan, Lewis and Chloe.

0:09:21 > 0:09:26So...they're always with me.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29It just makes it a bit more homely.

0:09:29 > 0:09:36It's been very hard to deal with the guilt of, um...

0:09:36 > 0:09:40splitting yourself in two and you can't physically do that.

0:09:42 > 0:09:44Father, we just thank you for this time

0:09:44 > 0:09:47to come together and to take time out of a busy day,

0:09:47 > 0:09:52just to come rest in your presence, and to worship you and to give thanks

0:09:52 > 0:09:57and give to you all the little ones and young people in this hospital...

0:09:57 > 0:09:59VOICE ECHOES AND FADES

0:10:01 > 0:10:06Kirsty isn't a churchgoer, but from the start,

0:10:06 > 0:10:09the chaplains have helped her through the darkest times.

0:10:09 > 0:10:10Are you looking up there?

0:10:15 > 0:10:18Alder Hey's Catholic chaplain, Caroline Ferguson,

0:10:18 > 0:10:21has always been there to give Kirsty support.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23I couldn't agree with you more.

0:10:23 > 0:10:28'As a chaplain at Alder Hey, we do get to know some of the patients

0:10:28 > 0:10:32'very well, especially the ones that are in for a long, long time.'

0:10:33 > 0:10:38Just so wonderful, when I walked in to TCU the other day,

0:10:38 > 0:10:42- and there he was sitting there upright on his own.- Yeah.

0:10:42 > 0:10:47- It was just brilliant. He's done so well recently.- He has come on, yeah.

0:10:47 > 0:10:49Come on in leaps and bounds.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52'To begin with, we wasn't keen speaking to Caroline.'

0:10:52 > 0:10:55Just we had a lot of other things going on, um,

0:10:55 > 0:10:58but as she started coming around more often,

0:10:58 > 0:11:01our conversations got longer and more in depth

0:11:01 > 0:11:05and it was just really nice to have somebody to speak to, um,

0:11:05 > 0:11:09that wasn't medical, that wasn't telling me how sick Carson was.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12She was actually asking how I was feeling,

0:11:12 > 0:11:16how the family was doing at home, and it was really nice to have that.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26'Carson is a very sick little boy

0:11:26 > 0:11:31'and Carson and Kirsty have been in Alder Hey for a very long time.

0:11:31 > 0:11:35'One day, Carson will go home, but he'll keep coming back to Alder Hey'

0:11:35 > 0:11:38and she'll be there for him and I'll be there for her.

0:11:42 > 0:11:46If he can do what he's done, then we can get through this,

0:11:46 > 0:11:49and we WILL get through this, and we will become, hopefully,

0:11:49 > 0:11:52a stronger family unit because of this.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06University is a time when many young people

0:12:06 > 0:12:09lose touch with the religion they've grown up with.

0:12:09 > 0:12:14At Liverpool, chaplains are working hard to keep faith alive on campus.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21Today, Anglican chaplain, James Harding,

0:12:21 > 0:12:24is meeting up with students who need his help.

0:12:24 > 0:12:26'I want to be there for those Christians

0:12:26 > 0:12:29'who're away from the home for the first time

0:12:29 > 0:12:32'and they want to just let loose

0:12:32 > 0:12:36'and experiment and see everything that life's got to offer them,

0:12:36 > 0:12:39'but I am not the religious police.

0:12:39 > 0:12:44'I cannot, because of my own experiences say, "Though shalt not do that."

0:12:44 > 0:12:48'That is not my job. I believe that's the job of the Holy Spirit.'

0:12:53 > 0:12:57I choose to spend all my expenses

0:12:57 > 0:13:03on buying coffee, cakes and drinks for the students that I meet,

0:13:03 > 0:13:06because I believe that's Christian hospitality.

0:13:06 > 0:13:11I believe that Jesus was a generous person and I want to be like that.

0:13:17 > 0:13:22Dan is a first year student looking for a new church in Liverpool

0:13:22 > 0:13:27and he's about to discover there's no such thing as a free lunch.

0:13:27 > 0:13:32So, Dan, I'd really like to invite you to my church, because...

0:13:32 > 0:13:35because we've got a real need for a musician like you.

0:13:35 > 0:13:41You know, I think you would be just perfect in the worship teams,

0:13:41 > 0:13:46because, last year, we had a great guitar player and he graduated,

0:13:46 > 0:13:49so really, we've got a hole that we need filling there

0:13:49 > 0:13:51and I think you'd be a great person to do that.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55If you want to come and play guitar for me, that's fantastic

0:13:55 > 0:13:58- if you want to do that.- Definitely, mate, I'll come and give it a try.

0:13:58 > 0:14:01Yeah, I think it is the best way to find out

0:14:01 > 0:14:05whether you want to be involved or not, because if you don't try,

0:14:05 > 0:14:08- you don't really know, so... - Yeah, that's true.

0:14:08 > 0:14:10- Thanks, mate.- Thanks a lot, mate, see you soon. Bye.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13'I really think that Dan's the kind of guy that I can support'

0:14:13 > 0:14:17and disciple and mentor at his time at university

0:14:17 > 0:14:21and he's going to make an excellent contribution to church,

0:14:21 > 0:14:23you know, and that's how he'll feel

0:14:23 > 0:14:27a real sense of satisfaction and fulfilment in his life.

0:14:27 > 0:14:33Dan's now playing guitar, bass, keys and drums at James's church.

0:14:39 > 0:14:42At Alder Hey Hospital, Carson Hartley is

0:14:42 > 0:14:46about to undergo his 10th operation -

0:14:46 > 0:14:51four hours of surgery on his saliva glands.

0:14:51 > 0:14:55- Does it ever get any easier?- No, no. A lot of people ask me that,

0:14:55 > 0:14:59"It must get easier after, you know, so many," but no, no.

0:14:59 > 0:15:00Every time's the same.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03I think, because it's so unnatural, how he goes to sleep

0:15:03 > 0:15:07and, obviously, it's out of your hands what's happening to him.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11As always, Caroline, the chaplain,

0:15:11 > 0:15:13has come along to give Kirsty support.

0:15:13 > 0:15:21- Thank you.- Hello, little man. Hello! Are you enjoying that? What's this?

0:15:21 > 0:15:25- Oh, that's right. - He says, "Bash Caroline!"

0:15:25 > 0:15:29- Bash Caroline. - Bash Caroline.

0:15:29 > 0:15:32- So you're going down to theatre in a little while?- Yes.

0:15:32 > 0:15:36How long's he going to be in for? Have they given you a time?

0:15:36 > 0:15:38No, about four hours, I think, altogether.

0:15:41 > 0:15:45He was here when he first came in, wasn't he? This was his...

0:15:45 > 0:15:48- Wasn't it here? - I think he's had every bed space.

0:15:48 > 0:15:49LAUGHTER

0:15:49 > 0:15:52- I'm sure he has. - This was his first one.- Yeah.

0:15:53 > 0:15:56MAN: Where are we off to, mate?

0:15:56 > 0:15:58THEY CHATTER

0:15:58 > 0:16:03'Obviously, when he goes to theatre, I have little silent prayers.'

0:16:08 > 0:16:13'I do say things in my head, like, "Please make sure he'll be OK."

0:16:14 > 0:16:18'Every day I look at him, he amazes me that he's still here,

0:16:18 > 0:16:23'that he's fighting, he's strong, you know, he's got some willpower.'

0:16:28 > 0:16:30'It is a miracle. He's brilliant.

0:16:30 > 0:16:33'You know, he's had to come through so much and yet,

0:16:33 > 0:16:35'at the end of it, he smiles every day.'

0:16:46 > 0:16:48In the hospital chapel,

0:16:48 > 0:16:51Kirsty's asked Caroline to light a candle for Carson.

0:16:51 > 0:16:57I firmly believe that, when I light that candle now for Carson,

0:16:57 > 0:17:01and in my mind, I'm saying, "Jesus, look after him,

0:17:01 > 0:17:06"take care, make him better, look after him, look after Kirsty,"

0:17:06 > 0:17:11I'm firmly convinced that what I'm saying, with the help of the candles,

0:17:11 > 0:17:14is wending its way up there, somewhere,

0:17:14 > 0:17:16through the golden gates to Jesus

0:17:16 > 0:17:21and I believe that and that's part of my faith.

0:17:27 > 0:17:31I've had a few days where I've just thought, "I can't do this no more,"

0:17:31 > 0:17:35and then I just look at him and I think, "How can I think that?"

0:17:35 > 0:17:37You know, he's gone through so much,

0:17:37 > 0:17:43he's actually going through this, and he can do it, then so can we.

0:17:47 > 0:17:52At the University, Anglican chaplain, James Harding, has had a call for help.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55OK, I'm on my way to meet a student called Tom.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58Tom is a Christian, he comes regularly to the chapel,

0:17:58 > 0:18:02so I know him quite well, and Tom is going to go home today.

0:18:02 > 0:18:05I'm going to meet him, because I think he's feeling homesick.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10'I'm going to talk to Tom, listen to him, pray with him,

0:18:10 > 0:18:15'but I'll take him to the station as well, so he just knows there's someone that's here for him.'

0:18:17 > 0:18:20- Hi, mate.- How you doing? - Good to see you.

0:18:20 > 0:18:25- Is this the longest you've ever been away from home?- Yeah, it is, it's seven weeks now.

0:18:25 > 0:18:27Yeah, so what are you missing?

0:18:27 > 0:18:29- I'm missing my mum's cooking, definitely.- Yeah.

0:18:29 > 0:18:32- She's a food technology teacher. - Right, so you get well fed at home?

0:18:32 > 0:18:36Yeah, I'm looking forward to that. Also, I miss my church quite a bit,

0:18:36 > 0:18:38because I had a lot of friends there.

0:18:38 > 0:18:43I'm always worried about students going home too early.

0:18:43 > 0:18:46I've seen it so many times in my time in universities that,

0:18:46 > 0:18:51if you go home too early before you've made friends and made good new contacts,

0:18:51 > 0:18:55then you can kind of find it difficult to reintegrate.

0:18:55 > 0:19:00How about, just before I take you to the station, I just pray for you?

0:19:00 > 0:19:02- I'd really like to pray for you. - Thanks.- OK.

0:19:02 > 0:19:06Father God, thank you for Tom, thank you that you've brought him

0:19:06 > 0:19:08and called him to Liverpool...

0:19:08 > 0:19:10VOICE FADES

0:19:18 > 0:19:21'I believe, you know, when the lights go off,

0:19:21 > 0:19:25'and the door closes, and that students are alone in their room,

0:19:25 > 0:19:29'the realities of life hit them then.'

0:19:30 > 0:19:33"There must be more to life than this.

0:19:33 > 0:19:37"There must be some direction and purpose in my life."

0:19:37 > 0:19:41And, hopefully, I'm there to help people through that.

0:19:43 > 0:19:47I mean, my own experience of being a student was very mixed.

0:19:47 > 0:19:51I came to Liverpool to study when I was 18 years old.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54I'd never been away from home before.

0:19:54 > 0:19:59I cut the apron strings and I partied really hard for two years.

0:19:59 > 0:20:04I really pushed the limits of what was acceptable, in terms of drinking alcohol.

0:20:04 > 0:20:09I really pushed the limits in terms of what was acceptable in terms of experimenting with drugs.

0:20:16 > 0:20:20And it was a Christian friend that picked me up

0:20:20 > 0:20:25and cleaned me down and loved me back into church.

0:20:25 > 0:20:29- OK, God bless.- Thanks a lot. - Have a safe journey.- God bless. - OK, see you soon.

0:20:29 > 0:20:33'So I want to be there for people that are in that situation.

0:20:34 > 0:20:39'This job is so rewarding and so fulfilling,'

0:20:39 > 0:20:43because I get to share people's lives, share people's journeys,

0:20:43 > 0:20:45I get to walk with them a little bit

0:20:45 > 0:20:47and I believe I'm right where God wants me to be.

0:20:49 > 0:20:52It's not a job, it's a calling and I'd I do it

0:20:52 > 0:20:55regardless of whether I got paid or not.

0:20:55 > 0:20:59Tom came back to Liverpool and, with James's support,

0:20:59 > 0:21:01is settling into university life.

0:21:11 > 0:21:15Carson Hartley is recovering from his 10th operation.

0:21:15 > 0:21:20But the surgeons have given Kirsty some bad news about his future.

0:21:20 > 0:21:25They've said that he's probably not going to speak. Um...

0:21:27 > 0:21:31I was obviously upset. It's not a nice thing to hear.

0:21:31 > 0:21:36Like I said, it's just another thing to add to his list.

0:21:36 > 0:21:40And they actually confirmed that he has moderate hearing loss

0:21:40 > 0:21:42and he's now getting fitted for hearing aids.

0:21:44 > 0:21:48You know, sometimes, when he looks at me, I think, "Why you? Why us?"

0:21:48 > 0:21:51You know, um, and then, when he smiles at you, you think,

0:21:51 > 0:21:56"How can you smile?" you know, "What reason have you got to smile for?"

0:21:56 > 0:21:58We've come this far,

0:21:58 > 0:22:02so it doesn't matter if it's going to take another five years,

0:22:02 > 0:22:0710 years, 15 years, we're going to be there 100% behind Carson,

0:22:07 > 0:22:11um, and they are little steps that we have to take

0:22:11 > 0:22:15and each day's an extra step towards, hopefully,

0:22:15 > 0:22:17a better future for him.

0:22:19 > 0:22:22You know, as long as he's here, we're going to be here behind him.

0:22:33 > 0:22:36HORN BLOWS

0:22:36 > 0:22:39DANCE MUSIC

0:22:42 > 0:22:45Here you go, girls. Are you going to put them on?

0:22:49 > 0:22:50At their base on Church Street,

0:22:50 > 0:22:55the street pastors hand out water and free flip-flops.

0:22:55 > 0:22:58Oh, yeah, thanks. Thanks for them. Thank you.

0:22:58 > 0:23:00Go on, you can put them on now.

0:23:00 > 0:23:03There's nothing worse than staying in heels all night

0:23:03 > 0:23:06when you feel sick, cold, like on a night like this,

0:23:06 > 0:23:10and you want to go home. And you just, you can't be bothered

0:23:10 > 0:23:15walking two miles for a taxi in shoes like that.

0:23:15 > 0:23:18Here you are.

0:23:18 > 0:23:21People are coming up now and they are saying to us,

0:23:21 > 0:23:23"Are you the people who sell flip-flops?"

0:23:23 > 0:23:27And we say, "No, we give flip-flops away," so they still haven't

0:23:27 > 0:23:29quite got the message that we're not out to make money.

0:23:36 > 0:23:39- LAUGHTER - This is what they did.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42I feel amazing.

0:23:42 > 0:23:44They made my birthday.

0:23:44 > 0:23:46LAUGHTER

0:23:46 > 0:23:51It just shows you how many young ladies walk around with nothing on their feet and, er,

0:23:51 > 0:23:54you might've noticed earlier on, we picked up a few bottles as well.

0:23:54 > 0:23:57The reason behind that was because, you know, they get broken,

0:23:57 > 0:23:59they're walking around with nothing on their feet,

0:23:59 > 0:24:02It's dangerous, you know, for 'em and, also, they can be used

0:24:02 > 0:24:05for weapons as well, of course, so, er...

0:24:05 > 0:24:08if we remove them from the street, it makes it a safer place.

0:24:08 > 0:24:10SIREN BLARES

0:24:14 > 0:24:18It's 3am and the city centre's busier than ever.

0:24:18 > 0:24:21The pastors don't preach, but if people ask questions,

0:24:21 > 0:24:24it's an opportunity to get their message across.

0:24:24 > 0:24:30I believe that Jesus exists, yeah, existed. He's dead now, of course.

0:24:30 > 0:24:34Well, he did die, but he rose again.

0:24:34 > 0:24:38- I believe that he taught people how they should live.- OK, that's OK.

0:24:38 > 0:24:43- And for those people to teach again. - Yeah?- That's their test.

0:24:43 > 0:24:47- Well, that's us.- To teach again. - We're used as his disciples.

0:24:47 > 0:24:52- That's a good, that's a good message to portray to the world.- Yeah.

0:24:52 > 0:24:54Jesus gave us freedom.

0:24:54 > 0:24:57- With respect I've got to go. - Thank you.

0:24:57 > 0:25:01It was amazing, because it was them that were asking all the questions.

0:25:01 > 0:25:03- What where they asking you? - Well, asking...

0:25:03 > 0:25:06well, they were asking about Jesus and they were asking about God

0:25:06 > 0:25:09and, you know, what an opportunity

0:25:09 > 0:25:12to, er, answer them and they were ready to listen.

0:25:16 > 0:25:23I was made for this job, because... been there, bought the T-shirt.

0:25:23 > 0:25:27But I haven't been there, got the T-shirt and all that,

0:25:27 > 0:25:29but I still know I'm in the right place

0:25:29 > 0:25:31- and it's not for the same reasons.- No.

0:25:31 > 0:25:35It's because I know there's a lot of lost people out there

0:25:35 > 0:25:38and, yeah, and they're just searching

0:25:38 > 0:25:42and until they find that hole that only God can fill,

0:25:42 > 0:25:45they'll still go on searching in the emptiness.

0:25:47 > 0:25:50There's more to life than this.

0:25:51 > 0:25:54SIRENS ECHO

0:26:07 > 0:26:12Kirsty and her son Carson are still living at Alder Hey Hospital.

0:26:12 > 0:26:16But last summer, before his 10th operation,

0:26:16 > 0:26:19they both got a brief taste of a better future.

0:26:20 > 0:26:24Carson was allowed to leave hospital for the first time.

0:26:24 > 0:26:27It's your big day!

0:26:27 > 0:26:29It was only for a few hours,

0:27:37 > 0:27:39Bye!
