0:04:21 > 0:04:24with 33 ports of call.

0:04:24 > 0:04:29It's going to take 112 days to circumnavigate the globe.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33And the first leg to Acapulco will take three weeks.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35Good afternoon, everyone, welcome.

0:04:35 > 0:04:41Can we just have a short little discussion about words.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43Well, not really a discussion,

0:04:43 > 0:04:46I'll just tell you what we're going to do.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50Sue Alderson is a seasoned choir mistress

0:04:50 > 0:04:53but a relative newcomer to the world of cruising.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56'We went, last August, on a cruise of Norway

0:04:56 > 0:04:58'and there was a choir on board.'

0:04:58 > 0:05:02I was chatting to the lady and she just said, why don't you apply?

0:05:02 > 0:05:04Why don't you have a go?

0:05:04 > 0:05:07# I'm a nurse.. #

0:05:07 > 0:05:10I was thinking, two weeks round the Med, that'll be really nice.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12About two weeks later they rang to say

0:05:12 > 0:05:15we'd like you to go on the world cruise in January, four months.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17I'm like, oh!

0:05:17 > 0:05:21She has ambitious and appropriate plans.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24A full-scale production of The Pirates Of Penzance.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27# Pirates... #

0:05:27 > 0:05:31Some people are perfect for their roles.

0:05:31 > 0:05:33# I am a pirate king

0:05:33 > 0:05:35# Hurrah, hurrah... #

0:05:35 > 0:05:39I was a Master at Arms in the Royal Navy, when I retired

0:05:39 > 0:05:41after some 25 years of service.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44and I've loved singing, which is why I'm here.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46# Hey! #

0:05:46 > 0:05:50But Gerald Toghill is less keen on homework.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52So all I need you to do is just say them.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54If I can read the words I'll do them,

0:05:54 > 0:05:57but I'm not here to learn words, I'm hear to sing.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59You don't have to learn them, just say them.

0:05:59 > 0:06:03'I do have this nagging suspicion at the back of what

0:06:03 > 0:06:05'passes for a mind'

0:06:05 > 0:06:08that life is too short, on a cruise like this,

0:06:08 > 0:06:11to be sitting in a cabin learning words.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14Casting the female lead is more difficult.

0:06:14 > 0:06:21Mabel is a young maiden and not many young maidens on this cruise.

0:06:21 > 0:06:23Somebody's going to have to be brave here.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25Sue, what about you?

0:06:25 > 0:06:28Let's have Sue. Come forward.

0:06:28 > 0:06:32# Poor wandering one

0:06:32 > 0:06:35# If such poor love as mine

0:06:37 > 0:06:39# Can help you find

0:06:39 > 0:06:42# True peace of mind

0:06:42 > 0:06:48# Why, take it, it is thine. #

0:06:48 > 0:06:51Singing is something that gives you confidence

0:06:51 > 0:06:53in the rest of your life. I think it's so good.

0:06:53 > 0:06:57Now, is there anyone else, now that these brave people have done it,

0:06:57 > 0:07:00somebody else will think "Oh, I'll have a go now"?

0:07:00 > 0:07:03'It can take your mind off any troubles that you have

0:07:03 > 0:07:05'and I think for that'

0:07:05 > 0:07:08it's an excellent thing for people to do.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10I'm sorry, I've forgotten your name.

0:07:10 > 0:07:11Come on, Eileen.

0:07:11 > 0:07:15Eileen! Eileen, right.

0:07:15 > 0:07:19Don't worry about your sore throat and things, we'll see through that.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21And...

0:07:21 > 0:07:24# Poor wandering one

0:07:24 > 0:07:28# If such poor love as mine

0:07:29 > 0:07:32# Can help you find

0:07:32 > 0:07:35# True peace of mind

0:07:35 > 0:07:40# Why, take it, it is thine. #

0:07:40 > 0:07:43Lovely, lovely, lovely.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48- Would you do it for us? - OTHERS: Yes! Yes.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50The answer you're looking for is "yes".

0:07:50 > 0:07:55- Is that what I'm looking for? - Yes, Sue. Yes, Sue.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58'You know what they say about a volunteer?

0:07:58 > 0:08:00'He's a man who didn't understand the question!'

0:08:04 > 0:08:07When we set out on a world cruise,

0:08:07 > 0:08:11we've obviously got to come out of cold winter weather from Europe.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14Then we set off south west towards the Caribbean,

0:08:14 > 0:08:18then the ship is completely transformed because suddenly

0:08:18 > 0:08:22it's like taking the lid off, and all the people come out and sit

0:08:22 > 0:08:27on the sun beds, on the top decks and it's quite a different atmosphere.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34I try to be available to everyone by being around

0:08:34 > 0:08:36so they can approach me.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38Sometimes, it takes me quite a long time

0:08:38 > 0:08:40to get round the deck during the day.

0:08:40 > 0:08:43I think that's why I do the early morning walk.

0:08:43 > 0:08:45TANGO MUSIC

0:08:45 > 0:08:50Each person's got a story, it's usually very personal stories.

0:08:50 > 0:08:55And, yes, I learn quite a lot about a great number of people.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58Honeymooners Bob and Viv Speding are madly in love.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04Viv and I met about three years ago on a cruise

0:09:04 > 0:09:07and Viv stood out because, to be honest, she was wearing

0:09:07 > 0:09:11quite sort of funky gear, and was wearing some quite funky glasses

0:09:11 > 0:09:15which really contrasted with most of the, fairly typical,

0:09:15 > 0:09:18middle aged or elderly women that were on the cruise.

0:09:18 > 0:09:23This is my honeymoon nightie so I'll quickly put that away,

0:09:23 > 0:09:27because, you know, you still, you might be over 60 but,

0:09:29 > 0:09:33you still have to, erm, you still enjoy cuddles.

0:09:34 > 0:09:37There is no smiling in Tangos.

0:09:37 > 0:09:41I suppose the only thing that I would say about Vivian

0:09:41 > 0:09:43that could be broadcast,

0:09:43 > 0:09:47is that she is absolutely amazing, physically,

0:09:47 > 0:09:50for a woman of her age.

0:09:52 > 0:09:54But the same can't be said for Bob.

0:09:57 > 0:10:02I've met this marvellous man in the autumn of my life

0:10:02 > 0:10:05and I don't want to lose him.

0:10:05 > 0:10:08You know, we've got to enjoy life and make memories together

0:10:08 > 0:10:12and I just want him to be a bit healthier because he isn't.

0:10:13 > 0:10:17Bob has diabetes and weighs over 21 stone.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20A lethal combination.

0:10:20 > 0:10:25So Viv's challenged him to lose five kilos, before Acapulco.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28Well, I'm walking along the deck as part of my regime

0:10:28 > 0:10:31to lose a bit of weight.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34I actually had an egg Florentine for breakfast today

0:10:34 > 0:10:36so I'm going to do an extra lap.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41This is the bows. You can see...

0:10:41 > 0:10:44Oh, look, we're not far from land because we've got a bird.

0:10:44 > 0:10:48So the walkers cross this corner here,

0:10:48 > 0:10:52and if he wears a nice, bright colour I know it's him,

0:10:52 > 0:10:55and all that lovely dark hair.

0:10:55 > 0:10:59Oh, there he is! That's how I feel.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02Just very much in love, actually.

0:11:02 > 0:11:06So much so, it brings tears to my eyes.

0:11:06 > 0:11:08I'm so lucky.

0:11:08 > 0:11:13# Take heart, no danger lasts... #

0:11:15 > 0:11:19Colin's always looking for ways to increase his congregation.

0:11:19 > 0:11:23So, we're all speaking from the same hymn sheet as it were.

0:11:23 > 0:11:27Colin's here. Can you just spare Colin for a minute or two?

0:11:27 > 0:11:28He's a doctor of divinity.

0:11:30 > 0:11:32# There's a doctor of divinity

0:11:32 > 0:11:34# Resides in this vicinity

0:11:34 > 0:11:37# For a doctor, doctor Resides in this vicinity

0:11:37 > 0:11:41# This vicinity! #

0:11:41 > 0:11:43APPLAUSE

0:11:46 > 0:11:48Thanks for that.

0:11:48 > 0:11:52I appreciate that not all of you want to come to the Sunday services

0:11:52 > 0:11:57but there's a slot whenever you'd like to fill it.

0:11:57 > 0:12:02# Doctor of divinity. #

0:12:07 > 0:12:12The island of Madeira is Balmoral's first port of call.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15An opportunity for everyone to stretch their legs.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19This is my first time for doing a choir on board.

0:12:19 > 0:12:21It's pretty hectic, those first two or three days.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23I wondered what had hit me.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25It's like...

0:12:25 > 0:12:28Everyone's thoroughly enjoying it, and that's the most important thing.

0:12:28 > 0:12:32- They seem to be.- It's lovely sitting in the sun, feels so good. - It's fabulous.

0:12:32 > 0:12:36- What a contrast!- Who would think? Who would think?

0:12:36 > 0:12:39But Sue's worried about much more than the choir.

0:12:41 > 0:12:45My mother, erm, she's got dementia so she's in a home

0:12:45 > 0:12:47so that bit has been difficult yes, yes.

0:12:47 > 0:12:52She had a fall and ended up in hospital for five or six weeks

0:12:52 > 0:12:54and that's, kind of, taken all her muscles.

0:12:54 > 0:12:57- Yes, and it takes a lot out of you. - That's right.

0:12:57 > 0:13:01Mum had a fall and she was in a, sort of, respite home

0:13:01 > 0:13:03and she broke her ankle in three places.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06She was in plaster for, oh, it was just awful,

0:13:06 > 0:13:10- about ten weeks, but she came through it.- Yes, yes.

0:13:11 > 0:13:15Sue is the primary carer for her 93-year-old mum.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18And she's never been away for so long.

0:13:20 > 0:13:24There are a lot of people on board and most of them are very concerned

0:13:24 > 0:13:28about their families, and, of course, there's an anxiety about

0:13:28 > 0:13:33elderly people at home for those that are on board who have parents still living.

0:13:34 > 0:13:36I'm a bit concerned about Mum.

0:13:38 > 0:13:40Have you been in touch?

0:13:40 > 0:13:43Well, I tried to get in touch by video link

0:13:43 > 0:13:46but no signal.

0:13:46 > 0:13:48It all just fell apart.

0:13:48 > 0:13:52When I tried to ring, when we did have signal,

0:13:52 > 0:13:55it's impossible to have a conversation because she's just,

0:13:55 > 0:13:58"When are you coming home? When are you coming home?

0:13:58 > 0:14:01"I can't cope without you."

0:14:01 > 0:14:05- So it is anxious making.- Yeah.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08Let's hope she keeps going.

0:14:08 > 0:14:13There is going to be the time, isn't there, when she will slip away.

0:14:13 > 0:14:17- Oh, yes.- But hopefully you'll be home when that happens.

0:14:18 > 0:14:20I was lucky it happened with me

0:14:20 > 0:14:24so we were able to be with Mum when she died, yeah.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33800 miles west of Madeira, the captain has no choice

0:14:33 > 0:14:36but to turn the ship around.

0:14:36 > 0:14:38We have a medical emergency on board

0:14:38 > 0:14:41and one of our guests needs to be immediately evacuated.

0:14:42 > 0:14:45The boat never stops. It's going the same speed

0:14:45 > 0:14:48and the helicopter is actually, it follows the boat

0:14:48 > 0:14:50and it's done so well.

0:14:50 > 0:14:52The line comes down, the guy comes down with all the equipment,

0:14:52 > 0:14:57they've got the patient on the cradle or whatever it is,

0:14:57 > 0:14:58and then they lift him up.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01I was with her for about an hour.

0:15:01 > 0:15:04The lady was travelling on her own.

0:15:06 > 0:15:08She was having to take liquid morphine

0:15:08 > 0:15:10because she was in such great pain.

0:15:10 > 0:15:14She appreciated having someone sit with her.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17She celebrated her birthday on Wednesday

0:15:17 > 0:15:20and they brought her birthday cards.

0:15:20 > 0:15:23She was most concerned about her teddy bear.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26So, that had to be packed as well.

0:15:27 > 0:15:31When there's a crisis on board it's always useful to have the chaplain

0:15:31 > 0:15:35just to bring them some comfort in a way that, perhaps,

0:15:35 > 0:15:38the other staff may not suggest that they say a prayer with a person

0:15:38 > 0:15:41or gave them that sort of support that God was with them

0:15:41 > 0:15:44to help them through a very tough time.

0:15:47 > 0:15:51Balmoral is now 15 hours behind schedule.

0:15:51 > 0:15:55One of the Caribbean stops must be sacrificed.

0:15:55 > 0:16:00Unfortunately, Tortola will be cancelled.

0:16:00 > 0:16:04I'm really sorry for that, but I hope everybody understands that

0:16:04 > 0:16:08a medical emergency and saving a human life is top priority for us.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12It's one of those things that happens at sea

0:16:12 > 0:16:16and I think it's something we all accept, is that the human life element

0:16:16 > 0:16:19is far more important than our pleasure and holidays.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22We get the same time away, we lose a stop, but that's absolutely fine.

0:16:24 > 0:16:26The captain was hoping to make up time

0:16:26 > 0:16:28but there's bad weather ahead.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31For the next couple of days we are looking into a low pressure,

0:16:31 > 0:16:34which we can see it here in the middle of the Atlantic,

0:16:34 > 0:16:37which is going to be moved more south

0:16:37 > 0:16:39and is going to collide exactly with our course.

0:16:41 > 0:16:43I think we've got next Sunday.

0:16:43 > 0:16:44Oops!

0:16:46 > 0:16:48Despite the stormy seas,

0:16:48 > 0:16:52the choir have turned up at Colin's morning service.

0:16:53 > 0:16:58# Hail to the Lord's anointed

0:16:58 > 0:17:02# Great David's greater Son... #

0:17:03 > 0:17:08The choir always lifts up the people and it makes worshiping God that much easier.

0:17:08 > 0:17:12And I'm so glad that we've got Sue because she really does

0:17:12 > 0:17:15inspire people and they contributed splendidly.

0:17:15 > 0:17:19# ..to us in love. #

0:17:21 > 0:17:24Viv's also come to seek advice on Bob's health.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27I wonder might you have five minutes to spare?

0:17:27 > 0:17:30- Yes, if you could hang on?- Yes. - Yes? That would be fine.

0:17:30 > 0:17:33I understand, to everyone's surprise,

0:17:33 > 0:17:37considering your nice flat tummy and svelte form,

0:17:37 > 0:17:39that you are a diabetic.

0:17:39 > 0:17:44We tend to assume diabetics are plump people.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47Well, it's because they're plump they become diabetic.

0:17:47 > 0:17:50It's the weight that is part of the problem.

0:17:50 > 0:17:52Do you have, do you suffer from diabetes?

0:17:52 > 0:17:55No, I don't but my lovely new husband does.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59He is, he's very large.

0:17:59 > 0:18:03'I think the biggest problem is, the buffets all look so good

0:18:03 > 0:18:06'so you have a spoonful of one, a spoonful of another.'

0:18:06 > 0:18:08These are my favourite - herring.

0:18:08 > 0:18:11They're in a slightly sweet vinegar.

0:18:11 > 0:18:14'By the time you know where you are, you actually have a plate

0:18:14 > 0:18:17'that is piled high, looking a bit like Mount Etna

0:18:17 > 0:18:20'or something like that.'

0:18:20 > 0:18:23The important thing is knowing you've got to have exercise

0:18:23 > 0:18:27and you've got to cut back on sweet things and cut back on food in general.

0:18:27 > 0:18:31Hopefully, because I can see my toes now when I stand up,

0:18:31 > 0:18:34which is a new experience for me for some time,

0:18:34 > 0:18:37I feel that when I come to weigh myself,

0:18:37 > 0:18:40that I will actually have lost at least a little weight.

0:18:40 > 0:18:42Well, they say you should have breakfast like a king,

0:18:42 > 0:18:46lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper.

0:18:46 > 0:18:49But we never do it that way round, do we?

0:18:53 > 0:18:57The Balmoral has now crossed the Atlantic and the Caribbean.

0:18:59 > 0:19:03And on day 19, arrives at one of the wonders of the modern age -

0:19:03 > 0:19:05the Panama Canal.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10It is an exciting moment for the passengers, of course,

0:19:10 > 0:19:13it's a very spectacular view and as we are changing the oceans

0:19:13 > 0:19:15after transiting the Panama Canal,

0:19:15 > 0:19:18we are going to get into the Pacific Ocean.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21The canal is a massive feat of engineering.

0:19:21 > 0:19:26It's over 50 miles long and 7.5 million tones of concrete

0:19:26 > 0:19:28were used in its construction.

0:19:28 > 0:19:31When you think that was done about a 100 years ago,

0:19:31 > 0:19:35it's absolutely amazing, the technological effort that was put into it.

0:19:37 > 0:19:41This, for me, is the culmination of a life's dream.

0:19:41 > 0:19:43I've done all the other canals,

0:19:43 > 0:19:46but I've never managed to make this one in my naval career.

0:19:46 > 0:19:51It cuts off that horrendous voyage around Cape Horn.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54I've done that a couple of times, and I can tell you,

0:19:54 > 0:19:56it sure makes your eyes water.

0:20:00 > 0:20:02Just met some lovely, lovely people

0:20:02 > 0:20:06and it's going to be really sad when some of them get off in Acapulco.

0:20:06 > 0:20:08It's going to be really difficult.

0:20:16 > 0:20:20The choir have three days to perfect The Pirates Of Penzance

0:20:20 > 0:20:24so Sue is cranking up rehearsals and leading by example.

0:20:31 > 0:20:34It's the top of the tide and we must be away.

0:20:34 > 0:20:36No, no, no, we've got Ruth's song first.

0:20:36 > 0:20:40'The Pirate King, he's my big teddy bear now.'

0:20:40 > 0:20:43He's really come on, he's worked hard.

0:20:43 > 0:20:47No. "But I'll be true". Stop, stop, stop.

0:20:47 > 0:20:50Today, I fluffed my lines a couple of times.

0:20:50 > 0:20:53- The dreadful month of September... - February.

0:20:53 > 0:20:55LAUGHTER

0:20:55 > 0:20:58I can't help that, I'm a Cornishman, a bit thick.

0:20:58 > 0:21:01OK, my dear, let's give it whirl.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05Look for a space and go for it, pretend your playing netball.

0:21:05 > 0:21:08'It was very tense. I had to be very bossy, I'm afraid,'

0:21:08 > 0:21:12and say, "You're here, you there, do this, do that", whatever.

0:21:12 > 0:21:15You must be down here because you're speaking.

0:21:15 > 0:21:17Stop, stop, stop.

0:21:17 > 0:21:21If I do that, if I'm pointing down, it's your low notes.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24We got through, it was, it was tricky but we managed it, yeah.

0:21:29 > 0:21:32Sue can forget her worries about the choir and her mum

0:21:32 > 0:21:35on an excursion to Costa Rica.

0:21:43 > 0:21:45and we have to say "pura vida",

0:21:45 > 0:21:49that means everything's good and pure life.

0:21:49 > 0:21:51I have two missing.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53You have two missing?

0:21:53 > 0:21:55Oh, wow.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58Never mind, it doesn't matter. We're on this one round here.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01- Sue, you've got two of mine.- Have I?

0:22:03 > 0:22:06People are travelling for all sorts of reasons.

0:22:06 > 0:22:11Some to get away from home and from some of the difficulties

0:22:11 > 0:22:14they've had there, particularly widows and widowers.

0:22:14 > 0:22:18Some have got real problems back home, which they can't leave behind

0:22:18 > 0:22:21and they're in touch with their families day by day

0:22:21 > 0:22:26and are concerned about folk that are ill, particularly elderly parents.

0:22:26 > 0:22:29Can you see it? It's in those leaves.

0:22:33 > 0:22:39she was 94, and I was always on tenterhooks the whole way round.
