0:02:08 > 0:02:11We've done the Mediterranean a couple of times.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21This is Christopher and Liz Glovers' first round-the-world cruise.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24Well, I think it's amazing.

0:02:24 > 0:02:28I don't think it's something we'll ever do again,

0:02:28 > 0:02:31and Christopher's health hasn't been very good

0:02:31 > 0:02:35so we're taking the opportunity now, while we're able to do it.

0:02:35 > 0:02:41I was still in hospital the morning the ship left Southampton.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44At ten in the morning I was still in Reading,

0:02:44 > 0:02:47in the Royal Berks Hospital, so it was a tight run thing.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50Anyway, he's looking much better, and that's the important thing.

0:02:50 > 0:02:54And the staff, the doctor and the nurse, are very good.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56He's been down to see them and he's doing all right.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02It's like being on a great big old people's home on this ship, isn't it?

0:03:02 > 0:03:05I probably shouldn't say that, but it is!

0:03:08 > 0:03:10Well, a very good morning, ladies and gentlemen.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13We've come together this morning for the preparation

0:03:22 > 0:03:24They're hoping to raise money

0:03:24 > 0:03:27for orphanages in Thailand and the Philippines.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30Last year we raised a fantastic amount of money,

0:03:30 > 0:03:34over £13,000, we raised last year,

0:03:34 > 0:03:37which was quite an amazing sum, so...

0:03:37 > 0:03:39Cruise Director Anthony Borrowdale

0:03:39 > 0:03:43and his assistant, Jennifer Delby, are in charge.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46Everybody comes together to bring it on and make it happen.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49It's a huge event and everyone knows how important it is.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51What else have we got? Splat the Rat...

0:03:51 > 0:03:53It's not a real rat, I have to tell you...

0:03:53 > 0:03:59It's actually our 15th one, so it's a very special one, to be fair.

0:03:59 > 0:04:04Ian Earnshaw and George Ailing are planning on playing the fool.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07Every village has an idiot, but there's a pair on this ship!

0:04:07 > 0:04:09Yeah, there's two of them on here!

0:04:11 > 0:04:14Shall I wear it?

0:04:14 > 0:04:17'I'm being all bandaged up and some blood over me...'

0:04:17 > 0:04:20Hey, George, was that you I pinned?

0:04:21 > 0:04:25'Ian's got these things that people pin on.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27'I don't know what's going to happen, it's just a laugh'

0:04:27 > 0:04:31and we're just going to make as much money as we can.

0:04:31 > 0:04:35Drama Coach Carol Bunyan and Choirmistress Sue Alderson

0:04:35 > 0:04:38are going down to Colin's cabin for a spot of gambling.

0:04:39 > 0:04:44I'm going to do the fruit machine stall with Carol and Sue.

0:04:44 > 0:04:49I'm a female bass. I'm sorry, I have my standards.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51- Are we ready?- And you mustn't laugh.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53- No.- Oh, why not?

0:04:53 > 0:04:56- Deadly serious.- No, no.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59- Deadly serious, right.- OK.

0:04:59 > 0:05:01BELL RINGS ALL: Kerching!

0:05:03 > 0:05:05THEY ALL LAUGH

0:05:07 > 0:05:09It's a laugh.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13The Cruise has arrived in Muscat, Oman,

0:05:13 > 0:05:15where the Glovers are on a mission.

0:05:15 > 0:05:20We're in the Muttrah Souk, which is one of the main markets of Oman.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26And we came here originally two years ago.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30When we came last time,

0:05:30 > 0:05:34I took a photograph of a lovely elderly gentleman,

0:05:34 > 0:05:36and we have the photograph to take back to him.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39It's a big photo of him.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43That's very nice but not just at the moment, thank you.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45'Here's the picture.'

0:05:45 > 0:05:48I thought he was a very good-looking and distinguished man,

0:05:48 > 0:05:52and we will have a look and we will ask, and I'm sure,

0:05:52 > 0:05:55because we've got the picture, someone will recognise him,

0:05:55 > 0:05:57so that's what we are here for.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00It would be lovely to give him the picture, wouldn't it?

0:06:00 > 0:06:02So that's what we're hoping.

0:06:02 > 0:06:06- There's a wonderful smell of incense.- Oh, it's amazing, isn't it?

0:06:06 > 0:06:07I think we've passed it.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11Never mind, we will ask someone.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15I shall be devastated if we don't find him,

0:06:15 > 0:06:17having brought it all this way...

0:06:17 > 0:06:21- ..what about asking these gentlemen? - Yes.- Yes.

0:06:21 > 0:06:25Ah-ha, where's the shop? Yes.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27That's what I thought.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29We will go and have a look. Thank you very much.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31Thank you very much indeed.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35That's wonderful, thank you so much, thank you. Thank you, thank you.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37Some success.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40We're looking for...Said bin Mohammed.

0:06:41 > 0:06:46I took his photograph two years ago and I've brought it back for him.

0:06:46 > 0:06:50- It's the next shop. - Next shop. He's not here?

0:06:50 > 0:06:52He's gone to Iran?

0:06:52 > 0:06:56He's gone to Iran? His son is here.

0:06:56 > 0:07:00It's the next shop, next door. He was sitting there, yes, he was.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03- And is this your father? - No, he's my sponsor.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05- You're working with him?- Yes.

0:07:05 > 0:07:09So may we give that to you? Thank you very much.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20- Oh, well, mission partially accomplished, anyway.- Absolutely.

0:07:28 > 0:07:32For the past two weeks, Captain Stoica has been navigating Balmoral

0:07:32 > 0:07:35through an area infamous for piracy.

0:07:37 > 0:07:42On this particular cruise, we have to pass by the high-risk area

0:07:42 > 0:07:45which is mainly located in the Gulf of Aden.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47And of course, passing through this area,

0:07:47 > 0:07:50we have to take a lot of precautions and arrangements,

0:07:50 > 0:07:53to make sure we don't have any unwanted incidents.

0:07:56 > 0:08:01Balmoral's now heading into the Red Sea and out of the danger zone

0:08:01 > 0:08:04when they have their first encounter with pirates.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13Welcome to our Pirate Party on the poop deck.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16We are now safely through the high-risk, transit area

0:08:16 > 0:08:19without any problems whatsoever.

0:08:19 > 0:08:22So can we have a round of applause for our security team, please.

0:08:22 > 0:08:23Come on, come this way.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26# Ole, ole, ole, ole...#

0:08:26 > 0:08:28After three - hip-hip... Hooray!

0:08:28 > 0:08:31..hip-hip... Hooray!

0:08:31 > 0:08:33..hip-hip... Hooray!

0:08:33 > 0:08:36I'll see you dancing on the dance floor, folks.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38Enjoy the party. Thank you!

0:08:38 > 0:08:40# Feeling hot, hot, hot... #

0:08:45 > 0:08:48It creates a bit of excitement. We all had these navy hats

0:08:48 > 0:08:52and had some rum punch and danced my head off.

0:08:52 > 0:08:54This rum punch kept coming.

0:08:54 > 0:08:58It wasn't weak either, and I had a few glasses!

0:08:58 > 0:09:02It was a great afternoon. I slept well that night!

0:09:02 > 0:09:03# So we go rum, bum, bum, bum

0:09:05 > 0:09:07# Yeah we rum, bum, bum, bum

0:09:10 > 0:09:13# Ole, ole, ole, ole

0:09:13 > 0:09:17# Ole ole, ole ole

0:09:17 > 0:09:19# Yeah we rum, bum, bum, bum

0:09:21 > 0:09:23# Yeah we rum, bum, bum, bum

0:09:25 > 0:09:27# Feeling hot, hot, hot

0:09:28 > 0:09:30# Feeling hot, hot, hot...#

0:09:41 > 0:09:45Well, we came into the Suez Canal this morning at about 4am,

0:09:45 > 0:09:48and so I arranged not to have a service

0:09:48 > 0:09:51because a lot of the passengers would want

0:09:51 > 0:09:54to be out on deck watching as we go through.

0:09:54 > 0:09:56# It's a watercolour morning

0:09:56 > 0:09:58# Get your paintbox and your paper

0:09:58 > 0:10:01# While the sun comes round. #

0:10:01 > 0:10:05I'm painting these little pen and watercolour pictures

0:10:05 > 0:10:09of places we have been to for the country fayre

0:10:09 > 0:10:14and I hope they will sell in some form and that money will go towards

0:10:14 > 0:10:16these orphans, which will be lovely.

0:10:17 > 0:10:21I find I have to do this outside, you can't get the light indoors.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23It's lovely to sit out here in the open

0:10:23 > 0:10:25with the Suez Canal going past,

0:10:25 > 0:10:29which is extraordinary, isn't it? It seems such a long, long time

0:10:29 > 0:10:31since we went through the Panama Canal.

0:10:34 > 0:10:38We have the Queen Victoria behind us, a Cunard ship.

0:10:38 > 0:10:39We're in a big convoy,

0:10:39 > 0:10:42and quite extraordinary to think that at the other end

0:10:42 > 0:10:44when we get to Alexandria,

0:10:44 > 0:10:47we're going to be back in the Mediterranean.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50We've been to so many seas, so many seas.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55Every time I see these masses of sand,

0:10:55 > 0:10:57I think of my dad who was in the RAF

0:10:57 > 0:11:01in 8th Squadron which was in Khormaksar in Aden,

0:11:01 > 0:11:02down the road from here.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04And when I was a very small child

0:11:04 > 0:11:07he would talk Arabic, so if he wanted me to come in

0:11:07 > 0:11:11from playing in the garden it was, "Fisatalle, Camilla, fisatalle."

0:11:11 > 0:11:12And I thought that was English

0:11:12 > 0:11:15and in the playground I'd go "Camilla, fisatalle."

0:11:15 > 0:11:19And I had the whole of West Court Primary School talking half Arabic,

0:11:19 > 0:11:22but I always think of Dad when I look at all the sand.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29Balmoral has docked in the Egyptian port of Alexandria.

0:11:39 > 0:11:43We've come to El Alamein, where there are over 7,000 graves

0:11:43 > 0:11:48of the Allied forces that died here at that battle.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53It's a special place for many people

0:11:53 > 0:11:56and one of our passengers has come who fought here,

0:11:56 > 0:12:00which is a very moving moment for him.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03It's moving for me

0:12:03 > 0:12:08because my father served in the Royal Engineers in North Africa.

0:12:08 > 0:12:10But he then joined the forces

0:12:10 > 0:12:13going across to Sicily and then to Italy.

0:12:13 > 0:12:19And he was killed in September 1944 just outside of Rimini.

0:12:22 > 0:12:24I don't have many memories of my father

0:12:24 > 0:12:28but I can remember being in an Anderson shelter in our garden

0:12:29 > 0:12:33and I can remember sleeping down there and him being there...

0:12:33 > 0:12:36we were as a family, all huddled up,

0:12:36 > 0:12:39spending the nights there when London was being...bombed.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46I was nine when my father was killed,

0:12:46 > 0:12:49and just to add to the pain of it all,

0:12:49 > 0:12:54my sister and I had been evacuated to a house in Leicester

0:12:54 > 0:12:59and so the landlady there was the one who told me that my father had died.

0:13:01 > 0:13:06They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old.

0:13:07 > 0:13:12Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

0:13:12 > 0:13:19At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

0:13:19 > 0:13:21ALL: We will remember them.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52The passengers and crew have rallied together to produce

0:13:52 > 0:13:55all sorts of things for the country fayre.

0:13:56 > 0:14:00I've done these paintings. They're all places we've been to.

0:14:00 > 0:14:01A couple of camels.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04SHE LAUGHS Hey! That's great!

0:14:04 > 0:14:06I've never done camels before.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08The colours are lovely in it, really nice.

0:14:08 > 0:14:12I gave them to Jennifer and she liked them very much,

0:14:12 > 0:14:14and to my surprise they're going to auction them,

0:14:14 > 0:14:16and we just hope they sell.

0:14:16 > 0:14:18We've got so many premium lots, you see,

0:14:18 > 0:14:20so I think it will be a big event.

0:14:20 > 0:14:22She's shown them to some of the ladies

0:14:22 > 0:14:24and they were all very enthusiastic.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27This is my favourite. Yes. They're so colourful.

0:14:27 > 0:14:30They look better than yesterday's camels!

0:14:31 > 0:14:34It's only an ego boost if they sell!

0:14:34 > 0:14:39It's very embarrassing if they don't, so let's wait and see.

0:14:39 > 0:14:41I'll be very nervous on the day, yes.

0:14:41 > 0:14:45I'll probably stay in my cabin while the auction's on.

0:14:50 > 0:14:52Thank you very much. Congratulations to you all

0:14:52 > 0:14:54and thank you very much for the huge efforts.

0:14:54 > 0:14:59Let's have fun, and let's raise as much money as we can,

0:14:59 > 0:15:03and now, officially, I declare the country fayre open.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05CROWD CHEER

0:15:11 > 0:15:16In a parish, invariably, you have a country fayre or a fete

0:15:16 > 0:15:18in the summer, it's a tradition,

0:15:18 > 0:15:23and in my parish, I always had a tea party for the over-sixties.

0:15:28 > 0:15:30Just be careful!

0:15:34 > 0:15:37It is a great atmosphere!

0:15:37 > 0:15:39A highlight for me would be

0:15:39 > 0:15:43Jamie's chest waxing - that was definitely one to remember.

0:15:48 > 0:15:51If anyone wants to put any cash in, be very brave.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00ALL: Ohhh!

0:16:00 > 0:16:03'And if you'd have seen his face, his face...'

0:16:03 > 0:16:06- and the pain...- And his chest was as red as a beetroot after.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09I suggested they pull the wax

0:16:09 > 0:16:14and they pull it up very slowly, but that didn't go down very well.

0:16:14 > 0:16:16Oh, my God! OH!

0:16:17 > 0:16:19That one hurt!

0:16:28 > 0:16:31One person, only one person got the rat today.

0:16:41 > 0:16:44The fruit machine seemed to go really well

0:16:44 > 0:16:47and they raised an awful lot of money.

0:16:47 > 0:16:49Having practised it, we were efficient at it.

0:16:49 > 0:16:53Ker-ching! Ker-ching! Ker-ching!

0:16:57 > 0:17:00We had a great afternoon. My arm is aching

0:17:00 > 0:17:03because it's really quite hard work, but yes, it was very good.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12This type of day

0:17:12 > 0:17:15when you are working side by side with the guests, it's lovely.

0:17:19 > 0:17:22'It's just... You can't compare it to any of the other days,

0:17:22 > 0:17:24'it's just a very special day.'

0:17:24 > 0:17:26I might have one, though!

0:17:26 > 0:17:27We know where that might be!

0:17:29 > 0:17:33I am buzzing because it's gone so well today, it really has.

0:17:33 > 0:17:35We've raised an awful lot of money

0:17:35 > 0:17:38and it's all thanks to the volunteers here on Balmoral,

0:21:03 > 0:21:07and there are lots of activities and also, beginning to have to say

0:21:07 > 0:21:11goodbye to people, because when we get into Southampton,

0:21:11 > 0:21:13everything happens at once and you regret afterwards

0:21:13 > 0:21:16not having said goodbye to some of the people

0:21:16 > 0:21:18who you've spent a lot of time with on the ship.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51I can't imagine me eating jellied eels, I just...
