0:00:12 > 0:00:14are home to some extraordinary fish.

0:00:17 > 0:00:21Across the globe, people have developed ingenious ways

0:00:21 > 0:00:23to catch them for survival...

0:00:23 > 0:00:26and for sport.

0:00:26 > 0:00:27Get it, get it, get it! Lift up!

0:00:27 > 0:00:29The power is just unbelievable.

0:00:29 > 0:00:31I think I've got Jaws on here.

0:00:31 > 0:00:36Now, eight British anglers swap their ordinary fishing haunts

0:00:36 > 0:00:39to compete in the world's wildest waters.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41The feeling I get is just pure excitement.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43We haven't got a clue what we're in for.

0:00:43 > 0:00:47Through extreme temperatures and dangerous currents...

0:00:49 > 0:00:51..they'll learn new techniques...

0:00:51 > 0:00:53Oh, my shoulders are burning.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57..and explore unfamiliar waters...

0:00:57 > 0:01:00This is about as far removed from anything I do at home

0:01:00 > 0:01:03as going and landing on the moon would be.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06..in a fishing competition that spans the globe...

0:01:06 > 0:01:08One little fish could change everything.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11..competing with the elements and with each other

0:01:11 > 0:01:15as they search for the most incredible fish on the planet...

0:01:15 > 0:01:17That is why I go fishing.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22..judged by experts from around the world...

0:01:27 > 0:01:32..and UK fishing legend Matt Hayes, who'll be watching their every move.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35I've fished everything from the local canal

0:01:35 > 0:01:37to the biggest oceans in the world.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40He'll be looking for the ultimate angler.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43My job is to suss out how much is down to luck

0:01:43 > 0:01:45and how much is down to skill.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47This is about finding the best of the best.

0:01:47 > 0:01:52Have they got that extra spark that I call watercraft,

0:01:52 > 0:01:56a sixth sense, an ability to be able to think like a fish

0:01:56 > 0:01:59and come up with tactics to match?

0:01:59 > 0:02:02Each week, the judges will send one person home...

0:02:02 > 0:02:05I just know I can do better than this.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07I'm going to learn. It's a competition.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09..whilst the rest continue to the next country

0:02:09 > 0:02:12and the next leg of their global expedition.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15Only one can win.

0:02:30 > 0:02:35At the very edge of the Arctic Circle is Europe's last wilderness...

0:02:36 > 0:02:38..Iceland.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44From the hot springs surrounding its biggest lake...

0:02:46 > 0:02:50..to the depths of its freezing fjords,

0:02:50 > 0:02:54these waters will be the first test of endurance for our intrepid eight.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57If you've fished in the UK, you might think, "Oh, it's not so bad,

0:02:57 > 0:03:00"we're used to the cold." This is on a whole different level.

0:03:00 > 0:03:04And when the wind starts to blow and you've got a blizzard going,

0:03:04 > 0:03:06it's a pretty intimidating place.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09They will have never fished anywhere like this.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12This is like the moon! One small step for Man...

0:03:12 > 0:03:15Yep, the end of the world, here we come.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19In Iceland, Matt will be judging alongside Vala Arnadottir,

0:03:19 > 0:03:22a professional fly-fisherwoman.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Few people know these waters as well as her.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27The fishing in Iceland can be very challenging.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29Our season starts in April,

0:03:29 > 0:03:31and you can see fishermen completely freezing.

0:03:31 > 0:03:33You know, they can't even tie their tackle!

0:03:33 > 0:03:35And there's snow everywhere.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37As a fisherman, to be in Iceland,

0:03:37 > 0:03:40it's one of the places that you want to go to to fish,

0:03:40 > 0:03:44and it's killing us, really, not to know what's out there.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48This is a pretty alien situation for me.

0:03:48 > 0:03:52I have no idea what I'm going to be up against.

0:03:52 > 0:03:53Over the next week,

0:03:53 > 0:03:58they'll need to adapt skills from home to succeed in unknown waters.

0:03:58 > 0:03:59Nothing fazes me.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02There's nothing you can throw at me about fishing

0:04:02 > 0:04:04that's going to faze me.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06For one of these anglers,

0:04:06 > 0:04:09this first leg of the expedition will be their last.

0:04:11 > 0:04:15Welcome, everyone, to the Westfjords of Iceland.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18This week is all about endurance.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21You may all think you know about cold-weather fishing,

0:04:21 > 0:04:24but this takes it to a whole new level here.

0:04:24 > 0:04:28I'm very excited to have you all here, so welcome to my country.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31As you can see, it's very beautiful even though it's cold

0:04:31 > 0:04:34and I really hope you enjoy your journey.

0:04:34 > 0:04:36So, Matt, will you explain to everyone

0:04:36 > 0:04:38about this specific challenge?

0:04:38 > 0:04:42This challenge isn't about catching the biggest fish.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44It's not even about catching the most fish.

0:04:44 > 0:04:48It's about catching the most variety of species.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50But, of course, that would be too easy.

0:04:50 > 0:04:54- Oh, here we go!- So you're going to be doing it from a kayak.

0:04:54 > 0:04:59But because there is a lot of luck involved in fishing,

0:04:59 > 0:05:02we are going to be taking into account location,

0:05:02 > 0:05:06technique, type of bait used.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09You've got three hours. Go fish!

0:05:10 > 0:05:14- This is going to be interesting. - Exciting.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16- Give it to me, boys!- Good luck. - Good luck, mate.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25- Let's take these two.- OK. - Bagsy the red one!- OK.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29There are two key things for the fishermen to remember -

0:05:29 > 0:05:31a catch only counts if they touch the fish

0:05:31 > 0:05:35and all fish are to be released unharmed.

0:05:35 > 0:05:39They each have a kayak and an identical kit of fishing essentials.

0:05:39 > 0:05:43- Let's see what we've got.- I think there's everything here we need.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46What on earth is that?

0:05:46 > 0:05:48I'm hoping to catch a fish on this rig.

0:05:48 > 0:05:49What type of fish? I don't now.

0:05:51 > 0:05:52Whatever's out there.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57So, how many different species are there in this fjord?

0:05:57 > 0:06:01We've mainly got a lot of dab. We've got the pollock.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05Then we have the cod, that's easy to catch, compared to the monkfish

0:06:05 > 0:06:07and the scorpion fish, which are much harder.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09Some of the fish feed on the bottom.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12They're rooting around for worms, and crabs and molluscs.

0:06:12 > 0:06:14Some of them will feed around the rocks.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17Some of the fish will be up in the water layers,

0:06:17 > 0:06:19so it's no good just sticking to one technique.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22It would be great if they could actually make some changes,

0:06:22 > 0:06:24and we'll be looking for that.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30Never, ever in my life before have I sat in a kayak.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34Is that the clutch and the accelerator? I'm not quite sure.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37I'm fairly comfortable in a kayak.

0:06:37 > 0:06:41Normally, I'm in the kayak with my husband Johnny,

0:06:41 > 0:06:46so normally he paddles me around like a princess whilst I fish

0:06:46 > 0:06:49and he paddles, so it could be an interesting day for me today.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52Jo only discovered her love of angling

0:06:52 > 0:06:56when she met her childhood sweetheart when they were both 16.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58When I met Johnny, it became apparent that

0:06:58 > 0:07:01if I was going to see him at all, I would have to go along fishing

0:07:01 > 0:07:03with him, but soon enough his passion for fishing

0:07:03 > 0:07:05rubbed off on me.

0:07:05 > 0:07:07If I haven't got Johnny next to me, it'll be difficult.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10I think that I'm so used to having him there

0:07:10 > 0:07:12and it's going to challenge me to see what do I actually know?

0:07:12 > 0:07:14But I would hope that in my head,

0:07:14 > 0:07:17I'll have a little Johnny to try and tell me what to do for the best!

0:07:17 > 0:07:18Let's do it.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20Let's go.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27Bear in mind you've only got three hours.

0:07:29 > 0:07:30Keep an eye on that, yeah?

0:07:36 > 0:07:38OK, we're off.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48Iceland is an island in the far north of the Atlantic Ocean

0:07:48 > 0:07:51and the first test for the anglers is in the Westfjords.

0:07:54 > 0:07:58As the newest country on the planet, the nutrients from the volcanic rocks

0:07:58 > 0:08:01wash into the rivers, lakes and oceans,

0:08:01 > 0:08:06making these fjords fertile grounds for all kinds of species,

0:08:06 > 0:08:11from the flatfish on the bottom to the cod that dominate further up.

0:08:12 > 0:08:14Do you know what? They're all shooting off over there.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16- Well, shall we go that way? - We'll go that way, yeah.

0:08:16 > 0:08:20- Oh, it's rather nice this, isn't it? - It's relaxing, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23Did you watch the boat race the other day?

0:08:23 > 0:08:27Matt and Vala will be watching the anglers' fishing techniques,

0:08:27 > 0:08:29as well as keeping tally of everyone's catch.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34- Shall we get the lines in the water? - Yeah, that's the thing to do now.

0:08:34 > 0:08:39Right, I've got these tiny little hooks on with tiny bits of bait,

0:08:39 > 0:08:42so fingers crossed, we're going to give that a try.

0:08:44 > 0:08:48The anglers have been given the basic tackle needed for sea fishing -

0:08:48 > 0:08:49a rod and a reel of line.

0:08:51 > 0:08:55A lead weight of just the right size takes the hook to the desired depth,

0:08:55 > 0:08:59but crucially, they need something to attract the fish.

0:08:59 > 0:09:03It could be a man-made lure, like a tiny imitation fish,

0:09:03 > 0:09:05or a worm or a piece of squid

0:09:05 > 0:09:08that looks or smells enticing.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11We've given them quite a choice of stuff to use,

0:09:11 > 0:09:14and the way they change that will determine what they catch.

0:09:14 > 0:09:16I hope they will put on maybe squid first.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19It is very visual for the fish, it's white and it's smelly.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22Squid would certainly be on one of my hooks

0:09:22 > 0:09:24and maybe something like mackerel.

0:09:24 > 0:09:28- What have you got now, squid? - A bit of squid and a bit of mussel.

0:09:28 > 0:09:31So, this misconception that many people have

0:09:31 > 0:09:33that you just drop the rod in and leave it...

0:09:33 > 0:09:35No, no, there's so much to it.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37You know, you've got to change the baits around,

0:09:37 > 0:09:39make sure everything looks good as well.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41How long have you been fishing for now?

0:09:41 > 0:09:45- And I don't mean on an Icelandic fjord.- Since I can remember, really.

0:09:45 > 0:09:47My first ever fish was, like, a gudgeon.

0:09:47 > 0:09:51- You remember your first fish?- Yeah, I remember my first fish.- How big?

0:09:51 > 0:09:52It was literally only about that big.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55Ripon grew up in Bedfordshire and he still fishes

0:09:55 > 0:09:59on the same stretch of river his father took him to as a child.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02When I started fishing with Dad, I was four or five years old.

0:10:02 > 0:10:04I was a bit afraid asking Dad for a hook, etcetera,

0:10:04 > 0:10:08so I used to nick Mum's sewing needles and pins

0:10:08 > 0:10:10and used to make little hooks out of them.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13When you're fishing, there's a certain smell to the water.

0:10:13 > 0:10:15There's no other smell like it, it brings me back

0:10:15 > 0:10:18to when I first was fishing with Dad.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20Oh, I thought I just had a bite then.

0:10:28 > 0:10:30Yeah, fish on!

0:10:30 > 0:10:32- Whoa, good one!- Fish on!

0:10:32 > 0:10:35Fish on!

0:10:35 > 0:10:38- What have you got? - Like a little plaice or something.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43- Oh, it's come off! - Oh, no.- For God's sake!

0:10:45 > 0:10:48When an angler thinks there's something at the end of the line,

0:10:48 > 0:10:51a flick of the rod at just the right moment

0:10:51 > 0:10:53should set the hook in the fish's mouth.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56I hooked it and it just wiggled me off.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59Really frustrating because it doesn't count, I didn't touch it.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01This technique is known as striking

0:11:01 > 0:11:04and can mean the difference between success...

0:11:04 > 0:11:05and failure.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07- GEOFF:- I think I had a bite, then,

0:11:07 > 0:11:10um, and I struck it too soon.

0:11:10 > 0:11:12Geoff's had two bites while we've been here

0:11:12 > 0:11:13and he's struck them both too soon.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16His nerves meant that he reacted far too quickly

0:11:16 > 0:11:18and he's missed his chance now.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21It looks like many of them are actually striking too soon.

0:11:21 > 0:11:23They should really know, they shouldn't do that.

0:11:23 > 0:11:25But Dan...

0:11:25 > 0:11:26and Phil

0:11:26 > 0:11:28are taking their time.

0:11:32 > 0:11:33Fish on, Phil?

0:11:33 > 0:11:35I had a knock.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48- BOTH:- Fish on.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55It's only a small, flat fish, but at least it's a fish.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59The hook comes out easy. OK? And back he goes.

0:11:59 > 0:12:04All the anglers are using barbless hooks which are kinder to the fish.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07And Phil's flatfish, a dab, is the first catch of the day.

0:12:07 > 0:12:08I'm going to change my rig now

0:12:08 > 0:12:11because I don't to be catching the same again.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14And I'm just going to go from there and see what else I can pick up.

0:12:14 > 0:12:15Fish on!

0:12:17 > 0:12:18Great.

0:12:18 > 0:12:20But others aren't far behind.

0:12:20 > 0:12:22Oi-oi!

0:12:22 > 0:12:23Fish on!

0:12:25 > 0:12:27Fish on!

0:12:29 > 0:12:31I've caught my first fish in Iceland

0:12:31 > 0:12:33so I'm very happy about that.

0:12:33 > 0:12:35I've got a cod.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37That's one species.

0:12:37 > 0:12:40A nice little scrap on the way up. There it goes.

0:12:42 > 0:12:44What have we got here?

0:12:44 > 0:12:46Right, this can't hang about.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48This little guy.

0:12:50 > 0:12:54Only a tiddler. I think it was one of those scorpion fish.

0:12:54 > 0:12:57It's a weaver type thing with its big fins. Like this.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02Geoff has been fishing for over 60 years

0:13:02 > 0:13:06and his first catch is one of his earliest memories.

0:13:06 > 0:13:08I was on holiday with my mum and dad down in Kent

0:13:08 > 0:13:12and there was an old boy fishing and he gave me a worm

0:13:12 > 0:13:17and he helped me cast out and I caught my first fish

0:13:17 > 0:13:21on rod and line and it was a little baby trout and it was about so big.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24It had all the spots and it was wet and slimy,

0:13:24 > 0:13:26everything that a little kid loves.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29It was a magic thing for me.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38Two hours left.

0:13:40 > 0:13:41Dan,

0:13:41 > 0:13:43Phil,

0:13:43 > 0:13:45Geoff, and Sam

0:13:45 > 0:13:47all have one species each.

0:13:47 > 0:13:50That's cod off the list, we want to try some different bait now.

0:13:50 > 0:13:51The fact the cod took the prawn

0:13:51 > 0:13:54means they're obviously tuned into that at the moment

0:13:54 > 0:13:55and I've already caught a cod today.

0:13:55 > 0:13:59It's a multi-species challenge so we'll try something different.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01Emma is still hoping to strike it lucky

0:14:01 > 0:14:05by sticking with her first choice of location and bait.

0:14:05 > 0:14:10I'm just drifting gently, hoping that I might meet a fish.

0:14:10 > 0:14:12I haven't had any luck so far

0:14:12 > 0:14:15but I'm waiting for the really big fish

0:14:15 > 0:14:17and that is going to happen any moment.

0:14:17 > 0:14:20You're looking very relaxed.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23Do you know, all I need now is a vodka and tonic

0:14:23 > 0:14:25and it would be absolutely perfect.

0:14:25 > 0:14:27What do you have on your hook right now?

0:14:27 > 0:14:30I have got a great big massive squid.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33How far is this from the normal fishing you do in Wiltshire?

0:14:33 > 0:14:36This is about as far removed from anything I do at home

0:14:36 > 0:14:39as going and landing on the moon would be.

0:14:41 > 0:14:44Emma comes from a long line of fishing fanatics.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47So, inevitably, it became her passion, too.

0:14:47 > 0:14:50I was a total tomboy as a child.

0:14:50 > 0:14:52I have to say, I was probably a bit feral

0:14:52 > 0:14:56and used to spend most of the time riding around on a pony,

0:14:56 > 0:14:58bareback, or fishing.

0:14:58 > 0:15:03Getting dressed up was my idea of a complete nightmare and still is now.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05SHE LAUGHS

0:15:06 > 0:15:08# Bobbing along

0:15:08 > 0:15:11# Dee-dee, dee-dee, dee-dee... #

0:15:11 > 0:15:15Well, Emma looks like she's enjoying a day out at Margate or something.

0:15:15 > 0:15:19She's having fun. But she really is drifting around aimlessly.

0:15:19 > 0:15:21I think she has more bait on than I had for lunch today.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24- We're not going for sharks here, are we?- No, no.

0:15:24 > 0:15:26- She's feeding the ocean, that's for sure.- Yeah!

0:15:35 > 0:15:38Bait isn't the only option open to the anglers.

0:15:38 > 0:15:41- Phil, shall we try further out? - Yeah.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44Jigs, or lures, are artificial fish

0:15:44 > 0:15:46made from metal, wood, or plastic.

0:15:46 > 0:15:51Attached to the end of the line, lures come in all shapes and sizes

0:15:51 > 0:15:55to draw the attention of and then hook predatory fish, like cod.

0:15:55 > 0:15:58You're just dropping it into the water.

0:15:58 > 0:16:00What we're going to do is lift the rod

0:16:00 > 0:16:02and let the lure flutter back down.

0:16:02 > 0:16:05It's a bit like playing with a kitten with a ball of wool.

0:16:05 > 0:16:08What you're trying to do is make the kitten grab it.

0:16:08 > 0:16:10You're putting it in the fish's face

0:16:10 > 0:16:12and you're trying to get it to strike.

0:16:12 > 0:16:13Let's have a jig here.

0:16:13 > 0:16:15Jig here.

0:16:15 > 0:16:18Most of the anglers are switching between natural bait and lures.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20Only James is using both.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23The original one I had on was that lure there.

0:16:23 > 0:16:24It's a weighted lure.

0:16:24 > 0:16:27I wasn't catching anything, so I used the baited trace

0:16:27 > 0:16:31but I've taken the lure off, so I've got the best of both worlds now.

0:16:31 > 0:16:32Ahoy there.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34How are you doing, Ben, are you all right?

0:16:34 > 0:16:37Are you listening to all the other kayaks? All your competitors?

0:16:37 > 0:16:40Yeah, I heard Geoff shout before so obviously he's had one.

0:16:40 > 0:16:41That's why I changed my tactics.

0:16:45 > 0:16:47No. That was definitely it.

0:16:47 > 0:16:48A thud, thud, thud.

0:16:55 > 0:16:57It's just the bottom, there. Sorry, mate.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59Don't worry about me.

0:17:01 > 0:17:03Sorry, man, I'm concentrating here.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06- There we go. - You've got one?- Yeah.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12Oh.

0:17:17 > 0:17:21There we go. That is an absolutely tiny, tiny, little tiddler.

0:17:21 > 0:17:26- Every little fish counts.- They all count. I'm off and getting it.

0:17:26 > 0:17:29I think that fish partly counts as mine, by the way.

0:17:29 > 0:17:33'There's just an hour left and three anglers have yet to catch -

0:17:33 > 0:17:34'Ripon...'

0:17:34 > 0:17:36Come on, fishes.

0:17:36 > 0:17:37'..Emma...'

0:17:37 > 0:17:38Aargh!

0:17:38 > 0:17:40'..and Jo..'

0:17:40 > 0:17:42Let's stop messing about and go and catch some fish.

0:17:42 > 0:17:44Just change our tactics slightly.

0:17:44 > 0:17:45Come into the shallows here

0:17:45 > 0:17:47and see if we can use bait to catch a flatfish.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49My toes and fingers are a little bit nippy.

0:17:49 > 0:17:52At the minute, I'm so determined to try and catch a fish,

0:17:52 > 0:17:53I'm not really noticing.

0:17:53 > 0:17:55- EMMA:- Oh, oh, I think I've got something.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58- You've got something? - Oh, yes. Here we go.

0:17:58 > 0:18:00I think I've got a fish on the line.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03But it's not moving how...

0:18:03 > 0:18:06you would sort of expect a fish to move.

0:18:06 > 0:18:10Emma has either got on a very big fish or she's hooked the bottom

0:18:10 > 0:18:12and I think she's playing quite a big fish.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14So there's something out there

0:18:14 > 0:18:15that's eaten that huge piece of bait.

0:18:15 > 0:18:17It's taking a long time.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20- I don't know what she's doing. - It doesn't look like she knows.

0:18:20 > 0:18:23There might be something down there that's rather flat.

0:18:23 > 0:18:25Do you get halibut in this bit?

0:18:27 > 0:18:31With time running out, any new strategy could be worth a go.

0:18:31 > 0:18:35I'm going to try fishing against the rocks of the jetty

0:18:35 > 0:18:38in the hope there will be some small rock species.

0:18:38 > 0:18:41- RIPON:- That's quite a paddle, isn't it?

0:18:41 > 0:18:43Right. I think I will keep trying.

0:18:43 > 0:18:46There's always the next cast. It might be the one.

0:18:46 > 0:18:49- EMMA:- Oh, what do these fish feel like when you catch them?

0:18:49 > 0:18:52I'm looking to see what's going on with Emma - she's been playing that for a while.

0:18:52 > 0:18:56Emma has now been struggling with her catch for 45 minutes.

0:18:57 > 0:18:59I don't know what to do!

0:18:59 > 0:19:03Going to help her will cost Dan his own valuable fishing time.

0:19:03 > 0:19:05Will you give me a hand? Will you have a go at this

0:19:05 > 0:19:07- and see whether you think it's the fish of the bottom.- Yes.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10Unfortunately, I think you've hooked the biggest

0:19:10 > 0:19:12volcanic piece of rock that's in this fjord here.

0:19:12 > 0:19:14There's not much time left.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17I'm going to go for it now, I'm going to move even closer.

0:19:19 > 0:19:21That's definitely a take.

0:19:21 > 0:19:23Fish on!

0:19:25 > 0:19:26I've got a flat fish.

0:19:26 > 0:19:29Yes! I'm so thrilled.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32There are a lot of places around the world were the birds

0:19:32 > 0:19:35congregate like that, they're there for a reason, they could be

0:19:35 > 0:19:37small fish, and where there's small fish, there's bigger fish.

0:19:37 > 0:19:39So, last chance saloon.

0:19:39 > 0:19:41I've had two bites sitting here,

0:19:41 > 0:19:44which is two bites more than I had out there.

0:19:44 > 0:19:46This just feels fishy, it feels better,

0:19:46 > 0:19:48one little fish could change everything.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50Oh, look, look!

0:19:50 > 0:19:51Wa-hey. >

0:19:51 > 0:19:54In he goes. Two species!

0:19:54 > 0:19:58- EMMA:- I think I've really mucked up that challenge, I'm afraid.

0:19:58 > 0:19:59Fish on!

0:19:59 > 0:20:01It's a flat fish. It looks like a plaice.

0:20:01 > 0:20:03I changed my position.

0:20:03 > 0:20:05I think that might have won it.

0:20:05 > 0:20:06- GEOFF:- One last cast.

0:20:11 > 0:20:13- JO:- Yeah? Something on there.

0:20:13 > 0:20:15- Another one of those funny fish. - Yay.

0:20:15 > 0:20:17I think it's a little bit bigger than the first one.

0:20:17 > 0:20:19Time's up, everyone.

0:20:19 > 0:20:21Rods up.

0:20:21 > 0:20:23Get in!

0:20:24 > 0:20:27The three hours out in the fjord are up.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31Six anglers return to shore with catches to their names.

0:20:32 > 0:20:36But Ripon and Emma failed to land anything.

0:20:36 > 0:20:39- Anyone cold?- Freezing, mate. - THEY LAUGH

0:20:39 > 0:20:40Well, congratulations, everyone.

0:20:40 > 0:20:44You have survived your very first Icelandic challenge.

0:20:44 > 0:20:46I think they did, overall, pretty well.

0:20:46 > 0:20:49It's cold outside and it's not in everyone's

0:20:49 > 0:20:51comfort zone to be out in a kayak.

0:20:51 > 0:20:53I thought it was good in parts.

0:20:53 > 0:20:56- A couple of individual pantomimes. - Yes, Emma,

0:20:56 > 0:20:59you got stuck there for quite some time.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02- Ripon, you didn't catch anything. - I lost one.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05Sometimes, you just have a hard day. It's not the last day of fishing.

0:21:05 > 0:21:07Keep your head high.

0:21:07 > 0:21:09'Ripon and Emma may have scored zero today

0:21:09 > 0:21:15'but Dan, Phil, Geoff and Sam all caught one species each.'

0:21:15 > 0:21:19We actually have two fisherfolk here who caught two species.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21James and Jo.

0:21:21 > 0:21:25But we can only really have one winner.

0:21:25 > 0:21:29So, we've decided to go with the person who caught the most fish

0:21:29 > 0:21:31and that is Jo.

0:21:31 > 0:21:33Congratulations. THEY APPLAUD

0:21:33 > 0:21:36Your prize, Jo, is that you get the advantage tomorrow.

0:21:36 > 0:21:39You get to choose your team.

0:21:39 > 0:21:41I'm really, really pleased how that panned out.

0:21:41 > 0:21:44as fishing showed us today, you can spend hours fishing

0:21:44 > 0:21:47and not getting anything and it all happens in the last few minutes.

0:21:47 > 0:21:50- Let's put more wood in here. - What a great day.

0:21:50 > 0:21:53I seriously thought that last fish I caught had clinched it.

0:21:53 > 0:21:55But...

0:21:55 > 0:21:56everyone would be gutted.

0:21:56 > 0:22:00Since we're in Iceland, we should have some local Icelandic delicacy.

0:22:00 > 0:22:03My favourite. This is fermented shark.

0:22:03 > 0:22:07Cheers, everyone, you look very excited. Cheers.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10- Yeah, lovely.- VALA:- Lovely!

0:22:10 > 0:22:11That's disgusting.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14'I would like us all to catch more fish.'

0:22:14 > 0:22:17As we say in fishing, tomorrow is another day.

0:22:17 > 0:22:19The competition is still there to be won.

0:22:19 > 0:22:21And we will be trying harder tomorrow.

0:22:31 > 0:22:32Overnight in the Westfjords,

0:22:32 > 0:22:35the temperature's dropped below zero

0:22:35 > 0:22:37and, now, the anglers are facing

0:22:37 > 0:22:41the second sea fishing task of the expedition.

0:22:41 > 0:22:45The cod is one of the most important fish in Icelandic waters

0:22:45 > 0:22:47and has been since Viking times.

0:22:47 > 0:22:50Today, our anglers are going to have a go using traditional

0:22:50 > 0:22:53cod jigging techniques that have helped shape these communities.

0:22:55 > 0:22:59- It's looking a little bit lumpy out there today.- It is, isn't it?

0:23:02 > 0:23:07Well, this week is all about endurance, and true to form,

0:23:07 > 0:23:11the wind just picked up and the temperature has dropped.

0:23:11 > 0:23:13And, today, you're going in search of

0:23:13 > 0:23:17one of the most important fish in Iceland,

0:23:17 > 0:23:19- the cod.- Get in.- Way!

0:23:19 > 0:23:20And, today,

0:23:20 > 0:23:24you're giving up your sport fishing for commercial fishing.

0:23:24 > 0:23:27Commercial fishing is one of the largest contributors

0:23:27 > 0:23:28to our national income.

0:23:28 > 0:23:33The traditional way of fishing for cod is jigging for it.

0:23:33 > 0:23:36But this is jigging equipment like you haven't used before.

0:23:36 > 0:23:40This is all about your endurance, about your stamina.

0:23:40 > 0:23:44So, go out there, do yourself proud, and don't let us down.

0:23:44 > 0:23:49Yesterday's winner, Jo, your prize was to choose your own teams.

0:23:49 > 0:23:52OK. I feel like I'm choosing a sport team

0:23:52 > 0:23:54and having to leave one person behind.

0:23:54 > 0:23:57But I'm going to choose Dan, I'm going to choose Sam,

0:23:57 > 0:23:59and I'm going to choose James.

0:23:59 > 0:24:02- Sorry, everybody else. - Right, go fish.

0:24:06 > 0:24:08'Each team will be on a boat crewed by local fishermen.'

0:24:08 > 0:24:10Let's go, let's go, let's go.

0:24:10 > 0:24:14'They'll be helping them prepare the rigs they'll use to catch the cod.'

0:24:14 > 0:24:16We want two this side and two the other side, don't we?

0:24:16 > 0:24:20'The team with the heaviest haul will win the challenge.'

0:24:24 > 0:24:28An average adult cod can weigh over 20 pounds,

0:24:28 > 0:24:30so the equipment used to catch them is heavyweight, too.

0:24:31 > 0:24:36A thick nylon line is attached to a winch, not a rod.

0:24:36 > 0:24:37A heavy lead weight is tied

0:24:37 > 0:24:39to the end of the line

0:24:39 > 0:24:42and above it are coloured rubber lures

0:24:42 > 0:24:44designed to imitate sand eels.

0:24:44 > 0:24:46The weight takes the line

0:24:46 > 0:24:47down towards the seabed

0:24:47 > 0:24:49and then the whole rig

0:24:49 > 0:24:51is jigged up and down.

0:24:51 > 0:24:53I've actually done this style of fishing,

0:24:53 > 0:24:54with winches and everything.

0:24:54 > 0:24:57It's really hard work because the weights are very heavy

0:24:57 > 0:24:59and when they're cranking them up,

0:24:59 > 0:25:01it really does burn into your muscles.

0:25:01 > 0:25:05But it looks like they are really transferring their skills from home.

0:25:05 > 0:25:06Like, they are tying the knots.

0:25:06 > 0:25:10So, I think it's good that even though they are not used to deep sea fishing,

0:25:10 > 0:25:13it looks like they are really getting the hang of it quick.

0:25:13 > 0:25:17But that's what I think is fascinating about fishing -

0:25:17 > 0:25:20you can always take some little parts or your mental thinking ways.

0:25:20 > 0:25:23It's only the thickness of the line which we're not used to.

0:25:23 > 0:25:27We're not used to using anything like this thing.

0:25:27 > 0:25:29I've ruined that.

0:25:29 > 0:25:30It's a mess.

0:25:32 > 0:25:33You put six or seven turns in it,

0:25:33 > 0:25:36and you take the bottom part of the loop,

0:25:36 > 0:25:39you pass it through, you pull it tight.

0:25:40 > 0:25:43- And there you go. - I've tied these knots before.

0:25:43 > 0:25:44It's a good universal knot

0:25:44 > 0:25:47that can be used in many different situations.

0:25:47 > 0:25:50Sam has been fishing since he was six years old

0:25:50 > 0:25:53and it's now his way of unwinding from the stresses of life.

0:25:53 > 0:25:56When you've been in work all week in the concrete jungle,

0:25:56 > 0:25:59doing your thing, earning your pennies, paying your bills,

0:25:59 > 0:26:03it's a real... I guess you could call it a form of escapism.

0:26:03 > 0:26:05Some people would do yoga or they'll do meditation.

0:26:05 > 0:26:07For me, fishing does exactly the same sort of thing.

0:26:07 > 0:26:09People say it's very zen, fishing.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11And there's a lot to be said for that.

0:26:15 > 0:26:18You now have a long journey out to those fishing grounds.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21It's going to be cold, it could be pretty bumpy.

0:26:23 > 0:26:25Once you're there, you've got one hour.

0:26:25 > 0:26:26Good luck.

0:26:28 > 0:26:29- Here we go.- Here we go.

0:26:29 > 0:26:33- Out to sea! - All right, guys. See you later.

0:26:40 > 0:26:43The seas around Iceland are so productive

0:26:43 > 0:26:46because of the convergence of two bodies of water.

0:26:46 > 0:26:49The warm Gulf Stream from the south

0:26:49 > 0:26:52meets cold Arctic waters from the north

0:26:52 > 0:26:57and this collision of currents brings nutrients pouring up from the depths.

0:26:58 > 0:27:03These feed the plankton which support the whole marine food chain,

0:27:03 > 0:27:06from the smallest to the biggest creatures in the ocean.

0:27:08 > 0:27:10Oh, yeah, there, there.

0:27:10 > 0:27:11I've never seen a whale before

0:27:11 > 0:27:13so I'm having a lot of firsts on this trip.

0:27:13 > 0:27:18Let's hope I get our first catch of Icelandic cod.

0:27:18 > 0:27:21Iceland is one of the world's leaders in sustainable fishing.

0:27:21 > 0:27:23Strict quotas protect fish stocks

0:27:23 > 0:27:26and the cod here are huge and plentiful.

0:27:26 > 0:27:30I'm actually up here at the business end of the boat with Captain Henrik.

0:27:30 > 0:27:32We are looking at the sea chart.

0:27:32 > 0:27:34That is our road map, it's taking us to the areas

0:27:34 > 0:27:37where we know we will find the biggest shoals of fish.

0:27:37 > 0:27:40After following the map to the fishing grounds,

0:27:40 > 0:27:43the captains have a fish finder

0:27:43 > 0:27:47which uses sonar to pinpoint the shoal.

0:27:47 > 0:27:50- GEOFF:- We have a skipper here and he knows exactly what is down there.

0:27:50 > 0:27:54My tack is to do as I'm told by those that know.

0:27:54 > 0:27:58And those that know are the boatmen on this craft

0:27:58 > 0:28:01because both of them have been fishing this whole area

0:28:01 > 0:28:03all their lives, and one of them is older than me!

0:28:07 > 0:28:10OK, team, the captain has actually now got us

0:28:10 > 0:28:12into a really good position.

0:28:12 > 0:28:15Come on, you scurvy dogs, get at it.

0:28:15 > 0:28:16Go fishing.

0:28:17 > 0:28:19'The captains have cut their engines

0:28:19 > 0:28:22'and the boat should drift above the shoals of cod.'

0:28:22 > 0:28:25Gloves on, ready for action.

0:28:25 > 0:28:29'Any fish caught today will be taken back to town and sold.'

0:28:33 > 0:28:35- Fish on!- Way!

0:28:37 > 0:28:38First fish already.

0:28:38 > 0:28:41Team, what I've found is it's better working it by hand.

0:28:41 > 0:28:45- Working it by hand?- Rather than on the wheel.- Okey-dokey.

0:28:45 > 0:28:49Phil's idea of jigging by hand may make it easier

0:28:49 > 0:28:51to feel if a fish takes the hook.

0:28:53 > 0:28:54Fish!

0:28:55 > 0:28:57It's nice that I've got one.

0:28:57 > 0:29:00Oh, it's come off! Rats and double rats!

0:29:00 > 0:29:03- GEOFF:- I've had two and I've probably lost another 20.

0:29:03 > 0:29:06Another one on now. This feels a good fish, actually.

0:29:06 > 0:29:11Fantastic fishing. Lovely cod. He's about eight to nine pounds.

0:29:11 > 0:29:13It's the biggest cod I've ever caught.

0:29:13 > 0:29:15I'm looking for one bigger now.

0:29:15 > 0:29:18Phil has been fishing since the age of seven,

0:29:18 > 0:29:21using a stick as his first rod.

0:29:21 > 0:29:23But for him, it's not just about the catch.

0:29:23 > 0:29:26It's just the emotion of getting out there

0:29:26 > 0:29:27and being amongst other anglers.

0:29:27 > 0:29:31You might not be the one that catches, but you're amongst a team.

0:29:31 > 0:29:3599% of the time, they'll help you out and say I've caught two on this,

0:29:35 > 0:29:38try this, because everybody wants everybody to catch fish.

0:29:38 > 0:29:43It's gone a little bit quiet. It does that from time to time.

0:29:45 > 0:29:48As soon as Phil and his team have landed their first few cod,

0:29:48 > 0:29:51they are on the hunt again.

0:29:51 > 0:29:53- GEOFF:- I've got two fish.

0:29:53 > 0:29:56If all four of us can get two fish every five minutes for an hour,

0:29:56 > 0:30:01we can probably flatten the other team. Very easily.

0:30:01 > 0:30:03But we don't know how well they're doing yet.

0:30:03 > 0:30:05WINCH SQUEAKS

0:30:09 > 0:30:11Oh, this one needs oil.

0:30:11 > 0:30:12HE LAUGHS

0:30:12 > 0:30:15Jo's team are still fishing on their first spot.

0:30:15 > 0:30:18- JO:- None of us appear to have been catching anything.

0:30:18 > 0:30:21I've just seen them pull a cod into their boat

0:30:21 > 0:30:23so currently we are losing and I don't like losing.

0:30:23 > 0:30:25The pressure is on.

0:30:25 > 0:30:30It's quite quiet. I thought there would be more action.

0:30:30 > 0:30:32More frenzy. And more fish.

0:30:32 > 0:30:35Maybe it is because there's not a lot of fish

0:30:35 > 0:30:36going on down under right now.

0:30:36 > 0:30:39If nothing is going on, they need to change their tactics.

0:30:39 > 0:30:41And the best way is to move.

0:30:45 > 0:30:48Halfway through and Jo's team have stuck it out long enough.

0:30:48 > 0:30:50We're just bringing the lines up now

0:30:50 > 0:30:52so we can move to a different location.

0:30:52 > 0:30:54But it's quite a long way down

0:30:54 > 0:30:57so we've got quite a bit of spinning to do.

0:30:57 > 0:31:00On the other boat, being constantly on the move

0:31:00 > 0:31:03and jigging by hand is proving a winning combination.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08Get in! Get in there, my son.

0:31:08 > 0:31:09Cracking!

0:31:09 > 0:31:12Whoa! You little beauty!

0:31:12 > 0:31:14Oh, yes, baby! That's a good 'un.

0:31:14 > 0:31:15I have to keep a tight line.

0:31:15 > 0:31:19- Because it will slip the hook. - That's a beauty. Feel the cod.

0:31:21 > 0:31:22No. Missed again.

0:31:22 > 0:31:25Look at that beautiful fish. Wonderful markings.

0:31:25 > 0:31:29They have absolutely no idea how beautiful they were.

0:31:29 > 0:31:31As a team, we're doing, I think, well.

0:31:31 > 0:31:33I don't know how well the other team are doing.

0:31:33 > 0:31:35But we're certainly filling them up now.

0:31:38 > 0:31:40I've lost my lead at the bottom.

0:31:40 > 0:31:43It's a little bit of a pain, having to re-rig.

0:31:43 > 0:31:45Has a sense of disaster right now.

0:31:45 > 0:31:49We've been to one fishing spot, moved to another, lost a rig. No fish.

0:31:49 > 0:31:52- What happens now?- Looks like they are getting a bit anxious.

0:31:52 > 0:31:56I had a word with our captain and he saw some fish going on.

0:31:56 > 0:31:57Come on.

0:31:57 > 0:31:59Ah.

0:31:59 > 0:32:01Tough. Tough.

0:32:01 > 0:32:04It came straight off. It was on, it was off.

0:32:04 > 0:32:06I just felt it, it jumped, and it was definitely a fish.

0:32:06 > 0:32:11I think it's time we moved to a new location, what do you say? Yeah?

0:32:11 > 0:32:14Skipper? New balls, please, as they'd say in Wimbledon.

0:32:16 > 0:32:20Both boats head off for one final push.

0:32:20 > 0:32:22I've got a sweat on. It's hard work pumping that up and down.

0:32:22 > 0:32:24There's still probably about ten minutes left

0:32:24 > 0:32:27so we've just got to keep trying right until the very last second.

0:32:27 > 0:32:30Obviously, we've had nothing, our boxes are empty.

0:32:30 > 0:32:33And we're seeing those guys with fish.

0:32:33 > 0:32:34So it's bit of a problem at the moment,

0:32:34 > 0:32:36the fact that they've got fish and we haven't.

0:32:36 > 0:32:38- OK.- OK?

0:32:38 > 0:32:40You start doubting yourself as a fisherman

0:32:40 > 0:32:43when you're not catching anything. All you can do is keep trying.

0:32:43 > 0:32:47I think with this type of fish, if you catch one, you will catch more.

0:32:47 > 0:32:49We've been working as a complete team,

0:32:49 > 0:32:52from all the plans about how we were going to attack this.

0:32:52 > 0:32:55We believe we're in the lead, but we're not really sure,

0:32:55 > 0:32:59- they could be thinking they are in the lead. So...- JO:- Oh, yes!

0:32:59 > 0:33:01Finally! It took its time today.

0:33:01 > 0:33:06The anticipation and the weight was killing me. But here we go. Finally.

0:33:06 > 0:33:10- Get in.- Yep. Fish.

0:33:10 > 0:33:13I started using it by hand because you can get a feel for the fish.

0:33:13 > 0:33:16- There's another one. - He's got two on.- JO:- Two!

0:33:16 > 0:33:20I'm elated with that, really pleased with that.

0:33:20 > 0:33:22Whoo!

0:33:22 > 0:33:24Come on. King of the cod.

0:33:26 > 0:33:29I think we must have drifted over a cod area.

0:33:29 > 0:33:32We've all had some fish come on board just now. So...

0:33:32 > 0:33:34You never know, we might get a few more.

0:33:34 > 0:33:36- I'm on.- You're on? Wait. - Last minute.

0:33:36 > 0:33:38- Gone.- Gone?

0:33:38 > 0:33:39- RIPON:- My shoulders are burning.

0:33:41 > 0:33:43This lead weight at the bottom has smashed me to pieces.

0:33:43 > 0:33:45Time's up.

0:33:45 > 0:33:47Lines out of the water, please.

0:33:47 > 0:33:50OK, everybody, that's it, lines out of the water.

0:33:54 > 0:33:55How many did we get?

0:34:08 > 0:34:12At the end of the week, individual performances will count

0:34:12 > 0:34:16when Matt and Vala decide who makes it through.

0:34:16 > 0:34:19But, for now, the winners of today's task

0:34:19 > 0:34:22will be the team who has brought home the heaviest haul.

0:34:22 > 0:34:25- Vala, we were watching Jo's team. - Yeah.

0:34:25 > 0:34:28I'm pretty happy seeing the team working so well together.

0:34:28 > 0:34:31Sam, you were pretty good with the knots, showing the team.

0:34:31 > 0:34:33You all went first with the red lure.

0:34:33 > 0:34:35Maybe it would have been a better strategy

0:34:35 > 0:34:38putting different colours in the first

0:34:38 > 0:34:40to see which one works the best.

0:34:40 > 0:34:43Matt, what about the team that you were on the boat with?

0:34:43 > 0:34:46Phil, you innovated by working out very quickly

0:34:46 > 0:34:50that hand lining the equipment, rather than relying on the winches,

0:34:50 > 0:34:53was a winning tactic. That was impressive.

0:34:53 > 0:34:56But the truth is in the fish boxes.

0:34:56 > 0:35:00Jo's team caught, today, just under 20 kilos.

0:35:00 > 0:35:03Which leaves us, Matt, with the other team.

0:35:05 > 0:35:07Who caught just over 34 kilos.

0:35:07 > 0:35:11- Wow.- Very good.- Well done. - OTHER TEAM APPLAUD

0:35:11 > 0:35:15That makes you our winners today. Congratulations.

0:35:16 > 0:35:18- I'm starving.- Yeah, so are we.

0:35:18 > 0:35:20Well done.

0:35:20 > 0:35:23You guys floored us!

0:35:23 > 0:35:26We did our best. I think we put in a sterling performance all round.

0:35:26 > 0:35:30- We all worked those winches good and proper.- Well done, boys.

0:35:30 > 0:35:32They thought that they were the youngsters

0:35:32 > 0:35:35and they were going to whip us, but not today.

0:35:35 > 0:35:38Experience showed today. We were all proud of that.

0:35:38 > 0:35:41'Halfway through the Icelandic part of the expedition

0:35:41 > 0:35:44'and the anglers enjoy a traditional meal in the village.'

0:35:44 > 0:35:46- Fantastic.- Wow.

0:35:46 > 0:35:47- WAITER:- That is cod.

0:35:47 > 0:35:50- It smells amazing.- Do you want some of this, mate?- Go on then.- Lovely.

0:35:50 > 0:35:52That will do, bud.

0:35:52 > 0:35:54'Tomorrow, they will be leaving the coast

0:35:54 > 0:35:57'and the tough world of sea fishing behind.'

0:35:57 > 0:35:58Oh, God, that's good.

0:35:58 > 0:36:01I'll go so far as to say that's the best piece of cod I've ever eaten.

0:36:01 > 0:36:03You know the fish hasn't travelled far, that's for sure.

0:36:03 > 0:36:07That's amazing. So, yeah, top marks there.

0:36:12 > 0:36:16SEAGULLS CRY

0:36:16 > 0:36:18For the second half of their week in Iceland,

0:36:18 > 0:36:20the anglers are travelling inland.

0:36:22 > 0:36:26300 miles south to its biggest freshwater lake,

0:36:26 > 0:36:29home to one of the country's magnificent fish,

0:36:29 > 0:36:32the Icelandic lake trout.

0:36:32 > 0:36:35The judges have set the anglers their hardest challenge yet,

0:36:35 > 0:36:39to master the most technically difficult of any kind of angling -

0:36:39 > 0:36:41flyfishing.

0:36:41 > 0:36:45I love flyfishing. I feel very, very confident with this

0:36:45 > 0:36:49because it isn't far off what we do in Great Britain.

0:36:49 > 0:36:51But the 40mph winds

0:36:51 > 0:36:55and driving rain is making visibility terrible.

0:36:55 > 0:36:57Fishing in this weather is not going to be easy.

0:36:57 > 0:37:00Theoretically, I should be fairly comfortable

0:37:00 > 0:37:03in this method of fishing, I do a lot of flyfishing at home,

0:37:03 > 0:37:06but I've never really fly fished in conditions like this, ever.

0:37:17 > 0:37:20Most of the anglers have flyfishing experience.

0:37:20 > 0:37:22Dan and Ripon are novices.

0:37:22 > 0:37:25I've only been flyfishing for about three months.

0:37:25 > 0:37:26I can cast from a fly rod,

0:37:26 > 0:37:29but in these conditions, it could go anywhere.

0:37:29 > 0:37:32Fly fishing is not a strong point of mine.

0:37:32 > 0:37:35I can cast when it's nice weather.

0:37:35 > 0:37:38This wind is not going to be helping me at all.

0:37:39 > 0:37:42The elements are certainly against us today, but I can tell you

0:37:42 > 0:37:45they are in the favour of the fish that live in this lake.

0:37:45 > 0:37:49And this geothermal activity, the volcanic activity, have created

0:37:49 > 0:37:54the largest brown trout on the planet. This is Vala's home turf.

0:37:54 > 0:37:57She is going to be watching you like a hawk.

0:37:57 > 0:37:59It's not just about the fish you catch

0:37:59 > 0:38:02or the fish you don't catch, it's about your technique,

0:38:02 > 0:38:06it's about how you approach this next part of the expedition.

0:38:06 > 0:38:10This is your last chance to shine. After this, one of you is going home.

0:38:10 > 0:38:13- Go, fish!- All right.- Let's do it. Thanks very much.

0:38:21 > 0:38:24- Let's go fishing. - Let's go fishing.

0:38:24 > 0:38:25Here we go.

0:38:25 > 0:38:29This lake is over 30 square miles of glacial water

0:38:29 > 0:38:32filtered through black volcanic rocks.

0:38:32 > 0:38:33I'm sticking with you, mate.

0:38:33 > 0:38:37The fish might not be far out, you know.

0:38:37 > 0:38:40The weather, the wind, it's not easy fishing at all.

0:38:40 > 0:38:42We didn't expect the challenges to be easy

0:38:42 > 0:38:45but this one is very extreme.

0:38:45 > 0:38:48They've got nine hours to catch the biggest trout they can,

0:38:48 > 0:38:52giving the judges plenty of time to watch their technique,

0:38:52 > 0:38:55casting the flies that give this style of fishing its name.

0:38:55 > 0:38:59What I've got on is a little black thingamyjig.

0:38:59 > 0:39:01It just looks really good fun.

0:39:01 > 0:39:03Flies, like lures, attract the fish

0:39:03 > 0:39:07and come in a huge range of size, shape, and colour.

0:39:07 > 0:39:10To mimic anything from a tiny insect to a small fish.

0:39:10 > 0:39:12What you're trying to do with these flies

0:39:12 > 0:39:15is imitate something that the fish might feed on.

0:39:15 > 0:39:18When they're out the water, they look like nothing you've ever seen

0:39:18 > 0:39:20but when it's moving through the water,

0:39:20 > 0:39:23it's like a fish. They look a lot different when they are wet.

0:39:23 > 0:39:25Until you find what they're taking a feed on,

0:39:25 > 0:39:26you should chop and change.

0:39:26 > 0:39:29So, we'll give this one a go and see what happens.

0:39:35 > 0:39:39The basic equipment for flyfishing is a long, thin rod, a reel,

0:39:39 > 0:39:42and a tapered line.

0:39:42 > 0:39:45The fly is attached to the end, but unlike their sea fishing,

0:39:45 > 0:39:47no weight is added.

0:39:47 > 0:39:49The skill in flyfishing comes from

0:39:49 > 0:39:51whipping the rod backwards and forwards

0:39:51 > 0:39:53so the weight of the line itself

0:39:53 > 0:39:55propels the fly across the water.

0:39:55 > 0:39:57The object of the exercise, really,

0:39:57 > 0:40:00is to get the fly as close to the fish as they can

0:40:00 > 0:40:01in these conditions.

0:40:01 > 0:40:03Where is the fish? How do you know?

0:40:03 > 0:40:05Well, this is where they've got to use a little bit of intuition.

0:40:05 > 0:40:08I really want to see them moving around.

0:40:08 > 0:40:10If there's nothing going on,

0:40:10 > 0:40:13change the fly, don't be standing for two hours at the same spot

0:40:13 > 0:40:14because nothing is going to happen.

0:40:14 > 0:40:19Choosing where to fish is going to be key to their success today.

0:40:19 > 0:40:22They are free to pick their fishing spot

0:40:22 > 0:40:25and then decide if and when to move.

0:40:25 > 0:40:27I've chosen this spot because I believe

0:40:27 > 0:40:31this is a geothermal sink hole here, pumping warm water in.

0:40:31 > 0:40:34So, this is going to be a warm spot in the lake and hopefully

0:40:34 > 0:40:37it's a case of sitting tight and waiting for the fish to move through.

0:40:37 > 0:40:40If I get the fly choice right, there's every chance of hooking up.

0:40:40 > 0:40:44There's nothing like the thrill of hooking a decent fish on a fly rod.

0:40:44 > 0:40:45It's just you and the fish,

0:40:45 > 0:40:49nothing else on the line to get in the way, nothing else to cause drag.

0:40:49 > 0:40:51It's just a man against fish with the fly rod.

0:40:51 > 0:40:55I'm going to start here because the way this wind is gusting,

0:40:55 > 0:40:57if you can get the line in the air,

0:40:57 > 0:40:59the wind will put the line out for you.

0:40:59 > 0:41:03Fly-fishing is just fun. It's one of those things that I like doing.

0:41:05 > 0:41:07Aah! Let's get this loop out.

0:41:07 > 0:41:11The wind has caught it and wrapped it around the rod tip.

0:41:11 > 0:41:13HE SIGHS IN EXASPERATION

0:41:13 > 0:41:15Aah!

0:41:15 > 0:41:17This is the biggest nightmare going.

0:41:17 > 0:41:21I would love to catch one of these big old trout, and I expect to.

0:41:23 > 0:41:25Brown trout are found all over the world

0:41:25 > 0:41:28but the ones here are exceptional.

0:41:28 > 0:41:30They're huge, voracious, lake trout,

0:41:30 > 0:41:33the biggest and feistiest in Iceland.

0:41:33 > 0:41:35I've seen the pictures.

0:41:35 > 0:41:37They're seriously prehistoric looking,

0:41:37 > 0:41:39incredibly beautiful creatures.

0:41:39 > 0:41:42And, by all accounts, they don't half go some as well

0:41:42 > 0:41:44so that will be another one to tick off the bucket list.

0:41:48 > 0:41:51Two hours gone and no fish so far.

0:41:51 > 0:41:53The weather is changing.

0:41:54 > 0:41:57Although a drop in wind will make casting easier,

0:41:57 > 0:42:00it could cause the anglers different problems.

0:42:00 > 0:42:02I've just had to get out of the water because obviously

0:42:02 > 0:42:05with the wind dropping, it's causing too much disturbance for the fish.

0:42:05 > 0:42:08Trout have extremely sharp eyesight.

0:42:08 > 0:42:11If you can see them, they can see you.

0:42:11 > 0:42:12The water is so clear,

0:42:12 > 0:42:15any disturbance will put the fish off completely.

0:42:15 > 0:42:17There's the fish out there.

0:42:23 > 0:42:25- Fish on!- Fish on!

0:42:25 > 0:42:29I'm just trying to keep tension on the line.

0:42:29 > 0:42:31Whoa, whoa. Whoa.

0:42:32 > 0:42:35Hey, they're hell of a fighters here, mind.

0:42:38 > 0:42:41Get in! Yes! Yes! Eventually!

0:42:41 > 0:42:43- Why-aye, man!- Get on!

0:42:43 > 0:42:46That's probably the nicest fish I've ever seen in my life.

0:42:46 > 0:42:49Probably the most important one. I can't believe it.

0:42:49 > 0:42:51It's going back. That was amazing.

0:42:51 > 0:42:53Probably one of the hardest fighting fish,

0:42:53 > 0:42:55for its size, I've ever caught.

0:42:55 > 0:42:57With James the only angler off the mark,

0:42:57 > 0:43:00everyone will want to know how he did it.

0:43:00 > 0:43:02I changed lures

0:43:02 > 0:43:05so it's more of a natural pattern in these big gory lures.

0:43:05 > 0:43:08Hello, you jammy Geordie. What was the technique?

0:43:08 > 0:43:09What was the technique?

0:43:09 > 0:43:12- Turn your box over.- It was...

0:43:12 > 0:43:16- Yep. It was one of them.- OK. Thank you very much, sir.- Any time, mate.

0:43:16 > 0:43:19Phil spotted what I was using and he's actually changing to one now.

0:43:19 > 0:43:21So, everyone is just changing the setup.

0:43:21 > 0:43:24I've done the hard work and the rest reap the benefits.

0:43:24 > 0:43:27But there's definitely more fish to be caught.

0:43:27 > 0:43:31Success in flyfishing depends on choosing the fly that looks

0:43:31 > 0:43:34most like what the fish are eating on any given day.

0:43:34 > 0:43:36It's a matter of trial and error.

0:43:36 > 0:43:37Yo!

0:43:37 > 0:43:40Or taking inspiration from someone more successful.

0:43:40 > 0:43:43I let the young Geordie boy get the first fish

0:43:43 > 0:43:46but I knew it wouldn't be long before I had one myself.

0:43:46 > 0:43:48What a jammy sod he is!

0:43:48 > 0:43:49Fish on.

0:43:49 > 0:43:52It looks like Dan has caught one as well.

0:43:52 > 0:43:54To me, it's the best feeling in the world.

0:43:54 > 0:43:56Aaaah!

0:43:56 > 0:43:58I'm going to learn, it's a competition.

0:43:58 > 0:44:02Beautiful little fish. It's a great fly for such a tiny little fish

0:44:02 > 0:44:04but let's get him back in the water now.

0:44:04 > 0:44:06Off to fight another day.

0:44:07 > 0:44:10- Congratulations, Dan, how does it feel?- I'm chuffed.

0:44:10 > 0:44:12I'm really over the moon.

0:44:12 > 0:44:15I spoke to James after he caught his fish.

0:44:15 > 0:44:17- You're all sharing information? - Yeah, yeah.

0:44:17 > 0:44:18I'm not a fly-fisherman

0:44:18 > 0:44:20and I won't start to say that I'm a fly-fisherman.

0:44:20 > 0:44:24- But I've just been and caught a fish so I think...- You did!

0:44:24 > 0:44:25- Sooner than some other people.- Yes.

0:44:25 > 0:44:28So maybe I am a little bit of a fly-fisherman.

0:44:28 > 0:44:29Yeah. I think you are.

0:44:33 > 0:44:36Halfway through the challenge to land the biggest trout,

0:44:36 > 0:44:41and so far, only James, Phil and Dan have caught.

0:44:41 > 0:44:44A happy fisherman is a fisherman who is catching fish.

0:44:44 > 0:44:47So there's probably going to be a few unhappy people here today.

0:44:49 > 0:44:51Ooh!

0:44:51 > 0:44:52That was pants.

0:44:52 > 0:44:56Casting the line is the skill in fly-fishing that takes practice.

0:44:56 > 0:45:00If you can't get the fly out to the fish, you won't catch them.

0:45:00 > 0:45:02Now the wind's died down, it should be a bit easier

0:45:02 > 0:45:03but I'm still not managing

0:45:03 > 0:45:05to get out as far as I'd like it to get out.

0:45:05 > 0:45:09Repeatedly flicking the fly rod backwards and forwards

0:45:09 > 0:45:13between 11 and one o'clock lets you pay out line.

0:45:13 > 0:45:14At exactly the right moment,

0:45:14 > 0:45:18the line is released to send the fly out to the chosen spot.

0:45:18 > 0:45:22Start with a rod pointing at the water, a smooth lift,

0:45:22 > 0:45:24pause, forward.

0:45:24 > 0:45:28It's literally like tapping a nail into a piece of wood.

0:45:28 > 0:45:31- I like this. - A little bit of a pause.

0:45:31 > 0:45:33- Look, I can do it while I'm looking at you.- Yeah.

0:45:33 > 0:45:36And the trick is not to actually fight the wind

0:45:36 > 0:45:38because it's behind you, it's to work with it.

0:45:38 > 0:45:40- And in actual fact... - Whoa! I think I caught myself.

0:45:40 > 0:45:43You did, you did. Actually, you did.

0:45:43 > 0:45:45BEN LAUGHS

0:45:45 > 0:45:46It's a whopper!

0:45:49 > 0:45:52I tell you what, I'm impressed with Ripon's casting,

0:45:52 > 0:45:54seeing as he's never used a fly rod before.

0:45:54 > 0:45:56Ripon, casting is good, mate.

0:45:56 > 0:45:57Thank you.

0:45:57 > 0:45:59My fishing is more coarse angling.

0:45:59 > 0:46:01Just the whole setup is totally different

0:46:01 > 0:46:04but I've been teaching myself after the last three months,

0:46:04 > 0:46:08just casting out in the garden and out on the road and stuff like that.

0:46:09 > 0:46:13Geoff first learn to fly-fish over 30 years ago.

0:46:13 > 0:46:15I'm making splashes all over the bloody place

0:46:15 > 0:46:19because my casting style is very messy and very rough.

0:46:23 > 0:46:26Oh, look at this. Not good, is it?

0:46:26 > 0:46:30Well, Geoffrey, I think it's safe for me to take my glasses off.

0:46:30 > 0:46:33- Now your line's out of the water. - Mm-hm.- How's it going?

0:46:33 > 0:46:35OK, I'm losing a few flies, though,

0:46:35 > 0:46:38- I'm damaging a few flies. - I saw that.

0:46:38 > 0:46:39You've got some rocks behind you.

0:46:39 > 0:46:43Partially down to me and my casting which has never been brilliant.

0:46:44 > 0:46:47As neither Geoff nor Ripon have landed a trout so far,

0:46:47 > 0:46:51looking for a new spot to fish could be the answer.

0:46:51 > 0:46:54I am tempted to move, I was thinking down there,

0:46:54 > 0:46:57but it looks like Jo and Dan are still there. It's etiquette

0:46:57 > 0:47:00to kind of, you know, see if there's a space that's clear.

0:47:00 > 0:47:03I know it's a competition, but it's just fishing etiquette.

0:47:03 > 0:47:04Some people have come a bit close

0:47:04 > 0:47:06but it depends on someone's judgement, really.

0:47:06 > 0:47:09- EMMA:- # Dee-dee... #

0:47:10 > 0:47:12Um...

0:47:12 > 0:47:15Geoff, do you want me to move or something?

0:47:15 > 0:47:19- I thought you were walking down the bank. - Geoff, I'm just fishing this bit.

0:47:19 > 0:47:21In front of you, there's a fish that keeps topping.

0:47:21 > 0:47:24The thing is, I don't want to go down here and fish down here

0:47:24 > 0:47:26if I'm going to get in your way.

0:47:26 > 0:47:29I tell you what, you fish here, and I'll go somewhere else.

0:47:29 > 0:47:30HE LAUGHS

0:47:30 > 0:47:34Geoff, I have a bit of a thing about manners...

0:47:34 > 0:47:37- I don't want to be in your way. - No, but come on.

0:47:37 > 0:47:38Just fish it.

0:47:38 > 0:47:41I'm just going to go and calm down for a minute

0:47:41 > 0:47:43because I am quite cross.

0:47:43 > 0:47:44SHE SIGHS

0:47:44 > 0:47:46OK. Calm down.

0:47:46 > 0:47:49Who cares?

0:47:50 > 0:47:52SHE SNIFFS

0:47:52 > 0:47:54We had a misunderstanding.

0:47:54 > 0:47:58I will speak to her later on and try and explain what happened.

0:47:58 > 0:48:01And, er...try and straighten things out with her

0:48:01 > 0:48:03because I think she is a lovely, lovely person.

0:48:03 > 0:48:07One of the nicest people I've met, actually.

0:48:07 > 0:48:09As Emma begins fishing further up the beach,

0:48:09 > 0:48:14Sam is also changing position, after sticking to the same spot all day.

0:48:14 > 0:48:15I'm going to move on to the beach

0:48:15 > 0:48:18because they seem to be catching a few on the beach.

0:48:18 > 0:48:20It's got to be on, doesn't it? Can't ignore the signs.

0:48:20 > 0:48:23But it's not just the fishing spot he's changing.

0:48:23 > 0:48:26I'm going for a bait fish imitation pattern.

0:48:26 > 0:48:29I'm kind of working on the principle of big fly, big fish.

0:48:36 > 0:48:38Fish on!

0:48:38 > 0:48:41This looks like a good fish. Look at that.

0:48:41 > 0:48:44Ooh, I had a bit of a tug, then.

0:48:44 > 0:48:45Yes.

0:48:45 > 0:48:47Come on, my beauty.

0:48:47 > 0:48:49I've been waiting all day for this moment.

0:48:49 > 0:48:51I see little beasties.

0:48:51 > 0:48:54Wow. Come on, boy.

0:48:55 > 0:48:59- It's powerful. - Look at that. That is stunning.,

0:48:59 > 0:49:03God, they're so silvery. Really nice little fish.

0:49:03 > 0:49:05Yes! In the net!

0:49:05 > 0:49:08Big stream of fly, big fish.

0:49:08 > 0:49:10Emma, you have such a big smile on your face.

0:49:10 > 0:49:13You know, I'm so, so pleased.

0:49:13 > 0:49:15Poor fish has been tormented by kisses.

0:49:15 > 0:49:18But I'm really excited.

0:49:18 > 0:49:20That is beautiful.

0:49:20 > 0:49:23That is what you come to Iceland for.

0:49:23 > 0:49:24Bye-bye.

0:49:24 > 0:49:26My heart is still pounding.

0:49:26 > 0:49:30I'm just like a quivering mess.. Absolutely fantastic.

0:49:30 > 0:49:32That is why I go fishing.

0:49:33 > 0:49:36When they started, they were very, very grouped up.

0:49:36 > 0:49:39It was almost as if someone had poured lead into their waders.

0:49:39 > 0:49:42It was actually when they began to use the space

0:49:42 > 0:49:46- that it worked for them.- I think they really took James's lead.

0:49:46 > 0:49:49He was the one who was constantly moving in the beginning

0:49:49 > 0:49:51and he got his reward. He caught the first one.

0:49:51 > 0:49:54If you take Sam, he was rooted to the same spot.

0:49:54 > 0:49:56He claimed this little peninsular like it was his little kingdom

0:49:56 > 0:49:58and he was going to fish it.

0:49:58 > 0:50:02It's only when he moved out of that space that he actually caught fish.

0:50:02 > 0:50:04And Emma, she found a nice little corner

0:50:04 > 0:50:06and bingo, she gets fish.

0:50:06 > 0:50:09Jo's experienced at fly-fishing,

0:50:09 > 0:50:11but she's had no luck so far.

0:50:13 > 0:50:15- SHE SIGHS - No, I haven't seen any fish.

0:50:15 > 0:50:18I haven't seen any fish rising, I haven't seen any fish swimming.

0:50:18 > 0:50:21But there are fish in here because the lads have been catching them.

0:50:21 > 0:50:24I'm going to feel a bit disheartened.

0:50:24 > 0:50:26- Hey, Jo.- Hi, Ben. How are you going?

0:50:26 > 0:50:28- How are you?- Yes, it's been a bit of a frustrating day.

0:50:28 > 0:50:31What has been your strategy so far? Have you been staying in one place?

0:50:31 > 0:50:34- Have you been moving?- Well, no, I've been moving about a bit.

0:50:34 > 0:50:36I've just come over here so I'll give this spot a go.

0:50:36 > 0:50:38That wasn't very good cast either.

0:50:38 > 0:50:42- You're being really critical of yourself.- Yes, I always am.

0:50:50 > 0:50:54Just half an hour left to catch the biggest trout.

0:50:54 > 0:50:56What did you think of their casting, generally?

0:50:56 > 0:50:58They are all very different from each other.

0:50:58 > 0:51:01James is one of the best ones, casting.

0:51:01 > 0:51:05I've seen Geoff just hitting the sand back a lot.

0:51:05 > 0:51:07I don't know if the fly is still on. I hope.

0:51:07 > 0:51:11Do you know who I think is the most improved caster today?

0:51:11 > 0:51:12Ripon.

0:51:12 > 0:51:15He is the least experienced fly-fisher in the group.

0:51:15 > 0:51:18He is the most improved caster today.

0:51:18 > 0:51:21- RIPON:- At the moment, my body is just obliterated.

0:51:21 > 0:51:24I'd love to stay on but at the rate I'm going, I don't think I will be.

0:51:24 > 0:51:27Just going to keep fishing. If I worry about the time,

0:51:27 > 0:51:30then that's just something else to worry about.

0:51:30 > 0:51:32- JO:- I don't normally get this frustrated.

0:51:32 > 0:51:35I think it's just down to the fact that the pressure is on.

0:51:37 > 0:51:40- SAM:- It would be nice to get another one.

0:51:42 > 0:51:44- EMMA:- Come on. I know there's a fish here.

0:51:44 > 0:51:47It would be absolutely fantastic

0:51:47 > 0:51:49if somebody caught one at this 11th hour.

0:51:49 > 0:51:52- DAN:- Big, big, big fish out there.

0:51:52 > 0:51:55I just saw his head come out of the water. There's loads of them.

0:51:55 > 0:51:56Because I haven't caught yet,

0:51:56 > 0:52:00the likelihood of going home is fast approaching, really.

0:52:00 > 0:52:02Get out there. Not much time left.

0:52:02 > 0:52:04I'm starting to ache as well.

0:52:04 > 0:52:09We're all really fishing now to catch a bigger fish than Sam caught

0:52:09 > 0:52:11cos that was a lovely fish that Sam caught.

0:52:16 > 0:52:18(Fish, come on. Fish.)

0:52:18 > 0:52:20- JO:- Just know I can do better than this

0:52:20 > 0:52:23so I'm a bit frustrated with myself, really.

0:52:23 > 0:52:27That's it, anglers, your time is up!

0:52:27 > 0:52:29Please bring your lines in.

0:52:30 > 0:52:32No fish.

0:52:32 > 0:52:36I'm not disappointed in the fact that... Well, I am disappointed

0:52:36 > 0:52:40there were no fish on my rod. I just hope I've done enough.

0:52:52 > 0:52:57Total respect to all of you for coping with horrendous conditions

0:52:57 > 0:53:01at times. It tested you, but some of you came out on top.

0:53:01 > 0:53:03- Well done.- I liked your casting.

0:53:03 > 0:53:07Some of you were obviously doing it for a long time before.

0:53:07 > 0:53:10But, for others, it was a new thing.

0:53:10 > 0:53:12I wish you had moved more throughout the lake.

0:53:12 > 0:53:16- Some of you did. But I'm happy.- This challenge was about the largest fish.

0:53:16 > 0:53:21So, the winner of this part of the competition

0:53:21 > 0:53:25with a brown trout weighing five pounds, nine ounces,

0:53:25 > 0:53:27was Sam. Congratulations, Sam.

0:53:27 > 0:53:30- Thank you very much.- Well done. - Cheers, guys.- How do you feel?

0:53:30 > 0:53:33Over the moon. It was a fantastic fish. It made my day.

0:53:33 > 0:53:37Well, well done again. As you all know, part of fishing is about luck.

0:53:37 > 0:53:41The judges were analysing your technique, your style, all of those things.

0:53:41 > 0:53:46So, we are now going to retire to debate who is going home.

0:53:46 > 0:53:49Enjoy your last few hours of Iceland.

0:53:59 > 0:54:01You guys have a really tough decision.

0:54:01 > 0:54:04You've got three very distinct different tests.

0:54:04 > 0:54:08So, are you going to base this purely on statistics, the most fish,

0:54:08 > 0:54:11the biggest fish, the greatest number of species?

0:54:11 > 0:54:15- No.- There's so much more to fishing than going plus and plus and plus.

0:54:15 > 0:54:17You've got different styles of fishing,

0:54:17 > 0:54:20you've got the fly-fishing compared to bait fishing

0:54:20 > 0:54:24and fly-fishing is much more thought put into it, technique-wise.

0:54:24 > 0:54:25- I agree with you.- Yeah.

0:54:25 > 0:54:27The third challenge was pretty tough

0:54:27 > 0:54:30so I do think we do have to use some judgement.

0:54:30 > 0:54:32I don't think we can just go on numbers.

0:54:32 > 0:54:35James had been pretty solid throughout the competition.

0:54:35 > 0:54:39- I feel he is confident in himself. - And Dan has done incredibly well.

0:54:39 > 0:54:42I think he's got great fishing instincts. I think he's done well.

0:54:42 > 0:54:44And then of course, we've got Sam.

0:54:44 > 0:54:47In the trout fishing, he stayed in one place

0:54:47 > 0:54:49for a very, very long period of time.

0:54:49 > 0:54:51And only when others began to make things happen

0:54:51 > 0:54:54- did he actually follow suit. - And then, of course, you've got Emma.

0:54:54 > 0:54:57She really stuffed her game up with fly-fishing.

0:54:57 > 0:55:00There's so much technique and thought that you have to put into it

0:55:00 > 0:55:04- so I think she really went up. - And we've got Phil out there.

0:55:04 > 0:55:08I think he's steady, not amazing, but he's had decent results.

0:55:08 > 0:55:10- And then we've got Geoff. - In the first challenge

0:55:10 > 0:55:12when he caught that scorpion fish...

0:55:12 > 0:55:15It is pretty hard to catch, actually. That's not a common fish.

0:55:15 > 0:55:18He started to come unravelled a bit when he came to the fly-fishing.

0:55:18 > 0:55:22The problems with the casting, losing the points on his flies,

0:55:22 > 0:55:25wrecking the flies. It wasn't so good.

0:55:25 > 0:55:28He could improve his technique with the fly casting.

0:55:28 > 0:55:32His back cast was throwing a lot in the sand in the back area

0:55:32 > 0:55:35which is definitely not good, I feel.

0:55:35 > 0:55:38I think, in the case of the first challenge,

0:55:38 > 0:55:43Jo did show some flashes. We both agree on that.

0:55:43 > 0:55:46But there could be a bit of luck in there.
