0:00:03 > 0:00:05The Earth's wildest oceans...
0:00:06 > 0:00:08lakes... and rivers
0:00:09 > 0:00:11are home to some fascinating fish.
0:00:15 > 0:00:17Eight anglers embark on a global adventure...
0:00:17 > 0:00:20You've taken the Welshman out of his comfort zone out here,
0:00:20 > 0:00:22haven't you? This place is nuts.
0:00:22 > 0:00:26..in which they'll compete in every kind of environment.
0:00:26 > 0:00:30- I've never really fly fished in conditions like this, ever.- Orcas!
0:00:32 > 0:00:36It will test everything they know about fishing...and themselves.
0:00:36 > 0:00:39Everyone's tried absolutely everything.
0:00:39 > 0:00:42All you've got to do is keep persevering.
0:00:42 > 0:00:45They'll be watched by international expert Matt Hayes,
0:00:45 > 0:00:48and some of the best fisherman
0:00:48 > 0:00:52from around the world, who'll judge who stays on the next location...
0:00:52 > 0:00:56in some of the most epic places to fish on earth.
0:00:56 > 0:00:59That has made my day.
0:00:59 > 0:01:03Last time, the anglers explored the wildlife
0:01:03 > 0:01:06on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
0:01:06 > 0:01:08Dolphins, dolphins, dolphins! Look, look, look!
0:01:08 > 0:01:11James, Dan, and Ripon struggled.
0:01:11 > 0:01:14So annoying!
0:01:14 > 0:01:18But Dan's last-minute catch kept his place secure.
0:01:18 > 0:01:20My best fishing moment by far.
0:01:20 > 0:01:23And it was Ripon's time to leave the expedition.
0:01:25 > 0:01:27This time, everything is super-sized...
0:01:27 > 0:01:30Hit it! Hit it! Hit it! Lift up!
0:01:31 > 0:01:33As the four semifinalists...
0:01:33 > 0:01:37- Come on!- That is an absolutely magnificent creature.
0:01:37 > 0:01:40..put their heart and soul into fishing...
0:01:40 > 0:01:43- I'm exhausted! - ..in Canada.
0:01:43 > 0:01:46I've seen big fish before, but nothing like this.
0:01:56 > 0:01:59British Columbia, on the west coast of Canada.
0:02:03 > 0:02:06Everything is on an enormous scale.
0:02:06 > 0:02:09And the whole ecosystem is driven by fish.
0:02:14 > 0:02:17Salmon feeding at sea return to the rivers they were born in
0:02:17 > 0:02:18to spawn.
0:02:20 > 0:02:24This circle of life has literally fed the forest over millions of years
0:02:24 > 0:02:28and given birth to one of the richest habitats on earth.
0:02:28 > 0:02:30It's an incredible place.
0:02:30 > 0:02:31If you don't want to fish here,
0:02:31 > 0:02:34you're not a true fisherman.
0:02:34 > 0:02:36There's huge pressure on all of the anglers.
0:02:36 > 0:02:40They're now getting to the final stages of the competition.
0:02:40 > 0:02:43It is very high stakes this week.
0:02:43 > 0:02:48For the semifinal, Matt will be joined by fishing expert Yves Bisson.
0:02:48 > 0:02:52He's fished all around British Columbia's coast
0:02:52 > 0:02:54and inland waterways.
0:02:54 > 0:02:58Fishing in BC is amazing. It's the best in the world, in my opinion.
0:02:58 > 0:03:02The mountains are bigger, the water is bigger,
0:03:02 > 0:03:04the rivers are bigger and the fish are bigger.
0:03:04 > 0:03:06So many different varieties of fishing.
0:03:06 > 0:03:09Anything could be thrown at us this week.
0:03:09 > 0:03:12The anglers have just one more journey of their own
0:03:12 > 0:03:14if they are going to make it to the final.
0:03:14 > 0:03:18No-one wants to go home. I'm scared to bits, nervous.
0:03:18 > 0:03:20I need to take the gifts that this country is going to give us
0:03:20 > 0:03:23and hopefully one of those will be a big fish for me.
0:03:23 > 0:03:24We'll wait and see.
0:03:27 > 0:03:30- Morning.- Morning. - Welcome to the semifinal.
0:03:30 > 0:03:33Congratulations, all of you, in getting this far.
0:03:33 > 0:03:36This is an extraordinary place for fish.
0:03:36 > 0:03:39And you're after a fish sometimes known as the King Salmon -
0:03:39 > 0:03:41the Chinook.
0:03:41 > 0:03:43The biggest of the five Pacific salmon
0:03:43 > 0:03:45that we have migrating through these waters.
0:03:45 > 0:03:47It's an exciting fish, so good luck.
0:03:47 > 0:03:49This is totally unlike any salmon fishing
0:03:49 > 0:03:51that any of you have done before.
0:03:51 > 0:03:54For a start off, you're fishing for salmon at sea.
0:03:54 > 0:03:58But you'll also be using a very specialised technique
0:03:58 > 0:03:59called downrigging.
0:03:59 > 0:04:03It's totally unlike anything else in the world of fishing
0:04:03 > 0:04:06and you've got to get to grips with it in double-quick time.
0:04:06 > 0:04:08The winner is the angler to catch
0:04:08 > 0:04:09the greatest combined length of salmon.
0:04:09 > 0:04:13So the more fish you catch, the greater your chances are of winning.
0:04:13 > 0:04:16As always, our judges are going to be watching you for technique, style,
0:04:16 > 0:04:19how you handle the fish. Ready for this one?
0:04:19 > 0:04:21- Yes.- Always. - Go fish, guys.
0:04:21 > 0:04:23- And good luck.- Good luck.
0:04:23 > 0:04:25Cheers, guys.
0:04:30 > 0:04:33The semifinalists will have just five hours to catch and release
0:04:33 > 0:04:36as many salmon as they can.
0:04:36 > 0:04:38Very nice to meet you. OK. Thank you so much.
0:04:38 > 0:04:39This is my type of...
0:04:39 > 0:04:42I'm a salmon fisherman back home.
0:04:42 > 0:04:44Nothing like this, mind. It's completely different.
0:04:44 > 0:04:46It's all freshwater, so we'll see how we get on.
0:04:46 > 0:04:50- All right. Let's do this! - Lovely, lovely. Let's go fishing.
0:04:50 > 0:04:53No-one's wishing anyone good luck.
0:04:53 > 0:04:54Stuff them!
0:04:54 > 0:04:58British Columbia, on the Pacific Coast of Canada,
0:04:58 > 0:05:02has thousands of islands, and the biggest of them all
0:05:02 > 0:05:03is Vancouver Island,
0:05:03 > 0:05:08around which the anglers will be searching for the chinook.
0:05:08 > 0:05:11The key to this challenge will be using the equipment
0:05:11 > 0:05:13to find the fish in these deep waters.
0:05:14 > 0:05:16I've caught salmon with a coracle before
0:05:16 > 0:05:17but if I catch a salmon today,
0:05:17 > 0:05:20it's going to be my first salmon with rod and line,
0:05:20 > 0:05:22so there's another first to tick off the list.
0:05:22 > 0:05:25Chinook salmon migrate in huge shoals,
0:05:25 > 0:05:30from the Pacific Ocean far upriver to where they were born.
0:05:31 > 0:05:34Once in fresh water, they won't eat at all,
0:05:34 > 0:05:38but here in the sea, they're aggressively feeding
0:05:38 > 0:05:41before their big journey, making them easier to catch.
0:05:41 > 0:05:45IF the anglers can get to grips with the equipment.
0:05:45 > 0:05:46You've got he downriggers.
0:05:46 > 0:05:49So this is all totally new and alien to me.
0:05:49 > 0:05:52It looks like you need a degree to use this thing here.
0:05:52 > 0:05:55The downriggers take a heavy cannonball,
0:05:55 > 0:05:59clipped to the bait, down to the depth that the fish are feeding.
0:05:59 > 0:06:03This causes a massive bend in the rod, if the line is kept tight.
0:06:03 > 0:06:06The bait is attached to a colourful piece of plastic
0:06:06 > 0:06:10called a flasher, which spins as it's trolled to attract
0:06:10 > 0:06:14the fish to the bait or lure behind it.
0:06:14 > 0:06:16So this imitates a school of chinook feeding,
0:06:16 > 0:06:18the way it acts in the water.
0:06:18 > 0:06:21Obviously, that is a hell of a lot bigger than this behind it,
0:06:21 > 0:06:23so once the fish have been attracted by this,
0:06:23 > 0:06:26- they will come in and take that. - There it is. Look at it.
0:06:26 > 0:06:28It's like a disco light with all these fluorescent colours.
0:06:28 > 0:06:30Let's hope the fish are into it.
0:06:30 > 0:06:32Using an echo sounder to assess the depth of the sea,
0:06:32 > 0:06:36the semifinalists must choose how deep to set their tackle.
0:06:36 > 0:06:38Here, it's really important that we get down deep
0:06:38 > 0:06:40where the salmon is, which, on a day like today,
0:06:40 > 0:06:42with super-clear water and bright blue skies,
0:06:42 > 0:06:45is going to be right down near the bottom.
0:06:45 > 0:06:47We've got the fishfinder here which tells us what depth we're at
0:06:47 > 0:06:50and we've got the depth counters on the downriggers,
0:06:50 > 0:06:52so you've got to work the two together.
0:06:52 > 0:06:55- I'm running in 215 feet of water. - I'm going to set this one at 210,
0:06:55 > 0:06:56then, Todd.
0:06:56 > 0:06:59We're fishing in serious steps. You know, it's a long way down.
0:06:59 > 0:07:01Dan should be comfortable out at sea,
0:07:01 > 0:07:05volunteering for the RNLI at home in West Wales.
0:07:05 > 0:07:08I've been with the RNLI 13 years.
0:07:08 > 0:07:10It will give me the advantage
0:07:10 > 0:07:12where, being a helmsman,
0:07:12 > 0:07:15you've got to make the decisions when you are out on the boat.
0:07:15 > 0:07:16The sea is always unpredictable
0:07:16 > 0:07:18and you've got to work under pressure
0:07:18 > 0:07:20and enjoy working under pressure.
0:07:20 > 0:07:2260 feet.
0:07:22 > 0:07:24Make sure you get her right.
0:07:24 > 0:07:27This is like when you're putting petrol in your car
0:07:27 > 0:07:31and you're waiting to get it to an exact round number.
0:07:31 > 0:07:34Now, what movement am I looking for at the end? It's bending over.
0:07:34 > 0:07:36I mean, it looks to me like there might be a fish now.
0:07:36 > 0:07:37LAUGHTER
0:07:37 > 0:07:39- Are you sure there isn't?- I love it.
0:07:39 > 0:07:41- No.- It's a small detail but if we were to get a bite right now
0:07:41 > 0:07:43with this much slack,
0:07:43 > 0:07:45we wouldn't see too much action on the end of the rod.
0:07:45 > 0:07:47What you want to do is just reel up a bit of the slack.
0:07:47 > 0:07:49Now it's getting tighter and tighter
0:07:49 > 0:07:51so it will actually be easier to see a bite
0:07:51 > 0:07:53but when you're fishing in deep depths,
0:07:53 > 0:07:56these little details make actually the difference
0:07:56 > 0:07:59between catching fish and not catching fish.
0:07:59 > 0:08:02But the anglers have to keep an eye on two rods.
0:08:02 > 0:08:06It's quite a challenge watching both rods. You end up playing tennis.
0:08:06 > 0:08:09You know, like this. Going from one rod to the other.
0:08:09 > 0:08:10It drives you bonkers.
0:08:10 > 0:08:12You've got to keep your eyes on the prize.
0:08:12 > 0:08:14Is that bouncing on the bottom?
0:08:17 > 0:08:19I just saw it flip a bit so I just picked the rod up.
0:08:19 > 0:08:21It seems to be coming up very easily...
0:08:21 > 0:08:23considering there should be a fish on it.
0:08:23 > 0:08:25No, it's not there.
0:08:25 > 0:08:29I saw bang, bang, bang and by that time, you were just too slow.
0:08:29 > 0:08:31Getting the slack out of the...
0:08:31 > 0:08:33Right, OK. I can't really tell.
0:08:33 > 0:08:35Is it a fish? I think it might be a fish.
0:08:35 > 0:08:37Something's thumping away down there.
0:08:37 > 0:08:39Do you know what I really like?
0:08:39 > 0:08:42They're actually making all the mistakes we thought they'd make.
0:08:42 > 0:08:43LAUGHTER
0:08:43 > 0:08:45- I think I lost a fish there, yes. - That was a big king.
0:08:45 > 0:08:47Fish one, Sam nil there.
0:08:48 > 0:08:52Sam's attitude to fishing has always been to live and learn.
0:08:52 > 0:08:56I think if I make some mistakes and things don't go quite my way,
0:08:56 > 0:08:57then sometimes,
0:08:57 > 0:09:00there's no point getting worked up or frustrated about it.
0:09:00 > 0:09:03You perhaps just stop for a couple of minutes,
0:09:03 > 0:09:05readdress the situation and then carry on.
0:09:05 > 0:09:07There's no point getting yourself into a blind panic.
0:09:07 > 0:09:10It's not just about catching the fish, it's about the art form.
0:09:10 > 0:09:13It's about all the different techniques and skills
0:09:13 > 0:09:14you've got to learn and master.
0:09:14 > 0:09:17Lost that fish through pure inexperience.
0:09:17 > 0:09:20I've never seen what a bite is like on a downrigger before
0:09:20 > 0:09:22and it totally bamboozled me.
0:09:22 > 0:09:25But if the rod tip's thumping, the line has come out of the clip
0:09:25 > 0:09:27and the only reason it's going to thump
0:09:27 > 0:09:29is if there is a fish on the end so, you know, now I know,
0:09:29 > 0:09:32I can hopefully not make the same mistake again.
0:09:32 > 0:09:35Dan and Sam both lost fish due to inexperience.
0:09:35 > 0:09:39The key will be if they learned their lesson.
0:09:39 > 0:09:41Yeah. Fish on.
0:09:41 > 0:09:43We missed one just now. This one at the moment is still there.
0:09:43 > 0:09:45It's going to surface. There it is.
0:09:49 > 0:09:50There we go.
0:09:50 > 0:09:53There's some real weight on the end of it.
0:09:53 > 0:09:56Bringing him a little closer. Bring him a little closer.
0:09:56 > 0:09:58Oh! It's a huge chinook.
0:09:58 > 0:10:00That's the first one I've ever caught on a rod and line
0:10:00 > 0:10:02so it's just outstanding. Look at that.
0:10:02 > 0:10:05He's getting straight back on with the fishing!
0:10:05 > 0:10:07There's a semifinal mentality if ever there was one.
0:10:07 > 0:10:10I'm glad we've got another bite at the cherry there.
0:10:10 > 0:10:13Yes! First ever salmon.
0:10:13 > 0:10:16Absolutely fantastic, beautiful fish.
0:10:16 > 0:10:18- Look at the chompers on it.- Amazing.
0:10:18 > 0:10:21- Let's get it back in the water. - Yeah. Away he goes.
0:10:21 > 0:10:25I learned the hard way, but at least I got it right second time round.
0:10:25 > 0:10:28Really happy with that, and a beautiful fish.
0:10:28 > 0:10:34Halfway through, and Dan and Sam are in the lead with one salmon each.
0:10:34 > 0:10:37There's always pressure when other people are catching.
0:10:37 > 0:10:39I'll have to go and catch another one.
0:10:39 > 0:10:42James and Jo are still empty-handed.
0:10:42 > 0:10:45The ocean's a big place, but there's plenty of fish down there.
0:10:45 > 0:10:49Jo waits in the area where Sam and Dan have had success.
0:10:49 > 0:10:50Just wait.
0:10:50 > 0:10:52Wait, wait.
0:10:52 > 0:10:55But James, the most experienced salmon fisherman,
0:10:55 > 0:10:57doesn't wait for the fish to come to him.
0:10:57 > 0:11:01We're going slightly further out, so you're just covering more water.
0:11:01 > 0:11:04We're trying a different area which may help us catch something.
0:11:04 > 0:11:07From what I do back home, this does not help me one bit.
0:11:07 > 0:11:10It's like getting a professional footballer to play rugby.
0:11:10 > 0:11:15You're still using a ball, but it's a completely different technique.
0:11:15 > 0:11:17My favourite fishing is salmon fishing.
0:11:17 > 0:11:20I've been doing it since I was 13 years old.
0:11:20 > 0:11:23When I caught my first salmon, it's really hard to describe...
0:11:23 > 0:11:26When you're younger, everything is just magnified,
0:11:26 > 0:11:29especially when the fish is nearly the same size as you!
0:11:29 > 0:11:32Fly-fishing back home in Northumberland,
0:11:32 > 0:11:34James is used to actively seeking out the fish.
0:11:34 > 0:11:36My type of fishing is totally mobile.
0:11:36 > 0:11:39You could cover a mile of fishing in an afternoon,
0:11:39 > 0:11:42you're constantly moving throughout the river, searching for the fish.
0:11:42 > 0:11:45I'm not one of these that likes to be still for the day.
0:11:45 > 0:11:48So, what we're doing is long drifts, back and forth,
0:11:48 > 0:11:51maybe a little bit further out, change the lures the odd time,
0:11:51 > 0:11:54just chop and change, and try and find the fish.
0:11:54 > 0:11:55Try to initiate a take of a fish.
0:11:55 > 0:11:58What I really like about James is that, even though
0:11:58 > 0:12:01he's in a competition, he enjoys himself,
0:12:01 > 0:12:05and he's absolutely determined to make the most of every minute.
0:12:06 > 0:12:07I can't stop smiling!
0:12:12 > 0:12:16She's paying attention to the rods, watching them quite eagerly.
0:12:16 > 0:12:19I haven't seen much communication between her and the guide,
0:12:19 > 0:12:22which the other boats have been doing a lot of.
0:12:22 > 0:12:24They're constantly talking back and forth.
0:12:24 > 0:12:26But she can be quite determined sometimes.
0:12:26 > 0:12:29She goes into a zone and focuses herself.
0:12:29 > 0:12:31She'll be willing, I guarantee,
0:12:31 > 0:12:36more than anybody else, she'll be willing those rods to go over.
0:12:37 > 0:12:39It's really strong!
0:12:39 > 0:12:42Come on, buddy.
0:12:42 > 0:12:44Here he comes.
0:12:45 > 0:12:47Oh, look at him!
0:12:47 > 0:12:49Yes! That amazing.
0:12:49 > 0:12:51Look how beautiful he is. Look at the spots on his back.
0:12:51 > 0:12:56- A beautiful fish.- The greens and the bronzes and the spots on his tail.
0:12:56 > 0:12:58Off he goes.
0:12:58 > 0:12:59Wow!
0:12:59 > 0:13:01Let's do it again.
0:13:05 > 0:13:09Two hours left to catch as many salmon as they can.
0:13:09 > 0:13:13We have just got to keep everything down at the right depth.
0:13:13 > 0:13:14Sam and Dan...
0:13:14 > 0:13:16We're off again!
0:13:16 > 0:13:18No mistaking that one.
0:13:18 > 0:13:19Hello, there.
0:13:19 > 0:13:21A little smaller than the first one.
0:13:21 > 0:13:25..have chosen the right depth, tackle and location.
0:13:25 > 0:13:27Yeah!
0:13:27 > 0:13:30Because size really does matter today.
0:13:30 > 0:13:32Look at that!
0:13:32 > 0:13:35That is an absolutely magnificent creature.
0:13:35 > 0:13:38Wow, Chinook King Salmon.
0:13:38 > 0:13:39That's great.
0:13:39 > 0:13:42That is great. What a magnificent fish.
0:13:42 > 0:13:46Just giving him some time to catch his breath.
0:13:46 > 0:13:49- That was amazing. There he goes. - Very good.
0:13:49 > 0:13:52- Sam, you're hired. - I'm hired?- Yeah!
0:13:54 > 0:13:59But far from all the action is the most experienced salmon fisherman.
0:13:59 > 0:14:02It sounds like someone's hooked up close in.
0:14:02 > 0:14:06The tactic so far has been different depths, different lures,
0:14:06 > 0:14:09mainly moving about, trying to find the fish.
0:14:09 > 0:14:12I know we're fishing right, it's just finding the fish.
0:14:12 > 0:14:16And, with no bites at all, he decides to follow the herd.
0:14:16 > 0:14:20We're going to go back where these other boats are catching fish.
0:14:20 > 0:14:22So, at least they're feeding, that's the main thing.
0:14:22 > 0:14:25Just need to get over there and catch something.
0:14:27 > 0:14:28One hour to go.
0:14:30 > 0:14:31We're off again.
0:14:31 > 0:14:35If he starts to come towards me, I have to reel in as fast as I can.
0:14:35 > 0:14:36I've hooked another one.
0:14:36 > 0:14:38I don't want to jinx it,
0:14:38 > 0:14:41but it feels a little bit better than the other. In the net.
0:14:41 > 0:14:42Fish number three.
0:14:42 > 0:14:45On top of the world, mate, top of the world.
0:14:45 > 0:14:48Dan and Sam are fighting for the lead with three salmon each.
0:14:48 > 0:14:51Now is the time to just keep on going.
0:14:51 > 0:14:53Who knows what the other guys have caught.
0:14:53 > 0:14:55Can't be complacent now.
0:14:55 > 0:15:00Jo is changing her flasher, hoping to change her fortune.
0:15:00 > 0:15:03The bites have been quite deep, so I'm going to put this one
0:15:03 > 0:15:07a bit deeper to see if we can catch one down there.
0:15:08 > 0:15:11Two different depths, different lures, different baits.
0:15:11 > 0:15:15You deserve the fish. I mean, you're doing all the right things.
0:15:15 > 0:15:17We're now actually on the best time, because we are
0:15:17 > 0:15:22on the high tide, so the tide is now fairly slack, it's not moving much.
0:15:22 > 0:15:25The fish go into a bit of a feeding frenzy for that period of time,
0:15:25 > 0:15:27and this is a critical time to catch your fish.
0:15:27 > 0:15:29We're in the final minutes, so just see now
0:15:29 > 0:15:32whether one of these rods decides to go.
0:15:32 > 0:15:35I'm thinking tactically I'm not going to change anything.
0:15:35 > 0:15:36If it's not broke, don't fix it.
0:15:36 > 0:15:40Just one fish, come on. One fish. Come on, man!
0:15:44 > 0:15:47There we go. Really nice to get a fourth one.
0:15:47 > 0:15:50This one feels a bit smaller.
0:15:50 > 0:15:51- Jo!- How are you doing?
0:15:51 > 0:15:53Ahh!
0:15:55 > 0:15:57Maybe a bit smaller,
0:15:57 > 0:16:00but nonetheless welcome on a day like today.
0:16:00 > 0:16:03This is really exciting. There's fish being caught.
0:16:03 > 0:16:05Got to stay confident.
0:16:05 > 0:16:08- It's not over till the fat lady sings.- Yes!- Excellent!
0:16:08 > 0:16:09Absolutely stunning.
0:16:10 > 0:16:12Good fun.
0:16:13 > 0:16:15- Rods in?- Yes.- Is that it?
0:16:20 > 0:16:22I hope I've done all right, I really do.
0:16:22 > 0:16:25It'd be nice to get off to a good start here in BC,
0:16:25 > 0:16:28particularly as I think some of the other stuff could be even
0:16:28 > 0:16:30further out of my comfort zone this week.
0:16:30 > 0:16:33Two salmon on the boat. At least it's not nothing.
0:16:33 > 0:16:37The judges were looking for total length of salmon caught,
0:16:37 > 0:16:40and they discuss the anglers' performance in detail
0:16:40 > 0:16:42with their guides.
0:16:50 > 0:16:54- Welcome ashore, well done, guys. Did you enjoy it?- Brilliant.- Amazing day.
0:16:54 > 0:16:59Well, Dan, you were the first to hook this amazing Pacific salmon.
0:16:59 > 0:17:02There they are releasing it, and I look at you,
0:17:02 > 0:17:04and here you are with a fishing rod in your hand,
0:17:04 > 0:17:06getting ready to set it up already.
0:17:06 > 0:17:08Right away I knew, this guy means business.
0:17:08 > 0:17:12Initially, you made the classic mistake of not getting that
0:17:12 > 0:17:15rod bent enough, but you learned quickly,
0:17:15 > 0:17:18and that is how you become a master angler.
0:17:18 > 0:17:20Jo, I thought you did a really good job.
0:17:20 > 0:17:24However, I noticed one side of the boat worked really well
0:17:24 > 0:17:25for you today.
0:17:25 > 0:17:28Late in the day, I saw you make a change, and sure enough,
0:17:28 > 0:17:32another take, so maybe a little slow on changing the side of the boat.
0:17:32 > 0:17:34Onto our resident salmon fisherman.
0:17:34 > 0:17:36- James.- Can we just skip to Sam?
0:17:36 > 0:17:38No fish.
0:17:38 > 0:17:40That's always hard to take.
0:17:40 > 0:17:43It seems like you were making good choices on what to use.
0:17:43 > 0:17:47- However, your boat was separated from the other boats.- Yes.
0:17:47 > 0:17:50It seems to me like when you figured out where you should be,
0:17:50 > 0:17:53- you were a little late to the party. - Cheers, mate.
0:17:53 > 0:17:54Last but by no means least, Sam.
0:17:54 > 0:17:58Your guide said that you ended up fishing like a guide,
0:17:58 > 0:18:01so that tells me that you made mistakes only once.
0:18:01 > 0:18:05You obviously took the information you were given and adapted it.
0:18:05 > 0:18:07I'd say that's pretty good.
0:18:07 > 0:18:13The statistics speak for themselves with 325cm of Chinook Pacific salmon.
0:18:13 > 0:18:15You are today's winner.
0:18:15 > 0:18:17Well done.
0:18:17 > 0:18:21Dan came second, almost a metre behind Sam, and Jo was third.
0:18:22 > 0:18:25- Well done, everyone.- Well done all.
0:18:25 > 0:18:28Although the anglers released the salmon they'd caught,
0:18:28 > 0:18:33the locals kept one of their catch for the anglers to try.
0:18:33 > 0:18:35- This is ready, yes.- Look at that.
0:18:35 > 0:18:38A full side of salmon, it's amazing.
0:18:38 > 0:18:40- Wow.- There's only four of us left.
0:18:40 > 0:18:43The chances of going home get greater every time we move on,
0:18:43 > 0:18:46so to have one win under my belt is a good feeling.
0:18:46 > 0:18:49You know, a third. I'd have preferred a second or a first,
0:18:49 > 0:18:51but it's better than last.
0:18:51 > 0:18:52Back home, I do not eat salmon!
0:18:52 > 0:18:56I didn't get any negative feedback about the stuff I was using,
0:18:56 > 0:18:59which was nice, but it doesn't make up for the lack of fish.
0:18:59 > 0:19:01But it's just not your day.
0:19:02 > 0:19:04That is fantastic, mate.
0:19:04 > 0:19:08- You're just saying that because he's here!- It won't change my judging!
0:19:08 > 0:19:10Mate, that is absolutely amazing.
0:19:16 > 0:19:18For their second day in Canada,
0:19:18 > 0:19:21the anglers head to the mainland of British Columbia.
0:19:23 > 0:19:28Between majestic mountain ranges, water flows from snowy glaciers
0:19:28 > 0:19:32into streams, lakes and rivers, and then onto the Pacific Ocean.
0:19:32 > 0:19:37Millions of migrating fish swim up these rivers every year,
0:19:37 > 0:19:41and the anglers have made the same journey to the Upper Pitt River
0:19:41 > 0:19:44to fish for a type of char known as bull trout.
0:19:44 > 0:19:45Welcome, anglers.
0:19:45 > 0:19:48Today, you'll be heading out into this stretch
0:19:48 > 0:19:51of the freezing cold river to fly fish.
0:19:51 > 0:19:52This is a glacial fed water.
0:19:52 > 0:19:55These fish are in the river at this time of the year,
0:19:55 > 0:19:58eating aggressively, so take advantage.
0:19:58 > 0:20:00This is going to be a big challenge,
0:20:00 > 0:20:03but it should be, we're at the sharp end of the competition.
0:20:03 > 0:20:08It's all down to you, and how good your pure fishing skills are.
0:20:08 > 0:20:10Sam, you won yesterday's part of the expedition.
0:20:10 > 0:20:13- If you'd like to join me here. - My choice for today is James.
0:20:13 > 0:20:15He's been a lifelong fly angler.
0:20:15 > 0:20:19James, I'd like you to be on the team with me today, please.
0:20:19 > 0:20:21OK, we have our two teams.
0:20:21 > 0:20:22Go fish!
0:20:27 > 0:20:30The teams have just three hours across two different
0:20:30 > 0:20:34sections of the river to catch as many bull trout as they can.
0:20:35 > 0:20:39In these windy conditions, the judges will be looking at how the anglers
0:20:39 > 0:20:44work as a team, read the water, and choose their tackle to find the fish.
0:20:44 > 0:20:46Come on, mate. Let's do it.
0:20:46 > 0:20:47Do you want to start here?
0:20:47 > 0:20:50- I'll start here. - OK, I'll go bit further.
0:20:50 > 0:20:52I know hardly anything about what's going on today.
0:20:52 > 0:20:55We haven't rarely got a major strategy,
0:20:55 > 0:20:58we're just going to have to cast and hope for the best, really.
0:20:58 > 0:21:01Whereabouts in the river are they going to find these fish?
0:21:01 > 0:21:04These fish tend to sit in the current seams
0:21:04 > 0:21:06and closer to shore than you'd think.
0:21:06 > 0:21:10Because the water has a bit of colour, the fish feel more secure.
0:21:10 > 0:21:13Often the fish are actually in shallow,
0:21:13 > 0:21:16and when you're eager to get out and rush into the water,
0:21:16 > 0:21:18you spook the fish you're trying to catch,
0:21:18 > 0:21:19so that would be the first mistake.
0:21:19 > 0:21:22It's a bit deeper here than when I first set out.
0:21:22 > 0:21:26I decided to wade out a little way, because I'm thinking
0:21:26 > 0:21:28that the fish are going to be running down the deeper channels.
0:21:28 > 0:21:31I'm going to start short in case there's any fish in close.
0:21:31 > 0:21:33They sit right at the bottom,
0:21:33 > 0:21:35with the boulders and other obstructions.
0:21:35 > 0:21:36The current is not as strong,
0:21:36 > 0:21:40so they sit right to the bottom then they can get under the current.
0:21:40 > 0:21:42That's why we need to get the flies down deep.
0:21:42 > 0:21:45The anglers can use a combination of weighted flies
0:21:45 > 0:21:47and sinking lines.
0:21:47 > 0:21:50Rather than sitting at the surface,
0:21:50 > 0:21:56this tackle is designed to sink to the depth where the fish are feeding.
0:21:57 > 0:22:00In a fast flowing river, a heavier line and fly are needed
0:22:00 > 0:22:03to counter the speed of the current.
0:22:04 > 0:22:07In a slower river, lighter tackle will do the job.
0:22:10 > 0:22:11You want the fish to see the fly,
0:22:11 > 0:22:14but you don't want them to see it so well
0:22:14 > 0:22:16that they can tell that it's a deception.
0:22:16 > 0:22:18If a fish could speak, it should be able to say,
0:22:18 > 0:22:21"What was that?" not, "There it is!"
0:22:21 > 0:22:23The fly has got to be going at the right speed,
0:22:23 > 0:22:25and most importantly,
0:22:25 > 0:22:27it needs to be at the right depth.
0:22:27 > 0:22:30The person who figures out to get the fly down
0:22:30 > 0:22:32will probably catch the fish.
0:22:32 > 0:22:34But I think it's going to be a nightmare with this wind.
0:22:34 > 0:22:38With big weighted flies, it's a real danger of hooking yourself.
0:22:40 > 0:22:43This wind is giving me trouble. It's coming right upstream.
0:22:43 > 0:22:45I've already caught the fly in the head once,
0:22:45 > 0:22:46you've got to be careful.
0:22:46 > 0:22:50Me and Sam both agreed to fish using a similar technique,
0:22:50 > 0:22:51similar flies,
0:22:51 > 0:22:54so whichever one works best, we'll swap to straightaway.
0:22:54 > 0:22:57It's the marabou that you put in the tail.
0:23:01 > 0:23:03It's caught my lip.
0:23:05 > 0:23:06Ow!
0:23:08 > 0:23:11That's the first time in 15 years that I've caught myself.
0:23:11 > 0:23:13I know how the fish feel now!
0:23:15 > 0:23:16Ahh!
0:23:16 > 0:23:19Come on, Jo, you can do better than this.
0:23:19 > 0:23:21A bit of a tangle I've got myself in.
0:23:21 > 0:23:23It would be nice if this wind would calm down.
0:23:23 > 0:23:26Jo ties her own flies at home in Suffolk,
0:23:26 > 0:23:30and loves the satisfaction of catching a fish on one she has made.
0:23:30 > 0:23:33I'm always thinking about what I need to tie next,
0:23:33 > 0:23:37and what can I do to that pattern to entice the fish a little bit easier.
0:23:37 > 0:23:40I'm not the biggest person in the world, but I'm quite strong.
0:23:40 > 0:23:43I don't like to give up, especially when it comes to my strength.
0:23:43 > 0:23:46I'd probably fight until it broke my arm or something.
0:23:46 > 0:23:48I'm not sure what I'm going to choose next.
0:23:48 > 0:23:52The water is really strong so I need something quite heavy.
0:23:52 > 0:23:54This is a monstrous thing, look at the size of this.
0:23:54 > 0:23:56Change into another one.
0:23:56 > 0:23:59I'm putting sink tips and all that caper on.
0:23:59 > 0:24:03I'm struggling enough with what I've got to deal with now.
0:24:03 > 0:24:05Right, we shall try again.
0:24:05 > 0:24:08Changing tackle is crucial for getting to know the water.
0:24:09 > 0:24:12I'm going to try something with a bit more weight to it.
0:24:21 > 0:24:26Hey! Here we have the smallest trout ever, by the looks of it.
0:24:26 > 0:24:30It may be tiny, but hey, it's beautiful. There we go.
0:24:30 > 0:24:34I changed my fly, and the first cast with a new fly, I got a bite.
0:24:34 > 0:24:37It's a bit heavier, this fly, so it got down a bit deeper.
0:24:37 > 0:24:39- Again on the fur one, mate.- Honest?
0:24:39 > 0:24:41Yeah, that's what worked.
0:24:42 > 0:24:44One hour gone.
0:24:44 > 0:24:46Horrendous casting, Jo!
0:24:47 > 0:24:51Go home and think about what you've done. So fast.
0:24:52 > 0:24:54When fly-fishing on a river,
0:24:54 > 0:24:57the many currents can move the fly line
0:24:57 > 0:25:01and leader at different speeds, causing the fly to move either faster
0:25:01 > 0:25:05or slower than the current, which looks unrealistic to the fish.
0:25:05 > 0:25:09To counter this, the anglers should mend the line,
0:25:09 > 0:25:13carefully adjusting the fly line without moving the fly.
0:25:13 > 0:25:16Mending the line controls the speed of the fly,
0:25:16 > 0:25:18and the depth at which it swims.
0:25:18 > 0:25:23OK, this is my chance to show everyone everything I've learned.
0:25:23 > 0:25:24You are good.
0:25:26 > 0:25:28- Where has my fly gone? Is this mine? - Oh, dear!
0:25:28 > 0:25:31Oh, no! Wrong time to turn up!
0:25:31 > 0:25:32It's the fishing police.
0:25:32 > 0:25:36Right, now that you've reached advanced status,
0:25:36 > 0:25:39- do you want me to show you the final kind of trick?- Yes.
0:25:39 > 0:25:43What I'm going to do now is bring it out,
0:25:43 > 0:25:44put it across,
0:25:44 > 0:25:45and then I'm going to mend...
0:25:45 > 0:25:48Do you see how I'm flicking the line upstream?
0:25:48 > 0:25:49I'm letting the fly sink deeper.
0:25:49 > 0:25:53When it gets to 45 degrees, let it swing with the current.
0:25:53 > 0:25:56It's down deep and coming in where those bull trout lie.
0:25:56 > 0:26:00We'll just go the far side, upstream end, let the fly come round,
0:26:00 > 0:26:02not even moving it. There's too much current.
0:26:02 > 0:26:05If you move it, your bring the fly up, you want to keep it down.
0:26:05 > 0:26:09Mend the line, follow it round, give that fly time to sink.
0:26:09 > 0:26:11It's really important to get it down deep.
0:26:15 > 0:26:18Just waiting for a big... You keep expecting it to come,
0:26:18 > 0:26:19but it doesn't come.
0:26:19 > 0:26:21A couple more steps downstream...
0:26:23 > 0:26:24Fish on.
0:26:24 > 0:26:26This one feels a bit bigger.
0:26:26 > 0:26:28Not massive.
0:26:28 > 0:26:30There we are.
0:26:30 > 0:26:31Fantastic.
0:26:31 > 0:26:33Number two. There you go.
0:26:33 > 0:26:35I think the fly with a bit of extra weight to it,
0:26:35 > 0:26:38getting down deeper, seems to be the trick.
0:26:38 > 0:26:40As soon as I put this on, I could feel him bite,
0:26:40 > 0:26:43so I'll stick with that for the time being.
0:26:43 > 0:26:46It was actually quite close into the fish tuck,
0:26:46 > 0:26:50and it didn't feel like a big fish at first, but it is a hefty fish.
0:26:50 > 0:26:52It is fighting well. That's a good fish.
0:26:52 > 0:26:54Whoa!
0:26:55 > 0:26:58Yes! Oh, what a beautiful fish.
0:26:58 > 0:27:03This is probably the biggest trout I have ever caught. Look at that.
0:27:03 > 0:27:04Get in!
0:27:05 > 0:27:07It hasn't gone well - we haven't caught a fish.
0:27:07 > 0:27:10Somebody's had a fish up there, I've seen them.
0:27:10 > 0:27:13I love getting the fly line caught in my boots, in my waders.
0:27:15 > 0:27:19Halfway through, and time is up on their first stretch of river.
0:27:20 > 0:27:24Sam and James have three fish, while Jo and Dan have caught nothing.
0:27:25 > 0:27:29- Yes, this one looks a bit nicer, this bit.- Slower.
0:27:29 > 0:27:31It has got some structure in it.
0:27:31 > 0:27:33I've just changed to a faster sinking tip.
0:27:33 > 0:27:36Just need to get the fly down into the deeper bits.
0:27:40 > 0:27:42I've got to try and keep my cool
0:27:42 > 0:27:46because I've got 1.5 hours now to try and catch a fish.
0:27:46 > 0:27:49- I need to cast better, though. - How are you getting on?
0:27:49 > 0:27:53I've only just kind of started here, but on the other half not so well.
0:27:53 > 0:27:56I've changed onto a super fast sinking tip
0:27:56 > 0:27:59with a little gold headed thing on the end here.
0:27:59 > 0:28:00Good luck.
0:28:04 > 0:28:09The judges are looking at the way the anglers assess the water.
0:28:09 > 0:28:10Just changing fly up.
0:28:10 > 0:28:13We are going to go for something a bit bigger and a bit heavier.
0:28:13 > 0:28:17The current is really hoofing through here, it's really powerful.
0:28:17 > 0:28:20I want to make sure I'm getting down a bit deeper.
0:28:20 > 0:28:22If you could choose anywhere as a person to swim,
0:28:22 > 0:28:24you wouldn't swim in the rapids,
0:28:24 > 0:28:28you'd swim on the outside where it's a bit calmer.
0:28:28 > 0:28:29I'm in!
0:28:32 > 0:28:35That was a bit of a quick one. Just a small one.
0:28:35 > 0:28:37It actually looks like a rainbow.
0:28:37 > 0:28:39It's a form of trout, a beautiful looking fish.
0:28:39 > 0:28:42It was really close in, these fish are not far out, so...
0:28:42 > 0:28:46That has just spurred me on even more. It's that lucky fly!
0:28:47 > 0:28:48Yes, I'm in!
0:28:52 > 0:28:53- Yes.- Phew!
0:28:54 > 0:28:57OK, buddy. Whoo!
0:28:59 > 0:29:02I just lost a fish there, I'm not sure what happened.
0:29:02 > 0:29:04I had one on and then I lost it.
0:29:04 > 0:29:05Oh, yes.
0:29:05 > 0:29:07This is a better fish.
0:29:07 > 0:29:09This is a good fish. I'm feeling a bit tense.
0:29:09 > 0:29:11I've got to keep that line tight,
0:29:11 > 0:29:14but give it time to run because it wants to run.
0:29:14 > 0:29:17It's coming towards me. Coming towards me...
0:29:18 > 0:29:19Yes!
0:29:21 > 0:29:23Oh, look at that. This is a stunner.
0:29:23 > 0:29:27Beautiful red spots on the belly, yellow on top.
0:29:27 > 0:29:28He's a beauty.
0:29:28 > 0:29:29Thanks, buddy.
0:29:29 > 0:29:31Off you go.
0:29:33 > 0:29:36- How are you coping? - I haven't caught anything.
0:29:36 > 0:29:40I'm the only one not to catch something, now Jo's caught one.
0:29:40 > 0:29:42- Right.- I've very just put the fast sinking tip on.
0:29:42 > 0:29:46That was the mistake I made early on, not having the fast sinking tip.
0:29:46 > 0:29:50Well, it's in the water now, and I'm curious to see if you will hook up.
0:29:50 > 0:29:53It's a team effort, and I need to put something into the team.
0:30:01 > 0:30:05Half an hour left for the teams to catch as many bull trout as they can.
0:30:05 > 0:30:09I'm going to get a march on down here, try and cover some more water.
0:30:09 > 0:30:11I wonder how Sam's getting on.
0:30:13 > 0:30:16Just waiting for that tug. Two I had up the other end, trout,
0:30:16 > 0:30:19but that's what counts, but they weren't big.
0:30:19 > 0:30:21It'd be nice to get something real nice on the line.
0:30:21 > 0:30:25- I think your best chance is there, Dan. Give it a go.- Thank you.
0:30:25 > 0:30:29Give Dan a chance to fish here, I'll go further down.
0:30:29 > 0:30:31I think this is where Jo had two bites,
0:30:31 > 0:30:35but she may have had the fish that were sitting here.
0:30:35 > 0:30:36Last 30 seconds.
0:30:38 > 0:30:41Oh! I've caught a stone.
0:30:43 > 0:30:48- I would love some extra fishing time.- One more cast! Make it count!
0:30:58 > 0:30:59Come on!
0:31:02 > 0:31:05Do you think it would be funny if I shouted "Fish on!"?
0:31:05 > 0:31:09He'd have kittens, wouldn't he? I better not do it.
0:31:09 > 0:31:11Time up now.
0:31:11 > 0:31:14It has been quite an experience.
0:31:15 > 0:31:18It's judgment time for the semifinalists.
0:31:21 > 0:31:24James and Sam have caught four trout.
0:31:24 > 0:31:26Jo and Dan caught two.
0:31:28 > 0:31:31James, you've still got your fly there. How's the lip?
0:31:31 > 0:31:34Unfortunately, I don't count as a fish, so, we'll wait and see.
0:31:34 > 0:31:36- But you did catch two fish? - I caught two.
0:31:36 > 0:31:38One was a bull trout, the other was a rainbow.
0:31:38 > 0:31:40I thought of everyone here,
0:31:40 > 0:31:43you easily were the best at casting the fly.
0:31:43 > 0:31:45However, I think it cost you at times,
0:31:45 > 0:31:47maybe missing some of the fish in shallow.
0:31:47 > 0:31:49Sam, you caught two fish today.
0:31:49 > 0:31:52Not the biggest, but two bull trout nonetheless.
0:31:52 > 0:31:54Unfortunately, speaking to the guides,
0:31:54 > 0:31:57- it was actually only one bull trout. - Was it only one?
0:31:57 > 0:32:01- Oh, that's disappointing.- The first fish you caught was a rainbow trout.
0:32:01 > 0:32:05However, saying that, you were the first to catch a fish, and I noticed
0:32:05 > 0:32:09that you quickly communicated that with your partner in this challenge.
0:32:09 > 0:32:11Great teamwork.
0:32:11 > 0:32:14OK, onto the other team, Jo and Dan.
0:32:14 > 0:32:16Jo, you caught a fantastic fish today
0:32:16 > 0:32:18and you must be so pleased about that.
0:32:18 > 0:32:20You were struggling a bit
0:32:20 > 0:32:22when that wind was really hitting your casting arm -
0:32:22 > 0:32:25try not to hold that rod so far from your body.
0:32:25 > 0:32:27Get it a little bit tighter in
0:32:27 > 0:32:29because when your casting breaks down,
0:32:29 > 0:32:32it tends to be because you're pushing that rod away.
0:32:32 > 0:32:36- Dan, slightly long face there. No fish, no bull.- No bull.
0:32:36 > 0:32:39I noticed to start the day you had a floating line,
0:32:39 > 0:32:42pretty critical mistake, not being able to get down.
0:32:42 > 0:32:43You did make the change.
0:32:43 > 0:32:46You put on a sink tip, which is critical to this fishing.
0:32:46 > 0:32:49Look, Dan, if you're going to win this competition,
0:32:49 > 0:32:52it's not enough to say I don't do that sort of fishing
0:32:52 > 0:32:53because this is a fishing competition
0:32:53 > 0:32:57in which your fishing technique and skills are going to be analysed.
0:32:57 > 0:33:02In terms of team results, each team caught two bull trout between you.
0:33:02 > 0:33:04It's a draw. Well done, guys.
0:33:04 > 0:33:09But the individual angler who came away with the most bull trout is Jo.
0:33:09 > 0:33:11Well done, Jo. Very good.
0:33:11 > 0:33:13I was not expecting that.
0:33:13 > 0:33:16What a place to finish today's expedition.
0:33:16 > 0:33:19Make sure you get some good rest because tomorrow is a big day.
0:33:19 > 0:33:21See you in the morning.
0:33:21 > 0:33:22Through the whole thing,
0:33:22 > 0:33:26I think I've maybe had one other challenge I haven't caught fish.
0:33:26 > 0:33:29You know, it's a bitter pill to swallow.
0:33:29 > 0:33:31Being this close to the final
0:33:31 > 0:33:34and having it within grasping distance, you know,
0:33:34 > 0:33:37you really want to do as well as you can
0:33:37 > 0:33:40in every challenge, so I'm just going to give it my all tomorrow.
0:33:40 > 0:33:41This is the most open it's been yet.
0:33:41 > 0:33:44I'm just going to go into tomorrow positive,
0:33:44 > 0:33:47fish as hard as I can, don't make any mistakes, just make sure
0:33:47 > 0:33:50everything is right, and just rely on that fish coming along.
0:33:50 > 0:33:53There's still one challenge to go, a lot of hard work to go,
0:33:53 > 0:33:54but to be honest...
0:33:56 > 0:33:58..task number three is my nemesis.
0:33:58 > 0:34:01I am still yet to catch a fish in the third round.
0:34:01 > 0:34:03So I'll never think that I'm safe yet.
0:34:14 > 0:34:18For the last task in the semifinal, the pressure is on
0:34:18 > 0:34:23as the anglers head to the longest river in British Columbia.
0:34:23 > 0:34:27The Fraser River runs from the Rocky Mountains, all the way
0:34:27 > 0:34:30to where the anglers were fishing for salmon at the beginning
0:34:30 > 0:34:31of their time in Canada.
0:34:31 > 0:34:34- That is amazing, I can't get over this place.- It's beautiful.
0:34:34 > 0:34:37For the final part of their expedition,
0:34:37 > 0:34:39our anglers are after the big one.
0:34:39 > 0:34:43They'll be fishing for one of the giants of this mighty river,
0:34:43 > 0:34:46one of the biggest freshwater fish in the world.
0:34:53 > 0:34:55- Morning, everyone.- Morning, mate. - Morning, how are you?
0:34:55 > 0:34:57- Are you ready for this?- Oh, yeah.
0:34:57 > 0:35:01Today, you are all after a giant of the river -
0:35:01 > 0:35:03the white sturgeon.
0:35:03 > 0:35:05Get in.
0:35:05 > 0:35:09Not only will you be fishing for this incredible species,
0:35:09 > 0:35:11but you're going to be helping to conserve it.
0:35:11 > 0:35:13Over the last 15 years,
0:35:13 > 0:35:17sport fishermen have been working alongside conservationists
0:35:17 > 0:35:18to tag them and help with the research -
0:35:18 > 0:35:23help understand more about these river dinosaurs.
0:35:23 > 0:35:28The angler to catch the largest sturgeon wins.
0:35:28 > 0:35:30- Go fish.- Good, mate.
0:35:36 > 0:35:39Let's go and catch us a dinosaur. It might be bigger than me.
0:35:39 > 0:35:41Quite possibly.
0:35:41 > 0:35:44Good luck, mate. I hope we all get something. I do.
0:35:44 > 0:35:45I just hope I get the biggest.
0:35:47 > 0:35:50The semifinalists have six hours
0:35:50 > 0:35:53to fish a 30km stretch of the mighty Fraser River.
0:35:54 > 0:35:56Each boat will have a fishfinder,
0:35:56 > 0:36:00but it'll be up to the anglers to use the technology,
0:36:00 > 0:36:02their guide, and their own experience,
0:36:02 > 0:36:06to read the river to find these ancient fish.
0:36:08 > 0:36:11A survivor from the Jurassic era,
0:36:11 > 0:36:14sturgeon live at the bottom of this immense river,
0:36:14 > 0:36:16and with poor eyesight,
0:36:16 > 0:36:19they must rely on their sense of smell to feed.
0:36:19 > 0:36:22They can grow up to 6m long,
0:36:22 > 0:36:25and live for over 150 years.
0:36:25 > 0:36:28They may be old but they're powerful.
0:36:28 > 0:36:31You're looking at 10 or 11 feet of armour-plated fish
0:36:31 > 0:36:34that can jump several feet in the air, shaking its body,
0:36:34 > 0:36:35and then it's off downriver.
0:36:35 > 0:36:40It's using all of this current behind its body mass, and its tail.
0:36:40 > 0:36:43These sturgeon are here because we get millions of salmon -
0:36:43 > 0:36:45where there's food, there's fish.
0:36:45 > 0:36:48We talk about matching the hatch in fly-fishing, which is
0:36:48 > 0:36:51basically choosing the fly that the fish are feeding on that day,
0:36:51 > 0:36:53but this is matching the hatch.
0:36:53 > 0:36:55It's providing the sturgeon with the bait source
0:36:55 > 0:36:58that they're feeding on right now.
0:36:58 > 0:37:01- Oh, lampreys.- Yes. - That's a fantastic bait.
0:37:01 > 0:37:03We use these for pike fishing back home.
0:37:03 > 0:37:05So much scent in them - they're fantastic.
0:37:05 > 0:37:07That's exactly why they work. They're also...
0:37:07 > 0:37:10In this coloured water, that's exactly what we need.
0:37:10 > 0:37:14But not all their bait is so conventional.
0:37:14 > 0:37:17- This here is what we actually utilise.- Tights!
0:37:17 > 0:37:20- For 160 to 190, so we want to catch a fish that big.- OK.
0:37:20 > 0:37:23- This is going to be for wrapping up some of the bait we use.- OK.
0:37:23 > 0:37:25- First time I've ever used tights. - HE LAUGHS
0:37:25 > 0:37:27You can't put a salmon egg on a hook,
0:37:27 > 0:37:29so what you've got to do is get a spoonful of eggs,
0:37:29 > 0:37:32put them in some tights, not too many,
0:37:32 > 0:37:35and all this does is it creates a big ball of salmon eggs,
0:37:35 > 0:37:38which is more appealing to the sturgeon.
0:37:38 > 0:37:40Just trying to get it on the hook without hooking yourself,
0:37:40 > 0:37:42cos I've learnt from yesterday,
0:37:42 > 0:37:44I do not want to get another hook in me.
0:37:44 > 0:37:48The bait should be cast behind the boat, into the current seams,
0:37:48 > 0:37:52to ensure the sense spreads downriver towards these bottom-feeding fish.
0:37:53 > 0:37:55In such a powerful current,
0:37:55 > 0:37:59a heavy weight is needed to secure the bait to the riverbed.
0:37:59 > 0:38:02If the weight's too light, it will bounce along the bottom,
0:38:02 > 0:38:06causing the rod tip to move as if there's a fish on the line.
0:38:06 > 0:38:09I look at this river and I see my local River Severn.
0:38:09 > 0:38:10You know, it's a big river.
0:38:10 > 0:38:13This is colossal, but all of the current seams,
0:38:13 > 0:38:14the slack pockets,
0:38:14 > 0:38:17the coloured water - that's exactly the same.
0:38:17 > 0:38:19But using such heavy equipment
0:38:19 > 0:38:23can make accurate casting a little difficult.
0:38:23 > 0:38:24Whoa.
0:38:24 > 0:38:27I should have worked on my muscles before I came out here.
0:38:27 > 0:38:29And how far, typically?
0:38:29 > 0:38:31- 20 yards out the back of the boat here.- Right.
0:38:34 > 0:38:35- Is that far enough?- Perfect.
0:38:35 > 0:38:38When one of the sturgeon takes their bait, what can they expect?
0:38:38 > 0:38:40Are they going to be hauled into the water?
0:38:40 > 0:38:42Are fishermen are going to be clinging on for dear life?
0:38:42 > 0:38:46Surprisingly, Sturgeon don't have a big, powerful bite.
0:38:46 > 0:38:49Oftentimes, it's really subtle.
0:38:49 > 0:38:51Very surprising for such a large fish.
0:38:51 > 0:38:55Sometimes the rod may move just an inch or two,
0:38:55 > 0:38:59and that could be a three, four, 500lb fish at the end of the rod.
0:38:59 > 0:39:01This is now all about mental strength.
0:39:01 > 0:39:04Just the pressure of that opportunity
0:39:04 > 0:39:05to land this giant fish -
0:39:05 > 0:39:08it's what makes you go fishing in the first place.
0:39:08 > 0:39:10It comes down to that.
0:39:10 > 0:39:12Who hooks the monster? Have they got the bottle?
0:39:12 > 0:39:14Oh, wait.
0:39:22 > 0:39:23Fish on.
0:39:25 > 0:39:27It's just the concentration. You're just trying to
0:39:27 > 0:39:30tell the difference between the current and the fish.
0:39:30 > 0:39:32Wahey, straight in!
0:39:32 > 0:39:33It was a little baby sturgeon.
0:39:33 > 0:39:36Crikey!
0:39:36 > 0:39:38As you can see on the tip, it slightly vibrates.
0:39:38 > 0:39:41There's a little bit of movement. A lot of small fish on here,
0:39:41 > 0:39:43which is what's creating these small bites here.
0:39:43 > 0:39:44Oy!
0:39:44 > 0:39:47We're off. Here we go.
0:39:47 > 0:39:49We've got a sturgeon on the line. Here we are.
0:39:49 > 0:39:52For a small fish, that ran like hell.
0:39:52 > 0:39:54Oh, my goodness. Oh, my goodness.
0:39:54 > 0:39:57Here he comes. He's coming up. There we go.
0:39:57 > 0:39:59- HE GRUNTS - OK, It's not a monster.
0:39:59 > 0:40:02It's not a monster by any means, but it's a fish.
0:40:02 > 0:40:04We just need a big car-sized sturgeon to come along
0:40:04 > 0:40:06and wolf the bait up.
0:40:06 > 0:40:08The first thing I do is check if this fish has a tag inside of it.
0:40:08 > 0:40:10- OK.- This fish is already in the database.
0:40:10 > 0:40:13So now we can find out, in the future, whether he's grown.
0:40:13 > 0:40:14It's brilliant.
0:40:14 > 0:40:18There you have it. One metre, what was it? 43.
0:40:18 > 0:40:19There he goes.
0:40:19 > 0:40:22It's swimming away, tail kicking. It's a good start.
0:40:22 > 0:40:24Right, I think we should get some fresh bait out there,
0:40:24 > 0:40:26see if we can catch another one.
0:40:26 > 0:40:29Look at that. Really archaic. Beautiful patterns on its head.
0:40:29 > 0:40:30Look at the barbells.
0:40:30 > 0:40:34Beautiful fish. It's the most amazing thing, actually,
0:40:34 > 0:40:36to catch my first sturgeon, and it wasn't a monster.
0:40:36 > 0:40:38It can get in excess of 1,000 pounds.
0:40:38 > 0:40:41I think, if I hooked into a monstrous thing like that,
0:40:41 > 0:40:43then I might be in trouble.
0:40:43 > 0:40:47I might have to employ all of the muscle power I have.
0:40:47 > 0:40:49Yeah, it is quite daunting.
0:40:49 > 0:40:53It's really important that I catch a fish today, just due to the fact
0:40:53 > 0:40:55how unlucky I've been.
0:40:55 > 0:40:58I did excellent yesterday, just didn't catch the right species.
0:40:58 > 0:41:01You should fish how you do best, do you know what I mean?
0:41:01 > 0:41:03Don't let...the way other people...
0:41:06 > 0:41:09Don't let the way other people affect...
0:41:11 > 0:41:13Concentration here, it's crazy. It's just...
0:41:16 > 0:41:19One hour gone. Although they've had some success,
0:41:19 > 0:41:23nobody has met any of the monsters that this river is famous.
0:41:23 > 0:41:25We've found a load on the sounder.
0:41:25 > 0:41:27It looked like there were some big ones down there.
0:41:27 > 0:41:29It looks really good. We've got this steadier water.
0:41:29 > 0:41:31There's some snag down there.
0:41:31 > 0:41:34It's got all the right elements for fish to hold out.
0:41:34 > 0:41:37- There's one.- Yeah. - There, there and there.- Yeah.
0:41:37 > 0:41:38- There's another one right under him. - Yeah.
0:41:38 > 0:41:42- And there's ones to our right. - So is that a small fish, big fish?
0:41:42 > 0:41:44- That looks more like a log.- Yeah.
0:41:44 > 0:41:47We've just been looking at the fish finder and we've seen a pattern -
0:41:47 > 0:41:50it's like there's a fish under the boat -
0:41:50 > 0:41:53so we're going to cast out and see if we can tempt him onto the hook.
0:41:55 > 0:41:57Is that...? Urg!
0:41:57 > 0:41:59You're going to need to get a little more distance on it.
0:41:59 > 0:42:02I'm going to pull this out and do that again. I just over-spooled.
0:42:06 > 0:42:09- Great cast.- Right, a bit more welly.
0:42:15 > 0:42:18We've got another one. Here we go.
0:42:18 > 0:42:19Oh!
0:42:19 > 0:42:20Wow!
0:42:22 > 0:42:24Blimey! All right.
0:42:27 > 0:42:28Jeez!
0:42:28 > 0:42:31Oh, oh, oh. Hit it, hit it, hit it! Lift up, lift up!
0:42:31 > 0:42:33BOTH: Wow!
0:42:33 > 0:42:36You've got to be joking!
0:42:36 > 0:42:37I think I've got Jaws on here.
0:42:37 > 0:42:40- You just want to lift the rod up high as you can first.- Yeah.
0:42:40 > 0:42:42And reel down towards the fish.
0:42:42 > 0:42:45Pull up...and I'm gonna pull down.
0:42:45 > 0:42:48So I can imagine, now, the kind of...
0:42:48 > 0:42:50adrenaline our anglers are going through.
0:42:50 > 0:42:54It's a strong fish. He might be snagged.
0:42:54 > 0:42:57Seems to have gone all tight. Yeah, he's out. He's moving.
0:42:57 > 0:43:00Because this fish is well over five feet,
0:43:00 > 0:43:02we can't actually bring it into the boat.
0:43:02 > 0:43:05We want to use our best handling practices,
0:43:05 > 0:43:08so we're going to take that fish to shore.
0:43:08 > 0:43:09He's up near the surface. Here we go.
0:43:09 > 0:43:13He's coming round the boat. It feels enormous.
0:43:13 > 0:43:16You need to get him in as close as you can.
0:43:16 > 0:43:19- Whoa.- Slowly lift him up to me.
0:43:19 > 0:43:22Wow! Great job.
0:43:22 > 0:43:24That will be the biggest fish I've ever caught, by far.
0:43:24 > 0:43:26- There you go.- Fantastic.
0:43:26 > 0:43:28Let's turn him round and release him, huh?
0:43:28 > 0:43:32Here it comes.
0:43:32 > 0:43:34Bye.
0:43:34 > 0:43:36HE LAUGHS
0:43:36 > 0:43:39- So we want it right there. - We got it.- Yeah.
0:43:39 > 0:43:41So, let me look at the number.
0:43:41 > 0:43:43So, it's a ten-digit number.
0:43:43 > 0:43:45That was one of the original tagged fish.
0:43:45 > 0:43:50It is probably over two metres for your very first fish.
0:43:50 > 0:43:52It is prehistoric, isn't it?
0:43:52 > 0:43:56It looks like something from another planet.
0:43:56 > 0:43:59Look at the back there. OK, fishy...
0:43:59 > 0:44:02Thank you very much for letting me see you.
0:44:07 > 0:44:09- Wow!- There you go. - And there he goes!
0:44:09 > 0:44:12- Wow. Thank you very much. And there he goes.- Yeah!
0:44:18 > 0:44:20Halfway through their supersized fishing,
0:44:20 > 0:44:23and the only one who hasn't caught is James.
0:44:23 > 0:44:26I haven't heard much action. I think, if he had caught a fish,
0:44:26 > 0:44:27we would have heard him shouting by now.
0:44:27 > 0:44:30I've moved round a couple of times, keep pushing fresh bait out,
0:44:30 > 0:44:33but nothing's happened.
0:44:33 > 0:44:34So it's that old thing...
0:44:34 > 0:44:37You might go down there, it might be worse and you waste a trip.
0:44:37 > 0:44:41You've got to take risks. I think I'm going to move.
0:44:41 > 0:44:42Got to move, Tyler.
0:44:44 > 0:44:47We left the other joint about 20-25 minutes ago,
0:44:47 > 0:44:51so it is a little bit frustrating because all this time we're kind of
0:44:51 > 0:44:54using up, just cruising around, and not fishing.
0:44:54 > 0:44:57But, you know, it's also a waste of time fishing in a spot where
0:44:57 > 0:44:59there's no fish. So, you've got kind of weight up.
0:44:59 > 0:45:00Same distance.
0:45:04 > 0:45:06Perfect. Casting has been excellent.
0:45:06 > 0:45:07Thank you very much, mate.
0:45:07 > 0:45:10I feel more positive about this place than down there,
0:45:10 > 0:45:13just for the sheer amount of fish, and there's no-one else here.
0:45:13 > 0:45:15Everything changes in the blink of an eye.
0:45:15 > 0:45:17On this vast stretch of river,
0:45:17 > 0:45:20Sam is the only one to stay in the same place,
0:45:20 > 0:45:22convinced it's the right place to be.
0:45:22 > 0:45:24They're getting bigger.
0:45:24 > 0:45:26First one was smaller, next one was bigger.
0:45:26 > 0:45:28Let's hope they keep going that way.
0:45:28 > 0:45:29It's the big fish challenge.
0:45:29 > 0:45:33You know what the old saying is - size matters.
0:45:33 > 0:45:35- Oh!- Oh, my God!
0:45:35 > 0:45:36That's the one.
0:45:36 > 0:45:40I've never experienced anything like this in my life before.
0:45:40 > 0:45:42Hold on tight, we're in for a ride.
0:45:42 > 0:45:45What a fish I've got on the end here.
0:45:45 > 0:45:47My arms are pumping already.
0:45:47 > 0:45:48Watch out.
0:45:56 > 0:45:59We're in. Well, that worked, didn't it?
0:45:59 > 0:46:01Wow! Wow!
0:46:01 > 0:46:05My heart is pounding. My muscles are...
0:46:05 > 0:46:08The power this fish has got is unreal.
0:46:08 > 0:46:10I've seen big fish before...
0:46:10 > 0:46:13But nothing like this. Look at the size of that!
0:46:13 > 0:46:17- Oh, my back is giving up. - HE GROANS
0:46:19 > 0:46:21I've never felt anything like this in my life.
0:46:21 > 0:46:23I need this fish to stay in the competition.
0:46:23 > 0:46:25Here it comes.
0:46:33 > 0:46:35INAUDIBLE
0:46:38 > 0:46:40- What happened?- Leader broke.
0:46:40 > 0:46:43Leader broke. It was a big, big, big, big, big fish.
0:46:43 > 0:46:47- We've lost that. Let's get back out and get another one.- Yeah.
0:46:47 > 0:46:49Get in! Oh!
0:46:49 > 0:46:50Oh, what a fish.
0:46:50 > 0:46:53What an amazing fish.
0:46:53 > 0:46:55I'm going to...switch hands.
0:46:56 > 0:47:01- Believe it or not, that fish does not have a tag in him.- It doesn't?
0:47:01 > 0:47:04Get a quick measurement of him.
0:47:04 > 0:47:08194 by 86, so we're going to put a tag in that fish.
0:47:08 > 0:47:11That has absolutely smashed the biggest fish I've ever caught.
0:47:11 > 0:47:14I'm just going to make sure that tag worked on him,
0:47:14 > 0:47:16then we can get him on his way.
0:47:17 > 0:47:19Perfect. Beautiful fish.
0:47:19 > 0:47:21How heavy is that, Tyler?
0:47:21 > 0:47:24I would guess 120, 130 pounds.
0:47:26 > 0:47:29Most amazing fish I've ever seen in my life.
0:47:29 > 0:47:30I feel dead emotional!
0:47:30 > 0:47:32HE SIGHS
0:47:32 > 0:47:37I'm physically drained. It's the most amazing experience.
0:47:37 > 0:47:40Best of all, we get to see the fish go back. It's been tagged.
0:47:40 > 0:47:44I'm absolutely speechless, I'm shattered, but that...
0:47:44 > 0:47:47Oh, my God. I'm lost for words.
0:47:47 > 0:47:49I feel like crying. It's...
0:47:51 > 0:47:54- I'm going to have to go. - HE LAUGHS
0:48:01 > 0:48:06There's under an hour left in the last challenge in the semifinal.
0:48:06 > 0:48:08I don't know if I've done enough to win it today.
0:48:08 > 0:48:11I've no idea what's going on with the other boats.
0:48:11 > 0:48:12Just got to keep fishing.
0:48:12 > 0:48:15I'm just thinking that, if their eyesight's not that great,
0:48:15 > 0:48:18then we're just going to put a few little cuts in here so it can
0:48:18 > 0:48:19make a bit of scent trail.
0:48:19 > 0:48:22The only way to get over something like that is to come out
0:48:22 > 0:48:24and hook another one. We've still got time.
0:48:29 > 0:48:33- SHE GROANS - I've got a big fish here.
0:48:33 > 0:48:35Yeah!
0:48:35 > 0:48:37Reel, reel, reel, reel!
0:48:37 > 0:48:40Oh, my God!
0:48:40 > 0:48:41Whoo!
0:48:41 > 0:48:44It's going to take the line. Look at it go.
0:48:44 > 0:48:47If I get this in, this will be the biggest fish I've ever, ever caught.
0:48:47 > 0:48:49I've got the shakes.
0:48:49 > 0:48:52Come on, calm down. Calm down.
0:48:52 > 0:48:54Are we ready for round two?
0:48:58 > 0:49:02So, I'm not close to breaking it, but...definitely getting tired.
0:49:02 > 0:49:04SHE SCREAMS
0:49:04 > 0:49:05Go on, Joey!
0:49:08 > 0:49:10Arms are pumping.
0:49:10 > 0:49:12I think I've caught the Loch Ness Monster.
0:49:12 > 0:49:15- What's happening?- He's stuck.
0:49:17 > 0:49:20I'm exhausted.
0:49:20 > 0:49:22- That's a big fish, that. - Very big fish, by the look of it.
0:49:22 > 0:49:24She's been in to the bank once to try and land it
0:49:24 > 0:49:27and now they're going back out into the river.
0:49:27 > 0:49:30You'd be surprised what reserves of strength she'll find.
0:49:30 > 0:49:34It is a fight of wills, isn't it? I like winning.
0:49:35 > 0:49:38She looked like she had a bit of a battle on her hands there.
0:49:38 > 0:49:41I hope she does catch a big fish, I just hope it's not as big as mine!
0:49:41 > 0:49:43Ten minutes to go.
0:49:46 > 0:49:49There we go, fish on!
0:49:49 > 0:49:52After playing that one earlier on, this is really hurting.
0:49:52 > 0:49:54He might have snagged me.
0:49:54 > 0:49:57Yeah, he's come off. Gutted.
0:49:57 > 0:50:00Oh, my goodness. There's a time when you think,
0:50:00 > 0:50:05"I wish I had never hooked this fish." I'm joking, of course.
0:50:05 > 0:50:09- Smaller than the last one but it's a big fish.- Yeah, a beauty.
0:50:11 > 0:50:13- Quick, dude, quick, dude, quick, dude.- Yeah.
0:50:13 > 0:50:15Come on!
0:50:15 > 0:50:16We've got him, don't worry.
0:50:16 > 0:50:18Still taking line, yeah.
0:50:18 > 0:50:21No, we're not. Oh!
0:50:21 > 0:50:23SHE LAUGHS
0:50:23 > 0:50:26- Oh, my God.- Nice fish.
0:50:26 > 0:50:28Every fish I caught today has been tagged,
0:50:28 > 0:50:31so it just shows that these fish are having a chance to
0:50:31 > 0:50:36stay in these rivers, breed and grow to this colossal size.
0:50:38 > 0:50:42SHE BREATHES HEAVILY
0:50:42 > 0:50:47You can just lead him out and let him go when he starts to kick.
0:50:48 > 0:50:50Give me... Give me some man love.
0:50:50 > 0:50:52HE LAUGHS
0:50:52 > 0:50:54Oh, God!
0:50:54 > 0:50:55Look at that hook.
0:50:55 > 0:50:57Bent the hook.
0:51:28 > 0:51:32The judges get detailed feedback on the semifinalists' performance.
0:51:38 > 0:51:41Another extraordinary day in Canada.
0:51:41 > 0:51:44I can sense the nerves. Let's get straight on with it.
0:51:44 > 0:51:48Sam, can you tell us the largest white sturgeon you caught today?
0:51:48 > 0:51:51The largest was as long as I am tall - it was 6"1'.
0:51:51 > 0:51:54You saw that there were fish moving in the area,
0:51:54 > 0:51:57and you decided to hang back and fish your own turf
0:51:57 > 0:52:00and it was a good decision.
0:52:00 > 0:52:04- Dan.- The largest I had measured was 6'11",
0:52:04 > 0:52:06but I did have one on the leader that gave way,
0:52:06 > 0:52:09and it swam off, and it was between seven and eight foot, that one.
0:52:09 > 0:52:13You gave yourself two seconds, and you got back in that boat and said,
0:52:13 > 0:52:15"OK, now we need to go find a bigger one."
0:52:15 > 0:52:18And, sure enough, we come up the river,
0:52:18 > 0:52:21there you are drifting with another big fish.
0:52:21 > 0:52:24- James.- Biggest fish today was 6'4".
0:52:24 > 0:52:26You must be excited. That's a big fish!
0:52:26 > 0:52:27Still got a bad back, mate.
0:52:27 > 0:52:30Handling of the tackle, excellent.
0:52:30 > 0:52:32Casting, excellent.
0:52:32 > 0:52:33A decent day.
0:52:33 > 0:52:35And last but not least, Jo.
0:52:35 > 0:52:38Well, actually, the largest one I caught was only 83cm.
0:52:38 > 0:52:40I had the chance to catch a monster
0:52:40 > 0:52:42and I'm pretty sure it was twice the size of me...
0:52:44 > 0:52:47But it broke off. It was epic.
0:52:47 > 0:52:49Jo, you did a great job.
0:52:49 > 0:52:53We talked to the guide. He said it was not your fault at all,
0:52:53 > 0:52:55so I want you to understand that.
0:52:55 > 0:52:57Obviously...
0:52:57 > 0:52:59We needed you to land that fish.
0:52:59 > 0:53:01You didn't see, but one just came up behind you, a huge one.
0:53:01 > 0:53:03I think it was your one coming up to say hello.
0:53:03 > 0:53:06You had a few problems casting with the equipment,
0:53:06 > 0:53:10a couple of backlashes on the reel, that sort of thing.
0:53:10 > 0:53:12I mean, it was a cruel twist of fate,
0:53:12 > 0:53:15but you carried on and you dug in.
0:53:15 > 0:53:19Well, Dan, with a 6'11" white sturgeon,
0:53:19 > 0:53:22you are the undisputable winner.
0:53:22 > 0:53:24Well done, Dan. Very good.
0:53:24 > 0:53:28The judges now have a really tough decision to make
0:53:28 > 0:53:29about who is going through.
0:53:29 > 0:53:33Actually, this is such a difficult decision...
0:53:33 > 0:53:36I think we need to sleep on it. Sorry.
0:53:36 > 0:53:37Well done on the one you caught.
0:53:37 > 0:53:40When I saw the head come out on the...
0:53:40 > 0:53:41Monster fish.
0:53:41 > 0:53:42Something else, aren't they?
0:53:46 > 0:53:49Having had all night to wonder what the judges will decide,
0:53:49 > 0:53:53all the anglers can do is await their fate.
0:53:53 > 0:53:56It's killing, just waiting around and hanging about and, you know...
0:53:56 > 0:53:57I just want to know.
0:53:57 > 0:54:00I'm sure the judges are going through all our performances
0:54:00 > 0:54:02with a fine-tooth comb, I would imagine.
0:54:02 > 0:54:05They're going to be talking about all the little mistakes
0:54:05 > 0:54:08and stuff that we didn't even notice we made.
0:54:08 > 0:54:11It's horrible. I'm getting a lump in my throat.
0:54:16 > 0:54:18So, did you get much sleep last night?
0:54:18 > 0:54:19Or have you been worrying about this?
0:54:19 > 0:54:22I mean, it's a tough decision.
0:54:22 > 0:54:24Has it always been this tough for you guys?
0:54:24 > 0:54:26- I think this is the closest.- By far.
0:54:26 > 0:54:29The stakes are higher cos it's the semifinal,
0:54:29 > 0:54:31so you are looking for that person that is looking
0:54:31 > 0:54:33more like the complete package.
0:54:33 > 0:54:36I think this has been Dan's strongest country.
0:54:36 > 0:54:40In the salmon event, really focused and then, I thought,
0:54:40 > 0:54:42yesterday he was pretty immense.
0:54:42 > 0:54:47To me, it's going to be hard to send him home after that performance.
0:54:47 > 0:54:50- Sam.- He came out charging in the first challenge, won it.
0:54:50 > 0:54:52It just seemed to me like he was able to pick up
0:54:52 > 0:54:54most of what was thrown at him.
0:54:54 > 0:54:56What stands out is consistency.
0:54:56 > 0:54:59It's hitting the mark, doing what's required each time.
0:54:59 > 0:55:04In James' case, I see a guy with pure technique, a quick learner.
0:55:04 > 0:55:08He came last in the first one, but he bounced back.
0:55:08 > 0:55:10He came second in the next two.
0:55:10 > 0:55:12He could have won that last challenge -
0:55:12 > 0:55:14he was only a few inches away.
0:55:14 > 0:55:17In Jo's case, she won the middle challenge.
0:55:17 > 0:55:20Now, watching Jo fly-fishing that day,
0:55:20 > 0:55:23actually I think there were people who cast a better line,
0:55:23 > 0:55:24but she caught the fish.
0:55:24 > 0:55:27In the last challenge, obviously, came last.
0:55:27 > 0:55:31For me, what puts Jo more in the frame isn't the loss of that fish -
0:55:31 > 0:55:33it's a couple of other small technical things
0:55:33 > 0:55:36the guide brought out about not casting...
0:55:36 > 0:55:39That's more of an error than the big fish thing.
0:55:39 > 0:55:42The debate comes down to James and Jo.
0:55:42 > 0:55:46Given how close this is, the only thing that can separate them
0:55:46 > 0:55:49is an appraisal of previous performance.
0:55:49 > 0:55:53Where Jo's been particularly strong is in some of the more
0:55:53 > 0:55:54local-type challengers,
0:55:54 > 0:55:57whereas, on the rod and line, she hasn't been quite as strong.
0:55:57 > 0:56:01James, up until the salmon thing, he was quite consistent,
0:56:01 > 0:56:05but I can see weaknesses in both games.
0:56:05 > 0:56:08Who is the better angler...
0:56:09 > 0:56:11..of those two?
0:56:20 > 0:56:24Sorry for keeping this lingering.
0:56:24 > 0:56:26It's so close.
0:56:29 > 0:56:32In fact, it's been so close they've had to go back to the original
0:56:32 > 0:56:38spirit of this competition - the search for the complete angler.
0:56:38 > 0:56:44And our judges have singled out the two who are in danger of leaving -
0:56:44 > 0:56:47James and Jo.
0:56:49 > 0:56:52The judges have decided...
0:56:53 > 0:56:55..that the angler who's going home...
0:57:02 > 0:57:04..is Jo.
0:57:04 > 0:57:05I'm so sorry, Jo.
0:57:08 > 0:57:11- Now we know it.- You have the heart of a lion, my darling.
0:57:16 > 0:57:18No, I'm good. I'm good.
0:57:21 > 0:57:25To get within reaching distance of the final, it's pretty special.
0:57:25 > 0:57:26It's a pretty big achievement,
0:57:26 > 0:57:28so...I'll take that.
0:57:28 > 0:57:30Are you OK?
0:57:30 > 0:57:32HE SIGHS
0:57:32 > 0:57:33I'm just really, really...
0:57:33 > 0:57:36I feel drained, emotionally drained.
0:57:36 > 0:57:38HE LAUGHS
0:57:45 > 0:57:48Honestly!
0:57:48 > 0:57:51'Getting to the final is a big thing. It's a big thing.
0:57:51 > 0:57:54'You know, and being the only Welshman.'
0:57:54 > 0:57:56Yeah, chuffed to bits.
0:57:59 > 0:58:01I think it's going to be a really close call next week.
0:58:01 > 0:58:04We're all, kind of, pretty evenly balanced at this stage, I would say,
0:58:04 > 0:58:07but we've all got it to play for in the final.
0:58:07 > 0:58:10We're going to Zambia? Are you kidding me?
0:58:10 > 0:58:11Next time...
0:58:11 > 0:58:13Hello, Mr Elephant.
0:58:13 > 0:58:14Wow! Look at the size of him!
0:58:14 > 0:58:15..it's the final.
0:58:15 > 0:58:17I'm a croc magnet.
0:58:17 > 0:58:20You've got to hold your nerve, that's what it's about in this game.
0:58:20 > 0:58:21The thing to do is not to panic.
0:58:21 > 0:58:23But which one of them...
0:58:23 > 0:58:24HE GROANS
0:58:24 > 0:58:26..will be crowned...
0:58:26 > 0:58:28Sounds like playing with fire, that does.
0:58:28 > 0:58:29..the complete angler?
0:58:29 > 0:58:31Never give up.
0:58:31 > 0:58:34HE GROANS
