0:00:03 > 0:00:06Eight anglers travelled the globe...

0:00:06 > 0:00:08- Is he stuck?- Has he got it?

0:00:08 > 0:00:11Wow! This place is nuts.

0:00:11 > 0:00:16..in search of the world's most extraordinary fish.

0:00:16 > 0:00:18- I think I've got Jaws on here.- Wow!

0:00:18 > 0:00:21And only three have made it to the final.

0:00:21 > 0:00:23It's like a boyhood dream being here, man.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25One thing I've always wanted to do.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28My, my! Check that out.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31I've never experienced anything like this in my life before.

0:00:31 > 0:00:34Which will test everything they've learned...

0:00:34 > 0:00:36The conditions are shocking!

0:00:36 > 0:00:40It's days like this that make you realise your true love of fishing.

0:00:40 > 0:00:44It is definitely as hot as it looks. I'm not going to lie, it's brutal.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47Now it's their last destination,

0:00:47 > 0:00:51and their final frontier - Zambia.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09Zambia in southern Africa.

0:01:12 > 0:01:14This is Africa at its wildest.

0:01:16 > 0:01:23Local people live side-by-side with dangerous animals on land

0:01:23 > 0:01:26and in the river.

0:01:26 > 0:01:30The Zambezi stretches over 1,500 miles.

0:01:30 > 0:01:36Gentle rapids give way to the thundering waters of Victoria Falls.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39The Zambezi is amazing. It's one of the great rivers of the world.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43It's absolutely huge. There are hippos all over the place.

0:01:43 > 0:01:46There's elephants wandering around on the banks

0:01:46 > 0:01:49but you've got to put all that aside, put it out of your mind,

0:01:49 > 0:01:52because in the water there are some magnificent fish,

0:01:52 > 0:01:56and some of them have got really, really sharp teeth.

0:01:56 > 0:02:00We're down to the last three. It's going to be tough

0:02:00 > 0:02:03but they've got to concentrate on what they have learned,

0:02:03 > 0:02:07put it to good use, because there can only be one winner.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11- This is outstanding, boys. Look at where we are, Jimbo!- I know, mate.

0:02:11 > 0:02:16For the final, Matt will be joined by Charles Tembo,

0:02:16 > 0:02:18an experienced sport fishing guide

0:02:18 > 0:02:22who's grown up fishing on the banks of this immense river.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26I started fishing when I was about six years old.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28It's going to be tough.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31I'm just looking forward to see them using their skills

0:02:31 > 0:02:35to face the challenge they are going to find on the river.

0:02:35 > 0:02:39Oh, ho-ho! This place is just amazing, man.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41Being in the final is totally amazing.

0:02:41 > 0:02:45You need to pinch yourself. Your head's going 100mph, thinking,

0:02:45 > 0:02:48"What am I going to be catching? What am I going to be seeing?"

0:02:48 > 0:02:50I'm a bit overwhelmed, to be honest!

0:02:50 > 0:02:55The fish here have adapted to survive in these dangerous waters.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58The anglers have just one week to prove they have the courage

0:02:58 > 0:03:01and the skills to do the same.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04For me, fishing is very much a mental challenge

0:03:04 > 0:03:07as much as a skill-based, physical challenge,

0:03:07 > 0:03:10and now I've actually got a chance of becoming the champ,

0:03:10 > 0:03:12being here, I'm going to take that chance

0:03:12 > 0:03:14and give it a really good shot this week.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17I never thought I'd see the final but here I am,

0:03:17 > 0:03:20we're all in with an equal chance of winning it

0:03:20 > 0:03:24and hey, why can't it be me? Why can't it be that netsman from Wales?

0:03:34 > 0:03:36Welcome to the final.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39Well done, guys. You have come a long way.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41Six countries, four continents

0:03:41 > 0:03:45and it all comes down to this last expedition.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48Now, for the first part of this journey

0:03:48 > 0:03:51- you're after the mighty vundu catfish.- Yes!

0:03:51 > 0:03:57Like all catfish species, vundu are mainly caught on bait.

0:03:57 > 0:04:03Vundu can grow up to 100 pounds and it's going to fight quite a lot

0:04:03 > 0:04:05and you have to be strong enough to bring it in.

0:04:05 > 0:04:09We are looking for the fisherman to catch the biggest vundu.

0:04:09 > 0:04:11- Are you ready for it?- Yeah.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13- Go fish.- Cheers, guys. - Good luck.- Cheers.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23- Good luck, mate.- Good luck, mate.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25- Good luck, Danny boy. - Good luck, son.

0:04:25 > 0:04:29The anglers have just six hours with a guide,

0:04:29 > 0:04:31who will be the judges' eyes and ears

0:04:31 > 0:04:35as they explore this intimidating stretch of river.

0:04:35 > 0:04:37- The adventure starts now.- Ho-ho!

0:04:42 > 0:04:46The Zambezi runs through six different countries

0:04:46 > 0:04:49before spilling into the Indian Ocean.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53The anglers are fishing in the Lower Zambezi National Park,

0:04:53 > 0:04:56so they will be releasing everything they catch.

0:04:56 > 0:05:01This part of the river is one of Africa's unspoiled wildernesses

0:05:01 > 0:05:03and underneath the surface

0:05:03 > 0:05:08this murky river is home to a vast number of fish,

0:05:08 > 0:05:10including the vundu catfish.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14Charles, we've obviously got quite a big river here.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17- Where are they going to find these catfish?- Normally with the catfish

0:05:17 > 0:05:19we tend to fish in non-moving water,

0:05:19 > 0:05:22so it's just a matter of reading the water.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25How are they going to know they've got a vundu on their line?

0:05:25 > 0:05:28A vundu won't even try to nibble on a bait.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31A vundu will just grab it one time and start moving.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34There's a lot of distractions for our anglers here.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37- Their senses are going to be in overdrive.- We have crocodiles,

0:05:37 > 0:05:38we have hippos as well on the river.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40This is so fascinating, you know,

0:05:40 > 0:05:41because where we come from,

0:05:41 > 0:05:44the worst thing that can happen on a bad fishing trip

0:05:44 > 0:05:45is that you get really wet,

0:05:45 > 0:05:49but the chances of getting eaten by a crocodile in Dudley or something

0:05:49 > 0:05:51are pretty slim.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59It's so quiet here. Everywhere we've been there's been boats

0:05:59 > 0:06:02whizzing round or other things, planes going over. It's so...

0:06:02 > 0:06:05You've just got to remember what's in the water.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08Everyone's a novice to this river and this species,

0:06:08 > 0:06:09but Sam was absolutely buzzing

0:06:09 > 0:06:12when he heard about what we're fishing for today.

0:06:12 > 0:06:14He is a very clever, clever man

0:06:14 > 0:06:17and he knows a lot about species and locations.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20From my gut instinct, thinking we're going to be fishing for vundu,

0:06:20 > 0:06:23a catfish, I would be looking for somewhere off the main current,

0:06:23 > 0:06:24somewhere the water's a bit slower.

0:06:24 > 0:06:26They're lazy fish at the end of the day, aren't they?

0:06:26 > 0:06:29- They don't want to expend energy unless they have to.- Yeah, for sure.

0:06:29 > 0:06:34Water moves fast on the outside of bends, and slower on the inside.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37Obstructions in the water

0:06:37 > 0:06:40also distort the speed and direction of the current,

0:06:40 > 0:06:43creating seams or creases.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46It's here, where fish find shelter,

0:06:46 > 0:06:49that the fishermen will do best to cast their bait.

0:06:51 > 0:06:52You can see there's a current line

0:06:52 > 0:06:55coming off the end of this bank here, the current obviously

0:06:55 > 0:06:58hits the bank and you can visually see it looking down there,

0:06:58 > 0:06:59there's a line in the water.

0:06:59 > 0:07:02You got the slower water to the right-hand side of it

0:07:02 > 0:07:03and the faster water to the left,

0:07:03 > 0:07:06and it's these current lines and seams which are where the fish sit.

0:07:06 > 0:07:08It's like the highway, you know,

0:07:08 > 0:07:10they know they can sit just off the main highway,

0:07:10 > 0:07:12everything else is going past them.

0:07:12 > 0:07:14When they want to, they can dive in to feed.

0:07:14 > 0:07:16With a background in course and lure fishing,

0:07:16 > 0:07:20Sam has consistently done well in the rod and line challenges.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23My legs are shaking, my heart is pounding.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25Dorado! Dorado!

0:07:25 > 0:07:26Look at that!

0:07:26 > 0:07:29Sam has been fishing since he was a young boy,

0:07:29 > 0:07:32having been taught to fish by his grandparents.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35- Oh, Sam, I didn't know you'd still got this.- Yeah, there you go.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37That belonged to my father.

0:07:37 > 0:07:39It's very, very thrilling to us...

0:07:39 > 0:07:42Well, I know it was to my husband, and to me, to think that

0:07:42 > 0:07:45he's still doing something that we started him off on.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47Oh, I'm so proud.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50You couldn't understand...

0:07:50 > 0:07:51Sorry...

0:07:58 > 0:08:00He's my boy.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03It looks quite sedentary and sedate, what we're doing, which it is,

0:08:03 > 0:08:06but I can assure you, my brain is ticking over,

0:08:06 > 0:08:11constantly watching the water, thinking about what I'm doing.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14To make the most of their time, they need to be proactive,

0:08:14 > 0:08:18seeking out the very best places to fish...

0:08:18 > 0:08:20The big bait has been out for a long time.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23- I think it's time we had a little wander.- I'd agree with that.

0:08:23 > 0:08:24Go and have a look somewhere.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26I would definitely try to find another spot.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30- ..and manage two different rods at once.- There was a take there.

0:08:32 > 0:08:33But the fish dropped it.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36That's the problem with having two rods and too much going on,

0:08:36 > 0:08:37you've got to concentrate.

0:08:43 > 0:08:44Unless it was a hippo.

0:08:49 > 0:08:51The thing to do is not to panic.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54It's a competition but you've got to enjoy it.

0:08:54 > 0:08:56That's what fishing is about.

0:08:56 > 0:08:59Throughout the expedition, James has shown technical skill

0:08:59 > 0:09:02and a real passion for all kinds of fishing.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04Boyhood dream come true.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06And all kinds of fish.

0:09:06 > 0:09:10That's the most amazing fish I've ever seen.

0:09:10 > 0:09:12But there is no fishing like home,

0:09:12 > 0:09:15where he is a proud member of the local fishing club

0:09:15 > 0:09:17that he joined as a boy.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19I've known James for at least 20 years now.

0:09:19 > 0:09:23He joined the club as a junior. He was coming into my shop

0:09:23 > 0:09:25and asking me, "Oh, I've got this and I was doing this."

0:09:25 > 0:09:27I just gave him a little bit of advice

0:09:27 > 0:09:29and we'd be standing like idiots in the shop

0:09:29 > 0:09:32pretending we were casting rods and he just picks it up naturally.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35He's naturally gifted that way. If James wins, I'll be very proud

0:09:35 > 0:09:37and I know he's got it in him to do it.

0:09:37 > 0:09:38He could definitely do it without a doubt.

0:09:41 > 0:09:45Two hours in, and no fish have been caught.

0:09:45 > 0:09:47HIPPO GRUNTS

0:09:47 > 0:09:49I know, my thoughts exactly.

0:09:50 > 0:09:52Yeah, you've got to be patient.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55Hold your nerve, that's what it's about in this game.

0:09:55 > 0:09:59But holding their nerve isn't always that easy.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02I wanted to go over there because you could see feeding birds,

0:10:02 > 0:10:04both fish-eating birds. The only problem is that

0:10:04 > 0:10:07Mr Crocodile has now gone and sat in between those.

0:10:07 > 0:10:0980% of the crocodile's diet is fish,

0:10:09 > 0:10:12so that croc has just chased off our fish.

0:10:12 > 0:10:14The best thing to do is move from here

0:10:14 > 0:10:16and then I can set the rod up over the other side.

0:10:17 > 0:10:21We're off. We've got a good one. Let's get away from this snag.

0:10:21 > 0:10:23We've got some action. Fantastic.

0:10:28 > 0:10:29We've got a catfish!

0:10:30 > 0:10:32Here we go.

0:10:34 > 0:10:35Look at that.

0:10:36 > 0:10:39He's in the net. Fantastic! We've got a catfish.

0:10:39 > 0:10:43There we go. Vundu catfish.

0:10:43 > 0:10:44Quite a bizarre-looking fish.

0:10:44 > 0:10:47Very, very ugly, but all the same,

0:10:47 > 0:10:49it's the first vundu of the day so I'm chuffed to bits with that.

0:10:49 > 0:10:52I think we'll get this one back, then try and catch another one,

0:10:52 > 0:10:55maybe go for Plan C by that other snag.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57OK. There you go.

0:10:57 > 0:10:59Ha-ha! Fantastic!

0:11:01 > 0:11:05Just over an hour left to catch the biggest vundu of the day.

0:11:06 > 0:11:10And Dan is still competing with the locals.

0:11:10 > 0:11:12Now, that croc has just been up and sunned itself here.

0:11:12 > 0:11:17I think it's time for us to move on to another patch. I'm a croc magnet.

0:11:17 > 0:11:21Dan comes from a traditional net-fishing background

0:11:21 > 0:11:24and has the least experience with rod and line,

0:11:24 > 0:11:28but he's managed to catch some of the biggest fish of the competition,

0:11:28 > 0:11:30often in the final moments.

0:11:30 > 0:11:34I've seen big fish before, but nothing like this.

0:11:34 > 0:11:36This is one of the greatest achievements of my life.

0:11:36 > 0:11:41After my kids and my wife, you know, this is one of the greatest moments.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44I think fishing now has become even more a part of his life.

0:11:44 > 0:11:46He's learnt so much in the process.

0:11:46 > 0:11:49I'm really proud of Dan, I really am.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52He's done so well. Yeah, really proud.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54I'm slimming my bait down,

0:11:54 > 0:11:57because it might be that I'm fishing with too big a bait.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00It's a lot more open here but there's a nice patch of quiet water

0:12:00 > 0:12:03over there, which my bait is going to go into straightaway.

0:12:06 > 0:12:07Had a bite?

0:12:14 > 0:12:16Definitely got one here.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19Come on, my man, get this catfish into the net.

0:12:19 > 0:12:23It's not the biggest catfish in the world but it's a catfish.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26Proud moment, caught a vundu, my biggest catfish to date.

0:12:26 > 0:12:28I'm going to put him back in the water now,

0:12:28 > 0:12:30- so just let him go back in?- Yeah.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32And off he goes.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34If there's one thing I've learned

0:12:34 > 0:12:38through my whole time on this adventure, it's never give up.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41How many times have you seen me catch a fish late on in the day?

0:12:41 > 0:12:44How do you think you'd sum up our fishermen?

0:12:44 > 0:12:46Heart, mind and soul for me.

0:12:46 > 0:12:49I look at Dan, he's got a latent talent

0:12:49 > 0:12:52and now he's starting to develop it,

0:12:52 > 0:12:55so fishing's in his soul, if you like.

0:12:55 > 0:12:57Then I look at someone like James.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00He's about heart, he's really loved this experience.

0:13:00 > 0:13:05Wow, look at the size of him! Ho-ho! Prehistoric!

0:13:05 > 0:13:06Let's get away from him!

0:13:06 > 0:13:09Different environments, types of fish, techniques,

0:13:09 > 0:13:11and he's absolutely loving it.

0:13:11 > 0:13:14- Could we have a go near, guys? - There's another croc there.

0:13:14 > 0:13:15Oh, crocodiles.

0:13:15 > 0:13:19The mind part is Sam. Sam is very technical.

0:13:19 > 0:13:21This looks like it's worth a drop.

0:13:21 > 0:13:23Yeah, there's a great big snag in the river here,

0:13:23 > 0:13:26but they like hanging out in the snags, the vundu.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28That sounds like playing with fire, that does.

0:13:28 > 0:13:32He does as much research as he can, so he does everything by the book.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34Let's see what we can do.

0:13:34 > 0:13:38And then there's the element of luck and whichever way you hang it...

0:13:38 > 0:13:41- Oh, oh!- Yeah, yeah, that's a bite.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44I think you've missed your chance.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47That's because... I told you not to talk to me now, Matt!

0:13:47 > 0:13:50- How many times did I tell you? - Yeah.- I can't multitask.

0:13:50 > 0:13:53I'm so sorry, I just thought that you were now so experienced

0:13:53 > 0:13:57- that a moment like that would not... - Do you know how big that fish was?

0:13:59 > 0:14:01Just 30 minutes left.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08Just trying a bit above that tree and I'm not going to cast,

0:14:08 > 0:14:11we're just going to throw it in, cos that looks like another good spot.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14James is the only finalist not to have caught a vundu...

0:14:14 > 0:14:17We need to catch one today. I need to catch one today.

0:14:21 > 0:14:23There's nothing going on here at all.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26It looked like a fantastic spot but nothing.

0:14:26 > 0:14:30..whilst Dan and Sam have landed one each.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33Coming back to the spot we had some success at earlier.

0:14:33 > 0:14:35What did we have? One fish and two good bites,

0:14:35 > 0:14:38so come back here to see if there's still a few more vundu at home.

0:14:38 > 0:14:41Everyone is desperate to catch the biggest of the day.

0:14:41 > 0:14:43I really want to catch a bigger one.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46Really, really, really do want to catch a bigger one!

0:14:46 > 0:14:50This is proper shaded, we've got a lovely little back area here.

0:14:50 > 0:14:53I'm going to stick the smaller rod just out there

0:14:53 > 0:14:55where there's hardly any flow at all

0:14:55 > 0:14:57and we're going to catch a big catfish.

0:14:57 > 0:15:00See, this is where we were getting the bites earlier, you know,

0:15:00 > 0:15:01where there's a lot of reeds,

0:15:01 > 0:15:05and it just seems, I don't know, safer or...

0:15:05 > 0:15:08- Oh, fast, fast! - Dodging hippos for fun.

0:15:09 > 0:15:13Today has been tough. My brain has been going overtime.

0:15:13 > 0:15:16You've got the pressure of the competition and the time as well.

0:15:16 > 0:15:18It's not like a fishing holiday.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21When this is all over, I'm booking myself a fishing holiday!

0:15:21 > 0:15:24It's the last few minutes, you are on edge, you go,

0:15:24 > 0:15:25"I don't want to miss this!"

0:15:25 > 0:15:30That's it, time up, everyone! Rods up.

0:15:30 > 0:15:33HE SIGHS

0:15:45 > 0:15:49Hey, guys. You look a bit like three naughty schoolboys!

0:15:49 > 0:15:50That's how we feel!

0:15:50 > 0:15:53Matt, how do you think they did as a group?

0:15:53 > 0:15:55Generally, I think you did fairly well.

0:15:55 > 0:15:59I would like to have seen a few more vundu catfish caught,

0:15:59 > 0:16:03- if I'm brutally honest.- Charles, how do you think Sam got on today?

0:16:03 > 0:16:04Sam, for the fishing, was great.

0:16:04 > 0:16:08Your choosing of the spot, it was perfect.

0:16:08 > 0:16:12You came out with a very nice vundu catfish that weighed 17.5 pounds.

0:16:12 > 0:16:16There was one moment that summed up for me that you were at home.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19You flicked a bait close to the bank and it was very precise

0:16:19 > 0:16:22and very deft, and it showed that you were totally comfortable

0:16:22 > 0:16:25- with the tackle that you were using. Well done.- Thanks, Matt.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28I think, James, the fishing went fairly well.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30You certainly selected some sensible spots.

0:16:30 > 0:16:32- Unfortunately, you didn't catch a vundu.- No.

0:16:32 > 0:16:35One thing which I also noticed is that his cast,

0:16:35 > 0:16:40he wasn't too far away, then on that, maybe you have to improve.

0:16:40 > 0:16:44- On to Dan.- Yeah, I thought it was an interesting performance from you.

0:16:44 > 0:16:46Certainly, your choice of spots

0:16:46 > 0:16:50instinctively was pretty good. You genuinely embraced the challenge.

0:16:50 > 0:16:53You caught a vundu that weighed five pounds.

0:16:53 > 0:16:55It wasn't an enormous vundu, but nonetheless,

0:16:55 > 0:16:57it was the target species.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59So, I thought it was a good performance, Dan.

0:16:59 > 0:17:01Thank you very much.

0:17:01 > 0:17:03Well, as you probably worked out,

0:17:03 > 0:17:07- the winner of today's fishing expedition is Sam.- Well done, buddy.

0:17:07 > 0:17:09- Congratulations, Sam. - Thank you so much.

0:17:09 > 0:17:12Because this is the final, you don't get to choose a team for tomorrow.

0:17:12 > 0:17:16From now on, it's each man for himself.

0:17:16 > 0:17:20Get some sleep after that - early start tomorrow. Shall we go?

0:17:21 > 0:17:23Well done.

0:17:29 > 0:17:31To start like that in the final

0:17:31 > 0:17:34and have comments like that, pretty cool.

0:17:34 > 0:17:35It's been a good day.

0:17:35 > 0:17:37It's nice not to finish bottom of the pile.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39It's going to be an interesting couple of days,

0:17:39 > 0:17:41I'm looking forward to it.

0:17:42 > 0:17:46I know it's irritating, but all you can do is take each day as it

0:17:46 > 0:17:48comes and see what tomorrow brings.

0:17:58 > 0:18:01It's an early start for the anglers,

0:18:01 > 0:18:04as they journey an hour and a half upriver

0:18:04 > 0:18:07to the area where Charles grew up.

0:18:07 > 0:18:11This village is outside the National Park.

0:18:11 > 0:18:16For the local people, the Zambezi is a powerful lifeline -

0:18:16 > 0:18:22for cooking, cleaning, watering crops and, of course, catching fish.

0:18:22 > 0:18:24But with it comes risks.

0:18:24 > 0:18:26The locals are used to facing

0:18:26 > 0:18:30the dangers of this river on a daily basis.

0:18:30 > 0:18:32Women tend to fish from the banks,

0:18:32 > 0:18:34where the men use these mokoro canoes.

0:18:34 > 0:18:37I'm not going on one of them!

0:18:37 > 0:18:40There is not a chance in hell I'm going on one of them!

0:18:40 > 0:18:43That's exactly what you're going on, I'm sure of it.

0:18:48 > 0:18:50I'm nervous.

0:18:50 > 0:18:53I just don't want to be in any little boat in that water, like!

0:18:53 > 0:18:55- Morning. ALL:- Morning.

0:18:55 > 0:18:57Welcome to the village.

0:18:57 > 0:19:00On the way down the Zambezi this morning,

0:19:00 > 0:19:02I'm sure you saw plenty of locals.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05For them, they have to face the dangers of this river

0:19:05 > 0:19:08on a daily basis, and today, you will be braving it,

0:19:08 > 0:19:12too, as you join the locals in their dugout mokoro canoes.

0:19:12 > 0:19:15You are going to do the traditional way of fishing.

0:19:15 > 0:19:19So, you are going to fish with the long bamboo fishing rod.

0:19:19 > 0:19:23There is something very pure about fishing with a pole

0:19:23 > 0:19:27and a simple line, and I think this challenge is going to tell us a lot.

0:19:27 > 0:19:32The angler who brings back the most fish is the winner. Ready for it?

0:19:32 > 0:19:34- Yep.- Please stay in the boats!

0:19:34 > 0:19:36THEY CHUCKLE

0:19:36 > 0:19:38- Go fish!- Good luck, guys.

0:19:39 > 0:19:41The one thing I don't want to do!

0:19:48 > 0:19:50- Let's go!- Good luck, mate.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53- That croc there, watch him, James! - Whoa!

0:19:53 > 0:19:56Stripped of all the modern fishing kit

0:19:56 > 0:20:00that they are used to, the finalists have just an hour and a half

0:20:00 > 0:20:03- to catch as many fish as they can. - Are you stable?

0:20:03 > 0:20:05Yeah, I'm OK.

0:20:05 > 0:20:08Fishing here is a survival skill.

0:20:08 > 0:20:12The locals must learn to catch fish to feed their families.

0:20:12 > 0:20:14So, the bigger, the better.

0:20:14 > 0:20:17But the bigger fish are tough to catch and land

0:20:17 > 0:20:19on such light equipment.

0:20:19 > 0:20:21Right, mate, let's catch some fish.

0:20:21 > 0:20:23The set-up we've got here is about as simple as you could

0:20:23 > 0:20:28possibly get, it's very Huckleberry Finn-esque, this sort of fishing.

0:20:28 > 0:20:33When you get back to the basics of fishing, with a pole and line, that

0:20:33 > 0:20:39is quintessentially the most pure form of sport fishing that there is.

0:20:39 > 0:20:42I grew up in this area, you know, most local people go to the river

0:20:42 > 0:20:47and try to fish, like, chessa, kupi and even tiger fish.

0:20:47 > 0:20:50It would be more interesting to see them fishing in our local

0:20:50 > 0:20:52tradition type of fishing.

0:20:54 > 0:20:57A fishing line is attached to a simple branch or pole.

0:20:57 > 0:20:59A float is made from the pith of a reed,

0:20:59 > 0:21:01which can be moved

0:21:01 > 0:21:02up and down the line

0:21:02 > 0:21:04to set the bait at a chosen depth.

0:21:04 > 0:21:06Sitting on the surface of the water,

0:21:06 > 0:21:09it will dip to indicate a bite from below.

0:21:09 > 0:21:11It's all quite close quarters,

0:21:11 > 0:21:13but a couple of metres can make a hell of a difference.

0:21:13 > 0:21:15The main thing with this sort of fishing is,

0:21:15 > 0:21:17just be patient, wait and watch.

0:21:17 > 0:21:20As soon as that float goes down, strike into the fish.

0:21:20 > 0:21:23The float is just an indicator to tell you you've got a bite,

0:21:23 > 0:21:25otherwise you are fishing blind, totally.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28You can't see the fish - they are definitely there.

0:21:30 > 0:21:32Well, deep down, you hope they are there!

0:21:32 > 0:21:34HE CHUCKLES

0:21:34 > 0:21:36The judges are looking for pure fishing skills -

0:21:36 > 0:21:41watercraft, delicate presentation of the bait and stealth.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43You have to be quiet, though. Ssh!

0:21:43 > 0:21:49Important, yeah? Come on, fish! Oh, little twitch, did you see that?

0:21:49 > 0:21:50Tch-tch!

0:21:52 > 0:21:54- Lots of small fish down there. - Smaller.

0:21:54 > 0:21:58Yeah. Come on, fish!

0:21:58 > 0:22:00Aha! That's weed.

0:22:00 > 0:22:02That's the problem with fishing here,

0:22:02 > 0:22:04you're fishing in a lot of weed.

0:22:04 > 0:22:07But that's where the fish are feeding and hiding.

0:22:07 > 0:22:11Just changing spots, because it was a little bit shallow there.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14- Oh, he's got one.- Yes!

0:22:17 > 0:22:20Coming through. How are we getting on, Dan?

0:22:20 > 0:22:23- Not as good as him over there. - Any bites?- No, just small ones.

0:22:23 > 0:22:24Just mosquitoes!

0:22:25 > 0:22:29Half an hour gone and only Sam has caught a fish.

0:22:29 > 0:22:34Well, Ben is out there fishing, look, paddling down in his canoe.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37In the history of British seamanship,

0:22:37 > 0:22:40you've got people like Sir Francis Drake, Horatio Nelson...

0:22:40 > 0:22:46- and there he is, the latest, Admiral Fogle!- Exactly.- I can hear that!

0:22:46 > 0:22:48THEY CHUCKLE

0:22:48 > 0:22:52Just waiting for that flow to go under.

0:22:52 > 0:22:53Ah!

0:22:53 > 0:22:56Tried to bite there, didn't get a good hold, though.

0:22:58 > 0:22:59Oh!

0:23:00 > 0:23:02They're tormenting me!

0:23:02 > 0:23:06Sometimes, just twitch the rod very slightly and the worm moves in

0:23:06 > 0:23:08the water and it gives it a kick and sometimes that can induce a bite.

0:23:08 > 0:23:11Oh! Oh-ho-ho! Missed that one!

0:23:11 > 0:23:15- Oh, yes! That's a fish!- Whoo!

0:23:16 > 0:23:20- That's a tiger! - Tiger fish.- Good job!

0:23:20 > 0:23:25Oh, me first ever tiger fish! Ohh! Get in! So happy.

0:23:25 > 0:23:27That's a great catch for a worm.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30(There is fish here. Ssh! Stay here!)

0:23:30 > 0:23:34These margin areas are where the smaller species,

0:23:34 > 0:23:37like this tilapia, this is where they hang out, in the vegetation,

0:23:37 > 0:23:39because you've seen the tiger fish that are in this river.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42James just caught a small one, there are huge shoals of marauding

0:23:42 > 0:23:46tigers in here that chomp their way through all sorts of small fish,

0:23:46 > 0:23:48so they stay in the margins, where they are hidden

0:23:48 > 0:23:52and out of sight, just in the cover, because they feel safe and secure.

0:23:52 > 0:23:54I'm just not moving much, I think

0:23:54 > 0:23:57that's the key to staying balanced in these boats.

0:23:57 > 0:23:59If you move around too much, there is

0:23:59 > 0:24:02every chance it is going to tip over.

0:24:02 > 0:24:05But if you are going to be a traditional fisherman,

0:24:05 > 0:24:06you really should do it properly.

0:24:08 > 0:24:10Or at least try to!

0:24:10 > 0:24:14Mm-hm. Can you hold my hand?

0:24:14 > 0:24:16OK.

0:24:16 > 0:24:18Then you do it like this.

0:24:18 > 0:24:21- This, come, come on a bit. - Through there?

0:24:21 > 0:24:27Fish from there, where there is good stuff. Now...

0:24:27 > 0:24:28OK.

0:24:30 > 0:24:32- How's that?- Well, I can see better.

0:24:32 > 0:24:35It is a bit risky, but, you know, live on the edge.

0:24:35 > 0:24:38If the crocs want a bit of Welsh rump, fair play to them!

0:24:38 > 0:24:40- CHARLES:- I saw him standing in the mokoro,

0:24:40 > 0:24:44meaning that it is more comfortable, you know, fishing on this river.

0:24:44 > 0:24:48Back in Wales, he fishes from this coracle boat, they are quite

0:24:48 > 0:24:51unstable, actually, so it is a great skill to steer the...

0:24:51 > 0:24:54I think he feels at home.

0:25:03 > 0:25:07- Halfway...- Ohh! Oh-ho-ho!

0:25:07 > 0:25:10..and Dan is the only one not to have caught.

0:25:10 > 0:25:12Time to go for a move now.

0:25:12 > 0:25:14There is no fish where I was there, so we're going to go up,

0:25:14 > 0:25:18- we are prospecting!- Let's go down a bit. Just after that bent tree.

0:25:18 > 0:25:21- Hey, how is it going? - Here's me good luck charm!

0:25:21 > 0:25:23How much pressure is there on you now?

0:25:23 > 0:25:26A lot of pressure, because I didn't catch a vundu yesterday,

0:25:26 > 0:25:30and obviously, the two guys did, so there is always pressure on.

0:25:30 > 0:25:32How are you getting on with the mokoro?

0:25:32 > 0:25:34It's fine, I'm just getting a bit numb.

0:25:34 > 0:25:37It's just making sure that you are nice and steady.

0:25:37 > 0:25:40- There we go. - There is a fish! Yes, fish!

0:25:40 > 0:25:46- There is a fish!- Ah! What was I saying? Good luck charm, mate!

0:25:46 > 0:25:48You can fish with me any day!

0:25:48 > 0:25:55With two big fish in the boat, James is going for quality...

0:25:55 > 0:25:57Got fish!

0:25:57 > 0:25:59- ..whilst Dan... - I've just had two fish

0:25:59 > 0:26:01- straight after each other. - ..is all about quantity.

0:26:01 > 0:26:04But while Calvin was having a look round, I just decided to put

0:26:04 > 0:26:10my worm in here, and as you can see, that's three fish within 30 seconds.

0:26:10 > 0:26:13Instincts, you know, just do what you're here to do.

0:26:13 > 0:26:16If your line is not in the water, you're not going to catch any fish.

0:26:16 > 0:26:19- How's it going, Sam?- I got a tilapia, fairly early on.

0:26:19 > 0:26:22Oh, a little bite there as well! Oh, nearly missed a bite right there!

0:26:22 > 0:26:24What do you think is teasing you there?

0:26:24 > 0:26:26There is a lot of smaller fish around,

0:26:26 > 0:26:29- so I'm getting a lot of bites. There we go.- Oh! Does that count?

0:26:29 > 0:26:32- That definitely counts, it's heads of fish today, isn't it?- Hold it up.

0:26:32 > 0:26:35- They all count today. - Sorry, I shouldn't laugh!

0:26:35 > 0:26:38That's one of the smallest fish I've ever caught.

0:26:38 > 0:26:41But, boy, does it count today, huh?

0:26:46 > 0:26:49Time is running out in their last traditional challenge.

0:26:49 > 0:26:53No, I don't say that I've had a fantastic day today,

0:26:53 > 0:26:56but I've got three fish in the boat, small fish,

0:26:56 > 0:27:00- but it's headcount, it's not size today.- Is it the last five minutes?

0:27:00 > 0:27:03- It's flown by! - A lot of small fish under here.

0:27:03 > 0:27:06When you saw the size of that last one I caught,

0:27:06 > 0:27:08I would love to catch another fish right now

0:27:08 > 0:27:11in the last few minutes, that would be fantastic.

0:27:11 > 0:27:14I think it will be a close run thing today, that's for sure.

0:27:14 > 0:27:17I think we are in the last 30 seconds, so come on!

0:27:17 > 0:27:21I think that's five times I've had them drop off!

0:27:21 > 0:27:24Oh! That was unlucky.

0:27:24 > 0:27:28Time, anglers! Lines up.

0:27:28 > 0:27:29That's it.

0:27:29 > 0:27:32I've caught fish, we'll just see how the guys have got on.

0:27:32 > 0:27:35Being a traditional fisherman myself,

0:27:35 > 0:27:37I've come out and I've caught fish traditionally again.

0:27:37 > 0:27:40I didn't catch many, but, hey, I'm not going back empty-handed,

0:27:40 > 0:27:42I've got something to chuck in the pot tonight.

0:27:42 > 0:27:45It would be fantastic to win the first two

0:27:45 > 0:27:47challenges in the final, you know, that would be going

0:27:47 > 0:27:51into the last challenge totally confident, that would be fantastic.

0:27:51 > 0:27:54The anglers return to the village

0:27:54 > 0:27:58to find out which of them has caught the most fish for dinner.

0:27:58 > 0:28:00All right, boys?

0:28:00 > 0:28:03Lovely. Hey, buddy.

0:28:05 > 0:28:07- Afternoon. ALL:- Afternoon.

0:28:07 > 0:28:10First of all, I want to thank you for not becoming crocodile lunch!

0:28:10 > 0:28:13You all stayed in, I thought you were great in the mokoros.

0:28:13 > 0:28:16Dan, your coracle experience obviously shone through,

0:28:16 > 0:28:17I think you were the only one to stand up.

0:28:17 > 0:28:20Yeah, I had a little bit of help with my balance, so it was good.

0:28:20 > 0:28:24- Sam, can you show us how many fish you caught?- Certainly.

0:28:24 > 0:28:26I caught two fish.

0:28:26 > 0:28:29I think I need to be issued with a microscope to see one of them!

0:28:29 > 0:28:33Um, you were obviously using the equipment quite well to

0:28:33 > 0:28:36present the bait, you were pretty deft at flicking out your float,

0:28:36 > 0:28:40- I think it was a pretty neat performance.- Thanks, Matt.- James?

0:28:40 > 0:28:42- I caught two.- Very nice.

0:28:42 > 0:28:45I know that you took the result with the vundu pretty hard,

0:28:45 > 0:28:48but you picked yourself up and you caught two nice fish there,

0:28:48 > 0:28:52they are both visible to the naked eye, seriously, that is

0:28:52 > 0:28:56pretty impressive, to land them on that light equipment, good for you.

0:28:56 > 0:29:00- Cheers.- Dan, can you show us what you caught?- I had three fish today.

0:29:00 > 0:29:02It's a little bit embarrassing...

0:29:02 > 0:29:05- THEY LAUGH - ..because that is what I caught!

0:29:05 > 0:29:08- Can you confirm there were three for us?- Yeah, there are three in there.

0:29:08 > 0:29:10We did ask, you know, for the number.

0:29:10 > 0:29:12Even though they are quite small fish.

0:29:12 > 0:29:16What would your wife say if you brought that back for the table?

0:29:16 > 0:29:17My wife would say that,

0:29:17 > 0:29:19you know, for even one person, it won't be enough!

0:29:19 > 0:29:22On any other day, it may have come down to weight,

0:29:22 > 0:29:26but Charles and Matt set it as the greatest quantity of fish.

0:29:26 > 0:29:31And on that basis, Dan, you are today's winner. Well done.

0:29:31 > 0:29:34- Sorry, lads!- Good job.

0:29:34 > 0:29:37I'm just going to double-check, is there definitely...

0:29:37 > 0:29:39Yeah, it is definitely a fish! Cheers, Matt, thank you.

0:29:39 > 0:29:41Thank you all very much.

0:29:41 > 0:29:46'All of the fish caught, both large and very small,

0:29:46 > 0:29:48'are prepared for dinner.'

0:29:48 > 0:29:50A little bit embarrassing on the size of the fish,

0:29:50 > 0:29:53but they said it was down to count, and I had the most.

0:29:53 > 0:29:56So, even though it's a little bit of a cheeky one, I'll take it.

0:29:56 > 0:29:59Does your husband bring back fish this small?

0:30:00 > 0:30:03THEY LAUGH

0:30:03 > 0:30:04So close, again!

0:30:04 > 0:30:07When I'm saying so close, that was the size of the fish that beat us!

0:30:07 > 0:30:11- Thank you very much. Are you ready? Ta-da!- Oh, yeah.

0:30:11 > 0:30:14I've made a really good start in this final competition here in

0:30:14 > 0:30:17Zambia, so I've just got to go out there and sock it to 'em tomorrow.

0:30:17 > 0:30:19That's lush.

0:30:19 > 0:30:22- I don't know if that's going to last me the whole day, but...- No, no.

0:30:22 > 0:30:25I think I need to pull it out the bag tomorrow,

0:30:25 > 0:30:30if I can win, that means each one of us will have won a task.

0:30:30 > 0:30:33If you want to win this, you've got to have a big day tomorrow.

0:30:33 > 0:30:36And I'm hoping that I can have a big day tomorrow

0:30:36 > 0:30:39and be in with a shout at the end of it.

0:30:46 > 0:30:47HIPPOS GRUNT

0:30:47 > 0:30:50It's the final challenge of their worldwide expedition.

0:30:55 > 0:30:59The remaining three anglers must use all the skills they've learnt

0:30:59 > 0:31:02in one last chance to impress the judges,

0:31:02 > 0:31:06who have been watching their techniques closely.

0:31:06 > 0:31:09All three of these guys have got different qualities.

0:31:09 > 0:31:13In Dan's case, I've seen huge progress.

0:31:13 > 0:31:18But it's his sheer instinct that's actually his biggest asset.

0:31:18 > 0:31:21What Sam's really good at is the tactical side of things.

0:31:21 > 0:31:24He's strong on the bait fishing side,

0:31:24 > 0:31:27strong on the lure fishing side, if he's got a weakness,

0:31:27 > 0:31:32it's probably his fly fishing, but he masks it very, very well.

0:31:32 > 0:31:34I knew that James would be good at fly fishing.

0:31:34 > 0:31:37I think spin fishing has become something

0:31:37 > 0:31:39he's very much at home with,

0:31:39 > 0:31:43the bait fishing may still be a little bit of a chink in his armour.

0:31:43 > 0:31:46But he has learnt a lot, amazingly fast.

0:31:46 > 0:31:51I'm looking for the complete angler. But I know it's going to be tight.

0:31:51 > 0:31:53Good morning.

0:31:53 > 0:31:54- ALL:- Morning.

0:31:54 > 0:31:58Well, for the final part of your worldwide fishing marathon,

0:31:58 > 0:32:03you are after one of the most ferocious game fish here in Zambia.

0:32:03 > 0:32:07It is often described as Africa's piranha.

0:32:07 > 0:32:09It's the tiger fish.

0:32:09 > 0:32:10I knew it!

0:32:10 > 0:32:14Because our judges are looking for the complete all-rounder,

0:32:14 > 0:32:17we are looking for the fisherman

0:32:17 > 0:32:21who can catch the tiger fish on the fly...

0:32:23 > 0:32:26..on bait, on the lure.

0:32:26 > 0:32:28- Are you ready for this?- Absolutely.

0:32:28 > 0:32:32You will be fishing over the next two days for your chance to be

0:32:32 > 0:32:34crowned our fishing champion.

0:32:34 > 0:32:36- Go fish!- Cheers, mate.

0:32:46 > 0:32:49- Let's go, boys. Good luck, gentlemen! All the best.- Good luck.

0:32:49 > 0:32:51Good luck, guys.

0:32:51 > 0:32:53I'm really, really excited about today.

0:32:53 > 0:32:55There we go, we are off.

0:32:57 > 0:33:02The anglers face the biggest test so far, to combine everything

0:33:02 > 0:33:07they've learnt across six countries and 17 challenges,

0:33:07 > 0:33:11to catch one of the most fearsome fish in Africa.

0:33:11 > 0:33:13Got it all to play for today!

0:33:13 > 0:33:15Big day, big day.

0:33:16 > 0:33:19Tiger fish are powerful swimmers.

0:33:19 > 0:33:26With sharp, interlocking teeth, they are highly effective predators.

0:33:26 > 0:33:28I've always felt an affinity with tiger fish,

0:33:28 > 0:33:29because they have got a dentistry like me!

0:33:29 > 0:33:32But they are seriously the fish of your nightmares.

0:33:32 > 0:33:34They've got a mouth like a steel trap.

0:33:34 > 0:33:40It's a fish which can tend to fight and jump when you catch it.

0:33:40 > 0:33:43Making it about three disciplines really opens it up,

0:33:43 > 0:33:46because it is harder to get lucky three times.

0:33:46 > 0:33:48If you can catch a fish on each method, for me, that's

0:33:48 > 0:33:52a bigger achievement than just getting one big fish on one method.

0:33:52 > 0:33:55They have learned quite a lot, it's whether they have learned enough.

0:33:55 > 0:33:58I'm looking to cast around this submerged structure.

0:33:58 > 0:34:01This is where the small fish are hanging out and where the tiger fish

0:34:01 > 0:34:03are laying, waiting to pounce on their prey.

0:34:03 > 0:34:06It really is about getting as tight in as you can to the structure.

0:34:06 > 0:34:08Got to draw them out from their lair.

0:34:08 > 0:34:14The first tactical decision to make is which method to start on.

0:34:14 > 0:34:16I'm most comfortable with the lure fishing equipment.

0:34:16 > 0:34:18I'd rather get one on the lure first,

0:34:18 > 0:34:20then change to fishing with the fly.

0:34:20 > 0:34:23Not worried about what everyone else is up to, you just get distracted.

0:34:23 > 0:34:25I'm going to stick to my game plan.

0:34:25 > 0:34:28- Look at that, right into the bank. - Perfect casting!

0:34:28 > 0:34:29Thank you, mate.

0:34:29 > 0:34:32I feel at my most confident when I've got a fly rod in my hand.

0:34:32 > 0:34:34Just being active, covering new water,

0:34:34 > 0:34:37trying to entice these tiger fish. Where's the tigers?

0:34:37 > 0:34:40Whilst James and Sam have both chosen to start with their strongest

0:34:40 > 0:34:43method, Dan has other ideas.

0:34:43 > 0:34:45I'm just having a few practice casts, you know,

0:34:45 > 0:34:47so I can see the fly, see how it's moving.

0:34:47 > 0:34:49I think I'm going to surprise a few people.

0:34:49 > 0:34:50I'm fly fishing first,

0:34:50 > 0:34:53which I consider to be my weakest discipline.

0:34:53 > 0:34:55Fly fishing, it's the most difficult one.

0:34:55 > 0:34:58You know, to tell you the truth, if I see someone, you know,

0:34:58 > 0:35:02catching a big tiger fish on a fly rod, it's like the most challenging.

0:35:02 > 0:35:05For me, I'd be thinking about a tiger fish in the shade,

0:35:05 > 0:35:08down near the bottom, so you've got to put it close to him,

0:35:08 > 0:35:11you've got to do that quickly, you've got to do it quietly

0:35:11 > 0:35:13and you've got to do it efficiently.

0:35:13 > 0:35:15Oh, we're into a snag.

0:35:15 > 0:35:17We're fishing with sinking lines -

0:35:17 > 0:35:20if the fly's not coming up every now and again with weed on it,

0:35:20 > 0:35:22then you know you're not in the right place.

0:35:27 > 0:35:30I'm trying to cast over towards the bank over there.

0:35:30 > 0:35:33I'm hoping there's some prey fish or something going to be there.

0:35:33 > 0:35:35Something to switch the tiger fish onto.

0:35:37 > 0:35:39Oh, fish, fish! Oh, it's dropped it!

0:35:39 > 0:35:41It was a tiger, I saw it. Tiger fish.

0:35:41 > 0:35:42Exciting stuff!

0:35:42 > 0:35:44That's why I love fishing.

0:35:46 > 0:35:47The net, please.

0:35:47 > 0:35:50It's not the biggest fish in the world,

0:35:50 > 0:35:52but that it is a tiger fish on the fly.

0:35:52 > 0:35:54- Got it!- And there you have it.

0:35:54 > 0:35:56That's probably 250 grams.

0:35:56 > 0:35:58Who's to say I can't win this with a tidy fish?

0:35:58 > 0:36:00That must really surprise you about Dan.

0:36:00 > 0:36:03It's not a big tiger fish, but, um, superb achievement.

0:36:03 > 0:36:06And, really, he's got the most difficult thing out of the way.

0:36:06 > 0:36:07Fly fishing is James' thing.

0:36:07 > 0:36:09Dan will be doing it cos he feels

0:36:09 > 0:36:11he wants to get the difficult bit out the way.

0:36:11 > 0:36:13James will probably be embracing it

0:36:13 > 0:36:15and thinking, "Well, this is my best shot."

0:36:15 > 0:36:17But he hasn't caught one yet,

0:36:17 > 0:36:20and, I mean, Dan has totally put the cat among the pigeons, totally.

0:36:20 > 0:36:21I've caught a fish

0:36:21 > 0:36:24on what I consider to be my weakest discipline.

0:36:24 > 0:36:26I'm going to give it another 20 minutes

0:36:26 > 0:36:28to see if we can get a bigger one.

0:36:28 > 0:36:31Two hours gone,

0:36:31 > 0:36:36and Dan's tiny tiger has put him in the lead.

0:36:40 > 0:36:43That's Jamesy boy coming on, there.

0:36:43 > 0:36:45Why, aye, man! How are you getting on?

0:36:45 > 0:36:47Er, not too good.

0:36:47 > 0:36:49Have you caught a tiger fish on the fly yet?

0:36:49 > 0:36:50No. Have you?

0:36:50 > 0:36:52- Aye.- You've had one?

0:36:52 > 0:36:54- Good luck, anyway, pal. - Cheers, mate.

0:36:57 > 0:37:00I'm happy with me casting, it's in the right spot.

0:37:00 > 0:37:01I think I'm using the right fly,

0:37:01 > 0:37:03I think I'm using the right technique.

0:37:03 > 0:37:06I'll get one when I deserve one, when I'm ready for one.

0:37:06 > 0:37:09Can we go to the far side? It's too shallow here.

0:37:09 > 0:37:12Right, then, boys and girls, let's go lure fishing.

0:37:17 > 0:37:20There's a bit of a back eddy there, looks perfect.

0:37:20 > 0:37:22Oh, there we go! There we go!

0:37:22 > 0:37:24- There's a tiger?- Yeah.

0:37:24 > 0:37:26That's a good fish, that. Oh, please!

0:37:26 > 0:37:29Fight is unreal, and very acrobatic.

0:37:29 > 0:37:30Oh, no, no, no.

0:37:32 > 0:37:33Whoa, whoa, whoa!

0:37:33 > 0:37:35Idea is just to let the rod do all the work.

0:37:35 > 0:37:38Perfect - if he wants to take the line, he can take it.

0:37:38 > 0:37:39What a fight on this rod!

0:37:39 > 0:37:40Oh, he's a beautiful fish.

0:37:42 > 0:37:45Please don't come off, please don't come off, please don't come off.

0:37:45 > 0:37:47Yes! What a fish!

0:37:47 > 0:37:49What a fish. Oh, my God.

0:37:49 > 0:37:53- If you can actually hold that... - Hold it...

0:37:53 > 0:37:54and then by the tail?

0:37:54 > 0:37:58- Yeah.- Under like that? Oh, my God.

0:37:58 > 0:38:00Look at that for a fish! I'm over the moon!

0:38:00 > 0:38:03Oh, my God, I've always wanted this - what a cracking fish!

0:38:03 > 0:38:05A proper tiger fish.

0:38:05 > 0:38:08It's a great fish to catch on a fly rod,

0:38:08 > 0:38:10it's miles bigger than Dan's.

0:38:10 > 0:38:13Yeah, it's a massive, you know, tiger fish.

0:38:13 > 0:38:18So, on my opinion, it's like he has just, you know, hit on the target.

0:38:18 > 0:38:21- JAMES:- A take like that, acrobatic jumps,

0:38:21 > 0:38:22is totally amazing.

0:38:22 > 0:38:24I'm absolutely lost for words.

0:38:28 > 0:38:31Already halfway through their first day of tiger fishing,

0:38:31 > 0:38:33and all three finalists are now using a lure...

0:38:33 > 0:38:36I'm just going to chuck a couple of spinners in there,

0:38:36 > 0:38:39just cos of the trees and the water and stuff, and it just looks...

0:38:39 > 0:38:41it looks quite nice.

0:38:41 > 0:38:43Yeah, where there's fish eagles, there's fish.

0:38:43 > 0:38:45Oh, there was a take.

0:38:45 > 0:38:48First hit of the day - about time, too.

0:38:48 > 0:38:52..but, for Sam, it's still his first method.

0:38:52 > 0:38:53How are you getting on, Sam?

0:38:53 > 0:38:56I'm all right. I've had one hit, but nothing to the boat yet.

0:38:56 > 0:38:58Still using the lure, spinning?

0:38:58 > 0:39:00Yeah, I'm starting with the lure rod, I'm going

0:39:00 > 0:39:03to try and get one on the lure, move on to the fly, and then the bait.

0:39:03 > 0:39:06I've got my strategy, just going to work my way through it,

0:39:06 > 0:39:08rather than chop and change all the time.

0:39:08 > 0:39:11- It's been pretty tough so far. - OK. Fingers crossed.

0:39:11 > 0:39:13- Good luck, Sam. - Cheers, Ben, thank you.

0:39:13 > 0:39:16On a river with so many ways to get their line snagged...

0:39:16 > 0:39:19Need to get tight to that bank, underneath the cover.

0:39:19 > 0:39:22..casting a lure accurately is key.

0:39:22 > 0:39:24My casting's pretty spot on.

0:39:24 > 0:39:27It's just practice - it's something I've done most of my life.

0:39:27 > 0:39:29If you practise it, you get good at it,

0:39:29 > 0:39:32and you get good at placing the spot and working out how much

0:39:32 > 0:39:36effort you need to put into the cast and what have you.

0:39:36 > 0:39:38- DAN:- There's little grooves in the bank.

0:39:38 > 0:39:42We're just trying to get them in those little grooves.

0:39:43 > 0:39:45I didn't do a very good cast, there,

0:39:45 > 0:39:47I need to be a bit more accurate with my casting.

0:39:47 > 0:39:48Needs to be right in those Vs.

0:39:48 > 0:39:51- The spinning, it's all about precision.- Yeah.

0:39:54 > 0:39:55Right in that eddy.

0:39:55 > 0:39:56In a way, I feel in my element.

0:39:56 > 0:39:58I don't know, it's nice - I'm on a river.

0:39:58 > 0:40:01I sometimes spin for salmon when the water's too high,

0:40:01 > 0:40:04so it's not too far away from what I do, in a way.

0:40:04 > 0:40:07With James and Dan already off the mark,

0:40:07 > 0:40:09they're feeling pretty confident.

0:40:09 > 0:40:13We're in. Oh, it's off, it's off, it's off.

0:40:13 > 0:40:14Fantastic spot here.

0:40:14 > 0:40:17Yeah, yeah, fish on. Definitely.

0:40:17 > 0:40:19Oh, it's come off!

0:40:19 > 0:40:21Definitely my fault. I need to keep my rod down.

0:40:21 > 0:40:23- I keep my rod up too high. - Yeah, that's it.

0:40:23 > 0:40:25That's weed.

0:40:25 > 0:40:26Oh, no, it's a tiger fish!

0:40:27 > 0:40:31Oh, it's off. Oh, no!

0:40:31 > 0:40:33So, the plan is to go downstream.

0:40:33 > 0:40:35We've hammered this three times, so, I think,

0:40:35 > 0:40:37trying to find some new bits.

0:40:39 > 0:40:41We're going to stay in this area for a little while now.

0:40:41 > 0:40:43I know I'm doing the right technique to catch them,

0:40:43 > 0:40:45I just need to get the technique right to land them.

0:40:45 > 0:40:47This area here looks spot on.

0:40:47 > 0:40:50James might be at the perfect spot,

0:40:50 > 0:40:53but he's not the only one that thinks so.

0:40:53 > 0:40:56Oh... Looks like we've got a bit of an audience now, so...

0:40:56 > 0:40:57Are they going in?

0:40:59 > 0:41:00Cheers, guys.

0:41:00 > 0:41:02Absolutely ruined me fishing.

0:41:04 > 0:41:05HE CHUCKLES

0:41:09 > 0:41:13Whilst James and Dan persist with the lures,

0:41:13 > 0:41:15Sam reluctantly moves on.

0:41:15 > 0:41:17Decided to change and have a go with some bait fishing.

0:41:17 > 0:41:19Got a nice little spot here,

0:41:19 > 0:41:22we're going to soak the bait for a little while while we're down here.

0:41:22 > 0:41:25Give it a try, see if that is a successful tactic today.

0:41:25 > 0:41:27I think it looks like a very good spot for bait fishing,

0:41:27 > 0:41:29- but, so far, Sam hasn't caught a fish.- Yeah.

0:41:29 > 0:41:32He was convinced he was going to catch some spinning,

0:41:32 > 0:41:35he knows he's still got the fly fishing mountain to climb -

0:41:35 > 0:41:36that's his hardest discipline.

0:41:36 > 0:41:38I think he could be very frustrated.

0:41:38 > 0:41:40One thing which I've also noticed,

0:41:40 > 0:41:41the sinker he's using is quite heavy.

0:41:41 > 0:41:45- Yeah.- That sinker will... - You think that's too heavy...- Yeah.

0:41:45 > 0:41:47..and the fish will actually feel the weight of the sinker

0:41:47 > 0:41:49- and maybe drop the bait.- Exactly.

0:41:49 > 0:41:51Sam's done quite a lot of course fishing,

0:41:51 > 0:41:54- and should be very familiar with the concept...- Yeah.

0:41:54 > 0:41:57- ..of balancing the size of the sinker with the current.- Yeah.

0:41:57 > 0:42:00So, actually, that's quite a surprising error.

0:42:00 > 0:42:0390 minutes left of their penultimate day of fishing.

0:42:03 > 0:42:07In their epic quest to catch on all three methods,

0:42:07 > 0:42:11Sam is the only one not to have caught a tiger fish at all.

0:42:11 > 0:42:14Oh, you've always got to be optimistic, as a fisherman.

0:42:14 > 0:42:15Eternal optimists.

0:42:15 > 0:42:19James and Dan are still on their second method.

0:42:21 > 0:42:23- Yeah...- Got something.

0:42:23 > 0:42:26- Oh, a tiger fish! - Just got to get it in the net.

0:42:26 > 0:42:29It's... It's pulling all right.

0:42:29 > 0:42:31Yeah.

0:42:31 > 0:42:32Oh, I missed it again.

0:42:32 > 0:42:34Kept the rod tipped down, that time.

0:42:34 > 0:42:36With these tiger fish, you will lose more than you'll catch.

0:42:36 > 0:42:38Ohh...

0:42:38 > 0:42:42Gutted. He was on for a second. Look at that - minced.

0:42:42 > 0:42:46Let's have another cast, see if there's any more down there.

0:42:46 > 0:42:50There we go - we're on. We're on. Get the net, quick!

0:42:50 > 0:42:51Get in! Yes!

0:42:51 > 0:42:53Push on - here it comes.

0:42:53 > 0:42:54Yes, come on!

0:42:54 > 0:42:57They look like something you'd find in a sci-fi movie.

0:42:57 > 0:42:59Best feeling ever, that's totally amazing.

0:42:59 > 0:43:01That's one on the fly, one on the spinner.

0:43:01 > 0:43:03We're going to put him back in the water.

0:43:03 > 0:43:05That's a great relief - I've had one on the fly, now,

0:43:05 > 0:43:06I've had one on the lure.

0:43:06 > 0:43:08Doing a little bit of lure fishing, as well,

0:43:08 > 0:43:10with the bait soaking there.

0:43:10 > 0:43:13Just to get anything right now would be fantastic, you know?

0:43:21 > 0:43:23Yep, fish on.

0:43:25 > 0:43:27Oh, thank goodness for that, we got one.

0:43:27 > 0:43:29About time, too! There we go.

0:43:29 > 0:43:33First one I've ever caught - pretty chuffed with that.

0:43:33 > 0:43:34Beautiful fish.

0:43:34 > 0:43:36Couldn't have come at a better time, huh?

0:43:36 > 0:43:37- Yeah, very fine.- Fantastic.

0:43:37 > 0:43:39Right, now let's go and catch one on the lure.

0:43:39 > 0:43:42Phwoar! It's hard work!

0:43:42 > 0:43:43Last cast.

0:43:43 > 0:43:45Gap there.

0:43:47 > 0:43:48Game over.

0:43:48 > 0:43:50Day one.

0:43:51 > 0:43:54The finalists have put everything they have

0:43:54 > 0:43:58into getting to know this enormous river...

0:43:58 > 0:44:01and for James, the novelty still hasn't worn off.

0:44:01 > 0:44:04Look at this! Doesn't get much better than this.

0:44:04 > 0:44:06You've got hippos, crocodiles -

0:44:06 > 0:44:09look how close we are to this elephant.

0:44:09 > 0:44:11That is absolutely amazing.

0:44:13 > 0:44:15What an end to a perfect day.

0:44:15 > 0:44:17Does it get any better?

0:44:18 > 0:44:19Oh, my God.

0:44:30 > 0:44:33Cheers, guys. See you tomorrow.

0:44:33 > 0:44:35- Danny boy.- How's it going, guys?

0:44:35 > 0:44:37- Jamesy boy.- How did yous get on?

0:44:37 > 0:44:39Two out of three ain't bad.

0:44:39 > 0:44:42- Good job.- Same here. - Fly and spinner.- Same here!

0:44:42 > 0:44:45- Nothing on the bait.- Any good?

0:44:45 > 0:44:48- One of them. - Just the one?- Just the one.

0:44:48 > 0:44:50- Yeah. It's...- It's been a hard day.

0:44:57 > 0:44:59There's not many places you can go in the world

0:44:59 > 0:45:01and have wild elephants, hippos, crocs...

0:45:01 > 0:45:03- Yeah.- Outside your back door. It's surreal.- Oh, yeah.

0:45:03 > 0:45:06- Really.- You're continually pinching yourself.- Yeah.

0:45:06 > 0:45:08- So, a toast... - Cheers!- ..to all of you -

0:45:08 > 0:45:10your final night in Africa.

0:45:10 > 0:45:12- Good luck tomorrow.- Cheers, guys.

0:45:12 > 0:45:15- Good luck tomorrow, guys. - Thank you very much.- Cheers.

0:45:21 > 0:45:23Their final day in Zambia -

0:45:23 > 0:45:26and on their global expedition.

0:45:31 > 0:45:33Here we go again.

0:45:33 > 0:45:35- Good luck.- Good luck, mate.

0:45:35 > 0:45:36- Good luck.- Good luck, guys.

0:45:36 > 0:45:39- See you later, boys. - Are you ready for this?- Yeah.

0:45:39 > 0:45:40Pressure's on today, man.

0:45:40 > 0:45:42Got to play catch-up.

0:45:42 > 0:45:48Just half a day remains to catch a tiger fish on all three methods...

0:45:48 > 0:45:51All right, let's do it.

0:45:51 > 0:45:53I really need to mix it up today with the fly and the lure,

0:45:53 > 0:45:54so I'll be using both.

0:45:54 > 0:45:57The other boys are probably going straight onto their bait,

0:45:57 > 0:45:59seeing as they caught with lure and fly already.

0:45:59 > 0:46:01What I'm going to do is double my chances,

0:46:01 > 0:46:02set up two rods. Both with bait.

0:46:02 > 0:46:05At the moment I'm just thinking about bait, bait, bait.

0:46:05 > 0:46:09..but the judges know it's going to be a close race...

0:46:09 > 0:46:11This is a crucial moment, really,

0:46:11 > 0:46:14and this is about finding the complete package.

0:46:14 > 0:46:18These three guys have fished their hearts out.

0:46:18 > 0:46:20We owe it to them to debate every cast,

0:46:20 > 0:46:24every fish to the nth degree, until we are satisfied

0:46:24 > 0:46:28that the person that we crown as champion is the best fisherman.

0:46:28 > 0:46:30- SAM:- I'm not panicking,

0:46:30 > 0:46:33just going to fish as best I can.

0:46:33 > 0:46:34A few months ago,

0:46:34 > 0:46:37I would have said bait fishing is my weakest out of the lot,

0:46:37 > 0:46:39but I do enjoy it, I know how to rig up...

0:46:39 > 0:46:41Yeah, just pushing the bait down, he is.

0:46:41 > 0:46:43That's his tactic this morning.

0:46:43 > 0:46:45We've tied up, James is drifting.

0:46:45 > 0:46:46You always want to keep a look

0:46:46 > 0:46:49and see what's happening with the rest of the guys.

0:46:49 > 0:46:51Dan looks like he's anchored up.

0:46:52 > 0:46:55You'll know when you've got a bite.

0:46:55 > 0:46:58Literally, you'll know when you've got a bite.

0:46:59 > 0:47:01That looks like a bite there.

0:47:01 > 0:47:03Obviously, sometimes, with the static bait,

0:47:03 > 0:47:05it's easier for the fish to home in on it,

0:47:05 > 0:47:06but you're covering a lot more fish here.

0:47:06 > 0:47:09..and it's not just James that Dan's keeping an eye on.

0:47:09 > 0:47:12With him spinning, I'd say he still hasn't had one on the lure,

0:47:12 > 0:47:14which, for me, is not a bad thing.

0:47:14 > 0:47:18The clock is ticking, and I know I'm doing everything right, you know.

0:47:18 > 0:47:21That's the frustrating thing - I'm in the right places,

0:47:21 > 0:47:23I'm landing that lure exactly where it needs to land.

0:47:23 > 0:47:26Sometimes you do these casts and you're like,

0:47:26 > 0:47:28"Oh, yeah, that deserves a fish."

0:47:28 > 0:47:29I kind of feel like I deserve a fish.

0:47:29 > 0:47:31I've fished so hard for two days now.

0:47:37 > 0:47:38Two hours gone.

0:47:41 > 0:47:44Heart is going ten to the dozen at the moment.

0:47:44 > 0:47:48Dan and James have just one method left to catch on -

0:47:48 > 0:47:50bait.

0:47:51 > 0:47:53Yep. There's a tiger.

0:47:53 > 0:47:55He's coming up, this time. Are you ready?

0:47:55 > 0:47:57He's coming up. Whoa, whoa, whoa!

0:48:01 > 0:48:03Oh, yes!

0:48:03 > 0:48:05Yes.

0:48:05 > 0:48:07Oh, right, that's the hat trick done.

0:48:07 > 0:48:10Gorgeous fish - we'll get him straight back in the water, though.

0:48:10 > 0:48:12Yes!

0:48:12 > 0:48:14Ohh!

0:48:14 > 0:48:16The pressure just feels like it's gone.

0:48:18 > 0:48:19It's not over yet, though.

0:48:19 > 0:48:22So, they've got just under and hour to go.

0:48:22 > 0:48:24I can't imagine the pressure they must be under.

0:48:24 > 0:48:26James is obviously out on top right now.

0:48:26 > 0:48:29He's already caught his three fish, one on each technique.

0:48:29 > 0:48:32He's marched up that mountain, put his flag up there

0:48:32 > 0:48:35and said to the others, "OK, now come and get me."

0:48:35 > 0:48:38And then we've got Dan - still to catch one with bait,

0:48:38 > 0:48:40but nonetheless, he's still in there with a shout.

0:48:40 > 0:48:42And then we've got Sam - very methodical.

0:48:42 > 0:48:45He's been a really consistent performer

0:48:45 > 0:48:46through all the other rounds -

0:48:46 > 0:48:49however, the wheel's fallen off a little bit,

0:48:49 > 0:48:50and that happens in fishing,

0:48:50 > 0:48:53because sometimes you get the luck factor,

0:48:53 > 0:48:54or was it some bad decisions?

0:48:54 > 0:48:58Be under no illusions, he will fish till the very last second.

0:48:58 > 0:49:00This is still wide open.

0:49:00 > 0:49:02- SAM:- Still not hooking up.

0:49:02 > 0:49:05And that's just the way it is - I've got to keep casting.

0:49:05 > 0:49:09It's all I can do, really, is just keep doing what I'm doing.

0:49:09 > 0:49:15Sam is throwing everything he has into catching on the lure and fly.

0:49:15 > 0:49:18It's just that positive hook-up is all we need.

0:49:18 > 0:49:20Ooh! Might've been a tap.

0:49:23 > 0:49:25Here we go. Something's on.

0:49:25 > 0:49:27Yep. Yes! Ooh...

0:49:27 > 0:49:29It's a tiger on the lure.

0:49:31 > 0:49:32Oh, thank God for that!

0:49:32 > 0:49:36I worked so hard for that fish, and I knew I was doing everything right.

0:49:36 > 0:49:39I'm so, so relieved to have got one on the lure at last.

0:49:39 > 0:49:41Fantastic. I'm happy with that, I tell you.

0:49:41 > 0:49:45Right, let's get it back - I've got to get one on the fly, now.

0:49:45 > 0:49:48I'm on a level par with the boys when they left this morning.

0:49:48 > 0:49:50If I can take one on the fly as well, then...

0:49:50 > 0:49:53I think I'm still in with a good chance.

0:49:53 > 0:49:56Sam's now only one catch behind James -

0:49:56 > 0:49:58and he's not the only one.

0:49:58 > 0:50:02I'm going to do a bait fishing, but it's going to be free lining,

0:50:02 > 0:50:04where you just throw a bait over the side on a sinker

0:50:04 > 0:50:06and let that drift down with you.

0:50:06 > 0:50:09See if we can try and get a take that way.

0:50:14 > 0:50:18There's only 30 minutes left of the whole expedition.

0:50:18 > 0:50:20There's not long left.

0:50:20 > 0:50:23I keep thinking about the other guys, but then I think I'm just...

0:50:23 > 0:50:26I've done what I set out to do - I just wanted to top,

0:50:26 > 0:50:29and now I want to get more fish on the boat.

0:50:29 > 0:50:32Aware things could change in the blink of an eye,

0:50:32 > 0:50:34James is trying everything he can.

0:50:34 > 0:50:36I've put one of the bait rods down, left one out,

0:50:36 > 0:50:39and I've put me spinner ordinary out again,

0:50:39 > 0:50:41just to try and get numbers on board.

0:50:41 > 0:50:42I'm hoping that, you know,

0:50:42 > 0:50:45maybe with a bigger chunk it'll sink down to the bottom a little bit.

0:50:45 > 0:50:48I haven't managed to catch on the bait fishing today.

0:50:48 > 0:50:51We'll see what happens now.

0:50:51 > 0:50:53Had some action on the bait here yesterday -

0:50:53 > 0:50:55it's a nice little spot with a feeder stream - worth a try.

0:50:55 > 0:50:58At the moment, you know, time is the problem,

0:50:58 > 0:50:59we're down to the last 15 minutes,

0:50:59 > 0:51:02so just got to keep fishing hard and hope for that pull.

0:51:02 > 0:51:03Bait the trail up a little bit.

0:51:03 > 0:51:06Hopefully try and get something interested.

0:51:06 > 0:51:08I'm covering water - if there's a hook in the water,

0:51:08 > 0:51:11you've got a chance. Might get lucky, you never know.

0:51:11 > 0:51:14If I could pull a bit of last-minute luck out the bag,

0:51:14 > 0:51:15that'd be fantastic.

0:51:17 > 0:51:19Just need one bit of luck.

0:51:21 > 0:51:22Yeah, got a fish on here.

0:51:23 > 0:51:24True to form,

0:51:24 > 0:51:27Dan hooks up in the last few minutes.

0:51:27 > 0:51:29I think it's a catfish.

0:51:29 > 0:51:31It's a catfish.

0:51:31 > 0:51:33You know, it's the way it goes.

0:51:33 > 0:51:34But, you know, I also did catch on bait -

0:51:34 > 0:51:36so, I've caught on all three methods.

0:51:36 > 0:51:40Two minutes to go, got a bit of a tangle blowing up in the wind, here.

0:51:40 > 0:51:42There's no point in panicking.

0:51:42 > 0:51:44One last cast, fishermen!

0:51:44 > 0:51:47All this time's come down to this.

0:51:48 > 0:51:49Come on, guys.

0:51:51 > 0:51:53Come on!

0:51:53 > 0:51:56Three we go - that's it.

0:51:56 > 0:51:58That's the competition over.

0:51:58 > 0:52:00- Time's up.- Time is up.

0:52:00 > 0:52:02- All right.- Yeah, I'm sorry, man.

0:52:02 > 0:52:03What an epic, epic journey.

0:52:03 > 0:52:06One of us gets crowned champion - I hope it's me.

0:52:06 > 0:52:08You know, I've put my heart and soul into this.

0:52:10 > 0:52:13The anglers' final test is over.

0:52:22 > 0:52:24Welcome back, anglers.

0:52:24 > 0:52:25- Hello.- How's it going?

0:52:25 > 0:52:27What a competition you made this,

0:52:27 > 0:52:30with the efforts of the last two days.

0:52:30 > 0:52:32You can all be proud of making this a terrific final.

0:52:32 > 0:52:36It was an epic challenge, you know, for you,

0:52:36 > 0:52:39you know, for the past few days, so I say congratulations, guys.

0:52:39 > 0:52:43We asked for each of you to try and catch a tiger fish

0:52:43 > 0:52:45using the three different techniques.

0:52:45 > 0:52:49Sam, the fish that you caught were on lure and on bait,

0:52:49 > 0:52:51and they were very nice fish.

0:52:51 > 0:52:55It's just the fly-caught fish that prevented the perfect sheet -

0:52:55 > 0:52:58but nonetheless, it was a fair old effort.

0:52:58 > 0:52:59Thank you, Matt. Cheers.

0:52:59 > 0:53:02James, you went out there and you did it.

0:53:02 > 0:53:04Fly, spinner and bait.

0:53:04 > 0:53:08The fish that you caught on the fly was not far off eight pounds,

0:53:08 > 0:53:10and that's a belting tiger fish.

0:53:10 > 0:53:12I'm actually quite jealous.

0:53:12 > 0:53:13Boyhood dream, mate.

0:53:13 > 0:53:17Dan, you scored very early with a fly-caught tiger fish.

0:53:17 > 0:53:19- It wasn't a big tiger fish...- No.

0:53:19 > 0:53:21..but it was a tiger fish on the fly.

0:53:21 > 0:53:24You had a nice two pound-plusser, on a lure -

0:53:24 > 0:53:28- unfortunately, the fish you caught on a bait was a catfish.- Yeah.

0:53:28 > 0:53:29That's a shame.

0:53:29 > 0:53:30Well done, anglers.

0:53:30 > 0:53:33I really know how much effort you put into this -

0:53:33 > 0:53:35but the judges wanted the angler

0:53:35 > 0:53:38who could perform in all three techniques,

0:53:38 > 0:53:42so the winner of this last challenge here is James.

0:53:42 > 0:53:43- Eventually.- Well done.

0:53:43 > 0:53:44- Cheers, guys.- Congratulations.

0:53:44 > 0:53:46You've done an amazing, amazing job, guys.

0:53:46 > 0:53:48- We'll return shortly. - Thank you very much.

0:53:48 > 0:53:50- Cheers, guys.- Thank you.- Thank you.

0:54:02 > 0:54:04What a few days it's been out here!

0:54:04 > 0:54:08Three very different challenges, and each of them has a win.

0:54:08 > 0:54:10It's been an incredible final.

0:54:10 > 0:54:12It's got everything we need in it.

0:54:12 > 0:54:14All the fishing skills have been on show,

0:54:14 > 0:54:17and we've got a really hard choice to make -

0:54:17 > 0:54:20but we have enough information to make that choice.

0:54:20 > 0:54:22Charles, what about Dan, then?

0:54:22 > 0:54:26On the vundu challenge, he caught a five-pounder catfish,

0:54:26 > 0:54:31and for the second day, he caught some small, small tilapia.

0:54:31 > 0:54:35But I actually think he was fishing a very pure, stealthy technique.

0:54:35 > 0:54:39I think it's every bit as good as catching a big vundu.

0:54:39 > 0:54:41And then, of course, on Dan's third and final challenge,

0:54:41 > 0:54:46he caught fish - not necessarily the fish we wanted him to catch.

0:54:46 > 0:54:48Unfortunately, a vundu catfish came in on bait.

0:54:48 > 0:54:53On the fly rod, he managed to land, you know, a tiger fish,

0:54:53 > 0:54:55but that was, you know, about one-pounder.

0:54:55 > 0:54:57But it was on the fly rod -

0:54:57 > 0:54:59you're always impressed catching them on the fly rod.

0:54:59 > 0:55:04I was impressed, but, you know, I'm trying to look

0:55:04 > 0:55:06and maybe make the judgment.

0:55:06 > 0:55:10James, you know, for the first day, he didn't land any vundu at all.

0:55:10 > 0:55:13Then, when we went to the village, the second day,

0:55:13 > 0:55:15he landed, you know, some decent fish.

0:55:15 > 0:55:17He did start quite slowly, but then all of a sudden,

0:55:17 > 0:55:19when he gets to the two-day event,

0:55:19 > 0:55:22he puts in a meteorically strong performance at the end.

0:55:22 > 0:55:26He managed to land that big tiger fish - eight-pounder -

0:55:26 > 0:55:27on a fly, you know.

0:55:27 > 0:55:31It's something which, you know, it makes me proud.

0:55:31 > 0:55:33Sam came into this week, Mr Consistent -

0:55:33 > 0:55:35won the first challenge.

0:55:35 > 0:55:39Yes, 17.5-pound vundu - it was the biggest fish by a mile.

0:55:39 > 0:55:42And then what about with the local challenge?

0:55:42 > 0:55:45He landed a decent, you know, tilapia, and also a small one.

0:55:45 > 0:55:47It wasn't so bad.

0:55:47 > 0:55:50And then we come into the third challenge - failed on the fly.

0:55:50 > 0:55:51- Bit of an- Achilles- heel.

0:55:51 > 0:55:53Three great contenders -

0:55:53 > 0:55:56none of them should reproach themselves for what they've done.

0:55:56 > 0:55:58They have given it their all.

0:56:20 > 0:56:22What a journey we've all been on!

0:56:22 > 0:56:27It began all those weeks ago in the rain and hail of Iceland,

0:56:27 > 0:56:32and it finishes here on the banks of the Zambezi under the African sun.

0:56:32 > 0:56:36Our judges had a really, really tough decision.

0:56:36 > 0:56:39They haven't taken it lightly,

0:56:39 > 0:56:44but based on this incredible week's fishing here in Zambia,

0:56:44 > 0:56:51the winner of our worldwide fishing adventure...

0:56:51 > 0:56:52is...

0:57:05 > 0:57:08- ..James.- Yes!- Well done, sir. - Well done.

0:57:08 > 0:57:10Well done, well done.

0:57:10 > 0:57:13- How do you feel?- Shocked.- Well done.

0:57:13 > 0:57:16- Extremely well done.- Thank you. - Congratulations.- Thank you.

0:57:16 > 0:57:17Well done.

0:57:17 > 0:57:19The champion - hold it up!

0:57:19 > 0:57:21THEY LAUGH

0:57:21 > 0:57:24Crying like a big baby!

0:57:24 > 0:57:26Oh-h!

0:57:26 > 0:57:27Still trying to take it all in.

0:57:29 > 0:57:30I'm lost for words.

0:57:33 > 0:57:36I can't believe it.

0:57:36 > 0:57:37CORK POPS

0:57:37 > 0:57:38Whoo-hoo!

0:57:38 > 0:57:41- Here's to an incredible experience. - Cheers!

0:57:41 > 0:57:43I was close, but no cigar -

0:57:43 > 0:57:45but I'm really, really pleased for James.

0:57:45 > 0:57:47He's a good guy. Good, good guy.

0:57:47 > 0:57:49He's become a very, very good friend of mine.

0:57:49 > 0:57:52Cheers, champ! Nicely done.

0:57:52 > 0:57:54Being given this fantastic opportunity

0:57:54 > 0:57:56to come and see all these amazing places,

0:57:56 > 0:57:58and to experience the things we have,

0:57:58 > 0:58:01that's it - really, really lucky bloke.

0:58:01 > 0:58:04I've always loved fishing, but taking part in this,

0:58:04 > 0:58:06it just grabs hold of you,

0:58:06 > 0:58:08and reminds you of what fishing is about.

0:58:08 > 0:58:10Taking part, making friends,
