0:00:13 > 0:00:17The Japanese Alps.
0:00:17 > 0:00:23Haunt of a remarkable population of primates. Snow monkeys.
0:00:25 > 0:00:27The extremes of the seasons,
0:00:27 > 0:00:31the complexities of family life,
0:00:31 > 0:00:34and the stresses of the modern world
0:00:34 > 0:00:38test their toughness and ingenuity to the full.
0:00:43 > 0:00:45It thrust some monkeys into the limelight
0:00:51 > 0:00:54and left others being hunted down like vermin.
0:00:58 > 0:01:03This is the story of three troops leading very different lifestyles.
0:01:06 > 0:01:09On their trail is a young primatologist
0:01:09 > 0:01:13who wants to uncover the secret lives of Japan's snow monkeys.
0:01:26 > 0:01:30It's autumn in Jigokudani or Hell's Valley
0:01:30 > 0:01:34and one very special troop of snow monkeys is on the move.
0:02:01 > 0:02:05These are wild animals, free to roam anywhere on the mountains.
0:02:05 > 0:02:11But every morning they have a very important appointment they can't afford to miss.
0:02:20 > 0:02:24For years now they've become accustomed to hand-outs.
0:02:33 > 0:02:37But it's not just the grain that draws them out of the forest.
0:02:42 > 0:02:48There are volcanically heated springs here, too,
0:02:48 > 0:02:52and there's nothing like a hot bath to start the day.
0:03:01 > 0:03:06But this troop hasn't always had these luxurious facilities at their disposal.
0:03:08 > 0:03:1140 years ago, they were like any other wild troop.
0:03:13 > 0:03:18But then one young monkey began to mimic the behaviour of human bathers
0:03:18 > 0:03:22who came to the valley to take the waters.
0:03:22 > 0:03:26Her boldness was about to change the life of the whole clan.
0:03:26 > 0:03:28As others quickly followed suit,
0:03:28 > 0:03:33the hot springs troop became international celebrities almost overnight.
0:03:38 > 0:03:41But fame carries a price.
0:03:41 > 0:03:44Every morning the troop must face their adoring fans.
0:03:44 > 0:03:46These A-list primates
0:03:46 > 0:03:50are some of the most photographed animals in the world.
0:04:05 > 0:04:11Their lives may now be easier, but all food is valuable
0:04:13 > 0:04:16and these clever monkeys have even puzzled out
0:04:16 > 0:04:19how to retrieve grain from the bottom of the hot springs.
0:04:23 > 0:04:26Each monkey has its own technique.
0:04:32 > 0:04:35Some head for the deep end,
0:04:35 > 0:04:37filling their cheek pouches on each dive.
0:04:59 > 0:05:04Those that don't like getting their heads wet shuffle around in the shallows
0:05:04 > 0:05:08which means some nifty footwork if they're not to go hungry.
0:05:20 > 0:05:23Their ingenuity comes as no surprise to one particular visitor.
0:05:26 > 0:05:32Biologist Takayo Soma has studied primates in Africa for ten years
0:05:32 > 0:05:38but she's become increasingly fascinated by the monkeys that live in her homeland.
0:05:41 > 0:05:45TRANSLATION: I was born just a few miles from here
0:05:45 > 0:05:51and the snow monkeys I know are those I see around my family's farm.
0:05:51 > 0:05:55Unlike the pampered troop up at the hot springs,
0:05:55 > 0:06:00these monkeys lead a very hand to mouth existence.
0:06:00 > 0:06:01When I was young
0:06:01 > 0:06:06it was a rare treat to see them this far down in the valley,
0:06:06 > 0:06:10but in recent years snow monkeys have started to raid farms
0:06:10 > 0:06:13and begun to cause some real problems.
0:06:20 > 0:06:24On the family farm, Takayo and her mother check the orchards,
0:06:24 > 0:06:26as much for signs of unwelcome visitors
0:06:26 > 0:06:28as for the ripeness of the crop.
0:06:31 > 0:06:37I'm amazed how one animal can provoke such extreme reactions.
0:06:37 > 0:06:43While the hot springs troop are adored, these crop raiders are hated.
0:06:45 > 0:06:49I want to find out more about how and why
0:06:49 > 0:06:53they've ended up living such different lives.
0:06:53 > 0:06:59It's ironic that the hot springs troop can gorge themselves on apples to their hearts' content.
0:07:04 > 0:07:11The daily feeding makes this the perfect place to watch monkeys going about their day-to-day business
0:07:11 > 0:07:13and there's lots to be learned.
0:07:15 > 0:07:18The wardens keep detailed records that stretch back over 40 years,
0:07:18 > 0:07:23so individual family trees can be traced for generations.
0:07:25 > 0:07:30These logs reveal the complex power struggles that shape snow monkey society.
0:07:33 > 0:07:36And there's one character who dominates the rest,
0:07:36 > 0:07:39the reigning queen.
0:07:45 > 0:07:48Surrounded by her sisters, daughters and aunts,
0:07:48 > 0:07:52she is at the helm of a fearsome female dynasty.
0:07:56 > 0:08:00Anyone stepping out of line feels the full force of the sisterhood.
0:08:12 > 0:08:14These aren't empty threats.
0:08:14 > 0:08:18Serious injuries are not uncommon.
0:08:20 > 0:08:25The sisterhood even decides the status of the males.
0:08:25 > 0:08:29For the moment, this male is the chosen one.
0:08:29 > 0:08:32Woe betide anyone who gets in his way!
0:08:46 > 0:08:51But his future ultimately depends on him staying on the right side of the queen.
0:08:53 > 0:08:56As long as his face fits and his performance is up to scratch,
0:08:56 > 0:08:59then his legacy will be assured.
0:09:05 > 0:09:09For the moment at least, his position seems secure.
0:09:13 > 0:09:17On first impression, this troop seems to have it all.
0:09:17 > 0:09:19Their extra food they are given
0:09:19 > 0:09:23means this group is now far larger than most wild troops,
0:09:23 > 0:09:28at last count almost 200 individuals.
0:09:28 > 0:09:33Clearly, this is not how the vast majority of snow monkeys live.
0:09:33 > 0:09:39And it's those other troops I'm really interested in finding out more about.
0:09:40 > 0:09:46For this, Takayo needs to travel only a few miles away
0:09:46 > 0:09:49but it feels like another world.
0:10:19 > 0:10:22This is the Kamikochi Valley,
0:10:22 > 0:10:26the very heart of one of Japan's most famous national parks.
0:10:32 > 0:10:36All life here revolves around the Azusa River.
0:10:42 > 0:10:46And eventually the mountain troop put in an appearance.
0:10:56 > 0:11:02Every day they must brave the frigid water as they criss-cross the valley in search of food.
0:11:17 > 0:11:20The first thing that immediately strikes me
0:11:20 > 0:11:24is how much smaller these monkeys are,
0:11:24 > 0:11:29maybe half the size of those living around the hot springs,
0:11:29 > 0:11:32and they're much more wary.
0:11:32 > 0:11:36The atmosphere within the group feels very different, too.
0:11:36 > 0:11:40Here, it's generally much more subdued.
0:11:40 > 0:11:43They appear to be so focused on finding food,
0:11:43 > 0:11:47that there's just no time for all that squabbling.
0:11:52 > 0:11:56The troop cover several kilometres every day
0:11:56 > 0:11:59feeding on whatever they can find,
0:11:59 > 0:12:02leaves, berries, insects
0:12:02 > 0:12:09even tree-bark. There's certainly less drama than at the hot springs,
0:12:09 > 0:12:13but power in this troop still lies in the hands of its females.
0:12:13 > 0:12:18The subordinate monkeys often scout ahead looking for food.
0:12:18 > 0:12:22But as soon as they stumble onto something tasty,
0:12:22 > 0:12:25the dominant female and her family muscle in.
0:12:28 > 0:12:31Rank always holds sway.
0:12:41 > 0:12:43As the days shorten,
0:12:43 > 0:12:48it's clear that it's not just status that matters up here,
0:12:48 > 0:12:50but experience, too.
0:12:52 > 0:12:56The intimate local knowledge of the older monkeys,
0:12:56 > 0:13:00where to cross the river safely,
0:13:00 > 0:13:04where to seek shelter during storms,
0:13:04 > 0:13:07where to find food,
0:13:07 > 0:13:11must be crucial, especially as they prepare for harder times.
0:13:38 > 0:13:44For the next few months, deep snow and sub-zero temperatures
0:13:44 > 0:13:48are the monkeys' constant companions.
0:14:01 > 0:14:05Surviving in this frozen world ought to be a real challenge,
0:14:05 > 0:14:10yet on the face of it, life for the hot springs troop carries on much as before.
0:14:15 > 0:14:18They still roost in the sheltering forest
0:14:18 > 0:14:21and roll out each morning for their daily feed.
0:14:24 > 0:14:29Only a narrow stream stands between them and breakfast,
0:14:29 > 0:14:34fed by warmed water from deep underground it never freezes,
0:14:34 > 0:14:37even with the mercury stuck well below zero.
0:14:40 > 0:14:44The hardest job of the day is sifting the grain from the snow
0:14:44 > 0:14:49but compared to finding food in the wild, this is a minor inconvenience.
0:14:52 > 0:14:56Being fed every day has obviously left them with time on their hands.
0:14:56 > 0:14:59Time they fill in some ingenious ways.
0:15:01 > 0:15:03For some of the youngsters,
0:15:03 > 0:15:07playing with snowballs seems to have become an obsession.
0:15:15 > 0:15:20It began when one juvenile started playing with chunks of snow,
0:15:20 > 0:15:24but quickly spread as others mimicked what they saw.
0:15:27 > 0:15:30It's the same kind of copy-cat behaviour
0:15:30 > 0:15:33that got this troop into the hot springs in the first place.
0:16:00 > 0:16:05All this spare time and excess energy can be a mixed blessing.
0:16:12 > 0:16:17With so many animals crowded together, there's always some score to be settled.
0:16:29 > 0:16:33However, targets must be carefully selected.
0:16:41 > 0:16:44This young one may be small,
0:16:44 > 0:16:48but it's from a high-ranking family and has allies to call on,
0:16:48 > 0:16:51enough to make anyone think twice.
0:17:05 > 0:17:10Frustrated, the bully vents his fury on a less well-connected passer-by.
0:17:12 > 0:17:15Between these violent outbursts,
0:17:15 > 0:17:20life revolves around the constant need to replenish energy and keep warm.
0:17:32 > 0:17:36The hot water bubbling up from deep underground
0:17:36 > 0:17:41keeps the pool at a constant 40 degrees centigrade, whatever the weather.
0:17:53 > 0:17:57Because they have such thick winter coats
0:17:57 > 0:17:59they don't get wet through to the skin.
0:18:11 > 0:18:13Faces flush pink with the heat.
0:18:24 > 0:18:27In this more relaxed atmosphere,
0:18:27 > 0:18:30alliances are made and strengthened.
0:18:30 > 0:18:34Grooming is the glue that binds this complex society together.
0:18:39 > 0:18:43These monkeys must be just about the luckiest in the world.
0:18:45 > 0:18:51Their fame now all but guarantees them a well-fed and relatively comfortable winter.
0:18:55 > 0:19:00By contrast, life for the mountain troop is getting harder by the day.
0:19:23 > 0:19:28In Kamikochi, the big freeze has hit with a vengeance.
0:19:37 > 0:19:39With the roads closed until spring,
0:19:39 > 0:19:43the only way into this mountain refuge is on skis.
0:19:46 > 0:19:51It's exhilarating to be out in this beautiful, silent world...
0:19:51 > 0:19:59but I didn't realise just how hard it would be to track the snow monkeys in these conditions.
0:19:59 > 0:20:03Today, the temperature is -20.
0:20:03 > 0:20:09Out here in this cold, a single mistake could be fatal.
0:20:09 > 0:20:12I can't imagine how the monkeys survive.
0:20:15 > 0:20:19Yet even now, there are some signs of life.
0:20:27 > 0:20:28But where are the monkeys?
0:20:33 > 0:20:36The mountain troop must have passed this way.
0:20:36 > 0:20:42This is all very fresh damage and could only have been made by monkeys.
0:20:42 > 0:20:48The layers beneath this willow bark contain small amounts of sugars,
0:20:48 > 0:20:51but imagine having to eat this!
0:20:54 > 0:20:59So far, this is the only evidence the mountain troop is still alive.
0:21:09 > 0:21:12While the search continues,
0:21:12 > 0:21:17Takayo pays her respects at a remote forest shrine.
0:21:23 > 0:21:27Snow monkeys have been revered for centuries.
0:21:28 > 0:21:31Perhaps this visit will bring a change of luck.
0:21:41 > 0:21:44Two days later,
0:21:44 > 0:21:48her persistence is rewarded as monkeys emerge out of the gloom.
0:21:56 > 0:22:02Food is so scarce the monkeys have been forced to spread far and wide through the forest,
0:22:02 > 0:22:05each locked in their own private struggle for survival.
0:22:11 > 0:22:15They spend hours each day eating tree bark
0:22:15 > 0:22:17just to get something into their stomachs.
0:22:17 > 0:22:23I can't believe they can survive such a hostile climate on such a meagre diet.
0:22:27 > 0:22:31When times are this hard, being surrounded by family and friends
0:22:31 > 0:22:33is a great comfort.
0:22:36 > 0:22:40But those on the periphery, usually young males,
0:22:40 > 0:22:43can be left bitterly exposed.
0:22:51 > 0:22:54The older monkeys are veterans of such intense cold.
0:22:57 > 0:23:00As a last resort, they turn again to the river...
0:23:01 > 0:23:05..still flowing thanks to volcanic springs along its course.
0:23:09 > 0:23:14Insect larvae lie hidden amongst the rocks.
0:23:18 > 0:23:23These tiny morsels can make the difference between life and death.
0:23:50 > 0:23:56These are monkeys living at the absolute limits of endurance.
0:24:02 > 0:24:07No other non-human primate is found this far north.
0:24:13 > 0:24:18As night falls, temperatures plummet.
0:24:18 > 0:24:21The open riverbank is no place to linger.
0:24:27 > 0:24:31The troop retreats deep into the heavy foliage of the conifers.
0:24:34 > 0:24:37This may take the edge off the wind,
0:24:37 > 0:24:40but it's still perishingly cold.
0:24:41 > 0:24:44Huddling together provides a degree of warmth...
0:24:45 > 0:24:49..but not everyone has this safety net.
0:24:56 > 0:25:00Again, the young males get the cold shoulder.
0:25:00 > 0:25:05Each lonely hour of each bitter winter night will take its toll.
0:25:12 > 0:25:16The urban troop is facing up to their own winter problems.
0:25:20 > 0:25:26As supplies of wild foods dwindle, they make increasingly bold excursions from the forest.
0:25:36 > 0:25:40The main valley through the region is intensively cultivated.
0:25:40 > 0:25:44What was once forest is now rice paddies and orchards.
0:25:55 > 0:25:58Rotted fruit, forgotten corn cobs,
0:25:58 > 0:26:03even the husks of old cherries are precious finds for hungry monkeys.
0:26:05 > 0:26:11Now I've seen just how hard life is for the snow monkeys high in the mountains,
0:26:11 > 0:26:16I can understand why these orchards are so attractive.
0:26:18 > 0:26:25For farmers, it must be devastating to see their precious trees being damaged.
0:26:25 > 0:26:30But for the monkeys, these raids are definitely a risk worth taking.
0:26:32 > 0:26:36But years of persecution have made the troop very jumpy.
0:26:36 > 0:26:41Even me being here is more than enough to send them scurrying for cover.
0:26:58 > 0:27:01Orchards are not the only source of food here...
0:27:04 > 0:27:08..and monkeys not the only scavengers.
0:27:11 > 0:27:16Bewick's swans spend the summer in Siberia, but they can tough out
0:27:16 > 0:27:19the entire winter here on the frozen rice paddies.
0:27:30 > 0:27:34Monkeys use the paddies, too,
0:27:34 > 0:27:36but they often go a step further.
0:27:40 > 0:27:44There's usually something to be scavenged in a backyard
0:27:44 > 0:27:48and once the association between easy food and people has been made,
0:27:48 > 0:27:51daily trips into town become routine.
0:28:02 > 0:28:06Compared to fishing insect larvae out of a freezing river,
0:28:06 > 0:28:10a plundered bag of rice husks must seem like a feast.
0:28:27 > 0:28:32None of the troops appears totally immune to the brutality of the season.
0:28:41 > 0:28:45Even for the privileged hot springs troop,
0:28:45 > 0:28:49winter is something to be endured rather than enjoyed.
0:28:57 > 0:29:03For all snow monkeys, starvation, disease and death are never far away.
0:29:19 > 0:29:22Young monkeys are hit particularly hard.
0:29:32 > 0:29:35Spring can't come soon enough.
0:29:55 > 0:30:00The arrival of the cherry blossom heralds the turn of the year.
0:30:00 > 0:30:03It's a very special time in Japan,
0:30:03 > 0:30:06one that celebrates renewal and rebirth.
0:30:09 > 0:30:13The new rice crop is planted...
0:30:20 > 0:30:23..and the apple orchards get a spring clean.
0:30:32 > 0:30:34Life returns to the mountains, too.
0:30:52 > 0:30:57Takayo heads up to Kamikochi to see how the mountain troop has fared.
0:31:00 > 0:31:04There's been an amazing transformation up here.
0:31:04 > 0:31:10It's a relief to see so many familiar old faces have made it through
0:31:10 > 0:31:13and there are some new ones, too!
0:31:31 > 0:31:36It's incredible to think that these females have not only managed
0:31:36 > 0:31:40to come through the winter on the poorest of diets,
0:31:40 > 0:31:46but have been able to nurture all this new life, too.
0:31:49 > 0:31:51Conditions here are so tough
0:31:51 > 0:31:54and the demands of the growing youngsters so great,
0:31:54 > 0:31:58females only give birth every second or third year.
0:32:08 > 0:32:13These births usually happen at night in tucked away places.
0:32:13 > 0:32:17But this baby has just arrived
0:32:17 > 0:32:21so recently the mother hasn't even had time to clean up.
0:32:24 > 0:32:27The new baby clings on tightly,
0:32:27 > 0:32:32perfectly placed to start absorbing all the tricks it will need to survive.
0:32:47 > 0:32:52At these higher altitudes, the wild cherry is only just coming into flower
0:32:52 > 0:32:55and the monkeys can't resist.
0:33:04 > 0:33:06Takayo is in her element.
0:33:07 > 0:33:12I learnt about these forest plants from my mother.
0:33:12 > 0:33:17Many of them are great delicacies, used in traditional cooking.
0:33:17 > 0:33:20But you have to know what you are doing.
0:33:20 > 0:33:23Some of them are extremely poisonous.
0:33:25 > 0:33:29The monkeys seem to be just as selective,
0:33:29 > 0:33:33knowledge they must start gathering almost from the day they are born.
0:33:38 > 0:33:42The privations of the winter are just a distant memory.
0:34:06 > 0:34:08The hot springs troop has experienced
0:34:08 > 0:34:09a flood of new life, too.
0:34:11 > 0:34:16Although some babies have clearly been delivered into more competent hands than others.
0:34:21 > 0:34:29Within a couple of weeks, youngsters start showing that insatiable curiosity for the world around them.
0:34:39 > 0:34:44A new arrival is introduced to one of the daily rituals here.
0:34:46 > 0:34:51But despite their clever ways, young monkeys are vulnerable...
0:34:52 > 0:34:56..and the transition into spring can often be a false dawn.
0:35:17 > 0:35:21Spring storms are common
0:35:21 > 0:35:24and can last for days.
0:35:55 > 0:35:58This mother has recently given birth.
0:36:01 > 0:36:04She couldn't have worse timing!
0:36:07 > 0:36:13It doesn't take many hours in the cold and wet to extinguish new life before it's really begun.
0:36:22 > 0:36:27After three days continual rain, it all feels very subdued here.
0:36:27 > 0:36:32Even the hot springs don't seem to offer much in the way of comfort.
0:36:33 > 0:36:39It's such a cruel twist that just as the trials of the winter are over,
0:36:39 > 0:36:44and there's plenty of food around, the monkeys must suffer like this.
0:36:47 > 0:36:51These cold, wet springs can be the final straw.
0:37:01 > 0:37:06As spring eases into summer, the combination of stifling heat
0:37:06 > 0:37:11and abundant water works wonders on the rich volcanic soils of the valley.
0:37:15 > 0:37:17Ripening crops are everywhere
0:37:17 > 0:37:20and that's good news for the urban troop,
0:37:20 > 0:37:22at least for the moment.
0:37:42 > 0:37:47Every young monkey in the troop is learning from the more experienced members of the gang.
0:38:09 > 0:38:12But each daring raid draws the monkeys closer
0:38:12 > 0:38:16to a more deadly confrontation with the increasingly frustrated farmers.
0:38:25 > 0:38:29Up in the mountains, the sun and rain have worked their magic, too.
0:38:32 > 0:38:38It's hard to believe that three months ago this was buried under snow.
0:38:38 > 0:38:43Now it feels more like the tropical forests of Africa, where I'm more used to working.
0:38:46 > 0:38:50The troop is back down at their old haunt by the river
0:38:50 > 0:38:55and they seem to be thriving, despite the recent storms.
0:38:55 > 0:39:00It's great to see the new additions so obviously full of the joys of life
0:39:00 > 0:39:02and being so independent.
0:39:04 > 0:39:09Despite their diminutive size, they've proved just how tough they are.
0:39:12 > 0:39:18The summer's bounty means even this troop can afford to take some rare time off.
0:39:21 > 0:39:27But for young males, the stark realities of life are never far away.
0:39:29 > 0:39:35This play-fighting is just practice for when they must battle their way up the hierarchy as adults.
0:40:07 > 0:40:10At this time of year,
0:40:10 > 0:40:14gathering food takes on a more leisurely air.
0:40:21 > 0:40:27In this relaxed atmosphere, watcher and watched suddenly stumble upon each other.
0:40:29 > 0:40:33It's taken almost a year,
0:40:33 > 0:40:37but it feels like this troop has finally accepted me being around.
0:40:40 > 0:40:45Even the mothers with their new babies don't seem bothered by me being here.
0:41:01 > 0:41:05All too soon, summer gives way to the chill of autumn.
0:41:32 > 0:41:34As the year turns,
0:41:34 > 0:41:38tensions in the hot springs troop seem to be escalating.
0:41:41 > 0:41:43The whole troop is on edge.
0:41:48 > 0:41:51Old allegiances are breaking down.
0:41:51 > 0:41:55There seems to be a shift in the balance of power.
0:41:55 > 0:41:59The top male doesn't seem to be getting the respect he once did.
0:42:02 > 0:42:08After three years as their favourite, the ruling females are rejecting him.
0:42:13 > 0:42:15It's a bad sign.
0:42:17 > 0:42:21And it's now the former second in command who is the one holding court.
0:42:31 > 0:42:34It shows just how powerful the sisterhood is.
0:42:37 > 0:42:40The old male keeps trying,
0:42:40 > 0:42:42but the females want nothing to do with him.
0:43:10 > 0:43:18His dramatic fall from grace reveals the downside to membership of this super-troop.
0:43:18 > 0:43:24With such unnaturally high numbers, there's always someone waiting to push you aside.
0:43:28 > 0:43:32He slips quietly from the troop to fend for himself,
0:43:32 > 0:43:34his future uncertain.
0:43:46 > 0:43:51The urban troop is feeling a different kind of pressure.
0:43:58 > 0:44:02These crops would set the monkeys up for the winter.
0:44:07 > 0:44:13But for farmers, seeing their harvest heading for the woods must be too much to bare.
0:44:19 > 0:44:23They call in local marksmen to hunt down the raiders,
0:44:23 > 0:44:27who pick up the trail almost immediately.
0:45:34 > 0:45:36GUNSHOT
0:45:37 > 0:45:43- GUNSHOT - The hunters prefer to move the monkeys on rather than kill them.
0:45:43 > 0:45:47But with such temptations right on their doorstep,
0:45:47 > 0:45:49they'll soon be back.
0:45:53 > 0:45:59Those farmers plagued by raiding monkeys have resorted to building huge traps.
0:46:05 > 0:46:10Baited with fruit, these can catch whole troops at a time.
0:46:22 > 0:46:25In this one small region of Japan,
0:46:25 > 0:46:31more than 1,500 monkeys are now killed as pests every year.
0:46:38 > 0:46:43As winter approaches once again, it's time for Takayo to reflect
0:46:43 > 0:46:46on what's she's learnt over this last year.
0:46:51 > 0:46:58I started out on this journey not really knowing much about snow monkeys.
0:47:00 > 0:47:07Getting to know these three groups over the last year has been an incredible experience.
0:47:10 > 0:47:17The three troops seem so different and are treated so differently by us,
0:47:17 > 0:47:21but they're really all the same.
0:47:21 > 0:47:28Each troop is just doing what snow monkeys do best, using their formidable ingenuity
0:47:28 > 0:47:32and adaptability to turn every situation that confronts them
0:47:32 > 0:47:36to its very best advantage.
0:47:38 > 0:47:44It's understandable that the hot springs troop are treated like celebrities.
0:47:44 > 0:47:49Their remarkable lifestyle is instantly appealing to us
0:47:49 > 0:47:53and has rightly made them world famous.
0:47:53 > 0:47:57But if we can so admire this one troop,
0:47:57 > 0:48:05then I think surely be should able to celebrate all Japan's snow monkeys.
