:05:18. > :05:28.You are good boys, yes, yes? After living in London for most of his

:05:28. > :05:30.

:05:30. > :05:35.career, he has recently moved back for good. His sons, Conor, and

:05:35. > :05:39.Tyrone, Mark enjoying life surrounded by family, including

:05:39. > :05:45.Darren's sister reeled sprays the boys. With financial security I

:05:45. > :05:55.unlucky, not just for me but for the boys, they a going to be fine.

:05:55. > :05:59.

:05:59. > :06:04.I feel incredibly fortunate to be Darren is getting ready to build

:06:04. > :06:13.what will be his dream house, on a site which he bought over 15 years

:06:13. > :06:18.ago. It goes all the way down over their, and that is where the house

:06:18. > :06:23.is going to be. It is a lot of work. It is a big site. It will be nice

:06:23. > :06:27.whenever it is all done. It is great. I know that this is not

:06:27. > :06:32.where I grew up, but Portrush is very special to me because my

:06:32. > :06:40.father started taking the up here when I was 12, playing golf at

:06:40. > :06:44.Royal Portrush. I can see the golf course and it is just nice. This is

:06:44. > :06:49.home, this will always be home, once we get it finished and get it

:06:49. > :06:53.done. The other house has been perfect in the meantime, but this

:06:53. > :06:59.one will be really nice. By the time we get it done and get it

:06:59. > :07:08.finished. It was on the links of Royal Portrush, where Darren Clarke

:07:08. > :07:18.shot to prominence as a teenager. After a glittering amateur career,

:07:18. > :07:21.

:07:21. > :07:27.he told professional, at the age of And it was not long before he

:07:27. > :07:33.became one of the world's best players. He famously beat the

:07:33. > :07:37.former world number one Tiger Woods in the year 2,000. Darren Clarke

:07:37. > :07:47.won many tournaments around the world and millions of pounds of

:07:47. > :07:53.

:07:53. > :08:02.prize money. But one thing eluded Supporting him every step of the

:08:02. > :08:07.way was his wife, heather, and their were many happy times. They

:08:07. > :08:10.built a life together in England, bringing up their boys. But the

:08:10. > :08:16.family's world was turned upside down when heavy was diagnosed with

:08:16. > :08:25.breast cancer at the end of 2001. She lost a brave battle with the

:08:25. > :08:29.influence almost five years later, aged 39. -- with the illness. Six

:08:29. > :08:37.weeks after heather's death, Darren Clarke made an emotional return to

:08:37. > :08:41.golf in Ireland. There will never be anything that I had to do after

:08:41. > :08:48.the Ryder cup 2006 that will be more difficult but get it fulfilled

:08:48. > :08:54.what I wanted to do, so that was as tough as it will ever be.

:08:54. > :09:01.inspired you have to beat America in the Ryder cup. -- inspired

:09:01. > :09:06.Europe. I expected to play, but the feeling has never been more thrust

:09:06. > :09:11.upon me and I had to deal with it. I had no idea how difficult it was

:09:11. > :09:21.going to be. I look back and I think, that is one of my proudest

:09:21. > :09:26.

:09:26. > :09:33.moments in my golfing career, to The Open Championship is called's

:09:33. > :09:36.biggest event. -- golf's biggest event. Darren Clarke arrived as a

:09:36. > :09:41.rank outsider despite winning a tournament earlier in the year.

:09:41. > :09:46.Most of the focus was on his fellow countryman, Rory McIlroy, playing

:09:46. > :09:55.in his first event since winning the US Open, four weeks earlier.

:09:55. > :10:01.The but the favourite's challenge was blown off course. Darren Clarke

:10:01. > :10:11.now, on the tenth. It is Darren Clarke who excels, finding his form

:10:11. > :10:13.

:10:13. > :10:20.of old. Wonderfully struck! This for the second successive 68.

:10:20. > :10:26.Beautiful, beautiful! He is joint leader at end of the second round

:10:26. > :10:31.and one shot ahead of the chasing pack, after a day three. I think

:10:31. > :10:36.that is just about the best shot we have seen today. Darren has had a

:10:36. > :10:46.couple of opportunities to win the Open before, but he blew his chance.

:10:46. > :10:49.

:10:49. > :10:56.Can he hold is now on the final day this time? -- hold his nerve.

:10:56. > :11:01.fans were wonderful. The Matt was much shouting and roaring, and

:11:01. > :11:05.stuff. But at the same time, I was cool, calm and collected and I knew

:11:05. > :11:13.exactly what I needed to do. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final

:11:13. > :11:23.day of the 148 Open Championship. On the tee, from Northern Ireland,

:11:23. > :11:23.

:11:23. > :11:33.Darren Clarke! My thought was that I would go out and play my best,

:11:33. > :12:11.

:12:11. > :12:21.The the course give me a couple of breaks back in my direction on

:12:21. > :12:22.

:12:22. > :12:27.Sunday. Quickly over it. No doubt. He three holes to go, four shots

:12:27. > :12:37.clear, and the might rise again, and the Claret Jug gets closer

:12:37. > :12:39.

:12:39. > :12:43.still. The crowd was mad shouting and roaring and stuff, and then my

:12:43. > :12:51.mental arithmetic went out of the window, and I can down a bit and I

:12:51. > :13:01.thought, I have got four putts from you to the Open Championship. --

:13:01. > :13:04.

:13:04. > :13:13.from here. My father was there. Alison was standing right behind

:13:13. > :13:17.moment that. -- behind mum and dad. I have been they are few a lot of

:13:17. > :13:22.ups and downs in his golfing career, and I have seen how disappointed he

:13:22. > :13:25.gets when it does not work out, and I always try to be positive and say,

:13:25. > :13:29.don't look back, look for what, you don't know what is coming round the

:13:29. > :13:34.corner, so I always try to be as positive as they possibly could.

:13:34. > :13:40.There is somebody up there watching down as well, so, to everybody,

:13:40. > :13:44.thank you very much. Heather was looking down at me, saying, I told

:13:44. > :13:51.you so, I told you so, and I have got Alice and now, telling me, you

:13:51. > :13:56.can do it, you can do it. -- Allison now. She would be very

:13:56. > :14:05.proud of the two boys, and I think that is the most important thing.

:14:05. > :14:11.And Darren reveals one Clare who has congratulated him from long

:14:11. > :14:16.distance. It was great that Tiger Woods would take time out to text a

:14:16. > :14:26.mate and say, go about it this way, go about it that way. He was very

:14:26. > :14:54.

:14:54. > :15:04.Feeling good, Darren? Yes. Yes! Go on! One of my oldest mates, from

:15:04. > :15:09.

:15:09. > :15:19.a very, very long time from South It was all about the Claret Jug. He

:15:19. > :15:32.

:15:32. > :15:42.will have time to Saviour it later. Well done, again. Thank you very

:15:42. > :15:48.much. Hello, son. Well done, darling. For Darren's mum and dad,

:15:48. > :15:52.the sacrifices they made have all been worthwhile. We didn't have

:15:52. > :15:55.holidays or anything like that. We had to put all our money behind the

:15:55. > :15:59.travelling, the expenses, and everything else. But, I mean, at

:15:59. > :16:04.the end of the day, it was well worth it. He's paid me back lots

:16:04. > :16:09.and lots of times, you know, over the years. This here means more

:16:09. > :16:14.than money or anything else could do. It's just - we are so thrilled

:16:14. > :16:18.and delighted for him. I've had lots of fantastic moments with

:16:18. > :16:26.Darren winning tournaments, all these years since he's turned pro,

:16:26. > :16:32.this is just the pinnacle. This is just fantastic. We're just

:16:32. > :16:36.delighted. That's a good picture. Alison, your go. We had it the

:16:36. > :16:43.wrong way round. That's a great picture there. What a pretty

:16:43. > :16:48.picture. Thank you. It's all a bit of a haze. As you will probably see

:16:48. > :16:55.when you are reviewing the programme. Is it was a brilliant

:16:55. > :17:05.haze. It was... You know, you ask anybody if they strive to get their

:17:05. > :17:08.

:17:08. > :17:18.lifetime goal, and they get it, it's almost like, "wow, I did that".

:17:18. > :17:18.

:17:18. > :17:27.OK. Shoot. Fantastic. Thank you. Open Champion. He will prove to be

:17:27. > :17:34.a most popular winner. His close bond with the fans was sealed...

:17:34. > :17:39.We've had a great night, loads of fun. All great. Looking forward to

:17:39. > :17:44.get home to Northern Ireland? Get home and see my boys. I want

:17:44. > :17:50.them to hold the jug. When they get hold of it that will be great.

:17:50. > :17:59.That's a proper legend. Before he goes home, Darren returns to the

:17:59. > :18:05.Royal St George's course for a photo call and a press conference.

:18:05. > :18:11.Is there nobody here? Well done, son. Thank you very much. Do you

:18:11. > :18:19.mind a photo? Shoot. He has been branded, labelled as an

:18:19. > :18:22.underachiever all his life, only because he was so good. If a normal

:18:22. > :18:28.achiever had achieved what he achieved they would be an achiever.

:18:28. > :18:31.It will be an interesting time much he may go on and win lots now. If

:18:31. > :18:37.he actually just admits now he's the champion golfer of the year, it

:18:37. > :18:45.could be a great time. How much sleep did you get last night?

:18:45. > :18:49.I've not been to bed yet. It's now 9.10 am, I probably won't get any

:18:49. > :18:53.sleep until tomorrow at some stage. He put his time. In he is popular

:18:53. > :18:58.in South Africa, Japan, Asia. He has put his time in and gone to

:18:58. > :19:02.these places. You only have to see the range of texts I had, and where

:19:02. > :19:06.they where from, and realise how many friends he made all over the

:19:06. > :19:12.world. To be the Open champion as well he will have a great time.

:19:12. > :19:17.That was all right. That was good. Look up there. Look up there. Still

:19:17. > :19:22.there. How does that feel seeing that? That's OK. You see that bit

:19:22. > :19:26.at the top Open Championship. That's the biggest, best tournament

:19:26. > :19:30.of the world. To win is just fantastic. Darren is getting --

:19:30. > :19:35.getting to 40 and 42 when you start preparing for life at the end of

:19:35. > :19:40.his career. So, in fact, this weekend he should have commented.

:19:40. > :19:47.The deal was, if he missed the cut or played early on the weekend he

:19:47. > :19:52.would commentate in the afternoon, which pass a nice break for him.

:19:52. > :19:58.Course design. Ryder Cup captaincy. Why should he be Ryder Cup captain,

:19:58. > :20:03.he will want to be playing. achieved it for so many people. The

:20:03. > :20:10.people that wrote me off a few years ago, to prove them wrong.

:20:10. > :20:14.Which I did. But, most of all, to prove it to myself that I always

:20:14. > :20:17.knew that I had the talent to become a Major champion. I always

:20:17. > :20:22.hoped I would be in a position where I could become a Major

:20:22. > :20:32.champion. And I did it. I got myself in the position. I did what

:20:32. > :20:34.

:20:34. > :20:41.I had to do. APPLAUSE

:20:41. > :20:46.Thank you very much, thank you. Have you been on the Guinness?

:20:46. > :20:56.haven't slept yet. Thanks again. You are welcome. Thank you very

:20:56. > :20:58.

:20:58. > :21:01.much, thank you. Thank you. Cheers. Darren is flying home on the same

:21:01. > :21:11.private jet which brought Graeme McDowell and illicit back to

:21:11. > :21:12.

:21:12. > :21:17.Northern Ireland after their won their Major championships. Winning

:21:17. > :21:26.tournaments around the world, which I've been fortunate to do, that's

:21:26. > :21:30.great. That's wonderful. Ching, ching. There only is Four Majors a

:21:30. > :21:35.year. They are what they want. To get my hands on one, this one, of

:21:35. > :21:39.all of them, is very, very special. You can be a good player, and win

:21:39. > :21:49.whatever you want, you are not really a great player until you win

:21:49. > :21:51.

:21:51. > :21:57.at least one Major. Did I doubt my ability to contend and challenge

:21:57. > :22:02.for them? No. Did I think I was going to win one? No idea. In my

:22:02. > :22:12.hearts of hearts I knew my time was running out to try and win one. I

:22:12. > :22:35.

:22:35. > :22:39.managed to get over the hurdle. I I had 300 odd text messages. I'm

:22:39. > :22:47.slowing going them right now. Reading what everyone is saying. A

:22:47. > :22:51.little bit emotional some of them. Blah, blah, it's great. Just home

:22:52. > :22:59.as Open Champion is a bit different, isn't it? Seeing the boys and let

:22:59. > :23:09.them get their hands on this, it will be just brilliant. Let them

:23:09. > :23:17.

:23:17. > :23:27.see what I've tried to do. Just get There's the two of them. Look at

:23:27. > :23:27.

:23:27. > :24:25.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 198 seconds

:24:25. > :24:33.What about ya? Well done. Well done. My boys are, they are the about all

:24:33. > :24:37.and end all. Playing golf is fantastic, you get to travel all

:24:37. > :24:42.over the world doing it, but they're more important than any

:24:42. > :24:48.golf tournament. Very emotional to see the kids and stuff, but

:24:48. > :24:54.brilliant. It's going in my bedroom. Where are you going to put it?

:24:54. > :25:00.bedroom. He did. He did. To have them, I don't know, watching it and

:25:00. > :25:06.coming back home, giving them the trophy and Connor sleeping with it

:25:06. > :25:11.on his pillow, brilliant for them. What does that say. Dad. Dad. As if

:25:11. > :25:17.any parent will say, if you can make your kids proud that is what

:25:17. > :25:22.anyone will try to do. I think that's what I managed to do. Hold

:25:23. > :25:32.it up. Darren's sister, and the rest of the family, are also

:25:32. > :25:36.waiting to congratulate him. Great. So proud. Well done uncle Darren.

:25:36. > :25:41.Thank you. It's good for them to have something positive to happen,

:25:41. > :25:46.and I'm sure this will hold a very special place in their hearts for a

:25:46. > :25:50.long, long time. Fantastic. Delighted for you. Delighted.

:25:51. > :25:55.Brilliant. We know how much it means to him and how much he's

:25:55. > :25:58.missing Heather. She would have been a part of it here. Time has

:25:58. > :26:04.moved on. He's always worked hard over the last five years. He had a

:26:04. > :26:10.slump in his golf. He always worked as hard as he ever did. It's great

:26:10. > :26:14.to see him turn this corner. He has Alison now he his fiancee life, I

:26:14. > :26:19.think, just couldn't get any better. It was a sad time in his life to

:26:19. > :26:23.lose Heather, the mum of his two boys. I didn't know him and I met

:26:23. > :26:27.him a considerable time afterwards. I think he had time to grieve. He's

:26:27. > :26:30.always talked about her. He is very open. We have an honest

:26:30. > :26:35.relationship. It's good to communicate much we will always

:26:35. > :26:40.talk to the boys about mum and who they look like and all the rest.

:26:40. > :26:43.She's never very far away. Lots of words of advice at the time saying

:26:43. > :26:48.your kids are unbelievibly resilience. They will always

:26:48. > :26:54.remember and move on with things. They have done. I'm incredibly

:26:54. > :26:58.proud of them. To have them looking after them along with their own two

:26:58. > :27:02.kids is wonderful. The two of them get on with Alison unbelievibly

:27:02. > :27:09.well. I mean, they hug her and kiss her before they go to sleep and all

:27:09. > :27:18.that sort of stuff. I'm lucky to have a very good setup at home now

:27:18. > :27:23.again. Connor with it over his shoulder. It's all for them. Make

:27:23. > :27:32.it is worthwhile? So much more meaningful when you see that, isn't

:27:32. > :27:41.it? Oh, Connor. Are you not letting it go, are you? No. Give it a hug.

:27:41. > :27:46.Give it a kiss. You're not getting it back. They can have it.

:27:46. > :27:50.imagine you don't care? No. It's all for them, not for me. It's for

:27:50. > :27:55.them. They've been waiting for great anticipation from last night.

:27:55. > :28:00.Waiting for their daddy to come home. All morning it was, "what

:28:00. > :28:04.time is daddy coming home? Where is he? Has he left England" they were

:28:04. > :28:07.waiting patiently for him much they are delighted to see him and see

:28:08. > :28:11.the Claret Jug. It means a lot. They are all golfers. The four boys

:28:11. > :28:15.all golf themselves. They are so much into the golf. They know what

:28:15. > :28:20.it means to their dad as well, it's fantastic. The game of stkpwofl

:28:20. > :28:25.very fickle. It gives it takes away. It gives and it takes away. I've

:28:26. > :28:29.had my share of down times. Especially, of late, you know,

:28:29. > :28:34.Alison has been there for me through thick and thin thin. She

:28:34. > :28:38.knows the way I've been feeling as does Andrea and Davey and the kids

:28:38. > :28:43.and stuff. They come in here, maybe I'm not in the best of humour and

:28:43. > :28:51.stuff, they can sense it. But, you battle on and battle on and battle

:28:51. > :29:01.on. You look at it now, that's sitting here. The celebrations

:29:01. > :29:02.

:29:02. > :29:09.aren't quite finished yet. You are staying here. The last golfer from

:29:09. > :29:19.Northern Ireland to win the Open was another from Portrush Fred

:29:19. > :29:27.

:29:27. > :29:34.Great to be warmer going, back in the world of the best people, and

:29:34. > :29:38.having a bit of fun. We will let the Claret Jug sit here in the

:29:38. > :29:48.middle of the table. I'm seeing the picture of Fred Daly there holding

:29:48. > :30:21.

:30:21. > :30:26.the Claret Jug. It is fantastic. The next morning, back at Darren's

:30:26. > :30:36.House, everyone is preparing for his own coming to Portrush golf

:30:36. > :30:36.

:30:36. > :31:21.Apology for the loss of subtitles for 198 seconds

:31:21. > :31:31.Darren, how are you feeling about getting down to Portrush today?

:31:31. > :31:34.
