0:00:03 > 0:00:07There have been people who have an ability, for whatever reason,

0:00:07 > 0:00:13whether it's within them, or what they do or what they say, to inspire others.

0:00:13 > 0:00:15And Severiano, whether he knew it or not,

0:00:15 > 0:00:19certainly created that image and we loved him for it.

0:00:21 > 0:00:25Ladies and gentlemen, it is with great pleasure we welcome,

0:00:25 > 0:00:29live from his home in Pedrena, Spain, Severiano Ballesteros.

0:00:37 > 0:00:41At the 2009 Sports Personality Of The Year

0:00:41 > 0:00:44I had the privilege to make that special introduction.

0:00:44 > 0:00:50Looking back, perhaps it wasn't so much an introduction as a farewell.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53This would be a last ovation for Seve.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01There are many ways to play golf.

0:01:01 > 0:01:07Not necessarily has to be Pinehurst or Augusta or St Andrews.

0:01:07 > 0:01:12You can build your own golf course by using your imagination, that's all.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15Simple as that. And you can have fun!

0:01:23 > 0:01:26He brought so much passion and joy to the game of golf.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29He was European golf. He was the man.

0:01:30 > 0:01:33Suddenly, a matador arrived on the golf course.

0:01:33 > 0:01:37He was arrogant like one, he looked like one, he had the face of one.

0:01:37 > 0:01:38He looked fantastic.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44So good looking it wasn't true.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46He was like Georgie Best in his prime.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48He was just so good looking then.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50You'd see women just fall at their feet.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55When I first saw him he was still in his prime.

0:01:55 > 0:02:00I was just watching him and Ollie go round the golf course. I wanted to learn it by watching.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04That lovely smile was there for one reason,

0:02:04 > 0:02:07because he has a great sense of humour.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09Stay still, if you don't mind, please.

0:02:09 > 0:02:10I know you're nervous, but I am too.

0:02:12 > 0:02:16Apart from an inspirational golfer, I remember Seve as a vibrant character.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20He was the same man on the golf course as he was off it.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22I call him the ultimate warrior.

0:02:22 > 0:02:28He never talked about the worst, but I'm convinced that he knew.

0:02:28 > 0:02:35And he always tried to transmit patience and positive things

0:02:35 > 0:02:37to everyone.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40He always tried to keep fighting,

0:02:40 > 0:02:44going places, promoting his foundations.

0:02:44 > 0:02:48My relationship with him has been a very special one

0:02:48 > 0:02:50through all these years.

0:02:50 > 0:02:55He's been my mentor and I owe him a lot.

0:02:56 > 0:03:00For me it's emotional to talk about him.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03Because of him we know golf in Spain.

0:03:15 > 0:03:20Seve died at the age of 54 in early May 2011

0:03:20 > 0:03:23after a two and a half year fight against cancer.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27His funeral took place in his small hometown of Pedrena,

0:03:27 > 0:03:30near Santander, in Northern Spain.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32SPEAKS SPANISH

0:03:36 > 0:03:42Welcome to Pedrena, my brothers and sisters, my friends

0:03:42 > 0:03:44in Christ.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46It's a very sad day for golf.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49He was a complete legend. He was the king.

0:03:49 > 0:03:54The scattering of his ashes at the house was heartbreaking.

0:03:54 > 0:03:56Just heartbreaking.

0:03:58 > 0:03:59He was just a kid...

0:04:01 > 0:04:02..in his village...

0:04:10 > 0:04:14I think it's a fabulous tribute and a fabulous end

0:04:14 > 0:04:15to a fantastic life

0:04:15 > 0:04:17that the whole town, the townspeople,

0:04:17 > 0:04:19turned out here in Pedrena in Spain.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22I think it's a marvellous tribute to him.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25I knew that would happen.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27And, er...

0:04:29 > 0:04:31The laugh is they used to ring the bell

0:04:31 > 0:04:35for every time he won a tournament. You could imagine the bell ringer,

0:04:35 > 0:04:39he'd have one arm that was that big and the other one was a little skinny arm.

0:04:39 > 0:04:44Excuse me, I'm trying to make fun of it for two seconds.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48Seve has got some peace now and I hope he's up there,

0:04:48 > 0:04:50Seve, getting the tour ready for us

0:04:50 > 0:04:54and I'm hoping to have some battles with him again.

0:05:06 > 0:05:10A fortnight later, I joined up with the cream of European golf

0:05:10 > 0:05:13who'd come to honour Seve at Wentworth.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16He was their inspiration, the winner of five Majors

0:05:16 > 0:05:19and king of the Ryder Cup.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21The first European to win the Masters,

0:05:21 > 0:05:25the youngest player to win the Open in the 20th Century.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28They'd also come to raise money for his foundation

0:05:28 > 0:05:30and the fight against brain cancer.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33Their rallying cry, "Ole, Seve!"

0:05:33 > 0:05:36Ole!

0:05:36 > 0:05:39It was a grand day out for the golfing community

0:05:39 > 0:05:41and the Ballesteros family.

0:05:41 > 0:05:43Ole!

0:05:45 > 0:05:49BOTH SPEAK SPANISH

0:05:53 > 0:05:56- So, how are you doing? - Good, thank you.

0:05:56 > 0:05:57Well, it's difficult times.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01I feel Seve is around.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03Obviously, he was very young

0:06:03 > 0:06:06and very unlucky to suffer that disease.

0:06:08 > 0:06:10He was an extraordinary man

0:06:10 > 0:06:15and he's one of those people whose name will be alive forever.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18He'll be immortal in many ways. People will always remember him

0:06:18 > 0:06:21and always see the images, those memorable images of him.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27At the age of 10 and in his first competition

0:06:27 > 0:06:33for caddies at Royal Pedrena, after nine holes he was 51 over par.

0:06:33 > 0:06:37It was a quiet start for someone who would one day be doing this.

0:06:45 > 0:06:50His first shots were struck with an ancient three iron handed down by his brother Manuel.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53Rusty old club, but a golden touch.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56This was golf the Seve way.

0:07:02 > 0:07:06It never ceases to amaze you! It's just a master at work.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09Oh, you!

0:07:09 > 0:07:12I hope you think this is good stuff!

0:07:13 > 0:07:15It just happens naturally.

0:07:15 > 0:07:17My personality is that way.

0:07:17 > 0:07:19Everything comes naturally.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22Nothing is an act.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24It just happens.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26Where's the caddie?

0:07:28 > 0:07:30Caddie!

0:07:30 > 0:07:31It reminds me of Spain.

0:07:31 > 0:07:35Everybody is walking on the fairways, on the greens.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39You all know how well Seve hits a golf ball. I bet you will have never seen him do this.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41Just watch this very carefully.

0:07:41 > 0:07:43I was in France at an exhibition.

0:07:46 > 0:07:48This is true. There's no trick there.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50Even myself, I am surprised.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52Once upon a time somebody asked me

0:07:52 > 0:07:55from a newspaper to do one of those crazy little interviews they do

0:07:55 > 0:08:00and they said, "If you weren't you, Des, which sports star would you like to be in the world?"

0:08:00 > 0:08:03"Without doubt, Seve Ballesteros." They said, "Why?"

0:08:03 > 0:08:05I said, "First of all I'd like to play golf like him.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07"Secondly, I'd like to look like him.

0:08:07 > 0:08:11"Thirdly, I speak a little Spanish, I'd like to speak Spanish like him.

0:08:11 > 0:08:13"Fourth, I'd like to speak English like him."

0:08:13 > 0:08:16He's got that wonderful... He was doing an advert at the time.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18You know me, these guys do.

0:08:18 > 0:08:20They told me I'm too old to learn this game.

0:08:20 > 0:08:22HE SPEAKS SPANISH

0:08:22 > 0:08:24He says maybe I should take up golf.

0:08:24 > 0:08:27The slogan was, don't leave home without it, but he used to say,

0:08:27 > 0:08:29- MOCKS ACCENT - "Don't leave home without it."

0:08:29 > 0:08:31Don't leave home without it.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35When he did first leave home, what he took with him

0:08:35 > 0:08:40was not as important as what he was leaving behind.

0:08:40 > 0:08:45People must remember that I gave away my teenage years, you know?

0:08:45 > 0:08:49That's a big price to pay, you know?

0:08:51 > 0:08:54I'm not complaining, I'm just saying that this is what happened.

0:08:54 > 0:08:59Seve was born in April 1957 into the Spain of General Franco,

0:08:59 > 0:09:02a Spain isolated from the rest of Europe.

0:09:02 > 0:09:07Beyond the Pyrenees, golf was no national sport, more a family affair.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10Seve Ballesteros started out as a young man

0:09:10 > 0:09:12with brothers in the world of golf.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15His uncle, Ramon Sota, had played very well in the Masters.

0:09:15 > 0:09:19He wasn't an academic, as such.

0:09:19 > 0:09:23He was not going to be a surgeon or a lawyer, he had golf in his hand.

0:09:23 > 0:09:27He had golf in his blood and in his hands and that's how he was going to make a living.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30When he was a kid all he had was a three iron.

0:09:30 > 0:09:34He' would knock balls over his farmhouse where he lived.

0:09:34 > 0:09:37His mother and father used to go crazy, evidently,

0:09:37 > 0:09:40because he'd be cutting a three iron up in the air

0:09:40 > 0:09:43like an eight iron over the farm and then rushing round the back

0:09:43 > 0:09:45and playing them back again.

0:09:45 > 0:09:48TRANSLATION He would play by the light of the moon.

0:09:48 > 0:09:52He would go to the course carrying a golf club and play until midnight.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58- TRANSLATION - I remember one time Seve was supposed to be looking after

0:09:58 > 0:10:02my cows, but they followed him on to the golf course.

0:10:02 > 0:10:07Another time I was standing just here and he hit a golf ball towards me which hit me in the face!

0:10:11 > 0:10:15Aged 16 he turned pro, but three years later,

0:10:15 > 0:10:21in the long hot summer of 1976, Seve was playing in the Open at Birkdale.

0:10:21 > 0:10:25After three rounds, he was the leader by two shots.

0:10:25 > 0:10:26Seve, I think, was 19 years old

0:10:26 > 0:10:29and give Johnny Miller a run for his money.

0:10:29 > 0:10:32Playing the last round, on the first tee

0:10:32 > 0:10:34I was convinced that I was going to win.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37A lot of them feel out of place when they get into contention or...

0:10:38 > 0:10:40..close to winning, but he never did.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43He just thought he belonged there.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48Oh ho! This really is good fun, isn't it?

0:10:48 > 0:10:51I didn't know the British Open was so important.

0:10:51 > 0:10:57Just to have so much attention from the media and from the people,

0:10:57 > 0:11:00I liked it! I enjoyed it.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03But I started hitting the ball all over the place

0:11:03 > 0:11:05and then reality showed up!

0:11:10 > 0:11:12There they go.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15And where does Ballesteros go?

0:11:15 > 0:11:17When you're a teenager and you've the chance to win your first huge

0:11:17 > 0:11:22championship, the odds of playing good Sunday golf are pretty remote,

0:11:22 > 0:11:25and that's what happened to Seve. Those towering high drives,

0:11:25 > 0:11:28by the time they got on the ground were way out in the sand dunes.

0:11:28 > 0:11:34It was funny. He didn't speak any English until he was six shots ahead

0:11:34 > 0:11:38on 14, and then all this sudden he started speaking Spanish with me!

0:11:38 > 0:11:40I didn't know he was could speak Spanish!

0:11:40 > 0:11:44I had taken Spanish in school, so I communicated somehow,

0:11:44 > 0:11:45or he understood it.

0:11:45 > 0:11:49He said, well, you know, and you have to finish good on the last three holes

0:11:49 > 0:11:54because Jack Nicklaus is already in the clubhouse and if you play well

0:11:54 > 0:11:58the last three holes you can still finish second, is what he said.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04Absolutely marvellous shot. That's not possible!

0:12:04 > 0:12:07He didn't win, but came second in style.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10That great for chip and run between the bunkers on 18,

0:12:10 > 0:12:12man, that's a great shot!

0:12:12 > 0:12:13I was very impressed with that!

0:12:17 > 0:12:20SPEAKS SPANISH

0:12:21 > 0:12:24In any language, golf had a new entertainer.

0:12:24 > 0:12:28Seve was box office, sport and showbiz.

0:12:30 > 0:12:31Hi, Bruce, how are you?

0:12:31 > 0:12:34- How are you? What a day this is. - Lovely day.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37I mean, it shows a great turnout for him.

0:12:37 > 0:12:39Well, he deserves it, he deserves it.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42He'll be up there watching what's going on, you know?

0:12:42 > 0:12:45- You knew him, didn't you? - What's that?- You knew Seve?

0:12:45 > 0:12:47I played with him many, many times.

0:12:49 > 0:12:52A partner like Seve Ballesteros, I mean, what more do you want?

0:12:52 > 0:12:54This is a very tricky one.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01- I think it's a little bit in the mind, also.- Yeah.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03Did he teach you a bit?

0:13:03 > 0:13:08Well, the thing he taught me is, and it's a thing I don't do enough

0:13:08 > 0:13:11and I think we should all do, is positive thinking.

0:13:11 > 0:13:14He was a great positive thinker, and he did say to me, "Bruce," he said,

0:13:14 > 0:13:19"I never play a shot unless I can see it. If I can see it..."

0:13:19 > 0:13:22He said, "If I can't see it, it won't hit a good shot."

0:13:22 > 0:13:26- Did you ever see a shot? - Yes, but they always went in the bushes or in the water!

0:13:28 > 0:13:33He showed us green side bunker shots with a three iron.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36We couldn't get it out with big wedges like

0:13:36 > 0:13:40a big shovel, a spade, and get it out.

0:13:40 > 0:13:42And he'd nip them.

0:13:42 > 0:13:46My first memories of Seve are he was in a bunker and, er...

0:13:47 > 0:13:50..he was hitting these amazing bunker shots

0:13:50 > 0:13:52and the ball looked like they were putts.

0:13:52 > 0:13:53They're almost going in.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56I'm like, "This is impressive!" So I just sit there and watch.

0:13:56 > 0:14:00We start talking and the he said,

0:14:00 > 0:14:02"climb in the bunker and let me see your bunker game."

0:14:02 > 0:14:09I hit a shot. I was happy to get on the green and I thought it was good.

0:14:09 > 0:14:14He said, "Why does the ball spin, it spins to the right?"

0:14:14 > 0:14:17I'm like, "Well, I cut across it." He said, "No, no, no, no."

0:14:17 > 0:14:18You've got to read the putt

0:14:18 > 0:14:22and it's got to roll into the hole. I'm like, "Roll in the hole!"

0:14:22 > 0:14:25I'm trying to get close enough to make a putt, and he's thinking about holing it!

0:14:25 > 0:14:28This is a different ball game! Then we had a contest.

0:14:28 > 0:14:33I just got my ass kicked with a guy using a three iron. He just schooled me.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36And I'm, like, "I have so far to go!"

0:14:36 > 0:14:38You enjoyed being with him.

0:14:38 > 0:14:39You loved playing with him.

0:14:39 > 0:14:43- MOCK SPANISH ACCENT - Jimmy, I don't think you do this right.

0:14:43 > 0:14:45You put the hand here and do this.

0:14:45 > 0:14:48Put the head down.

0:14:49 > 0:14:52Oh, great shot. That's a good shot.

0:14:53 > 0:14:56There's certain people in life have this little

0:14:56 > 0:14:58aura around them.

0:14:58 > 0:15:02Sinatra had it, Elvis Presley had it, Georgie Best had it and he had it.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05It just oozed from him.

0:15:05 > 0:15:08You see it in the world of show business, in the world of film,

0:15:08 > 0:15:13somebody has something which is just a little bit extra than them.

0:15:13 > 0:15:15I'm not even sure he knew he had it.

0:15:15 > 0:15:19When you did meet him, I mean, he gave you that look in the eye, you know?

0:15:19 > 0:15:22He was just a wonderful guy. And all the women melted around the place.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25One person I was looking forward to meeting was Seve.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28By gosh, he didn't disappoint. I can tell you where it was.

0:15:28 > 0:15:33It was in the hotel at Carnoustie in 1999 and Seve was coming out of

0:15:33 > 0:15:37his bedroom door with his young son and I was walking down the corridor.

0:15:37 > 0:15:38And he introduced himself.

0:15:38 > 0:15:41He knew who I was, for some reason, and he said to his son,

0:15:41 > 0:15:45"This is the new chief," and laughed and walked away. It was magical.

0:15:45 > 0:15:48It put me at my ease. I was quite nervous about meeting him.

0:15:48 > 0:15:52In 1979, in the Open at Lytham,

0:15:52 > 0:15:55golf's new pin up was in contention again.

0:15:55 > 0:16:00The Open was, I think, where you got the best pictures of Seve.

0:16:00 > 0:16:02Something about playing in Britain,

0:16:02 > 0:16:06he treated it like his spiritual golfing home.

0:16:08 > 0:16:11As we were going out on the last day, after about six holes

0:16:11 > 0:16:13he looked at the leaderboard and it kept changing.

0:16:13 > 0:16:17And he said, "The one with the biggest heart will win."

0:16:17 > 0:16:20And I thought, "Well, you mean you, don't you!"

0:16:24 > 0:16:25What a start!

0:16:27 > 0:16:30Oh, what a beauty! Well, well, well, well, well!

0:16:30 > 0:16:32Oh, again!

0:16:32 > 0:16:37He really is charged up. I suppose this is what it means by having your adrenalin flowing.

0:16:37 > 0:16:43I became very famous as being the Open Championship playing from the car park and making birdies.

0:16:43 > 0:16:45In reality, it's never been that way.

0:16:45 > 0:16:48Golf is not how, it's how many, you know?

0:16:48 > 0:16:50It doesn't make any difference to me.

0:16:56 > 0:16:59That's perfect. Pin high.

0:16:59 > 0:17:0420 or so feet to the right of the flag.

0:17:04 > 0:17:05Somebody came out.

0:17:05 > 0:17:07Two men came out and threw their arms around you

0:17:07 > 0:17:10- when you came off the green. Who were they?- My brothers.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12All the brothers are here.

0:17:16 > 0:17:20I don't think I'm going to sleep very well tonight, but I don't care.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23To have my three brothers there with me and supporting me

0:17:23 > 0:17:28all the week, and when I won and just seeing all of them

0:17:28 > 0:17:31running through the green

0:17:31 > 0:17:36and giving me a big hug, and I saw my brother crying, I mean,

0:17:36 > 0:17:41then I realised that I did something very important.

0:17:51 > 0:17:55Have you met my sons? Sergio and Roberto.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58My other son. Jaime. He's the second.

0:17:58 > 0:18:02Gary Lineker. Barcelona.

0:18:02 > 0:18:05- Yeah, I've seen you on TV.- It's an important day for the family.

0:18:05 > 0:18:07Very important, very important.

0:18:07 > 0:18:09Very, very important.

0:18:09 > 0:18:13This is obviously what Seve wanted.

0:18:13 > 0:18:17He wanted to try and find a cure for this thing.

0:18:17 > 0:18:18Yeah, yeah.

0:18:18 > 0:18:20I'm very sad.

0:18:27 > 0:18:29BOTH SPEAK SPANISH

0:18:35 > 0:18:37Open champion, now for the Masters.

0:18:37 > 0:18:40Always a special time.

0:18:40 > 0:18:42Every year my birthday is during the Masters.

0:18:42 > 0:18:45Sometimes at the beginning of the week,

0:18:45 > 0:18:47sometimes in the tournament.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50It's a nice way to gain age, you know?

0:18:50 > 0:18:53He went to Augusta as Open champion.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56He battled his way through people signing autographs

0:18:56 > 0:18:59and he eventually made his way up to where I was standing,

0:18:59 > 0:19:01saw me, came over, held out his right fist.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04So I instinctively held out my hands and into it he dropped at least

0:19:04 > 0:19:07half a dozen, maybe eight, pieces of paper.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10And on each paper was a girl's name and a telephone number!

0:19:10 > 0:19:15And I looked at him and he looked at me, and then he said, these people are crazy, eh?

0:19:15 > 0:19:16And we both laughed.

0:19:16 > 0:19:20And then, rather meanly I thought, he took them all back!

0:19:20 > 0:19:23He had that effect. He was just magnetic.

0:19:23 > 0:19:26And dead solid, perfect, yet again!

0:19:26 > 0:19:29That was probably my best game

0:19:29 > 0:19:32in my whole career for one week.

0:19:33 > 0:19:36He sure can't be accused of backing off.

0:19:36 > 0:19:38And that's a magnificent blow.

0:19:38 > 0:19:42To become the first European to win the Masters, it was something special, you know?

0:19:42 > 0:19:46Because the Americans always believed that it was not possible

0:19:46 > 0:19:52for any European to win the Masters, it makes me feel very proud.

0:19:52 > 0:19:56Severiano Ballesteros, son of a farmer, youngest of four

0:19:56 > 0:20:00golfing brothers and still living under house where he was born.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03The youngest winner of the Masters and the first from Europe.

0:20:04 > 0:20:08When he won the Masters I was one of seven British journalists

0:20:08 > 0:20:11who were invited to his rented house to help celebrate that victory.

0:20:11 > 0:20:16He looked terrific with his green blazer on, so I said something like, "You look so healthy,"

0:20:16 > 0:20:19you know, "if you were a labrador you'd have a wet nose."

0:20:19 > 0:20:21And he said, "You think I'm healthy? Come with me."

0:20:21 > 0:20:24And we went into the kitchen and the kitchen had a door that went into

0:20:24 > 0:20:28the garage and they'd taken the door off and in its place was a trapeze.

0:20:28 > 0:20:32And he said I must hang from this every morning for 20, 25 minutes

0:20:32 > 0:20:34to try to ease the pain in my back.

0:20:34 > 0:20:37So even then, at one of the most brilliant moments in his career,

0:20:37 > 0:20:40he knew that his career was going to be short.

0:20:42 > 0:20:45He was the pathfinder for a whole generation of European winners

0:20:45 > 0:20:49at Augusta, and he showed them the way once more.

0:20:51 > 0:20:55A spectacular recovery! You don't see flair like that very often.

0:20:55 > 0:21:011983 was a great victory because winning one time is difficult,

0:21:01 > 0:21:04but winning again is more difficult, especially in the Majors.

0:21:04 > 0:21:07And I played the last day with Tom Watson,

0:21:07 > 0:21:10to me one of the best players of all time.

0:21:10 > 0:21:12Head to head, it was fantastic.

0:21:12 > 0:21:15I really opened the door for the rest.

0:21:15 > 0:21:19They didn't feel that it was possible, you know?

0:21:19 > 0:21:21That was kind of, er,

0:21:21 > 0:21:25confidence for them, you know? It was good for golf and good for Europe.

0:21:25 > 0:21:31My original jacket, you're not supposed to take it home with you,

0:21:31 > 0:21:34but I stole mine. Mine is in my house.

0:21:34 > 0:21:38I don't care, but it's there with all my trophies.

0:21:38 > 0:21:40I have an extra one in the locker.

0:21:42 > 0:21:45He's a millionaire, but, my goodness, he respected his upbringing.

0:21:45 > 0:21:47- He never forgot his roots.- No.

0:21:47 > 0:21:49- And he valued so much. - When he was being managed by

0:21:49 > 0:21:54Joe Collett, Seve came and picked him up from the airport once

0:21:54 > 0:21:58and he came in this, apparently, this complete banger.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01And Joe was just going, this is ridiculous,

0:22:01 > 0:22:04I can't be having my client be driving around in a banger.

0:22:04 > 0:22:07So, lo and behold, set him up with a deal.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10So, the next time he goes to visit Seve

0:22:10 > 0:22:15and Seve said, "Yeah, I'll pick you up," he comes along in the banger again!

0:22:15 > 0:22:17He was going, "Where's the Range Rover, Seve?"

0:22:17 > 0:22:20He said, "Joe, too much petrol, too much petrol.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22"I never use."

0:22:24 > 0:22:26Yes, his car.

0:22:26 > 0:22:29He probably sold it. Most probably!

0:22:29 > 0:22:31Typical Seve, anyway.

0:22:33 > 0:22:36Raising money, Seve day at Wentworth.

0:22:36 > 0:22:39Good to be able to come along and support this day today?

0:22:39 > 0:22:43It's great to be here, Gary. There's so much love and support for Seve.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46I am somewhat, but my sister Margie is heavily involved in running

0:22:46 > 0:22:50Seve's foundation, so it's nice to be here to support the family.

0:22:50 > 0:22:54Where does he stand, do you think, in the great pantheon of golf?

0:22:54 > 0:22:58It's hard to put a name or a number on it, but he is one of the all time greatest.

0:22:58 > 0:23:00Especially from a European perspective.

0:23:00 > 0:23:05He's probably the catalyst of what we're seeing now, I mean, Ryder Cup and winning Majors and really taking

0:23:05 > 0:23:10it to the Americans, so I think he's been a huge part of the growth of European golf.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13- Thank, Justin. Better let you get out there.- Cheers.- Play well.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16Everywhere he went there was this trail of people.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19"Have you seen Seve play?" It was like a film star.

0:23:19 > 0:23:21"Have you seen the latest Clint Eastwood movie?"

0:23:21 > 0:23:23"Oh, he's fantastic," or whatever.

0:23:23 > 0:23:28He had that something about him, but he could also be crotchety.

0:23:28 > 0:23:31He had a lot of run ins with authority.

0:23:31 > 0:23:36So, you've made the final decision and your final decision is not allowed the drop, right?

0:23:36 > 0:23:38All right. That's fine.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41- Thank you very much. - I'm sorry, Seve.- No, don't be sorry.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44Of course he clashed with us.

0:23:44 > 0:23:49In the 1981 season and in particular the arrival of, many would say,

0:23:49 > 0:23:52the greatest visiting American Ryder Cup

0:23:52 > 0:23:55team under David Marr, we played without Seve

0:23:55 > 0:23:57because there had been a long dispute.

0:23:57 > 0:24:03His management team felt that because he had become such a star

0:24:03 > 0:24:05that he could basically determine

0:24:05 > 0:24:09what each sponsor would have to pay for his services.

0:24:09 > 0:24:13And that did not sit easily back in those days.

0:24:13 > 0:24:17And for a period of six months of 1981 Seve really lived in exile.

0:24:17 > 0:24:21He went off and played around the world, so, sadly and unfortunately,

0:24:21 > 0:24:24Seve was not selected for that team.

0:24:24 > 0:24:26I felt very bad for John Jacobs.

0:24:26 > 0:24:27I mean, John Jacobs as captain.

0:24:27 > 0:24:31But it was a very, very difficult time for Seve

0:24:31 > 0:24:33and a very difficult time for the European tour.

0:24:33 > 0:24:39We agreed by shaking hands to put that behind us and to go forward.

0:24:39 > 0:24:44And from the moment that Tony Jacklin, most successfully, got Seve

0:24:44 > 0:24:48to commit to playing in Tony's first team, the '83 matches,

0:24:48 > 0:24:52Seve became synonymous with the Ryder Cup.

0:24:52 > 0:24:58The famous one was when we narrowly lost in '83 at Palm Beach in Florida.

0:24:58 > 0:25:00The first time we'd been that close.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03I wasn't there, but actually there was an incident.

0:25:03 > 0:25:07Obviously, Lanny Watkins hit his third

0:25:07 > 0:25:11shot on the 18th. That's the one that Jack Nicklaus kissed the divot.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14And he managed to be beat

0:25:14 > 0:25:20Jose Maria Canizares and we lost at the Ryder Cup by one point.

0:25:20 > 0:25:26As we went to the closing ceremony, everybody was kind of disappointed,

0:25:26 > 0:25:29with the head held down, were looking at the floor.

0:25:29 > 0:25:33I look back and said, "Hey, guys, why are you looking so down?

0:25:33 > 0:25:35"I mean, this is really the first

0:25:35 > 0:25:38"time that we have a chance to beat the Americans.

0:25:38 > 0:25:41"We will get them next time."

0:25:41 > 0:25:45That was sending the message to the rest of the team that we could win.

0:25:45 > 0:25:49It was a turning point in terms of the Ryder Cup, 1983.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52And, sure enough, two years later at the Belfry we won easily.

0:25:54 > 0:25:56Not a million miles away, is it?

0:26:00 > 0:26:02We've waited an awful long time.

0:26:04 > 0:26:06I feel felt like I won another British Open.

0:26:06 > 0:26:10I feel even better because I saw all the people. This is fantastic.

0:26:10 > 0:26:12I mean, tremendous.

0:26:13 > 0:26:17Better than winning the Open? Well, Seve would know.

0:26:17 > 0:26:23Between the Ryder Cups of 1983 and '85 came the Open at St Andrews.

0:26:23 > 0:26:27What applause, and it still isn't even the 18th hole.

0:26:27 > 0:26:301984, Seve at the home of golf.

0:26:30 > 0:26:32They were made for each other.

0:26:32 > 0:26:37I don't know if it was my desire to hole the putt,

0:26:37 > 0:26:42the influence of my willpower, my energy or exactly what happened,

0:26:42 > 0:26:45but at the final second it dropped.

0:26:45 > 0:26:48The ball just dropped into the hole and then I, er...

0:26:50 > 0:26:53..felt, this is it, I won the tournament!

0:26:53 > 0:26:56No matter what Tom is going to do, I knew I was the champion.

0:26:56 > 0:27:01That's why I was so excited and pumping and grabbing the caddie.

0:27:01 > 0:27:07That was the best time and the best moment of my career.

0:27:07 > 0:27:10He just did the amazing matador picture

0:27:10 > 0:27:11when he went through the ball.

0:27:11 > 0:27:15And then he stood there doing this for like...

0:27:15 > 0:27:20I don't know how many seconds it was, but was enough to go right through the whole role of film.

0:27:20 > 0:27:24You can almost see the steam being blown out of his nose.

0:27:24 > 0:27:27Not that he's the bullfighter, he's actually the bull.

0:27:50 > 0:27:52I think being a champion is...

0:27:54 > 0:27:57Well, I start from the background that I have nothing.

0:27:57 > 0:28:02I remember, I have no balls, no clubs, no money, nothing.

0:28:02 > 0:28:09I used to make bets without having any penny in my pocket.

0:28:09 > 0:28:13You have no choice, you have to win somehow.

0:28:13 > 0:28:17Obviously, I became a tremendous competitor.

0:28:17 > 0:28:20If he had a bad round when he was young

0:28:20 > 0:28:23he used to go to bed, whatever time it was.

0:28:23 > 0:28:25No food, just go to bed. That was it.

0:28:25 > 0:28:27His face was as black as coal.

0:28:27 > 0:28:32Because he didn't want to see anybody and nobody wanted to see him!

0:28:32 > 0:28:35I've seen the guy

0:28:35 > 0:28:37biting his grips in tears.

0:28:37 > 0:28:39I saw him at Augusta when he pulled his

0:28:39 > 0:28:41three wood second shot into woods on the left.

0:28:41 > 0:28:44I heard a crack and I turned round and he's holding his jaw.

0:28:44 > 0:28:45He punched himself that hard.

0:28:45 > 0:28:49He wants to win. Wouldn't mind ruffling a few feathers along the way.

0:28:49 > 0:28:52He was like the prize fighter in the ring, he wouldn't stand still.

0:28:52 > 0:28:55He'd be moving around a lot... He wanted to dominate.

0:28:55 > 0:28:59There were times when you walked to the first tee with Seve you knew he

0:28:59 > 0:29:02was going to cut your heart out and just give it to you on the 18th

0:29:02 > 0:29:04green when he's done with you and say,

0:29:04 > 0:29:08"OK, I never really was on the golf course today, but I beat you."

0:29:08 > 0:29:11And that's when you really had to have your blinkers on

0:29:11 > 0:29:14because if you really watched the way he played you go,

0:29:14 > 0:29:16"My gosh, how can this guy be shooting 67, 68, 66

0:29:16 > 0:29:19"when he's hitting one or two fairways a round?"

0:29:19 > 0:29:22We played Nick Price in the final of the World Matchplay

0:29:22 > 0:29:25and it gets to the 13th hole and he says, "Have you got anything to eat?"

0:29:25 > 0:29:28So I go in the bag and said, "There's some fruitcake."

0:29:28 > 0:29:30So, in he goes, pops the fruitcake in.

0:29:30 > 0:29:34Nick Price is at the top of his backswing and it goes down the wrong hole.

0:29:34 > 0:29:36And he splurts out this big cough as Nick Price

0:29:36 > 0:29:40is on the top his backswing and he duffs it in the front left bunker.

0:29:42 > 0:29:44He gets through it nicely. But has he tweaked it?

0:29:44 > 0:29:48I don't know whether he was disturbed. That could be in the sand.

0:29:48 > 0:29:51Seve's like, "Oh, Jesus Christ, Nick, I'm so sorry."

0:29:51 > 0:29:54So he goes to the referee and says, "Let him take the shot again."

0:29:54 > 0:29:58And fair play to Nick, he says, "No, no, Seve, it's fine, it didn't put me off."

0:29:58 > 0:30:03Seve had offered to let him half the hole, you know? He said, "No, it didn't affect me."

0:30:03 > 0:30:05So, Nick comes out to 10 foot

0:30:05 > 0:30:07and I'm at the back of the green and I go, "Seve,"

0:30:07 > 0:30:09I said, "Give him the putt."

0:30:09 > 0:30:11"What?" I said, "Seve, give him the putt.

0:30:11 > 0:30:13"You know it makes sense, you know?"

0:30:13 > 0:30:18He said, "No, no, no, Billy, I offered once, he didn't take it."

0:30:18 > 0:30:20What a competitor!

0:30:20 > 0:30:22No, no, he's had his chance, that's it.

0:30:25 > 0:30:29- Tell me about this book, Bruce. - We were coming back in the bus after playing,

0:30:29 > 0:30:37and Seve said to Lee Trevino, "You know, Bruce is the best celebrity we've had.

0:30:37 > 0:30:42"In the last three or four days, he is striking the ball very well."

0:30:42 > 0:30:44So, Lee says, "I agree, I agree."

0:30:44 > 0:30:49So I said, "If I type out a little letter, will you sign it for me?"

0:30:49 > 0:30:53It says, "We, the undersigned, being of sound mind and body, do hereby

0:30:53 > 0:30:57"solemnly swear and declare that Mr Bruce Forsyth is,

0:30:57 > 0:31:02"in our opinion, the most proficient celebrity at the game of golf

0:31:02 > 0:31:06"we have so far encountered during our stay at this pub."

0:31:06 > 0:31:10And there it is, Lee Trevino and Seve Ballesteros.

0:31:10 > 0:31:13I think he had a tremendous amount of self-confidence.

0:31:13 > 0:31:15He was a shy man.

0:31:15 > 0:31:18He didn't go around shouting the odds, or anything like that.

0:31:18 > 0:31:22He kept himself to himself, but he did have a tremendous

0:31:22 > 0:31:25belief in himself, almost superhuman belief in himself.

0:31:25 > 0:31:28There was something in Seve that,

0:31:28 > 0:31:32until 1986 when he dumped the ball in water at Augusta,

0:31:32 > 0:31:34that he really, genuinely thought,

0:31:34 > 0:31:37"If I decide I want to do this, it is going to happen."

0:31:37 > 0:31:39And often, it did.

0:31:39 > 0:31:44Ah, '86. That is one thing that I have in my heart still, you know.

0:31:46 > 0:31:51To be honest, the death of my father really stopped me

0:31:51 > 0:31:56from playing more, and I was feeling kind of a little bit down,

0:31:56 > 0:32:00and I did promise my father.

0:32:00 > 0:32:02I never thought he was going to die so early.

0:32:02 > 0:32:05I say, "Dad, I want you to come to the Masters,

0:32:05 > 0:32:07"because I feel I am going to win this year."

0:32:07 > 0:32:11And unfortunately, he died 4th March,

0:32:11 > 0:32:15and I guess that was the destiny for me not to win.

0:32:17 > 0:32:20- COMMENTATOR:- He mishit it.- That is the worst shot I've seen him hit.

0:32:20 > 0:32:26- My word.- He put it in the water. Let go of the club, it looks like.

0:32:26 > 0:32:30- Something happened there.- Well, that's absolutely extraordinary.

0:32:30 > 0:32:33I hit it in the water, and then three-putts 17.

0:32:33 > 0:32:36- And that's it.- That's the Masters.

0:32:36 > 0:32:38And that's the Masters, you're right.

0:32:40 > 0:32:42- Como estas?- Bien.- Bien?

0:32:42 > 0:32:45'Might the name Ballesteros be seen again on the leaderboard?

0:32:45 > 0:32:50'Seve has two sons and a daughter, and golf is in the genes.

0:32:50 > 0:32:53'On the other hand, he was not an easy act to follow.'

0:32:55 > 0:32:57No me gusta mucho.

0:32:58 > 0:33:00- Hablas ingles, no?- Si.- Si?

0:33:00 > 0:33:04Let's talk English, because nobody understands otherwise at home.

0:33:04 > 0:33:06So how old are you now, Miguel?

0:33:06 > 0:33:11- 18.- So quite young, so perhaps you didn't see the very best of his game.

0:33:11 > 0:33:18But the nice thing is, you can see so many films of your father, and I expect you feel good, yeah?

0:33:21 > 0:33:25- APPLAUSE COMMENTATOR:- There you are.

0:33:25 > 0:33:27You young fellows, you don't see these sort of shots.

0:33:27 > 0:33:31Seve was the most unpredictable player you could ever play against.

0:33:31 > 0:33:35Most of us had maybe 20 or 30 different ways of shooting 65.

0:33:35 > 0:33:39Seve has 1,500 ways of shooting 65.

0:33:39 > 0:33:43Whenever Seve played golf, anything can happen.

0:33:43 > 0:33:46I thought he was one of the most creative golfers that I have ever seen.

0:33:46 > 0:33:49He hit the ball some places nobody could ever get out of,

0:33:49 > 0:33:51and he always managed to get out of them.

0:33:51 > 0:33:54He did it all time, so it was no big deal to him.

0:33:54 > 0:33:57Week in, week out, he would hit it deep in the bushes or trees,

0:33:57 > 0:34:00- and he would always find a way.- Yes!

0:34:00 > 0:34:03The only people that ever went deeper and more murky on a golf course than Seve

0:34:03 > 0:34:05were the photographers,

0:34:05 > 0:34:09because we would often have to be crouching inside the bush.

0:34:09 > 0:34:14The excitement was if anyone was going to put it in a bush,

0:34:14 > 0:34:16but try to play it out, this was your man.

0:34:20 > 0:34:23It was so entertaining, but you just knew in your mind

0:34:23 > 0:34:27when you were playing him that, don't ever think for one minute

0:34:27 > 0:34:30because he's hit in the woods, that you have got an advantage.

0:34:30 > 0:34:33Genius doesn't have rules. Genius makes its own rules.

0:34:33 > 0:34:35He was a genius.

0:34:39 > 0:34:41APPLAUSE

0:34:41 > 0:34:45He hit the best shot I've ever seen in my life in Switzerland.

0:34:45 > 0:34:46We were on the last tee, and typical Seve,

0:34:46 > 0:34:49he hit it 80 yards, right behind a six-foot wall.

0:34:49 > 0:34:53- COMMENTATOR:- Now he got underneath that, started it right.

0:34:53 > 0:34:56- The there are some trees down there. - Is that out of bounds?

0:34:56 > 0:34:59- Has that gone out of bounds? - 'And he's down there,'

0:34:59 > 0:35:02and he's down on his hands and knees. He's snorting.

0:35:02 > 0:35:04And Billy Foster is caddying for him,

0:35:04 > 0:35:07and Billy is going, "Come on, boss, chip it out, chip it out."

0:35:07 > 0:35:11He was in there in the middle of the trees, and I pleaded with him four times.

0:35:11 > 0:35:14"You are Seve Ballesteros, not bloody Paul Daniels.

0:35:14 > 0:35:15"Just chip it out, please."

0:35:15 > 0:35:18Everybody else would have chipped it out sideways,

0:35:18 > 0:35:20pitched it on the green, two putts.

0:35:20 > 0:35:26He said, "No, Billy, I see the shot." I said, "Just chip it out."

0:35:26 > 0:35:31"No, no, No." And then he gave me the wave, "Billy, go away."

0:35:31 > 0:35:34I remember Billy walking past, and there are a few bleeps in this.

0:35:34 > 0:35:37He said, "No bleep-bleep-bleep chance."

0:35:37 > 0:35:40The guy is clearly deranged. He's lost it.

0:35:40 > 0:35:42No, he hadn't. He knew exactly what he was doing.

0:35:42 > 0:35:46He got down, half a backswing with a wedge, he got it up over the wall,

0:35:46 > 0:35:49through a tiny gap in the trees the size of a dinner plate,

0:35:49 > 0:35:51over the swimming pool,

0:35:51 > 0:35:54over some 60-foot pine trees that were in front of that.

0:35:54 > 0:35:56And he landed five yards short of the green.

0:36:00 > 0:36:03- COMMENTATOR:- Yes! Ho-ho! - CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:36:03 > 0:36:06Well, we haven't seen Seve like that since, well,

0:36:06 > 0:36:081984 at St Andrews, I think.

0:36:08 > 0:36:12- Did he enjoy that? - 'And then he chipped in for birdie.'

0:36:12 > 0:36:14I had to get down on my hands and knees and bow to him,

0:36:14 > 0:36:16because, let's face it, he was a god, wasn't he?

0:36:16 > 0:36:22There was one more major to be won, in 1988, back at Lytham.

0:36:22 > 0:36:24The greatest I saw him play was at Lytham,

0:36:24 > 0:36:29when Pricey and I and Seve went off,

0:36:29 > 0:36:31any one of us with a chance to win the Open.

0:36:31 > 0:36:32When you go onto the first tee,

0:36:32 > 0:36:35you size up the guys you're playing with, look at them.

0:36:35 > 0:36:38Some guys are fidgety, and some guys,

0:36:38 > 0:36:41their eyes are darting all over the place.

0:36:41 > 0:36:45And Seve was just so focused that day.

0:36:45 > 0:36:48We had this battle, which I just loved every moment of,

0:36:48 > 0:36:50and he did, too.

0:36:50 > 0:36:53- COMMENTATOR:- What a fantastic stroke.

0:36:53 > 0:36:56That was the day, it was the true Seve.

0:36:56 > 0:37:00I've never seen a man peg it up, take a swing,

0:37:00 > 0:37:04follow through and keep going, all in one motion.

0:37:04 > 0:37:06It was quite something.

0:37:06 > 0:37:08- COMMENTATOR:- Oh, look at that. Oh, yes.

0:37:08 > 0:37:15This hole, certainly one that Seve will remember all his life.

0:37:15 > 0:37:17He pieced together that round, and I said,

0:37:17 > 0:37:19"That was the best round of golf I've ever seen."

0:37:24 > 0:37:27CHEERING

0:37:28 > 0:37:30- COMMENTATOR:- How do you like that, Senor?

0:37:30 > 0:37:34- As soon as I hit it, I knew it was perfect. - Seve is once more the champion.

0:37:36 > 0:37:38Lucky.

0:37:38 > 0:37:42On his own he won five majors, the one and only Seve.

0:37:44 > 0:37:49But when it came to the Ryder Cup, he became one half of two,

0:37:49 > 0:37:51a Spanish double-act in a team event.

0:37:53 > 0:37:58Along came Jose Maria and Seve, and formed this partnership.

0:37:58 > 0:38:02And they were remarkable in the way they went about their business.

0:38:02 > 0:38:03To have those two going out

0:38:03 > 0:38:07and leading in that era was just absolutely fantastic.

0:38:07 > 0:38:10When I captained in '91, I certainly put them together.

0:38:10 > 0:38:14They wanted to play together, and they wanted to play for Spain.

0:38:14 > 0:38:16They were proud Spaniards.

0:38:16 > 0:38:19My life wouldn't have been worth living if I had put Seve

0:38:19 > 0:38:21and Olazabal with anyone else.

0:38:21 > 0:38:23They both appreciated the other's skill,

0:38:23 > 0:38:25and they had trust in each other.

0:38:25 > 0:38:30If your job is to hit the fairway, but you missed the fairway.

0:38:30 > 0:38:32Doesn't matter, I'll get you out of it.

0:38:32 > 0:38:36They had this rapport that made it work.

0:38:36 > 0:38:38My relationship with him

0:38:38 > 0:38:42has been a very special one through all these years.

0:38:42 > 0:38:44When I was 15 years old, he asked me

0:38:44 > 0:38:49if I would play in a charity match against him at his home golf course.

0:38:49 > 0:38:51And that is when everything started.

0:38:51 > 0:38:54And I have learned so many things from him.

0:38:54 > 0:38:59He has been my mentor in a way, and I owe him a lot.

0:39:02 > 0:39:07Jose and I, first we know each other very well,

0:39:07 > 0:39:09and we come from the same background.

0:39:09 > 0:39:14I have a huge confidence with Seve, playing with Seve, because of that.

0:39:14 > 0:39:19He tells me, "Don't you worry about anything. You just play golf. "I will take care of the rest."

0:39:19 > 0:39:25That is what he told me on the first time, and I was shaking like a leaf.

0:39:25 > 0:39:29I remember when I say, "How far you think I can read this putt?"

0:39:29 > 0:39:31And you say, "Just a little bit to the right,"

0:39:31 > 0:39:36and you say, "Be careful, be very careful, very fast."

0:39:38 > 0:39:41- COMMENTATOR:- Just a minute. Just a minute!

0:39:43 > 0:39:46And I would say, "That is really fast, isn't it?"

0:39:46 > 0:39:50- COMMENTATOR:- And they hang on to win the match.- And you holed the putt.

0:39:50 > 0:39:55Thank God, otherwise... You would have hung yourself.

0:39:55 > 0:39:59- COMMENTATOR:- There it was.

0:39:59 > 0:40:02Ballesteros has had an incredible week here.

0:40:03 > 0:40:06When we played at Kiawah, we, uh...

0:40:06 > 0:40:12we have that incident with Chip Beck and Paul Azinger.

0:40:12 > 0:40:15And they were three up,

0:40:15 > 0:40:17and we called the referee.

0:40:17 > 0:40:22And the referee say one thing, Chip Beck say another thing.

0:40:22 > 0:40:26Azinger say another thing. And suddenly you say,

0:40:26 > 0:40:30"OK, let's go and play. We're going to beat these guys."

0:40:30 > 0:40:34We shot 31 on the back nine, that was fantastic.

0:40:34 > 0:40:39- COMMENTATOR:- That's a fine shot. It could go in. What a shot!

0:40:39 > 0:40:47That was the best nine holes we played together. It was fantastic.

0:40:47 > 0:40:52- COMMENTATOR:- Knock it in. That's the match. What a turnaround.

0:40:52 > 0:40:53What a tremendous game!

0:40:54 > 0:40:58I have in my trophy room where we shake hands.

0:40:58 > 0:41:02A very famous picture, it's in my trophy room.

0:41:05 > 0:41:07There must have been a massive respect for Seve.

0:41:07 > 0:41:11Oh, there was. There was. Huge. Huge.

0:41:11 > 0:41:13I tell you what, it's the reason these guys

0:41:13 > 0:41:15are living the way they do. It's because of him.

0:41:15 > 0:41:17He had that much influence, do you think?

0:41:17 > 0:41:19Oh, God, yes. And the rest.

0:41:21 > 0:41:24I'm giving away my buggy tonight in the auction.

0:41:24 > 0:41:27- Does that mean you've got to walk now?- I have got to walk now!

0:41:27 > 0:41:31It didn't do quite as many miles as Seve's buggy did back in '97.

0:41:31 > 0:41:34- His was everywhere.- It was. He was driving every which way.

0:41:34 > 0:41:36But he did a great job as a captain.

0:41:38 > 0:41:44De Espana, from Spain, Jose Maria Olazabal!

0:41:44 > 0:41:47CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:41:47 > 0:41:50He did a fabulous job, and on top of that, his players played well.

0:41:50 > 0:41:53And they played well when they needed to.

0:41:53 > 0:41:57He was always there. At the crucial moments, he was there.

0:41:57 > 0:41:59CHEERING

0:42:02 > 0:42:06It's just a shame that Seve's game had gone off by 1997,

0:42:06 > 0:42:08because I think he wanted to be a playing captain.

0:42:08 > 0:42:14And I think the European Tour wanted to take it to Spain for Seve.

0:42:14 > 0:42:17Nevertheless, he threw himself into this captaincy.

0:42:17 > 0:42:19He almost got too involved.

0:42:19 > 0:42:23People forget he was only 41 when he captained that team.

0:42:23 > 0:42:25And he wanted to play. That was the issue.

0:42:25 > 0:42:28He wanted to play every shot for everybody. And I would rather him do mine,

0:42:28 > 0:42:31he was much better than I was. "Go and play!"

0:42:31 > 0:42:33- Inspiring nevertheless. - Totally, yes.

0:42:33 > 0:42:35You wanted to perform for him.

0:42:35 > 0:42:36- COMMENTATOR:- It's all square.

0:42:38 > 0:42:39It's not now!

0:42:39 > 0:42:45And I think a little misjudgement from the Yankee Doodles.

0:42:45 > 0:42:48Seve was off the charts when he was captain. It was so funny.

0:42:48 > 0:42:51Jimenez was his vice-captain, and Carmen, who was his wife,

0:42:51 > 0:42:55they would come down to breakfast, and they would be like this.

0:42:55 > 0:42:57And I said, "What happened?"

0:42:57 > 0:42:59He said, "He came to my room at four in the morning."

0:42:59 > 0:43:01He says, "We have a team.

0:43:01 > 0:43:04"We have four to put out," he says.

0:43:04 > 0:43:07He has decided who is first playing, and he knows who is last playing.

0:43:07 > 0:43:10He says, "We discussed for hours, two and three.

0:43:10 > 0:43:13"Which way two and three is going to be played." You know?

0:43:13 > 0:43:16He drove everybody up the wall.

0:43:16 > 0:43:20Seve hadn't made up his mind until the last moment

0:43:20 > 0:43:22who would play with whom in the matches,

0:43:22 > 0:43:25and some players I could see were getting a bit...

0:43:25 > 0:43:27You know, tense.

0:43:27 > 0:43:30The beginning of the week was great.

0:43:30 > 0:43:34"I don't want to put any pressure on you, I want you to relax.

0:43:34 > 0:43:36"No pressure at all."

0:43:36 > 0:43:39You then get to Saturday night. "We have to win!"

0:43:39 > 0:43:42He says, "Now we have to try. We have to try really hard.

0:43:42 > 0:43:45"I don't want you in the bunker. I don't want you to three-putt.

0:43:45 > 0:43:47- "And don't hit the trees!" - LAUGHS

0:43:47 > 0:43:49His leadership throughout was extraordinary.

0:43:49 > 0:43:54And one of the clever things Seve did in that tournament was, in the practice rounds,

0:43:54 > 0:43:58he made them play for their own money.

0:43:58 > 0:44:01And I think that gave them somewhat of an edge.

0:44:01 > 0:44:04CHEERING

0:44:04 > 0:44:07He engaged with the public and he got the team to engage

0:44:07 > 0:44:10with the crowds which brought the team on side.

0:44:10 > 0:44:14It was the atmosphere. It was electric, the whole way round.

0:44:14 > 0:44:16He was quite something, as a captain.

0:44:16 > 0:44:18Different style to yourself, was he?

0:44:18 > 0:44:21Unique. How's that? We'll call him unique.

0:44:21 > 0:44:25But passionate to the end. A passionate captaincy.

0:44:25 > 0:44:27There's one captain, I believe, over the last 20 years,

0:44:27 > 0:44:30that we've actually won the Ryder Cup for, as a captain.

0:44:30 > 0:44:31And it was him.

0:44:33 > 0:44:39'Seve has always been the backbone of the team,'

0:44:39 > 0:44:42whenever I've been part of the Ryder Cup

0:44:42 > 0:44:44and he was part of the Ryder Cup,

0:44:44 > 0:44:48and that is something that I will always miss.

0:44:49 > 0:44:52- COMMENTATOR:- By Jove, he didn't hold back on that!

0:44:52 > 0:44:55Now, that's worth the price of your television licence,

0:44:55 > 0:44:57to see that shot alone.

0:44:58 > 0:45:02But playing golf like this took its toll,

0:45:02 > 0:45:04especially on that old back of his.

0:45:06 > 0:45:12You know, everything has a start and everything has to finish

0:45:12 > 0:45:15and I guess that was my destiny.

0:45:17 > 0:45:22In 2007, he retired and went home to Pedrena.

0:45:23 > 0:45:25Oh, that's a good shot there.

0:45:25 > 0:45:27It's on the green.

0:45:27 > 0:45:28HE LAUGHS

0:45:28 > 0:45:30It's on. You see it?

0:45:32 > 0:45:35See, the less I practise, the better I become.

0:45:35 > 0:45:37I just find out that.

0:45:37 > 0:45:40Life was not as simple as it seemed.

0:45:40 > 0:45:44The son of a farmer had been divorced from Carmen,

0:45:44 > 0:45:46the daughter of a major banker, for three years.

0:45:46 > 0:45:50The family man, but also on his own.

0:45:50 > 0:45:55What was it like growing up with an uncle as famous as Seve?

0:45:55 > 0:45:59Well, he has given all of us lots of opportunities.

0:45:59 > 0:46:03He always tried to protect his family very much.

0:46:03 > 0:46:07As a golf professional, he was what everyone knows.

0:46:07 > 0:46:10But as a person, those who had the opportunity to meet him,

0:46:10 > 0:46:14he was very close and a very good friend of his friends.

0:46:14 > 0:46:16He did not have many good friends.

0:46:16 > 0:46:20He knew lots of people, but he had very few, but very good ones.

0:46:20 > 0:46:25And he was someone who always tried to look after everyone.

0:46:25 > 0:46:29'He would always ask me how my wife was,

0:46:29 > 0:46:31'how my children were getting on.'

0:46:31 > 0:46:34He came on the phone one day, pretty incensed,

0:46:34 > 0:46:37because he felt that our rules officials had been on top of him,

0:46:37 > 0:46:39he got a warning for slow play.

0:46:39 > 0:46:41And I said, "can I just put you on hold for a second?

0:46:41 > 0:46:44"My son is in the last 500 metres of this rowing championship."

0:46:44 > 0:46:46He said, "Describe it to me."

0:46:46 > 0:46:47So I described the race

0:46:47 > 0:46:49and said they'd just won by the narrowest margin.

0:46:49 > 0:46:52"What was it you wanted to talk to me about?"

0:46:52 > 0:46:55He said, "It doesn't matter now. That's great, you've won."

0:46:55 > 0:46:58I said, "I'll come and see you tomorrow morning before you tee off."

0:46:58 > 0:47:01I never did find out what he was complaining about.

0:47:01 > 0:47:05'He would say that the European Tour is a family and sometimes,

0:47:05 > 0:47:08'like all families, we can have a little war.'

0:47:08 > 0:47:11In the players' meetings, to me, he'd say,

0:47:11 > 0:47:14"Ken, you have bad days, just like the caddies,

0:47:14 > 0:47:17"And sometimes, the caddies have to go home."

0:47:17 > 0:47:19'95% of the time, I love the bloke.'

0:47:19 > 0:47:225% of the time, I wanted to punch his lights out,

0:47:22 > 0:47:24head-butt him. He drove you mad at times.

0:47:24 > 0:47:29Just so demanding. After he won the Open, the next time I saw him

0:47:29 > 0:47:30was three weeks later,

0:47:30 > 0:47:33and he gave me a list of things I'd done wrong.

0:47:33 > 0:47:37So I said, "It's a good job you won, otherwise we'd have been shot."

0:47:37 > 0:47:41He said, "we're all in this together, we're a family."

0:47:41 > 0:47:45He said, "I'm happy for you to join with me in my celebration,

0:47:45 > 0:47:48"as I want to join with you when you have something to celebrate.

0:47:48 > 0:47:52"If we have sadness, we share the sadness together, we are a family."

0:47:52 > 0:47:54All right?

0:47:54 > 0:47:56Very good indeed.

0:47:57 > 0:47:59I won.

0:47:59 > 0:48:01And so the final chapter begins.

0:48:01 > 0:48:04This is Seve's last interview.

0:48:04 > 0:48:08The man who could bend a small ball in flight was about to lose control.

0:48:10 > 0:48:14With hindsight, it can be said that he'd not been himself for some time.

0:48:14 > 0:48:19But who was looking back when the future was now so uncertain?

0:48:19 > 0:48:20'Life is...'

0:48:22 > 0:48:23..it's incredible.

0:48:23 > 0:48:27You never know what is going to happen tomorrow, you know?

0:48:28 > 0:48:32'I was going through a nice summer and feeling great.

0:48:32 > 0:48:37'I built nine holes here for myself. I was feeling very happy with myself'

0:48:37 > 0:48:40and I went to Madrid to have lunch

0:48:40 > 0:48:45with my son, Miguel, and my nephew, Ivan,

0:48:45 > 0:48:48and all of a sudden, I didn't feel very well.

0:48:48 > 0:48:51And... And I got dizzy

0:48:51 > 0:48:55and so Ivan took me

0:48:55 > 0:48:58to the emergency centre of La Paz.

0:49:01 > 0:49:05They took some pictures of the head

0:49:05 > 0:49:07and they found...

0:49:07 > 0:49:11they found something there and they didn't like it.

0:49:14 > 0:49:17They decided to do a CT scan and they confirmed

0:49:17 > 0:49:24the idea of something in there was probably a tumour.

0:49:24 > 0:49:30That means that their second aspect was to do an MRI,

0:49:30 > 0:49:34and then they confirmed the diagnosis.

0:49:34 > 0:49:36It was a brain tumour.

0:49:36 > 0:49:39'When I really felt that I was in a dangerous situation

0:49:39 > 0:49:43'was when I saw all my brothers and my nephews and everybody,

0:49:43 > 0:49:47'and when you see so many people from the family, you must say,

0:49:47 > 0:49:48'"Something is not right,"

0:49:48 > 0:49:52'because otherwise they would not be here.'

0:49:52 > 0:49:56I think Seve has a big personality.

0:49:56 > 0:49:59I think one person that is similar to him,

0:49:59 > 0:50:01and is in the top of the world,

0:50:01 > 0:50:03'and fighting in this area of his life.'

0:50:05 > 0:50:07'I have to spend'

0:50:07 > 0:50:1072 days there.

0:50:10 > 0:50:12That was very, very, very long, believe me.

0:50:14 > 0:50:16'Patience has never been my strongest point.

0:50:18 > 0:50:22'You know, to spend 22 days in intensive care

0:50:22 > 0:50:26'and 72 days in one room,

0:50:26 > 0:50:28'you need tremendous patience

0:50:28 > 0:50:32'and there were times when it was tough.

0:50:32 > 0:50:36'You can see I have a couple of little holes here.'

0:50:37 > 0:50:41And my ear is... I have a big ear now.

0:50:41 > 0:50:44Now I can hear the balls better when they hit the trees.

0:50:45 > 0:50:50But...this is life.

0:50:50 > 0:50:53One day you feel fantastic and the next day,

0:50:53 > 0:50:56'you never know what is going to happen.

0:50:56 > 0:50:58'What happened to me is...'

0:51:00 > 0:51:03..this, I will call destiny.

0:51:03 > 0:51:06One test that God is putting on me...

0:51:09 > 0:51:10..and I'm winning.

0:51:10 > 0:51:13Just going to hold 18 putt at St Andrews.

0:51:19 > 0:51:21'Seve was someone...'

0:51:21 > 0:51:24you could learn something from him every day.

0:51:24 > 0:51:27Especially during those two-and-a-half years

0:51:27 > 0:51:30where he faced a brain tumour.

0:51:30 > 0:51:33And the way he... Obviously, he had his ups and downs,

0:51:33 > 0:51:36but he faced that illness with a sense of humour.

0:51:36 > 0:51:40'He had the strength to create the foundation that carries his name

0:51:40 > 0:51:44'and things that leave all of us with a great memory of him.'

0:51:44 > 0:51:49In many ways, he faced that challenge of cancer

0:51:49 > 0:51:51like he played his golf,

0:51:51 > 0:51:54with similar passion and that incredible spirit.

0:51:54 > 0:51:57Before he was ill, he wanted himself to be remembered

0:51:57 > 0:52:00as an artist, he used to say.

0:52:00 > 0:52:02But after suffering a brain tumour,

0:52:02 > 0:52:05I think he wants to be remembered as someone

0:52:05 > 0:52:10'who fought a disease with lots of courage

0:52:10 > 0:52:12'and also his foundation,'

0:52:12 > 0:52:15he wanted to help others

0:52:15 > 0:52:21and help the scientific community so others can benefit in the future.

0:52:22 > 0:52:24What would live on?

0:52:24 > 0:52:26Memories of his golf, of course,

0:52:26 > 0:52:28- and this.- 'He said this was probably

0:52:28 > 0:52:31'the most important legacy he wanted to leave.'

0:52:31 > 0:52:36Obviously, he has left a legacy that is there for all of us

0:52:36 > 0:52:40with his golf, but he was very clear that once he became ill,

0:52:40 > 0:52:42this was as important a legacy to him

0:52:42 > 0:52:44as the one he left with golf.

0:52:46 > 0:52:47Have a good day.

0:52:47 > 0:52:49Thanks very much.

0:52:49 > 0:52:55I met him in Madrid a few years ago before all of this

0:52:55 > 0:52:57and I had... I was very lucky,

0:52:57 > 0:53:01I had the chance to play golf with him.

0:53:01 > 0:53:06'How he managed all these problems'

0:53:06 > 0:53:09with cancer, with everything,

0:53:09 > 0:53:11he fought it a lot,

0:53:11 > 0:53:18and very much what he does, he shows to the rest of the people.

0:53:18 > 0:53:24He was something really fantastic, and he is a fantastic example.

0:53:24 > 0:53:28Nadal, he is a good friend of mine, yeah. I played golf with Nadal.

0:53:28 > 0:53:30He's a good golfer. Yeah, Nadal.

0:53:30 > 0:53:32Very strong, look at the muscles.

0:53:32 > 0:53:35'He's been in the gym day and night.

0:53:35 > 0:53:38'He's very strong, very, very powerful.'

0:53:38 > 0:53:39A tremendous player.

0:53:39 > 0:53:42He wrote you a note, but I can't read it, it's in Spanish.

0:53:42 > 0:53:46'Is good to see you. Good luck.

0:53:46 > 0:53:50'I will write to you some time in the future.'

0:53:50 > 0:53:53A big hug, always, you know?

0:53:53 > 0:53:57Nice guy, nice guy. Nice going at Wimbledon for him, fantastic.

0:54:07 > 0:54:12And I have fish also, I like fish. I have fish in the lake.

0:54:12 > 0:54:14Shall we go and have a look?

0:54:14 > 0:54:15It's fantastic, yes.

0:54:15 > 0:54:18'Seve was in great form which was nice to see.

0:54:18 > 0:54:20'It was a lovely sunny day

0:54:20 > 0:54:22'and his boys were with him. So we did the interview'

0:54:22 > 0:54:28which was terribly sad at times

0:54:28 > 0:54:32because I wanted to talk about this and suddenly he'd be crying,

0:54:32 > 0:54:35'and you'd think, "Poor old, Seve. I'm going to stop."

0:54:35 > 0:54:36'He wipes the tears away'

0:54:36 > 0:54:37and then you start to cry

0:54:37 > 0:54:41and you think, "This is becoming a bit of a handful here."

0:54:41 > 0:54:46Despite all that, I came away, as you always did with Seve,

0:54:46 > 0:54:51with this feeling of this warmth of spirit

0:54:51 > 0:54:54and how he was going to fight this thing to the very bitter end.

0:54:54 > 0:55:00Last year, there was a gathering of Open champions at St Andrews.

0:55:00 > 0:55:02Seve could not be there.

0:55:02 > 0:55:04But he did send a message.

0:55:04 > 0:55:08I hope you enjoy the week at St Andrews

0:55:08 > 0:55:11and good luck to everyone. I love you all.

0:55:12 > 0:55:15APPLAUSE

0:55:15 > 0:55:18'It was brilliant, pretty impactful.'

0:55:18 > 0:55:24We all were taken aback by what Seve had to say

0:55:24 > 0:55:27and how much it meant to him

0:55:27 > 0:55:30to be a part of that collection of champions.

0:55:32 > 0:55:36'That struck us all, we started talking about it, how unique it is'

0:55:36 > 0:55:40to be a part of that kind of history.

0:55:40 > 0:55:44We missed him. We really did. We missed his presence.

0:55:44 > 0:55:47Forget the player, forget him hitting golf shots

0:55:47 > 0:55:50and doing all the fantastic things that he did.

0:55:50 > 0:55:52We missed him as a person.

0:55:52 > 0:55:54APPLAUSE

0:55:54 > 0:55:57It would be remiss of me at this time not to mention

0:55:57 > 0:56:00the poster that was in our team room all week,

0:56:00 > 0:56:03and all our good friends in the world of golf,

0:56:03 > 0:56:07and we wish Seve Ballesteros a quick and complete return to health.

0:56:07 > 0:56:09CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:56:09 > 0:56:11Seve never left Pedrena again.

0:56:11 > 0:56:14But the master had one more message to deliver

0:56:14 > 0:56:17to a new generation of Ryder Cup hopefuls.

0:56:17 > 0:56:21'It definitely inspired me, because before that phone call,'

0:56:21 > 0:56:24everyone knows what I said about the Ryder Cup being an exhibition

0:56:24 > 0:56:28'and after that phone call from Seve, I remember thinking to myself,

0:56:28 > 0:56:31"This is sort of a big deal, this thing."

0:56:31 > 0:56:36'And he wouldn't get off the phone. It was just incredible.'

0:56:36 > 0:56:37Monty was like, "Thanks, Seve."

0:56:37 > 0:56:40And he goes, "No, no, let me finish, let me finish."

0:56:40 > 0:56:43'And I think it also inspired everyone else.

0:56:43 > 0:56:46'I felt we had an incredible captain, a great team,

0:56:46 > 0:56:48'but that message from Seve'

0:56:48 > 0:56:52was definitely in everyone's thoughts throughout the week.

0:56:52 > 0:56:56He created this great passion and people loved him.

0:56:56 > 0:57:00'A great difference between admiration and love

0:57:00 > 0:57:03'and the golfing world loves Seve.'

0:57:03 > 0:57:07'He loved the British public and the British public loved him.

0:57:07 > 0:57:08'Even if there were other'

0:57:08 > 0:57:13British golfers playing, everybody wanted Seve to win.

0:57:13 > 0:57:15I was like it myself. I didn't care about anybody else.

0:57:15 > 0:57:17Seve, you wanted him to win.

0:57:18 > 0:57:22Seve was born in a land where golf was little known.

0:57:22 > 0:57:24By the end of the 20th century,

0:57:24 > 0:57:28he was voted Spain's sportsman of that century.

0:57:28 > 0:57:33From teenage prodigy to five-time major champion,

0:57:33 > 0:57:37from maverick to Ryder Cup hero and captain.

0:57:37 > 0:57:41He was a force of Spanish nature,

0:57:41 > 0:57:43forward-looking and yet haunted,

0:57:43 > 0:57:46exuberant but brooding,

0:57:46 > 0:57:51enchanting, outspoken, driven and humble.

0:57:51 > 0:57:55I don't want to see people feel sorry for me.

0:57:55 > 0:57:57I have been the luckiest person in the world.

0:57:57 > 0:58:02I have so much luck and so much fun for so many years

0:58:02 > 0:58:07that this thing that just happened to me is a very little thing,

0:58:07 > 0:58:13and compared to other people that have tougher times

0:58:13 > 0:58:19and they don't have the opportunity to live life so intensive,

0:58:19 > 0:58:21as good as I did it.

0:58:21 > 0:58:25So thank you very much and I love you all from my heart, thank you.

0:58:29 > 0:58:30DOG BARKS

0:58:30 > 0:58:33Sssh! Silence, please.

0:58:33 > 0:58:36DOG BARKS

0:58:36 > 0:58:38THEY LAUGH

0:58:38 > 0:58:43# People should smile more... #

0:58:44 > 0:58:48It may not be easy to say adios without a tear,

0:58:48 > 0:58:50but we shall try, Seve,

0:58:50 > 0:58:53as we remember wonderful you and your wonderful life.

0:58:55 > 0:58:57# ..I'm not saying there's nothing

0:59:00 > 0:59:05# Everything laid out for you

0:59:05 > 0:59:07# Just close your eyes

0:59:07 > 0:59:09# Take a deep breath

0:59:09 > 0:59:11# And start another war

0:59:11 > 0:59:12# Keep buying, keep moving

0:59:12 > 0:59:14# It's gonna come

0:59:14 > 0:59:16# One thing is certain

0:59:16 > 0:59:19# I can't change the world

0:59:19 > 0:59:23# It's just an observation

0:59:23 > 0:59:26# I can't ignore... #
