0:00:05 > 0:00:10That's it! Venus able to beat her little sister, Serena!

0:00:16 > 0:00:19A special day in the special life of a special champion.

0:00:19 > 0:00:23Serena Williams for a fourth time Wimbledon champion.

0:00:23 > 0:00:27Sisters Venus and Serena Williams won the women's doubles title today,

0:00:27 > 0:00:30the first sisters to win Olympic gold in tennis.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33Two black girls from Compton weren't supposed to even play tennis,

0:00:33 > 0:00:36let alone be really good at it.

0:00:36 > 0:00:41Two US players, sisters, same bedroom, prime time,

0:00:41 > 0:00:45Saturday night, US Open. No-one could have scripted that ever.

0:00:45 > 0:00:49Venus and Serena Williams have made tennis history.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52They are the first sisters and the first African-Americans ever

0:00:52 > 0:00:55to claim the top two spots in the rankings.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58Venus is ranked number one and Serena is right behind her at number two.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20What do you want to be when you grow up?

0:01:20 > 0:01:21A tennis player.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23I would like to be a tennis player.

0:01:23 > 0:01:27What's your ambition for Venus and Serena in tennis?

0:01:27 > 0:01:30For both of them to become number one in the world.

0:01:30 > 0:01:34The girl whose dad calls her and her sister the kids from the ghetto.

0:01:34 > 0:01:36The girls from the ghetto.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39The ghetto makes you real strong, real tough, real brave.

0:01:39 > 0:01:44It makes you to the point where you believe you can do anything and you will.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46Sisters just 15 months apart.

0:01:46 > 0:01:52What would be the odds that they would not only choose the same profession, but dominate it?

0:01:52 > 0:01:55The story goes that you're not even that big a fan of tennis,

0:01:55 > 0:02:00that you looked at this sport as a great way for your family to raise itself up and make some cash.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02- Is that true?- That is so true.

0:02:02 > 0:02:06Venus Williams! A champion again!

0:02:06 > 0:02:09My parents told me I'd be number one in the world.

0:02:09 > 0:02:11I was brainwashed!

0:02:11 > 0:02:14You've got to win. Nah, you're going to win. Aren't you?

0:02:14 > 0:02:19- Are you going to win for us? - Uh-huh.- Good girl. That's all that's necessary.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22- How do you feel the way you're hitting the ball right now? - Good, Daddy.

0:02:22 > 0:02:27- How about your feet? Are your feet moving well?- No, Daddy. - How about yours?- Yes, Daddy.

0:02:27 > 0:02:32Don't get excited. This is your game.

0:02:32 > 0:02:36Richard was going around and begging private country clubs,

0:02:36 > 0:02:39like Riviera Country Club and others, to give him used balls.

0:02:39 > 0:02:43And he would then fill up a shopping cart in an old Volkswagen bus.

0:02:43 > 0:02:49We didn't talk on the phone, we didn't go to school parties, and all that stuff.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51But somehow, I don't feel like I missed out.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53There were probably a few things I wanted to go to,

0:02:53 > 0:02:55but I figured I wasn't going to go,

0:02:55 > 0:02:58so I didn't ask, and anyway, most of the time I was at practice.

0:02:58 > 0:03:02She was...I guess the guinea pig, in a sense.

0:03:02 > 0:03:07Venus, absolutely, there was so much pressure on her to become a great player.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10I mean, Richard was talking about it every single day

0:03:10 > 0:03:12to every newspaper in the country.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17She definitely... She had it the toughest.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21If you down with your feet flat like a 97-year-old person, you'll never be a tennis player.

0:03:21 > 0:03:26Richard was very, very protective and he generally would never let anyone around the girls

0:03:26 > 0:03:29because he was extremely protective, because he had seen so much.

0:03:31 > 0:03:35Richard Williams was from Shreveport, Louisiana

0:03:35 > 0:03:38and came from a very small town, and was raised, you know,

0:03:38 > 0:03:42by a single mother, who instilled in him some really great values.

0:03:42 > 0:03:46But the things that Richard saw transformed his thinking

0:03:46 > 0:03:49and his outlook, really, on everything and justifiably so.

0:03:49 > 0:03:53He had seen men beaten, he had seen, you know, people denied opportunity.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56He grew up in an era where, you know,

0:03:56 > 0:03:59the coloured-only sign was standard.

0:03:59 > 0:04:01A lot of things went wrong here.

0:04:01 > 0:04:08Right here, six or seven guys held me down and actually took a nail

0:04:08 > 0:04:14that goes on a cross tie and nailed that sucker right into my leg.

0:04:14 > 0:04:18The reason they would do something like this is simply because I wouldn't call them Mister.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23And I don't think it was fair for me to call no-one Mister

0:04:23 > 0:04:25that always called me "boy" and "nigger"

0:04:25 > 0:04:27and always trying to kill me.

0:04:30 > 0:04:33What do you feel inside when you're on the court?

0:04:33 > 0:04:36- I feel good.- I feel good.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39What didn't I do to try to copy Venus when I was younger?

0:04:39 > 0:04:41Her favourite colour was my favourite colour,

0:04:41 > 0:04:44her favourite animal was my favourite animal,

0:04:44 > 0:04:46she wanted to win Wimbledon, I wanted to win Wimbledon.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49She is tennis prodigy Venus Williams

0:04:49 > 0:04:51and she's also our sportswoman of the week.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54It was very difficult, being in the shadow of Venus

0:04:54 > 0:04:59because ever since I could remember, Venus was always in the newspapers, and always, you know, in the press.

0:05:06 > 0:05:10I was never supposed to be the one who was going to be a really

0:05:10 > 0:05:15great player, but I was determined to not become a statistic.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18So that's the only reason I played tennis.

0:05:18 > 0:05:20I was a copycat, basically.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23Serena, she didn't have that power when she first started,

0:05:23 > 0:05:26so she had to try to beat you different ways.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29She would hit angles, she was trying drop shots, and then once

0:05:29 > 0:05:33she got her power level up, her serve became as dominant as Venus'.

0:05:39 > 0:05:41According to a report in People magazine, Serena Williams

0:05:41 > 0:05:44is hospitalised in Los Angeles after having emergency

0:05:44 > 0:05:47treatment for a blood clot in her lungs.

0:06:04 > 0:06:08And I was like, it's been swollen for a few days but now it's just getting worse.

0:06:08 > 0:06:12And so she said, "You have a blood clot". And I was like, "I don't have a blood clot."

0:06:12 > 0:06:16A doctor that I had said, "Take her to the emergency room immediately."

0:06:16 > 0:06:21- See you later. - I don't feel anything. - We love you. Love you, baby.

0:06:21 > 0:06:23I'm going to call Mom and let her know you're good.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26When I got the call that she was in the hospital,

0:06:26 > 0:06:28I was just really in shock.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32And I don't know if she realised how serious it was.

0:06:32 > 0:06:37I'm so grateful that she went, because she could have died.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39Just by not knowing.

0:06:42 > 0:06:44Does that hurt?

0:06:44 > 0:06:48Yeah, it's been really hurting lately, like it never hurt like this.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56Beautiful day here in Melbourne. Sun is out at last.

0:06:56 > 0:06:5918 degrees at the Australian Open.

0:07:00 > 0:07:05Serena's had a lot of public health issues but during that same time,

0:07:05 > 0:07:07I've also been going through a lot of my own issues.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09I'm still in the down and out mode.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15For me, tennis has always been a part of my life.

0:07:15 > 0:07:19It's just who I am. I've been playing since I was four years old.

0:07:19 > 0:07:23So not only do I love the game, I love the challenge, I love the pressure.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25It's wrapped up into who I am.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27We love you, Venus!

0:07:29 > 0:07:31Venus, 30 years of age.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33And you've got to say a veteran of the tour.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36Many wondering if there is another major in her.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41I just screamed from the pain. You know, it was just involuntary.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44I was able to win that match

0:07:44 > 0:07:47but I was pretty much finished after that.

0:07:51 > 0:07:57But I wanted to go out and know, for sure, 100%, that I couldn't play.

0:08:00 > 0:08:02She's in trouble.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04The pain was an impossible pain.

0:08:04 > 0:08:08So, it was something that you don't play through.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11That's it. That's it, I'm afraid.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16The crowd feels a little bit cheated, I guess, sadly.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18I know she's in there, pissed,

0:08:18 > 0:08:21and she's probably saying, now what kind of reaction was that?

0:08:21 > 0:08:25I'm going to fight. I have been fighting for a long time, so I know I can fight longer.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30She hasn't played since Wimbledon of last year.

0:08:30 > 0:08:34I know Serena hopes to be back. Her target at least is the French Open.

0:08:34 > 0:08:36What if the layoff extends beyond that?

0:08:36 > 0:08:39How difficult - she's 29 years old now - for Serena to come back?

0:08:39 > 0:08:41Part of my lung is dead.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43I'm never going to get it back.

0:08:43 > 0:08:47- Where's your shot?- I just had things keep happening to me.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50After that I had to thin my blood, after I got out of the hospital.

0:08:50 > 0:08:54The worst part is pricking. Once you get over the prick you're good.

0:08:54 > 0:08:59Every day I had to take a shot, and one day, as my luck would have it, I hit a blood vessel,

0:08:59 > 0:09:03and it gave me like this massive lump on my stomach.

0:09:03 > 0:09:07It wouldn't go away and it got bigger and bigger and it got really painful.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09- Did you take your antibiotic? - No, I didn't.

0:09:09 > 0:09:14They had to surgically remove it and then put a tube in me to keep draining it.

0:09:14 > 0:09:18Then I had that drain in me for ten days, and day ten I'd had enough.

0:09:20 > 0:09:26Hey! How are you? You OK?

0:09:26 > 0:09:28Yeah. I'm all right.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36I was stuck in my house for over two weeks.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38I couldn't leave, I couldn't do anything.

0:09:38 > 0:09:40I just basically was house ridden.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43And then I just got into this karaoke thing and I just started

0:09:43 > 0:09:46singing and singing and singing and next thing I know, I couldn't stop.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49# Don't ever let me go. #

0:09:49 > 0:09:53I really do think it became like a rehab for me.

0:09:53 > 0:09:57# Amazing Grace

0:09:57 > 0:10:02# How sweet the sound. #

0:10:10 > 0:10:12My hip's OK. It's been a real slow process.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15I'll get you more comfortable.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18I feel like I'm just trying to get better.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21I feel like I haven't done anything in my career.

0:10:21 > 0:10:26Maybe that sounds ridiculous, but I feel like I have to do so much more.

0:10:26 > 0:10:28I'm tired. It's hard today.

0:10:28 > 0:10:33There's not a sport that tears your body up worse than tennis.

0:10:33 > 0:10:35You have to run in tennis the whole time.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38There's no time-outs. One match can go on for ever.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40A tennis player doesn't have a long career.

0:10:42 > 0:10:44My wrist can hurt a lot when I do that.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46I know I complain a lot about injuries,

0:10:46 > 0:10:48but my shoulder hurts a little.

0:10:48 > 0:10:52That's why I can't... can't wait to get stronger.

0:10:52 > 0:10:54You're doing good.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57I just got to get ready. I've got to be fit.

0:10:57 > 0:11:00I have so many pieces that go in the puzzle

0:11:00 > 0:11:03and more than anything, I have to play without fear.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06Right now, I'm fearful when I move or when I do this.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09It's like, is this going to break or is this not going to work?

0:11:09 > 0:11:11It's a horrible place to be mentally

0:11:11 > 0:11:13but I have to just somehow overcome all of that.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18We have to get serious, if you want to come back for Wimbledon.

0:11:18 > 0:11:22- So I should just live in the gym? - The first three or four days,

0:11:22 > 0:11:24just work on your rhythm, work on your strokes,

0:11:24 > 0:11:26work on your technique.

0:11:26 > 0:11:30Get a little confidence with your foot, with your toe, with the movement.

0:11:30 > 0:11:35I just want to play, you know. Like, I'm going crazy that I can't play.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39I'm never going to retire unless I have to.

0:11:43 > 0:11:45Also, like, I can't think like that.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49I just... So I don't know, like...

0:11:51 > 0:11:53You just worry too much.

0:11:53 > 0:11:55- I know. My mind... - You worry too much.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59There are like little people in there going crazy.

0:11:59 > 0:12:03You have too many people telling you too many different things.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06But I feel like if I could just fix my mental...

0:12:06 > 0:12:08Ah!

0:12:08 > 0:12:10I'll be fine.

0:12:13 > 0:12:15One more.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20I think I'd like to start the family meeting out with the positives.

0:12:20 > 0:12:24First of all, I want to talk about the great things I've been doing!

0:12:25 > 0:12:30When they're in Florida, they live together. They practise together.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32They're doing the same thing. They have the same goals.

0:12:32 > 0:12:36Serena, thank you for paying half the rent

0:12:36 > 0:12:39and keeping this establishment the fine place that it is.

0:12:39 > 0:12:41An adorable thing happened at Fed Cup.

0:12:41 > 0:12:44They came in and there was a big chair,

0:12:44 > 0:12:46and that's the only place they could really sit.

0:12:46 > 0:12:49I thought we'd have to get another chair or something.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51They said, "No, we can sit here."

0:12:51 > 0:12:54They were trying to scoot in this chair together,

0:12:54 > 0:12:56and their hips are touching.

0:12:56 > 0:13:00And I am cracking up, because it was telling me

0:13:00 > 0:13:02how close they truly are connected.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10If you're going to be over here, you've got to treat her, Serena.

0:13:10 > 0:13:12Relax.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17- I'm so hungry. You have fish here? - Yes.

0:13:17 > 0:13:21- Is it in the freezer?- Refrigerator. - Oh, it's in the refrigerator?

0:13:21 > 0:13:23Oh, my gosh! I'm going to cook some fish.

0:13:23 > 0:13:25It's so ridiculous.

0:13:25 > 0:13:29Serena will call Venus her husband, or her wife, or whatever.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32She'll come home and be like, "I've got to cook, cos you know..."

0:13:34 > 0:13:37- There's not a lot of it. - Oh, it's a filet.

0:13:38 > 0:13:43I think it's going to be difficult, if and when that time comes,

0:13:43 > 0:13:47if they get married and have to have families of their own.

0:13:47 > 0:13:49Venus is like, I'm never moving.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52And Serena was like, if you're not moving, I'm not moving.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55I know they're not twins, but in a way they are.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57And their whole life experience has been within

0:13:57 > 0:13:59the shadow of the other person.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02There's very little that's happened to one of them

0:14:02 > 0:14:05that the other hasn't been privy to, maybe even an eyewitness to.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08So if you tried to marry into that arrangement,

0:14:08 > 0:14:11it would be a very unique arrangement to say the least.

0:14:11 > 0:14:13It would have to be two... Two brothers.

0:14:38 > 0:14:41Will Venus be ready in time for this month's French Open?

0:14:41 > 0:14:46Williams is recovering, but the winner of 21 Grand Slam titles

0:14:46 > 0:14:49and three Olympic medals is far from retiring.

0:14:49 > 0:14:53Mentally I'm ready to play the matches. I just haven't played in so long.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58I had a good call with my doctor,

0:14:58 > 0:15:01and he was surprised at how much I was training.

0:15:01 > 0:15:04He was like, "Five days a week!"

0:15:04 > 0:15:08I said, I'm running, I'm doing this, I can hold my own legs up now.

0:15:09 > 0:15:11I'm a professional athlete again!

0:15:15 > 0:15:21Right now, mentally I'm there 200%, and I think that's all that matters.

0:15:21 > 0:15:27I don't know physically percentage, but I know mentally, I'm there.

0:15:29 > 0:15:32Hi, Vickie. It's Esther with Serena Williams.

0:15:32 > 0:15:37- Is Dr Drasin available?- Hello.- Hi, Dr Drasin.- It's Serena and Esther.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40How are you guys doing? Fantastic, fantastic news.

0:15:40 > 0:15:44Your chest CT scan shows absolutely nothing.

0:15:44 > 0:15:47I am hereby officially certifying you off Coumadin.

0:15:47 > 0:15:49- Wow!- Oh, thank God.

0:15:49 > 0:15:53Congrats. Which means that you still have to behave yourself over there!

0:15:55 > 0:15:57I'm on my best behaviour.

0:15:57 > 0:15:59Was that you laughing over there?

0:15:59 > 0:16:02- Yeah, of joy.- OK.

0:16:02 > 0:16:04It's just been such a hard fight, you know?

0:16:04 > 0:16:09Well, you are now completely OK to restart all training.

0:16:09 > 0:16:13As much training as you possibly can. You're good to go. Sound good?

0:16:13 > 0:16:15Yeah, sounds good.

0:16:15 > 0:16:18- Good luck with everything and keep me in the loop, OK?- OK.

0:16:18 > 0:16:21- Thank you.- Bye-bye.- Bye.

0:16:23 > 0:16:25No more Coumadin.

0:16:29 > 0:16:31A little inappropriate!

0:16:36 > 0:16:39I always say that match changed my life and my career.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41And I'll never forget, she was serving

0:16:41 > 0:16:44and I remember thinking, "I've got to go for it".

0:16:44 > 0:16:46I said, Serena, if you don't go for it now,

0:16:46 > 0:16:48you'll regret it for the rest of your life.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50Even if you miss, you've just got to go for it.

0:16:50 > 0:16:52And she served the ball,

0:16:52 > 0:16:55and I remember, I hit a forehand as hard as I could down the line.

0:17:00 > 0:17:03And that set the foundation for the rest of my career.

0:17:03 > 0:17:05Just go for it.

0:17:05 > 0:17:07You know? Like, sometimes, you just got to go for it.

0:17:16 > 0:17:18She's done it!

0:17:18 > 0:17:20Game, set, championship, Williams!

0:17:22 > 0:17:26It was so unexpected, and you know, I hadn't won anything at that point.

0:17:26 > 0:17:31Well, first of all I'd like to thank my God, Jehovah, because if it wasn't

0:17:31 > 0:17:34for Him I wouldn't be here today and I'm very excited about everything.

0:17:36 > 0:17:39I'd like to also thank my dad and my mom because they've been great

0:17:39 > 0:17:42parents and all my sisters and the support.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48How was it for you not being the first to win a Grand Slam?

0:17:48 > 0:17:52I think at the time, not to win the first major

0:17:52 > 0:17:55was tough for me, because I felt like I should, as the older sister,

0:17:55 > 0:17:59have been able to step up, and do more, and be tougher.

0:17:59 > 0:18:03I didn't know how to win. I didn't know how to close a match out. I didn't know how to fight.

0:18:03 > 0:18:05I don't think that came naturally to me.

0:18:05 > 0:18:08Serena, it came more natural to her.

0:18:08 > 0:18:10It's a defining moment of like,

0:18:10 > 0:18:13how are you going to react to something like that?

0:18:13 > 0:18:17Am I going to learn from her example, or am I going to crumble? So, I wanted to learn.

0:18:20 > 0:18:23Do you ever watch Wimbledon or the French Open

0:18:23 > 0:18:26and say to yourself, I might play there some day?

0:18:27 > 0:18:30Yeah. Yes, I do.

0:18:30 > 0:18:32What do you think about?

0:18:35 > 0:18:39I think about, I have a wild card in the first round.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42I have a bye in the second round.

0:18:44 > 0:18:48I get to play someone that you never heard of in the third round

0:18:48 > 0:18:51and the fourth round, and I get to the finals and I win.

0:18:54 > 0:18:58And she finally gets a championship!

0:19:04 > 0:19:09The one trophy she says she's dreamt of since she first started playing tennis is hers.

0:19:12 > 0:19:15Making her way to family and friends to share the moment.

0:19:19 > 0:19:22So a hug from Serena. What a lovely moment this is.

0:19:23 > 0:19:27Well, it really was a most athletic performance.

0:19:27 > 0:19:29A marvellous, marvellous moment.

0:19:31 > 0:19:34And the first African-American champion here

0:19:34 > 0:19:39since the great Althea Gibson who won twice in '57 and '58.

0:19:41 > 0:19:44She went on to win four more before I won another one.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47Venus said Serena showed her how to win.

0:19:49 > 0:19:52Well, everybody's been talking about the return of the Williams sisters.

0:19:52 > 0:19:54Serena was gone for practically a year,

0:19:54 > 0:19:57she had to battle with a variety of injuries.

0:19:57 > 0:20:00Venus Williams in only her third tournament of the year.

0:20:00 > 0:20:06If you're asking me to make a call on who will win the women's title, I'm going to go with Venus.

0:20:06 > 0:20:10I've got to take a shot before I jump on the plane.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13I haven't done this in so long. I'm a little nervous.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16I've been out for a long time. The last time I went on the road,

0:20:16 > 0:20:20I got on the plane and my foot broke, literally at that moment.

0:20:20 > 0:20:24So today I'm thinking, God, I hope nothing happens.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28- I'm wasting too much time. - Yeah, you need to just pack a bag.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31You want your blankie?

0:20:31 > 0:20:36Don't forget to call me. If you need anything just call me. I'm always here.

0:20:42 > 0:20:45Well, we're just days away from the most prestigious

0:20:45 > 0:20:49event in world tennis, and yes, it is that Wimbledon time of year again.

0:20:49 > 0:20:522011 marks Wimbledon's 125th birthday.

0:20:59 > 0:21:01We're staying in the same place, right?

0:21:01 > 0:21:03Yeah, we're staying in the same place.

0:21:03 > 0:21:06- I hope so.- I love you.

0:21:06 > 0:21:08I love you too.

0:21:14 > 0:21:17Every tournament that either one or both of these players are at,

0:21:17 > 0:21:21there's a buzz from the crowd to the press and even the other players.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24They've missed these two great champions over the past 12 months.

0:21:28 > 0:21:30Excuse me.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33Security. Is he with you guys?

0:21:33 > 0:21:36- I'm the club photographer. - I don't care who you are. You're on that hill.- OK.

0:21:36 > 0:21:39Excuse me. I can't get him to move on that hill.

0:21:39 > 0:21:44- Is he not with you?- He's not with us.- I'm the club photographer. - I don't care who you are.

0:21:44 > 0:21:48- We are allowed to be here.- Would you just come with me?- Yeah, sure.

0:21:49 > 0:21:53I would hit that topspin serve like what you're doing.

0:21:54 > 0:21:58One, that's a one. One. One.

0:21:58 > 0:22:03That's just annoying. That "one" is annoying

0:22:03 > 0:22:07to them and to me and I have no idea what it is. I don't even think they do.

0:22:07 > 0:22:09And what about when you say "one" and "two"?

0:22:09 > 0:22:14Well, we don't want to put that on tape right now, but they know what it means.

0:22:14 > 0:22:16That guy's pretty sharp.

0:22:16 > 0:22:20Ah, I hate when my dad says that, so much.

0:22:20 > 0:22:21That means, I don't know.

0:22:21 > 0:22:23It means that I didn't look at the ball.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26I let him say it, cos it's like his thing.

0:22:26 > 0:22:28But it's like, ah, so frustrating.

0:22:28 > 0:22:33With my dad, I'm kind of having an argument in my head with him. Sometimes I find it distracting.

0:22:38 > 0:22:40More on the outside.

0:22:40 > 0:22:42You got your shot. Make it.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46Elbow up a little higher, Venus.

0:22:46 > 0:22:48Step forward. Catch it early.

0:22:53 > 0:22:57Keep the elbows up and every ball is going to go over the net.

0:22:57 > 0:22:58Every ball going to go over.

0:22:58 > 0:23:02I hate that too, because it doesn't make sense.

0:23:02 > 0:23:06It's not elbows up, you know? You have to swing through.

0:23:07 > 0:23:09What's the toughest match you've ever been in?

0:23:19 > 0:23:22Probably the one against my sister.

0:23:24 > 0:23:26What was it like?

0:23:30 > 0:23:35Horrible. She won 7-6. It was good that she won.

0:23:36 > 0:23:40It was the first-ever prime-time women's final.

0:23:40 > 0:23:43September 8th 2001.

0:23:43 > 0:23:47It was Venus versus Serena. Sister versus sister.

0:23:48 > 0:23:53The world of tennis was ready for a fresh breath of air.

0:23:53 > 0:23:57Men had dominated up until the time that Venus and Serena came on board.

0:23:57 > 0:24:00Enter the stadium side by side now.

0:24:00 > 0:24:02They actually changed the programming line-up,

0:24:02 > 0:24:06because the ratings were so high that they moved it from normal

0:24:06 > 0:24:09daytime Saturday to Saturday night.

0:24:09 > 0:24:11And you had the world watching. So it was unbelievable.

0:24:11 > 0:24:14This is a great night for tennis in general,

0:24:14 > 0:24:18and I think the only thing more unbelievable than the women's playing in prime time

0:24:18 > 0:24:20is the Williams story itself.

0:24:20 > 0:24:24It was a very tense and hard thing to watch.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27It's stressful to watch them play because you want them both to win.

0:24:27 > 0:24:29You feel there's a little guilt.

0:24:29 > 0:24:34Like, I can't clap for Serena. I can't clap for Venus.

0:24:37 > 0:24:42No-one should ever underestimate quite apart from their race

0:24:42 > 0:24:45and the way that they were driven when they were children

0:24:45 > 0:24:49and all that, is just the sheer psychological thrill it was

0:24:49 > 0:24:53for people to see two sisters when they played against each other.

0:24:56 > 0:24:59I don't think that anyone can ever really understand

0:24:59 > 0:25:04the level of competition and what it feels like to play your sibling...

0:25:12 > 0:25:16The champion of the 2001 US Open. Venus Williams.

0:25:16 > 0:25:19..who you share a house with, you train with, you travel with,

0:25:19 > 0:25:23who you share a trainer with, obviously you have same parents, you have the same friends.

0:25:26 > 0:25:29I get mad at Venus when she wins against me.

0:25:29 > 0:25:31It's so stupid, though. I hate losing.

0:25:31 > 0:25:35I hate losing more than I like winning.

0:25:35 > 0:25:41Venus, you and your sister have brought so much excitement and talent to this game of tennis.

0:25:41 > 0:25:44They changed the face of tennis.

0:25:44 > 0:25:47They made it more interesting to a wider swath of Americans.

0:25:47 > 0:25:51I always want Serena to win, so it is kind of strange

0:25:51 > 0:25:54because I'm the big sister. I take care of Serena,

0:25:54 > 0:25:57I make sure she has everything, even if I don't have anything.

0:25:57 > 0:26:01One of the high points of the careers of both women

0:26:01 > 0:26:05was when they got to the final in the French Open in 2002.

0:26:05 > 0:26:08As it turned out, it was the first victory for Serena

0:26:08 > 0:26:10in a Grand Slam over Venus.

0:26:10 > 0:26:17What a great point to end it and baby sis has finally won!

0:26:17 > 0:26:21- Where is Venus going? - She seems to be getting a camera.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24- She wants something here. - It is a camera.

0:26:24 > 0:26:28To take a picture of her sister to record the moment.

0:26:28 > 0:26:33It's possible that at Wimbledon this year she could overtake Venus as number one in the world.

0:26:33 > 0:26:37I do think subconsciously that Venus is willing to give her the spotlight.

0:26:37 > 0:26:39I always think Venus is going,

0:26:39 > 0:26:42"Serena, I know you really need this. It's OK, go for it!"

0:26:46 > 0:26:50And Serena Williams has defended her Wimbledon championship.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53Venus is an extreme protector.

0:26:53 > 0:26:56Serena always had to win, always had to be the princess.

0:26:56 > 0:27:00Youngest child syndrome. She has that really, really bad.

0:27:00 > 0:27:04Serena's got the added advantage of being the younger sister.

0:27:04 > 0:27:06Little less pressure.

0:27:06 > 0:27:09I think it's been harder for Venus to have to deal with that.

0:27:09 > 0:27:13I would say, out of the eight finals, that Serena's won six of them.

0:27:13 > 0:27:15I had a brother that played professional tennis.

0:27:15 > 0:27:21And something tells me that I wouldn't be as forgiving or understanding or clapping!

0:27:21 > 0:27:24I see Venus clapping. I guess it's the ultimate blood is thicker than water.

0:27:24 > 0:27:27I feel like I should take lessons from them

0:27:27 > 0:27:30rather than me explaining how the hell they do that.

0:27:30 > 0:27:32At the end of the day, it says Williams.

0:27:32 > 0:27:36And if you lose, maybe one day someone will mistaken you for the other Williams.

0:27:36 > 0:27:39Whatever. Fill in the blank. V or S.

0:27:45 > 0:27:49Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. May I have your attention, please?

0:27:49 > 0:27:52We will shortly be opening the gates.

0:27:52 > 0:27:54- Grunting?- Yeah.

0:28:00 > 0:28:06At least one of your daughters is one of the foremost proponents of grunting.

0:28:06 > 0:28:08Do you think that's really helping her game or not?

0:28:08 > 0:28:12Well, let's see. To grunt or not to grunt? That is the question.

0:28:12 > 0:28:17And it seems to be all over on the British press and the British mind.

0:28:18 > 0:28:21I believe in let grunt and let not grunt.

0:28:21 > 0:28:25Is it something that you talk about a lot with them or not?

0:28:27 > 0:28:31Well, grunting has not been the focus of our conversations.

0:28:31 > 0:28:35We more or less talk about technique and how to move your feet and things like that.

0:28:36 > 0:28:42Goddamn! Bother me about a stupid grunt. I can't believe it.

0:28:45 > 0:28:47No-one knows about Serena.

0:28:47 > 0:28:50We know from old, it doesn't take long before Serena

0:28:50 > 0:28:55comes from someone who's out of the picture into the headline story,

0:28:55 > 0:28:57and that could easily happen here.

0:28:57 > 0:29:00Serena has never lost in the first round

0:29:00 > 0:29:03of a Grand Slam in 44 appearances.

0:29:16 > 0:29:19Oh! Aravane! Why did you follow her?

0:29:19 > 0:29:21A fantastic rally!

0:29:26 > 0:29:30- Forty-love.- Three match points then for the champion.

0:29:34 > 0:29:36Game, set, match, Miss Williams.

0:29:36 > 0:29:40It was a terrific third set. It was a wonderful scrap!

0:29:40 > 0:29:44And Aravane Rezai should take so much credit for what she achieved out there.

0:29:45 > 0:29:49But in the end, Williams, in the third set, bruised her badly.

0:29:54 > 0:29:56And who would bet against her now

0:29:56 > 0:29:59from making it three titles in a row?

0:30:11 > 0:30:15It's just been so hard. I never dreamt I would be here right now.

0:30:15 > 0:30:19It's been a disaster year, but, you know, I've been praying

0:30:19 > 0:30:21and had my family and I love tennis.

0:30:21 > 0:30:25And to be able to come back at Wimbledon is pretty awesome.

0:30:25 > 0:30:29I've learned that you can never take any moment for granted.

0:30:29 > 0:30:34I've been really trying to draw spiritually on my God, Jehovah,

0:30:34 > 0:30:38who I've really been trying to get a closer relationship to.

0:30:48 > 0:30:51Remember this from Haines City? You don't remember this?

0:30:53 > 0:30:54No?

0:30:56 > 0:30:57Come on.

0:30:57 > 0:31:04# I should have known from the start I fall short with the things I do

0:31:04 > 0:31:07# Wholehearted

0:31:07 > 0:31:10# Wholehearted

0:31:10 > 0:31:14# Wholehearted. #

0:31:20 > 0:31:24I think that the Williams sisters are artistic people.

0:31:25 > 0:31:28Any artist has to be obsessive...

0:31:30 > 0:31:35..has to have the capacity to concentrate so exactly on what

0:31:35 > 0:31:40it is they wish to achieve in terms of artistry, that you lose a lot.

0:31:40 > 0:31:46I'm not sure that I think I'm a perfectionist. I always say, more or less, I am obsessive.

0:31:46 > 0:31:49But it's something I've worked on on the court too because I would be

0:31:49 > 0:31:53out there formerly for two hours and I could be in a tournament and

0:31:53 > 0:31:56I'd practise one thing, and before I know it, my court time was done.

0:31:56 > 0:32:00Someone else was coming to get the court and I didn't practise anything else.

0:32:00 > 0:32:03I hate that every time, I have to bounce the ball five times

0:32:03 > 0:32:06before I serve and the second serve, I just only can bounce it twice.

0:32:06 > 0:32:08You've got to be obsessive to be a tennis player.

0:32:08 > 0:32:10Who wants to hit 17 million balls over the net

0:32:10 > 0:32:12and then do it again the next day?

0:32:12 > 0:32:14Michael Jordan knows,

0:32:14 > 0:32:17"I got to shoot 300 jumpers every day or else I'm going to suck."

0:32:17 > 0:32:20And they got to hit X amount of balls or "I'm going to suck".

0:32:20 > 0:32:24And I've seen people that suck, and I've seen their lives,

0:32:24 > 0:32:26and I don't want to have one of their lives.

0:32:26 > 0:32:29I like being good, and they like being good,

0:32:29 > 0:32:33so they're, you know, going to keep this OCD thing up.

0:32:33 > 0:32:36I think perfectionist people are nuts!

0:32:36 > 0:32:38I think obsessive people are A-OK.

0:32:41 > 0:32:44You know you see a lot of players that will break down

0:32:44 > 0:32:46if they miss three or four shots.

0:32:46 > 0:32:49You don't see that with the Williams sisters.

0:32:49 > 0:32:51They just stay the course of their matches.

0:32:51 > 0:32:54Their mom was always talking to them about being strong women,

0:32:54 > 0:32:57"You're going to have tough times out there, don't let it affect you,"

0:32:57 > 0:33:00and their father was always telling them it's us against the world.

0:33:02 > 0:33:05Hello, a very warm welcome to finals day

0:33:05 > 0:33:09in the women's tournament here at Indian Wells.

0:33:09 > 0:33:12I can't imagine another experience in sports

0:33:12 > 0:33:15being as profound as the Indian Wells experience.

0:33:15 > 0:33:18It was my favourite tournament to go to. I lived to go to Indian Wells.

0:33:18 > 0:33:21In the semifinals, Venus decided she couldn't play

0:33:21 > 0:33:23because she was injured.

0:33:23 > 0:33:27And so she yielded a walkover to her sister, Serena.

0:33:27 > 0:33:31Some people think, obviously she's given up the match so her sister can advance.

0:33:31 > 0:33:35A fair number of them, you have to believe, were in the stands the previous night when Venus defaulted.

0:33:35 > 0:33:41They felt they got gypped out of one match, and they're just going to express their disappointment.

0:33:41 > 0:33:44CROWD BOOS

0:33:47 > 0:33:49I've never at a tennis match

0:33:49 > 0:33:56heard 20,000 people in unison boo one player.

0:33:59 > 0:34:02Serena's looking up in the stands trying to find it,

0:34:02 > 0:34:04like, what's going on? What am I missing?

0:34:04 > 0:34:08And then it dawns on her that it was her.

0:34:08 > 0:34:11Richard Williams walked out and here's the crowd again.

0:34:11 > 0:34:16It's a long walk down to the courtside box.

0:34:16 > 0:34:20Richard actually stopped and looked at somebody.

0:34:20 > 0:34:22It's a very tense situation.

0:34:26 > 0:34:28Here was Richard after the heckling and more boos.

0:34:32 > 0:34:35An American crowd booing an American family,

0:34:35 > 0:34:39and you have to say it does smack of a little bit of racism.

0:34:39 > 0:34:42You go to your home state, where you're from,

0:34:42 > 0:34:48couple hours south of Compton and you're being booed.

0:34:48 > 0:34:52And the person they're cheering is this Belgian woman.

0:34:52 > 0:34:55She played the first few games and she was crying.

0:34:55 > 0:34:59Someone called me nigger and it was intense.

0:34:59 > 0:35:01I prayed on the sidelines, and I pulled myself together.

0:35:01 > 0:35:05I didn't pray to win. I just prayed to get through this, and get off this court,

0:35:05 > 0:35:07and just be over this already.

0:35:07 > 0:35:12Serena got booed from the warm-up to the last point, to the trophy ceremony.

0:35:12 > 0:35:16Well, she won the match because she's a champion and she has the heart of a tiger.

0:35:16 > 0:35:19Have you seen Rocky? Well, that's her.

0:35:25 > 0:35:28CROWD BOOS

0:35:28 > 0:35:31When you talk about Serena's speech,

0:35:31 > 0:35:35at the end she says, "You guys were pretty tough on me today."

0:35:35 > 0:35:37And she goes...

0:35:37 > 0:35:40I would like to thank everyone that supported me,

0:35:40 > 0:35:43and if you didn't, I love you guys anyway. Thank you.

0:35:43 > 0:35:46She walked off the court, and she was, like,

0:35:46 > 0:35:47"I'm not going back next year."

0:35:47 > 0:35:50The tournament will go on with or without me.

0:35:50 > 0:35:51But I'm not going back.

0:35:51 > 0:35:54I mean, honestly, like, you look at people like Martin Luther King

0:35:54 > 0:35:56and Malcolm X and Rosa Parks.

0:35:56 > 0:35:59If they didn't believe and stand up for what they believed in,

0:35:59 > 0:36:02then we wouldn't have the freedoms that we experience today.

0:36:02 > 0:36:03What I had to go through is so small

0:36:03 > 0:36:05compared to what they had to go through.

0:36:05 > 0:36:08And if I can't stand up for something like this, then who am I?

0:36:08 > 0:36:11Like, what have they taught me in history?

0:36:11 > 0:36:14The reason they are so special is because they are

0:36:14 > 0:36:20African-American sisters who have been supreme in this former...

0:36:20 > 0:36:25in this sport that formerly was an elitist, white person's folly.

0:36:25 > 0:36:27I mean, obviously the fact that they're black.

0:36:27 > 0:36:30I mean, yeah, Althea Gibson opened things up in the '50s.

0:36:30 > 0:36:35COMMENTATOR: Althea Gibson helped to topple the lily-white tradition in tennis

0:36:35 > 0:36:39by winning the national and Wimbledon championships in 1957 and 1958.

0:36:39 > 0:36:41And Arthur Ashe wasn't... I mean, he paved the way, in a way.

0:36:41 > 0:36:44But he certainly wasn't able

0:36:44 > 0:36:48to get maybe quite the same chances as they have.

0:36:48 > 0:36:52Some people may think the black athlete is now on absolute par

0:36:52 > 0:36:54with a white athlete. I don't think that is true,

0:36:54 > 0:36:58and I think the Williams sisters have had to live with that fact

0:36:58 > 0:37:02that the war is not over, when they've performed with extraordinary

0:37:02 > 0:37:06valour and courage and skill under difficult circumstances.

0:37:11 > 0:37:15Venus is going down her way, if that's to be the case.

0:37:33 > 0:37:36That's it. Pironkova does it again!

0:37:37 > 0:37:41- Venus was quite a way below par. - She really was.

0:37:43 > 0:37:44How do I deal with losses?

0:37:44 > 0:37:47Yes, how do you...how do you deal with losses like the one today?

0:37:47 > 0:37:49I used to get really upset.

0:37:49 > 0:37:52Like, I wouldn't change my clothes for a couple of days.

0:37:52 > 0:37:57I didn't wear any deodorant or anything, it was pretty nasty.

0:37:57 > 0:37:59Or I'd sit on the couch for about a week.

0:37:59 > 0:38:01It was pretty tough.

0:38:01 > 0:38:04But after a while I realised I hated feeling that way,

0:38:04 > 0:38:08so I make sure I move on immediately within the hour.

0:38:08 > 0:38:12I try to fix my mistakes, but I just hate feeling that upset.

0:38:12 > 0:38:16It's just miserable so I refuse to do it.

0:38:16 > 0:38:19When you go out to play today, you know that they're going to bring

0:38:19 > 0:38:22their best game out there for you, so you don't...

0:38:22 > 0:38:23Don't you let up.

0:38:23 > 0:38:25You bring your best game out there too.

0:38:25 > 0:38:28- UMPIRE:- 7-6...

0:38:28 > 0:38:31I was defending champion at Wimbledon. So I felt pressure.

0:38:31 > 0:38:33I was, like, if I don't win I'm going to be ranked,

0:38:33 > 0:38:36like, 200 in the world, and I didn't want that for myself.

0:38:36 > 0:38:39I was, like, "I got to win, I got to win!"

0:38:39 > 0:38:42And I put so much stress on myself, you know, I couldn't hit shots

0:38:42 > 0:38:44and I couldn't do anything.

0:38:46 > 0:38:54- COMMENTATOR:- Serena Williams, a great champion and a great effort

0:38:54 > 0:38:56to try to hang on to the trophy, Lindsay.

0:38:56 > 0:39:01She did. She was far from her best in this tournament.

0:39:01 > 0:39:06And you have to say, it's been a bad day for the Williams family.

0:39:06 > 0:39:08- REPORTER:- A lot of people would probably say

0:39:08 > 0:39:11if you'd come here after the best part of a year out of the game

0:39:11 > 0:39:12and walked away with the title,

0:39:12 > 0:39:15it wouldn't necessarily have been the best thing for women's tennis.

0:39:15 > 0:39:16Can you sort of appreciate that,

0:39:16 > 0:39:19and does this result show that it's very competitive still?

0:39:19 > 0:39:21Yeah, I'm super happy that I lost.

0:39:21 > 0:39:22LAUGHTER IN BACKGROUND

0:39:22 > 0:39:24Go women's tennis!

0:39:28 > 0:39:30# You need a bodyguard

0:39:30 > 0:39:33# My money boy said I woulda been a good prez

0:39:33 > 0:39:36# But I'ma be a better mogul music exec

0:39:36 > 0:39:38# When I bail out money, the first thing I did

0:39:38 > 0:39:41# Was got all hands on deck, a deal for a couple mill

0:39:41 > 0:39:43# My life, world tours

0:39:43 > 0:39:46# Encores, applause

0:39:46 > 0:39:49# Cars and jets... #

0:39:49 > 0:39:53What would be the perfect date for Serena or Venus Williams?

0:39:53 > 0:39:56If you're a powerful woman, you know,

0:39:56 > 0:40:00you're going to have most likely not a powerful man.

0:40:00 > 0:40:04Who would be the Williams' knight in shining armour? Nobody!

0:40:04 > 0:40:07I was reminiscing about my horrible dates.

0:40:07 > 0:40:08And one horrible date I had

0:40:08 > 0:40:11was when this guy picked me up in a minivan.

0:40:11 > 0:40:14ALL LAUGH

0:40:14 > 0:40:18With rims! And tinted windows, like, all pimped out!

0:40:18 > 0:40:23I was just, like, "Oh, my God, I do not want to get in this minivan!"

0:40:23 > 0:40:25What I should have done in that situation,

0:40:25 > 0:40:29once I saw the minivan, I should have twisted my ankle.

0:40:29 > 0:40:32LAUGHTER

0:40:32 > 0:40:35Hey!

0:40:35 > 0:40:40Right now I'm married to me. I'm very selfish.

0:40:40 > 0:40:42I'm getting really set in my ways.

0:40:42 > 0:40:46You know, it's really sad because there's a few great guys out there

0:40:46 > 0:40:49that, you know, are great, great guys.

0:40:49 > 0:40:51I mean, wonderful people.

0:40:51 > 0:40:55But at the end of the day it's just, like, I really need to talk

0:40:55 > 0:41:00to that man in the mirror, because they're a little crazy sometimes.

0:41:01 > 0:41:05You have big lips. They belong on a black guy.

0:41:05 > 0:41:09That's why I like black guys, they have nice lips. Are you black?

0:41:09 > 0:41:10No.

0:41:10 > 0:41:12I only date black guys.

0:41:12 > 0:41:15I have to say you don't.

0:41:15 > 0:41:19- OK, so...- Brett.- And?

0:41:19 > 0:41:24I can just point, like, here. How far is the place, the gym?

0:41:24 > 0:41:26- Dan?- Yeah!

0:41:26 > 0:41:29One white guy. I've dated one white guy.

0:41:29 > 0:41:33That's already two. I know another one who lives in Malibu.

0:41:35 > 0:41:38Like, I don't mind white guys. I just prefer black guys.

0:41:42 > 0:41:43Ah!

0:41:43 > 0:41:47Mackie! Mackie!

0:41:47 > 0:41:50Go make money.

0:41:50 > 0:41:54I'm really, really turning red right now.

0:41:54 > 0:41:57Sasha, you're going to have a hernia, be careful.

0:41:57 > 0:41:59SHE LAUGHS

0:41:59 > 0:42:00Oh, my God!

0:42:00 > 0:42:02Ew, I would never date Sash!

0:42:02 > 0:42:04Oh, my God, I'm going to throw up!

0:42:04 > 0:42:06Oh, give me a minute! LAUGHS

0:42:06 > 0:42:08Ew!

0:42:10 > 0:42:12Oh, no! Sash?

0:42:12 > 0:42:16Yuck! Yuck, yuck, yuck.

0:42:16 > 0:42:18And I hope he doesn't take that the wrong way, but yuck.

0:42:20 > 0:42:25I'd like for one day that I could think about getting married.

0:42:25 > 0:42:30My ideal guy has a body, he plays Xbox with me.

0:42:30 > 0:42:34I want to play tennis for ever, can't be having kids and doing that.

0:42:34 > 0:42:35I want to sleep all day,

0:42:35 > 0:42:38I don't want to have to do activities with the kids.

0:42:38 > 0:42:41She's started saying, "I'll get married when I'm 45, 50 years old.

0:42:41 > 0:42:43"That's when I'll be ready."

0:42:43 > 0:42:47So that's her new thing.

0:42:47 > 0:42:50She's, like, "I have to... Because I don't want anyone telling me

0:42:50 > 0:42:53"what I can and can't do. I don't want anyone telling me

0:42:53 > 0:42:56"how to spend my money, I don't want anyone doing that."

0:42:58 > 0:43:01- That's your spring line. - So what will the line be?

0:43:05 > 0:43:08This dress, you see the front is very simple,

0:43:08 > 0:43:12and this has like a square neckline so it's very flattering.

0:43:12 > 0:43:15So what we did is this right here.

0:43:15 > 0:43:19I think their style is very independent, quite rebellious.

0:43:19 > 0:43:21They're not interested in looking like anybody else.

0:43:21 > 0:43:23Nor do they really care what anybody else thinks.

0:43:23 > 0:43:25The biggest challenge for me when I play

0:43:25 > 0:43:28is deciding what colour I'm going to wear.

0:43:28 > 0:43:32- COMMENTATOR:- Now, I'm no aficionado, Tracy, you'll be relieved to hear,

0:43:32 > 0:43:35but I'm told that's a new range of nail polish

0:43:35 > 0:43:40and the purple is called Grape, Set and Match.

0:43:40 > 0:43:41Get a look at her dress.

0:43:41 > 0:43:43Apparently called the Wonderland Dress,

0:43:43 > 0:43:45inspired by Alice in Wonderland.

0:43:45 > 0:43:48- REPORTER:- What was worse, some say, the flesh-coloured shorts

0:43:48 > 0:43:51she wore underneath. And, yes, she is wearing shorts.

0:43:51 > 0:43:53- ANNA WINTOUR:- Tennis was very conservative,

0:43:53 > 0:43:57and I think it's thanks to players like Andre Agassi

0:43:57 > 0:44:01and Venus and Serena that the whole look of tennis has totally changed.

0:44:01 > 0:44:06It's easy to wear a pretty dress and they're not interested in that,

0:44:06 > 0:44:10and that's part of who they are and why people pay attention.

0:44:10 > 0:44:12Attention has to be paid to them.

0:44:17 > 0:44:18I'm going to the doctors saying,

0:44:18 > 0:44:20"I don't feel like I'm getting enough air,"

0:44:20 > 0:44:23or "I just don't have the stamina to last".

0:44:23 > 0:44:27I train the same amount or more than everyone else with half the result.

0:44:27 > 0:44:29CROWD WHOOPS

0:44:29 > 0:44:34She's actually going to have a match probably in two or three hours

0:44:34 > 0:44:37but she's saying how she just woke up today

0:44:37 > 0:44:40and she's feeling really tired.

0:44:40 > 0:44:43Is there anything that you recommend?

0:44:43 > 0:44:46I was diagnosed with Sjogren's this summer.

0:44:46 > 0:44:48It's kind of hard to describe.

0:44:48 > 0:44:51You know, it's pretty much just, like, not having any energy

0:44:51 > 0:44:56at all and feeling like you're sick, but you don't have a cold or a flu.

0:45:03 > 0:45:04How are you, what's happening?

0:45:09 > 0:45:10OK.

0:45:14 > 0:45:15Oh, OK.

0:45:19 > 0:45:24This summer I started having more issues, just not feeling good.

0:45:24 > 0:45:29My hand started swelling and I started having joint pain.

0:45:29 > 0:45:32I couldn't control my shots, like, I had no feel left,

0:45:32 > 0:45:34like, they were going out my feet.

0:45:34 > 0:45:37So in a lot of ways it's good that that happened,

0:45:37 > 0:45:39so that way I could understand what's wrong with me

0:45:39 > 0:45:41and go on and get treatment.

0:45:54 > 0:46:00You have to be patient and let it work.

0:46:00 > 0:46:01You can't rush it.

0:46:26 > 0:46:28and now she can actually get better.

0:46:28 > 0:46:32I don't know, the thing is I should probably go to the gym and eat,

0:46:32 > 0:46:36but I'm having a hard time doing the things I'm supposed to do nowadays.

0:47:33 > 0:47:36I don't want you to sit here and say that I'm the only one

0:47:39 > 0:47:41See, I know I need to improve,

0:47:41 > 0:47:44but I'm just asking you to do better as well.

0:47:46 > 0:47:48and be, like, "I did great."

0:47:49 > 0:47:51What? I just told you today...

0:47:53 > 0:47:55I know, but I'm being honest with you too,

0:47:55 > 0:48:00- and I felt that I played a good tennis today out there on the court. - And I say that you didn't.

0:48:01 > 0:48:04I played like shit.

0:48:04 > 0:48:07I couldn't be more upset with how I played.

0:48:08 > 0:48:12I know I'm not going to convince Serena in that moment

0:48:12 > 0:48:15to have her saying, "OK, Sash, you're right."

0:48:15 > 0:48:17Like, she would never, ever say that.

0:48:18 > 0:48:20Congratulations, baby.

0:48:20 > 0:48:22What are you doing now?

0:48:22 > 0:48:25Watching your daughter kick ass.

0:48:25 > 0:48:27Yeah, yeah, but what else are you doing?

0:48:27 > 0:48:29Watch her kick ass tomorrow.

0:49:50 > 0:49:52I don't think she looks lethargic, I think she looks tight.

0:49:52 > 0:49:56It's showing up in her serve, which is usually her go-to move.

0:50:00 > 0:50:03Who is this woman masquerading as the three-time champion?

0:50:05 > 0:50:08First time she's lost a set here in this championship.

0:50:24 > 0:50:27She shouted in the middle of that shot.

0:50:27 > 0:50:29The ball hadn't landed and she was saying, "Come on".

0:50:29 > 0:50:31- She should play a let. - That's bad form.

0:50:31 > 0:50:32That is bad form.

0:50:37 > 0:50:39I don't know if it's her point.

0:51:05 > 0:51:08Relax, shake it off. Shake it off.

0:51:08 > 0:51:12To give Stosur the point was infuriating, and I think it went too far.

0:51:26 > 0:51:29She makes it personal with this umpire,

0:51:29 > 0:51:32who in my opinion just did her job and did it appropriately.

0:51:32 > 0:51:34and what she said on the changeover, in my mind,

0:51:34 > 0:51:38was totally unprofessional and really classless, to be honest.

0:51:38 > 0:51:42I mean, I think it was stupid, but I wouldn't say it was classless.

0:51:56 > 0:52:01People say a thousand times worse and they think it's cute.

0:52:01 > 0:52:04And I say, "You're ugly on the inside,"

0:52:04 > 0:52:07which is the most geekish thing anyone could possibly say.

0:52:07 > 0:52:11If I'd said that in high school I would have got beaten up.

0:52:50 > 0:52:53She went around the same time. Coming out today morning again,

0:52:53 > 0:52:55it's not easy.

0:52:55 > 0:52:57I think maybe all these little aspects put together

0:52:57 > 0:53:01definitely slowed her down on the court a little bit today.

0:53:01 > 0:53:02Are you with me?

0:55:13 > 0:55:17it's kind of woken people up to the reality that there will be

0:55:17 > 0:55:20a tremendous void when they're gone.
