0:11:47 > 0:11:49but it's just good to have someone there to...
0:11:49 > 0:11:51Like when I'm away by myself,
0:11:51 > 0:11:54when I go out of England, if I was away for like three weeks,
0:11:54 > 0:11:55I probably wouldn't call him at all

0:11:58 > 0:12:00- No, that's how we are.- That's how I am.
0:12:00 > 0:12:03Like I'd probably speak to my friends, but I don't know.
0:12:03 > 0:12:04If I had a good round,
0:12:04 > 0:12:08I'd just be like, "Yeah, I played well. Thanks, Dad." That's it.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12I'm one of these people, if I'm not...

0:13:14 > 0:13:19Even sometimes she's wrong, but she sorts it out herself eventually.
0:13:19 > 0:13:22And a lot of parents would say to their child,
0:13:22 > 0:13:26"You don't know it all," and they tell them that.
0:13:26 > 0:13:27That's right.
0:13:27 > 0:13:30They...they do.
0:13:30 > 0:13:32And they can tell them it,
0:13:32 > 0:13:34but the kids have got to learn it themselves.

0:14:04 > 0:14:06OK, I don't have any of them,
0:14:06 > 0:14:08but, no, all the money went towards Charley
0:14:08 > 0:14:13to let her do what she wants cos she enjoys it.
0:14:13 > 0:14:16I've always been used to him being so supportive to me.
0:14:16 > 0:14:19So, it's kind of like, "Ah, I take it for granted,"
0:14:19 > 0:14:22where actually I'm now starting to realise
0:14:22 > 0:14:24that my dad and my mum specially have been really good.
0:14:24 > 0:14:27My mum, she doesn't know too much about golf.
0:14:27 > 0:14:29I remember the first time she came and watched me play.
0:14:29 > 0:14:31I was about eight years old
0:14:31 > 0:14:33and I hit my six iron to like five feet and I thought...
0:14:33 > 0:14:35everyone thought it was a great shot.
0:14:35 > 0:14:37And she turns around and goes to Dad,
0:14:37 > 0:14:40"Oh, well, that wasn't very good, was it?" And Dad was like,
0:14:40 > 0:14:42"She just hit it to five feet with a six iron."
0:14:42 > 0:14:44And she was like, "Well, aren't you meant to hole it?"
0:14:44 > 0:14:47But I think she's understood more of the game now.
0:14:47 > 0:14:50And she gets...she enjoys it a lot.
0:14:50 > 0:14:53Baseinka's, she's pretty much like Charley.
0:14:53 > 0:14:57She just gets on with it and she understands that we have to go away.
0:14:57 > 0:14:59I mean, she couldn't come here
0:14:59 > 0:15:01cos, I mean, she's had a stroke. She's on warfarin.
0:15:01 > 0:15:04She'd have to have injections every time before she gets on a plane.
0:15:04 > 0:15:06And she don't want that, you know?
0:15:06 > 0:15:11So, yeah, we've both got our roles to play in supporting her
0:15:11 > 0:15:12and that's what we do.
0:15:12 > 0:15:15I don't mind. It's rather sad because it gets a bit lonely.
0:15:15 > 0:15:18I've got my other family around me,
0:15:18 > 0:15:21but it's just at night when you come home from work
0:15:21 > 0:15:26and the house is empty and all I've got is a smelly dog and just myself.
0:15:26 > 0:15:28But then I do miss them a lot.
0:15:28 > 0:15:32But then it's so nice because I've got the remote control to myself.
0:15:32 > 0:15:35It's tidy, you know?
0:15:35 > 0:15:39I can eat what I want and I can see them on telly or the internet.
0:15:39 > 0:15:43It's clear that Basienka misses you both
0:15:43 > 0:15:45when you're away in far-flung countries like this.
0:15:45 > 0:15:47Well, that's good, isn't it? Yeah, I mean, she loves me.
0:15:47 > 0:15:49You know, that's good.
0:15:49 > 0:15:51She knows that she's got to do certain things
0:15:51 > 0:15:53and that I've got to do certain things.
0:15:53 > 0:15:55I've said, "Bas, why don't we swap?"
0:15:55 > 0:15:58She says, "Oh, no, I can't. I know nothing about golf."
0:15:58 > 0:16:01So she... We get home and she plays her role.
0:16:01 > 0:16:04She gets all the clothes ready.
0:16:04 > 0:16:06Sometimes we have to get them ready
0:16:06 > 0:16:09as soon as we get back and go the next day.
0:16:09 > 0:16:11So we both...both work together.
0:16:14 > 0:16:15As a professional golfer,
0:16:15 > 0:16:18Charley will spend several months of the year travelling.
0:16:18 > 0:16:21It'd be easy to get distracted,
0:16:21 > 0:16:23but her friends help keep her grounded.
0:16:23 > 0:16:27I need my friends to like go wild with sometimes.
0:16:27 > 0:16:29I need someone to look after me and keep me calm
0:16:29 > 0:16:33and I need my sister to learn from what to do and what not to do.
0:16:33 > 0:16:35Every probably Friday and Saturday,
0:16:35 > 0:16:38I just meet with my friends and relax and stuff.
0:16:38 > 0:16:41Despite knowing Charley so well,
0:16:41 > 0:16:43she still has a few surprises.
0:16:43 > 0:16:46I do a lot of like OCD things...
0:16:46 > 0:16:49What about when you used to leave the house...
0:16:49 > 0:16:51Oh, yeah, when I used to leave the house,
0:16:51 > 0:16:53I have to make...touch everything. It's weird.
0:16:53 > 0:16:57Make sure I play with the right ball handle. I have to think...
0:16:57 > 0:17:00Round the whole round of golf, I hardly think of anything.
0:17:00 > 0:17:03I have to think of like, to keep myself concentrated,
0:17:03 > 0:17:05I always think of the number four for some reason.
0:17:05 > 0:17:07I don't know why cos if I think of four,
0:17:07 > 0:17:09I think if you shoot four under par every round,
0:17:09 > 0:17:13then you're going to win a tournament. It's so weird.
0:17:13 > 0:17:16I have to wear pink socks on Thursdays and Fridays
0:17:16 > 0:17:19and blue socks on... No, no, sorry.
0:17:19 > 0:17:21Yeah, I have to wear blue socks on Fridays,
0:17:21 > 0:17:22sorry, Saturdays and Sundays.
0:17:22 > 0:17:25I used to always wear orange on the first day of tournament,
0:17:25 > 0:17:27but I've outgrown that now.
0:17:27 > 0:17:29THEY LAUGH
0:17:29 > 0:17:30I've outgrown the top.
0:17:30 > 0:17:32Erm... Yeah.
0:17:36 > 0:17:38There's a good hit.
0:17:38 > 0:17:40One of Charley's biggest admirers
0:17:40 > 0:17:43is two-time major winner Tony Jacklin.
0:17:43 > 0:17:47This is not rocket science, this thing. What you've got...
0:17:47 > 0:17:51You've got all of this amazing ability
0:17:51 > 0:17:56and you've got to just take care of the simple, simple stuff.
0:17:56 > 0:17:58The pair have become firm friends.
0:17:58 > 0:18:02Today, they've come to Wentworth.
0:18:04 > 0:18:06Lots of mud here.
0:18:06 > 0:18:09Blimey! You need Wellington boots.
0:18:09 > 0:18:13I've been trying to work on my tempo so much cos, after Solheim,
0:18:13 > 0:18:17my tempo got fast because you know when you get excited...
0:18:17 > 0:18:20- Yeah, I told... We went all through this, didn't we, at home?- Yeah.
0:18:20 > 0:18:24And I said to you when I won the Open, it was all about tempo.
0:18:24 > 0:18:28- Yeah, exactly.- Tom Weiskopf put a thing on my locker the last day...
0:18:28 > 0:18:31- Yeah.- ..at the US open - Tempo -
0:18:31 > 0:18:33- and that's all we thought about. - Yeah.
0:18:33 > 0:18:36When you've got all the fundamentals that you've got,
0:18:36 > 0:18:40that's all you've got to think about.
0:18:40 > 0:18:44I talked to her and she's still like a kid to me, you know what I mean?
0:18:44 > 0:18:46She responds like, children -
0:18:46 > 0:18:49you're not sure whether they're taking it all in, you know,
0:18:49 > 0:18:54the importance of what you're actually trying to get across.
0:18:54 > 0:18:56When I went to America in '67,
0:18:56 > 0:18:58I found that the legs...
0:18:58 > 0:19:01The swing from the ground up is the important thing.
0:19:01 > 0:19:04Tempo comes from following your legs,
0:19:04 > 0:19:09letting your legs lead in terms of swing rhythm.
0:19:09 > 0:19:13And never rushing because humans want to rush all the time
0:19:13 > 0:19:15especially when they get nervous.
0:19:23 > 0:19:25Well, that was a good putt.
0:19:25 > 0:19:26I want the best for her
0:19:26 > 0:19:30and she's told me she wants to be a great player and she's...
0:19:30 > 0:19:35It's all there. She's already a very, very good player.
0:19:35 > 0:19:38But in order to be great, you've got to beat the best
0:19:38 > 0:19:41and I don't see any reason
0:19:41 > 0:19:43why she can't be up there
0:19:43 > 0:19:46right at the top of the game.
0:19:48 > 0:19:51A bit late.
0:19:51 > 0:19:52Good afternoon, everyone.
0:19:52 > 0:19:56We would like to welcome Charley Hull into the interview room.
0:19:56 > 0:19:58First of all, congratulations.
0:19:58 > 0:20:00What a fabulous round today.
0:20:00 > 0:20:026 under 66. Now sit at 8 under overall.
0:20:02 > 0:20:06Just a few shots off the lead at a major championship. What was...
0:20:06 > 0:20:10Back in California, Charley is charging through the field.
0:20:10 > 0:20:14With just one round to go, she's only two shots off the lead.
0:20:14 > 0:20:16Her first major title is in sight.
0:20:16 > 0:20:19You know, I've always told her
0:20:19 > 0:20:21that when you go out and play golf,
0:20:21 > 0:20:24if you're with your mates or in a championship,
0:20:24 > 0:20:29you don't try no harder when you're playing in a championship
0:20:29 > 0:20:31than you do when you're playing with your mates
0:20:31 > 0:20:33cos you hit the shot in the major,
0:20:33 > 0:20:35you hit the shot with your mates.
0:20:35 > 0:20:38Why would you play...try any harder?
0:20:38 > 0:20:41So, if you work on that the same,
0:20:41 > 0:20:43it'll end up fine.
0:20:43 > 0:20:46And when you saw her hitting those shots this afternoon,
0:20:46 > 0:20:49could you read what was going on in your daughter's mind?
0:20:49 > 0:20:52I've never been able to do that all me life. No.
0:20:52 > 0:20:55No. Who does? Not much. She's...
0:20:55 > 0:20:58She was thinking about her dog at home and she says,
0:20:58 > 0:21:01"I just stand there and look around and think about other things, Dad.
0:21:01 > 0:21:05"And then I look at the shot and think, time to hit the shot now."
0:21:06 > 0:21:09You're going a bit too fast. I can't keep up with you.
0:21:09 > 0:21:11- But we haven't been past it, Dad. - Sorry?
0:21:11 > 0:21:13- We haven't been past it.- Charley. - Yeah?
0:21:13 > 0:21:16'I've never been on a holiday before or any golfing holiday.
0:21:16 > 0:21:21'So I've never spent more than a week without swinging a golf club.'
0:21:21 > 0:21:24Charley left school at 13 to focus on her golf.
0:21:24 > 0:21:26She had home tuition,
0:21:26 > 0:21:28but has never taken any exams.
0:21:28 > 0:21:31'People usually say school comes first, you know,
0:21:31 > 0:21:33'especially a lot of kids in America,
0:21:33 > 0:21:35'but for me, golf comes first
0:21:35 > 0:21:37'cos I think I can always come back
0:21:37 > 0:21:38'to my schooling later in life.
0:21:38 > 0:21:40'You only live once.
0:21:40 > 0:21:42'A lot of people say YOLO, but...
0:21:42 > 0:21:43'It is. You only live once.'
0:21:43 > 0:21:46- Hey! Do you do fresh orange?- Pardon me?- Fresh orange.
0:21:46 > 0:21:48- Lemonade.- Oh, just lemonade. - Lemonade.
0:21:48 > 0:21:51Fresh squeezed lemonade. We are the only fresh squeezed lemonade
0:21:51 > 0:21:54- in the entire village here.- Right, lovely. Cheers.
0:21:54 > 0:21:57- Dad, can I have a lemonade, please? - Yeah. Go on.
0:21:57 > 0:22:01'Yeah, it'd be great if I won this one, but I'm really happy at home.
0:22:01 > 0:22:04'I've never been really interested in the lifestyle and like,
0:22:04 > 0:22:07'oh, I want to live in Florida and be with so many different people.
0:22:07 > 0:22:09'I'm pretty happy with my friends.'
0:22:09 > 0:22:13- Yeah, it's real good.- Lovely. - Five dollars.- Cheers.
0:22:13 > 0:22:14I'm incredibly competitive.
0:22:14 > 0:22:17I want to win this now and we're not even playing for anything.
0:22:17 > 0:22:20That's just... I think if you're a professional sports person...
0:22:20 > 0:22:22if me and Mum are playing Countdown,
0:22:22 > 0:22:25I hate it when I lose. I know that's embarrassing,
0:22:25 > 0:22:27but that's just what professional sport is all about.
0:22:27 > 0:22:29- You want to win.- Yeah.
0:22:29 > 0:22:32Laura Davies is Britain's most successful woman golfer.
0:22:32 > 0:22:34She's been at the top for over 20 years
0:22:34 > 0:22:36and has first-hand experience
0:22:36 > 0:22:39of how the sport has changed.
0:22:39 > 0:22:43How has it changed since you were younger?
0:22:43 > 0:22:45Well, I think the biggest thing is the likes of yourself
0:22:45 > 0:22:49and, you know, Lydia Ko, all such young players and also good
0:22:49 > 0:22:51whereas, before, it was almost like
0:22:51 > 0:22:53you had to lose a load of tournaments
0:22:53 > 0:22:55before you could be considered to win one
0:22:55 > 0:22:57because people just didn't turn pro
0:22:57 > 0:23:00and immediately become great players.
0:23:00 > 0:23:02And I think that's the biggest difference -
0:23:02 > 0:23:05the age in the game now - cos all the great players when I was younger
0:23:05 > 0:23:07- were all in their mid-30s.- Yeah.
0:23:07 > 0:23:11And now it seems the best players are in their mid-to-low 20s.
0:23:11 > 0:23:14- And obviously there's some teen stars.- Yeah.
0:23:14 > 0:23:18And, you know, it's great.
0:23:18 > 0:23:21I think it's great for the sport cos that's what people want to see.
0:23:21 > 0:23:25And it's good. I think women's golf is in good hands now.
0:23:25 > 0:23:29It may be in good hands, but Laura doesn't think it will be easy
0:23:29 > 0:23:30for Charley and other young players
0:23:30 > 0:23:34to break down existing perceptions about women in sport.
0:23:34 > 0:23:35I don't think anyone will,
0:23:35 > 0:23:38especially when you have a sport where men and women play it
0:23:38 > 0:23:41and all they're interested in is Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods.
0:23:41 > 0:23:43Half of the men's tour don't get a look-in
0:23:43 > 0:23:46because it's all about those best few players
0:23:46 > 0:23:48and we'll never really be held
0:23:48 > 0:23:50in the same esteem as the men.
0:23:50 > 0:23:52Whether that's right or wrong... probably not,
0:23:52 > 0:23:55but that's just the way it is in professional sport.
0:23:57 > 0:24:01While women's golf may not be as high profile as the men's game,
0:24:01 > 0:24:03there are hopes that this could change
0:24:03 > 0:24:06and fresh blood like Charley can certainly help.
0:24:06 > 0:24:09Imaginary flag just behind me over there, yeah?
0:24:09 > 0:24:12The teenager's fast becoming a golfing cover girl.
0:24:12 > 0:24:17This photo shoot is for the European tour magazine Golf Chic.
0:24:17 > 0:24:20Well, obviously the sport of golf is changing.
0:24:20 > 0:24:22It does have quite a stuffy image,
0:24:22 > 0:24:25certainly to those who perhaps don't play the game
0:24:25 > 0:24:26and know the reality.
0:24:26 > 0:24:28I just think she's a great role model
0:24:28 > 0:24:30for all golfers of all ages,
0:24:30 > 0:24:33from the young to the very old, so we're really, really pleased
0:24:33 > 0:24:35she's going to be on the front cover.
0:24:35 > 0:24:36CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS
0:24:36 > 0:24:38Do you ever stop and think,
0:24:38 > 0:24:41"Blimey, I'm on the front cover of this magazine?"
0:24:41 > 0:24:43No, not really.
0:24:43 > 0:24:46I don't really like looking at myself in those photos, to be honest.
0:24:46 > 0:24:50I'm just like normal, so I just carry on doing what I do best - my golf.
0:24:50 > 0:24:52Have you ever been stopped in the street, Charley?
0:24:52 > 0:24:54Have I ever been stopped in the in the street?
0:24:54 > 0:24:57By people saying, "Are you Charley Hull? Are you the golfer?"
0:24:57 > 0:25:00Erm, no, I was actually in Nando's the other day
0:25:00 > 0:25:03and someone was like, "You're Charley Hull the golfer,"
0:25:03 > 0:25:05cos he was like from Corby - I can't do a Corby accent -
0:25:05 > 0:25:09but...that's what happened and me and my friend were like, "Yeah."
0:25:09 > 0:25:11And how did the conversation go?
0:25:11 > 0:25:13I just looked away and carried on eating my chicken.
0:25:13 > 0:25:15CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS
0:25:19 > 0:25:21- RADIO HOST:- 'Julie Buehler here.
0:25:21 > 0:25:24'Final day of the Kraft Nabisco Championship
0:25:24 > 0:25:26'and what incredible final pairings
0:25:26 > 0:25:29'we have for golf fans all over the world.
0:25:29 > 0:25:34'Michelle Wie and Lexi Thompson headline the final pairing.
0:25:34 > 0:25:36'If anyone is going to catch them,
0:25:36 > 0:25:39'it might be Charley Hull, the young phenom from Britain.'
0:25:39 > 0:25:41It's just minutes to go,
0:25:41 > 0:25:43before Charley's final round.
0:25:47 > 0:25:49Her preparation complete,
0:25:49 > 0:25:52there's understandable tension for team Hull
0:25:52 > 0:25:54as they wait for her to start.
0:25:54 > 0:25:58Good luck. Nice coverage in the papers this morning...
0:25:58 > 0:26:00'She doesn't want money.
0:26:00 > 0:26:01'Never been interested in that
0:26:01 > 0:26:04'or fame. She just wants to win.
0:26:04 > 0:26:06'Honestly. That's Charley.'
0:26:09 > 0:26:11Zip all the way round, Chars,
0:26:11 > 0:26:14- there's some things in there if you need them.- Great.
0:26:14 > 0:26:16With her first major title in sight,
0:26:16 > 0:26:19it's the moment Charley's been dreaming of.
0:26:19 > 0:26:20See you, darling. Have fun.
0:26:20 > 0:26:23Play out your heart. Enjoy. All right?
0:26:23 > 0:26:26I used to be quite a shy person when I was younger,
0:26:26 > 0:26:28but now I just kind of think you only live once,
0:26:28 > 0:26:30just get out there and do what you got to do.
0:26:30 > 0:26:32You're not going to die if you hit a bad shot.
0:26:32 > 0:26:35You know, it's just that kind of attitude.
0:26:35 > 0:26:38Just go out there and play the game and enjoy it.
0:26:38 > 0:26:40And from England...
