0:01:19 > 0:01:23Mixed martial arts - cage fighting as most people know it -

0:01:23 > 0:01:25fills that void.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32I don't understand what the problem is today, mate. I just don't feel...

0:01:32 > 0:01:34You've got to start manning up,

0:01:34 > 0:01:37- do you know what I mean? - I am manning up.

0:01:37 > 0:01:41Like, I've always fought the system. I've always fought authority.

0:01:41 > 0:01:43But I had to do that growing up.

0:01:45 > 0:01:46I haven't got the anger any more.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48I focus that into my mixed martial arts.

0:01:50 > 0:01:55Mixed martial arts changed my life for the better, really.

0:01:55 > 0:01:56I was 18 stone.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11That's my testosterone booster.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13Really good stuff, this is.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16Helps to lift my testosterone levels up.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18As you're getting a little bit older,

0:03:18 > 0:03:20your testosterone levels drop, you know,

0:03:20 > 0:03:23so being a man, I like to take a little bit,

0:03:23 > 0:03:25just boost it up a little bit.

0:03:30 > 0:03:34I'm Ross Pointon, I'm 37 years of age, from Stoke-on-Trent.

0:03:56 > 0:03:57It gave me something to live for,

0:03:57 > 0:04:01gave me something to work towards, gave me a goal.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06I hit rock bottom.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09I was at a crossroads at one point in my life...

0:04:09 > 0:04:11Um...

0:04:11 > 0:04:14..mixing with the wrong crowds, getting into the wrong things.

0:04:17 > 0:04:22I was into drugs, crime, you know, easy ways of making money.

0:04:22 > 0:04:23And I knew I had to change that.

0:04:23 > 0:04:27Otherwise, if I didn't, I was going to end up in a box or in jail.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32Back in the day, when I was younger in Stoke,

0:04:32 > 0:04:35you know, there was a lot of industry.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38The steel industry, pottery industry

0:04:38 > 0:04:39and the coal industry as well.

0:04:42 > 0:04:45Obviously, generations of father to son

0:04:45 > 0:04:47have passed down through these industries,

0:04:47 > 0:04:49and when them industries collapsed,

0:04:49 > 0:04:53there was nothing for anybody, they had nowhere to go, you know.

0:05:03 > 0:05:07For a young man, be demoralising knowing that when you finish school,

0:05:07 > 0:05:10you haven't got an industry to go towards.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12What are you going to do with yourself?

0:05:16 > 0:05:18Mixed martial arts fills that void,

0:05:18 > 0:05:20something that's missing in their life.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24Hopefully, I can help a lot these young lads, as well,

0:05:24 > 0:05:29to hopefully make something of their lives and turn their lives around.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35Even if it's just giving them some positive mental attitude.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42On the outside, swing your arms.

0:05:44 > 0:05:48The next Night Of The Gladiators is in two months' time.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51We're in fight camp zone, which is high intensity training.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56These guys are beginners and they want to get their feet wet.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11A lot of these guys are coming straight off the street.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14You know, a lot of them have been down to rock bottom.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18Some of the guys may have problems in their personal lives,

0:06:18 > 0:06:22you know, anything from drugs, alcohol, family issues.

0:06:23 > 0:06:27Don't listen to that weak voice in your head that's saying, "I'm tired."

0:06:27 > 0:06:29Listen to the strong voice that says,

0:06:29 > 0:06:32"No, we're going to carry on, keep working."

0:06:33 > 0:06:36Mixed martial arts pulls them away from them problems.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45I love fighting, basically.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50It's just a buzz for me, it's just a big adrenaline rush.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53It's the danger, isn't it? It's the fear of it, as well.

0:07:09 > 0:07:10He's a street kid, you know,

0:07:10 > 0:07:13so he's a little bit feisty and a little bit loud.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15Fight's a fight.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52I love mixed martial arts, cage fighting.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58It's a release for me.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01It's a release of a lot of stress, frustrations.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03Keeps me on the straight and narrow.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09That's health. That's nutrition.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12'..to my left, in the red corner,

0:08:12 > 0:08:14'let's hear it for...

0:08:14 > 0:08:19'Tim Walker!'

0:08:20 > 0:08:22I've had two cage fights.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25I got the feel for the cage then.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31This is the guillotine.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37It's the excitement and the adrenaline what I had.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39And I never felt like that before.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43Some ground and pound.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50You don't think it's brutal. You just do what you do, don't you?

0:08:50 > 0:08:53And then, obviously, you watch it back, you can think like that,

0:08:53 > 0:08:56but you don't get in trouble for doing it in here.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04Keeping me out of prison, as well, cos I'd been in prison for a while.

0:09:06 > 0:09:11I've done a few sentences, like, different...

0:09:11 > 0:09:13I did a four-year sentence,

0:09:13 > 0:09:15and I've done ten months here, six months there.

0:09:15 > 0:09:19I've been done for assaults on police officers, criminal damage,

0:09:19 > 0:09:22affray charges, actual bodily harm charges.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27'The winner is,

0:09:27 > 0:09:29'in the red corner,

0:09:29 > 0:09:32'Tim Walker.'

0:09:32 > 0:09:34And there's not a better feeling than that.

0:09:45 > 0:09:48Ooh! Fuck!

0:09:48 > 0:09:50Ahhh!

0:09:51 > 0:09:52HE GROANS

0:09:57 > 0:10:00- You all right, dude?- Yeah, yeah. Fucking hell, lad.

0:10:02 > 0:10:04Fucking hell, mate.

0:10:05 > 0:10:08I think every man likes fighting, don't they?

0:10:08 > 0:10:10- You all right, son?- Yeah, yeah.

0:10:10 > 0:10:14You've got to have that inner strength built in, like the heart.

0:10:14 > 0:10:15Let's go.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22I've been fighting since October 2014.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27I've lost a fight and I've won a fight so far.

0:10:33 > 0:10:35Benny, when he first came here, was unfit.

0:10:38 > 0:10:40Didn't have much technique.

0:10:43 > 0:10:45He's picked himself up off his arse

0:10:45 > 0:10:48and he's made the plunge to change his life

0:10:48 > 0:10:50and work towards something.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56Great session tonight, guys. Well done, man.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58- One, two, three... ALL:- Team Gladiator.

0:11:11 > 0:11:13About quarter to nine.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16Just making some oats and a coffee.

0:11:16 > 0:11:20Pretty simple, really, but it's how I start my day.

0:11:20 > 0:11:24My name is Benjamin Kirkland. I'm 27.

0:11:24 > 0:11:28I'm a single man, like. I haven't got a job at the minute.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34I used to live for the weekend, basically.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37Work all week and get paid on the Friday.

0:11:37 > 0:11:39Saturday, I'd go football.

0:11:39 > 0:11:42End up spunking all my money.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45Do at least 150 quid within one day on booze.

0:11:47 > 0:11:48Easy.

0:11:51 > 0:11:52Be out all night

0:11:52 > 0:11:56and I'd get home about seven o'clock in the morning,

0:11:56 > 0:11:58sleep all day,

0:11:58 > 0:11:59wake up, then eat like a pig.

0:12:01 > 0:12:06Sausage, bacon, pizza, cheeseburgers, chips.

0:12:06 > 0:12:10Like, it makes me feel sick talking about it now, like.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12And that was every weekend.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14No wonder I was piling the weight on, like.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18Yeah, this is me.

0:12:19 > 0:12:23And I do look big on that picture. Jesus!

0:12:23 > 0:12:27Look like I've got three chins there.

0:12:27 > 0:12:28Look at the belly on that!

0:12:31 > 0:12:34I'd come to the stage where all this drinking and eating shit,

0:12:34 > 0:12:36it was just taking its toll.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42I wasn't happy with my life and how I looked at all.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47It's like, I don't know, like, body conscious.

0:12:47 > 0:12:51Thinking to myself, "I'm going to have to change this," like.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01October 2014, I was 18 stone, dot on.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04And, obviously, now I'm 13 stone 9.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10I've lost four stone within five months.

0:13:18 > 0:13:20It all stems from this, MMA.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29Everything's starting to get defined, definition.

0:13:31 > 0:13:34Like, I used to have love handles here, belly.

0:13:35 > 0:13:37I'm feeling bones that I haven't felt in a while.

0:13:37 > 0:13:39The abs are starting to come through.

0:13:40 > 0:13:44When I look in that mirror and see everything just solid...

0:13:44 > 0:13:46I'll be happy.

0:13:48 > 0:13:52Benny's dramatically changed over the course of being in the gym.

0:13:52 > 0:13:54He's trimmed down, looking lean,

0:13:54 > 0:13:57you know, a lot more confident in himself.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02As a young man, Benny's a lot more content with himself now.

0:14:07 > 0:14:09Look at the sweat on that.

0:14:09 > 0:14:11That's how you lose weight, innit?

0:14:11 > 0:14:15It's important for young men today to be looking in top shape.

0:14:15 > 0:14:18You know, you see a lot of these magazines and, you know, TV,

0:14:18 > 0:14:21you know, and everybody's looking ripped and lean.

0:14:23 > 0:14:25It's a massive factor to these lads nowadays

0:14:25 > 0:14:29to look good and to feel confident about the way you look.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32Face like Crimewatch, body like Baywatch.

0:14:41 > 0:14:43It's not just about coaching.

0:14:43 > 0:14:44I put the show together as well,

0:14:44 > 0:14:47so I've got to get the tickets out to the fighters,

0:14:47 > 0:14:50prep the fight card, I've got to get the poster designed.

0:14:52 > 0:14:57Night Of The Gladiators cage fighting, Saturday, July, 2015.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00We're trying to get away from the word "cage fighting"

0:15:00 > 0:15:02but, you know, I was doing posters before

0:15:02 > 0:15:04and it said "mixed martial arts" on.

0:15:04 > 0:15:06And I was thinking, you know,

0:15:06 > 0:15:09I'm not really getting much feedback from these.

0:15:09 > 0:15:13You know, so maybe it's because people don't fully understand

0:15:13 > 0:15:17the word "mixed martial arts", you know, or "MMA".

0:15:17 > 0:15:18So I put "cage fighting"

0:15:18 > 0:15:23because the average person on the street can relate to cage fighting,

0:15:23 > 0:15:26because that's where it started from.

0:15:26 > 0:15:28So, I thought, well, put cage fighting on there.

0:15:28 > 0:15:31Even though we're trying to pull it away from that,

0:15:31 > 0:15:34you know, it doesn't make sense, but it does, in a way.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46Ah! Oh, for fuck's sake!

0:15:49 > 0:15:51He's hit me right in the fucking groin.

0:15:51 > 0:15:55Some people think it's barbaric, like dog fighting.

0:15:56 > 0:15:58You know, two guys getting in there,

0:15:58 > 0:16:02smashing ten barrels of crap out of each other.

0:16:03 > 0:16:05Whereas it's far, far from that.

0:16:07 > 0:16:08These guys are athletes.

0:16:09 > 0:16:13Yeah? So jab, right, body, knee. Yeah? Same leg.

0:16:17 > 0:16:20Yeah? MMA this time.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24They fight with skills ranging from boxing...

0:16:26 > 0:16:29..Muay Thai, judo...

0:16:30 > 0:16:31..wrestling...

0:16:33 > 0:16:34..jujitsu.

0:16:35 > 0:16:36BEEPING

0:16:36 > 0:16:39OK? Now grab his head, he grabs the wrist.

0:16:39 > 0:16:43Now just let him get into a false sense of security.

0:16:43 > 0:16:46I'm going to lift up, I penetrate...

0:16:46 > 0:16:49and I pull and bring him down.

0:16:49 > 0:16:51The objective for these guys now is to put the guy on his back,

0:16:51 > 0:16:53get the other guy to submit.

0:16:55 > 0:16:56Bridge, Dan!

0:16:56 > 0:17:01Submission is where your opponent will try and inflict as much pain

0:17:01 > 0:17:03to try and make you tap out.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07It's important that you can endure pain in this sport,

0:17:07 > 0:17:10because the sport's full of pain.

0:17:15 > 0:17:16It's a hardman sport.

0:17:18 > 0:17:19RETCHING

0:17:19 > 0:17:20Don't be sick on these mats!

0:17:22 > 0:17:26It definitely is a sport that separates the men from the boys.

0:17:26 > 0:17:28RETCHING

0:17:41 > 0:17:45Hit the elbow there. Not the wrist.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48Shit, sorry.

0:17:49 > 0:17:50- How's your hand, Tim?- Sore.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55- Well, you know what I said.- Yeah.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59If your coach recommends straight after the fight,

0:17:59 > 0:18:02go and get it checked out, got to listen to your coach.

0:18:02 > 0:18:04I will next time.

0:18:06 > 0:18:10My last fight, I must have bent my wrist as I hit him

0:18:10 > 0:18:11and done some ligaments.

0:18:11 > 0:18:14It's giving me quite a lot of pain. I've got no strength in it.

0:18:24 > 0:18:25Rach, I'm going, yeah?

0:18:25 > 0:18:27- All right, babe.- Right, love.- Yeah.

0:18:28 > 0:18:30It is a bit nerve-racking at the minute

0:18:30 > 0:18:32because my fight's six weeks away.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38If it's not fully healed, I can't fight, really, can I?

0:18:43 > 0:18:45What's happening?

0:18:45 > 0:18:46What's the verdict?

0:18:46 > 0:18:48No breaks, no fractures.

0:18:48 > 0:18:52Could be ligaments or tendons, but they can't tell from the X-rays.

0:18:52 > 0:18:54He says the tendons could harden.

0:18:54 > 0:18:58Just don't use it, he said. Could damage them long-term.

0:33:39 > 0:33:41"You walk out this door now

0:54:05 > 0:54:08It wasn't my lack of training or anything that let me down.

0:54:08 > 0:54:12It was just because of the mental state of mind before the fight.

0:54:19 > 0:54:22Like, I feel a bit let down, I'll be honest with you, I feel let down.

0:54:22 > 0:54:25Fuck.

0:55:36 > 0:55:38went out the window and he just froze.

0:55:40 > 0:55:43If he can't get over that, then, you know, he might as well give up,

0:55:43 > 0:55:47because, like, you know, 90% of fighting is mental.
