0:15:46 > 0:15:50on the planet, as they compete to be crowned world champion.

0:15:54 > 0:15:56London has been here before.

0:15:56 > 0:15:59And is well versed in how to rise to the occasion.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03Five years have passed since London 2012,

0:16:03 > 0:16:07but the memory of those golden moments still shines brightly.

0:16:07 > 0:16:11Never before had Britain been so successful at an Olympics.

0:16:11 > 0:16:15Day after day of triumphs, almost blurring into one.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19But above all others, one Saturday will come to be remembered.

0:16:21 > 0:16:23Jessica Ennis is the Olympic champion!

0:16:23 > 0:16:27Britain was transfixed as the minutes ticked by.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30Greg Rutherford is the Olympic champion.

0:16:30 > 0:16:34As one dreamlike moment unfolded into another.

0:16:34 > 0:16:37Mo Farah, for Great Britain!

0:16:37 > 0:16:38It's gold!

0:16:40 > 0:16:44Every Games needs a home medal at its Olympic Stadium to give it life.

0:16:44 > 0:16:46A night to remember it by.

0:16:46 > 0:16:48This was that defining moment.

0:16:50 > 0:16:52The great triumphs of Jessica Ennis,

0:16:52 > 0:16:53Greg Rutherford

0:16:53 > 0:16:55and Mo Farah

0:16:55 > 0:16:59made that Super Saturday the greatest night in British sport.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02What a night to be British.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05Since then, they've each faced challenges in their own, unique way.

0:17:05 > 0:17:08Challenge I faced too as a world-class athlete.

0:17:09 > 0:17:12Staying on top, defending your title, and family life.

0:17:14 > 0:17:16In this programme, they'll reflect on their successes

0:17:16 > 0:17:19and look to what the future holds,

0:17:19 > 0:17:23as London prepares to welcome the best in the world once again.

0:17:37 > 0:17:41Five years have passed since Super Saturday, and since then,

0:17:41 > 0:17:47Jess, Mo and Greg have each followed their own, unique paths as athletes.

0:17:47 > 0:17:51I'm keen to see how my experience in the sport compares to theirs.

0:17:51 > 0:17:54Johnson, by yards!

0:17:54 > 0:17:57During my own career, I competed in three Olympic Games

0:17:57 > 0:17:59and five World Championships.

0:17:59 > 0:18:00I dealt with the highs and lows

0:18:00 > 0:18:03that come with striving to stay at the top.

0:18:05 > 0:18:08Greg Rutherford, the long jump star of Super Saturday,

0:18:08 > 0:18:11trains to be the best in the world by working with the coach

0:18:11 > 0:18:14who led him to Olympic glory.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17That means spending much of the year in Arizona.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20And I'm keen to see how he and his family are getting on out here.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26- Hey, how are you?- Michael, how are you? Good to see you, are you well?

0:18:26 > 0:18:29- Good, how are you?- Not too bad, thank you.- This is not London!

0:18:29 > 0:18:31- No!- This is a long way.

0:18:31 > 0:18:35- Can you say hello?- What's up? Milo! - Say hello.- What's going on?

0:18:37 > 0:18:41- Hello.- Susie's here.- Pleasure. Good to meet you. Good to meet you.

0:18:41 > 0:18:44- How's everything? - Yeah, not too bad, actually.

0:18:44 > 0:18:46We've been here a little while now, enjoying the sun.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48- As you can tell, I'm very tanned.- Yep, yep.

0:18:50 > 0:18:52- Training going well? - Yeah, not too bad.

0:18:52 > 0:18:56One or two problems as you get older, that's part of it, I think.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59Now my age starts with a three,

0:18:59 > 0:19:02my body's decided that it's going to struggle a little bit with things.

0:19:02 > 0:19:03But we're getting there, I think.

0:19:03 > 0:19:07For me, when it got to a point where, as opposed to waking up

0:19:07 > 0:19:11every morning going, "OK, how hard are we going to push it today?"

0:19:11 > 0:19:15Waking up, hoping everything just days right and stays together.

0:19:15 > 0:19:17- That was the turning point. - Yeah, definitely.

0:19:17 > 0:19:19- But you're not there yet. - Well, I hope not, no.

0:19:19 > 0:19:22I'm definitely getting those days when I wake up and think,

0:19:22 > 0:19:24"How long is it going to take me to get out of bed this morning?"

0:19:24 > 0:19:26Fortunately, I still love what I'm doing.

0:19:26 > 0:19:28And it's obviously so much fun.

0:19:28 > 0:19:29All right, pressure's on.

0:19:31 > 0:19:33Pressure performer, pressure performer!

0:19:36 > 0:19:38If we need Greg to miss, what we have to do is just say,

0:19:38 > 0:19:41if he gets it in, then we're going to get married.

0:19:42 > 0:19:44This is the game that we play...

0:19:44 > 0:19:46This sounds like a part of this discussion

0:19:46 > 0:19:48I shouldn't be involved with!

0:19:53 > 0:19:56As a result of his incredible achievements on the track,

0:19:56 > 0:19:59Mo Farah has become a global star.

0:19:59 > 0:20:02The pursuit of this dominance means that his training also

0:20:02 > 0:20:05takes on an international dimension.

0:20:05 > 0:20:08We're in Font-Romeu, the Pyrenees 2000.

0:20:08 > 0:20:11The GB training camps for the distance guys.

0:20:11 > 0:20:13And one of the reason why we spend a lot of time here is

0:20:13 > 0:20:15because of the elevation.

0:20:16 > 0:20:20It's about almost 7,000 feet, which is not as high as some places I've

0:20:20 > 0:20:23been around the world, but it's decent enough.

0:20:23 > 0:20:26And you've got a good climate, good facilities.

0:20:26 > 0:20:29This is really what distance people need in terms of high altitude.

0:20:29 > 0:20:30It's no secret what we do.

0:20:30 > 0:20:32Back in the day, it used to be the Kenyans

0:20:32 > 0:20:34and the Ethiopians beating everyone.

0:20:34 > 0:20:37And one of the reasons they were beating was they spent

0:20:37 > 0:20:39so much time at high altitude,

0:20:39 > 0:20:42so when they come back to sea level, things are a lot easier.

0:20:45 > 0:20:48Most of the work is done on this track.

0:20:48 > 0:20:50Back again!

0:20:50 > 0:20:51As always.

0:20:53 > 0:20:55This morning, I had a good track session here.

0:20:57 > 0:20:59And it's perfect, it's what you need.

0:20:59 > 0:21:01Distance running is difficult,

0:21:01 > 0:21:03you have to be able to put the miles in if you want it.

0:21:03 > 0:21:06I do average 120 miles a week.

0:21:06 > 0:21:08I wouldn't do that through the year.

0:21:08 > 0:21:10When I'm racing, then you come off a little bit.

0:21:10 > 0:21:13There's no rest days for me, everyday's running.

0:21:13 > 0:21:14I always want to do too much.

0:21:14 > 0:21:16The coaches are always, like, stopping me,

0:21:16 > 0:21:18making sure I'm not doing too much.

0:21:18 > 0:21:20I just have to stay injury-free, stay focused.

0:21:20 > 0:21:22Just enjoy it.

0:21:22 > 0:21:23I think if I'm enjoying it, if I'm happy,

0:21:23 > 0:21:25if I'm in a good mood, then it's all good.

0:21:27 > 0:21:32For Jessica Ennis-Hill, the best place to be has always been at home.

0:21:32 > 0:21:36Her journey since Super Saturday has been nothing short of eventful,

0:21:36 > 0:21:39and I'm looking forward to hearing her perspective on that time,

0:21:39 > 0:21:42now that she's decided to leave the track behind.

0:21:44 > 0:21:48- So, this is Sheffield, your hometown?- It is, yes.

0:21:48 > 0:21:52Born here, studied here, did all my training here. So, yeah.

0:21:52 > 0:21:54Never thought of leaving?

0:21:54 > 0:21:57No. I mean, there was times when I was contemplating

0:21:57 > 0:21:59where to go to uni,

0:21:59 > 0:22:02but, for me, my set-up was here, my family were here.

0:22:02 > 0:22:05Just having that great support network that you need

0:22:05 > 0:22:07when you're training and competing at that level,

0:22:07 > 0:22:09has been amazing for me.

0:22:10 > 0:22:13When you were a kid growing up here,

0:22:13 > 0:22:18- did you ever think that you would be Olympic champion?- No!

0:22:18 > 0:22:23No, I mean, when I started athletics and learning about championships

0:22:23 > 0:22:27and the Olympics, I always had that dream of wanting to be there

0:22:27 > 0:22:29and standing on the podium.

0:22:29 > 0:22:33But I never, ever imagined that I would have had the journey

0:22:33 > 0:22:37that I've had, sat here in this position, chatting to you.

0:22:37 > 0:22:41You know, with lots of gold medals and an Olympic gold medal

0:22:41 > 0:22:44to my name, is just, yeah, unbelievable, really.

0:22:44 > 0:22:49Standing on top of the Olympic podium is every athlete's dream.

0:22:49 > 0:22:52But the journey to that moment is far from easy.

0:22:52 > 0:22:56I competed at a home games in Atlanta 1996,

0:22:56 > 0:22:58and was the favourite to win my event.

0:22:58 > 0:23:02A pressure that Jess too must have faced.

0:23:02 > 0:23:06Going into 2012, you became the face of the Games.

0:23:08 > 0:23:10Talk about how that affected you,

0:23:10 > 0:23:14or if it affected you at all in the year leading up to the games?

0:23:14 > 0:23:17I think the fact that it was in London, obviously,

0:23:17 > 0:23:20it brought a lot more pressure and expectation.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22I think, for me, the most important thing at that time

0:23:22 > 0:23:24was that I didn't change anything.

0:23:24 > 0:23:28I stayed where I trained for the past however many years.

0:23:28 > 0:23:31I had the same coach, the same family support

0:23:31 > 0:23:34and team that had worked round me.

0:23:34 > 0:23:35And of course I felt pressure,

0:23:35 > 0:23:39and I had moments where I'd go home upset because training hadn't

0:23:39 > 0:23:42gone well, or I'd have doubts about whether I could do it.

0:23:42 > 0:23:45But then, when I was at home, it was my family that were there to

0:23:45 > 0:23:48say, "Look, just calm down a bit."

0:23:48 > 0:23:49Put it into perspective.

0:23:49 > 0:23:54But I do think, gosh, that was a hell of a lot of pressure.

0:23:54 > 0:23:57Biggest cheer of all will be reserved for this lady.

0:23:59 > 0:24:02I was going in as the face of the Olympics.

0:24:02 > 0:24:05I just thought, honestly, can this all come together

0:24:05 > 0:24:06and would I be able to do it?

0:24:08 > 0:24:10What a start for the British star.

0:24:12 > 0:24:17Jess' quest for heptathlon gold began on Friday 3rd August.

0:24:17 > 0:24:20And it would conclude with the 800m final,

0:24:20 > 0:24:23underneath the spotlights of a packed Olympic Stadium.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27The staging was incredible.

0:24:27 > 0:24:29The buzz, you know, all the fans, all the British flags.

0:24:29 > 0:24:32As soon as you mention that moment of walking to that stadium,

0:24:32 > 0:24:33I get goose bumps again.

0:24:33 > 0:24:35It was packed, 75,000 people.

0:24:35 > 0:24:36Just remember thinking,

0:24:36 > 0:24:38"Oh, my God, this is like going to a football match."

0:24:38 > 0:24:41You know, when you go to, like, an FA Cup Final.

0:24:41 > 0:24:45It was just like nothing I'd ever experienced.

0:24:45 > 0:24:48Knowing that everybody in there wanted you to do well,

0:24:48 > 0:24:51and was excited about the prospect of you doing well.

0:24:51 > 0:24:53They had no idea who I was when I walked in,

0:24:53 > 0:24:55they just saw a British jersey.

0:24:55 > 0:24:58He'll have never had a bigger cheer in his life.

0:24:58 > 0:25:01I was looking at the guys who were in the final, and I knew that I'd

0:25:01 > 0:25:04been beating them quite regularly, so I had a great opportunity.

0:25:04 > 0:25:06But what I don't think I was massively prepared for was,

0:25:06 > 0:25:09as I ran down the runway on that round one,

0:25:09 > 0:25:11that's then when, all of a sudden, I noticed the crowd again.

0:25:11 > 0:25:13And that was a problem,

0:25:13 > 0:25:16because I then ended up running through on my first round.

0:25:16 > 0:25:19There'll be some adjustments to be done, I think.

0:25:19 > 0:25:22That morning, I was up about 5am, and the night before,

0:25:22 > 0:25:24I just couldn't switch off.

0:25:24 > 0:25:26Because although I was telling myself there's

0:25:26 > 0:25:29so much more to do, I couldn't help thinking, "Ooh, but I'm so close!"

0:25:32 > 0:25:34I just remember waiting and waiting and waiting.

0:25:34 > 0:25:37And just the nerves building.

0:25:37 > 0:25:43So much expectation on the slender shoulders of Jessica Ennis.

0:25:43 > 0:25:45The way she controlled the pressures that she had, everybody had

0:25:45 > 0:25:48already hung an Olympic gold medal around her neck before she done it.

0:25:48 > 0:25:51And we know how much can go wrong in athletics.

0:25:51 > 0:25:54She dealt with that pressure so incredibly well.

0:25:56 > 0:25:59She's given us a magnificent seven events already.

0:26:01 > 0:26:02And here goes Jess.

0:26:05 > 0:26:08She is going to be the Olympic champion.

0:26:08 > 0:26:10Everybody is on their feet.

0:26:10 > 0:26:15Crossing the line was one of the most amazing moments of my career.

0:26:15 > 0:26:18Jessica Ennis is the Olympic champion!

0:26:18 > 0:26:22She hasn't just won it, she's totally dominated.

0:26:24 > 0:26:26I'm just so... Just shocked.

0:26:26 > 0:26:28I'm just... Everyone who's supported me and...

0:26:28 > 0:26:31Thank everyone here and my family and... I can't...

0:26:34 > 0:26:37Just everyone that's supported me. I'm so happy.

0:26:37 > 0:26:40When she crossed the line, arms aloft,

0:26:40 > 0:26:45the feeling of pride I felt for her for winning was massive.

0:26:45 > 0:26:49And then it switched back to myself and my thought process of,

0:26:49 > 0:26:51I want to feel what she just felt.

0:26:51 > 0:26:56I want to have the crowd going mad for me, because I've won.

0:26:59 > 0:27:01Can he feed off this atmosphere?

0:27:07 > 0:27:08And it's big!

0:27:11 > 0:27:12What has he done?

0:27:14 > 0:27:168.31m!

0:27:16 > 0:27:19That is going to take some beating.

0:27:19 > 0:27:22Could this be the greatest night in British athletics history?

0:27:24 > 0:27:28I went from the 3rd of August, nobody having any idea who I was,

0:27:28 > 0:27:31my name or whatever else, to the 4th of August,

0:27:31 > 0:27:33becoming Olympic champion on a night

0:27:33 > 0:27:36which was truly spectacular in British sport.

0:27:37 > 0:27:42To have an Olympics in your hometown, it's once-in-a-lifetime.

0:27:42 > 0:27:44He's ready.

0:27:44 > 0:27:46I'll never experience the pressure I had in London.

0:27:46 > 0:27:49That was the most pressure ever, in my entire life.

0:27:50 > 0:27:52An Olympic 10,000m final.

0:27:53 > 0:27:56I'd normally start at the back, work my way through.

0:27:56 > 0:27:57As I'm working my way through,

0:27:57 > 0:28:00it's getting louder and louder and louder.

0:28:00 > 0:28:02And I'm thinking, "Concentrate here, concentrate."

0:28:02 > 0:28:06And when I went to the last lap, pfft...

0:28:06 > 0:28:07The stadium was just going nuts.

0:28:09 > 0:28:11- Mo Farah hits the front. - BELL

0:28:11 > 0:28:14A lap to go, the bell rings.

0:28:15 > 0:28:18Is it tolling for a gold medal for Great Britain?

0:28:18 > 0:28:20I had the best seat in the house, when I looked to watch Mo.

0:28:20 > 0:28:22From standing underneath the Olympic flame.

0:28:22 > 0:28:25He was cheering for me on the side of the track.

0:28:25 > 0:28:27"Go, Mo, go, Mo!"

0:28:27 > 0:28:30I remember him cheering for me, and it was amazing.

0:28:30 > 0:28:34Farah into the home straight, just got 100m to go.

0:28:34 > 0:28:35Has he got enough?

0:28:35 > 0:28:36He's kicking again.

0:28:36 > 0:28:38Mo Farah, is going for it!

0:28:38 > 0:28:42It's going to be a glorious, glorious win!

0:28:42 > 0:28:44Mo Farah for Great Britain!

0:28:44 > 0:28:46It's gold!

0:28:48 > 0:28:50You know, you dream of becoming Olympic champion,

0:28:50 > 0:28:52but to do it, it's different.

0:28:52 > 0:28:57And to do it in your hometown, in London, it was amazing.

0:29:00 > 0:29:04I saw Rihanna come on the track. I got really emotional, lifted her up.

0:29:04 > 0:29:07That moment was so beautiful, as a family.

0:29:07 > 0:29:10Three gold medals for Great Britain! What a night!

0:29:10 > 0:29:16That 45-minute window where we had Jess, Greg and then me.

0:29:16 > 0:29:18It was just incredible.

0:29:18 > 0:29:23To be part of a really iconic night of British athletics

0:29:23 > 0:29:27that will be forever remembered was just so incredible.

0:29:35 > 0:29:39Mo Farah's London Olympics didn't end on Super Saturday.

0:29:39 > 0:29:42Immediately after becoming the 10,000m champion,

0:29:42 > 0:29:46his attention turned to his pursuit of the 5,000m gold.

0:29:48 > 0:29:51I wanted to come out and try and win the 5k.

0:29:51 > 0:29:54At that point, I was just having recovered from the 10k,

0:29:54 > 0:29:57rest up, just get ready, not get distracted.

0:29:57 > 0:29:58And at one point, yeah,

0:29:58 > 0:30:01I was getting a little bit distracted, but, you know.

0:30:01 > 0:30:04Then I ran the heat three days later and I felt a bit tired.

0:30:04 > 0:30:06I'm like, "Man, I'm moving around too much.

0:30:06 > 0:30:08"I can't be doing what I'm doing, I need to just focus."

0:30:08 > 0:30:11And that's what I did, I went back to the village,

0:30:11 > 0:30:15just someone was bringing up my food for me, just go training.

0:30:15 > 0:30:17And then come back and I'll stay in my room.

0:30:17 > 0:30:23Well, settle down for what should be an enthralling 15 minutes or so.

0:30:23 > 0:30:25I had nothing to lose. I didn't feel the pressure,

0:30:25 > 0:30:29it was just a matter of seeing what I can do, can I make history?

0:30:29 > 0:30:31What can I do?

0:30:31 > 0:30:35Farah, holding the inside curve. That'll be a help.

0:30:35 > 0:30:38The crowd are on their feet, they're trying to roar him home.

0:30:38 > 0:30:42The arms have got to pump, the knees have got to come up high.

0:30:42 > 0:30:44He's got to find something extra, he's got to kick hard.

0:30:44 > 0:30:46Come on, Mo Farah!

0:30:46 > 0:30:49Gerbemeskel is coming, but I think he's going to get there.

0:30:49 > 0:30:54Farah is going to make it two gold medals for Great Britain. Beautiful!

0:30:56 > 0:30:59The place erupts!

0:30:59 > 0:31:02He's a double Olympic champion.

0:31:02 > 0:31:05But there were more memorable moments to come for Mo and his family.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08Just two weeks after the Olympics were over,

0:31:08 > 0:31:11his wife Tania gave birth to twin girls.

0:31:11 > 0:31:16Going into the race, my wife Tania was heavily pregnant with the twins.

0:31:16 > 0:31:19Tania never told me this, but she spoke to my agent and said,

0:31:19 > 0:31:22"Well, if the babies come, we can't tell Mo, because he's been waiting

0:31:22 > 0:31:26"for this moment and we don't want to disturb him or cause a problem."

0:31:26 > 0:31:29So what they agreed was, if the babies did come, they weren't going

0:31:29 > 0:31:33to let me know, she was just going to take care of it.

0:31:33 > 0:31:35You know, that's what my wife would do for me.

0:31:35 > 0:31:38I'm just grateful to have a wonderful woman in my life.

0:31:39 > 0:31:42Average, I'm spending six months of the year away from my family

0:31:42 > 0:31:45and not being able to see my family in terms of racing, training camp.

0:31:45 > 0:31:50Which is difficult, but if you want to be champion, if I want to

0:31:50 > 0:31:54stay on top, that's what it takes to be able to compete with these guys.

0:31:54 > 0:31:56- TANIA:- We all make sacrifices, that's what you do in family.

0:31:56 > 0:32:00If we're honest about it, he wouldn't be able to run

0:32:00 > 0:32:03and do what he does without me taking care of things

0:32:03 > 0:32:06and keeping strong and just keeping things running smoothly.

0:32:09 > 0:32:12Generally, I do miss my family and my kids

0:32:12 > 0:32:15and not being able to see my family sometimes hurts me.

0:32:15 > 0:32:16But I know I'm doing it for them.

0:32:16 > 0:32:20I know Rihanna, my oldest daughter, she's almost 12 now,

0:32:20 > 0:32:22she understands what I need to do.

0:32:22 > 0:32:26And the twins understand a bit more now. They're going to be five soon.

0:32:26 > 0:32:30And my son, he doesn't what's going on. He's like, "Daddy, daddy?"

0:32:31 > 0:32:34It's a shock for them, because I've been away so long,

0:32:34 > 0:32:36you go to the house, and they don't know what to do.

0:32:36 > 0:32:38They're like...

0:32:38 > 0:32:40And then it takes them like two-three weeks to be able

0:32:40 > 0:32:42to get comfortable with you.

0:32:42 > 0:32:44And then you leave again. And that's hard.

0:32:51 > 0:32:56A year on from Super Saturday, the 2013 World Championships would be

0:32:56 > 0:33:00an opportunity for Mo to continue his global domination on the track.

0:33:00 > 0:33:05Over the past 34 years, these championships have seen

0:33:05 > 0:33:07some of the greatest moments in athletics history.

0:33:07 > 0:33:10Oh, he really went for that one, that's huge!

0:33:11 > 0:33:15Just like the Olympics, they're a stage every athlete dreams of

0:33:15 > 0:33:18and values as a place to compete against the best in the world.

0:33:18 > 0:33:21He's done it again!

0:33:21 > 0:33:24A new world record for Usain Bolt!

0:33:24 > 0:33:29Held every two years, they either lead into or follow an Olympics.

0:33:30 > 0:33:34During my own career, I was always passionate about defending

0:33:34 > 0:33:36my World Championship titles.

0:33:36 > 0:33:39Michael Johnson, storming away to another gold medal.

0:33:39 > 0:33:41The world record beckons, and it's gone!

0:33:45 > 0:33:48If Mo could add the world 10,000m and 5,000m titles

0:33:48 > 0:33:53to his Olympic golds, he could achieve an historic double-double.

0:33:53 > 0:33:55In the build-up to Moscow, I had the greatest speed,

0:33:55 > 0:33:57I was in great shape.

0:33:57 > 0:33:59Probably one of the best shapes of my life, in 2013.

0:33:59 > 0:34:02Looking back at my diary and thinking,

0:34:02 > 0:34:04I did this key session, did that session,

0:34:04 > 0:34:08and that's the time when I broke the 1,500m British record.

0:34:08 > 0:34:11And Farah's going to run a superb fast time.

0:34:11 > 0:34:14And Kiprop crosses in 28th,

0:34:14 > 0:34:19and Mo Farah may well have just have broken my British record for 1,500m.

0:34:19 > 0:34:21Neil, for a 5,000m runner to come

0:34:21 > 0:34:25and run like that is absolutely unbelievable.

0:34:25 > 0:34:28The fact that he's internationally competitive,

0:34:28 > 0:34:31definitely, at everything from 1,500 to marathon,

0:34:31 > 0:34:35that's a pretty unique spread of events.

0:34:35 > 0:34:37All of the preparations behind them.

0:34:38 > 0:34:41Ahead, 25 laps of the World Championship 10,000m.

0:34:43 > 0:34:45I had the hunger and I had the drive,

0:34:45 > 0:34:48and I still had the great memories from London 2012.

0:34:48 > 0:34:49So, for me, it was like,

0:34:49 > 0:34:51I don't want people to think this was just a fluke.

0:34:51 > 0:34:53Let's see what I can do.

0:34:53 > 0:34:54Mo Farah, digging deep.

0:34:54 > 0:34:56He's got Jeilan right there.

0:34:56 > 0:34:58And here's the last bit of acceleration.

0:34:58 > 0:35:00And Mo Farah starts to go away.

0:35:00 > 0:35:04It's still not won. Jeilan is still there, and Jeilan comes again.

0:35:04 > 0:35:05But Farah's going to get there!

0:35:05 > 0:35:11This as well domination for Farah, he is the world champion!

0:35:11 > 0:35:13When you win championships and you win another championship,

0:35:13 > 0:35:16it gives you a massive boost and massive confidence.

0:35:16 > 0:35:19You feel like, you know, you could do it. Which sometimes is...

0:35:19 > 0:35:23It gets difficult, because most people know what you do,

0:35:23 > 0:35:26you've got a target on your back. But, for me, it gives me confidence.

0:35:26 > 0:35:29I feel like I've been in this situation before.

0:35:29 > 0:35:31I can take care of it.

0:35:31 > 0:35:33Men's 5,000m final.

0:35:33 > 0:35:36You've got an endurance engine, and you do all the boring stuff, and

0:35:36 > 0:35:41you really create that platform that you then put the winning stuff on.

0:35:41 > 0:35:43And the winning stuff is what he can do

0:35:43 > 0:35:45over the last 600m, the last 400m.

0:35:45 > 0:35:47He's running against very talented Ethiopians,

0:35:47 > 0:35:49very talented Kenyans and others.

0:35:49 > 0:35:52However, they're not paying the same attention to detail that

0:35:52 > 0:35:55Mo Farah has done for the last six or seven years.

0:35:56 > 0:35:59Have any of them got the ammunition?

0:35:59 > 0:36:00Mo Farah, working hard!

0:36:00 > 0:36:03He hasn't got this one yet, he's got a battle for this.

0:36:03 > 0:36:07He's sprinting for gold, he's running for greatness!

0:36:07 > 0:36:10Mo Farah is going to get there again!

0:36:10 > 0:36:11Farah wins it!

0:36:15 > 0:36:18Another incredible performance from Mo Farah.

0:36:22 > 0:36:26For Greg Rutherford, that winning jump on Super Saturday was

0:36:26 > 0:36:29the beginning of a whole new chapter.

0:36:29 > 0:36:34After London, describe the change in your life.

0:36:34 > 0:36:36Everything changed.

0:36:36 > 0:36:39Now you've got people wanting you to appear at this thing

0:36:39 > 0:36:42and talk about it. People wanting you on their TV show,

0:36:42 > 0:36:44people want you to come and do all the other things.

0:36:44 > 0:36:46People stopping me on the street.

0:36:46 > 0:36:48I went from nobody to papers writing all different stories.

0:36:48 > 0:36:50I remember I hugged...

0:36:50 > 0:36:54I did a TV show, hugged some pop star from the UK,

0:36:54 > 0:36:57and all of a sudden, I was the front page of a newspaper saying,

0:36:57 > 0:36:59look who so-and-so's now dating.

0:36:59 > 0:37:03And it was like... These things were completely alien to me.

0:37:03 > 0:37:07So if you look back to Super Saturday.

0:37:07 > 0:37:09Jess, Mo, you,

0:37:09 > 0:37:12all three of you guys, fantastic performances.

0:37:12 > 0:37:16Did you ever look at them or reach out to one of them and say,

0:37:16 > 0:37:20"How's it going for you? Because I'm having a hard time with this."

0:37:20 > 0:37:21No, and do you know what?

0:37:21 > 0:37:25I think, for me, probably because I always saw Jess and Mo

0:37:25 > 0:37:29as superstars, really, I probably...

0:37:29 > 0:37:31No, I didn't.

0:37:31 > 0:37:34I think for me, I see myself as different.

0:37:34 > 0:37:38And still probably never quite them, if that makes sense.

0:37:38 > 0:37:40They are two of the greatest ever in British history.

0:37:40 > 0:37:45And I've never been able to put myself with those guys.

0:37:46 > 0:37:48A year on from his victory in London,

0:37:48 > 0:37:53the 2013 World Championships in Moscow offered Greg the chance to

0:37:53 > 0:37:56prove that his London gold was more than just a one-off.

0:37:57 > 0:38:01But despite his best efforts, he went out of that competition

0:38:01 > 0:38:04in the early stages, failing to qualify for the final.

0:38:05 > 0:38:07I made a very bad decision in 2013,

0:38:07 > 0:38:09I should not have gone to the World Championships.

0:38:09 > 0:38:12I had a ruptured hamstring, couldn't run fast,

0:38:12 > 0:38:14couldn't really jump very far.

0:38:14 > 0:38:18But I just hoped and believed that I could do something.

0:38:18 > 0:38:20And possibly, yeah, to prove people wrong.

0:38:20 > 0:38:24And I ignored the fact that I was in no shape to do so at all.

0:38:24 > 0:38:28And I wish so much I never did it, really do.

0:38:29 > 0:38:33Greg's 2013 season was undoubtedly a steep learning curve.

0:38:33 > 0:38:34The following year,

0:38:34 > 0:38:38he returned to the coach who'd led him to victory in London,

0:38:38 > 0:38:43and ended the 2014 season as Commonwealth and European champion.

0:38:43 > 0:38:47After winning two Majors, my focus changed to the fact that,

0:38:47 > 0:38:49could I win a World Championships?

0:38:49 > 0:38:52I've always believed it, but things go wrong in my career, generally.

0:38:52 > 0:38:53That's what seems to happen.

0:38:53 > 0:38:57Winning two Majors made me realise that, yeah, you can

0:38:57 > 0:38:58still do it, and let's go.

0:38:58 > 0:39:02My focus became, let's get a world title.

0:39:09 > 0:39:10So this is where it all goes down?

0:39:10 > 0:39:13- Or used to go down! - Used to go down, yeah.

0:39:13 > 0:39:16So this is where I'd come every day, pretty much.

0:39:16 > 0:39:18Spent a lot of my life here.

0:39:18 > 0:39:22- Who's that?- Yeah, so when Reggie comes down, he's like, "Mummy!"

0:39:25 > 0:39:27They have lots of sports days on, which is nice.

0:39:27 > 0:39:29- Lots of kids about.- Yep.

0:39:29 > 0:39:31So, were you competing when you were their age?

0:39:31 > 0:39:34- What were you doing? - I was probably like this big.

0:39:34 > 0:39:38- But, yeah, just started when I was ten, so a little bit older.- Yeah.

0:39:41 > 0:39:44So these are some of the girls that train with Toni now.

0:39:45 > 0:39:48But again, the group's changed, and everyone's so young now.

0:39:48 > 0:39:51So it's all different.

0:39:51 > 0:39:54- Hello.- Hey!- How's it going? - Have you brought your kit?

0:39:54 > 0:39:56- No kit today.- It's good to see you.

0:39:56 > 0:39:57Michael!

0:39:59 > 0:40:01I've missed you, I've really missed you.

0:40:01 > 0:40:04- Of course. I didn't bring my kit either.- Yeah...- Hello!

0:40:07 > 0:40:09How long did you guys work together?

0:40:09 > 0:40:12- 18 years.- 18 years.- 18 years.

0:40:12 > 0:40:16- Do I have to call you Dame now? - Yes, please.- OK.

0:40:16 > 0:40:18- Thank you. - SHE LAUGHS

0:40:20 > 0:40:24Toni Minichiello has worked as Jess' coach throughout her whole career.

0:40:24 > 0:40:27Guiding her progress from promising schoolkid sprinter

0:40:27 > 0:40:29to multi-event champion.

0:40:31 > 0:40:33Did you suggest heptathlon?

0:40:33 > 0:40:34You know what, we thought...

0:40:34 > 0:40:36She wanted to be a sprinter, she hated throwing,

0:40:36 > 0:40:38didn't like sand, didn't want to do those things.

0:40:38 > 0:40:41- "I'll never be good at them!" - Didn't like the 800.

0:40:41 > 0:40:44It was definitely you that suggested heptathlon,

0:40:44 > 0:40:47because I didn't really know what it was.

0:40:47 > 0:40:50And then, slowly, you started introducing the events.

0:40:50 > 0:40:53It was seven events over two days, and it's just hard,

0:40:53 > 0:40:55that's such hard work.

0:40:55 > 0:40:59When Toni suggested heptathlon, you didn't know what it was.

0:41:01 > 0:41:03I'm assuming you explained it.

0:41:03 > 0:41:05What was your initial thought?

0:41:05 > 0:41:08I thought, "How hard can it be? Let's give it a go."

0:41:08 > 0:41:11- Toni said there's an 800 at the end?- Yeah!

0:41:11 > 0:41:13And they're, like, back-to-back.

0:41:13 > 0:41:16And then, obviously, I tried the event and, yeah,

0:41:16 > 0:41:19it took a long time for me to love it, because I think you enjoy

0:41:19 > 0:41:22things that you're good at and that you're successful with.

0:41:22 > 0:41:25And I wasn't successful at most of the events,

0:41:25 > 0:41:27and I couldn't throw particularly well.

0:41:27 > 0:41:29And I struggled with the 800.

0:41:29 > 0:41:32And I couldn't see how it was all going to come together.

0:41:32 > 0:41:35I'm kind of the person that will stick with something anyway

0:41:35 > 0:41:36and want to see it through.

0:41:36 > 0:41:40And there's almost that feeling of, I don't want to quit it.

0:41:40 > 0:41:44I don't want to be a quitter with it. And, obviously, Toni saw...

0:41:44 > 0:41:45You know, from that early age,

0:41:45 > 0:41:48he saw that I had potential within the event.

0:41:48 > 0:41:51And I suppose I just had to trust him and know that, eventually,

0:41:51 > 0:41:54it would come right a few years down the line.

0:41:54 > 0:41:57Jess is expecting her second child.

0:41:57 > 0:42:01Her first, Reggie, was born two years after Super Saturday.

0:42:01 > 0:42:04Having won gold in London and facing the prospect of becoming

0:42:04 > 0:42:08a parent for the first time, many would have decided to call it a day.

0:42:10 > 0:42:13When I was pregnant with Reggie, I always had in my mind that

0:42:13 > 0:42:14I wanted to come back.

0:42:14 > 0:42:16I definitely wanted to come back.

0:42:16 > 0:42:19I didn't believe you, you know that? I didn't believe you one bit!

0:42:19 > 0:42:21I don't think a lot of people... I don't think you believed me.

0:42:21 > 0:42:23I think there was that feeling, even amongst the team,

0:42:23 > 0:42:26and we were all really close, everyone was like,

0:42:26 > 0:42:29"OK, if that's what you say you're doing, we'll see," sort of thing.

0:42:29 > 0:42:33But I just knew that I wanted to do it. I knew it was going to be hard.

0:42:33 > 0:42:37As any first-time parent, you do not have an idea of what

0:42:37 > 0:42:40life is going to be like once your first child comes along.

0:42:40 > 0:42:42And it was a huge shock for me.

0:42:42 > 0:42:45You know, all the changes, positively and negatively.

0:42:45 > 0:42:46That's why we didn't believe you.

0:42:46 > 0:42:48We were like, "Wait until she finds out."

0:42:48 > 0:42:50Yeah, and I can understand that.

0:42:50 > 0:42:52But I still had that drive

0:42:52 > 0:42:57and I still felt that I had a little bit left to achieve in the sport.

0:42:57 > 0:43:02Having a son and now having to balance life a little bit more,

0:43:02 > 0:43:05how did that change your life?

0:43:05 > 0:43:07I think, in my mind, I just felt that

0:43:07 > 0:43:10I was going to step back in and it might take me a few weeks to

0:43:10 > 0:43:13get back to where I was, but I was still going to be the same athlete.

0:43:13 > 0:43:16And actually, when I got back into training and I went to do

0:43:16 > 0:43:19hill runs with the group, I was at the back of the group.

0:43:19 > 0:43:23I was struggling to make reps. I was tired, I was upset.

0:43:23 > 0:43:26It was just one of the most challenging things I've ever done.

0:43:26 > 0:43:29But then there was that niggling thought at the back of my mind

0:43:29 > 0:43:31that said, "You want to do it,

0:43:31 > 0:43:34"you want to get back to full, elite competition."

0:43:34 > 0:43:37Why? I mean, why would you want to get back out there at this point?

0:43:37 > 0:43:42You've got a beautiful son, you're Olympic champion.

0:43:42 > 0:43:44My huge motivator was Reggie,

0:43:44 > 0:43:48because, you know, I wanted him to just be a part of that last,

0:43:48 > 0:43:52unique journey that I'd been on for all those years.

0:43:52 > 0:43:54That not many people get to experience,

0:43:54 > 0:43:57and I want him to look back and see what I'd achieved,

0:43:57 > 0:44:00and that I'd achieved it with him.

0:44:00 > 0:44:02And, again, it was just a massive challenge.

0:44:02 > 0:44:05I love a challenge, and coming back, after having him,

0:44:05 > 0:44:07was the biggest challenge I could ever set myself.

0:44:09 > 0:44:12The 2015 World Athletics Championships in Beijing

0:44:12 > 0:44:16took place just one year after the birth of Jess' son Reggie.

0:44:18 > 0:44:21No heptathlete had ever come back from childbirth to win

0:44:21 > 0:44:23a World Championships title.

0:44:23 > 0:44:27I knew I was in a better position than I was a few months ago,

0:44:27 > 0:44:32but I still knew that I wasn't where I was a couple of years ago.

0:44:32 > 0:44:35Her presence, the fact that she made the decision and she turned up

0:44:35 > 0:44:38and was just there - regardless of the shape she'd have been in -

0:44:38 > 0:44:42applies pressure to the other athletes, because they're going,

0:44:42 > 0:44:45"That's Jess, Olympic champion, and she's turned up."

0:44:45 > 0:44:46That's a big jump.

0:44:48 > 0:44:526.43, it's a season's best for Jess Ennis-Hill.

0:44:52 > 0:44:55I just kept thinking, just don't make any major mistakes

0:44:55 > 0:44:58and let the other girls make mistakes around you.

0:44:58 > 0:45:01Just keep doing these solid performances that aren't anything

0:45:01 > 0:45:03amazing or spectacular, but they're just solid.

0:45:03 > 0:45:06And if I can keep doing that throughout all the events,

0:45:06 > 0:45:10then maybe I could be in with a chance of medalling,

0:45:10 > 0:45:13and then it became a gold medal.

0:45:13 > 0:45:18Jessica Ennis-Hill is back on top of the world!

0:45:18 > 0:45:21Storybook athletics.

0:45:21 > 0:45:24Definitely one of my proudest moments.

0:45:24 > 0:45:27Because, I mean, only myself and my family

0:45:27 > 0:45:31and people that are closest to me saw how emotionally stressful

0:45:31 > 0:45:34it was to get back into training.

0:45:34 > 0:45:37Very tired and missing my son.

0:45:37 > 0:45:43And for it all to come together and win, it was just really unexpected.

0:45:49 > 0:45:53As reigning Olympic and world champion, Beijing offered Mo

0:45:53 > 0:45:56another opportunity to continue his winning streak.

0:45:57 > 0:46:00But he had endured a turbulent summer.

0:46:00 > 0:46:03Preparations disrupted by doping accusations

0:46:03 > 0:46:06aimed at his coach, Alberto Salazar.

0:46:06 > 0:46:09I spoke to Alberto last night, and I said to him,

0:46:09 > 0:46:11"Alberto, what's going on?"

0:46:11 > 0:46:13I said to him, "I need some answers."

0:46:13 > 0:46:15He goes, "Mo, I can prove this to you.

0:46:15 > 0:46:19"These are just allegations, I'll show you some evidence."

0:46:19 > 0:46:22I'm really angry at this situation.

0:46:22 > 0:46:24It's not fair, it's not right.

0:46:24 > 0:46:26I haven't done anything,

0:46:26 > 0:46:29but my name's getting dragged through the mud.

0:46:29 > 0:46:32I'm a clean athlete, I'm against drugs, 100%.

0:46:32 > 0:46:34And I believe that anyone caught with drugs

0:46:34 > 0:46:36should be banned for life.

0:46:38 > 0:46:4010,000m final.

0:46:40 > 0:46:42Mo Farah, away he goes.

0:46:42 > 0:46:43Going into a championships,

0:46:43 > 0:46:46you want to be able to know that you're in the best shape you can be.

0:46:46 > 0:46:50And, you know, if they throw something at you, you can cover it.

0:46:50 > 0:46:53Mo Farah, on the track, is a smart guy.

0:46:53 > 0:46:55He controls races.

0:46:55 > 0:46:57500m to go.

0:46:57 > 0:47:00Mo Farah moves to the front for the first time.

0:47:00 > 0:47:02He knows that,

0:47:02 > 0:47:06"If I do what I have to do, they'll all fall into place.

0:47:06 > 0:47:08"They'll do what I think they're going to do,

0:47:08 > 0:47:11"and what they think they're going to do, and I'll win."

0:47:11 > 0:47:14Farah looking both left and right, he sees danger.

0:47:14 > 0:47:15The Kenyans are both there.

0:47:15 > 0:47:16He's striking for home now.

0:47:16 > 0:47:20They've thrown everything on him, they've gone hard, they've gone

0:47:20 > 0:47:24very hard, but it's not hard enough, because they're not good enough.

0:47:24 > 0:47:27They're not fast enough. Mo Farah is the world champion again.

0:47:33 > 0:47:37During the heat in the 5,000m, I slightly twitched my hamstring,

0:47:37 > 0:47:41I nearly went down. So my hamstring was a bit sore.

0:47:41 > 0:47:44And I could feel it in the final.

0:47:44 > 0:47:48I had to just smoothly stride it out.

0:47:52 > 0:47:53And look at Ndiku, he goes,

0:47:53 > 0:47:56"No, I know you want to be at the front, I'm not letting you."

0:47:56 > 0:47:58So this has got to be different from Mo Farah.

0:47:58 > 0:48:00One effort by Mo Farah to try and get into the lead,

0:48:00 > 0:48:02it wasn't enough.

0:48:02 > 0:48:03He's now got to gather himself.

0:48:03 > 0:48:06He is being tested a little here.

0:48:06 > 0:48:08Has he got the legs, has he got the strength?

0:48:08 > 0:48:09Can he take Farah on?

0:48:09 > 0:48:12The gold medal, surely between these two.

0:48:12 > 0:48:13Ndiku, the tall Kenyan.

0:48:13 > 0:48:16Mo Farah striking for gold again!

0:48:16 > 0:48:19He takes one look, they've got nothing for him!

0:48:19 > 0:48:22Mo Farah, streaking away!

0:48:22 > 0:48:24Gold again!

0:48:25 > 0:48:27Just has too much. He is just too good.

0:48:31 > 0:48:34Injury had denied Greg Rutherford any chance

0:48:34 > 0:48:37at the 2013 World Championships.

0:48:37 > 0:48:40But he arrived in Beijing in good shape as the reigning

0:48:40 > 0:48:43Olympic, Commonwealth and European champion.

0:48:44 > 0:48:48I went in very similar to how I went into the Olympics in 2012.

0:48:48 > 0:48:51I thought it was my competition to lose, even though

0:48:51 > 0:48:53there were some exceptional jumpers there.

0:48:53 > 0:48:55These were guys who were jumping bigger than me,

0:48:55 > 0:48:58but I still believed, on the day, I would win it.

0:49:00 > 0:49:03He's out in front, here at the World Championships.

0:49:03 > 0:49:068.29 is his lead. He's looking to extend it...

0:49:07 > 0:49:09Oh, that's big!

0:49:09 > 0:49:11That's a huge jump!

0:49:11 > 0:49:138.41.

0:49:13 > 0:49:15Come on!

0:49:15 > 0:49:19Rutherford completes his Grand Slam.

0:49:19 > 0:49:24Olympic, European, Commonwealth and now world champion.

0:49:25 > 0:49:28I'm hoping 8.41 is acceptable for people this time.

0:49:28 > 0:49:31I think, last time, I wasn't jumping far enough for people.

0:49:31 > 0:49:34But I'm pretty sure that's actually a stadium record here, so I'll take that.

0:49:34 > 0:49:37That's not too bad. Maybe I'm not too bad a long jumper.

0:49:46 > 0:49:49My motivation has always been winning.

0:49:49 > 0:49:51And that stems from being a kid.

0:49:51 > 0:49:53I think, often, everyone always told me it would never be me,

0:49:53 > 0:49:56I was never going to be the good athlete, the good sportsperson,

0:49:56 > 0:49:57somebody else would do it.

0:49:57 > 0:50:00And I was always determined to prove people wrong.

0:50:00 > 0:50:03My entire athletic career has basically been me

0:50:03 > 0:50:06belligerently winning to prove everybody else that doubted

0:50:06 > 0:50:08that I do have the ability to do it.

0:50:10 > 0:50:14What is it about Greg that sets him apart as a jumper from anyone else?

0:50:14 > 0:50:15It's his speed.

0:50:15 > 0:50:19He's the fastest long jumper going right now, probably.

0:50:19 > 0:50:21He's the only one in the world right now

0:50:21 > 0:50:23that's hit 11.6m/s on the runway.

0:50:23 > 0:50:26Once you hit the board, he's probably not the best or most

0:50:26 > 0:50:29efficient in the air, but his run up is really, really good.

0:50:29 > 0:50:37As a competitor, he just seems to be able to thrive under pressure,

0:50:37 > 0:50:40like few athletes can. Where does that come from?

0:50:40 > 0:50:42I think you'll know better than most, right?

0:50:42 > 0:50:46The best athletes are the ones that really perform when it really counts, right?

0:50:46 > 0:50:49So Greg, on the lower competitions, where it's really not that important,

0:50:49 > 0:50:50he doesn't really bring himself up,

0:50:50 > 0:50:53and he doesn't really perform as well as he does.

0:50:53 > 0:50:59But that arousal level that's there within a World Championships

0:50:59 > 0:51:02or an Olympic Games, that's what really brings Greg to the fore.

0:51:02 > 0:51:06I just think that he requires this higher level of pressure to

0:51:06 > 0:51:09actually dig in to what's really available to him.

0:51:13 > 0:51:15Ah, no, you're hiding!

0:51:15 > 0:51:17Aw!

0:51:17 > 0:51:19Do I not get a cuddle?

0:51:19 > 0:51:23From where I sit, I kind of look at the old Greg, new Greg.

0:51:23 > 0:51:26- I see a little bit of a difference. - Right.

0:51:26 > 0:51:29Has it changed him from what you've seen?

0:51:29 > 0:51:35I think fatherhood has maybe taught him to let go if he's not

0:51:35 > 0:51:39having a great time training, or if things aren't going right.

0:51:39 > 0:51:44Fatherhood for him is so much more important than a career.

0:51:44 > 0:51:48So I think it helps him unwind and see the bigger picture.

0:51:48 > 0:51:50But he's no different to how I expected him to be.

0:51:50 > 0:51:53I thought he'd throw himself headfirst into it,

0:51:53 > 0:51:54and he certainly has.

0:51:54 > 0:51:57You're being silly, aren't you? You're being silly.

0:52:01 > 0:52:04The next opportunity for Jess, Mo and Greg to compete

0:52:04 > 0:52:10against the best in the world would be the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

0:52:10 > 0:52:13Jess and her team hoped that she could continue to build on her

0:52:13 > 0:52:16unexpected World Championship gold.

0:52:16 > 0:52:20But with seven events to compete in, defending her Olympic

0:52:20 > 0:52:24title would depend on being able to train as effectively as possible.

0:52:24 > 0:52:27That year was just so up-and-down.

0:52:27 > 0:52:30I just keep picking up Achilles injuries all the time.

0:52:30 > 0:52:32So I'd have my left Achilles, problems with that,

0:52:32 > 0:52:35where it'd be weeks off training.

0:52:35 > 0:52:37And then the other Achilles would start hurting,

0:52:37 > 0:52:39and it was just back and forth.

0:52:39 > 0:52:41I mean, I remember making a phone call,

0:52:41 > 0:52:45and it was after the second injury, when I rang up Neil Black,

0:52:45 > 0:52:48who's performance director, and went, "Can Jess go to the Olympics

0:52:48 > 0:52:50"without having done and heptathlon this year?"

0:52:50 > 0:52:53And he just went quiet on the other end of the phone.

0:52:53 > 0:52:57He was like, "Erm... I just need to check."

0:52:57 > 0:52:59"OK, speak to you later."

0:52:59 > 0:53:02Despite her various setbacks,

0:53:02 > 0:53:05Jess found form just in time to travel to Rio.

0:53:05 > 0:53:08The challenge ahead of her was significant.

0:53:08 > 0:53:12No British woman had ever retained an Olympic track and field title.

0:53:13 > 0:53:16I obviously wanted to do well and I put pressure on myself.

0:53:16 > 0:53:20But, at the same time, anything that year was a huge bonus.

0:53:20 > 0:53:22And having won the World Championships the year before,

0:53:22 > 0:53:27unexpectedly, everything was just a massive bonus after that.

0:53:27 > 0:53:30That is a very, very good start, and suddenly there is the smile.

0:53:30 > 0:53:33And the tension just leaves a little bit.

0:53:33 > 0:53:36Did you expect that the competition

0:53:36 > 0:53:39would be a little bit stiffer in 2016?

0:53:39 > 0:53:43Yeah, after 2015, I knew that the year after, it's an Olympic year

0:53:43 > 0:53:45and everybody raises their game.

0:53:45 > 0:53:49And I was getting a little bit older and having injuries and niggles.

0:53:49 > 0:53:53But the rest of the world, there was young athletes coming through

0:53:53 > 0:53:56and performing really well.

0:53:56 > 0:54:00That is a really impressive jump.

0:54:00 > 0:54:03If you look at Nafi Thiam, she was having good performances.

0:54:03 > 0:54:07The 1.98 in the high jump, she'd done really well in the hurdles.

0:54:07 > 0:54:10She was accumulating points.

0:54:10 > 0:54:12But, for Jess, she'd lost points in the shot,

0:54:12 > 0:54:14she'd lost points in the long jump.

0:54:14 > 0:54:17Ah, the face tells a story.

0:54:17 > 0:54:21Going into the 800m, we knew it was going to be incredibly difficult.

0:54:21 > 0:54:24I needed to beat Thiam by nine seconds.

0:54:24 > 0:54:27It was always going to be a really tough challenge.

0:54:29 > 0:54:32All credit to the girl, she ran her heart out.

0:54:32 > 0:54:35Jess Ennis is doing everything she can.

0:54:35 > 0:54:36She can only win this last event,

0:54:36 > 0:54:40and then there will be an anxious wait, looking back to Thiam.

0:54:40 > 0:54:42Jess Ennis, coming down the home straight,

0:54:42 > 0:54:47and now the clock is ticking, and Thiam is going to become

0:54:47 > 0:54:50the Olympic champion by a couple of seconds.

0:54:51 > 0:54:53It's the smallest winning margin, really,

0:54:53 > 0:54:56in modern heptathlon history.

0:54:56 > 0:54:59So, Nafi Thiam is the Olympic champion.

0:54:59 > 0:55:02Jess Ennis-Hill, the silver medal this time.

0:55:02 > 0:55:05You know, a few people said, "Did you feel disappointed?"

0:55:05 > 0:55:06Particularly in interviews after.

0:55:06 > 0:55:09"Oh, sorry you didn't get the gold, are you disappointed?"

0:55:09 > 0:55:12And there was no feeling of being disappointed at all.

0:55:12 > 0:55:15It was just a feeling of, "I've got here through the year

0:55:15 > 0:55:18"that I've had and the challenges that I've had."

0:55:18 > 0:55:22I just knew that I had done what I had set out to achieve in my career,

0:55:22 > 0:55:25and that I was happy, that I was content.

0:55:25 > 0:55:29That I wasn't going to walk away and feel disappointed or think,

0:55:29 > 0:55:32"I wish I'd pushed on a little bit longer.

0:55:33 > 0:55:38From experience, I know how hard it is to retain an Olympic title.

0:55:38 > 0:55:41And perhaps toughest of all is being in perfect condition

0:55:41 > 0:55:43when it really counts.

0:55:43 > 0:55:46The unique challenges of the long jump meant that once again,

0:55:46 > 0:55:49Greg was unlucky with injury.

0:55:49 > 0:55:50I'm defending Olympic champion,

0:55:50 > 0:55:54so a lot of people are looking at me to win this medal still.

0:55:54 > 0:55:59And then my body decided 2016 was the year of illness and injury.

0:55:59 > 0:56:02As an athlete flies through the air and they go in to land,

0:56:02 > 0:56:05there's a lot of forces when you hit the sand.

0:56:05 > 0:56:07And if you watch the head and whatnot,

0:56:07 > 0:56:09they actually go through a whiplash-type movement.

0:56:09 > 0:56:12And he caught a really bad landing in some bad sand,

0:56:12 > 0:56:14the pit hadn't been managed real well.

0:56:14 > 0:56:16And it was an extreme whiplash injury.

0:56:16 > 0:56:18He lost hearing, he had vertigo,

0:56:18 > 0:56:21couldn't get out of bed for days on end.

0:56:21 > 0:56:24And then that triggered other reactions in the spine.

0:56:24 > 0:56:26And we were just against the clock.

0:56:26 > 0:56:29We were making progress, but we just ran out of time.

0:56:31 > 0:56:33Obviously, I decided to go.

0:56:33 > 0:56:35Things didn't pan out at all in the final for me.

0:56:35 > 0:56:38It just seemed to be everything went wrong.

0:56:38 > 0:56:41I was probably about two thirds of the way through my warm up,

0:56:41 > 0:56:44did one of my drills, and all of a sudden

0:56:44 > 0:56:47just felt the sharp pain again in my groin.

0:56:47 > 0:56:48Probably in that moment,

0:56:48 > 0:56:53I realised my opportunity of winning was diminishing very, very quickly.

0:56:55 > 0:56:56Ooh, I don't like the look of that.

0:56:56 > 0:57:00That's a jump that won't improve his position.

0:57:00 > 0:57:01He's in fourth place.

0:57:01 > 0:57:03I wasn't in a medal position.

0:57:03 > 0:57:05I was in a position I hadn't experienced in a very long time,

0:57:05 > 0:57:09and I had to muster every ounce of energy

0:57:09 > 0:57:13and pretty much beg my body to let me have one more jump.

0:57:20 > 0:57:23Ooh, it's bang on it!

0:57:23 > 0:57:25Oh, he's done it! Has he'd done it?

0:57:25 > 0:57:27Oh, it's a white flag!

0:57:30 > 0:57:32Oh, my word, what is it?

0:57:32 > 0:57:34It's 8.29.

0:57:34 > 0:57:36It does take him into the medals.

0:57:38 > 0:57:41I don't make any excuses for finishing third at all.

0:57:41 > 0:57:43The guys who beat me were better than me on the day,

0:57:43 > 0:57:44and that's a fact of life.

0:57:46 > 0:57:50I just wish so much I could've gone into that 100% fit.

0:57:50 > 0:57:52Without any of the problems that I'd had going into it.

0:57:52 > 0:57:54So I could have done myself justice,

0:57:54 > 0:57:57because I feel it was a missed opportunity for me.

0:57:57 > 0:58:01I really think Rio was maybe one of his greatest meets ever,

0:58:01 > 0:58:03for what he was battling and had to overcome.

0:58:03 > 0:58:07So to walk out of Rio with a bronze medal was disappointing for him

0:58:07 > 0:58:11and a lot of his fans, but it was a tremendous accomplishment,

0:58:11 > 0:58:12based on how he entered that meet.

0:58:17 > 0:58:20Jess and Greg's stories in Rio are a reminder that the

0:58:20 > 0:58:23defence of an Olympic title is no small feat.

0:58:24 > 0:58:28Each relentless four-year cycle presents new challenges

0:58:28 > 0:58:31and demands everything you have to give.

0:58:31 > 0:58:34- STEVE CRAM:- In a sport like athletics,

0:58:34 > 0:58:37you normally get a short period where you dominate.

0:58:37 > 0:58:40But Mo treats every season - or he has for the last few years -

0:58:40 > 0:58:42"This is my one chance to win!"

0:58:42 > 0:58:44You know, and if you can keep that hunger, which he has done,

0:58:44 > 0:58:47then you get the results he does.

0:58:47 > 0:58:51There's no-one can pace me, so what's the best way?

0:58:51 > 0:58:53Get somebody on a bike.

0:58:53 > 0:58:57I've done altogether over 10 miles, with just this session alone.

0:58:57 > 0:59:00Did a three-mile warm-up, that's 13.

0:59:00 > 0:59:02And then I'll do another three cooldown, that's 16,

0:59:02 > 0:59:04and then run again tonight.

0:59:05 > 0:59:08The thing that comes across most in spending time with him,

0:59:08 > 0:59:10he loves this stuff.

0:59:10 > 0:59:12This is what he does.

0:59:12 > 0:59:14This is what he wants to do.

0:59:14 > 0:59:17And I think if there was a message for anybody to learn,

0:59:17 > 0:59:20if you can learn it, it's, yes, you've got to train hard,

0:59:20 > 0:59:23yes, you've got to be competitive, you've got to be serious,

0:59:23 > 0:59:25professional and a whole bag of other things.

0:59:25 > 0:59:28But you've also got to have fun.

0:59:32 > 0:59:35Mo's ambition in Rio would be to defend an Olympic

0:59:35 > 0:59:38double in two gruelling, long-distance events.

0:59:39 > 0:59:43A feat only accomplished by one other athlete in history -

0:59:43 > 0:59:46the legendary Lasse Viren.

0:59:46 > 0:59:49Going to Rio, I probably felt a little bit more tired, fatigued,

0:59:49 > 0:59:55but at the same time, I'd had four years of training, solid training.

0:59:55 > 0:59:59So that was good, I didn't have any setbacks where I was missing

0:59:59 > 1:00:02a month here, two months here, it was all pretty good.

1:00:03 > 1:00:05It's looking good for Mo so far.

1:00:07 > 1:00:10Oh, Mo's fallen! He's quickly up.

1:00:10 > 1:00:12Just got a little clip there.

1:00:12 > 1:00:14It was shock at that point, when I fell.

1:00:14 > 1:00:17I felt like my race was over, I was done.

1:00:17 > 1:00:19But I had to pick up and be strong and think,

1:00:19 > 1:00:22"Look, I didn't work hard for nothing."

1:00:22 > 1:00:26And try and save as much energy as I can and not panic.

1:00:26 > 1:00:30The incident, in itself, there was no reason

1:00:30 > 1:00:34for him not to be able to come back from that physically.

1:00:34 > 1:00:38Other athletes, or other people, might have then spent part of that

1:00:38 > 1:00:42race worrying about the fact, "I've just fallen, what does that mean?

1:00:42 > 1:00:43"Do I feel OK?" Whereas with Mo,

1:00:43 > 1:00:47he just slots straight back into his, "I'm winning this."

1:00:50 > 1:00:53Tanui going hard, going as fast as he can.

1:00:53 > 1:00:55Mo Farah, having to work hard.

1:00:55 > 1:00:59Tanui's giving it everything, but here comes Mo Farah!

1:00:59 > 1:01:02Mo Farah moves out, and he opens those legs of his,

1:01:02 > 1:01:04and he's sprinting away!

1:01:05 > 1:01:08They succumb to the inevitable.

1:01:08 > 1:01:11Bow to his superiority,

1:01:11 > 1:01:13Mo Farah wins the gold!

1:01:16 > 1:01:21With that win in the 10,000m, Mo Farah became the first ever

1:01:21 > 1:01:25British track and field athlete to win three Olympic gold medals.

1:01:26 > 1:01:29His attention now turned to the 5,000m.

1:01:30 > 1:01:34I don't think it was that difficult for him to come back for the 5,000m.

1:01:34 > 1:01:35I really don't.

1:01:35 > 1:01:38I don't think he thought anything different than,

1:01:38 > 1:01:42"I'll win 10,000 and then I'll come back and I'll win the 5,000."

1:01:42 > 1:01:44There was only ever going to be one result.

1:01:44 > 1:01:46He knew that and the others knew that.

1:01:48 > 1:01:50They're trying to catch him,

1:01:50 > 1:01:53and Farah looks up to his inside, checks there's no danger there.

1:01:57 > 1:02:01Mo Farah is going to get gold for Great Britain again!

1:02:01 > 1:02:03The double-double.

1:02:06 > 1:02:09I can't believe it, it hasn't sunk in yet!

1:02:09 > 1:02:11- NEIL BLACK:- He's done something for both himself

1:02:11 > 1:02:15and for British athletics that's kind of monumental.

1:02:15 > 1:02:18To come back, year after year,

1:02:18 > 1:02:21to have done the double-double,

1:02:21 > 1:02:23you can't really measure it.

1:02:24 > 1:02:27If you dream of something and you have ambitions

1:02:27 > 1:02:30and you're willing to work hard, you can achieve your dreams.

1:02:36 > 1:02:38As London prepares to welcome

1:02:38 > 1:02:43the best in the world for the 2017 World Athletics Championships,

1:02:43 > 1:02:47Greg is faced with one of the toughest decisions of his career.

1:02:49 > 1:02:51I'm not where I need to be.

1:02:51 > 1:02:55I've not had a season this dogged with injury probably for 10 years.

1:02:55 > 1:02:582007 was the last time it was this bad.

1:02:58 > 1:03:01Early on, I ended up herniating a disc in my back.

1:03:01 > 1:03:04After that, probably the big one,

1:03:04 > 1:03:07I ended up tearing two ligaments in my left ankle.

1:03:07 > 1:03:12At that point, I realised, I think, that my World Championships,

1:03:12 > 1:03:14my World Championship bid was over.

1:03:18 > 1:03:20I now have two children.

1:03:20 > 1:03:25My second son was born not long ago now, he's very little.

1:03:25 > 1:03:27- Hello!- Hello!

1:03:27 > 1:03:30For me, far more important than jumping, and what will always

1:03:30 > 1:03:34be more important than jumping, is how good a dad I can be.

1:03:34 > 1:03:35And actually, do you know what,

1:03:35 > 1:03:38I now get a summer where I can hang out with my kids the whole time.

1:03:38 > 1:03:42I'm fascinated to see how it goes, who jumps what distances

1:03:42 > 1:03:43and who wins the medals.

1:03:43 > 1:03:47But there while always be this part of me watching it,

1:03:47 > 1:03:49knowing that if I were there and fit,

1:03:49 > 1:03:53that one of those medals could very easily have been one of mine.

1:03:53 > 1:03:55So it's going to be...

1:03:55 > 1:03:57It's going to be difficult to watch.

1:04:00 > 1:04:02For Jess, at these World Championships,

1:04:02 > 1:04:06there's an entirely new challenge - being a spectator.

1:04:07 > 1:04:10So how are you finding retirement?

1:04:10 > 1:04:14In all honesty, I'm just loving every minute of it.

1:04:14 > 1:04:17It's just nice to not have that constant worry about training and

1:04:17 > 1:04:22whether you're ahead of where you need to be, whether you're behind.

1:04:22 > 1:04:24Whether you're in good shape or bad shape.

1:04:24 > 1:04:28It's just, yeah, nice to have some freedom.

1:04:28 > 1:04:30So, World Championships this summer in London,

1:04:30 > 1:04:33you'll have an opportunity to be there, you looking forward to it?

1:04:33 > 1:04:35How do you think you're going to feel?

1:04:35 > 1:04:37It's going to be completely different for me,

1:04:37 > 1:04:39but I'm really looking forward to it.

1:04:39 > 1:04:43It'll be nice to just enjoy the sport from a different perspective.

1:04:43 > 1:04:48I know how the athletes are feeling and the adrenaline and the nerves,

1:04:48 > 1:04:49and it'll be nice to sit there

1:04:49 > 1:04:52knowing I don't have to go through all those events

1:04:52 > 1:04:57and finish with an 800, and just enjoy watching.

1:04:57 > 1:05:00After the years of training and competing around the world,

1:05:00 > 1:05:02Mo will return to London,

1:05:02 > 1:05:06the city where his love affair with running began.

1:05:07 > 1:05:10There's no place like home, London's where it's at.

1:05:10 > 1:05:12This is where it happened, where my life has changed.

1:05:12 > 1:05:13Where my kids were born.

1:05:14 > 1:05:16I need to go and do London, win it.

1:05:16 > 1:05:20I want it probably more than any other year.

1:05:20 > 1:05:22I'm excited to be able to compete one last time

1:05:22 > 1:05:24and hang my spikes up after.

1:05:26 > 1:05:29Looking back to Super Saturday,

1:05:29 > 1:05:32that unforgettable night in the Olympic Stadium...

1:05:34 > 1:05:37..Jess, Mo and Greg were each propelled

1:05:37 > 1:05:40into a new stage of their lives.

1:05:40 > 1:05:43Three gold medals for Great Britain!

1:05:43 > 1:05:44What a night!

1:05:45 > 1:05:48The journeys they have been on since then tell the truth

1:05:48 > 1:05:51about what it takes to become the best in the world.

1:05:52 > 1:05:54Storybook athletics.

1:05:55 > 1:05:58I've been impressed by their determination and resilience.

1:06:00 > 1:06:03The hard graft and the sacrifices that each of them has made

1:06:03 > 1:06:06are the reason we get to witness the extraordinary

1:06:06 > 1:06:10moments of competition unfold before us.

1:06:11 > 1:06:15Five years ago, the Olympic Stadium provided a setting

1:06:15 > 1:06:20for one of the most inspirational nights in British sporting history.

1:06:20 > 1:06:23My words cannot do justice to how I feel.

1:06:25 > 1:06:27Over the next two weeks,

1:06:27 > 1:06:31my hope is that the very same stadium will once again

1:06:31 > 1:06:34become an arena where we can feel inspired

1:06:34 > 1:06:39in the knowledge that the journey to get there is never straightforward.

1:06:40 > 1:06:42London, here we come.
