0:00:04 > 0:00:08Augusta National, golf's fantasyland.

0:00:08 > 0:00:10There was a time when those from these isles

0:00:10 > 0:00:14made the green, green grass of Georgia a home from home.

0:00:14 > 0:00:16COMMENTATOR: Yes, what a man.

0:00:16 > 0:00:21Passing on the prized jacket to one another each springtime.

0:00:21 > 0:00:23When Nick Faldo overtook a broken Greg Norman

0:00:23 > 0:00:26on a memorable Sunday in 1996,

0:00:26 > 0:00:29the next British winner was surely just around the corner.

0:00:29 > 0:00:31AUDIENCE CHEERS AND APPLAUDS

0:00:31 > 0:00:33COMMENTATOR: That is the way champions do it.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37But then, there was Woods in '97.

0:00:37 > 0:00:39O'Meara in '98.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41Olazabal. Singh.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43Woods, again and again.

0:00:43 > 0:00:45Weir. Oh, that feels good.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47Mickelson. Woods.

0:00:47 > 0:00:49Mickelson. Johnson.

0:00:49 > 0:00:50Immelman.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53Cabrera. Mickelson.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55Schwartzel. Watson.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57Scott. Watson.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00And in 2015, Jordan Spieth.

0:01:00 > 0:01:0320 years had passed, and we wondered,

0:01:03 > 0:01:06"Where would our next Masters champion come from?"

0:01:20 > 0:01:23We used to play any sport, really, like boys do.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25Anything we could get us hands on, football, rugby, cricket, whatever,

0:01:25 > 0:01:27and golf was this sport where I could beat

0:01:27 > 0:01:29me two older brothers and me dad.

0:01:29 > 0:01:34We obviously lived a mile, a mile and a half, from Birley Wood.

0:01:34 > 0:01:36My dad was a vicar at Hackenthorpe down the road.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38You'd run home from school, get your clubs on your back

0:01:38 > 0:01:40and get on the tram with all the schoolkids

0:01:40 > 0:01:42and you're just like... "This looks daft, doesn't it?

0:01:42 > 0:01:45"I'm on a tram here with my golf clubs and my practice bag."

0:01:45 > 0:01:48So, yeah, if the tram was not there, or if the trams were busy,

0:01:48 > 0:01:49I'd end up just walking up the road,

0:01:49 > 0:01:52head down, walk up, go and see Pete and see how he was

0:01:52 > 0:01:56and have a cup of tea, and then go out and practice.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01Birley Wood is an inner-city golf club

0:02:01 > 0:02:03in the middle of an estate which

0:02:03 > 0:02:06most people wouldn't want to walk in those days.

0:02:06 > 0:02:08But a fantastic area for kids to

0:02:08 > 0:02:09come and develop their own skills.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12Pete Ball was definitely one of those people

0:02:12 > 0:02:14within the early years of my career, that was...

0:02:14 > 0:02:17He was the one who enabled me to...

0:02:17 > 0:02:19He let me practice and gave me his time,

0:02:19 > 0:02:21which, you know, out of all of it, is the most important thing.

0:02:21 > 0:02:25He didn't stand out at that moment of time.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28His idea of hitting the golf ball wasn't great.

0:02:28 > 0:02:32He didn't quite understand where the club was and where his body was,

0:02:32 > 0:02:35and where the ball was in relation to the club.

0:02:35 > 0:02:40But, literally, within a few weeks, there was a noticeable difference.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42He could do things with a club and a ball which might take

0:02:42 > 0:02:45a lot of kids two, three years to do, to be honest.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47As kids, we were trying to beat each other.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49We were all very similar standards

0:02:49 > 0:02:52and then we sort of stayed here and he just went like that.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55Work rate, phenomenal.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59Most kids would go home about 4.15, 5 o'clock in the winter,

0:02:59 > 0:03:04when it's pitch black and pretty cold, sometimes raining.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06Almost ice - not rain, really!

0:03:06 > 0:03:08Dan stayed there until 6.30,

0:03:08 > 0:03:10practising from the lights of the pub.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13Summer holidays was, in the early days, from dawn till dusk.

0:03:13 > 0:03:14Mum and Dad would drop me off,

0:03:14 > 0:03:18give you a fiver for your lunch, pick you up again when it was dark.

0:03:18 > 0:03:22And that was kind of how it went.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Within a short while of meeting him, I knew he was special.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27He used to say to me,

0:03:27 > 0:03:29"Do you know the answer to this?"

0:03:29 > 0:03:30when we are doing skills challenges,

0:03:30 > 0:03:32and you say, "Yeah, I know the answer."

0:03:32 > 0:03:34He said, "Well, get on and tell me quick,

0:03:34 > 0:03:37"cos I don't want to waste time doing some of this stuff," he said.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40He was almost impatient to learn,

0:03:40 > 0:03:42which was a good thing for him.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44He had a way of working that was

0:03:44 > 0:03:46better than whatever we were doing.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48We might put the hours in,

0:03:48 > 0:03:49but the quality, in my opinion,

0:03:49 > 0:03:54what he used to do, was just far superior.

0:03:54 > 0:03:56I remember when I first picked up a club,

0:03:56 > 0:03:58obviously Tiger was in his peak, in his prime.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01Seemed like every other week, he was winning golf tournaments.

0:04:03 > 0:04:04It was always, with your pals,

0:04:04 > 0:04:06test yourself and to have little competitions.

0:04:06 > 0:04:08And you're always on the putting green,

0:04:08 > 0:04:10got a ten-footer here to win The Open,

0:04:10 > 0:04:13to win the Masters, to win the US Open, to win the US PGA.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16It was always to win a major, because they're the events

0:04:16 > 0:04:18that you watch on TV.

0:04:18 > 0:04:20I always knew he'd win tournaments.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24That was never, sort of...the question.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27But being a Major winner,

0:04:27 > 0:04:30yeah, I would say I thought he'd be a major winner.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32I knew he'd be a major winner.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35And so, the son of a vicar from Sheffield

0:04:35 > 0:04:37moved to the very top of the amateur game,

0:04:37 > 0:04:38with Walker Cup honours.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43Before taking his promise and personality

0:04:43 > 0:04:45to the professional ranks.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48I think that should be quite good.

0:04:48 > 0:04:52'What you see on a golf course with Dan is...that's him.

0:04:52 > 0:04:53'Unbelievably competitive.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56'If you're playing with him for the first time,

0:04:56 > 0:04:59'you'd soon grasp, after a few holes,'

0:04:59 > 0:05:01of just why he is so good.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04You'd understand how much attention to detail,

0:05:04 > 0:05:08how competitive he is, and he won't let you win.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12Then, Willett, the winner.

0:05:12 > 0:05:14First in 2012,

0:05:14 > 0:05:18and a breakthrough 2015 season, with two victories.

0:05:18 > 0:05:19A first trip to Augusta

0:05:19 > 0:05:23and a sixth-place finish at The Open Championship.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25COMMENTATOR: Lovely, lovely, lovely. That is a beauty.

0:05:25 > 0:05:30It was a great learning experience to do it at St Andrews.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33Being up there in contention was unbelievable.

0:05:33 > 0:05:35The way Dan is, once he gets that bit of confidence,

0:05:35 > 0:05:37that is it, he is off.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Another win at the start of 2016

0:05:40 > 0:05:44came after news of a first child for Danny and his wife Nicole,

0:05:44 > 0:05:47due to arrive in the springtime.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49I'd set aside five or six weeks there where I said,

0:05:49 > 0:05:51"Right, I'm not going to play golf here."

0:05:51 > 0:05:53Obviously, he was due Masters Sunday,

0:05:53 > 0:05:55so if he would've come Masters Sunday,

0:05:55 > 0:05:57I'd have been at home, watching it on TV.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00So I had made the decision not to go, if he had not come along.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02So, I was always on standby.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05Then, he was up in the air, but, at the end of the day,

0:06:05 > 0:06:07it is your firstborn.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10You know, some things are bigger than golf.

0:06:10 > 0:06:14Luckily, he came on the 29th of March, on the Tuesday,

0:06:14 > 0:06:17which gave me time to be in hospital with Nic

0:06:17 > 0:06:20and make sure she was all right, to bring her out of hospital

0:06:20 > 0:06:23and take her home and look after her for a few days,

0:06:23 > 0:06:26and then feel somewhat all right about leaving her.

0:06:26 > 0:06:29She then said, you know, "Of course you are all right to go play.

0:06:29 > 0:06:30"Don't worry about me - I'll be fine."

0:06:30 > 0:06:32That was it, really,

0:06:32 > 0:06:37that was then the seven most surreal days of golf that followed that.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49It's such a special event.

0:06:49 > 0:06:51The first time we went there,

0:06:51 > 0:06:53every time I walked onto Amen Corner,

0:06:53 > 0:06:56I said to Dan, "Walking down 11, I have goosebumps every day."

0:06:56 > 0:07:00Because I've watched people do it, and there is only...

0:07:00 > 0:07:03The only inside the ropes are player and caddie,

0:07:03 > 0:07:06and I was like, "Dan, it does not matter what we do in life.

0:07:06 > 0:07:07"You can't buy this."

0:07:10 > 0:07:12The whole area of Augusta, the golf course,

0:07:12 > 0:07:16the atmosphere when you walk through the gates or down the drive,

0:07:16 > 0:07:22it is a bit surreal, because I have been there for five times now

0:07:22 > 0:07:25and lucky enough to have walked around every single hole.

0:07:25 > 0:07:30You never, ever see a weed at all in the place.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33It is pretty, pretty unique. It is such a special place.

0:07:33 > 0:07:35The greens are big,

0:07:35 > 0:07:37and they are lightning fast.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40Ordinary golfers never see anything like it.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42There are so many difficult golf holes around that golf course

0:07:42 > 0:07:45where, if you're playing good golf, yeah, you can shoot a good score.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47If you are slightly off,

0:07:47 > 0:07:49it can make you look a little bit silly at times.

0:07:49 > 0:07:53So, a week to the day after the early arrival of Zachariah Willett,

0:07:53 > 0:07:57Danny made it to the 80th Masters on Tuesday of tournament week,

0:07:57 > 0:08:01the last of 89 competitors to register.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04He was a proud dad and just the way he was walking round,

0:08:04 > 0:08:08he was a lot more relaxed, he was...

0:08:08 > 0:08:11he was dead chuffed with himself and what had happened for him.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14A lot of people say, "Your mind must've been elsewhere,

0:08:14 > 0:08:16"you're not thinking about golf, the expectations must've been low."

0:08:16 > 0:08:18They are, to a certain extent,

0:08:18 > 0:08:20because you have got other things that you are thinking about.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23Obviously, when you get down to the nitty-gritty,

0:08:23 > 0:08:25you are thinking about playing good golf.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28When the golf began, American sensation Jordan Spieth

0:08:28 > 0:08:31seemed to be making light work of his title defence.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34He led the way after each of the first three days,

0:08:34 > 0:08:37with Willett three shots behind going into Sunday.

0:08:40 > 0:08:43HAZEL IRVINE: Hello, welcome back to Augusta National,

0:08:43 > 0:08:46on what is one of the great days in any sport.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48Masters Sunday,

0:08:48 > 0:08:52a day when tailor-made excellence is rewarded with a green jacket,

0:08:52 > 0:08:55in this, the 80th playing of the tournament.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58We went into Sunday three shots back,

0:08:58 > 0:09:00which around any golf course isn't very much,

0:09:00 > 0:09:04let alone around Augusta, on a Sunday, with the Masters.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06We were both like little kids.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08We're kind of in contention going into Sunday

0:09:08 > 0:09:11playing with Lee Westwood and Billy, who are good friends,

0:09:11 > 0:09:16but Westy is still someone we've watched, growing up, on TV,

0:09:16 > 0:09:19and you've watched him on a Sunday at Masters

0:09:19 > 0:09:20I don't know how many times.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23So, it was just... It was cool!

0:09:25 > 0:09:28COMMENTATOR: Danny Willett. Lovely tee shot.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30Just hung on to the edge of that table top.

0:09:30 > 0:09:33And takes advantage. Two for Danny Willett.

0:09:33 > 0:09:38So, moves to one under par. Three behind Jordan Spieth.

0:09:38 > 0:09:39At six, we birdied.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41Eight, we birdied.

0:09:41 > 0:09:43And then you're kind of there or thereabouts.

0:09:43 > 0:09:45But then, you're watching Spieth.

0:09:46 > 0:09:50In she comes. There it is. There is another one.

0:09:50 > 0:09:54By jolly, he has holed some crucial puts.

0:09:54 > 0:09:58I've gone, "Well, there is not much we can do about that."

0:09:58 > 0:10:00Spieth.

0:10:00 > 0:10:02He has gone straight at it, I fancy.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05And he...

0:10:05 > 0:10:07Yes, is that going to move down?

0:10:10 > 0:10:13Amazing, amazing. He is relentless.

0:10:15 > 0:10:17Willett, at the ninth for his par.

0:10:17 > 0:10:21He'd made an unbelievable par save down nine,

0:10:21 > 0:10:24and holed what can only probably be described as

0:10:24 > 0:10:26the smelliest little nine-footer.

0:10:26 > 0:10:28This will be a great putt to hole.

0:10:28 > 0:10:30And he does!

0:10:30 > 0:10:31Wow.

0:10:33 > 0:10:35You know, when you talk about momentum, it is one thing

0:10:35 > 0:10:37that he did unbelievable all week,

0:10:37 > 0:10:38and it just kept us going.

0:10:38 > 0:10:43I remember watching, going back years and years, you see people,

0:10:43 > 0:10:45it's all about the back nine on Sunday at Augusta

0:10:45 > 0:10:47because of the holes that they are.

0:10:47 > 0:10:49Stepped on the 10th tee, he has hit his tee shot,

0:10:49 > 0:10:51and then, as we're walking off it, he says,

0:10:51 > 0:10:54"Well, we are in contention on a Sunday at the Masters."

0:10:54 > 0:10:58And like I say, we were both just laughing,

0:10:58 > 0:10:59realising what situation we were in.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02Makeable chance here for Spieth.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05Up the hill. And...

0:11:05 > 0:11:06Got it!

0:11:06 > 0:11:10He has got a stranglehold on this golf tournament at the moment.

0:11:10 > 0:11:15That is a five-shot lead heading to the back nine at Augusta.

0:11:15 > 0:11:17Four birdies in a row for Jordan Spieth.

0:11:17 > 0:11:21Danny Willett is going to have to make decisions now.

0:11:21 > 0:11:23Every single step throughout that entire day,

0:11:23 > 0:11:25he kept himself two or three shots in front,

0:11:25 > 0:11:27which around that golf course is just enough

0:11:27 > 0:11:29to give you a little bit of breathing room.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31This is for his birdie at the 13th.

0:11:33 > 0:11:35Sweetly done.

0:11:35 > 0:11:37Then, when we birdied 13,

0:11:37 > 0:11:39that was obviously a big, big chance to take.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44Spieth seems to be in total control, although this putt for par.

0:11:49 > 0:11:50Well...

0:11:50 > 0:11:55And then 14...hit, obviously, a great shot in there.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03Willett.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06COMMENTATOR: He has got that look in his eye, Ken.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09It was a four-footer that we couldn't quite tell

0:12:09 > 0:12:11which way it was going to go.

0:12:11 > 0:12:12It was one of those straight downhills.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15You're trying to look for it breaking out of one side,

0:12:15 > 0:12:17but it wasn't obvious.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19A big moment for Danny Willett.

0:12:19 > 0:12:21At the moment, to get within two of Spieth.

0:12:24 > 0:12:25Oh, he is doing all he can.

0:12:25 > 0:12:29Danny Willett pushing Spieth hardest of all.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32Then, all the sudden, you've kind of pulled a gap on third,

0:12:32 > 0:12:34you get a bit closer to the lead,

0:12:34 > 0:12:36and you think, "We've got to keep pushing."

0:12:37 > 0:12:41So, once more to the well he goes with this magical stick.

0:12:43 > 0:12:45COMMENTATOR: The tendency is to think that this putt

0:12:45 > 0:12:49will move to the right, but it is virtually dead straight up the hill.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53Oh, it actually went a little left, even! Goodness!

0:12:53 > 0:12:55You are so right, Paul.

0:12:57 > 0:12:58That is the way he saw it.

0:12:58 > 0:13:01Didn't mis-strike it. Just slightly misread it.

0:13:01 > 0:13:05And a Jordan Spieth has dropped shots on the 10th and 11th.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08He leads by one from Danny Willett.

0:13:08 > 0:13:11He makes this walk up to the 12th tee,

0:13:11 > 0:13:13and all sorts of thoughts in his head now.

0:13:13 > 0:13:15It's a very tricky session of golf.

0:13:15 > 0:13:17Of course, everyone knows how difficult them holes are,

0:13:17 > 0:13:19with the wind swirling between the trees.

0:13:23 > 0:13:24Just let it release.

0:13:31 > 0:13:33COMMENTATOR: That's right...

0:13:33 > 0:13:34And that's water!

0:13:34 > 0:13:37And just like that, five shots gone.

0:13:39 > 0:13:40Goodness!

0:13:42 > 0:13:44For someone of his young age,

0:13:44 > 0:13:47who appeared to be so cool and calm,

0:13:47 > 0:13:48it came as a big surprise.

0:13:50 > 0:13:52Easily the most difficult shot in golf,

0:13:52 > 0:13:56after you've dumped it in the water with the lead,

0:13:56 > 0:13:58long is no good, short is no good.

0:14:00 > 0:14:01Oh, no.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04Oh, my word, he's chunked it. He has chunked it.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07And Jordan Spieth is sinking without trace in the Masters.

0:14:07 > 0:14:09This is extraordinary.

0:14:09 > 0:14:10Danny Willett now.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13Doesn't realise it, but he is in the catbird seat.

0:14:13 > 0:14:17Danny Willett will shortly lead the Masters.

0:14:17 > 0:14:19Another attempt now for Jordan Spieth.

0:14:22 > 0:14:24Shot number five.

0:14:24 > 0:14:25Gone long.

0:14:25 > 0:14:28Now, what is happening? What is going on?

0:14:28 > 0:14:30Where is Jordan Spieth?

0:14:30 > 0:14:35For the first time all week, Jordan Spieth has given up the lead.

0:14:35 > 0:14:36It happens. That's our sport, you know?

0:14:36 > 0:14:38Jordan didn't mean to do it.

0:14:38 > 0:14:39He just made a bad swing at the wrong time

0:14:39 > 0:14:43and then, mentally, made a mistake on top of that again.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46Augusta, of all golf courses. You can get away with one mistake

0:14:46 > 0:14:48and make a bogey or a double or something, you're still OK.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51But at Augusta, you pay a severe penalty.

0:14:51 > 0:14:53The next time we saw a leaderboard, Westie had just chipped in

0:14:53 > 0:14:56from the back edge of 15, to get within one of us.

0:14:56 > 0:15:00COMMENTARY: Lee Westwood, this for eagle across the green.

0:15:00 > 0:15:02What if this went in?

0:15:04 > 0:15:08Oh, and it has gone in! Oh, my goodness!

0:15:08 > 0:15:13And just like that, Westwood one back and he's one back

0:15:13 > 0:15:18of his playing partner, Danny Willett, who now leads the Masters.

0:15:18 > 0:15:21That was, kind of, goose bumps, because the crowd

0:15:21 > 0:15:26went ballistic for a minute and the sound was just ridiculous.

0:15:26 > 0:15:28COMMENTARY: I think it's a very good thing

0:15:28 > 0:15:31that Danny Willett does not know what's happening on the 12th yet.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34COMMENTARY: How will Danny Willett react when he sees

0:15:34 > 0:15:37that he is leading the golf tournament?

0:15:37 > 0:15:39I'll never forget it, walking towards the 16th tee.

0:15:39 > 0:15:42And, literally, Jon put the flag in, walking back,

0:15:42 > 0:15:45we were both like, "Good effort, that," whatever,

0:15:45 > 0:15:48and then we heard all the oohs and aahs.

0:15:48 > 0:15:50CHEERING We turned round.

0:15:50 > 0:15:52Obviously, it's a massive scoreboard.

0:15:52 > 0:15:56This one guy went like this and I was like, "What's that about?"

0:15:56 > 0:15:59Then everyone's like, "Whoa," and you're hearing mumblings

0:15:59 > 0:16:01and you turn round and they've changed the scoreboard.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04We kind of looked up and kind of looked back at each other,

0:16:04 > 0:16:06just waiting almost for them to change the score again

0:16:06 > 0:16:07because they've got it wrong.

0:16:07 > 0:16:11And then you obviously realise what position you're in.

0:16:11 > 0:16:15And we were just like, "Interesting!"

0:16:15 > 0:16:20Once you get in a tense situation in sport, this gets busy.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23Pictures come in, thoughts come in.

0:16:23 > 0:16:27I ran to the bathroom and I'm in the bathroom just thinking,

0:16:27 > 0:16:29"This is what you practised for."

0:16:29 > 0:16:31My hands are shaking, you're nervous,

0:16:31 > 0:16:33but this is what you practised for. How do you not embrace it?

0:16:33 > 0:16:36Someone shouted in the crowd, "You're leading the Masters,"

0:16:36 > 0:16:37and you go, "That sounds good to me."

0:16:37 > 0:16:41He took himself away from the tee box and I thought that

0:16:41 > 0:16:42was very clever of him,

0:16:42 > 0:16:45just to distance himself from the atmosphere,

0:16:45 > 0:16:49to try and just look after himself in the heat of the moment.

0:16:49 > 0:16:52I just kept telling myself, "You've got five good swings.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54"That's all you need. See if you can hole a couple of putts

0:16:54 > 0:16:55"and see what happens."

0:16:55 > 0:16:57COMMENTARY: This is all new for him.

0:16:57 > 0:17:01I'm sure he's never experienced what he's feeling right now.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04You know, you've hit it a million times in practice

0:17:04 > 0:17:06and you just try and go back to keeping it as simple as possible.

0:17:06 > 0:17:09Well, what do you do here? Well, I'm trying to hit this eight iron.

0:17:09 > 0:17:11I can't remember the exact numbers.

0:17:11 > 0:17:13Jonny'll know, he'll probably still have his book at home.

0:17:13 > 0:17:18We had 181 flag, down and out the right and we just create a picture.

0:17:18 > 0:17:21Yeah, your hands are shaking, your mind's racing a little bit

0:17:21 > 0:17:25and your heart's pumping, but again it literally does come back to,

0:17:25 > 0:17:27"I've hit this shot on the range a million times.

0:17:27 > 0:17:29"Just do what you do."

0:17:29 > 0:17:32COMMENTARY: Take a deep breath.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39COMMENTARY: Swinging a big eight iron

0:17:39 > 0:17:41from right to left. It's 181 yards.

0:17:41 > 0:17:44That's a massive shot and a fantastic result.

0:17:44 > 0:17:48All of a sudden, Danny Willett in control

0:17:48 > 0:17:51of his own fate, maybe, here.

0:17:51 > 0:17:54I stepped up there and hit what a lot of people would see

0:17:54 > 0:17:56as one of the best shots on that Sunday.

0:17:56 > 0:18:00The pressure that would have been on him. He knew that a good tee shot

0:18:00 > 0:18:02there would set him up nicely for the last couple of holes

0:18:02 > 0:18:04and the way he kept his nerve,

0:18:04 > 0:18:08you just have to admire him because these guys were under huge pressure.

0:18:08 > 0:18:10Everyone's telling you walking down the hole,

0:18:10 > 0:18:13"Come on, Danny, this is yours," or, "Don't mess it up," you know.

0:18:13 > 0:18:15Some people are saying all sorts of different things.

0:18:15 > 0:18:19If you ask him, he probably didn't even hear any of it.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21He was in one of those frames of mind

0:18:21 > 0:18:23that he was ridiculously focused.

0:18:23 > 0:18:25For some reason, on that Sunday,

0:18:25 > 0:18:27I was the best I've been mentally ever,

0:18:27 > 0:18:29I would have said, on a golf course.

0:18:29 > 0:18:32COMMENTARY: The biggest putt of his young life.

0:18:34 > 0:18:38COMMENTARY: In it goes! Another one for Willett. He leads by two.

0:18:38 > 0:18:42He's two holes from home. Is the green jacket to be his?

0:18:46 > 0:18:49All of a sudden, we've gone in the last 45 minutes

0:18:49 > 0:18:51from, I think, three or four behind to three in front.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54The phone rang. It's my middle son.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56He said, "You need to turn the TV on. It looks like Danny is going to

0:18:56 > 0:18:59"win the Masters," so I turned round and said, "Are you winding me up?"

0:18:59 > 0:19:01He went, "I'm serious. Danny might win the Masters."

0:19:01 > 0:19:03With a few holes to go, I was watching at home

0:19:03 > 0:19:06and I turned to my son and I said, "He's got this. He'll win."

0:19:06 > 0:19:09And he looked at me and said, "How do you know this?"

0:19:09 > 0:19:14I said, "I've seen that look before. He's got this. He'll win this."

0:19:14 > 0:19:17As soon as that, he holed that again,

0:19:17 > 0:19:21I turned my back on him and walked to the tee because he doesn't need

0:19:21 > 0:19:27any encouragement or, "Oh, you're in the lead," or blah-blah-blah.

0:19:27 > 0:19:29You've got another shot to hit. You've got two more holes.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31And then, when he missed the 17th green,

0:19:31 > 0:19:33I just knew that he'd get up and down.

0:19:33 > 0:19:35I'd seen him play shots like that.

0:19:35 > 0:19:36COMMENTARY: Here's Willett.

0:19:36 > 0:19:37It looks fairly innocuous,

0:19:37 > 0:19:42but there's a big slope all the way left to right downhill.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45Looking back, it was a really tricky chip.

0:19:45 > 0:19:47I think I was going to go back there and put a ball down

0:19:47 > 0:19:48and see just how difficult it is.

0:19:48 > 0:19:51You've got to loft the ball maybe that far in the air,

0:19:51 > 0:19:57see it pitch and then run, find the contours and stop by the hole.

0:19:59 > 0:20:00It got to the top of the hill.

0:20:00 > 0:20:02I was like, "Oh, he's not hit it hard enough."

0:20:02 > 0:20:05And then it rolled over. I was like, "Oh, that's quick, isn't it?"

0:20:05 > 0:20:10COMMENTARY: It looks a good speed. That looks a very good speed.

0:20:10 > 0:20:12CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:20:12 > 0:20:15That's a magnificent shot.

0:20:15 > 0:20:19I chipped it pretty much stone dead, which, around Augusta, you don't do.

0:20:19 > 0:20:22So, yeah, it was an unbelievable chip shot.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26COMMENTARY: All down to this fella.

0:20:26 > 0:20:31COMMENTARY: Well, it's downhill and just the slightest touch.

0:20:31 > 0:20:34Needs something magical now, Spieth.

0:20:35 > 0:20:36Might have it.

0:20:41 > 0:20:43COMMENTARY: One good, clean, straight drive

0:20:43 > 0:20:46and you'll be 80% there.

0:20:47 > 0:20:51That tee shot, to me, looks like a hotel corridor.

0:20:51 > 0:20:54I was stood there watching, thinking,

0:20:54 > 0:20:56"That's getting narrower, that tee shot."

0:20:59 > 0:21:02COMMENTARY: He's done it, Ken, I think. He's...

0:21:02 > 0:21:08He's done it beautifully.

0:21:08 > 0:21:12Again, hands shaking, everything shaking and then, you know,

0:21:12 > 0:21:15the walk then was pretty enjoyable up to that second shot.

0:21:15 > 0:21:17It's still not over. You know how tricky that last green is.

0:21:17 > 0:21:22Just a cut off that right-hand tower, come up to... Exactly.

0:21:22 > 0:21:25COMMENTARY: Exactly. You can do it.

0:21:25 > 0:21:30What a great moment, though, for British golf, English golf,

0:21:30 > 0:21:32Yorkshire golf, if he can do it.

0:21:36 > 0:21:38Good swing.

0:21:38 > 0:21:39I think it's straight enough.

0:21:39 > 0:21:43Yes, it is now. What a nice little bounce!

0:21:43 > 0:21:47Oh, yes, the golfing gods are smiling.

0:21:49 > 0:21:52Walking up to the green was an unbelievable experience.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55Again, we're having a little giggle to ourselves

0:21:55 > 0:21:59walking up the 18th, realising what position we're in.

0:22:02 > 0:22:05COMMENTARY: I wonder what he's thinking at this moment.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07It was almost not the realisation of,

0:22:07 > 0:22:10"We've got a genuine chance here."

0:22:10 > 0:22:14I was still pretty focused, but not far off the job,

0:22:14 > 0:22:16as much as what we could control, being done.

0:22:16 > 0:22:18COMMENTARY: Can you imagine it?

0:22:18 > 0:22:20A chance to button up the green jacket.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22And you look at the putt and you just think, "Yeah,

0:22:22 > 0:22:25"it'd be nice to get to six under, but I don't want to drop to four."

0:22:27 > 0:22:30COMMENTARY: Tippy-tappy, tippy-tappy...

0:22:30 > 0:22:36Ooh, that looks not bad, but he wishes it were six inches nearer.

0:22:36 > 0:22:39"I'll just walk over here and have a talk to my caddy."

0:22:39 > 0:22:41I think he'd been playing well in the jumper all day.

0:22:41 > 0:22:44I think he'd got that warm, cos I was boiling,

0:22:44 > 0:22:47but I think we're all quite superstitious in our own ways.

0:22:47 > 0:22:50There's not many golfers that don't have their own little superstition,

0:22:50 > 0:22:53but I think once he'd tapped it up as close as he had,

0:22:53 > 0:22:55he probably thought, "I can take it off.

0:22:55 > 0:22:58"I'm going to struggle to mess it up from here!"

0:22:58 > 0:23:00COMMENTARY: Now, Willett...

0:23:02 > 0:23:0318 inches, maybe a bit less.

0:23:05 > 0:23:08Gently, gently... Oh, well done!

0:23:08 > 0:23:13Well done. Now, we just wait and see. We wait and see.

0:23:21 > 0:23:26The walk from the 18th to the clubhouse was just bonkers.

0:23:26 > 0:23:30He put his arm round me and I was like, "Dan, what have we done?

0:23:30 > 0:23:33"What? This is bizarre."

0:23:33 > 0:23:34CHEERING

0:23:34 > 0:23:36We're kind of walking off the 18th

0:23:36 > 0:23:39and we half-think that we've won the Masters.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44And then, yeah, you walk up into the cabin, you sign your card,

0:23:44 > 0:23:47make sure you've got all that right and then it is just a waiting game.

0:23:47 > 0:23:49You've got off and you've got 150 text messages,

0:23:49 > 0:23:51umpteen missed calls

0:23:51 > 0:23:54and you're trying to get in touch with Nic, to see how she is.

0:23:54 > 0:23:56You all right? How are you all doing?

0:23:56 > 0:23:59Yeah, just a crazy old waiting game.

0:24:01 > 0:24:03COMMENTARY: Spieth, now, can he hole this?

0:24:03 > 0:24:05COMMENTARY: If he doesn't, really, Danny's the champ.

0:24:08 > 0:24:10I was on the phone to Nic at the time

0:24:10 > 0:24:15and I remember Jonny just ran in and jumped on the sofa.

0:24:15 > 0:24:17THEY LAUGH

0:24:17 > 0:24:20I didn't even realise the cameras were there!

0:24:20 > 0:24:25It was a natural reaction to just go a bit mental, so...

0:24:26 > 0:24:28'That was the moment then when you realise

0:24:28 > 0:24:31'that what you've worked for and what you've just achieved,'

0:24:31 > 0:24:33it isn't a dream. It's come true.

0:24:35 > 0:24:40And I remember when they were fitting him for his jacket

0:24:40 > 0:24:42and I was like, "This is bizarre," and he looked across at me

0:24:42 > 0:24:46before he went into the room, just laughing,

0:24:46 > 0:24:50like we had done a few times through the day, but it was nuts.

0:24:50 > 0:24:52Jordan, would you please do the honour

0:24:52 > 0:24:54of presenting our new champion his green jacket?

0:24:54 > 0:24:56I almost fell over there.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03Danny, congratulations. We're all very proud of you.

0:25:03 > 0:25:06Welcome to our family. Thank you.

0:25:06 > 0:25:10Every one of the Major trophies is significant in their own way,

0:25:10 > 0:25:13but the green jacket, for me, is that little bit more special.

0:25:17 > 0:25:21On this very rare occasion, I'm nearly speechless.

0:25:23 > 0:25:25CHEERING

0:25:27 > 0:25:31# There's only one Danny Willett... #

0:25:31 > 0:25:36I hardly had a drink. I was like, "What's the point of drinking?"

0:25:36 > 0:25:38There was nothing that could make me feel better

0:25:38 > 0:25:40than how I was feeling that night.

0:25:40 > 0:25:43# One Danny Willett... #

0:25:44 > 0:25:48'Great party. It was brilliant seeing'

0:25:48 > 0:25:52so many of his friends with him to enjoy the moment.

0:25:52 > 0:25:55'Sir Alex Ferguson was there and gave him some great advice, said,

0:25:55 > 0:25:59"You know what Manchester United did when we won our first trophy?"

0:25:59 > 0:26:02And Danny had said, "What?" And he said, "We went and won another one."

0:26:02 > 0:26:04As regards what it means, it's...

0:26:05 > 0:26:09We've all had those putts back at our home clubs

0:26:09 > 0:26:12as juniors, amateurs, to hole a putt to win the Masters.

0:26:12 > 0:26:17And to actually go and do it and do something that you dreamed about,

0:26:17 > 0:26:22I don't think in life you get a chance to do that very often.

0:26:22 > 0:26:25I mean, for me, I always dreamed about playing and doing it,

0:26:25 > 0:26:28but I tell you what, it was mega to be as close as I was to it

0:26:28 > 0:26:30and felt like I had some sort of contribution.

0:26:30 > 0:26:35You can't imagine being at Augusta from where we come from

0:26:35 > 0:26:37and putting on the green jacket.

0:26:37 > 0:26:40It's an incredible sensation just to see that happen.

0:26:40 > 0:26:43I'm immensely proud of the young man.

0:26:47 > 0:26:49I mean, when you walk through the door at home,

0:26:49 > 0:26:53you're not Masters champion, are you? You're Dad. You're Dan.

0:26:53 > 0:26:55You're straight back to changing nappies.

0:26:55 > 0:26:58You take the jacket off, so you don't get anything on it

0:26:58 > 0:27:01and you hang it up and then you go see your little man

0:27:01 > 0:27:04and you see how he's changed just in the week that you've been away

0:27:04 > 0:27:07and you make sure Nic's all right and how everyone is

0:27:07 > 0:27:10and you lock the door and just try to enjoy it.

0:27:10 > 0:27:13It's the only time I've watched the Masters back was that evening.

0:27:13 > 0:27:14I opened up a beer with Nic on the sofa,

0:27:14 > 0:27:16we put the little man to bed

0:27:16 > 0:27:19and watched it for an hour and a half of the highlights
