:02:10. > :02:16.The World Football Cup of 1954. To Switzerland, to the football

:02:17. > :02:19.stadiums of Bern, Basel, Zurich, Lausanne, to Lugano and Geneva, come

:02:20. > :02:23.the teams of the 16 nations who have won through to these final rounds in

:02:24. > :02:25.Switzerland They come to decide who shall be the winners in the fifth

:02:26. > :02:38.competition for the Jules Rimet cup. In previous years, the cup has been

:02:39. > :02:44.won twice by Urugua and twice by Italy. The holders at the moment are

:02:45. > :02:47.Urugua and they've come again to attempt to defend their title. They

:02:48. > :02:57.won in 1950 and they won previously in 1930. The other winners, Italy,

:02:58. > :03:04.won the cup in two success of competitions - in 1934 and 1938. And

:03:05. > :03:08.the opening match is in Lausanne, a town which has high hopes of staging

:03:09. > :03:10.the 1960 Olympic games. In this inaugural match, France meets

:03:11. > :03:16.Yugoslavia. The Yugoslavians you see in the dark shirts.

:03:17. > :03:22.Now, here are the captains. On the right, Bobek of Yugoslavia. On the

:03:23. > :03:23.left, Jonquet of France. And in the middle, Referee Griffiths of Wales.

:03:24. > :03:31.And it's Yugoslavia who kick off. France fighting back, pushing the

:03:32. > :03:47.ball up into the Yugoslavian half. The danger's clearer now. But

:03:48. > :03:51.Yugoslavia coming away on the attack. Here you see the famous wing

:03:52. > :03:56.half Cajkovski. Cajkovski from Milutinovic. He shoots and it's a

:03:57. > :04:10.goal. 1-0 to Yugoslavia. The French kick off and once again,

:04:11. > :04:12.it's Cajkovski. Cajkovski to Milutinovic. And up goes the

:04:13. > :04:25.goalkeeper and punches over the bar. Again, Yugoslavia. And, once again,

:04:26. > :04:31.this fantastic wing half Cajkovski. Cajkovski to Milutinovic. Now, he

:04:32. > :04:37.falls. And is he all right? It's all right, madam. Here he comes. Once

:04:38. > :04:47.again, Yugoslavia come away on the attack. Now a nice triangular

:04:48. > :04:50.movement on the left. And a shot. But up goes goalkeeper Remetter and

:04:51. > :04:53.clears. Now here's goalkeeper Remetter, not making mud pies in the

:04:54. > :04:57.goalmouth but rubbing sand onto his gloves. He directs his defence into

:04:58. > :05:03.position and now he crouches, awaiting a corner from the right

:05:04. > :05:21.wing. Up goes Remetter, punches away. So the score remains 1-0 at

:05:22. > :05:23.half-time and France kick off, hoping to pull back and justify thei

:05:24. > :05:40.seeding in this first-round match. But the Yugoslavian defence are

:05:41. > :05:46.playing tight and this short passing game isn't getting France anywhere.

:05:47. > :05:50.Both teams combining well but neither of them shooting as often as

:05:51. > :06:01.they might. Now, out onto the wing and a tussle with full back

:06:02. > :06:09.Stankovic. Can the winger beat him? Yes, he does. Now overcomes the

:06:10. > :06:13.centre but outcomes goalkeeper Beara, diving at the foot of a

:06:14. > :06:17.forward and clears and saves the day for Yugoslavia. So the match ends

:06:18. > :06:19.with a victory for Yugoslavia by one goal to nil and the French

:06:20. > :06:23.supporters, understandably, don't look very pleased. So to the second

:06:24. > :06:36.match, which is played in Geneva, where Brazil meet another American

:06:37. > :06:43.team, Mexico. Here's Brazil kicking off on the lighter shirts. A good

:06:44. > :06:46.ground pass right onto the right wing and Brazil quickly away on the

:06:47. > :06:53.attack. A shot but saved. Another shot through the full back's legs.

:06:54. > :06:57.Down goes the goalkeeper and comes up well. Throws out to his wing

:06:58. > :07:00.half. Now here comes the first goal. Watch it, a beautiful shot. And down

:07:01. > :07:12.goes the goalkeeper but he can't keep it out and it's 1-0 through

:07:13. > :07:16.Baltazar. Another one, Didi this time. 2-0 for Brazil.

:07:17. > :07:21.And there's the third, the third scored by Pinheiro, who also, within

:07:22. > :07:24.a few minutes, and the fourth So too half-time with Brazil's leading

:07:25. > :07:42.quite comfortably, by four goals to nil.

:07:43. > :07:46.And one wonders, perhaps, if the Mexicans ought not to stick to

:07:47. > :07:48.bull-fighting. This is the king of the dribble Julinho. And he adds

:07:49. > :08:02.goal number five. Once again, Julinho comes through

:08:03. > :08:08.and shoots but this time the goalkeeper saves and the match ends

:08:09. > :08:11.5-0. And now meet young Marco, a little Swiss boy and his brother,

:08:12. > :08:15.sitting here listening to a report on one of the matches from the radio

:08:16. > :08:18.And nothing quite catches his imagination like these 22 men

:08:19. > :08:28.fighting out on a football field in Switzerland. And so to another first

:08:29. > :08:31.round match. Germany in white shirts meeting Turkey. The Germans, who are

:08:32. > :08:34.unseeded, must win if their clever strategic plan is to succeed.

:08:35. > :08:54.Turkey, on the other hand, will be glad of a draw. Here are the Turks

:08:55. > :08:57.coming through the German defence and it's Turkey who open the

:08:58. > :09:00.scoring. 1-0 through Suat. The Germans seemed nervous at the

:09:01. > :09:03.opening. They settle down. That is Schaefer calling for the ball. He

:09:04. > :09:08.comes through. Schaefer, he shoots a goal. 1-1. Far into the second half,

:09:09. > :09:17.the score remains Turkey 1-1 Germany. Now, a goal. 2-1 for

:09:18. > :09:23.Germany and the scorer there is Klodt. 2-1 and now the Germans, in

:09:24. > :09:28.the closing stages, really get on top of the tiring Turks. Another

:09:29. > :09:35.goal and this time it's Ottmar Walter who scores.

:09:36. > :09:43.And it seems that goal number four isn't long to be denied. Ball comes

:09:44. > :09:47.out onto the right wing. A centre to Fritz Walter. He shoots but straight

:09:48. > :09:53.into the hands of the Turkish goalkeeper.

:09:54. > :09:58.And there's goal number four. It wasn't to be denied. Morlock who

:09:59. > :10:05.scored and that's the final score. Germany 4-1 Turkey. And two points

:10:06. > :10:08.safely in the bag for Germany. But at this time of the year,

:10:09. > :10:11.Switzerland is not only a footballer's paradise - with its

:10:12. > :10:15.lakes and its mountains rising up like vast grandstands along the

:10:16. > :10:35.shores of these lakes, as even and inviting as any stadium.

:10:36. > :10:46.This is the lovely little town of Lucerne on the shores of Lake

:10:47. > :10:49.Lucerne. And here the two British teams who have come through to these

:10:50. > :10:53.final rounds have made their headquarters - the Scots and the

:10:54. > :10:56.English players. And here's a familiar face, of course, Billy

:10:57. > :10:59.Wright, captain of Wolverhampton Wanderers, captain of England. And

:11:00. > :11:03.even in the rest camp, the ball isn't forgotten. The players toss it

:11:04. > :11:04.from hand-to-hand, except one who sleeps and dreams, perhaps, of

:11:05. > :11:09.victory. So to England's first match, where

:11:10. > :11:20.they meet Belgium. The referee here is a German,

:11:21. > :11:31.Schmetzler. From the kick-off, it's England on

:11:32. > :11:36.the attack. And here's Lofthouse going through. He shoots but against

:11:37. > :11:41.the side netting. And now it's Belgium on the attack. And they

:11:42. > :11:45.score. 1-0 for Belgium through Anoul. This isn't what the English

:11:46. > :11:49.spectators had hoped for. England have had a disastrous tour in

:11:50. > :11:57.Yugoslavia and in Hungary and the British supporters were perhaps a

:11:58. > :12:00.little apprehensive. But here's the great old wizard of drivel from

:12:01. > :12:03.Blackpool, Stanley Matthews, on the right wing. And while he plays,

:12:04. > :12:07.there's hope for England. Over comes the centre but not this time. Headed

:12:08. > :12:10.away by a Belgian defender and its Belgium again on the attack, still

:12:11. > :12:13.leading 1-0. Again, Matthews. A lovely pass through. Tommy Taylor.

:12:14. > :12:23.Lofthouse. Lofthouse shoots and it's in the net. 1-1.

:12:24. > :12:28.And this is a bit more the sort of thing England supporters have been

:12:29. > :12:29.expecting. And you'll notice there's room for double figures on that

:12:30. > :12:37.scoreboard. Oh, and a lovely header there from

:12:38. > :12:44.Lofthouse. A beautiful goal. One of the best goals of the match. Down he

:12:45. > :12:47.went and into the corner of the net, past the goalkeeper Gernaey. Now

:12:48. > :12:51.here's Tommy Taylor with a chance but he wastes it. But Broadis is on

:12:52. > :12:55.the mark in the second half, just inside, off the corner of the post.

:12:56. > :12:59.3-1 for England and it looks as though the game's all over. But the

:13:00. > :13:03.Belgians are not to be beaten as easily as that. Back they come onto

:13:04. > :13:13.the attack. The English defence rests and there it is. 3-2.

:13:14. > :13:23.Through Coppens, the Belgians make it 3-3. Gernaey says there and in

:13:24. > :13:31.extra time, there's one goal each and the match ends in a draw. 4-4.

:13:32. > :13:36.The officials and players from Austria, one of the strongest sides

:13:37. > :13:43.in Europe, are welcomed in their training camp at Baden, near Zurich.

:13:44. > :13:48.Goalkeeper Schmied turns and looks at the motto on the wall. "Play fair

:13:49. > :13:53.- it isn't hard," it says, and it's a good motto for any international

:13:54. > :13:57.sport. Here is the trainer and selector, and Probst receiving a

:13:58. > :14:01.little massage. The Austrians don't believe in doing things by halves.

:14:02. > :14:04.They have plenty of balls for practice. Here's Hanappi, a name

:14:05. > :14:10.well-known to opponents from Austria and Scotland. A real juggler with

:14:11. > :14:16.the ball, this man, with head and feet. Full back Happel. Centre half

:14:17. > :14:23.Ocwirk, one of the best in the world, a wonderful ballplayer in any

:14:24. > :14:27.position. Here's young Marco again. He's really excited now as he hears

:14:28. > :14:33.these reports coming in. He wonders how much a ticket for the final will

:14:34. > :14:42.be. There you are - too much. Never mind, Marco. So to Zurich, where

:14:43. > :14:53.Austria meet Czechoslovakia. Austria have already beaten Scotland 1-0.

:14:54. > :15:02.From the kick-off, it's Austria on the attack in the white shirts.

:15:03. > :15:05.Watch now, a lovely long pass from Ocwirk. Onto the foot of Stojaspal,

:15:06. > :15:19.overhead of the goalkeeper and into the net. 1-0 for Austria. And

:15:20. > :15:24.through comes one of the men of the match, who will score a hat-trick

:15:25. > :15:55.the first of them from the And that one is saved. Lovely shot!

:15:56. > :16:14.That is the third golfer Austria. And there it is, 4-0. A hat-trick

:16:15. > :16:22.from the wing half Probst. Now, here is someone injured. Who is it? It is

:16:23. > :16:26.Stojaspal, the scorer of the first goal. Sufficiently badly injured to

:16:27. > :16:38.be carried off, but he recovers and quickly resumes. There is a fifth

:16:39. > :16:43.goal, and it ends 5-0. Next, Uruguay, the holders of the World

:16:44. > :16:47.Cup, meet Scotland. Uruguay beat Czechoslovakia 2-0 in their first

:16:48. > :16:50.game, and Scotland lost a tough match against Austria. So they will

:16:51. > :16:56.have a very stiff job in holding these fine Uruguayans. Scotland make

:16:57. > :17:00.the going in the opening movements, but after that, it is all Uruguay.

:17:01. > :17:25.There is the first goal, the beautiful shot. And there is the

:17:26. > :17:29.second, this time from Miguez. That takes us to half-time. In the second

:17:30. > :17:35.half, the Scottish defence is completely overrun by these

:17:36. > :17:41.wonderful Uruguayans, Everyman ballplayer, and every man taking

:17:42. > :17:48.part. That one was saved, but three goals are added in five minutes.

:17:49. > :18:49.There is the first one, from Borges. Now, the outside right,

:18:50. > :18:56.goal. So, 6-0 for Uruguay. Borges has got his hat-trick, and there is

:18:57. > :19:02.still another to come. There it is. Mexico, who lost 5-0 to Brazil, and

:19:03. > :19:03.France, who were beaten by a single goal against Yugoslavia in the

:19:04. > :19:16.inaugural match. It is a tough struggle for both of

:19:17. > :19:22.these teams, each yet to win a point. And there is the first goal,

:19:23. > :19:38.a goal for France, scored by outside left Vincent. Free kick just

:19:39. > :19:50.scrambled away by the goalkeeper for France.

:19:51. > :20:07.But this is not Mexico's lucky day. An own goal puts them two behind.

:20:08. > :20:17.After that, you might expect the Mexicans to give up the ghost

:20:18. > :20:28.altogether, but they fight back. A good shot, 2-1, and hope yet for

:20:29. > :20:38.Mexico. They get a second, to equalise, and take us into extra

:20:39. > :20:48.time. Now, watch. Just past the post. And again it comes, shot after

:20:49. > :20:53.shot from the French. Watch this carefully, is it handball or not?

:20:54. > :20:57.The French say yes, Mexicans say no. The Spanish referee must decide. He

:20:58. > :21:13.points to the spot. Il Divo France in extra time. Kopa Takes it, easily

:21:14. > :21:21.beats the goalkeeper, and France are the winners. This is the lovely

:21:22. > :21:25.setting of the Brazilians' camp. It is time to look at letters from

:21:26. > :21:34.home, as the trainer distributes the letters. Letters for the stars whose

:21:35. > :21:47.activities in this distant country followed so closely at home.

:21:48. > :21:55.The Brazilians leave nothing to chance, they have even brought their

:21:56. > :22:02.own cook with them to make sure that the diet is exactly what they would

:22:03. > :22:04.get at home. And they are also remembering the Church of their

:22:05. > :22:12.country at home, even though they are so far away in Switzerland.

:22:13. > :22:38.Now, Yugoslavia versus Brazil, the referee is from Scotland.

:22:39. > :22:52.Plenty of excitement, but so far, no goals. Now, Yugoslavia go on the

:22:53. > :22:56.attack. A shot from 18 yards, and into the net! It is the outsiders,

:22:57. > :23:16.Yugoslavia! This is against the form book.

:23:17. > :23:22.And there is the equaliser, it had to come, and it was Didi who

:23:23. > :23:31.scored, to level it up before half-time. In the second half, both

:23:32. > :23:34.teams played copybook football. Brazilians are the artists and the

:23:35. > :23:45.Yugoslavs technicians, not perhaps so, the gated and perhaps not so

:23:46. > :23:48.artistic. But try as they might, neither side can score. And so they

:23:49. > :24:02.both go through to the quarterfinals.

:24:03. > :24:09.Marco is keeping a close watch on the teams who will get through to

:24:10. > :24:22.the quarterfinals. He scans all the newspapers. Now, here are the

:24:23. > :24:26.Germans in their training camp, and Walter is discussing the tactics for

:24:27. > :24:34.this match. For this match, a record crowd is packed into the centre

:24:35. > :24:36.Jacob Stadium. The Germans are maybe not too happy when they see that

:24:37. > :24:41.their team lines up with seven reserve players. They wonder why

:24:42. > :24:47.Herberger is not fielding what could be the Germans' best side. Herberger

:24:48. > :24:52.has plans of his own, and they will be unfolded as the tournament

:24:53. > :25:02.addresses. In the meantime, it is all Hungary. They are very quickly

:25:03. > :25:16.three goals up. Playing the sort of football that has brought them four

:25:17. > :25:22.years without defeat in Europe. However, the Germans hit back, and

:25:23. > :25:34.there is one goal away from the deficit of three, and so to

:25:35. > :25:39.half-time. And Germany, with seven reserve players, not too badly off

:25:40. > :25:47.to be only 3-1 down, thanks to that goal from Pfaff.

:25:48. > :25:53.So, they come out again after half-time, neither side looking to

:25:54. > :26:01.happy with their performance to date. But in the second half, it is

:26:02. > :26:22.the Hungarians who call the tune, and a Hungarian Rhapsody it is.

:26:23. > :26:36.As you see, anything that they can get in the way for the Germans, to

:26:37. > :26:41.stop these terrific Hungarians. And so the goals go into the net one

:26:42. > :26:45.after the other. One cannot but sympathise with goalkeeper

:26:46. > :26:48.Kwiatkowski, with number 22 on his back, playing in his first

:26:49. > :26:57.international, and here's to concede eight goals.

:26:58. > :27:07.But now, what is this costume none other than Puskas, the famous

:27:08. > :27:12.captain, getting injured. His left angles Wells, and it is going to put

:27:13. > :27:22.him out of some of these matches in the World Cup. -- his left ankle

:27:23. > :27:27.swells. But in this match, it seems that it makes no difference. With

:27:28. > :27:30.only ten men, the Hungarians go on and on, playing like the wonderful

:27:31. > :27:50.football machine they have proved themselves to be.

:27:51. > :28:01.At least Rahn gets one back, and the match finally ends 8-34 Hungary, but

:28:02. > :28:26.there will be another meeting yet to come. -- 8-3 for Hungary.

:28:27. > :28:34.A glorious setting for any form of sport, and to this town, 18,000 fans

:28:35. > :28:39.have come from Italy to see their side play Belgium. The Italians are

:28:40. > :28:42.in white shorts. Following their 4-4 draw with England, the Belgians are

:28:43. > :28:46.plainly a power to be reckoned with. The Italians, who have already

:28:47. > :29:12.lost to Switzerland, must win this match. They are got off to a good

:29:13. > :29:22.start. Pandolfini Shoots, and there is the first goal for Italy.

:29:23. > :29:38.Over onto the left wing, it comes in, and a lovely diving header! 2-0

:29:39. > :29:46.for Italy! Is there a shot coming? It comes, he goes up and misses it!

:29:47. > :29:59.But the ball hits the woodwork. A bit of luck there for Gernaey. But

:30:00. > :30:06.this time it goes in. 3-0 against Belgium.

:30:07. > :30:19.Corner from the left. And once again, Galli finds the net. But it

:30:20. > :30:23.does not seem fair that these plucky Belgians should lose by 4-0, and the

:30:24. > :30:34.crowd are pleased when they see them get their consolation goal.

:30:35. > :30:46.So do the least attended match of the tournament, the match between

:30:47. > :30:49.Korea and Turkey. For the Koreans to make their long journey by plane, it

:30:50. > :30:55.has cost them more than ?10,000, and in return they have had a 9-0

:30:56. > :30:57.drubbing from Hungary, and now it looks as though they are going to

:30:58. > :31:17.get similar treatment from Turkey. In days when international sport has

:31:18. > :31:22.become so important, it is pleasing to see the sporting manner in which

:31:23. > :31:29.these Koreans take their defeat. It is a lesson for all those who are

:31:30. > :31:33.defeated in this series. And while others sleep I think perhaps we

:31:34. > :31:39.might reckon up the balance sheet. Through to the quarterfinals so far

:31:40. > :31:44.are Brazil, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Uruguay, Austria and England. Still

:31:45. > :31:48.to play, Germany and Turkey and Italy and Switzerland to decide who

:31:49. > :31:55.will occupy the two remaining places. For the others, they must go

:31:56. > :31:59.home. Korea, to take home with them a record of no goals for and 16

:32:00. > :32:15.against. Marco, like so many young boys all

:32:16. > :32:20.over the world, his mind runs on foot wall, football, football. But

:32:21. > :32:24.it also runs away far from his home, to the final. But his mother

:32:25. > :32:32.understands, as all mothers understand, and she knows what is in

:32:33. > :32:43.little Marco's heart. He and his brother get out the map and they see

:32:44. > :32:47.how far it is to Bern for the final. Too far, says his brother - by the

:32:48. > :32:50.time you get there, they will be playing in the final of the next

:32:51. > :32:57.World Cup! That is handball! What is this? It seems that young Marco

:32:58. > :33:08.might yet get to the final. Germany this time are playing in

:33:09. > :33:12.unaccustomed dark shirts and meet Turkey once again. The Germans have

:33:13. > :33:27.the choice and Turkey kick off. Turkey opened the scoring in the

:33:28. > :33:37.previous much that they played but this time they didn't have quite the

:33:38. > :33:44.same success. It Eckel putting his forwards away. Schaeffer in the

:33:45. > :33:59.centre. Ottmar Walter shoots into the goal. 1-04 Germany. -- 1-0 to

:34:00. > :34:03.Germany. Turkey again kick off. Now here's the outside left a Schaeffer

:34:04. > :34:05.coming through. He should so quickly that we hardly had time to see it so

:34:06. > :34:23.let's slow it down and see it again. 2-0 to Germany and there doesn't

:34:24. > :34:31.seem to be much sign of Turkish delight. But here is compensation

:34:32. > :34:36.for them. Most are far ahead, the goalkeeper gets his hand to the ball

:34:37. > :34:47.but can't prevent it from getting to the net. Here's a chance for Eckel.

:34:48. > :34:51.He shoots, it in, it's in, but at the last minute, the Turkish centre

:34:52. > :34:58.half gets his foot to the ball and clears. But that's in. A good goal.

:34:59. > :35:32.35 and -- 3-1 through Morlock. And in a few seconds, the fifth,

:35:33. > :35:36.added this time by Fritz Walter. And now right from the edge of the 18

:35:37. > :35:41.yard area, another goal, Morlock again, his third in this match. 6-1

:35:42. > :36:06.to Germany now. There's some compensation for the

:36:07. > :36:10.Turks. After Schaeffer had added the seventh, they got one goal, anyway,

:36:11. > :36:21.to add to their first, making the score seven - to -- 7 - 2. These are

:36:22. > :36:26.smart men are the Italian national team at their headquarters at Vevey

:36:27. > :36:29.in French Switzerland. On the extreme right, you'll see the

:36:30. > :36:40.unmistakable curly head of Boniperti. Now here's a Silvio

:36:41. > :36:48.Piola, a famous veteran in Italian football circles. And so a spot of

:36:49. > :36:52.relaxation off the field to make sure that the players are keyed up

:36:53. > :36:59.and right up to concert pitch once played actually begins. -- play

:37:00. > :37:12.actually begins. MUSIC PLAYS

:37:13. > :37:19.and now a trio of famous names in modern Italian football circles. But

:37:20. > :37:24.the time for relaxation is over. There's just enough time to put

:37:25. > :37:28.one's signature to an autograph and then the serious work again. This

:37:29. > :37:34.time, they're off on the coach for the replay against Switzerland.

:37:35. > :37:36.35,000 spectators packed into the stadium at Barden to see this match

:37:37. > :38:02.against the home country. -- Baden. Now it's number 14 pushing the ball

:38:03. > :38:05.forward. Hugi shoots. 1-02 Switzerland. Understandably, the

:38:06. > :38:15.home supporters are jubilant. The score stays at 1-0 until half-time.

:38:16. > :38:21.Over the bar and a corner on the right wing. Over from the right

:38:22. > :38:29.comes the ball. Into the net goes the ball. To -04 Switzerland. -- 2-0

:38:30. > :38:43.two Switzerland. 2-1. But the Swiss are not shaken.

:38:44. > :38:53.Instead of the equaliser comes a third goal for Switzerland. There it

:38:54. > :38:57.is and Hugi is the scorer. Now he squares the ball, along the ball. On

:38:58. > :39:06.his mark and into the net goes the ball. So with a final score 4-1,

:39:07. > :39:10.Switzerland have qualified to meet Germany in the quarterfinals and

:39:11. > :39:19.there's no holding back the spectators. Except one of them!

:39:20. > :39:29.Time, they say, flies and so also does one young man, who is

:39:30. > :39:33.interested in the final. How much for a ticket in the final? I have

:39:34. > :39:58.enough and here is the ticket. Now, having bought the ticket, Marco

:39:59. > :40:02.has to buy his ticket to travel to Bern and walks proudly into the

:40:03. > :40:10.office to purchase this. Meanwhile, his mother is looking for Marco.

:40:11. > :40:16.Where is he? Oh, he's gone to Bern. What's this? A ticket to Bern costs

:40:17. > :40:22.more than Marco thought, more money than he has. And so his streams of

:40:23. > :40:30.going to the final are dashed. And not only his but those of many

:40:31. > :40:34.teams, too. And so to the quarterfinals. Every

:40:35. > :40:38.match now more thrilling, more dramatic, more closely fought than

:40:39. > :40:42.the last. This is England versus Uruguay and England must hope to

:40:43. > :40:46.recover some of the reputation she has lost in previous matches abroad.

:40:47. > :40:58.But Uruguay are quickly on the attack. The ball goes across to the

:40:59. > :41:02.opposite wing. England are one down with five minutes gone in the first

:41:03. > :41:09.half. But Lofthouse forces the equaliser.

:41:10. > :41:24.The ball comes to Lofthouse, into the corner of the net. 1-1. Clearly

:41:25. > :41:30.enough. A free kick for Uruguay and it looked like all in wrestling!

:41:31. > :41:44.Safely kicked. Shot but well over the bar.

:41:45. > :41:51.However, what they missed by their free kick, the Uruguay team make up

:41:52. > :42:09.for in a long shot by their veteran captain. 2-1.

:42:10. > :42:19.Now it's 3-1. What a wonderful footballer this man is. ?25,000

:42:20. > :42:22.worth of footballer, or at least that's what Milan paid for him

:42:23. > :42:27.during this competition. But there's still Stanley Matthews for England.

:42:28. > :42:33.Watch him in slow motion, baiting his man. Which way will he go?

:42:34. > :42:42.Baiting two men, pushing a pass back along the ground to Tom Finney.

:42:43. > :42:47.Finney pushes the ball across. Out comes the ball again. Another shot.

:42:48. > :42:56.It's blocked. This time over the line but this is so complicated. Let

:42:57. > :43:02.us see it once again in slow motion. There is the first shot, blocked.

:43:03. > :43:10.Again, Tom Finney shoots and this time over the line and into the net.

:43:11. > :43:15.So England have pulled up. Re-2. -- three high and too. Can England

:43:16. > :43:26.force the equaliser? The game is getting rougher. Out

:43:27. > :43:34.comes the goalkeeper to see what the trouble is and out comes the referee

:43:35. > :43:37.from Vienna. The referee clears the field and brings things under

:43:38. > :43:44.control again and so they fight on. England after the equaliser, Uruguay

:43:45. > :43:51.trying to clinch the game. And clinch it they do. 4 - 2, and

:43:52. > :43:58.England make their exit from the World Cup.

:43:59. > :44:10.Once again, the Swiss team have settled down and set up their

:44:11. > :44:12.training camp. Enough time for sitting down. It's time to be out on

:44:13. > :44:24.the pitch and practising. And here is some practice at

:44:25. > :44:29.shooting into goal but in goal is not the regular keeper but the

:44:30. > :44:32.outside left. It is important in such matters as these that you

:44:33. > :44:38.should have a good reserve goalkeeper in case of injury at a

:44:39. > :44:42.crucial moment. It might mean the difference between victory and

:44:43. > :44:46.defeat. Every nation has its own method of training. But the Swiss,

:44:47. > :44:47.remembering perhaps a famous predecessor of theirs, turn their

:44:48. > :44:59.hand to archery. So the scene changes to laws aren't,

:45:00. > :45:07.where the home country meet Austria in the quarterfinal. The Austrians

:45:08. > :45:15.are in white shirts. -- Lausanne. Switzerland score first. The scorer

:45:16. > :45:18.makes it 1-0. Let me invite you to have a pencil and notebook ready if

:45:19. > :45:28.you want to keep track of the scorers. 2-0 there is Hugi. And

:45:29. > :45:32.again it's Hugi. The Austrians must be asking themselves what has hit

:45:33. > :45:39.them. Their reaction to this is, what the Swiss can do, we can do,

:45:40. > :45:50.and they start to get back. Wagner shoots and that's the first four

:45:51. > :46:04.Austria. And again, this time it is a Korner who shoots and scores.

:46:05. > :46:05.Pre-2. -- 3-2. Now, Wagner, and there is the equaliser. Who will be

:46:06. > :46:20.the next to score? Will it be the Swiss? No, again, it

:46:21. > :46:24.is the Austrians, and this time it is right into the corner of the net

:46:25. > :46:34.by Ocwirk, a beautiful shot, right along the ground. And now, Korner

:46:35. > :46:37.again. Austria have scored five goals in five minutes. But the Swiss

:46:38. > :46:50.have hit back again through Hugi. 5-4. Now, a penalty for Austria. But

:46:51. > :46:58.oh, dear, Korner shoots wide, and so, the game comes to half-time.

:46:59. > :47:08.Now, it is danger man Wagner again who scores, 6-4 to Austria. And

:47:09. > :47:19.again, Hugi, 6-5! What will be the result of this match?!

:47:20. > :47:30.To put the final nail in the Swiss coffin, 7-5, and that is it, Austria

:47:31. > :47:33.are through to the semifinals. But what about Marco? If you thought

:47:34. > :47:44.that he had given up, you are mistaken. If he cannot go by train,

:47:45. > :47:49.then he will go by boat. But Mark Aluko -- but Marco, do you know how

:47:50. > :48:19.long this lake is? Well, Marco, you will be finding out very shortly.

:48:20. > :48:25.But you do not get anywhere in life without a bit of luck, either on the

:48:26. > :48:28.football field or on the lake. And there are still some sympathetic

:48:29. > :48:38.people about who are willing to lend a hand at a time when it is needed.

:48:39. > :48:49.So, Marco, you are a little nearer your destination. Careful now,

:48:50. > :49:15.Marco, don't get too excited. Careful! Oh, dear, never mind.

:49:16. > :49:26.I wonder who lives here? It is none other than Charlie Chaplin, a famous

:49:27. > :49:32.player in his time, but on the screen, not on the football field.

:49:33. > :49:36.But what about the football matches? Well, for the moment, there is

:49:37. > :49:37.nothing happening, so we have time to take a stroll through the lovely

:49:38. > :50:13.town of Geneva. So to the stadium, where Germany

:50:14. > :50:16.meets Yugoslavia. In this match, the experts have made the Yugoslavs the

:50:17. > :50:26.favourites. Germans, in white shirts, kicked off. Trainer

:50:27. > :50:29.Herberger does not look too happy, but the Germans get off to a good

:50:30. > :50:38.start, when the Yugoslavs present them with a goal. It is Horvat who

:50:39. > :50:47.heads into his own goal, and so Germany take a lead. But now, the

:50:48. > :50:50.Yugoslavs hit back, and it is goalkeeper Turek making a diving

:50:51. > :50:54.save to keep them out, and that is not the only saviour makes in this

:50:55. > :51:05.match. There he goes again, diving at the feet of an advancing forward.

:51:06. > :51:12.And again, Turek! And this time, it is Kohlmeyer heading off the line.

:51:13. > :51:23.And again, a wall of German shirts saves the Yugoslavian goal. Four

:51:24. > :51:28.minutes to go, and now, Rahn, he shoots, and in off the post! And

:51:29. > :51:48.that is 2-0 to Germany, and so the score remains.

:51:49. > :51:57.This is where the Hungarians are training. Other countries, other

:51:58. > :52:02.customs, and the Hungarians train at hurdle football.

:52:03. > :52:16.You will see here very famous players, like Bozsik. And there goes

:52:17. > :52:27.Puskas, still limping from the injury he received. He is forced to

:52:28. > :52:31.be a spectator. And in the Hungarian camp, things are not quite perhaps

:52:32. > :52:41.as happy as they might be. There are important matches to come, and it is

:52:42. > :52:46.vital that every man should be fit. Now, to the quarterfinal between

:52:47. > :52:50.Hungary and Brazil. 50,000 onlookers have packed into the stadium at Bern

:52:51. > :52:57.to see this match. The Hungarians kicked off. It is a match between

:52:58. > :53:01.the crack European side and one of the outstanding South American

:53:02. > :53:04.sides. But it is the Hungarians who open the score, and there it is,

:53:05. > :53:26.into the net, scored by Hidegkuti. Again and again, the Hungarians

:53:27. > :53:39.storm the Brazilian goal. Here is a shot, and it is full-back

:53:40. > :54:06.Santos who clears off the line. But in this mood, they are not to be

:54:07. > :54:15.stopped. It is Kocsis who scored that one. 2-0 to Hungary. But now,

:54:16. > :54:19.here is a chance for Brazil. Into the penalty area they come, down

:54:20. > :54:23.goes a player, and what will the referee decide whenever there is

:54:24. > :54:27.only one decision, the referee points quite rightly to the spot.

:54:28. > :54:48.Now, who will take the kick? It is Santos. 2-1.

:54:49. > :54:55.And 2-1 it is when the second half starts. The paste is not slacken,

:54:56. > :55:05.the tackling gets harder and keener. -- the pace does not slacken. Now,

:55:06. > :55:17.another penalty, this time at the other end.

:55:18. > :55:28.Lantos shoots, and makes no mistake. Hungary lead by 3-1. But Brazil are

:55:29. > :55:34.not out of it, as Julinho scores, reducing Hungary's lead to a single

:55:35. > :55:41.goal. But the game is getting rougher. And soon, referee Arthur

:55:42. > :55:59.Ellis is forced to take a hand, and he sends from the field Santos and

:56:00. > :56:01.Bozsik. So, with ten men each, the battle is renewed, and still there

:56:02. > :56:18.is no telling which way it will go. And there it is, it is Hugi who

:56:19. > :56:31.decides in the end that Hungary will get to the semifinal. 4-2, the final

:56:32. > :56:36.score. Here on this lake, the Uruguayans have set up their

:56:37. > :56:41.headquarters. A game of table tennis between the halfback and the

:56:42. > :56:44.goalkeeper. But some of the others, a few words of advice from trainer

:56:45. > :57:02.Lopez. But just now and again, even the

:57:03. > :57:07.Uruguayans like a moment or two away from football, and when they do,

:57:08. > :57:23.they go down to the water. Here in the boat is Borges, with Maspoli,

:57:24. > :57:29.the goalkeeper doing the rowing. Meanwhile, our young friend, having

:57:30. > :57:33.come as far as he could by boat, has taken to hitchhiking. So far it does

:57:34. > :57:42.not look as though he is having much success. Here you are, Marco,

:57:43. > :57:52.someone has stopped for you. No, not a lift. But never mind, at least

:57:53. > :57:57.there is a radio. We will leave Marco listening to the radio and

:57:58. > :58:03.travel to Lausanne, where a Hungary meet Uruguay in the semifinal, in

:58:04. > :58:08.pouring rain, before 40,000 spectators. The first Hungarian

:58:09. > :58:15.attack brings a goal from Czibor. 1-0! And this is a Hungary team

:58:16. > :58:20.playing of course without Puskas. But Uruguay are also handicapped,

:58:21. > :58:26.because they are without their great veteran brains of the side and

:58:27. > :58:56.centre half Varela. The Hungarians attack, but the

:58:57. > :59:00.Uruguayan defence holds out. And so it goes to half-time. Yes, your

:59:01. > :59:10.favourites may be out of luck, Marco, but you are in luck. Here is

:59:11. > :59:12.a lift for you. But oh, dear, what is this? It is going in the wrong

:59:13. > :59:24.direction. Still, don't despair, sooner or

:59:25. > :59:30.later, something will turn up. In the meantime, we must go back to

:59:31. > :59:35.Lausanne, where the Uruguayans kick off in the second half. But it is

:59:36. > :59:42.quickly Hungary once again on the attack. The attack develops down the

:59:43. > :59:50.right wing. Overcomes the centre, up into the air, and into the net, and

:59:51. > :59:59.the scorer was Hidegkuti. 2-0, and it looks as though this is all over.

:00:00. > :00:05.This time something clicks and the Uruguayans begin to pull back. 2-1

:00:06. > :00:07.and it looks as though the Uruguayans have a chance after all.

:00:08. > :00:19.He shoots again into the goal. 2-2. The excitement is too much for one

:00:20. > :00:29.player, who has to receive some attention from his trainer.

:00:30. > :00:37.And there was a lucky one. Another shot and, again, the ball is saved.

:00:38. > :00:41.The game has gone into extra time and it begins to look as though, for

:00:42. > :00:50.the first time, the Hungarians are facing defeat. But even in defeat,

:00:51. > :00:54.there's coccyx and here he is. It seems as though hungry are going to

:00:55. > :00:59.pull this much into the fire. -- there's Kocsis. Once again Kocsis is

:01:00. > :01:01.there and it's for - to so hungry have won through into the final of

:01:02. > :01:14.the World Cup. -- 4-2. Who hungry will meet in the final is

:01:15. > :01:18.decided here, and fighting for the honour our Germany in the dark

:01:19. > :01:29.shirts and Austria in white. -- Hungary.

:01:30. > :01:46.Both sides are naturally nervous at the kick-off but gradually, play

:01:47. > :01:50.settles down. Now Fritz Walter. To Rann, to Ottmar Walter. And the ball

:01:51. > :02:05.is cleared. The Austrians on the attack. A shot

:02:06. > :02:18.but over the bar. It's a corner, though. Too wrecked at sheet.

:02:19. > :02:28.Overcomes the corner, overheads. -- Tourek touched it.

:02:29. > :02:38.Fritz Walter to Schaffer. Schaefer shoots and it's a goal.

:02:39. > :02:51.1-04 Germany against Austria. A foul. A foul on Wagner and the

:02:52. > :03:01.referee gives a free kick. It's just outside the penalty area. A wall of

:03:02. > :03:05.players with a gap and covering the gap is goalkeeper Tourek, and he

:03:06. > :03:11.clears. Still 1-0 to Germany. So it goes to half-time. Now Germany

:03:12. > :03:13.attack. Then Austria. Again, Germany. So the play goes from

:03:14. > :03:32.end-to-end. A corner. Fritz Walter takes it. Up

:03:33. > :03:37.goes Morlock, meet it with his head up, into the net. Where was the

:03:38. > :03:43.goalkeeper? Why didn't he jump for that? We'll see it again in slow

:03:44. > :03:47.motion. You see the goalkeeper stands flat-footed on the line.

:03:48. > :03:58.Certainly, I think, we can put that one to his account.

:03:59. > :04:14.But now it's Austria hitting back. Wagner beats one. Beat two men.

:04:15. > :04:18.Passes out onto the wing. It's headed away but not for long. Into

:04:19. > :04:33.the net it goes and that makes it 2-1. Props to has scored. --

:04:34. > :04:44.Slow motion shows you how Rahn beat his man, but another man, brings the

:04:45. > :04:48.ball under control. Now rolls the ball into the centre and there goes

:04:49. > :04:53.the ball but not into the net. Down goes the goalkeeper and saves. But

:04:54. > :05:00.there is a penalty and from it, Fritz Walter has scored. Let us see

:05:01. > :05:06.it again in slow motion. The goalkeeper dives the wrong way, the

:05:07. > :05:13.mark of a good penalty taker. The scored now 3-1, and 63,000

:05:14. > :05:18.spectators wild with enthusiasm. Another corner and another goal, a

:05:19. > :05:22.family goal that time. Fritz Walter took the corner and with his head

:05:23. > :05:25.goes Ottmar Walter to take the ball with the net. -- put the ball in the

:05:26. > :05:40.net. Now an injury. It's Fritz Walter. He

:05:41. > :05:48.is hurt and up comes the referee to see what is the matter. Here's

:05:49. > :05:53.Herberger coming on to have a look as well and the Austrian trainer

:05:54. > :05:58.looking on as well. Another penalty. It must be, surely. Fritz Walter

:05:59. > :06:03.brought down in the penalty area. Yes, it must be a penalty. The

:06:04. > :06:08.referee places the ball on the spot and Fritz himself takes it. He shot

:06:09. > :06:17.the other way this time and although the goalkeeper dived, he couldn't

:06:18. > :06:23.stop it. 5-14 Germany. -- 5-1 to Germany.

:06:24. > :06:30.Now Morlock has the ball. He passes to Ottmar Walter. Walter shoots and

:06:31. > :06:40.it's a goal. 6-1 to Germany. Now we'll have time to see some of

:06:41. > :06:49.the closing exchanges but there will be no more goals. 6-1 it is and 6-1

:06:50. > :06:52.it remains. Germany have been Austria and so they qualified to go

:06:53. > :07:24.through into the final, where they will meet Hungary.

:07:25. > :07:30.Now we'll go back and see what's happened to Marco. He hasn't managed

:07:31. > :07:38.to get a lift so now he's going to try another approach.

:07:39. > :07:44.He attempts to help the drivers who are passing through on their way.

:07:45. > :07:50.But this doesn't get him anywhere, either.

:07:51. > :08:41.Now Marco resorts to underhand dealings to see if that will bring

:08:42. > :08:42.him any better fortune. But no, with dealings like that he has even less

:08:43. > :09:05.luck! Except that he isn't caught. And so, finally, he asks a girl who

:09:06. > :09:18.is travelling alone if she will give him a lift. Well, Marco, your luck

:09:19. > :09:25.really is in now, isn't it? I mean, you'll be seeing the final now,

:09:26. > :09:27.won't you? Bless you! Careful, Marco, you dropped your ticket.

:09:28. > :09:39.Marco! Now at zero, picking up the football

:09:40. > :09:42.again, the defeated semifinalists, Austria induction, and Uruguay,

:09:43. > :09:50.play-off to decide who will take third place. Uruguay kick off and

:09:51. > :09:59.skull Fino sets aside on the attack. -- Skara .

:10:00. > :10:09.But the Austrians Uruguayans have a free kick but

:10:10. > :10:11.But the Austrians ball is claimed. Austria are now

:10:12. > :10:19.playing much better than they did against Germany. Now here is Maspoli

:10:20. > :10:23.crouching in his goal expecting a shot. Positions himself well. He

:10:24. > :10:30.comes out and covers it, diving at the feet of the advancing forward.

:10:31. > :10:31.And now at the other end we see Schmied, the Austrian goalkeeper, in

:10:32. > :10:46.action. This time Maspoli isn't called

:10:47. > :10:55.upon. But that one he couldn't save. A penalty for a foul and into

:10:56. > :11:00.the net goes the ball by Stojaspal. 1-02 Austria and another chance for

:11:01. > :11:05.them. A shot but down goes Maspoli and dives and turns the ball around

:11:06. > :11:13.the post. A lovely safe. Still Austria have a single goal lead and

:11:14. > :11:20.now it's Holbeck shooting. 1-1. And so they come to half-time with the

:11:21. > :11:24.score 1-1. From the right, out comes the goalkeeper, misses and on the

:11:25. > :11:44.touchline, on the Gold line, it's Andrei to clears. -- and and . He is

:11:45. > :11:53.hurt. Up comes the referee. Soon we shall be seeing the train and here

:11:54. > :11:59.he is, applying the magic sponge. Fortunately, it

:12:00. > :12:07.he is, applying the magic sponge. That's one way of looking at it. Now

:12:08. > :12:12.This time it's through for Austria. Heading

:12:13. > :12:15.This time it's and into the net. An own goal

:12:16. > :12:19.This time it's Uruguay and so Austria lead now 2-1.

:12:20. > :12:24.This time it's Now Koerner dribbles through.

:12:25. > :12:40.This time it's one man, beats another. Now he

:12:41. > :12:43.passes to Auschwitz. Austria have made sure that the first

:12:44. > :12:44.passes to Auschwitz. Austria have places in this championship will go

:12:45. > :12:46.to European teams. places in this championship will go

:12:47. > :12:58.Uruguay, must content places in this championship will go

:12:59. > :13:10.with fourth place. The final free kick and turned over the bar by

:13:11. > :13:12.goalkeeper Maspoli. So the match ends and the FIFA President

:13:13. > :13:24.congratulates the Austrians and presents them with their well earned

:13:25. > :13:31.bronze medals. In the meantime, the Germans are preparing for the final.

:13:32. > :13:35.You see them here at their headquarters with everyone in a very

:13:36. > :13:41.good humour. There is a game of cards played by Karl Mai, Ben Hart

:13:42. > :13:45.and Eckel. And Ottmar Walter tells the goalkeeper what to do. They sign

:13:46. > :13:55.autographs. And away from the training camp,

:13:56. > :14:00.it's time for them all to go on an excursion in a boat. All of them,

:14:01. > :14:06.that is, except one. There is one place we don't see. , there he is,

:14:07. > :14:16.the trainer. I wonder what he has in mind for the in the final. -- for

:14:17. > :14:25.the hunger Aryans in the final. -- for the Hungarian team.

:14:26. > :14:40.And so to the Sunday of the final match. Business has already started

:14:41. > :14:47.in this town. They are almost giving the tickets away. But Marco has no

:14:48. > :15:40.need of a ticket. He has his safely in his pocket. Or so he thinks...

:15:41. > :15:49.Yes, Marco, your ticket is still at the Garrard. You will not get in

:15:50. > :15:52.here. I will give you a tip, there are some cars which have a special

:15:53. > :16:24.pass. Here is one. So far, so good. Now, what's this?

:16:25. > :17:00.Another official car. Well, Marco, one way or another, you

:17:01. > :17:05.have made it at last. On the day of the final Sunday, it is pouring with

:17:06. > :17:13.rain. Fritz Walter weather, they say. And trainer Herberger expresses

:17:14. > :17:21.himself well satisfied. At last, Marco is in, and now the match can

:17:22. > :17:27.begin. And here, from the underground dressing rooms, come the

:17:28. > :17:29.players. The Germans, again in their white shirts, and the Hungarians in

:17:30. > :17:48.the well-known red. The Swiss federal president welcomes

:17:49. > :18:18.the teams, and so does the honorary president of FIFA, Jules Rimet.

:18:19. > :18:24.Now, the match can begin. The English referee tosses up, and

:18:25. > :18:31.Puskas calls correctly, and has the choice of ends. The whistle goes,

:18:32. > :18:36.and Germany kicks off. The first attack comes down the right wing.

:18:37. > :18:43.Nice triangular movement. Out onto the right wing, and there is Max

:18:44. > :18:48.Morlock. It goes over the line for a corner. First blood to Germany. Here

:18:49. > :18:51.comes the corner. Over the heads of the Germans as well as the

:18:52. > :19:03.Hungarians, but somebody is going back to collect, and it is Schafer.

:19:04. > :19:20.Out comes goalkeeper Grosics. And now it is Hungary away on the

:19:21. > :19:31.attack. Here they come. Shot, saved. Puskas shoots, it is a goal! 1-0,

:19:32. > :19:35.Hungary! So, with only two or three minutes gone, it is Hungary leading

:19:36. > :19:44.by 1-0 in the final of the World Cup. And again they come on the

:19:45. > :19:47.attack. This time, up goes the ferry headed centre half Liebrich. Again

:19:48. > :19:54.they come, and it is in the net again, 2-0. It was a bad backpass by

:19:55. > :19:59.Kohlmeyer. Is this going to be a repeat of their meeting in the

:20:00. > :20:06.opening rounds? 2-0 Hungary, after just a few minutes played! But the

:20:07. > :20:12.Germans are not to be rattled. They settle down and play really

:20:13. > :20:25.wonderful football. Here they come, on the attack, with Rahn. A shot, a

:20:26. > :20:31.goal! Scored by Morlock! 2-1. Let's see it again in slow motion. You can

:20:32. > :20:33.see Morlock straining to get his foot to the ball and push it past

:20:34. > :20:48.the goalkeeper. He just gets to it and pushes it

:20:49. > :20:55.past goalkeeper Grosics. So, now, Germany only one goal behind, and

:20:56. > :21:05.fighting to equalise. Coming down the wing is Schafer. He gets his

:21:06. > :21:15.centre over. But out comes Grosics. Once again, Germany on the attack.

:21:16. > :21:23.Now, Morlock shoots, corner. Over it comes. And another corner!

:21:24. > :21:31.Up goes Rahn, and into the goal! 2-2! 2-2 in the final of the World

:21:32. > :21:44.Cup! Now, Hungary kick off, and quickly

:21:45. > :21:55.they are back on the attack. Here is a shot. No,, brought under control.

:21:56. > :22:02.And that was a lucky one for Turek. Once more, Liebrich is there with

:22:03. > :22:13.his Fairhead, as he will be so many times during this game. Grosics is

:22:14. > :22:22.there to clear away upfield. Another dangerous attack. Shot, but cleared

:22:23. > :22:27.again by Liebrich. Turek kicks upfield, Germany on the attack.

:22:28. > :22:49.Hungary hit back. The crowd really do not dare look away for one

:22:50. > :22:55.second, it is so exciting. Up those Grosics once again. He clears away

:22:56. > :22:59.upfield. And so to half-time, with some well earned refreshment in the

:23:00. > :23:05.German dressing room. Trainer Herberger has a word with one of the

:23:06. > :23:11.players. He has also got time to sign an autograph in the interval.

:23:12. > :23:23.The Germans are first out after half-time. They are closely followed

:23:24. > :23:32.by the red-shirted Hungarians. 2-2, the score, and so far there could

:23:33. > :23:38.not have been a better final. The whistle goes, and Hungary kick off.

:23:39. > :23:43.And straightaway, it is Hungary on the attack. Here they come down into

:23:44. > :23:49.the German half of the field. And there is centre half Liebrich

:23:50. > :23:56.clearing again. And when he is beaten, there is still goalkeeper

:23:57. > :24:06.Turek to save. Now, on the attack for Germany is Rahn, stopped by

:24:07. > :24:12.Lantos. Now, Hungary it back. Grosics throws it out. Coming down

:24:13. > :24:17.on the right wing is Toth. Can he turn the ball in?! This is dangerous

:24:18. > :24:25.for Germany. It is bouncing around in the penalty area. But it is

:24:26. > :24:30.eventually cleared for Germany. Once again, the Germans come through, and

:24:31. > :24:34.this really is a hectic ten minutes. If they had cracked at this moment,

:24:35. > :24:43.they might have been completely overwhelmed. There is Herberger,

:24:44. > :24:48.looking worried, and well he might at this stage. Puskas lets it go.

:24:49. > :24:53.Here is a shot. Down goes the goalkeeper. Clears off the line, why

:24:54. > :25:04.word, that was a close shave for Germany. Again, Germany called luck

:25:05. > :25:16.holds. Now, Fritz Walter. -- Germany's luck holds. Another

:25:17. > :25:23.chance, Fritz Walter... Shot by Rahn, but it is wide. Once again the

:25:24. > :25:28.ball comes to Rahn. Fritz Walter pushes it through and Rahn has

:25:29. > :25:31.another shot. But down goes the panther in the Hungarian goal and

:25:32. > :25:41.saves again just now, it is the Germans, and down goes Turek. And I

:25:42. > :25:45.think he was injured. Yes, they are rubbing his head. He must hope this

:25:46. > :25:48.is not anything serious, because an injury to a goalkeeper at this stage

:25:49. > :26:00.would be bad luck in such a fine final. Here is Rahn! Goal! The

:26:01. > :26:05.winning goal! 3-2 for Germany! And the German players cluster around

:26:06. > :26:10.Rahn to congratulate himwhat a wonderful day this must be for the

:26:11. > :26:15.squad. The winning goal in the World Cup final. But it is not over,

:26:16. > :26:25.Hungary are on the attack. Puskas! He shoots! Into the net, 3-3! But

:26:26. > :26:28.no, the players are waving, the Germans do not seem to agree with

:26:29. > :26:36.this decision. What is it then no offside. So, there is still time.

:26:37. > :26:47.Shot from Czibor, and Grosics saves again. -- Turek saves again. Germany

:26:48. > :26:52.have won. Four years these Hungarians have gone without

:26:53. > :26:55.defeat. And now it has fallen to unseeded Germany. Three weeks ago,

:26:56. > :27:04.nobody would have believed it. Here they are, winners of the World Cup,

:27:05. > :27:07.champions of the world. They ran to all sides of the ground,

:27:08. > :27:12.acknowledging the applause that they have so well earned. Thousands and

:27:13. > :27:21.thousands of spectators who have come from Germany rise to give them

:27:22. > :27:35.the ovation. Now, the team 's form up for the presentation of the Jules

:27:36. > :27:39.Rimet trophy. And it is presented to Fritz Walter, who has been the

:27:40. > :27:45.brains behind the German team. And surely no one has deserved it more,

:27:46. > :27:53.except perhaps Sepp Herberger, who planned it all and saw it through to

:27:54. > :27:59.the finish. Fritz Walter shakes hands with Jules Rimet, and now he

:28:00. > :28:04.receives the congratulations of Puskas, the captain of the beaten

:28:05. > :28:08.Hungarians. Beaten but by no means disgraced in this World Cup final.

:28:09. > :28:14.And so, the World Cup 1954 comes to an end. And Germany, by beating

:28:15. > :28:22.Hungary 3-2 in a wonderful final, are now holders of the World Cup.

:28:23. > :28:31.GERMAN NATIONAL ANTHEM PLAYS.
