:04:13. > :04:19.Well, I'm a nice guy remember. ready? Do I need the earphones?

:05:34. > :05:38.worry about my knee. Where that bar is is actually taller than my head.
:05:38. > :05:42.Yeah. It's taller than me and you actually jump over that. You just
:05:42. > :05:46.run up and jump over that. These are just practice heights for now.
:05:46. > :05:56.Practice heights. No. Yeah, yeah. Some flats don't have a ceiling
:05:56. > :06:06.that height. Let's show you a few moves. Oh no. What do I do? Just
:06:06. > :06:19.
:06:19. > :06:24.run. Run with the bend and jump What I want you to do is go round,
:06:24. > :06:30.take off on one leg again, try and feel it, go over backwards. Don't
:06:30. > :06:34.hit the bar. What bar? Exactly. When you go over the bar, you feel

:07:04. > :07:11.
:07:11. > :07:17.and throw the knee up and before Yeah. Yes, coach. There you go,
:07:17. > :07:20.that's how it's done. I struggled at first to even hop onto the bed
:07:20. > :07:23.and now I was going over it backwards from a great height.
:07:23. > :07:29.Great coach. Couple of weeks, you're like me, playing for the
:07:29. > :07:33.Olympics. Tickets maybe. In the end you went right the way over the bar
:07:33. > :07:37.so it was pretty good. Thank you very much for your time, your
:07:37. > :07:47.tuition, your patience and I can put on my CV that I've hung out
:07:47. > :07:50.with an Olympic superstar. I have to admit I was far more
:07:50. > :07:55.impressed with Martyn's mixing skills than that Fosbury flop.
:07:55. > :07:58.Spoony, don't give up the day job just yet. Still to come on London
:07:58. > :08:05.Olympic Dreams, gold medal rower Mark Hunter explains how keeping it
:08:05. > :08:09.in the family could be a key to his success next summer. To be able to
:08:09. > :08:13.run into the grandstand and see my family and celebrate with them, it
:08:13. > :08:15.was an emotional time. Next summer over 50 sports will be represented
:08:15. > :08:21.by the Olympics and Paralympics, covering an incredible range of
:08:21. > :08:26.events. And one of the hottest tickets in town will be held right
:08:26. > :08:30.here on Horse Guards Parade. It is of course the beach volleyball.
:08:30. > :08:40.I've been finding out just how the sport's colourful image combined
:08:40. > :08:46.
:08:46. > :08:56.with this historic location has Sand, bikinis and honed bodies, the
:08:56. > :09:02.sport of beach volleyball can be What sort of images come in your
:09:02. > :09:06.mind when I say beach volleyball? Beautiful women. Sun. People with
:09:06. > :09:12.not many clothes on playing on the beach. Horse Guards Parade and
:09:12. > :09:15.skimpy bikinis. Demand for tickets for the 2012 beach volleyball saw
:09:15. > :09:23.the sport amongst the top five sellers with the women's final more
:09:23. > :09:26.over subscribed than the men's. I met up with Great Britain's Lucy
:09:26. > :09:31.Boulton at Horse Guards Parade to gauge her feelings on the attitude
:09:31. > :09:35.of the sport. People think it's just girls in bikinis prancing
:09:35. > :09:38.around. People say it's the hottest ticket in town. If that's what's
:09:38. > :09:42.attracted them to buying a ticket for the Olympics, that's fine, but
:09:42. > :09:48.hopefully when they do, this is the feedback from the test event, the
:09:48. > :09:52.average guy watching the volleyball has a bit of respect. So why do the
:09:52. > :09:55.women wear bikinis and the men wear shorts and vests? I actually just
:09:55. > :09:59.think it's the most practical thing to wear and I know obviously
:09:59. > :10:03.there's this whole sexy image and stuff like that, a lot of guys wear
:10:03. > :10:07.just the real small Speedo style bottoms and the vests I think of
:10:07. > :10:10.the sponsors. But there are reasons behind the sport's 2012 appeal
:10:10. > :10:16.including the decision to host the event at Horse Guards Parade, which
:10:16. > :10:21.brand experts say is key. I think the choice of venue to stage the
:10:21. > :10:24.event was quite a masterstroke in marketing. It generates interest,
:10:24. > :10:27.just that almost contradiction of having a very modern, lively, loud
:10:27. > :10:37.event in many cases in a very traditional and very historic part
:10:37. > :10:37.
:10:37. > :10:42.of London. So with all the hype is the beach volleyball really the
:10:42. > :10:45.hottest ticket in town? Would you want a ticket to go and watch the
:10:45. > :10:49.beach volleyball at Horse Guards Parade? It's the hottest ticket in
:10:49. > :10:52.town, so why not? Comparisons with Baywatch will continue. Unlike the
:10:52. > :11:02.TV show the Olympic beach volleyball at Horse Guards Parade,
:11:02. > :11:03.
:11:03. > :11:08.well, let's face it it won't be Still to come on London Olympic
:11:08. > :11:12.Dreams: I've got my new blades, I've been watching you guys run.
:11:12. > :11:16.You make it look remarkably easy. These blades magically make you a
:11:16. > :11:20.great runner but the reality is if you weren't a good runner to start
:11:21. > :11:24.off with you're going to be an even worse runner when we get you on
:11:24. > :11:28.blades. Well, rower Mark Hunter was actually born just outside of the
:11:28. > :11:31.Olympic Park in Forest Gate and he's going to be looking to defend
:11:31. > :11:37.the gold medal he won in Beijing in the lightweight double sculls with
:11:37. > :11:40.teammate Zac Purchase. Now the rowing events are going to take
:11:40. > :11:48.place at Eden Dorney. Water is very familiar to Mark because that's
:11:48. > :11:52.where his dad Terry works as a rowing coach as Chris Legg explains.
:11:52. > :11:55.Incredible skull here for Great Britain. After finishing last at
:11:55. > :12:02.the Athens games Mark Hunter was watched by his adoring family in
:12:02. > :12:05.Beijing as the East End boy won Olympic gold. And we have now gone
:12:05. > :12:12.into the record books for Great Britain as the Olympic champions
:12:12. > :12:16.and it sounds fantastic. When I look back to Beijing the excitement
:12:16. > :12:19.I had when I remember being on the podium, watching the Union Jack
:12:19. > :12:23.being raised, that was amazing but to be able to run into the
:12:23. > :12:29.grandstand and see my family and celebrate with them, it was an
:12:29. > :12:33.emotional time. I was right on the finish line. Matthew Pinsent and
:12:33. > :12:37.Steve Redgrave were there, they said, Terry, we want to talk to you
:12:37. > :12:41.after the race, and I said give me a chance that's because I can't
:12:41. > :12:45.even talk at the moment, I'm crying. I can't talk now, I really can't, I
:12:45. > :12:49.don't know what to say. You all cried. I did cry about how much it
:12:49. > :12:54.cost me to get out there! What have been the biggest challenges on this
:12:54. > :13:00.journey? Keeping up with the washing. Just a normal warmup,
:13:00. > :13:03.shoulders. Dad Terry used to be Mark's coach. You see he is moving
:13:03. > :13:10.with, the hands go forward and the boat moves underneath him, we are
:13:10. > :13:18.rowing, you push the boat along, you don't pull it. They really are
:13:18. > :13:22.a good example of how to skull about. This is why they win. Your
:13:22. > :13:27.dad was your first coach and he still likes to shout the occasional
:13:27. > :13:31.order from the boat. Do you still listen to him? It's always good to
:13:31. > :13:35.have advice from your father who has been through the good times and
:13:35. > :13:39.bad times. He showed his colours when his job was done, he passed me
:13:39. > :13:44.on. This summer Mark will be here at Eton Dorney on these very waters
:13:44. > :13:48.he knows so well. It's the ultimate really to be able to be at home,
:13:48. > :13:54.come through there. There will be 10,000 people roaming around here
:13:54. > :13:58.cheering us on. The banks of this place are going to be swarming with
:13:58. > :14:01.people. Your brother hopefully is going to be going for Olympic gold
:14:01. > :14:08.on these waters. How are you going to be feeling? Excited. Hopefully
:14:08. > :14:13.it won't be as bad as watching him win the last one. Mum and dad have
:14:13. > :14:17.been amazing. They have helped me through everything. It's the most
:14:17. > :14:27.amazing thing I've ever done. It's going to be with us forever. Thank
:14:27. > :14:28.
:14:28. > :14:32.This here's the Olympic finish line, right there the finishing tower,
:14:32. > :14:39.the finish line and hopefully this is where Mark will be in 2012,
:14:39. > :14:43.perched. Probably the most special moment of all our lives as a family
:14:43. > :14:47.so it will be great, I can't wait. I'll be with you in that boat, I'll
:14:47. > :14:50.be there with him and we all will. I don't think there is anything
:14:50. > :14:54.bigger in an athlete's career competing and winning something at
:14:54. > :14:57.home especially the Olympic Games. It doesn't get any bigger than that.
:14:57. > :15:02.Becoming Olympic champion at the London Games would represent the
:15:02. > :15:12.pinnacle of Mark Hunter's career. But the support from his family
:15:12. > :15:16.
:15:16. > :15:19.The Aquatic Centre is one of the most eye-catching of all the
:15:20. > :15:27.Olympic venues and despite its complex design, well, its place at
:15:27. > :15:30.the heart of the Olympic Park was never in doubt. In stark contrast
:15:30. > :15:35.this region around the capital, well, it's not exactly renowned for
:15:35. > :15:38.its mountainous terrain. In fact who would have thought you would
:15:38. > :15:43.even have a chance of building a world-class mountain bike course on
:15:43. > :15:47.the Thames estuary? But as Olympic Dreams discovered, when it comes to
:15:47. > :15:56.the Games they have a certain knack of raising the bar of people's
:15:56. > :16:04.London 2012's mission improbable, make a mountain biking course in
:16:04. > :16:09.the flattest region of the country. Make it close to the Olympic Park
:16:09. > :16:16.and make it the best ever. After a long search, 550 acres of Salvation
:16:16. > :16:21.Army land was found at Hadleigh Farm on the Thames estuary.
:16:21. > :16:31.seconds, 30 seconds. These riders are about to find out if the course
:16:31. > :16:34.
:16:34. > :16:38.Some of the world's top riders are here from all the continents of the
:16:38. > :16:44.globe. This is their first and last opportunity to check out this
:16:44. > :16:48.course ahead of London 2012. It was a ferociously hot day for the
:16:48. > :16:52.official road test of the course by the same riders who will be back
:16:52. > :16:57.for next year's Games. The test was a triumph of determination and
:16:57. > :17:07.belief. Belief that the flatlands of the Thames estuary could be the
:17:07. > :17:11.
:17:11. > :17:15.It's real tough racing and it's something we managed to overcome
:17:15. > :17:18.those doubters who said you can't have a mountain bike race where
:17:18. > :17:23.there are no mountains. We have proven that you can. Mountain
:17:23. > :17:29.biking had a difficult birth. The original choice was Weald Park near
:17:29. > :17:36.Brentwood. Lord Coe and co rode in to tell the world that Weald had
:17:36. > :17:38.wheels but if it did they soon fell off. OK, I'll do it. In an
:17:38. > :17:46.embarrassing twist the International Cycling Federation
:17:46. > :17:49.said Weald was too flat. They had six months to find an alternative.
:17:49. > :17:54.Six months during which the vultures from the higher grounds
:17:54. > :17:59.circled overhead. But thankfully an answer presented itself in the form
:17:59. > :18:03.of Hadleigh Farm. One of the technical challenges on the course
:18:03. > :18:08.has been named the Leap Of Faith. It could be said that just thinking
:18:08. > :18:11.about staging mountain biking here was just that. I always knew it
:18:11. > :18:15.would be a great success. Originally it was going to be in
:18:15. > :18:18.Brentwood. We were disappointed when that was said to be less
:18:18. > :18:22.challenging but I grew up around Hadleigh and I knew this area all
:18:22. > :18:26.my life. I knew this would be a fantastic venue, a great bowl, a
:18:26. > :18:30.great view, a great place to watch the sport so not a leap of faith
:18:30. > :18:34.for me but it took a few persuading people in London 2012 and
:18:34. > :18:37.international cycling that it would be a great venue but they are blown
:18:37. > :18:41.away by it. Hadleigh is ideal for spectators. On some courses riders
:18:41. > :18:45.disappear into the woods for long spells but in this natural bowl 60
:18:45. > :18:49.% of the five kilometre course is laid out for all to see. After the
:18:50. > :18:53.Games it will be adapted so the public can have a go. Excellent,
:18:53. > :18:56.absolutely terrific advert for the locality I think and it might
:18:56. > :19:00.change people's minds about the perception of Essex maybe.
:19:00. > :19:04.Sometimes you go to an event and it's like a big race, you only see
:19:04. > :19:08.the section where you are standing and because of the hills and stuff
:19:08. > :19:12.we can see the start, we can see the drop, we can see the rabbit
:19:12. > :19:17.over there. It's really good, I really like watching the bikes go
:19:17. > :19:22.really fast. I liked the bit over there when they go down. I really
:19:22. > :19:27.like it when they do that, they go so fast. There may be no mountains
:19:27. > :19:31.but no matter. After eight laps they will have cycled the height of
:19:31. > :19:41.Ben Nevis. There are climbs that will burn iron lungs and rocky
:19:41. > :19:44.
:19:44. > :19:49.World champions took part in this test and they all agreed Hadleigh
:19:49. > :19:52.was hard to handle. Every course is different and that's what's
:19:52. > :19:57.fantastic about the sport of mountain biking. There are always
:19:57. > :20:01.new challenges on new courses. It's tough, it's fun, fast and it's
:20:02. > :20:11.going to be a really great show and I hope tons of people come to watch
:20:12. > :20:24.
:20:25. > :20:30.It's difficult. It's difficult technically and physically. The
:20:30. > :20:34.only problem is it's really difficult to pass on the track.
:20:34. > :20:41.Most of the time you're on a single track and it's really difficult to
:20:41. > :20:45.pass but I was in front today so it wasn't a problem. It's not going to
:20:45. > :20:50.be the city of Beijing but the thing is here is it's exposed all
:20:50. > :20:55.the way round... For Dan Jarvis it was never in doubt. As a boy he
:20:55. > :20:59.cycled these hills and knows what they can do to tired legs. He took
:20:59. > :21:02.up mountain biking. Now he's a commentator. And he has to pinch
:21:02. > :21:08.himself when he sees the world's top riders competing in his local
:21:08. > :21:11.park. This is the very first place that I rode a mountain bike.
:21:11. > :21:15.There's a place somewhere down there that's got an imprint of my
:21:15. > :21:19.face on it somewhere. You could say there is a part of me that always
:21:19. > :21:23.here in Hadleigh but it's been amazing for me to see it. When I
:21:23. > :21:27.was riding here 25 odd years ago there was no way I would have
:21:27. > :21:30.thought that the Olympics would be here and now not only are they
:21:30. > :21:40.going to be here but we have actually realistically got a claim
:21:40. > :21:41.
:21:41. > :21:47.The Beijing Games were the most successful Paralympics ever for
:21:47. > :21:51.Great Britain with a final medal tally of 42 golds. Now next summer
:21:51. > :21:54.it's likely that all eyes will be on one South African, Oscar
:21:54. > :22:01.Pistorius, but Paralympics GB have their very own blade runners using
:22:01. > :22:11.state-of-the-art technology to help them reach their potential. Paul
:22:11. > :22:14.
:22:14. > :22:18.I'm here at Lee Valley Athletic Centre where the brightest and best
:22:19. > :22:22.of our Olympic and Paralympic athletes train every single day.
:22:22. > :22:26.For Jonnie, one of our country's top Olympians, training hard is
:22:26. > :22:30.just a way of life but he's got a secret weapon at his disposal. His
:22:30. > :22:35.blades. Jonnie Peacock, shoulder to shoulder with Pistorius and Peacock
:22:35. > :22:39.a little bit slow out of his box but his pick up is good. After
:22:39. > :22:42.getting his first blade Jonnie managed to go from novice to the
:22:42. > :22:46.World Championships in two years. I wonder what I will be able to
:22:46. > :22:49.achieve in one week. So when did you make that switch from what you
:22:49. > :22:53.would call normal prosthetic legs into sporty, running-type legs and
:22:53. > :22:58.blades that you are wearing now? didn't get a blade until about two
:22:58. > :23:05.years ago. Did it take you long to get that compensation between both
:23:05. > :23:08.legs? Definitely, five or six months. I'm still learning today.
:23:08. > :23:12.The Paralympics coming up this year, what are your hopes and aspirations
:23:12. > :23:17.and ambitions going into that? Obviously the first ambition is to
:23:17. > :23:22.make the team. I made the team for the World Championships earlier in
:23:22. > :23:26.the year so I'm hopeful I should be able to get onto the team. The only
:23:26. > :23:30.way to find out is to watch it in a year's time and see what you think.
:23:30. > :23:34.In terms of competition who are the big rivals that you are looking out
:23:34. > :23:37.for? Who are the ones to watch? Ultimately Oscar is still the king
:23:37. > :23:41.of the 100. COMMENTATOR: Oscar Pistorius cruising through,
:23:41. > :23:46.absolutely magnificent. Pistorius, T43. He's going to be the man to
:23:46. > :23:50.beat in London and there are a few people who are quite young and up
:23:50. > :23:55.and coming but we will have to wait and find out. Can anyone put on a
:23:55. > :23:58.pair of blades and become a runner? You can try it. Come up to me when
:23:58. > :24:01.you have got some. Legs to run on are a piece of specialised
:24:01. > :24:04.equipment, individually tailored for every athlete and they don't
:24:04. > :24:07.come cheap. Richard Hirons is the man who develops this incredible
:24:07. > :24:11.technology. This is a good example of the prosthesis Jonnie would wear.
:24:11. > :24:14.We call it the Cheetah. It is like for Pistorius. He uses similar
:24:14. > :24:18.products. It's the socket, the blade, the adapted footwear, so
:24:18. > :24:24.this is for track use. Very responsive blade here, this carbon
:24:24. > :24:28.fibre spring will give him as much energy return as we can. It doesn't
:24:28. > :24:31.produce more energy than his normal ankle, his normal leg. What a
:24:31. > :24:36.prosthesis does, it tries to reduce the extra effort that people have
:24:36. > :24:39.to put in. It's still extra work and there's no spring that is
:24:39. > :24:46.absolutely 100 % efficient and certainly no spring that is more
:24:46. > :24:50.than efficient so these just reduce the disadvantage that somebody has.
:24:50. > :24:53.I think I'm going to need a bit more help with this. So I've come
:24:53. > :24:57.to get some pointers from one of our most accomplished Paralympians,
:24:57. > :25:00.Stef Reid. COMMENTATOR: Great Britain has a new sprinter on the
:25:00. > :25:04.loose, as Stefanie Reid, a former Canadian, now wears the red, white
:25:04. > :25:08.and blue of Great Britain. Having lost her leg in a boating accident
:25:08. > :25:12.when she was 15, she runs in the 100 and 200 metres and competes in
:25:12. > :25:16.the long jump. I've got my new blades, I've been watching you guys
:25:16. > :25:19.run. You make it look easy. I'm struggling to stand still. Are they
:25:19. > :25:23.easy to run on? I think people might have the perception that
:25:23. > :25:28.these blades magically make you a great runner but the reality is if
:25:28. > :25:31.you were not a good runner to start off with you are going to be an
:25:31. > :25:34.even worse runner when we get you on blades. Is your blade longer
:25:34. > :25:39.than your actual leg, is it shorter? This leg is actually
:25:39. > :25:42.designed to be longer and the reason for that is when I run and I
:25:43. > :25:47.step down this blade is going to compress by about two inches and so
:25:47. > :25:51.this blade, it was designed for me to run and go fast so it has been
:25:51. > :25:55.aligned a bit longer. Have you any advice on how to make it easier?
:25:55. > :25:58.think for me I spent that first year doing the tedious work, doing
:25:59. > :26:02.the core work, doing the hip work, making sure I was running correctly
:26:02. > :26:12.and if you don't have a strong core, strong hips, it's going to wreak
:26:12. > :26:15.
:26:15. > :26:23.havoc on your body. So it is off to #Work at that body.
:26:23. > :26:27.# Work that body. Now I'm as fit as I'm going to get
:26:27. > :26:36.I think I'm ready to see what it's like to train with the
:26:36. > :26:40.professionals. You can use it more Right, I think I've had enough.
:26:40. > :26:44.You've put me through my paces. I'll let you get back to Dan and
:26:44. > :26:48.get on with your training and I'll leave it to the pros. Cheers,
:26:48. > :26:52.thanks a lot. I think with even all the training in the world I don't
:26:52. > :26:55.think I'd ever be quick enough or fit enough to compete with these
:26:55. > :26:58.guys. While these are incredible pieces of technology it's only
:26:58. > :27:01.through hard work and determination that you actually turn that
:27:01. > :27:05.incredible technology into gold medals on the track when it really
:27:05. > :27:07.matters. I'm pleased to say that Paul has
:27:07. > :27:11.recovered from his attempts to compete with Paralympics GB
:27:11. > :27:18.although it's safe to assume that he won't be selected for the team
:27:18. > :27:21.British Olympic Dreams returns to your screens on Saturday, 28

:27:34. > :27:37.scenes access with our British Olympic hopefuls. Now, before we go,
:27:37. > :27:45.let's get some good luck messages from some Olympic legends and some
:27:45. > :27:49.familiar faces for Team GB. Thanks for watching, goodbye. I'd like to
:27:49. > :27:52.wish all Olympians all the very best for a fantastic 2012.
:27:52. > :27:56.everybody taking part there in those Olympics, go out there,
:27:56. > :28:02.believe in yourself, do the best you can. We're looking forward to

:28:10. > :28:14.this is Melanie C, I want to wish Team GB the best of luck. You can
:28:14. > :28:18.do it. To all Team GB athletes, Olympic and Paralympic, the very
:28:18. > :28:26.best of luck. You should be honoured to wear the vest, you will
:28:26. > :28:30.do us proud. Good luck, train hard, race well. Go for it, we will be
