:00:09. > :00:13.Been in a few months' time Yorkshire hosts... These are
:00:13. > :00:23.Yorkshire's: six as well. Tonight we will give you the inside track
:00:23. > :00:34.
:00:34. > :00:40.The making of a golden girl. We have exclusive access to the
:00:40. > :00:45.training camp for Jessica Ennis. Overcoming adversity. Sarah
:00:45. > :00:50.Stevenson tells us about the worst year of her life, they head of the
:00:50. > :00:54.most important year of her career. And we follow the table tennis
:00:54. > :01:04.player doing extra shifts at his local supermarket to pay his way to
:01:04. > :01:07.
:01:07. > :01:11.the Paralympics. Jessica Ennis is world No. 1, with an apparently
:01:11. > :01:15.clear path to Olympic gold. All that changed last summer when she
:01:15. > :01:20.came second in the world championships. It meant a new
:01:20. > :01:29.challenge for her and her coach. Can they gained top spot when it
:01:29. > :01:34.matters most? This is day one, the first warm-up run at the beginning
:01:34. > :01:40.of the first training session of an Olympic season. We run diagonally
:01:40. > :01:44.through those trees and up to the top. Jessica Ennis is with a group
:01:44. > :01:51.of athletes. The coach is not planning to go easy on them on
:01:51. > :02:01.their off-season break. The coach people and the highlight of the
:02:01. > :02:08.
:02:08. > :02:12.It does not feel any different from other day one. The closer they to
:02:12. > :02:17.get to the Games, it may feel more important. We are starting a little
:02:17. > :02:23.bit harder than we have in the past but a thing that is just the
:02:23. > :02:30.natural progression. Jess is very much the leader. She's up from with
:02:30. > :02:36.the men, leaving the rest of the wind behind. You get cardiovascular
:02:36. > :02:39.fitter. We on grass which is a little easier on the joint. A for
:02:39. > :02:45.six days a week for the next 10 months, training for de Olympics
:02:45. > :02:51.will be her life. It is quite nice today because the weather is good,
:02:51. > :02:57.it is warm. But normally it is cold, it is wet and it is rainy. You do
:02:57. > :03:07.get used to it any do look forward to it in a weird kind of way. You
:03:07. > :03:07.
:03:07. > :03:12.do feel better one to have done it. Time for some respite from the
:03:12. > :03:17.uphill sprints. It is a Turk got any to catch the breath but also to
:03:17. > :03:25.catch up with friends. The subject of how she struggled in the javelin
:03:25. > :03:35.crops up. Sometimes, I plant a bit like that, a bit too far. I had
:03:35. > :03:40.that in the back of my mind. Jessica Ennis was a junior champion
:03:40. > :03:44.of Britain and Europe in the heptathlon. As a senior, she has
:03:44. > :03:49.gone one better. The girl from the city of steel came to Berlin
:03:49. > :03:53.hunting for gold and she has done it. In 2009 she became the number
:03:53. > :03:57.one heptathlete, tracing their opponents at the World
:03:58. > :04:02.Championships. But last summer she lost her world title. She takes a
:04:02. > :04:06.big hit on the second hurdle... Despite a mistake in the hurdles he
:04:06. > :04:11.finished a one in front but the port javelin throw one day to lead
:04:11. > :04:16.to a silver rather than gold. Hardly a disaster, just not perfect.
:04:16. > :04:23.Something to work, in training. Back at the hill runs, and she is
:04:23. > :04:28.still pushing herself and everyone else. Look, here. Cure any cheating
:04:28. > :04:33.yourself. Training session 1, Day One, is coming to a close. The
:04:33. > :04:39.mental and physical battle is one she has won before and know she can
:04:39. > :04:47.win again, even if, right now, warming down since a bit much.
:04:47. > :04:54.uphill! He are walking, it doesn't matter it is up or down. It is
:04:54. > :04:57.tiring, but first session is done now, so easing my way back in.
:04:57. > :05:03.Because deal and pigs are so special, people overdo it and they
:05:03. > :05:08.get hurt. -- de Olympics are so special. I am conscious that we
:05:08. > :05:11.keep these things in perspective and it is another year at work.
:05:11. > :05:16.is a long way after me at the moment. This is the beginning of
:05:16. > :05:25.the winter so I have a lot of hard work to do. Throughout this
:05:25. > :05:29.evening's programme, we will return to Jess and Tony. Foot was up, but
:05:29. > :05:35.the light was too lengthy. pressure mounts as training news on
:05:35. > :05:39.to fine-tuning technique. Most athletes have their ups and downs
:05:39. > :05:43.as they prepare for a big competition. But for the world tae
:05:43. > :05:48.kwon do champion Sarah Stephenson, she has been building up for the
:05:48. > :05:53.Olympics through the most difficult days of her life. You have to be
:05:53. > :05:59.tough to do what Sarah Stephenson does. Her sport is a martial art in
:05:59. > :06:07.which kicks and punches are given to Europe I's head and body. Sarah
:06:07. > :06:15.was the junior world champion. She got to the semi-finals of the 2000
:06:15. > :06:18.Olympics and won bronze at the last Olympics. The were happy. We went
:06:18. > :06:25.out screaming and shouting and telling all the world and what
:06:25. > :06:32.Sarah had done. In late 2010, Sarah married her coach, Keith Jennings.
:06:32. > :06:36.Home soil Olympics were on the horizon and times were good. But
:06:36. > :06:42.all that changed during what Sarah describes as the worst year of her
:06:42. > :06:47.life. In early 2011, her mum was diagnosed with cancer and, soon
:06:47. > :06:51.after, her dad was found to have a brain tumour. They were both told
:06:51. > :06:55.they did not have long to live. Whatever she would achieve at the
:06:55. > :07:01.London Olympics, they would not be there to see it. But despite
:07:01. > :07:09.missing training to care for her parents, Serevent to last year's
:07:09. > :07:17.World tae kwon do Championships, and one. I was saying to myself,
:07:17. > :07:23.they cannot hurt me, the girls in that ring. If I lose, so what? Are
:07:23. > :07:29.determined to go there and take it out on the other girls. Go
:07:29. > :07:32.forward... In late September, we quarter of this air as she launched
:07:33. > :07:37.her Academy. It is a way to give back the kind of support that she
:07:37. > :07:44.has recede down the years from coach and family. Her husband is
:07:45. > :07:51.there to help with the spy ring. timing has to be perfect. By this
:07:51. > :07:59.time, her father, Roy, had died. Her mum had hoped to come to
:07:59. > :08:02.Manchester to support Sarah, but she is too real. Instead, her ant
:08:02. > :08:10.and cousins arrive from Doncaster as a reminder that she is not
:08:10. > :08:18.aligned. We have just come to give her a bit of support. The problem
:08:18. > :08:23.with her mum is that she worries more about Sarah. It seems as
:08:23. > :08:26.though it is never ending now. It is taking its toll and it is really
:08:26. > :08:32.difficult for me now because it is not only going to lose one Perak,
:08:32. > :08:38.you're going to lose another one. In December, we quarter were so
:08:38. > :08:42.rare in a cafe in Doncaster. She is again getting the support she needs
:08:42. > :08:49.from her aunt and cousins because by now her mother has lost her
:08:49. > :08:54.fight with cancer. I was put in the Christmas tree up last Saturday and
:08:54. > :09:01.I was wearing to myself. Tears were streaming down my face. You cannot
:09:01. > :09:05.help but some time. I have a Olympics and a thing that is why, I
:09:05. > :09:14.had that big thing, so when that is done, I think will probably be like
:09:14. > :09:24.her. Mum and dad and not here and I have to a step up now. Do you feel
:09:24. > :09:30.pressure? A little bit. Don't feel pressured by us. I think pressure
:09:30. > :09:34.is something you put on yourself. You don't want to lose, you're
:09:34. > :09:42.warming to do well. Can you imagine, though, if I won in the Olympics,
:09:42. > :09:51.what you lot would be like! I think I will be a mess. Can we take the
:09:51. > :09:56.gold medal home with us? Yes. You can take it to show mum and dad.
:09:56. > :10:02.The 1st January is could be a new year, a new start, we all have to a
:10:02. > :10:06.focus on the Olympics. When they first got died does, the first
:10:06. > :10:10.thing they said was you have to get the Olympics and the road for us. I
:10:10. > :10:20.know that is what they want and what they have always wanted me to
:10:20. > :10:22.
:10:22. > :10:26.do so I've just got to go and do it now. Still to come, under pressure.
:10:26. > :10:32.Tony and Jess are fine-tuning her technique but not always agreeing
:10:32. > :10:35.on the detail. Slight difference of opinion there! And we visit the
:10:35. > :10:45.computer-game company in Barnsley where the action has already
:10:45. > :10:54.
:10:54. > :10:56.But first, I went out for a spot of light training with the two best
:10:56. > :11:05.triathletes in the Brownlee family also happen to be the best in the
:11:05. > :11:12.world. We run here normally about four times a week. We mountain bike
:11:12. > :11:19.here as well. They are all sorts of little ups and downs, would tidbits,
:11:19. > :11:23.Maugham and bits. The Brown the brothers had taken on surely the
:11:23. > :11:31.hardest one-day sport and may give their own. They have to swim for
:11:31. > :11:36.about a mile, cycle for 25 and then run for more than six. Last year,
:11:36. > :11:46.Alastair one or racist become world triathlon champion for the second
:11:46. > :11:49.time -- won four races. John finished second in the world. As
:11:49. > :11:55.the brothers have taken on the world they had proudly flown the
:11:55. > :12:00.Yorkshire flag. I am a proud Yorkshireman. It was great to cross
:12:00. > :12:05.the line with the flag that no one knows what it is! Do you feel you
:12:05. > :12:09.are spreading the word of Yorkshire? When I finished that
:12:10. > :12:15.line in Beijing, and Chinese guy XT took the flak away for examination
:12:15. > :12:19.to make sure it wasn't some kind of protest group! At least one person
:12:19. > :12:23.in China now knows what the Yorkshire flight is. Realistically,
:12:23. > :12:30.have you ever considered moving away from here. Once a nice, once
:12:30. > :12:35.we have been up on the more and the rain has been really hard.
:12:35. > :12:39.training is great. We can go to the swimming pool in Leeds and in 10
:12:39. > :12:46.minutes you are out in the countryside. It is so rare to get
:12:46. > :12:52.training as good as it is here. Quiet roads, off-road running, but
:12:52. > :12:56.facilities and friendly people. World domination started here.
:12:56. > :13:01.Alastair was born in Dewsbury before the family moved to two near

:13:09. > :13:15.development continued at Bradford Grammar thanks to great facilities

:13:53. > :14:00.We tried to get him going but he likes charging up people and
:14:00. > :14:05.rolling around the ball looking for the bald! Having bought is it that

:14:14. > :14:20.coming up on your heels, is that pushing you caught? Yes, it is like

:17:00. > :17:05.close? Change is difficult. She knows that I am successful if I do
:17:05. > :17:09.that, now the position is, if we make changes, I might not be
:17:09. > :17:15.successful. As a coach, you have to overcome that and say there is a

:17:19. > :17:24.just go their separate ways for now, but when we next see them together,

:23:35. > :23:39.travelled 30,000 miles. He has done it on his own. He is tired and it
:23:39. > :23:45.has become too much. It is the final day of the Argentinian Open.
:23:45. > :23:53.I am not taking part, unfortunately, my journey has come to an end. I am
:23:53. > :23:57.disappointed that I have not qualified for the 2012 games.
:23:57. > :24:02.Farrel has given it everything, but he, like most athletes who try,
:24:02. > :24:08.will not be competing in London. think very few -- if you have a
:24:08. > :24:13.chance and it is your dream, you have to follow it to the end. Even
:24:13. > :24:21.if it is just the slimmest chance. You have to stop -- still try. You
:24:21. > :24:29.have to say, I gave it my best shot. It is 7am, and coach Toni
:24:29. > :24:32.Miniechello is on his way to Leeds met University. Whilst most of Jess
:24:32. > :24:40.Ennis's coaching takes place in Sedgefield, they head north for
:24:40. > :24:45.javelin training and physiotherapy. It is some great craft. That pushed
:24:45. > :24:53.the sessions on, she is working well. Was there to complement?
:24:53. > :24:57.was! That was a compliment! Go and have a walk, see how it feels.
:24:57. > :25:01.Ennis is in the hands of physiotherapist Alison Rose. Just
:25:01. > :25:07.from the way she is walking, she had detected a problem but even
:25:07. > :25:10.Jessica herself cannot feel. It is coming out of the left hip.
:25:10. > :25:14.discomfort Jessica is feeling in her leg is actually being caught
:25:14. > :25:18.further up in her hip. She has found the true source of the
:25:18. > :25:28.problem and so she can treat the strain before it becomes the injury.
:25:28. > :25:30.
:25:30. > :25:34.Pop on your right side. Our! It is incredibly tight, then she screams
:25:34. > :25:38.and you are no you on the right spot. There has got a lot more
:25:38. > :25:43.attention than they should be, the hip will not move the way it should.
:25:44. > :25:48.It affects the way you walk and run. Alison's massage has loosened
:25:48. > :25:54.Jessica's hit and a potential problem has been avoided. Now for
:25:54. > :25:58.more training. Javelin is the events that she has always
:25:59. > :26:03.struggled with the most. At last summer's world championship, a poor
:26:03. > :26:07.throw put paid to her chances of gold. That has put a huge
:26:07. > :26:11.determination on her to put it right. Her coach is a former
:26:11. > :26:21.Commonwealth, European and world medallist. Was it that, all that,
:26:21. > :26:23.
:26:23. > :26:27.it is minute, it is about this much body lean. Very, very good! Nice.
:26:27. > :26:31.Jessica is on fire as she puts all the technical pieces into place.
:26:31. > :26:35.That is a lot better, that is good. I need to keep practising and
:26:35. > :26:40.drilling and hope it comes Wyllie naturally. It is great to have
:26:40. > :26:45.sessions like this. It has been a real breakthrough, and she has
:26:45. > :26:50.consistently thrown at long. If we have reasonable throws, it is good
:26:50. > :26:57.for confidence, it can also supply a confident if you think it is far
:26:57. > :27:01.and it is not. 50 metres! But it is confidential! She would not tell us
:27:01. > :27:05.the exact distance, but she has thrown constant -- comfortably over
:27:05. > :27:09.40 metres and close to her competition-best. A big step
:27:09. > :27:13.forward from the world championships. I think her
:27:13. > :27:18.confidence took a knock there, having not thrown well. There is a
:27:19. > :27:22.bit more belief now and she knows how to fix herself. Today, she
:27:22. > :27:27.matched power with timing and technique. Another fraction of
