0:02:23 > 0:02:26You've got to the final six - how pleased are you?

0:02:26 > 0:02:30So frigging phenomenally pleased.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32- Yeah.- It's been so, so hard.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37It's a race, I'm going to race it as hard as I can.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39And I think we've all realised, we've got our physical limits

0:02:39 > 0:02:41and it's just our mental limits

0:02:41 > 0:02:43which are the ones that are allowing us to go further now

0:02:43 > 0:02:46than we thought possible before we came on this show, probably.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49You know, I've made it to the final, I'm more than happy with that,

0:02:49 > 0:02:52but just still going to push as hard as I can for the next little bit,

0:02:52 > 0:02:55- just see what happens.- Have you been pushed beyond your limits?- Oh, yeah.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58Most people get up every day and live the same life, you know,

0:02:58 > 0:03:00and they don't do anything different,

0:03:00 > 0:03:02they don't challenge themselves.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04And I think how can you possibly know who you really are

0:03:04 > 0:03:06unless you've been pushed to way beyond your limits?

0:03:06 > 0:03:08You are shit.

0:03:10 > 0:03:11How much have you got left?

0:03:11 > 0:03:13There are parts of me that I can dig into

0:03:13 > 0:03:17that hopefully will allow me to have enough left to get through.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20But I suspect they're going to be by far the hardest 48 hours

0:03:20 > 0:03:21of the whole thing.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24I just want to be able to survive

0:03:24 > 0:03:25what is about to happen

0:03:25 > 0:03:28and to be able to do my best and to be able to give it my all

0:03:28 > 0:03:31and just see how far I can possibly push myself.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35I'd love to win it, I'd love to win it.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38Every challenge I've been given, I've not worried about the time,

0:03:38 > 0:03:40I've just made sure that I ain't gave up

0:03:40 > 0:03:42and just plodded along like a little tortoise

0:03:42 > 0:03:44and got there in the end, you know? Soldiered through.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46It's pride now, innit? You give up now,

0:03:46 > 0:03:47you might as well give up on the first day,

0:03:47 > 0:03:49or not even have turned up.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52So for me it's all about just getting myself through the hurt locker, through the pain,

0:03:52 > 0:03:55through all the different emotions, and just keep going.

0:03:56 > 0:03:57Argh!

0:03:57 > 0:03:59Having got to this point,

0:03:59 > 0:04:01you must now be thinking that you want to win this?

0:04:01 > 0:04:03I'm going to do my hardest. That's it, full stop.

0:04:03 > 0:04:07I'm not going to think of anything, I'm just going to do my hardest.

0:04:07 > 0:04:09I'd love to see a before-and-after shot of all of us,

0:04:09 > 0:04:11if you count up all the scars,

0:04:11 > 0:04:12the almost-wounds we've got,

0:04:12 > 0:04:16seeing my lips and I'm cracking up.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19Yeah, it's taken a lot out of me.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23You've made it to the final. How pleased are you?

0:04:23 > 0:04:25I'm over the moon. I am really, really pleased.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28But kind of woke up this morning with the same anxiety

0:04:28 > 0:04:29as when we first come.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31What's going to get you through, then?

0:04:31 > 0:04:34Just a bit of grit and determination, I think.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37It's just the thought that I don't want to give up,

0:04:37 > 0:04:39I don't want to quit something.

0:04:39 > 0:04:41We've got to get people over this.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43So those are our finalists.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46It's all set up to be a cracking climax

0:04:46 > 0:04:48to Special Forces: Ultimate Hell Week.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51Candidates!

0:04:54 > 0:04:57They're about to face the next 48 hours

0:04:57 > 0:05:00under the command of a former member of the SAS...

0:05:00 > 0:05:03Your positions.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05..the elite unit of the British Army,

0:05:05 > 0:05:08often referred to as The Regiment.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12- Right, good morning. - ALL:- Good morning, Sir.

0:05:12 > 0:05:14My name's Bob Podesta.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17I spent 27 years in the British Army.

0:05:17 > 0:05:2125 of those years was in The Regiment.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25OK? I was one of the youngest men ever to join, at the age of 19.

0:05:27 > 0:05:31The British Special Forces have a worldwide reputation.

0:05:31 > 0:05:32They are the best in the world.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35Shrouded by secrecy, the Special Air Service,

0:05:35 > 0:05:37known simply as the SAS,

0:05:37 > 0:05:41was first formed as a top-secret unit in 1941.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46Believed to undertake a number of roles,

0:05:46 > 0:05:48including counterterrorism and direct action,

0:05:48 > 0:05:51they first gained worldwide recognition in 1980

0:05:51 > 0:05:53after rescuing 19 hostages

0:05:53 > 0:05:56during a siege at the Iranian embassy in London.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03With little verifiable public information

0:06:03 > 0:06:04existing on The Regiment,

0:06:04 > 0:06:07the members are recruited from the UK Armed Forces

0:06:07 > 0:06:09and in order to be selected

0:06:09 > 0:06:11candidates have to pass a process

0:06:11 > 0:06:15that is held twice a year on the Brecon Beacons,

0:06:15 > 0:06:17which has a 90% failure rate.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20A successful Special Forces recruit

0:06:20 > 0:06:23would need the will to live, the will to get to somewhere,

0:06:23 > 0:06:25no matter what the difficulties are.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28The endurance and the mental attributes

0:06:28 > 0:06:31of getting to a place to carry out his mission.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36I do believe up to now

0:06:36 > 0:06:40that you've had ten days of training by other special-forces experts.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43I don't care about that training.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45Your selection starts from now.

0:06:45 > 0:06:47I'll be watching you from here on.

0:06:47 > 0:06:49And what I'm going to do now

0:06:49 > 0:06:52is to put you on the normal British Army BFT,

0:06:52 > 0:06:54or the Battle Fitness Test,

0:06:54 > 0:06:59and this involves a 1.5-mile speed march

0:06:59 > 0:07:02and a 1.5-mile free run back.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05And remember, it's up to me whether you pass or fail this,

0:07:05 > 0:07:08so do your best.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11- Do you understand? - ALL: Yes, sir.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14Right, guys. Take off your jackets.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17Fall in two-deep, facing that way, ready to march out.

0:07:17 > 0:07:18Quick march.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21Left, left. Left, right, left.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25For the next 48 hours,

0:07:25 > 0:07:28our recruits will be under intense psychological pressure.

0:07:28 > 0:07:32They will face three main challenges synonymous with SAS selection.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34First, escape and evade.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37Then resistance to interrogation.

0:07:38 > 0:07:42Before ending with the long drag, the final endurance challenge.

0:07:44 > 0:07:46But first, Bob wants to see

0:07:46 > 0:07:49how close the last ten days have brought the finalists

0:07:49 > 0:07:52to becoming real special-forces soldiers.

0:07:52 > 0:07:54Joining me throughout the course of the final

0:07:54 > 0:07:56is psychologist John Leach,

0:07:56 > 0:07:58who specialises in military survival.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02It'll be up to him, our military directing staff

0:08:02 > 0:08:03and, of course, Bob,

0:08:03 > 0:08:06who will decide on our eventual winner.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09How does what the SAS look for

0:08:09 > 0:08:12differ from what some of the other special forces

0:08:12 > 0:08:13have been trying to find?

0:08:13 > 0:08:15Double march.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18You find with the Special Air Service Regiment,

0:08:18 > 0:08:20the approach is much more understated

0:08:20 > 0:08:23than you'll find in a lot of the other countries.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25Left, right, left, right, left, right, left.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27People that turn up

0:08:27 > 0:08:31to start selection with the British Special Forces,

0:08:31 > 0:08:32they're expected to be fit,

0:08:32 > 0:08:34they're expected to be self-disciplined.

0:08:34 > 0:08:35Good.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38So we're not going to see the shouting and screaming?

0:08:38 > 0:08:41You shouldn't see the shouting and screaming, that's not going to work.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44If you need to shout and scream at people in the British forces,

0:08:44 > 0:08:47then they're not the type of person you want in special units anyway.

0:08:47 > 0:08:48Go!

0:08:48 > 0:08:50'Immediately after the group march

0:08:50 > 0:08:53'it's time for the second half of the BFT...'

0:08:53 > 0:08:56- They've started at a cracking pace.- Yeah.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58'..the individual 1.5-mile run.'

0:08:58 > 0:09:01The reason for this is, if you were in battle

0:09:01 > 0:09:04and you were running across a field in front of the enemy,

0:09:04 > 0:09:07you've got to be able to get stuck into them afterwards.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11So if this was in the military,

0:09:11 > 0:09:13if you don't get back in a certain time, you're gone.

0:09:13 > 0:09:15Straight away, you'd be out?

0:09:15 > 0:09:17Well, you wouldn't be out, but they'd give you a warning

0:09:17 > 0:09:20and then they'd make you do the test again.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23I'm very surprised that the girls are keeping up with the men.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25'The recruits don't know it,

0:09:25 > 0:09:27'but the times will determine who is paired with who

0:09:27 > 0:09:29'during the next phase of the competition.'

0:09:29 > 0:09:31Go through the gate for the finish.

0:09:31 > 0:09:35'First to arrive back at base is Brassington...'

0:09:35 > 0:09:368:59.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39'..in a time of just under nine minutes.'

0:09:39 > 0:09:42Bent. Time is 9:36.

0:09:42 > 0:09:46'Miller, beaten by Murphy in the Spetsnaz obstacle race,

0:09:46 > 0:09:49'is the first of the two remaining women to cross the line.'

0:09:49 > 0:09:519:42.

0:09:53 > 0:09:569:48.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59Finish is here, Murphy. Remember your time.

0:09:59 > 0:10:0110:09.

0:10:01 > 0:10:03All in.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06'Gatenby is the last to return.'

0:10:06 > 0:10:0810:15...

0:10:08 > 0:10:1016, 17,

0:10:10 > 0:10:1318, 19.

0:10:15 > 0:10:17Right, guys, well done.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20But I don't think it's quite good enough.

0:10:20 > 0:10:24When I did this run, I used to do it in eight minutes.

0:10:24 > 0:10:28The first person that came in just now did it in 8:59.

0:10:28 > 0:10:32So, what I'm going to do is to give you another chance

0:10:32 > 0:10:34and let you do it all over again.

0:10:34 > 0:10:36- Do you understand? - ALL: Yes, sir.

0:10:44 > 0:10:47'Once more, Brassington is first over the line...'

0:10:47 > 0:10:50Time is now 9:17.

0:10:50 > 0:10:52'..but in a slower time. '

0:10:52 > 0:10:54Bent coming in.

0:10:54 > 0:10:579:52.

0:10:57 > 0:10:58Miller coming in.

0:10:58 > 0:11:009:59.

0:11:00 > 0:11:02Gatenby coming in.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05'Only Gatenby improves on his time.'

0:11:05 > 0:11:0710:09.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12Curnyn coming in.

0:11:12 > 0:11:1310:18.

0:11:13 > 0:11:15Murphy coming in,

0:11:15 > 0:11:1610:46.

0:11:19 > 0:11:20The recruits regroup

0:11:20 > 0:11:24to find out if they've reached an acceptable standard.

0:11:24 > 0:11:25The idea of this run

0:11:25 > 0:11:29is for you to be able to run this three miles into battle

0:11:29 > 0:11:31and be able to fight at the end of it.

0:11:31 > 0:11:33ALL: Yes, sir.

0:11:33 > 0:11:35The times that you're showing here

0:11:35 > 0:11:37are sort of the times that the average soldier

0:11:37 > 0:11:39who is over 40 years old

0:11:39 > 0:11:41would be doing in the army. Do you understand?

0:11:41 > 0:11:43- ALL: Yes, sir. - Off you go.

0:11:43 > 0:11:45- Thank you, Sir.- Thank you.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48Having made it to the final,

0:11:48 > 0:11:51and with no-one posting a satisfactory time,

0:11:51 > 0:11:53all six recruits have failed to impress

0:11:53 > 0:11:55the new special-forces veteran.

0:11:55 > 0:11:57So it's still all to play for.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00Everyone will need to up their performance

0:12:00 > 0:12:03if they want to stay in the competition.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05We might have made it to the final,

0:12:05 > 0:12:07but still we're little shits, in his eyes.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10It was on stones, in boots...

0:12:10 > 0:12:11when we're a bit tired.

0:12:11 > 0:12:13Let's be honest.

0:12:13 > 0:12:15All he's looking for is mental grit.

0:12:15 > 0:12:18He wants to know what kind of mettle you've got.

0:12:18 > 0:12:21I don't think the SAS are really ones for positive feedback.

0:12:21 > 0:12:22They just want you to do your hardest,

0:12:22 > 0:12:24and even your hardest isn't hard enough.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29The next phase is escape and evade.

0:12:29 > 0:12:33This is based on a real operational life-or-death situation

0:12:33 > 0:12:36that is the bread and butter of Special Forces units.

0:12:38 > 0:12:39The SAS requires soldiers

0:12:39 > 0:12:42who have the spirit and mental resilience

0:12:42 > 0:12:44to survive behind enemy lines.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48Based on the times from the Battle Fitness Test,

0:12:48 > 0:12:50the fastest and slowest recruits

0:12:50 > 0:12:53will be paired together for the challenge.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55And the twos are going to be...

0:12:55 > 0:12:57Brassington and Gatenby,

0:12:57 > 0:12:58Bent and Murphy,

0:12:58 > 0:13:01and Miller and Curnyn.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03So you'll be running together on the exercise.

0:13:03 > 0:13:07You'll all be taken to an area in the black mountains,

0:13:07 > 0:13:10and remember, there is an enemy watching you,

0:13:10 > 0:13:11they're going to try and capture you.

0:13:11 > 0:13:14They're from the Parachute Regiment, they're pretty expert.

0:13:14 > 0:13:18My advice to you is keep off the high ground,

0:13:18 > 0:13:21where the enemy are likely to watch.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24Before I go, I would like to take everybody's watches off them.

0:13:24 > 0:13:27If you pass me all your watches over here now.

0:13:27 > 0:13:28OK, what's going to happen now

0:13:28 > 0:13:33is you're going to be issued with Second World War-type greatcoats.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36OK. Sizes there. One each.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38Have a look. Check it out.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41First, on official SAS selection for this exercise,

0:13:41 > 0:13:44these coasts are donned by our recruits,

0:13:44 > 0:13:48in order to make them identifiable out in the field.

0:13:48 > 0:13:51Wow, I think I pull this off, mate.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57In their pairs, the recruits leave for the mountains.

0:13:57 > 0:13:58Hide-and-seek with the SAS.

0:13:58 > 0:14:00I'm petrified.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08It's been quite nerve-racking today,

0:14:08 > 0:14:09cos it feels like...

0:14:09 > 0:14:11all the rest has been like dog work,

0:14:11 > 0:14:12and real hard labour,

0:14:12 > 0:14:14but this is a bit different from that.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19Nervous. A bit of anxiety floating about.

0:14:19 > 0:14:21We'll do all right. We'll give it our best, won't we?

0:14:21 > 0:14:23- All we can do is 100%.- Yeah.

0:14:24 > 0:14:27En route, each team have been given coordinates

0:14:27 > 0:14:30to navigate to their three separate target locations.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33They have four hours to reach their destination.

0:14:33 > 0:14:35One hour after they're dropped off,

0:14:35 > 0:14:38the enemy forces will be released to chase them down.

0:14:38 > 0:14:40THEY DISCUSS

0:14:43 > 0:14:46Afternoon. Hi. So you guys are chasing them, are you?

0:14:46 > 0:14:47Yeah.

0:14:47 > 0:14:50So what sort of chance have our recruits got of evading you?

0:14:50 > 0:14:53They've got lots of nice streams they can hide in.

0:14:53 > 0:14:56Eventually they're going to have to hit high ground and these big hills.

0:14:56 > 0:14:58I'd say their only chance is to try and go wide

0:14:58 > 0:15:01and then come up in the hedgerows, almost.

0:15:01 > 0:15:03But that's going to take them all day.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05A lot of people will be drawn to the tracks,

0:15:05 > 0:15:09because they'll think they'll be able to move faster and possibly evade us that way.

0:15:09 > 0:15:13'Also added to this challenge is a far more sinister element.'

0:15:13 > 0:15:16You're not looking quite as friendly as the rest of your hunter team.

0:15:16 > 0:15:17What's your role in this?

0:15:17 > 0:15:20We're part of the interrogation team, which will, erm...

0:15:20 > 0:15:22We'll be aiming to get as much information

0:15:22 > 0:15:23out of these guys as possible.

0:15:23 > 0:15:25So this is going to be how it happens for real?

0:15:25 > 0:15:28It would be, yeah. These guys are trying to win.

0:15:28 > 0:15:31Then next thing you know, all hell breaks loose on them.

0:15:31 > 0:15:33They're then going to be transported back

0:15:33 > 0:15:35to the interrogation, or the holding centre,

0:15:35 > 0:15:38and that's when the interrogators will really go to work on them.

0:15:38 > 0:15:41Unaware of the fate that awaits them,

0:15:41 > 0:15:45the recruits begin to navigate from the three separate starting points.

0:15:47 > 0:15:50Brassington and Gatenby immediately feel exposed.

0:15:50 > 0:15:55- The only thing I'm worried about is they did say stay off the high ground.- The high ground, yeah.

0:15:55 > 0:15:56And technically this is high ground, innit?

0:15:56 > 0:15:58Yeah, but I'm thinking we've just started,

0:15:58 > 0:16:00so we've got a bit of a lead on them,

0:16:00 > 0:16:01so if we just smash this first one out

0:16:01 > 0:16:03and then we're going to be coming,

0:16:03 > 0:16:06then we've got a bit of a head start and then we'll start detouring.

0:16:06 > 0:16:11Smash this first bit out, with good paths, and then start going. Yeah.

0:16:14 > 0:16:16Miller and Curnyn start out in grassland.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20Ideally, I still think this is probably

0:16:20 > 0:16:22one of the better paths to go.

0:16:23 > 0:16:26At least that way we're in the trees and out of sight.

0:16:26 > 0:16:30And hopefully, from a distance, our colours should blend in

0:16:30 > 0:16:32with what's around us.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34And it's not on a main path.

0:16:36 > 0:16:38Cos I believe being on a main path

0:16:38 > 0:16:41is a little bit more of a tactical advantage to the enemy,

0:16:41 > 0:16:44to ambush us.

0:16:46 > 0:16:48Team one, you're going to head to this location here,

0:16:48 > 0:16:51team two is going to head up to this choke point here...

0:16:51 > 0:16:56'Led by Bob, the hunter force leave to pursue the escapees.'

0:16:56 > 0:16:59Is everybody happy with that? OK, in your vehicles, let's go.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04With the hunter force now hot on their heels,

0:17:04 > 0:17:07Bent and Murphy are forced to take it slow.

0:17:09 > 0:17:11After ten days of intense competition,

0:17:11 > 0:17:14Murphy's feet have taken a battering...

0:17:14 > 0:17:16The bottom of my heel is the worst,

0:17:16 > 0:17:20I think from just the constant pounding with the extra weight.

0:17:21 > 0:17:23- Painful when I press into it?- Yeah.

0:17:23 > 0:17:26..so the strategy is to find the most economical route.

0:17:26 > 0:17:28Go that way?

0:17:28 > 0:17:32Yeah, let's try and avoid that big one. We're here.

0:17:32 > 0:17:35We're going to hopefully come up somewhere up here, to the saddle.

0:17:35 > 0:17:37- Not the first fork, the second fork.- Yeah.

0:17:37 > 0:17:40And then we're heading in this direction.

0:17:40 > 0:17:42And we would prefer to do this,

0:17:42 > 0:17:45than do all that extra mileage, so...

0:17:45 > 0:17:46- Good?- Yeah.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48Rock and roll. Let's go.

0:17:52 > 0:17:54Why are these escape-and-evade exercises

0:17:54 > 0:17:56so important to the special forces?

0:17:57 > 0:18:00Escape and evasion training is important,

0:18:00 > 0:18:02not just as special forces,

0:18:02 > 0:18:06but to anyone who is likely to find themselves compromised

0:18:06 > 0:18:07in enemy territory,

0:18:07 > 0:18:09such as air crew, for example.

0:18:09 > 0:18:13And it's a survival practice, if you like,

0:18:13 > 0:18:15to think of it that way.

0:18:17 > 0:18:21After two hours on the mountains, the hunter force is closing in.

0:18:22 > 0:18:24What have you seen?

0:18:24 > 0:18:26Moving along the ridge.

0:18:26 > 0:18:28Going that way.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38I'm just checking the back. Brassington's running up forward.

0:18:38 > 0:18:42When he's scoped it out and made sure it's clear, he's giving me the hand signal.

0:18:43 > 0:18:45The recruits have been spotted.

0:18:45 > 0:18:46Yeah. Let's go.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48And now must evade capture.

0:18:48 > 0:18:51- Are they coming down that bank? - They're coming down, yeah.

0:18:53 > 0:18:55The chase is on.

0:18:55 > 0:18:58- What have you spotted?- Two people.

0:18:58 > 0:19:01Couple of people on top of the valley.

0:19:01 > 0:19:03They've just seen that we've spotted them

0:19:03 > 0:19:06and they've got down in the bottom of the valley there, hiding.

0:19:06 > 0:19:07They're starting to move fast now.

0:19:07 > 0:19:09They're going to have to come down, go up.

0:19:09 > 0:19:12- By that time, we could be anywhere. - Let's just try and get out of view.

0:19:16 > 0:19:18We've just been seen.

0:19:18 > 0:19:19Uh-oh, uh-oh.

0:19:19 > 0:19:21Let's go. Let's run.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25Bent and Murphy are seized on open moorland.

0:19:25 > 0:19:26Get down, get down!

0:19:28 > 0:19:30You, put your fuckin' head down. Down!

0:19:33 > 0:19:38Once captured, it's time to see that mental resilience Bob is looking for.

0:19:38 > 0:19:41The recruits are permitted to answer only four questions.

0:19:41 > 0:19:43Their name,

0:19:43 > 0:19:44date of birth,

0:19:44 > 0:19:46blood group and religion.

0:19:46 > 0:19:51Outside of that, they must respond to any further questioning

0:19:51 > 0:19:54with the phrase "I cannot answer that question."

0:19:55 > 0:19:57- Who are you?- Danielle Murphy.

0:19:57 > 0:20:00- What?!- Danielle Murphy.

0:20:00 > 0:20:04- Anything else?- I can't answer that question.- Ohhhh.

0:20:04 > 0:20:07'In enemy hands, the real test begins.

0:20:07 > 0:20:10'Our finalists must remain alert for interrogation.'

0:20:12 > 0:20:14Is there a danger once you're caught, you just give in?

0:20:14 > 0:20:17When at that point, your defences should,

0:20:17 > 0:20:20come up and that's when the mind really needs to kick in?

0:20:20 > 0:20:24Yes, you need to switch on very quickly.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26They mentally freeze for a while.

0:20:26 > 0:20:29They become placid. In a number of cases people will just become apathetic.

0:20:29 > 0:20:33They'll become malleable to the capture team.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36I'm over here! What the fuck you looking at over there?

0:20:36 > 0:20:39- What are you doing walking out here, girl?- I can't answer that question.

0:20:39 > 0:20:42WHAT ARE YOU DOING WALKING OUT HERE WITH HIM?

0:20:42 > 0:20:44YOU'VE GOT SOMETHING TO FUCKING PROVE!

0:20:44 > 0:20:50What they've got to do is make an assessment of the nature

0:20:50 > 0:20:52of the capture and what they're in

0:20:52 > 0:20:58and get their mental functioning back as quickly as they can.

0:20:58 > 0:21:00Look at me!

0:21:00 > 0:21:03- Which bit don't you understand? - I can't answer that question.

0:21:03 > 0:21:06I tell you what, we'll give you a nice little

0:21:06 > 0:21:08way you can prove exactly who you are and what you are.

0:21:08 > 0:21:10On your knees.

0:21:10 > 0:21:12Hurry the fuck up!

0:21:12 > 0:21:14- Who are you, poppet?- Danny Bent.

0:21:14 > 0:21:17I am over here, what are you looking for down there? Lost something?

0:21:17 > 0:21:20Drop something down there? Well?!

0:21:20 > 0:21:23- I can't answer that question, sir. - You just fucking did, you halfwit.

0:21:23 > 0:21:27'In addition to the four permitted responses, the capture

0:21:27 > 0:21:31'team are also trying to elicit signs of non-verbal communication

0:21:31 > 0:21:35'from which they could extract information from the recruits.'

0:21:35 > 0:21:39- What have you been doing out here? - I can't answer that question, sir.

0:21:39 > 0:21:41- Which one? - I can't answer that question, sir.

0:21:41 > 0:21:44What are you shaking your fucking head at me for?

0:21:44 > 0:21:46You already are, you don't fucking get this, do you?

0:21:46 > 0:21:49You already answered every fucking question cos you've been

0:21:49 > 0:21:51shaking your head from left to right and up

0:21:51 > 0:21:54and down like a cocking, dogging dog...haven't ya?!

0:21:56 > 0:21:59Come on, monkey boy, do this little bit more. Come on.

0:21:59 > 0:22:01That's a good start, innit?

0:22:01 > 0:22:03HE LAUGHS

0:22:03 > 0:22:05Are you ready to play?

0:22:05 > 0:22:08'Whilst escorted off the mountain for interrogation,

0:22:08 > 0:22:12'Curnyn and Miller are next to be apprehended.'

0:22:12 > 0:22:14Grab them.

0:22:17 > 0:22:18Kneel.

0:22:18 > 0:22:22'It's Brassington and Gatenby who evaded capture the longest.

0:22:22 > 0:22:26'Their expedition finally over after three hours, 23 minutes.'

0:22:26 > 0:22:28Get up.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34They've all been captured, they've been brought down, bagged and

0:22:34 > 0:22:38now they're been loaded up to be taken back and interrogated.

0:22:38 > 0:22:41It's 14 hours into our version of SAS training

0:22:41 > 0:22:44and the recruits are on their way to the next phase,

0:22:45 > 0:22:49where they'll have their ability to resist interrogation tested.

0:22:50 > 0:22:54This replicates the very real experience that a Special Forces

0:22:54 > 0:22:58soldier may face if caught behind enemy lines.

0:22:58 > 0:23:01It's essential they're able to withstand cross examination

0:23:01 > 0:23:04and do not reveal any operational information.

0:23:07 > 0:23:10As a recognisable face and voice to the recruits,

0:23:10 > 0:23:13Bob will play no part in this exercise.

0:23:13 > 0:23:17Everything about this phase will be uncomfortable and unfamiliar.

0:23:17 > 0:23:20Who are these guys who have taken over?

0:23:20 > 0:23:22The people who have taken over this phase,

0:23:22 > 0:23:25they are an organisation comprising former military personnel

0:23:25 > 0:23:30who are all trained and qualified and experienced in

0:23:30 > 0:23:33instructing conduct under capture

0:23:33 > 0:23:35and resistance to interrogation training.

0:23:35 > 0:23:41For our recruits, what are they going to be experiencing?

0:23:41 > 0:23:45What they're going through is a controlled exposure to the

0:23:45 > 0:23:49sort of thing they would be expected to get if they were taken for real.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55Psychologically, our civilian recruits have not faced

0:23:55 > 0:23:58anything like this over the past ten days.

0:23:58 > 0:24:00For all of the six finalists,

0:24:00 > 0:24:04this will be an evaluation of their mental endurance.

0:24:04 > 0:24:08They can withdraw at any point of the exercise by saying the phrase,

0:24:08 > 0:24:09"no play".

0:24:16 > 0:24:19- OK, what's your name?- Claire Miller.

0:24:21 > 0:24:23Claire Miller? Is that right?

0:24:23 > 0:24:26OK, Claire, we need some information from you.

0:24:26 > 0:24:30'In the monitoring room, the recruits will be judged on every response.'

0:24:30 > 0:24:35I've been outside and I have come in here, this is like the nerve centre.

0:24:35 > 0:24:38You're monitoring everything that's going on.

0:24:38 > 0:24:39We've got a control room,

0:24:39 > 0:24:42the monitors up there with cameras in all the rooms.

0:24:42 > 0:24:47- Ultimately this is a very serious situation.- What's the process?

0:24:47 > 0:24:50They start off in this holding room, which is like a barn,

0:24:50 > 0:24:51and they get checked.

0:24:51 > 0:24:55- It's like a check-in, isn't it? They get checked in.- Yes.

0:24:55 > 0:24:56What's the next step?

0:24:56 > 0:24:58We take them out of there and process them

0:24:58 > 0:25:00during an admin phase.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03During the admin phase, they are actually still being interrogated.

0:25:03 > 0:25:05We're trying to see if they slip up.

0:25:08 > 0:25:14- Look at me.- Open your eyes, get used to the light. Can you see OK?

0:25:14 > 0:25:16I can't answer the question, sir.

0:25:16 > 0:25:18- What's your name?- Danny Bent. - Danny...?

0:25:18 > 0:25:21- Danny Bent.- Danny Bent.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24- Is that your full name?- Danny Bent.

0:25:24 > 0:25:27What's your occupation, Danny?

0:25:27 > 0:25:30I cannot answer that question, ma'am.

0:25:30 > 0:25:34'They have got four pieces of information they can give us.'

0:25:34 > 0:25:38That is their name, date of birth, religion and blood group.

0:25:38 > 0:25:43- When were you born?- 20th of the first, '79- So how old are you?

0:25:43 > 0:25:44I can't answer that question, ma'am.

0:25:44 > 0:25:46You've just given me your date of birth.

0:25:46 > 0:25:49What they're doing is basically only giving the information or

0:25:49 > 0:25:53answering, "I cannot answer that question, sir" or "ma'am,"

0:25:53 > 0:25:55depending who they're talking to.

0:25:55 > 0:25:59If the recruit answers a question which isn't one of the big four,

0:25:59 > 0:26:03they'll fail and not advance to the next stage.

0:26:06 > 0:26:09The first thing I want you to do is empty your pockets on your jacket.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11If you've anything in your pockets, give it to me.

0:26:11 > 0:26:15They're getting searched for any information or for weapons.

0:26:15 > 0:26:18One map. Anything else in your pockets?

0:26:18 > 0:26:21What we're trying to do is almost trick them

0:26:21 > 0:26:26'into what we want them not to do and that is to sign, speak,

0:26:26 > 0:26:31to say thank you or please because ultimately these are polite people.

0:26:32 > 0:26:34- Water bottle?- Do you want any water now?

0:26:39 > 0:26:40Do you want some water?

0:26:40 > 0:26:44- Erm, water.- You'd like some water?

0:26:44 > 0:26:46- Yes?- I could.

0:26:47 > 0:26:50'Curnyn has immediately let his guard slip.'

0:26:52 > 0:26:54Take your shirt off and pass it to me.

0:26:55 > 0:26:59They then get stripped down to underwear.

0:26:59 > 0:27:03With the military this would be completely stripped down.

0:27:03 > 0:27:06Shirt. Open your mouth wide.

0:27:06 > 0:27:07Head back slightly.

0:27:08 > 0:27:12We'll put them into paper suits and from there on

0:27:12 > 0:27:15we can move forward with the various ploys or approaches that

0:27:15 > 0:27:20we're going to do to see if we can try to extract information from them.

0:27:24 > 0:27:25Give me your hat thing,

0:27:25 > 0:27:28take it off your head. Take your hat thing off your head.

0:27:28 > 0:27:34Listen, OK, certain things need to be done here, you understand?

0:27:34 > 0:27:36I can't answer that question.

0:27:36 > 0:27:39To do that, you've to do some things that we say. So take your hat off.

0:27:39 > 0:27:42Are you going to take your hat off or not?

0:27:42 > 0:27:47- I can't answer that question, sir. - I'm not going to do it for you.

0:27:47 > 0:27:51It's your hat. Take your hat off.

0:27:52 > 0:27:55Good. Well done. Give it to me.

0:27:55 > 0:27:57Don't drop it on the floor.

0:27:58 > 0:28:01Gatenby's refusal to comply is noted.

0:28:01 > 0:28:03Obviously, this is an exercise.

0:28:03 > 0:28:07If they show that aggression or that attitude and behaviour in

0:28:07 > 0:28:10real life, it could be detrimental to them or their colleagues.

0:28:13 > 0:28:16Get yourself undressed, down to your underwear.

0:28:16 > 0:28:18Do you understand that?

0:28:18 > 0:28:20Come on, then, start taking your clothes off.

0:28:20 > 0:28:22Come on, let's have your coat.

0:28:25 > 0:28:27No play. No play. I'm finished.

0:28:30 > 0:28:32OK, wait. Wait there.

0:28:32 > 0:28:35'Murphy has refused to comply with the order.'

0:28:36 > 0:28:40- You have to have this on to go back out...- 'The psychological demands

0:28:40 > 0:28:43'seem to have taken their toll.'

0:28:43 > 0:28:45- No?- I'm not doing it.- OK.

0:28:45 > 0:28:47You understand, you called "no play",

0:28:47 > 0:28:49you've withdrawn from the exercise.

0:28:49 > 0:28:52That's the end of the process for you.

0:28:52 > 0:28:56I don't feel mentally strong enough to go through the whole

0:28:56 > 0:28:59night of interrogation. I don't like being humiliated.

0:28:59 > 0:29:01I don't like being belittled.

0:29:01 > 0:29:04If I am not comfortable with something, I'm not going to do it.

0:29:04 > 0:29:07I didn't feel comfortable with what they were asking me.

0:29:07 > 0:29:09I've given everything to last ten days

0:29:09 > 0:29:11and I'm proud of what I have achieved.

0:29:13 > 0:29:14So that's it for me.

0:29:14 > 0:29:17The exit of Murphy leaves only five recruits to fight it out.

0:29:25 > 0:29:28With the admin phase over,

0:29:28 > 0:29:31the recruits are subjected to sensory deprivation.

0:29:33 > 0:29:37Routinely manoeuvred into stress positions at timed intervals.

0:29:40 > 0:29:42Disorientating white noise is blasted at them.

0:29:43 > 0:29:47This is like no other challenge they've faced before.

0:29:50 > 0:29:55Having been awake for 22 hours, interrogation is set to intensify.

0:29:58 > 0:30:02Let's go back in it, hit them on the confrontation now.

0:30:02 > 0:30:06Whispering in one ear, whisper in the other. Shout at them.

0:30:06 > 0:30:10What do you think of that? Let's have a look at these faces.

0:30:10 > 0:30:14Let's have the feedback off of what we see what they're saying, yeah?

0:30:14 > 0:30:18The non-verbal communications is what we're going to get off of them.

0:30:19 > 0:30:21In actual SAS selection,

0:30:21 > 0:30:25these sessions take course of a matter of days rather than hours.

0:30:35 > 0:30:37OK, take your goggles off.

0:30:39 > 0:30:43Claire, look at me when I'm talking to you.

0:30:44 > 0:30:48- What's your nationality? - I can't answer that question, ma'am.

0:30:48 > 0:30:50- Where are you from? - I can't answer that question, ma'am.

0:30:50 > 0:30:54- What date of birth?- Sixth of February 1984.

0:30:54 > 0:30:58- So how old are you? - I can't answer that question, ma'am.

0:30:58 > 0:31:01You're freezing, do you want me to get a blanket for you?

0:31:01 > 0:31:04- I can't answer that question. - Stand the fuck up.

0:31:06 > 0:31:10Look up. Found something up there to look at, have you?

0:31:10 > 0:31:11I'M OVER HERE!

0:31:12 > 0:31:16Claire, get your fucking grid looking at me.

0:31:16 > 0:31:19You can take the piss out of this soft fuck as much as you want.

0:31:19 > 0:31:21You can sit there rubbing yourself

0:31:21 > 0:31:24and rocking like some silly little fuck.

0:31:24 > 0:31:27But I am proper and I do mean proper, Claire, so fucking help me.

0:31:29 > 0:31:31Stop taking the piss.

0:31:31 > 0:31:35Your fantasy world is going to stop and you're going to take a big

0:31:35 > 0:31:38fucking jump, RIGHT DOWN THE FUCKING HOLE!

0:31:38 > 0:31:41Look at me. LOOK THE FUCK AT ME!

0:31:41 > 0:31:45Think about it. Decision time.

0:31:45 > 0:31:48As the only remaining woman left in the competition,

0:31:48 > 0:31:51Miller holds her nerve well.

0:31:51 > 0:31:54Under the spotlight next is Brassington

0:31:54 > 0:31:56who will also have to battle food

0:31:56 > 0:32:00and sleep deprivation to remain strong under questioning.

0:32:00 > 0:32:02They're having a confrontation session,

0:32:02 > 0:32:06they might give away further information by not answering,

0:32:06 > 0:32:08"I can't answer that question".

0:32:08 > 0:32:12We're looking at their body language, eye movement.

0:32:12 > 0:32:15- What's your date of birth? - 11th of the fourth, '85.

0:32:15 > 0:32:20OK. Right. Wait there.

0:32:21 > 0:32:24Female interrogators often act friendly and try to get

0:32:24 > 0:32:29the subject chatting by flirting or using a softer side to questioning.

0:32:29 > 0:32:34Huw, I have got a small gift in the shape of...

0:32:34 > 0:32:37and it is small, I am afraid,

0:32:37 > 0:32:41extra creamy chocolate.

0:32:41 > 0:32:45Now, then...would you like a bit?

0:32:45 > 0:32:47I can't answer that, ma'am.

0:32:50 > 0:32:53Help yourself. Huw.

0:32:53 > 0:32:56Help yourself.

0:32:56 > 0:32:58Do you want some chocolate?

0:32:58 > 0:33:00- I can't answer that, ma'am. - No, no, no.

0:33:00 > 0:33:03- OK.- STAND UP!

0:33:03 > 0:33:05STAND THE FUCK UP!

0:33:06 > 0:33:10That was a simple question and a command, even you can do that.

0:33:10 > 0:33:15Oi, Jessica, I'm over here. There you go, that wasn't so fucking hard.

0:33:15 > 0:33:19You've got a fucking Welsh accent. Are you slow, wizz head?!

0:33:20 > 0:33:23- Which means what? What does that mean?- I can't answer...

0:33:23 > 0:33:25You're fucking Welsh!

0:33:25 > 0:33:28- I can't answer that, sir.- ZZZ... You can't even fucking speak.

0:33:28 > 0:33:30Have you been on the piss?

0:33:30 > 0:33:34- I can't answer that, sir.- MIMICS ACCENT: Oh, can't you, then, lad?

0:33:34 > 0:33:38Right. No more play time now. It's time you fucked off...

0:33:38 > 0:33:41Get your fucking hands down by your side.

0:33:41 > 0:33:44What's up? The nasty big man been shouting at you?

0:33:48 > 0:33:50I can't answer that, sir.

0:33:50 > 0:33:54If only you had the slightest clue how much you're answering and how much you're saying.

0:33:54 > 0:33:57Didn't they teach you anything at school, communication?

0:33:57 > 0:34:02Communi-fucking-cation. Only 15-20%, depending which book you read, is verbal.

0:34:02 > 0:34:03The rest is non-fucking-verbal.

0:34:03 > 0:34:07You can't keep a grip of your fucking face, can you?

0:34:07 > 0:34:11Because you're telling a complete fucking story with your face.

0:34:11 > 0:34:13But you don't get that, either, do you?

0:34:17 > 0:34:21A lot of the exercises over the past few days have been physically,

0:34:21 > 0:34:26mentally tiring but this is extra, it's a bit humiliating.

0:34:26 > 0:34:27They're going through the process,

0:34:27 > 0:34:31simulating what would happen for real. That's part of it.

0:34:31 > 0:34:35You're learning about yourself and how you handle this cultural and

0:34:35 > 0:34:39social humiliation and degradation, really, more than anything else.

0:34:43 > 0:34:46The final approach to break the recruits is to use

0:34:46 > 0:34:49their hunger against them with the food ploy.

0:34:49 > 0:34:54The strength of mind is targeted to see who would be selfish or share.

0:34:55 > 0:34:56How are you keeping?

0:34:57 > 0:35:04You know... life is about helping yourselves and helping each other.

0:35:04 > 0:35:07You've just got to get on with it.

0:35:07 > 0:35:09Don't you?

0:35:09 > 0:35:12I can't answer that question, sir.

0:35:12 > 0:35:15- Break, boss wants you now. - For fuck's sake.

0:35:18 > 0:35:20I'll back in a minute, all right?

0:35:20 > 0:35:22Don't go away.

0:35:22 > 0:35:26One of the instructors has left their mug of soup in the middle,

0:35:26 > 0:35:28we've left the blindfold off of two of them.

0:35:28 > 0:35:31We teach - have some but share it around.

0:35:35 > 0:35:37'Ohhh, gotcha!'

0:35:37 > 0:35:39Gotcha!

0:35:39 > 0:35:41Who was that, Chris?

0:35:41 > 0:35:44They shared it with the second person who didn't have a blindfold on.

0:35:44 > 0:35:48But there was no reason why they couldn't communicate and

0:35:48 > 0:35:52actually let everybody have some. There were no guards to reprimand them.

0:35:52 > 0:35:55Everybody would've got some of the soup.

0:35:55 > 0:35:56Get back in there quick.

0:35:58 > 0:36:02Actually, what we can then do is use that to exploit those individuals as

0:36:02 > 0:36:05to why he didn't share the soup with the rest of the team.

0:36:07 > 0:36:08Take your blindfolds off.

0:36:11 > 0:36:13Now, I bet you're wondering...

0:36:13 > 0:36:15why's he stood there? Huh?

0:36:17 > 0:36:19Why is he stood in front of you?

0:36:19 > 0:36:23You're stood there with the big, full tummy, aren't you?

0:36:23 > 0:36:28If there's one thing that pickles my piss it's selfishness.

0:36:28 > 0:36:30You know that, don't you?

0:36:30 > 0:36:32Doing your own thing, not looking after those around you.

0:36:32 > 0:36:34Look right in this boy's eyes now.

0:36:34 > 0:36:37He had an opportunity, just like you, wee man.

0:36:37 > 0:36:40Steaming-hot, piping cup of soup.

0:36:40 > 0:36:43I tell you, it's lovely. What did you do with that soup, son?

0:36:43 > 0:36:46- I'm afraid I can't answer that question, sir.- You're afraid?

0:36:46 > 0:36:49I fucking do suggest you probably are afraid.

0:36:49 > 0:36:51Oi! Shameful one.

0:36:52 > 0:36:55Where is there a time and place for selfishness?

0:36:55 > 0:36:57I'm afraid I can't answer that question, sir.

0:36:57 > 0:36:59You're afraid again, are you?

0:36:59 > 0:37:01What are you afraid of?

0:37:01 > 0:37:04Afraid of four young people who tried to do a good fucking job

0:37:04 > 0:37:06and get by as best they can?

0:37:06 > 0:37:10You get an opportunity to help those people and what do you do?

0:37:11 > 0:37:14Go on, son, I have to hear this. What do you do?

0:37:15 > 0:37:18Decisions to be made, choices we've to stand by and live.

0:37:18 > 0:37:23It's going to haunt you for the rest of your stinking little life.

0:37:23 > 0:37:25Goggles off, sit.

0:37:25 > 0:37:28Credibility wise, we've proven a point there.

0:37:28 > 0:37:32The all know and the guy with the beard was looking at number

0:37:32 > 0:37:34five with fucking daggers.

0:37:34 > 0:37:35OK. We're done, then.

0:37:43 > 0:37:46After enduring eight hours of interrogation,

0:37:46 > 0:37:50our recruits sense of time and reality has been broken down,

0:37:50 > 0:37:54leaving them mentally and physically fatigued.

0:37:56 > 0:37:58The group as a whole have actually been very good.

0:37:58 > 0:38:00One of them has been almost flawless.

0:38:00 > 0:38:02A couple of them have let themselves down on what

0:38:02 > 0:38:04we call non-verbal communications.

0:38:04 > 0:38:09It's how they stare or give an aggressive pose to the instructor.

0:38:09 > 0:38:13It might be they nod or shake their head. It might be they indicate

0:38:13 > 0:38:15with their hands or eyes

0:38:15 > 0:38:21and that's what we're looking for in an exercise like this.

0:38:21 > 0:38:25If this were a real incident, they would get punished for those

0:38:25 > 0:38:29actions which would be detrimental to them and their team.

0:38:29 > 0:38:31So they're putting everybody at risk.

0:38:32 > 0:38:36I was worried that I would either breakdown or say something

0:38:36 > 0:38:40I shouldn't have done. I don't think I did, I think I held pretty dead face.

0:38:41 > 0:38:46That was horrible. Cold and wet. It went on forever.

0:38:46 > 0:38:49I didn't think it was going to end.

0:38:49 > 0:38:53The constant disorientation and the constant fighting cold.

0:38:56 > 0:39:01It's...really hard to get it together.

0:39:04 > 0:39:08I wouldn't have signed up for that. That's just not...

0:39:08 > 0:39:12The physical challenge of this whole task that was horrible.

0:39:12 > 0:39:17That's probably the worst thing I've done throughout this whole process.

0:39:18 > 0:39:21As the final day of Ultimate Hell Week begins,

0:39:21 > 0:39:26the five recruits return to base having had no sleep for 26 hours.

0:39:29 > 0:39:33Good morning, how was your night? You smiling still?

0:39:33 > 0:39:39- Eight hours with a bag on your head. - Weird, really weird.

0:39:39 > 0:39:42Constant disorientation, you know, just really odd.

0:39:42 > 0:39:48- How did you find that?- Erm... Never done anything like that before.

0:39:48 > 0:39:50- No?- No.

0:39:50 > 0:39:52What about you, Brassington?

0:39:52 > 0:39:56- I didn't like it, not one bit. - What was the worst bit?

0:39:56 > 0:40:00The holding positions. My back was giving me...

0:40:02 > 0:40:05Definitely one of the most difficult things I've ever done.

0:40:05 > 0:40:09- I was so close to chucking it last night.- Were you?

0:40:09 > 0:40:12Oh, yeah, I was just like, "I can't handle this much more."

0:40:12 > 0:40:15- I just wanted to make the last one. - So knackered!

0:40:17 > 0:40:21- I'll leave you to it. - See you in a bit.

0:40:21 > 0:40:24What a change in mood to the previous meals we've witnessed.

0:40:26 > 0:40:27- Boo-ya!- Boo-ya!

0:40:29 > 0:40:32Absolutely shocked at the state of those five.

0:40:32 > 0:40:36They're completely shattered, both physically and mentally, and now

0:40:36 > 0:40:40it's going to be intriguing to see who cracked under interrogation.

0:40:51 > 0:40:54- Good morning.- Good morning, sir.

0:40:54 > 0:40:58I've just come in from a debrief from the interrogators...

0:40:59 > 0:41:02..and one of your members, Murphy,

0:41:02 > 0:41:04she didn't even begin, so she's gone.

0:41:04 > 0:41:10The interrogators, however, were very impressed by all of you.

0:41:10 > 0:41:13You managed to resist interrogation

0:41:13 > 0:41:18even better than a lot of soldiers would have done.

0:41:18 > 0:41:24However, two of you failed to receive an acceptable standard.

0:41:24 > 0:41:29The interrogators were worried that one of you had a bad attitude

0:41:29 > 0:41:32and was on the edge of aggression.

0:41:35 > 0:41:40And, in the real world, that could have got you harmed or killed.

0:41:40 > 0:41:43So, Gatenby, you're going home.

0:41:48 > 0:41:49I'm relieved that it's over now

0:41:49 > 0:41:52because I don't think my body could take much more of it.

0:41:52 > 0:41:54I'm aching, I've got cuts and bruises all over me

0:41:54 > 0:41:56but, at the same time, you know,

0:41:56 > 0:41:59when I wake up tomorrow and go back to my normal life,

0:41:59 > 0:42:00I'm going to miss it.

0:42:00 > 0:42:05The interrogators also found that one of you was giving away

0:42:05 > 0:42:07too much information.

0:42:08 > 0:42:13So, for that reason, Curnyn, you're also going home.

0:42:17 > 0:42:20I have to admit, I am at my limits now.

0:42:22 > 0:42:25I don't know if I'd have the energy to get that final trial done.

0:42:25 > 0:42:28So I can accept that.

0:42:28 > 0:42:31The rest of you, you've got one challenge left, OK?

0:42:31 > 0:42:33And it's the big one.

0:42:33 > 0:42:37Final challenge is an endurance march across the Brecon Beacons...

0:42:38 > 0:42:42..which is synonymous to The Regiment. Off you go.

0:42:43 > 0:42:48The last exercise for our three finalists is a 12km endurance run

0:42:48 > 0:42:51with questions to test their mental agility

0:42:51 > 0:42:54following the gruelling night of interrogation.

0:42:55 > 0:42:59This is a typical SAS selection-type exercise, isn't it?

0:42:59 > 0:43:02It's based on the SAS selection exercise. Of course, for real,

0:43:02 > 0:43:06the lads would be doing it over much longer distances, for many hours,

0:43:06 > 0:43:09during the day and during the night, carrying heavier weights.

0:43:09 > 0:43:11But this is going to be a test for them.

0:43:11 > 0:43:15It will be a test for them, yes, there's no doubt about that.

0:43:15 > 0:43:18Having consistently won previous races similar to this...

0:43:18 > 0:43:20Keep it up, Brassington. Well done.

0:43:20 > 0:43:23..Brassington must be deemed the frontrunner here.

0:43:24 > 0:43:26However, you cannot rule out Bent,

0:43:26 > 0:43:29who beat him on the NAVSOG run six days ago.

0:43:31 > 0:43:34As for Miller, she's yet to beat either of them

0:43:34 > 0:43:35on an individual challenge.

0:43:35 > 0:43:36Get on it.

0:43:39 > 0:43:42One of the reasons given for women not being in

0:43:42 > 0:43:44the British Special Forces is because of the amount

0:43:44 > 0:43:46they have to carry,

0:43:46 > 0:43:48so is Miller going to be at a disadvantage?

0:43:48 > 0:43:52There is this conventional view that women cannot meet the standards,

0:43:52 > 0:43:56cannot carry the weights, cannot do the distances that a man can do.

0:43:58 > 0:44:01This is something that Miller is now going to put to the test.

0:44:01 > 0:44:05- Three, two, one, go. Good luck.- Thank you.

0:44:05 > 0:44:07Starting at ten-minute intervals, Miller...

0:44:07 > 0:44:09Off you go.

0:44:09 > 0:44:14..Bent and Brassington must navigate between checkpoints,

0:44:14 > 0:44:16where their mental alertness will be tested.

0:44:17 > 0:44:21They must correctly answer questions on military practice

0:44:21 > 0:44:24that they've learned throughout Ultimate Hell Week.

0:44:24 > 0:44:28In failing to do so, they will incur time penalties on the run.

0:44:37 > 0:44:40What was the second line of the song that Gorillas taught you?

0:44:42 > 0:44:45We fight all the way.

0:44:45 > 0:44:47We fight all the way.

0:44:49 > 0:44:51We will fight all the way...

0:44:54 > 0:44:55..to...

0:44:56 > 0:45:01- We fight all the way.- We fight all the way.- To live another day.

0:45:01 > 0:45:05- To live another day.- Huh!- Huh!

0:45:05 > 0:45:06To live another day.

0:45:07 > 0:45:09To live another day.

0:45:09 > 0:45:10To stay another day.

0:45:10 > 0:45:11No, that's the wrong answer,

0:45:11 > 0:45:13I will have to hold you for five minutes now.

0:45:13 > 0:45:15OK.

0:45:15 > 0:45:17That's a major blow for Brassington.

0:45:17 > 0:45:20His progress is halted as Miller and Bent proceed.

0:45:24 > 0:45:28For Miller, she's the last women standing in the competition.

0:45:28 > 0:45:31A feat that has surpassed all her expectations

0:45:31 > 0:45:33when she began this journey.

0:45:33 > 0:45:36I guess at the beginning I didn't really know what to expect or

0:45:36 > 0:45:38how I thought I'd get on.

0:45:38 > 0:45:42I just wanted to show that females can at least keep up with the guys.

0:45:42 > 0:45:46To be one out of three at the end in the final three, yeah, I think

0:45:46 > 0:45:48it's nice to show that a female can be here.

0:45:48 > 0:45:50Front and centre, move. Move!

0:45:50 > 0:45:53When the Navy Seals announced my name was going to be the leader,

0:45:53 > 0:45:55I was very nervous.

0:45:55 > 0:45:58- You screw this up, it falls on you.- Yes, sir!

0:46:00 > 0:46:02I sort of felt like I wanted to keep a low profile to begin with,

0:46:02 > 0:46:06because if you're put as leader, the potential to mess things up

0:46:06 > 0:46:08and potentially be dropped really early on is higher.

0:46:08 > 0:46:10Get in the water.

0:46:10 > 0:46:12It was tough and great at the same time

0:46:12 > 0:46:15to know that you could get through that.

0:46:15 > 0:46:18Jason, the Australian SAS drill sergeant said...

0:46:18 > 0:46:22Miller, probably one of the toughest females I've ever seen.

0:46:22 > 0:46:26That's, I think, the complement of this series, for me.

0:46:28 > 0:46:30One of the things I've most struggled with

0:46:30 > 0:46:32is carrying heavy weight.

0:46:32 > 0:46:34Where you had to carry the bag in your arms

0:46:34 > 0:46:37rather than on your back, I ended up not placing too well

0:46:37 > 0:46:40and feeling like I might well be out of the process.

0:46:40 > 0:46:42Fight him off, roadkill, go!

0:46:42 > 0:46:45Krav Maga was definitely a low point for me.

0:46:45 > 0:46:48Murphy definitely wasn't just standing there, letting me hit her.

0:46:48 > 0:46:50She was swinging at me big time.

0:46:51 > 0:46:52One of my biggest fears coming in

0:46:52 > 0:46:55was that I would have a sort of mental breakdown

0:46:55 > 0:46:58or that I just wouldn't have the willpower to keep going.

0:46:58 > 0:47:01At no point during this process have I thought I want to leave.

0:47:01 > 0:47:03I've stayed completely strong throughout

0:47:03 > 0:47:04and I'm proud of myself for that.

0:47:10 > 0:47:14At the second checkpoint, Bent progresses without hesitation.

0:47:14 > 0:47:19- What is the name of the martial art taught by the Yaman...- Krav Maga.

0:47:22 > 0:47:26Right from day one, he stood out from the rest of the recruits.

0:47:27 > 0:47:30Turned up in flowery shoes, flowery shirt.

0:47:30 > 0:47:32Flowers, turn the other way.

0:47:32 > 0:47:36I've turned from happy hugger into mean machine.

0:47:36 > 0:47:37Don't mess.

0:47:37 > 0:47:39Some of you may think you know what hell looks like,

0:47:39 > 0:47:42you have no fucking idea.

0:47:42 > 0:47:45Ultimate Hell Week has been ultimate hell.

0:47:45 > 0:47:47Legs up, 45 degrees.

0:47:47 > 0:47:50One of the things was getting us into stress positions

0:47:50 > 0:47:53and I am definitely not one of the best press-up people in this group.

0:47:53 > 0:47:55My abs aren't the strongest.

0:47:55 > 0:47:57By the end of it, my body was shaking so much

0:47:57 > 0:47:59that my feet were actually coming off the ground.

0:47:59 > 0:48:01I don't even know what that shaking means but

0:48:01 > 0:48:03I was in some sort of complete agony.

0:48:04 > 0:48:07My proudest moment was winning the race

0:48:07 > 0:48:09with the Filipino special forces.

0:48:09 > 0:48:12I got back and I thought I was going to be cheered in as I go

0:48:12 > 0:48:14because I'd won it and I get there and he says...

0:48:14 > 0:48:16I need you to give me 100 burpees.

0:48:16 > 0:48:18- And I just thought, "Oh, God." - Start.

0:48:19 > 0:48:21It was my glory moment

0:48:21 > 0:48:24and I think that was the first time that people looked up like,

0:48:24 > 0:48:28"Whoa, hold on a minute, he can actually do something."

0:48:28 > 0:48:30I've learnt that you can just take on anything

0:48:30 > 0:48:33and it's not just the physicality, it's the mental strength.

0:48:33 > 0:48:36It means that the next one you think, "Well, I overcame

0:48:36 > 0:48:38"the last one, I can probably overcome this one as well."

0:48:38 > 0:48:40And it just kind of slowly triggers

0:48:40 > 0:48:42and, by the end of it, you feel like you've run through a wall.

0:48:42 > 0:48:44It's really, really amazing.

0:48:44 > 0:48:47It's made me wonder whether I could actually join the special forces

0:48:47 > 0:48:49because, the people we've met, they feel like they're superheroes.

0:48:49 > 0:48:52I mean, these people have been through what we've been through

0:48:52 > 0:48:53times 100.

0:48:53 > 0:48:56I guess that's how it works in war.

0:48:56 > 0:48:58They have a bit longer than us guys but they slowly,

0:48:58 > 0:49:02slowly build it so that, when that wartime comes, they're ready for it.

0:49:02 > 0:49:05I definitely came here with that idea of winning.

0:49:05 > 0:49:06We've got one event left.

0:49:06 > 0:49:09It could make or break who wins the show.

0:49:09 > 0:49:12If I win it, it's going to be absolutely amazing.

0:49:19 > 0:49:21Under the watchful gaze of Bob,

0:49:21 > 0:49:26a former member of the SAS, Miller completes her endurance run.

0:49:26 > 0:49:30But, of course, has no idea of her time or how the others are doing.

0:49:34 > 0:49:37He said whoever came in first would all sit outside the parade ground,

0:49:37 > 0:49:39sit on our bag until everyone came in.

0:49:41 > 0:49:44I've never pushed myself that hard in my life.

0:49:49 > 0:49:52Approaching the second checkpoint is Brassington who, after

0:49:52 > 0:49:57incurring an earlier penalty, can't afford to lose any further time.

0:49:57 > 0:49:59All the way in, all the way in.

0:50:01 > 0:50:04While you're doing that, just listen to me, OK?

0:50:04 > 0:50:07What is the name of the martial art taught by

0:50:07 > 0:50:08Yamam special-force expert Itay Gill?

0:50:10 > 0:50:12Fight him, stab him, stab him!

0:50:12 > 0:50:13Erm, it is...

0:50:15 > 0:50:16Er...

0:50:16 > 0:50:18Hold on a minute, let me think.

0:50:21 > 0:50:24- Erm.- Martial art, have a think, what's the name of the martial art?

0:50:27 > 0:50:29HE MUTTERS

0:50:29 > 0:50:31OK, five minutes' penalty from now.

0:50:31 > 0:50:34With no response given, he's timed out

0:50:34 > 0:50:37and incurs another five-minute penalty.

0:50:42 > 0:50:46Meanwhile, Bent finishes his run and joins Miller outside camp.

0:50:53 > 0:50:55200 burpees.

0:50:55 > 0:50:56MILLER CHUCKLES

0:50:58 > 0:51:00BENT GROANS

0:51:05 > 0:51:06Ah!

0:51:06 > 0:51:08Your back?

0:51:21 > 0:51:24- Brassington resumes his race.- Go.

0:51:24 > 0:51:27He's been the fastest runner in the competition during the last

0:51:27 > 0:51:3011 days, so he's every chance of making up the lost time.

0:51:34 > 0:51:37This experience, without a shadow of a doubt, has been

0:51:37 > 0:51:39the hardest thing I've ever done.

0:51:39 > 0:51:42Any challenge I approach exactly the same way, like I've always done.

0:51:42 > 0:51:45Flat-out and with snot all over my face,

0:51:45 > 0:51:49I've got one way of doing it and that is giving everything I've got.

0:51:51 > 0:51:53I pushed my body through new boundaries

0:51:53 > 0:51:56but boundaries are always up here, you know?

0:51:56 > 0:51:59Once you break one, it's no longer there any more.

0:51:59 > 0:52:00You know you can do it.

0:52:00 > 0:52:02I've hit so many of those, it's unbelievable.

0:52:06 > 0:52:09My proudest moment during the process has been the obstacle course

0:52:09 > 0:52:10with the Spetsnaz.

0:52:10 > 0:52:12You had to swim through a river,

0:52:12 > 0:52:15we were going under electric wire.

0:52:15 > 0:52:17They was playing mind games as well at the same time.

0:52:17 > 0:52:21He said it was one lap, you did one lap all-out and he said...

0:52:21 > 0:52:24Brassington, everything you did, repeat one more time.

0:52:24 > 0:52:25"Just one more lap. Go."

0:52:27 > 0:52:29And you had to go again, it was torture

0:52:29 > 0:52:32but winning it was fantastic.

0:52:32 > 0:52:35My lowest moment throughout this whole process was

0:52:35 > 0:52:36during the Australian SAS,

0:52:36 > 0:52:41we were building boxes and trying to get a stretcher over the river.

0:52:41 > 0:52:44I got it in the face and, hopefully, no proper damage.

0:52:44 > 0:52:47My tooth's all right, my nose is buggered anyway.

0:52:47 > 0:52:50It's just my lip that's had the worst of the damage.

0:52:52 > 0:52:55The reason I keep going is I don't want to be the guy that just

0:52:55 > 0:52:58drops out and says, "I don't want to do this any more."

0:52:58 > 0:53:00I just give it all and, thankfully, it's got me to last day

0:53:00 > 0:53:02and I'm very proud of that.

0:53:06 > 0:53:08THEY LAUGH AND SHOUT

0:53:08 > 0:53:11It defies the logic that I've set up in my head regarding this

0:53:11 > 0:53:14whole event that there be a winner because, with regard to

0:53:14 > 0:53:18there being a victor today, I'd prefer that all three

0:53:18 > 0:53:21of us passed that finish line together

0:53:21 > 0:53:22and we all go away as winners.

0:53:40 > 0:53:45OK, guys, well done. These are the timings of your endurance run today.

0:53:46 > 0:53:48Brassington,

0:53:48 > 0:53:52two hours, 48 minutes and 40 seconds.

0:53:53 > 0:53:55Bent,

0:53:55 > 0:53:58two hours, 29 minutes and 30 seconds.

0:53:58 > 0:54:00And, Miller,

0:54:00 > 0:54:03two hours, 22 minutes and 45 seconds.

0:54:05 > 0:54:08Remember, it's not the fastest time that we're after.

0:54:08 > 0:54:10What I'm going to do now is I'm going to go away

0:54:10 > 0:54:14and speak to the people that know you best, OK? The DS staff,

0:54:14 > 0:54:18these are the people that have lived and worked with you for the past 12 days.

0:54:18 > 0:54:20I'm going to have a chat with them and, together, we're going to

0:54:20 > 0:54:25decide who is going to walk off this parade ground as the winner.

0:54:25 > 0:54:27Dismissed.

0:54:31 > 0:54:35Bob, you've had the final. Have you been impressed by them?

0:54:35 > 0:54:37I've been very impressed by them.

0:54:37 > 0:54:41They remind me of when I was on my special-forces training.

0:54:41 > 0:54:42They all wanted to win.

0:54:42 > 0:54:45The motivation was there, the stamina was there

0:54:45 > 0:54:47and I'm very impressed with them.

0:54:47 > 0:54:50Luke and Lee, you've worked with the recruits

0:54:50 > 0:54:52all the way through this experience.

0:54:52 > 0:54:53What's your assessment of them?

0:54:53 > 0:54:56We've not been running on any separate standards for females

0:54:56 > 0:54:59and males, so the fact that Miller's still here at the end is fantastic.

0:54:59 > 0:55:03Yeah, I think we've got the right three at the end.

0:55:03 > 0:55:06Very strong individual spirit in the competitive

0:55:06 > 0:55:10component of getting through but you also saw the team spirit,

0:55:10 > 0:55:12particularly the small-group spirit coming out.

0:55:12 > 0:55:15Are you surprised at how Miller's performed?

0:55:15 > 0:55:18Because, in the special forces, there's not too many women.

0:55:18 > 0:55:24I'm very surprised but after I've seen her...over the past two days,

0:55:24 > 0:55:28she has definitely changed my mind on certain things, that's for sure.

0:55:28 > 0:55:29Bent, when he turned up,

0:55:29 > 0:55:32I don't think anybody expected what we was getting.

0:55:32 > 0:55:35He had flowers in his shoes, he had a funny vest on and a cap

0:55:35 > 0:55:38and he's still here. Has he exceeded your expectations?

0:55:38 > 0:55:41Yeah, never judge a book by its cover, as they say.

0:55:41 > 0:55:42I did. For sure, I did.

0:55:42 > 0:55:46But I'm glad he's here because, throughout this whole series,

0:55:46 > 0:55:48you know, he has been improving himself as well

0:55:48 > 0:55:50and he's showed us all that he

0:55:50 > 0:55:53deserves to be where he is now, for sure.

0:55:53 > 0:55:55He's not the sort of person that you would think

0:55:55 > 0:55:58would be in the special forces, you know, looking at his beard

0:55:58 > 0:56:01and this kind of thing, you know, but he's done really well.

0:56:01 > 0:56:02He's come through.

0:56:02 > 0:56:04What strengths have you seen in Brassington?

0:56:04 > 0:56:07It's his ability to crack on even when he's been injured.

0:56:07 > 0:56:10He took quite a hefty hit to the mouth with the log.

0:56:10 > 0:56:12He just cracked on.

0:56:12 > 0:56:15And throughout this whole evolution, he's been improving

0:56:15 > 0:56:19and improving and showing that grit and determination

0:56:19 > 0:56:21to see it through.

0:56:21 > 0:56:25From what I've seen of him, I can't see any flaws in him at all.

0:56:25 > 0:56:28He's very fit, very aggressive, from what I can see.

0:56:28 > 0:56:33He's just the sort of person that you'd want in the special forces.

0:56:33 > 0:56:38And then if I was to ask you all to pick a top recruit, who would it be?

0:56:38 > 0:56:42- The Machine, for me.- Yeah.- Easy, easy.- All day long, all day long.

0:56:43 > 0:56:47There's only one thing left to do, and that's go and tell them.

0:56:47 > 0:56:49Let's go see them.

0:56:49 > 0:56:52Time to find out the identity of the Machine.

0:57:04 > 0:57:08At ease. I'm your new drill sergeant.

0:57:08 > 0:57:11I'm from the People's Republic of Preston.

0:57:11 > 0:57:14- I'm not here to drill you. - Good news.

0:57:14 > 0:57:17When we started this, this parade ground was full

0:57:17 > 0:57:20and now there's just three of you left.

0:57:21 > 0:57:24You must feel a massive sense of achievement of what's happened.

0:57:25 > 0:57:29But, however, you do know there's going to have to be a winner.

0:57:31 > 0:57:35And they described this person as a leader from the start.

0:57:37 > 0:57:41Someone who's shown guts, determination,

0:57:41 > 0:57:44and strength beyond their size.

0:57:45 > 0:57:50The winner of Special Forces Ultimate Hell Week...

0:57:51 > 0:57:53..is Miller.

0:57:53 > 0:57:55Congratulations, Miller.

0:58:01 > 0:58:03Special Forces Ultimate Hell Week was utter hell.

0:58:06 > 0:58:11She absolutely deserved it. She nailed everything from day one.

0:58:11 > 0:58:12Yeah, I guess I've survived and conquered it.

0:58:12 > 0:58:14Yeah, it's been amazing.

0:58:14 > 0:58:16Thank you very much. Cheers.

0:58:16 > 0:58:18That thing must weigh half her weight

0:58:18 > 0:58:22and she ran an unbelievable time, so hats off to her.

0:58:26 > 0:58:30A worthy winner has emerged from TV's most extreme boot camp...

0:58:32 > 0:58:36..in what has been Special Forces Ultimate Hell Week.
