7:24:28 > 7:24:35.

7:24:40 > 7:24:45The winner of the gold medal and the champion golfer for the year with a score of 272, Ian Baker-Finch.

7:24:45 > 7:24:48CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

7:24:48 > 7:24:51In the world of golf, this is The Open Championship.

7:24:51 > 7:24:55We from America, the United States, we have our Open Championship

7:24:55 > 7:24:58and every person that lives in the United States

7:24:58 > 7:25:00considers that THE Open.

7:25:00 > 7:25:03But we in golf know that THE Open is this one.

7:25:03 > 7:25:06It's muggy and overcast and I'd say about five knots.

7:25:06 > 7:25:08Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.

7:25:08 > 7:25:12Welcome to The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, Muirfield,

7:25:12 > 7:25:16for the first day's play of the 121st Open Championship.

7:25:16 > 7:25:20This is a game number one. On the tee, Paul Way.

7:25:20 > 7:25:22APPLAUSE

7:25:27 > 7:25:29Hello, Dave.

7:25:29 > 7:25:31Got Paul Way, first tee this morning -

7:25:31 > 7:25:34do you want it in colour or black and white?

7:25:35 > 7:25:38The Open Championship is now a massive entity,

7:25:38 > 7:25:41a happening each July that takes months to create

7:25:41 > 7:25:44and is the result of much careful planning.

7:25:44 > 7:25:47As many as 40,000 people a day may come and watch.

7:25:47 > 7:25:50Around the world, many millions pause this week and take note

7:25:50 > 7:25:54of the goings-on in what is, after all, the game's premier event.

7:25:58 > 7:26:00All very different to when Harold Hilton

7:26:00 > 7:26:03won of the first of Muirfield's Opens just 100 years ago.

7:26:03 > 7:26:05What would he make of the Open today

7:26:05 > 7:26:07and, indeed, the assembled cast?

7:26:09 > 7:26:11The main hope of the home crowd is Nick Faldo.

7:26:11 > 7:26:15He of the steely determination, but also of the all-round game

7:26:15 > 7:26:17to handle the questions posed by links and golf

7:26:17 > 7:26:19at the very highest level.

7:26:24 > 7:26:27Fred Couples, in so many ways the opposite of Faldo.

7:26:30 > 7:26:32He's finished well up in recent Opens,

7:26:32 > 7:26:34and with his Masters victory in April,

7:26:34 > 7:26:36has proved that he too can win.

7:26:36 > 7:26:38Then there is Seve.

7:26:38 > 7:26:42It's getting on for 20 years since he first burst on the scene

7:26:42 > 7:26:44and maybe the well is running a little bit dry.

7:26:44 > 7:26:46But you can never count him out.

7:26:50 > 7:26:53Muirfield is, for many, the fairest

7:26:53 > 7:26:56and some would even say the best of all the Championship venues.

7:26:56 > 7:26:59With each hole running in a different direction,

7:26:59 > 7:27:04the golfer is constantly faced with an ever-changing variety of shot.

7:27:04 > 7:27:07Wide fairways and big greens may seem generous targets,

7:27:07 > 7:27:09but danger lurks on every hole,

7:27:09 > 7:27:13especially for those whose approach to golf is all-out attack...

7:27:18 > 7:27:21- Oh, well. Life goes on, right?- Yeah.

7:27:21 > 7:27:22..whether it be the elegant

7:27:22 > 7:27:25and almost old-fashioned power of a Greg Norman...

7:27:27 > 7:27:30..or the brash, hi-tech slamming of a John Daly.

7:27:32 > 7:27:34That's all I've got.

7:27:42 > 7:27:44Yeah.

7:27:44 > 7:27:48Mark Calcavecchia, himself once the crash, bang, wallop specialist of golf,

7:27:48 > 7:27:50learnt to harness his power to the point

7:27:50 > 7:27:52when he could win this championship.

7:27:57 > 7:27:58But clearly

7:27:58 > 7:28:02he thinks that Daly's driver might be better off in other hands.

7:28:02 > 7:28:05- I'm going to get another one! - You don't need this one!

7:28:05 > 7:28:07That's pure.

7:28:13 > 7:28:16But whatever else, they are not ignoring the strongman of golf.

7:28:18 > 7:28:21Calcavecchia was one of those out early.

7:28:21 > 7:28:23Two good shots to the opening hole left him

7:28:23 > 7:28:27with this little putt for the first birdie of the Championship.

7:28:31 > 7:28:33APPLAUSE

7:28:38 > 7:28:41I can see that it's not showing me the call has been accepted.

7:28:41 > 7:28:43I'm going to put the phone down and I'm going to hear you

7:28:43 > 7:28:45through the headphones, OK?

7:28:45 > 7:28:49All the Australians except for Peter Senior are at level par.

7:28:49 > 7:28:53He's one over. And Faldo bogeyed the first.

7:28:53 > 7:28:55Defending champion Ian Baker-Finch

7:28:55 > 7:28:58has clearly enjoyed his year in the spotlight.

7:28:59 > 7:29:02While after many years of waiting, the new US Open champion,

7:29:02 > 7:29:05Tom Kite, is just setting out to enjoy his.

7:29:05 > 7:29:10..more difficult days. I need to stress the field out a little bit.

7:29:18 > 7:29:21There really is very little of the countryside around here

7:29:21 > 7:29:25that isn't in some way connected with the game of golf.

7:29:25 > 7:29:29Muirfield is the jewel in this part of Scotland's golfing crown

7:29:29 > 7:29:32with its 200 or so devilish works of art

7:29:32 > 7:29:34that are its first line of defence.

7:29:34 > 7:29:38It will be skill out of sand as much as a deft putting touch

7:29:38 > 7:29:40that may well decide this championship.

7:29:43 > 7:29:45And it might also have been one of the reasons

7:29:45 > 7:29:49why Gary Player's first win in the Open was here in 1959.

7:29:49 > 7:29:53He may even yet harbour dreams of becoming the oldest champion.

7:29:56 > 7:29:57I was asking Scott

7:29:57 > 7:30:01if you could try to dig out something I'd done on Trevino.

7:30:01 > 7:30:03I just wondered if you had had any joy with it?

7:30:05 > 7:30:08..and stop it fairly quickly.

7:30:08 > 7:30:09Very difficult.

7:30:12 > 7:30:14Looks like going over the back.

7:30:14 > 7:30:17Instead of that, it goes straight into the middle of the hole

7:30:17 > 7:30:20and disappears like a rabbit on the second bounce.

7:30:21 > 7:30:25Trevino, too, is back, revisiting scenes of former glories.

7:30:28 > 7:30:30As is Nicklaus

7:30:30 > 7:30:34who, like Player, won his first Open here and then went on

7:30:34 > 7:30:38to collect a couple more across the waters in the Kingdom of Fife.

7:30:41 > 7:30:43Muirfield, though, is his favourite,

7:30:43 > 7:30:46and 1992 marks 30 consecutive appearances

7:30:46 > 7:30:47in the Open Championship.

7:30:52 > 7:30:56None will ever challenge Nicklaus's haul of major titles,

7:30:56 > 7:30:59but of all the players in the field today, Faldo most closely

7:30:59 > 7:31:03reminds one of his single-minded pursuit of the major championships.

7:31:04 > 7:31:07A dropped shot at the first only acted as a spur

7:31:07 > 7:31:10and he duly went to the turn in 33, three under par.

7:31:12 > 7:31:16More birdies coming home and then this great approach to the 14th.

7:31:28 > 7:31:30APPLAUSE

7:31:32 > 7:31:35It seemed that the championship lead was his for the taking.

7:31:35 > 7:31:37But that miss was the end of his run.

7:31:37 > 7:31:40Just pars from then on in for a round of 66.

7:31:43 > 7:31:44Paul Azinger was the man who, perhaps,

7:31:44 > 7:31:47should have won here in 1987.

7:31:47 > 7:31:49Once again, he played well,

7:31:49 > 7:31:52but this time faded somewhat over the final two rounds.

7:31:55 > 7:31:57But on this opening day,

7:31:57 > 7:32:00it was one of Azinger's Ryder Cup colleagues, Steve Pate,

7:32:00 > 7:32:04who, in his own peculiar way, organised himself around Muirfield

7:32:04 > 7:32:08in a meagre 64 to take the early lead.

7:32:08 > 7:32:10Others would have given much for that score,

7:32:10 > 7:32:13but came undone in a number of different ways.

7:32:20 > 7:32:23But one of the great charms of Muirfield is that while it can

7:32:23 > 7:32:27extract dire penalties, it can also hand out the occasional present.

7:32:29 > 7:32:30CHEERING

7:32:32 > 7:32:34And not only on the greens.

7:32:38 > 7:32:40CHEERING

7:32:40 > 7:32:43Well, when you've been with Seve for a year or two,

7:32:43 > 7:32:45there's not a lot you haven't seen.

7:32:47 > 7:32:50But for Paul McGinley, it will be a memory to treasure.

7:32:51 > 7:32:55Kevin Jones was one of those romantic stories that pop up

7:32:55 > 7:32:58so often during the early rounds of Open Championships.

7:32:59 > 7:33:02So, too, was the performance of Daren Lee,

7:33:02 > 7:33:04an amateur from Wanstead in Essex.

7:33:04 > 7:33:08Not yet capped for England, he went round in 68.

7:33:08 > 7:33:11But it was his battle with ME that caught the media's imagination.

7:33:14 > 7:33:18I'm actually having injections once a month.

7:33:18 > 7:33:21It's like other people's immunity and it helps just to build me up.

7:33:21 > 7:33:24It's OK. I think I've got used to having glands

7:33:24 > 7:33:26and a sore throat all the time, you know.

7:33:26 > 7:33:28I've got used to that.

7:33:28 > 7:33:31Every now and again I get it back. Yesterday I wasn't too good again.

7:33:31 > 7:33:36I had a lot of glands and a sore throat and felt generally achey.

7:33:36 > 7:33:40I had a good night's sleep last night and felt good today.

7:33:42 > 7:33:45Another Lee, Lee Janzen, from Austin, Minnesota.

7:33:48 > 7:33:50He was one of a number of relatively unknown Americans

7:33:50 > 7:33:54to outshine the more established stars.

7:33:54 > 7:33:58Perhaps not quite so surprising was the 66 of Ernie Els.

7:33:58 > 7:34:01This giant young South African had carried all before him

7:34:01 > 7:34:04on his own circuit during our winter months,

7:34:04 > 7:34:07and this week was to reproduce much of that form.

7:34:08 > 7:34:11But it was another unknown American who was to have the media barons

7:34:11 > 7:34:15reaching for their tour handbooks as he headed for a first-round 66.

7:34:15 > 7:34:18..Didn't know if it was the same John Cook...

7:34:18 > 7:34:20Remember there was a John Cook from the UK?

7:34:27 > 7:34:28..John Cook.

7:34:31 > 7:34:37He missed the third cut after 54 holes, so he's played three rounds.

7:34:40 > 7:34:43Another American, Andy McGee, shot a 67.

7:34:43 > 7:34:47But neither he nor Cook attracted enormous media attention.

7:34:49 > 7:34:53You know, the expense for me to come over always from the West Coast,

7:34:53 > 7:34:56it was a lot, and at the time I wasn't really made of money.

7:34:56 > 7:35:01You know, I didn't have the confidence in my game

7:35:01 > 7:35:05to where I could come over and spend a couple of days and try to qualify.

7:35:05 > 7:35:09I have no problem with that, I just never felt that great about doing it.

7:35:09 > 7:35:13No, the press were more interested in the deeds of the great names.

7:35:13 > 7:35:17Following hot on the heels of Faldo's 66 came Ian Woosnam

7:35:17 > 7:35:19with a round of 65.

7:35:19 > 7:35:21Many believe he is now ready

7:35:21 > 7:35:23to add the Open to his Masters win at Augusta.

7:35:23 > 7:35:27Along with Faldo, he is the main hope of the home supporters.

7:35:32 > 7:35:35But it's little slip-ups like his dropped shot at the last

7:35:35 > 7:35:37that undo so much good work.

7:35:37 > 7:35:41But for that, he would have had a share of the overnight lead.

7:35:42 > 7:35:44There's not much inspires me, no.

7:35:44 > 7:35:48I'm not getting inspirational from looking at the sea or anything,

7:35:48 > 7:35:50no, it doesn't inspire me.

7:35:50 > 7:35:54Well, with a round of 65, Gordon Brand Jr must have been getting

7:35:54 > 7:35:58inspiration from somewhere, even if it wasn't from the press themselves.

7:35:59 > 7:36:01Nor your articles.

7:36:01 > 7:36:03LAUGHTER

7:36:03 > 7:36:07But it was this man, who only needs the open to give himself a full set

7:36:07 > 7:36:11of Majors, who came in late to grab a share of the lead, Raymond Floyd.

7:36:11 > 7:36:17I hit a five iron about 12 feet past and made the putt for birdie.

7:36:21 > 7:36:24And made the putt for birdie.

7:36:26 > 7:36:27And made that for par.

7:36:29 > 7:36:33The two-iron second that plugged in the wall of the bunker.

7:36:33 > 7:36:35Very, very bad lie.

7:36:35 > 7:36:40Very difficult shot and I played a marvellous explosion to get it about 10 feet...

7:36:46 > 7:36:48Well, you can never get away from politics.

7:36:48 > 7:36:51But you don't have to take them seriously all the time.

7:36:51 > 7:36:55Someone might have told Mr Perot that during the third week in July,

7:36:55 > 7:36:58some people have other matters on their mind.

7:36:58 > 7:37:01For them, the Open is just as important as anything else

7:37:01 > 7:37:03that's happening in the world.

7:37:03 > 7:37:06Well, some Americans did manage to have a nice day.

7:37:06 > 7:37:09In all, 35 players broke 70.

7:37:09 > 7:37:11But one of them wasn't the current Masters champion

7:37:11 > 7:37:14and world number one Fred Couples.

7:37:14 > 7:37:17How he would love to find the putting touch that brought him

7:37:17 > 7:37:20within striking distance of victory at Birkdale last year.

7:37:20 > 7:37:24CHEERING

7:37:46 > 7:37:51But it was not to be, and an awful 78 on day two, finishing with

7:37:51 > 7:37:55an ugly seven, led to the embarrassment of missing the cut.

7:37:57 > 7:38:01After an opening 74, John Daly was in need of inspiration

7:38:01 > 7:38:04if he was to survive for the final two days.

7:38:10 > 7:38:13While some came and went,

7:38:13 > 7:38:16others rode their luck to make the halfway cut.

7:38:20 > 7:38:23But for the matching brothers Strange,

7:38:23 > 7:38:26Muirfield 1992 was just a two-round affair.

7:38:26 > 7:38:30Just about then, Faldo was on the point of making his move.

7:38:30 > 7:38:32This, his second at the par five 9th.

7:38:32 > 7:38:37I think I had 228 to the front, plus whatever...

7:38:37 > 7:38:41about another 15, 12, whatever, 13 to the pin.

7:38:41 > 7:38:45I tried a low draw in, and it just came out like a rocket.

7:38:49 > 7:38:53So this putt for an eagle three and a share of the lead.

7:38:57 > 7:38:59And that was to be the start of a purple patch.

7:38:59 > 7:39:03An eagle and four birdies in the space of seven holes.

7:39:03 > 7:39:06Elsewhere, a little Latin wizardry was helping

7:39:06 > 7:39:12Olazabal to second-round 67 and a halfway total of 5 under par.

7:39:13 > 7:39:16But while Seve still showed odd flashes of the old magic,

7:39:16 > 7:39:19it wasn't enough and he was to miss the cut.

7:39:23 > 7:39:26I work for Allsport. David Cannon, he did those.

7:39:26 > 7:39:33- Any chance I can get a copy of this?- Yes, sure. I'll tell Dave.- OK.

7:39:33 > 7:39:36Nothing went right for Montgomerie either.

7:39:36 > 7:39:38And he too had the weekend off.

7:39:40 > 7:39:42But the Faldo machine rolled on.

7:39:42 > 7:39:463 at 10, 3 at 12, 3 at 14 and, again, at 15.

7:39:50 > 7:39:54And other home-grown players were bringing cheer to what was to be

7:39:54 > 7:39:55the largest crowd of the week.

7:39:55 > 7:39:59Malcolm Mackenzie, his tee shot to the short 13th.

7:39:59 > 7:40:02The basis of a fine round of 67 was his outward 32.

7:40:02 > 7:40:05And on his way to a 36 hole total of four under.

7:40:07 > 7:40:10Faldo for yet another birdie. And the first hint of daylight

7:40:10 > 7:40:12between himself and the rest of the field.

7:40:19 > 7:40:23For Ian Woosnam, too many errors all added up to a round of 73.

7:40:23 > 7:40:26And Floyd could find nothing on a breezy second morning

7:40:26 > 7:40:29and returned a level par 71.

7:40:29 > 7:40:32But Ernie Els, who many might have thought would fade

7:40:32 > 7:40:35in such exalted company, added a 69 to his opening 66.

7:40:41 > 7:40:43The putting has got a new stroke this week.

7:40:43 > 7:40:46It's obviously been working well.

7:40:50 > 7:40:52The amateur Daren Lee, with dad caddying

7:40:52 > 7:40:55and Mum in the crowd, put together a fine 72

7:40:55 > 7:40:58to become the sole survivor from the unpaid ranks,

7:40:58 > 7:41:02what with the amateur champion Gary Wolstenholme failing to survive.

7:41:02 > 7:41:06With five Open titles to his credit and one of them here at Muirfield,

7:41:06 > 7:41:10Tom Watson couldn't make it to the last two days either.

7:41:12 > 7:41:14But no such problem for Faldo.

7:41:25 > 7:41:29Donnie Hammond, another American, was also going well.

7:41:29 > 7:41:31And a good round became great

7:41:31 > 7:41:33with this second shot to the par five 17th.

7:41:35 > 7:41:37Nearly that rarest of all birds, an albatross,

7:41:37 > 7:41:41and there have only been two in Muirfield's Open history.

7:41:45 > 7:41:50Steve Pate continued to prove you don't need the greatest swing

7:41:50 > 7:41:54to score well and added a rather erratic 70 to his opening 64.

7:41:55 > 7:41:57And Gordon Brand Jr,

7:41:57 > 7:41:59still feeling very much at home with his birthplace

7:41:59 > 7:42:02just across the water, put together another round in the 60s

7:42:02 > 7:42:05to be nine under at halfway.

7:42:09 > 7:42:12But it wasn't making any impression on Faldo.

7:42:13 > 7:42:16By now, they all knew which John Cook this was

7:42:16 > 7:42:19and he too was to finish 9 under for 36 holes.

7:42:20 > 7:42:22But the day belonged to Faldo.

7:42:22 > 7:42:26I enjoyed today because every shot I was setting myself a target,

7:42:26 > 7:42:29what I was trying to do, how I wanted to hit the ball.

7:42:29 > 7:42:32And near as damn it, every hole, I did it.

7:42:32 > 7:42:34It didn't matter what club I had in my hand,

7:42:34 > 7:42:38I felt good with it, so it's a lovely feeling.

7:42:38 > 7:42:43I felt really so good inside and I felt, well, if you're feeling

7:42:43 > 7:42:47this good, let's just keep rolling on and see what happens.

7:42:47 > 7:42:50I've learnt that I've got to stop being hard on myself

7:42:50 > 7:42:53and accept you're going to hit some bad shots.

7:42:53 > 7:42:56I've learnt a good lesson.

7:42:56 > 7:42:59And it all added up to a 64 to go with his opening 66,

7:42:59 > 7:43:05a 36-hole record for the Championship and a lead of 3.

7:43:07 > 7:43:08So, the halfway stage

7:43:08 > 7:43:11and some big names are not going to be around for the weekend.

7:43:11 > 7:43:14Fred Couples has gone, so too Seve, Strange,

7:43:14 > 7:43:16Watson and Scotland's Colin Montgomerie.

7:43:16 > 7:43:19But perhaps the biggest name is that of Jack Nicklaus,

7:43:19 > 7:43:22here chatting with RNA captain Joe Carr.

7:43:22 > 7:43:25For the Mizes too, it's time to move on.

7:43:27 > 7:43:32- ..and the flight museum, that will take us to the A1?- Yes.

7:43:32 > 7:43:35- Are you driving?- Yes. I'll take it on the side.

7:43:40 > 7:43:45- The flight museum, and flight museum.- Flight museum.

7:43:45 > 7:43:48- Do you want a map?- Pardon me? - Do you want a map?

7:43:48 > 7:43:50I think we have a map.

7:43:52 > 7:43:53We had a map.

7:43:53 > 7:43:56I don't know what happened to it.

7:43:56 > 7:44:01Possibly part of the explanation for Nicklaus's untimely departure

7:44:01 > 7:44:02was the absence of his

7:44:02 > 7:44:05long-time caddie Jimmy Dickinson.

7:44:05 > 7:44:07But replacement Mike Wareham sensed

7:44:07 > 7:44:09a little rustiness in the great man's game.

7:44:09 > 7:44:12Jack was hitting OK, he just wasn't putting well.

7:44:12 > 7:44:17You know, I feel that he's not played enough competitive golf.

7:44:17 > 7:44:19That's all it amounts to.

7:44:19 > 7:44:22He's every caddy's ultimate, I guess.

7:44:22 > 7:44:25To me he's the greatest player who's ever held a golf club.

7:44:27 > 7:44:30Jimmy himself was unfortunately sidelined with a dodgy knee.

7:44:30 > 7:44:34I am 68 year old now, it's getting a bit...

7:44:34 > 7:44:36Specially the bags Jack brings over.

7:44:37 > 7:44:40Day three, and the members of the Honourable Company are looking

7:44:40 > 7:44:44for a decent breeze to sharpen up their pride and joy.

7:45:02 > 7:45:06But it's Nick Faldo they've all got to catch if they want to win this championship.

7:45:15 > 7:45:18APPLAUSE

7:45:23 > 7:45:26And, lastly, John Daly, still a pleasure to the crowd,

7:45:26 > 7:45:29but his round of 80, one of the worst for the day.

7:45:29 > 7:45:32A score that would surely only appear in Faldo's darkest nightmare

7:45:32 > 7:45:36when addressed in the elegant Greywalls Hotel.

7:45:36 > 7:45:39A bright and breezy morning greeted the early starters on day three.

7:45:39 > 7:45:43And a pair of Irishmen came across birds rather larger than

7:45:43 > 7:45:45these in the course of their rounds.

7:45:45 > 7:45:48This one was Ronan Rafferty here at the par four 8th.

7:45:55 > 7:45:57A brace of eagles for a Saturday morn.

7:45:59 > 7:46:03Ian Woosnam was having his own roller-coaster ride.

7:46:06 > 7:46:09A one-putt four saved par at the opening hole.

7:46:14 > 7:46:17A birdie at the second was followed by this great tee shot to the

7:46:17 > 7:46:18short fourth.

7:46:20 > 7:46:23And that was to take him to 200 for the day.

7:46:25 > 7:46:29But five shots were to go in three holes from the sixth.

7:46:29 > 7:46:33And only four birdies in the last ten holes kept his score respectable.

7:46:36 > 7:46:39Now see if you can see anything amiss here.

7:46:41 > 7:46:45INDISTINCT

7:46:46 > 7:46:49I looked down and it looked like it was on a different spot.

7:46:49 > 7:46:51I never saw the ball move. I was looking up at the green

7:46:51 > 7:46:54and I looked back down and it seemed to be in a different spot.

7:46:54 > 7:46:57One of the spectators said it did move.

7:46:58 > 7:47:01When I was looking up, when the ball actually moved,

7:47:01 > 7:47:02I know my club was off the ground.

7:47:04 > 7:47:07In what was otherwise a remarkably trouble-free

7:47:07 > 7:47:09championship for the rules committee,

7:47:09 > 7:47:12Pate's dilemma about whether his ball had moved at the fifth

7:47:12 > 7:47:15after he'd addressed it, was decided in his favour.

7:47:15 > 7:47:17But it was all part of a day that was anything

7:47:17 > 7:47:19but trouble free for Pate.

7:47:19 > 7:47:22He duly birdied this hole, one of four in a row from the third,

7:47:22 > 7:47:25but then dropped shots both seven and nine.

7:47:25 > 7:47:28Two more birdies came early coming home.

7:47:31 > 7:47:35One here at 11 and another at the 12th.

7:47:39 > 7:47:42But three more shots were to go in the last five holes.

7:47:42 > 7:47:45In the end, it all added up to a 69.

7:47:47 > 7:47:50It might have been 65, it could have been a 75.

7:47:50 > 7:47:53Seven birdies, five bogeys and just six pars.

7:47:53 > 7:47:56Not exactly a model of consistency.

7:47:59 > 7:48:02John Cook, playing in the last match with Faldo,

7:48:02 > 7:48:03this his third to the ninth.

7:48:03 > 7:48:05CHEERING

7:48:05 > 7:48:08A timely eagle indeed and an outward 9 of 35.

7:48:10 > 7:48:13Prior to that, he was beginning to lose touch.

7:48:13 > 7:48:17But playing with Faldo and all that home-grown support was never going to be a picnic.

7:48:21 > 7:48:24As for Faldo, the mixture was very much as before.

7:48:26 > 7:48:32Three steady pars, then this glorious tee shot to the fourth.

7:48:32 > 7:48:33APPLAUSE

7:48:44 > 7:48:47The first birdie of the day.

7:48:47 > 7:48:49APPLAUSE

7:48:49 > 7:48:52Olazabal at 17, just level for the day,

7:48:52 > 7:48:55after a somewhat scrappy outward nine.

7:49:00 > 7:49:01CHEERING

7:49:01 > 7:49:03What a moment to pick up two shots

7:49:03 > 7:49:06and certainly he seems a little more relaxed than for some time.

7:49:06 > 7:49:10Maybe the benefit of his three-week break just prior to the Championship.

7:49:17 > 7:49:21From the turn, Faldo came home steadily to finish in 69.

7:49:21 > 7:49:23His third sub-70 round of the Championship.

7:49:25 > 7:49:28Chip Beck along with Hale Irwin turned in a 67,

7:49:28 > 7:49:30the best round of the day.

7:49:33 > 7:49:36John Cook hung on for a very respectable round of 70 with

7:49:36 > 7:49:39par-saving putts like this.

7:49:40 > 7:49:44Rather grudging applause for what, after all, was quite a fine shot.

7:49:44 > 7:49:46SCATTERED APPLAUSE

7:49:50 > 7:49:52And Olazabal at the last.

7:49:57 > 7:49:59APPLAUSE

7:49:59 > 7:50:03A great shot to save his par and a round of 69.

7:50:05 > 7:50:07After all, in the absence of Seve,

7:50:07 > 7:50:09it's his job to keep the Spanish flag flying.

7:50:09 > 7:50:11And perhaps with his great hero

7:50:11 > 7:50:12no longer around,

7:50:12 > 7:50:13he could just be finding things

7:50:13 > 7:50:15a little less inhibiting this week.

7:50:24 > 7:50:27The old Claret Jug. What battles have been waged

7:50:27 > 7:50:29for its possession, down the years.

7:50:29 > 7:50:32The names, the dates, the venues bring back so many memories.

7:50:32 > 7:50:35Jacklin, there, at Lytham in 1969.

7:50:35 > 7:50:38And Trevino at Muirfield in 1972.

7:50:41 > 7:50:43Trevino chips it nonchalantly down there.

7:50:45 > 7:50:47Nobody believes their eyes,

7:50:47 > 7:50:50but confound it, that's the fourth time in this championship

7:50:50 > 7:50:53that Trevino chips it in from off the green.

7:50:53 > 7:50:55Really diabolical.

7:50:56 > 7:50:58And there it is. It's six for Jacklin

7:50:58 > 7:51:03and a moment that he will remember, and go over and over again

7:51:03 > 7:51:04all his life.

7:51:04 > 7:51:06Nearly on in two, down in six.

7:51:06 > 7:51:09Trevino off in four, down in five.

7:51:12 > 7:51:16And possibly the greatest contest of them all - Turnberry, in 1977.

7:51:24 > 7:51:25Has he got the right club?

7:51:25 > 7:51:28CHEERING

7:51:28 > 7:51:32Oh, has he got the right club?! My word, it is only 18-20 inches

7:51:32 > 7:51:33from the hole.

7:51:35 > 7:51:40What a tremendous battle this young man has had with Jack Nicklaus.

7:51:40 > 7:51:43Smashes it, with every sinew in his body.

7:51:43 > 7:51:46The crowd gallop across. Jack can't see where it's going to finish.

7:51:46 > 7:51:49It's going towards the front, right-hand corner of the green.

7:51:49 > 7:51:52and, in fact, it is on the putting surface.

7:51:52 > 7:51:56That, I think was one of the most powerful, animalistic golf shots

7:51:56 > 7:51:57I have ever seen.

7:51:58 > 7:52:00And the cream from recent years -

7:52:00 > 7:52:04Nick Price, unable to stem the Ballesteros tide of Lytham in 1988.

7:52:07 > 7:52:11Price first. He is -3 for today.

7:52:11 > 7:52:12Good going, indeed.

7:52:12 > 7:52:15And look, look, look at this!

7:52:16 > 7:52:17Well, what can you say?

7:52:17 > 7:52:21That is no more than two or three inches from the hole.

7:52:23 > 7:52:24Flipped up.

7:52:26 > 7:52:28He's got the pace.

7:52:28 > 7:52:30Oh, he has got the pace

7:52:30 > 7:52:31magnificently!

7:52:40 > 7:52:42Someone is going to have to do something similar,

7:52:42 > 7:52:45if they want to win today.

7:52:45 > 7:52:47But remember, when Seve's in contention,

7:52:47 > 7:52:49he is always in blue and white.

7:52:49 > 7:52:50And maybe it's no coincidence

7:52:50 > 7:52:54that Olazabal has chosen those colours for his final round.

7:52:54 > 7:52:58But seven shots back - it is asking a tremendous amount.

7:53:03 > 7:53:07CHURCH CONGREGATION SING

7:53:28 > 7:53:31Eleven o'clock at Gullane Parish Church.

7:53:31 > 7:53:33But where is everybody?

7:53:33 > 7:53:34For some reason, this morning,

7:53:34 > 7:53:38the Sunday service took place at 9.45. I wonder why(?)

7:53:38 > 7:53:41And certainly, the hymn numbers give no clue

7:53:41 > 7:53:43as to the likely winning score,

7:53:43 > 7:53:46particularly when you look at the best of the winning totals

7:53:46 > 7:53:49from Muirfield's illustrious past.

7:53:50 > 7:53:54For Daren Lee, the last two rounds are there to be enjoyed.

7:53:55 > 7:54:00The amateur medal is his, but mum and girlfriend Christine

7:54:00 > 7:54:02there to see him do it.

7:54:02 > 7:54:04Other ladies know what it is all about

7:54:04 > 7:54:06and savour the calm before the storm.

7:54:08 > 7:54:10For those of late, it is how to pass the hours

7:54:10 > 7:54:12before the starting gun goes off.

7:54:12 > 7:54:16For most, it is a question of just keeping on the move,

7:54:16 > 7:54:18to stop the system seizing up,

7:54:18 > 7:54:21and finding a rhythm to carry you through the day.

7:54:29 > 7:54:33For Faldo, though, it is just a case of finding some quiet corner

7:54:33 > 7:54:34of a foreign field.

7:54:34 > 7:54:38Two years ago, he also took a handsome lead into the final day.

7:54:38 > 7:54:41Maybe this time, he can become the first player to break 70

7:54:41 > 7:54:43in all four rounds of The Open.

7:54:43 > 7:54:46But now, it is time to get on with the job.

7:54:50 > 7:54:53- STARTER:- On the tee, Nick Faldo!

7:54:53 > 7:54:57- FALDO:- 'I want to make sure that I protect myself.

7:54:57 > 7:55:00'There may be somewhere where a decision's got to be made

7:55:00 > 7:55:02'or something and you may have to use your cushion.'

7:55:02 > 7:55:05- STARTER:- On the tee, Steve Pate!

7:55:05 > 7:55:06CHEERING AND APPLAUSE.

7:55:06 > 7:55:09- PATE:- 'He is not going to be easy to catch.

7:55:09 > 7:55:11'Obviously, if I was going to go and make a bet,

7:55:11 > 7:55:13'I think I would go bet on him right about now,

7:55:13 > 7:55:16'but it is certainly by no means out of the question

7:55:16 > 7:55:18'that he can be caught.'

7:55:24 > 7:55:26And a dropped shot at the opening hole

7:55:26 > 7:55:28was all the encouragement they needed.

7:55:28 > 7:55:31Olazabal was the first to strike.

7:55:33 > 7:55:35A birdie at the 2nd.

7:55:38 > 7:55:41In the first of several squalls to come through during the afternoon,

7:55:41 > 7:55:43John Cook gets his

7:55:43 > 7:55:46first blow in, with this putt for a birdie at the 3rd.

7:55:46 > 7:55:50CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

7:55:50 > 7:55:52And here, for another, at the 5th.

7:55:56 > 7:55:58This time, it's for an eagle.

7:55:58 > 7:56:01CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

7:56:03 > 7:56:07And so, that cushion that Faldo was talking about before the first tee,

7:56:07 > 7:56:09is down to a miserly one shot.

7:56:11 > 7:56:13Here's Pate, with his second to the 6th.

7:56:16 > 7:56:20Level for the day, he has only had one par in the first five holes.

7:56:23 > 7:56:25APPLAUSE

7:56:27 > 7:56:29Olazabal, his third to the 9th

7:56:29 > 7:56:33But at this point, he is one over for the day.

7:56:35 > 7:56:37A birdie here puts him out in 36.

7:56:37 > 7:56:38CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

7:56:38 > 7:56:43Back to the 6th. This is Pate, for his third birdie of the day.

7:56:43 > 7:56:46In she goes and that is -11, 2 behind Faldo.

7:56:50 > 7:56:53The short 7th and Faldo still seeking his first birdie of the day.

7:56:53 > 7:56:57Just one ahead of Cook and two in front of Pate.

7:56:57 > 7:57:01All thought of that final round lap of honour very much on hold.

7:57:05 > 7:57:07John Cook at the 9th.

7:57:07 > 7:57:10Two adrift of Faldo now, having dropped a shot at the 7th.

7:57:10 > 7:57:12But here, disaster strikes.

7:57:12 > 7:57:14He is out of bounds.

7:57:14 > 7:57:16Pate, at the 7th.

7:57:18 > 7:57:23Away into the bunker on the right and his topsy-turvy round continues.

7:57:23 > 7:57:27- The wind's strong out there.- Yeah, it's stronger than any other day.

7:57:35 > 7:57:38So, suddenly, the heat is off for Faldo.

7:57:38 > 7:57:41Both his closest rivals are in trouble, though, of course,

7:57:41 > 7:57:44he does not know what has happened to Cook at the 9th.

7:57:45 > 7:57:48This time, it's a three iron, back into the wind,

7:57:48 > 7:57:51at this 185-yard par three.

7:58:01 > 7:58:03And a marvellous shot, considering all the pressure

7:58:03 > 7:58:05of trying to win this championship from the front.

7:58:10 > 7:58:13John Cook, this his fourth shot to the 9th.

7:58:24 > 7:58:27Pate at the 7th and the rescue work continues.

7:58:30 > 7:58:31Two holes ahead,

7:58:31 > 7:58:34Cook was in the midst of its own personal crisis

7:58:34 > 7:58:37and his championship chances diminishing by the minute.

7:58:39 > 7:58:42Now Faldo, for a priceless two at the 7th.

7:58:45 > 7:58:48Well, they were all going in on the first two days,

7:58:48 > 7:58:50but now, it is all very hard graft.

7:58:53 > 7:58:55Cook's fifth to the 9th.

7:58:58 > 7:59:00And that one is not that much good, either.

7:59:08 > 7:59:10Pate escapes again. That is his

7:59:10 > 7:59:12fifth one putt in a row.

7:59:14 > 7:59:17Cook, to drop just one shot at the 9th.

7:59:36 > 7:59:39So nearly, but not quite and it all adds up to a seven.

7:59:39 > 7:59:42He is out in 37 and now 4 shots adrift of Faldo.

7:59:43 > 7:59:45Olazabal, his second to the 11th.

7:59:57 > 7:59:59He may still be six behind Faldo,

7:59:59 > 8:00:01but with the two Americans struggling,

8:00:01 > 8:00:05he could soon be challenging for second place.

8:00:06 > 8:00:07Nice weather, eh(?)

8:00:09 > 8:00:11John Cook, in trouble again, at the 10th.

8:00:11 > 8:00:15In the rough off the tee and still well short in two.

8:00:22 > 8:00:24Not bad, but he needs to hold that

8:00:24 > 8:00:27if he is not going to drop yet another shot.

8:00:27 > 8:00:30Olazabal, this for a three at the 11th, then.

8:00:34 > 8:00:38That is his second birdie in three holes and now he is after Faldo.

8:00:42 > 8:00:46Faldo's pitch to the 9th, but still with work to do,

8:00:46 > 8:00:49if he is going to find his first birdie of the day.

8:00:53 > 8:00:57Oh, good four for Cook, under the circumstances, at the 10th.

8:01:00 > 8:01:02Olazabal, second to the 12th.

8:01:02 > 8:01:03Into the breeze.

8:01:06 > 8:01:09Oh, what a fantastic shot. Surely another birdie coming up.

8:01:13 > 8:01:16Faldo, for a birdie, then, at the 9th.

8:01:19 > 8:01:22No, so just that dropped shot at the 1st,

8:01:22 > 8:01:24means it's 37 shots to the turn.

8:01:30 > 8:01:33But Pate has also been in trouble at the 9th.

8:01:41 > 8:01:44Yet another one putt green, but this time, for a six.

8:01:44 > 8:01:45Now, he is three shots adrift of Faldo.

8:01:51 > 8:01:54Took a long time, but Olazabal gets his three

8:01:54 > 8:01:58and now he's within four shots of Faldo, but Pate is in second place,
