0:00:02 > 0:00:04Tonight, the Moons were torn apart.

0:00:04 > 0:00:06- Please, Dad! - You're not my son anymore.

0:00:06 > 0:00:09As Eddie turns his back on his eldest son,

0:00:09 > 0:00:14we look back on the history of those Walford dads who failed as fathers.

0:00:14 > 0:00:19Before going behind the scenes to shine a light on the secrets of the new Moons.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29# Fly me to the moon... #

0:00:29 > 0:00:33The Queen Vic. Not long ago, the scene of a happy family reunion.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38- What a great day. I feel like a king.- To King Eddie!

0:00:40 > 0:00:45But tonight, we saw the dark side of the Moons, and a tragedy unfold.

0:00:46 > 0:00:51- On your knees!- It was an accident! - You're not my son anymore.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54Over the past few months, father and son have been at the centre

0:00:54 > 0:00:58of one of the most compelling storylines the Square has ever seen.

0:00:58 > 0:01:02The Moons joining the Square has been incredibly successful.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04It was brilliant.

0:01:04 > 0:01:09Betrayal, selfishness, greed, manipulation.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12Dun-dun-dun!

0:01:13 > 0:01:20This evening, the twisted tale of Eddie and Michael came to its dramatic conclusion.

0:01:20 > 0:01:21Please, Dad!

0:01:21 > 0:01:24You're not allowed to mess with Eddie Moon.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31Ever since Eddie's arrival in Walford,

0:01:31 > 0:01:34new Moons have been popping up all over the place.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37I think the Moons have been sent in to stir a few things up

0:01:37 > 0:01:38and to cause a bit of havoc.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41I know that the Moons are a bit complicated, it's taken me

0:01:41 > 0:01:44a long time to work out who is related to who. And how.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47Well, first there was Alfie, who is married to Kat,

0:01:47 > 0:01:50- then along came Alfie's cousin, Michael.- Alfie!

0:01:50 > 0:01:53Who is actually Tommy's dad, but let's not worry about that now.

0:01:53 > 0:01:59Eddie is Michael's dad, and he's also father to Craig and those two cheeky chappies, Anthony and Tyler.

0:01:59 > 0:02:00I think that covers it.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03The two new Moon boys had a very good start.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06There was a lot of nudity early on,

0:02:06 > 0:02:08which is always a plus as a female viewer, I think.

0:02:08 > 0:02:10All right, darlin'?

0:02:10 > 0:02:11What is it about them? Hmm.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14Maybe that they're all gorgeous?

0:02:16 > 0:02:20The Moons bring youth, good looks, humour.

0:02:20 > 0:02:21Aaargh!

0:02:21 > 0:02:23Energy, charm and sexiness as well.

0:02:23 > 0:02:28- What are you doing? - I'm helping you out! Being that hot must be illegal.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31I think people do enjoy the cheekiness,

0:02:31 > 0:02:34and the banter that's in the family.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37- Oi, Kat.- You ain't bad for an old bird, either.- Thanks.

0:02:37 > 0:02:45But when it comes to charming the residents of Walford, I think we all know who's the daddy.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48# Daddy, daddy cool. #

0:02:48 > 0:02:52He's a charmer, isn't he? And he's just got that, I don't know,

0:02:52 > 0:03:01that kind of thing where every woman that looks at him either is intrigued by him or wants a bit of him.

0:03:01 > 0:03:02Oh, I say!

0:03:02 > 0:03:06There was obviously only ever one man for the role, but I had a few things on.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09So producers went for BAFTA nominee David Essex instead.

0:03:09 > 0:03:13It was brilliant working with David. He's a legend.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17I was there on David Essex's intro,

0:03:17 > 0:03:19and he was very cool.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21Very cool, very suave.

0:03:21 > 0:03:25- Am I going the right way for Albert Square? - That way, you can't miss it.

0:03:25 > 0:03:30David in real life and Eddie on screen bring that courtesy,

0:03:30 > 0:03:34that old fashioned East End courtesy that I think we haven't seen in a while.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36Thanks for that, I appreciate it.

0:03:36 > 0:03:40My mum, who really told me how big David Essex was.

0:03:40 > 0:03:44I always knew the name, obviously, but he was a bit before my time.

0:03:48 > 0:03:50Yup. When Eddie Moon was just a twinkle in a writer's eye,

0:03:50 > 0:03:54David Essex was busy being a '70s heart throb.

0:03:56 > 0:04:00He was huge, he was a big rock and pop star back in the day.

0:04:00 > 0:04:04- Bigger than Duran Duran, love! - He definitely has it.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07If you look at him on Top of the Pops back in 1975,

0:04:07 > 0:04:10or whenever it was, he's got something about him.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13No wonder the girls where throwing their knickers at him back then,

0:04:13 > 0:04:15and I think probably today.

0:04:16 > 0:04:21There is a certain breed of woman who are even yet throwing their metaphorical knickers

0:04:21 > 0:04:22at the television screen!

0:04:22 > 0:04:25All the ladies were swooning, definitely.

0:04:25 > 0:04:29Linda Cox was all, "Hello! Hello! Lovely to meet you! Aah!

0:04:29 > 0:04:31"Oh, my God! David Essex! Aah!"

0:04:31 > 0:04:37Only he could be that role. It's a man who has to come into the Square,

0:04:37 > 0:04:44instantly seducing everyone, even Carol Jackson's snogging him after about five minutes!

0:04:44 > 0:04:46- A little TLC. - I could do with a little touch up.

0:04:46 > 0:04:50Uh, sorry, I mean, um, TLC!

0:04:50 > 0:04:53It's got to be someone like David Essex.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55Eddie appeals to everyone, he's very charming

0:04:55 > 0:05:01and the women like him, the men like him, so he fits in very well.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04Although there is at least one person who would have

0:05:04 > 0:05:06preferred it if Eddie Moon had never come to Walford at all.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09Michael Moon hates Eddie.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11If he was dying on the street I wouldn't gob on him.

0:05:11 > 0:05:16Michael and Eddie's history is long and complicated and dates back

0:05:16 > 0:05:19to an event 33 years ago, where Michael's mother

0:05:19 > 0:05:22killed herself, and he walked in to find her body.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25Michael has always blamed Eddie for this.

0:05:25 > 0:05:30He thinks that his father killed his mother, he is responsible for wrecking his mother's life,

0:05:30 > 0:05:32for wrecking his own life, and he wants revenge.

0:05:32 > 0:05:37He wants to destroy everything that his father ever had.

0:05:37 > 0:05:42- She knew you cheated on her, Dad, you cheated on her and it broke her heart.- No.- Yes, it did.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44It broke her heart and it killed her, Dad, it killed her!

0:05:44 > 0:05:47Michael is a survivor of suicide.

0:05:47 > 0:05:52It does leave a very long lasting scar in his psyche, and the

0:05:52 > 0:05:57temptation to look for somebody to blame is almost overwhelming.

0:05:57 > 0:06:05Michael, in a few words. Damaged, complicated, lonely, lost.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08Bloody good looking, though!

0:06:08 > 0:06:12Well, he's just like his father in that department. But it's a lot more than good looks

0:06:12 > 0:06:14that Eddie and Michael share.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18We were keen to make clear that Eddie has a very shady past.

0:06:18 > 0:06:22This is a man who, 30-odd years ago, was a bit of a hell raiser.

0:06:22 > 0:06:23Bit of a womaniser.

0:06:23 > 0:06:27If the story about Eddie and his son is compelling,

0:06:27 > 0:06:31it's because it makes real a lot of the feelings that

0:06:31 > 0:06:35simmer between fathers and sons.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39In what we refer to as real life.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42You see me on my knees and you go for the throat.

0:06:44 > 0:06:50- What kind of monster does that make you?- I didn't make me, Dad.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53You made me.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56While Eddie may have made some monumental mistakes,

0:06:56 > 0:07:00when it comes to faulty fatherhood, he's not the first and he certainly wont be the last.

0:07:01 > 0:07:06Relationships between fathers and kids, they're just really messed up in Albert Square.

0:07:06 > 0:07:10The dads of Albert Square go wrong, usually when it comes to money or women.

0:07:10 > 0:07:13Tradition in EastEnders, as a father, to get it as wrong as possible.

0:07:13 > 0:07:16But there must be some decent dads on the Square?

0:07:16 > 0:07:21- Umm...- Umm...- Umm...

0:07:21 > 0:07:24- Umm...- Umm...

0:07:24 > 0:07:30It's hard to say, because I don't know any great examples of dads,

0:07:30 > 0:07:31really, in Albert Square.

0:07:31 > 0:07:35There isn't a dad in Albert Square who hasn't committed some

0:07:35 > 0:07:37deadly sin at some point.

0:07:37 > 0:07:39Yes, those deadly sins can be a problem.

0:07:39 > 0:07:44But when it comes to fatherhood, it's the Dad-ly Sins that cause the real trouble!

0:07:44 > 0:07:47- The Seven Dad-ly Sins.- Exactly.

0:07:47 > 0:07:51- From Max Branning's liaison with his daughter-in-law...- You're my son's girlfriend.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54To Phil Mitchell's wrathful rages, almost all the dads

0:07:54 > 0:07:58on Albert Square have been guilty of some fatherly felony, even Eddie Moon.

0:08:00 > 0:08:02So, to our first Dad-ly Sin, envy.

0:08:02 > 0:08:05And one man stands out above the rest.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07I think of all the dads in EastEnders, I think

0:08:07 > 0:08:11top of the tree, really, has got to be Den Watts.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14From what I remember from all those years ago,

0:08:14 > 0:08:19Den was an adulterer, I think he was a little bit of a gangster,

0:08:19 > 0:08:22and I think he was an all-round butt-head!

0:08:24 > 0:08:30He was also one of the founding fathers of Walford, and devoted father to daughter, Sharon.

0:08:30 > 0:08:34I don't think he was "dirty" Den. When it came to his daughter, nobody was ever good enough for her

0:08:34 > 0:08:38and her bubble perms and her splendid pullovers(!)

0:08:41 > 0:08:46But yeah, he doted on her. She was his blue-eyed little princess.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49Despite her terrible taste in jumpers, Den adored Sharon,

0:08:49 > 0:08:51and the feeling was mutual.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54Sharon absolutely loved him to bits.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57He was the epitome of swashbuckling glamour.

0:08:57 > 0:09:00And what kid wouldn't want a dad who seemed as glamorous and powerful

0:09:00 > 0:09:01and king of the square?

0:09:01 > 0:09:02Which is what he was.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04What's bothering my princess, eh?

0:09:04 > 0:09:07I loved the way Den used to call Sharon "princess".

0:09:07 > 0:09:09"'Allo, Princess."

0:09:09 > 0:09:12Den's weakness was Sharon, which made him a much more interesting character.

0:09:12 > 0:09:17It was such a weak spot for him, that he would do anything for her.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21I think everybody has a love of their life.

0:09:21 > 0:09:25It's generally just one, kind of like your soul mate.

0:09:25 > 0:09:27If you're really lucky, that will be your wife.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30And I think with Den, that wasn't the case.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32The love of his life, his soul mate, was Sharon.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35And that's what made that relationship fascinating.

0:09:35 > 0:09:39Boyfriends came and went, but no-one ever posed a threat to Den's

0:09:39 > 0:09:42position as the number one man in Sharon's life.

0:09:42 > 0:09:44Until one day...

0:09:44 > 0:09:46When little Den turned up, "Fit Den",

0:09:46 > 0:09:52as we liked to call him, I guess Big Den's parenting took a new twist.

0:09:52 > 0:09:56Because when Sharon got it on with Den's long lost son,

0:09:56 > 0:09:58Daddy Watts was not a happy bunny.

0:09:58 > 0:10:01You might just have met your match there.

0:10:01 > 0:10:05Sharon got to see the possessive side of him,

0:10:05 > 0:10:08the manipulative side of him, and the very, very jealous side of him.

0:10:08 > 0:10:13I'm not talking to you in that state. Look at you. Standing there like some slut.

0:10:13 > 0:10:15Don't you dare call me that, I am not a slut!

0:10:15 > 0:10:18When Sharon was obsessed with Dennis,

0:10:18 > 0:10:23that, Den... This is the woman he loved. Den loved Sharon.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26You just had this feeling that he thought

0:10:26 > 0:10:31he was the only person good enough for her, but she was his daughter. It was a weird relationship.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34He just didn't want anybody to have anything to do with Sharon

0:10:34 > 0:10:35other than himself.

0:10:35 > 0:10:40- But there was no pulling the wool over Fit Den's pretty eyes. - You're jealous!

0:10:40 > 0:10:42- What?- You're jealous!

0:10:42 > 0:10:45Perhaps it was envy.

0:10:45 > 0:10:47Dennis was a younger version of him.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50He could see that this man was taking his precious daughter away from him.

0:10:50 > 0:10:52He knew that if she went off with Dennis,

0:10:52 > 0:10:54she wouldn't love him as much

0:10:54 > 0:10:56Den wanted Sharon all to himself,

0:10:56 > 0:10:59and he'd stop at nothing to get his way.

0:10:59 > 0:11:05He was so utterly ruthless in the way he split the two of them up.

0:11:05 > 0:11:08Sleeping with Zoe, getting her to lie that she was pregnant.

0:11:08 > 0:11:10You either lie to him or you lose him, for good!

0:11:10 > 0:11:14Driving his daughter away from the only love of her life.

0:11:14 > 0:11:18I mean, it was ruthless stuff, he was determined to split them up.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21And he did. Still, it wasn't long before Den's princess discovered

0:11:21 > 0:11:24the truth about her delightful dad.

0:11:24 > 0:11:26Secrets never stay secret in Albert Square,

0:11:26 > 0:11:29so of course the truth is found out.

0:11:29 > 0:11:33And there was this scene where Sharon comes back to the Square,

0:11:33 > 0:11:37and it's been engineered that she would just overhear, just as

0:11:37 > 0:11:40her father is confessing everything he's done to ruin her life.

0:11:40 > 0:11:45Go on, Zoe, go and tell your family the reason that Dennis left you is because he caught you in bed with me.

0:11:45 > 0:11:49Tell them I'm the father of your baby. Let them broadcast it to the world!

0:11:49 > 0:11:53There's not one single person around here who I give a toss about.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00Princess...

0:12:00 > 0:12:04It's only when she finds out exactly all the terrible things that

0:12:04 > 0:12:07he's done that she just can't stomach it anymore.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10You lost me my darling.

0:12:10 > 0:12:15- The person who made me happier than I'd ever been.- But that's me! - No, it ain't.

0:12:15 > 0:12:19And this time, she just says no, I don't have a father anymore, and goes...

0:12:19 > 0:12:22My dad died a long time ago.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25I buried him. And my mum's buried next to him.

0:12:25 > 0:12:30I don't know who you are, but you ain't my dad. I'm an orphan.

0:12:32 > 0:12:37Most things, Den can cope with. He moves on as a bit of a hustler.

0:12:39 > 0:12:44But to be rejected by Sharon actually really cuts him to the core.

0:12:49 > 0:12:52Den had lost the only thing he ever loved.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55And just weeks ago, Michael was planning a similar

0:12:55 > 0:12:59fate for Eddie, as he put Tyler in the ring on fight night.

0:13:01 > 0:13:05- He's looking sharp! Right?- Yeah.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08When Michael starts taking an interest in Tyler with the boxing,

0:13:08 > 0:13:11that's the first time Tyler really feels like that's his brother.

0:13:11 > 0:13:15- All right, champ?- Feeling good. - All right, yeah.

0:13:15 > 0:13:18It's the first time that Michael has ever bonded with Tyler

0:13:18 > 0:13:20and taken an interest in him.

0:13:20 > 0:13:22I think Tyler is secretly chuffed about that.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24You're going to put this family on the map.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26You know how to grab a chance and make the most of it.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29- You set it up for me, bruv.- That's what big brothers are for, yeah.

0:13:31 > 0:13:33Little does he know, he's going to try and kill him!

0:13:33 > 0:13:42Michael has basically put Tyler in a boxing ring in an unlicensed

0:13:42 > 0:13:43fight with a psychopath.

0:13:44 > 0:13:48In Michael's eyes, he wants me to die. Just to hurt Eddie.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55- That's my boy!- You can't go in there!- My boy!

0:13:56 > 0:14:01So in Michael's twisted, warped mind,

0:14:01 > 0:14:05on the anniversary of his mother's death, he chooses to mark it with a

0:14:05 > 0:14:11boxing match which could potentially not only financially ruin people, it could Anthony's money away.

0:14:11 > 0:14:13All the money, I bet it!

0:14:13 > 0:14:16Gambling could shame Eddie. It could also kill Tyler!

0:14:18 > 0:14:24It seems to be a rather harsh reaction to that he was jealous of Tyler's with Eddie.

0:14:24 > 0:14:26Get him out of there! Stop the fight!

0:14:28 > 0:14:31'I don't think it's any accident that Michael's revenge'

0:14:31 > 0:14:35also involves the possible death -

0:14:35 > 0:14:39certainly huge injuries and pain -

0:14:39 > 0:14:41to one of his brothers.

0:14:43 > 0:14:45'All of these things he's done'

0:14:45 > 0:14:47because he's seeking revenge.

0:14:49 > 0:14:52While Michael was concentrating on revenge,

0:14:52 > 0:14:57the two new mini-Moons were concentrating on their biggest scene so far.

0:14:57 > 0:14:59The set they've got here is tremendous -

0:14:59 > 0:15:02it's like being on a set for a film.

0:15:03 > 0:15:11There was a great buzz around the set, and Clive Arnold who directed it captured everything.

0:15:11 > 0:15:13He's fantastic, he brought the best out of us.

0:15:15 > 0:15:19Everyone had their own sort of little things - Michael was there conjuring up his plan,

0:15:19 > 0:15:24Eddie was there making sure he was all right, Vanessa on his shoulder, Carol comes in and sees that,

0:15:24 > 0:15:25you've got Whitney there

0:15:25 > 0:15:28who doesn't know if she's falling for Tyler yet...

0:15:28 > 0:15:32So there's loads - so much going on, and so much to capture.

0:15:32 > 0:15:36As the tension builds outside the ring, INSIDE it was all kicking off.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39Well - punching off!

0:15:39 > 0:15:41It was quite exhausting, cos we was filming

0:15:41 > 0:15:43from 8:00 in the morning till 6:00 at night.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46- Let's go one more time. > - Just do one there first?

0:15:46 > 0:15:49We was repeating the routine over and over again.

0:15:49 > 0:15:54Tony did tremendously, to do a few takes with that fight.

0:15:57 > 0:16:03But it was really fulfilling, it was really good to do, and I really enjoyed it.

0:16:03 > 0:16:07As Tony Discipline ended the day on a high...

0:16:10 > 0:16:12..Tyler ended up in intensive care!

0:16:12 > 0:16:14TYLER!

0:16:15 > 0:16:19I don't think it was ever about Tyler. I don't think he particularly likes Tyler,

0:16:19 > 0:16:23but it's all about hurting Eddie. That's what it all boils down to in the end.

0:16:23 > 0:16:29Well, Michael certainly succeeded there - but the evening's events took an unexpected turn,

0:16:29 > 0:16:33as father and son finally began to reconcile their differences.

0:16:34 > 0:16:39But reconciliation takes effort - and that's not something our next dad is very familiar with.

0:16:39 > 0:16:43- DOORBELL Who's that?- I don't know yet! - Well, tell 'em we already gave.

0:16:43 > 0:16:45Keith Miller... No, he's rubbish, isn't he?

0:16:45 > 0:16:50- Think you better come to the door. - No, the door better come to ME.

0:16:54 > 0:16:57The first person that comes to mind for sloth and laziness

0:16:57 > 0:16:59would definitely be Keith Miller.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02I don't think that I remember seeing him out of his armchair.

0:17:02 > 0:17:06'He represented the no-hoper.'

0:17:06 > 0:17:09Someone going nowhere, didn't care where they were going,

0:17:09 > 0:17:11living off the state...

0:17:11 > 0:17:14Did nothing, believed in nothing...and achieved nothing.

0:17:14 > 0:17:17Exactly! My point, well made!

0:17:17 > 0:17:21Capitalism is a corrupt institution based on survival of the fittest.

0:17:21 > 0:17:23And the grindin' down of the little man!

0:17:23 > 0:17:25Talk...English, man!

0:17:25 > 0:17:29You can't judge a man by what he does or how much he earns, it's immoral!

0:17:29 > 0:17:31It's WHO we are that's more important.

0:17:31 > 0:17:35Yeah. And you are an idle, lazy, scrounging old arse!

0:17:39 > 0:17:44There was only one thing he loved more than his family, which was that armchair.

0:17:44 > 0:17:48And his remote control - those are his prize possessions.

0:17:48 > 0:17:52# We're busy doin' nothin', workin' the whole day through

0:17:52 > 0:17:56# Trying to find lots of things not to do... #

0:17:56 > 0:17:59Always on that settee, he was. Watching a documentary.

0:17:59 > 0:18:02Never did a day's work in his life.

0:18:02 > 0:18:04Go and get us a drink, sweetheart.

0:18:04 > 0:18:05Nice cup of tea, eh?

0:18:06 > 0:18:09That's it, Keith - wouldn't want to strain yourself.

0:18:09 > 0:18:14No, that's not being a good dad, it's just rubbish.

0:18:14 > 0:18:16He's rubbish - he's a rubbish dad.

0:18:19 > 0:18:22I think he loved the kids...

0:18:22 > 0:18:25just couldn't be bothered getting off the sofa to tell them!

0:18:25 > 0:18:28If anyone's asking, mine's a pint an' all.

0:18:28 > 0:18:32'I love the character, don't get me wrong. But no, rubbish dad.'

0:18:32 > 0:18:35Sits in an armchair for three years... Watching quizzes.

0:18:35 > 0:18:37That's no way to behave, is it?

0:18:37 > 0:18:40Keith's slothfulness knew no bounds. He couldn't even be bothered

0:18:40 > 0:18:44to keep an eye out for the crazed doctor stalking his stepdaughter.

0:18:44 > 0:18:46I just thought you might want to help!

0:18:46 > 0:18:51Course I want to help! I can keep an eye on the Square from here. Rally the troops, spread the word.

0:18:51 > 0:18:52What?

0:18:52 > 0:18:56Not surprisingly, Keith's lookout wasn't very successful -

0:18:56 > 0:18:59and the doolally doctor managed to set the Millers alight!

0:18:59 > 0:19:01Help us! Do something!

0:19:01 > 0:19:06- Leave it to the experts...- No, you stay put - it's what you always do.

0:19:06 > 0:19:07He redeemed himself at the end, Keith.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10He finally got out of his chair.

0:19:10 > 0:19:14In Dawn's darkest hour, Keith went from zero...to hero.

0:19:14 > 0:19:16Dad?

0:19:16 > 0:19:17DAD...!

0:19:20 > 0:19:23Finally doing something worthy of the title "father",

0:19:23 > 0:19:27Keith Miller moved at least 15 feet to save Dawn from impending doom.

0:19:28 > 0:19:30Help me, please. I don't think she's breathing!

0:19:33 > 0:19:37To be honest, Keith NEEDED to be a hero, because he'd been so useless.

0:19:37 > 0:19:41I suppose it's something to have saved Kara for Strictly Come Dancing,

0:19:41 > 0:19:43that's some kind of achievement.

0:19:43 > 0:19:46Yeah. Yeah, it was.

0:19:46 > 0:19:48But no marks for achievement for our next father -

0:19:48 > 0:19:54who committed HIS dad-liest sin back in 2006.

0:19:54 > 0:19:57In a storyline that shocked the nation, Max let lust take over,

0:19:57 > 0:20:01before getting his leg over with the love of his son's life.

0:20:01 > 0:20:03Max Branning, king sleazeball -

0:20:03 > 0:20:05get your hands

0:20:05 > 0:20:08off of your daughter-in-law, you pervert.

0:20:08 > 0:20:10I think he's just a bit of a horny devil, really.

0:20:10 > 0:20:12I think Max Branning, definitely, for lust.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15You're my son's girlfriend...

0:20:15 > 0:20:18Yes. She is! Bradley's girlfriend.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21Lovable, loyal, dependable Bradley.

0:20:21 > 0:20:24Surely this makes Max one of the dirtiest dads on the Square?

0:20:24 > 0:20:28Well, I think - this might be controversial -

0:20:28 > 0:20:30I think Max is a great dad.

0:20:30 > 0:20:34Yeah - er...no, you've lost me there.

0:20:34 > 0:20:36There's no way we'd want to watch Max for ever

0:20:36 > 0:20:38if he didn't have redeeming qualities.

0:20:38 > 0:20:41You know? He's a really well-rounded character.

0:20:41 > 0:20:45He isn't just a terrible father by sleeping with everything that moves.

0:20:47 > 0:20:50He loves bringing home the money, bringing home the bread...

0:20:50 > 0:20:55and making sure everyone's safe - and he's cuddly with his girls and he's there for Oscar...

0:20:55 > 0:20:58He loves being a dad, and he's good at being a dad

0:20:58 > 0:21:01in all the very fundamental ways!

0:21:01 > 0:21:04And then he goes and does something monumentally stupid.

0:21:04 > 0:21:06Ahem - no offence, Stacey.

0:21:06 > 0:21:08Max was completely responsible

0:21:08 > 0:21:11for the whole Bradley/Stacey

0:21:11 > 0:21:14epic years of guilt and misery.

0:21:16 > 0:21:20You do think, "How could you? This is your own son's partner here."

0:21:20 > 0:21:23- Sorry... - And he just couldn't resist it.

0:21:23 > 0:21:27- Me and Bradley were fine until you came along.- I've done nothing but be nice to the boy.

0:21:27 > 0:21:30- Making him see what a worthless little tart I am?- That ain't true.

0:21:30 > 0:21:32- I've encouraged him, yeah... - To look elsewhere.

0:21:32 > 0:21:33'Poor little Bradley.'

0:21:33 > 0:21:37'It obviously does make Max the worst dad ever, doesn't it?'

0:21:37 > 0:21:42God, am I turning into Tanya? I feel like I'm forgiving him everything. It's unforgivable.

0:21:42 > 0:21:46What kind of man moves in on his son's girlfriend, anyway?

0:21:46 > 0:21:52Max, as a character, is very driven. If he wants something, he gets it.

0:21:53 > 0:21:56And it was there from the very first moment -

0:21:56 > 0:21:58Stacey was on her way home from a night out,

0:21:58 > 0:22:00and she was barefoot, going across the Square,

0:22:00 > 0:22:03and Max just caught her eye and said something cheeky to her.

0:22:03 > 0:22:05I like your shoes.

0:22:05 > 0:22:10And I remember going, "Ooh, hello... What's going to happen here?"

0:22:10 > 0:22:12You're lovely. D'you like me an' all?

0:22:12 > 0:22:15- Bald, middle-aged... My perfect man. - Yeah.

0:22:15 > 0:22:18He just can't help himself.

0:22:18 > 0:22:22You're like a dog caught with a scent, and you just can't let go.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27There is a big hole - and it looks too good to avoid.

0:22:27 > 0:22:30Just have to walk straight into that trap.

0:22:31 > 0:22:33'He just can't resist it -'

0:22:33 > 0:22:37if there's a pretty woman in front of him, he just can't say no.

0:22:38 > 0:22:40He's a dog!

0:22:40 > 0:22:43Our families are sitting round the Vic. Your mum...

0:22:43 > 0:22:45Your wife.

0:22:45 > 0:22:49I don't know if his first instinct is to put himself before his children...

0:22:49 > 0:22:53but I think he accidentally does.

0:22:53 > 0:22:55I'm Bradley's dad. I'm married. I'm twice your age.

0:22:55 > 0:22:57I find that appealing.

0:22:57 > 0:22:58Oh, it was awful.

0:23:02 > 0:23:06And things were about to get a whole lot worse, as nearly 14 million viewers tuned in to watch

0:23:06 > 0:23:08when Max's dad-ly sin was revealed.

0:23:09 > 0:23:12The whole family was sitting there for Christmas,

0:23:12 > 0:23:14to watch the Queen's speech.

0:23:17 > 0:23:19And instead we got a video of Max and Stacey.

0:23:21 > 0:23:24MUSIC: "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year"

0:23:30 > 0:23:35Even on her wedding day! She's standing in the wedding dress, she's about to marry his son.

0:23:35 > 0:23:38He can't resist it - in there trying to get another snog!

0:23:38 > 0:23:39He's dirty.

0:23:39 > 0:23:43Max was indeed dirty. And Bradley - ooh! He was angry.

0:23:45 > 0:23:48Poor old Bradley... I just cannot imagine.

0:23:48 > 0:23:51Cos he thought his world was rosy, that the whole future is bright -

0:23:51 > 0:23:55and he's sitting there, with a stupid paper hat on,

0:23:55 > 0:23:58watching his dad - eurgh! - snog his wife.

0:23:58 > 0:24:00It's a joke.

0:24:02 > 0:24:05How can you behave in that way and betray your own flesh and blood?

0:24:05 > 0:24:07Just tell her, Stace, just tell her!

0:24:07 > 0:24:09Tell 'em, all right, it's a joke.

0:24:14 > 0:24:16(I'm sorry.)

0:24:18 > 0:24:23Max didn't have long to deal with it before Bradley threw him into the Christmas tree, as I recall.

0:24:23 > 0:24:26I'll kill you... I'll kill you, Dad!

0:24:26 > 0:24:28Come back... Stay back! Come on!

0:24:31 > 0:24:33- Just leave it... - Get your hands off me!

0:24:33 > 0:24:35What was he thinking? Yes, he is a bad father.

0:24:36 > 0:24:41'Would anybody WANT to be Max? I certainly wouldn't to be Max.'

0:24:41 > 0:24:44To live with that cluster of lies... It's not a life to be envied.

0:24:44 > 0:24:47It's true. Lust can only ever lead to no good.

0:24:47 > 0:24:49But it's something the dads of Albert Square

0:24:49 > 0:24:51just can't seem to avoid!

0:24:51 > 0:24:53Even Eddie fell foul of THIS dad-ly sin.

0:24:53 > 0:24:58But that's exactly what Michael was hoping for when he employed the services of Vanessa.

0:24:58 > 0:25:01Michael, in order to hurt his father,

0:25:01 > 0:25:06has paid Vanessa to split Carol and Eddie up -

0:25:06 > 0:25:09and then for me to break his heart as well.

0:25:09 > 0:25:13Knowing full well that very few fathers can resist the lure of lust,

0:25:13 > 0:25:17Michael used it as part of his plan to destroy his dad.

0:25:19 > 0:25:20Break his heart.

0:25:22 > 0:25:25It's there, for the taking.

0:25:26 > 0:25:28Break it.

0:25:28 > 0:25:29And I'll see you right.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35Michael is very manipulative. And he's very clever.

0:25:35 > 0:25:38I'm offering you security.

0:25:38 > 0:25:40You move in on my dad...

0:25:40 > 0:25:42you get money...

0:25:42 > 0:25:44you get a place to stay...

0:25:44 > 0:25:47and as a nice little bit of icing on your cake,

0:25:47 > 0:25:51you get to turf Carol Jackson out on her ear. Huh?

0:25:51 > 0:25:54The corrupt and devious character Michael is...

0:25:54 > 0:25:59'Picks on the people that are the weakest, and then at that point she was the weakest.'

0:25:59 > 0:26:04Vanessa may have been weak - but she was also hot. Surely no man could resist?

0:26:04 > 0:26:05Hello, boys...

0:26:05 > 0:26:10Every dad in Albert Square has at some point committed the sin of lust.

0:26:10 > 0:26:12Even Eddie Moon. I mean, he should have stuck with Carol,

0:26:12 > 0:26:16nice, cuddly, lovely Eddie Moon, he couldn't resist the lady in white.

0:26:16 > 0:26:20Vanessa - one flick of those shoulder pads, and he was in there,

0:26:20 > 0:26:22and that was his downfall.

0:26:22 > 0:26:25It wasn't long before Vanessa snared her man,

0:26:25 > 0:26:28and it looked like Michael's lust-led plan had worked.

0:26:28 > 0:26:31Possibly there's some old man's vanity in that as well,

0:26:31 > 0:26:34that this younger, attractive woman would still be interested in him.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36'So he does fall for that.'

0:26:37 > 0:26:43The main thing Michael wants is for Vanessa to go, and take Eddie with her. That's his main game.

0:26:43 > 0:26:48But over the relationship that they establish, she actually falls for him.

0:26:48 > 0:26:49You've been really good to me.

0:26:49 > 0:26:53Vanessa's feelings for Eddie start to grow

0:26:53 > 0:27:00just after she's had to start trying to kind of...woo him.

0:27:00 > 0:27:04'He's such a nice guy, and it's so easy'

0:27:04 > 0:27:06for her to fall for him.

0:27:06 > 0:27:09But when Craig smelled a rat, the plot began to unravel

0:27:09 > 0:27:11and Vanessa was forced to reveal everything.

0:27:15 > 0:27:20'We shot the scene where Vanessa has to tell Eddie'

0:27:20 > 0:27:23that his son hates him so much

0:27:23 > 0:27:25that he's paid me to split him up with Carol,

0:27:25 > 0:27:26and to break his heart...

0:27:26 > 0:27:31Thank you, we are recording... Shot one, take two - and action.

0:27:31 > 0:27:33I want the truth. And I want it right now.

0:27:33 > 0:27:37Leave anything out, and I find out later, we're over.

0:27:37 > 0:27:41Tell me now - and we've got a chance.

0:27:41 > 0:27:44Having to tell somebody that sort of stuff

0:27:44 > 0:27:45'in order to save your own skin -'

0:27:45 > 0:27:49horrible to have to say that to, you know, to poor Eddie.

0:27:49 > 0:27:52Michael...he hates you so much,

0:27:52 > 0:27:56that he paid me, to split up you and Carol and to...break your heart.

0:27:56 > 0:27:57'Vanessa knew that'

0:27:57 > 0:28:01unless she gave all this information she was absolutely out on her ear,

0:28:01 > 0:28:03and there was a possibility that if she

0:28:03 > 0:28:06'explained to him, maybe, you know,

0:28:06 > 0:28:08'she could rectify the relationship,

0:28:08 > 0:28:10'and he would understand and he would forgive her.'

0:28:10 > 0:28:14Think what you will of me. But you've got to know what he's like.

0:28:14 > 0:28:16He planned it all.

0:28:18 > 0:28:21Vanessa knew that Eddie would be absolutely devastated by that news.

0:28:21 > 0:28:26Especially as the relationship has been developing between Michael and Eddie

0:28:26 > 0:28:30and everything's all happy families, and suddenly it's all...

0:28:30 > 0:28:32it's all gone again.

0:28:32 > 0:28:36No-one in their right mind could argue with Eddie's reaction to Michael's betrayal.

0:28:36 > 0:28:40Yet there's one dad on the Square that consistently divides opinion.

0:28:40 > 0:28:42Ian... I love a bit of Ian.

0:28:42 > 0:28:45Ian Beale's quite a good dad, really.

0:28:45 > 0:28:47I think he's done a pretty good job of screwing up his kids.

0:28:47 > 0:28:49Ian Beale for Dad of the Year...

0:28:49 > 0:28:51I'm not sure!

0:28:51 > 0:28:53I don't think he's a BAD dad...

0:28:53 > 0:28:54His children don't think he's a good dad.

0:28:54 > 0:28:57The best dad...is Ian.

0:28:57 > 0:28:59He's a tremendous dad, isn't he?

0:28:59 > 0:29:00- Thanks.- Not!

0:29:00 > 0:29:02No matter what you think of Ian Beale,

0:29:02 > 0:29:05there's no getting away from the fact

0:29:05 > 0:29:09that when it comes to our next "dad-ly" sin, he's a serial offender.

0:29:09 > 0:29:14The obvious sin for Ian is greed because he always seems to want more.

0:29:17 > 0:29:21I think Ian Beale is one of those dads that means well

0:29:21 > 0:29:26but never gets it right, has no sense of authority with his children

0:29:26 > 0:29:28but because Ian is Ian, he's driven by...

0:29:30 > 0:29:32..greed and money.

0:29:34 > 0:29:36That's what I like about you, Ian,

0:29:36 > 0:29:40in fact it's the only thing I like about you, you're ruled by money.

0:29:40 > 0:29:43Ian is a product of Thatcher's England

0:29:43 > 0:29:47and greed does run kind of central to that character.

0:29:47 > 0:29:49# Money, Money, Money... #

0:29:49 > 0:29:51Mum, lend us a couple of quid.

0:29:51 > 0:29:55His main focus, the driving force behind Ian Beale is status.

0:29:55 > 0:29:59Mum, if I didn't have this house, the business, the money,

0:29:59 > 0:30:00I'd be nothing.

0:30:00 > 0:30:03He needed to be the Richard Branson of Walford.

0:30:03 > 0:30:06None of that matters. It's what's inside that counts.

0:30:06 > 0:30:08That's what I'm worried about.

0:30:08 > 0:30:10I think Ian is motivated by money.

0:30:10 > 0:30:13It's been an obsession with him since he was a teenager.

0:30:13 > 0:30:16Ian, he likes to flash his cash, prove what a big man he is.

0:30:16 > 0:30:20- Look at the size of that wad. - You know what they say, big wad...

0:30:20 > 0:30:22- Huge wallet.- Something like that.

0:30:22 > 0:30:25Ian Beale has all his priorities so wrong.

0:30:25 > 0:30:30He cares more about making a profit in the chip shop than

0:30:30 > 0:30:32where his children are at night.

0:30:32 > 0:30:36With Ian, it's definitely a status thing.

0:30:36 > 0:30:38This man has massively insecure.

0:30:38 > 0:30:40That is the secret to writing Ian,

0:30:40 > 0:30:43whether it's acquiring a new sports car

0:30:43 > 0:30:47or acquiring a new girlfriend, it's always about the way that it looks.

0:30:47 > 0:30:51And things were looking pretty good in 1999

0:30:51 > 0:30:55when Ian managed to acquire this new model.

0:30:55 > 0:30:59Here's to the most beautiful woman in the world, Melanie Beale, my wife.

0:31:01 > 0:31:03Ian saw Mel as a kind of trophy blonde wife.

0:31:03 > 0:31:05But made him feel better about herself.

0:31:05 > 0:31:06He felt more of a man

0:31:06 > 0:31:09because he had a beautiful woman like that on his arm.

0:31:09 > 0:31:13Mel is the only girlfriend, wife of Ian who has not been able to

0:31:13 > 0:31:18buy the affection of full stop and so when he felt her slipping

0:31:18 > 0:31:22through his fingers, he really did sink about as low as you can go.

0:31:22 > 0:31:25In one of the worst crimes ever committed by a father,

0:31:25 > 0:31:28Ian persuaded Mel to marry him

0:31:28 > 0:31:31using the only collateral he had left, his young daughter's health.

0:31:33 > 0:31:40Ian told Mel his daughter was dying of cancer. So Mel would stay.

0:31:41 > 0:31:44And what about Lucy?

0:31:48 > 0:31:51In six months' time, she might not even be here by then.

0:31:51 > 0:31:56I mean, are you really going to be the one to take away from her.?

0:31:57 > 0:32:02- Her big fairy-tale wedding?- Only Ian Beale would do something like that.

0:32:02 > 0:32:07It's probably the worst thing he's ever done, don't you agree, Mel?

0:32:07 > 0:32:09I do.

0:32:09 > 0:32:11To Melanie, my wife.

0:32:18 > 0:32:21Yeah, Ian was very bad in that wedding

0:32:21 > 0:32:24and pretending his daughter had cancer when she didn't

0:32:24 > 0:32:26was probably one of the lowest things he'd ever done.

0:32:26 > 0:32:28And before the clock struck midnight,

0:32:28 > 0:32:33Mel had discovered the truth and Ian was declared morally bankrupt.

0:32:33 > 0:32:35I'm sorry.

0:32:35 > 0:32:39Yeah, I don't think that's going to cut it.

0:32:39 > 0:32:43She was just as appalled as everyone else would be watching the show.

0:32:43 > 0:32:45How could you?

0:32:45 > 0:32:48It's just Ian Beale all-over, isn't it?

0:32:48 > 0:32:51You let me think that she had cancer.

0:32:52 > 0:32:55I know. Stupid, I've really messed up.

0:32:55 > 0:32:59You lied to me, to Cathy...

0:32:59 > 0:33:01- What else could I do?- Tell the truth!

0:33:01 > 0:33:03How could I? I couldn't risk it.

0:33:03 > 0:33:06You can't cheat someone into loving you, Ian, don't you know that?

0:33:06 > 0:33:08Unforgivable actually

0:33:08 > 0:33:11and she rightly ran off on their wedding night I think.

0:33:11 > 0:33:13Good for her.

0:33:13 > 0:33:16Don't leave me like this, please.

0:33:16 > 0:33:19I need you, Mel. I love you.

0:33:19 > 0:33:22Well guess what, Ian, I don't love you.

0:33:22 > 0:33:24And I never have done.

0:33:24 > 0:33:26Three, two, one...

0:33:26 > 0:33:29BIG BEN SOUNDS

0:33:38 > 0:33:43He's a bumbling idiot because he's another one that everything

0:33:43 > 0:33:45he tries to do, it's always wrong.

0:33:45 > 0:33:48Ian actually pretended his daughter had cancer

0:33:48 > 0:33:51to con one woman into marrying him, you know?

0:33:51 > 0:33:54Yeah, try and keep up, Jane.

0:33:54 > 0:33:58Ian Beale tries to be a good dad, he does, and he wants to be a good

0:33:58 > 0:34:02dad but he is not capable of being a good anything

0:34:02 > 0:34:06because he's one of the most selfish people ever to walk Albert Square.

0:34:06 > 0:34:09Sadly, that is Ian Beale.

0:34:09 > 0:34:12Ian is of the many dads that don't quite make the grade

0:34:12 > 0:34:15but of all of our featured fathers, Masood is the man

0:34:15 > 0:34:19who takes most pride in his paternal responsibilities.

0:34:21 > 0:34:23Being Asian and coming from an Asian family,

0:34:23 > 0:34:27family comes before everything else.

0:34:27 > 0:34:30You take your responsibilities quite seriously.

0:34:30 > 0:34:33I'll be damned if I let you malign my family.

0:34:33 > 0:34:37I think pride plays a massive part in the character of Masood.

0:34:37 > 0:34:40In fact, the whole family have something much more in common

0:34:40 > 0:34:43with the old fashioned East End values of the Fowlers,

0:34:43 > 0:34:46for instance, in that keeping up appearances is vitally important

0:34:46 > 0:34:49to the household.

0:34:49 > 0:34:52And I think that's one of the flaws deep within Masood,

0:34:52 > 0:34:55his desire to be a good father plays against the pride

0:34:55 > 0:34:59he feels in being an upstanding member of the community.

0:34:59 > 0:35:01Well, we all know what pride comes before.

0:35:01 > 0:35:03Indeed we do, Peggy,

0:35:03 > 0:35:06and Masood's case it was a spectacular fall.

0:35:06 > 0:35:08Not so long ago, Masood was the man who had it all.

0:35:08 > 0:35:12# Oh, the good life... #

0:35:14 > 0:35:18A loving wife... a child destined for academic greatness...

0:35:18 > 0:35:19As soon as you leave for Oxford,

0:35:19 > 0:35:22we're going to go to Egypt, Africa, the Far East.

0:35:22 > 0:35:24- It's going to be amazing.- Yeah.

0:35:24 > 0:35:27And most importantly, his first-born son happily married

0:35:27 > 0:35:30and in love with a nice, respectable girl.

0:35:30 > 0:35:33Syed, I am so proud

0:35:33 > 0:35:35of the man you've become.

0:35:38 > 0:35:41Well, we all know what pride comes before.

0:35:41 > 0:35:42Yeah, all right, Peggy.

0:35:42 > 0:35:44This is all your fault, do you know that?

0:35:44 > 0:35:46- What?- Tam's not going to be a doctor.

0:35:48 > 0:35:50Just tell them.

0:35:51 > 0:35:55I'm a gay man in a sham marriage.

0:35:55 > 0:35:59Masood's pride took a massive tumble but was the worst part was

0:35:59 > 0:36:03realising that he was the last to know about Syed's sexuality.

0:36:03 > 0:36:06Masood discovering Syed was gay

0:36:06 > 0:36:08came right at the tail-end of everything.

0:36:08 > 0:36:11Zainab had found out, Tamwar had found out.

0:36:11 > 0:36:13Everyone had known except Masood.

0:36:13 > 0:36:17- Did you know about Syed? - I found out just before the wedding.

0:36:17 > 0:36:20- You let him go through with it knowing all along... - What was I supposed to do?

0:36:20 > 0:36:22You were supposed to tell me, Zainab!

0:36:22 > 0:36:26Given that he's a postman and knows everyone else's business,

0:36:26 > 0:36:28the one thing he didn't know was that his own son was gay.

0:36:28 > 0:36:32Anyone would think you were ashamed. Dad!

0:36:32 > 0:36:34Of your gay son.

0:36:34 > 0:36:36I think he was in a terrible situation with my Syed

0:36:36 > 0:36:38because he loves him clearly.

0:36:39 > 0:36:43Or maybe it is his big, gay boyfriend that really offends you.

0:36:43 > 0:36:46- I am sick of people ignoring me. - Be quiet, son.

0:36:46 > 0:36:48That's it, Masood, sweep it under the carpet.

0:36:48 > 0:36:51Having said that, Masood and Syed at their best

0:36:51 > 0:36:54have had some lovely father/son moments.

0:36:54 > 0:36:56I know you've had to be brave.

0:36:59 > 0:37:00But accepting what you are...

0:37:00 > 0:37:02that's strength.

0:37:03 > 0:37:06He's torn. He really wants this relationship with his son

0:37:06 > 0:37:09and Syed wants this relationship with his dad.

0:37:09 > 0:37:12In fact, all Masood ever wanted was to be a good father

0:37:12 > 0:37:14but his pride has been his downfall.

0:37:14 > 0:37:16Now, Zainab has chucked him out,

0:37:16 > 0:37:20- Tamwar one seems to have forgotten who he is... - I'm your father!

0:37:20 > 0:37:23And his relationship with Syed is still a bit strained.

0:37:23 > 0:37:27I feel like there is hope for that relationship because Nitin

0:37:27 > 0:37:29plays him so brilliantly

0:37:29 > 0:37:32and because he's a genuinely likeable man, isn't he?

0:37:32 > 0:37:35You can't really believe that Masood could stay angry

0:37:35 > 0:37:37with anyone for long.

0:37:37 > 0:37:40Masood may not be able to stay angry with anyone

0:37:40 > 0:37:43but for Eddie Moon, it's a different story.

0:37:43 > 0:37:46Still reeling from Vanessa's revelations of Michael's betrayal,

0:37:46 > 0:37:51not only was he about angry, he was about to get even.

0:37:51 > 0:37:53It's a hard-hitting time for Eddie as he was just

0:37:53 > 0:37:56accepting his sons and getting his family back together.

0:37:56 > 0:37:59He's not going to just sit back and take it

0:37:59 > 0:38:03and wallow in self-pity because that isn't him...

0:38:03 > 0:38:07at all.

0:38:07 > 0:38:10At this point in the Moon family story,

0:38:10 > 0:38:15we're coming in at the end of a 25- year conflict between father and son.

0:38:15 > 0:38:19It's like a game that has been played out of all those years,

0:38:19 > 0:38:22of rejection and alienation.

0:38:22 > 0:38:24And now it's the endgame of it,

0:38:24 > 0:38:27so the question is who is going to come out on top?

0:38:29 > 0:38:32Now he knows what Michael is capable of, it's time

0:38:32 > 0:38:35for Eddie to show everyone who's the daddy.

0:38:35 > 0:38:36First positions.

0:38:36 > 0:38:39And teach Michael a lesson he'll never forget.

0:38:39 > 0:38:43This is what you call payback time. He's done some wicked things

0:38:43 > 0:38:45and now he's going to find out how it feels

0:38:45 > 0:38:48to be on the receiving end.

0:38:48 > 0:38:52Eddie Moon has convinced Vanessa that it's a good idea

0:38:52 > 0:38:54to have burgled the boxing gym.

0:38:54 > 0:38:55Here's the door code,

0:38:55 > 0:38:59that's the front door to the gym and that one's the safe.

0:38:59 > 0:39:02They're going to steal money from the safe for them

0:39:02 > 0:39:05to run off together basically to Spain and live with his daughter.

0:39:05 > 0:39:07OK, from the top...

0:39:07 > 0:39:11- Is this shirt right?- No, it will be changed. This is a final rehearsal.

0:39:11 > 0:39:13OK.

0:39:13 > 0:39:15OK, let's rehearse.

0:39:15 > 0:39:17The CCTV is never switched on.

0:39:17 > 0:39:20- How do you know that? - Well, because I do.

0:39:20 > 0:39:24Stay focused, don't panic.

0:39:25 > 0:39:28But what Vanessa doesn't know is that Eddie

0:39:28 > 0:39:31is setting Vanessa up completely.

0:39:32 > 0:39:34So this scene is when we find out

0:39:34 > 0:39:37that you are not allowed to mess with Eddie Moon.

0:39:37 > 0:39:40Tyler, Anthony, down here now!

0:39:40 > 0:39:42Eddie' been really pushed to the limits

0:39:42 > 0:39:46and he's risen to the situation and has dealt with it accordingly.

0:39:46 > 0:39:50There's a little crossover between Eddie and Michael.

0:39:50 > 0:39:53If you put Eddy in a corner,

0:39:53 > 0:39:57then he can be crafty and quite steely.

0:39:57 > 0:40:01It won't be long until Michael feels the force of his father's wrath.

0:40:01 > 0:40:05Nothing unusual there though because in Albert Square, wrath is rife.

0:40:06 > 0:40:09There's a lot of wrath on the square, isn't there,

0:40:09 > 0:40:11there's no doubt about that.

0:40:11 > 0:40:14It's the bread and butter of EastEnders, isn't it, really?

0:40:14 > 0:40:16And it when it comes to fatherly fury,

0:40:16 > 0:40:19one man stands out above all the rest.

0:40:20 > 0:40:24I think Phil has been a very interesting dad

0:40:24 > 0:40:25with the dealing with his son.

0:40:25 > 0:40:28What's that supposed to mean, eh?

0:40:28 > 0:40:32Phil is a very, very angry man and we're very fortunate in having

0:40:32 > 0:40:35an actor in Steve McFadden who does angry very well indeed.

0:40:35 > 0:40:39- Violence never solved anything. - Well, I don't know about that.

0:40:46 > 0:40:49Phil as a dad is useless.

0:40:49 > 0:40:52I can't think of a worse or more deplorable role model

0:40:52 > 0:40:55as a father as Phil Mitchell.

0:40:55 > 0:40:56- Leave him alone.- You're hurting me.

0:40:56 > 0:40:58Not recommended. Ask Ben.

0:40:58 > 0:41:00What do think you're doing?

0:41:00 > 0:41:03I'm going to do what my old man would have done to me,

0:41:03 > 0:41:06I'm going to tan his backside, that's what I'm going to do.

0:41:06 > 0:41:08He is a bully, a thug.

0:41:08 > 0:41:11- What have you done? - I couldn't put together in one go.

0:41:11 > 0:41:14Well, you've totally ruined it now, ain't you?

0:41:14 > 0:41:18- All in all, he's a terrible dad. - Who do you think you are?!

0:41:18 > 0:41:22When he goes nose-to-nose with you, my God, that's going to send your heart racing, leaping.

0:41:22 > 0:41:26Do you Know What, Phil, you should write a book: Child Abuse by Philip Mitchell.

0:41:26 > 0:41:31- Why don't you shut your mouth, Beale?- Oh, yeah, go on. Do what you always do, hit him.- Thanks, love.

0:41:31 > 0:41:35But where does all this anger come from? Perhaps Charlie Brooks knows.

0:41:35 > 0:41:38Phil was brought up in a very specific way by his own father

0:41:38 > 0:41:40and thinks that's the right way to be,

0:41:40 > 0:41:43dragging them around and giving them a bit of a hiding.

0:41:43 > 0:41:48He finds it acceptable because that is how his father treated him.

0:41:48 > 0:41:52Ben certainly takes the brunt of his dad's anger.

0:41:53 > 0:41:56Come on, stand up, be a man and take it.

0:41:56 > 0:41:58Ben is always trying to please Phil

0:41:58 > 0:42:03and it must be absolutely horrendous for him, to have a father like Phil.

0:42:03 > 0:42:08In fact, father and son could not be more different if they tried.

0:42:08 > 0:42:12Ben liked Billy Elliott, musicals and probably Liza Minelli.

0:42:15 > 0:42:19He was always going to be the complete opposite of Phil.

0:42:19 > 0:42:23He was going to be slightly effeminate, into dancing

0:42:23 > 0:42:25and acting and what's not, just to make him

0:42:25 > 0:42:28appear everything that Phil isn't basically.

0:42:30 > 0:42:32Oh, that's not good.

0:42:32 > 0:42:34He's a boy. You've got him dressed up like

0:42:34 > 0:42:37some drag show Christmas dinner, dancing around like a proper nancy.

0:42:37 > 0:42:40That's like the Antichrist for Phil, isn't it?

0:42:40 > 0:42:44So, he didn't take too kindly to any of that.

0:42:44 > 0:42:46Are you ashamed of me?

0:42:46 > 0:42:50I'm not ashamed of you, you just need to stand up for yourself.

0:42:50 > 0:42:53So that's exactly what then did but perhaps it wasn't

0:42:53 > 0:42:56the best advice because he ended up in a juvenile detention centre.

0:42:56 > 0:42:59I sentence you to a 15-month detention and training order.

0:42:59 > 0:43:02- Ben!- Dad!

0:43:02 > 0:43:04Who knows what goes on in those places

0:43:04 > 0:43:07but when Ben emerged he looked like a completely different boy.

0:43:07 > 0:43:10I don't know what happened to you inside that prison

0:43:10 > 0:43:12but half the time I don't recognise you any more.

0:43:12 > 0:43:15Ben has changed to an extent to please his dad.

0:43:15 > 0:43:17Your son is a vicious bully.

0:43:17 > 0:43:19- Shirley, I'll sort it out. - No, you won't.

0:43:19 > 0:43:24- He's my son, isn't he?- Yeah, and he's proving that all right.

0:43:26 > 0:43:28The lashing out, and the attacks,

0:43:28 > 0:43:30that's what he's seen all his life, growing up,

0:43:30 > 0:43:32it's what he's seen his dad do.

0:43:32 > 0:43:39Phil is a very manly, hands-on guy. Maybe he tries to emulate that for a bit.

0:43:39 > 0:43:42That's what you always say, isn't it? Actions speak louder than words.

0:43:42 > 0:43:44What's that supposed to mean?

0:43:46 > 0:43:52I suppose Phil gets aggro about Ben being a new-found pain in the bum.

0:43:52 > 0:43:55But I think he probably deep down likes it,

0:43:55 > 0:43:58because he's starting to get the thug son he wanted.

0:43:58 > 0:44:03You little beauty! Come here!

0:44:03 > 0:44:06For me, what's at the heart of Phil is a man who is desperate

0:44:06 > 0:44:07to be a good father.

0:44:09 > 0:44:11Don't you think it's a bit late to start playing father and son?

0:44:11 > 0:44:13I'm not "playing" anything.

0:44:13 > 0:44:16The fact that he is so desperate to reach out to his son

0:44:16 > 0:44:18but doesn't quite have the words to do so.

0:44:18 > 0:44:21That's what makes that relationship so interesting.

0:44:21 > 0:44:25- You're just some bloke that got my mum pregnant.- You are my son.

0:44:25 > 0:44:28Go on. Hit me then.

0:44:28 > 0:44:31Cos that's what Mitchell dads do, innit?

0:44:31 > 0:44:34While Phil may have uncovered the fighter in Ben,

0:44:34 > 0:44:37he's still yet to come to terms with the lover.

0:44:37 > 0:44:39I'm sorry.

0:44:39 > 0:44:44Phil is about as unreconstructed a man as it's possible to be.

0:44:44 > 0:44:48And so when his son admits that he kissed a boy,

0:44:48 > 0:44:53shock, horror, I don't think it is much of a surprise to Phil,

0:44:53 > 0:44:56actually, he's probably been dreading this news for many years.

0:44:56 > 0:44:59But it is still not something he particularly wants to hear.

0:44:59 > 0:45:04And how Phil reacts really kicks off the next big story for the Mitchells.

0:45:04 > 0:45:08- This conversation never happened, all right?- You can't just leave it!

0:45:08 > 0:45:10Yes, I can! Get out of my way!

0:45:10 > 0:45:13This arc that we're writing for Ben is a long one.

0:45:13 > 0:45:17And he will learn wrath, from Phil.

0:45:17 > 0:45:20Wrath is just one of the many sins you can learn from your father

0:45:20 > 0:45:24but it's probably not as much fun as learning about gluttony, as we're about to find out.

0:45:24 > 0:45:29It may surprise you to learn that gluttony isn't all about over-indulging in food.

0:45:29 > 0:45:33If it was, we could focus our attentions entirely on this man.

0:45:33 > 0:45:36Yes, it's the champion of Walford,

0:45:36 > 0:45:39the one, the only, Barry 'The Belly' Evans!

0:45:39 > 0:45:42ALL: Barry! Barry! Barry!

0:45:45 > 0:45:46Yeah!

0:45:46 > 0:45:51In fact, the dad-ly sin of gluttony refers to a father who over-indulges his children.

0:45:51 > 0:45:55And on Albert Square, this man was the biggest culprit.

0:45:58 > 0:46:00Frank the biggest heart on the show.

0:46:00 > 0:46:03And he always wanted to be a great dad, and his fear was that he wasn't.

0:46:03 > 0:46:06And I think he overcompensated, so he gave Janine too much

0:46:06 > 0:46:08and it didn't do her any favours.

0:46:12 > 0:46:14Back when Janine looked like this

0:46:14 > 0:46:17whatever Frank's little sweetheart wanted, she got.

0:46:17 > 0:46:19Even in those early years

0:46:19 > 0:46:22you see Frank being that kind of doting father,

0:46:22 > 0:46:25kind of making up for his shortcomings,

0:46:25 > 0:46:27spoiling her, indulging her.

0:46:27 > 0:46:29What is your pleasure, young lady?

0:46:29 > 0:46:30She wants a gin and tonic.

0:46:30 > 0:46:32She wants a gin and tonic!

0:46:32 > 0:46:35He spoilt her rotten, I think, when she was young.

0:46:35 > 0:46:38You know, he bought her things all the time.

0:46:38 > 0:46:40- I only want to make you happy. - I am happy!

0:46:40 > 0:46:43She was a very sort of spoilt, obnoxious child.

0:46:43 > 0:46:45- You sit down there and...- Get off!

0:46:46 > 0:46:48You're a fat old cow and I hate you!

0:46:49 > 0:46:52Go on then, hit me, and see what me dad says!

0:46:52 > 0:46:56I remember young Janine, all three of them, very well, actually.

0:46:56 > 0:46:58Particularly when she turned Greek for a couple of months!

0:46:58 > 0:47:01But what's interesting about Janine

0:47:01 > 0:47:04is her father was probably the most flawed in EastEnders history.

0:47:04 > 0:47:06Frank was such a great character

0:47:06 > 0:47:08because he just made mistakes all the time.

0:47:08 > 0:47:10He may have made mistakes

0:47:10 > 0:47:14but Frank Butcher also provided us with hours of entertainment.

0:47:14 > 0:47:18Frank was such a big personality. Being a dad was just a small part of it.

0:47:22 > 0:47:24You've got this kind of big showman, you know?

0:47:24 > 0:47:26Naked with a bow tie, smiling,

0:47:26 > 0:47:29rose in his mouth, always got an answer for everything.

0:47:29 > 0:47:33And who wouldn't want a dad that wanders around in nothing but a bow tie?

0:47:33 > 0:47:37He's really warm and paternal and fun.

0:47:37 > 0:47:39So that side of being a dad

0:47:39 > 0:47:40he was great at.

0:47:40 > 0:47:43But again, he was kind of selfish, and when it came to it,

0:47:43 > 0:47:45he wouldn't really be there.

0:47:45 > 0:47:48Well, that's a bit of an understatement.

0:47:48 > 0:47:51In fact, Frank abandoned his kids a total of eight times.

0:47:54 > 0:47:56Oh, he made more comebacks than Status Quo, didn't he?

0:47:56 > 0:47:59What would you do if Frank Butcher was your dad?

0:47:59 > 0:48:02He's in, he's out, he's there, he's not.

0:48:02 > 0:48:05All that coming and going was bound to have repercussions.

0:48:05 > 0:48:08Eventually, Frank's little princess turned into a little monster.

0:48:08 > 0:48:10I've got to learn to fight my own battles now.

0:48:13 > 0:48:16He definitely had the ability to wrap him around her little finger.

0:48:16 > 0:48:20I think a lot of that may have come from guilty because he probably knew,

0:48:20 > 0:48:22you know, you can't buy somebody's love

0:48:22 > 0:48:27showering them with presents when all the want is your time, really.

0:48:27 > 0:48:29What are you laughing at?

0:48:31 > 0:48:34You can absolutely trace Janine's roots in Frank.

0:48:34 > 0:48:38The trouble is, Janine honed her skills with Frank,

0:48:38 > 0:48:41learning she could get exactly what she wanted, and when she wanted it,

0:48:41 > 0:48:44but when she became an adult, that became, kind of,

0:48:44 > 0:48:47instead of demanding a new bracelet or a new watch,

0:48:47 > 0:48:49it was, "I want to throw someone off a cliff,

0:48:49 > 0:48:53"cos I don't want to be married any more." So it's Frank's fault.

0:48:53 > 0:48:57So, no matter how lovable they are, no father is flawless.

0:48:57 > 0:48:59But there is one man who went beyond dad-ly sin

0:48:59 > 0:49:03and ventured far into the dark side.

0:49:03 > 0:49:06Number one, my dad. Archie.

0:49:06 > 0:49:10He was the dad that a lot of people want...

0:49:10 > 0:49:14minus the murdering, kind of, rapist part.

0:49:14 > 0:49:21Archie as a dad - you can even give him that name - was horrendous.

0:49:21 > 0:49:23Probably the worst dad you could ever wish for.

0:49:23 > 0:49:28Archie goes beyond sin. Beyond original sin.

0:49:28 > 0:49:30He was just evil personified.

0:49:30 > 0:49:33He abused Ronnie. Yeah, he's the worst.

0:49:33 > 0:49:37No-one could have foreseen how evil Archie would become.

0:49:37 > 0:49:40- I know girls like you.- I bet you do.

0:49:40 > 0:49:42Only one thing keeps your mouth shut.

0:49:42 > 0:49:45You sad old man.

0:49:45 > 0:49:49When Archie was first conceived, he wasn't going to be quite that dark.

0:49:49 > 0:49:53But there was just something in the way he played him

0:49:53 > 0:49:58that made me think, "Yeah, let's make him really, spectacularly evil."

0:49:58 > 0:50:03Without doubt, Archie Mitchell was the most despicable dad to ever walk the streets of Walford.

0:50:03 > 0:50:08Yet it took a while for everyone to see him for the nasty piece of work he really was.

0:50:08 > 0:50:14Archie was probably the most charming dad, but also the most villainous.

0:50:17 > 0:50:21You're no match for me, girl, you never were!

0:50:21 > 0:50:26That's the problem with the devil, you don't recognise he's in disguise till it's too late.

0:50:26 > 0:50:30Archie as a character has two sides, for me.

0:50:30 > 0:50:34The side that Roxy saw was the perfect father, perfect gentleman,

0:50:34 > 0:50:36he was loving, kind, generous, honest.

0:50:36 > 0:50:39And the side that everyone else saw

0:50:39 > 0:50:44was that he was a liar, rapist, paedophile, and murderer.

0:50:44 > 0:50:48La-la-la-la-la! You know what, Ron? You got a problem with dad,

0:50:48 > 0:50:51that's your problem, I don't want to know.

0:50:51 > 0:50:54Archie was an amazing character.

0:50:54 > 0:51:00Even that very first time you met him, you saw immediately something very dark, very horrible here,

0:51:00 > 0:51:04and you instantly knew that something here just isn't right.

0:51:04 > 0:51:08(I'll kiss your gravestone when you're dead.)

0:51:09 > 0:51:13Ronnie had a while to wait but a year after his arrival on the square Archie met a sticky end,

0:51:13 > 0:51:17courtesy of the sharp end of the Queen Vic bust.

0:51:19 > 0:51:24It's really hard for me to say whether Archie deserved to die in that way or not,

0:51:24 > 0:51:29because I had such a different relationship with him, on screen.

0:51:29 > 0:51:32I do understand he was a bad, bad man.

0:51:32 > 0:51:38But, erm...does anyone deserve to die like that?

0:51:38 > 0:51:42Mind you, rapist, paedophile, maybe. Maybe, yeah.

0:51:44 > 0:51:46Quite rightly, Archie got his just desserts.

0:51:46 > 0:51:50And back in the present, Eddie was about to make sure that Michael got the same.

0:51:50 > 0:51:54Eddie is absolutely heartbroken to find out he's been double-crossed by Michael.

0:51:54 > 0:52:00So Eddie is forced to come up with a plan that sees him get the better of both Michael and Vanessa.

0:52:01 > 0:52:07Despite the rain, it's all smiles on location in Hertfordshire for the filming of Vanessa's last scene.

0:52:08 > 0:52:10But the lady in white

0:52:10 > 0:52:13will soon be smiling on the other side of her face.

0:52:13 > 0:52:14Action!

0:52:14 > 0:52:17Where have you been? I've been going out my mind.

0:52:17 > 0:52:20Eddie did the right thing in leaving Vanessa

0:52:20 > 0:52:22because he can't trust her.

0:52:22 > 0:52:24Eddie!

0:52:24 > 0:52:26Yeah, it's too little, too late, Vanessa,

0:52:26 > 0:52:28all that, "I genuinely quite like him."

0:52:28 > 0:52:30She took the money off Michael, she's a wrong'un!

0:52:30 > 0:52:33I say go and tell Carol what you did.

0:52:33 > 0:52:37But then it's probably not a good idea as the police were looking for you.

0:52:38 > 0:52:40Eddie! Eddie!

0:52:40 > 0:52:44As much as I would have love to have seen Vanessa and Eddie going off into the sunset

0:52:44 > 0:52:47I appreciate why Eddie did that.

0:52:51 > 0:52:53Actually, finally, we see her, in one episode

0:52:53 > 0:52:56where she is looking a little bit grubby in the old white suit,

0:52:56 > 0:53:00and that probably would have hurt her more than anything else!

0:53:01 > 0:53:04Eddie may have settled the score with Vanessa

0:53:04 > 0:53:07but his real vengeance was saved for his eldest son.

0:53:07 > 0:53:10Eddie's given Michael so many chances.

0:53:10 > 0:53:12So many chances.

0:53:12 > 0:53:14And although he's mucked up himself along the way,

0:53:14 > 0:53:18I just think this is the straw that broke the camel's back.

0:53:18 > 0:53:19Have you been in the safe?

0:53:19 > 0:53:21The money's missing. The money in the safe.

0:53:21 > 0:53:24Tell him I know where the money is.

0:53:24 > 0:53:29Instead of going round and shouting at Michael, venting his anger,

0:53:29 > 0:53:31he is quite calculated about it.

0:53:31 > 0:53:36You see the other side of Eddie. The slightly more darker side.

0:53:36 > 0:53:38He quite coldly extracts his revenge.

0:53:38 > 0:53:40How do you know where the money is?

0:53:40 > 0:53:43Cos I've stolen it.

0:53:43 > 0:53:46Eddie tells us that he's stolen Michael's money.

0:53:46 > 0:53:49And it just kind of snowballs from there, really.

0:53:49 > 0:53:52Was it just bad luck that you landed up in hospital?

0:53:52 > 0:53:54Fighting for your life?

0:53:54 > 0:53:56Or was the whole thing set up?

0:53:56 > 0:54:00Is it possible that the whole object of the exercise

0:54:00 > 0:54:04was to leave you brain-damaged?

0:54:04 > 0:54:05Or worse!

0:54:06 > 0:54:10We go to the gym and we find him, and everything was revealed.

0:54:10 > 0:54:13Wow. Yeah. That was a hard-hitting scene.

0:54:13 > 0:54:15So I got my son back.

0:54:15 > 0:54:18Imagine how I felt, Michael.

0:54:20 > 0:54:21To find out...

0:54:23 > 0:54:26..you just wanted to break my heart.

0:54:28 > 0:54:32The final big confrontation between Michael, Eddie, Anthony and Tyler

0:54:32 > 0:54:35that takes place in the gym, my natural instinct

0:54:35 > 0:54:37when I'm writing drama,

0:54:37 > 0:54:41is to find ways that indicate relationships can be healed.

0:54:41 > 0:54:47And I wanted, I think, something deep inside me, wanted the relationship to be healed,

0:54:47 > 0:54:49I didn't want it to be nasty.

0:54:49 > 0:54:50- Please.- Please, what?

0:54:50 > 0:54:54Just give me a chance! To explain...to explain to you!

0:54:54 > 0:54:57A chance? You, who were prepared to see his own brother die,

0:54:57 > 0:54:59just for the look on my face?!

0:54:59 > 0:55:03When Eddie says to Michael,

0:55:03 > 0:55:04"On your knees!"

0:55:04 > 0:55:08I didn't want to write it, at first, but once I'd got that mythical archetype,

0:55:08 > 0:55:11then I could write it, and it felt true and it felt right.

0:55:11 > 0:55:14If you had an ounce of decency in yourself,

0:55:14 > 0:55:18you'd be down on your knees, begging them for forgiveness!

0:55:20 > 0:55:22On your knees!

0:55:26 > 0:55:29Please...Dad!

0:55:29 > 0:55:31Too late for regrets, now. You've done what you've done, mate.

0:55:31 > 0:55:33I think at that point,

0:55:33 > 0:55:37that's when Eddie no longer regards Michael as a son.

0:55:37 > 0:55:43Don't call me "Dad". Cos you're not my son any more.

0:55:50 > 0:55:52It was really emotional.

0:55:52 > 0:55:56It was great to film, but it was so emotional.

0:55:56 > 0:55:59We was all crying, still crying after they called, "Cut!"

0:55:59 > 0:56:02It was draining. Quite draining.

0:56:02 > 0:56:05But me and Dave spoke the next day and said, when we drove home,

0:56:05 > 0:56:08we was just driving like zombies, cos we was just empty!

0:56:09 > 0:56:11The tears continue to fall,

0:56:11 > 0:56:14as after four months David's time on the square came to an end.

0:56:14 > 0:56:18It's like having a father figure here. He's been a true legend.

0:56:18 > 0:56:21He's a great actor, got great acting experience.

0:56:21 > 0:56:24He's been giving me tips all along the way.

0:56:24 > 0:56:27Him now leaving feels like a little part of me has left.

0:56:27 > 0:56:30It's been a joyful journey, as they say.

0:56:30 > 0:56:32And it's been a challenge.

0:56:32 > 0:56:37It's sad to see him go, because not only is he a very fine actor,

0:56:37 > 0:56:39he's fun to be around.

0:56:39 > 0:56:41I'm going to miss swooning over him in the cafeteria.

0:56:41 > 0:56:44Because I did! He is a very, very handsome man.

0:56:44 > 0:56:48All I'd like to say is, thank you for all your work.

0:56:48 > 0:56:51I wanted him to be here forever!

0:56:51 > 0:56:54Yeah, I was really sad to see David go.

0:56:54 > 0:56:57I think you're terrific. Thank you.

0:56:57 > 0:56:59The man is a proper gent, a proper star,

0:56:59 > 0:57:03and I'm hopeful we haven't seen the back of Eddie or David in EastEnders.

0:57:03 > 0:57:05We're going to miss him on the square, yeah.

0:57:05 > 0:57:08- I hope we've done him proud. - It's all been good.

0:57:08 > 0:57:12Of course I'm sad to see Eddie Moon go,

0:57:12 > 0:57:16but I'm also hopeful that he'll come back.

0:57:16 > 0:57:21So he'll stick around, cos the final showdown in his story is yet to be played.
