:00:16. > :00:20.Hello, and welcome to the final instalment of the night in our
:00:21. > :00:27.search to find Doctor Who's greatest monsters and villains, as voted for
:00:28. > :00:31.by you, the fans. So far tonight we have seen the Judoon in at ten, the
:00:32. > :00:36.Silurians at nine, and we have just seen the Ood at number eight. So who
:00:37. > :00:42.completes tonight's little round-up? Well, here's a little clue for you.
:00:43. > :00:47.Clues, what kind of clues? Well, I'm glad you asked, Rory. If I told you
:00:48. > :00:50.that in the 51st century, there would be spaceships manned by
:00:51. > :00:53.mechanical service droids that dressed as 18th century guests at a
:00:54. > :00:57.masquerade ball, you'd say, oi, mate, this must be some kind of
:00:58. > :01:17.wind-up. And you'd be right, Cockney man. Sort of.
:01:18. > :01:31.Yes, it is of course the Clockwork Droids. These creepy, mechanical
:01:32. > :01:35.doll-like baddies started out in life as service droids for a big old
:01:36. > :01:40.spaceship and its crew, their sole purpose being to maintain their
:01:41. > :01:43.ship. But after the ship became damaged and the required parts to
:01:44. > :01:46.fix it were non-forthcoming, the droids began to harvest relevant
:01:47. > :01:47.body parts from the crew, like a macabre episode of Scrapheap
:01:48. > :02:06.Challenge. It's at some point during this
:02:07. > :02:09.cannibalisation of the crew that that the Clockwork Droids take up
:02:10. > :02:14.stalking a young Madame De Pompadour in order to get their hands on her
:02:15. > :02:18.brain. Her brain? Really? Her ears. I was talking about her ears. Oh,
:02:19. > :02:22.well, Madame De Pompadour is just one of a long line of historical
:02:23. > :02:27.figures to appear in Doctor Who, including the likes of Winston
:02:28. > :02:31.Churchill, Van Gogh, and Caecilius. Hmm, looks familiar. Incidentally,
:02:32. > :02:38.in real life, good old Pompadour died from TB. That will teach her to
:02:39. > :02:41.keep badgers as pets. But I digress. The Clockwork Droids have opened a
:02:42. > :02:45.number of time windows that link directly to the bedroom of Madame De
:02:46. > :02:52.Pompadour, which they use to spy on her life in 18th century France.
:02:53. > :02:57.How long have you been standing there? Personally I prefer to spy on
:02:58. > :03:03.people from outside the bedroom. You know, like in a bush. That is just
:03:04. > :03:06.me. So coming up in this clockwork droid-tastic adventure, we get to
:03:07. > :03:09.see the magnificent Palace of Versailles, fire extinguishers of
:03:10. > :03:12.the future, and the Doctor smashing Madame De Pompadour's 18th century
:03:13. > :03:25.mirrors in with a horse. No, that's not a euphemism.
:03:26. > :03:33.This is, of course, The Girl In The Fireplace. I once woke up in a
:03:34. > :03:37.fireplace. Boy, did I sleep like a log that night. Come on, good joke,
:03:38. > :03:38.guys. We can't stop them.
:03:39. > :04:00.The clock is broken. He has watched over me my whole life
:04:01. > :04:12.and he will not desert me tonight. What are you talking about?
:04:13. > :04:14.What man? The only man, save you,
:04:15. > :04:17.I have ever loved. No, don't look like that, there's no
:04:18. > :04:20.time. You have your duties. You know what?
:04:21. > :05:43.I'll just have a quick scan... So, what's the date?
:05:44. > :05:48.How far have we gone? About 3,000 years into
:05:49. > :05:53.your future, give or take. The Dagmar Cluster.
:05:54. > :05:58.You're a long way from home, Mickey! It's so...realistic!
:05:59. > :06:11.Dear me, had some cowboys in here. So where's all that power going?
:06:12. > :06:32.Where'd all the crew go? Good question.
:06:33. > :06:34.No life readings on board. Well, we're in deep space, they
:06:35. > :06:38.didn't just nip out for a quick fag. No, I've checked
:06:39. > :06:41.all the smoking pods. Yeah. Someone's cooking.
:06:42. > :06:52.Sunday roast, definitely. Now, there's something you don't
:06:53. > :06:56.see in your average space ship. It can't be, that's the outer
:06:57. > :07:15.hull of the ship. Look! Hello. Can you tell me where you
:07:16. > :07:22.are, at the moment, Reinette? In my bedroom. Where's your bedroom?
:07:23. > :07:27.Where do you live, Reinette? Monsieur,
:07:28. > :07:34.what are you doing in my fireplace? Can you tell me what year it is?
:07:35. > :07:42.Of course I can! 1727. August is rubbish though -
:07:43. > :07:48.stay indoors. OK, that's all for now,
:07:49. > :07:50.thanks for your help. Hope you enjoy the rest of the fire.
:07:51. > :07:52.Night-night! What's that?
:07:53. > :08:06.No idea, just made it up. And on the other side of the...
:08:07. > :08:12."magic door", it's France in 1727? Right period French too. She was
:08:13. > :08:18.speaking English, I heard her. That's the Tardis,
:08:19. > :08:20.translates for you. Even French? It's OK! Don't scream, it's me.
:08:21. > :08:57.It's the fireplace man, look! We were talking. Just a moment ago.
:08:58. > :08:59.I was in your fireplace. Monsieur, that was weeks ago.
:09:00. > :09:08.That was months. Really? Need to get a man in. Who are you
:09:09. > :09:15.and what are you doing here? Just a bit scared, yeah,
:09:16. > :09:23.just a little tiny bit. and it's the only clock in
:09:24. > :09:36.the room...then what's that? break the clock. No-one notices the
:09:37. > :10:02.sound of one clock ticking, but two? You might start to wonder if
:10:03. > :10:08.you're really alone. Stay on the bed.
:10:09. > :10:10.Right in the middle. Don't put your hands
:10:11. > :10:37.or feet over the edge! You can answer her, you can answer
:10:38. > :11:23.me. What do you mean, incomplete? Even monsters from under the bed
:11:24. > :11:34.have nightmares. Don't you, monster? What do monsters have
:11:35. > :11:41.nightmares about? Me! Ha! Fire extinguisher.
:11:42. > :11:58.Where'd that thing come from? Here. Field trip to France. Some kind
:11:59. > :12:03.of basic camouflage protocol. Nice needle-work.
:12:04. > :12:06.Shame about the face! No, really, you are!
:12:07. > :12:13.You're gorgeous! Listen, seriously,
:12:14. > :12:21.I mean this from the heart, Go to the carriage, mother,
:12:22. > :13:38.I will join you there. You are to be congratulated
:13:39. > :13:46.on your persistence. And you do not appear to
:13:47. > :13:56.have aged a single day. Listen, lovely to catch up, but
:13:57. > :14:07.better be off, eh? Don't want your mother finding you
:14:08. > :14:10.up here with a strange man, do we? Strange?
:14:11. > :14:13.How could you be a stranger to me? I've known you since
:14:14. > :14:15.I was seven years old. Oh, you never want
:14:16. > :14:32.to listen to reason. No way! Reinette Poisson!
:14:33. > :15:15.Later Madame d'Etoiles?! Later still mistress of Louis XV!
:15:16. > :15:18.Uncrowned Queen of France! Actress, artist, musician, dancer,
:15:19. > :15:25.courtesan, fantastic gardener. I'm The Doctor! And I just
:15:26. > :15:36.snogged Madame de Pompadour! I tell them, I do! Rule one! There
:15:37. > :15:50.could be anything on this ship! What's that in the middle there?
:15:51. > :16:41.It's like it's wired in. So this is where you
:16:42. > :17:13.came from, eh, horsey? Oh, indeed. I, myself, am
:17:14. > :17:29.frequently inconsolable. He is the King and I love
:17:30. > :17:38.him with all my heart. Every woman in Paris
:17:39. > :17:52.knows your ambitions. You know, of course, that the King
:17:53. > :18:03.is to attend the Yew Tree ball... Is this an average day?
:18:04. > :18:13.Life with The Doctor, Mickey. It's France again.
:18:14. > :18:18.We can see France. I think we're looking
:18:19. > :18:23.through a mirror. Blimey, look at this guy!
:18:24. > :18:25.Who does he think he is? What's a horse doing
:18:26. > :18:40.on a space ship? See these? They're all over the
:18:41. > :18:46.place, on every deck. Deliberately arranged along the
:18:47. > :18:57.life of one particular woman. A space ship from the 51st Century
:18:58. > :19:02.stalking a woman from the 18th! So she got plans
:19:03. > :19:11.on being Queen then? No, he's already got a queen. She's
:19:12. > :19:15.got plans on being his mistress. Even her own title -
:19:16. > :19:36.Madame de Pompadour. The King's wife and the
:19:37. > :19:44.King's girlfriend? France. How long have you been
:19:45. > :19:58.standing there? Show yourself! Hello, Reinette, hasn't time flown!
:19:59. > :20:08.Fireplace man! I don't know,
:20:09. > :20:26.but it did when you were a child. Answer any and all
:20:27. > :20:38.questions put to you. That ship hasn't moved in over a
:20:39. > :20:49.year. What's taken you so long? Always comes down to that,
:20:50. > :20:56.doesn't it? The parts. What happened to the crew? Where
:20:57. > :21:00.are they? We did not have the parts. you didn't have the parts.
:21:01. > :21:14.So you used the crew. And there was a heart
:21:15. > :21:26.wired into machinery. No-one told it the crew
:21:27. > :21:35.weren't on the menu. What did you say the
:21:36. > :21:39.flight deck smelled of? ..Someone cooking...
:21:40. > :21:44.Flesh plus heat. You've opened up time windows,
:21:45. > :21:51.that takes colossal energy. Why come here, you could've
:21:52. > :21:54.gone to your repair yard. Instead you come to
:21:55. > :21:56.18th century France. Why? If you've got all of history to
:21:57. > :22:24.choose from, why specifically her? We are not the same!
:22:25. > :22:29.We are in no sense the same! It's back on the ship!
:22:30. > :22:36.Rose, take Mickey and Arthur, I let you keep Mickey.
:22:37. > :22:48.Now go, go, go! Well, Madame de Pompadour,
:22:49. > :23:13.Sarah Jane Smith... Cleopatra... You are in my memories.
:23:14. > :23:30.You walk among them. Actually there's a door just there,
:23:31. > :23:40.you might want to close. So impertinent a question,
:23:41. > :23:57.so early in the conversation. And for some reason that
:23:58. > :24:02.means you're not old enough. Sorry. You might find old
:24:03. > :24:07.memories reawakening. Side effect. What do you mean, alone? You've
:24:08. > :24:20.never been alone in your life. When did you start
:24:21. > :24:22.calling me Doctor? How can you bear it?
:24:23. > :24:32.How did you do that? A door, once opened, may be
:24:33. > :24:38.stepped through in either direction. This is the night
:24:39. > :24:51.you dance with the King. It's more than just
:24:52. > :25:05.a secret, isn't it? when every lonely little boy
:25:06. > :25:27.must learn how to dance. What is this?
:25:28. > :25:30.What's going on? Doctor? They're going to chop us up.
:25:31. > :25:35.Just like the crew! They're going to chop us and stick
:25:36. > :25:37.us all over their stupid space ship! And where's The Doctor?
:25:38. > :25:41.Where's the precious Doctor now? Been gone for flippin' hours, that's
:25:42. > :25:49.where he is! You are compatible. we didn't come here alone. Oh, no,
:25:50. > :25:59.and trust me, you wouldn't want Ever heard of the Daleks?
:26:00. > :26:10.Remember them? # I could have danced all night
:26:11. > :26:20.I could have danced all night...! # # And done a thousand...
:26:21. > :26:32.Have you met the French? Well, look at what the cat
:26:33. > :26:38.dragged in. The oncoming storm! D'you know, they'd never
:26:39. > :26:50.even seen a banana before? Always take a banana to a
:26:51. > :26:54.party, Rose. Bananas are good! Do you know what they were
:26:55. > :27:16.scanning Reinette's brain for? Know why?
:27:17. > :27:26.Cos this ship is 37 years old. Right, you two, that's
:27:27. > :28:14.enough lying about. Time we got the rest
:28:15. > :28:16.of the ship turned off. OK, all the time windows
:28:17. > :28:22.are controlled from here. Need to close them all down.
:28:23. > :28:26.Zeus plugs, where are my Zeus plugs? Had them a minute ago, I
:28:27. > :28:28.was using them as castanets. Why didn't they just open a
:28:29. > :28:31.time window to when she was 37? That's why I can't close the
:28:32. > :28:56.windows, there's an override. Right,
:28:57. > :29:05.many things about this are not good. Message from one of your little
:29:06. > :29:09.friends? Anything interesting? And this time they're
:29:10. > :29:35.bringing back her head. Madame de Pompadour...
:29:36. > :29:38.Please, don't scream or anything. Five years?
:29:39. > :29:47.Some time after your 37th birthday. I can't give you an exact date, it's
:29:48. > :29:52.a bit random. But they're coming. In a way...for us...it's
:29:53. > :29:58.already happening. I'm sorry, it's hard to explain -
:29:59. > :30:03.The Doctor does this better. Then be exact and I will be
:30:04. > :30:06.attentive. There isn't time. while I, weary traveller,
:30:07. > :30:50.must always take the slower path. So! In five years these
:30:51. > :30:55.creatures will return. What can be done?
:30:56. > :30:58.The Doctor says, keep them talking. They're kind of
:30:59. > :31:01.programmed to respond to you. But he cannot
:31:02. > :31:14.make his promises in person? He'll be there when you need him.
:31:15. > :31:18.That's the way it's got to be.
:31:19. > :31:20.It's the way it has always been. It seems you cannot have
:31:21. > :31:26.one without the other. The thing is,
:31:27. > :31:33.you weren't supposed to have either. Those creatures are
:31:34. > :31:37.messing with history. None of this was ever supposed to
:31:38. > :31:40.happen to you. Supposed to happen? It happened, child, and I would
:31:41. > :31:46.not have had it any other way. One may tolerate a world of
:31:47. > :31:53.demons for the sake of an angel. We've found it,
:31:54. > :32:06.right under our noses! SCREAMING
:32:07. > :32:23.What was that? The Time Window. The Doctor fixed
:32:24. > :32:26.an audio link. Those screams. REINETTE'S VOICE:
:32:27. > :32:35.'Are you there? Can you hear me? That's my voice. Rose, come on,
:32:36. > :32:42.we've got to go. But you and I both know,
:32:43. > :32:59.don't we, Rose? We must go!
:33:00. > :33:39.No-one is coming to help us. You found it, then! They knew I
:33:40. > :33:56.was coming, they've blocked it off. Where are we going?
:33:57. > :33:59.The teleport has limited range. We must have proximity
:34:00. > :34:01.to the time portal. Hyperplex this side, plate glass
:34:02. > :34:19.the other. We'd need a truck. No, smash the glass, smash the
:34:20. > :34:25.Time Window, there'd be no way back. Could everyone just calm down!
:34:26. > :34:31.Please! Such a commotion,
:34:32. > :34:35.such distressing noise. Kindly remember
:34:36. > :34:39.that this is Versailles. This is the Royal Court.
:34:40. > :34:47.And we are French. I have seen your world, I have no
:34:48. > :35:00.desire to set foot there again. You are merely the nightmare
:35:01. > :35:21.of my childhood. How many ticks left in that
:35:22. > :37:13.clockwork heart? I have often wished to see
:37:14. > :38:42.those stars a little closer. There were many doors
:38:43. > :39:05.between my world and yours. It's a pity. I think
:39:06. > :39:52.I would have enjoyed the slow path. I had it moved here and
:39:53. > :40:29.was exact in every detail. The fireplace from your bedroom!
:40:30. > :40:40...When did you do this? In the hope that a door once
:40:41. > :40:48.opened may some day open again. One never quite knows when
:40:49. > :40:54.one needs one's doctor. It appears undamaged.
:40:55. > :40:56.Do you think it will still work? You broke the bond with
:40:57. > :40:59.the ship when you moved it. Which means it was off-line when the
:41:00. > :41:06.mirror broke, that's what saved it. if I'm very, very, very,
:41:07. > :41:21.very lucky... Madame de Pompadour?
:41:22. > :41:41...Still want to see those stars? More than anything.
:41:42. > :41:43.Gimme two minutes. Pack a bag! Go to the window. Pick a star.
:41:44. > :42:00.Any star. How long did you wait?
:42:01. > :42:03.5? hours. Great! Where've you been? Explain later,
:42:04. > :42:10.into the Tardis. With you in a sec! She said you never
:42:11. > :42:48.looked a day older. So many years since I saw you last,
:42:49. > :43:03.but not a day of it on your face. Leaving Versailles
:43:04. > :43:31.for the last time. The Tardis can close down the Time
:43:32. > :44:45.Windows, now the droids have gone - should stop it causing
:44:46. > :44:50.any more trouble. Come on, Rose, time you showed
:44:51. > :45:24.me round the rest of this place. "The path has never seemed more slow
:45:25. > :45:33.and yet I fear I am nearing its end. "My days grow shorter now,
:45:34. > :45:51.and I am so very weak. So this is London. An
:45:52. > :47:02.alternative to our world, where everything's the same
:47:03. > :47:07.but a little bit different. What are they all doing?
:47:08. > :47:15.It's the earpieces... The prototype has passed every test,
:47:16. > :47:20.sir. It's working! I've seen them before...
:47:21. > :47:24.What are they? A skin of metal and a body
:47:25. > :47:30.that will never age!
