0:16:34 > 0:16:37Welcome to Doctor Who: The Ultimate Guide,
0:16:37 > 0:16:40where we celebrate 50 years of Doctor Who,
0:16:40 > 0:16:43visiting the many incarnations of the eccentric Time Lord,
0:16:43 > 0:16:47his travelling companions, and, of course, his many foes.
0:16:52 > 0:16:54Come with me.
0:17:02 > 0:17:06Now, if there was one man who knew how to take out a Dalek in style,
0:17:06 > 0:17:10it's Doctor number three, all-round man of action, Jon Pertwee.
0:17:10 > 0:17:13Probably the most flamboyant Doctor of the lot,
0:17:13 > 0:17:15number three became known as a bit of a dandy.
0:17:15 > 0:17:17Do you mean me?
0:17:17 > 0:17:20- Enormously flamboyant. - It's an excellent vintage.
0:17:20 > 0:17:22It's really a completely different phase.
0:17:22 > 0:17:24There was a bit of espionage about him.
0:17:24 > 0:17:26Nobody sends me anywhere, I'm a free agent.
0:17:26 > 0:17:30Very...majestic and powerful.
0:17:30 > 0:17:31I am a Time Lord.
0:17:31 > 0:17:35When Pertwee takes over the Doctor, he establishes the eccentric,
0:17:35 > 0:17:36amusing scientist.
0:17:36 > 0:17:39What Jon Pertwee brings to it, for the first time,
0:17:39 > 0:17:40is the action hero.
0:17:40 > 0:17:43With his frilly shirts, bravado and showmanship,
0:17:43 > 0:17:48this bombastic Time Lord was Liberace meets Bruce Lee.
0:17:48 > 0:17:49Yes, being a master of Venusian aikido,
0:17:49 > 0:17:52the third Doctor was not a man to mess with.
0:17:52 > 0:17:55He basically said, "Aaiieee!"
0:17:55 > 0:17:57And took everybody out.
0:17:57 > 0:17:58Aaaiieee!
0:17:58 > 0:18:02He's a very square-jawed, straight-down-the-line, heroic type.
0:18:02 > 0:18:07He's like your grandad, but he can do karate. That's cool.
0:18:07 > 0:18:09Ha!
0:18:09 > 0:18:12A fourth dan black belt grandpa.
0:18:12 > 0:18:15This was a straight-talking, no-nonsense Time Lord,
0:18:15 > 0:18:19who didn't suffer fools gladly, even when they were on his side.
0:18:19 > 0:18:21- I'm your new assistant.- Oh, no.
0:18:21 > 0:18:23Ham-fisted bun vendor!
0:18:23 > 0:18:26Ham-fisted bun vendor.
0:18:26 > 0:18:27Bun vendor?
0:18:27 > 0:18:29He may have had a harsh manner,
0:18:29 > 0:18:32but this Doctor certainly had a keen eye for detail.
0:18:32 > 0:18:35Good grief! It's a stegosaurus!
0:18:36 > 0:18:40When the threats appeared, Jon Pertwee's Doctor knew exactly
0:18:40 > 0:18:43what to do and he did this great look, like that.
0:18:44 > 0:18:46His reactions when the monsters appeared were superb.
0:18:46 > 0:18:48Doctor!
0:18:54 > 0:18:56Sonic screwdriver, like that.
0:18:56 > 0:18:58BEEPING
0:18:58 > 0:19:01WARBLING SCREAM
0:19:01 > 0:19:03Imprisoned on Earth
0:19:03 > 0:19:06and with his TARDIS grounded by his fellow Time Lords,
0:19:06 > 0:19:09the Doctor's adventures were now very much based in the modern world.
0:19:09 > 0:19:11That's interesting.
0:19:11 > 0:19:13He even had a proper job, working for UNIT,
0:19:13 > 0:19:16where his new companions included Liz Shaw...
0:19:16 > 0:19:17That's impossible.
0:19:17 > 0:19:20..Jo Grant, Sarah Jane Smith...
0:19:20 > 0:19:22We need somebody to make the coffee.
0:19:22 > 0:19:25..and favourite sparring partner, the Brigadier...
0:19:25 > 0:19:28- The Brigadier is an idiot.- ..with whom he rarely saw eye to eye.
0:19:28 > 0:19:31- I wouldn't like to have to order you.- I wouldn't advise you to try.
0:19:31 > 0:19:35It's this great voice, with this fiery energy behind it.
0:19:35 > 0:19:37If you cannot reverse the energy drain,
0:19:37 > 0:19:40the fabric of the entire universe could be torn apart.
0:19:42 > 0:19:45Though he never managed to fix his knackered TARDIS,
0:19:45 > 0:19:48the Doctor more than made up for it with his fleet of vehicles.
0:19:48 > 0:19:52The third Doctor was every inch the action man.
0:19:52 > 0:19:56He was a real adventurer in real life.
0:19:56 > 0:20:00And so any time there was a motorbike or anything,
0:20:00 > 0:20:03we were there, we were playing. It was fun.
0:20:03 > 0:20:06A bit more of a James Bond than we'd seen before.
0:20:07 > 0:20:09Yes, from motorbikes to jet skis.
0:20:09 > 0:20:11I remember he had a hover car.
0:20:11 > 0:20:12He had it all,
0:20:12 > 0:20:16including his trademark bright yellow Edwardian roadster, Bessie.
0:20:16 > 0:20:19Soon, even Bessie was left in the garage
0:20:19 > 0:20:23and he upgraded to his own specially created pimp wagon, the Whomobile.
0:20:23 > 0:20:26This new car of mine is exactly what I need.
0:20:26 > 0:20:29Pertwee spent five years as the Doctor,
0:20:29 > 0:20:31featuring in over 100 episodes.
0:20:31 > 0:20:34But the all-action third Doctor eventually succumbed
0:20:34 > 0:20:37to his inevitable demise at the hands of a huge
0:20:37 > 0:20:40and not entirely convincing spider.
0:20:40 > 0:20:42HIDEOUS SCREECHING
0:20:42 > 0:20:44Doctor!
0:20:44 > 0:20:46The Planet Of The Spiders. It was very sad.
0:20:46 > 0:20:48I didn't want him to go.
0:20:48 > 0:20:51Please...don't die.
0:20:54 > 0:20:55A tear, Sarah Jane?
0:20:55 > 0:20:56A tear...
0:20:56 > 0:20:58Sarah Jane?
0:20:58 > 0:21:01Don't cry, don't cry.
0:21:01 > 0:21:02And then...
0:21:02 > 0:21:04this regeneration happened.
0:21:08 > 0:21:11Well...here we go again.
0:21:11 > 0:21:13And so third regenerated to fourth
0:21:13 > 0:21:16and the role of the Doctor was never the same again.
0:21:16 > 0:21:20Once Jon Pertwee lays down those tracks, the other Doctors run on it.
0:21:20 > 0:21:23They're always a little bit action-y after that.
0:21:23 > 0:21:27- ..need a car.- Don't worry, I commandeered a vehicle.
0:21:27 > 0:21:29SIREN WAILS
0:21:29 > 0:21:34..have this wonderful comfort, that no matter how dreadful
0:21:34 > 0:21:38the aliens were, Jon Pertwee's Doctor would protect you
0:21:38 > 0:21:41and you were OK, and you just sort of travelled in his wake.
0:21:41 > 0:21:43He didn't pretend to be anything
0:21:43 > 0:21:45other than the cleverest man in the room.
0:21:51 > 0:21:53What was that?
0:21:53 > 0:21:55I don't know. A robot.
0:21:55 > 0:21:58Nope. It's not a robot.
0:21:58 > 0:22:01Cyberman! Get down!
0:22:02 > 0:22:06That's right, it's the Cybermen, the part steel, part human bad guys.
0:22:08 > 0:22:09I've seen them before.
0:22:09 > 0:22:11They're relentless, they're ruthless,
0:22:11 > 0:22:13and they know how to make an entrance.
0:22:19 > 0:22:22Most of all, Cybermen are just plain scary.
0:22:25 > 0:22:27I was always scared of Cybermen when I was a kid.
0:22:27 > 0:22:29The emotionless, facial expression.
0:22:29 > 0:22:32I guess it was the face that I was scared of.
0:22:34 > 0:22:35Terrified of that weird,
0:22:35 > 0:22:37blank expression that they have on their face.
0:22:39 > 0:22:43You are never quite sure what's going on behind that mask.
0:22:46 > 0:22:47What happens in there?
0:22:47 > 0:22:50The Cybermen were originally human beings,
0:22:50 > 0:22:54but gradually they replaced their weak mortal flesh with metal and plastic.
0:22:54 > 0:22:58They decided the way to go - stainless steel, you know?
0:22:58 > 0:23:01It is nonporous, it cleans easily. OK, it scratches.
0:23:01 > 0:23:05But you just get a Brillo Pad. Give it a rub, it's as good as new.
0:23:05 > 0:23:10- Excellent!- In the process, they lost their compassion.
0:23:10 > 0:23:11Don't give me those blank looks.
0:23:11 > 0:23:15- Along with all other emotions. - We feel nothing.
0:23:15 > 0:23:20Nevertheless, they managed to maintain a pretty strong yearning for world domination.
0:23:20 > 0:23:21Destroy them.
0:23:21 > 0:23:24Destroy them at once.
0:23:24 > 0:23:28Close enough to us for their differences to be utterly chilling.
0:23:29 > 0:23:30OK.
0:23:30 > 0:23:32Despite their relentlessness,
0:23:32 > 0:23:34the Cybermen were by no means invincible
0:23:34 > 0:23:35if you knew what you were doing.
0:23:35 > 0:23:40The Cybermen had this fatal flaw, they were severely allergic to gold.
0:23:43 > 0:23:46- Bullets are a waste of time with this lot.- Bullets won't stop them.
0:23:46 > 0:23:49What you need is a well-aimed ray gun, a spear-chucking alien,
0:23:49 > 0:23:52- or even a good old-fashioned bow and arrow.- A hit.
0:23:53 > 0:23:56And if all else fails, just knock his block off.
0:23:59 > 0:24:02I don't think I can take much more of this.
0:24:04 > 0:24:08But as we all know, every Doctor Who baddie needs a catch phrase.
0:24:08 > 0:24:12- And the Cybermen's is certainly easy to remember.- We are the Cybermen.
0:24:12 > 0:24:15- No, not that one.- You will be deleted.- Ah, that's better.
0:24:16 > 0:24:19Clearly they had "exterminate" for the Daleks.
0:24:19 > 0:24:22And then they were like, "What's another word for exterminate?"
0:24:22 > 0:24:27- You will be deleted.- "Erase?" - Delete.- Delete.
0:24:27 > 0:24:32- Very easy to remember.- I'm glad they went for "delete" over "back space".
0:24:38 > 0:24:43Well, I'm 45 years old. So my favourite Doctor is Tom Baker.
0:24:43 > 0:24:45HE WHISTLES
0:24:45 > 0:24:48- Would you like a jelly baby? - I've no choice about that.
0:24:48 > 0:24:50Spending seven years in the TARDIS,
0:24:50 > 0:24:55Tom Baker's Doctor was the longest serving and the most unpredictable.
0:24:55 > 0:24:58You simply don't know what's going to come out of that man's mouth
0:24:58 > 0:25:01or what is going on behind those remarkable eyes.
0:25:01 > 0:25:03All change at Venus for the Brighton line.
0:25:03 > 0:25:05SHE SIGHS HEAVILY, BANG
0:25:05 > 0:25:09- Was that bang big enough for you, Brigadier?- Nicely done, Doctor.
0:25:09 > 0:25:14- Tom Baker was eccentric, flamboyant. - You mustn't believe all they say.
0:25:14 > 0:25:16- His eyes!- Keep looking into my eyes!
0:25:18 > 0:25:21And sort of walking around like that. Casting a very big shadow.
0:25:21 > 0:25:26He was quite sort of imposing, quite sort of grand.
0:25:26 > 0:25:29- AS TOM BAKER:- Oh, my God, it's, like, all kicking off and that.
0:25:29 > 0:25:33- This is, like, so well bad, I'm going to have to totally, like, sort this out and that.- You stay here.
0:25:35 > 0:25:38With his playful nature and trademark flowing scarf,
0:25:38 > 0:25:43it didn't take long for the fourth Doctor to capture the public's imagination.
0:25:43 > 0:25:45Enormous zest.
0:25:46 > 0:25:49Bigger than the screen in which he was appearing, and yet it worked.
0:25:49 > 0:25:53He embodies, in all its weirdness, what the Doctor is,
0:25:53 > 0:25:55what the Doctor means.
0:25:55 > 0:25:58- AS TOM BAKER:- Home sapiens - puny, defenceless bipeds.
0:25:58 > 0:26:00They are indomitable!
0:26:01 > 0:26:06He bases a lot of his scenes on being four years old.
0:26:06 > 0:26:09- Do you think I might attract attention?- It is just possible.
0:26:09 > 0:26:12And probably offer you a jelly baby.
0:26:12 > 0:26:14Would you like a jelly baby? Do you care for a jelly baby?
0:26:14 > 0:26:18- Would you like a jelly baby?- Shut up!
0:26:18 > 0:26:20It was kind of acceptable back in the day.
0:26:20 > 0:26:22You'd be like, "Would you like a sweet?"
0:26:22 > 0:26:25Someone would be like, "That's a really lovely gesture."
0:26:25 > 0:26:27If you give someone a sweet now, they'd be like,
0:26:27 > 0:26:29"No, get away from me, you weirdo.
0:26:29 > 0:26:31"That's clearly got something in it."
0:26:31 > 0:26:34A simple "No, thank you" would have been sufficient.
0:26:34 > 0:26:37After the third Doctor's exile on Earth, this Doctor brought with him
0:26:37 > 0:26:39a new sense of adventure.
0:26:39 > 0:26:40I can't waste any more time.
0:26:40 > 0:26:42Things to do, places to go.
0:26:42 > 0:26:45He took us on a journey of dark tales in otherworldly universes
0:26:45 > 0:26:49which gave his era a Hammer horror feel.
0:26:49 > 0:26:51Mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha!
0:26:52 > 0:26:56By the end of Tom Baker's era, he'd defeated more villains
0:26:56 > 0:27:00and travelled to more places in time than any other Doctor before him.
0:27:00 > 0:27:01And if that wasn't enough,
0:27:01 > 0:27:04he was even crowned President of the Time Lords.
0:27:06 > 0:27:07I invest you...
0:27:07 > 0:27:12Lord President of the Supreme Council.
0:27:12 > 0:27:15In the end, the fourth Doctor succumbed to his regeneration
0:27:15 > 0:27:17in a suitably heroic fashion -
0:27:17 > 0:27:20saving the Earth from his evil nemesis, the Master.
0:27:21 > 0:27:25Leaving behind the legacy of creating arguably the most
0:27:25 > 0:27:26iconic Doctor of all time.
0:27:26 > 0:27:29I think whenever the Doctor's a bit quirky and eccentric,
0:27:29 > 0:27:34it makes them more human and more warm and lovable,
0:27:34 > 0:27:37and I think Tom Baker definitely had a lot of that about him.
0:27:42 > 0:27:46He was completely mesmerising. Full stop, Tom Baker.
0:27:47 > 0:27:48It's the end.
