0:10:34 > 0:10:36Welcome to Doctor Who The Ultimate Guide
0:10:36 > 0:10:39where we celebrate 50 years of Doctor Who.
0:10:39 > 0:10:41We're going to take a look at the genesis of this
0:10:41 > 0:10:45unconventional hero of sci-fi and his many faces.
0:10:52 > 0:10:53Come with me.
0:11:02 > 0:11:05Now, if there was one man who knew how to take out a Dalek in style,
0:11:05 > 0:11:10it's Doctor number three, all-round man of action, Jon Pertwee.
0:11:10 > 0:11:13Probably the most flamboyant Doctor of the lot,
0:11:13 > 0:11:15number three became known as a bit of a dandy.
0:11:15 > 0:11:16Do you mean me?
0:11:16 > 0:11:20- Enormously flamboyant. - It's an excellent vintage.
0:11:20 > 0:11:22It's really a completely different phase.
0:11:22 > 0:11:24There was a bit of espionage about him.
0:11:24 > 0:11:26Nobody sends me anywhere, I'm a free agent.
0:11:26 > 0:11:29Very... majestic and powerful.
0:11:29 > 0:11:31I am a Time Lord.
0:11:31 > 0:11:33When Jon Pertwee takes over the Doctor,
0:11:33 > 0:11:36he establishes the eccentric, amusing scientist.
0:11:36 > 0:11:38What Jon Pertwee brings to it, for the first time,
0:11:38 > 0:11:40is the action hero.
0:11:40 > 0:11:42SONIC SCREWDRIVER BEEPS
0:11:46 > 0:11:48Imprisoned on Earth and with his TARDIS grounded
0:11:48 > 0:11:50by his fellow Time Lords,
0:11:50 > 0:11:53the Doctor's adventures were now very much based in the modern world.
0:11:53 > 0:11:55That's interesting.
0:11:55 > 0:11:57He even had a proper job, working for UNIT,
0:11:57 > 0:12:00where his new companions included Liz Shaw...
0:12:00 > 0:12:01That's impossible.
0:12:01 > 0:12:04..Jo Grant, Sarah Jane Smith...
0:12:04 > 0:12:06We need somebody to make the coffee.
0:12:06 > 0:12:09..and favourite sparring partner, the Brigadier...
0:12:09 > 0:12:11- The Brigadier is an idiot.- ..with whom he rarely saw eye to eye.
0:12:11 > 0:12:15- I wouldn't like to have to order you.- I wouldn't advise you to try.
0:12:15 > 0:12:19It's this great voice, with this fiery energy behind it.
0:12:19 > 0:12:21If you cannot reverse the energy drain,
0:12:21 > 0:12:24the fabric of the entire universe could be torn apart.
0:12:26 > 0:12:29Though he never managed to fix his knackered TARDIS,
0:12:29 > 0:12:32the Doctor more than made up for it with his fleet of vehicles.
0:12:32 > 0:12:36The third Doctor was every inch the action man.
0:12:36 > 0:12:40He was a real adventurer in real life.
0:12:40 > 0:12:44And so any time there was a motorbike or anything,
0:12:44 > 0:12:47we were there, we were playing. It was fun.
0:12:47 > 0:12:49A bit more of a James Bond than we'd seen before.
0:12:51 > 0:12:54Yes, from motorbikes to jet skis...
0:12:54 > 0:12:55I remember he had a hover car.
0:12:55 > 0:12:56..he had it all,
0:12:56 > 0:13:01including his trademark bright yellow Edwardian roadster, Bessie.
0:13:01 > 0:13:03Soon, even Bessie was left in the garage
0:13:03 > 0:13:07and he upgraded to his own specially created pimp wagon, the Whomobile.
0:13:07 > 0:13:10This new car of mine is exactly what I need.
0:13:10 > 0:13:13Pertwee spent five years as the Doctor,
0:13:13 > 0:13:15featuring in over 100 episodes.
0:13:15 > 0:13:18But the all-action third Doctor eventually succumbed
0:13:18 > 0:13:21to his inevitable demise at the hands of a huge,
0:13:21 > 0:13:24and not entirely convincing, spider.
0:13:24 > 0:13:26HIDEOUS SCREECHING
0:13:26 > 0:13:28Doctor!
0:13:28 > 0:13:29The Planet Of The Spiders.
0:13:29 > 0:13:32It was very sad. I didn't want him to go.
0:13:32 > 0:13:34Please... don't die.
0:13:37 > 0:13:39- AS THE DOCTOR:- A tear, Sarah Jane?
0:13:39 > 0:13:40A tear...
0:13:40 > 0:13:43Sarah Jane?
0:13:43 > 0:13:44Don't cry, don't cry.
0:13:44 > 0:13:45And then...
0:13:47 > 0:13:49..this regeneration happened.
0:13:52 > 0:13:55Well... here we go again.
0:13:55 > 0:13:57And so third generated to fourth
0:13:57 > 0:14:00and the role of the Doctor was never the same again.
0:14:00 > 0:14:04Once Jon Pertwee lays down those tracks, the other Doctors run on it.
0:14:04 > 0:14:07They're always a little bit action-y after that.
0:14:07 > 0:14:10- Need a car.- Don't worry,
0:14:10 > 0:14:11I commandeered a vehicle.
0:14:11 > 0:14:14SIREN WAILS
0:14:14 > 0:14:17Have this wonderful comfort, that no matter how dreadful
0:14:17 > 0:14:22the aliens were, Jon Pertwee's Doctor would protect you
0:14:22 > 0:14:25and you were OK, and you just sort of travelled in his wake.
0:14:25 > 0:14:27He didn't pretend to be anything
0:14:27 > 0:14:29other than the cleverest man in the room.
0:14:39 > 0:14:44Well, I'm 45 years old. So my favourite Doctor is Tom Baker.
0:14:44 > 0:14:45HE WHISTLES
0:14:45 > 0:14:47Would you like a jelly baby?
0:14:47 > 0:14:48I've no choice about that.
0:14:48 > 0:14:51Spending seven years in the TARDIS,
0:14:51 > 0:14:55Tom Baker's Doctor was the longest serving and the most unpredictable.
0:14:55 > 0:14:59You simply don't know what's going to come out of that man's mouth
0:14:59 > 0:15:01or what is going on behind those remarkable eyes.
0:15:01 > 0:15:05All change at Venus for the Brighton line.
0:15:05 > 0:15:06SHE SIGHS HEAVILY, BANG
0:15:06 > 0:15:10- Was that bang big enough for you, Brigadier?- Nicely done, Doctor.
0:15:10 > 0:15:14- Tom Baker was eccentric, flamboyant. - You mustn't believe all they say.
0:15:14 > 0:15:18- His eyes!- Keep looking into my eyes!
0:15:18 > 0:15:22And sort of walking around like that. Casting a very big shadow.
0:15:22 > 0:15:25He was quite sort of imposing,
0:15:25 > 0:15:27quite sort of grand.
0:15:27 > 0:15:30- AS TOM BAKER:- Oh, my God, it's, like, all kicking off and that.
0:15:30 > 0:15:32This is, like, so well bad, I'm going to have to totally, like,
0:15:32 > 0:15:34- sort this out and that. - You stay here.
0:15:36 > 0:15:39With his playful nature and trademark flowing scarf,
0:15:39 > 0:15:43it didn't take long for the fourth Doctor to capture the public's imagination.
0:15:43 > 0:15:46Enormous zest.
0:15:46 > 0:15:50Bigger than the screen in which he was appearing, and yet it worked.
0:15:50 > 0:15:55He embodies, in all its weirdness, what the Doctor is,
0:15:55 > 0:15:56what the Doctor means.
0:15:56 > 0:16:00- AS TOM BAKER:- Home sapiens - puny, defenceless bipeds.
0:16:00 > 0:16:01They are indomitable!
0:16:02 > 0:16:06He bases a lot of his scenes on being four years old.
0:16:06 > 0:16:10- Do you think I might attract attention?- It is just possible.
0:16:10 > 0:16:13And probably offer you a jelly baby.
0:16:13 > 0:16:16Would you like a jelly baby? Do you care for a jelly baby?
0:16:16 > 0:16:18- Would you like a jelly baby?- Shut up!
0:16:18 > 0:16:21It was kind of acceptable back in the day.
0:16:21 > 0:16:23You'd be like, "Would you like a sweet?"
0:16:23 > 0:16:26Someone would be like, "That's a really lovely gesture."
0:16:26 > 0:16:28If you give someone a sweet now, they'd be like,
0:16:28 > 0:16:30"No, get away from me, you weirdo.
0:16:30 > 0:16:32"That's clearly got something in it."
0:16:32 > 0:16:34A simple "no, thank you" would have been sufficient.
0:16:34 > 0:16:38After the third Doctor's exile on Earth, this Doctor brought with him
0:16:38 > 0:16:39a new sense of adventure.
0:16:39 > 0:16:43I can't waste any more time. Things to do, places to go.
0:16:43 > 0:16:47He took us on a journey of dark tales in otherworldly universes
0:16:47 > 0:16:50which gave his era a Hammer horror feel.
0:16:50 > 0:16:52Mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha!
0:16:54 > 0:16:57By the end of Tom Baker's era, he'd defeated more villains
0:16:57 > 0:17:01and travelled to more places in time than any other Doctor before him.
0:17:01 > 0:17:02And if that wasn't enough,
0:17:02 > 0:17:06he was even crowned President of the Time Lords.
0:17:06 > 0:17:09I invest you...
0:17:09 > 0:17:12Lord President of the Supreme Council.
0:17:12 > 0:17:16In the end, the fourth Doctor succumbed to his regeneration
0:17:16 > 0:17:18in a suitably heroic fashion -
0:17:18 > 0:17:21saving the Earth from his evil nemesis, the Master.
0:17:22 > 0:17:25Leaving behind the legacy of creating arguably the most
0:17:25 > 0:17:27iconic Doctor of all time.
0:17:27 > 0:17:30I think whenever the Doctor's a bit quirky and eccentric,
0:17:30 > 0:17:35it makes them more human and more warm and lovable,
0:17:35 > 0:17:38and I think Tom Baker definitely had a lot of that about him.
0:17:42 > 0:17:47He was completely mesmerising. Full stop, Tom Baker.
0:17:47 > 0:17:49It's the end.
