0:00:02 > 0:00:06It was a typical summer's day for 2015.

0:00:06 > 0:00:08Bangor Pier in June.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15It happened to be the first day of shoot for It's My Shout productions,

0:00:15 > 0:00:17a film training scheme.

0:00:17 > 0:00:21For the next two months, 800 trainees and mentors

0:00:21 > 0:00:25would make eight short film dramas for BBC Wales and S4C.

0:00:28 > 0:00:33For young people, it's an opportunity to have a taste of the industry.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36Um, I'd like to get into acting, yeah, somehow.

0:00:36 > 0:00:39I'm not sure if I want to go stage or...

0:00:39 > 0:00:41- the TV or anything...- Yeah. - ..but definitely acting.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46The trainees are mentored by well-known actors

0:00:46 > 0:00:49from the film and television industry,

0:00:49 > 0:00:52and many of the young people have gone on to make their name

0:00:52 > 0:00:55in film, television and the West End.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59You don't need to be scared. You can go on your own.

0:00:59 > 0:01:03Will Thomas believes that this experience is unique.

0:01:03 > 0:01:08A growing girl like you shouldn't be afraid to stand on her own two feet.

0:01:08 > 0:01:11It is sadly the only growth industry we have in Wales

0:01:11 > 0:01:13and I think that it should be

0:01:13 > 0:01:17encouraged as much as we can, really, you know,

0:01:17 > 0:01:20'and involve young people as much as we can.'

0:01:20 > 0:01:22What's the matter with you?

0:01:22 > 0:01:25For the last 14 years, It's My Shout has made films

0:01:25 > 0:01:29with different communities in all parts of Wales.

0:01:29 > 0:01:33It also encourages new directors, producers and writers.

0:01:33 > 0:01:37The author of this film, Which Way Is Ireland?,

0:01:37 > 0:01:39based it on his own experience.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41'This is very much based on'

0:01:41 > 0:01:46my experiences with working with, um, Asperger's, autistic people,

0:01:46 > 0:01:51um, and their incredible minds and the way that they see the world,

0:01:51 > 0:01:57um, and I wanted to see if we... I could capture that, just in a...

0:01:57 > 0:01:59'in a split second.'

0:01:59 > 0:02:03Well, the thing I like about films and plays is the characters.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05I like the, like, what...

0:02:05 > 0:02:08how to get into their head and what makes them tick and things like that

0:02:08 > 0:02:10and Charlotte's really interesting.

0:02:10 > 0:02:14Well, I just try to focus on how she would feel,

0:02:14 > 0:02:15like how things affect her.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18Everything confuses her, so she doesn't get too emotional

0:02:18 > 0:02:21about things, because she doesn't really understand them completely

0:02:21 > 0:02:26and it's completely different from acting other characters.

0:02:26 > 0:02:30The scheme also encourages trainees behind the camera.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34For Will Thomas, it's actually performing with these trainees

0:02:34 > 0:02:38that makes him enthusiastic about the future of the industry.

0:02:38 > 0:02:42He can see them growing in confidence when they film.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46In working this morning, she was a little bit, um...

0:02:46 > 0:02:48'shy, you know.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50'By the time we finished, at half-past one, two o'clock,'

0:02:50 > 0:02:53she was an entirely different performer, you know.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56She had sort of found her feet and come out of herself a little,

0:02:56 > 0:02:59a little more, you know. It seems to have kind of

0:02:59 > 0:03:02enhanced a kind of, um, or encouraged a kind of...

0:03:02 > 0:03:04a confidence in them, really, you know,

0:03:04 > 0:03:06a confidence in their ability, you know.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09Well, it was just... It was so nice talking to them

0:03:09 > 0:03:14and, like, cos they've had so much experience and it's just like I...

0:03:14 > 0:03:17Not that I eavesdrop, but I can hear them talk to other people

0:03:17 > 0:03:19and I'm like, "OK."

0:03:19 > 0:03:21- Oh, psycho! - GIRLS LAUGH

0:03:21 > 0:03:23The standard over the years

0:03:23 > 0:03:26- has actually crept up and up and up, you know.- Yeah.

0:03:26 > 0:03:31Until now, it's almost on a par with, er, with a kind of, um...

0:03:31 > 0:03:35a professional outfit, really, because you've got

0:03:35 > 0:03:41so many excellent mentors, you know, camera guys, lighting, sound,

0:03:41 > 0:03:45you know, they're people that you've worked with professionally,

0:03:45 > 0:03:51you know, and, um, they're now giving their time to, um...

0:03:51 > 0:03:53to mentor these young people.

0:03:55 > 0:03:59Each film takes three days to shoot

0:03:59 > 0:04:02and, as well as playing the star role, Carian enjoyed

0:04:02 > 0:04:06the whole experience of making Which Way Is Ireland.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09I love meeting all the people and they've had so much experience

0:04:09 > 0:04:13already with filming things and it's so nice learning new things and

0:04:13 > 0:04:16it's just something I've never done before, it's really interesting.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18QUIET CHATTER

0:04:18 > 0:04:22During the first day of filming, there was a surprise for Carian.

0:04:22 > 0:04:27The crew found out that she was also celebrating her 18th birthday.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29# Happy birthday... #

0:04:29 > 0:04:31'I didn't tell anyone really that it was my birthday,

0:04:31 > 0:04:34'but my tutor told people that it was my birthday,

0:04:34 > 0:04:36'so they got me a cake and everything, which was nice.'
