0:00:20 > 0:00:24- Tonight, Treberfedd farmhouse, - post-restoration.

0:00:24 > 0:00:28- We'll see its amazing collection - of ancient paintings.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32- We'll also visit - Gwyn Morgans's Victorian house...

0:00:33 > 0:00:36- ..which is a mixture - of the old and the new.

0:00:37 > 0:00:41- Finally, a house which was a mill - and a scrap yard...

0:00:41 > 0:00:45- ..before Hefin Davies - turned it into a comfortable home.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47- Welcome to 04Wal.

0:00:52 > 0:00:56- This is Treberfedd farmhouse, - in the parish of Dihewyd.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00- The land was once - connected to Plas Llanllyr.

0:01:00 > 0:01:05- A reference is made to Treberfedd - as far back as 1649.

0:01:05 > 0:01:09- The farmhouse, in its present form, - dates back to 1802.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12- The building - had deteriorated badly...

0:01:12 > 0:01:16- ..and the task of restoring - this important building...

0:01:17 > 0:01:20- ..has fallen to architect, - Huw Emlyn Davies.

0:01:20 > 0:01:24- What work must be carried out - to secure the house?

0:01:24 > 0:01:26- The house - is in very poor condition.

0:01:28 > 0:01:32- The walls - have bowed quite considerably.

0:01:33 > 0:01:37- A large section of the house - must be demolished.

0:01:38 > 0:01:43- Almost the whole of the front wall, - for example, must be pulled down.

0:01:45 > 0:01:49- The same will happen to other walls, - at the rear of the house.

0:01:49 > 0:01:54- Those walls will then be rebuilt - but they will be plumb, this time!

0:01:54 > 0:01:59- They will be as near to an exact - copy of the walls you see today...

0:01:59 > 0:02:00- ..as we can achieve.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03- We will then put a new roof - over it all.

0:02:04 > 0:02:06- It will be a thatched roof.

0:02:06 > 0:02:11- There's already a thatched roof - underneath the corrugated iron.

0:02:12 > 0:02:16- We're very keen to rebuild it - in its original form.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19- The interior was untouched.

0:02:20 > 0:02:25- The wooden, in and out partitions - were still there...

0:02:25 > 0:02:28- ..just like the day - the house was built.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34- The partitions are still intact, - on both floors of the house.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37- The only modernisation - carried out here...

0:02:38 > 0:02:40- ..was the addition of a bathroom.

0:02:41 > 0:02:42- Shame on them!

0:02:53 > 0:02:59- The wall paintings are among - the house's most important features.

0:02:59 > 0:03:03- Examples can be seen in East Anglia - but they're rare in Wales.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06- They date back - to a time before 1800.

0:03:17 > 0:03:22- We're back in Treberfedd two years - later to see the finished house.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26- The house is now used - as an educational centre.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39- It must have felt as though - you'd never finish this house, Huw.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42- Did you encounter - any serious problems?

0:03:42 > 0:03:45- No, we didn't come across - any big problems.

0:03:46 > 0:03:50- Nothing more serious than you'd find - on any building site.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53- The scaffold was a big bonus, - over the winter.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58- It meant we could demolish - the walls, to the desired level...

0:03:58 > 0:04:00- ..and rebuild them.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03- It also gave workers - shelter from the rain.

0:04:04 > 0:04:09- That meant work could continue, - even in adverse weather conditions.

0:04:10 > 0:04:12- Work continued unhindered...

0:04:12 > 0:04:17- ..and the walls were protected, - during the rebuilding process.

0:04:18 > 0:04:23- We put everything back - as we found it, more or less.

0:04:23 > 0:04:27- The corrugated iron roof - is the exception to that, of course.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31- The windows, walls, doors - and slate roofs...

0:04:31 > 0:04:36- ..have been put back in the places - where they stood originally.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09- In we go, - through the tradesman's entrance.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11- Was this the kitchen?

0:05:11 > 0:05:13- Was this the kitchen?- - Yes, we think this was the kitchen.

0:05:14 > 0:05:18- There's a big fireplace - with a louver chimney here.

0:05:18 > 0:05:22- This is an example of something - that we had to reproduce.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26- There were traces of it here - but it had been removed.

0:05:27 > 0:05:29- We estimated its shape - and reproduced it.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33- What about the wooden panels, - behind me?

0:05:33 > 0:05:37- Did you salvage them - and put them back?

0:05:38 > 0:05:40- Yes, a lot of them were salvaged.

0:05:40 > 0:05:45- Some of the timber was unusable, - due to woodworm damage...

0:05:45 > 0:05:49- ..but we recreated those panels, - using newer wood.

0:05:50 > 0:05:56- We created them in the same pattern - and mouldings as the originals.

0:05:56 > 0:06:00- We then used them side-by-side - with the original panels.

0:06:12 > 0:06:14- A huge effort was made...

0:06:14 > 0:06:19- ..to furnish the house - in keeping with the period.

0:06:19 > 0:06:24- It was always the intention to - furnish it with old, Welsh pieces...

0:06:25 > 0:06:29- ..and, broadly speaking, - it's a success.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41- Up we go, to the bedrooms.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45- There are acres of wood here - and most of it is old.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49- They rescued - as much of the old wood as possible.

0:06:49 > 0:06:51- The ambience is unaltered.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55- There are three bedrooms here - - one large one...

0:06:55 > 0:07:00- ..and one small bedroom, - boxed in by wooden partitions.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02- The master bedroom is here.

0:07:03 > 0:07:04- Here it is.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07- As you can see, - the floor is original.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10- The planks - are wider than modern ones.

0:07:10 > 0:07:13- The old furniture - adds to the character.

0:07:13 > 0:07:17- The chair, the fantastic wardrobe - and the bed...

0:07:18 > 0:07:20- ..make this house feel cosy and old.

0:07:40 > 0:07:44- Huw, these wonderful wall paintings - are partly why we came here.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48- Do you know - anything about their history?

0:07:49 > 0:07:50- No, they're a mystery.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55- We have no idea why they're here...

0:07:55 > 0:08:02- ..in a house that dates back - to the early 19th century.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06- From what I can gather...

0:08:07 > 0:08:13- ..wall paintings were fashionable - in the mid-16th and 17th centuries.

0:08:16 > 0:08:20- The mystery - of the wall paintings deepens...

0:08:20 > 0:08:24- ..when you realise the picture - was cut off by the ceiling.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28- That suggests it went higher, - at one point.

0:08:28 > 0:08:30- It begs the question...

0:08:30 > 0:08:35- ..was this floor added some time - after the building was erected?

0:08:37 > 0:08:40- An expert - has worked on these paintings...

0:08:40 > 0:08:44- ..to draw them out and make them - a little more prominent.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48- The colours had faded substantially.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52- Our expert also brought more details - to the surface...

0:08:53 > 0:08:56- ..by scraping away - some of the whitewash.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58- He did a remarkable job.

0:09:24 > 0:09:29- Seeing the house finished, - like this, gives me great pleasure.

0:09:30 > 0:09:31- It's very satisfying...

0:09:32 > 0:09:37- ..to know I've helped save a part - of our heritage here, in Ceredigion.

0:09:37 > 0:09:42- It's wonderful to see a house which - is important to the local area...

0:09:42 > 0:09:45- ..recapture its former glory.

0:09:47 > 0:09:51- It's just as it was, centuries ago, - and that's wonderful.

0:10:04 > 0:10:04- 888

0:10:04 > 0:10:06- 888

0:10:44 > 0:10:46- I come from the Brecon area.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50- I was raised - in a farmhouse called Yscir Fawr.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54- That's why - I called my house Yscir Fach.

0:10:55 > 0:11:00- Much of the old furniture - in the house came from Yscir Fawr.

0:11:01 > 0:11:05- I bought some of the other items - in local shops.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14- Gwyn Morgans - is the owner of Yscir Fach.

0:11:14 > 0:11:18- He's a musician - who now designs houses and gardens.

0:11:28 > 0:11:30- When did you buy this house, Gwyn?

0:11:30 > 0:11:35- When did you buy this house, Gwyn?- - I first saw the house - around seven years ago.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38- It was in a terrible condition...

0:11:38 > 0:11:42- ..but I knew instantly - there was great potential here.

0:11:44 > 0:11:48- The doors and the windows - were in good condition...

0:11:48 > 0:11:51- ..and the walls were OK.

0:11:54 > 0:11:59- We had to start from scratch, - with everything else in the house.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02- The builders helped, of course.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05- What style did you give the house?

0:12:05 > 0:12:09- What style did you give the house?- - We wanted to keep - the house's character...

0:12:09 > 0:12:14- ..so we chose a Victorian style - for one part of the house.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18- The parlour, the kitchen...

0:12:19 > 0:12:22- ..and elements of the bedroom - are Victorian.

0:12:24 > 0:12:28- Other parts of the house - are quite contemporary.

0:12:46 > 0:12:47- This is the hall.

0:12:48 > 0:12:52- It's very traditional, other than - the red shade used on the walls.

0:12:53 > 0:12:58- The walls would originally have been - dark brown - a coffee colour.

0:12:58 > 0:13:03- The red walls are very welcoming - when you come in through the door.

0:13:03 > 0:13:08- The black and white floor tiles - make it an interesting composition.

0:13:08 > 0:13:09- It's nice.

0:13:10 > 0:13:12- The parlour is to my right.

0:13:12 > 0:13:16- This is like - stepping into Granny's parlour!

0:13:16 > 0:13:21- It's less damp and it isn't as cold, - you don't need five jumpers...

0:13:21 > 0:13:25- ..and it's a room that's used, - unlike many other parlours.

0:13:25 > 0:13:29- Gwyn is a musician - and he'd be lost without his piano.

0:13:30 > 0:13:35- I can hear a ticking clock and it - reminds me of my granny's parlour.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38- This is a pleasant experience, - mind you.

0:13:38 > 0:13:42- This room is used regularly - and it's warm and cosy.

0:14:13 > 0:14:15- The staircase leads to the bedrooms.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19- The red walls continue, - as we go upstairs.

0:14:21 > 0:14:26- In stark contrast, the guest bedroom - is very, very light and modern.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29- The bed frame is contemporary.

0:14:29 > 0:14:31- And yet, it isn't out of place.

0:14:32 > 0:14:36- It doesn't feel as if - it belongs in some other house.

0:14:36 > 0:14:38- Something links every room.

0:14:48 > 0:14:53- Gwyn sacrificed one bedroom - to create that bathroom.

0:14:53 > 0:14:58- The layout has been changed here, - which makes this a dark area.

0:14:58 > 0:15:03- This dark tunnel leads to - the light, bright master bedroom.

0:15:03 > 0:15:07- Like the guest bedroom, - this is contemporary and light.

0:15:08 > 0:15:12- The striking thing about this room - is the view over the fields.

0:15:13 > 0:15:14- Isn't it fantastic?

0:15:26 > 0:15:28- Which is your favourite room, Gwyn?

0:15:28 > 0:15:31- Which is your favourite room, Gwyn?- - The conservatory - is my favourite room.

0:15:32 > 0:15:34- I had it built last year.

0:15:37 > 0:15:38- I love sitting in here.

0:15:40 > 0:15:42- It's an extension of the garden.

0:15:42 > 0:15:44- It's wonderfully light.

0:15:46 > 0:15:51- It's a perfect place to grow plants - and it's a great party room.

0:16:05 > 0:16:07- I'm very happy in Yscir Fach.

0:16:07 > 0:16:10- It's in a quiet spot, - in the countryside...

0:16:10 > 0:16:13- ..but it's also close to town.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31- Hen Felin was a mill, - before it became a home.

0:16:31 > 0:16:36- This building has gone through - a remarkable transformation.

0:16:52 > 0:16:56- Hefin Davies lives in Hen Felin, - Betws Gwerful Goch.

0:16:56 > 0:17:00- He had the vision - to transform the mill into a home.

0:17:05 > 0:17:09- Had the old mill been in your family - for some years, Hefin?

0:17:10 > 0:17:13- Yes. - My grandfather worked in the mill.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16- He started working there - in the 1950s.

0:17:16 > 0:17:21- My father was interested in cars, - so he opened a scrap yard.

0:17:22 > 0:17:26- People flocked here to buy car parts - for over 25 years.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32- It was in remarkably good condition.

0:17:32 > 0:17:36- The roof was intact - and the joists were usable.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38- I played here, as a child.

0:17:38 > 0:17:41- It holds some good memories, for me.

0:17:41 > 0:17:45- That's why I felt compelled - to convert it into a home.

0:17:55 > 0:17:59- Did you know exactly - what sort of windows you wanted?

0:17:59 > 0:18:03- Yes. I had a clear picture - in my head of what I wanted.

0:18:03 > 0:18:06- I knew what style - and which colours I wanted.

0:18:07 > 0:18:11- I wanted to preserve - the character of the building.

0:18:12 > 0:18:15- I also knew what layout I wanted.

0:18:16 > 0:18:19- I'm delighted with the result.

0:18:40 > 0:18:41- I had four walls and a roof.

0:18:42 > 0:18:45- Apart from the third floor, - everything was open.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48- That's how - the old mill was designed.

0:18:51 > 0:18:55- I had a blank sheet of paper - and I took it from there.

0:18:55 > 0:18:57- I knew the exact layout I wanted.

0:18:58 > 0:19:01- I wanted a big, open living room - and a big kitchen.

0:19:02 > 0:19:06- I knew where I wanted the bedrooms - and the bathroom to be.

0:19:07 > 0:19:11- I laid down strips of wood, - painted red, on the floor...

0:19:12 > 0:19:16- ..to create the template - for the builders and carpenters.

0:19:16 > 0:19:18- They made sure it fitted.

0:19:18 > 0:19:22- What function did you have in mind - for this room?

0:19:22 > 0:19:25- How did you envisage yourself - using it?

0:19:25 > 0:19:28- I wanted a kitchen and living room, - in one.

0:19:28 > 0:19:33- I wanted everyone to gather - in this room to chat and drink tea.

0:19:33 > 0:19:36- I wanted a comfortable, cosy room.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40- I'm delighted - with the way it turned out.

0:19:55 > 0:19:58- Why did you - design the kitchen, like this?

0:19:59 > 0:20:04- I wanted to create two rooms, - without losing the open feel.

0:20:04 > 0:20:09- I put bricks and flowers there - to define the two separate areas.

0:20:09 > 0:20:13- Everything ties in neatly - with the old wood.

0:20:14 > 0:20:15- That's amazing.

0:20:15 > 0:20:20- Yes, I was fortunate that - the building was in good condition.

0:20:20 > 0:20:23- Time - hadn't wrecked anything in here.

0:20:23 > 0:20:27- All I had to do was clean the wood - and do the plastering.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31- Which other features did you design?

0:20:31 > 0:20:33- This is removable, isn't it?

0:20:34 > 0:20:36- Yes, this block slides out, like so.

0:20:36 > 0:20:40- I designed it like this - to make it easy to clean.

0:20:40 > 0:20:43- I can take it out there - and give it a good scrub.

0:20:43 > 0:20:45- It's huge!

0:20:49 > 0:20:52- There's a concealed towel rail - under there.

0:20:53 > 0:20:55- In the pillar?

0:20:55 > 0:20:56- In the pillar?- - Yes.

0:20:58 > 0:20:59- Yes, I see.

0:21:06 > 0:21:09- The kitchen - was built by a local craftsman...

0:21:10 > 0:21:12- ..but Hefin chose all the furniture.

0:21:21 > 0:21:25- Let's climb this new staircase, - to the first floor.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28- There were no stairs here, - originally.

0:21:28 > 0:21:31- There was a door here, - leading to the field.

0:21:32 > 0:21:35- This is now a perfect display area.

0:21:35 > 0:21:41- There are traces of the original - purpose of the building here, too.

0:21:41 > 0:21:44- Hefin has kept some pieces of wood.

0:21:45 > 0:21:47- The axle went up there.

0:21:48 > 0:21:50- This is now the guest bedroom.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53- There's a bathroom here.

0:21:53 > 0:21:58- Down here is the master bedroom, - with its en suite shower room.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01- This is a French-style bed.

0:22:02 > 0:22:04- The wardrobes are over here.

0:22:04 > 0:22:07- Everything is tucked away neatly, - in here.

0:22:07 > 0:22:09- This is an ingenious use of space.

0:22:10 > 0:22:14- I don't think - I've seen a more compact en suite!

0:22:14 > 0:22:17- There's a shower, a toilet - and a basin in here...

0:22:17 > 0:22:20- ..but it doesn't feel cramped.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22- That's amazing!

0:22:41 > 0:22:44- What do you plan to do up here, - on the third floor?

0:22:45 > 0:22:48- I use it purely as storage space, - at the moment.

0:22:48 > 0:22:50- I keep all my junk up here!

0:22:50 > 0:22:54- I hope to put a bathroom - and two more bedrooms up here.

0:22:54 > 0:22:56- You've done incredibly well...

0:22:57 > 0:23:00- ..to keep so much - of the mechanics of the mill.

0:23:00 > 0:23:03- That's what - makes this place special.

0:23:03 > 0:23:07- I wanted to preserve as much - of the mill's character as possible.

0:23:08 > 0:23:11- The real character of the mill - is up here.

0:23:28 > 0:23:31- Can you see a time - when you won't live here?

0:23:33 > 0:23:35- At the moment, I'd have to say no.

0:23:35 > 0:23:37- This will be my home.
