0:09:52 > 0:09:55- I knew a young, strong lad - was holding the rope.

0:09:55 > 0:09:59- It's like the master - and the apprentice.

0:10:01 > 0:10:05- I've never been a master and - I wouldn't call you an apprentice.

0:10:14 > 0:10:18- Looking at what I know - about your life story...

0:10:46 > 0:10:49- It's been a life - that's full of adventure...

0:10:50 > 0:10:52- ..but I've also enjoyed - a lot of luck.

0:10:57 > 0:10:58- Absolutely.

0:10:58 > 0:11:03- Some things are dangerous and - you need to have luck on your side.

0:11:11 > 0:11:13- Al Alvarez has written a book...

0:11:14 > 0:11:17- ..called Feeding The Rat.

0:11:24 > 0:11:27- The only thing - which could satisfy this rat...

0:11:27 > 0:11:31- ..was feeding it with a big dose - of fear or adrenaline.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34- This climber had to go out - and climb something.

0:11:35 > 0:11:40- When he'd completed a climb, the rat - would be satisfied for a while...

0:11:40 > 0:11:44- ..but it would soon wake up - and demand more adrenaline.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47- I'm sure that rat - lives within me too.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50- I've always had that urge - to do something else.

0:11:51 > 0:11:54- I climbed the Eiger - with some friends in 1970.

0:11:55 > 0:11:58- After that, - I did a lot of solo climbing.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47- The ascent went quite well...

0:12:47 > 0:12:52- ..until I reached half way - and I came across The Ice Bulge.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56- I looked at it and I couldn't see - a way to climb it.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59- I thought - it was beyond my capabilities.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04- When those thoughts - were going through my head...

0:13:06 > 0:13:09- ..a serene calmness washed over me.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13- I knew I could climb - this 20 foot piece of ice.

0:13:13 > 0:13:17- I still can't explain - how I climbed it.

0:13:22 > 0:13:28- How did it feel to defeat that - north face and reach the summit?

0:13:29 > 0:13:31- It was a wonderful feeling.

0:13:31 > 0:13:35- I was lucky enough to do it - without any accidents...

0:13:35 > 0:13:39- ..and to have reasonably - good weather for the ascent.

0:13:39 > 0:13:42- I'd dreamed about that climb - for years.

0:13:43 > 0:13:48- I thought I'd be a totally happy man - once I'd reached the summit...

0:13:48 > 0:13:51- ..and I'd never want to attempt - another ascent.

0:13:53 > 0:13:57- But a couple of days after - I'd come back down to the valley...

0:13:57 > 0:13:59- ..I felt really low.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03- I'd dreamed about that climb - for so long...

0:14:03 > 0:14:06- ..but I was left - with an empty feeling.
