0:03:47 > 0:03:51- I don't know anyone, - in any choir I've conducted...

0:03:53 > 0:03:57- His brother, Uncle Willy, - was the choir's conductor.

0:03:58 > 0:04:03- I sang with the choir but I was more - interested in playing the viola.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06- I felt I was too good - to sing in a choir...

0:04:06 > 0:04:10- ..but I've regretted not taking - it more seriously ever since.

0:04:13 > 0:04:17- ..choral singing was the most - important thing in the world.

0:05:27 > 0:05:31- Was she as pretty as she was - in school? Was she prettier?

0:05:31 > 0:05:36- There was so much excitement - and tension as I crossed the bridge.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35- I had the performing bug. - It was exciting.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45- Bangor was my first choice, - to study Welsh.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49- The headmaster asked me, - "What's this?"

0:06:57 > 0:06:59- It changed the course of my life.

0:07:04 > 0:07:09- I ended up going to Hull University - because I didn't play the piano.

0:07:12 > 0:07:16- You needed Grade 8 piano - for most university music courses.

0:07:16 > 0:07:21- I hadn't even reached Grade 1. - I hadn't had any piano lessons.

0:07:24 > 0:07:31- ..because I didn't need any - piano qualifications to study there.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34- I went as far away - as I could from home...

0:07:35 > 0:07:38- ..and ended up - in this unfamiliar city.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44- People spoke English - with a strange accent.

0:07:47 > 0:07:51- I was determined to stay - until the end of the first term...

0:07:54 > 0:07:58- I remember coming home - on the train to Bangor.

0:08:02 > 0:08:07- After being away from home - for three whole months...

0:08:07 > 0:08:10- ..seeing this bridge - lifted my spirits instantly.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15- That happened every time - I returned home from university.

0:08:15 > 0:08:19- I'd come home, see the bridge - and I knew I was almost home.

0:08:43 > 0:08:48- Even though she's no longer with us, - I'm still drawn to the place.

0:09:57 > 0:10:02- As a child, I was thin and frail. - I hated food.

0:10:40 > 0:10:44- Most of the time, we headed - for the Chinese restaurant.

0:14:27 > 0:14:31- ..in producing a Sunday morning show - called Cywair...

0:14:32 > 0:14:35- ..a popular classical music - programme...

0:14:35 > 0:14:37- ..presented by Frank Lincoln.

0:14:37 > 0:14:40- Frank wanted a three-month break.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43- Meirion also asked me - if I wanted to present it.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47- I wasn't sure about presenting...

0:14:47 > 0:14:50- ..because I hated - the quality of my voice...

0:14:51 > 0:14:55- ..but it was only for three months, - so it would soon be over.

0:14:57 > 0:15:02- I produced and presented Cywair - for 17 years!

0:15:02 > 0:15:07- I expected a harsh reaction from - the people listening to my voice...

0:15:07 > 0:15:09- ..but the exact opposite happened.

0:15:10 > 0:15:14- People starting talking - about the sexy voice they'd heard...

0:15:14 > 0:15:16- ..the sexiest voice on Radio Cymru.

0:15:16 > 0:15:18- Sexy? Goodness me!

0:15:18 > 0:15:21- People then thought - I was putting it on...

0:15:21 > 0:15:26- ..and once you've created a certain - image, you have to continue...

0:15:26 > 0:15:30- ..especially when people - are writing in every week.

0:15:34 > 0:15:37- At the time, people didn't know - what I looked like.

0:15:37 > 0:15:42- I used to present radio shows - from the National Eisteddfod.

0:15:42 > 0:15:46- People would walk past and say, - "Oh, you're Alwyn Humphreys."

0:15:53 > 0:15:55- I thought to myself, - "I'm none of them!"

0:16:00 > 0:16:03- The picture she had of me - was very different.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07- I don't think she enjoyed - listening to me after that!

0:19:02 > 0:19:07- ..which lasted for 45 minutes in - the deacons room in a nearby chapel.

0:19:08 > 0:19:12- I heard the sound - of men walking into the vestry.

0:19:12 > 0:19:14- It was rehearsal night.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18- The chairman put two pieces of music - in my hand.

0:19:18 > 0:19:23- "Now," he said, "You will go into - the vestry and conduct the choir."

0:19:23 > 0:19:25- I'd never seen them before.

0:19:25 > 0:19:27- I thought, "This is unfair."

0:19:28 > 0:19:32- You always want to prepare - before something like that.

0:19:33 > 0:19:35- After half an hour, - the chairman stood up.

0:20:10 > 0:20:15- I said, "Thanks, but no, thanks. - I'm happy with my choir."

0:20:16 > 0:20:20- But they told me I could choose - which songs the choir would sing.

0:20:20 > 0:20:25- I came back - and I stayed for 25 years.

0:20:33 > 0:20:37- I become a different person - when I'm standing on the podium.

0:23:14 > 0:23:19- One of the main advantages I've had - in life is not having an ambition.
