0:00:02 > 0:00:04We are in Kingston upon Thames today,

0:00:04 > 0:00:08just ten miles southwest of Charing Cross Station.

0:00:08 > 0:00:12But there is something very funny going on in this town.

0:00:12 > 0:00:16Either they've got a drunken telephone engineer,

0:00:16 > 0:00:19or we're all going to find our phones are out of order,

0:00:19 > 0:00:22or we're going to press Button B.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25I don't know. But let's go bargain hunting, eh?

0:00:52 > 0:00:55It's here at the Kingston Antiques Centre

0:00:55 > 0:00:57that our teams are going to be let loose

0:00:57 > 0:01:00with their £300 to find three items in an hour.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03So let's have a sneaky beak at what's coming up.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07The Reds realise there is only one direction that matters.

0:01:07 > 0:01:11It's got a purpose, but is it pointing to a profit? I don't know.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15And the Blues know exactly what they want.

0:01:15 > 0:01:16Are we in the game...

0:01:16 > 0:01:20- for fun? Or are we in the game to win it?- To win it.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23But who will be today's winner at auction?

0:01:23 > 0:01:25AUCTIONEER MUMBLES

0:01:27 > 0:01:29Come on!

0:01:29 > 0:01:31Yes! You got it.

0:01:31 > 0:01:32Let's meet the teams.

0:01:34 > 0:01:39On Bargain Hunt today, we have a team of work colleagues -

0:01:39 > 0:01:41Patty and Ben.

0:01:41 > 0:01:45And a team of friends for the Blues - Lana and Charlotta.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48- Hello, everyone. - ALL: Hello, Tim!- Hi, hi.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50Now, listen, Patty, how long have you known Ben for?

0:01:50 > 0:01:52- Ooh, about five years.- Have you?

0:01:52 > 0:01:55- Yes, he was a student before he worked with us.- What do you do?

0:01:55 > 0:01:57We are both radiographers.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00- How long have you been doing this radiography?- 33 years.- 33 years?

0:02:00 > 0:02:03- Yes.- Were you one of the youngest radiographers when you got your job?

0:02:03 > 0:02:07- Yes, of course. - In the UK, or in the world maybe.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10- What do you like to collect, Patty? - At the moment, it's glasses.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13- How many pairs have you got? - Oh, about 300 or so.- You haven't!

0:02:13 > 0:02:16- I haven't counted them lately.- Would you call yourself obsessed at all?

0:02:16 > 0:02:19- Yeah, a bit.- A bit?- I've got to stop. - Have you?- Yes, of course.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22Now, Ben, when you're not working as a radiographer,

0:02:22 > 0:02:23what do you get up to?

0:02:23 > 0:02:27All kinds... all sports, badminton, a bit of go-karting.

0:02:27 > 0:02:31- I'm starting to get into triathlons. - Are you?

0:02:31 > 0:02:33I consider myself a bit of a triathlete.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35And for the triathlon, you have to run a bit,

0:02:35 > 0:02:38you have to swim a bit and you have to bike a bit, don't you?

0:02:38 > 0:02:41- Swim, cycle, run.- Yeah. How are you getting on with it?

0:02:41 > 0:02:43Usually near the bottom.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45- But I am trying hard.- Well, there you go. And it's good fun, though?

0:02:45 > 0:02:48- Yeah.- It gets you out and about and keeps you out of mischief.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50- Absolutely. - What do you like to collect, Ben?

0:02:50 > 0:02:55I'm not as an avid collector as Patty, but I like military things.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58I've got a few model racing cars at home as well.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00But they've got to be in mint condition.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02- Mint?- Oh, yes, in the box.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04Well, that is a very good principle actually with those things.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06Don't touch it if it isn't mint.

0:03:06 > 0:03:08So what are you two going to be buying today between you two?

0:03:08 > 0:03:11- We'd both like to get something scientific.- Yeah.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13- Cos of our background. - Well, lovely, and very good luck.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15Lovely to see you.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19Now, Lana, how far back do you go with your future mother-in-law?

0:03:19 > 0:03:22- 12 years.- And Lana calls you Mama?

0:03:22 > 0:03:24Yeah. My children call me Mama.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28So sweet. Lana, what do you do for a living, darling?

0:03:28 > 0:03:30Currently deputy manager for a care home

0:03:30 > 0:03:33supporting people with autism and learning disabilities.

0:03:33 > 0:03:34Right.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37Soon to be a behavioural specialist across the company.

0:03:37 > 0:03:42- What do you do in that line of work? - Well, you...

0:03:42 > 0:03:46Take a person and if they've got some behavioural issues

0:03:46 > 0:03:48or areas that might help improve their lives,

0:03:48 > 0:03:52I would analyse the behaviours and then try to put

0:03:52 > 0:03:55an intervention in place to make their lives better, really.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58- Charlotta, you come from the Low Countries.- Yes, I'm a Dutch girl.

0:03:58 > 0:04:02- You're a Dutch girl?- Yep.- What do you do to keep yourself busy?

0:04:02 > 0:04:05I'm a shopkeeper during the day.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07- Yes.- And as a hobby, I play poker.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11- Do you?- I am a poker player, yes.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14- Have you got that deadpan face, then?- OK, yes, yes.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16- So you sit there with...- Yeah!

0:04:16 > 0:04:18You sit there with a flush and you don't get pink.

0:04:18 > 0:04:19No, no, no.

0:04:19 > 0:04:23- Charlotta, you're not a big gambler, are you?- No, not really.

0:04:23 > 0:04:24What do you mean "really"?

0:04:25 > 0:04:28- A game costs £10. - Only £10 a game?- Yeah.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31But you have got experience in the antiques business, haven't you?

0:04:31 > 0:04:33- A bit, yes.- What do you mean a bit?

0:04:33 > 0:04:36- I used to have a table in Portobello Road.- Well, there you are.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39- She's a Portobello Road dealer. My gosh.- I'm a market girl.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42You are a market girl, so you know how to drive a hard bargain.

0:04:42 > 0:04:43Absolutely.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46What sort of things did you sell in your time at Portobello?

0:04:46 > 0:04:47Silver.

0:04:47 > 0:04:49Are you going to be going for silver today?

0:04:49 > 0:04:53- I would love to buy some silver. Maybe some Dutch silver.- Yes.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55And you're going to guide Lana through the minefield

0:04:55 > 0:04:56that is antiques?

0:04:56 > 0:04:58- Yes.- That's the one, yeah. - Is that true?

0:04:58 > 0:05:00And of course, you're going to have your expert.

0:05:00 > 0:05:04Anyway, now the money moment. £300 a piece. There you go - £300.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07You know the rules. Your experts await, and off you go!

0:05:07 > 0:05:10And very, very good luck.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12Mm... Poker player, eh?

0:05:14 > 0:05:16Now, let's meet our experts.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19Ever-patient Kate Bliss will be assisting the Reds.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24And David Harper will be getting his teeth stuck

0:05:24 > 0:05:25into finding bargains for the Blues.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33Patty and Ben, you're going to love this antique centre.

0:05:33 > 0:05:35Any ideas what you might be looking for?

0:05:35 > 0:05:38- Something scientific? We're both in the...- Practical.- Yeah.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40Practical stuff.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42Ooh, I think this is going to sound a bit exotic.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45- We've got Lana and Charlotta. - Charlotta, perfect. Yes.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48I say, very glamorous. What are we going to be looking for, Charlotta?

0:05:48 > 0:05:50I would like a little bit of silver

0:05:50 > 0:05:52and maybe a bit of jewellery with a little bit of glam.

0:05:52 > 0:05:57- I want my furniture.- Furniture? Hm. - Yep. The bigger the better.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00- Lana, do we do glam?- We do do glam. - Do we?- Yeah.- Do we do bling?

0:06:00 > 0:06:01We do bling.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04Right, teams, your 60 minutes starts now!

0:06:04 > 0:06:06BELL DINGS

0:06:06 > 0:06:08- Let's go for it!- Let's go.

0:06:08 > 0:06:10Let's go.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13- Go on and hide me. - It says no ducks allowed. Oh, dear.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18- Test me. I love it. - OK, how old is he?- Oh!

0:06:20 > 0:06:22Hang on a minute - why are you drawn to that?

0:06:22 > 0:06:24Well, I have no men.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27Well, he's only 85 quid, not bad for a man, is he?

0:06:27 > 0:06:29Yeah, he's very cheap, very cheap, yeah.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31Oh, I don't know. He looks ARMLESS to me.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35- Quite elegant.- It's very ladylike, isn't it?- Yes, it's quite low.- Yeah.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37Low chair, low price maybe, Kate.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40It might be a little nursing chair cos often they were very low.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44It's not really for sitting on for any length of time,

0:06:44 > 0:06:46so you've got to sort of take that into account

0:06:46 > 0:06:48- when you're thinking about the price.- Hm.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51So at auction, I would probably put an estimate in the current

0:06:51 > 0:06:54market of sort of £30-50.

0:06:54 > 0:06:56Something like that, maybe a little bit less, even.

0:06:56 > 0:06:59That's a retail price, that's a fair retail price,

0:06:59 > 0:07:02but it's just about how commercial it might be at the auction.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05Yeah. OK, well we will move on and see what else we have.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08We can always come back to it. Let's keep going.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11You can indeed, Reds. There is still plenty to see.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14Meanwhile, the Blues are looking at a silver bar brooch

0:07:14 > 0:07:15priced up at £18.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19- Has it got a meaning at all, you think?- Yeah, I think so.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21Looks Victorian, doesn't it? It's very Victorian in its shape.

0:07:21 > 0:07:23- Yeah.- And is it silver?

0:07:25 > 0:07:29- Well, it's got markings.- OK, what do they say?- It's got a little flower.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32- If you look at it that way... - OK.- What is it now?

0:07:32 > 0:07:35- It's an anchor.- Right, and what does that mean, Charlotta?- Birmingham.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38Well done! Fantastic. What a dream team.

0:07:38 > 0:07:43- OK, so date is...circa 1900s, so very late.- Yeah.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46- Oh, there you go, it says 1896. - Shall we think about it?

0:07:46 > 0:07:49- Let's think about it.- Do you want to think? That's fine.

0:07:49 > 0:07:50It's a good start.

0:07:50 > 0:07:54On the back burner it goes. So, from one cabinet to another.

0:07:54 > 0:07:55What have the Reds spotted now?

0:07:55 > 0:07:57- What is that at the front there, Kate?- I don't know.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00- It might be compass, maybe.- Is that a compass? Ben likes compasses.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03Do you? Could we have a little look in here, please?

0:08:03 > 0:08:05There's all sorts of things. We've got medals...

0:08:05 > 0:08:09We've got what looks like a little Dinky Toy in the back there.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11Lovely, thanks Matthew.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15- So, let's have a little look. - That one's got a case.- Yes.

0:08:15 > 0:08:16Does it work?

0:08:16 > 0:08:18Do you know what date it would be?

0:08:18 > 0:08:21- Well, it certainly looks like World War II to me.- £125.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23Is that commercial, do you think?

0:08:23 > 0:08:25They are collectible.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28It was probably a standard-issue one,

0:08:28 > 0:08:30so I don't think it's particularly rare.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33It got a purpose, but is it pointing to a profit?

0:08:33 > 0:08:35125 is the price.

0:08:35 > 0:08:39Why don't we leave it to Matthew to see what the best price would be.

0:08:39 > 0:08:40That would be great.

0:08:40 > 0:08:42Thank you very much.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44So, as the Reds wait on a price,

0:08:44 > 0:08:46David is trying to impress the Blues.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50- It's a little ebony box.- Yeah. - So, it's a piece of tree.- Yeah.

0:08:50 > 0:08:55See the nice little thread there? All in wood. Beautifully turned.

0:08:55 > 0:09:00Great colour. Then, on the top, we have it mounted in silver.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03Hallmarked in Birmingham in 1919.

0:09:03 > 0:09:09That is as immaculate as it was the day it was made.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11It just needs a little bit of polish on there.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13- Yeah, that's not a big deal. - And engrave it.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16I think that is a cracking little object.

0:09:16 > 0:09:17What's it worth?

0:09:18 > 0:09:22- 15? - But will they get it for that price?

0:09:22 > 0:09:24The Reds are still waiting for prices on their items.

0:09:24 > 0:09:26Here is Matthew.

0:09:26 > 0:09:27I've spoken to the dealer.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30- They are happy to do £80 on the compass for you.- Right.

0:09:30 > 0:09:33And the lady with the chair would do £50.

0:09:33 > 0:09:37- Oh, that's great. All right, well, let's keep that in mind.- All right.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39- Lovely, thanks, Matthew. - Very lovely. Thank you.

0:09:39 > 0:09:40- Shall we go this way?- Yes.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43- Now, what can they get the ebony box for?- Let's bring in the lovely Vera.

0:09:43 > 0:09:44Yeah.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47- Hi, Vera.- Hello.

0:09:47 > 0:09:48I think you know where this is going.

0:09:48 > 0:09:53- Can that be eight pounds? - No, but it could be 12.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55Can it be ten?

0:09:57 > 0:09:59- Go on, then.- Are you happy at ten?

0:09:59 > 0:10:03I think that's a very good deal that she did. A very good deal.

0:10:03 > 0:10:07There is profit in that at ten. Vera, thank you very much indeed.

0:10:07 > 0:10:10And with that, the Blues bought their first item. Well done.

0:10:12 > 0:10:16I'm liking this chair, Kate. More than the previous chair we saw.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19- Oh, really?- It's more practical. - Mm-hm.- Also quite decorative.

0:10:19 > 0:10:21It looks in reasonable condition.

0:10:21 > 0:10:24- I prefer that as well to the other one.- Do you?

0:10:24 > 0:10:25Now, this is really interesting

0:10:25 > 0:10:29because I think the earlier chair is very traditional, very Edwardian.

0:10:29 > 0:10:31- This is '30s.- Yeah.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34Quite Art Deco in shape with that tall back.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37This one is oak with what's known as a bergere back,

0:10:37 > 0:10:40which is the word for that cane work.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43I'm just going to jump in there and have a closer look.

0:10:43 > 0:10:47So this is very '30s with that carved little piece here.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50- It almost looks like a sunburst, kind of.- Yes, it is. It's...

0:10:50 > 0:10:53Let's lift the cushion up, cos this is important

0:10:53 > 0:10:54what the bottom is like.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57So, you've got a solid seat there which I'm pretty sure

0:10:57 > 0:10:58has been replaced.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01I think originally the seat would have been bergere as well,

0:11:01 > 0:11:02quite possibly.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05Now, the other thing to take into consideration is the cushion.

0:11:05 > 0:11:08The thing about the cushion is you've got to be careful that

0:11:08 > 0:11:10it's not foam-filled

0:11:10 > 0:11:13because a lot of auction houses will not sell anything

0:11:13 > 0:11:16that is foam-filled because it doesn't comply

0:11:16 > 0:11:18with modern fire regulations.

0:11:18 > 0:11:20They can't legally sell it.

0:11:20 > 0:11:22The good news is about this one is

0:11:22 > 0:11:25- you can feel that it's actually full of springs.- Oh, great.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27You haven't got foam in there.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29So, that's good news.

0:11:29 > 0:11:33Now, the question is - what somebody would pay for this.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37- The ticket price is 58. Beech-framed they say.- Beech?

0:11:37 > 0:11:40- It does look like oak, doesn't it? - It could well be beech.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43- That looks like oak to me. - I would bid on this chair.

0:11:43 > 0:11:46I probably wouldn't bid, myself, on the previous chair.

0:11:46 > 0:11:48We probably need to go and get Matthew, then.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50Whilst the Reds consider the bergere chair,

0:11:50 > 0:11:55the Blues are also honing in on yet more four-legged items.

0:11:55 > 0:11:56Wow.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59- What do you think of those chairs? - I think they're lovely.- Nice.

0:11:59 > 0:12:00They're really nice.

0:12:00 > 0:12:03I like the left one very much because it is a clear one.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06- The other one looks slightly greyish.- OK.

0:12:06 > 0:12:08A real design icon, I think, that chair, isn't it?

0:12:08 > 0:12:12It's the Ghost Chair designed by Philippe Starck.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14So it's quite a well-known brand, well-known name,

0:12:14 > 0:12:17- well-known designer. - What sort of period are we?

0:12:17 > 0:12:18Oh, gosh, very modern.

0:12:18 > 0:12:20- I mean, late...- '50s, '60s, '70s?

0:12:20 > 0:12:23No, no, no, absolutely late 20th century.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25- Oh, right.- Yeah, but absolutely cool.

0:12:25 > 0:12:28I would love to go for that if you are in agreement.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31So at least if it collapses we don't to actually get hurt.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34Yeah, then we go home quickly and leave her alone here. Yeah.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37- Yeah.- How does that feel? - Game of chess, anyone?

0:12:37 > 0:12:39HE CHUCKLES

0:12:39 > 0:12:42- Does that feel good?- Feels good. - Very good. OK.

0:12:42 > 0:12:44So, pick it up, have a look on the underside,

0:12:44 > 0:12:46make sure there is no damage or repairs.

0:12:46 > 0:12:51- And this should be a mark there, Lana, as well. Turn it around.- Ugh.

0:12:51 > 0:12:55- That's it.- What do I do?- And on the back of the chair... Just here.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58There we are. Isn't that just lovely?

0:12:58 > 0:13:03- Yeah, a few scratches. It looks a bit dirty, but nice.- Come on, then.

0:13:03 > 0:13:07- Let's have a team discussion.- Yeah. - OK, time is really...

0:13:07 > 0:13:08- I've got a price in my mind.- OK.

0:13:08 > 0:13:12- What is that? What is the price? - 35, £40.

0:13:12 > 0:13:15- Stay there.- Yeah.- Talk about it. I'll have a word with somebody.

0:13:15 > 0:13:16Thank you so much.

0:13:16 > 0:13:18So whilst David heads off to negotiate

0:13:18 > 0:13:21on the asking price of £65, it's back to the Reds.

0:13:21 > 0:13:23But they haven't moved.

0:13:23 > 0:13:25What do you think of this table?

0:13:25 > 0:13:28I like it. It's nicely turned and everything.

0:13:28 > 0:13:32But, again, it it's dark, dark wood, isn't it?

0:13:32 > 0:13:35It's for a certain kind of household which doesn't exist anymore.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38Well, Victorian pieces have gone down in price.

0:13:38 > 0:13:42Generally speaking, that's true. But it's a lovely decorative piece.

0:13:42 > 0:13:45It's quite sought after by an interior designer

0:13:45 > 0:13:48who might be looking for something a bit more interesting.

0:13:48 > 0:13:52It's all in quite good order and it's not too bad on price.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55- It's OK on the price, isn't it? - Have a little look, Patty.

0:13:55 > 0:13:57- What does it say?- It's 135.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59Now, I wouldn't want to pay 135.

0:13:59 > 0:14:06At auction, it might make anything from £70-100.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09So what do you think of the two? What you think maximum for the two? 150?

0:14:09 > 0:14:11You think that would be...?

0:14:11 > 0:14:15I think we need to talk to Matt. See what he can do for us. Matthew!

0:14:15 > 0:14:17And is if by magic, Matthew appears.

0:14:17 > 0:14:19Oh, hi, there. Thanks ever so much.

0:14:19 > 0:14:25Matthew, we really like this chair. You've got it priced at 58.

0:14:25 > 0:14:28We were wondering what the best would be on that.

0:14:28 > 0:14:32But also, if we took the games table as well, what you could do.

0:14:32 > 0:14:33OK.

0:14:33 > 0:14:36So the Reds are awaiting some furniture prices.

0:14:36 > 0:14:38What about the Blues and their furniture?

0:14:38 > 0:14:41Right, OK, situation is that in an antiques centre,

0:14:41 > 0:14:43- so they're not all here, the dealers.- OK.

0:14:43 > 0:14:45They are making a call to see what the best price is.

0:14:45 > 0:14:48- While the phone call is being made, we need to look and scout.- OK.

0:14:48 > 0:14:50So, turn around, there is a cabinet.

0:14:50 > 0:14:52Look and scout in that cabinet.

0:14:52 > 0:14:57With both teams waiting on price news, I'm in a reflective mood.

0:14:57 > 0:15:00The peculiar thing about this business is that when you get up in

0:15:00 > 0:15:06the morning, you have no idea what you might find that particular day.

0:15:06 > 0:15:10Well, today, I found these two.

0:15:11 > 0:15:15On the face of it, they're incredibly spangley, aren't they?

0:15:15 > 0:15:19That's because they are both made of solid silver.

0:15:19 > 0:15:21This silver has been nicely cleaned.

0:15:21 > 0:15:25When I first saw them, I thought, "What a lovely pair of frames."

0:15:25 > 0:15:28But if I put them side-by-side,

0:15:28 > 0:15:33the one on this side has got a beaded curved pediment to it.

0:15:33 > 0:15:36And the one on this one has got what is called

0:15:36 > 0:15:39a swan-neck pediment to it.

0:15:39 > 0:15:43The swan neck flanks the mask of an angel,

0:15:43 > 0:15:47and then running down the sides of the frame, there are two niches -

0:15:47 > 0:15:53each in the form of an oval shell containing a couple of saints.

0:15:53 > 0:15:58If we look at the other frame, you can see it follows the same theme.

0:15:58 > 0:16:01The difference in the pediment that I pointed out,

0:16:01 > 0:16:04and then we have a saint - probably St Peter -

0:16:04 > 0:16:07standing in the middle with a couple of draped columns

0:16:07 > 0:16:09either side of him.

0:16:09 > 0:16:14Here, the sides are entirely made up of beading and foliage.

0:16:14 > 0:16:18Most silver is marked, and indeed these pieces are marked.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20Over here, we've got

0:16:20 > 0:16:25a very badly struck mark which seems to be a monarch's mug shot.

0:16:25 > 0:16:29Over here, there's an oddball mark that has two Xs

0:16:29 > 0:16:31and another device next to it.

0:16:31 > 0:16:36Frankly, to decipher these marks is quite beyond me.

0:16:36 > 0:16:41But I know that the quality of the manufacture in these two

0:16:41 > 0:16:43silver frames is very high.

0:16:43 > 0:16:46You have to form the figures of the saints,

0:16:46 > 0:16:50you have to give the silver this very rich texture,

0:16:50 > 0:16:54and you do that by hitting a small blunt instrument

0:16:54 > 0:16:59against these in between services, which is called matting,

0:16:59 > 0:17:01and you do that not once, not twice,

0:17:01 > 0:17:04but several hundred thousand times

0:17:04 > 0:17:07over the surface of the entire piece,

0:17:07 > 0:17:10which gives it this textured look.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12So, when were they made?

0:17:12 > 0:17:14And where were they made?

0:17:14 > 0:17:19Well, my best guess would be that these frames weren't made

0:17:19 > 0:17:21in Europe at all.

0:17:21 > 0:17:25I think they were made by a colonial silversmith in one

0:17:25 > 0:17:30of the Spanish or Portuguese territories in South America.

0:17:30 > 0:17:31In the 17th century,

0:17:31 > 0:17:37the Spanish were removing vast amounts of silver in South America.

0:17:37 > 0:17:41And, it's quite likely that these two frames were made there

0:17:41 > 0:17:44at that time and then brought back to Europe.

0:17:44 > 0:17:49There is a risk factor involved in acquiring silver of this type -

0:17:49 > 0:17:52if you are wrong and it's a late 19th-century reproduction

0:17:52 > 0:17:57and it was simply churned out in some quantity in Holland, say,

0:17:57 > 0:18:03the value of these two frames might only be as much as £300 or £400.

0:18:03 > 0:18:08If you are right, though, and they were made in Columbia, or Peru,

0:18:08 > 0:18:13or Brazil in the 17th, early 18th century, you would have

0:18:13 > 0:18:18a pair of frames that could be worth as much as £1,500 to £2,000.

0:18:19 > 0:18:23What was the asking price? £380 for the two.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26Do you fancy a punt? I think yes, don't you?

0:18:28 > 0:18:31Back to the shopping, and with just the one purchase made

0:18:31 > 0:18:35so far by the Blues, both teams are still waiting for prices.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38Here we are, here we are. Get ready. Brace yourselves.

0:18:38 > 0:18:42- They will do 35 on the chair. - 35?- I think that's fantastic.

0:18:42 > 0:18:45- Thank you very much. Yes.- Happy? - Yes, very happy.- Lovely.

0:18:45 > 0:18:47- Tell them it's sold. - Thank you so much.- Brilliant.

0:18:47 > 0:18:49Thank you for doing that.

0:18:49 > 0:18:51Well done, Blues. That's your second purchase made.

0:18:51 > 0:18:55Wasting no time, the Reds have moved up a floor as news on the chair

0:18:55 > 0:18:57and table finally arrives.

0:18:57 > 0:19:00- Great, now you are in charge of upstairs, aren't you?- Yeah.

0:19:00 > 0:19:02First of all, any news from Matthew?

0:19:02 > 0:19:03We asked him about a couple of prices.

0:19:03 > 0:19:09That's right, now he's gone down to 65 on the table, 45 on the chair.

0:19:09 > 0:19:13The table was priced at 135, so that's a fantastic discount.

0:19:13 > 0:19:14Yeah, very generous.

0:19:14 > 0:19:19The chair was priced at 58, so that's come down to 45.

0:19:19 > 0:19:23So, altogether we are looking at, what, 110 for the two items.

0:19:23 > 0:19:26- Go for it, definitely.- What do you think, Patty?- Definitely!

0:19:26 > 0:19:30- Definitely.- I'm sold. I'm sold. - Good.- Let's do it.

0:19:30 > 0:19:33That's a pretty firm "Yes, please," I think.

0:19:33 > 0:19:37But we still need a third item and time is ticking, literally in here.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40We have about 15 minutes which isn't long.

0:19:40 > 0:19:42Could we also have a look

0:19:42 > 0:19:44- at the telescope? - CLOCKS CHIME

0:19:44 > 0:19:47Gosh, all the clocks are working in here, aren't they?

0:19:47 > 0:19:50- They've all struck at the same hour.- Let's have a look at it.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53Lovely, thank you very much. Thank you, Marion.

0:19:53 > 0:19:56So, let's leave the Reds looking at the telescope.

0:19:56 > 0:20:00Meanwhile, the Blues have found yet more furniture.

0:20:00 > 0:20:04- OK, tell us why you like that. - I don't know. I just like the style.

0:20:04 > 0:20:06But then, I guess it's quite particular.

0:20:06 > 0:20:08Someone is going to have to like it in auction, aren't they?

0:20:08 > 0:20:11Yeah, but you know, it is very much the market, isn't it?

0:20:11 > 0:20:14It's 1950s, looks like a melamine kind of top.

0:20:14 > 0:20:17I think it probably is.

0:20:17 > 0:20:20- Oh, look it's a cocktail cabinet! - Nice, that's why I like it.

0:20:20 > 0:20:22Is it going to make money, though? That's the thing.

0:20:22 > 0:20:24I don't think it is. I like it, but...

0:20:24 > 0:20:27I think it's 100-150 in auction.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30- However, I'd like to see it in a 20th-century sale.- Forget it.

0:20:30 > 0:20:32Keep it in mind because time is running out.

0:20:32 > 0:20:35If we went out of time, we're going to have to dash an offer of 150

0:20:35 > 0:20:36and try to get it.

0:20:36 > 0:20:39- Exactly. Good thinking. - Come on, then, but well spotted.

0:20:39 > 0:20:41So, the Blues are leaving the sideboard to one side

0:20:41 > 0:20:44and are the Reds still focused on the telescope?

0:20:44 > 0:20:49- What do we have here? World War II telescope.- £85.- Canadian.

0:20:49 > 0:20:53It's probably three draw, so it pulls out like so.

0:20:53 > 0:20:55- And it pulls out here.- Oh.

0:20:55 > 0:20:57SHE GASPS Wow.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00Now, this would be... Oh, look, now this is the good bit.

0:21:00 > 0:21:05Look. We've got Telescope Signalling REL Canada.

0:21:08 > 0:21:11- I mean, that has to be...- 1942. - I like it.

0:21:13 > 0:21:15I think 85 is a bit too much.

0:21:15 > 0:21:18I'm thinking, really, it could be £20-30 at auction.

0:21:18 > 0:21:22We've only got one more to buy. Oh, here is Marion.

0:21:22 > 0:21:24Hi, Marion. What news? Come on in.

0:21:24 > 0:21:28Well, I spoke in to the dealer and we can go down to 70.

0:21:28 > 0:21:31Very fairly priced for your antiques centre,

0:21:31 > 0:21:33but we've got to put them into an auction.

0:21:33 > 0:21:37Well, what about 65 on that. Will that help?

0:21:37 > 0:21:41Do you know what I think, you two? I think we've got about ten minutes.

0:21:41 > 0:21:42We've got two items.

0:21:42 > 0:21:45I think we should have another very quick look around here

0:21:45 > 0:21:47- and we can always come back to these.- Yep.

0:21:47 > 0:21:49- Is that all right, Marion? - Yeah, that'll be fine.

0:21:49 > 0:21:51- I'll put it back. - Thank you very much.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53This way, guys. On the double.

0:21:53 > 0:21:55So, the telescope is put on one side,

0:21:55 > 0:21:57but what have the Blues spotted now?

0:21:57 > 0:22:01- This.- Oh, do you like that? OK. What is it?

0:22:01 > 0:22:04- A box.- A box, yeah. - Sounds good to me, yes.

0:22:04 > 0:22:07Good colour, isn't it? Good colour.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10- Oh, look, those metal things with... how you call...hinges.- Hinges.

0:22:10 > 0:22:13Let's have a look at that. Let's have a look at this then, Charlotta.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16- Yeah.- So it's a little Victorian box.

0:22:16 > 0:22:17Could have been a tool box, storage box.

0:22:17 > 0:22:20So it's almost like an industrial-quality thing, isn't it?

0:22:20 > 0:22:24- Yeah, and lots and lots of handles. - Handles. Let's have a look.

0:22:24 > 0:22:26- Well, look at that.- Gosh, yes.

0:22:26 > 0:22:28This theme was made cheaply, but made to last for a very long time.

0:22:28 > 0:22:30- Yeah.- And it has.

0:22:30 > 0:22:34- So, well constructed, good colour. Time is running out.- Nice article.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37- Would you use that as a coffee table?- Yes. Nice.- Very nice.

0:22:37 > 0:22:41- OK, you two stay here. I'll go and get a price.- OK, great.- Thank you.

0:22:42 > 0:22:46Look, there's a Sputnik lamp. I was born the day Sputnik went up.

0:22:46 > 0:22:49- SHE LAUGHS - Were you?- Yes.

0:22:49 > 0:22:52So what date... When was that, Patty?

0:22:52 > 0:22:54Oh, well, actually it was the 4th of October, '57.

0:22:54 > 0:22:57325, Patty, is on that, a little bit out of our reach.

0:22:57 > 0:22:58Yeah, I think it is.

0:22:58 > 0:23:00That Sputnik type thing though over there.

0:23:00 > 0:23:02But, again, everything is too expensive.

0:23:02 > 0:23:04Right, you two. OK, here we go, right?

0:23:04 > 0:23:09- Two prices.- Yeah. - The French sideboard 245.- Right.

0:23:09 > 0:23:10Yeah, from 275.

0:23:10 > 0:23:15The pine box - 55 is the very best price.

0:23:15 > 0:23:18Ah, we were thinking 40, 45.

0:23:18 > 0:23:21It's not going to happen. It's 55 or nothing. Where are we?

0:23:21 > 0:23:23What have we got in reserve? The two pieces.

0:23:23 > 0:23:26Yeah. Well, our choice...

0:23:26 > 0:23:30We saw the brooch first, but are we in the game

0:23:30 > 0:23:32for fun or are we in the game to win it?

0:23:32 > 0:23:34- To win it.- Then we go for the brooch.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36But we don't know how much the brooch is.

0:23:36 > 0:23:37Hang on, we've got one minute.

0:23:37 > 0:23:40- Shall I get a price on it? Stay there.- Yes, please.- Thank you.

0:23:40 > 0:23:43Guys, we have got literally a minute left.

0:23:43 > 0:23:44We've got to make a decision.

0:23:44 > 0:23:47I like the telescope but you say it's too expensive,

0:23:47 > 0:23:48so shall we try again?

0:23:48 > 0:23:51I think we need Marion and I think we need to talk price.

0:23:51 > 0:23:53- Absolutely.- See if we can do any better.- OK.

0:23:53 > 0:23:55- Marion, are you about?- Yes.

0:23:55 > 0:23:57Great, Marion, come on in.

0:23:57 > 0:24:00We all really tight for time and we're struggling rather.

0:24:00 > 0:24:01We do like the telescope

0:24:01 > 0:24:03but I think it's a wee bit too expensive for us.

0:24:03 > 0:24:04Can we do anything else at all?

0:24:04 > 0:24:08Well, we've gone to 65. Let's do another five - 60.

0:24:08 > 0:24:10- OK.- All right?

0:24:10 > 0:24:12Could you do 55 just for us?

0:24:13 > 0:24:16- It's pushing it but I'll do it. REDS:- Thank you.

0:24:16 > 0:24:18- 55, happy?- Yes.

0:24:18 > 0:24:20Wonderful. Marion, thank you so much.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22- BOTH:- Thank you.

0:24:22 > 0:24:24- Basically, we're scuppered. - Yeah.- Right?

0:24:24 > 0:24:27- We have to buy something in the next 15 seconds.- Yeah.- OK.

0:24:27 > 0:24:29- You can buy the brooch for ten pounds.- Right.

0:24:29 > 0:24:35You can buy the French cabinet for 245 or the pine box for 55.

0:24:35 > 0:24:36What are we doing?

0:24:36 > 0:24:38- The brooch.- The brooch.

0:24:38 > 0:24:39- The brooch. - HE WHISTLES

0:24:39 > 0:24:41- Hallelujah.- Nice.

0:24:41 > 0:24:42BELL RINGS

0:24:42 > 0:24:45Wow, that was tight because those 60 minutes are up.

0:24:45 > 0:24:48Let's check out what the Red Team bought, eh?

0:24:48 > 0:24:52A 1930s framed nursing chair with bergere back was £45.

0:24:55 > 0:24:58They're gambling £65 on this early 20th-century mahogany

0:24:58 > 0:25:00inlaid games table.

0:25:01 > 0:25:04And finally, they spotted the Second World War

0:25:04 > 0:25:08brass telescope, which cost them £55.

0:25:08 > 0:25:10- So, was that great or was it great? - Yeah, great.- Very exciting.

0:25:10 > 0:25:13It was great. Now tell me, how much did you spend?

0:25:13 > 0:25:15- £165.- £165 is mature.

0:25:15 > 0:25:17- £135 of leftover lolly.- Yes.

0:25:17 > 0:25:19- Who's got that?- I have. - Have you? Well done.

0:25:19 > 0:25:21- There you go.- Very good, lovely.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24- Which is your favourite piece? - My favourite piece is the chair.

0:25:24 > 0:25:26- What about you, Ben? - Uh, probably the telescope.

0:25:26 > 0:25:29Telescope's a favourite. Is that going to bring the biggest profit?

0:25:29 > 0:25:31Um... I don't think so.

0:25:31 > 0:25:33- No.- I think...- You don't see a profit through that?

0:25:33 > 0:25:35Well, no, I do, but not the biggest profit.

0:25:35 > 0:25:36The biggest profit, fair enough.

0:25:36 > 0:25:38What is going to bring the biggest profit?

0:25:38 > 0:25:40- I think the chair. - Do you?- I think the chair.

0:25:40 > 0:25:42- You think the chair?- Yes.- OK, fine.

0:25:42 > 0:25:43Well, we'll find out in a minute.

0:25:43 > 0:25:46- Kate Bliss, here's a nice lump of money for you, darling.- It is.

0:25:46 > 0:25:48- Look at that. - And what are you going to do?

0:25:48 > 0:25:52I might go slightly down at the rustic route.

0:25:52 > 0:25:55Anyway, super-duper. Why don't we, right now, though,

0:25:55 > 0:25:57check out what the Blue Team bought, eh?

0:25:57 > 0:26:00A silver-mounted dressing table container was ten pounds.

0:26:00 > 0:26:06A Philippe Starck Louis Ghost chair cost a clear £35.

0:26:06 > 0:26:09And, finally, they're pinning their hopes on this silver bar brooch

0:26:09 > 0:26:11for ten pounds.

0:26:11 > 0:26:13- Well, that was fun, girls, wasn't it?- Yes indeed.

0:26:13 > 0:26:15Cor, Charlotta, you don't half know your silver.

0:26:15 > 0:26:17I love it, yes. I really like it. Yes.

0:26:17 > 0:26:19Excellent. Which is your favourite piece?

0:26:19 > 0:26:22- I think, out of the pieces, we bought a chair.- Yes.

0:26:22 > 0:26:24It is a Perspex...

0:26:24 > 0:26:26Yeah.

0:26:26 > 0:26:27Perspex chair, I love that.

0:26:27 > 0:26:29- You like that? It's your favourite? - Yes, yes.

0:26:29 > 0:26:31- Do you agree with that? - Yeah, I'd agree with that.

0:26:31 > 0:26:34- It's nice.- Which is going to bring the biggest profit?

0:26:34 > 0:26:36- Maybe the brooch.- Maybe the brooch.

0:26:36 > 0:26:38- Do you agree with that. - Yes, maybe the brooch.

0:26:38 > 0:26:40Because we went on the cheap today.

0:26:40 > 0:26:41- Did you?- Yeah. For the cheap, yeah.

0:26:41 > 0:26:43OK, well, how much did you spend in total?

0:26:43 > 0:26:45Uh, we've spent 55.

0:26:45 > 0:26:47On all three pieces?

0:26:47 > 0:26:49- Yeah.- Very good, isn't it? - This is a joke, isn't it?

0:26:49 > 0:26:50Did you really? £55?

0:26:50 > 0:26:53Yes, we went for the win, you see.

0:26:53 > 0:26:55OK. You've gone for the jugular, I'd say.

0:26:55 > 0:26:57- THEY LAUGH - OK. 55 is £245.

0:26:57 > 0:27:01I don't think I've ever had so much left over.

0:27:01 > 0:27:02- Like £245.- I know.

0:27:02 > 0:27:05- You're girls. I thought you'd go out there.- It's terrible.

0:27:05 > 0:27:07- Big spenders, yeah. - Big spenders, but not at all.

0:27:08 > 0:27:12Well, here we go. Our only hope for a clean sweep is David Harper.

0:27:12 > 0:27:15Big hope, oh, my gosh, but they're in it to win it,

0:27:15 > 0:27:17as they have said, and I think this is part of their tactic.

0:27:17 > 0:27:20- Yeah, well, fair enough.- It's all based on price with you two,

0:27:20 > 0:27:22- wasn't it?- Yeah, indeed. - It was, yeah.

0:27:22 > 0:27:24I'm going to try and buy something different.

0:27:24 > 0:27:26Yeah, and spend a lot on it cos you've got a lot to spend.

0:27:26 > 0:27:28- THEY LAUGH - Anyway, good fun with that.

0:27:28 > 0:27:32Meanwhile, we're all going to trot off brievement to the auction.

0:27:45 > 0:27:49Well, we've trotted to Bedford to be at Peacock's auctioneers

0:27:49 > 0:27:51to be with Lindsay Vintiner.

0:27:51 > 0:27:53- Lindsay, how lovely to see you. - And you.

0:27:53 > 0:27:55You're going to need all your strength today, my girl,

0:27:55 > 0:27:57because look at this furniture.

0:27:57 > 0:28:00First off, you've got this so-called bergere armchair.

0:28:00 > 0:28:01We have indeed, yes.

0:28:01 > 0:28:03How difficult is this going to be to sell?

0:28:03 > 0:28:06Incredibly difficult, I'm afraid, Tim.

0:28:06 > 0:28:07It's quite a nice shape, isn't it,

0:28:07 > 0:28:10but the caning needs some work doing to it.

0:28:10 > 0:28:14- Will you get £20, do you think? - I hope so.- Yeah.- But not much more.

0:28:14 > 0:28:16It's a toss up, really, whether you get ten, 20 or 30, isn't it?

0:28:16 > 0:28:17It is indeed.

0:28:17 > 0:28:21- Yeah. OK, fine. Well, they paid £45 and it's just too much.- It is.

0:28:21 > 0:28:24And then they've gone on, look, with the games table.

0:28:24 > 0:28:26Falls into the same category, doesn't it?

0:28:26 > 0:28:28The brown furniture category sadly.

0:28:28 > 0:28:32- What's your estimate?- It's useful. It's a nice size. 20-30.

0:28:32 > 0:28:34£20-£30, OK. £65 paid.

0:28:34 > 0:28:38And then we move to this telescope, which is at least old.

0:28:38 > 0:28:41It is, yes. Anything of military interest is a good seller

0:28:41 > 0:28:44- at the moment.- Yeah.- I think we could do quite well with this.

0:28:44 > 0:28:47- How much?- 40-60.- I think you're in focus there.

0:28:47 > 0:28:48£55 they paid.

0:28:48 > 0:28:50And I can see it making that.

0:28:50 > 0:28:52So that's their only ray of sunshine.

0:28:52 > 0:28:54The rest of it, I think, is going to be a disaster

0:28:54 > 0:28:55and they'll need their bonus buy.

0:28:55 > 0:28:56So let's go and have a look at it.

0:28:58 > 0:29:02Wow, this is a big one, as they say. Ha!

0:29:02 > 0:29:05£135 of leftover lolly you gave Kate.

0:29:05 > 0:29:07- What did you spend it on, Kate? - Well...

0:29:09 > 0:29:13I know you wanted some furniture.

0:29:13 > 0:29:14Cor, this seems familiar.

0:29:14 > 0:29:18Now, remember the Blues were also offered this trunk at £55.

0:29:18 > 0:29:21Open it up. It's made of pine

0:29:21 > 0:29:24and in pretty original order, I would say.

0:29:24 > 0:29:28- How old do you think it is? - Early 20th century, I would say.

0:29:28 > 0:29:31If you look at the hinges and the handles, those have certainly

0:29:31 > 0:29:32- got a bit of age. - How much did you pay?

0:29:32 > 0:29:34- You're straight in there, aren't you?- Well...

0:29:34 > 0:29:35On the money.

0:29:35 > 0:29:37I paid 55.

0:29:37 > 0:29:38Oh.

0:29:38 > 0:29:41Now, the reason I bought this is it may look pretty rustic

0:29:41 > 0:29:45and distressed, and a bit of a tatty old box,

0:29:45 > 0:29:48- but these things are commercial because...- And it's got a flat top.

0:29:48 > 0:29:51It has got a flat top, exactly, so you can store it easily,

0:29:51 > 0:29:53shove it under a bed.

0:29:53 > 0:29:56It's got a nice sort of shabby chic look about it,

0:29:56 > 0:30:02which is commercial these days, and £55 I don't think is too bad.

0:30:02 > 0:30:04Will it make any money?

0:30:04 > 0:30:07Well, your guess is probably as good as mine on this one, Ben.

0:30:07 > 0:30:10I can see it making a little bit on the right day, yes.

0:30:10 > 0:30:12So, Patty, do you like it or not?

0:30:12 > 0:30:14- Iffy.- Iffy.- Iffy.

0:30:14 > 0:30:17If you don't see it making a profit and you want to reject it,

0:30:17 > 0:30:19then you can do so, but not right now, OK?

0:30:19 > 0:30:22- No, open mind.- Have a think about it, let's see how you get on, but

0:30:22 > 0:30:23for the audience at home,

0:30:23 > 0:30:26let's find out what the auctioneer thinks about Kate's box.

0:30:26 > 0:30:29Well, there we go, another clapped out old box, look.

0:30:30 > 0:30:33I don't think it's beautiful enough to be a toy box

0:30:33 > 0:30:35at the end of the nipper's bed, do you?

0:30:35 > 0:30:37- No, it is a bit mean, really, isn't it? I suppose.- Isn't it?

0:30:37 > 0:30:40I mean, I don't know. It's come out of a shed.

0:30:40 > 0:30:43I just wonder whether, once upon a time,

0:30:43 > 0:30:46it wasn't military, that it didn't have shells in it,

0:30:46 > 0:30:47or something in it.

0:30:47 > 0:30:50It has a sort of wartime feel to it.

0:30:50 > 0:30:52Yeah, it would be nice to make that connection, I suppose.

0:30:52 > 0:30:54- Yeah, OK. What's your estimate? - Ten to 20.

0:30:54 > 0:30:56£55 paid.

0:30:56 > 0:30:58So we'll have to hope that the team don't go with the bonus buy,

0:30:58 > 0:31:02which they almost certainly are going to be desperately needing.

0:31:02 > 0:31:04That's it for the Reds.

0:31:04 > 0:31:06Now for the Blues, which looks a bit lonely over there.

0:31:06 > 0:31:09What you've got is the ebony dressing table box,

0:31:09 > 0:31:11which came out of a huge set.

0:31:11 > 0:31:12It would have done, yes.

0:31:12 > 0:31:14It is silver mounted at least.

0:31:14 > 0:31:16- Anyway, will it make ten pounds? - I hope so.

0:31:16 > 0:31:18- Ten to 15. - It should do, shouldn't it?

0:31:18 > 0:31:20- Yeah.- They only paid ten pounds, so that's all right.

0:31:20 > 0:31:25- Good.- And then you've got the Kartell plastic chair.

0:31:25 > 0:31:27- Do you like that?- I like it, yes. - Do you?- Yeah.

0:31:27 > 0:31:30It's iconic in its way.

0:31:30 > 0:31:34- You see them in hotels, restaurants. - So, what's it worth?- 60-100.

0:31:34 > 0:31:37Well, they'll be well pleased with that. £35 paid.

0:31:37 > 0:31:40- That's absolutely brilliant... - Good.- ..Lindsay, thank you.

0:31:40 > 0:31:43And, lastly, we've got this very ordinary little bar brooch.

0:31:43 > 0:31:46- What's the estimate on the brooch then?- 10-20.

0:31:46 > 0:31:48Ten to 20, and they paid ten pounds. Perfect.

0:31:48 > 0:31:51On that happy note, they're not going to need the bonus buy

0:31:51 > 0:31:52but let's go and have a look at it anyway.

0:31:53 > 0:31:55Well, girls.

0:31:55 > 0:31:58You spent £55, that's all.

0:31:58 > 0:32:00Good Lord.

0:32:00 > 0:32:04£245 of leftover lolly went to David Harper.

0:32:04 > 0:32:05What did you buy, David?

0:32:05 > 0:32:10OK, something completely and altogether different.

0:32:10 > 0:32:11Oh, that's nice.

0:32:11 > 0:32:13- Isn't that lovely?- That's cute.

0:32:13 > 0:32:15A boxed Hornby train set, tin plate.

0:32:15 > 0:32:18- Especially for the girls. - Especially for the girls.

0:32:18 > 0:32:22Girls and boys both enjoy toys, Tim.

0:32:22 > 0:32:24- Oh, yes, that's right. - So there we are.

0:32:24 > 0:32:26- Particularly train sets. - Yeah, particularly.

0:32:27 > 0:32:29- With the instructions...- Nice.

0:32:29 > 0:32:361950s, 1960s, all there, complete, which is why I've bought it.

0:32:36 > 0:32:39It's remarkable for any toy made for a child

0:32:39 > 0:32:45to still be in original condition with all its bits and pieces

0:32:45 > 0:32:46and its box.

0:32:46 > 0:32:49And very often the boxes are worth more money than the objects

0:32:49 > 0:32:51they once housed because they were always destroyed,

0:32:51 > 0:32:53so there we have it, it's complete.

0:32:53 > 0:32:54How much did you pay for it?

0:32:54 > 0:32:57Ah, here we go. Straight down to the money.

0:32:57 > 0:32:58OK.

0:32:58 > 0:33:00We spent £55 on all of our objects.

0:33:00 > 0:33:02I spent exactly the same amount of money.

0:33:02 > 0:33:0555 on this one piece.

0:33:05 > 0:33:08- Do you think it's going to make a profit?- I think it will, yeah.

0:33:08 > 0:33:11- How much do you reckon? - Well, I think 50-70, 70-90.

0:33:11 > 0:33:12It's got to be that.

0:33:12 > 0:33:15And it's all complete. And that is the point, isn't it, really?

0:33:15 > 0:33:18- OK, fine, girls, you've gripped that.- Yes, thank you.- Very good.

0:33:18 > 0:33:20OK, well, right now let's find out

0:33:20 > 0:33:23whether the auctioneer rates David's train set.

0:33:24 > 0:33:26Lovely, Lindsay, another little challenge

0:33:26 > 0:33:27for you to unpack, darling.

0:33:27 > 0:33:29- Thank you very much.- Hmm.

0:33:29 > 0:33:34Imagine it's Christmas Day in 1958 and you unwrap this lot,

0:33:34 > 0:33:36and there inside, complete with the instructions,

0:33:36 > 0:33:38- your Christmas present. - Indeed.- Look, it's all...

0:33:38 > 0:33:41- It's all absolutely... - In good condition.- Super.

0:33:41 > 0:33:43Pair of Pullman coaches as well.

0:33:43 > 0:33:45- Yeah, look at that, cor. - Yeah, a lot going for it, hasn't it?

0:33:45 > 0:33:47- Yeah.- Clockwork of course.

0:33:47 > 0:33:51O Gauge, tin plate and all of that. OK, how much, then?

0:33:51 > 0:33:55- 30-40.- OK, £55 paid by David Harper.

0:33:55 > 0:33:56So there you have it.

0:33:56 > 0:33:58Maybe they'll go with it, maybe they won't.

0:33:58 > 0:34:00That's the excitement of the auction.

0:34:20 > 0:34:22- Yes.- So there's an edge to this for you.- There is, yes.

0:34:22 > 0:34:25- Yes.- A lot is riding on this. - OK, fine.
