0:00:02 > 0:00:03Norfolk is famed for many things,

0:00:03 > 0:00:06including its vibrant lavender fields.

0:00:06 > 0:00:09But did you know that the county has links

0:00:09 > 0:00:12to Native American legend, Pocahontas?

0:00:14 > 0:00:20Well, she married Englishman, tobacco exporter, John Rolfe,

0:00:20 > 0:00:23whose home, Heacham Hall, was just around the corner here.

0:00:23 > 0:00:26How about that for a cracking story?

0:00:26 > 0:00:28Anyway, enough of this dribbling on.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30Let's go bargain hunting, yeah!

0:00:59 > 0:01:00Today, we're at the Norfolk Showground,

0:01:00 > 0:01:04where our teams, as usual, get an hour and £300

0:01:04 > 0:01:06to buy their three items.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09But is this going to have a fairytale ending

0:01:09 > 0:01:12or be the stuff of nightmares?

0:01:12 > 0:01:15Let's tune in and see how they get on.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20The Reds really know how to pick 'em, eh, Paul?

0:01:20 > 0:01:25I think it's ghastly, but it has some age.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27Like everything we've picked out!

0:01:27 > 0:01:29And it's less ghastly than the other things you've picked out.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34And the Blues are in a Continental mood.

0:01:34 > 0:01:36You can see them in Montmartre, can't you?

0:01:36 > 0:01:39You can see them in Montmartre. We're getting into the spirit of it all.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42- Oh, yes!- Oh-oh-oh... - With a glass of wine.

0:01:42 > 0:01:43That's all for later.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45Let's meet the teams.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49Well, on today's show, we've got two teams of friends

0:01:49 > 0:01:51who are just bursting with talent.

0:01:51 > 0:01:55For the Reds, we've got Zo and Jen.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58And, for the Blues, we've got Val and Ann. Hello, everyone.

0:01:58 > 0:01:59- Hello.- Hello.

0:01:59 > 0:02:00Smashing to see you.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03Now, Zo-Zo, you met Jen on one of your gigs.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05Yes. I'm a musician.

0:02:05 > 0:02:06And she came along.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10And then, after the show, we just got talking and got on really well.

0:02:10 > 0:02:11- Well, isn't that nice?- Yeah.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13Tell us about the band and what you get up to.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16We're called F.O.X. It's an electro-pop band.

0:02:16 > 0:02:18We've toured, like, all over the world.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21Last year, we went on tour with Depeche Mode

0:02:21 > 0:02:23- and we did a big stadium tour. - Was that fun?

0:02:23 > 0:02:25Oh, it was the best experience.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27- I didn't think it would ever happen, but...- It did.- It did!

0:02:27 > 0:02:30- It was amazing, yeah. - What is your role in the band?

0:02:30 > 0:02:33- What do you get up to? - I'm the singer.- You're the singer?

0:02:33 > 0:02:36So do you have a little trill that you might like to give us now?

0:02:36 > 0:02:38- Oh, no!- I mean, just a little trill

0:02:38 > 0:02:41from the album coming up, that we could just get a flavour?

0:02:41 > 0:02:45# Can you hear my heart?

0:02:45 > 0:02:49# Does it beat in harmony? #

0:02:49 > 0:02:52- That's the only one I can think of right now.- Oh, that's so sweet.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55I think a round of applause for that. And so brave,

0:02:55 > 0:02:57cos I didn't tell you I wanted you to do that.

0:02:57 > 0:02:58Thank you for doing that.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01It's no wonder, Jen, when you went there to this gig,

0:03:01 > 0:03:03you thought, "This is just marvellous."

0:03:03 > 0:03:06Now, you're a fan, not only of '80s music,

0:03:06 > 0:03:09- but you like poking around the street scene a bit, don't you?- Yes.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11Where I live in East London, there's quite a lot

0:03:11 > 0:03:12of street artists and graffiti,

0:03:12 > 0:03:16but it's mainly, like, mural pictures on the walls everywhere.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19So I just go round on the weekend and take pictures of all the good stuff.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22- You're trying to spot the next Banksy, then, are you?- Yeah.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24But this is what you studied at university, graphic design?

0:03:24 > 0:03:26I did, yeah, graphics with fine art.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29So I've just got a keen interest in art and everything related to it.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32What sort of things are you going to be shopping for today, Jens?

0:03:32 > 0:03:35Unusual objects. We're quite emotional purchasers, I think.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37- Oh, are you?- Yeah.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39I'm going to be giving you £300 in a moment,

0:03:39 > 0:03:42- so you can get really emotional, which will be lovely.- Perfect.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45Anyway, thank you for joining us, girls. This is going to be fun.

0:03:45 > 0:03:49- Now, Val, you and I have something in common.- We do, indeed, Tim.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52- And what would that be? - Well, I can't think.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54I have 17. How many have you got?

0:03:54 > 0:03:56- One or two more than 17.- Really?

0:03:56 > 0:03:58No, no, no, not that one's bragging, I have to say.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01- But those are very jazzy. - You like them?

0:04:01 > 0:04:05- They're not Paisley, but they're pretty cool. - They've got that look about them.

0:04:05 > 0:04:07Well, I brought four pairs with me.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10These are the ones that we decided were probably the best to wear.

0:04:10 > 0:04:11- Well, you're in the Blue team. - Of course.

0:04:11 > 0:04:14It's all shades of blue. I'm loving it, really. No, good fun.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17Now, you have many talents,

0:04:17 > 0:04:20but aeroplanes have a place in your life.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22Yeah, well, it was very exciting.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24I lived in a boarding school

0:04:24 > 0:04:28and I volunteered to help with the air cadets.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31I got the opportunity to go up in a Tutor, which was great.

0:04:31 > 0:04:35- I didn't expect that in my sixties. - And did you enjoy it?- I loved it.

0:04:35 > 0:04:36I loved it very much.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39- And some of the 16-year-olds, they were looping the loop.- Yes?

0:04:39 > 0:04:41- You know, amazing.- Really scary.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44I tried it once. I wouldn't do it again.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46Now, Ann, it says here you're a committed twitcher.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49- Yeah, I like to twitch.- Do you?

0:04:49 > 0:04:50How serious a twitcher are you?

0:04:50 > 0:04:54- Oh, not that serious. But we like to do the overseas trips.- Oh, do you?

0:04:54 > 0:04:57So you'll go a long way to see an egret?

0:04:57 > 0:05:01Oh, well, not really, because there's one down the road, but...

0:05:01 > 0:05:04We've done Nepal and India and Mexico.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07All these places, just to look at the birds.

0:05:07 > 0:05:09Well, also for a very good holiday, as well.

0:05:09 > 0:05:10Yeah, and very nice, too.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13- Now, you're a campanologist?- Yeah.

0:05:13 > 0:05:15You can have, correct me if I'm wrong,

0:05:15 > 0:05:18because I used to go bell-ringing at school, when I was very young,

0:05:18 > 0:05:21- but maybe you have six or eight bells, say...- We've got eight.

0:05:21 > 0:05:22You've got eight bells.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24- We ring together.- Oh, how lovely!

0:05:24 > 0:05:27So, it's another kind of aspect of your friendship, which is great.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30So, what sort of tactics will you be using today

0:05:30 > 0:05:32to ring in a decent profit?

0:05:32 > 0:05:34- Erm...- We haven't really got any.

0:05:34 > 0:05:38We're just hoping that we spot something, a bargain. Make money.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40Yes. Are you going to be relying on your expert

0:05:40 > 0:05:43or are you going to take a lead yourselves?

0:05:43 > 0:05:46- I think I might rely on her, actually.- OK, fine.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49Well, anyway, the money moment. Here it comes, look, £300 apiece.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52There's your 300. You know the rules. Your experts await.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56And off you go, girls! And very, very, very good luck.

0:05:56 > 0:05:58I'm off to buy a CD.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01Looks like we're in for a good old ding-dong today,

0:06:01 > 0:06:03so let's meet their experts.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05Hello, hello, hello...

0:06:05 > 0:06:07It's the Reds' own bobby dazzler, Paul Laidlaw.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12Taking the lead for the Blues is Catherine Southon.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15What's the plan, teams?

0:06:15 > 0:06:17Probably avoiding vases, glass, pottery.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21Narrowing it down a little bit.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24- If we could find one bargain today, what would it be?- Oh...

0:06:24 > 0:06:26Oh, goodness, that's such a difficult one.

0:06:26 > 0:06:28- Silver.- A nice box.

0:06:28 > 0:06:29Silver or a box?

0:06:29 > 0:06:32Well, it's all out there and we'd better go and find it now,

0:06:32 > 0:06:34because we've just got an hour! Come on!

0:06:34 > 0:06:37- Science things. You're good at that. - Yeah, we know that.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40Well, that's a lot of food for thought there. Shall we get on?

0:06:40 > 0:06:41See if we can find it. Come on, then.

0:06:41 > 0:06:42Let the shopping commence.

0:06:42 > 0:06:44WHISTLE

0:06:44 > 0:06:46Both teams are having a good, old rummage

0:06:46 > 0:06:48and finding their feet with the experts.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51Catherine, something I spotted down here. What about these?

0:06:51 > 0:06:53Cut glass with the silver?

0:06:53 > 0:06:55I don't think they're probably silver, to be honest.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58- They are probably silver-plated. - 32 for the two. No?

0:06:58 > 0:07:00Do you want them?

0:07:00 > 0:07:02- I don't know. Let's carry on a bit longer, then.- OK.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04Let's look a bit further.

0:07:04 > 0:07:05Baby steps, teams.

0:07:05 > 0:07:07Baby steps.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09Plenty of time, though.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12- I like this boar's head. - Oh, you like...

0:07:12 > 0:07:16..this modern, precast cement boar's head?

0:07:16 > 0:07:19- I like it! - Yeah, the awful one. That's right.

0:07:19 > 0:07:23Obviously, I could never say awful. Jen said awful.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26- So I'm just quoting Jen. - All right, then, let's move on.

0:07:26 > 0:07:27No? No.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29Honestly, I do think...

0:07:29 > 0:07:32- We need to get moving, don't we? - Yes.

0:07:32 > 0:07:33Deep breath, Val.

0:07:33 > 0:07:35There's loads of time.

0:07:35 > 0:07:37- The tiger.- Oh, yeah! - The brass tiger?

0:07:37 > 0:07:41- Shall we start with the issues? - Yeah, OK.

0:07:41 > 0:07:42It's ghastly.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47It's erm...not old.

0:07:47 > 0:07:48Oh, dear.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50Oh, dear...

0:07:50 > 0:07:52Am I going to have problems with you guys?

0:07:52 > 0:07:53No, come on, let's go.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58Now, what's Catherine canvassing opinion on?

0:07:58 > 0:08:01- I think this might actually be a little gem here.- OK.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04So you put your canvas on here.

0:08:04 > 0:08:06This pushes through.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09Then you can put all your paints and bits and pieces there.

0:08:09 > 0:08:13FRENCH ACCENT: And you can be 'ere with your beret and little brush,

0:08:13 > 0:08:16of course, doing your little bit.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19And then, when you've had enough, you pack it all up and you move on.

0:08:19 > 0:08:22- It's beautiful. How much is it? - It's 120.

0:08:22 > 0:08:25- So, if we can get that for about 80...- Oh, yes.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28We'll be home and dry. And there's a nice stamp here, as well.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31There's the maker's name here, which I can't quite work out.

0:08:31 > 0:08:32Brew something.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34B-R-E or Brev something.

0:08:34 > 0:08:38- But it's made in France, anyway. So, it's got to be good.- Absolutely.

0:08:38 > 0:08:42- It's where all the good artists come from. What do you think? - Brilliant. I think it's gold.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44You can see them in Montmartre, can't you?

0:08:44 > 0:08:49You can see them in Montmartre. We're getting into the spirit of it all.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52- Oh, yes.- With a glass of wine. - With a glass of wine, of course.

0:08:52 > 0:08:54- And your bit of cheese on the other hand.- Yes, absolutely.

0:08:54 > 0:08:56- Do you think?- Yeah, excellent.

0:08:56 > 0:08:57- Are you buying this?- I love it.

0:08:57 > 0:08:59What's your best price on it?

0:08:59 > 0:09:01The very best would be 95.

0:09:03 > 0:09:05Can we say 85 and we'll go for that?

0:09:05 > 0:09:07- Oh, please.- Oh...

0:09:07 > 0:09:09I can see it on your lips.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12You're just about to say, "Yes, of course!"

0:09:12 > 0:09:1385?

0:09:13 > 0:09:15Go on, 85.

0:09:15 > 0:09:17- Thank you so very much.- OK.

0:09:17 > 0:09:18Oh, that's a first.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20Thank you very much, indeed.

0:09:20 > 0:09:23Bravo, mes petits choux-fleurs.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25Maintenant, ou sont les Rouges?

0:09:25 > 0:09:27And, for those who don't speak French, that means...

0:09:27 > 0:09:30Well done, my little cauliflowers. Now, where are those Reds?

0:09:30 > 0:09:33This is harder than I thought it was going to be.

0:09:33 > 0:09:35Wait a minute, we've been doing this for five minutes

0:09:35 > 0:09:38and it's harder than you thought it was going to be?

0:09:38 > 0:09:40Do you think it's just a tourist thing?

0:09:40 > 0:09:42I think, to be honest with you,

0:09:42 > 0:09:43as lovely as it is,

0:09:43 > 0:09:45I think it probably is just a tourist piece.

0:09:47 > 0:09:51It's a pleasing object and, now brace yourself, this may shock you,

0:09:51 > 0:09:52it's actually an antique.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55CHOIR: # Hallelujah... #

0:09:55 > 0:09:57- Whoa...!- Yes!

0:09:57 > 0:09:59We did it! We found one!

0:09:59 > 0:10:03- Right. I would call this "the zone".- OK.- OK.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05May we stay in the zone.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07- OK, good.- Fine.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09- This is it. Now we're here. - We're warmed up.

0:10:09 > 0:10:11Right, this is it, this is it.

0:10:11 > 0:10:13And, after all that, he didn't buy it.

0:10:13 > 0:10:15Not glass.

0:10:15 > 0:10:19- You'd like a box? - I do quite like boxes, yes.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22Again, this looks more like a mahjong set to me.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25Come on, guys, 20 minutes to go.

0:10:25 > 0:10:26Do you like that chair?

0:10:26 > 0:10:29Hold on, I feel a bit giddy.

0:10:29 > 0:10:30Because that looks like an antique.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32It can't be two antiques on the trot!

0:10:32 > 0:10:34Oh, it's pretty. We're in the zone.

0:10:34 > 0:10:38Victorian, yeah? Striking form. Nice workmanship.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41Look at the carving and the turning, it's all lovely.

0:10:41 > 0:10:46It's £160 and, at the moment, that's worth 50 to 80. Would be enough.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48- It's just too much money for this.- OK.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51The Reds have definitely got their eye in now.

0:10:51 > 0:10:53Just find something cheaper, eh?

0:10:53 > 0:10:56Blues, what are you weighing up, then?

0:10:56 > 0:10:57It's a jockey scale.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01- Yeah, a jockey scale. - I think that may be way...

0:11:01 > 0:11:02They're fantastic.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04But I don't think we can afford it.

0:11:04 > 0:11:06- How much is it, out of interest?- 650.

0:11:06 > 0:11:10- Oh, wow!- Good spot, though. Because that's a fabulous thing.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16I think it's ghastly.

0:11:16 > 0:11:19But it has some age.

0:11:19 > 0:11:21It's like everything we've picked out.

0:11:21 > 0:11:23And it's less ghastly than the other things you've been picking out.

0:11:23 > 0:11:25So, we're improving.

0:11:25 > 0:11:28We've got a table centrepiece. Earthenware.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31Then, cast brass deer, dragging a...

0:11:31 > 0:11:33- Has it got damage? - Mmm, a little bit.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36It has, to the glaze. It's £100.

0:11:36 > 0:11:37How much do you like it now?

0:11:37 > 0:11:39Erm...not £100.

0:11:39 > 0:11:42Nowhere near, to be honest with you.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44I just don't know who would want that.

0:11:44 > 0:11:46I know, that's what I'm worried about.

0:11:46 > 0:11:49I would like it and no-one else in the world would,

0:11:49 > 0:11:51- which is normally what happens.- Yes!

0:11:51 > 0:11:54- Well, it has been the story of today's shop.- It really has.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56- It has to be said.- Yeah. - Could there be a giveaway?

0:11:56 > 0:11:58And, seriously, I'm...

0:11:58 > 0:12:01I'm talking a tiny fraction of that.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03- Or we're wasting our time. - Make me an offer.

0:12:03 > 0:12:07Well, this is a game, we're playing a game. And I'm going to pitch in at...

0:12:07 > 0:12:09What am I going to pitch in at?

0:12:09 > 0:12:11- 30?- She said 30.

0:12:13 > 0:12:1440.

0:12:14 > 0:12:15No...!

0:12:15 > 0:12:18OK, he says, "No." I have to follow the bossman.

0:12:18 > 0:12:1935.

0:12:19 > 0:12:21And then, we're done.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23OK. I think that's the price.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26- Do we like it or do we not for £35 - What do you think?

0:12:26 > 0:12:28- I think we should get it. - Do you?- Yeah.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30I think we need to get something. And we quite like it.

0:12:30 > 0:12:34And he doesn't think it's as ghastly as everything else we've chosen.

0:12:34 > 0:12:36And we've still got two more items. Yeah, OK.

0:12:36 > 0:12:37Oh, God...

0:12:37 > 0:12:41Oh, God! Can you read my mind?

0:12:41 > 0:12:43Let's do it. Let's just be decisive and do it.

0:12:43 > 0:12:45- All right, then, let's buy it.- OK.

0:12:45 > 0:12:47- We've bought it?- Yes.- Fantastic.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50- A good price. Thanks very much. - Thank you.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52Phew! At last, Reds.

0:12:52 > 0:12:56But only 25 minutes to buy your two remaining items.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59Before that, I found something rather cuddly.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09Now, I am not a person who ordinarily goes

0:13:09 > 0:13:11for teddy bears and dolls.

0:13:11 > 0:13:15But, I have to say, having found this bear here at the fair in Norwich,

0:13:15 > 0:13:18I have taken a bit of a shine to him.

0:13:18 > 0:13:24It is a dangerous business buying something about which you know not a lot

0:13:24 > 0:13:25because, as they say,

0:13:25 > 0:13:28a fool and his money are easily parted.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32But this thing has some characteristics

0:13:32 > 0:13:37which encourage me into thinking that it could be quite a good bear.

0:13:37 > 0:13:39First of all, is the colour.

0:13:39 > 0:13:44It is a divine dark chocolate, mid-brown.

0:13:44 > 0:13:49The next thing I do know is you want to go for these jointed bears

0:13:49 > 0:13:51that have got lovely long limbs.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55And, also, these super flat feet.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58Flat feet in bears is good news.

0:13:58 > 0:14:01The material that's been used to cover the paws and the flat feet

0:14:01 > 0:14:03is the finest of fine linen.

0:14:03 > 0:14:07That's not been replaced. That's the original.

0:14:07 > 0:14:09The other thing that I know

0:14:09 > 0:14:12is that you want to go with them with a decent snout.

0:14:12 > 0:14:17And if that snout has got a needleworked nose,

0:14:17 > 0:14:19that's a good sign.

0:14:19 > 0:14:21And he hasn't got plastic eyes, either.

0:14:21 > 0:14:25Glass eyes. And rather lovely ones, too.

0:14:25 > 0:14:28Traditionally, everybody who picks up a bear

0:14:28 > 0:14:31fiddles around in the earhole looking for a button.

0:14:32 > 0:14:35This one doesn't have a button in his earhole.

0:14:35 > 0:14:40But what he has got is a suspicious loose bit of thread

0:14:40 > 0:14:42in the right earhole.

0:14:42 > 0:14:45It's all very well having a button in your earhole and everyone saying,

0:14:45 > 0:14:49"Oh, it's a German Steiff bear. It's worth a lot of money."

0:14:49 > 0:14:52But what happens when the button falls off?

0:14:52 > 0:14:54Which could be the case with our friend here.

0:14:54 > 0:14:58What it has got is a fantastic collar.

0:14:58 > 0:15:03Any toymaker who's going to make a collar to go around a teddy bear,

0:15:03 > 0:15:06that's going to take THAT amount of trouble

0:15:06 > 0:15:09stitching and lining and fitting,

0:15:09 > 0:15:13is going to be a quality teddy-bear maker.

0:15:13 > 0:15:17It's in brilliant condition, apart from a bit of moth up his back.

0:15:17 > 0:15:22I think it could date from the 1910 to the 1915 period,

0:15:22 > 0:15:24which would be marvellous.

0:15:25 > 0:15:30You just have this toss-up moment to decide whether to invest or not.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34The dealer's best prices is £30.

0:15:34 > 0:15:36What might it bring?

0:15:36 > 0:15:39Well, if it is what I think it might be

0:15:39 > 0:15:41and it does date from that period,

0:15:41 > 0:15:44it could be at the top end of £1,000-£1,500.

0:15:44 > 0:15:46It's a no-brainer, isn't it?

0:15:46 > 0:15:47What do you think?

0:15:47 > 0:15:49Yes!

0:15:55 > 0:15:57Right, back to the shopping.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00And, with both teams having bought just one item apiece,

0:16:00 > 0:16:03they really do need to get a move on.

0:16:03 > 0:16:05I think that's quite nice. It looks quite good quality.

0:16:05 > 0:16:07- What's that?- This.

0:16:09 > 0:16:12- It's, sort of, like a stationery box.- It IS nice quality, isn't it?

0:16:12 > 0:16:15It's beautifully stitched, isn't it?

0:16:15 > 0:16:18And you put all your envelopes and things in it there,

0:16:18 > 0:16:21so it looks like it's just like a travelling case.

0:16:21 > 0:16:22Yes.

0:16:22 > 0:16:24This is all, like, simulated.

0:16:24 > 0:16:28So it's a bit like crocodile skin, but it's not.

0:16:28 > 0:16:29How much is on that?

0:16:31 > 0:16:33- 48.- I think 48 is probably a little bit punchy.

0:16:33 > 0:16:35But I don't know.

0:16:35 > 0:16:38I like it, though. I think it's nice quality. You like it?

0:16:38 > 0:16:41- I think it's nice quality. - What would be your...?

0:16:41 > 0:16:42Bottom line, £40.

0:16:44 > 0:16:46- That's the bottom line on it, 40? - The bottom line, 40?

0:16:46 > 0:16:49A couple more, but that would be it.

0:16:49 > 0:16:52- 35?- No, 38, Catherine.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54Shall we leave it for a bit?

0:16:54 > 0:16:57We haven't got long. Just to pre-warn you.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59That's sound advice, Blues.

0:16:59 > 0:17:03And, after 40 minutes, the bottom line is you need a second buy.

0:17:03 > 0:17:06As do the Reds.

0:17:06 > 0:17:10- Why do you like that cigarette case? - It looks different.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12- I like the picture on the front.- OK.

0:17:12 > 0:17:15Where might it come from?

0:17:15 > 0:17:16India?

0:17:16 > 0:17:17Turkey? I don't know!

0:17:20 > 0:17:21I'm not very good with that.

0:17:21 > 0:17:25I think you'll find it's North African in origin.

0:17:25 > 0:17:26OK.

0:17:26 > 0:17:29And when we see these... What's it made out of? It's very light.

0:17:29 > 0:17:30Aluminium?

0:17:31 > 0:17:36What else might we make from aluminium in 1940?

0:17:37 > 0:17:40- Planes?- Absolutely.

0:17:40 > 0:17:41Oooh...

0:17:41 > 0:17:43- This...- Oh, I like that.

0:17:43 > 0:17:48..they say, may have started off as a Luftwaffe bomber, perhaps.

0:17:48 > 0:17:49Oh, right.

0:17:49 > 0:17:53And said bomber is shot down over North Africa

0:17:53 > 0:17:58and later on, some Italian or German prisoners of war salvage aluminium,

0:17:58 > 0:18:02work them into cigarette cases, in this instance,

0:18:02 > 0:18:08and sell them to British and American troops for cigarettes, for example.

0:18:08 > 0:18:09Wow, OK.

0:18:09 > 0:18:12Yeah? And that is a mosque.

0:18:12 > 0:18:16And on the back, we've got this stylised gazelle or whatever.

0:18:16 > 0:18:19And I'll tell you, good workmanship.

0:18:19 > 0:18:20Oh, wow!

0:18:20 > 0:18:22Oh, wow, did you say?

0:18:22 > 0:18:25Of course, poor Tommy Atkins,

0:18:25 > 0:18:29who hasn't been home in months, if not years,

0:18:29 > 0:18:32and is pining for his sweetheart,

0:18:32 > 0:18:35is seduced by this belle in her lingerie

0:18:37 > 0:18:39on the inside of the cigarette case.

0:18:39 > 0:18:40I really like it.

0:18:40 > 0:18:42- You like?- Yeah, I really like it.

0:18:42 > 0:18:43Good!

0:18:43 > 0:18:45Now we are talking, are we not?

0:18:45 > 0:18:47Price tag is...

0:18:47 > 0:18:48£38.

0:18:48 > 0:18:50But I love it. I love it!

0:18:50 > 0:18:52Oh, good. So, do we. Yay!

0:18:52 > 0:18:53At last!

0:18:53 > 0:18:55- There's another one. - There was or there is?

0:18:55 > 0:18:57- There.- Oh, so there is.

0:18:57 > 0:19:02Well, we're muddying the water now. You hold that. Sentiment again.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05- Oh, I love it.- Another mosque.

0:19:05 > 0:19:08- What sort of price, though? - Erm...I think...

0:19:08 > 0:19:12- 38, on each of them. - I'll move to £25 each.

0:19:12 > 0:19:14- I'm going to throw something in. - OK, right.

0:19:14 > 0:19:16This one, we've got North Africa.

0:19:16 > 0:19:19I think we may have divisional or unit insignia here.

0:19:19 > 0:19:21- And more than anything, we've got sauciness.- Yeah, I love that.

0:19:21 > 0:19:24- What's on the inside of that one? - Should we just buy the one, then?

0:19:24 > 0:19:27- I think we buy the one. - So we'll leave this one.

0:19:27 > 0:19:29- That's my advice.- OK.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32Is there any slack? So, that's 25. Is that the bottom line.

0:19:32 > 0:19:33Yeah.

0:19:33 > 0:19:36I think it's a fair price. I don't think there's any point in being greedy.

0:19:36 > 0:19:39- I think it's a fair price. We love it. It's fair.- Yeah.

0:19:39 > 0:19:43- It's a done deal, isn't it? - Yes. Thank you very much.

0:19:43 > 0:19:46And with that, you may have salvaged your shop, Reds.

0:19:46 > 0:19:50But ten minutes left means the Blues have some rescuing of their own to do.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53I absolutely love the shape of that. I think that is stunning.

0:19:53 > 0:19:56- How much is that? - Has it got a stunning price on it?

0:19:56 > 0:19:57I'll do it for 90.

0:20:01 > 0:20:04I think the shape of that is beautiful.

0:20:04 > 0:20:06It's a lot of money for it, isn't it? So...

0:20:06 > 0:20:08What about the box?

0:20:08 > 0:20:12- Have you decided against the box now? - The box is quite expensive.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15Whereas, you know, this is more expensive.

0:20:15 > 0:20:18But it's a sort of bigger chunk for what you get. But what do I know?

0:20:18 > 0:20:22Let's count our beans. Are we going to go for this? £38?

0:20:22 > 0:20:24- Yeah.- I think so.- Fine.

0:20:24 > 0:20:25- Absolutely fine.- Yeah, I think so.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28I think we're going to go for the case, please.

0:20:28 > 0:20:30- You've been very kind. - You're very welcome.

0:20:30 > 0:20:32You've been extremely kind and extremely patient.

0:20:32 > 0:20:36Yeah. That's two items apiece. Get a move on.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38Just five minutes left to find your final items.

0:20:38 > 0:20:39Here it is.

0:20:39 > 0:20:41Let's buy something really nice.

0:20:41 > 0:20:43- One left.- One left.

0:20:43 > 0:20:44But we've still got to focus.

0:20:44 > 0:20:45OK. We're focused.

0:20:45 > 0:20:47Onwards. Onwards, ladies.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49I think that will sell at auction well.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51Erm...

0:20:51 > 0:20:52I'll tell you what.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55I've not seen one quite like it.

0:20:55 > 0:20:59And glass, I've got to say, can do well.

0:20:59 > 0:21:00Yeah, Murano it says.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03Yeah, so they've speculated Murano, which is Venice.

0:21:03 > 0:21:05Price, do we know?

0:21:05 > 0:21:0638.

0:21:06 > 0:21:10At that, I think you're firmly in gamble territory.

0:21:10 > 0:21:11OK.

0:21:11 > 0:21:14You too, Jen, you like it as much?

0:21:14 > 0:21:16I like it.

0:21:16 > 0:21:17Do you want to have a think and, then,

0:21:17 > 0:21:20- if we can't find anything else, come back for it?- Yeah.

0:21:20 > 0:21:21OK.

0:21:21 > 0:21:23Don't think for too long, girls.

0:21:24 > 0:21:27- Catherine!- I'm coming. - We're running out of time here.

0:21:27 > 0:21:29At last, the Blues are sensing some urgency.

0:21:29 > 0:21:31Couple of things here.

0:21:31 > 0:21:32You love a box, don't you?

0:21:32 > 0:21:35- Well, we love that. - That's nice, actually.

0:21:35 > 0:21:37- Money box.- Useful.

0:21:37 > 0:21:39I think it's pretty.

0:21:39 > 0:21:40Mm-hm. How much is on it?

0:21:40 > 0:21:43- It's not doing it for me.- 45.

0:21:43 > 0:21:47I think it's more 20 than 45.

0:21:47 > 0:21:48Oh, gosh.

0:21:48 > 0:21:49It's old.

0:21:49 > 0:21:52Yeah, but old is good. You were looking for an antique.

0:21:52 > 0:21:55- You wanted a box. - I want a proper antique, yes.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58But this doesn't do it for me, I'm sorry.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01It's...you know, just doesn't do it.

0:22:01 > 0:22:04Oh, my... Disagreement in the Blue camp.

0:22:04 > 0:22:06Are the Reds doing any better, though?

0:22:06 > 0:22:09- Let me tell you what we're looking at here. You want a big lump?- Yep.

0:22:09 > 0:22:13- This thing here is a stereo zograscope.- Blimey!

0:22:13 > 0:22:17It's a stereo viewer and a big magnifying glass on a stand combined.

0:22:17 > 0:22:19Stereo zograscope.

0:22:19 > 0:22:20If we played with that,

0:22:20 > 0:22:24you would see through your stereo zograscope in full 3-D.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27- Are they quite valuable? - Question is, I'm blathering on.

0:22:27 > 0:22:30It's very cheap at £89.

0:22:30 > 0:22:32Is it all there?

0:22:33 > 0:22:36Let me just get round.

0:22:36 > 0:22:38- So, there's a frame missing.- Right.

0:22:38 > 0:22:39Urgh...!

0:22:39 > 0:22:40I know!

0:22:40 > 0:22:42- Close. But no.- OK.

0:22:43 > 0:22:44Two minutes.

0:22:45 > 0:22:49We're buying the little case. So, perhaps the lady will give us a little bit more off.

0:22:49 > 0:22:50Like your way of thinking.

0:22:50 > 0:22:53I'm just going to sit here and relax, while you do the deal.

0:22:53 > 0:22:56OK. We'll go and negotiate.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58Catherine's leaving her Blues to it,

0:22:58 > 0:23:01while Paul, with the Reds, is getting stuck right in.

0:23:01 > 0:23:03I don't know what to do! I don't know what to do!

0:23:03 > 0:23:06- I think it's the horse, to be honest with you.- Do you? Let's go.

0:23:06 > 0:23:09Right, come on, then, let's go and get it. Thank you very much.

0:23:09 > 0:23:12We would like the inkwell, but we're still...

0:23:12 > 0:23:16I really can't get beneath that £80, I'm afraid.

0:23:16 > 0:23:18- 78?- No.

0:23:18 > 0:23:20The lady is nodding.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22I saw her nodding.

0:23:22 > 0:23:24She who must be obeyed, then.

0:23:24 > 0:23:26- 78?- 78, you've got a deal.

0:23:26 > 0:23:29- Thank you very much.- You're very welcome.- That's brilliant. OK.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32Excellent! We'll go and tell Catherine.

0:23:32 > 0:23:34Come on, Catherine, wake up. You're back on.

0:23:36 > 0:23:38- Hello.- We got it.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41- For 78.- Oh, fantastic. Oh, well done, ladies.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44- And we got some money off. - Well done.

0:23:44 > 0:23:48- 78 with that lovely illusion glass, I think that's a nice piece.- Excellent.

0:23:48 > 0:23:51- It's got every chance. You happy?- Yes. Very happy.

0:23:51 > 0:23:53- Exhausted?- Yes, very exhausted

0:23:53 > 0:23:57- Shall we go and get a lolly? A lolly would be good.- Excellent idea.

0:23:57 > 0:23:58We're back.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01We've got one minute.

0:24:01 > 0:24:02How much can we do the horse for?

0:24:02 > 0:24:05Can we do it for £10? Please, please, please, please, please!

0:24:05 > 0:24:07See, we don't know it's Murano.

0:24:07 > 0:24:0815.

0:24:08 > 0:24:0912?

0:24:09 > 0:24:11- Please. Oh, please.- Go on, then.

0:24:11 > 0:24:12Yay!

0:24:14 > 0:24:16You better shake hands. That was wonderful.

0:24:16 > 0:24:18And in the nick of time.

0:24:18 > 0:24:20Thank you very much.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22What weren't we going to buy?

0:24:22 > 0:24:25- We weren't going to buy any ceramics or glass.- Yes.

0:24:25 > 0:24:26What did we buy?

0:24:26 > 0:24:28Ceramics and glass.

0:24:31 > 0:24:34Time has stopped for the shop.

0:24:34 > 0:24:36So, let's check out what the Red team bought, eh?

0:24:37 > 0:24:42The 20th-Century centrepiece took centre stage, for £35.

0:24:42 > 0:24:45The prisoner-of-war-made cigarette case was liberated,

0:24:45 > 0:24:46for £25.

0:24:48 > 0:24:53Finally, they trotted off with the Murano-style horse, for £12.

0:24:54 > 0:24:56Well, that was pretty boring, wasn't it(?)

0:24:56 > 0:25:00- OK, now, which is your favourite bit, Jennifer?- The cigarette case.

0:25:00 > 0:25:02The cigarette case is your favourite piece?

0:25:02 > 0:25:05- Do you agree with that, Zo-Zo? - Yeah, that's also my favourite.- OK.

0:25:05 > 0:25:08And which piece is going to bring the biggest profit?

0:25:08 > 0:25:10- I think the cigarette case. - Me as well.- The cigarette case?

0:25:10 > 0:25:13- You're obsessed with this cigarette case.- We do love it.

0:25:13 > 0:25:15OK, rumour has it that you spent an enormous fortune.

0:25:15 > 0:25:17- So, how much did you spend?- £72.

0:25:17 > 0:25:19£72?!

0:25:19 > 0:25:20I know...

0:25:20 > 0:25:23- We tried to spend it, but... - Did you? Oh, well.

0:25:23 > 0:25:26But you had your guide and mentor beside you, didn't you?

0:25:26 > 0:25:29- Yeah, certainly did. - He just said "no" to everything!

0:25:30 > 0:25:32Well, we'll see whether he was right or wrong.

0:25:32 > 0:25:33Anyway, so you spent £72.

0:25:33 > 0:25:37I would like to have £228 of leftover lolly, please.

0:25:37 > 0:25:38Thank you.

0:25:38 > 0:25:39- There you go.- Lovely. Thanks.

0:25:39 > 0:25:41So, over to Paul.

0:25:41 > 0:25:43I hope you're going to spend the whole lot, my old friend.

0:25:43 > 0:25:46I'll do my damnedest. I can tell you what I'm not buying, though.

0:25:46 > 0:25:48Concrete and brass!

0:25:50 > 0:25:53Poor girls. Never mind. Good luck with your search, Paul.

0:25:53 > 0:25:56Meanwhile, we're going to check out what the Blue team bought.

0:25:56 > 0:26:01First up, they bought the portable artist's easel and paints for £85.

0:26:03 > 0:26:09The small leather mock-odile skin writing case was purchased for £38.

0:26:09 > 0:26:14And, lastly, the late-Victorian glass inkwell was picked up for £78.

0:26:14 > 0:26:17- Well, that was fun for you girls, wasn't it?- It was brilliant, yes.

0:26:17 > 0:26:19So, Ann, which is your favourite bit?

0:26:19 > 0:26:20I really like the easel,

0:26:20 > 0:26:23because the way it's put together is really neat.

0:26:23 > 0:26:24OK. And Val?

0:26:24 > 0:26:26Yeah, I'd go along with that, as well.

0:26:26 > 0:26:27That was my favourite bit, definitely.

0:26:27 > 0:26:30- Will it bring the biggest profit? - I think, possibly, it will.

0:26:30 > 0:26:31- OK.- Yeah.

0:26:31 > 0:26:33- And you think it will, Ann? - Definitely.

0:26:33 > 0:26:36OK, well, we've got a lot of agreement here, which is lovely.

0:26:36 > 0:26:39And you spent quite a good wodge. How much was it in total again?

0:26:39 > 0:26:40£201.

0:26:40 > 0:26:42I'd like £99 of leftover lolly, please. Thank you.

0:26:42 > 0:26:45That's quite magnificent. Thank you. We've got the four there.

0:26:45 > 0:26:47We've got five there.

0:26:47 > 0:26:49- That'll make up the 99, for certain, for Catherine.- Thank you, Tim.

0:26:49 > 0:26:53- You love a nice wodge to go off with, don't you?- I do. I do.

0:26:53 > 0:26:55And I know exactly what I'm going to buy for these ladies.

0:26:55 > 0:26:56Do you?

0:26:56 > 0:26:59The problem is, I don't think they're going to like it.

0:26:59 > 0:27:00Don't worry about that.

0:27:00 > 0:27:04If you think it's going to make a profit, that's all that matters.

0:27:04 > 0:27:06Anyway, Speedy Gonzales.

0:27:06 > 0:27:09Because we're about to head for the auction. Oooh-ah!

0:27:17 > 0:27:21Well, we've popped about an hour from Norwich to Cambridge

0:27:21 > 0:27:24to Cheffins saleroom to be with Charles Ashton.

0:27:24 > 0:27:26- Charles, good morning. - Good morning, Tim.

0:27:26 > 0:27:28It's a pleasure to be back at Cheffins.

0:27:28 > 0:27:31Now, for the Reds, they've got a mixture.

0:27:31 > 0:27:35And their first, I think, came from behind the Iron Curtain, wouldn't you?

0:27:35 > 0:27:39It certainly has that distinct middle-eastern European look to it.

0:27:39 > 0:27:43- I'm not sure that the combination of the parts works desperately well.- No.

0:27:43 > 0:27:46Because, what we seem to have here is a leaping reindeer.

0:27:46 > 0:27:50The trolley is running across a rutted track,

0:27:50 > 0:27:52- that happens to be in guilt bronze.- Indeed.

0:27:52 > 0:27:55That's then slapped on to a piece of alabaster.

0:27:55 > 0:27:57Then, we have this rather weedy stem,

0:27:57 > 0:27:59that comes up to the piece de resistance,

0:27:59 > 0:28:00which is the earthenware bowl.

0:28:00 > 0:28:03A slightly unusual colour palette, you might say.

0:28:03 > 0:28:04Yes.

0:28:04 > 0:28:08Hopefully, somebody, somewhere, who likes animals and guilt bronze

0:28:08 > 0:28:12and those combinations will think it's a winner...

0:28:12 > 0:28:14- Exactly.- ..and will go for it.

0:28:14 > 0:28:17So, there we have it. There's an awful lot there for you money.

0:28:17 > 0:28:19- There certainly is.- How much money?

0:28:19 > 0:28:21Well, we think £25-£35.

0:28:21 > 0:28:24That's fine. 35 was paid.

0:28:24 > 0:28:25Now, moving on.

0:28:25 > 0:28:29We've got the alloy cigarette case, which I think is rather fun.

0:28:29 > 0:28:34It is. Every side of it has got some piece of engraving or artwork to it.

0:28:34 > 0:28:36Probably is World War II.

0:28:36 > 0:28:39- We've got a rather natty pin-up girl on the inside.- Yes.

0:28:39 > 0:28:42- Looks a bit like Mae West, doesn't she?- It does a bit.

0:28:42 > 0:28:45- I'm sure there's a bit of inspiration there.- And it's in good condition.

0:28:45 > 0:28:48- It's got a story to tell.- It has. - Whatever that story might be.- Yes.

0:28:48 > 0:28:52- And the story we want now, though, Charles, is how much?- £20-£30, Tim.

0:28:52 > 0:28:53Perfect. £25 paid.

0:28:53 > 0:28:57So we're spot-on so far. Now, what about this gee-gee?

0:28:57 > 0:28:58Probably is Murano.

0:28:58 > 0:29:02Again, it's entirely done free-blown or free-crafted by hand.

0:29:02 > 0:29:06A bit of a one-off. If you like that sort of thing, it's very nice.

0:29:06 > 0:29:09- It's in proportion. It's just had a bust tail.- Oh, has he? Pity.

0:29:09 > 0:29:11Just lost a little curlicue. That's quite sharp on the end.

0:29:11 > 0:29:14- But, otherwise, not in bad condition.- No.

0:29:14 > 0:29:16So, how much for a lump like that?

0:29:16 > 0:29:18- £10 or £20 only.- Oh, that's good.

0:29:18 > 0:29:20Don't worry about it. £12 paid.

0:29:20 > 0:29:21I tell you, this team have been very sharp

0:29:21 > 0:29:23- in the amount that they have spent.- Have they?

0:29:23 > 0:29:25- Only £72, you see? - Oh, that's very good.

0:29:25 > 0:29:27So, it's all very reasonable.

0:29:27 > 0:29:28The big thing is, of course,

0:29:28 > 0:29:31your test as to how much you actually get at the end of the day.

0:29:31 > 0:29:35And that will be the determining factor as to whether they need the bonus buy or not.

0:29:35 > 0:29:37But let's have a look at it.

0:29:38 > 0:29:40You gave our man £228.

0:29:40 > 0:29:41Paul, what did you spend it on?

0:29:41 > 0:29:45Well, see what you think of this, in contrast to our other purchases.

0:29:45 > 0:29:46Ooooh...

0:29:46 > 0:29:48Oh... I like that. What does it tell you?

0:29:48 > 0:29:52Aesthetic-wise, any names, any movements come to mind?

0:29:52 > 0:29:55- Is it Art Nouveau? - Art Nouveau. It certainly is.

0:29:55 > 0:29:59It's an utterly delightful full-period little easel clock.

0:29:59 > 0:30:02- Is it brass? - It is. It's lacquered brass.

0:30:02 > 0:30:03How much was it?

0:30:03 > 0:30:05It was.... How much do you think it should have been?

0:30:05 > 0:30:0740.

0:30:07 > 0:30:08- Ouch!- Oh...

0:30:10 > 0:30:13I've paid £50. Just a shade over your expectations.

0:30:13 > 0:30:14Ask me what it could make.

0:30:14 > 0:30:18I think it wants to be worth £50-£80, all day long.

0:30:18 > 0:30:20Really? OK. I like it.

0:30:20 > 0:30:22Yeah. I like it, too. Well done.

0:30:22 > 0:30:23Isn't that exciting?

0:30:23 > 0:30:27Well, let us, for the audience at home right now, though,

0:30:27 > 0:30:30find out just how exciting it is for our auctioneer today.

0:30:31 > 0:30:34So, there we go. That's rather spectacular, isn't it, Charles?

0:30:34 > 0:30:38Do you know, it is. It's good quality. A decent weight.

0:30:38 > 0:30:41We've got some nice casting detail.

0:30:41 > 0:30:42No, it's a handsome thing.

0:30:42 > 0:30:43And it works.

0:30:43 > 0:30:45I think, if you're a collector of Art Nouveau,

0:30:45 > 0:30:49a lover of Art Nouveau, you'd happily have that in your collection.

0:30:49 > 0:30:52You certainly would, wouldn't you? Anyway, we can't beef on about it.

0:30:52 > 0:30:54Except that it is crisp. How much?

0:30:54 > 0:30:57The dial, unfortunately, has a little bit of damage.

0:30:57 > 0:31:00And, for that reason, we've only said £30-£50.

0:31:00 > 0:31:01OK.

0:31:01 > 0:31:04Well, Paul Laidlaw paid £50 and he clearly rates it.

0:31:04 > 0:31:06That's it for the Reds.

0:31:06 > 0:31:08And moving on to the Blues, we've got a lovely mixture, look.

0:31:08 > 0:31:12We've got the portable beach artist's easel.

0:31:12 > 0:31:14Yes.

0:31:14 > 0:31:16It's certainly all-singing and all-dancing.

0:31:16 > 0:31:20You can take it away with you on holiday. It folds up flat.

0:31:20 > 0:31:22Comes ready with some paints.

0:31:22 > 0:31:24It's, Constable, eat your heart out.

0:31:24 > 0:31:26- Absolutely.- How much?

0:31:26 > 0:31:27We've said £40-£60.

0:31:27 > 0:31:29OK. £85 paid.

0:31:29 > 0:31:34It just depends on how many artistes there are about in the saleroom.

0:31:34 > 0:31:40Next is the simulated crocodile skin, little attache or correspondence case.

0:31:40 > 0:31:42- And that's a sweet little thing, isn't it?- It is.

0:31:42 > 0:31:45It's ready to go. It's a pretty little thing. Good colour.

0:31:45 > 0:31:48And it's the sort of thing that would date from...

0:31:48 > 0:31:51Is it just before the Second World War? Is it sort of '30s, do think?

0:31:51 > 0:31:53I think so. I think it's late '20s or '30s.

0:31:53 > 0:31:55- OK, so how much, then?- £20-£40.

0:31:55 > 0:31:59I'm with you with that. I think that's absolutely right. Ann paid £38.

0:31:59 > 0:32:03So, she may have paid just a tad too much for it, based on the condition, really.

0:32:03 > 0:32:04But it's still a useful little thing.

0:32:04 > 0:32:06Carrying on with the theme,

0:32:06 > 0:32:10we've got the most magnificent of glass inkwells.

0:32:10 > 0:32:12- That's a chunky lump, isn't it? - It certainly is.

0:32:12 > 0:32:15It wouldn't blow over in a gale. And it has got some quality to it.

0:32:15 > 0:32:17It's been well used and well loved.

0:32:17 > 0:32:20The plated mounts have lost their silver coating,

0:32:20 > 0:32:22as I think they would once have had.

0:32:22 > 0:32:25But it's in pretty good nick and still a very useful object.

0:32:25 > 0:32:28- How much of a useful object? - We haven't stuck our necks out.

0:32:28 > 0:32:31We've only said £15-£25, I'm afraid.

0:32:31 > 0:32:33With a silver band on it, it's £100-£150.

0:32:33 > 0:32:36But the plated band lets it down a bit.

0:32:36 > 0:32:38I think my estimate would be more like 40 to 60.

0:32:38 > 0:32:41But they're going to be lucky, I think, to get to 78.

0:32:41 > 0:32:44In which case, they'll need their bonus buy. So let's go and have a look at it.

0:32:45 > 0:32:49Now, Val, Ann, this is exciting. £99 you gave to Catherine.

0:32:49 > 0:32:51Catherine, what did you spend it on, darling?

0:32:51 > 0:32:55Well, I know exactly what you two are going to say as soon as you see this.

0:32:55 > 0:32:58And it's going to be, "Why?" OK?

0:32:58 > 0:33:00But here we go...

0:33:00 > 0:33:02Is that... Is that what I think is?

0:33:02 > 0:33:04- What do you think it is? - Bell-ringing.

0:33:04 > 0:33:07- Is it for opening up ropes? - Yes! Well done!

0:33:07 > 0:33:09Here we are. Have a hold.

0:33:09 > 0:33:12Yes, we have them in the tower. But a much smaller version.

0:33:12 > 0:33:14- Do you?- Yes.

0:33:14 > 0:33:17- When we're... What are they called?- Fids.- Fids?

0:33:17 > 0:33:18- F-I-D. Fids.- Fids.

0:33:18 > 0:33:21- Oh, I'm really pleased. - Yeah, I like them.

0:33:21 > 0:33:23Because I thought you'd look at that and think it's terrible.

0:33:23 > 0:33:25And when it's really, really stiff,

0:33:25 > 0:33:28you put that bit in there and then you can splice the rope through.

0:33:28 > 0:33:31- And do they actually look like this? - We have much smaller ones.

0:33:31 > 0:33:34- They are generally steel. - I mean, that is a whopper, isn't it?

0:33:34 > 0:33:38Once upon a time, in the 18th and 19th century,

0:33:38 > 0:33:40this would have been on every ship.

0:33:40 > 0:33:41It's a good sailor's tool.

0:33:41 > 0:33:43Oh, it's for sailing.

0:33:43 > 0:33:46So, this is what would have been used to untie all the ropes.

0:33:46 > 0:33:48- I think you're so clever to find that.- Do you?

0:33:48 > 0:33:52- Yeah, I really do.- Oh, thank you. You're my new best friend.

0:33:52 > 0:33:55- Mostly made from wood. Sometimes made from bone.- It's quite tactile.- It is.

0:33:55 > 0:33:57I think it's lovely.

0:33:57 > 0:33:58But how much?

0:33:58 > 0:34:00You can ask.

0:34:00 > 0:34:02I don't know if I want to tell you. £65, I paid.

0:34:04 > 0:34:07- Right...- It might be a bit chunky. - That's the truth, though, isn't it?

0:34:07 > 0:34:10And marine collectables are everything, aren't they?

0:34:10 > 0:34:12As fids go, that's a lovely example.

0:34:12 > 0:34:14- A fid.- A fid. Fid.

0:34:14 > 0:34:16It's brilliant.

0:34:16 > 0:34:19Well, we've all learned something. Thank you very much, Val.

0:34:19 > 0:34:22But let's learn a little more, at least, for the audience at home,

0:34:22 > 0:34:25by finding out what the auctioneer thinks about Catherine's fid.

0:34:26 > 0:34:30Well, you could bear that with menace, couldn't you, on board.

0:34:30 > 0:34:33You certainly could. It's a lovely bit of timber, isn't it?

0:34:33 > 0:34:36A bit of lignum vitae. Wonderful figuring.

0:34:36 > 0:34:40There's this traditional bit of decoration up here at the top of it.

0:34:40 > 0:34:44And we either think it's a fid or possibly a belaying pin.

0:34:44 > 0:34:47In a marine sale, I've no doubt it would do handsomely.

0:34:47 > 0:34:49In a general sale, what do you think?

0:34:49 > 0:34:52Well, we've suggested £40-£60 for it.

0:34:52 > 0:34:56OK. Well, Catherine paid £65. And she sure knows her marine things.

0:34:56 > 0:35:00And, if the right buyers are around, it'll do some damage.

0:35:00 > 0:35:02So, how do you rate our objects overall, then, Charles?

0:35:02 > 0:35:04It's quite interesting, isn't it?

0:35:04 > 0:35:07- Well, the items, they each tell their own story, really.- They certainly do.

0:35:07 > 0:35:10The next story going to be told is how well you do on the rostrum.

0:35:10 > 0:35:13- So, good luck with that. - Indeed. Thank you so much.

0:35:16 > 0:35:1840.

0:35:18 > 0:35:21All done, then, at £40. I shall sell, then.

0:35:21 > 0:35:25You have good estimates supporting these items that you bought.

0:35:25 > 0:35:27So, I think it's a good £72 worth.

0:35:27 > 0:35:30And then, if you need to, you can fall back on that

0:35:30 > 0:35:35beautiful crisply-cast brass and lacquered Art Nouveau timepiece, all right?

0:35:35 > 0:35:37We're all good with that, aren't we?

0:35:37 > 0:35:41The Bulgarian centrepiece is coming out now. And here it comes...
