0:02:20 > 0:02:23I'm quite handy with a sewing machine, so I'll re-cover things.
0:02:23 > 0:02:27I bought a chair, once, for about £30 from a salvage yard
0:02:27 > 0:02:32- and I resold it on, through my shop at the time, for about £140.- Hey!

0:03:06 > 0:03:07- I think so.- Yeah.
0:03:07 > 0:03:12We're different enough, so Lucy's very passionate about things

0:03:18 > 0:03:21Well, very best of luck with that, Reds. Let's meet our Blues.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34so what do you do for the rest of the days of the week?
0:03:34 > 0:03:37I'm actually a volunteer at the local theatre

0:03:49 > 0:03:51Fantastic. So they start...

0:03:53 > 0:03:56- they come to you and do a slightly more intimate...- Yeah.

0:03:59 > 0:04:03- Do you ever tread the boards yourself?- It's been known, yeah.
0:04:03 > 0:04:08Because I run a theatre group that I started about 26 years ago

0:04:11 > 0:04:15and I have appeared in several pantos over the years,
0:04:15 > 0:04:19- as the genie and fairy godfather and other things.- Fairy godfather?
0:04:19 > 0:04:21That's very 21st century. I like it.

0:04:24 > 0:04:29- Callum, does Dad ever drag you into these shows?- He does, yes.- Does he?
0:04:29 > 0:04:32I was dragged into it. It was good fun. It was good.
0:04:32 > 0:04:37- What roles were you given?- Well, my best role was in We Will Rock You.
0:04:37 > 0:04:43I played the part of Pop and it was like a comedy part, like a hippy.
0:04:43 > 0:04:48- Peace, man.- So, what do you do in your spare time?
0:04:48 > 0:04:49I like to play football.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33Here we go, teams. It's the big money moment.
0:05:33 > 0:05:37- Right, we've got £300 for the Reds.- Thank you.
0:05:37 > 0:05:41- Going straight over to Sean. I like it.- He's the boss!- He's the boss.
0:05:41 > 0:05:44And there you go, Keith. £300. Your experts await.
0:05:44 > 0:05:47Now, off you go. Enjoy.
0:05:47 > 0:05:51Ooh, I think we've got a battle royal on our hands today.
0:05:52 > 0:05:54Let's meet our experts.
0:05:55 > 0:05:59Hoping to bring home the bacon for the Reds, it's Charlie Ross.
0:06:00 > 0:06:04The Blues will be hit for six, as they have Catherine Southon.
0:06:04 > 0:06:08- Are you looking forward to this? - Yep.- A lot. Yes!- Good, good!
0:06:08 > 0:06:11So, Keith, what would you really like to buy today?
0:06:11 > 0:06:15- I'd like to find something to do with horse racing.- Horse racing!
0:06:15 > 0:06:18- What are we going to be looking for? - Something amazing.
0:06:18 > 0:06:19Something amazing.
0:06:19 > 0:06:22Are we going to be quick or turning over every single stone?
0:06:22 > 0:06:25- No, we're going to go for it.- Are we?- Yeah.- We're going to be quick?
0:06:25 > 0:06:27PHONE RINGS
0:06:29 > 0:06:31News just in. Time starts now.
0:06:31 > 0:06:33Come on, let's get walking.
0:06:33 > 0:06:37Right, come on. Follow me. I know where we should be going.
0:06:37 > 0:06:42- CATHERINE:- There we are. It's a saddle.- It's a saddle.
0:06:42 > 0:06:45- Not quite what I was thinking.- Not quite what you were thinking.- No.
0:06:45 > 0:06:46This is rather smart, isn't it?
0:06:46 > 0:06:49- This is rather like a very posh drawing room.- Very regal.
0:06:49 > 0:06:51It's lovely, isn't it?
0:06:51 > 0:06:56Sometimes it's an idea to just find an area, like this, for example,
0:06:56 > 0:07:00and then just... Oh, horses.
0:07:00 > 0:07:04- They're winged horses, so a bit mythical.- Not too sure about that.
0:07:04 > 0:07:05Little pocket watch.
0:07:06 > 0:07:09- What do you think of this? - That's quite cool.- Phone.
0:07:09 > 0:07:12- I love those old phones. - It's got a funny end, though.
0:07:12 > 0:07:15- Do you reckon it would work? - Hello? Hello?
0:07:15 > 0:07:18Do you know what that drawer is?
0:07:18 > 0:07:20No, I was going to ask you the same thing.
0:07:20 > 0:07:23- Do you know what that drawer is? - No.- That is a pull-out drawer for...
0:07:23 > 0:07:25- Does it work?- ..your notepad.
0:07:25 > 0:07:26Except it's not working.
0:07:26 > 0:07:29Oh, my God, he's broken it.
0:07:29 > 0:07:30I've broken it.
0:07:30 > 0:07:33Charlie! That'll be an insurance claim, then.
0:07:33 > 0:07:36Fortunately, Catherine is more delicate.
0:07:36 > 0:07:40That seems nice. It's a very pretty silver-plated tea set.
0:07:40 > 0:07:43Normally, I wouldn't touch silver-plated tea sets
0:07:43 > 0:07:47- but because that's a really nice Art Nouveau shape.- Yeah.
0:07:47 > 0:07:49Three pieces and that's got £39 on it.
0:07:49 > 0:07:52- If you could pick that up for £20... - Yeah.
0:07:52 > 0:07:56- Shall we bear that in mind? - Yeah, we'll bear that in mind.
0:07:56 > 0:07:59That's one for the back burner. Now, what are those Reds up to?
0:07:59 > 0:08:00He's rather fun.
0:08:00 > 0:08:05- I'm just thinking it's in Newbury, races, horsey country.- Racehorse.
0:08:05 > 0:08:10- Yeah?- Love that! You are sharp, aren't you?
0:08:10 > 0:08:13I don't think it's got any age. Shall we see if we can work it?
0:08:17 > 0:08:20- You're taller than I am.- I am. - Just don't break anything.- Yeah.
0:08:20 > 0:08:24- Just as well you're here, Sean. - It's on a cup hook.- There we go.
0:08:27 > 0:08:32- Oh, he's beautiful.- He is rather lovely, isn't he?- Is it real hair?
0:08:33 > 0:08:35- It looks like yours. - Feels like the real thing.
0:08:35 > 0:08:38I was just looking at his tail. It might be.
0:08:38 > 0:08:41That's something that would be fun to buy, purely on price.
0:08:41 > 0:08:44Starting at £24.
0:08:44 > 0:08:48I'd be inclined to whack in at a tenner and see what could happen.
0:08:48 > 0:08:50- I think we need to negotiate about this.- Yep.- Yeah.
0:08:50 > 0:08:52Who's going to negotiate?
0:08:52 > 0:08:54- Shall I take this one? - Yeah, I think so.
0:08:54 > 0:08:56Go and find someone who's going to be kind to us...
0:08:56 > 0:08:58- OK.- ..and bring them back.
0:08:58 > 0:09:01So, the Reds have the bit between their teeth,
0:09:01 > 0:09:04whereas the Blues are yet to hit their stride.
0:09:06 > 0:09:09- Will you just know when you see it, Callum?- Yeah.
0:09:09 > 0:09:12I think so, yeah. I don't really know what I'm looking for.
0:09:12 > 0:09:15Plenty of time left, though, chaps.
0:09:15 > 0:09:19The Reds have managed to get hold of centre assistant Debbie.
0:09:19 > 0:09:23- I've got you a super price! - You haven't!- I have!- How super?
0:09:23 > 0:09:27- £14. No strings attached! - ALL: Oh!
0:09:27 > 0:09:32- I love it! I think that's a... - Deal!- Done!- That's fabulous.
0:09:32 > 0:09:36It's neither old nor particularly amazing, but they love it,
0:09:36 > 0:09:39- so horses for courses. - We can't go wrong, can we?- No.
0:09:39 > 0:09:42- We won't make a fortune, but we won't make a loss.- Good.
0:09:42 > 0:09:45- He's going to gallop home.- Oh!
0:09:45 > 0:09:48That's your first buy in ten minutes.
0:09:48 > 0:09:51Now, off you trot and find number two.
0:09:51 > 0:09:54Blues are still meandering in the cabinets with Catherine,
0:09:54 > 0:09:55who's found a pair of vases.
0:09:55 > 0:09:59They're bronze, they've got a lovely relief shape,
0:09:59 > 0:10:03lovely relief pattern to them, so you can see these oriental figures.
0:10:03 > 0:10:05There's quite a lot going on there.
0:10:05 > 0:10:08I'm not sure if it's on the front and the back. Can you see?
0:10:08 > 0:10:11- Yeah, it's on the back as well, I think.- This looks quite interesting.
0:10:11 > 0:10:14Yeah, it's all the way round. How much do you think they are?
0:10:14 > 0:10:17They've got £95 on them.
0:10:17 > 0:10:20What do you think we should be paying for something like that?
0:10:20 > 0:10:22It would be great to get those for about £40, £50,
0:10:22 > 0:10:25and then maybe they could make a bit more.
0:10:25 > 0:10:26- I quite like those, actually.- Yeah.
0:10:26 > 0:10:28Nothing to do with horse racing but...
0:10:28 > 0:10:30- No, nothing to do with horse racing. - Careful, boys.
0:10:30 > 0:10:33Fixating on a theme can really eat away at your time -
0:10:33 > 0:10:37something our Reds are well aware of, and continue at a pace.
0:10:37 > 0:10:39- What do you think of this? - I think it's lovely.
0:10:39 > 0:10:45It's Victorian. It's pine. I'd like it more if it was mahogany or oak.
0:10:45 > 0:10:48- Have you looked inside it? - No. It has no key.
0:10:48 > 0:10:50I don't think it matters too much about key.
0:10:50 > 0:10:53People wouldn't use this for its original purpose,
0:10:53 > 0:10:56which would have had, possibly, silver in it or whatever.
0:10:56 > 0:11:00It's got a lovely lip to the lining there.
0:11:00 > 0:11:03Having said that, it is... It's got a great double lock.
0:11:03 > 0:11:05Look at the lock. Can you see
0:11:05 > 0:11:08- the double locking mechanism, which is superb?- Good storage.
0:11:08 > 0:11:09- And good storage.- Yeah.
0:11:09 > 0:11:13But I have a price issue with this. £365.
0:11:13 > 0:11:20This, if sold at auction, would probably make between £60 and £80.
0:11:20 > 0:11:24- OK.- OK?- Lovely thing but out of your budget.
0:11:24 > 0:11:26Meanwhile, the Blues are still looking for their first item.
0:11:26 > 0:11:29That's quite good, that 1930s dragonfly brooch.
0:11:29 > 0:11:33- Funnily enough, I just noticed that as well.- Did you?- Yeah, honestly.
0:11:33 > 0:11:36- I'm not just saying that. - That would be quite fun, actually.
0:11:36 > 0:11:38- What is it?- £15.
0:11:38 > 0:11:40It might not be particularly anything special,
0:11:40 > 0:11:44- but I'm just thinking insects as brooches...- Yeah.
0:11:44 > 0:11:46..can actually be quite desirable.
0:11:46 > 0:11:49Yeah, I think that would be worth having a look at.
0:11:49 > 0:11:51- Do you want a quick look at that? - Yeah, let's look at that.
0:11:51 > 0:11:54They've got hold of a centre assistant too. Come on in, Jim.
0:11:54 > 0:11:57- Hello, Jim, hi. - Hello there.- Are you all right?
0:11:57 > 0:12:03- Can we have a look at the dragonfly brooch?- Certainly.- Have a look.
0:12:03 > 0:12:08There's quite a lot of bit of enamel or wear on it.
0:12:08 > 0:12:13- But it is quite detailed, isn't it? The wings.- Yeah.- Have a little look.
0:12:13 > 0:12:17Shall I have a closer look? What does it look like?
0:12:17 > 0:12:19That's the important thing.
0:12:19 > 0:12:22- I think that looks quite good.- Yeah. - Even though the green...
0:12:22 > 0:12:26- Perhaps it's just... - It is worn, it is worn.
0:12:26 > 0:12:32- I think that's quite quirky, isn't it?- They're calling it 1920s.
0:12:32 > 0:12:35- What do you reckon? - Yeah, I think we should...
0:12:35 > 0:12:38Jim, can I ask what would be the best price you could do on that?
0:12:38 > 0:12:42- The best on that would be £12.- £12? You couldn't do any less?
0:12:42 > 0:12:44- Couldn't do any less, I'm afraid. - Couldn't do a tenner?
0:12:44 > 0:12:47- It's 1920s, no. - Even though it's a bit worn?
0:12:47 > 0:12:50There's a bit more character when it's worn.
0:12:50 > 0:12:52There's character, but you know...
0:12:52 > 0:12:56- I think £12 would be the best we could go to.- Are you sure? £11.
0:12:56 > 0:13:00- £11, go on.- £11. Go on. £11, OK. - £11.- £11.
0:13:00 > 0:13:04Crikey, today's teams ARE being coy with the cash.
0:13:04 > 0:13:05- We have one buy.- Yes!
0:13:05 > 0:13:08- Nothing to do with racing at all. - No.- Nothing at all.
0:13:08 > 0:13:12That may be, but with 20 minutes gone, not a moment too soon.
0:13:14 > 0:13:16- I may have found just the thing. - Perfect.
0:13:16 > 0:13:18It's not as nice as your last trunk.
0:13:20 > 0:13:25- Oh, wow.- Any good?- I love it!- Oh! - CHARLIE LAUGHS
0:13:25 > 0:13:27- Hang on, let's open it up. - How do you open it?
0:13:27 > 0:13:30I'm an old trunk opener, you know.
0:13:30 > 0:13:32- THEY GASP - Look!
0:13:32 > 0:13:35- Wow, look! - Luxury linen drop-in tray, madam.
0:13:35 > 0:13:38It's a bit rickety, it's a bit had-it.
0:13:38 > 0:13:39Not a bit like you, Charlie(!)
0:13:39 > 0:13:42- Yeah, but it's got character. - It's a trunk.
0:13:42 > 0:13:45- Has it got leather handles as well? - Old labels as well, look.- Oh.
0:13:45 > 0:13:49"Paid in advance". Look, there's a clue to its age.
0:13:49 > 0:13:55- 3 shillings and a penny. "Luggage in advance".- Scarborough.- Scarborough.
0:13:55 > 0:13:57- I love it.- It's not the best.
0:13:57 > 0:14:00- I wouldn't want to pay £29 for it, I'm afraid.- No.
0:14:00 > 0:14:03- Do you want to negotiate? - Yeah, I think so.
0:14:03 > 0:14:05OK, so while Charlie looks for Debbie,
0:14:05 > 0:14:09it seems the Blues may finally have found what they've been looking for.
0:14:09 > 0:14:13- A riding crop!- Ah. - Do you actually ride?- No.
0:14:13 > 0:14:17- Have you ever been on a horse?- Yeah, once.- And never again.- Never again.
0:14:17 > 0:14:20Right. With antler horn handle.
0:14:20 > 0:14:21Right.
0:14:21 > 0:14:24- Hmm...- OK. - No, I don't think any of us
0:14:24 > 0:14:27are getting particularly excited by that.
0:14:27 > 0:14:30Oh, dear. That's not quite them either.
0:14:30 > 0:14:32Now, back with the Reds and that trunk.
0:14:32 > 0:14:36This is John and John owns the trunk.
0:14:36 > 0:14:38Lucy particularly likes the trunk
0:14:38 > 0:14:42but I don't think any of us quite like the price.
0:14:42 > 0:14:45It's £29. Did it come in a house clearance?
0:14:45 > 0:14:48- It did, yeah.- That gives us a chance, you see, Lucy.
0:14:48 > 0:14:54- Gives us a chance. So, we want a really ridiculously low price.- 19.
0:14:54 > 0:14:57- That's too high.- It could do with a few more labels on it.
0:14:57 > 0:15:00If you could chuck a few more labels on it, John, that would help.
0:15:00 > 0:15:04- Well, I can't do that, so I'll shake your hand at 15.- OK, yeah. Deal.
0:15:04 > 0:15:07- Are you sure you're happy with that, John?- Thank you so much.
0:15:07 > 0:15:09- Thank you.- Thank you very much.
0:15:09 > 0:15:12My word, Reds, you're making this look jolly easy.
0:15:12 > 0:15:15We've bought two things. We've used 25 minutes.
0:15:15 > 0:15:19- We can really shop at our leisure. - Yeah.- Well done.
0:15:19 > 0:15:22Meanwhile, let's take a quick break from all this shopping
0:15:22 > 0:15:25and I'll tell you about some rather special porcelain.
0:15:32 > 0:15:35So, when you're wondering round an antiques centre or antiques fair,
0:15:35 > 0:15:37you will probably instantly recognise
0:15:37 > 0:15:40these wares here as Wedgwood.
0:15:40 > 0:15:42You'll notice that it's the blue jasper cameo ware
0:15:42 > 0:15:46and these are, unfortunately, fairly out of fashion at the moment.
0:15:46 > 0:15:49But that's not to say that ALL Wedgwood is out of fashion
0:15:49 > 0:15:54cos, believe it or not, this is also a piece of Wedgwood,
0:15:54 > 0:15:56what we call fairyland lustre.
0:15:56 > 0:15:58Now, by the beginning of the 20th century,
0:15:58 > 0:16:02unfortunately, Wedgwood had sort of lost its inspiration,
0:16:02 > 0:16:05it had lost that sort of vibrancy that it had
0:16:05 > 0:16:08under its founder, Josiah Wedgwood, in the 18th century.
0:16:08 > 0:16:10But, by the early 20th century,
0:16:10 > 0:16:13Wedgwood was really quite close to bankruptcy
0:16:13 > 0:16:16and they invested quite heavily in bringing in new designers
0:16:16 > 0:16:21and one of these new designers was a lady called Daisy Makeig-Jones.
0:16:21 > 0:16:24She was incredibly lucky that her studio was based
0:16:24 > 0:16:25next to the glaze trial studio
0:16:25 > 0:16:28and, there, she witnessed and saw so much.
0:16:28 > 0:16:31It was really the basis of her training.
0:16:31 > 0:16:35Daisy was heavily influenced by children's stories,
0:16:35 > 0:16:38by Celtic folklore and by the rich patterns and designs
0:16:38 > 0:16:41that she'd seen on old oriental porcelain.
0:16:41 > 0:16:44This one is a wonderful example of her work.
0:16:44 > 0:16:47It is just magical when you look at it.
0:16:47 > 0:16:50It's got this wonderful woodland scene
0:16:50 > 0:16:52on what we call a mother-of-pearl background.
0:16:52 > 0:16:55You can see pixies, you can see elves,
0:16:55 > 0:16:57all surrounding this central whirlpool here,
0:16:57 > 0:17:00that's got little fish poking out from.
0:17:00 > 0:17:03This was typical of her very ingenious
0:17:03 > 0:17:06and quite avant-garde attitude,
0:17:06 > 0:17:09especially if you consider that fashions at the time
0:17:09 > 0:17:11were very much in the art deco.
0:17:11 > 0:17:13We're talking angular, geometric lines.
0:17:13 > 0:17:18Fashion wasn't really about these busy little fantastic designs,
0:17:18 > 0:17:21but it really captured the public imagination.
0:17:21 > 0:17:23But it was a gamble worth taking,
0:17:23 > 0:17:26because Daisy's fairyland lustre range
0:17:26 > 0:17:29really revived the fortunes of Wedgwood.
0:17:29 > 0:17:34And the key to producing these wares was this wonderful, opulent glaze.
0:17:34 > 0:17:38She basically mixed gold, silver and metallic oxides
0:17:38 > 0:17:42together with oil and painted them directly onto the ceramic.
0:17:42 > 0:17:45When these were fired, they then melted together
0:17:45 > 0:17:48to create this wonderful, almost iridescent effect.
0:17:48 > 0:17:51It looks like oil or petrol on the top of a puddle.
0:17:51 > 0:17:53It's just glorious, when you look at it.
0:17:53 > 0:17:56At auction, I would say we're probably looking
0:17:56 > 0:17:59somewhere in the region of maybe £800 to £1,200
0:17:59 > 0:18:03which, of course, starkly contrasts with this blue jasper cameo ware,
0:18:03 > 0:18:06which you can pick up for £5 to £50.
0:18:06 > 0:18:08If I were to invest in a piece of Wedgwood,
0:18:08 > 0:18:11my money would be on the fairyland lustre every time.
0:18:11 > 0:18:15I love its magical qualities, I love its glaze
0:18:15 > 0:18:17and, personally, I love a bit of escapism.
0:18:26 > 0:18:29Now, after 30 minutes, the decisive Reds have bought two items
0:18:29 > 0:18:32and are taking their time over the third,
0:18:32 > 0:18:34but it's a very different story with the Blues,
0:18:34 > 0:18:36who still have two items to find.
0:18:36 > 0:18:39If we don't buy something that we're all really happy with
0:18:39 > 0:18:43and all really excited about very soon, this could go pear-shaped.
0:18:45 > 0:18:48- Come on then, boys. Get stuck in.- What about this?
0:18:48 > 0:18:50- Not horse racing, but hunting.- Mmm.
0:18:50 > 0:18:53- Doo-doo-doo-doo! - Do you think there's any age to it?
0:18:53 > 0:18:57- God knows. Looks like it's got a bit of wear to it.- Yeah.
0:18:57 > 0:19:00- It's copper and brass.- Shall I see if I can get a tune out of it?
0:19:00 > 0:19:04- Go on then. - RASPY BLOW
0:19:04 > 0:19:08Ooh, dear. Oh, no. That sounds like...
0:19:08 > 0:19:11That sounds like the TV's gone funny!
0:19:11 > 0:19:13I saw this chest down here.
0:19:13 > 0:19:15Do you know what that reminds me of?
0:19:15 > 0:19:21I'm a very old, old man and when I went to school, what did I have?
0:19:21 > 0:19:24- This chest.- A tuck box!- Ah.
0:19:24 > 0:19:28- And what better name for a tuck box than Crisp?- Yes!
0:19:28 > 0:19:32OK, Reds, keep your heads on the shopping and not your stomachs.
0:19:32 > 0:19:34Now, the Blues have decided to return for a closer look
0:19:34 > 0:19:37at the pair of bronze vases that they spotted earlier,
0:19:37 > 0:19:39with an asking price of £95.
0:19:39 > 0:19:42- What do you think?- They've got warriors on them, haven't they?
0:19:42 > 0:19:44There's warriors either side
0:19:44 > 0:19:47and then you've got these lovely handles here,
0:19:47 > 0:19:50- with this, like, Greek key pattern.- Yeah.
0:19:50 > 0:19:55Little bit, sort of, bashed around the side. They're not perfect.
0:19:55 > 0:20:00- Is there any markings underneath? - No.- Nothing?- No, nothing at all.
0:20:00 > 0:20:03- Nothing at all.- Lots of dust inside. - Lots of dust inside.
0:20:03 > 0:20:06It would be nice to see a character mark or something
0:20:06 > 0:20:09- and then we could really, perhaps, identify it.- Yeah.
0:20:09 > 0:20:11- And more importantly, put a date to it.- Mmm.
0:20:11 > 0:20:16- How much is on them? - It says £95.- They're £95, right.
0:20:16 > 0:20:18What do you think they'd do at auction?
0:20:18 > 0:20:21- I like the fact that we've got a pair of vases.- Yeah.
0:20:21 > 0:20:23I'm just thinking how old are they?
0:20:23 > 0:20:25I'd like to think they're late 19th century.
0:20:25 > 0:20:28I'm just a bit worried cos there's no markings,
0:20:28 > 0:20:30so we don't know how old they are.
0:20:30 > 0:20:33- I think, if we could get them for the right price...- Hmm.
0:20:33 > 0:20:35- What's the right price?- £40?
0:20:35 > 0:20:39Best price the dealer would do, cos he thinks they are original, is £70.
0:20:39 > 0:20:41I think that price is reasonable.
0:20:41 > 0:20:43And, personally, I think they're quite nice.
0:20:43 > 0:20:45- I think we should get them. - Shall we just got for it?
0:20:45 > 0:20:48- We're happy with that?- Yeah. - Shall we shake the man's hand?
0:20:48 > 0:20:51- Yeah, let's go for it.- Thank you very much.- Thanks, Jim.- Thank you.
0:20:51 > 0:20:54- Thank you.- Thank you.- Wonderful two in the bag.- Yeah.- 20 minutes to go.
0:20:54 > 0:20:56- Let's go for it.- After you.- OK.
0:20:56 > 0:20:59So, that evens things up
0:20:59 > 0:21:02and both teams ease into the last 20 minutes.
0:21:02 > 0:21:06- We could get an elephant to go with your trunk.- I don't think so, Reds.
0:21:06 > 0:21:10- Now, do the Blues have any better ideas?- I like... I like...
0:21:10 > 0:21:13- You look very comfortable there, in your little grocer's.- Yeah.
0:21:13 > 0:21:17- But we haven't got time to play shops.- That's it, Catherine.
0:21:17 > 0:21:19Remember, it's a competition.
0:21:19 > 0:21:22- Were you saying to Lucy that you wanted a pocket watch?- Yeah.- Yeah.
0:21:22 > 0:21:25I quite like this one here.
0:21:25 > 0:21:31Here, we have one by Stewart Dawson of Liverpool.
0:21:31 > 0:21:36That could be the retailer. Oh, look! Open up.
0:21:37 > 0:21:40- Isn't that wonderful? - That is.- It's amazing!
0:21:40 > 0:21:43This actually is an English-made watch.
0:21:43 > 0:21:47There's the balance wheel. If we go like that...
0:21:47 > 0:21:53If the spring's broken, it won't do that. If you want to look inside...
0:21:53 > 0:21:56- Isn't that amazing, the workmanship? - Mmm.
0:21:56 > 0:22:00The inside cover, can you see? It's got a hallmark on it.
0:22:00 > 0:22:03It's got an anchor, which tells us it was made in Birmingham.
0:22:03 > 0:22:07What do you think? I think that it needs to be bought for £40.
0:22:07 > 0:22:11Now, it's got £79 on it. That's really quite a reduction.
0:22:11 > 0:22:14I just think it's going to make £50, £60 at auction.
0:22:14 > 0:22:18DEBBIE: I'd like to give you a chance. I would like £50, but...
0:22:18 > 0:22:21I think, to stand a chance, these two need to buy this for £40.
0:22:24 > 0:22:28- Go on, Charlie.- You're not just doing me a favour.- Thank you!
0:22:28 > 0:22:31- Thank you.- Super.
0:22:31 > 0:22:34Great work, Reds, and big thanks to Debbie, too.
0:22:34 > 0:22:36This is fantastic. I'm looking at the watch
0:22:36 > 0:22:39and it says here, we've got at least ten minutes to spare,
0:22:39 > 0:22:42- which is fabulous! Well done!- Yes!
0:22:42 > 0:22:45- We've bought nicely.- Yeah.- And we're going to sell even better.- Yes!
0:22:45 > 0:22:47- Come on! - Let's hope so, Charlie.
0:22:47 > 0:22:50Now, those Blues are feeling the pressure,
0:22:50 > 0:22:52and with only ten minutes left to find their final item.
0:22:52 > 0:22:57- How are we doing, boys?- We're not. - Ah...- Panicking now.- Are you?
0:22:57 > 0:22:59Yeah. Well, starting to.
0:23:00 > 0:23:05What about a crystal...bottle with a silver top?
0:23:05 > 0:23:08- That's quite nice, isn't it?- Is that too chunky for a lady, do you think?
0:23:08 > 0:23:11No, not at all. I think that would look wonderful
0:23:11 > 0:23:13on any lady's dressing table.
0:23:13 > 0:23:15If I bought that for you, you'd be impressed?
0:23:15 > 0:23:17- I would be very pleased. Please, please do.- OK.
0:23:17 > 0:23:20- I think we should have a look at that.- OK.- You reckon?
0:23:20 > 0:23:22Thankfully, Jim's on hand again.
0:23:22 > 0:23:25- Oh, I love that pattern. - Thanks very much.
0:23:25 > 0:23:29- It's like a swirl. - I love that swirl pattern.
0:23:29 > 0:23:31- Did you see that in the cabinet? - I did, I did, yeah.
0:23:31 > 0:23:34- That's what drew you to it?- Yeah. - Is it perfect?
0:23:34 > 0:23:38- Um...- So, you've got the swirl pattern on the top
0:23:38 > 0:23:41and then you've got like a hobnail band here.
0:23:41 > 0:23:44Yeah, and it's cut at the bottom as well..
0:23:44 > 0:23:46Little bit chipped at the bottom, but to be honest...
0:23:46 > 0:23:49- You'd expect that, probably, wouldn't you?- On the bottom.
0:23:49 > 0:23:52I'm more concerned how the sides are. Gosh, he's giving it to ME!
0:23:52 > 0:23:54KEITH LAUGHS
0:23:54 > 0:24:00- Ah, right.- There we are. Oh, missing its stopper.- Ah, right.
0:24:00 > 0:24:03They're asking £75.
0:24:03 > 0:24:06I think, with the fact that we don't have the stopper,
0:24:06 > 0:24:09you're looking more at £40, £45.
0:24:09 > 0:24:14- The very best price we could do on that would be £50.- Hmm, OK.
0:24:14 > 0:24:18Callum, you're being very quiet. What are you thinking?
0:24:18 > 0:24:21- What's going on in that mind of yours?- I'm just not feeling it.
0:24:21 > 0:24:25I'm just... I kind of get where my dad's coming from
0:24:25 > 0:24:30- but, personally, I really don't like it.- Trust me. I'm your father.
0:24:30 > 0:24:35- That will make us a profit.- Your father has spoken.- Yeah, he has.
0:24:35 > 0:24:38- There you go.- So, um, yeah... - Are we going to go with that?
0:24:38 > 0:24:41- We'll go with that.- Reluctantly. - Yes.- £50? Thanks, Jim.
0:24:41 > 0:24:44- Thank you very much indeed. - Thank you.- Famous last words?
0:24:44 > 0:24:47SHIP HORN BLARES Aye aye, teams,
0:24:47 > 0:24:49your 60 minutes are up.
0:24:49 > 0:24:51- Happy?- Yep, very.- Happy? - Very happy.- Yeah.
0:24:51 > 0:24:54Let's take a closer look at what the Red team bought.
0:24:56 > 0:25:00They trotted off with a decorative wooden horse puppet for £14.
0:25:03 > 0:25:07Next, they packed up the vintage travel trunk for £15.
0:25:09 > 0:25:13Finally, they pocketed this Edwardian silver watch for £40.
0:25:15 > 0:25:17- I've never seen anything like it. - Well...
0:25:17 > 0:25:20Focussed, knew what you wanted. Did you enjoy it?
0:25:20 > 0:25:23- Yes, I thought it was brilliant. - Did you?- Yeah.- Oh, brilliant.
0:25:23 > 0:25:26- How about you, Lucy?- I loved it. - Was it good fun?- Really good stuff.
0:25:26 > 0:25:29And did Charlie guide you through this maze of antiques expertly?
0:25:29 > 0:25:31Yeah, surprisingly, we kind of glided through.
0:25:31 > 0:25:35Normally he gets lost, so that's amazing.
0:25:35 > 0:25:37What do you think's going to make the biggest profit?
0:25:37 > 0:25:40- Probably the pocket watch. - The pocket watch?- Yeah.- OK.
0:25:40 > 0:25:43- And what about you, Sean? - Possibly the horse.- OK.
0:25:43 > 0:25:48- I think we got a good deal on that. - Really? How much did you spend?- £69.
0:25:48 > 0:25:52- So, can I have £231, please? - You may.
0:25:52 > 0:25:56Sean, keeper of the money, I like it. £231, Charlie Ross, though.
0:25:56 > 0:25:58My goodness!
0:25:58 > 0:26:01Have you seen anything on your travels that might suit our Reds?
0:26:01 > 0:26:07- Oh, so many things.- So many things! - And all of them are £231 exactly.
0:26:07 > 0:26:11- So, you're going to blow it all?- I certainly am.- Brilliant. I love it.
0:26:11 > 0:26:14So, whilst Charlie goes and has a little look for our Red team,
0:26:14 > 0:26:16let's remind ourselves what the Blue team bought.
0:26:16 > 0:26:20They swooped in for the dragonfly brooch. £11 paid.
0:26:23 > 0:26:25They returned for the pair of 19th century
0:26:25 > 0:26:29lacquered bronze Japanese vases, paying £70.
0:26:30 > 0:26:33With minutes to spare, they topped off their buying
0:26:33 > 0:26:36with a silver and glass perfume bottle for £50.
0:26:37 > 0:26:40So, guys, was that a totally overwhelming experience?
0:26:40 > 0:26:43- Yeah, it was.- Yeah.- Was it? - It really was, yeah.
0:26:43 > 0:26:45You look quite shellshocked.
0:26:45 > 0:26:48- It was so much harder than it looks on the telly.- Really?- Oh.
0:26:48 > 0:26:50Racing around with a big budget, buying antiques?
0:26:50 > 0:26:53I think the problem was, there was so much choice
0:26:53 > 0:26:55and we were looking for specific things
0:26:55 > 0:26:58and we, unfortunately, didn't find them but, yeah, it was good though.
0:26:58 > 0:27:02- So, what's your favourite item, Callum?- The two Japanese vases.
0:27:02 > 0:27:06- Pair of Japanese vases.- Yeah. - OK, and what about you, Dad?
0:27:06 > 0:27:08Mine's the crystal perfume bottle.
0:27:08 > 0:27:12Do we think the perfume bottle is going to make the biggest profit?
0:27:12 > 0:27:16- No.- Oh.- No.- So, boys, how much did you spend?
0:27:16 > 0:27:21- £131.- So, I would like £169 of leftover lolly, please.- OK.
0:27:21 > 0:27:26Right, Catherine, £169 there to cheer up your Blues.
0:27:26 > 0:27:30- What are you going to spend it on? - Serious bling.- Ooh.- Serious bling?
0:27:30 > 0:27:32Whoo, I like it already!
0:27:32 > 0:27:35Well, while Catherine goes and finds some serious bling,
0:27:35 > 0:27:37we will head off to the auction.
0:27:43 > 0:27:46We have travelled down the road from Northamptonshire to Berkshire
0:27:46 > 0:27:50to be at Special Auction Services with auctioneer Thomas Plant.
0:27:50 > 0:27:54- Christina, what an absolute pleasure.- Why, thanks.
0:27:54 > 0:27:57- Well, it is. It's a pleasure to have you guys here.- Brilliant.
0:27:57 > 0:27:59Let's have a look at what the Red team bought.
0:27:59 > 0:28:04They invested in this rather lovely red painted mule?
0:28:04 > 0:28:09- Mule, horse, donkey... It's in the vein of Muffin the Mule.- Yeah.
0:28:09 > 0:28:12But it's not. It's probably quite recent.
0:28:12 > 0:28:17- It's recent enough to have two broken ears, sadly.- Yeah, it is.
0:28:17 > 0:28:19So, we've said £30 to £50.
0:28:19 > 0:28:22- They'll be delighted. £14 spent.- Oh.
0:28:22 > 0:28:24Now we've gone from India, potentially,
0:28:24 > 0:28:27- to this wonderful travelling trunk. - Mmm.
0:28:27 > 0:28:301940s, which is very well travelled. It's got some wonderful labels
0:28:30 > 0:28:32on the inside and the outside, hasn't it?
0:28:32 > 0:28:34Yes. We sell a lot of these, actually.
0:28:34 > 0:28:36And nicely bound as well, isn't it?
0:28:36 > 0:28:40Yeah, well-bound and it's flat, rather than domed, which is useful.
0:28:40 > 0:28:43- Great coffee table.- Great coffee table. Great at the end of the bed.
0:28:43 > 0:28:45Yeah. Very in vogue right now.
0:28:45 > 0:28:47It is in vogue, so we put £25 to £35 on it.
0:28:47 > 0:28:51- Well, they'll be delighted. £15 only paid for that.- That's really good.
0:28:51 > 0:28:53- I think that was a bargain, don't you?- Mmm.
0:28:53 > 0:28:56- This is their third purchase. What are your thoughts?- I love it.
0:28:56 > 0:29:00It is a good example of an open face with a second subsidiary dial,
0:29:00 > 0:29:05a good maker, in silver, white enamel face, Roman numerals.
0:29:05 > 0:29:09- They could be gold hands.- It's got everything going for it, hasn't it?
0:29:09 > 0:29:12- It has.- And it's got its key. - These should be worth more.
0:29:12 > 0:29:16- They should.- We've put £50 to £70. - Gosh. OK, they paid £40 for it.
0:29:16 > 0:29:18As I said, they should be worth more,
0:29:18 > 0:29:21- because they're lovely bits of kit. - Thomas, this is wonderful.
0:29:21 > 0:29:24Three pieces, three predicted profits.
0:29:24 > 0:29:26They might not need their bonus buy
0:29:26 > 0:29:28but we'll go and have a look at it anyway.
0:29:28 > 0:29:31Well, Sean and Lucy, this is exciting, isn't it?
0:29:31 > 0:29:36- Yeah.- You left Charlie with £231 of leftover lolly.
0:29:36 > 0:29:40- Charlie, I hope you invested it wisely.- Oh, I really did.
0:29:40 > 0:29:44- I bought you a gold naval brooch. - Ooh.
0:29:44 > 0:29:48Now, it's small but it's gold and it was so cheap,
0:29:48 > 0:29:51it comes with the C Ross guarantee of profit.
0:29:51 > 0:29:57If you don't go with this bonus buy, you are, frankly, bonkers!
0:29:57 > 0:29:59- And this will have been given to a sweetheart.- Sweetheart.
0:29:59 > 0:30:03- A naval sweetheart. - When he was going away to sea.
0:30:03 > 0:30:05- Charlie paid only £20 for that. - That's a bargain.
0:30:05 > 0:30:08- And you said it was gold?- It is. It's nine-carat gold.
0:30:08 > 0:30:12- How much do you think it would make? - £50.- Brilliant.
0:30:12 > 0:30:15You don't have to decide now, but let's see if our auctioneer
0:30:15 > 0:30:18is as enamoured with Charlie's sweetheart brooch.
0:30:19 > 0:30:21Here we are, Thomas.
0:30:21 > 0:30:24This is what Charlie has invested their leftover lolly in.
0:30:24 > 0:30:28- It's rather sweet, isn't it? - Aye aye, Captain.- Aye aye, Captain.
0:30:28 > 0:30:33- Well, I know Ross always wanted to be a pirate.- This is true.
0:30:33 > 0:30:37A naval brooch, a lovely gold naval brooch.
0:30:37 > 0:30:40By Page of Plymouth, so a really good retailer. It's a good thing.
0:30:40 > 0:30:43- And it's a great quality piece, isn't it?- It's lovely quality.
0:30:43 > 0:30:46Looking at the casting on it, it's really detailed. It's beautiful.
0:30:46 > 0:30:48It's absolutely super
0:30:48 > 0:30:51- and it's a King's one as well with the King's crown.- There you go.
0:30:51 > 0:30:55So you can date it from there. We've called it Edwardian.
0:30:55 > 0:30:59It might be George V, but it's got some age, which is lovely.
0:30:59 > 0:31:02And how do you rate it? What sort of estimate have you put on that?
0:31:02 > 0:31:05- Sweetheart brooches are popular. We put it in at £50 to £80.- Brilliant.
0:31:05 > 0:31:08- Charlie's only spent £20 on it. - How did he do that?
0:31:08 > 0:31:11- I don't know, but he always does. - I know how he did it.
0:31:11 > 0:31:14- How?- He pretended to be a pirate. - That's the Red team done.
0:31:14 > 0:31:17Let's have a look at the Blue team's selection over here.
0:31:17 > 0:31:18The first item they bought
0:31:18 > 0:31:21is the lovely little dragonfly brooch over there.
0:31:21 > 0:31:23- It's sweet, isn't it? - Very sweet.
0:31:23 > 0:31:26- From a distance. - Yes, it looks great from here.
0:31:26 > 0:31:29Just don't go too close cos it looks like it's out of a cracker.
0:31:29 > 0:31:32- Oh, really?- Yeah, it's really quite poor quality.- Oh, no.
0:31:32 > 0:31:35But, probably new, it would have been wow, amazing.
0:31:35 > 0:31:38There's some loss of the paint. It's in gilt metal.
0:31:38 > 0:31:41- We put it in at £15 to £25. - Well, that's not too bad,.
0:31:41 > 0:31:44- They only paid £11 for it. - There you are then.
0:31:44 > 0:31:47As long as your bidders don't look too closely, we'll be fine.
0:31:47 > 0:31:50Second thing bought was the pair of Meiji vases there.
0:31:50 > 0:31:54Right, well, these are in spelter and they've been bronzed,
0:31:54 > 0:31:57- so they're meant to look like bronze.- But actually they're not.
0:31:57 > 0:32:02- They're not solid.- No. And the quality is half and half.
0:32:02 > 0:32:05- It's half good, half bad, do you know what I mean?- Mmm.
0:32:05 > 0:32:08You can actually see from here, unfortunately,
0:32:08 > 0:32:10you'll see these seams down there.
0:32:10 > 0:32:15- Now, we think that these are yesterday's antiques.- Really?- Yeah.
0:32:15 > 0:32:19- £50 to £80. - Well, they paid £70 for them.
0:32:19 > 0:32:24Moving on to what I think is just the most beautiful scent bottle
0:32:24 > 0:32:26- I think I've ever seen. - It's a good one, isn't it?
0:32:26 > 0:32:31- It's gorgeous!- It's proper glass, good lead crystal glass there.
0:32:31 > 0:32:33It just looks substantial, doesn't it?
0:32:33 > 0:32:36With the hobnail cut, that wave, and then you've got this fabulous
0:32:36 > 0:32:42great big embossed floral screw-off lid. We like it.
0:32:42 > 0:32:45- Obviously like it. What have you put on it?- £70 to £100.- £70 to £100.
0:32:45 > 0:32:50Well, they paid £50 for it, which I think, again, was a very good buy.
0:32:50 > 0:32:52- Really? £50? Wow.- Only £50.
0:32:52 > 0:32:55So, we've got two predicted profits on the table here.
0:32:55 > 0:32:58These might struggle. So, the Blue team might need their bonus buy.
0:32:58 > 0:33:00Let's have a look what it is.
0:33:02 > 0:33:04Catherine, you had quite a substantial sum
0:33:04 > 0:33:06- of leftover lolly, didn't you? - I did.
0:33:06 > 0:33:08£169-worth. What did you spend it on?
0:33:08 > 0:33:13- Well, I bought you a little gem. - Oh...- OK.- Oh, yeah.
0:33:13 > 0:33:17Let me tell you a bit about this. What we've got...
0:33:17 > 0:33:20On first appearance, it does look like a nice gold brooch
0:33:20 > 0:33:23but it's not actually gold, it's actually pinchbeck -
0:33:23 > 0:33:27basically an alloy, mainly made up of copper and zinc,
0:33:27 > 0:33:29to make people think that it's gold.
0:33:29 > 0:33:33But what I liked about this was not so much the gold appearance,
0:33:33 > 0:33:37but the fact that it's a really decorative brooch
0:33:37 > 0:33:40and really nicely studded with these little turquoise stones.
0:33:40 > 0:33:42And I think it's really attractive.
0:33:42 > 0:33:47It cost me £90 and there may be a little profit there.
0:33:47 > 0:33:49There we are, boys. What do you think?
0:33:49 > 0:33:53- Yeah...- Yeah.- Yeah.- Yeah? We're on the fence slightly?- Yeah.- Yeah.
0:33:53 > 0:33:56Well, you don't have to decide now but let's go and see
0:33:56 > 0:33:59what the auctioneer thinks of Catherine's rather beautiful brooch.
0:33:59 > 0:34:01So, here we are, Thomas.
0:34:01 > 0:34:04This is what Catherine invested her leftover lolly in.
0:34:04 > 0:34:10Yes, a brooch, a Victorian brooch in the sort of revivalist style,
0:34:10 > 0:34:13the archaeological revivalist Etruscan style.
0:34:13 > 0:34:16- Lovely with those turquoises. - It is lovely with the turquoise in.
0:34:16 > 0:34:20I don't think it probably started out life as a brooch.
0:34:20 > 0:34:23No, I would agree. Looking at the back of that, unfortunately,
0:34:23 > 0:34:26- there is a bit of solderwork there. - It's been something else.
0:34:26 > 0:34:29- Although, I hope the turquoise really gives them some luck.- Yeah.
0:34:29 > 0:34:32- Turquoise is a lucky stone. - Do you think it will?
0:34:32 > 0:34:35Er, it's difficult to say. £60 to £80 we put on it.
0:34:35 > 0:34:38Well, they will need all the luck in world then,
0:34:38 > 0:34:42- because Catherine paid £90 for it. - Ooh, £90 - that's very punchy.- Mmm.
0:34:42 > 0:34:45We've got a vintage box with it. It's not a fitted box.
0:34:45 > 0:34:48But if two people like it, you never know.
0:34:48 > 0:34:49We will find out later
0:34:49 > 0:34:52whether they want to go with their bonus buy or not.
0:34:52 > 0:34:54- Thomas, will you be taking the auction for us?- Of course.
0:34:54 > 0:34:56Brilliant. We're in safe hands then.
0:34:56 > 0:34:58140 now. 140 now I have.
0:34:58 > 0:35:02- 140 now I have. Any advance on 140? - HE BANGS GAVEL
0:35:02 > 0:35:04- How are you feeling? - Excited, nervous.
0:35:04 > 0:35:09- Oh, Sean, so exciting, isn't it? Lucy?- Yeah, excited.- Very excited.
0:35:09 > 0:35:12- Have you been to an auction before, guys?- This is my first one.- Really?
0:35:12 > 0:35:17- Yeah.- Oh, my goodness.- I know. First time for everything.- Exactly.
0:35:17 > 0:35:18Charlie, how are you feeling?
0:35:18 > 0:35:21- You've got the right earring though, haven't you?- Yes.- Look at that!
0:35:23 > 0:35:26- I love it!- Isn't that the business? - You've already got your gavel?
0:35:26 > 0:35:29- Yeah, already got my golden gavel. - Your first lot up is your favourite.
0:35:29 > 0:35:31You both agreed that your favourite item
0:35:31 > 0:35:34- was that lovely little horse, the puppet.- Yeah.
0:35:34 > 0:35:35Brilliant. Very best of luck.
0:35:35 > 0:35:36He's coming up now.

0:35:43 > 0:35:45He's looking for £15.

0:35:48 > 0:35:53- High on a hill with a donkey. No? - It's definitely worth 15.

0:36:04 > 0:36:06- Once and twice. - HE BANGS GAVEL
0:36:06 > 0:36:10Oh, £10. So you've lost £4 on that, sadly.
