0:00:07 > 0:00:09And it turns out this area has produced some really rather

0:00:09 > 0:00:10remarkable talent.

0:00:15 > 0:00:17Though it turns out that Jay McGuiness,

0:00:17 > 0:00:18singer from The Wanted

0:00:18 > 0:00:21and winner of Strictly Come Dancing, comes from Newark.

0:00:21 > 0:00:25So today, we're after some smooth transitions, some very fancy

0:00:25 > 0:00:30footwork, and most of all, let's not try to crash into anything.

0:00:30 > 0:00:31Let's go Bargain Hunting!

0:00:53 > 0:00:55Newark Fair is enormous!

0:01:10 > 0:01:13The Reds are running out of time...

0:01:13 > 0:01:15- You sure it's not the next one? - It's this one.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21..while the Blues are feeling racy.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24Look at you! That really suits you.

0:01:24 > 0:01:25Thank you.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27And there are shocks at the auction.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33CHEERING

0:01:33 > 0:01:35Sold!

0:01:35 > 0:01:38All that is coming up later. But first, let's meet our teams.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40Today, we have two sets of friends.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42For the Reds, we have Lisa and Marie.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44And for the Blues, we have Jenny and Penny.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46- Welcome, teams. ALL:- Hello.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48Hello. My goodness. That was a cheery hello. I like that.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51Now, firstly, the Reds. Tell me how you met.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53- Marie and I work together.- Yes.

0:01:53 > 0:01:54We met three years ago,

0:01:54 > 0:01:57when I actually interviewed Marie for a client of mine.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59And he hired her.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02Found out three years later that Marie was back on the job market.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05- And we snapped her up straight away. - Brilliant!

0:02:05 > 0:02:06She's worked with us for about a year now

0:02:06 > 0:02:08and we've become really good friends.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11- Yes.- Fantastic. What's she like as an interviewer?

0:02:11 > 0:02:13- She's quite a stickler.- Oh, is she?

0:02:13 > 0:02:15But she did interview me in a bar, so it was quite...

0:02:15 > 0:02:18- In a bar?- Yes.- That is the best kind of interview, isn't it?

0:02:18 > 0:02:22I like your style. I like your style. And where do you work?

0:02:22 > 0:02:25I'm part-owner and director in a national learning

0:02:25 > 0:02:28- and development consultancy. - Oh, wonderful.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30And Marie is my Head of Client Services.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32I love the sound of your office.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34Cos it says here that you watch TV at work.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37- Is that right? - That's the reason we're here.- Oh.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40Because Marie and I like to have our lunch together

0:02:40 > 0:02:43and we watch Bargain Hunt while we have our dinner at lunch time.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46- Brilliant.- Time it perfectly.- We get very passionate, don't we?- We do.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50And we can often be heard shouting, "Don't buy that!"

0:02:50 > 0:02:52So we've put our money where our mouth is.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54I think it was one of the boys who said,

0:02:54 > 0:02:57- "Do you think you could do any better?"- Absolutely.

0:02:57 > 0:02:58I love a challenge, I love it.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00Two girls that love a challenge. Fantastic.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03Look, very best of luck. What are your tactics today, team?

0:03:03 > 0:03:05- Spend small.- And win big.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08- Golden gavel.- Hey. That sounds like a plan.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11- Absolutely.- My goodness. OK, well, very best of luck.- Thank you.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13- I'm sure you'll be brilliant. - Thank you.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15- Now, Blues. Hello.- Hello. - Jenny and Penny. My goodness.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19Hang on a minute. Have they redesigned the golden gavel?

0:03:19 > 0:03:21What is going on here?

0:03:21 > 0:03:23I feel like I should be bowing in your presence, ladies.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25These are fantastic.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28- These are MBEs, are they not? - They are.- Yes.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31They're fabulous. Now, tell me how you go to receive an MBE.

0:03:31 > 0:03:39Well, we actually raised quite a lot of money for our local town hall.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42It was in a very, very poor state.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44Wonderful. So how much did you raise, ladies?

0:03:44 > 0:03:48- We raised...- Over a million pounds. £1.2 million.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51No! You didn't! 1.2 million?

0:03:51 > 0:03:54- Yes.- No wonder you got your MBEs. That's fantastic.

0:03:54 > 0:03:56And did it become the heart of the community again?

0:03:56 > 0:04:00It is now. It's actually paying its own way.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03Fantastic. What a great result. Well done, ladies.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06- What was it like? Did you go to the palace?- We did.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09CHRISTINE GASPS Wow! What was it like?

0:04:09 > 0:04:11- Awe inspiring.- Was it? - It was quite...

0:04:11 > 0:04:14Probably one of the most scary things I've ever done.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16- Really?- I was absolutely terrified.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19- Oh, really? Did you go together? - Yes.- Oh, yes.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22Wonderful. And who presented you with your MBEs?

0:04:22 > 0:04:25- Prince Charles.- Oh, lovely! - Yes, it was.- Fantastic!

0:04:25 > 0:04:27You're still glowing from it. I love it.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30But are you a good team when it comes to antiques hunting?

0:04:30 > 0:04:33- Hopefully. - Are you interested in antiques?

0:04:33 > 0:04:36- Yes. Yes. - She's not sounding too sure, Penny.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39Well, we go round our local antiques centre.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42- Mm-hmm.- And we enjoy looking at them, looking at what's there.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44And sometimes trying to guess what the price

0:04:44 > 0:04:46is before we look at the label.

0:04:46 > 0:04:48- Right. - But we're not very good at it.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50- Oh.- We're rubbish, actually.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52- You're rubbish?- Yes, we're rubbish.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55I'm sure you're not. I'm sure you'll be absolutely fantastic.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57That's not a good tactic to have.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59THEY LAUGH

0:04:59 > 0:05:02So, my girls, what do we need if we're going to go shopping?

0:05:02 > 0:05:03- ALL:- Money!

0:05:03 > 0:05:06Money, exactly. Who's in charge on the Blues?

0:05:06 > 0:05:08- Penny.- Penny is in charge. There we are, Penny.

0:05:08 > 0:05:09£300. Who's in charge?

0:05:09 > 0:05:11- Lisa.- Lisa. £300.- Thank you. - There we go.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14£300 for each team. Your experts await.

0:05:14 > 0:05:15Now off you go.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17- ALL:- Thank you.- And enjoy!

0:05:17 > 0:05:20Are we going to be handing out any golden gavels today?

0:05:20 > 0:05:22Keep watching to find out.

0:05:25 > 0:05:29And guiding our two teams today are our two fabulous experts.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32Serving up a profit for the Reds, it's...

0:05:33 > 0:05:36And he's got his eye on the prize for the Blues, it's...

0:05:37 > 0:05:39What are you looking for?

0:05:39 > 0:05:43- We quite like the idea of a box, don't we?- Yes.- Maybe a wooden box.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45But we quite like the idea of something silver as well.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48OK, Blue gang, what are we going to look for?

0:05:48 > 0:05:51- I have no idea!- Right, you've thought about this one.

0:05:51 > 0:05:53METALLIC CLANGING

0:05:53 > 0:05:56Right, teams, your time starts now.

0:05:56 > 0:05:58- Right, shall we go and find one?- Yes.- Come on.

0:05:58 > 0:06:00Come on, let's go.

0:06:05 > 0:06:06Really looking forward to it.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09How long have you been waiting for this moment, you two?

0:06:09 > 0:06:10- Oh, forever.- Forever?

0:06:10 > 0:06:14- Forever.- This is it.- For years. - This is the highlight.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17Cheeky. Meanwhile, the Reds are on the hunt for silver.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19And they may be in luck.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21Oh, that's nice. What do you think to that?

0:06:21 > 0:06:24- What have you spotted? - Well, there's two there.

0:06:24 > 0:06:25I like the one with the flowers

0:06:25 > 0:06:27- on the top. - They're cornflowers, aren't they?

0:06:27 > 0:06:29Mm. Do you think that's silver, Caroline?

0:06:29 > 0:06:32- It looks silver to me. And enamel.- Thank you.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35What do you think to that?

0:06:35 > 0:06:38I'm going to put my glasses on, that's what I think first.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41I think there's a little bit of discoloration there in the enamel.

0:06:41 > 0:06:46- Right, OK.- Beautiful enamelwork with these cornflowers painted on.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49It is silver. It's £68.

0:06:49 > 0:06:53- Can you see the silver mark there? - Excellent.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55- So, the anchor is for Birmingham. - Right.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58The lion's to say it's British Sterling Silver.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02- And this U mark dates it at 1919. - Right.

0:07:02 > 0:07:06- And it's lovely quality.- Would that have been a pill box or something?

0:07:06 > 0:07:10Yes, or a little powder box to go on the dressing table.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12Do you think the discoloration will affect it

0:07:12 > 0:07:13in terms of the cost, then?

0:07:13 > 0:07:17Yes, I do. Yes. I would rather pay more and have it without that.

0:07:17 > 0:07:21- Right.- Yeah.- What would be the best that you could do?

0:07:21 > 0:07:25- 60 is the best.- Did you say 50? - No, 60 is the best.

0:07:25 > 0:07:29- I'm happy to consider it, but it's a no from me at that.- Right.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32- OK.- But if you think we should, then I'm happy to talk about it.- No.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34- We've got to agree on it. So that's a no.- Right, OK.

0:07:34 > 0:07:36Maybe one to think about.

0:07:36 > 0:07:40Meanwhile, the Blues have found something much less delicate.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42- The Roxano, Grimsby. - My gosh. Look at that.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44Probably a merchant ship of some sort.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47- Yeah, or a fishing boat perhaps. - It could be a fishing boat.

0:07:47 > 0:07:48- But it's a big old bell.- It is.

0:07:48 > 0:07:50- So we're not talking a little fishing boat.- No.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52What sort of money would that go for?

0:07:52 > 0:07:54Well, let's keep it down so they don't hear us.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57But a couple of hundred. 200 to 300.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59Dated as well, 1907, which is lovely.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03Bang on the Edwardian period. It's missing its bell.

0:08:03 > 0:08:05- Has it got no clapper? - BELL RINGS

0:08:05 > 0:08:07- Oh, it's got a nice sound. - Nice sound.

0:08:07 > 0:08:08- Lovely sound.- It's a great sound.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11- But no... - No clapper?- No clapper in there.

0:08:11 > 0:08:13- That will reduce the price, won't it?- Yeah.

0:08:13 > 0:08:15It's a fun thing. It's all about money.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17You two have a look and I'll go and have a word with the dealer.

0:08:17 > 0:08:19- Smashing.- OK.

0:08:19 > 0:08:22Well, they wanted something cheap and odd. Could this be it?

0:08:22 > 0:08:24Now, how are the Reds getting on?

0:08:24 > 0:08:26- You're looking a little bit worried. - I am a bit concerned.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29What is it? The enormity of it?

0:08:29 > 0:08:33It's vast, and there's so many things to look at.

0:08:33 > 0:08:35- Will you feel better when we've got one item?- I think I will.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38- When we've got one in the bag, if you like.- Yeah, yeah.

0:08:38 > 0:08:39I think I'll feel happier.

0:08:39 > 0:08:41Don't panic. We can do this.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43THEY LAUGH

0:08:43 > 0:08:47Oh, dear. But does David have good news for the Blues?

0:08:47 > 0:08:49OK...

0:08:49 > 0:08:52- How much do you think?- 300.- Jenny?

0:08:53 > 0:08:55- 250.- 400.

0:08:55 > 0:08:58- Right, OK.- That's it.- I think we'll carry on.- Away we go.- On our way.

0:08:58 > 0:09:00They make the money.

0:09:00 > 0:09:02That price doesn't chime with the Blues.

0:09:02 > 0:09:06- Ooh, look. A box.- Ah! - It's got a name on it.

0:09:06 > 0:09:11I think if it's got a name on it, it reduces the buyers...

0:09:11 > 0:09:15- It narrows it down.- ..to somebody called...- Mr Chalklen, doesn't it?

0:09:15 > 0:09:19Do we know a Mr Chalklen that might be interested?

0:09:19 > 0:09:22- I don't think I do, do you? - I don't, no.- No.

0:09:22 > 0:09:24Maybe best to move on, girls.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27But it looks like the Blues have stayed on the same stall.

0:09:27 > 0:09:31- I love that. I've never quite seen that design of table before.- No.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34- It's obviously something from the 1950s.- Yes.

0:09:34 > 0:09:38Probably a teak bleached out top on ebonised legs.

0:09:38 > 0:09:40- Yeah.- But have you ever seen a table like that?

0:09:40 > 0:09:42I've never seen one like that.

0:09:42 > 0:09:44- It's a group of tables, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47- It's a bit like a nest of tables. - A bit like a nest, yeah.- Yeah.

0:09:47 > 0:09:49But the other funny thing is with this stuff,

0:09:49 > 0:09:51and if I just show you underneath here...

0:09:51 > 0:09:55Something made in the 1950s in that style, it's really cool.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58And very desirable. But its quality is dreadful.

0:09:58 > 0:10:02It's just literally plywood, stained, with blocks

0:10:02 > 0:10:07screwed on, legs that are not ebony, they're just ebonised.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09- Yeah.- But it's all about the look and the style.

0:10:09 > 0:10:11It's very trendy now.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14I was going to say, a lot of people are buying that, aren't they?

0:10:14 > 0:10:18- Yeah. Is it worth getting a price? - Might be, yes.- Why not?

0:10:18 > 0:10:21Time for David to find out how much it is.

0:10:21 > 0:10:24And it's time for the Reds to head indoors.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27- OK, who said 80?- I did.- Well done.

0:10:28 > 0:10:30Bang on, the best price. That's it.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32How much do you reckon it would go for?

0:10:32 > 0:10:35- It's one of those things. You can't value it.- No.

0:10:35 > 0:10:37I think they might put 50 to 90 on it.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39Yeah, so are we going to buy it for 80?

0:10:39 > 0:10:41- I think it would be a first buy, wouldn't it?- Yep. Why not?

0:10:41 > 0:10:44- Do you fancy it? I mean... - Yeah, I actually...

0:10:44 > 0:10:46- Do you like taking a punt on things? - Yes.- Go on, we'll take a punt.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49- We'll take a punt. - Shall we have a go at it?- Yeah.

0:10:49 > 0:10:50We'll have a go at it.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53- Right, our first purchase. - That's right.- Jolly good.

0:10:53 > 0:10:54I'll go and say yes.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57Ten minutes in and the Blues have bagged an item,

0:10:57 > 0:11:00whilst the Reds are still searching for silver.

0:11:00 > 0:11:02Ah.

0:11:03 > 0:11:04£12.

0:11:05 > 0:11:08- You're not feeling it, are you? - No, not at all.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11- You've got to feel it together, haven't you?- Yeah.- We have.

0:11:11 > 0:11:13What do you think to this?

0:11:13 > 0:11:15- No?- I'm not feeling it.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18This boat's not floating, is it?

0:11:18 > 0:11:22- This boat is distinctly not floating.- Oh, no!

0:11:22 > 0:11:26It looks like they both need to feel it, and it's not happening.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29Meanwhile, the Blues are feeling nostalgic.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31- They're fantastic.- They're great.

0:11:31 > 0:11:33Do they still work?

0:11:33 > 0:11:36Do you want to jump on one and be a biker chick?

0:11:36 > 0:11:38- Could do.- Go for it, baby.

0:11:43 > 0:11:47- Whoa! Look at you!- Yeah. - That really suits you.

0:11:47 > 0:11:48Thank you.

0:11:48 > 0:11:53Jenny is feeling a bit biker chick. But are the Reds finally feeling it?

0:11:53 > 0:11:54I like that.

0:11:55 > 0:11:57Do you not like it?

0:11:57 > 0:11:58- Um, yeah, I do.- But do you?

0:11:58 > 0:12:01That looks like somebody's made that in their shed.

0:12:01 > 0:12:05- It does look fairly simply-made. Yes. It's a writing box.- Yes.

0:12:05 > 0:12:07In mahogany. Parts of it.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09Shall we leave it? There's no point dwelling on it.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11I think we leave it if it's not...

0:12:11 > 0:12:13I don't think it's got a lot to recommend it.

0:12:13 > 0:12:16- But if you both love it... - It's not floating my...

0:12:16 > 0:12:17Looks like that's a no then.

0:12:17 > 0:12:21But with one item under their belt, the Blues are also heading inside.

0:12:21 > 0:12:25- Look at that. Feast your eyes, you two.- Wow.- Yeah.- Get hunting.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29While the Blues are scanning,

0:12:29 > 0:12:33the Reds are still on the hunt for that elusive silver.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36- There's a lot of them about.- Right. - I think it might be just moulded.

0:12:36 > 0:12:41- Right.- Moulded glass. Silver plate. Do you both like it?

0:12:41 > 0:12:45It's more Marie than me, but I'm willing to consider.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48I also quite like the little spoons and the knives.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50- Ah.- Little set there.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53I don't think they're going to be a lot of good, to be honest.

0:12:53 > 0:12:54- OK.- OK.

0:12:54 > 0:12:59- You have got £300.- Yes. - So you can think a bit bigger.

0:12:59 > 0:13:03Halfway through and the Reds are clearly still not feeling it.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06Meanwhile, the Blues have found something that looks like it's

0:13:06 > 0:13:08been living in a barn.

0:13:08 > 0:13:11- They make fantastic coffee tables.- Yeah.

0:13:11 > 0:13:14I mean, it's just an industrial box of some sort, isn't it?

0:13:14 > 0:13:17It's made to move around, cos you've got your big carrying handles there.

0:13:17 > 0:13:19Let's have a look inside.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22Wow, look at that. I mean, that's mouldy.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24So it's been in a damp barn or something.

0:13:24 > 0:13:27Well constructed. Original hinges.

0:13:27 > 0:13:30But is it a hardwood? Let's have a look.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32- It looks like ply. - It looks like ply there, doesn't it?

0:13:32 > 0:13:34It wouldn't be that old if it's ply, would it?

0:13:34 > 0:13:36Could it be ply? That's just a veneer.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38I was going to say, is that a veneer on the top?

0:13:38 > 0:13:41- Yeah, because that's a plank, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:13:41 > 0:13:43- Now, that's a veneer on the top of it.- To make it look smart?

0:13:43 > 0:13:46- Yeah, I think it's a decorative veneer.- Right.

0:13:46 > 0:13:50Obviously, it's contained at some point something reasonably

0:13:50 > 0:13:52valuable, cos you've had a lock on it.

0:13:52 > 0:13:54- Yeah. - It's almost like a cultural thing.

0:13:54 > 0:13:59- Yeah.- But in today's market, fantastic as a doer-upper.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02- Yeah.- We need to know the price. - We do.- We do.

0:14:02 > 0:14:05Shall we ask... What have you got on the box?

0:14:05 > 0:14:08- That's £45. 40 quid. - 40 quid? 30 would be good.

0:14:08 > 0:14:10Would you be happy at 30?

0:14:10 > 0:14:13- Yes.- I think 30 would be good. - Do you want to ask him?

0:14:13 > 0:14:14- I can do.- Go on.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16- Which one am I asking? - I don't know which one.

0:14:16 > 0:14:19Now, out of you two, who's the nicest?

0:14:19 > 0:14:23- He's the negotiator.- Oh, right.- Come on, hit me with your worst shot.

0:14:23 > 0:14:25- Go on.- £30.

0:14:25 > 0:14:27I'll split it with you. 35.

0:14:27 > 0:14:30- Happy?- 35.- Done deal. Thank you very much.

0:14:30 > 0:14:32- Thank you very much. - Thank you very much.

0:14:32 > 0:14:35'You can see how these two raised £1 million for charity!'

0:14:35 > 0:14:40My goodness me. There you go. 31 minutes down. Two purchases in.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43- You two are professional. - That's good.- Naturally.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46- Natural. Come on.- Excellent. - Keep up the good work.

0:14:46 > 0:14:50But the Reds are still looking for their first item.

0:14:50 > 0:14:52You'd think it would be easy, wouldn't you?

0:14:52 > 0:14:53It's really hard.

0:14:53 > 0:14:56Now, whilst the teams continue their shopping,

0:14:56 > 0:15:00I'd like to show you something very stylish that I came across recently.

0:15:07 > 0:15:10If you were ambling around an antiques fair, I think

0:15:10 > 0:15:13it's fair to say that most of you probably wouldn't give this

0:15:13 > 0:15:17piece here a second glance. It's a fairly unassuming piece, isn't it,

0:15:17 > 0:15:20if you have a little look at it. It's obviously a stool.

0:15:20 > 0:15:22Not particularly unusual or radical, you'd think.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25It's got a bit of a tatty, painted metal top here.

0:15:25 > 0:15:29And these turned ash legs. Maybe worth, what, £10 or £20, right?

0:15:29 > 0:15:31Well, that's where you'd be wrong,

0:15:31 > 0:15:34because this piece here is a bit of a hidden gem.

0:15:34 > 0:15:37You see, this stool was made by a chap,

0:15:37 > 0:15:39designed by a chap called Gerald Summers,

0:15:39 > 0:15:40who is today credited

0:15:40 > 0:15:44as being THE most innovative British Modernist designer.

0:15:44 > 0:15:47Summers believed in creating pieces which were the ideal

0:15:47 > 0:15:50unity of material, production, function and form.

0:15:50 > 0:15:53And with his simple sculptural pieces,

0:15:53 > 0:15:56Summers captured the zeitgeist of a decade.

0:15:56 > 0:15:58Internationally recognised, his work placed

0:15:58 > 0:16:01Britain at the forefront of modern design in the 1930s.

0:16:01 > 0:16:04Today, we're used to seeing pieces like this, but can you

0:16:04 > 0:16:07imagine how radical this piece was to look when it was first produced?

0:16:07 > 0:16:09We know this piece is by Summers because,

0:16:09 > 0:16:13if we turn it over and have a little look underneath, just here,

0:16:13 > 0:16:15it's got "Gerald Summers" and this registered design

0:16:15 > 0:16:17and number cast into the base.

0:16:17 > 0:16:20Now, with a little bit of research, I've looked up that number

0:16:20 > 0:16:24and I know that this piece was designed and registered in 1954.

0:16:24 > 0:16:27This modest-looking stool here is sadly not in the best of

0:16:27 > 0:16:32condition, but nonetheless, recently it sold at auction for £300.

0:16:32 > 0:16:36But examples in excellent original condition have made

0:16:36 > 0:16:37upwards of £2,000.

0:16:37 > 0:16:41So, if you find one of these tucked away in an antiques fair

0:16:41 > 0:16:44or in your loft at home, you may just be sitting pretty.

0:16:53 > 0:16:55Let's get back to the shopping.

0:16:55 > 0:16:58Things are still not going well for the Reds.

0:16:58 > 0:17:00I just can't believe this.

0:17:00 > 0:17:03Half the time has gone and we haven't got anything.

0:17:03 > 0:17:06Not one thing remotely in the bag.

0:17:06 > 0:17:09So I'm starting to get worried now. Just a little.

0:17:12 > 0:17:14- Something is going to leap out at you.- It is.

0:17:14 > 0:17:17I don't think it's going to be a Toby jug, though.

0:17:17 > 0:17:20I do hope it's not going to be a Toby jug.

0:17:20 > 0:17:21That's another rejection.

0:17:21 > 0:17:26And now they only have 25 minutes left to find all three items.

0:17:26 > 0:17:30Oh, dear. But the Blues have spotted their own bit of silver.

0:17:30 > 0:17:32Looks like some nice things in there.

0:17:32 > 0:17:37Look, come on. Small and pretty vesta cases. Knock yourselves out.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39- That one.- Which one? - The little box. There.

0:17:39 > 0:17:43- That's a little matchbox, in actual fact.- Oh, right.

0:17:43 > 0:17:45- With cherubs.- It's beautiful.

0:17:45 > 0:17:47- Very collectable.- Yeah.

0:17:47 > 0:17:52- Look at that.- Oh, yes.- Real matches. - Real matches.- Oh, my goodness.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55- Real old matches. - Yeah, it's beautiful.

0:17:55 > 0:17:57Turn it over. See if you can see a hallmark. There you go.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59- There's one there, look. - Can you read that?

0:17:59 > 0:18:01- No, I can't. - HE LAUGHS

0:18:01 > 0:18:04- Have you got good eyes, Jenny? - No, not at all.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07- If I'm over here is that helpful? - No. Not at all.- Not at all?- No.

0:18:07 > 0:18:09OK, let's have a look.

0:18:09 > 0:18:11- It's a lion side on.- Yeah.

0:18:11 > 0:18:13Then we've got an anchor.

0:18:13 > 0:18:15Come on, you've watched this programme enough.

0:18:15 > 0:18:17- Is it London?- No.

0:18:18 > 0:18:21- Birmingham.- Well done, Jenny. My goodness me.

0:18:21 > 0:18:26She is good. And then we have a letter F, which is...

0:18:27 > 0:18:30- Edwardian.- I think so. Do we know what that is?

0:18:30 > 0:18:31It's probably 1900, isn't it?

0:18:31 > 0:18:35- 1905.- 1905. So good guess. - It's 1905. So it's Edwardian.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38- You were right.- Yeah. - I think you said that, yeah.

0:18:38 > 0:18:42- Priced up at £62.- Yeah. - What would be the best on that?

0:18:42 > 0:18:45- How about if we made that 55?- 55.

0:18:45 > 0:18:47I think it's a lovely thing, but I think in auction,

0:18:47 > 0:18:51- there's probably going to be a loss there.- It's too much.- Yeah.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54And profit is the name of the game, so time to move on.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56Time is running out for the Reds.

0:18:56 > 0:19:01So they're racing back to the first stall for that silver enamel box.

0:19:01 > 0:19:02Let's go!

0:19:02 > 0:19:06- 19 minutes left. - Right.- 19 minutes.- Yeah.

0:19:08 > 0:19:11- What do you think?- That's cute. - Caroline, what do you think?- Yeah.

0:19:11 > 0:19:13- You could use that as a jewellery box, couldn't you?- Yeah.

0:19:13 > 0:19:1519th century. Pine.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18Girls, that's not the silver box.

0:19:18 > 0:19:22- I like that.- OK, yeah. I like that. - Should we find out how much it is?

0:19:22 > 0:19:25- Yeah. Hello.- Girls, do you both like that?- Yes.- Yes.

0:19:25 > 0:19:29- Oooh.- Could you tell us how much that item is there?- 65.

0:19:29 > 0:19:35- 65. OK.- If we want to buy the enamel box and that, would you do a deal?

0:19:35 > 0:19:37It's 120 for the two.

0:19:37 > 0:19:41If we were to buy the enamel box, that, and the other silver box,

0:19:41 > 0:19:43would you do us a deal?

0:19:43 > 0:19:45135.

0:19:45 > 0:19:47'Hang on, they've spotted a second silver box.

0:19:47 > 0:19:49'Where's that suddenly come from?'

0:19:49 > 0:19:53- Now, what's that? Scottish thistle on the top.- Yeah.

0:19:54 > 0:19:56It's a bit scratched up, isn't it?

0:19:56 > 0:19:59- It's silver. - What do you think it would make?

0:19:59 > 0:20:02It's a purchase price of 15 if you're buying the three.

0:20:02 > 0:20:05- There's a profit on that.- It's a good price.- Or it should be.- Yeah.

0:20:05 > 0:20:07- Do you like that?- Yeah, I do. I really do.- Do you?- Yes, I do.

0:20:07 > 0:20:12So, from having nothing, are they now buying all three items at once?

0:20:12 > 0:20:15I think we're getting all a bit confused with the chest

0:20:15 > 0:20:20- of drawers, the enamel box, the silver box, and various prices.- Yes.

0:20:20 > 0:20:24So, am I right that you've decided not to get the pine

0:20:24 > 0:20:25chest of drawers?

0:20:25 > 0:20:28- I think we've decided not to. - That's right.

0:20:28 > 0:20:32OK, so to crunch this up, finally, eventually,

0:20:32 > 0:20:35- the enamel-top box is 60.- Yes.

0:20:35 > 0:20:39- The silver thistle-top box is 15.- Yes.

0:20:39 > 0:20:42- And we're taking them both.- You're taking them both?- Yes. We are.

0:20:42 > 0:20:44Thank you.

0:20:44 > 0:20:45Thank you.

0:20:45 > 0:20:47Thank you!

0:20:47 > 0:20:50Great, that's two items finally in the bag.

0:20:50 > 0:20:53Just one more to find. But the clock's still ticking, girls.

0:20:53 > 0:20:56And have the Blues struck gold?

0:20:56 > 0:20:58- STALLHOLDER: Bargains only! - Oh, really?

0:20:58 > 0:21:00- It's only bargains.- Jolly good.

0:21:00 > 0:21:04- Brilliant. - That's all we sell is bargains.

0:21:04 > 0:21:05I'm glad to hear that.

0:21:05 > 0:21:08Bargain of the day, ladies. Sir.

0:21:08 > 0:21:10You won't find anything like this or better than this.

0:21:10 > 0:21:13This is the one for you. You'll win with this.

0:21:13 > 0:21:14So how much of a bargain is it?

0:21:14 > 0:21:18- I'll cut that in half for you. You can read...- OK, that is wonderful.

0:21:18 > 0:21:21- That is so...- Hasn't he got lovely lines?- He has, actually.

0:21:21 > 0:21:25- Great lines. Great colours. - Can we see the other side?

0:21:25 > 0:21:28- Yeah.- Great colours. What does he remind you of?

0:21:28 > 0:21:32Do you know the ancient Chinese Tang horse?

0:21:32 > 0:21:35- Yeah.- It's sort of almost like a stylised version of that.

0:21:35 > 0:21:38- It's the big breasted...- Big, muscular creature. Yeah, exactly.

0:21:38 > 0:21:40I've got to tell you,

0:21:40 > 0:21:44- I would have him in my house at the drop of a hat.- Yeah.

0:21:44 > 0:21:48If we can have him for 35 quid, I think, in the right market,

0:21:48 > 0:21:50that looks like a few hundred pounds' worth.

0:21:50 > 0:21:52- Yeah.- No, it's just gone up.

0:21:52 > 0:21:54THEY LAUGH

0:21:54 > 0:21:56- It won't make that in auction, but ultimately...- I know...

0:21:56 > 0:21:57It could be, couldn't it?

0:21:57 > 0:22:00I was just saying, what would it make in auction?

0:22:00 > 0:22:03- Even if we went 30 to 50...- Yeah.

0:22:03 > 0:22:06- It could still make us a profit, couldn't he?- Yeah.

0:22:06 > 0:22:09- Are we going to have him?- Yes! - Yes.- 35?- Yep.- I'm happy with that.

0:22:09 > 0:22:13- Yeah.- We're happy.- Thank you very much indeed.- Thank you.

0:22:13 > 0:22:15- Thank you so much.- Cheers. All the best to you.

0:22:15 > 0:22:20- Right, you two, 11 minutes left. - Brilliant.- You've done it.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22And that is the star buy of the day.

0:22:22 > 0:22:23- Excellent.- Brilliant.- Are you happy?

0:22:23 > 0:22:26- Very happy.- Very happy. - Double high-fives.

0:22:26 > 0:22:28- Yes! - HE LAUGHS

0:22:28 > 0:22:30Well done, Penny. Come on. Cups of tea.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35The Blues have done it. But the Reds are still up against it.

0:22:37 > 0:22:38Now, what have you found?

0:22:38 > 0:22:42- How much is this, please?- 20. - 20.- And that is the...

0:22:42 > 0:22:44That's your best price?

0:22:44 > 0:22:46Oak 1920s ink stand.

0:22:46 > 0:22:51Fairly ordinary. Fairly... It should be fairly cheap.

0:22:51 > 0:22:53- Yeah.- How much is it?- BOTH: 20.

0:22:53 > 0:22:5520 quid.

0:22:55 > 0:22:58Right, well, I think we're down to the wire now.

0:22:58 > 0:23:02- Yeah.- So, do you both like it? - Yes, I think it's all right.

0:23:02 > 0:23:04Is there anything else we like that we want to compare?

0:23:04 > 0:23:07I can do those three boxes there for £10 if that helps.

0:23:07 > 0:23:09I don't like those.

0:23:09 > 0:23:12- It depends what you've got. - I don't like those.

0:23:12 > 0:23:15- Are they tractor seats?- They are. - How much are the stools?- Wow.

0:23:15 > 0:23:18- The best I can do on them is 100.- No.

0:23:18 > 0:23:20- That's for the pair.- The pair?

0:23:20 > 0:23:23You could see those in a country kitchen.

0:23:23 > 0:23:24Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.

0:23:24 > 0:23:29- Could you do them for 80?- Honestly, the very best would be 100.- 80 quid?

0:23:29 > 0:23:32The very best. I've knocked it right down.

0:23:32 > 0:23:34You don't have to put diesel in them or anything. They just go.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36Sit on them and BRRRRR!

0:23:36 > 0:23:38- I can see that being in a country kitchen.- Oh!

0:23:38 > 0:23:41You're going to have to... The time is ticking.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44- Out of the two, have you got a... - Yes.- Let's point on three.

0:23:44 > 0:23:46- Oh.- One, two, three.

0:23:46 > 0:23:50- Oh! What?! Did you do the opposite? - Yeah, you see, I'm thinking...

0:23:50 > 0:23:53- You should do it again.- Has anybody got a coin? We'll flip a coin.

0:23:53 > 0:23:54Yeah, let's flip.

0:23:54 > 0:23:58- Let's get a coin. - Let's put it down to the universe.

0:23:58 > 0:24:03So we're either £100 on these or £20 on those?

0:24:03 > 0:24:06Heads it's the chairs, tails it's that.

0:24:06 > 0:24:08Three minutes left, girls.

0:24:08 > 0:24:12You know what, you really want those, let's have those.

0:24:12 > 0:24:13Really?

0:24:13 > 0:24:17- The coin is waiting to toss. - Just cos I love you.- No, it's OK.

0:24:17 > 0:24:18Oh! Another moment.

0:24:18 > 0:24:21Mon dieu! Mon dieu!

0:24:21 > 0:24:26- Can you do 95? Please do 95. - 98, how's that?

0:24:26 > 0:24:30- Thank you so much.- Yes!

0:24:30 > 0:24:34That £2 could make all the difference. But they've done it.

0:24:34 > 0:24:36ALARM RINGS

0:24:36 > 0:24:38Time's up, teams.

0:24:38 > 0:24:39Yes, yes, yes!

0:24:39 > 0:24:41Stop the clock.

0:24:41 > 0:24:44Right, it's time to skip off and remind ourselves

0:24:44 > 0:24:46what the Reds bought.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49It is silver and it is a box, the Reds finally got

0:24:49 > 0:24:52what they wanted with the silver enamel box at £60.

0:24:54 > 0:24:59And as a backup, they snapped up a second silver pillbox for £15.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01And finally,

0:25:01 > 0:25:05they went a bit rustic with a pair of tractor seats for £98.

0:25:05 > 0:25:07That went rather quickly, didn't it?

0:25:07 > 0:25:09- It really did. - Did it feel like an hour?

0:25:09 > 0:25:12- No.- Ten minutes. - THEY LAUGH

0:25:12 > 0:25:14What was your favourite item, Lisa?

0:25:14 > 0:25:18When we were thinking of buying it, I was horrified with

0:25:18 > 0:25:19the tractor seats.

0:25:19 > 0:25:21- They are now actually my favourite. - Really? Brilliant.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24They are actually love it or loathe it, aren't they?

0:25:24 > 0:25:25Absolutely. They really are.

0:25:25 > 0:25:28- So are you in agreement about what do you think was the best item?- Yes.

0:25:28 > 0:25:31Are you in agreement about what is going to make the biggest profit?

0:25:31 > 0:25:34- I think it will be the tractor seat. - I think it will be, yeah.

0:25:34 > 0:25:38- Gosh, unanimous all the way. - Yeah.- So what did you spend, girls?

0:25:38 > 0:25:42- 173.- 173.- So can I have £127 of leftover lolly, please?

0:25:42 > 0:25:45- There you are. - Thank you very, very much.

0:25:45 > 0:25:46There we go, Caroline.

0:25:46 > 0:25:48- Thank you.- £127. - Thank you very much.

0:25:48 > 0:25:50What are you going to do with it?

0:25:50 > 0:25:52Whatever I do, I'm going to have to do it quickly.

0:25:52 > 0:25:55Well, while Caroline gets her skates on, let's go

0:25:55 > 0:25:57and see what the Blue team have bought.

0:25:57 > 0:25:59First up, the Blues went retro

0:25:59 > 0:26:02with the Ercol-style set of tables for £80.

0:26:03 > 0:26:05They say where there's muck, there's brass,

0:26:05 > 0:26:09so can this rustic box turn a profit? It cost £35.

0:26:10 > 0:26:11And finally,

0:26:11 > 0:26:14could this stylish horse gallop to success at the auction?

0:26:14 > 0:26:16It also cost them £35.

0:26:16 > 0:26:19Jenny and Penny, did you enjoy your shopping?

0:26:19 > 0:26:21- Yes, it was brilliant.- Yes. - Brilliant!

0:26:21 > 0:26:24The furniture, do you like it?

0:26:24 > 0:26:26- No. - SHE LAUGHS

0:26:26 > 0:26:33- I think... I don't like the first one, but I think it's retro.- No.

0:26:33 > 0:26:36- She doesn't like it. - THEY LAUGH

0:26:36 > 0:26:38So what was your favourite item?

0:26:38 > 0:26:40- The horse.- The horse. And what about you, Penny?

0:26:40 > 0:26:42What was your favourite item?

0:26:42 > 0:26:45- The horse.- Oh, we are in unanimous agreement.

0:26:45 > 0:26:48- The others were boxes. - THEY LAUGH

0:26:48 > 0:26:50What did you spend, ladies?

0:26:50 > 0:26:52- £150.- That's simple, isn't it?

0:26:52 > 0:26:55Can I have £150 of leftover lolly then, please?

0:26:55 > 0:26:57- Thank you very, very much. There we are, David.- Thank you.

0:26:57 > 0:26:59That's a goodly amount, isn't it?

0:26:59 > 0:27:02- That's marvellous.- Are you going to buy something else horsey?

0:27:02 > 0:27:05You know what, I'm going to buy an awful lot of brown furniture.

0:27:05 > 0:27:08You can get a lot of brown furniture for £150.

0:27:08 > 0:27:10Surely something for the ladies, David?

0:27:10 > 0:27:13No, I am on a furniture hunt. Goodbye.

0:27:13 > 0:27:16Well, well, David goes in search of more brown furniture,

0:27:16 > 0:27:18let's head off to the auction.

0:27:27 > 0:27:30So, today we are with our very own Charles Hanson here in Derby.

0:27:30 > 0:27:33- Thank you for having us, Charles.- Pleasure, Christina.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35So, let's start with the Red team today. Lisa and Marie.

0:27:35 > 0:27:37They were looking for boxes from the off.

0:27:37 > 0:27:39What's your thoughts on their first purchase?

0:27:39 > 0:27:41Beautiful, Christina.

0:27:41 > 0:27:44I think when you try and find a box, this is what you're looking for.

0:27:44 > 0:27:48It's a sure sign of quality, seeing enamel.

0:27:48 > 0:27:50It's made by one of the most renowned makers -

0:27:50 > 0:27:51Levi & Solomon.

0:27:51 > 0:27:54It's dated 1919.

0:27:54 > 0:27:56And it's just exquisite.

0:27:56 > 0:27:59The one minor concern, it's almost as though the enamel's got a tan.

0:27:59 > 0:28:01It's been in the sunlight. Well, not really.

0:28:01 > 0:28:04It's actually had some restoration just here.

0:28:04 > 0:28:08Which, on that gorgeous enamel and how it's been set in, it's a

0:28:08 > 0:28:11- real shame.- What have you put on that?- Between £50 and £80.

0:28:11 > 0:28:15- £50 and £80. OK. Well, look. They paid £60 for it.- Good.

0:28:15 > 0:28:17- So we're there or thereabouts. - Yes. Good.

0:28:17 > 0:28:18Moving onto their second item.

0:28:18 > 0:28:21They went from one nice, little box to another little box.

0:28:21 > 0:28:23They went to the year 1976.

0:28:23 > 0:28:26It's a really pretty box and again, Christina,

0:28:26 > 0:28:28it's very similar to the one before.

0:28:28 > 0:28:32It's diminutive. It's a small dressing table box and cover.

0:28:32 > 0:28:37But what sets it off is that gorgeous thistle pierced in the top.

0:28:37 > 0:28:41But also the fact it's a good gauge. It's heavy and quite substantial.

0:28:41 > 0:28:43What have you predicted on that, Charles?

0:28:43 > 0:28:46We hope it will make, Christina, between £30 and £50.

0:28:46 > 0:28:49- Fantastic. They'll be delighted. They paid only £15 for it.- £15?

0:28:49 > 0:28:52- That was a bargain.- Wow. - It really was.

0:28:52 > 0:28:57OK, so from the teeny-weeny-weeny to these rather magnificent

0:28:57 > 0:29:00tractor bar stool seats.

0:29:00 > 0:29:02- Yeah, they're great, aren't they?- Yeah.

0:29:02 > 0:29:04These are quite distinctive.

0:29:04 > 0:29:07As kitchens become more a place to socialise,

0:29:07 > 0:29:11- in that farmhouse interior of modern times, they will sit so well.- OK.

0:29:11 > 0:29:14Good. So, good, decorative pieces that have a certain flair.

0:29:14 > 0:29:16What's your estimate on them?

0:29:16 > 0:29:19We've been quite punchy because we have lots of farming collectors.

0:29:19 > 0:29:21So we've gone in between £60 and £80.

0:29:21 > 0:29:25£60 and £80. OK. Well, that's not too far away.

0:29:25 > 0:29:27- They paid £98 for the pair.- Right.

0:29:27 > 0:29:29Well, look, it's looking vaguely promising,

0:29:29 > 0:29:31but they might need their bonus buy.

0:29:31 > 0:29:33So let's go and have a look at it.

0:29:33 > 0:29:36- Lisa and Marie, this is exciting, isn't it?- It certainly is.

0:29:36 > 0:29:39You entrusted dear Caroline over there

0:29:39 > 0:29:41with £127 worth of leftover lolly.

0:29:41 > 0:29:45- Yes.- What did you do with it, Caroline? Show us.

0:29:45 > 0:29:48- I love it!- Do you like it, yeah?

0:29:48 > 0:29:53It's a Chinese lacquered box. Work box. 19th century.

0:29:53 > 0:29:58Open it up and this would have all your little accoutrements in there.

0:29:58 > 0:30:02Then if we open the base... Look at that.

0:30:02 > 0:30:05Because it's been out of the light, not faded.

0:30:05 > 0:30:07Beautiful, beautiful work.

0:30:07 > 0:30:09So how much did you spend?

0:30:09 > 0:30:14- I had £127 and I spent £55. - MARIE GASPS

0:30:14 > 0:30:16- Yes. 55.- So, girls, you like it?

0:30:16 > 0:30:20- Yeah.- Really like it.- OK. All right, OK. Well, hold that thought.

0:30:20 > 0:30:22You don't have to decide just yet.

0:30:22 > 0:30:24Although it sounds like you've already made up your mind.

0:30:24 > 0:30:26But for the benefit of those at home,

0:30:26 > 0:30:29let's see what Charles thinks of Caroline's rather beautiful box.

0:30:30 > 0:30:31What do you think?

0:30:31 > 0:30:35I like it because it's a real work of art.

0:30:35 > 0:30:37What I love is when you open it up, Christina,

0:30:37 > 0:30:41you'll just see how the colours were in the early days. So, so vibrant.

0:30:41 > 0:30:43- This is very fresh, isn't it? - Absolutely.

0:30:43 > 0:30:47It would date to around, I suppose, 1890, 1900.

0:30:47 > 0:30:50You'll see the banding around the base section here.

0:30:50 > 0:30:54It's clearly had some degree of reconstruction which, again,

0:30:54 > 0:30:57puts some warning lights on its potential purity and value.

0:30:57 > 0:30:59What did you estimate it at?

0:30:59 > 0:31:02We have put a guide price on of between £40 and £60.

0:31:02 > 0:31:05All right, super. Look, Caroline paid £55 for it.

0:31:05 > 0:31:07- So all is not lost.- Not at all. - All is not lost.

0:31:07 > 0:31:10- Right, OK, let's move onto the Blue team.- OK.

0:31:10 > 0:31:12Their first purchase was that nest,

0:31:12 > 0:31:15or the three Ercol-style tables over there.

0:31:15 > 0:31:17They've certainly got a look to them, haven't they?

0:31:17 > 0:31:19They're very stylish. What do you think?

0:31:19 > 0:31:22Those simple lines, those restrained, functional, lightweight

0:31:22 > 0:31:27forms which are all that hint of the Scandinavian theme are so in vogue.

0:31:27 > 0:31:30And they are easy to live with. They're great for the modern home.

0:31:30 > 0:31:33They look modern. But they're 60 years old.

0:31:33 > 0:31:35Good, OK. What's your thoughts on estimates for those?

0:31:35 > 0:31:38Our guide, Christina, is between £30 and £50.

0:31:38 > 0:31:40- Oh, OK.- It's quite mean.

0:31:40 > 0:31:43- But I'm a cautious guy. - They paid £80 for them.

0:31:43 > 0:31:45- Oh, crikey.- Brilliant. OK.

0:31:45 > 0:31:49Well, look, their next item was that fantastic pine chest just there.

0:31:49 > 0:31:52- Isn't that amazing?- Yes, it is. The handles are original.

0:31:52 > 0:31:54It's got this rusty feel about it.

0:31:54 > 0:31:58- But I think, importantly, it's honest.- Yes.- It's clean.

0:31:58 > 0:32:01It just has a life to lead going forward,

0:32:01 > 0:32:04when somebody gets hold of it. I think it's a great object.

0:32:04 > 0:32:07So what is your thoughts on value of the chest?

0:32:07 > 0:32:10Our guide price, Christina, is between £40 and £60.

0:32:10 > 0:32:13- £35 paid. So you're predicting a profit.- Good. I hope so.

0:32:13 > 0:32:17Fantastic. But their third purchase, this rather lovely horse,

0:32:17 > 0:32:18what do you think of him?

0:32:18 > 0:32:23The market now for these West German pots, not just the vases

0:32:23 > 0:32:26but these more, I suppose, evocative animals

0:32:26 > 0:32:31made by the West German factories in the late '60s, '70s,

0:32:31 > 0:32:34have a certain look about them that hasn't been done before.

0:32:34 > 0:32:38And hasn't been done since. And that makes an object collectable.

0:32:38 > 0:32:41- Our guide price is between £30 and £50.- £30 and £50.

0:32:41 > 0:32:44- OK, well, that's not too bad at all cos they paid £35 for it.- Good.

0:32:44 > 0:32:46- So we're there or thereabouts, are we not?- We are.

0:32:46 > 0:32:49They might not need their bonus buy, but let's go

0:32:49 > 0:32:50and have a look at it anyway.

0:32:50 > 0:32:53Now, look, you spent £150. You spent half your budget.

0:32:53 > 0:32:56I think this is very diplomatic. David, did you invest it wisely?

0:32:56 > 0:33:00- I hope so.- I always try to. And I did promise you some furniture.

0:33:02 > 0:33:06- This is really clever. This is solid bronze, cast bronze.- Can I feel it?

0:33:06 > 0:33:08- Chinese, I feel.- Yeah.

0:33:08 > 0:33:11Decorated with cranes, which represent long life,

0:33:11 > 0:33:13longevity, good luck and all of that.

0:33:13 > 0:33:15Spin it round.

0:33:15 > 0:33:20- This is your highly polished side. - Yeah.- And it is a genuine mirror.

0:33:20 > 0:33:23- Yeah.- These things date back... - This is great.

0:33:23 > 0:33:26- ..thousands of years. - Yeah.- How old is this one?

0:33:26 > 0:33:28Yeah, good question. Late-19th, early 20th century.

0:33:28 > 0:33:30How much did you spend on it?

0:33:30 > 0:33:33- 30.- Ooh!- 30 quid?- Bloomin' heck! - Cheap and cheerful.

0:33:33 > 0:33:36Are you pleasantly surprised, girls?

0:33:36 > 0:33:37I am very surprised with that.

0:33:37 > 0:33:40- Well, look, you don't have to decide now.- No.

0:33:40 > 0:33:44But mirror, mirror on the wall, does Charles predict a profit?

0:33:44 > 0:33:46Let's have a look.

0:33:46 > 0:33:47Right, here we are.

0:33:47 > 0:33:50David invested in this rather lovely Chinese mirror.

0:33:50 > 0:33:51What's your thoughts?

0:33:51 > 0:33:54It's quite interesting. It's quite difficult to date bronze.

0:33:54 > 0:33:58I think it was made for export, made for the Western souvenir,

0:33:58 > 0:34:02to enjoy the riches and excesses of late trade with the Far East.

0:34:02 > 0:34:06- No, quite.- I love the prunus blossom, I love the storks...

0:34:06 > 0:34:08There's a turtle in there.

0:34:08 > 0:34:11..and the whole aesthetic of the clouds.

0:34:11 > 0:34:14- It just has that real rich style to it.- Good. OK.

0:34:14 > 0:34:17So what's your thoughts on value for that then, Charles?

0:34:17 > 0:34:21We've been quite cautious with a guide price of between £40 and £60.

0:34:21 > 0:34:24£40 and £60. OK. David will be delighted cos he paid £30 for it.

0:34:24 > 0:34:27- Good.- So you're predicting a profit on that for him,

0:34:27 > 0:34:30which he'll be thrilled with, I'm sure.

0:34:30 > 0:34:32- Absolutely.- So will you be wielding your gavel for us?

0:34:32 > 0:34:35- I will.- Brilliant. Well, we're in safe hands.- Can't wait.

0:34:35 > 0:34:36425.

0:34:36 > 0:34:38There we are...

0:34:38 > 0:34:39425 now.

0:34:39 > 0:34:4160. 5.

0:34:41 > 0:34:435, I'm bid. Sold.

0:34:43 > 0:34:46- How are you feeling? - Nervous. Excited.- Excited.

0:34:46 > 0:34:49All those emotions. Have you been to an auction before?

0:34:49 > 0:34:51- Never.- No.- Never ever?

0:34:51 > 0:34:53So you've decided that the very first time you came to

0:34:53 > 0:34:56an auction would be good to go on national television?

0:34:56 > 0:34:59- Yes.- Why not?- Loving your style. THEY LAUGH

0:34:59 > 0:35:01Now, we've got your first lot coming up.

0:35:01 > 0:35:06This is the Levi & Solomon Birmingham silver trinket box.

0:35:06 > 0:35:09And I'm bid here, 45. 50, I'm bid.

0:35:09 > 0:35:10Do I see 5 now?

0:35:10 > 0:35:1150. 5.

0:35:11 > 0:35:1360. 5.

0:35:13 > 0:35:15- Yes!- You're into profit.

0:35:15 > 0:35:16Asking for 80 now.

0:35:16 > 0:35:18Asking £80. 85.

0:35:18 > 0:35:2090. 95. 100.

0:35:20 > 0:35:23- '110.'- This is fantastic.

0:35:23 > 0:35:26At 110 bid. 120 bid. 130.

0:35:26 > 0:35:28I'll never doubt you again.

0:35:28 > 0:35:29140. 150.

0:35:29 > 0:35:31150 I'm bid.

0:35:31 > 0:35:35150. Go on. Make it £100 profit. This is fantastic.

0:35:35 > 0:35:37You're in. 160.

0:35:37 > 0:35:39THEY CHEER

0:35:39 > 0:35:42Fair warning. We've seen it at £160.

0:35:42 > 0:35:44Sold.

0:35:44 > 0:35:47- That is brilliant. - I'm speechless.- Marie!

0:35:47 > 0:35:51So you're £100 up on your first lot.

0:35:51 > 0:35:53Next, we've got this really sweet

0:35:53 > 0:35:55little Scottish silver box. Here it comes.

0:35:55 > 0:36:00We're now selling this gorgeous thistle trinket box.

0:36:00 > 0:36:02I'm bid, £20.

0:36:02 > 0:36:04I'm asking 5 now.

0:36:04 > 0:36:07Instant profit. Well done. Well done.

0:36:07 > 0:36:0825. 35.

0:36:08 > 0:36:0940. 45.

0:36:09 > 0:36:11This is fantastic. This is fantastic.

0:36:11 > 0:36:1245. 50.

0:36:12 > 0:36:1455, I'm bid.

0:36:14 > 0:36:15I'm asking now... 60 there.

0:36:15 > 0:36:17- Come on!- '60 with you, sir.'

0:36:17 > 0:36:18Fair warning.

0:36:18 > 0:36:20All out. Resell.
