0:00:07 > 0:00:10Today's Bargain Hunt comes from the Royal Highland Centre

0:00:10 > 0:00:12here in Edinburgh, and I've come across this,

0:00:12 > 0:00:16the very first self-help book ever written,

0:00:16 > 0:00:19by Scottish author Samuel Smiles in 1859.

0:00:19 > 0:00:24And he said the key to success in life was perseverance and hard work.

0:00:24 > 0:00:28Perfect advice for our teams today, so let's go Bargain Hunting.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01Here at the fair, there's a lot to choose from.

0:01:01 > 0:01:05The rules are simple - our teams have £300 and one hour

0:01:05 > 0:01:09to find those bargains and hopefully make a profit at auction.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11Let's take a peek at what's coming up.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16The Reds are dreaming of a Beatles reunion.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18He's obviously missing Ringo...

0:01:18 > 0:01:21He was part of a set, probably.

0:01:21 > 0:01:22It's all in the name, for the Blues.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24Here's one with my name on it.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26Now, would you believe it?

0:01:26 > 0:01:29And there's excitement at the auction.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31Unbelievable!

0:01:31 > 0:01:32Cannot...

0:01:32 > 0:01:3420 bid.

0:01:34 > 0:01:35Yeah!

0:01:37 > 0:01:40Well, more of that later. Let's meet our teams.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42We've got two teams of couples today.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44For the Reds, we've got Kelly and Paul,

0:01:44 > 0:01:47and for the Blues, we've got Lindsay and Scott.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49- Hello! ALL:- Hello.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53Now, Kelly, you guys met when you were studying at Glasgow University.

0:01:53 > 0:01:57Yes, so we actually met during our Masters programme in History.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00And Paul had asked me out a few times,

0:02:00 > 0:02:02I was a bit hesitant but we ended up going for coffee

0:02:02 > 0:02:04and one of the first things he actually mentioned

0:02:04 > 0:02:07was how much he enjoys visiting stately homes.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09And I just thought, "Oh, my gosh,

0:02:09 > 0:02:12"to find someone who has that same historical interest that I do,"

0:02:12 > 0:02:14because I really do love anything about the past,

0:02:14 > 0:02:18I just thought, "I'm never going to find someone else like this again."

0:02:18 > 0:02:21And we ended up chatting for hours and have been together ever since.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23That's just a fabulous story.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25Well, Paul, you're a musician, what instrument do you play?

0:02:25 > 0:02:27Guitar, I'm a guitarist.

0:02:27 > 0:02:29I've played in many bands over the years,

0:02:29 > 0:02:32from rock music to bluegrass to jazz.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34So, all range of things, I've done.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38So the guitarist, has that been a six-string or four-string?

0:02:38 > 0:02:40Six string, I can play a bit of a bass guitar

0:02:40 > 0:02:43but it's mainly guitar that I play.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46- The proper instrument, isn't it, the guitar?- Yes, exactly.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50- So, Kelly, you have a famous tattoo?- I do, yes.

0:02:50 > 0:02:51Designed by somebody?

0:02:51 > 0:02:53Yes, so a couple of years ago,

0:02:53 > 0:02:57I actually met Sir Paul McCartney and he, well, I asked him to

0:02:57 > 0:03:01draw me something to remember it by, and he drew a peace sign.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04And then my dad and I, actually he's a huge Beatles fan,

0:03:04 > 0:03:07- we actually went and got matching tattoos.- No!- Yes.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09- Is it somewhere where I can see it? - Yes, it is.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15Wow, look at that. There it is, the peace sign. Did it hurt?

0:03:15 > 0:03:17No, it didn't, actually.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20I was surprised because I think it's supposed to be a painful spot.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22Guys, what are your tactics going to be?

0:03:22 > 0:03:25Well, I think we both have quite a good historical knowledge

0:03:25 > 0:03:28of historical periods, so I think that will definitely help us.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31- Definitely putting a lot of faith in the experts.- I think so, yes.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34- Really?- A gamble here and there but we'll place our faith

0:03:34 > 0:03:35in the expert, I think.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38Well, best of luck. Let's meet the Blues.

0:03:38 > 0:03:41- Lindsay and Scott, how are you? - Very well.- Good.

0:03:41 > 0:03:44I hear this fair location, the Royal Highland Centre,

0:03:44 > 0:03:46has a very special place in your hearts?

0:03:46 > 0:03:50Yes, indeed. We go to the Royal Highland Show every year.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53It's an agricultural event where everybody gets together.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55We've known each other for 15 years

0:03:55 > 0:03:58and it's only the last two years we've got together,

0:03:58 > 0:04:01- and it was this location we got together.- Wow!

0:04:01 > 0:04:04- You have a fascinating job, working with animals.- Yes, yes.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08I'm a behaviourist. I mostly work with horses.

0:04:08 > 0:04:13We look at any behaviours that mostly could be problematic,

0:04:13 > 0:04:16and help horse owners identify where the problems are,

0:04:16 > 0:04:19and help with retraining programmes.

0:04:19 > 0:04:20It's very, very rewarding.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23- Yeah, it's amazing. It's great, yes.- Magical beasts.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25So, Scott, what do you do?

0:04:25 > 0:04:29Well, I'm a builder and joiner to trade, a local business.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31And you also love doing up classic cars?

0:04:31 > 0:04:35I do indeed. Me and my father have worked classic cars for years.

0:04:35 > 0:04:37I helped him do his classic cars

0:04:37 > 0:04:40and also my own classic cars as well, so thoroughly enjoy it.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43So, you two sound like a practical pair.

0:04:43 > 0:04:45What are your tactics going to be today?

0:04:45 > 0:04:49Well, I work with a charity grant so every penny counts,

0:04:49 > 0:04:52- so we're looking for value out there.- And what about you, Scott?

0:04:52 > 0:04:55I'm looking for something that's well put together.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58Something I can see that's had a bit of work involved in it put together.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00Well, it sounds like a plan, good luck.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03But before you go, you must have some money.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06- And I think the ladies are in charge today.- Thank you.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09- Kelly, there you are. Lindsay, there's £300 for you.- Thank you.

0:05:09 > 0:05:10Off you go, your experts await.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12Are they going to be stuck in the past

0:05:12 > 0:05:15or are they going to be horsing around? I can't wait to see.

0:05:17 > 0:05:22Our competitive couples need a couple of very talented experts.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25Hitting the high note for the Reds, it's Ben Cooper.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30And strumming her way to success for the Blues, it's Kate Bliss.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34Have you got any idea what you'd like to buy then, Paul?

0:05:34 > 0:05:38Because I love history, an item with some personal story behind it.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41Well, maybe something big and practical or I might go for

0:05:41 > 0:05:43something small and pretty, I just... I'm sure.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46Quite love the Victorian and Edwardian era.

0:05:46 > 0:05:47Maybe something a bit nicer looking.

0:05:47 > 0:05:49OK, it looks like we might have the odd battle.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52Also something military.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55Right, teams, time to start shopping.

0:05:55 > 0:05:59Let's head out and see what we can find. Come on, guys.

0:05:59 > 0:06:03It looks like pretty much anything is up for grabs with our teams,

0:06:03 > 0:06:04so let the battle commence.

0:06:05 > 0:06:09My advice is see things which talk to you.

0:06:11 > 0:06:14Anything grab you, Lindsay? What do you think?

0:06:14 > 0:06:17- No, nothing jumps out here. - Let's move on.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21It's not as easy as it looks.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24There's certainly a lot to choose from here.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27It looks like the Reds have spotted something already.

0:06:27 > 0:06:31And it's somewhere from either the Middle East or Far East.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34- Yeah, it looks kind of... - And it's been converted into a lamp.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37It was probably a vase or something for incense originally.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39It's a quirky-looking thing.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41- It's got £45 on it.- Mm-hm.

0:06:41 > 0:06:45I wouldn't honestly know where it would get at auction.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48- No, right, it can kind of go... - They can go either way.

0:06:48 > 0:06:50Maybe that's one to think about.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53But the Blues are being drawn to a bit of silver.

0:06:53 > 0:06:57- See anything you like?- Just looking at the nice silver.- Mm-hm.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00There's a little scent bottle there, perfume bottle.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03Is that your kind of thing, Lindsay?

0:07:03 > 0:07:05I like that kind of thing.

0:07:05 > 0:07:09But with a purpose. They have to do a job and look pretty.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11- Right, so it's got to be practical. - Yes.

0:07:11 > 0:07:15One thing I say about this is it is a little bit dented.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18- Yeah, which is a shame. - Lovely, I do like that.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23That damage might detract from the price at auction,

0:07:23 > 0:07:24so time to move on.

0:07:24 > 0:07:29And our history-loving Reds may have found something, well, old.

0:07:29 > 0:07:30Is that like a Celtic...?

0:07:30 > 0:07:33I did Celtic studies so that kind of just caught my eye.

0:07:33 > 0:07:34This is a trivet,

0:07:34 > 0:07:37it was sat by the fire to keep your kettle on and what have you.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40- OK, right.- It looks... Let's pick it up.

0:07:40 > 0:07:43- It looks like it's made out of copper.- Uh-huh.

0:07:43 > 0:07:47- We all know that fresh copper is that bright pink colour.- Yes.

0:07:47 > 0:07:51Some things are designed to be kept really highly-polished.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54Other things actually get much better as they build up

0:07:54 > 0:07:57a patina over time and this has really created

0:07:57 > 0:07:59- a lovely lustre to the surface. - Yeah!

0:07:59 > 0:08:01You're also when you're looking around here,

0:08:01 > 0:08:04- it's very much in the Arts & Crafts style.- Right.

0:08:04 > 0:08:08So, I reckon it dates to around about 1900, around about there.

0:08:08 > 0:08:10Right, exactly what I was looking for.

0:08:10 > 0:08:12What do you think would be a good price to get it for?

0:08:12 > 0:08:14Because I know it says 75.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16I would like to see it better than 65.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19Right, OK, so about 60, try?

0:08:19 > 0:08:21If you could... Have a word.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23See how you can do.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26- Obviously, be polite.- Yes. - Be friendly to the dealer.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28- Smile's on.- Of course!

0:08:28 > 0:08:30And just see what he might say he can do on it.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33Hello, hi, yes! Hello!

0:08:33 > 0:08:37- So, we're very interested in this, love the design and everything.- Yes.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40It's Celtic and great. What would be your best price on this?

0:08:40 > 0:08:42Well, you know, it's quite well-priced as it is and there's

0:08:42 > 0:08:45not a huge room for movement on it.

0:08:45 > 0:08:47But I could do £60.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50- Would you have 60?- I would be happy with 60.- 60 is good? Yeah?

0:08:50 > 0:08:53- Shake the man's hand. - OK, yes, that's excellent.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55- Thank you very much. - Thank you so much.

0:08:55 > 0:08:57Wow, these guys don't hang around.

0:08:57 > 0:09:01Their first item is in the bag with just 12 minutes on the clock.

0:09:01 > 0:09:03And it looks like the Blues

0:09:03 > 0:09:05have found something close to Scott's heart.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08You're a car man, aren't you, Scott? Or a motorbike man.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11- Both.- Both? You like your classic cars as well, don't you?

0:09:11 > 0:09:13- There's quite a few in there, I see.- Hmm.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16I can see there's a couple other Dinkies in there and Dinkies

0:09:16 > 0:09:19are selling incredibly well at the moment, actually.

0:09:19 > 0:09:24What you're looking for with Dinky toys is condition and rare models.

0:09:24 > 0:09:26Now, the rare models sometimes need a bit of research

0:09:26 > 0:09:29- but we can tell straightaway about the condition of things.- OK.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32- The one I'm looking at there is the box.- Yes.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36Because that's a little bit later, actually. But it has...

0:09:36 > 0:09:39- Original box.- ..its original box.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41So, what have we got on there?

0:09:41 > 0:09:45- Dinky Ford Mercury, Cougar. - It's American.

0:09:45 > 0:09:48Yeah, boxed and in mint condition.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51What kind of money is on that anyway? Does it say?

0:09:51 > 0:09:53So, we've got £40 on there. Hmm.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57Let's put that one to one side for a minute.

0:09:58 > 0:10:01While the Blues continue to rummage,

0:10:01 > 0:10:04it looks like something else has caught the eye of the Reds.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06This little...that little scale.

0:10:06 > 0:10:08- Those are postal scales.- OK, right.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10- Ten years ago...- Mm.

0:10:10 > 0:10:12..you would have seen those on a stand,

0:10:12 > 0:10:15- all polished up and gleaming, for £125.- Right.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18But they are one of those things which has been affected.

0:10:18 > 0:10:22- Fashions change. - Not as popular as they were?- No.

0:10:22 > 0:10:24They're asking £42.

0:10:24 > 0:10:28- I mean, they're a fair price but they're nothing...- Maybe not, yes.

0:10:29 > 0:10:32It's a no to the scales but back to the toy stall.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34The Blues have found a rustic gem.

0:10:36 > 0:10:39Is that a Corgi...toy?

0:10:39 > 0:10:41Made in Great Britain, Land Rover.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44So, Corgi rather than Dinky.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46Is the value still there with Corgi?

0:10:46 > 0:10:50It is, it's a little bit later than the Dinky ones.

0:10:50 > 0:10:52That's quite nice, how much is that? £10?

0:10:52 > 0:10:54We can make them an offer, see what they could do.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57- I mean, if the right collector is there at auction.- Yes.

0:10:57 > 0:10:58- They'd buy that?- We might do well.

0:11:00 > 0:11:02What can you do on that one for us?

0:11:04 > 0:11:05What would be your rock-bottom?

0:11:05 > 0:11:08£8, it's marked up already at 10.

0:11:09 > 0:11:10What were you thinking?

0:11:10 > 0:11:13Erm, think about £5, what do you think?

0:11:13 > 0:11:17Well, if you get it for £5, that would be good.

0:11:17 > 0:11:21Erm, £5 is the general feeling. How is that with you?

0:11:21 > 0:11:25- Could you do it just for us? - Yeah.- You're a star.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27Thank you very much indeed.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29Brilliant, first purchase, guys.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31This team really are Bargain Hunters.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34That's their first item for just a fiver.

0:11:34 > 0:11:3817 minutes in and both teams are doing really well.

0:11:38 > 0:11:42Meanwhile, the Reds have uncovered a legend of the pop world.

0:11:43 > 0:11:46- Can you recognise him?- Is that...? - Oh, look at that!

0:11:46 > 0:11:49I think it looks like a Beatle, probably Paul McCartney.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52- It does, doesn't it?- Should we have a look?- Yeah!- Let's have a look.

0:11:53 > 0:11:59- I'm trying to work out what that actually says.- 15... Oh, yes.- £55.

0:11:59 > 0:12:01And it's Kelsboro Ware.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03Hmm.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05- Now, he's designed to hang on the wall.- OK.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08He's obviously missing Ringo, George...

0:12:08 > 0:12:10He's part of a set, probably.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12He would have been part of the full set.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14- You wanted something which is historical.- Yeah!

0:12:14 > 0:12:17Now this isn't exactly ancient history, this is modern history.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20- It matches my tattoo, so...- Indeed.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23Oh, I'd forgotten all about your tattoo for a minute.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25Yes, a little personal connection! You're a musician.

0:12:25 > 0:12:27Where did my brain go?

0:12:27 > 0:12:29- I think...- I think we should speak to the dealer.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32Speak to the dealer and see what they can do on it, OK?

0:12:32 > 0:12:33Right.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36While the Reds try to work it out with the dealer,

0:12:36 > 0:12:38let's see what the Blues are up to.

0:12:39 > 0:12:43- I love that, actually.- I do, I was looking at that myself, it's lovely.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46That's sweet. Breathe in a bit for me, I think.

0:12:47 > 0:12:49I can see you in that, Kate.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51Oh, and I think I'd look good in that.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55But how are the Reds getting on?

0:12:55 > 0:12:57Is it time to twist and shout?

0:12:57 > 0:12:58See what I did there?

0:12:58 > 0:13:02I'm just wondering what your best price would be for this item.

0:13:02 > 0:13:04- 40 quid.- 40!

0:13:04 > 0:13:07I think that's a really fair deal.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10I think you'd be very cruel to actually try and...

0:13:10 > 0:13:11Yeah, we're not going to push it.

0:13:11 > 0:13:14- I might collapse. - Thank you very much.

0:13:14 > 0:13:15That's great.

0:13:15 > 0:13:17That could have been a hard day's night,

0:13:17 > 0:13:19but they got a great buy there.

0:13:19 > 0:13:2225 minutes in and the Reds are storming ahead

0:13:22 > 0:13:25with their second item of the day.

0:13:25 > 0:13:27I've got to admit, I am really pleased with them

0:13:27 > 0:13:30at the moment because they've been decisive.

0:13:30 > 0:13:33They found something Scottish, that trivet is just lovely.

0:13:33 > 0:13:35And then, they wanted something historical.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38But we've tied it in also with Kelly's tattoo.

0:13:38 > 0:13:42I mean, who'd have thought that we'd find a little Paul McCartney?

0:13:42 > 0:13:45And I think, you know, there's some real hope. One shop to go.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47I'm going to head off.

0:13:48 > 0:13:50While the teams continue their shopping,

0:13:50 > 0:13:54it's time to take a break. And I've come across a little toy of my own.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04I have something really rather fabulous to show you.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07It's from the 20th century and it's a very rare toy,

0:14:07 > 0:14:09made by the firm Britain's.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13And Britain's are most famous for their lead soldiers.

0:14:13 > 0:14:15However, in between the Wars,

0:14:15 > 0:14:18the First World War and the Second World War, the demand for

0:14:18 > 0:14:22lead soldiers sort of waned, so they had to develop other toys.

0:14:22 > 0:14:26And they may have been farmyard animals, zoos, gardens,

0:14:26 > 0:14:31but one of the rarest subjects they did was the circus.

0:14:31 > 0:14:38And here I have a boxed flying trapeze from that very own series.

0:14:38 > 0:14:40If I open it up...

0:14:40 > 0:14:44There it is, almost as crisp as the day it was made.

0:14:44 > 0:14:49We've got a flying fairy with a clown and its original umbrella.

0:14:49 > 0:14:53It does work and I will need a little bit of help

0:14:53 > 0:14:54to show you how it works.

0:14:54 > 0:14:57Here's our Rhys, our researcher.

0:14:57 > 0:15:00If you can hold this bit of wire.

0:15:00 > 0:15:02What I'm going to do is, I've got the lead toy here.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06The trapeze, I'm going to open the umbrella.

0:15:07 > 0:15:10That goes in the top of the clown.

0:15:10 > 0:15:12Now, if we just carefully...

0:15:14 > 0:15:16..let this go down onto there.

0:15:17 > 0:15:20As you can see, as all the pulleys work,

0:15:20 > 0:15:23and it goes backwards and forwards,

0:15:23 > 0:15:26the umbrella twists and turns at the same time.

0:15:26 > 0:15:28It's just so charming.

0:15:29 > 0:15:33To have the original wire, the original box

0:15:33 > 0:15:37still survive between those dates, 1936 and 1939,

0:15:37 > 0:15:40this is an absolute treat to see.

0:15:40 > 0:15:42So, what's this worth?

0:15:42 > 0:15:44If you bought one back in 1938,

0:15:44 > 0:15:47it would have cost you around £1.50 in today's money.

0:15:47 > 0:15:51This one recently sold for £500.

0:15:51 > 0:15:53Now, that's a class act.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07Time to get back to the shopping, and with 2-1 to the Reds, both teams

0:16:07 > 0:16:12are scanning the fair and nothing is escaping their eagle eyes.

0:16:12 > 0:16:14The Blues are onto something rather cool.

0:16:16 > 0:16:18- Oh, I like it.- Do you like?- Yeah!

0:16:18 > 0:16:22Quite industrial, which is very in at the moment. What do you think?

0:16:22 > 0:16:26We've got the remains of a label there, which I think is Benjamin.

0:16:26 > 0:16:29That bodes well, it's my son's name, so it's got to be good.

0:16:29 > 0:16:30Got to be good!

0:16:30 > 0:16:33I love the industrialness of it, in the colour as well.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36I think it's something quite retro looking,

0:16:36 > 0:16:39it would look great in a modern kitchen.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41So, we've got £30 on there.

0:16:41 > 0:16:44- What would you pay for that?- £20.

0:16:44 > 0:16:47- Mm-hm.- Maybe I would say 20. - £20, aye.

0:16:47 > 0:16:51- Yeah? Well, I think you should go and flutter your eyelids.- OK.

0:16:51 > 0:16:54- And do your best.- OK, let's try.

0:16:54 > 0:16:57Hi! We're interested in your lamp here.

0:16:58 > 0:17:00You have 30 on it.

0:17:00 > 0:17:03Would you take 20 for it?

0:17:03 > 0:17:06I don't take 20 but I can do 25.

0:17:06 > 0:17:07What do you think?

0:17:07 > 0:17:10I can see that doing really well.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12Enamel ware is in at the moment.

0:17:12 > 0:17:14It's a great colour, I love it.

0:17:14 > 0:17:17And I think for 25, I can see that doing well at auction.

0:17:17 > 0:17:19Yeah, I really can.

0:17:19 > 0:17:21- OK then, we'll take it.- 25? Lovely.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24Let's do it, thank you so much for your help. Great!

0:17:24 > 0:17:27Well done, Blues. We're only halfway through the hour

0:17:27 > 0:17:30and they've secured their second item. I love a budget buy.

0:17:32 > 0:17:35They haven't spent much money, £30 for two.

0:17:35 > 0:17:38But the danger here, I think, is when they're doing so well,

0:17:38 > 0:17:41is with the third piece, do I either spend too much depending on

0:17:41 > 0:17:44what it's worth, or to go for something really off-the-wall

0:17:44 > 0:17:46which isn't going to sell very well at auction?

0:17:46 > 0:17:50We've just got to stay on the right track and we could do really well.

0:17:52 > 0:17:53As they head off to find item three,

0:17:53 > 0:17:56the Reds have got Ben onto the subject of jewellery.

0:17:58 > 0:18:01I don't know how to tell the difference between

0:18:01 > 0:18:04- tacky kind of jewellery and... - It's a hard one.

0:18:04 > 0:18:08With jewellery, there's what's classed as your fine jewellery

0:18:08 > 0:18:10with your precious metals and precious stones

0:18:10 > 0:18:11and semiprecious stones.

0:18:11 > 0:18:15Obviously, you have your gold and your silver and obviously, platinum.

0:18:15 > 0:18:20Now with those, because they're an expensive core metal,

0:18:20 > 0:18:23then normally you'd use an expensive stone to go with.

0:18:25 > 0:18:27While the Reds discuss sparkly things,

0:18:27 > 0:18:30over to the Blues, who have found something rather fishy.

0:18:32 > 0:18:35This is an interesting one. Do you feel that, Lindsay?

0:18:35 > 0:18:38- What strikes you about that? - Heavy.- Really heavy.

0:18:38 > 0:18:41- So, you think it looks like it's carved wood.- Yes.

0:18:41 > 0:18:43Turn it up, you see a bit of a grain going on there,

0:18:43 > 0:18:45feel the weight of it.

0:18:45 > 0:18:47- It's actually made of resin.- Wow.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50- Not wood at all.- Oh, yeah?

0:18:50 > 0:18:53But if you look at the bottom, that would fool me.

0:18:53 > 0:18:57- Decorative, most decorative thing. - It is.- But not wood.

0:18:57 > 0:18:59OK, let's go down there.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02They don't like it enough to buy it, so now it's back to the Reds,

0:19:02 > 0:19:04who've moved onto boxes.

0:19:05 > 0:19:08I like that box. Chinese stuff does quite well, doesn't it?

0:19:08 > 0:19:10Chinese is very popular at the moment.

0:19:10 > 0:19:13- I mean, it's made originally as a cigarette box.- Right.

0:19:13 > 0:19:15You've got that kind of lining.

0:19:15 > 0:19:17There's a little story, so it says...

0:19:19 > 0:19:23- "To Stan, from Jim. Hong Kong, 1946."- Oh!

0:19:23 > 0:19:25Whoever Stan and Jim were, I don't know.

0:19:25 > 0:19:29And personal stuff, does that have an effect on the price?

0:19:29 > 0:19:32It can have an effect when things

0:19:32 > 0:19:35have got sort of engraving on them and names and this.

0:19:35 > 0:19:38What's quite fun is this is obviously a very personal thing.

0:19:38 > 0:19:39Do you like it?

0:19:39 > 0:19:42If it would do well at auction, I would.

0:19:42 > 0:19:44Well, we can certainly ask...

0:19:44 > 0:19:46We can certainly see what the gentleman can do on the price.

0:19:46 > 0:19:51- What can you do on this one, sir? - How much is on it?- You've got 75.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54I'll do it for...45.

0:19:55 > 0:19:58- 45.- Now that is a very, very generous discount.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01- It is very generous.- I wasn't expecting that at all, so...

0:20:01 > 0:20:05- Yeah, that's quite, what do you think?- What do you think?

0:20:05 > 0:20:08- Yeah, I quite like it.- I'm putting the ball in your court, guys.

0:20:08 > 0:20:10- I think, you know...- Yeah.

0:20:10 > 0:20:12The gentleman is being very, very generous.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15I think he is, that's a great offer. Buy it? Yeah, let's buy it.

0:20:15 > 0:20:18- You're going to go for it?- Yeah, why not?- Thank you very much, sir.

0:20:18 > 0:20:20- Pleasure.- Thank you.

0:20:20 > 0:20:22- Well, we're done. - Let's go for it.- Three items.

0:20:22 > 0:20:24- I know. - And we've got time left over.

0:20:24 > 0:20:27Blues can be doing whatever and we can go and have a cuppa.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31The box is in the bag and they have 20 minutes to spare.

0:20:31 > 0:20:33Time for tea and a chinwag.

0:20:34 > 0:20:37The Blues still have to find their final item

0:20:37 > 0:20:39and it looks like Scott has spotted something.

0:20:39 > 0:20:41Has he been here before in another life?

0:20:42 > 0:20:45- Wow!- This one's got my name on it. - Now, would you believe it?

0:20:45 > 0:20:49- I don't believe that.- Somebody knew you were coming, Scott.- Very nice.

0:20:49 > 0:20:52- The thing about these cases is they tell a story, don't they?- Yes.

0:20:52 > 0:20:56And you've got lovely labels here from where it's been -

0:20:56 > 0:20:58Algiers, St George.

0:20:58 > 0:21:00Let's have a look inside.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03You've got the leather straps there.

0:21:04 > 0:21:06Can you open it up?

0:21:08 > 0:21:10- No.- Maybe there should be a key.

0:21:10 > 0:21:13It is a bit shabby, I have to say.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16- It's seen a bit of life, hasn't it? - That's what I like about it.

0:21:16 > 0:21:20That's what you like about it. And it makes a great coffee table.

0:21:20 > 0:21:24Because that's the kind of thing that the market loves

0:21:24 > 0:21:25as a furnishing piece.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28- Hi, there.- Hi!- We've spotted your trunk here.

0:21:28 > 0:21:29How much is it?

0:21:29 > 0:21:35I'm selling on behalf of someone but we're asking 70. Maybe for 50.

0:21:35 > 0:21:38Could you do it anything better than that because it's locked?

0:21:39 > 0:21:42- I've got to ask them. That'll do?- Yeah, sure.

0:21:42 > 0:21:45- OK, we'll have a think too. - I'll see...- Lovely, thank you.

0:21:47 > 0:21:48Now, some people call this shabby,

0:21:48 > 0:21:53and others call it shabby chic, but does this stall have more to offer?

0:21:53 > 0:21:55- What do you think about that one?- Well...

0:21:55 > 0:21:58And actually, if you're going to use it as a coffee table,

0:21:58 > 0:22:00- this one's probably a better height.- Yes.- I agree.

0:22:00 > 0:22:04- So, let's have a look inside as well.- I really like that.

0:22:04 > 0:22:06I like that too, yes. I do like it.

0:22:06 > 0:22:09- Well, I think we should find out the price.- OK, let's do that.

0:22:09 > 0:22:12The dealer's here with some prices.

0:22:12 > 0:22:13That's 50 for that one.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16- But it's locked.- Yes. - And this one's 70?

0:22:16 > 0:22:19It's had a little bit of repair there.

0:22:19 > 0:22:20I mean, could you do anything about that

0:22:20 > 0:22:22because the condition isn't so great?

0:22:24 > 0:22:26It's just, I was told 70.

0:22:26 > 0:22:29Were you? So, it's 70 or nothing?

0:22:29 > 0:22:32OK, well, there we have it, guys.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35I have to tell you, we've got about three minutes left.

0:22:37 > 0:22:41OK, guys, it's decision time. This is your last call.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43What do you think, Kate?

0:22:43 > 0:22:46- I think that's a bit high for an auction price.- Yes, I think so too.

0:22:46 > 0:22:49I think if you go for the 50, you take the gamble,

0:22:49 > 0:22:52- you hope there's treasure inside.- I agree, yes.

0:22:52 > 0:22:56- His name's Scott, it's got to be a good omen.- 50.- You happy?

0:22:56 > 0:22:59- We're happy.- Definitely.- Thank you. - Thank you very much indeed.

0:22:59 > 0:23:02GONG Time's up, teams.

0:23:02 > 0:23:04- In the nick of time!- Perfect timing!

0:23:04 > 0:23:06But what a great ending, hey?

0:23:06 > 0:23:08I don't know about you, but I need a sit down!

0:23:08 > 0:23:11Let's remind ourselves what the Reds bought.

0:23:11 > 0:23:13Our history-loving duo snapped up

0:23:13 > 0:23:16the Scottish Arts & Crafts trivet for £60.

0:23:17 > 0:23:21He wants to hold your hand but can he deliver a profit?

0:23:21 > 0:23:23The Paul McCartney ceramic was £40.

0:23:25 > 0:23:28And will the Chinese copper dragon breathe fire at the auction?

0:23:28 > 0:23:31It was £45.

0:23:31 > 0:23:34- So, guys, was that exciting? - It was, great!- Fantastic.

0:23:34 > 0:23:37Kelly, may I ask you what's your favourite item?

0:23:37 > 0:23:40I think I really like the Celtic Arts & Crafts trivet.

0:23:40 > 0:23:42- I think that was a really good buy, yes.- What about you, Paul?

0:23:42 > 0:23:45It had to be the Chinese box for me. Fantastic.

0:23:45 > 0:23:48Paul, what's going to bring the biggest profit?

0:23:48 > 0:23:51- I'm not being biased but I think the box.- So, the box is your choice?

0:23:51 > 0:23:52- It is my choice, yes. - Oh, I see that.

0:23:52 > 0:23:54What about you, Kelly?

0:23:54 > 0:23:57I think that Beatles head might do well if there's any Beatles fans

0:23:57 > 0:23:59- out there, you never know. - Beatles head?

0:23:59 > 0:24:01- Yeah, it's good, I think so. - How much did you spend, then?

0:24:01 > 0:24:04We spent £145 altogether.

0:24:04 > 0:24:06So, that leaves Ben with 155.

0:24:06 > 0:24:08- Who's got that out of you two? - I do, there you go.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11Naturally, it would be you, wouldn't it? Woman's in charge.

0:24:11 > 0:24:14So, Ben, here's £155.

0:24:14 > 0:24:15What are you going to spend it on?

0:24:15 > 0:24:17- We did look at some jewellery.- Yes.

0:24:17 > 0:24:20So, I think I might possibly go down the sparkle route,

0:24:20 > 0:24:23- but then again, I might end up with some rust.- Sounds good.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25Sounds like a plan, Ben.

0:24:25 > 0:24:27While Ben goes and finds some sparkles,

0:24:27 > 0:24:29let's remind ourselves what the Blues bought.

0:24:30 > 0:24:34Can this 1950s Corgi Land Rover drive the Blues to a profit?

0:24:34 > 0:24:36It cost a mere £5.

0:24:39 > 0:24:42Will the industrial lampshade they bought for £25

0:24:42 > 0:24:44shine bright at the auction?

0:24:46 > 0:24:50Scott found his namesake with this well-travelled featherweight trunk.

0:24:50 > 0:24:53Is it a good omen? It cost £50.

0:24:54 > 0:24:58- Scott and Lindsay, was that fun? - Yes, great fun.- Great fun.- Yeah?

0:24:58 > 0:25:03- Kate, was it fun?- Clockwork, absolute clockwork.- Really?

0:25:03 > 0:25:05No, they were fantastic.

0:25:05 > 0:25:09So, Scott, tell me, what's your favourite item?

0:25:09 > 0:25:12First item I chose was the wee Series 1 Land Rover.

0:25:12 > 0:25:16- OK, that's your favourite item. - That's my favourite item, love it.

0:25:16 > 0:25:20- Lindsay, what's yours? - 1930s-style lampshade.- Yes.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22Love that, so...

0:25:22 > 0:25:24Good, those are your favourite items so, Scott, let me ask you,

0:25:24 > 0:25:26what's going to bring the biggest profit?

0:25:26 > 0:25:30I know we didn't spend much on it but I think the wee Land Rover will.

0:25:30 > 0:25:33The wee Land Rover? Oh, good. What about you, Lindsay?

0:25:33 > 0:25:36I'm agreeing with Scott, I think that's our winner, that one.

0:25:36 > 0:25:38- The Land Rover. - Yeah, the Land Rover.

0:25:38 > 0:25:41So, OK, you two, how much did you spend?

0:25:41 > 0:25:43- £80.- What?- Only 80, yes!

0:25:43 > 0:25:4480! Kate!

0:25:44 > 0:25:47I tried, I tried. Honestly, believe me.

0:25:47 > 0:25:52- That's £220, who's got that left? - I've got it here.- £220.

0:25:52 > 0:25:54- Look at that! - What are you going to do with that?

0:25:54 > 0:25:57You know what? I'm going to have lots of fun, that's for sure.

0:25:57 > 0:25:59Spend it!

0:25:59 > 0:26:03While Kate goes off and spends £220, we're off to the auction.

0:26:12 > 0:26:15So, it's been a hop, skip and a jump from the fair in Edinburgh

0:26:15 > 0:26:19to here with Anita at Great Western Auctions in Glasgow.

0:26:19 > 0:26:21It's lovely to have you here, Thomas.

0:26:21 > 0:26:23Now, we're going to start with the Reds.

0:26:23 > 0:26:28Paul and Kelly, their first item I adore, it's this lovely trivet.

0:26:28 > 0:26:31Mm-hm. Well, it's Celtic revival.

0:26:31 > 0:26:35And at the end of the 19th, beginning of the 20th century, the

0:26:35 > 0:26:41Celtic revival was big in Scotland and particularly in Glasgow.

0:26:41 > 0:26:47And this is a lovely thing, with that marvellous interlaced motif.

0:26:47 > 0:26:49So, lots of buyers for this. What's your estimate?

0:26:49 > 0:26:52Hopefully, estimate 80 to 120.

0:26:52 > 0:26:5480-120, £60 paid.

0:26:54 > 0:26:58Onto their second item, Sir Paul McCartney.

0:26:58 > 0:27:01- If we had four of them, Thomas... - The Fab Four.

0:27:01 > 0:27:04- ..it would be a different thing. - Yeah, the Fab Four!

0:27:04 > 0:27:08- And you've just got Sir Paul there. - We've just got Paul here.

0:27:08 > 0:27:11- What's your estimate? - Estimate on that, 50 to 100.

0:27:11 > 0:27:13I've made it wide.

0:27:13 > 0:27:17So, they've paid £40. I think that's quite good, good estimate.

0:27:17 > 0:27:22Right, their third and final item is this Chinese copper box

0:27:22 > 0:27:24and it's got an interesting inscription on it.

0:27:24 > 0:27:25What do you make of that?

0:27:25 > 0:27:31I, I love this box and I quite like the inscription.

0:27:31 > 0:27:36"To Stan, from Jim." And it's 1946.

0:27:36 > 0:27:41It makes me wonder who Stan and Jim were

0:27:41 > 0:27:45and what they were doing in Hong Kong in 1946.

0:27:45 > 0:27:48So, it's a positive for me but it might be

0:27:48 > 0:27:50a negative for lots of people.

0:27:50 > 0:27:54It's a positive for you, so therefore, your valuation is...?

0:27:54 > 0:27:5560 to 100.

0:27:55 > 0:27:5860 to 100, well, £45 paid.

0:27:58 > 0:28:01Well, Anita, it's looking immensely positive for this team here.

0:28:01 > 0:28:04They might need their bonus buy, they might not.

0:28:04 > 0:28:05But let's take a look at it anyway.

0:28:07 > 0:28:13- You gave the dear old Ben Cooper £155.- Yeah!

0:28:13 > 0:28:16Ben, what have you got under that satin silk?

0:28:16 > 0:28:20Well, I went on a mission to try and find some jewellery.

0:28:20 > 0:28:23- Right, yes.- So, this is what...

0:28:23 > 0:28:26- I found.- Ooh! - Oh, that's beautiful.- Wow!

0:28:26 > 0:28:28- It's very you, isn't it? - That is, I like it.

0:28:28 > 0:28:30I thought it was going to be kind of you.

0:28:30 > 0:28:33It's made by the designer Charles Horner.

0:28:33 > 0:28:37And when you look on the back, there's the nice clear stamp,

0:28:37 > 0:28:42CH for Charles Horner, and it's hallmarked, to Chester, 1923.

0:28:42 > 0:28:46And it's very late but it is still in the Art Nouveau style.

0:28:46 > 0:28:48- So, how much did you spend? - What do you reckon?

0:28:50 > 0:28:52I'd say about £100, maybe?

0:28:52 > 0:28:54I paid 30.

0:28:54 > 0:28:56- £30!- Wow, wow.

0:28:56 > 0:28:57That's a great, good job!

0:28:59 > 0:29:02How much is it going to make at auction, do you think?

0:29:02 > 0:29:06Well, hopefully, he's very much really popular at the moment

0:29:06 > 0:29:11and I'm hoping somewhere in the region of £80, possibly a bit more.

0:29:11 > 0:29:14- Fingers crossed.- That's great! - You love it, don't you?

0:29:14 > 0:29:16It's a very nice piece.

0:29:16 > 0:29:18Look, you don't have to make that decision now.

0:29:18 > 0:29:22But for the audience at home, here's what the auctioneer thinks.

0:29:22 > 0:29:25So, Anita, I've got their bonus buy here.

0:29:25 > 0:29:28It's in my pocket, it's coming out, it's a rather nice box.

0:29:28 > 0:29:31- A precious little item. - It's a precious little item.

0:29:31 > 0:29:33I think it is rather delightful. Now, what do you make of it?

0:29:33 > 0:29:36- Well, it's Charles Horner.- Yeah.

0:29:36 > 0:29:40And Charles Horner, that wonderful Halifax jeweller,

0:29:40 > 0:29:44is the name in Art Nouveau jewellery.

0:29:44 > 0:29:49People will like this because it has this lovely romantic, Thomas,

0:29:49 > 0:29:51heart-shaped green stone.

0:29:51 > 0:29:56- What's your estimate? - 60 to 100.- £30 paid!

0:29:56 > 0:29:59- For Charles Horner. - That's amazing, isn't it?

0:29:59 > 0:30:02Well, look. Right, onto the Blues are now.

0:30:02 > 0:30:06Blues, we've got Lindsay and Scott and their first item

0:30:06 > 0:30:09was something which I see a lot of, these Corgi cars.

0:30:09 > 0:30:11What do you think about the Land Rover?

0:30:11 > 0:30:17When I look at that, Thomas, I can see that it has been played with

0:30:17 > 0:30:23and that little item has made a wee boy very, very happy.

0:30:23 > 0:30:28And there will be some big boys at the sale who will want to be

0:30:28 > 0:30:34taken back to the time when they played with this type of thing.

0:30:34 > 0:30:39- Your estimate?- I put 20 to 30, just because I loved it.

0:30:39 > 0:30:42And you know, these guys have been mean and paid a fiver.

0:30:42 > 0:30:44That was a good buy for a fiver.

0:30:44 > 0:30:49Right, now moving on to the enamel light fitting,

0:30:49 > 0:30:50what do you think of that?

0:30:50 > 0:30:53Well, it's Benjamin and that's a very good name.

0:30:53 > 0:30:59When you think of interior decoration these days, Thomas,

0:30:59 > 0:31:03lighting is very, very important.

0:31:03 > 0:31:07And today's style is industrial lighting

0:31:07 > 0:31:11and that is exactly what we have here.

0:31:11 > 0:31:14- What's your estimate? - Estimate on that is 30 to 60.

0:31:14 > 0:31:17Well, they paid 25.

0:31:17 > 0:31:2225, well, for a piece of 20th-century design,

0:31:22 > 0:31:24I think 25 is cheap.

0:31:24 > 0:31:26Their last item is the trunk.

0:31:26 > 0:31:29We can't miss it, we've got to talk about it, there it is.

0:31:29 > 0:31:31This trunk has travelled.

0:31:31 > 0:31:34This trunk has had a life!

0:31:34 > 0:31:40This trunk is not really in very great condition, but...

0:31:40 > 0:31:42One of the things that I do like about it is

0:31:42 > 0:31:45it's a featherweight trunk.

0:31:45 > 0:31:49So, this was a state-of-the-art trunk when it was made.

0:31:49 > 0:31:50So, your estimate?

0:31:50 > 0:31:53I put 50 to 80 and I actually might have been

0:31:53 > 0:31:55a wee bit generous on that.

0:31:55 > 0:31:59£50 paid, I think you've been generous.

0:31:59 > 0:32:01Well, it's a bit touch-and-go with this team,

0:32:01 > 0:32:03they may need their bonus buy, they may not.

0:32:03 > 0:32:04But let's have a look at it.

0:32:05 > 0:32:07Lindsay and Scott,

0:32:07 > 0:32:10you've spent nothing and you left

0:32:10 > 0:32:15our lovely beautiful Kate with £220!

0:32:15 > 0:32:19- Kate, what did you do with that? - Well, you guys were such fun.

0:32:19 > 0:32:21You bought such a variety of objects.

0:32:21 > 0:32:24So, I've gone for something completely different again.

0:32:25 > 0:32:28- Oh!- And I have bought you a little hip flask.

0:32:28 > 0:32:31Just the kind of thing, Lindsay, you want in the pocket

0:32:31 > 0:32:33when you're out on the horse.

0:32:33 > 0:32:34Very handy.

0:32:34 > 0:32:37It's faceted glass, they've gone to the trouble of bevelling it,

0:32:37 > 0:32:39faceting it all the way round.

0:32:39 > 0:32:43You've got a little silver-plated rather than silver mount

0:32:43 > 0:32:46to the base, which of course pulls off,

0:32:46 > 0:32:50and you could use it as a little cup, if you wanted to. Very handy.

0:32:50 > 0:32:53- I love it.- It's beautiful, yes. - Do you want to have a little handle?

0:32:53 > 0:32:56- Yes.- I love the scrollwork on it, it's beautiful,

0:32:56 > 0:32:59and you just see with the glass, it's lovely as well.

0:32:59 > 0:33:01OK, how much was it?

0:33:01 > 0:33:04- 25!- Wow!- Not too bad.

0:33:04 > 0:33:06What do you reckon that would fetch then, at auction?

0:33:06 > 0:33:10I think here in Glasgow, it's got to be worth £50 of anybody's money.

0:33:10 > 0:33:13I would really hope it would do that at least.

0:33:13 > 0:33:16You don't have to make the decision now,

0:33:16 > 0:33:19but for the audience at home, here's what the auctioneer thinks.

0:33:20 > 0:33:22The hip flask, what did you think about that?

0:33:22 > 0:33:26I think it's a very elegant little hip flask.

0:33:26 > 0:33:30If we look at the delicate engraving,

0:33:30 > 0:33:33it has a feminine look about it and I particularly liked

0:33:33 > 0:33:39this faceted glass at the top, so it's a pretty and elegant thing.

0:33:39 > 0:33:42- So, Anita, what's your estimate on this?- Estimate, 40 to 80.

0:33:42 > 0:33:47- 40 to 80, Kate's been marvellous and spend £25.- Right.
