0:00:02 > 0:00:06Oh, there's nothing quite like waking up in a tent,

0:00:06 > 0:00:10stepping out onto the long, green grass and breathing in that

0:00:10 > 0:00:15fresh country air here in beautiful Builth Wells, in Mid Wales.

0:00:15 > 0:00:18Not only is it a great place for a spot of camping,

0:00:18 > 0:00:22it's also a great site for our Reds and Blues to hunt out some

0:00:22 > 0:00:26bargains as there's a huge antiques fair taking place here today.

0:00:26 > 0:00:30So with that in mind, I don't know what we're waiting for -

0:00:30 > 0:00:31let's go bargain hunting.

0:00:57 > 0:01:01Every single corner of the Royal Welsh Showground here is

0:01:01 > 0:01:04bursting with antique stalls and it's not just outside.

0:01:04 > 0:01:08There are two exhibition halls and eight undercover buildings for our

0:01:08 > 0:01:12teams to make their way around in just 60 minutes.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15So it will be interesting to see how the Reds and Blues spend

0:01:15 > 0:01:19their £300 and which items they bring back with them.

0:01:19 > 0:01:20Let's see what's in store.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25Coming up on today's show, we have one leading lady...

0:01:25 > 0:01:27Whatever you like, we'll buy...

0:01:27 > 0:01:29- As long as it's OK with you. - ..within reason.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32- ..two excited ladies... BOTH:- Oh!

0:01:32 > 0:01:36..and by the auction, the excitement keeps on building for the Reds...

0:01:36 > 0:01:39- One more.- Go on, one more.- Go on.

0:01:39 > 0:01:41- ..and the Blues.- YAY!

0:01:43 > 0:01:45But that's all for later on.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48It's time now to meet our teams and, for the Reds today, we have

0:01:48 > 0:01:51married couple Christine and Mike and, for the Blues,

0:01:51 > 0:01:53we have friends Mary and Helen.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55- Welcome, everyone. Hello! TEAMS:- Hello!

0:01:55 > 0:01:58That was great! Lovely to see you all.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01Going to start with the Reds and I'm coming straight to you, Christine.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03Firstly, congratulations are in order.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06You've recently celebrated your golden wedding anniversary.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09That's lovely! So now I want to know how you met.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12- We've known each other for 55 years.- Wow.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14We've been married for 52 years.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17I met Mike in my first job in an insurance company.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19I was the tea girl and the junior typist.

0:02:19 > 0:02:23I had to go and ask Mike if he wanted a cake or would

0:02:23 > 0:02:26he like a hot dog and he said, "Well, I'm a bit of a hot dog,"

0:02:26 > 0:02:29and frightened me to death. I was terrified.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32So, Mike, you're now retired, but that wasn't from insurance.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35- You retired from another career. - That's correct.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38I retired from Cardiff City Police and South Wales Police.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41I loved the job and I didn't really want to retire.

0:02:41 > 0:02:45So, tell me now about antiques and collectables. How's your knowledge?

0:02:45 > 0:02:48Well, we've learnt quite a bit from Bargain Hunt.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50We love it, we watch it all the time.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53And do you have any tactics to try and make a profit?

0:02:53 > 0:02:56We were using our tactics on the breakfast table this morning.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59- Explain that to me.- We had a jug of milk on the breakfast table.

0:02:59 > 0:03:05I had it on offer for £50. She haggled, she offered me a mere 20.

0:03:05 > 0:03:07We eventually agreed 32.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09And what did it sell for at auction at the breakfast table?

0:03:09 > 0:03:13- It sold for £60.- Fantastic! Oh, that's wonderful!

0:03:13 > 0:03:15That's a great dress rehearsal.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18- And you are very competitive, aren't you?- We are very competitive.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21- So you might be a team to reckon with?- Oh, most definitely.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24Most definitely. Watch out, Blues. Watch out.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26Well, let's see what the Blues make of that.

0:03:26 > 0:03:30Let's move on to friends Mary and Helen. Hello to you.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33Mary, tell us how you know your team-mate Helen.

0:03:33 > 0:03:34Well, funnily enough,

0:03:34 > 0:03:39- she's not only my goddaughter, but my ex-daughter-in-law.- Right. OK.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42- And yet you're still so close. - We're still friends, yes.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45So what inspired you to choose Helen to be your team-mate today?

0:03:45 > 0:03:49- Well, we get on very well together and I think that's important.- Absolutely.

0:03:49 > 0:03:51Because we don't want any bickering today, do we?

0:03:51 > 0:03:54- I don't think we'll bicker. - No, we'll keep it down.

0:03:54 > 0:03:56Do you think that you're going to be a good bargain hunter?

0:03:56 > 0:03:59- Well, I hope so. Yes, time will show.- Time will show.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02Obviously your team-mate is Helen and, Helen, we hear

0:04:02 > 0:04:04you're a bit of a high-flyer, so tell us about your career.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07I flew for a major airline for 15 years,

0:04:07 > 0:04:12in first-class and I wasn't an air hostess, I was a beauty therapist.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14- Oh, my goodness. - So I did the massage

0:04:14 > 0:04:18to celebrities and first-class passengers on the aircraft.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21- So, who did you get your hands on? - Brad Pitt.- Really?!

0:04:21 > 0:04:26- Oh, you're the envy of every woman watching!- George Clooney.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29George Clooney! Oh, that's wonderful! So you loved that job.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31And have you given that up now?

0:04:31 > 0:04:34Yes, I have, I gave it up to have my children. I have two little girls.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37So what do you know about antiques and collectables? How's your knowledge?

0:04:37 > 0:04:39To be truthful, I don't know an awful lot

0:04:39 > 0:04:43but, like most ladies, I'm a magpie, I like anything sparkly and shiny.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46What about you, Mary? Have you collected anything over the years?

0:04:46 > 0:04:48What haven't I collected, really?

0:04:48 > 0:04:51I've got a house full of collections of all sorts of things.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54- Over a thousand spoons. - Over a thousand spoons.- Teaspoons.

0:04:54 > 0:04:57And are they beautifully catalogued or are they just shoved in a drawer?

0:04:57 > 0:05:00No, they're in racks all around my hall and up my stairs.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02- A bit of a problem. - They're not catalogued.

0:05:02 > 0:05:04So what are your tactics going to be today?

0:05:04 > 0:05:07- I want to know who's in charge. - Mary's in charge.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10Mary's in charge. OK, so you'll take the helm.

0:05:10 > 0:05:11I'll carry the bags.

0:05:11 > 0:05:13Well, you won't be able to buy spoons or anything without

0:05:13 > 0:05:17- any money, so here's 300 for the Reds.- Thank you.- Fantastic.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19- 300 to the Blues.- Thank you.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22Your experts are eager to meet you, so I'm going to send you off,

0:05:22 > 0:05:25wish you best of luck and, of course, have a great time.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27- Off you go.- Thank you.- Bye.

0:05:27 > 0:05:31I'll tell you what, by the end of this, I'll probably need a massage.

0:05:34 > 0:05:36So it's time to meet today's experts.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Hoping to shake things up for the Reds, it's Thomas Plant.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45And on the lookout with the Blues it's Kate Bliss.

0:05:47 > 0:05:52- So, teams, what's the plan? - I'm looking for something maritime.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54- Are you?- Something gold.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56What are you going to be homing in on, do you think?

0:05:56 > 0:06:00- I think jewellery and sparklies, we both like.- OK.

0:06:00 > 0:06:04- I like silver pin cushions, very tiny ones.- Tiny things.- Tiny things.

0:06:04 > 0:06:08- And I love jewellery.- Anything sparkly. The sparklier the better.

0:06:08 > 0:06:13- Your eyes are twinkling already. - Right, teams, time starts now.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15- That's a long list. Let's go. - It is. Let's go.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17Come on, then. Let's get started.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19- Come on, then. - Enjoy your shopping, teams.

0:06:19 > 0:06:23Now, if you see anything you fancy, just shout.

0:06:23 > 0:06:26I think we can be sure Mary will do that, Kate,

0:06:26 > 0:06:28and the same can be said for Christine.

0:06:28 > 0:06:32- What's this, Thomas? - OK, we'll have a look in here.

0:06:32 > 0:06:36- Now, Mary, I can see you're homing in already over here.- Yes, I am.

0:06:36 > 0:06:40Lovely silver things here. Three of the inkwells there.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43Well, you said you liked inkwells.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46- Yes, but I was thinking of a larger encrier actually.- Right.

0:06:46 > 0:06:48Mary knows what she likes.

0:06:48 > 0:06:50And Christine likes everything.

0:06:50 > 0:06:54- Just pick one thing you like.- I like that.- Good. That's marvellous.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57And I like the baby. Oh, sorry.

0:06:57 > 0:07:02- I can see you're a live one, aren't you?- She certainly is, Thomas.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05Now, Blues, have you been drawn to sparkly items yet?

0:07:05 > 0:07:09Some quite nice girlie things, Helen, that might be up your street.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13- There's some quite nice costume jewellery. - Plenty of choice then, ladies.

0:07:13 > 0:07:17- What's Christine found, Thomas? - 1922 silver compact.

0:07:17 > 0:07:22- I think that's rather nice.- It's a very elegant thing.- It is elegant.

0:07:22 > 0:07:26And it's pretty. You've got the hallmarks there.

0:07:26 > 0:07:29- Uh-huh.- Do we know what the hallmark is?- Do you know the hallmark?

0:07:29 > 0:07:33- It says 1922 on the ticket. - 1922.- So, it's £69.

0:07:33 > 0:07:37- Yes, that's right.- I think we ought to ask the gentleman if that's the best price.

0:07:37 > 0:07:38Is this the best price, sir, for this?

0:07:38 > 0:07:41Well, that one actually belongs to a colleague,

0:07:41 > 0:07:44- so I'd have to go and check what the best price is.- OK.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47- Could you go and ask him for us? - Yes, certainly. No problem at all.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50- Thank you.- Thank you.- So it's a very nice thing.- It is very nice.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52Could somebody wear that as a pendant?

0:07:52 > 0:07:54- They could wear it as a pendant. - Yes.

0:07:54 > 0:07:55They could use it as a little pillbox.

0:07:55 > 0:08:00- Yes, this is lovely.- 1922. - Oh, he's back.- Hello.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03- What's the verdict, sir? - I've had a chat with the dealer.

0:08:03 > 0:08:07- His absolute best has got to be 60. - We'll have it.

0:08:07 > 0:08:11- Yeah, we'll go for it.- We'll have it.- Will you?- Yeah. Thank you.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14- Christine, that's your first item down.- We have our first item down.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17- That was an executive decision made by you.- It definitely was.

0:08:17 > 0:08:20- Definitely was.- It was an executive decision, I agree.- You agree.

0:08:20 > 0:08:22- I agree.- Right. Put it down.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24- I think we need to go and find item number two.- We do.- Come on.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26- Thank you.- Off we go. Thank you.

0:08:26 > 0:08:28Definitely an executive decision made by Christine,

0:08:28 > 0:08:31but that's one in the bag, just shy of ten minutes.

0:08:31 > 0:08:36So the Reds wanted jewellery. Are the Blues about to get theirs?

0:08:36 > 0:08:37There's bracelet in there,

0:08:37 > 0:08:40a bangle that looks rather nice in the corner of that cabinet.

0:08:40 > 0:08:42Yes, that does look nice. Can we have a look at that, please?

0:08:42 > 0:08:47- Certainly. It's a Tiffany bracelet. - It's Tiffany.- Oh, Tiffany's.

0:08:47 > 0:08:49- Breakfast At Tiffany's.- Yes.

0:08:49 > 0:08:51So on the outside,

0:08:51 > 0:08:56we've got 1837 engraved in quite an old-fashioned style of engraving.

0:08:56 > 0:09:00On the inside we've got the modern Tiffany mark there.

0:09:00 > 0:09:02"Tiffany & Co."

0:09:02 > 0:09:05The full name, which is nice to see and, "1997,"

0:09:05 > 0:09:07so we know it's a really modern piece.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10What's the best you can do on that for us?

0:09:10 > 0:09:16- To make a fairly good profit at an auction, I'd say 50.- Right.

0:09:16 > 0:09:18Well, if this didn't have the Tiffany name on it and it was

0:09:18 > 0:09:20just an ordinary silver bracelet,

0:09:20 > 0:09:23I'd probably say about £20 to £30 at auction, if that.

0:09:23 > 0:09:27The Tiffany name stands for a lot, as I'm sure you understand,

0:09:27 > 0:09:30- and it's a good weight. - It is a good weight, yes.

0:09:30 > 0:09:35- I don't suppose you've got a box for it?- Erm...- That would be good.

0:09:35 > 0:09:39Oh, I can see the pale blue. Looking good. Fantastic.

0:09:39 > 0:09:45- Can we have that too?- Yes.- So it's got its box. What do we say, guys?

0:09:45 > 0:09:49Is 50 absolutely rock-bottom? I'm just checking. Yeah.

0:09:49 > 0:09:53- What do we think?- I think it would be good.- Yes, please.

0:09:53 > 0:09:54You're happy, aren't you?

0:09:54 > 0:09:57I think that's a deal. Thank you very much indeed.

0:09:57 > 0:10:03- Well done, Blues.- Great. No, you can't take it home.- Oh!

0:10:03 > 0:10:07Looks like Helen's pleased with the Blue's first buy.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09So with just 15 minutes on the clock,

0:10:09 > 0:10:11neither team is hanging about.

0:10:11 > 0:10:13Now, Thomas appears to have found something

0:10:13 > 0:10:15right up Christine's Street.

0:10:15 > 0:10:17So I've seen something on here which I think we've been looking for.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19- Yes.- I can see.- Yes, I can see. - Yeah.

0:10:19 > 0:10:21- Oh, it's fabulous. - It is good, isn't it?

0:10:21 > 0:10:25- It is fabulous.- It is a bunny rabbit.- Oh, he's so cute!

0:10:25 > 0:10:26- Could it be a hare? - It could be a hare.

0:10:26 > 0:10:28I think it's a hare with the big ears.

0:10:28 > 0:10:30- It's a hare, isn't it, with the ears?- Is it OK?

0:10:30 > 0:10:32- How much is it, Thomas?- £60. - SHE GASPS

0:10:32 > 0:10:35- Oh, thank you.- I have to have that. - £60 on it. It's £60.

0:10:35 > 0:10:37- I have to have it. - I'm borrowing the gentleman's glass.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39- Oh.- Yeah, yeah. - How thoughtful.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42What I'm looking is to see if I can see any strike marks to it

0:10:42 > 0:10:45- or hallmarks.- A hallmark. Nothing at all?

0:10:45 > 0:10:46- No, there's nothing at all... - Not even... No?

0:10:46 > 0:10:48No, it could be continental.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51If this was solid silver and British hallmarks,

0:10:51 > 0:10:52it would be £150.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55- If only, if only. - If only.- If only.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57- But it's not, it's what it is. - He's cute.

0:10:57 > 0:10:59- I think he's rather handsome. - He is, he's lovely.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02- He is so cute. - You can't stop her, can you?

0:11:02 > 0:11:04He's so cute. Look at his ears.

0:11:04 > 0:11:06- Oh, look at that. - He's lovely.

0:11:06 > 0:11:08- Isn't he lovely? Hello. - Hello.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11Hi. Your little... Your little hare.

0:11:11 > 0:11:13- He isn't silver, he's silver plate.- It's silver.

0:11:13 > 0:11:15It's a French one, it's not an English one.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18- Oh, is it? - He's lovely.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21- You've got 60 on it.- 35.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24- Would you do him for 30 for us? - 35.- 30?

0:11:24 > 0:11:27- I can't.- You can't do it for 30. - I can't, I'm afraid.

0:11:27 > 0:11:29- She's almost taken half off! - Yes, she has.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32- We'll have him for 35. - Another executive decision.- Yes.

0:11:32 > 0:11:34- 35. I agree, I agree. - Is that OK, Michael? Well done.

0:11:34 > 0:11:36- That's fine by me. Yeah... - Yes.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38Thank you, madam. Thank you.

0:11:38 > 0:11:41- Mike...?- Merci beaucoup. - Merci, madame.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44- You have to buy something now, darling...- I will.- ..that you like.

0:11:44 > 0:11:45I will, definitely.

0:11:45 > 0:11:49If he's allowed! Remember, Mike wanted to find something maritime.

0:11:49 > 0:11:53With two items down in 17 minutes, Reds, are you enjoying it?

0:11:53 > 0:11:55I think things are going really well, to be honest with you.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59- Really well.- I didn't think we'd have two down in 17 minutes.

0:11:59 > 0:12:00Hm, impressive stuff.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02Whilst we leave the teams to it,

0:12:02 > 0:12:05I'm going to show you an item I found at the fair.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12Now, I could ask you what on earth is this?

0:12:12 > 0:12:15But I think you'll all know that it's a cheese dome.

0:12:15 > 0:12:22But I will ask you have you ever seen a cheese dome as big as this?

0:12:22 > 0:12:23Because I certainly haven't.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26Now, what we want to know is who it's by.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29I had an inkling that this would be by Linthorpe.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32I checked the base... Phew, I was right!

0:12:32 > 0:12:34But what I wanted to see wasn't there.

0:12:34 > 0:12:38I wanted to see the letters CHR Dresser

0:12:38 > 0:12:42and that would have meant it was designed by Christopher Dresser -

0:12:42 > 0:12:45that great Glaswegian designer.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48It's not by Dresser, but it's very much in his style.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51What hallmark does it bear that makes me think that?

0:12:51 > 0:12:54Well, first of all, I'm looking straight at those handles

0:12:54 > 0:12:57because with Christopher Dresser it's all about the handles.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00What else makes me think of Dresser?

0:13:00 > 0:13:03Well, this gorgeous honeysuckle design that encompasses

0:13:03 > 0:13:05the whole dome and the base

0:13:05 > 0:13:08because Christopher Dresser was not only a designer,

0:13:08 > 0:13:10he was also a keen botanist.

0:13:10 > 0:13:14So I am quite surprised this wasn't designed by the man himself.

0:13:14 > 0:13:18But I do know that it was designed after 1882.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21And how do I know that? Well, I'll tell you in a minute.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24Another thing I want to focus on just before we flip it over

0:13:24 > 0:13:27is this gorgeous mustered glaze.

0:13:27 > 0:13:33That's what caught my eye because this was a colour that Dresser loved

0:13:33 > 0:13:35to use for his Linthorpe designs.

0:13:35 > 0:13:40How do I know it's not him? I promised I'd show you, so I will.

0:13:40 > 0:13:44On the base here it's incised "Linthorpe."

0:13:44 > 0:13:47If you see a little bit of Linthorpe, and you see

0:13:47 > 0:13:50a bowl in the incised signature at the bottom,

0:13:50 > 0:13:53then you know that this was incised

0:13:53 > 0:13:58after Christopher Dresser left the company in 1882.

0:13:58 > 0:14:01As an homage to Dresser, we see this lovely bowl,

0:14:01 > 0:14:04but gone is the designer himself.

0:14:04 > 0:14:06So what's it worth?

0:14:06 > 0:14:10Well, the gentleman manning the stall has a sticker of 180.

0:14:10 > 0:14:13So, in true Bargain Hunt style, I had a haggle,

0:14:13 > 0:14:15and he said he'd sell it to me for 160,

0:14:15 > 0:14:18which was music to my ears

0:14:18 > 0:14:22because I reckon that in a specialist Aesthetic style sale,

0:14:22 > 0:14:26this piece in the style of Dresser would have an estimate of £2-300.

0:14:28 > 0:14:31Well, it might not exceed the top end of the estimate but

0:14:31 > 0:14:35believe me, if you walked into any auction house with a cheese dome

0:14:35 > 0:14:38like this, you would be the big cheese yourself.

0:14:45 > 0:14:48Back to it and we're approaching the halfway mark.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51The Blues already have one item but the Reds have bought two in

0:14:51 > 0:14:54just 17 minutes. Thomas, are you having fun?

0:14:54 > 0:14:56These two are amazing.

0:14:56 > 0:15:00However, there is one force of nature here which is not

0:15:00 > 0:15:02going to be stopped.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05Christine is bulldozing poor old Mike.

0:15:05 > 0:15:08Mike, I don't think he's said more than ten words to me yet.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11This next purchase, our third and final,

0:15:11 > 0:15:13is going to be all about him

0:15:13 > 0:15:16and us men have to gang up against Christine

0:15:16 > 0:15:17and I'd better go and save him.

0:15:17 > 0:15:20Yes, I'll be interested to see how that's going to work.

0:15:20 > 0:15:22Mike, this doesn't look very maritime.

0:15:22 > 0:15:24- What are you doing? - Hi, Thomas. Hi.

0:15:24 > 0:15:25- What are you doing? - I'm nosey...

0:15:25 > 0:15:27I thought this was Mike's choice.

0:15:27 > 0:15:29It's supposed to be my choice, isn't it?

0:15:29 > 0:15:31Well, we do like the same things.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34- It's supposed to be my choice. - Don't you, Mike?!

0:15:34 > 0:15:37- We're looking for something maritime.- Maritime...

0:15:37 > 0:15:39- Give poor Michael a chance.- Well, yes...

0:15:39 > 0:15:41- It's your chance now. - Thank you very much.

0:15:41 > 0:15:43- I'm very grateful. - Whatever you like...

0:15:43 > 0:15:45- Whatever you like, we'll buy. - As long as it's OK with you.

0:15:45 > 0:15:49- What about..?- Within reason!- Within reason?! Off you go.- Right.- Come on.

0:15:49 > 0:15:52Boys, Christine is running rings around you.

0:15:52 > 0:15:56Good luck, Mike. So have the Blues sniffed our their second buy yet?

0:15:56 > 0:15:59We've got scent bottles, Helen. You said you liked scent bottles.

0:15:59 > 0:16:02I'm just looking at the top at the Sabino Glass, Helen.

0:16:02 > 0:16:05- Do you like those? - Yes, they're pretty.

0:16:05 > 0:16:08What are we looking at in terms of price for the Sabino scent bottles?

0:16:08 > 0:16:11The one at the back there.

0:16:11 > 0:16:13Well, the price on it is 130.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16- It's signed Sabino.- Right.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19- My absolute best on that would be a straight 100...- Right.

0:16:19 > 0:16:20..that's the death on that.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23I'm going to pick this one up, if I may, madam?

0:16:23 > 0:16:26- Is it all perfect, as far as you know?- As far as I know.- Yep.

0:16:26 > 0:16:29- You're welcome to check. - So this is lovely.

0:16:29 > 0:16:32These, sort of, swags, are very Art Nouveau, aren't they?

0:16:32 > 0:16:34It's just a great colour, isn't it?

0:16:34 > 0:16:38- I think it's lovely.- Would you have it on a dressing table, Mary?- Yes.

0:16:38 > 0:16:41We can't push you just a tiny bit more under the 100?

0:16:41 > 0:16:4595, but that would absolutely be it.

0:16:45 > 0:16:47OK, thank you very much.

0:16:47 > 0:16:49What about the other scent bottle, Blues?

0:16:49 > 0:16:51This one might be slightly cheaper.

0:16:51 > 0:16:54What you think, Helen. You have a little look.

0:16:54 > 0:16:57- I like that.- 80...?- 85.- 85.

0:16:57 > 0:17:02So we've got the choice of this one at 85 or the larger one at 95.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05- I have to say, I think the larger makes a better statement.- Yes.

0:17:05 > 0:17:07- Do you agree, Helen? - Yes, I agree.

0:17:07 > 0:17:10And for only £10 more, there's a lot more of it.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13- You're right. Shall we go for it and take that larger one?- Yes, OK.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16- I think you've got a deal, madam. - Wonderful.- Thank you very much.

0:17:16 > 0:17:21- Lovely.- I'll wrap it...- Great. Thank you. Super. Full steam ahead.

0:17:21 > 0:17:22Full steam ahead, indeed.

0:17:22 > 0:17:25Second item for the Blues in 35 minutes.

0:17:25 > 0:17:29So both teams need one more item. Mike, are you getting a look in?

0:17:29 > 0:17:33A 19th century... You're almost there, Christine. Yeah, OK...

0:17:33 > 0:17:36- Thank you.- Oh, sorry.- I like that. - Do you like that?

0:17:36 > 0:17:38- Yeah, I like that.- It's... - You like that?

0:17:38 > 0:17:41- Can I have a look?- Yes, of course. Please do.- I like that.

0:17:42 > 0:17:45- Look at the way that's turned. - It's beautifully turned.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48- That's beautiful. That's lovely. - A 19th century child's toy.

0:17:48 > 0:17:50- Do you like that, Mike? - I'm not so keen on the price.- No.

0:17:50 > 0:17:52Do you want to go and have a chat with him?

0:17:52 > 0:17:55- All right, what is the mark? What's it marked as?- It's £120.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58- It's £120. There we go. I love it. - Mike, do you want to go and have a chat with the man?

0:17:58 > 0:18:01- Go and have a chat... - Where is he? Where's the man? - See what you can do.

0:18:01 > 0:18:02Let Mike have a word, Christine.

0:18:02 > 0:18:05- I like it very much.- Yeah. - I'm not so keen on the price though.

0:18:05 > 0:18:07- Yeah, I know. This is the thing, isn't it?- I'm not so keen...

0:18:07 > 0:18:11This is the thing, I'm going to have to look at the stock number and I'll find out what it cost me.

0:18:11 > 0:18:15- I'll go and have a look. - OK, thank you.- BOTH: Thank you.

0:18:15 > 0:18:17- You've got to put this in context. - Yes.

0:18:17 > 0:18:19A child in the mid-19th century...

0:18:19 > 0:18:22In the Victorian period children were precious.

0:18:22 > 0:18:23- They were precious.- Exactly.- Yes.

0:18:23 > 0:18:27There were lots of childhood illnesses and some didn't survive.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30Toys were expensive things and this would have been

0:18:30 > 0:18:34an expensive toy to make because it's carved out of such a hard wood.

0:18:34 > 0:18:38Right, the best I can do it is £95.

0:18:38 > 0:18:40- 95?- Yes, 95.

0:18:40 > 0:18:44Could you do a little bit less than 95? Could you make it 90?

0:18:44 > 0:18:46No, I can't. I can't. Honestly, I can't.

0:18:46 > 0:18:47- I wouldn't normally quote 95. - All right.

0:18:47 > 0:18:48- He's tried.- It's very...

0:18:48 > 0:18:51- It's very nice. You like it. - I think we'll go for it.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54- You have to buy something that you like.- Thank you very much, sir.

0:18:54 > 0:18:57- It's a pleasure.- A real pleasure. - I wish you well.- Thank you.

0:18:57 > 0:19:00- Thank you, sir. - I hope you've enjoyed yourself.

0:19:00 > 0:19:02- Oh, we have. We've had a ball. - Thank you very much.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05- That's it, third and final item done.- Done. Fantastic.- Done.

0:19:05 > 0:19:07- Fantastic! - Fantastic.- You are fabulous.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10Do you know what? I now need a cup of tea. Come on, let's go.

0:19:10 > 0:19:13I should think you do, Thomas.

0:19:13 > 0:19:16So in 40 minutes, that's the job done for the Reds

0:19:16 > 0:19:20but I'm not convinced it was entirely Mike's choice.

0:19:20 > 0:19:22So, Blues, it's over to you.

0:19:22 > 0:19:24Helen, what have you spotted?

0:19:24 > 0:19:25Look at it, our little pug dog there.

0:19:25 > 0:19:28They seem to be all the fashion all at the moment.

0:19:28 > 0:19:29He's quite sweet, isn't he?

0:19:29 > 0:19:32Let me reach in and have a closer look at him.

0:19:33 > 0:19:36Well, we've got a factory mark on his tummy.

0:19:36 > 0:19:38- A Beswick.- A Beswick, indeed.

0:19:38 > 0:19:44I can tell by that shape, I think he's probably '50s in date.

0:19:44 > 0:19:46The thing about these Beswick models

0:19:46 > 0:19:49- is you've just got to check the condition.- BOTH: Yes.

0:19:49 > 0:19:51Hi there. Hi. How much is he?

0:19:51 > 0:19:53- We wanted 25 for him.- 25.

0:19:53 > 0:19:56- Is that the absolute bottom? - That is, yes.- Yeah...

0:19:56 > 0:19:59- Even for the Blue team?- Even for the Blue Team. I'm sorry, yes.

0:19:59 > 0:20:03At auction, they vary from sort of £15-£25

0:20:03 > 0:20:05so we're probably about on the money.

0:20:05 > 0:20:09But you never know, we might have a real pug dog lover.

0:20:09 > 0:20:11You're not sure about this one, are you?

0:20:11 > 0:20:13I'm a bit nervous that he's already at his peak and we won't get

0:20:13 > 0:20:16- any more for him. - You've peaked, pug.- You've peaked!

0:20:16 > 0:20:20Helen thinks so, anyway. But you quite like him, Mary?

0:20:20 > 0:20:23- Yes, I think he's lovely. - Right, let's put him back then.

0:20:23 > 0:20:25Shall we have a quick look, and then we can always come back?

0:20:25 > 0:20:27All right, let's do that.

0:20:27 > 0:20:30Helen's not convinced they're barking up the right tree.

0:20:30 > 0:20:33See what else she can find in the remaining 15 minutes.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36Thomas, are you feeling a bit shellshocked?

0:20:36 > 0:20:38I don't think I'm going to recover

0:20:38 > 0:20:40from this experience for a very long time.

0:20:40 > 0:20:44You two have been totally marvellous.

0:20:44 > 0:20:45Absolutely brilliant.

0:20:45 > 0:20:48So I salute you with a good slurp of coffee.

0:20:48 > 0:20:51- You're having tea.- Cheers!- Cheers.

0:20:51 > 0:20:55Cheers, Reds. Blues, is this worth an investment? Ten minutes left.

0:20:55 > 0:20:57I quite like the look of this, ladies.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00I'm conscious we really are tight for time.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03Let's have a very quick look at this. Do you know what this is?

0:21:03 > 0:21:05- A vesta case.- You've got it, it's a vesta case

0:21:05 > 0:21:07and it's actually for matches.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10And it would've been worn on a gentleman's watch chain,

0:21:10 > 0:21:12that's right. So he had his matches ready to strike,

0:21:12 > 0:21:15light has pipe, or whatever he wanted to do.

0:21:15 > 0:21:18They're always hallmarked just on the inside, here.

0:21:18 > 0:21:20And you can see that's a really nice, period one.

0:21:20 > 0:21:23I think that's probably Victorian, isn't it, sir? Yep.

0:21:23 > 0:21:26And we've got some nice engraving in the silver.

0:21:26 > 0:21:30The hinge is in good condition. And if he'll give us a good price...

0:21:30 > 0:21:32I'm just smiling sweetly at him.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34..that might be something that collectors

0:21:34 > 0:21:38might go for at our auction. What could you do for us on that?

0:21:38 > 0:21:40You can have it for 20.

0:21:40 > 0:21:47For 20. I would say, ladies, these make anything from £15-£30.

0:21:47 > 0:21:51Could you tuck it just under the 20 so that it sounds better for us?

0:21:52 > 0:21:55- 19.50. - 19.99!

0:21:55 > 0:21:59- £19 is the very best. - Thank you very much.

0:21:59 > 0:22:02- And think it could be a good buy for £19.- Do you, Mary?

0:22:02 > 0:22:05Yes, I think we should perhaps go for that. What about you?

0:22:05 > 0:22:06Yes, it's pretty.

0:22:06 > 0:22:11- So we're not having the little dog, we're happy with this?- Yes.

0:22:11 > 0:22:14Good decision. We'll do it. Thank you, sir. With minutes to go.

0:22:14 > 0:22:17ALARM CLOCKS RING Well, that's it, time is up.

0:22:17 > 0:22:20- Are you happy?- Yes, I am.- Are you happy, Mary?- Very happy.- Well done.

0:22:20 > 0:22:23I think we all deserve a sit down and a nice cup of tea.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26Let's remind ourselves what the Red team bought.

0:22:26 > 0:22:29First up, the Reds are hoping for a pretty profit

0:22:29 > 0:22:31with this compact, bought for £60.

0:22:34 > 0:22:38Next, they hopped on and bought this hare pincushion for £35.

0:22:39 > 0:22:42And finally, will it be game, set and match

0:22:42 > 0:22:45with this bilboquet, bought for £95?

0:22:45 > 0:22:48Well, it was coffee that brought you together 55 years ago.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51And here we are, having a cup of tea on Bargain Hunt.

0:22:51 > 0:22:54With time to spare. Well done!

0:22:54 > 0:22:57So, out of all the three items, Christine, which is your favourite?

0:22:57 > 0:23:00It has to be the hare pincushion, it's beautiful.

0:23:00 > 0:23:02And do you think it's going to be the hare

0:23:02 > 0:23:04- that brings the biggest profit? - I think so, yes.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07So, Mike, this is your chance to start talking.

0:23:07 > 0:23:09Tell me, which was your favourite item?

0:23:09 > 0:23:12My favourite item, without doubt, was the Queen Victorian toy.

0:23:12 > 0:23:15- Do you think it's going to bring the biggest profit?- I certainly do.

0:23:15 > 0:23:17I think it will bring the biggest profit.

0:23:17 > 0:23:20I'm quite proud of you two as well, because not only did you get

0:23:20 > 0:23:25that done so quickly, you did spend quite a chunk of the money, £190.

0:23:25 > 0:23:29- We did!- So, let me guess, Christine, do you have the leftover money?

0:23:29 > 0:23:32- Yeah, of course she does! - Let me check that!

0:23:32 > 0:23:35Let me take it from you. 110.

0:23:35 > 0:23:37Thomas, there's £110.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39I'm going to balance it up.

0:23:39 > 0:23:43I'm going to buy something masculine and male for my friend, Mike!

0:23:43 > 0:23:45- That's brilliant.- OK!

0:23:45 > 0:23:46I'll be forever grateful.

0:23:46 > 0:23:49So while Thomas goes and finds something for the boys,

0:23:49 > 0:23:51let's go and see what those Blues bought.

0:23:53 > 0:23:55The Blues both wanted to buy some jewellery,

0:23:55 > 0:23:58and settled on this Tiffany bracelet for £50.

0:24:00 > 0:24:03Next up, can they smell a profit with this scent bottle,

0:24:03 > 0:24:04bought for £95?

0:24:06 > 0:24:11And finally, they invested £19 of their budget on this vesta case.

0:24:11 > 0:24:12Well done, Mary and Helen,

0:24:12 > 0:24:15- you really used the whole hour, didn't you?- Oh, yes!

0:24:15 > 0:24:18You managed to get three items, kind of what you were looking for.

0:24:18 > 0:24:20Which was your favourite, Mary, of the three?

0:24:20 > 0:24:24- Mine was the perfume bottle.- Perfume bottle, so gorgeous, isn't it?- Yes.

0:24:24 > 0:24:26Do you think, when we get to Cardiff for the auction,

0:24:26 > 0:24:29that's going to bring the biggest profit, or maybe one of the others?

0:24:29 > 0:24:33I think, perhaps, the vesta case might make the most profit,

0:24:33 > 0:24:35- because they seem very popular at the sales.- They are, aren't they?

0:24:35 > 0:24:38And what about you, Helen? I think you have a different favourite.

0:24:38 > 0:24:39Yes, the Tiffany bracelet!

0:24:39 > 0:24:42- The Tiffany bracelet, right up your street.- Oh, it was, yes!

0:24:42 > 0:24:45- But is it going to bring the biggest profit?- Of course!- Oh, you think so?

0:24:45 > 0:24:46- Yes!- OK!

0:24:46 > 0:24:50You only spent £164.

0:24:50 > 0:24:52So, Mary, you've got £136 in your pocket.

0:24:52 > 0:24:55Am I going to have to prise it from you,

0:24:55 > 0:24:57or are you handing it over willingly?

0:24:57 > 0:24:59There we are! Thank you.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01- Don't worry, it doesn't stay with me for long, it goes to Kate.- Great.

0:25:01 > 0:25:04- And that's a lot of money.- It is.

0:25:04 > 0:25:06Is it going to be an inkstand, then, Kate?

0:25:06 > 0:25:10Well, I've got to find the right one first. I'll do my best, Mary.

0:25:10 > 0:25:12- Oh, thank you.- A bit more Tiffany?

0:25:12 > 0:25:15I'm going to be hard pushed to please you both, aren't I?

0:25:15 > 0:25:16Yes, very hard.

0:25:16 > 0:25:18Well, Kate's got her work cut out,

0:25:18 > 0:25:21but let's see if it all pays off as we head to Cardiff for the auction.

0:25:29 > 0:25:33I've travelled south, and here I am in Cardiff at Rogers Jones,

0:25:33 > 0:25:37and I'm sitting with Ben Rogers Jones, auctioneer for the day.

0:25:37 > 0:25:38- Hello to you, Ben.- Hello.

0:25:38 > 0:25:39Thank you for having us along.

0:25:39 > 0:25:43We're going to start with our Red team, Christine and Mike.

0:25:43 > 0:25:45We've got a compact here with guilloche enamel.

0:25:45 > 0:25:48It's silver, it's hallmarked, it's looped for suspension -

0:25:48 > 0:25:52- so, what do you think?- Rather a plain Jane, if I must say so.

0:25:52 > 0:25:56And a little bit dented on the side there, as you can see.

0:25:56 > 0:25:59It's a fair enough piece. I mean, there are lots of them around.

0:25:59 > 0:26:02It probably would have been part of a set.

0:26:02 > 0:26:06I've got to be fairly modest with my estimate, £10-15.

0:26:06 > 0:26:08Well, Christine, who chose the compact,

0:26:08 > 0:26:11won't be happy with that, because they paid £60 for it.

0:26:11 > 0:26:13But let's move on to item number two,

0:26:13 > 0:26:18which is, in fact, Christine's favourite - this novelty pincushion.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21Now, are you quite confident that this is silver?

0:26:21 > 0:26:25- I'm fairly convinced that it's silver.- OK, great.

0:26:25 > 0:26:29It's unhallmarked, which may cast a doubt in some collectors' minds.

0:26:29 > 0:26:31Do you reckon some hands are going to leap up in the saleroom?

0:26:31 > 0:26:33I think we'll have some competition for it.

0:26:33 > 0:26:37- I've put an estimate of £30-40 on it.- OK.

0:26:37 > 0:26:41As I say, Christine loved it, had to have it. She paid £35 for it.

0:26:41 > 0:26:43I reckon everyone was quite happy with that.

0:26:43 > 0:26:47That was Christine's favourite item. This is Mike's favourite item.

0:26:47 > 0:26:49This ballgame here.

0:26:49 > 0:26:53What do you think of it? Because he adored it.

0:26:53 > 0:26:58This is the famous French game of bilboquet. It's nicely turned.

0:26:58 > 0:27:02It's got age. There are a few of these around,

0:27:02 > 0:27:06often they came in sets, or compendiums, of games.

0:27:06 > 0:27:10It's on its own. I think, estimate-wise, £30-40.

0:27:10 > 0:27:14OK, can't do any better? Can't tempt you to raise the estimate a little?

0:27:14 > 0:27:19No, I think computer games have probably superseded the bilboquet,

0:27:19 > 0:27:22so we can't go too strong on it.

0:27:22 > 0:27:25Well, perhaps Mike was a wee bit nostalgic when he went for this one.

0:27:25 > 0:27:29- He paid £95 for it.- Goodness.

0:27:29 > 0:27:33Well, if the auctioneer's wincing, we might just need the bonus buy,

0:27:33 > 0:27:36so let's find out what Thomas Plant bought for the Reds.

0:27:36 > 0:27:39OK, well, Thomas, show us what you got.

0:27:39 > 0:27:42Well, Mike, this is just for you,

0:27:42 > 0:27:43- I have to say.- Oh, wow.

0:27:43 > 0:27:45- There it is!- Oh, wow!

0:27:45 > 0:27:47- It's an anchor!- There's your anchor.

0:27:47 > 0:27:51- There's your bit of maritime.- That's brilliant.- Anchors aweigh, I say!

0:27:51 > 0:27:55Christine, you wouldn't let him buy any maritime, would you?

0:27:55 > 0:27:57- No, I wouldn't.- No, you wouldn't, so I did it for him!

0:27:57 > 0:28:01- It's a cast-iron anchor from the 1920s, 1930s.- 1920s?

0:28:01 > 0:28:04- Yeah, yeah, it's a French one.- Oh!

0:28:04 > 0:28:07And I spent the grand total of £35 on it.

0:28:07 > 0:28:10- You didn't!- I did, I did.

0:28:10 > 0:28:12Well, Mike, he says it's for you, are you impressed?

0:28:12 > 0:28:15I am impressed, yeah. Do you think that'll make us a profit?

0:28:15 > 0:28:18It's going to make a little bit of a profit. It's a garden piece now.

0:28:18 > 0:28:20Definitely do the job, that will.

0:28:20 > 0:28:21You think it'll definitely do the job.

0:28:21 > 0:28:24- Well, those could be famous last words, Mike.- Could be!

0:28:24 > 0:28:26I've got a sneaky feeling it is going to do the job,

0:28:26 > 0:28:28and we're going to do well with this one.

0:28:28 > 0:28:30This positive attitude is very welcome,

0:28:30 > 0:28:32but don't make up your mind until the auction.

0:28:32 > 0:28:35So, let's head over to our auctioneer to find out what

0:28:35 > 0:28:40he thinks of Thomas' rusty and rustic anchor.

0:28:40 > 0:28:43Here is Thomas' maritime anchor.

0:28:43 > 0:28:45- Wow.- Tell me, what do you think?

0:28:46 > 0:28:48Right.

0:28:48 > 0:28:50Rusty piece of metal.

0:28:50 > 0:28:53Yes, but it's so nicely modelled...?

0:28:53 > 0:28:57- Or is it?- Not really. - Not really?- No.

0:28:57 > 0:29:00I don't know, there's got to be some positives there.

0:29:00 > 0:29:05I mean, it's interestingly formed, it's obviously seen action,

0:29:05 > 0:29:08if this anchor could talk, what would it say?

0:29:08 > 0:29:10"Glug, glug, glug," perhaps?

0:29:10 > 0:29:12"Help me, take me out of this auction room!"

0:29:12 > 0:29:14But it's got to go somewhere.

0:29:14 > 0:29:17Do you reckon it you've got buyers, maybe interior designers,

0:29:17 > 0:29:18cafe owners, things like that?

0:29:18 > 0:29:21It's difficult to see a purpose for it, really,

0:29:21 > 0:29:24- other than throwing in the sea. - Well, you don't seem inspired.

0:29:24 > 0:29:28Have you placed an inspiring estimate upon this rusty anchor?

0:29:28 > 0:29:31I've put £15-25 for its scrap value.

0:29:31 > 0:29:34Well, that's all right, it might still swim,

0:29:34 > 0:29:37- because Thomas only paid £35 for it. - Oh, well...

0:29:37 > 0:29:40So all hope is not lost at the bottom of the sea.

0:29:40 > 0:29:44Now, let's move on to our Blues, Mary and Helen.

0:29:44 > 0:29:48And we'll start off with Helen's absolute favourite,

0:29:48 > 0:29:50this Tiffany silver open bangle.

0:29:50 > 0:29:53Now, do you have a lot of jewellery buyers coming to the sale?

0:29:53 > 0:29:55It's in good company, this bangle,

0:29:55 > 0:29:58there's a lot of jewellery in this sale. I think it'll do quite well.

0:29:58 > 0:30:01- Very commercial.- Yes. - At what kind of price?

0:30:01 > 0:30:04- 50-80?- Fantastic. Well, Helen had to have it.

0:30:04 > 0:30:07I think she wanted it for herself, and they paid £50 for it.

0:30:07 > 0:30:10- Oh, there we are.- So, Mary trusted Helen's taste there,

0:30:10 > 0:30:12and she probably did the right thing.

0:30:12 > 0:30:13Let's move on to Mary's favourite,

0:30:13 > 0:30:17this lovely, moulded, Sabino glass scent bottle.

0:30:17 > 0:30:19You've got to have something good to say about that.

0:30:19 > 0:30:22It's nice - a nice, opalescent bottle.

0:30:22 > 0:30:25Not particularly old, and that's important.

0:30:25 > 0:30:28But rather attractive, and there are collectors for Sabino glass,

0:30:28 > 0:30:29I think it might do well.

0:30:29 > 0:30:32Yeah, and these are very trendy, aren't they, all of a sudden.

0:30:32 > 0:30:35Scent bottles are the thing to have, for the lady has everything.

0:30:35 > 0:30:36Absolutely.

0:30:36 > 0:30:40And what kind of price does the lady who has everything want to pay?

0:30:40 > 0:30:41£30-40.

0:30:41 > 0:30:47Well, these ladies - who have their hopes pinned on this - paid £95!

0:30:47 > 0:30:50Right. Well, there is some interest, so we'll see.

0:30:50 > 0:30:52Might be a little bit rich.

0:30:52 > 0:30:56- OK, so they could come out smelling of roses in the end.- They might do.

0:30:56 > 0:30:59OK, now we'll move on to this vesta case.

0:30:59 > 0:31:01Mary reckons there's profit to be made in this.

0:31:01 > 0:31:05It is silver. What do you think your buyers are going to make of it?

0:31:05 > 0:31:09If there's one silver item that we see an awful lot of,

0:31:09 > 0:31:12it's vesta cases and cigarette cases.

0:31:12 > 0:31:15There's a huge number of them in the country.

0:31:15 > 0:31:19It doesn't have anything unusual about it.

0:31:19 > 0:31:21It's fairly plain.

0:31:21 > 0:31:23Floral engraved vesta case.

0:31:23 > 0:31:26Can't go to strong on that one, I'm afraid.

0:31:26 > 0:31:28- OK, how strong did you go?- £20-25.

0:31:28 > 0:31:31Do you know, the ladies fought hard

0:31:31 > 0:31:36for every last pound off of this, and they did get it down to £19.

0:31:36 > 0:31:39Mary reckons the vesta case will bring the biggest profit,

0:31:39 > 0:31:42but perhaps it will be her favourite item, the scent bottle,

0:31:42 > 0:31:43that lets them down.

0:31:43 > 0:31:46So, if it does, they might need to rely on their bonus buy.

0:31:46 > 0:31:48Let's find out what it is.

0:31:48 > 0:31:52Well, Mary and Helen, the shopping's done, but it wasn't over for Kate.

0:31:52 > 0:31:57- She had £136 to spend of your leftover money.- Yes.

0:31:57 > 0:32:00- So what on Earth did you spend it on?- Let's see!

0:32:00 > 0:32:03BOTH: Ooh!

0:32:03 > 0:32:06Oh, my favourite, owls!

0:32:06 > 0:32:10- What's it say underneath it? - That's a good question, Mary.

0:32:10 > 0:32:14We have got a little signature in script there.

0:32:14 > 0:32:15Which says...

0:32:15 > 0:32:17- Lalique.- Wahey!

0:32:17 > 0:32:20That makes it very special.

0:32:20 > 0:32:22This is a modern piece.

0:32:22 > 0:32:26We can tell really, by the style of it, but also because we've

0:32:26 > 0:32:30got that script signature, we haven't got the initial R.

0:32:30 > 0:32:32So, I paid...

0:32:32 > 0:32:34- £40.- Ooh!

0:32:34 > 0:32:36That's good, yes.

0:32:36 > 0:32:38What do you think that's going to make for us?

0:32:38 > 0:32:41Well, I've seen these modern pieces at auction, Mary,

0:32:41 > 0:32:43go for £60-70.

0:32:43 > 0:32:49So, if we've got a good buyer here today, it could fetch that much.

0:32:49 > 0:32:51- That would be fine. - That would be great.

0:32:51 > 0:32:54We'll keep our fingers crossed, but remember, don't make your

0:32:54 > 0:32:57minds up now, it all comes down to how well you're doing at auction.

0:32:57 > 0:33:00So, for now, we'll head back to our auctioneer to see if

0:33:00 > 0:33:03he thinks this owl will turn heads in the saleroom.

0:33:04 > 0:33:07OK, so to add to the glass we already have,

0:33:07 > 0:33:09we've got this Lalique owl.

0:33:09 > 0:33:11Modern as it is, attractive though, surely?

0:33:11 > 0:33:13Oh, it's lovely.

0:33:13 > 0:33:15Lalique is a sign of quality.

0:33:15 > 0:33:19- And owls are favourite birds, aren't they?- They are!

0:33:19 > 0:33:22- I think this will do well. - Yeah, you reckon?

0:33:22 > 0:33:25- At what sort of estimate? - £40-50.- 40-50.

0:33:25 > 0:33:30Let me tell you, Kate Bliss managed to get this very nice,

0:33:30 > 0:33:32modern Lalique owl, for £40 only.

0:33:32 > 0:33:34She must have fought hard.

0:33:34 > 0:33:38So, in that case, I think it's going to be good news all round.

0:33:38 > 0:33:41- I've got a good feeling about today's auction. Have you?- I have.

0:33:41 > 0:33:43- So, will you be taking to the rostrum today, Ben?- I will.

0:33:43 > 0:33:45Great, well, I look forward to picking up some tips.

0:33:45 > 0:33:47Let's head there now.

0:33:51 > 0:33:53Right, Mike, Christine, Thomas - here we are.

0:33:53 > 0:33:57- You guys must have been to an auction before?- No, my first time!

0:33:57 > 0:33:59Now is the time to see how it's done,

0:33:59 > 0:34:01because this is a great auction house.

0:34:01 > 0:34:04As you can see, the room is full.

0:34:04 > 0:34:07- Are you ready for your first lot? - I'm ready.- Here it comes.

0:34:07 > 0:34:12174a, a silver and guilloche enamel compact case. Rather nice.

0:34:12 > 0:34:14£30? Bid me 30?

0:34:15 > 0:34:17Bid me 30?

0:34:17 > 0:34:1920 to start?

0:34:19 > 0:34:2120 I have online.

0:34:21 > 0:34:23Come on, come on!

0:34:23 > 0:34:2525? £25?

0:34:25 > 0:34:26Is there 30?

0:34:41 > 0:34:43£30!

0:34:45 > 0:34:47Now, don't worry, we've got two items to go.

0:34:47 > 0:34:48Now it's our novelty pincushion.

0:34:48 > 0:34:53You're £30 under, and you paid £35 for this, so we need a good price.

0:34:53 > 0:34:54Here it comes.

0:34:54 > 0:34:57174b, isn't this lovely?

0:34:57 > 0:35:00The little, silver pincushion in the form of a seated rabbit.

0:35:33 > 0:35:3660, well done! It sold for 60, that's exciting.

0:35:36 > 0:35:38That means it made £25,

0:35:38 > 0:35:41and you are now just £5 under.

0:35:41 > 0:35:44174, the turned bilboquet.

0:35:44 > 0:35:47£30, 30?

0:35:47 > 0:35:50- Oh, no!- Don't worry.

0:35:50 > 0:35:53- Bid me 20?- Shocked.

0:35:58 > 0:36:0018.

0:36:00 > 0:36:02- You're shocked. MIKE:- I am.

0:36:02 > 0:36:03Come on!

0:36:19 > 0:36:21Well, it's got a long way to go.

0:36:21 > 0:36:23Closing up now, at 25...

0:36:25 > 0:36:27- Aw!- Oh, £25!

0:36:27 > 0:36:29OK, what does that mean, it means you've lost 70,

0:36:29 > 0:36:33which means you've lost 75 in total.

0:36:33 > 0:36:37Panic not, remember that positive attitude you had a moment ago?

0:36:37 > 0:36:42Bring it back, because maritime is the word of the moment.

0:36:42 > 0:36:45Now you've got to decide, are you going to go with Thomas'

0:36:45 > 0:36:47rusty old anchor?

0:36:47 > 0:36:50Of course, no choice!

0:36:50 > 0:36:52This is it, it's going under the hammer.
