0:00:11 > 0:00:18I'm behind the wheel of a motoring legend, the Land Rover Defender,
0:00:18 > 0:00:24conceived in 1947 by Rover designer and local farmer Maurice Wilks
0:00:24 > 0:00:27when he drew the shape of the vehicle
0:00:27 > 0:00:30on the sand on a nearby beach,
0:00:30 > 0:00:34and it's the perfect way for getting me to the fair,

0:01:26 > 0:01:28The Blues are in the pink...
0:01:28 > 0:01:29Pink!
0:01:29 > 0:01:32No, more shabby than pink, we've got here.
0:01:32 > 0:01:34And it's...pink.
0:01:34 > 0:01:37..and I take time out to visit Chester Zoo...
0:01:37 > 0:01:41Slimy sprats for breakfast, my little happy feet.
0:01:43 > 0:01:45..and there is drama at the auction!
0:01:45 > 0:01:4820 right away! 27!
0:01:49 > 0:01:51Yes! Yes!

0:02:00 > 0:02:04For the Reds, we have brothers Isaac and Ben
0:02:04 > 0:02:09and for the Blues, we have a mum and daughter team, Karen and Becky.
0:02:09 > 0:02:12Hello, everyone. ALL: Hello!
0:02:12 > 0:02:14You all look absolutely lovely.
0:02:14 > 0:02:17So, Ben, you two are brothers,
0:02:17 > 0:02:19but where do you come in the pecking order?
0:02:19 > 0:02:21There's six brothers in total. Six brothers?! Yeah.
0:02:21 > 0:02:24I'm the oldest and then we've got the second oldest.
0:02:24 > 0:02:25Right, who's the boss, though?
0:02:25 > 0:02:28It's definitely got to be me. It's got to be you.
0:02:28 > 0:02:30Although, today it's his birthday, so he can be the boss.
0:02:30 > 0:02:32Oh, what age are you?
0:02:32 > 0:02:3422. Oh, he's 22!
0:02:34 > 0:02:36Isn't he a lovely 22-year-old? He is. I'm in my prime.
0:02:36 > 0:02:38Ah, he's in his prime.
0:02:38 > 0:02:40Yeah, you're gorgeous, gorgeous. Oh, thank you.
0:02:40 > 0:02:44Now, you have a lovely wife.
0:02:44 > 0:02:47I do. I know. And her name is Emily
0:02:47 > 0:02:52and you carry her not just in your heart, but on your arm.
0:02:52 > 0:02:58Tell me about that. I do carry her a lot, but, no, I do have a tattoo.
0:02:58 > 0:03:01I got this quite a while back.
0:03:01 > 0:03:04The reason I got it is because my fingers got too fat
0:03:04 > 0:03:07for my wedding ring once I'd got married.
0:03:07 > 0:03:10So I decided that a good compromise would be to get a tattoo instead.
0:03:10 > 0:03:13Oh, and there she is and she's always with you.
0:03:13 > 0:03:15Now, Isaac, over to you.
0:03:15 > 0:03:19You're studying accountancy? Account and finance.
0:03:19 > 0:03:23Yeah. But you've also got a wee sort of glamorous sideline.
0:03:23 > 0:03:26I work in a cocktail bar on the side, just to pay the bills.
0:03:26 > 0:03:30Is there a special action you have for the shaking?
0:03:30 > 0:03:32Is the shaking important? Most of it's in the hips,
0:03:32 > 0:03:36most of it's in the hips. All right. Give it a little shake, like this.
0:03:36 > 0:03:39Oh, right! That's how I do it, just a little bit of magic.
0:03:39 > 0:03:41So it's not just an arm action?
0:03:41 > 0:03:44Oh, no, it's all in the hips.
0:03:44 > 0:03:48So, boys, what are your tactics going to be today?
0:03:48 > 0:03:51Well, I'm going to try and find the most ugly thing possible
0:03:51 > 0:03:52for the cheapest price.
0:03:52 > 0:03:55Not necessarily buy things that we would want in our own homes,
0:03:55 > 0:03:59but buy things that we think those that are attending the auction
0:03:59 > 0:04:04will want to buy. So, you've done your homework, you want to win.
0:04:04 > 0:04:07Oh, yeah, were definitely going to get the golden gavel,
0:04:07 > 0:04:09even if we need to steal it from these guys!
0:04:09 > 0:04:11No way! No!
0:04:11 > 0:04:12So, that's the Red team.
0:04:12 > 0:04:17Over to the Blue team, mum and daughter, Karen and Becky.
0:04:17 > 0:04:21Now, Karen, you have a very unlikely job for a gal.
0:04:21 > 0:04:22Tell me a little bit about it.
0:04:22 > 0:04:26I'm a motorbike parts specialist. Mm-hm.
0:04:26 > 0:04:29It's an online business, I sell all over the world,
0:04:29 > 0:04:32which is a bit unusual for a lady to be doing,
0:04:32 > 0:04:35but it was my husband's fault.
0:04:35 > 0:04:38He's actually been in the motorbike trade a long, long time
0:04:38 > 0:04:40and one of his customers was selling a business,
0:04:40 > 0:04:42so rather than a bunch of flowers,
0:04:42 > 0:04:45I got a motorcycle parts business instead.
0:04:45 > 0:04:48Are you crazy about bikes? Not as crazy as I should be.
0:04:48 > 0:04:50I love sitting on the back of one, you know,
0:04:50 > 0:04:54ride for miles on the back, but not myself, no.
0:04:54 > 0:04:58Now, Becky, you're a student of psychology.
0:04:58 > 0:04:59What attracted you to psychology?
0:04:59 > 0:05:03I am. I find it so interesting, just how the mind works,
0:05:03 > 0:05:05why people do things.
0:05:05 > 0:05:07I just love the idea that there's no true answer,
0:05:07 > 0:05:09it's always new ideas,
0:05:09 > 0:05:12new research, so it's really good. Yeah, it's great fun.
0:05:12 > 0:05:16Now, I hear you two are keen pub quizzers.
0:05:16 > 0:05:17We do. Yes, we are. We love it.
0:05:17 > 0:05:20We've got quite a good pub quiz team name.
0:05:20 > 0:05:22It's the Not-So-Dumb Blondes.
0:05:22 > 0:05:25Not-So-Dumb Blondes, boys!
0:05:25 > 0:05:28This week, we did change the name, we were Bargain Blondes.
0:05:28 > 0:05:31A little tribute to this show. Oh, wonderful! Did you win?

0:05:39 > 0:05:42If I want to buy it, it's got to look good in my own house.
0:05:42 > 0:05:45Ah. Anything girlie, silver, like jewellery.
0:05:45 > 0:05:47Well, you girls know what you want to buy,
0:05:47 > 0:05:50so I'd better give you folks some money.
0:05:50 > 0:05:53We have ?300 for you, girls... Thank you.

0:05:59 > 0:06:02I've got the feeling we've got a real competition on our hands today.
0:06:05 > 0:06:09Our competitive teams need a couple of very talented experts.
0:06:09 > 0:06:13Teaching the Reds a thing or two, it's Caroline Hawley...
0:06:13 > 0:06:17and busting a move for the Blues, it's Philip Serrell.
0:06:19 > 0:06:22Ben, Isaac, what are you looking for today?
0:06:22 > 0:06:26Niche items, very ugly. I want some silver, jewellery.
0:06:26 > 0:06:28I was thinking big, wood, metal, that sort of thing.
0:06:28 > 0:06:30Stop! No. Stop! No. No.
0:06:30 > 0:06:32Pink, girlie, pretty.
0:06:32 > 0:06:35Something that's big, cast-iron, but again, ugly.
0:06:35 > 0:06:37OK! Ugly's what we're after.
0:06:37 > 0:06:41KAREN: Pretty, pink. Pink? Pink. Two words - pretty, pink.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54I bet you are!
0:06:54 > 0:06:58So, it's ugly for the Reds and pretty for the Blues.
0:06:58 > 0:07:00Good luck, experts.
0:07:00 > 0:07:01Does it have to be ugly?
0:07:01 > 0:07:04It can be pretty, pretty is always good.
0:07:04 > 0:07:05Is pretty good?
0:07:05 > 0:07:07Ugly is a relative term.
0:07:07 > 0:07:09See, these are quite ugly. Are they ugly?
0:07:09 > 0:07:12They are andirons, you'd put your fire irons on them.
0:07:12 > 0:07:14Yeah, exactly. Depends how good-looking...

0:07:20 > 0:07:2215? Yeah.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28Thank you very much. Cheers, pal. Cheers. CAROLINE: Thank you.
0:07:28 > 0:07:30One for the back burner
0:07:30 > 0:07:34and it looks like the Blues are giving Philip a lesson in pink.
0:07:34 > 0:07:37Isn't pink just pink? No, pink is not just pink.
0:07:37 > 0:07:40You've got baby pink... Salmon pink. ..loads of different shades of pink.
0:07:40 > 0:07:43Really? We should get three different shades for our products.
0:07:43 > 0:07:45Really? Yes. Yeah, we should.
0:07:45 > 0:07:49While Philip's education continues, the Reds have found something.
0:07:49 > 0:07:52Ah, so, it's bound all the way round... Yeah.
0:07:52 > 0:07:55..so there's no glue, it's stapled.
0:07:55 > 0:07:58I could see that planted up with primulas, daffodils,
0:07:58 > 0:08:00whatever's in season. I quite like that.
0:08:00 > 0:08:02I've got a lot of teak items in my house,

0:08:08 > 0:08:09You've got a ticket on here of ?40,
0:08:09 > 0:08:11what's the best price you could do on it?
0:08:11 > 0:08:14I can do it for ?30. CAROLINE: Yeah? What do we think of this, Isaac?
0:08:14 > 0:08:17I think it's pretty good, but then again,
0:08:17 > 0:08:18I wouldn't pay 30 for it, though.
0:08:18 > 0:08:21Best price 30, I don't think I could pay that.
0:08:21 > 0:08:23Could you do it for 25?

0:09:05 > 0:09:06They're really pink.
0:09:06 > 0:09:10What do you think you're going to make at auction?
0:09:10 > 0:09:13I think somebody'd pay ?40 for them.
0:09:13 > 0:09:16I think you're deluded! Somebody with more money than sense.
0:09:16 > 0:09:19Yeah. And I think I might just be with them.
0:09:19 > 0:09:21Or someone might just fall in love with them, like we have. Yeah.
0:09:21 > 0:09:24They're old cans, aren't they? But how much are they each?
0:09:24 > 0:09:27They might only be ?10 for the pair. There's... I'm dreading this.
0:09:27 > 0:09:29He's on his phone now, look.
0:09:29 > 0:09:32How much are these...? SELLER: 35.
0:09:32 > 0:09:34How much? 35.
0:09:34 > 0:09:35Each?
0:09:35 > 0:09:37BECKY: Would you be able to do 30 for two?
0:09:37 > 0:09:39SELLER: No.
0:09:39 > 0:09:42What's your real, real, real lowest?
0:09:42 > 0:09:44?40, I'll take.
0:09:44 > 0:09:47BECKY: We love them, we'd regret it if we didn't buy them. Yeah.
0:09:47 > 0:09:51Go on, that'll be our... That's our splashing out. Yeah.
0:09:51 > 0:09:52Splashing out, best product.
0:09:52 > 0:09:56I'll let you be the expert on the next buy. Is that right? Yes.
0:09:56 > 0:09:58This is my little bit of frivolous.
0:09:58 > 0:10:01We'll have them for the 40. SELLER: OK.
0:10:01 > 0:10:05Philip is in a lot of pain, but the girls are rocking!
0:10:05 > 0:10:08Seven minutes in and they have their first item.
0:10:08 > 0:10:10Let's go inside because hopefully
0:10:10 > 0:10:12there might be some old things in there.
0:10:12 > 0:10:15They might be pink as well. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
0:10:17 > 0:10:18The Reds have the same idea,
0:10:18 > 0:10:21but it looks like the Blues have spotted something first,
0:10:21 > 0:10:24although THAT'S not very pretty!
0:10:24 > 0:10:26Think of it as a coffee table.
0:10:26 > 0:10:29It doesn't look like a coffee table, it looks like a crate.
0:10:29 > 0:10:31You could put a piece of glass on that
0:10:31 > 0:10:34with the suckers on and that would look really, really good.
0:10:34 > 0:10:35You could put a piece of glass on a brick,
0:10:35 > 0:10:38it doesn't make it a coffee table. You can paint it pink.
0:10:38 > 0:10:40Oh, I could paint it pink!
0:10:40 > 0:10:42There you go, pink. No, that was a joke, honest.
0:10:42 > 0:10:43THEY LAUGH
0:10:43 > 0:10:45Think about it. This is the first... Yeah, we'll have a think,
0:10:45 > 0:10:48but I do like that. Let's have a wander round.
0:10:48 > 0:10:52That box has Philip written all over it, but one to ponder.
0:10:52 > 0:10:55Have the Reds found anything ugly enough?
0:10:55 > 0:10:58Oh, wow, this is really ugly!
0:10:58 > 0:11:00Which one's that? Have you seen this here? This one.
0:11:00 > 0:11:03Pick it up. Is this Troika?
0:11:03 > 0:11:07No, it looks like it very much could be. Let's have a look.
0:11:07 > 0:11:10It's really interesting, but still very ugly.
0:11:10 > 0:11:13No, I don't think it is. It is very ugly.
0:11:13 > 0:11:15Do you want me to see if I can find the owner?
0:11:15 > 0:11:18Yeah, let's see if we can get a price on it.
0:11:18 > 0:11:21What price would you like it to be? Well, depends who made it. 15?
0:11:21 > 0:11:23Right, yeah, let's go and have a look. Hang on.
0:11:23 > 0:11:26While Caroline goes off to find the price of the vase,
0:11:26 > 0:11:28it's over to the Blues,
0:11:28 > 0:11:32but that's not something I often see Philip holding.
0:11:32 > 0:11:36This is a little silver powder compact and it's...
0:11:36 > 0:11:38pink... Yes, perfect.
0:11:38 > 0:11:41..which, as we know, is a key selling feature. It is.
0:11:41 > 0:11:44This is engine-turned decoration, which is under the enamel,
0:11:44 > 0:11:45on the silver.
0:11:45 > 0:11:48Now, you don't want spend much money, do you?
0:11:48 > 0:11:51No. Not at all. So, what would you spend on that?
0:11:51 > 0:11:54?50, ?60? Yeah, about the same.
0:11:54 > 0:11:57Maybe 30, 40. I'm a bit tight.
0:11:58 > 0:12:00Oh!
0:12:00 > 0:12:03I might like pink, but maybe not that much. Yeah.
0:12:03 > 0:12:04Thank you very much, thank you.
0:12:04 > 0:12:06Ouch! ?180.
0:12:06 > 0:12:10It's lovely, but outside the girls' price range -
0:12:10 > 0:12:14and, talking of prices, what's the story on the Reds' vase?
0:12:14 > 0:12:17Right, I'm asking for it...
0:12:17 > 0:12:18Yes? ..?45.
0:12:18 > 0:12:22That... That's just way higher than we thought it would be.
0:12:22 > 0:12:25It's a nice piece, I'm sure someone will buy it to put in their home,
0:12:25 > 0:12:28but we're here to win Bargain Hunt, we need to find some bargains.
0:12:28 > 0:12:31These guys are ruthless Bargain Hunters,
0:12:31 > 0:12:36so it's a no to the vase, but what have the Blues found now?
0:12:36 > 0:12:39Feathers. Are these ostrich feathers?
0:12:39 > 0:12:42We've got a theme of birds.
0:12:42 > 0:12:45Feeling the heat? How much is that?
0:12:45 > 0:12:4735. 35.
0:12:47 > 0:12:49What will this be?
0:12:49 > 0:12:52That, I think, is probably plastic.
0:12:52 > 0:12:54Let's put you on the spot now.
0:12:54 > 0:12:57I appreciate that pink is probably your forte... Pink is. Yes.
0:12:57 > 0:13:00..but what do you think that's going to make at auction?
0:13:00 > 0:13:03It depends who wants it because, at the moment, all the retro's back,
0:13:03 > 0:13:06isn't it? Yeah. Yeah, I think it would go for quite a lot at auction.
0:13:06 > 0:13:09I think you would get 35... Do you? ..?40 for that.
0:13:09 > 0:13:10So, if you could buy that,
0:13:10 > 0:13:13just find out what the best you can do it for is.
0:13:13 > 0:13:16The stallholder is a bit camera shy.
0:13:16 > 0:13:18What's your very, very best?
0:13:18 > 0:13:19STALLHOLDER: 20.
0:13:19 > 0:13:22I know it's only ?1, could you do it at 19?
0:13:22 > 0:13:24Thank you. Thank you so much.
0:13:24 > 0:13:26We'll have that, thank you.
0:13:28 > 0:13:32That's great! 25 minutes in and item two is in the bag
0:13:32 > 0:13:36and they're sticking to their plan, but what does Philip think?
0:13:36 > 0:13:38There's no doubt it's a little bit restricting
0:13:38 > 0:13:42if you only like pink things, but you know, they're doing OK.
0:13:42 > 0:13:45The thing is, two items bought, we've only spent 60 quid.
0:13:45 > 0:13:48We've got ?240 left, and I've got a feeling
0:13:48 > 0:13:51they're not going to let me spend very much money.
0:13:51 > 0:13:53They may not be big spenders,
0:13:53 > 0:13:56but they know what they like and that's no bad thing.
0:13:56 > 0:13:59But the Reds are getting a bit cultured.
0:13:59 > 0:14:03Wow, that's fifth position in ballet, I think!
0:14:03 > 0:14:05Fifth? Yeah, first, second...
0:14:05 > 0:14:09Yeah, I think I've done that. ..third, fourth, fifth.
0:14:09 > 0:14:13Oh, wow! Yeah, fifth position. Well, I only knew the fifth.
0:14:13 > 0:14:16The base seems solid, but the legs themselves are hollow.
0:14:16 > 0:14:20What's it made of? It feels tinny.
0:14:20 > 0:14:23But it's not very heavy. I think they're trying to be bronze.
0:14:23 > 0:14:27I mean, it's an interesting piece. Even the base is laminated.
0:14:27 > 0:14:29Now, it's ?95.
0:14:29 > 0:14:31I think...
0:14:31 > 0:14:33it's fairly modern.
0:14:33 > 0:14:36I don't think it's brand-spanking-new.
0:14:36 > 0:14:38I'm just trying to think how many people into ballet
0:14:38 > 0:14:40are going to be at this auction.
0:14:40 > 0:14:42Even if they're not into ballet, they might like it,
0:14:42 > 0:14:44because it's a bit of a quirky piece.
0:14:44 > 0:14:46It is! It's a very quirky piece!
0:14:46 > 0:14:49Shall we make a cheeky offer? I think try your cheekiest.
0:14:49 > 0:14:52Is he cheeky? He's the cheekiest person I know.
0:14:52 > 0:14:54Is he? Shall we get the seller over?
0:14:54 > 0:14:57You be cheeky alone. We're going to stop here. OK.
0:14:57 > 0:14:59SELLER: Go on, what's your cheekiest?
0:14:59 > 0:15:01I'll be very cheeky, but please don't be offended. OK. Go on.
0:15:01 > 0:15:04You've got it listed for 95. Would you take 60?
0:15:04 > 0:15:06Er...
0:15:06 > 0:15:09I can do it for 65.
0:15:09 > 0:15:11Can I be even cheekier and ask for another ?5 off
0:15:11 > 0:15:13cos it's my birthday, so ?60?
0:15:13 > 0:15:15Oh, well, if you don't ask, you don't get.
0:15:15 > 0:15:17Seeing as it's your birthday, that's fine.
0:15:17 > 0:15:19Thank you so much! Cheers. OK.
0:15:19 > 0:15:21Really happy with that, thank you.
0:15:21 > 0:15:23Cheers. Thank you. And have a nice birthday. Yeah, thanks.
0:15:23 > 0:15:27What an item! 32 minutes in and they have item two.
0:15:27 > 0:15:29Well done!
0:15:29 > 0:15:30And it looks like Philip is at last
0:15:30 > 0:15:33getting into the Blues' way of thinking.
0:15:33 > 0:15:35You see, I'm drawn to this cos it's pink.
0:15:35 > 0:15:39Oh, are you coming on to our side? I am, yeah. Pink is the word.
0:15:39 > 0:15:42It's a bit...shabby, though, isn't it? Shabby pink.
0:15:42 > 0:15:44Yeah, it's more... Do you think that's the way forward?
0:15:44 > 0:15:46No, more shabby than pink, we've got here.
0:15:46 > 0:15:49It's not a buy, but I feel Philip is changing.
0:15:49 > 0:15:52Miracles do happen!
0:15:52 > 0:15:54But what has Ben found now?
0:15:54 > 0:15:56What do we think? I think you look great!
0:15:56 > 0:15:59They look really good! SELLER: 20 quid.
0:15:59 > 0:16:01Have we got a mirror? Yes, we do. Yep, you have.
0:16:01 > 0:16:04CAROLINE: Yes, yes!
0:16:04 > 0:16:07They're classic Dior, and even at ?20,
0:16:07 > 0:16:09I don't think they'll make a profit at auction.
0:16:09 > 0:16:13Meanwhile, back with the Blues, are my eyes deceiving me?
0:16:13 > 0:16:16Are they really considering the crate?
0:16:16 > 0:16:18I really, really like that crate.
0:16:18 > 0:16:21I like the crate, I'll be honest. I can see its potential.
0:16:21 > 0:16:23I can't see potential. There is another issue.
0:16:23 > 0:16:27The issue is you've now got ten minutes left
0:16:27 > 0:16:29and you've got to spend some money, so...
0:16:29 > 0:16:34Right, five minutes here, within sight of this stall at all times.
0:16:34 > 0:16:36I don't do running. I just don't want the crate!
0:16:36 > 0:16:39Well, there's your incentive. It's a generational thing, isn't it?
0:16:39 > 0:16:40It is.
0:16:40 > 0:16:42Yes, ten minutes to go
0:16:42 > 0:16:44and you need something prettier than that crate, girls!
0:16:44 > 0:16:46But something has got the Reds excited.
0:16:46 > 0:16:48How hideous is that?!
0:16:48 > 0:16:50Oh... Seriously!
0:16:50 > 0:16:53Probably the ugliest thing we've seen all day.
0:16:53 > 0:16:55Seriously, the stuff of nightmares!
0:16:55 > 0:17:00So, it's a, it's a bar money box... Yeah. ..usually smashed.
0:17:00 > 0:17:03It's got a ticket on of 65.
0:17:03 > 0:17:06What sort of offer do you think we should make on it?
0:17:06 > 0:17:08Well...
0:17:08 > 0:17:11I think that side's prettier than the front, really.
0:17:11 > 0:17:13I think... BEN LAUGHS
0:17:13 > 0:17:15I think... Oh, no, there's a plug. Oh, there is!
0:17:15 > 0:17:17And it's at... That's where you get your money out.
0:17:17 > 0:17:20But it says usually smashed. It's a modern plug, isn't it?
0:17:20 > 0:17:21Yeah, that looks a bit of a...
0:17:21 > 0:17:23It's a modern plug, it's not smashed. Pop that back in.
0:17:23 > 0:17:26It's really ugly... ?40. ..it's not loads of money.
0:17:26 > 0:17:28It's ?40 worth of chalk, that.
0:17:28 > 0:17:30?40 worth of chalk. Where do you think that's going to end up?
0:17:30 > 0:17:32It might go in a big farmhouse kitchen.
0:17:32 > 0:17:37Yeah... Yeah. Well, do you want to go and see if you can find the owner
0:17:37 > 0:17:38of this fine thing? I will.
0:17:38 > 0:17:40Do you want to wait here and I'll go find them?
0:17:40 > 0:17:42Yeah, go and find them.
0:17:42 > 0:17:46It's just what they wanted, so fingers crossed.
0:17:46 > 0:17:48The Blues are not sticking to their plan.
0:17:48 > 0:17:50That is a branch. It's a nice branch.
0:17:50 > 0:17:53Put it back, it's not a nice branch! It's a nice branch.
0:17:53 > 0:17:56I can get you one off the tree outside. We're not having that.
0:17:56 > 0:17:59So, what's the news on the Guinness pig?
0:17:59 > 0:18:00?50.
0:18:00 > 0:18:03?50 is the best that he can do.
0:18:03 > 0:18:06I'm... I'm happy at that. I'm happy to pay ?50 for it.
0:18:06 > 0:18:08Well, it fulfils all the criteria, doesn't it?
0:18:08 > 0:18:12Most ugliest thing I've seen. It's so ugly.
0:18:12 > 0:18:14So, do you want to go with it? Yeah, totally.
0:18:14 > 0:18:16I think we should go with it. ?50, let's do it. Third buy done!
0:18:16 > 0:18:19Let's go, guys. Whoo! Well done, you! Yes!
0:18:19 > 0:18:22Whoa, they have all three items with ten minutes to spare,
0:18:22 > 0:18:25but it sounds like Caroline has her own plan.
0:18:25 > 0:18:28I'm going to spend the rest of the money on something beautiful.
0:18:28 > 0:18:31What happened to ugly?! What?!
0:18:31 > 0:18:34Now, can the Blues find something just as special?
0:18:34 > 0:18:37Oh, I like this.
0:18:37 > 0:18:39What's that? Oh, that's pretty.
0:18:39 > 0:18:41I think it's a belt. A belt? No, no.
0:18:41 > 0:18:44It wouldn't go around my waist, would it, look? No.
0:18:44 > 0:18:47I don't think it would go round anybody's waist.
0:18:47 > 0:18:50No, to go around their neck because it's a collar, look. Oh.
0:18:53 > 0:18:55There we go. There you go,
0:18:55 > 0:18:57you fit in with the team now, very beautiful.
0:18:57 > 0:19:00I like that! Do you? Yes. I really like it, yeah.
0:19:00 > 0:19:01How much is it?
0:19:01 > 0:19:05It's ?70 and ticket says it's a belt, but who knows?
0:19:05 > 0:19:0765?
0:19:07 > 0:19:09That's what we can do. BECKY: I would rather go for that
0:19:09 > 0:19:11cos I just do not want the crate.
0:19:11 > 0:19:15The thing is, it's not pink and it's worrying me, this.
0:19:15 > 0:19:18But it's pretty. It's nice and floral, decorative, necklace,
0:19:18 > 0:19:20still very girlie.
0:19:20 > 0:19:22Is 65 the best?
0:19:22 > 0:19:24SELLER: Yeah. What do you both think? I like it.
0:19:24 > 0:19:26BECKY: I'm very happy with it, I love it.
0:19:26 > 0:19:28Shake the man's hand. Yes. SELLER: OK, thank you very much.
0:19:28 > 0:19:29Thank you. Thank you.
0:19:29 > 0:19:34Fabulous! With minutes to spare, they've bought their final item.
0:19:34 > 0:19:37Sorry to be a BOAR, teams, but your time's up.
0:19:37 > 0:19:38GONG SOUNDS
0:19:38 > 0:19:41Can sit and relax now, it's all over.
0:19:42 > 0:19:44You've been good sports, I've loved your company.
0:19:44 > 0:19:47Let's remind ourselves what the Reds bought.
0:19:48 > 0:19:52They snapped up the coopered bowl for ?25.
0:19:54 > 0:19:58Will the ceramic dancer's legs pirouette to a profit?
0:19:58 > 0:19:59It cost ?60.
0:20:01 > 0:20:05And can the Guinness piggy bring a profit at market?
0:20:05 > 0:20:07It was ?50.
0:20:07 > 0:20:14Well, boys, you were a bit obsessed with wanting to buy something ugly.
0:20:14 > 0:20:15What was that all about?
0:20:15 > 0:20:19Well, instead of obsessed, we could probably say focused.
0:20:19 > 0:20:23A lot of the times, people will buy things that are very obvious,
0:20:23 > 0:20:26so we thought that we would not do that.
0:20:26 > 0:20:29What was your favourite ugly item?
0:20:29 > 0:20:33Well, I can honestly say that I didn't like any of them
0:20:33 > 0:20:36apart from the wooden bowl, which I did half like.
0:20:36 > 0:20:41So, do you both agree with one another on your favourite buys?
0:20:41 > 0:20:43Yeah, definitely. Definitely agree.
0:20:43 > 0:20:46So, what item do you think's going to make the most money?
0:20:46 > 0:20:51I think the fake bronze legs on the fake...
0:20:51 > 0:20:53marble base is going to make the most money.
0:20:53 > 0:20:55Yeah, the ballerina legs. Do you agree?
0:20:55 > 0:20:57The ballerina legs in the fifth position, definitely.
0:20:57 > 0:20:59So, how much money did you spend?
0:20:59 > 0:21:02We spent, in all, ?135 all together.
0:21:02 > 0:21:05Not too bad! Can I have ?165? Yes.
0:21:05 > 0:21:06?165.
0:21:06 > 0:21:11Which I will hand over to... Thank you. ..the beautiful Caroline.
0:21:11 > 0:21:15Thank you! Are you going to buy something ugly for them?
0:21:15 > 0:21:17Do you know, I'm not, Anita?
0:21:17 > 0:21:20I'm going to buy something beautiful.
0:21:20 > 0:21:23What?! Yes, I am! I'm going to go against the grain,
0:21:23 > 0:21:26I'm going to buy something beautiful and then we'll see.
0:21:26 > 0:21:27I feel betrayed!
0:21:29 > 0:21:33Well, as Caroline goes off and buys something beautiful,
0:21:33 > 0:21:36let's remind ourselves what the Blues bought.
0:21:37 > 0:21:40Will they be in the pink with the painted flamingos?
0:21:40 > 0:21:42They were ?40.
0:21:43 > 0:21:47Could the girlie ostrich-feather fan bring a profit?
0:21:47 > 0:21:49It was ?19.
0:21:50 > 0:21:55And can the pretty Art Nouveau belt, or is it a choker, wow the bidders?
0:21:55 > 0:21:57It was ?65.
0:21:57 > 0:22:01Girls, did you have a lovely time? We did. We had a great time.
0:22:01 > 0:22:05And you bought pretty, girlie, pink things.
0:22:05 > 0:22:08Yes. We definitely did. Did Phil love them?
0:22:08 > 0:22:09THEY LAUGH
0:22:09 > 0:22:10He did deep down.
0:22:10 > 0:22:14We are... I'm now a fully paid-up member of the pink team.
0:22:15 > 0:22:18Now, tell me, what was your favourite thing?
0:22:18 > 0:22:21The pair of pink flamingos. Oh, no!
0:22:21 > 0:22:23THEY LAUGH
0:22:23 > 0:22:26What about you? I have to say the same, I did love 'em.
0:22:26 > 0:22:29Pink flamingos! Yes.
0:22:29 > 0:22:33But what item is going to make the most profit at auction?
0:22:33 > 0:22:35I think the fan.
0:22:35 > 0:22:37The fan? Yes, yes.
0:22:37 > 0:22:40I think the silver floral choker that we bought.
0:22:40 > 0:22:43Right, yeah. So, how much did you spend?
0:22:43 > 0:22:49?124. 124, so you were a wee bit careful and canny with your money.
0:22:49 > 0:22:52Yeah, I like to hold on to it. Yes. All right, OK.
0:22:52 > 0:22:55Well, give me ?176.
0:22:55 > 0:22:56Thank you.
0:22:56 > 0:23:01Phil, now that you're a fully paid-up member in the pink team,
0:23:01 > 0:23:03what are you going to spend all that money on?
0:23:03 > 0:23:07Well, it might not be pink, but it will be...
0:23:07 > 0:23:09ladylike.
0:23:09 > 0:23:11Not wooden?
0:23:11 > 0:23:14Not wooden, not metal, sort of...
0:23:14 > 0:23:15hint of pink.
0:23:17 > 0:23:20So, while Phil goes out to look for something girlie,
0:23:20 > 0:23:24I'm going to take you for a walk on the wild side.
0:23:27 > 0:23:30We've crossed the border into Cheshire
0:23:30 > 0:23:34and I want to take you to its most famous landmark, Chester Zoo.
0:23:34 > 0:23:37Regarded as one of the best zoos in the world,
0:23:37 > 0:23:411.5 million people visit here every year,
0:23:41 > 0:23:45but the story of how it came to be is down to the ambition
0:23:45 > 0:23:48of a truly remarkable man.
0:23:48 > 0:23:52George Mottershead was a man with a vision.
0:23:52 > 0:23:55He wanted to create something ground-breaking,
0:23:55 > 0:23:57a zoo without bars,
0:23:57 > 0:24:00and it became his life's work.
0:24:01 > 0:24:04As a child, George had visited zoos,
0:24:04 > 0:24:07but vowed one day to open his own zoo,
0:24:07 > 0:24:10where animals moved around freely.
0:24:10 > 0:24:14After serving in the First World War, he and his wife, Elizabeth,
0:24:14 > 0:24:17started a market garden near Crewe.
0:24:17 > 0:24:21Here, his passion for wild animals flourished.
0:24:21 > 0:24:26I'm meeting Dr Mark Pilgrim, director-general of Chester Zoo,
0:24:26 > 0:24:27to find out more.
0:24:27 > 0:24:30He was very interested in birds and animals, always, from a child.
0:24:30 > 0:24:33And then he started to have birds in his shop and that started to attract
0:24:33 > 0:24:36more people and eventually that grew, and more birds,
0:24:36 > 0:24:38and eventually monkeys and other things and...
0:24:38 > 0:24:41In the shop! In the shop, and it was attracting enormous amounts
0:24:41 > 0:24:43of people, so it became incredibly popular.
0:24:43 > 0:24:46Good for business! Absolutely! So, what did he do?
0:24:46 > 0:24:50He borrowed ?3,500 from his parents
0:24:50 > 0:24:52and he bought this most beautiful house, here in Upton in Chester.
0:24:52 > 0:24:56Wow! Well, I just can't wait for you to show me around.
0:24:56 > 0:24:57Let's see some more.
0:24:57 > 0:25:00The zoo was created in the grounds of the house.
0:25:00 > 0:25:05George's parents, wife and two daughters all helped to build it
0:25:05 > 0:25:09and it was opened on June 10, 1931.
0:25:09 > 0:25:12George wanted to provide animals in a natural environment
0:25:12 > 0:25:15and put them behind moats, for example, behind water,
0:25:15 > 0:25:17where clearly, they can't escape,
0:25:17 > 0:25:19but actually they have much more naturalistic settings
0:25:19 > 0:25:21and a much more naturalistic enclosure,
0:25:21 > 0:25:26so he was very much passionate about giving animals much more freedom
0:25:26 > 0:25:27in their enclosures.
0:25:27 > 0:25:29And what motivated him?
0:25:29 > 0:25:33I think that George probably had a real empathy with animals.
0:25:33 > 0:25:34He understood that, actually,
0:25:34 > 0:25:39they needed space and fresh air and natural enclosures to thrive.
0:25:39 > 0:25:43But many local people protested about the zoo,
0:25:43 > 0:25:45fearing the animals would escape.
0:25:45 > 0:25:47Well, back in those early days, they were really concerned,
0:25:47 > 0:25:50this was really revolutionary, to keep animals in this way,
0:25:50 > 0:25:53behind water and moats, so, yeah,
0:25:53 > 0:25:55there was a real concern that the animals would escape
0:25:55 > 0:25:57and we take it for granted these days,
0:25:57 > 0:26:01but back then it was the way it was.
0:26:01 > 0:26:04'Many of the zoo's inhabitants became personalities
0:26:04 > 0:26:06'in their own right.'
0:26:06 > 0:26:07So, who was Pelly?
0:26:07 > 0:26:11Ah, Pelly was a pelican who just had complete free range of the zoo.
0:26:11 > 0:26:14She just walked around everywhere, into the houses,
0:26:14 > 0:26:16I'm sure she went into the main house,
0:26:16 > 0:26:18probably stole fish out of the kitchen,
0:26:18 > 0:26:22became really firm friends with June, who was George's daughter,
0:26:22 > 0:26:25almost as a pet, and they went around everywhere together.
0:26:25 > 0:26:29And I believe that there was a famous chimp, as well?
0:26:29 > 0:26:30Indeed, yeah, Mary.
0:26:30 > 0:26:34So, Mary was a chimpanzee who came in 1932.
0:26:34 > 0:26:36She was very gentle and, again, had the free run of the place
0:26:36 > 0:26:41and was doing all sorts of things and became a real local character.
0:26:41 > 0:26:43But in the first few years,
0:26:43 > 0:26:48visitor numbers were so low the zoo failed to make any money.
0:26:48 > 0:26:52George managed to win local supporters to back the project
0:26:52 > 0:26:54and, in May 1934,
0:26:54 > 0:26:57the zoo was declared a non-profit-making charity.
0:26:57 > 0:26:59It was saved!
0:26:59 > 0:27:01Well, I think it was really due to George's personality.
0:27:01 > 0:27:05He had incredible drive and vision, just an incredible personality,
0:27:05 > 0:27:08to keep going through the hardships. Perseverance. Perseverance.
0:27:10 > 0:27:14After the Second World War, the zoo's popularity really took off.
0:27:14 > 0:27:19A new marketing slogan, "Always Building," boosted visitor numbers.
0:27:19 > 0:27:21George was awarded an OBE
0:27:21 > 0:27:27and continued to work at the zoo until his death in 1978.
0:27:27 > 0:27:29His legacy really was that he changed the way that
0:27:29 > 0:27:31people thought about keeping animals.
0:27:31 > 0:27:34You know, 85 years later, we're still a charity
0:27:34 > 0:27:38and doing fantastic conservation work around the world. Yeah.
0:27:38 > 0:27:43Mark, George was a remarkable, amazing and inspiring man,
0:27:43 > 0:27:46so thank you for telling me all about him.
0:27:46 > 0:27:52But before I go, I believe you have a wee surprise in place for me?
0:27:52 > 0:27:53We certainly do, let's go and see.
0:27:57 > 0:28:02It turns out it's feeding time at the zoo and I'm in charge!
0:28:02 > 0:28:06Come on, guys, slimy sprats for breakfast.
0:28:07 > 0:28:09Here's one for you, darling.
0:28:09 > 0:28:11My little happy feet.
0:28:11 > 0:28:13Plenty for all!
0:28:13 > 0:28:16Sprats, sprats, lovely, tasty sprats!
0:28:17 > 0:28:19Wahey!
0:28:21 > 0:28:24That was amazing!
0:28:24 > 0:28:26But now it's time to head to the auction.
0:28:26 > 0:28:30Will the teams have any wild encounters today?
0:28:30 > 0:28:31Let's go and see.
0:28:41 > 0:28:45Today, we're at Peter Wilson Auctioneers in Nantwich,
0:28:45 > 0:28:47with auctioneer Robert Jones.
0:28:47 > 0:28:50It's lovely to be here, Robert. Nice to see you, Anita.
0:28:50 > 0:28:53Right, let's have a look at the Red teams lots. Mm-hm.
0:28:53 > 0:28:58Isaac and Ben, and their first lot was this huge bowl.
0:28:58 > 0:29:01This is a great decorator's lot.
0:29:01 > 0:29:04This is the sort of thing, if you've got a nice, rustic home,
0:29:04 > 0:29:05you'd have it on the floor,
0:29:05 > 0:29:07you could use it to put sort of fruit in,
0:29:07 > 0:29:10all that sort of thing. Really nice thing. Mm-hm.
0:29:10 > 0:29:12However, I don't think it's that old, Anita.
0:29:12 > 0:29:14I'm saying it's worth about ?20 or ?30.
0:29:14 > 0:29:1620 to 30.
0:29:16 > 0:29:17Well, they paid 25,
0:29:17 > 0:29:20so there's a wee chance... OK. ..that they might make a profit.
0:29:20 > 0:29:27Yep. Now, we have two gusty lads and lads like a good pair of legs.
0:29:27 > 0:29:30What do you think of this pair of legs?
0:29:30 > 0:29:32Well, I'm lost for words, actually.
0:29:32 > 0:29:33THEY LAUGH
0:29:33 > 0:29:35Again, not old, is it?
0:29:35 > 0:29:37You know, these are new, so really,
0:29:37 > 0:29:40very much a decorator's item again, and I...
0:29:40 > 0:29:44I think, really, I said these are worth around about ?30-?60.
0:29:44 > 0:29:47Well, that's not too bad, they paid ?60.
0:29:47 > 0:29:50Oh, right, OK. So they may have a chance. OK.
0:29:50 > 0:29:54The third item is this Guinness money bank.
0:29:54 > 0:29:59Guinness memorabilia is collectable, particularly the Carlton Ware.
0:29:59 > 0:30:03We see lots of that, the toucans, I'm sure everybody's seen those.
0:30:03 > 0:30:05I'm thinking about 20 to 40 on this one.
0:30:05 > 0:30:0720 to 40. Now, they paid ?50 on that.
0:30:07 > 0:30:09Oh, did they? Uh-huh, yeah.
0:30:09 > 0:30:15So... Debatable, OK. ..that could be a wee bit tricky. Yeah.
0:30:15 > 0:30:19In which case, they might need their bonus buy.
0:30:20 > 0:30:28Isaac, Ben, you left Caroline a magnificent ?165.
0:30:28 > 0:30:31Caroline, reveal what you bought!
0:30:31 > 0:30:35Well, I went out and bought the most beautiful thing I could find.
0:30:36 > 0:30:39What? Excuse me! There's more!
0:30:42 > 0:30:46Oh, wow! That is really pretty! Rather beautiful.
0:30:46 > 0:30:50Cultured pearls from the 1920s, I would think,
0:30:50 > 0:30:53and you can see they're all knotted between the pearls...
0:30:53 > 0:30:57Hand-strung. Yeah, which is a really good sign of quality
0:30:57 > 0:31:01and the clasp is 9-carat white gold... Whoa!
0:31:01 > 0:31:04..with a tiny, little diamond. Just beautiful!
0:31:04 > 0:31:07So, how much did you pay for it?
0:31:07 > 0:31:08I paid 40.
0:31:08 > 0:31:12And I think, for the quality, I think that's for nothing.
0:31:12 > 0:31:14How much do you think that it'll make at auction?
0:31:14 > 0:31:17Well, I would hope ?70, ?80.
0:31:17 > 0:31:19Brilliant! Man, I'll take that. I'm happy with that.
0:31:19 > 0:31:22You don't need to make up your mind just now.
0:31:22 > 0:31:25Wait until your first three items have been sold, but right now,
0:31:25 > 0:31:31let's see what the auctioneer thinks about Caroline's exquisite pearls.
0:31:33 > 0:31:34Do you like them?
0:31:34 > 0:31:39Well, you and I have been brought many a string of pearls
0:31:39 > 0:31:40and they have been fake.
0:31:40 > 0:31:42We can tell immediately by the lustre.
0:31:42 > 0:31:44They are pearls.
0:31:44 > 0:31:47Always have a good look at the clasp because, of course,
0:31:47 > 0:31:50some of the clasps on these can be really good.
0:31:50 > 0:31:53I'm looking at this and I'm thinking about ?50-?80.
0:31:53 > 0:31:56I think they're quite nice. 50 to 80. Mm-hm.
0:31:56 > 0:31:59Excellent! Because she only paid ?40.
0:31:59 > 0:32:02Well done, her. So, that's it for the Reds. Yep.
0:32:02 > 0:32:06Let's go onto the Blues, Becky and Karen. Yep.
0:32:06 > 0:32:07Two exotic birds...
0:32:07 > 0:32:08HE LAUGHS
0:32:08 > 0:32:10..and they bought these two exotic birds here.
0:32:10 > 0:32:13Well, as I was walking through the saleroom earlier on,
0:32:13 > 0:32:16there were two people that really liked the look of them.
0:32:16 > 0:32:18"We collect these," they said. Mm-hm.
0:32:18 > 0:32:21So we might be in with a chance on them after all, you know.
0:32:21 > 0:32:23What was your estimate? 20 to 40.
0:32:23 > 0:32:25They've paid ?40. Did they?
0:32:25 > 0:32:29They could give us a wee surprise. Who knows?
0:32:29 > 0:32:32Second item... Yep. ..a lot more traditional item,
0:32:32 > 0:32:35is the ostrich-feather fan.
0:32:35 > 0:32:40This is very small and, of course, the sticks are made out of plastic.
0:32:40 > 0:32:43Not quite the same thing. It's a mother-of-pearl look.
0:32:43 > 0:32:48Yeah, exactly, so I've said, modestly, ?20-?30 on that.
0:32:48 > 0:32:51Well, that's not too bad because they paid 19...
0:32:51 > 0:32:53Oh, right, OK. ..for that.
0:32:53 > 0:32:59Our third item is this Art Nouveau belt, white metal,
0:32:59 > 0:33:01but it has these beautiful links
0:33:01 > 0:33:06and this lovely portrait of a young female figure on the clasp.
0:33:06 > 0:33:08Do you like it? I love this.
0:33:08 > 0:33:12I think the casting is absolutely super, I love the links.
0:33:12 > 0:33:15Everything about it is just right, it's a lovely thing.
0:33:15 > 0:33:17I've put ?50-?80 on it.
0:33:17 > 0:33:19Well, they paid ?65, so...
0:33:19 > 0:33:22Did they? Hm. ..they may make a profit on that.
0:33:22 > 0:33:24Yeah, no, I think that's all right, actually.
0:33:24 > 0:33:26I like it, it's a good thing.
0:33:26 > 0:33:30So, our mum and daughter may or may not need their bonus buy,
0:33:30 > 0:33:32but we're going to go and have a look at it anyway.
0:33:34 > 0:33:39Becky, Karen, you gave our Philip ?176.
0:33:39 > 0:33:43Philip, what did you buy with the money?
0:33:43 > 0:33:45Well, I walked round the fair
0:33:45 > 0:33:50and you are girlie girlies and I met this really lovely girl...
0:33:50 > 0:33:53and, on the way here, well, she lost her head, really.
0:33:56 > 0:33:58Oh, dear!
0:33:58 > 0:34:01She was a very girlie girl and she's a figure...
0:34:01 > 0:34:05modelled by Ruth Van Ruyckevelt for the Worcester porcelain factory
0:34:05 > 0:34:08and it's from a limited edition of Victorian figure ladies
0:34:08 > 0:34:11and I paid ?50 for her.
0:34:11 > 0:34:15What actually happened was that, on the way here...
0:34:15 > 0:34:17she got broken.
0:34:17 > 0:34:20She would have been really nice, but...
0:34:20 > 0:34:23She was really pretty.
0:34:23 > 0:34:25What we do now?
0:34:25 > 0:34:30Well, this is a very unusual occurrence and, in this case,
0:34:30 > 0:34:34we're going to go to our auctioneer and seek his advice.
0:34:36 > 0:34:38This is Philip's bonus buy.
0:34:38 > 0:34:41It's a Worcester figure and, unfortunately,
0:34:41 > 0:34:43it has been damaged in transit.
0:34:43 > 0:34:46Robert, what we going to do with that?
0:34:46 > 0:34:47Well, it's a tragedy, isn't it?
0:34:47 > 0:34:51And, clearly, we can't sell it now, which is awful.
0:34:51 > 0:34:54All I'd say is that if it were in perfect condition,
0:34:54 > 0:34:58my estimate on this would be ?30-?50.
0:34:58 > 0:35:00So, what I would like to do
0:35:00 > 0:35:04in the difficult situation that we are placed in,
0:35:04 > 0:35:08is to say that we would pay out ?50, top estimate,
0:35:08 > 0:35:13as if it were an insurance valuation and see if that's acceptable.
0:35:13 > 0:35:17Well, that sounds very fair, Robert. I'll have a wee chat with the team
0:35:17 > 0:35:21about it and they can make their decision on it.
0:35:21 > 0:35:23You're our auctioneer today? I am.
0:35:23 > 0:35:25Well, I'm looking forward to that.
0:35:25 > 0:35:27At ?20, the bid is there.
0:35:27 > 0:35:29?20, it's going to be sold.
0:35:29 > 0:35:31At ?20, then, if you're all finished...
0:35:32 > 0:35:36Are you excited? Very excited. Super excited. Pumped!
0:35:36 > 0:35:39Ready. Excited. Excellent, excellent.
0:35:39 > 0:35:42Have you been to an auction before? I have been to an auction before.
0:35:42 > 0:35:44Never, I'm looking forward to this.
0:35:44 > 0:35:47It's looking pretty good. Auction virgin. Yeah.
0:35:47 > 0:35:50Well, your first item is that super big Asian bowl
0:35:50 > 0:35:53and it's coming up right now.

0:36:04 > 0:36:06At 20 only, then, at 20, all finished and done?
0:36:06 > 0:36:08At 20 then...

0:38:13 > 0:38:16Don't be glum, don't be glum. No, quite happy with that.
0:38:16 > 0:38:18Could be a winning score, boys. Seen worse.
