0:00:33 > 0:00:35Let's go Bargain Hunting!

0:01:01 > 0:01:04The Royal Welsh Showground here in Builth Wells

0:01:04 > 0:01:10is today home to a HUGE antiques fair and there are over 1,000 stalls

0:01:10 > 0:01:14from which our teams can choose. Now, all the Reds and Blues

0:01:14 > 0:01:18have to do is spend £300 on three items in 60 minutes.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21Pretty simple. So, let's see what's in store.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24Coming up on today's show...

0:01:24 > 0:01:26The Reds know what they don't want.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28- What about these?- No.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31- I got the feeling there was an immediate no from you.- Yeah, no.

0:01:31 > 0:01:33- No.- Too much money?- Yeah.- No?

0:01:34 > 0:01:37And the Blues know what they really want.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40- Shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny. - Oh, shiny, shiny, shiny.- Shiny!

0:01:40 > 0:01:43- Shiny!- Yeah, I like that a lot. - Shiny.- It IS shiny!

0:01:43 > 0:01:47- But will the Reds... - Yes!- Hurray.- Well done.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50- ..or the Blues...- Come on! - LAUGHTER

0:01:50 > 0:01:53..have the outcome they want at the auction?

0:01:53 > 0:01:57But that's all for later. It's now time to meet today's teams.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00For the Reds, we have mother and daughter Jo and Amanda

0:02:00 > 0:02:02and, for the Blues, partners Helen and Mark.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04- Hello, everybody. - ALL: Hello.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07We're going straight to the Reds to start and straight to you,

0:02:07 > 0:02:10daughter Amanda. Now, I can't help but notice your red-and-blue hair.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12Was that for the occasion, Amanda?

0:02:12 > 0:02:14Yeah, yeah. Well, it's always coloured these days,

0:02:14 > 0:02:16- but it's Bargain Hunt hair. - It is, it is!

0:02:16 > 0:02:20- It's a new style. Where's yours? - I know, I did think of it!

0:02:20 > 0:02:21Tell us, what inspired you

0:02:21 > 0:02:23to bring mum Jo along as your team-mate today?

0:02:23 > 0:02:26We don't have much of a crossover on TV programmes that we like,

0:02:26 > 0:02:28but we both like Bargain Hunt.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31- OK.- And I thought it'd be good to come along here, have a bit of fun,

0:02:31 > 0:02:34a bit of mother-daughter bonding and do something different together.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37OK, so do you go Bargain Hunting in real life together?

0:02:37 > 0:02:40Charity shops we do, don't we, quite a bit.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43And we have done boot fairs in the past.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46And I'm going to ask you about your kids, because you're a mum of two,

0:02:46 > 0:02:49- so that must keep you busy? - I am, Seve's one and Kiko's eight.

0:02:49 > 0:02:53We do lots of things, go out, lots of places and lots of cookery

0:02:53 > 0:02:56- and stuff like that, but we also love music.- And, I believe, Amanda,

0:02:56 > 0:02:58you're especially looking forward to the auction.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00Yes, it's on my bucket list, actually.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03Oh, really? So do you think that, as a seller,

0:03:03 > 0:03:06you'll be more excited than you would be as a buyer?

0:03:06 > 0:03:08- I think, when we make lots of money, we'll be very excited.- Ah!

0:03:08 > 0:03:12Now, tell me, Jo, you're retired, but what was it that you did

0:03:12 > 0:03:15- in your career? - I was a medical secretary for...

0:03:15 > 0:03:18well, nearly 19 years before I retired.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21Well, you were looking forward to a quiet retirement and then,

0:03:21 > 0:03:24- Amanda had two boys.- Yeah!- So now, I'm sure you're equally busy.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26Tell us, as a team, mother and daughter,

0:03:26 > 0:03:27obviously you get along very well,

0:03:27 > 0:03:30but do you think you'll work well together during that 60 minutes?

0:03:30 > 0:03:32- Um?- No!

0:03:32 > 0:03:34LAUGHTER

0:03:34 > 0:03:37Well, I'm sure you'll do absolutely brilliantly, so good luck.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39Helen, tell us how you and Mark met.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43- How did you get together?- Met in our local pub about 13 years ago.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45Instant connection. Became friends.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48A couple of holidays and the rest is history.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51- We've been together now for quite a while.- I love it!

0:03:51 > 0:03:53And tell us what you do for a living, Helen.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55So I'm a manager within a finance company,

0:03:55 > 0:03:58so I look after around about 70 people.

0:03:58 > 0:04:02That's not stress-free. How on earth do you unwind at home?

0:04:02 > 0:04:04Well, I've got a little girl, I've got a two-year-old,

0:04:04 > 0:04:07so most of my time, I come home from, in theory,

0:04:07 > 0:04:09one job and then go straight into the other one.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12Mark stays at home and looks after her all day,

0:04:12 > 0:04:14so typically, when I get home, it's over to me.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17But, Mark, I believe that you are every woman's dream,

0:04:17 > 0:04:20because, when Helen comes home, dinner's ready and on the table.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22- Come on, tell us about that. - It is most of the time, yes.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25Well, I was a pastry chef for 18 years.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27A pastry chef, how good is that?

0:04:27 > 0:04:30And do you still make pastry regularly?

0:04:30 > 0:04:34Not as much as I used to, but with my little daughter, Isabel,

0:04:34 > 0:04:38- I get her involved as well. - Oh, lovely. Licks the spoon!

0:04:38 > 0:04:39Tips it all over the floor, normally.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42We spend more time cleaning up than we do actually making stuff.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44But that's what it's all about. And what about a team?

0:04:44 > 0:04:46Obviously, you're great partners,

0:04:46 > 0:04:48but are you going to be great team-mates?

0:04:48 > 0:04:51- Helen, I reckon you're going to be in charge.- Of course!

0:04:51 > 0:04:54- I'll agree with that. - We've both got the same tactic,

0:04:54 > 0:04:58which is to spend little and go for items that might make profit.

0:04:58 > 0:05:02- Ah, right, OK.- However that, coupled with magpie eyes, may go

0:05:02 > 0:05:06- a little bit wrong.- I might have to rein her in a bit, I think.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09I always love the best-laid schemes of Bargain Hunt contestants.

0:05:09 > 0:05:10It never goes away, you think it will.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13But it's not going to go any way at all without money.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16So, I'm going to give you each £300.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19Reds, that's for you and, Blues, I think this goes to Helen,

0:05:19 > 0:05:22that's for you. And I will tell you your experts are waiting for you,

0:05:22 > 0:05:25so go on, find them, because there are plenty of stalls out there, too.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27Well, it's all happy families for now.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30Let's see if it's the same at the end of the show.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32Waiting for the teams are today's experts.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37He's worldly wise - for the Reds, it's Thomas Plant.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42And coming to the rescue for the Blues - it's Kate Bliss.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49- What are we going to look for today? - Something pretty in silver.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52- Something to sell well...- Yeah? - ..or something animal related.- OK.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56- What about you, Amanda? - I like a naked lady.- A naked lady!

0:05:56 > 0:05:58- Oh, definitely shiny.- OK. - I'm a bit of a magpie.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01Silver, gold, something like that. Something that'll make a profit.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05You'd better get looking, teams, your time starts now.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07- ALARM RINGS - Well, let's go.

0:06:07 > 0:06:09- Let's get started!- OK.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15And, straightaway, Jo is sticking to her shopping list

0:06:15 > 0:06:17and has her eye on this silver.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20- I like the card case.- Yes. And there's a clef for your music.

0:06:20 > 0:06:24- Hey!- See?- Not interested. - Not interested?

0:06:24 > 0:06:27Not hitting the right note just yet, Thomas.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30The Blues look determined to find something shiny.

0:06:30 > 0:06:32Shiny, shiny, shiny, shiny.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35And the Reds appear to have moved from silver on to brass.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37I prefer the thing over there.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39- The coal scuttle? - Yes, if that's what it is.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42It is a coal scuttle and do you know what date this would be?

0:06:42 > 0:06:44I guess '20s to '30s, because it looks Deco.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47- You're quite right. Yeah, it is Deco.- It's got nice angles to it.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50I love the little feet. They're lovely bracket-spread feet.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52- They look like sort of... - It's all about the shapes, isn't it?

0:06:52 > 0:06:55- Yeah, talons.- Yes! - Like a dragon's talon, aren't they?

0:06:55 > 0:06:58- It's a good thing. - It doesn't say a price, though.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02- Do one of you want to go and have a chat?- OK. I'll go.- Go on, then.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05- All right.- See what you can do. - Is she quite a good negotiator?

0:07:05 > 0:07:07- No.- No?- No.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09Let's wait and see.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12OK, the best she can really do is 38.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15- Well, no.- Perhaps we should leave it?- We should leave it. OK.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18For £30, I think there's a profit, but 35...

0:07:18 > 0:07:21So, that's an offer of £35 from the stallholder.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24- It's shiny.- Yes, shiny. - But it's not a naked lady.

0:07:24 > 0:07:25- No.- Come on! - THEY LAUGH

0:07:27 > 0:07:29Best move on, then, Reds.

0:07:29 > 0:07:30Now, are the Blues in high spirits?

0:07:32 > 0:07:34So, let's have a little look. Let's get some more light on it.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37- Up you come. What does that say, Helen?- Let's have a look.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40- I'm sure it's silver-plated rather than silver.- EPNS.

0:07:40 > 0:07:44So EPNS stands for electro-plated nickel silver.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47But I quite like the way you've got that ribbed top there

0:07:47 > 0:07:50- to help you undo it.- What would you say that would get in an auction?

0:07:50 > 0:07:53The ticket price is 25. It's not a rare thing.

0:07:53 > 0:07:57- I think we'll leave that one, then, I think.- It could be £5 to £10.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00- Oh, definitely not.- I think we'll leave that.- It's a stylish thing.

0:08:00 > 0:08:02But they're not, yeah, you see them quite a lot.

0:08:02 > 0:08:04- Nice and heavy, but...- Yes.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07No shiny or silver just yet for the Blues.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09Reds, are you putting your best foot forward?

0:08:09 > 0:08:11Do you like these two?

0:08:11 > 0:08:14- Pair of beautifully made shoes. - Hmm...- No? No love there.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16- What about these?- No.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18- No.- Too much money? - Yeah, definitely.

0:08:18 > 0:08:20OK. I can see the...

0:08:20 > 0:08:22I can see the "no" happening immediately from Amanda's lips.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24Yes, I know!

0:08:24 > 0:08:28The Reds seem to know what they like or, should I say, don't like.

0:08:28 > 0:08:30Now, are the Blues on the scent?

0:08:30 > 0:08:34- Ooh!- Oh, that's quite nice. - That's quite nice!- Toiletry bottles.

0:08:34 > 0:08:36- I quite like these. - Glass not plastic, I'm guessing.

0:08:36 > 0:08:37It's glass, yes, have a little feel, Helen.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40Are they their original lids, would you say?

0:08:40 > 0:08:42I would. They're all matching, which is quite nice.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44Would you say that's silver or...?

0:08:44 > 0:08:48No. I think... I can tell by the feel of it, yeah.

0:08:48 > 0:08:49I think it's probably plate.

0:08:49 > 0:08:52Well, they've got their original stoppers inside,

0:08:52 > 0:08:54- which is quite nice.- It's got a cork.- And cork in the top there,

0:08:54 > 0:08:57yeah, to seal it up. I would say they're probably '40s,

0:08:57 > 0:08:59getting on for '50s, looking at the leather case.

0:08:59 > 0:09:01- I like the case. - What's it marked up at?

0:09:01 > 0:09:03- 48 on that.- Ooh!

0:09:03 > 0:09:07- 48 seems quite a lot. - Hmm. I would agree.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10At auction, I would probably put sort of £15 to £20 on it.

0:09:10 > 0:09:12Let's see what's the best they can do.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15Hi there. We're just looking at your nice little set here.

0:09:15 > 0:09:17What could you do for us on that?

0:09:17 > 0:09:19- £40.- £40?

0:09:19 > 0:09:23- Yes.- I think 35's probably the most that I'd go for.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26- Would you say any more?- No, I think that's even maybe a little too high.

0:09:26 > 0:09:30- A little too high, yeah.- I've got shrewd punters, I'm afraid, today.

0:09:30 > 0:09:33- LAUGHTER - Are you sure you can't go to 35?

0:09:33 > 0:09:37- Could you do any better? - You'll have to wait till my husband comes back and ask him.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39NATASHA: So, whilst the Blues wait

0:09:39 > 0:09:41for the best price from the stallholder's husband,

0:09:41 > 0:09:43have the Reds found something else they don't like?

0:09:43 > 0:09:47- Nothing grabbing your attention? - No.- No, OK.

0:09:47 > 0:09:49I got the feeling there was an immediate no from you there.

0:09:49 > 0:09:51- Yeah, no. - HE LAUGHS

0:09:51 > 0:09:53Definitely not that.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56Oh, dear! I think Thomas will be earning his money today.

0:09:58 > 0:10:01Speaking of money, Blues, what's the best price for the scent bottles?

0:10:01 > 0:10:03- He'll take 35? - Yeah, he'll take 35.- Wonderful!

0:10:03 > 0:10:07- What do we think about that? - Yeah. I think 35's worth a go.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09- I think we should go for it, yeah. - Yeah?- Yeah.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12- Is Helen twisting your arm, Mark? - Yeah, she normally does.

0:10:12 > 0:10:14- LAUGHTER - Great. Decision?- Excellent!

0:10:14 > 0:10:17- Yeah, our first item.- Fantastic! - Our first item.- Thank you so much.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20- That's brilliant. - Thank you very much. Thank you.

0:10:20 > 0:10:21Yes, well done, Blues.

0:10:21 > 0:10:25That's £13 off the ticket price and that's item number one

0:10:25 > 0:10:27with just over ten minutes on the clock.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30Now, I think Thomas might be searching for inspiration.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32I'm rubbing him for a bit of wisdom.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34GIGGLING

0:10:34 > 0:10:37Anything is worth a try, Thomas.

0:10:37 > 0:10:40So, Blues, are you still motoring along nicely?

0:10:40 > 0:10:43- This one, yeah.- Do you like that, then?- Yeah, it's the front of a...

0:10:43 > 0:10:45- Is it the front of a scooter? - It's a Vespa.

0:10:45 > 0:10:47- It looks like the front of a Vespa, doesn't it?- Yeah.

0:10:47 > 0:10:49It's different, isn't it?

0:10:49 > 0:10:52- It's very bright.- Very different. What's the price?- £80 on that.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55- I would say...- It's very modern. - It's very modern, Helen.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57- It's got to be for a very particular market as well.- Yeah.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01You'd need somebody that likes Vespas. So, as much as it's lovely,

0:11:01 > 0:11:04- I don't think it's the right thing for an auction.- No, I agree, yeah.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07- She's not just a pretty face!- Oh, she knows what she's talking about.

0:11:07 > 0:11:09- But would you have that in your house?- I would.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12- Well, there's loads in here.- It's not coming home with us today!- No?!

0:11:12 > 0:11:15- Listen to what the boss says!- Yeah, the boss, listen to the boss, yeah.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18Helen is definitely putting her foot down.

0:11:18 > 0:11:20Thomas wants the Reds to put theirs down, too,

0:11:20 > 0:11:22with 20 minutes on the clock.

0:11:22 > 0:11:23Time to start looking and buying.

0:11:25 > 0:11:27I do feel we need to have something in the bag.

0:11:27 > 0:11:28- Yes, so do I.- Yeah, we do.

0:11:28 > 0:11:30Well, at least they're in agreement.

0:11:30 > 0:11:32- Nothing really exciting.- No.

0:11:32 > 0:11:36- No.- No.- You don't like it? No? No, not at all?- Not at all.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39With both our teams seeming to be hard to please,

0:11:39 > 0:11:41now might be the time to leave the Reds and Blues shopping

0:11:41 > 0:11:43whilst I show you some silverware.

0:11:51 > 0:11:53Now, at first glance, you might think,

0:11:53 > 0:11:55"Oh, that's a nice novelty silver model."

0:11:55 > 0:11:58And that's the key part - these are not just models.

0:11:58 > 0:12:03The heads come off. But what for? There's no lining in there.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06It's not a particularly brilliantly-shaped vessel

0:12:06 > 0:12:11and, to add even more mystery... well, the wings are hinged.

0:12:11 > 0:12:14You pull one up and it sits up,

0:12:14 > 0:12:17but you pull the other one up and it sort of knocks it over.

0:12:17 > 0:12:21So, they're not really effective as hinged wings, are they?

0:12:21 > 0:12:23So there has to be a good reason.

0:12:23 > 0:12:28And when I did my research, I was loving the reason.

0:12:28 > 0:12:32These silver pheasants, in the 19th century,

0:12:32 > 0:12:36were imported from the Continent and such was their popularity

0:12:36 > 0:12:41that Her Majesty's Excise and Customs decided to impose

0:12:41 > 0:12:43a heavy tax on these items.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46If you wanted to enjoy imported, novelty silver pheasants,

0:12:46 > 0:12:48you were going to have to pay for it

0:12:48 > 0:12:52and, not just you as the end user, but the retailers, too.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55And the makers were charged with coming up with a way

0:12:55 > 0:12:59of taking them out of the bracket of model.

0:12:59 > 0:13:00This is the genius part.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03The head coming off means it's now a vessel -

0:13:03 > 0:13:07a scent bottle, a pepper pot, a salt.

0:13:07 > 0:13:12And another category into which it can now fall is that of a toy,

0:13:12 > 0:13:16because those hinged wings mean that people want to play with them

0:13:16 > 0:13:21and, on tableware and toys, there was no such tax imposed.

0:13:21 > 0:13:26It's a great tale of 19th and early 20th-century tax avoidance.

0:13:26 > 0:13:30So, these are over 100 years old and, unfortunately, in that time,

0:13:30 > 0:13:33there's been a little breakage - as you can see on this one,

0:13:33 > 0:13:37the tail is a little bit shorter than its partner.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40And it's important that we reference the partner,

0:13:40 > 0:13:42because what do we know here on Bargain Hunt?

0:13:42 > 0:13:44Things are often better in a pair.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47So now, it comes down to what they're worth.

0:13:47 > 0:13:51Now, we know they're made of precious metal, hallmarked silver.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55Currently, they're worth about £100, given their weight.

0:13:55 > 0:13:58But put these into a specialist silver auction,

0:13:58 > 0:14:03against an estimate of £200-£300, I reckon they could fly past that.

0:14:03 > 0:14:07It just goes to show, it's not just the material that makes the money,

0:14:07 > 0:14:10it's the story behind it too.

0:14:16 > 0:14:18Back to it.

0:14:18 > 0:14:20We're halfway through the shopping and it's 1-0 to the Blues.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23Reds, any closer to liking anything?

0:14:23 > 0:14:26- Couldn't do it for 80?- You see, I'm not sure I'd want it for 80.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29- No?- That's my problem.- Wouldn't even want it for 80. There you are.

0:14:29 > 0:14:31- It's a nice thing. Thank you. - We're going to run out of time.

0:14:31 > 0:14:32Thank you.

0:14:32 > 0:14:35I'm sensing tension in the Red camp.

0:14:35 > 0:14:37Amanda, you need to start buying.

0:14:37 > 0:14:39Blues, how's your quest for shiny items going?

0:14:40 > 0:14:43- Have you looked in this cabinet? - No, let's have a little look round.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46- There's some shiny bits in there. - Ooh! Shiny, shiny, shiny! Shiny!

0:14:47 > 0:14:50So, with the Reds yet to purchase a thing,

0:14:50 > 0:14:51I think we should check in with Thomas.

0:14:51 > 0:14:55This is a tough one. Amanda's putting the stop on most things.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58Mum's getting really stressed.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01The time is ticking. What are we going to do?

0:15:01 > 0:15:04Start buying, Thomas! What about the Blues, Kate?

0:15:04 > 0:15:07Well, what a fantastic start. We pounced on that first item.

0:15:07 > 0:15:09It's a lovely thing.

0:15:09 > 0:15:11We bought it, couldn't have been better.

0:15:11 > 0:15:15But now, we have looked at quite a few objects, a lot of shiny objects.

0:15:15 > 0:15:19We could really do with getting some more purchases under our belts.

0:15:19 > 0:15:21That goes for both teams, Kate.

0:15:21 > 0:15:25Thomas, is it time to have a stern word with the Reds?

0:15:25 > 0:15:27I have to say, there's been a lot of nos.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30- LAUGHTER - Hmm.- Yeah!- Yeah, "Hmm! Hmm!"

0:15:30 > 0:15:33- This is the pensive look. - Lovely stuff, wrong price.- Yeah.

0:15:33 > 0:15:35- This is Bargain Hunt. - She does have a point.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38Back to the Blues and it looks like they've found another shiny item.

0:15:38 > 0:15:41- It's very pretty.- Is that the kind of thing you had in mind?

0:15:41 > 0:15:43- Yeah, it's shiny.- I like that a lot.

0:15:43 > 0:15:45- It IS shiny. - We're actually agreeing as well,

0:15:45 > 0:15:48- which is good.- Yeah. How much? - How much?- That's the question.

0:15:48 > 0:15:52- So we've got 48 on there. - 48.- We'll leave that one.

0:15:52 > 0:15:56- Really?- Yeah. So, I think we'll have a bit of a rush and a dash around

0:15:56 > 0:16:00and hopefully pick something a little bit cheaper.

0:16:00 > 0:16:02- I agree, back it goes. - Got your running shoes on, then?

0:16:02 > 0:16:04THEY LAUGH

0:16:04 > 0:16:07Well, the price has taken the shine off that, then.

0:16:07 > 0:16:10Reds, could this be the statue you were after?

0:16:10 > 0:16:12We like this here. We don't think it's got much age to it.

0:16:12 > 0:16:14What is it? Oh, right, OK.

0:16:14 > 0:16:16So it's bronzed.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19It's a original design for Frith Sculptures, made in England.

0:16:19 > 0:16:23We've got it all there. It's £90. What do you like about it, Amanda?

0:16:23 > 0:16:26- What do you like, Mum? She liked it, too.- I like the lines of it.

0:16:26 > 0:16:27- Yes.- I think it's... Yeah.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30It's not that old. It's a modern sculpture.

0:16:30 > 0:16:34Sometimes these are desirable. What's the best on it?

0:16:34 > 0:16:36- 40?- 40. Can you do any better than that?

0:16:36 > 0:16:39I know that's really cheeky and you've come down halfway already.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42- You've come down loads already and that's so kind of you.- 25?- Yeah.

0:16:42 > 0:16:44- Let's take it. - Do you want to buy it?

0:16:44 > 0:16:47- Yes.- £25, that is very kind of you to go down that far.

0:16:47 > 0:16:49- Yeah?- We've got our first item. - First item!

0:16:49 > 0:16:52- That's a good thing. - Yes! Whoo!- Brilliant!

0:16:52 > 0:16:56At last! In 35 minutes, the Reds are finally off the mark,

0:16:56 > 0:16:58but now, the Blues appear to have stalled.

0:16:58 > 0:17:01- Nice, but it's not my cup of tea. - Not blingy enough for you?

0:17:01 > 0:17:04It's not blingy. It's not my idea of bling anyway.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06- No!- OK.

0:17:06 > 0:17:09No is definitely the word of the day.

0:17:09 > 0:17:12Saying that, the Reds seem to like this silk scarf.

0:17:12 > 0:17:16- It's gorgeous.- So, this here is a lovely silk scarf, isn't it?

0:17:16 > 0:17:20And the colours, the white, the mauve and the green,

0:17:20 > 0:17:22- the violets as well.- Yeah. - What do they represent?

0:17:22 > 0:17:25- The Suffragettes.- Exactly. - Oh, it IS the Suffragettes.

0:17:25 > 0:17:27White for purity, green for hope and mauve for dignity.

0:17:27 > 0:17:29And those were the colours they used.

0:17:29 > 0:17:31It was like a code. And I think this is,

0:17:31 > 0:17:33because it is quite fine silk, isn't it...

0:17:33 > 0:17:36- It's very fine. - ..and as a piece of, you know,

0:17:36 > 0:17:38- vintage textile... - As you say, history.

0:17:38 > 0:17:41..and social history, I think it's rather fun.

0:17:41 > 0:17:44I think it's... I think the latticework here is lovely.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47- It is.- But on one of the ends, the latticework's a bit of a mess.

0:17:47 > 0:17:50- Well, when it's old, yes. - I think YOU'D be a mess!- Yes!

0:17:50 > 0:17:53- SHE LAUGHS:- If I was that old? - You'd be a mess if you were old!

0:17:53 > 0:17:57- Wouldn't you...- Oh, yes. - ..if you were 1910, 1915?

0:17:57 > 0:18:00And it's £15. I think you could probably do quite well with that.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03- You could probably get that...- Get it a bit down, cos of the damage.

0:18:03 > 0:18:07Oh, yeah, easily, because of the damage, but it's a well-made object.

0:18:07 > 0:18:11- Do you like it?- I think it's lovely. - I'll go and speak to the dealer.

0:18:11 > 0:18:13- Oh, can I do that. - Do you want to do it?- Yeah!

0:18:13 > 0:18:15- I haven't spoken to a dealer yet. - Go on, off you go.

0:18:15 > 0:18:17How do you think she's going to get on?

0:18:17 > 0:18:20- She'll do it!- I think she's going to be really, really good.

0:18:20 > 0:18:22- She will be. - She's a strong woman!- She will!

0:18:22 > 0:18:25Mum has faith in Amanda. Let's see...

0:18:25 > 0:18:27OK, well, she wanted 15. She did go down to 12,

0:18:27 > 0:18:30said she wouldn't go any further, but I did squeeze her to 10.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33- Good.- Oh, well done. - Get it?- 10 will be fine.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35- Super. I'll go and tell her. - All right, go on. Thank you.

0:18:35 > 0:18:38- Brilliant!- Brilliant! Yes! - Second item down.- At last!

0:18:38 > 0:18:41Do you know, it's just like, you know, you knock over one domino

0:18:41 > 0:18:44- and they just carry on. - And then they all follow!

0:18:44 > 0:18:46So one more to go.

0:18:46 > 0:18:49Yes, one to go. Let's hope this momentum continues.

0:18:49 > 0:18:51Now, Blues, you're trailing

0:18:51 > 0:18:53and there's 15 minutes left on the clock.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56- Now, this. - Oh, I like it, you know, guys.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59- What did you like about it? - Just the shape.- Pieces like this

0:18:59 > 0:19:02are known as "bentwood pieces", for obvious reasons,

0:19:02 > 0:19:06because the wood has been heated, actually, and then bent

0:19:06 > 0:19:09to get this lovely scroll, probably for hats at the top...

0:19:09 > 0:19:11- Yeah.- ..and then coats at the bottom, I would say.- Ah!

0:19:11 > 0:19:15- '30s, certainly early 20th century, rather than Victorian.- Hmm!

0:19:15 > 0:19:17- We've got 68 on there.- 68.

0:19:17 > 0:19:20What would be the price that you would like to pay?

0:19:20 > 0:19:24- About 35, 40 max.- Yeah.- I was going to say half of the ticket price.

0:19:24 > 0:19:27- Half the ticket price?- Yeah. - You drive a hard bargain, you two!

0:19:27 > 0:19:29- I do! I want to make a profit! - You have to!

0:19:29 > 0:19:32- You're in it to win it! - Absolutely!- Let's face it!

0:19:32 > 0:19:35Why don't we go and see what the gentleman's best offer is?

0:19:35 > 0:19:38- Excellent! There's the gentleman. Hi there. Best offer?- Best offer?

0:19:38 > 0:19:41- We're running out of time as well. - MAN: Price-wise, £50.

0:19:41 > 0:19:46What about making it a nice round number, taking it down to 48?

0:19:46 > 0:19:51- 55?- No, 48. £20 off.- I'll do 48. - Yeah? You've got a deal, then.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54- OK.- Fantastic.- Thank you very much. - Thank you very much.- Cheers.

0:19:54 > 0:19:57- Thanks very much.- Brilliant, well done, guys, second buy.- I know!

0:19:57 > 0:20:00- Fantastic. Let's leave it there and crack on.- Thank you.- Thank you.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03Yes, crack on. There's less than ten minutes left, teams,

0:20:03 > 0:20:05and you both need one more item.

0:20:05 > 0:20:07Thomas, what have you spotted?

0:20:08 > 0:20:10Do you like exotic items?

0:20:10 > 0:20:14Look at that. Silver lined, silver-gilt lined,

0:20:14 > 0:20:16for your herbs and spices for travel.

0:20:16 > 0:20:19- Oh, that's pretty. - Yes, that is nice.

0:20:19 > 0:20:24- Indian.- Hmm.- dating from the late 19th century.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26We have got lots of money left.

0:20:26 > 0:20:29- I know we do.- Yeah. This is a big ticket item.

0:20:30 > 0:20:32260 quid.

0:20:32 > 0:20:34- Yeah, we can't afford that.- You can.

0:20:34 > 0:20:36We've got £265 left.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38Just putting it out there, you haven't got much time.

0:20:38 > 0:20:42Minutes. If we go no for this, we're going for that coal scuttle.

0:20:42 > 0:20:44- Yes.- All right? What are you going to do?

0:20:44 > 0:20:46- It's up to you.- Coal scuttle.

0:20:46 > 0:20:50- Coal scuttle it is.- Because that'll make the bigger profit, yes.- OK.

0:20:50 > 0:20:54Well, with time against them, the Reds have had to make a decision.

0:20:54 > 0:20:57But it also looks like Kate has found some silver.

0:20:57 > 0:20:59But will the Blues like the price?

0:20:59 > 0:21:02We've got a pair of pepperettes here, which I think are quite nice,

0:21:02 > 0:21:06cos they're egg shaped, which is a little bit more unusual.

0:21:06 > 0:21:08- There they are.- Silver?

0:21:08 > 0:21:09- They are silver.- I like that!

0:21:09 > 0:21:13They're hallmarked on the side here, both quite clearly.

0:21:13 > 0:21:18- Inside, they have a little base in there...- Right.

0:21:18 > 0:21:20- ..which has a bit of a weight in it...- OK.

0:21:20 > 0:21:24..so that they stand quite nicely on the table.

0:21:24 > 0:21:27- If you can imagine, without that, they'd be quite flimsy.- Yeah.

0:21:27 > 0:21:32- I like them.- Yeah.- How much are they?- The price on there is 85.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34Let's find our stallholder.

0:21:34 > 0:21:38Excuse me, sir. Hi there, we're just interested in something over here.

0:21:38 > 0:21:40- Right, OK. - We quite like your pepperettes.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43- Yeah, yeah.- They're priced at 85 on your ticket.- Yeah, yeah.

0:21:43 > 0:21:47- What could you do for us?- I could do 55, but that would have to be it.

0:21:47 > 0:21:51- I think we're done.- Yeah.- 55? - I think you've got a deal.

0:21:51 > 0:21:55- 55?- Thank you very much.- Well, thank you very much indeed, sir.

0:21:55 > 0:21:57- That's great.- Pleasure.- Lovely.

0:21:57 > 0:22:00Well done, Blues. Job done with minutes remaining.

0:22:00 > 0:22:05Now, Reds, I hope the coal scuttle, which you haggled down to £35,

0:22:05 > 0:22:07hasn't gone up in smoke.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10- That's it, it's still here.- Phew! - Are we going to go for it?

0:22:10 > 0:22:11- You've made the decision.- Yes.

0:22:11 > 0:22:15- Go and speak to them. - Yes.- Go on, off you go.

0:22:15 > 0:22:18Oh, I am exhausted!

0:22:18 > 0:22:20The shy stallholder agreed on the price.

0:22:20 > 0:22:21Job done, Reds.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24You know what that means? Time's up.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27- Done!- Sorted!- Come here, you two!

0:22:27 > 0:22:29- SHE LAUGHS:- Sorry.

0:22:29 > 0:22:32So let's remind ourselves what the Red team bought.

0:22:32 > 0:22:38First up, Amanda wanted a statue and she bought this one for £25.

0:22:38 > 0:22:41Next, have they got it wrapped up with the silk scarf?

0:22:41 > 0:22:42Bought for £10.

0:22:44 > 0:22:47And finally, will this coal scuttle be filled with profit?

0:22:47 > 0:22:48£35 paid.

0:22:49 > 0:22:52Well, Amanda, you said you were going to buy a naked lady.

0:22:52 > 0:22:54You didn't mention a naked man, but we've got one of each.

0:22:54 > 0:22:57- I know!- How good is that? - In the same item.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00- OK, so which is your favourite item, Jo?- Mine would be the scarf.

0:23:00 > 0:23:03And which do you think is going to bring the biggest profit?

0:23:03 > 0:23:05Actually, it could be the scarf.

0:23:05 > 0:23:07- You reckon?- Yes. - OK, we'll see about that.

0:23:07 > 0:23:09Amanda, what do you feel about your favourite one?

0:23:09 > 0:23:11I think it might be the coal scuttle,

0:23:11 > 0:23:14- just because of the shape of it. - What about biggest profit?

0:23:14 > 0:23:16I think the naked couple, yeah.

0:23:16 > 0:23:18- Of course, we had to mention them again, didn't we?- Of course!

0:23:18 > 0:23:21Now, Thomas, was that stressful, because they weren't

0:23:21 > 0:23:23- quick off the mark? - Oh, my gosh, you two! Oh, my gosh!

0:23:23 > 0:23:25I don't know how you did it.

0:23:25 > 0:23:28You squeezed it all in and half an hour.

0:23:28 > 0:23:33We got there, we did. So, only £70 spent, last of the big spenders!

0:23:33 > 0:23:37- So £230 you have in your pocket? - I do.- Thank you, Jo.

0:23:37 > 0:23:40Now, is that the largest amount I've ever handed over to you, Thomas?

0:23:40 > 0:23:42- Yeah, I think it is.- OK.

0:23:42 > 0:23:47- Any ideas?- Maybe. I'm going to be a bit coy about it.

0:23:47 > 0:23:49Not like you, Thomas.

0:23:49 > 0:23:52Thomas is playing his cards close to his chest, so, in the meantime,

0:23:52 > 0:23:55we'll go and see what the Blues bought.

0:23:55 > 0:23:57First up, will the Blues have a whiff of profit

0:23:57 > 0:24:01with these scent bottles? Bought for £35.

0:24:02 > 0:24:06Next, they were hung up on this hat and coat stand. £48 paid.

0:24:08 > 0:24:10And finally, they wanted silver

0:24:10 > 0:24:13and bought these salt and pepper pots for £55.

0:24:13 > 0:24:16Now, of the three items that you bought, Helen,

0:24:16 > 0:24:18- which would you say is your favourite?- I think the last item.

0:24:18 > 0:24:21It was a bit of a rush, and that's the pepperettes.

0:24:21 > 0:24:24- Oh, those wee pepperettes, they're lovely. Silver as well?- Yeah!

0:24:24 > 0:24:27- Silver and shiny.- You reckon they'll bring the most profit?- Definitely.

0:24:27 > 0:24:28- You do?- Definitely.

0:24:28 > 0:24:31We'll hold you to that. Mark, do you agree?

0:24:31 > 0:24:34- Favourite item? - I liked the coat and hat stand.

0:24:34 > 0:24:36Lovely, OK, and, when it comes to profit,

0:24:36 > 0:24:39- which do you think will make the most?- I have to agree with Helen.

0:24:39 > 0:24:41- I think the pepperettes.- Lovely.

0:24:41 > 0:24:44And Kate's got more to do, because you owe me some money.

0:24:44 > 0:24:47- Oh, I do!- You only spent 138.- Yeah.

0:24:47 > 0:24:51So 162. It doesn't stay with me for long, it goes straight over to Kate.

0:24:51 > 0:24:53- Lovely, thank you. - That's quite a lot of money.

0:24:53 > 0:24:56Did you see anything with a high ticket price that caught your eye?

0:24:56 > 0:24:59I saw lots, but whether they will make a profit or not

0:24:59 > 0:25:01- is another thing.- Hmm! - I've got some homework to do.

0:25:01 > 0:25:03We need something with a big profit.

0:25:03 > 0:25:08Profit or not, that is the question, and let's head now to South Wales.

0:25:08 > 0:25:10We're off to Cardiff for the auction.

0:25:18 > 0:25:21Bore da! And good day from Cardiff.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24Thank you for joining us, Ben Rogers Jones,

0:25:24 > 0:25:27because we're here at Rogers Jones Auction House.

0:25:27 > 0:25:29It's all very exciting. Lovely stuff in front of us.

0:25:29 > 0:25:33- We have, mostly.- We have! Let's start off with the Red mixture.

0:25:33 > 0:25:36This is daughter and mum, Amanda and Jo.

0:25:36 > 0:25:38What do you think of our couple?

0:25:38 > 0:25:40- Horrendous.- Really?

0:25:40 > 0:25:44- Honestly.- Amanda was hell-bent on finding a naked lady and,

0:25:44 > 0:25:46not only did she find a naked lady,

0:25:46 > 0:25:48she got a naked man in there to boot.

0:25:48 > 0:25:52I think, in their desperation to find some nudity,

0:25:52 > 0:25:55their judgment has been clouded somewhat.

0:25:55 > 0:25:58It's just not going to be to everyone's taste, but there are

0:25:58 > 0:26:03romantic buyers out there who can possibly relate to such a tryst?

0:26:03 > 0:26:06I've got to be harsh. It's a £15 to £25 lot, at the most.

0:26:06 > 0:26:10Well, you'll be delighted to hear that Amanda only paid £25 for it,

0:26:10 > 0:26:12but I'll tell you what, I have to say,

0:26:12 > 0:26:14although I don't love the style of this ornament,

0:26:14 > 0:26:16I love the style of the silk scarf.

0:26:16 > 0:26:18I think it's a really evocative little piece.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20- What do you think of it? - I think it's lovely.

0:26:20 > 0:26:23It would be really nice to have found some provenance relating it

0:26:23 > 0:26:27to the Suffragette Movement, because the Suffragette colours are there.

0:26:27 > 0:26:29I think it might do rather well.

0:26:29 > 0:26:31Oh, good, so you reckon you've got buyers for it.

0:26:31 > 0:26:35- And what's your estimate for them? - My estimate is on at £30 to £40.

0:26:35 > 0:26:38Aw, well, do you know, they only paid £10 for it?

0:26:38 > 0:26:41- Can you believe that? - I think they will sail it.

0:26:41 > 0:26:44I think you're spot on, it's going to make at least three times that.

0:26:44 > 0:26:48Then we move on to my right to the coal scuttle, or purdonium,

0:26:48 > 0:26:53if we're being particularly fancy, which by the by, Amanda and Jo love.

0:26:53 > 0:26:55- Do you?- I mean, it's OK.

0:26:55 > 0:26:59It's got that of Art Deco look about it, but the cleaning factor

0:26:59 > 0:27:04always keeps brassware at a fairly modest price these days.

0:27:04 > 0:27:08- OK, what kind of estimate? - £25 to £35 for that one, Natasha.

0:27:08 > 0:27:09Well, they were running out of time.

0:27:09 > 0:27:14They paid £35, so perhaps, in that case,

0:27:14 > 0:27:16these Reds are going to need their bonus buy.

0:27:16 > 0:27:17Let's see what Thomas came up with.

0:27:19 > 0:27:21When we first met you, ladies, you had a touch of blue

0:27:21 > 0:27:24in your hair, Amanda. It was all very fair and diplomatic.

0:27:24 > 0:27:26It's gone and you're down to business, red all the way?

0:27:26 > 0:27:29That's it. Be fair when we're buying, but when we're selling,

0:27:29 > 0:27:31- we want to win. - I like this ruthless approach,

0:27:31 > 0:27:34but will you win with what Thomas has purchased for you?

0:27:34 > 0:27:38You left him £230 and he's sort of almost fashioned a sarong

0:27:38 > 0:27:41- out of this cloth...- Yeah! - ..so what's going on, Thomas?

0:27:41 > 0:27:44You know I'm a dedicated follower of fashion,

0:27:44 > 0:27:47so I had to find something rather fashionable and I did.

0:27:47 > 0:27:48Look at these!

0:27:48 > 0:27:50LAUGHTER

0:27:50 > 0:27:55- Now, look, these are... - Wow!- They're huge.

0:27:55 > 0:27:58- They are huge.- Yeah! - These are Breton...

0:27:58 > 0:28:031890s sycamore and leather clogs, for maybe a fisherman.

0:28:03 > 0:28:07They are brilliant. They are folk art at its rawest.

0:28:07 > 0:28:10- Are they comfortable?- They are gorgeous, yeah, they're really nice.

0:28:10 > 0:28:13- They're not as heavy as you think. - They're not.- They're sycamore

0:28:13 > 0:28:16and sycamore's quite a light wood. It's a beautiful piece of tree.

0:28:16 > 0:28:19Let's get down to business. Jo, ask an important question.

0:28:19 > 0:28:22OK, how much do you think they'll make?

0:28:22 > 0:28:25- First of all, you want to know how much I spent on them?- OK.

0:28:25 > 0:28:29They were £70. They were about as much as you spent!

0:28:29 > 0:28:30LAUGHTER

0:28:30 > 0:28:32That surprises me!

0:28:32 > 0:28:34- It was so perfect. - Did you expect them to be?

0:28:34 > 0:28:38- I expected them to be more. - Oh, I expected them to be less.

0:28:38 > 0:28:41- Did you?- I knew Amanda would. - AMANDA AND JO LAUGH

0:28:41 > 0:28:43How much do you reckon they'll make?

0:28:43 > 0:28:46I have no idea, I've never sold a pair. They are a risk.

0:28:46 > 0:28:49They are interesting - that's why I had to buy them.

0:28:49 > 0:28:50Now is not the time to decide.

0:28:50 > 0:28:53We'll wait until the auction to do that and, in the meantime, we'll see

0:28:53 > 0:28:57what the auctioneer thinks of Thomas's ever-so-fashionable clogs!

0:28:58 > 0:29:01Well, I hope these are your size, Ben.

0:29:01 > 0:29:03Thomas has gone for these clogs.

0:29:03 > 0:29:07- Nice to have a pair, I suppose. - So what's your estimate, then?

0:29:07 > 0:29:09My estimate is £15 to £25.

0:29:09 > 0:29:12Really? Really, as low as that?

0:29:12 > 0:29:15I think so. It's difficult to know what to do with them, isn't it?

0:29:15 > 0:29:19Well, it's difficult, then, to fathom why Thomas plant spent

0:29:19 > 0:29:23- £70 on them.- I think he may well have truly put his foot in it.

0:29:25 > 0:29:28I can't top that pun, so let's move on then to the Blues,

0:29:28 > 0:29:32Helen and Mark, who, as a couple, have bought quite traditionally,

0:29:32 > 0:29:35wouldn't you say, by the looks of things? We'll start off with this

0:29:35 > 0:29:38leather case set of scent bottles. Not silver, chrome lidded.

0:29:38 > 0:29:42- Are they floating your boat? - They're OK for a vintage item.

0:29:42 > 0:29:45The problem with them is what you've just mentioned,

0:29:45 > 0:29:48that they're chrome lids instead of silver.

0:29:48 > 0:29:51A fairly modest-valued vintage item, I think.

0:29:51 > 0:29:55They're just modest in their style, even the box is quite sad

0:29:55 > 0:29:58- and there's no enamel...- Yes. - ..or cuts on the glass or anything,

0:29:58 > 0:30:00so is it quite a modest estimate?

0:30:00 > 0:30:04It is a rather underwhelming estimate of £10 to £15.

0:30:04 > 0:30:09Right, OK, they paid £35 for them, so they'll need a bit of luck there.

0:30:09 > 0:30:13Hopefully, they'll find it in this unusual bentwood hat stand.

0:30:13 > 0:30:17It is unusual. We couldn't really work out how it could be used,

0:30:17 > 0:30:20but we can't be too generous with our estimate on it,

0:30:20 > 0:30:25because it is fairly plain in its look. We put £15 to £25.

0:30:25 > 0:30:28Oh, that is quite austere, because they paid 48 for it.

0:30:28 > 0:30:31- Right.- So, let's move on to these pepperettes.

0:30:31 > 0:30:35Now, both Helen and Mark reckon there is profit to be made

0:30:35 > 0:30:38in these pepperettes. Kate led them to them.

0:30:38 > 0:30:42- What do you think?- There's nothing really fancy about them

0:30:42 > 0:30:46or they don't really have a great design quality,

0:30:46 > 0:30:49so it's got to be a modest estimate. £15 to £20.

0:30:49 > 0:30:52That's a shame, isn't it? Because I think I agree with you.

0:30:52 > 0:30:55There's not much there to lead towards a higher estimate,

0:30:55 > 0:30:58- but they did pay £55 for them. - Oh, goodness.

0:30:58 > 0:31:01OK, I think everything points towards the fact that these Blues

0:31:01 > 0:31:05might need their bonus buy, so let's find out what it is.

0:31:06 > 0:31:09You left Kate 162.

0:31:09 > 0:31:12- I'd be nervous. - Mmm, I'm hoping it's shiny.

0:31:12 > 0:31:14- Oh, are you ready?- Yeah!- Yeah.

0:31:14 > 0:31:17- Oh, my gosh, a bear! Wow!- It's wonderful.

0:31:17 > 0:31:22- Shiny fur!- Do you like him? - I love bears!- Oh, good!- I love that.

0:31:22 > 0:31:24That's a good start. It's not shiny, I'm afraid.

0:31:24 > 0:31:27- Well, he's got beady eyes...- Beady eyes!- ..little glass eyes in there,

0:31:27 > 0:31:30but I fell in love with this little chap.

0:31:30 > 0:31:32Have a little cuddle over there.

0:31:32 > 0:31:34- I think I have as well! - I love his little legs.

0:31:34 > 0:31:38Obviously, he's quite small, which puts him in quite a nice bracket

0:31:38 > 0:31:41for collectors - he's little bit more unusual.

0:31:41 > 0:31:44He's what known as plush,

0:31:44 > 0:31:46lovely glass little eyes and a stitched nose,

0:31:46 > 0:31:49as you can see, but the nice thing I like about him is he's got these

0:31:49 > 0:31:53articulated limbs, which move really nicely, so you can sit him down,

0:31:53 > 0:31:57if you want to. I would say he dates from about the 1950s.

0:31:57 > 0:32:00This isn't a Steiff, it's not German.

0:32:00 > 0:32:02I think he's probably British,

0:32:02 > 0:32:04but nevertheless, he's in lovely condition

0:32:04 > 0:32:08and I think the size of him, combined with that, makes him

0:32:08 > 0:32:11- really desirable for collectors. - How much did you pay for him?

0:32:11 > 0:32:13- Straight in there, aren't you, Helen?- Absolutely!

0:32:13 > 0:32:16- All about the money! - I paid £25.

0:32:16 > 0:32:18OK, that's not too bad.

0:32:18 > 0:32:20How much do you think you'll make at auction?

0:32:20 > 0:32:25Do you know, I think he might make between £30 and £50.

0:32:25 > 0:32:28- OK.- Make some money today, then. - THEY LAUGH

0:32:28 > 0:32:29Mark, has this brought out your inner child?

0:32:29 > 0:32:31You seem so taken with this wee teddy?

0:32:31 > 0:32:35I do, I've still got teddy bears from when I was a wee boy!

0:32:35 > 0:32:38- Really?- Yeah.- Remember, don't make your minds up yet.

0:32:38 > 0:32:42I know you love it, but wait and see how your three items get on first.

0:32:42 > 0:32:45In the meantime, let's see what the auctioneer thinks.

0:32:45 > 0:32:47Is he warm and fuzzy about Kate's cuddly toy?

0:32:48 > 0:32:53- OK, so say hello to this plush wee fellow.- He is gorgeous.

0:32:53 > 0:32:55He's got a lovely little sweet look about him, hasn't he?

0:32:55 > 0:32:57He is a wonderful little teddy bear.

0:32:57 > 0:33:02Nice to have his little mouth intact and his wee eyes, too.

0:33:02 > 0:33:03Something awfully attractive about him.

0:33:03 > 0:33:06Have you put an attractive estimate on this bonus buy?

0:33:06 > 0:33:08I've put £25 to £35.

0:33:08 > 0:33:12At £25 paid, Kate has done pretty well there.

0:33:12 > 0:33:14In general, is it going to be a busy auction today?

0:33:14 > 0:33:15- I should think it is.- Fantastic.

0:33:15 > 0:33:17I can't wait to see the crowds

0:33:17 > 0:33:19and I can't wait to see what happens at the auction.

0:33:19 > 0:33:21£10? 30?

0:33:22 > 0:33:23At £50.

0:33:23 > 0:33:2625. Is there 8?

0:33:26 > 0:33:28Well, it's all smiles, but are those nervous smiles?

0:33:28 > 0:33:30Are you excited or nervous?

0:33:30 > 0:33:33- I'm nervous...- No.- ..but you're not.

0:33:33 > 0:33:37No? You're calm, you're nervous, so, together, perfectly balanced.

0:33:37 > 0:33:40Brilliant. OK, well, it's time for the first lot, ladies.

0:33:40 > 0:33:45Brace yourselves, it's a naked couple in some sort of lovely tryst.

0:33:45 > 0:33:46- Here it goes.- £30?

0:33:46 > 0:33:50- Bid me 30.- He's looking for it.

0:33:50 > 0:33:53Give me 30. 20 to start?

0:33:53 > 0:33:55£20? 20 I have online.

0:33:55 > 0:33:56Is there five? At 20.

0:33:56 > 0:33:59Where's five? 25, is there 30?

0:33:59 > 0:34:0125 in the room.

0:34:01 > 0:34:04At 25 in the room. In the room the bid.

0:34:04 > 0:34:06At 25. £25 in the room.

0:34:06 > 0:34:09All done at 25?

0:34:09 > 0:34:11- 30. At £30.- Yes! Profit! - Who said five?

0:34:11 > 0:34:1535. Is there 40? 35. At 35...

0:34:15 > 0:34:20£35 - lady's bid at 35 for the canoodling figures.

0:34:20 > 0:34:22£35.

0:34:22 > 0:34:24- Well done, Amanda. Well done.- £35.

0:34:24 > 0:34:28£35. Ladies, you have just made a tenner, just like that.

0:34:28 > 0:34:32Now, is our silk scarf going to continue in the profit?

0:34:32 > 0:34:34- I think this will do well. - You paid £10 for it.

0:34:34 > 0:34:36- It's got to make money! - Yeah.- Here it comes.

0:34:36 > 0:34:39£60, bid me £60?

0:34:39 > 0:34:41Bid me 60?

0:34:41 > 0:34:4440? Start me at £30.

0:34:44 > 0:34:47- Come on!- It will be £30.- Yes! - Lovely quality at £30. Come on.

0:34:47 > 0:34:51At 30. £30 before you online. OK, it's in the room at £30.

0:34:51 > 0:34:53Is there five? At 30.

0:34:53 > 0:34:5635. 40.

0:34:56 > 0:34:58Lovely item at £40, it's in the room.

0:34:58 > 0:35:00I think there's an online bidder hovering.

0:35:00 > 0:35:02£40. Anybody else in the room?

0:35:02 > 0:35:08- At £40?- Come on, girls!- 45. 50. At 50. Is there five? £50 in the room.

0:35:08 > 0:35:11- At 50 by my side. - Fantastic.- Anybody new?

0:35:11 > 0:35:13- At £50.- Good news! - Last call at 50...

0:35:13 > 0:35:15Hammer's up now at £50...

0:35:16 > 0:35:18- Yey!- Well done.

0:35:18 > 0:35:21£50. That's another £40 to add to the tally,

0:35:21 > 0:35:24which means you are now £50 in front.

0:35:24 > 0:35:27- But we've got our coal bucket here. - Yeah.

0:35:27 > 0:35:31- I'm not convinced about this one. - You paid £35 for it.

0:35:31 > 0:35:34Got plenty in the bank, so don't worry too much if it makes a loss.

0:35:34 > 0:35:36- Here it comes.- £20 to start. £20?

0:35:36 > 0:35:41- £20. Thank you. Is there £5? - Come on!- By my side, the bid.

0:35:41 > 0:35:43Is there £5? At £20.

0:35:43 > 0:35:45£20. At £20, is there £5?

0:35:45 > 0:35:50At 20! Anybody new now? At £20, all done at 20?

0:35:50 > 0:35:53Our one and only bid at £20 and the hammer is up in 20.

0:35:53 > 0:35:55- Shucks!- £20.

0:35:55 > 0:35:57£20. OK, so it's a loss of £15,

0:35:57 > 0:36:01but you already had 50, so you're £35 in front.

0:36:01 > 0:36:04- Get in!- Ladies! Pat yourselves on the back!

0:36:04 > 0:36:07- Thank you, Thomas.- Thank you. - Oh, no, no, no!

0:36:07 > 0:36:10- See...- Thanks.- ..it wasn't really me, it was all you. It was all you

0:36:10 > 0:36:13- with that figure to start with. - All of that considered buying

0:36:13 > 0:36:16has paid off, but now you have something else to consider.

0:36:16 > 0:36:18Are you going to go for the clogs?
