0:06:25 > 0:06:27What is on our Christmas shopping list today?

0:06:27 > 0:06:29Well, I'd like to find something industrial, or the

0:06:33 > 0:06:37Something striking? Perfect for Christmas, maybe?

0:07:11 > 0:07:13- She's quite nice.- Yeah.- What's she made of?

0:07:13 > 0:07:16A white metal. Ooh, it's got £70 on that.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18It's quite heavy, that, for that.

0:07:18 > 0:07:22This would fetch somewhere between £40-£60 at auction.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24- She's quite nice.- Let's just find out.- OK.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26Hi, there. Right, come on, girls, in you go.

0:07:53 > 0:07:54- And I think I'd love that.- I'd like that.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57In that case, at £35, I would shake the lady's hand.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25Now, LMS.

0:08:25 > 0:08:28- Is that a railway? - What do you think about that?

0:08:28 > 0:08:30Well, I think it's a good spot early on.

0:08:30 > 0:08:34And there's the box that's with it - LMS first aid box.

0:08:34 > 0:08:36- I take it that's...- All part of it?

0:08:36 > 0:08:38Well, it's got a price tag on it.

0:08:44 > 0:08:48- Sir?- Hello.- Can you help us with your fire extinguisher

0:08:48 > 0:08:50and your first aid kit?

0:08:56 > 0:08:58Everyone loves a trier, Richard.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01And we were wondering if the first aid kit went with the

0:09:03 > 0:09:05- The first aid kit's 45...- Right.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07..and the fire extinguisher's 110.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09- Oh, is it?- It is, yeah.

0:09:09 > 0:09:10Right.

0:09:10 > 0:09:12Now, LMS. Is that railway?

0:09:15 > 0:09:18- Right, OK. You were right with the railway connection. - OK, right indeed.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20Shall we have a look inside the first aid box?

0:09:20 > 0:09:22Is that something we are able to do?

0:09:22 > 0:09:25I mean, I like the fire extinguisher,

0:09:25 > 0:09:27but at £110, it would be rich, I think.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30Opening up, we've got...

0:09:30 > 0:09:31Oh, my goodness me, look at that.

0:09:31 > 0:09:33That's fantastic, isn't it? Look at that.

0:09:33 > 0:09:34Wow.

0:09:34 > 0:09:36Might struggle to make a profit on it.

0:09:38 > 0:09:40- Good idea.- Perfect idea, yeah. - Thank you very much.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42We may well return.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45If we did return, was 45 your final price?

0:10:25 > 0:10:27Yep. I like the look of it.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30Not so keen about the condition and I've also seen the price on it so...

0:11:51 > 0:11:53How about 12, and we've got a deal?

0:11:53 > 0:11:55I can't really, no.

0:11:55 > 0:11:56- No?- I've got kids to feed, look.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59And Christmas is coming!

0:11:59 > 0:12:01I'll tell you what, as it's Christmas, I'm happy with 15.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04- Are you happy?- Are you happy with 15?- I would be happy with 15.

0:12:04 > 0:12:05- I'm happy. Good. Excellent. - Thank you.

0:12:05 > 0:12:07In that case, thank you very much indeed.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10- Thanks very much. - Cheers, mate, thank you.- Indeed.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12- Happy Christmas. - Merry Christmas!

0:12:12 > 0:12:14Excellent! Right then.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16- We have a purchase. - On to our second, Blues.

0:12:16 > 0:12:17Come on, let's keep going. Well done.

0:12:17 > 0:12:21Good work, Blues. That's one to tick off the Christmas list.

0:12:21 > 0:12:23Deal sealed in ten minutes.

0:12:23 > 0:12:24Well done!

0:12:24 > 0:12:28Meanwhile, the Reds are still on the lookout for their second item.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32Glasses are pretty, those glasses.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34They are very Christmassy looking.

0:12:34 > 0:12:36They are Italian, they are in a nice box,

0:12:36 > 0:12:38but, I mean, what are they going to cost?

0:12:38 > 0:12:41I wouldn't want to pay more than between £5 and £10 for those.

0:12:41 > 0:12:46You know, in an auction they could make 15, 25, £30.

0:12:46 > 0:12:49We want something... Bit more than that, yeah. I like them.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51OK, well, we will remember those.

0:12:51 > 0:12:52We'll try and remember where they are.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55Something for a cheeky little Christmas tipple, maybe.

0:12:55 > 0:12:57One for the back burner, anyway.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00What have the three wise men spotted?

0:13:00 > 0:13:02What would you use it for now, though, Richard?

0:13:02 > 0:13:04You could use it for a coffee table.

0:13:04 > 0:13:06Store the magazines away.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09- Store magazines, blankets. - Hide Christmas presents.

0:13:10 > 0:13:12Exactly right.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14Always thinking, Blues.

0:13:14 > 0:13:18I like it. By Jove, girls, is that Mother Christmas?

0:13:18 > 0:13:21- Christmas lady, let's have a look at that.- I like her.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24Oh, yes, definitely. And she's dressed in a lovely colour, red.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26- Yes.- Absolutely.- OK.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28Going to have to pick her up and have a look.

0:13:28 > 0:13:30Oh, it's a Leonardo collection.

0:13:30 > 0:13:34Yeah, this is a collection that's not that popular.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37I'll be honest, girls. It's a nice figurine, nice, Christmassy,

0:13:37 > 0:13:39but to be honest, there's not a huge collectors' market.

0:13:39 > 0:13:41These were pretty cheap when they were made

0:13:41 > 0:13:43so we're going to have to put that back.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45A pair of Staffordshire dogs.

0:13:45 > 0:13:48Do you know what these would fetch if these were in good condition?

0:13:48 > 0:13:50- No.- No.- Sticks!

0:13:50 > 0:13:51DRUMBEAT AND CYMBAL

0:13:53 > 0:13:56Raj Bisram, ladies and gentlemen.

0:13:56 > 0:13:57He's here all week.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59What's taken your fancy there, Richard?

0:13:59 > 0:14:01This is catching my eye.

0:14:01 > 0:14:06- What is it?- Well, it's a cylindrical pin box or dressing table box

0:14:06 > 0:14:08- made in Birmingham. - Birmingham stamp.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11Very good. Gosh, you can recognise your hallmarks already.

0:14:11 > 0:14:12It's written, Birmingham.

0:14:13 > 0:14:17- That old trick.- But I think you should check anyway.

0:14:17 > 0:14:20- 1898.- God, you can even work out the dates as well.

0:14:20 > 0:14:21You guys, you're dangerous.

0:14:21 > 0:14:24No flies on these boys, Richard.

0:14:24 > 0:14:29The price on it is shown currently at £68,

0:14:29 > 0:14:31so I'm going to put that one on my list.

0:14:31 > 0:14:35I can also see something also catching my eye which is over here.

0:14:35 > 0:14:39- OK.- Similar. For which I get out my eye piece.

0:14:39 > 0:14:43I'm going to have to have a look at this, because this is not English.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46This is possibly Indian.

0:14:46 > 0:14:47Now, Indian silver is something

0:14:47 > 0:14:51that has become quite collectable over the last few years.

0:14:51 > 0:14:54- The price on this is £75.- OK.

0:14:54 > 0:14:56I think the price is right up there.

0:14:56 > 0:15:00The cylindrical box would probably be a better, safer bet.

0:15:00 > 0:15:02You haven't got to buy either of them.

0:15:02 > 0:15:04Shall we get our feet damp and just see?

0:15:04 > 0:15:05- Let's do it. - Let's ask some questions.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07Now, as it's Christmas,

0:15:07 > 0:15:10we are thinking about buying a piece of silver for the auction.

0:15:10 > 0:15:12And I've picked up these two pieces.

0:15:12 > 0:15:14The cylindrical box.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17And the best price you might be able to do on that one?

0:15:17 > 0:15:19- Would be 60. - Now, the beaker, obviously,

0:15:19 > 0:15:21is a little bit of a punt on my behalf,

0:15:21 > 0:15:25and I'm not getting strong buying signals from my team members here.

0:15:25 > 0:15:29So I'd be going out... I was guessing it was Indian.

0:15:29 > 0:15:31STALL HOLDER: I think it's Indian. And I'd probably

0:15:31 > 0:15:34- nibble that down to 60 as well for you.- That would be a gamble.

0:15:34 > 0:15:36- Let's go for the gamble.- I want to gamble.- Do you want to gamble?

0:15:36 > 0:15:39- Yeah.- I think it's worth a gamble.

0:15:39 > 0:15:40I love it. Excellent.

0:15:40 > 0:15:42We're going to go for your beaker.

0:15:42 > 0:15:43Thank you very much indeed.

0:15:43 > 0:15:46- My kind of buyers. - Consider it sold. Gamblers.

0:15:46 > 0:15:48- Thank you very much.- Yes, indeed!

0:15:48 > 0:15:50Well, these chaps are easily persuaded.

0:15:50 > 0:15:52No pressure, Richard.

0:15:52 > 0:15:54That's two for the Blues, and the Reds are playing catch up,

0:15:54 > 0:15:56with just one buy.

0:15:56 > 0:15:59Coming up to halfway through your Christmas shop, teams.

0:15:59 > 0:16:00Get your skates on!

0:16:00 > 0:16:03- Oh, look!- Sledges, sledges.

0:16:03 > 0:16:06We might have a hard winter this year, girls.

0:16:06 > 0:16:08- I like a sledge.- My goodness, you like a sledge.

0:16:08 > 0:16:12- I do.- I wonder if they've got one they can do for a tenner.

0:16:12 > 0:16:15- Let's find out.- Let's find out. Yeah, if we could get one of these

0:16:15 > 0:16:18for a tenner that would be great, wouldn't it?

0:16:18 > 0:16:20I like that one.

0:16:20 > 0:16:23- Yeah, I quite like that one. - Can you do it for us

0:16:23 > 0:16:24for a Christmas treat for £10?

0:16:24 > 0:16:27STALL HOLDER: Normally 17.50.

0:16:27 > 0:16:31- OK.- 17.50 £10 for Christmas?

0:16:31 > 0:16:33- I'll do it.- Yeah?- Oh, can you? - OK, girls.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36What you should say to these gentlemen

0:16:36 > 0:16:38is a big, big thank you in Dutch.

0:16:38 > 0:16:40OK. So what you say is danke je wel.

0:16:40 > 0:16:42- Danke je wel!- Danke je wel!

0:16:42 > 0:16:43Danke je wel!

0:16:43 > 0:16:46Fluent in Dutch, Mr Bisram.

0:16:46 > 0:16:48I'm very impressed.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50- Danke je wel!- Danke je wel!

0:16:50 > 0:16:51Lovely. Fantastic.

0:16:51 > 0:16:54And I'm also very impressed with your second purchase, ladies.

0:16:54 > 0:16:57A very apt buy for today's shop.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59- Hooray.- Danke je wel!

0:16:59 > 0:17:00Now we need the snow.

0:17:00 > 0:17:02Now we need some snow. Fantastic.

0:17:02 > 0:17:04And cue the snow.

0:17:06 > 0:17:10- Am I carrying the sledge? - You carry the sledge.

0:17:13 > 0:17:18Like the sledge, let's hope it's not all downhill from here, ladies.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20OK, teams, that's two items apiece.

0:17:20 > 0:17:22Just that final item to find.

0:17:22 > 0:17:26OK, Blues Brothers, what's the plan?

0:17:26 > 0:17:28I don't know where we're going to go on the third one.

0:17:28 > 0:17:30- The third will be big.- We've got something interesting.

0:17:30 > 0:17:32We got something silver.

0:17:32 > 0:17:34- The third one's got to be a bit different.- Yeah.

0:17:34 > 0:17:36- And, ladies?- We did say we were going to

0:17:36 > 0:17:39- get something sparkly and glittery and we haven't yet.- Oh, dear.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42- Well, we'll have to.- Half an hour. - Half an hour, we'll find something

0:17:42 > 0:17:43sparkly, glittery and Christmassy.

0:17:43 > 0:17:45- How about that?- Definitely. - Definitely.

0:17:45 > 0:17:46- Spend some money.- Yeah.

0:17:46 > 0:17:49Well, you sound confident anyway, girls.

0:17:49 > 0:17:51And the boys are sticking to their plan.

0:17:51 > 0:17:54They're looking for something on the large side.

0:17:54 > 0:17:56I think that would look pretty cool in most places,

0:17:56 > 0:17:58- to be honest, wouldn't it? - It would do.

0:17:58 > 0:18:00It would do. Look, it's a Fresnel lamp.

0:18:00 > 0:18:01It is stunning.

0:18:01 > 0:18:03But I'm going to tell you now, time against us,

0:18:03 > 0:18:06I think it would have been a nice one under

0:18:06 > 0:18:08the Christmas tree on Christmas morning,

0:18:08 > 0:18:13- but not even if our budget was tripled.- No.

0:18:13 > 0:18:16And you'd need a rather large Christmas tree for it to fit under.

0:18:16 > 0:18:18Move along, boys.

0:18:18 > 0:18:21Looks like it's a change of scenery for the Reds as they venture inside.

0:18:21 > 0:18:23After you.

0:18:23 > 0:18:25- BOTH:- Thank you.

0:18:25 > 0:18:28Right then, Richard, time for a little regroup.

0:18:28 > 0:18:32Remember, you still have that first aid kit as a backup.

0:18:32 > 0:18:34I think it will have been snapped up but let's have a look, shall we?

0:18:34 > 0:18:37Exactly. So if it is there, we can have a deal.

0:18:37 > 0:18:39If it's not, then plan B,

0:18:39 > 0:18:42we have to try and find something way up the other end of the fair.

0:18:42 > 0:18:45- Are we going?- Quick, let's go. - Come on, let's go then.

0:18:45 > 0:18:47Not exactly large, though, is it?

0:18:47 > 0:18:49You'd better get a move on.

0:18:49 > 0:18:51Girls, we haven't got long left.

0:18:51 > 0:18:53There is some beautiful things on this stand

0:18:53 > 0:18:55and I know that one of you likes Lalique.

0:18:55 > 0:18:56- Lalique, yeah.- I mean, you know,

0:18:56 > 0:18:58that is a modern piece of Lalique but,

0:18:58 > 0:19:00you know, of course, Rene Lalique,

0:19:00 > 0:19:03one of the great designers of glassware.

0:19:03 > 0:19:05But I'm not too keen on the modern.

0:19:05 > 0:19:07- No, I don't like... - This is embossed as well.

0:19:07 > 0:19:11But we've only got 17 minutes left so we need to really get a jiffy on.

0:19:11 > 0:19:13Well, at least you ladies know what you like.

0:19:13 > 0:19:15Oh, Dan's spotted something.

0:19:15 > 0:19:17It's a field radio, isn't it?

0:19:17 > 0:19:21Field telephone. Yeah. Second World War.

0:19:21 > 0:19:23So the price on the telephone is...

0:19:23 > 0:19:24Well, it was 120.

0:19:24 > 0:19:26I'll do it for you for 75.

0:19:26 > 0:19:28I've seen them do well before.

0:19:28 > 0:19:31We've got a gamble to take.

0:19:31 > 0:19:33Is the first aid kit still there?

0:19:33 > 0:19:35The telephone's here. What about this?

0:19:35 > 0:19:38Of the two of you, who's the fastest runner?

0:19:38 > 0:19:44- Samuel, probably.- Samuel, right, you run over...- See if it's still there.

0:19:44 > 0:19:45See if it's still there.

0:19:45 > 0:19:47- If it's still there, you've got to come back here.- OK.

0:19:47 > 0:19:48Off you go.

0:19:48 > 0:19:52Running all the way, Samuel.

0:19:52 > 0:19:53Running! Oh, well.

0:19:53 > 0:19:55What have the Reds found?

0:19:55 > 0:19:58# Five gold rings! #

0:19:58 > 0:20:01Actually, not five, just the one.

0:20:01 > 0:20:02- Oh, that one looks nice. - That ring there.

0:20:02 > 0:20:04- That's quite pretty, isn't it?- The ruby?

0:20:04 > 0:20:07- Yeah. That's the very best, isn't it?- Wow. That's lovely.

0:20:07 > 0:20:08I'll do 180 on it for you.

0:20:08 > 0:20:11- How much would that sell? - I think it's a nice...

0:20:11 > 0:20:14If it's a nice little ruby...

0:20:14 > 0:20:18Rubies, apart from diamonds, are the most expensive thing.

0:20:18 > 0:20:20What's the gold, Raj?

0:20:20 > 0:20:23- What is this gold?- It'll be, I should think it's either

0:20:23 > 0:20:24nine or 18-carat gold.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26OK, stop looking at it on your finger now.

0:20:26 > 0:20:28Start some dealing, girls.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31That's right, Raj, time to get down to business, ladies.

0:20:31 > 0:20:35So, after Sam's leisurely trot,

0:20:35 > 0:20:38he's back at the first aid kit store and, luckily, it's still there.

0:20:38 > 0:20:42Hello there. Hi, I saw you earlier about the first aid kit.

0:20:42 > 0:20:45- Yeah, that's right.- It's marked 45. - Yeah.

0:20:45 > 0:20:47Is there any movement on that at all?

0:20:47 > 0:20:49- Best price would be 35.- 35.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51That would be my best price.

0:20:51 > 0:20:54Let me report back. I'll be back in a few moments.

0:20:54 > 0:20:57Back you go then, Sam.

0:20:57 > 0:21:01Meanwhile, our Red sisters are still at the same stall.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05Sadly, just like Santa, our stall holder is a bit shy.

0:21:05 > 0:21:08- Hello.- No, there is no negotiation on that price.

0:21:08 > 0:21:09How much did you say it was? 150?

0:21:09 > 0:21:12- 180.- Was that 160?

0:21:14 > 0:21:16And now the charm offensive.

0:21:16 > 0:21:17- What's your name?- Vic.

0:21:17 > 0:21:19Hello, Vic, I'm Nicky.

0:21:19 > 0:21:22Here we go. Watch those eyelids flutter.

0:21:22 > 0:21:24OK. Not to make my Christmas?

0:21:24 > 0:21:28I'll tell you what, as I'm Nicky and you're Vic, 170.

0:21:28 > 0:21:30STALL HOLDER: You're getting a bargain at 180.

0:21:30 > 0:21:32'Nice try, Nicky!'

0:21:32 > 0:21:33STALL HOLDER: 175, it's yours.

0:21:33 > 0:21:36What do you think?

0:21:36 > 0:21:38- What do I think?- Shall we go?- We are in too deep, girls.

0:21:38 > 0:21:41- We're in too deep. - We're in too deep now.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43OK, 175, can we shake on that?

0:21:43 > 0:21:45Yep, 175.

0:21:45 > 0:21:49- Fantastic. Thank you very much indeed.- Thank you.- Do well with it.

0:21:49 > 0:21:50The sparkle we wanted.

0:21:50 > 0:21:52Absolutely. And I can tell you're happy with it

0:21:52 > 0:21:54because your eyes are both sparkling.

0:21:54 > 0:21:55So, fantastic.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58Oh, you charmer, Raj.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01Only minutes to spare and that's the Reds sewn up.

0:22:01 > 0:22:03So, Sam, what's the plan?

0:22:03 > 0:22:05Dan, Richard, I've got an answer.

0:22:05 > 0:22:09- It's still there.- Yes... - Best possible price, £35.

0:22:09 > 0:22:12£35.

0:22:12 > 0:22:14- That is a good price. - What are you thinking?

0:22:14 > 0:22:18Well, we thought you would be quite good at negotiating, quite good.

0:22:19 > 0:22:21- We said 40.- We thought 40.

0:22:21 > 0:22:23Did you? I think that is our third item.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26Let's go and have a look, shall we?

0:22:26 > 0:22:30I don't want to rush you, boys, but you only have three minutes left.

0:22:30 > 0:22:33I feel some divine intervention is needed.

0:22:33 > 0:22:35- We've got our three items. - BOTH:- Yay!

0:22:35 > 0:22:37Let's go and have a cup of tea, shall we? Well done.

0:22:37 > 0:22:40Mine will be a white with two sugars, thank you very much.

0:22:40 > 0:22:43Come on then, Blues, let's wrap this one up.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45- It's still here.- It is still here.

0:22:45 > 0:22:50- Well, it was the second item we looked at, 58 minutes ago...- Yes.

0:22:50 > 0:22:51..and it is still here.

0:22:51 > 0:22:53Let's go and do the deal then, Sam.

0:22:53 > 0:22:56- Thank you very much, sir, we'll have that at 35.- 35. No worries.

0:22:56 > 0:22:57Thank you very much indeed,

0:22:57 > 0:22:59- and a merry Christmas to you. - And to you, too.

0:22:59 > 0:23:02Hats off, teams, your time is up.

0:23:02 > 0:23:06- So, what shall we get? A glass of eggnog?- That sounds wonderful.

0:23:06 > 0:23:08Now, let's check out what the Red team have bought.

0:23:10 > 0:23:12The deco lady cost them £35.

0:23:15 > 0:23:18Next up, sliding its way to the auction was the sledge.

0:23:18 > 0:23:20It only cost them a tenner.

0:23:22 > 0:23:27Ring the bells. Their final bit of bling set them back £175.

0:23:28 > 0:23:30Nicky and Sue, good shopping.

0:23:30 > 0:23:32- You did spend quite well, didn't you?- Yes.

0:23:32 > 0:23:33What was your favourite item?

0:23:33 > 0:23:35- It has to be the ring.- The ring.

0:23:35 > 0:23:37I did get some money off. I got it for 175.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39Yes, but they were only asking 180!

0:23:39 > 0:23:41£5!

0:23:41 > 0:23:43Cracking bargaining!

0:23:43 > 0:23:45- And what's going to make the biggest profit?- The Art Deco lady.

0:23:45 > 0:23:48- The Art Deco lady. And what do you think, Sue?- I think the same.

0:23:48 > 0:23:49- I think that one.- So that's the one.

0:23:49 > 0:23:52- Confident, Raj?- I love the sledge.

0:23:52 > 0:23:57Do you? I know why Raj loves the sledge... because it was cheap!

0:23:59 > 0:24:03- Now, you spent £220.- We did. - Which means you have 80 left over,

0:24:03 > 0:24:05which I'm afraid you have to hand over to me.

0:24:05 > 0:24:08- Oh, do I?- I don't hold it for long, because it goes to wonderful Raj,

0:24:08 > 0:24:10who is going to buy something

0:24:10 > 0:24:12particularly Christmassy with it, aren't you?

0:24:12 > 0:24:16Well, I'm going to go and look for a reindeer.

0:24:16 > 0:24:17THEY LAUGH

0:24:17 > 0:24:19- I'm going to try. - To go with our sledge.

0:24:19 > 0:24:21- Wonderful.- Don't wait up for me. - To pull the sledge?

0:24:21 > 0:24:23Well, good luck with that.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25While Raj goes in search of Rudolph,

0:24:25 > 0:24:27we'll check out what the Blue team have bought.

0:24:27 > 0:24:29When roasting your chestnuts on an open fire,

0:24:29 > 0:24:31be sure to have one of these handy.

0:24:31 > 0:24:34The extinguisher cost them £15.

0:24:35 > 0:24:39Like the Christmas turkey, they gobbled up the goblet for £60.

0:24:42 > 0:24:44Finally, their shop was wrapped up

0:24:44 > 0:24:47with the first aid kit costing them £35.

0:24:49 > 0:24:51Dan and Sam, are you expecting something

0:24:51 > 0:24:53to go wrong with your lives?

0:24:53 > 0:24:54It must just be built in, I guess.

0:24:54 > 0:24:57You bought a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit.

0:24:57 > 0:24:59THEY LAUGH

0:24:59 > 0:25:01What is all that about?

0:25:01 > 0:25:03Is that a first?

0:25:03 > 0:25:05I think it IS a first. What's your favourite lot?

0:25:05 > 0:25:07I love the fire extinguisher,

0:25:07 > 0:25:12just for the price paid, and I think it's a stylish item.

0:25:12 > 0:25:13- Are you the same, Dan? - Yeah, definitely.

0:25:13 > 0:25:15Although I do like the first aid kit as well.

0:25:15 > 0:25:17What's going to make the biggest profit?

0:25:17 > 0:25:18- Out with it, man! - The fire extinguisher.

0:25:18 > 0:25:20- The fire extinguisher. - Without a doubt.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22Without a doubt. You only spent £110.

0:25:22 > 0:25:25- Sorry about that.- But that means you've got 190 left over.

0:25:25 > 0:25:29- There you go. All yours. - No, no - all HIS.

0:25:29 > 0:25:31What is he going to do with THAT?

0:25:31 > 0:25:33On my way round, I've seen something

0:25:33 > 0:25:35that I think just captures the moment

0:25:35 > 0:25:37at this special time of year.

0:25:37 > 0:25:38So watch this space,

0:25:38 > 0:25:40or I might go off piste.

0:25:40 > 0:25:42Ooh!

0:25:42 > 0:25:46While Richard goes off piste, we're off to deck the halls.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52Just down the road, at Leeds Castle in Kent,

0:25:52 > 0:25:55I'm here to discover the history of Christmas decorations.

0:25:57 > 0:25:59Fashions have certainly changed over the years.

0:26:00 > 0:26:02It's only since the mid-20th century

0:26:02 > 0:26:06that decorations have actually gone up before Christmas Eve.

0:26:06 > 0:26:10Nowadays, it's not unusual to see a touch of tinsel in October.

0:26:12 > 0:26:15Christmas just wouldn't be the same without a bauble or two,

0:26:15 > 0:26:18but have you ever wondered where these customs originated?

0:26:18 > 0:26:22I've been joined by historian Rupert Matthews to find out more.

0:26:23 > 0:26:27So, in times gone by, how did people used to decorate their houses?

0:26:27 > 0:26:31Well, if we're really going back 1,000, 1,500 years,

0:26:31 > 0:26:35we'd be using evergreen holly, of course,

0:26:35 > 0:26:37something from a long time back.

0:26:37 > 0:26:39If you want to look at mistletoe, for instance,

0:26:39 > 0:26:43- the Pagan Celts viewed this as a big fertility symbol.- Ah!

0:26:43 > 0:26:44Hence the kissing.

0:26:44 > 0:26:47Hence the kissing, you're absolutely right.

0:26:47 > 0:26:49What about the Yuletide log?

0:26:49 > 0:26:51That's another thing that goes back to pagan times.

0:26:51 > 0:26:55That was a huge, great part of a tree trunk

0:26:55 > 0:26:58that was dragged into a lovely big hall or a castle like this.

0:26:58 > 0:26:59And you set fire to it,

0:26:59 > 0:27:02and you kept its smouldering right the way through

0:27:02 > 0:27:05- for the next two weeks.- Fascinating.

0:27:05 > 0:27:08Now, coming to more modern times, what about today's decorations?

0:27:08 > 0:27:11A lot of the things we do today started in Victorian times.

0:27:11 > 0:27:14The very first Christmas card came out in the 1840s.

0:27:14 > 0:27:16But, of course, the really big thing

0:27:16 > 0:27:19the Victorians brought in to this country was the Christmas tree.

0:27:19 > 0:27:23But it was Prince Albert who really popularised the Christmas tree

0:27:23 > 0:27:26from the 1840s onwards, after he had married Queen Victoria.

0:27:26 > 0:27:29Because he was also trying to remould the royal family

0:27:29 > 0:27:32and give it a lot more of a softer profile.

0:27:32 > 0:27:34So he made a big thing about

0:27:34 > 0:27:38presenting Christmas trees to schools, to children's homes,

0:27:38 > 0:27:39to all the sorts of charities

0:27:39 > 0:27:42that the royal family was getting involved with.

0:27:42 > 0:27:44So it had that cachet of royalness about it,

0:27:44 > 0:27:47and before you know where you are, everyone wants a Christmas tree.

0:27:47 > 0:27:49And with the Christmas tree, of course, came decorations.

0:27:49 > 0:27:52And so, for instance, the very first Christmas bauble

0:27:52 > 0:27:57- started over 200 or 300 years ago, hand-blown glass.- Oh!

0:27:57 > 0:27:59- Very fine glass.- Yes.

0:27:59 > 0:28:02Of course, very difficult to make, cost an absolute fortune.

0:28:02 > 0:28:05And it wasn't until plastic came in in the 1950s

0:28:05 > 0:28:08that really, again, most people could start to have

0:28:08 > 0:28:10large numbers of baubles around the house.

0:28:10 > 0:28:12- Ah, what about the lights? - The lights.

0:28:12 > 0:28:13Well, would you believe it?

0:28:13 > 0:28:18Back then people lit candles and put them on the Christmas tree.

0:28:18 > 0:28:19- Now, you know how...? - Health and safety!

0:28:19 > 0:28:21You know how dry a Christmas tree is.

0:28:21 > 0:28:23There were some terrible accidents.

0:28:23 > 0:28:25And so in 1882, over in America,

0:28:25 > 0:28:30Thomas Edison came up with the idea of electric lights on trees.

0:28:30 > 0:28:32He did them as a publicity stunt

0:28:32 > 0:28:36- and nobody took any notice at all cos they cost so much money!- Yeah.

0:28:36 > 0:28:38Once they'd mastered how to make them

0:28:38 > 0:28:41as tiny as the ones we use today, they started to take off,

0:28:41 > 0:28:44and before you know where you are again, of course,

0:28:44 > 0:28:46you've got lights all over the Christmas tree.

0:28:46 > 0:28:47Then someone invented outside lights

0:28:47 > 0:28:49so you have lights all over your house.

0:28:49 > 0:28:51We've got a nice reindeer on our front lawn.

0:28:51 > 0:28:54My girls absolutely love it.

0:28:54 > 0:28:56Thank you, Rupert. I'm going to make it my job

0:28:56 > 0:28:58to put more effort into decorating my home this Christmas.

0:28:58 > 0:29:00- LAUGHING:- Quite right.

0:29:00 > 0:29:02Meanwhile, we're off to the auction room.

0:29:02 > 0:29:04Will our teams find some crackers of their own?

0:29:04 > 0:29:08MUSIC: Last Christmas by Wham!

0:29:11 > 0:29:14My trusty reindeer have brought me down the road to Canterbury,

0:29:14 > 0:29:16to the Canterbury Auction Galleries,

0:29:16 > 0:29:18and I'm here with the auctioneer, Cliona.

0:29:18 > 0:29:20- Hello.- Hello. You're very welcome.

0:29:20 > 0:29:21Well, it's great to see you.

0:29:21 > 0:29:24And what do you think of the Reds' items?

0:29:24 > 0:29:26We start with this figure here.

0:29:26 > 0:29:28- Very Art Deco in style.- Yup.

0:29:28 > 0:29:32The chrome-plated, lovely naked woman always goes down quite well,

0:29:32 > 0:29:34- doesn't it?- Yes. I'm not surprised.

0:29:34 > 0:29:37In this style of the artists of the period,

0:29:37 > 0:29:38- but not a period piece.- Yeah.

0:29:38 > 0:29:41But a nice decorative thing nonetheless.

0:29:41 > 0:29:44And for that reason, we've put £15 to £20 on it.

0:29:44 > 0:29:45£15 to £20?

0:29:45 > 0:29:48Well, they paid £35.

0:29:48 > 0:29:51So you might have to just press the accelerator pedal a little bit.

0:29:51 > 0:29:52We'll do our best.

0:29:52 > 0:29:55The second item, of course, is extremely Christmassy,

0:29:55 > 0:29:58- and is our sledge. - Fantastic, isn't it?

0:29:58 > 0:30:00We just have to hope it will be a white Christmas...

0:30:00 > 0:30:02- I'm dreaming of one. - Indeed, aren't we all?

0:30:02 > 0:30:06..to tempt kids out there and tempt the parents to buy it for them.

0:30:06 > 0:30:08I mean, if not, it's a nice decorative thing,

0:30:08 > 0:30:11- the sort of thing you sometimes see in pub interiors or the like.- Yeah.

0:30:11 > 0:30:15- Estimate?- Estimate we put on that was £5 to £10.

0:30:15 > 0:30:19Right, they paid ten, so one quick bid and you're away.

0:30:19 > 0:30:21Now, what about the ring, the third lot?

0:30:21 > 0:30:22A very nice decorative ring.

0:30:22 > 0:30:27- Obviously, there is a value in the gold and the stones there.- Quite.

0:30:27 > 0:30:2818-carat gold.

0:30:28 > 0:30:32- The stones are pretty but they're not very big.- No.

0:30:32 > 0:30:36However, we still placed an estimate of £100 to £150 on it.

0:30:36 > 0:30:38Yep. Well, that's pretty promising, really.

0:30:38 > 0:30:40- They paid 175.- OK.

0:30:40 > 0:30:42So they're just over the top of your estimate.

0:30:42 > 0:30:44If the ring doesn't tick all the boxes,

0:30:44 > 0:30:46they might need their bonus buy.

0:30:46 > 0:30:47Let's have a look it.

0:30:49 > 0:30:52- Nikki and Sue, you spent most of your money, didn't you?- Yeah.

0:30:52 > 0:30:58£220, leaving this man - at Christmas time - with £80.

0:30:58 > 0:30:59What have you got them?

0:30:59 > 0:31:01I thought, "Christmas time, what do people like?"

0:31:01 > 0:31:03- Cocktails!- Hey!

0:31:03 > 0:31:06- Ooh, I love cocktails. - A couple of siphons and...

0:31:06 > 0:31:08- A little shaker.- ..a little shaker.

0:31:08 > 0:31:09- I like that.- They're nice.

0:31:09 > 0:31:11- That's really nice. Three for the price of one.- Yeah.

0:31:11 > 0:31:13Have a look at the cocktail shaker.

0:31:13 > 0:31:16I mean, most cocktail shakers are plated,

0:31:16 > 0:31:18but this is a little bit different.

0:31:18 > 0:31:22You can actually see what's going in there, it's marked up.

0:31:22 > 0:31:25It's just a little bit different, as far as cocktail shakers go.

0:31:25 > 0:31:27- Do you like cocktails, girls? - Yes.- Love cocktails.

0:31:27 > 0:31:29Oh, Raj, you've hit the spot.

0:31:29 > 0:31:31- Well...- What sort of era, when is that?

0:31:31 > 0:31:33I should think it's 1950s.

0:31:33 > 0:31:35- It doesn't matter, really. - No, it doesn't.- Useful object.

0:31:35 > 0:31:37- Absolutely.- I'd buy it.

0:31:37 > 0:31:39So how much did you pay for it?

0:31:39 > 0:31:41Well, I had £80.

0:31:41 > 0:31:44Would you be upset if I spent all of the £80?

0:31:44 > 0:31:45No, I don't think so.

0:31:45 > 0:31:47Oh, that's good. Cos I spent 22.

0:31:47 > 0:31:49- Oh, did you? Brilliant.- Wow.

0:31:49 > 0:31:51And what do you think it will make at auction?

0:31:51 > 0:31:52They should make £30. £30 to £40.

0:31:52 > 0:31:54- OK.- Brilliant.- They're lovely.

0:31:54 > 0:31:56Well, girls, of course, you don't have to decide now.

0:31:56 > 0:31:58Leave it till the auction.

0:31:58 > 0:32:00You're quite pleased with that, aren't you?

0:32:00 > 0:32:01- Yeah.- Cheers to Raj.

0:32:01 > 0:32:04Well, the girls like the siphons and the cocktail shaker.

0:32:04 > 0:32:06But will the auctioneer?

0:32:07 > 0:32:11The cocktail shaker is probably the more commercial of them.

0:32:11 > 0:32:14And the problem is, it's just not a very early one.

0:32:14 > 0:32:17Some of them can be extremely ornate and decorative,

0:32:17 > 0:32:19and this may not be quite there.

0:32:19 > 0:32:22However, it still serves a purpose and Christmas is coming,

0:32:22 > 0:32:24- so fingers crossed.- We'd both like a cocktail, wouldn't we?

0:32:24 > 0:32:26- Indeed, yes, please. - What about an estimate?

0:32:26 > 0:32:29We placed £5 to £10 on those.

0:32:29 > 0:32:31I'm not surprised.

0:32:31 > 0:32:34- Raj went in at £22 here.- OK.

0:32:34 > 0:32:36But not too bad.

0:32:36 > 0:32:37Well, that's for the Reds.

0:32:37 > 0:32:39Now, Sam and Dan for the Blues.

0:32:39 > 0:32:42Their first item is the fire extinguisher here.

0:32:42 > 0:32:45It's made by a manufacturer, Pyrene,

0:32:45 > 0:32:49who made many fire extinguishers for commercial vehicles

0:32:49 > 0:32:51- and boats and the like.- Yeah.

0:32:51 > 0:32:55So it is the sort of thing that might appeal to a classic car owner

0:32:55 > 0:32:56- or something like that.- Ah!

0:32:56 > 0:32:59It's an interesting thing, it's in reasonable condition,

0:32:59 > 0:33:02- and it also has its metal holder as well.- Yeah.

0:33:02 > 0:33:06For that reason, we've put a huge estimate of £5 to £10 on it.

0:33:06 > 0:33:09- Have you really? You've gone right over the top there, then?- Yes!

0:33:09 > 0:33:13- But it's not too terminal, really, cos they only paid £15.- Brilliant.

0:33:13 > 0:33:15Now, the next item intrigues me.

0:33:15 > 0:33:17The beaker. Is it silver?

0:33:17 > 0:33:22We have tested it and it proves to be a bit of silver.

0:33:22 > 0:33:24- What we would call low-grade silver. - Yes, yes.

0:33:24 > 0:33:27So it's below our standard 925

0:33:27 > 0:33:31- that would be typical for English silver here.- Quite.

0:33:31 > 0:33:34And as a result, we have to call it silvery metal or white metal.

0:33:34 > 0:33:36What sort of estimate have you put on it?

0:33:36 > 0:33:38- We put £25 to £30 on it.- Yeah.

0:33:38 > 0:33:42It certainly has that Indian feel to it.

0:33:42 > 0:33:44And, you know, we may have the bidders coming in

0:33:44 > 0:33:48from the Middle East or Near East on this, so I think we should do OK.

0:33:48 > 0:33:50Fingers crossed. Well, he did pay £60.

0:33:50 > 0:33:55OK. Yes, he splashed out the cash on this lot, on their behalf.

0:33:55 > 0:33:59Now, Sam, again, liked the first aid box.

0:33:59 > 0:34:01- Yes. Was he feeling poorly? - THEY LAUGH

0:34:01 > 0:34:04Well, he might be after the sale of the beaker.

0:34:04 > 0:34:05There is the railway connection,

0:34:05 > 0:34:07which might bring it up a little bit.

0:34:07 > 0:34:09An intriguing thing to have.

0:34:09 > 0:34:12Included in the box are a lot of the contents,

0:34:12 > 0:34:15complete with a record book of the treatments that were distributed.

0:34:15 > 0:34:16What about an estimate?

0:34:16 > 0:34:19- We put £10 to £15 on that. - Have you?- Yes.

0:34:19 > 0:34:21- They paid £35 for this.- OK.

0:34:21 > 0:34:23Now, they might need some first aid.

0:34:23 > 0:34:25They might also need their bonus buy, let's have a look at it.

0:34:27 > 0:34:30Sam and Dan, you left this man with £190.

0:34:30 > 0:34:32- Yeah, a lot of money. - What did you get?

0:34:32 > 0:34:35So, tempted as I was to go skiing at this time of the year,

0:34:35 > 0:34:38instead I thought we'd go skating.

0:34:38 > 0:34:40Now, I've brought you...

0:34:40 > 0:34:42Ooh, that's a reaction, wasn't it?

0:34:42 > 0:34:45- It's lovely, isn't it(?) - I bought you a watercolour.

0:34:45 > 0:34:47I bought you an Edwardian watercolour.

0:34:47 > 0:34:51Continental scene of skaters on a lake in Austria.

0:34:51 > 0:34:54So how much did you pay for that watercolour?

0:34:54 > 0:34:57Well, you left me £190.

0:34:57 > 0:34:59And with it, I spent...

0:34:59 > 0:35:00£5 of it.

0:35:00 > 0:35:03- Oh, that's brilliant.- What do you think we could get at auction?

0:35:03 > 0:35:06I think today we're going to do double,

0:35:06 > 0:35:09treble or even quadruple our money.

0:35:09 > 0:35:11- I like the sound of that. - Brave talking.

0:35:11 > 0:35:13With this huge amount of money he's laid out,

0:35:13 > 0:35:15you don't have to make your decision now.

0:35:15 > 0:35:18Leave it until the auction and then you can decide

0:35:18 > 0:35:21whether it's £5 well spent or very badly spent.

0:35:21 > 0:35:24Either way, what does the auctioneer think?

0:35:25 > 0:35:30Well, Cliona, they sent Richard with £190 to spend,

0:35:30 > 0:35:32and he bought this. What do you think?

0:35:32 > 0:35:34Right. Did he spend all £190 on it?

0:35:34 > 0:35:37LAUGHING: I'm not going to tell you until you give me an estimate!

0:35:37 > 0:35:41Right. Well, a nice continental watercolour, a great scene,

0:35:41 > 0:35:44the festive scene and the time of the year that we're selling.

0:35:44 > 0:35:46But it's an unknown artist.

0:35:46 > 0:35:48Condition is a little bit against it...

0:35:48 > 0:35:49It's a bit faded, isn't it?

0:35:49 > 0:35:52A little bit faded, and also you've got these brown spots on the paper,

0:35:52 > 0:35:54- which we refer to as foxing.- Yeah.

0:35:54 > 0:35:56For that reason, I like it as a decorative picture,

0:35:56 > 0:35:59but we've only put £10 to £15 on it.

0:35:59 > 0:36:00Well, well, well.

0:36:00 > 0:36:04- I can reveal that he didn't pay £190.- OK.
